NEW BEGINNINGS HOLY

snow flakes it's the new year. Where did it go? I remember the frantic worry concerning the new year of 2000. Looming ahead was Y2K and the concern about computers crashing and the world coming to an end. It wasn’t so long ago and we are still here... still fretting...about things that don't really matter. Time can be our friend or our enemy depending on your perspective. Are you a worrier filled with regret or are you a person who looks forward with anticipation for the wonder ahead ? Are you obsessed with lost youth planning your next face lift or are you embracing the glory of age and wisdom - hugging and loving grand-kids and remodeling the camper trailer? Are you in a panic about the job you thought you snagged or see another door opening? Living a wiser, better life is all about balancing the difficulties of life with the enthusiasm of a fearless eagle soaring the currents enjoying the view from above the fog and clouds of that same life. While the world indeed is filled with

concerning chaos, you have the personal power to do with it what you may... Worry or love what is. Are you that person who is depressed with the covers over your head, addicted to sickness, ready for the end or are you the person who fights for answers and recovery from what ails you? You can choose new beginnings everyday. You can choose to flourish... Feeling the cold wind anxious for the flowering of Spring only a few months ahead. Flowers bloom even in the harshest of conditions - Evergreens provide life giving shelter throughout the darkest winter nights - so can you Plant those seeds today. Love yourself enough to create a new beginning that reaps bounty and a harvest to remember in your life. Wake up each morning with a purpose in mind - to love yourself. So how do you love yourself ? Just start saying it. Don’t fear the face in the mirror looking back at you. Say it like your life depends on it... It does. I love me. I love you. Love is all we need... The Beatles had that one right.

THE MEANING OF LIFE How to Wake Up & Show Up

I’D

like to talk about the “meaning of life” and tell you what that is from my perspective. First of all, I think we have to wake up. We have to remember; we have to know who and what we really are and wake up to our true identities, because before that we’re just wandering around in the dark and bumping into the furniture. I think all the great mystical and spiritual traditions from times past will confirm that the essential thing that we are here to do is recognize God, Buddha nature, true Self, essence. This has been stated a lot of ways in different languages, different cultures, and different levels of development at different times. So, how do we wake up? There are some cases when it seems to happen by dumb luck—you get struck by lightning and then bing! You get it. But in most cases, it seems to be more of a temporary

state (of consciousness) experience, like when somebody turns on the lights and then turns them back off again. And one of the characteristics of a state is that they come and they go. Like you’re really happy now, but you can be pretty sure that in a few hours, you’re not going to be feeling the same. You may feel just average, or you may feel really sad. So states come and go, like things that arise in the sky. At night, you’ll see stars, satellites, airplanes. In the daytime, you’ll see clouds, bugs, Frisbees, birds, and all kinds of things. Those are like our states of consciousness. But in the ever-present reality, we are the sky, the spaciousness, the pure awareness that everything arises in. So as we begin to meditate, we begin to be able to identify more and more with the states and the content, and at the same time, with the spacious awareness that

all arises in. We begin to step outside of our stories, our conditionings, and say, okay, I have a body, but I’m not my body right now. I’m observing this from the outside. I have thoughts, but I’m observing my thoughts from the outside. I have feelings, I have emotions, I have stories, I have a cultural identity, I have a spiritual identity, but I’m observing all of this from the outside. What does that tell you? Well, that’s the clue that maybe you’re bigger than everything you thought you were. As we begin to explore pure awareness, pure consciousness, we begin to find that it connects us to everything, and that everything emerges from pure, spacious, conscious awareness from moment to moment. I remember one of my early breakthroughs in meditation years ago, when I thought, I’m going to figure out where my thoughts come from. Why don’t I

