DEPRESSION

is destroying the quality of life for millions of people. It impacts not just the individual suffering from this debilitating condition but their loved ones stand by helpless to know what to do. In our experience, using innovative brain science technologies and micro nutrient therapy to improve brain chemistry has been effective in solving health problems for our clients where other treatment methods have been unsuccessful. We use a multi dimensional approach to our recovery oriented system of care where each individual client can customize a treatment plan to include different modalities for the most comprehensive impact to improve symptoms. One of those components is the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) involves the use of a very short pulsed magnetic field to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. Since the 1980s, TMS has been used to study the nerve fibers that carry information about movements from the brain to the spinal cord and onto the muscles. In the late 1990’s physicians began to explore the therapeutic potential of transcranial magnetic stimulation for the treatment of a variety of diseases, with depression being the most thoroughly studied to date. Since then, numerous trials have been conducted to investigate the safety and efficacy of TMS as a treatment for depression, with the two largest randomized trials being conducted with the NeuroStar TMS Therapy® System. NeuroStar TMS Therapy, a treatment for depression, is a non-invasive, outpatient procedure which uses a pulsed magnetic field to stimulate function in brain regions known to affect mood. This innovative technology is indicated for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder in adult patients who have failed to achieve satisfactory improvement from one prior antidepressant medication at or above the minimal dose and duration in the current episode. The NeuroStar® System is the first TMS device cleared by the FDA for the treatment of depression. Life Integrative Health Center in Provo is the only approved NeuroStar TMS Therapy provider in Utah County.

EDITORS NOTE WITH

winter and 2014 fast approaching we continue to fight the good fight against addictions and focus on reaching families. Our objective for 2014 is to help your family live a better, wiser life – whether it is overcoming addictions, depression, anxiety, PTSD, chronic pain, recovering from cancer chemo or day to day adversity and heartache that has shaken you to your very core. We want to help you and our community, keep kids safe, help families heal and provide uplifting, inspiring content in each issue. Last year we worked diligently to breakdown barriers to treatment and information as it relates to addiction recovery. Often the focus was only on substance abuse and alcoholism, but we recognize; pornography is devastating families, prescription pill abuse is resulting in more deaths than cocaine and meth together nationally. Drug distribution is reaching into our elementary schools as is gang influence – but yet, so many folks still dismiss and poo-poo away the seriousness of this problem. One of our most amazing realizations was that recovery from any illness, injury or chronic unwanted behaviors can be more successful when brain chemistry is balanced

and micro nutrient therapy can address unknown deficiencies. Seems pretty logical. As 2014 dawns, Facing the unknowns in a changing healthcare front with so many friends and neighbors that we know losing health insurance or favorable coverages it is now more important than ever to BE WELL. we are now in our fourth full year of providing addiction recovery resources to families and growing with our expanding wellness and good health resources. We continue our fight to educate families so they can make informed, proactive choices for wellness and health regardless of the condition that is causing suffering. Our desire is for our Live-Wise-Life publications and the resource directories to help you in your journey towards overcoming adversity, finding recovery and living a better wiser life. Please share. THE MARIJUANA DEBATE WHILE the use of recreational “pot” rages upward and it battles with alcohol as the gateway drug for future hard core drug abuse – the debate over legalizing the use of marijuana is growing in popularity and confusion. This past year, a couple of states legalized recreational marijuana use as well as expanding medical marijuana laws. Many substance abuse advocates for recovery of course resist the move to legalize “pot” use –which we absolutely understand why. However, the misunderstanding in this debate comes from not having the information required to make responsible decisions. Recreational pot and marijuana used for medical procedures are not processed the same way. The arguments against legalizing the use of marijuana for medical purposes lie in our ignorance and prejudice. But when we consider how many thousands of pharmaceutical drugs are prescribed everyday come with pages of health warnings for the risks associated with their use – it is a hard case to make that somehow medical marijuana (especially the correctly processed chemical form) would be bad for you. Below is an excerpt from an interview with a Mom of a child with Dravet’s Syndrome (form of severe epilepsy) and the Libertas Institute now advocating legalization. “The treatment is a form of high-CBD cannabis (marijuana). Among kids with a severe epilepsy syndrome, 80% of children are responding positively with at least 50% improvement. That’s unheard of with any other treatment for severe epilepsy syndromes, especially with Dravet syndrome. None of the kids I know of with Dravet syndrome are seizure free, but most are definitely improving. And they are able to wean from some of their other meds that are not helping and causing negative side effects.” It takes knowledge and experience to grow the high-CBD strain of cannabis, and it has to be carefully tested to make sure it is pure and consistent and the dose is correct For more information about this interview please visit: http://libertasutah.org/interview/mother-ofchild-with-severe-epilepsy-wants-medical-marijuana-in-utah/

