On October 12, 2022, a pinch of rain through the night, lots of wind, but it could be snowing, so I’m just counting my blessings. We could sure use more moisture in the form of rain, not snow. As far as I’m concerned, it can wait to snow next June when its sixty-five degrees. The food comments this month come from my own family tree. To start the story off, let me tell you about my aunt “Cookie” Lilly Sorensen Anderson, dad’s sister. 50 plus years ago, she could make the best hamburger ever. To describe my Aunt Cookie’s hamburgers; she grabbed like a third pound of hamburger, pressed it out by hand, put that burger on one of those pre heated ol’ cast iron griddles that every café had, salt and peppered it and grilled it to a perfection. Then on top, a one eight-inch slice of onion, a hand full of pickles, slap on ketchup on that toasted buttered bun. The first bite, the grease would be dripping, and the flavor of that combination was unbelievable. I can still taste it!! So, beings that “Cookie” isn’t with us anymore I must check out the family tree to see if her daughters or granddaughters can duplicate her great hamburgers.

First stop “Shorts Place” in Menlo Iowa. Amanda (Mandy) Powell is a granddaughter of “Cookie.” She flat told me that she couldn’t duplicate grandma’s cooking, but she said her sister Missy in Corning, could. Mandy did a very nice job of making a bar sandwich taste special, when you have onion, pickles, and ketchup, you can make a bar sandwich a bunch better. I had a nice visit with Mandy and then declared I would be heading to Corning next chance I got.

So, I got the crazy idea today to go check in with Mandy’s sister Missy in Corning, Iowa at Three C’s Diner. So, the same question came up, “Missy, can you duplicate your grandmother’s hamburger?” Negative answer. I guess basically, I ate the last great one many years

ago, but Missy said I have the best breaded tenderloin in southwest Iowa. Well, bring it on.

She wasn’t kidding! If you are like me, usually you order a breaded loin and most of them come with more breading than loin. Not the case at Three C diner, this loin is for big boys, it has the meat. Then you slap some onion and pickle with a little ketchup, and you have a great one. About the pickle thing, I’m not sure where she gets those pickles, they aren’t those paper-thin things, these pickles are deadly, big and thick with flavor. Then a side of potato salad. If you are a big ol’ boy, you might get around it all. I did get around it but had to cheat a little. For dessert, our little waitress Kaile suggested that we try the sweet potato mini fluffs served with a side of marshmallow dipping sauce; just a pinch of heaven here! There is always room for that dessert stuff, the only problem is that if you share an order, don’t dilly around or your partner will have them gone.

A big thank you to the once Erickson girls for their honesty in not being able to duplicate grandma’s hamburgers. A big thank you for the extended family bonding time, I enjoyed it.

Please Lord, help us get our country back, please pray for common sense for our Country’s leaders. Keep our first responders, our military along with their families in your thoughts and prayers.

Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year from all of us at LPI.

God Bless

The Road Ahead for Markets

The Federal Reserve has failed miserably for the year to date to slow inflation down at all, even as rates have been raised time and again. Look, when you print money like free toilet paper during and post-Covid to hand out for nothing then of course inflation is going to rip everyone a new shirt-tail. You should expect nothing short of continued stagflation while recession develops and transitions into a depression by 2024 to purge the ‘system’ of trillions of dollars of global debt that cannot be paid back.

By the time this new issue of November-December Livestock Plus magazine hits your mailbox the Federal Reserve will have made another monetary policy move. If Gold and Silver and US Treasuries go through the roof the week of November 4th ending on a Friday then watch out above and look for Yellow Gold and Black Gold ‘Crude Oil’ to soar into the end of the year.

This month we’ll avoid paragraphs of commentary and trust the old adage ‘a picture is worth a 1000 words’. Please see each chart below and the notes embedded therein to get the picture and hedge strategy bias implied. If you would like in-depth day to day strategy ideas for your ranch or farm then talk with us at the number down below.