just look at them and trace them back? A really powerful meditation will do that. What I found out was that my thoughts just kind of poof! from nothingness, or from emptiness. There they are: bing! bing! bing! Wow! Thoughts come from emptiness. You go down to the very quantum, essential, most basic level of physical reality, where physical reality and non-physical reality seem to dance, and you’ll see the same thing happening; things morph in and out of existence from moment to moment. They call this the “quantum void.” So, first we wake up to this. We go through our stuff, our agendas, our monkey minds, our thoughts, our desires, our stories, our self-hatred, our lusts and perversions, our hatreds, our addictions, our depressions, our despair, our essential isolation, our existential crisis, and keep going and going and going, blessing all of these things, because that’s how we get to our essential selves and remember: Oh, yeah! Now I remember. Now I get it. When the lights go on like that, it’s not just an intellectual idea. An awakening experience is a complete, all-body, all-spiritual, completely Integral, holistic awakening, when you remember, Oh, yes! That is who I am. Wow. The lights go on. You wake up. In the Hindu tradition, the ultimate realization is, “There is only God, and thou art that.” There is only one field, and thou art that. Physicists are constantly trying to come up with a unified field theory—one equation that explains all the different physical forces in the universe—as if that would explain the universe. They’re leaving out consciousness! Hello?! The very thing that makes it possible for them to even think about these sorts of things. There has always been the human desire to understand who and what we are, and scientists take up that quest in quantum physics. But it’s hard to get a complete theory for everything if you leave out a huge chunk—awareness itself—which probably is foundational to the universe. There is the koan, What was your original face before you were born? Or, in modern terms, What was your original face before the Big Bang? Well, you were the same thing that you always are at the deepest level—pure consciousness, awareness, emptiness—the great mystery that all the mystics have written about and that we are all pursuing. So, what is the meaning of life? Well, first of all, it’s to wake up, because if you don’t remember who and what you are, how can you function with skillfulness, wisdom, and compassion? You think you’re just an isolated little entity that boop! came into existence, then you have a few years, and then boop!, you go out of existence, then that’s it. What do you do with that? When you finally wake up to your essential being that was never born, time disappears from the picture, and you are connected to everything—you are everything. And what do we do with the individual self—the little John Dupuy self, in my case? I am this essential, ever-present awareness that is the inner intelligence, the vibrant life, the threads that hold everything together from moment to moment, a world without end—but I’m also John Dupuy sitting here in 2014, just a moment in the historical, linear unfolding of our human culture. I have a body, a history, a genetic code, a story; I have relationships, ancestors, and education. We have to bring these two things together in a relationship. In some traditions, it’s said that the little self is just an illusion that doesn’t exist—so let’s forget about it. In early Buddhism, the idea was to identify only with the essential self,

the essential mystery, step off the wheel and blow off the incarnational, individual John Dupuy ego self as a waste of time and the cause of suffering. Well, that doesn’t work very well, and around 200 A.D., the great Buddhist sage, scholar, and mystic Nagarjuna expanded on the formulation that emptiness is form and form is emptiness, saying that both are the same, that form is none other than this pure awareness, mystery, spirit, God, energy—however you want to say that—in actual physical form. So, to disrespect the form is not to understand the form, because they are essentially the same thing. In other words, we find out that we are that, and that our individual self is also that. It’s all God. It’s all that. So the first step is to wake up, and then we have to show up. Showing up involves stabilizing being awake, because if all you do is wake up… Well, imagine that you’re sleeping on and on, and then you wake up for a couple of minutes and then you go back to sleep, back to your dream world. Well, that’s not very useful. So, not only do we have to wake up, but we have to stay awake. Then we have to show up in such a way that the small, individual part that we are playing out as a singular human being has to be in integrity, or in alignment, with the bigger self. How do we do that? How do stay awake? And how do we show up and actually figure out what we are supposed to be doing in this little bit of allotted time that we have in our individual human body forms? Well, what we are finding out—and this does not negate all the wisdom that came before us—is that it takes practice. It takes work. If you’re looking for a guru to hit you on the head with a feather and do all the work for you, or for Jesus to die and do the work for you, or anybody else to do it for you, you’re just going to be wasting time. We eventually get to the point where we have to take responsibility for our own awakening, and our own staying awake, and then our own showing up and doing the work that we are called to do, because the universe is directional; there are things going on that we are a part of. Just like the wave/particle paradox in quantum physics, where you look at the most basic entity one way, and it looks like a wave, like it’s connected to everything, and then you change your perspec-

tive, and it looks like an individual particle. That’s the kind of wave that we are from moment to moment—we are everything, and we are individualized. As we begin to integrate in practice, over time, this becomes more stabilized, just like if we have a strobe light: If our strobe light flashes on once every ten years, and we briefly see the landscape and then it’s dark for ten more years, that’s not very good. As we increase our practice, the light comes on more and more often, and pretty soon, like with a really fast strobe light, we can actually see the darkness and the light—or the individuality and the connectedness. So back and forth it goes until it becomes pretty much no longer this or that, but includes both. So, we have to have a practice. And what do we need to cover in that practice? First of all, we have to cover the