Energy of Solutions Integrative Recovery of Brain Chemistry Neurological Approach: Our program recognizes first and foremost the neurological changes that take place in the brain as a result of addiction. If these changes are not addresses directly, the brain will not heal, and the addiction has little chance of changing. Our approach to brain science helps the brain to recovery from devastating damage caused by drugs and alcohol along with underlying causes of depression and anxiety.

Proper Nutrition: Chemical dependencies and alcoholism go hand-inhand with neglected nutrition. For the body’s nutritional balance to be restored, the brain must be supplied with vitamins, minerals and amino acids necessary to restore proper chemical balance. A quality micro nutrient program is part of our recovery oriented system of care.

Detox Services • Methadone • Suboxone • All Opioids • Alcoholism Aftercare: After your initial 21 day program the aftercare program must support the brain corrections that have occurred and are still changing. Neurological support (ongoing treatment as needed) and micro-nutritional support to ensure deficiencies are remedied. Our treatment approach includes these important elements as part of our recovery oriented system of care throughout the year.

THE POWER OF VITAMINS NBC's Vitamin Ignorance

I WOULD

like to apologize for NBC News. It seems that the organization that brought us Lowell Thomas, John Cameron Swayze, Chet Huntley and David Brinkley has lowered its standard of reporting. NBC's supplement-bashing headline article, “Vitamins don't prevent heart disease or cancer, experts find” displays an ignorance of clinical nutrition that is difficult to ignore, and, thanks to its media prominence, can't be. Of vitamin supplementation, NBC specifically said that a “very extensive look at the studies that have been done show it may be a waste of time when it comes to preventing the diseases most likely to kill you.” The “very extensive look” encompassed 24 preselected studies. It looks like they just possibly may have missed a few, such as these: Multivitamin supplements lower your risk of cancer by 8%. An 8% reduction in deaths means the lives of 48,000 people in the US alone could be saved each year, just by taking an inexpensive daily vitamin pill. 72% of physicians personally use dietary supplements. The multivitamin is the most popular dietary supplement taken by doctors. High serum levels of vitamin B6, methionine and folate are associated with a 50% reduction in lung cancer risk. Those with higher levels of these nutrients had a significantly lower risk of lung cancer whether they smoked or not. Vitamin D reduces cancer risk. Studies on breast and colorectal cancer found that an increase of serum 25(OH)D concentration of 10 ng/ml was associated with a 15% reduction in colorectal cancer incidence and 11% reduction in breast cancer incidence. Vitamin D increases breast cancer survival. Women diagnosed with breast cancer had increased survival for those with higher serum 25(OH)D concentrations. In those with lower vitamin D concentrations, mortality increased by 8%. Risk of heart failure decreases with increasing blood lev-

els of vitamin C. Each 20 micromole/liter (µmol/L) increase in plasma vitamin C was associated with a 9% reduction in death from heart failure. If everyone took high enough doses of vitamin C to reach 80 µmol/L, it would mean 216,000 fewer deaths per year. To achieve that a plasma level requires a daily dosage of about 500 mg of vitamin C. Vitamin C prevents and reverses radiation damage. The Japanese College of Intravenous Therapy has produced a video for people wishing to learn more about large doses of vitamin C. All four parts of the video are also available at first-

law.wordpress.com. Vitamin C arrests and reverses cancer. Oncologist Victor Marcial, M.D., says: “We studied patients with advanced cancer (stage 4). 40 patients received 40,000-75,000 mg intravenously several times a week. . . In addition, they received a diet and other supplements. The initial tumor response rate was achieved in 75% of patients, defined as a 50% reduction or more in tumor size.” You can download the intravenous vitamin C protocol that he used free of charge at doctoryourself.com/RiordanIVC.pdf. Intravenous vitamin C cancer therapy for cancer is presented in detail on video, available for free access at riordanclinic.org/education/symposium/s2010.