Take a few minutes right now and simply contact Michelle White at 312.756.0931

here at our Fox Group office at the Chicago Board of Trade Monday through Friday 9am to 430pm CST and she will help you receive on a complimentary basis for two full months by email the sundry market advisories sent by us. You can also email Michelle White at mwhite@tradewithfox.com and give her your email address to accomplish same. And remember, hedging livestock and grain needs and fuel needs with Exchange positions still has risk of loss and is not suitable for all livestock producers and investors who desire to hedge their operational needs. Also know that educational teleconferences with your team and bankers can be done late afternoon or in person here in Chicago on Saturday’s. n

No Talking Cows…Keep On Task With Farmland Markets!

As

am mixing feed for the

in

said it), I hear the

is in full swing here in Iowa and

are already hearing of stronger yields than expected. That is always a good thing to hear from our farming families.

The interest in farmland continues and the question now is will we see more farms hit the market than last November? November historically has always been one of the most popular months for land sales. But why?

are several reasons. Some believe it is because after harvest there is more jingle in the pockets with full bins and so that is a good time to sell…happy people spend money. “Full bins sell farms!” Others think it is because of the timeline from when lease terminations are served in September and then the timeline to market the farm puts you at a November auction sale date. Then lastly you can look at it from a financial standpoint, real estate closing standpoint, and tax implications purposes with a November auction it gives just enough time to get the closing completed by the end of December to meet sellers and buyers’ goals before the end of the year.

Two frequently asked questions are, “When is the right time to sell?” or “When is the right time to buy?” Unfortunately, we do not have a crystal ball and you being in the farming/livestock/ag industry know that our way of life is always changing with the markets, weather, and health of ourselves and our livestock. So, the only answer I can give is this, “When it is right for you!” Only you know when you are ready to let go of the farm or when you can make it work to buy a farm that comes to market in your area. The thing to keep in mind is that we do know what the markets and interest rates are doing now. We don’t know what this next year will bring. So if you are ready to sell, sell now. Buyers be ready for the November rush! Start making plans now. I wish you all a safe and bountiful harvest season! Sincerely, Ann.

8 Tips to Plan for Winter Grazing

High feed costs coupled with high fuel costs make extended grazing options important to consider. Many cattlemen in northern Iowa tell me winter grazing isn’t an option, but with a little planning now extending grazing a month or more can be done anywhere. Here are a few options to consider.

1. STOCKPILE PASTURES

This is one option, provided you have adequate pasture acres to set aside from August first and graze after a killing freeze. Fescue is the best stockpile option for cool seasons since it tends to stand upright after a freeze. Other cool season grasses should be grazed soon after a freeze since they don’t maintain their upright stance well. Most producers don’t have extra pasture, but hay fields can be an option too. With the high price of fuel, consider letting the last cutting of hay grow and graze it in the fall. Alfalfa hay should be grazed with 7-10 days after a killing frost to ensure that the risk of bloat potential subsides but leaf loss doesn’t impact quality.

2. LET ANNUALS GROW

Summer annuals like sudangrass, sorghumXsudangrass, or millets stockpile well and maintain their upright stance following a killing freeze. Again, allow it to grow from about August 1 until freeze for adequate forage. Sudangrass and sorghumXsudan do have the potential for prussic acid poisoning so stay off it from the first frost until about a week after a full killing freeze (below 28° F. for 3 or more hours). For best use of the forage, strip graze with electric fence and move the fence every couple of days. Iowa research shows we can grow 3-5 tons of dry matter per acre from summer annuals which should provide about 80-130 cow grazing days per acre at 50% use rate.

3. CONSIDER SWATH GRAZING

This is a common method used in Canada, and an ISU study on swath grazing sorghumXsudangrass shows it works in Iowa as well. The second cutting of sorghumXsudangrass was stockpiled, mowed and windrowed about a week prior to late December grazing, and provided about 115 cow grazing days per acre. Cows stayed on the swaths through mid-February with no negative consequences from snow or ice. Strip grazing the swaths resulted in 70% use of the forage available so very little residue was left in the field for the next crop year and no additional tillage was needed to remove the residue.