physical body. We have to make sure that our organs, our brains, our neurochemical balance, all the genetic stuff that each of us has been given, is being played at the most optimal, skillful way. Next, we need to work on our cognitive understanding, our intellectual understanding. There are different lines of intelligence and there are different levels of development all going on at the same time on the planet right now. So we have a whole bunch of human beings all at different stages where we value different things. Most of us think that our particular level of development is the ultimate one and that everybody else is wrong, so we have religious wars, tribal wars, political wars, cultural wars… all really problematic. How do we work through that? Well, we get to the (Integral) developmental levels where we understand that all these perspectives are always present and that they have their negative aspects and their healthy aspects. We work on our intellectual understanding so that we can function skillfully and understand what needs to be accomplished at all these different levels. The next thing we need to do is ego, emotional, shadow, and trauma work, because who we think we are and where we act from is largely controlled, in most of us, by unconscious conditioning and painful things that have happened to us in the past. We need a deep, emotional practice that will help us not only deal with the stuff that’s happened in the past, even our collective past, but the stuff that hap-

pens from moment to moment. The last part of the practice is the spiritual life, which concerns the big, existential human questions, such as, what is the nature of reality? Who am I? Is there life after death? Is the universe intelligent? Is it sentient? Is it just a random accident? How did this thing happen? And, what is my place in it? These are deep, spiritual questions that all of us have to confront eventually along the path. In the beginning, it’s harder to establish a practice. All sorts of resistance arises: No, I don’t want to do this. I can’t do this for an hour. I need to be doing something. I’m too busy. Take responsibility for your own self-care, your own inner health, and your own outer health, and you will find that you can actually work on all of your other responsibilities— what you’re called to do, your karmic debts, the stuff that you’re working on in this lifetime. If you think that you don’t have time to wake up, you don’t have time to work on yourself, you don’t have time to maintain your health at the high-

est level, you’re missing the boat. Your life is just not going to be what it could be. The real tragedy is living in a state of conditioned functioning, in which we think we’re awake and calling the shots, but we’re really not. We’re in egoic trances, and we never really figure out who we are and what we’re here to do. If I can summarize all of this, the meaning of life is to wake up and realize who we are in the largest and smallest aspects of reality—as I sit here in my chair, who am I in relationship to the trees, the animals, and the life in my little piece of the world? Who am I in relationship to the whole universe? How do I stay awake? How do I make my individual ego, body, self the most functional, capable vehicle to hold that understanding? And what is my individual mission as a person who has woken up and taken care of himself? What am I here to do? What instrument am I to play in the great symphony of the unfolding, evolving universe, and how do I play it beautifully, skillfully, and compassionately?

BECOME A POWER FOR GOOD

IN

a world that is vastly conflicted and cultural standards are compromised everywhere we look, what does “good” mean. We have been bombarded by visual images on the TV and movies that truly desensitized us to the suffering of others. we don’t think we can make a difference. It is too overwhelming. Riots and chaos headline the news. Good news seems to be in short supply. Even among those who would define themselves as good - they are busy arguing, demeaning each other, jostling for attention, fame, treasures and ill-gotten worth. Where is good? I know for me, during the time of overwhelming adversity of my own making, I was suffocating from my own suffering. I was a victim and the perpetrator of misery. I was angry all the time, cruel with my words and thought I was better than everyone. Not because I was - but because I was lonely and sad deep down inside my heart. It was not my intention to cause such

great harm, but I did... So the last thing I could see was how serving others would make me feel better. It was all I could do to take care of my family's needs and put on a strong, brave front (or so I thought). I found no relief of my internal pain until I focused my attention on someone other than myself. I learned honesty in that self-awareness that was very uncomfortable to wear. But that discomfort worked as a catalyst to turn my attention to restoring my heart to good. To becoming a power for good. Without getting into a moral imperative conversation about virtue or moral righteousness, good is just that good. It is the Golden Rule. It is “do a good deed.” “Do unto others what you would have them do unto you.” Perhaps on a greater selfless level - be a power for good regardless of others intentions or your desire for attention and reward. Call it RAK - random acts of kindness. However, more importantly, not just for strangers, be a power of good

for those who need to lean on you. This new approach to living is not motivated by guilt or shame or to add to your resume but just because you are good. Just be good. Be good for them - those you love and for those you haven't yet learned to love. Shake off your shame and stand up to bullies. Don’t be a victim any longer, create standards and values that improve your life - Have values you can believe in that will keep you afloat when the storms of poor choices crash into your safe harbors. I would add - we all have a responsibility to be a power for good outside our immediate family, as well. Begin with daily acts - the RAK's - as small as the chivalrous act of opening the door for someone is developing a personal power for good and do it with a smile. Positive energy has a greater power to negate the negative than we can possibly imagine. Being a power engine for goodness drives that shift in the universe. Who is leaning on you? Your children, perhaps a neighbor in need, your