Increasing vitamin E with supplements prevents COPD [Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema, chronic bronchitis]. 800 IU vitamin E per day is a successful treatment for fatty liver disease. Alzheimer's patients who take 2,000 IU of vitamin E per day live longer. 400 IU of Vitamin E per day reduces epileptic seizures in children by more than 60%. Vitamin E supplements help prevent amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This important finding is the result of a 10year-plus Harvard study of over a million persons. Vitamin E is more effective than a prescription drug in treating chronic liver disease (nonalcoholic steatohepatitis). Said the authors: “The good news is that this study showed that cheap and readily available vitamin E can help many of those with this condition.” So I would hereby like to make amends for NBC's hatchet-job on vitamins. In the interest of fair and balanced reporting, which I am sure NBC wholeheartedly stands for at least in principle, now you know the rest of the story.

“400 to 800 IU of vitamin E daily reduces risk of heart attack by 77%.”

NBC News said, “Vitamin E does no good at all in preventing cancer or heart disease.” Here's more of what NBC failed to report: Natural vitamin E factor yields a 75% decrease in prostate tumor formation. Gamma-tocotrienol, a cofactor found in natural vitamin E preparations, kills prostate cancer stem cells. Gamma-tocotrienol also is effective against existing prostate tumors. Vitamin E reduces mortality by 24% in persons 71 or older. 300 IU vitamin E per day reduces lung cancer by 61%. Vitamin E is an effective treatment for atherosclerosis. “Subjects with supplementary vitamin E intake of 100 IU per day or greater demonstrated less coronary artery lesion progression than did subjects with supplementary vitamin E intake less than 100 IU per day.” 400 to 800 IU of vitamin E daily reduces risk of heart attack by 77%.

MAKE YOUR OWN SUPER REFRESHING FLAVORED WATER THE

human body is composed of 55%-78% water depending on your body type and size. Water is essential to life. But people still do not drink enough water everyday and soda pop has taken over. All recipes require 2 quarts of water or less depending on how much fruit you add to the water. You can use tap water or purified/filtered water. A glass pitcher is better than a plastic pitcher as it allows the nutrients to infuse without being interfered with by the plastic. And having a lid for the pitcher is best as then refrigerator odors wont seep into the water. Fruit and herbs are best when fresh and in season but you can use frozen as well and you can purchase fresh herbs even out

of season. If you wish to make your drink a bit sweeter 単 please choose a sweetener such as STEVIA that is non toxic and is a natural sweetener. Let your water and fruit sit in the refrigerator overnight for best results. Most should retain their freshness and zesty taste for up to 3-4 days with the lid attached.

THE ULTIMATE IN CRIMINAL DEFENSE MOST people see guilty criminals and immediately make judgments or shy away. These are the “scum of the earth.” “Not in my backyard.” “ That criminal deserves to rot in jail.” “ You know, addicts never change – they just steal from their neighbors to get their drugs.” Those are just a few of the remarks directed at someone who is traversing through the legal system with pending criminal charges or in treatment for drug addiction. “One of the reasons why I believe our system of justice incorporates leniency is because it understands that discovering the actual truth about what happed is very difficult. It also recognizes that honest mistakes can be made in that process.” For Christians who are looking for an

advocate to help in a criminal defense for their loved one, the desired outcome would be to have an attorney who upholds principles of love and charity in dealing with those who are suffering – not just the victims, but the offenders as well. Mr. Hartley proposes that those Christ-centered principles would include treating the offender with •Loving patience, kindness and forgiveness •Loving inquiries, healing and compassion •Loving with the presumption of innocence treatment •Loving association among sinners with the purpose to save