4. SEED WINTER ANNUALS

Seed winter annuals or cover crops for winter and early spring grazing. For maximum forage growth, drill winter annuals following corn silage or early soybean harvest. Oats, triticale and brassicas result in the most fall grazing growth while winter cereal rye and triticale provide the most growth and earliest available spring grazing.

5. GRAZE STANDING CORN

Grazing standing corn is an option, although more difficult to justify with high grain prices. Some grain needs to be harvested to set up the strip fencing and reduce the total grain left in the field to get a better ratio of grain to forage. This must be strip grazed to reduce acidosis risk.

6. GRAZE BALES

Bale grazing is a method of winter grazing where bales are distributed throughout a field and temporary fencing is used to allocate adequate forage for a day or two. Cows spread manure across the field instead of in one location, and the need to start a tractor daily is reduced.

7. GRAZE STALKS

Cornstalk grazing has been a major feed source across Iowa for early winter feed, but we only use less than a quarter of the stalks available in the state. The nutrition in stalks is highest in the ears, leaves and husks, and once they are consumed or deteriorated by weather, the feed value drops rapidly. In continuous grazed corn fields cows will select the ears, leaves and husks quickly, so any type of strip or rotational grazing increases the grazing days from corn fields. For larger herds, consider putting all cattle in one group, start grazing in the first fields harvested or the farthest from home, and move cows to a new field when the leaves and husks are consumed. For smaller herds, consider strip grazing with electric fences and sizing your strips, so cows move every week or two to a new area.

8. CONSIDER CORNSTALK SWATH GRAZING

Cornstalk swath grazing isn’t for the faint of heart, but for those willing to try something ‘outside the box’ this might be an option for a few acres close to the winter feeding area. Shut off the chaff spreader on your combine to create a swath of leaves and husks following grain harvest, then strip graze those in January where you can supplement with additional feed if needed. Just be sure your grazing density on the strips is intense enough to utilize all the forage in the windrow and not leave too much behind for spring planting season.

These are just a several options to extend the grazing season and reduce stored feed costs. Remember for every week we keep cows grazing offsets $13 per cow in feed at $100 per ton hay plus the price of diesel used to deliver that hay. For many operations, that’s about a 2% reduction in total cow costs for every week grazing is extended. If you need additional help in calculating winter grazing needs, contact your regional beef specialist.

She believes food security is national security, and her work is focused on keep ing producers on the land and ensuring every citizen has access to safe, affordable and nutritious food in this country. Radke is the author of seven agriculturally-accurate children’s books, and her goal is to help promote agricultural literacy in schools. IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

ICA member testifies before House Agriculture Committee regarding value of conservation programs

On Sept. 20, Iowa cattle producer and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) member Shayne Wiese testified before the House Agriculture Committee regarding implementation of the conserva tion title of the 2018 Farm Bill.

“USDA’s voluntary conservation pro grams have been a great asset to cattle producers, and it is important that these programs are implemented in a practical, producer friendly, and voluntary manner for years to come to ensure that cattle pro ducers will continue to have the ability to do what we do best: produce the world’s safest, most nutritious, abundant, and affordable protein while operating in the most environmentally friendly way possi ble,” Wiese testified.

Wiese shared his experiences utiliz ing the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) and the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). Additionally, Wiese highlighted his concerns with the staffing shortage at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that has led to agency delays, additional paperwork burdens, and less time for local officials to meet with the agricultural producers they serve.

“NCBA communicates with members of Congress and their staff every day but hearing directly from a cattle producer out side of Washington is extremely beneficial,” said NCBA Vice President of Government Affairs Ethan Lane. “We hope Congress carefully considers Shayne’s testimony as they evaluate the last Farm Bill and begin crafting the next one.”

Shayne Wiese is a fifth-generation cat tle producer, currently operating Wiese & Sons: Good Doin’ Bulls along with his older

brother in West Central Iowa. Wiese & Sons are advocates for conservation and utilize cover crops, CRP, water filtration buffers, and erosion reduction practices as part of their comprehensive commitment to environmental stewardship. In addi tion to being a member of NCBA, Wiese is involved with the American Hereford Association, Iowa Beef Industry Council, Iowa Beef Breed’s Council, and Iowa Cattlemen’s Association.