employees or co-workers? Are you a therapist and this is your profession? Are you a public figure and your community leans on you? Do you work in law enforcement and both criminal and victims lean on you to be honorable? Honor seems to be in short supply these days. Being “good” - becoming good, is not only reflected in outward behavior but your heart. It is a feeling of peacefulness. Maybe you could start with improving the tone of your words, eliminating contempt from your language, developing empathy... Frankly, just loving and forgiving people. If you have a heart of stone - then your outward efforts to do “good” are fake and phony. You are a liar. By being a power for good, you empower others and create positive results from selfless actions. Add this to your lifestyle. Everyone is capable of being and doing good. “Get a life in which you are generous. Look around at the azaleas in the suburban neighborhood where you grew up; look at the full moon hanging silver in a black, black sky on a cold night. And realize that life is the best thing ever and that you have no business taking it for granted. Care so deeply about its goodness that you want to spread it around. Take the money...and give it to charity. Work in a soup kitchen. Be a Big Brother or Sister...You want to do well, but if you do not do good too, then doing well will never be enough.” Anna Quindlen “Every man is guilty of all the good he didn't do. “ Voltaire “The happiest people I know are people who don't even think about being happy. They just think about being good neighbors,

STEPS TO TAKE TO BE A POWER FOR GOOD: 1. Stop being a victim - it's really not about you your sorry pity party cry baby 2. Smile - at everyone. yes - everyone. 3. Be kind and say thank you to those most difficult to be nice to. 4. Love yourself - your life depends on it 5. Say your sorry 6. Be grateful 7. Forgive people 8. Say I love you and stop littering. good people. And then happiness sort of sneaks in the back window while they are busy doing good.” Rabbi Harold Kushner “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.” John Wesley Some good advice from a few well-knowns in the world. CELL PHONE FREQUENCIES PUT OUR CHILDREN AND LEARNING COMMUNITIES AT RISK!

RECENTLY,

a revealing public interest documentary aired on the pervasive effects of the Internet; specifically in regards to the negative impact of cellular phone frequencies on human health. The movie explained, in graphic detail, how human beings worldwide are in danger from the effects of cell phones and cell phone towers. The film provided shocking evidence that the health of seniors, adults, teens and children are constantly at risk due to the unseen frequencies of cellular phones. This is a particular concern to the health of children. A summary of the film’s premium points are below:

CELL PHONES Are they Carcinogenic? This is a topic that most people have come across, but tend to ignore as they believe that stringent tests have proven that they are safe. Nevertheless, there seems to be many cases of cancer clusters around property in the vicinity of the cell phone towers. These transmitters are pumping out radio frequency (RF) waves 24/7, 365 days of the year and people living close by them are having all sorts of health problems. Many scientists are predicting new cancers evolving as a result of these RF waves polluting our bodies. Cell phones and cell towers have only been around in large numbers since the late nineteen nineties, and as with most carcinogenic substances, it takes ten years or more for the long term effects to become apparent. Symptoms of over exposure to the RF waves – Symptoms includes insomnia, dizziness, nausea, increased heart rate, vertigo, headaches, visual disturbances and odd sensations in the body. They also affect the endocrine system, thyroid function, can cause internal bleeding and many other health issues. With all due respect, when we visit our doctors with these issues, they have not been trained to pick up on the effects of RF waves, so diagnosis would be a virus or stress or something else, as the symptoms are similar. If cancer or other major health problems take ten years or more to surface, this means they have not really been around long enough for long term test results to have been considered. CELL PHONE TESTING Are the tests bias? This is another area covered and according to the documentary; the tests carried out seem to be bias in the favor of the communication companies. The problem is the communication companies fund the tests, and what testing

facility is going to bite the hand that feeds it. Therefore more independent tests need to be carried out in order to get honest statistics and accurate results. Most cell phone providers do offer guidelines and say that the phone itself is safe if held a minimum of 25mm (1 Inch) away from the head. But how many people do that, we all rest it against our heads, don’t we, especially if it’s noisy where we are.

causal factor in most cancers and melatonin is our main defense mechanism. Low Melatonin levels compromise the immune system, the subtle energy body, as well as the other health risks I mentioned.

ARE CHILDREN MORE VULNERABLE THAT ADULTS? Tests are carried out using a High-Tech model head with a cell phone strapped to the side of it. They measure the heating effect on the skull and brain; this rating is called the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR). The company that does the testing states that the head is the average size taken from measurements of around 10,000 US military soldiers. None at all were carried out on a model the size of a child’s skull, and this is a major cause for concern if your child has a cell. On average, a child receives their first cell phone at the age of eight years old, and it’s obvious that the exposure would be far more invasive on a child’s thinner skull and brain than an adults. If it takes ten years to develop a tumor, young people aged 19 or 20 years old are at high risk to developing brain tumors by the time they are in college. Apparently 68% of us place our cell phones on the bedside table, where it could be polluting us while we sleep; I wonder if the ten year health risk estimate took that into consideration.