This is quite a radical view in our secular society to approach criminal defense as a believer in Christ. Defending criminals is unpopular work for an unpopular people but when the

accused is actually innocent, our Constitution provides that we uphold “innocent until proven guilty.” And when the accused are indeed guilty of the crime charged, society is always better served when we love and work to correct, heal, and rehabilitate the offender, not treat them like “throw-aways.” Justice allows for consequences to be measured and restitution to be honored – but not injustice. Taylor Hartley has written a thought provoking account of the morality of criminal defense. For those who study and practice law, this perspective would indeed enlighten and enhance any criminal defense practice. For families who have loved ones currently in the legal system, this book can offer hope and encouragement for the future. Expect to have your views challenged. ATTORNEYS WHO BEAT CHARGES How you can tell great attorneys from the fakes

ALL

cases, from drug charges to speeding tickets, revolve around two things: The facts of case and the law of the crime charged. A good criminal defense attorney knows how to analyze each. The objective should always be to get a case dropped before a trial is scheduled. But often a plea must be entered for guilty and then a family would want to have the best sentencing alternative possible to incarceration. The Facts Every case has facts that your criminal defense attorney must either accept or fight. For example, you can either concede you were at the bank when it was robbed or you can fight it with an alibi; you were across town at grandma’s house. Your case would be analyzed by looking at the facts as the police claim they happened. Then the question would be asked, what’s wrong with that version? What’s different? Who else has seen the flaws in the government’s claims? What shows the inconsistencies in the government’s allegations? As an example, there is a case that was won where the client—let’s call him Bob—was accused of a DUI. The police report claimed that “Bob” weaved out of his lane. Bob said no way. His Attorney got the dash-cam video and saw that indeed, Bob stayed inside his lane at all times. Case dismissed. Any good criminal defense attorney, will take the time to listen to your side of the story. More importantly, a good attorney will ask you plenty of questions about the facts so the charges can be overcome. The Law When you are charged with a crime, that crime has specific “Elements.” Elements are legal requirements the government must prove beyond a reasonable

doubt. The facts of your case are applied to the crime you are charged with. For example, cops arrest you and two friends for drug possession because they find a pill in a car all of you are in. The law says the government must prove you possessed the pill; that it’s actually contraband like ecstasy and not an aspirin; and if the pill is controlled, like oxycontin, that you never had a prescription for it. An example of a case that was won where a man—we’ll call him John— was charged trespassing and disorderly conduct. “John” drove by a house a cop told him to leave from. When he drove by, the cop pulled him over and arrested John for trespassing. John told the cop to go **** himself; that upset the cop, who charged John with disorderly conduct too. Before trial, his attorney ran a motion to dismiss. They argued trespassing on public lands, i.e. a road, is impossible. They also argued that swearing at a cop is a constitutionally protected right. The attorney agreed

with the cop’s facts, but just argued that what John did was not criminal. The judge agreed. Again, case dismissed. Any good criminal defense attorney, will find ways for the law to help

7 Qualities of a Great Criminal Defense Attorney

N

ow that you know what your case is about, you should understand what to look for in someone that is going to present both the facts and the law to a jury. 1. Great Criminal Defense Attorneys are passionate. Most criminal defense attorneys claim they are “aggressive.” But you don’t want an overbearing or mean attorney, you want a passionate one. They should love criminal defense law and care about their clients. This is a critical moment in their lives and they need someone who will stay up late at nights to protect them with knowledge, expertise and all the resources they can gather to support their clients efforts for a good result.

2. Great Criminal Defense Attorneys are prepared. Amat Victoria Curam: That’s Latin for “victory loves the careful” or “victory loves preparation.” Some attorneys rely on their charm or likeability to win cases. Great attorney’s rely on preparation. They should know a case inside and out before the opening arguments. If you want to win, find an attorney who is careful and prepared. 3. Great Criminal Defense Attorneys tell stories. Your story has to make sense. If you want to see how judges think, watch an episode of Judge Judy. She has a great line, which is, “If it doesn’t make sense that’s because it’s not true!” A good attorney will tell your story in a simple way that lets people understand why you’re telling the truth. 4. Great Criminal Defense Attorneys see cases through the jury’s eyes. Sometimes we get so caught up in how we see the world we forget to see events through the audiences eyes. That’s what a