“Producer feedback is vital to improv ing conservation programs outlined in the Farm Bill, and we appreciate Shayne for sharing his personal experiences,”

said Bob Noble, president of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association. “Livestock pro ducers take pride in being stewards of the land and natural resources and would benefit from additional support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. We seek to maximize the impact of programs like the Conservation Reserve Program and Environmental Quality Incentives Program to further achieve our conservation goals and solidify cattle as climate-smart solu tions.”

Cattle Mineral Supplements for Winter

Minerals and vitamins are essential for proper cattle nutrition and in winter, it’s especially important to provide a supplement for your animals. Generally, harvested forages are lower in mineral concentration than when grazed. Forages that were droughtstressed lose a lot of nutrient value once they dry up or freeze.

Grant Crawford is a beef extension educator for the University of Minnesota. He says one of the main minerals cattle need supplementation for during winter is phosphorous.

“Phosphorous is high in grains like corn, also high in distiller’s grains. But in forages, is not so high so that’s definitely one we want to keep an eye on,” says Crawford. “Calcium in most cases is pretty good. In some cases there may be some low calcium forages. Beyond that, pretty much every mineral supplement in the winter time should contain salt or sodium chloride.”

Cows expecting a calf should also be given extra magnesium. Lactating cows grazing on lush, spring pastures are susceptible to grass tetany, which is inadequate uptake of magnesium.

“If you’re providing supplemental feed, or if you’re mixing the feed together in some sort of total mixed ration, I prefer to have it in the feed. Then you know that if they’re eating the feed, they’re getting the mineral,” says Crawford. “If you have a free choice out there or a block, you really don’t know if they’re getting any of it, if they’re getting too much of it, but if you’re putting it in the feed and you’re observing that they’re eating the feed, then you know that they’re getting at least some of the mineral.”

Mixing feed may not be an option for everyone. In that case, Crawford says a free-choice mineral block or tub is preferred over setting out a loose supplement, which can blow away in the wind or be tipped over. n

Happy Holidays, Thank you to all of our friends and customers for an awesome year! We have truly enjoyed the opportunity to work with and get to know you!

From my family to yours; wishing you and your family a blessed holiday season and a safe and happy New Year!

God Bless, Austin Sorensen

Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I hope 2022 has brought you all as much happiness as it has me. I have so much to be thankful for this year, but more than anything, I am thankful for Brooke and her little boy Brex.

It’s been a great year working with you all around the sale ring and I look forward to the year ahead. We would like to wish everyone a happy holiday seasaon.

Merry Christmas and God Bless, Eric, Brooke & Brexton

We were blessed this year with our second baby boy, Clete James. Tamar and I are busy adjusting to life as a family of four and Cort is learning to be a great big brother. The biggest blessing I received through the entire process was seeing the excitement and pure joy on Cort’s face when we brought Clete home for the first time. I can’t wait for a front row seat to see these two boys grow up together! I have to give Tamar a giant shoutout – she is truly a selfless person that works so hard to keep us 3 boys going.

The holiday season this year may be a bit crazy but I am truly looking forward to it. Getting to experience it with our boys adds another level of excitement and energy to it all. Let us not forget to focus on the blessings the Lord has given us. Often times I get so caught up in the business of life and have to remember to slow down for a minute and just thank God for all He has done. Wishing you all nothing but the best!

God Bless, Cody, Tamar, Cort and Clete

You are truly an awesome God to bless us with so much and in so many ways. There are so many things we have to be thankful for at this time of the year and we ask for your Holy Spirit to give us grateful hearts and eyes to see the gifts all around us.

We thank you for the harvest and for the families that work so hard to complete this important task. We thank you for our country and the leaders on every level of government. We thank you for our churches, our schools, our businesses and our communities so that our families might grow in faith and knowledge as well as in the ability to work and to serve others.

Finally, no matter what we may each be facing in our personal lives, remind us that You walk with us and that You overcome the world. We always have hope. We can always find grace. And we are always loved through Your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