“On average, a child receives their first cell phone at the age of eight years old.”

RF WAVES + HUMAN BODY = DISEASE We live in a field of invisible electromagnetic radiation, the RF waves created by billions of cell phones, not to mention cell phone towers and various other wireless appliances. Are we really naive enough to believe putting something that emits micro waves next to our brain is not going to harm us? Of course not,, but this documentary leads us to believe that we are misguided into thinking we are safe. Scientists believe that a prolonged exposure to the RF waves has an adverse effect on the levels of melatonin produced by the pineal gland. This melatonin is a powerful hormone that acts as an in-house vacuum cleaner in the body removing the free radicals that attack our healthy cells. These free radicals are the main

THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO) In 2011, the WHO changed the danger rating of cell phones to that of possibly carcinogenic to humans. Possibly... I’m sorry, but is that acceptable? Surely there should be a large WARNING sign on the cell phone packaging in order to bring this to the public’s attention. The film mentions that around four billion people currently own a cell phone, I found an online newspaper stating it was more like six billion, but how many of them are children? The same newspaper printed that on average just under half (45%) of the children in the world have a cell phone. That’s a lot of children at risk and how many of their parents know the dangers? This documentary clearly states that the truth is being hidden in the name of profit. And if the government is not going to protect our children, then it’s up to us to do it before it’s too late.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP OURSELVES? Well, obviously there would be tears and tantrums if we took the cell phones, iPads, Laptops and so on away from our children, and many of us rely on them for our businesses. However, we do need to use them with due care and attention, so please read the leaflet thoroughly and consider the risks, especially if the cell is for a child. Avoid holding phones near your head and use the headphones with the wire plugged into the phone, placing the phone on a desk or as far from you as possible rather than using Bluetooth headsets as they are also wireless. Avoid keeping the cell in your bra ladies, it’s potentially bad for your heart and creates energetic blocks in that energy center in the body. The film states that breast cancer suffers have a tenth of the melatonin of a healthy person. And gentlemen, avoid placing your cell in our trousers pocket, as it could be damaging your lower regions, as it pollutes the base energy center; this could cause impotency or even prostate cancer. Apparently, men suffering from Prostate cancer have half the required levels of Melatonin. Children with Autism also have half the required levels and are at higher risk than non-spectrum children.

SOLUTIONS I believe the solution lies within the education system, as children need to be informed of the risks and given adequate health care activities within a controlled school environment. I intend to have an audio program that is only five minutes long introduced into the daily curriculum of every school in the USA. By introducing these programs into schools first thing in the morning on a daily basis, it would change the vibration of these dangerous RF waves, effectively cleansing them, rendering them harmless. This would not only affect the children in a positive way, but it would also help staff and cleanse the energy in the building. Crystal Ki works on a cellular molecular level by altering the frequencies of the waves that make up the human energy field and physical body by restoring the mind and body to healthy levels. I also believe we can reduce the problem of bullying that seems to be prevalent in schools by raising the frequency of the mind/body and energy field, increasing the levels of light within the children and healing victim consciousness. This audio is currently in the process of pilot study in schools. I intend to create a research institute in the USA and to formulate a national educational forum in 2015. If your child’s school would like to sample an audio, please do contact me via my website. You can view the film here: Resonance – Beings of Frequency >> https://vimeo.com/54189727 A free download of one Crystal Ki audio immediately available - Perfect to use in your home or your school https://www.dropbox.com/sh/1c6g18o851bz3ns/AACmZYOmfX9rKgmcz TcwYyeHa?dl=0 Janine Regan-Sinclair – www.thecrystalkifoundation.com and www.crystalki.com Janine is the Founder of The Crystal Ki Foundation and is currently based in the United Kingdom. She created the Crystal Ki Healing System and the 21 Day Mind Detox. Her self-help audios are transformational mind detox and development programs and she has published 4 books to date. Janine is a pioneer in the field of complementary healthcare and is also an internet TV & Radio Host/Producer.

I am Janine Regan-Sinclair and my area of expertise is Human Energy Realignment. In 2003 I formulated a new Healing System called Crystal Ki that alters the negative frequency waves in the body and in the energy field around the body, as well as in property and land. I have been keeping myself, my family and my pets clear of the damage of these RF waves for years now using the Crystal Ki system; a powerful frequency cleanser than improves health on many levels.