jury is, an audience. And they are trying to understand whom to believe; who should win. Your case should be prepared as if it was going to be explained to 8 random people off the street because that’s what will happen. Good attorneys think about the jury and yours should too. 5. Great Criminal Defense Attorneys have their own style and charisma. Your attorney should feel comfortable in his or her own skin and present with charisma. Remember the famous line “If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit.” Johnny Cochran said that about the glove in the OJ Simpson trial. Whether you agree with the verdict or not, Johnny had a charisma and style that led the jury to free OJ. Your attorney should have style and charisma. 6. Great Criminal Defense Attorneys have integrity. The only way for a jury, and just as important, a judge, to believe your attorney—and you—is for your attorney to have integrity. If the jury or a judge thinks your attorney is lying, they’ll think you’re lying or at least covering something up.

It is possible to minimize the harm resulting from illegal conduct and accountability is the key. Accountability requires action and absolutely changes everything when it comes to results. Many criminal defendants are stuck in the same patterns that resulted in criminal charges. Utah Sentencing Alternatives offers a coaching program to get clients moving again.

That’s a sure way to lose your case. Ask around for an attorney with a good reputation with judges . Integrity wins. 7. Great Criminal Attorneys will look for additional resources to assist in the pre-sentence process when a guilt plea is accepted. Families who have a loved one facing charges can fell intimated by the process of looking for an attorney and may be concerned about the costs and the process ahead. There are so many additional resources available to attorneys to assist their clients get a good result from the court even prior to sentencing. Treatment options for substance abuse as well as sex/pornography offenses. Assessments for substance abuse, theft, domestic violence and mental health. Special classes for anger, domestic violence, Prime for Life for DUI’s. Pre-sentence report consulting to help the client fill out the appropriate forms.

X FACTOR BEHIND A WINNING LIFE WE

all know people that seem to have this natural ability to bounce back after bad things happen. Often that buoyancy can appear annoying to the rest of us who seem to drag through adversity as if it was mud. Who are these people??? How do they do that? Were they born that way? Are they faking it? What’s wrong with me? There is some debate among thoughtful academic types about the inherent nature of resiliency vs. skill learned. I tend to go with - you are born this way. That resiliency is rooted in your developed brain chemistry

from birth. Certainly as you grow this is a trait that can be developed and strengthened, but if you didn't “come this way” developing this skill will be far more challenging, but that, for the most part, the human family is far more resilient than they know. In the face of awful adversity, abuse, trauma, disaster, we all have the ability to rise above these events in our lives to “right”ourselves. Often we are completely unaware of such experience we just do it. Set aside the big adversity and look at how every day is filled with events - small events that we have to overcome. It is how we cope.

Losing car keys, wrecking the car, ending a relationship, burning your dinner, losing a cell phone. Life is messy. Life can seem to be filled with unending anxiety. This stress can create a floundering feeling for years. Perhaps there is a myth out there that leads you to believe that this indicates a ruined life. That you are a failure. This isn't how my life is supposed to “be” ? Millions, millions of people throughout history have been able to set aside the negative impact after they have experienced horrific events and have done well in the face of these awful experiences. They overcome.

Some will only survive - some will go on to thrive and flourish There is a growing body academic research and an entire field of positive psychology that is dedicated to studying the positive side of the human experience and looking for ways to reintroduce to society the truth that you can overcome, you can cope, you can flourish You can transform how you think about adversity and when you feel overwhelmed and can’t cope - it may seem impossible to consider that you could develop this skill. You can become more resilient. Resiliency reduces hopelessness, prevents depression ad anxiety, increase optimism and brevets or shortens the length of illness. Resiliency improves a person’s well-being. Set a new routine to start each day with recalling three things that went well during the day. Write your experience in a journal or workbook. They do not have to be large in importance, they can be random things that happen during the day- not something that has to be planned. So ask yourself,

• Bioidentical Hormone Replacement

how did that make you feel? What was good about it? Do this well being exercise every day for 30 days - reflecting and see if your optimism improves. Being resilient is an X-factor for anyone who wants a winning, rewarding life.