The Crystal Ki Healing system safely works on a cellular molecular level. I believe these 5-minute bursts of positive frequency will dramatically reduce the risk of disease from exposure to RF waves. In fact, a daily immersion in these 5-minute frequencies of positive-ness will become the means of eliminating RF damage. In addition the positive frequencies cleanses other toxins and pollutants affecting emotional traumas. How? Positive frequencies allow brain and body cells to release negative energies and restore the body and mind to a state of good health. Imagine children being better prepared to receive instruction first thing in the morning, in the safe environment of their classrooms. The Crystal Ki System will also increase their levels of focus, attention, concentration and performance. Their overall health will be positively affected now and in the long-term. The sooner we start healing and protecting the children from intruding and damaging frequencies, the better for children, their parents and their teachers.

The Crystal Ki digital audio recordings are immediately available for your home and your child’s school. I also believe we can reduce the problem of bullying which is so prevalent in our schools. How? There is a collective and interdependent improvement realized by raising the positive frequencies within an individual’s brain and body cells. As you add a cleansing of energy fields at the school place and within the learning space there will be an increasing level of positive energy and light within the students, faculty and staff. Creating these positive conditions for growth facilitates the healing of fear, anger and victim consciousness. We welcome your purchase of our healing audio CD’s and books available on our website.

Educating Autism lear Horizons Academy is a school for children who are moderately to severely impacted by autism. Through our program, children diagnosed with this disorder receive a tailored educational program that integrates speech, behavioral and occupational therapies designed to meet their individual learning and developmental needs. This comprehensive approach is vital to help children with autism acquire the skills necessary to be able to lead productive, independent lives in the future. We fill a critical void in Utah County by serving children who no longer qualify or who have “aged out” of publicly-funded early intervention services, but who are still in desperate need of comprehensive resources.

C

A New Facility to Serve Utah County To accommodate the growing demand for our services, Clear Horizons has raised more than $4.4 million of a $6.5 million capital campaign to build a state-of-the-art, 31,000 squarefoot facility on a ten-acre campus in Orem. This new building is located close to the University Parkway I-15 exit in Orem. Through the development of this new campus and the resulting expansion of our educational and therapeutic programs, Clear Horizons will be able to triple the number of children served at any given time. We will also be able to expand the number of children we serve to include junior-high and high school aged children with programs tailored to their unique needs.

Quick Facts About Our Work •In 2007 a study was released that showed autism impacted 1 in every 133 children in the State of Utah. A study released the spring of 2011 shows that number has increased to 1 in every 77 children. •Clear Horizons currently can serve a maximum of 32 full-time students due to space restrictions. This new facility will allow us to expand up to 100 full-time students. •Our students primarily come from three school districts: Alpine School District (50%), Provo School District (38%) and Nebo School District (12%). •Clear Horizons admits students regardless of their family’s socioeconomic situation. Our program fees are based on a sliding scale in order to accommodate every family’s needs. -29% of the families we serve fall below the 2011 Federal Poverty Guidelines -52% of the families we serve fall below 51% of the 2010 Median Income for Utah County -65% of the families we serve fall below the 2010 Median Income for Utah County •It costs Clear Horizons $26,000 per child/year to provide the comprehensive team of resources required to make an impact in that child’s future. The State of Utah’s Carson Smith Special Needs Scholarship contributes a maximum of $7,040 per year for each child that qualifies in our program. On average, Clear Horizons publicly fundraises more than

$18,500 per year per child to make up the deficit. •Our current student to teacher/paraeducator ratio in our classrooms is 1:1.5. This does not include our therapists and other administrative staff. •Clear Horizons is a founding member of the Utah County Autism Resources working group that brings together nonprofits, school districts, university officials and members of the medical community. Our focus is to strategically work together to address the rise of autism in Utah County. •Currently University of Utah students benefit from a formal internship with Clear Horizons where they gain handson experience and are overseen by our certified occupational therapist. Discussions are underway with Utah Valley University and Brigham Young University to create formal internship programs as well. by Carol Walker

HOW TO DEAL WITH SELF CRITICISM WHAT does it feel like to be a good friend? Think of a time you’ve been a good friend. You stood up for somebody. You were in their corner. You had their back. You offered support when they were discouraged and a hug when you knew words weren’t enough. You know you’ve done it. You’ve been that friend for someone else. How did that feel to show up for somebody like that? What does it feel like to have a friend that will reach out to you when you’re overwhelmed? You deserve a friend like that. That’s right, you deserve it. You deserve to feel supported. You deserve to feel encouraged and loved. You deserve it and you are worth it. You probably don’t hear that enough, so let me repeat it: you are worth it. Even if people tell you this all the time, you still might be having a hard time actually hearing it: you are worth it. Maybe you were convinced from a

young age that you’re not worth a whole lot. Maybe you’ve kicked down when you’ve tried to stand up for yourself. Maybe there are some voices in your head that try to tell you that you’re not worth it. You deserve to have someone stand up for you. That someone is you. It’s sounds simple enough, right? Be your own best friend. But you probably know that it’s often easier to be your own worst enemy. Negative thoughts creep into your mind. Self-criticism. Self-doubt. Self-blame. The voices in your head can be relentless. These voices compare you to others and highlight your flaws. Here’s a simple practice for getting out of this pattern of self-criticism. I learned it from Rick Hanson, the neuropsychologist. BE FOR YOURSELF “Several times a day, ask yourself this

question: Am I on my own side here?” Think about it. Am I on my own side here? Am I being a friend to myself? This question is important. It can change how you are thinking and it can change how you feel. This simple question opens up space for contemplating different ways that you can be treating yourself. It opens up the possibility of showing yourself some compassion. Here are some good times to ask yourself this question:

If you’re feeling sad, stressed, anxious, angry, irritated, frustrated, or disappointed. If someone is trying to push you into doing something that you don’t want to do. If you are struggling to do something that would benefit you (like exercising or quitting smoking).

When you ask yourself if you are on your own side, think about times that others have been on your side. Think about how that made you feel to have somebody show up and support you. You might also find it helpful to think about times that you have been a good friend to others. What did that feel like? Did you feel strong, energized, and empowered when you were able to offer love and support to someone else?

rience, but by giving them attention, you strengthen their hold on you. Rather than feeding those thoughts, shift your focus. Shift your attention toward showing yourself compassion. How would it feel to show some love to your inner child? How would it feel to show up as a friend? Allow yourself to feel into these feelings. Notice how they make you feel inside of your body. Being mindful of these feelings, ask yourself, “Being my own best friend, what’s the best thing to do here?” Then do it. And see how it feels.

PICTURE YOURSELF AS A CHILD It can also be effective to picture yourself as a little boy or a little girl. There is still that sweet, innocent, vulnerable child inside of you. How would it feel to have the opportunity to stand up for that child? How would it feel to stand up for him or her in a way that perhaps nobody ever did? This is your opportunity to show some real love for that little one—some real love for you. FEEL INTO IT TO CREATE A SHIFT There is much more to you than the negative self talk and self doubt. Those voices are simply one part of your expe-

BEST BONE BROTH FOR LEAKY GUT 2014

was considered by many to be the year of the gut. We learned that leaky gut is linked with belly fat, that gut bacteria imbalances are linked with obesity, and even that exercise and whey protein increase the health of the gut microbiome. With all this new science, we still need to get back to the basics in the kitchen to support gut health. Nutrient-rich bone broth has been a favorite staple by many functional medicine practitioners and primal nutrition experts. When prepared properly, this gelatinous substance is rich in healthy minerals, collagen, cartilage, glycine, and more. What Is in Bone? Bone is mineralized collagen (hydroxyapatite + collagen); in fact, by weight, bone is nearly 25 percent collagen.1 In addition to collagen, bones are rich in osteocalcin (a compound that helps stabilize the mineral structure of bone), albumin, and alkaline phosphatase (an enzyme that helps neutralize bacterial endotoxin). Cooking bones in a stock can help liberate these nutrients, which are hard to get from other dietary sources. The marrow from bones has long been used to increase red blood cell count.2 (In the video below, we discuss how to cook the bones to get the marrow out prior to making the broth.) Getting Collagen and Glycosamino-glycans from Chicken and/or Pigs’ Feet When cooked in a broth, beef knuckle bones, chicken and pigs’ feet, and fish heads release many glycosaminoglycans, gelatin-like substances that include keratin, hyaluronic acid, and chondroitin sulfate. These natural shock absorbers are great for repairing the health of the gut, skin, hair, joints, and more.

THE TRICK TO GET REALLY THICK GELATINOUS BONE BROTH I’ve been experimenting with bone broth on and off for the past six years, and have recently found the best strategy to get really thick, gelatinous bone broth.