LOSING WEIGHT WITH HCG WITH

the start of the new year, weight loss remains the number one resolution for Americans. While Americans seem to be obsessed with the idea that we can eat whatever crap we want, drink gallons of soda every day and somehow still look like super models and hot super athletes. As I sit down to write this article, I have a half eaten donut and a 32 oz soda cup next to my laptop. Two thirds of U.S. adults are overweight or obese. That staggering statistic drives an insatiable appetite for solutions —preferably ones that are quick and easy. On Google the term “weight loss “ brings up over 97 million web sites dedicated to the subject. According to health.usnews.com/health-news/diet-fitness/diet/arti cles/2010/08/03/5-weight- loss-websites-that-work . The 5 best websites for weight loss are listed. Marie Claire has a list of 7 best websites. There are sites for best calorie counter, best recipes, best gym to join, best clothes to wear while working out, the best fitness program and what is your weight loss iq. etc. So the first thing you should consider is what do you really want to accomplish? Do you want to lose weight or just be in better shape? Do you want to eat better or work out more? Do you love to cook but want to count calories to cut down on amount of your food intake? Or are you like me and really just want to take a few pills, do some leg lifts while watching The Bachelor (like 5 leg lifts) and still be able to drink my soda. (the really bad stuff that has that fire-retardant ingredient in it) The hot ingredient these days is HCG. Dr Oz talks about it, Kevin Trudeu in his “weight loss cure” talks about it, but what are they saying? In theory, the hCG hormone is supposed to suppress hunger and trigger your body's use of fat for fuel. hCG reportedly resets your thyroid and

hypothalamus, while re-establishing communication that affects your body's insulin levels. The claims seem to center on fast, easy weight loss. Imagine losing a pound a day and never feeling hungry. Those that have had success with it believe it's the long-awaited miracle cure for weight loss. Is the HCG diet safe or too good to be true? So what is HCG? HCG is human chorionic gonadotropin, a hormone produced during pregnancy. As a prescription medication, HCG is used mainly to treat fertility issues. HCG is not approved for over-the-counter use, nor has it been proved to work for weight loss. Companies that sell over-

the-counter HCG weight-loss products are breaking the law. It is a controversial weight loss method and while the skeptics abound so do the advocates for it's success. It is recommended to only seek treatment from an authorized medical provider and certainly as with all weight loss programs consult with your Doctor as this program also recommends severe calorie restrictions. It is administered as drops under the tongue or as an injection. if you decide HCG is the program for you, it should include a nutritional component so you are eating healthy even though you are on a low calorie diet, have a trainer for the proper element of physical fitness be monitored while dieting and a good

LEPTIN THE MASTER HORMONE LEPTIN

is made up of fat cells. It is a hormone that travels through the blood and up to the brain. It can cross the brain-blood barrier and heads to the bodies command center – which is the Hypothalamus gland. The brain uses Leptin as a measurement of your fuel. Much like a gas gage measures the fuel in your car. When your Leptin is low, it sends a signal to the brain saying it’s time to get food. When Leptin is rising you get a signal to your brain you are full. When your brain/body doesn’t make Leptin as it should, it never gets the “I’m full” signal. When this happens your brain bases its metabolic rate and responses on its belief of what Leptin is doing. This slow Leptin response makes for a slow metabolism and results in a Leptin resistance. Do you pay attention to how and when you eat as much as you pay attention to the calories? When you understand the role of Leptin as the King of Hormones in the body you will see how disruptive your eating patterns are and frankly that poor old King Leptin doesn’t have much of a chance to go to work and rule the bodies metabolism. Leptin is the most powerful hormone in the human body. It acts as a messenger – specifically like an immune system cytokine. Hormones are managers of energy in the body, and they answer to Leptin. To regain normal hormone balance and restore metabolism rates, you must restore natural vitality and rhythm to your diet- the how, why and where of eating. According to Byron Richards, author of The Leptin Diet; There are 5 rules of Leptin. Following these rules will help create a healthy lifestyle of eating based on the science of Leptin.