STEP 1) Purchase organically raised beef marrow and rib bones, wild-caught salmon heads, and either chicken or pigs’ feet. If you can’t get the feet, you can settle with knuckle bones, but I’ve found that pigs’ feet in particular really help get the broth thick and gelatinous. STEP 2) Cook marrow bones at 400 degrees for 35-40 minutes. Pull out the marrow and eat or save and mix in a vegetable dish. STEP 3) Place cooked marrow bones, ribs, fish (salmon) heads, feet (chicken, pig, or beef), and knuckle bones into a stock pot. Fill with 4:1 ratio of water to apple cider vinegar. (I have a 16-quart stockpot, so one 32 oz container of vinegar works well.) Let sit for at least 20 minutes, then bring to a full boil and simmer for 24-48 hours. NOTES: Make sure to use filtered water and organic bones. When I first started making broth shortly after finishing college, I didn’t have the financial resources to buy organic bones and filtered water. I discovered several years later that my heavy metals (arsenic, lead, and cadmium) were extremely elevated, so I paused on the broth and did some chelation. (The metals could have been from other sources besides the broth, but my intuition told me broth was part of it.) STEP 4) After 6-12 hours of letting stock simmer, add vegetables and

spices. To get the alkalinity up in the cooking, I like combining chopped carrots, celery, onions, leeks, bay leaves, collard greens, and tarragon. (But you can add whatever you’d like!) TIP: Blend some or all of these vegetables in a food processor or Vitamix prior to putting into broth. This allows for a much darker and tastier broth. STEP 5 FINAL STEP) Once the vegetables have been in broth for 12 to 18 hours or so, I’ve found that you’re not going to get much more yield by cooking longer. About 20 minutes before pulling the broth off the stove, you want to add chopped parsley. Sally Fallon discusses the rationale for this step in her book Nourishing Traditions; but, in brief, it helps to chelate the minerals and collagen components so that they are bio-available in your broth. Let the broth cool and then filter it into glass jars. After the broth has cooled completely, you’ll have fat on the top. Simply scoop it off and throw away. Much of the endocrine-disrupting chemicals that animals collect are fat soluble. Enjoy your broth as a stand-alone drink or base for cooking vegetables. The meaty-like flavor enhances the palatability of the vegetables, and makes them easier for kids to enjoy as well. HAPPINESS RUNS IN OUR FAMILY. THE

five best words to say to anyone in your family is “Happiness runs in our family”. Isn't that what we all want? Happiness. What does that mean “Happiness runs in our family?” Human nature seems to give enormous attention to negativity. We whine and boob about everything. We want to control the universe and bully people - even our children into doing whatever we dictate. We blame others and make excuses. When it comes to illness and disease, we are quick to declare “that” runs in my family that's why I am sick. So why not give the same intention to Happiness? Many years ago when all 5 of my children were still at home and bickered - as siblings will do - over nothing. I put my arms around my two fighting sons and whispered gleefully “ Happiness runs in our family”. They were stunned, standing there in shock that I didn't yell at them and send them off to our dark basement dungeon for fighting. Just remember, I said; "Happiness runs in our family." It stuck. Interestingly enough, it shifted the energy in the situation immediately. The boys stopped bickering and went off to play. I started saying it - becoming our family's mantra and still do it today. Does it mean your kids won’t fight? No... But it will change

how YOU, the parent (or spouse) reacts to the situation. Love will prevail. It takes a bit of practice but when you can adopt such a positive, uplifting approach to your view of your family; it will cure diseases of the heart and mind. Happiness will resonate. Science has shown us that there is a Biology of Belief ( book by Bruce Lipton). Your DNA is influenced by what we think and say. So if you want healthy DNA to pass on - be nice - you are what you think and believe. In 2013, a post ran in the Huffington Post; The Six Words You Should Say To Your Child. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ rachel-macy-stafford/six-words-you-should-say-today_b_ 3863643.html Rachel reported that she was impacted by this report. “... college athletes were asked what their parents said that made them feel great; that amplified their joy during and after a ballgame. Their overwhelming response: 'I love to watch you play.'" The article entitled, "What Makes a Nightmare Sports Parent and What Makes a Great One," which described powerful insights by Bruce E. Brown and Rob Miller of Proactive Coaching LLC. Rachel commented, "Although I finished reading the entire piece, my eyes went back and searched for that one particular sentence - the one that said, "I love to watch you play." I love to watch you play. I do! All our children played sports. Did I ever say it? I sure felt that I loved every minute of it. I often felt it was the highlight of my day to go to a game they were involved in. I loved watching them dance, sing, play in trees. I remember sneaking out the back door quietly to watch my two youngest build a fort in the grass reeds along our river bank underneath the plum tree. And they would talk and wrestle and climb the tree to jump into the small river that was in the back yard. Having more fun then I could ever have arranged for them. I love to watch you play. Dr. Bobby Low, Ph.D. performance psychologist suggests that it is not about the win or a loss in a game being played that creates worth. The greater value is in nurturing the relationship with your performing child by inquiring “Did you have fun or asking, what was your favorite part of the game.” I admit I slip up now and then and ask my 6-year-old grandchild - “well, did you win?” I’m trying to be better because what I mean to say is “ I loved watching you play and remember happiness runs in our family."