1. NO meals or snacking after dinner. All meals should occur within an 11-12 hour stretch from morning to night. And you should finish eating at least 3-4 hours before falling asleep for the night. 2. Eat 3 meals a day. Contrary to the new popular idea that you should eat many small meals during the day – this messes up Leptin. Have 5-6 hours between meals, no snacks/ 3. Don’t eat large meals, eat slowly. 4. Protein for breakfast. 2 eggs is perfect. Yes everyday protein for breakfast. 5. Reduce carbohydrates When you are Leptin resistant, and you have this poor eating clock – you subconsciously define a “I’m full” signal based on the following: • I eat everything in sight • I don’t stop until I feel stuffed Anything else leaves you with a nagging feeling that you are starving. (And Leptin doesn’t enter the brain when this is the signal) For more information about Leptin “The Leptin Diet” by Byron J. Richards on Amazon.

BILLIONAIRE DROPOUT How are so many college dropouts making millions – and even billions – of dollars?

IN

1972, Steve Jobs enrolled in Reed College, and six months later he was a college dropout. In 1975, after spending two years at Harvard College, Bills Gates became a college dropout. Michael Dell, founder and CEO of Dell, Inc., media mogul Ted Turner, and fashion icon Ralph Lauren are all college dropouts. And they each are billionaires. The newest member of the Billionaire College Dropout list is Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg who, after starting what would become the world's largest online social network from his dorm room at Harvard, became a college dropout during his sophomore year. As Facebook went public in 2012, his net worth was estimated at around 10 billion dollars. Even many of America's millionaires--about 20 percent, according to a report from Forrester Research--never even attended college. The idea of a Billionaire College Dropout may be counterintuitive and contradict what we are taught in our society. I was always taught to first go to college and get an education, and then you can make your millions. My wife was taught anything less than a master's degree would result in poverty. Hyperbolic, maybe. But it illustrates the emphasis our society puts on higher education. So if conventional wisdom tells us it's necessary we go to college in order to make a lot of money and to be contributing members of society, how are so many college dropouts making millions--and even billions--of dollars? Is it luck? Is it genetics? Malcolm Gladwell, in his book Outliers , suggests with a lot of practice in one area and a little bit of opportunistic luck, you have the ingredients for success. So should we start teaching our young people to quit school and go start a business or invent something? Of course not. There is a little luck involved, and there are thousands and thousands of nonmillionaire college dropouts. Not to mention that teaching our young people to quit is not the best first lesson on their journey to success. But there is obviously something extraordinary happening here; and over the last 20 years, there have been advances in psychological research which have shed some light on why some college dropouts go on to be billionaires. Dr. Carol Dweck, professor of psychology at Stanford University--whose previous work also included time at Columbia University and Harvard University-- has devoted her life's work to helping understand these questions. During her career, her primary research interests have been centered in theories of intelligence and of motivation. The combination of these two research interests has led her to the development of a motivational theory called Mindset. She masterfully shares her research with us in her new book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success . In her book, she illustrates two competing mindsets we have: Fixed

Mindset vs. Growth Mindset. "In a Fixed Mindset, students believe their basic abilities, their intelligence, their talents, are just fixed traits. They have a certain amount and that's that, and then their goal becomes to look smart all the time and never look dumb. In a Growth Mindset, students understand that their talents and abilities can be developed through effort, good teaching, and persistence. They don't necessarily think everyone's the same or anyone can be Einstein, but they believe everyone can get smarter if they work at it." In Mindset , Dweck explains her theory as it relates to intelligence. She also measures her theory on five main concepts: how people handle challenges, obstacles, effort, criticisms, and success of others. An individual possesses a Fixed Mindset when they believe their intelligence is fixed--that they were just born smart (or not smart). This Fixed Mindset is then connected to self- confidence and worth, so anytime a Fixed Mindset person appears not smart, their confidence and self-worth will go down. And as such, a person with a Fixed Mindset will respond to these five concepts in a certain way. Fixed mindset individuals always have to appear smart. This causes them to avoid challenges; because if they fail at the challenge, they see this as an insult to their intelligence. They give up easily to avoid looking dumb; this is also known as self-handicapping. They see effort as fruitless and demeaning to their intelligence. They falsely assume that if they have to put any effort into building their intelligence, it must mean they are not smart. They ignore criticism--even useful, positive criticisms. They feel threatened by the success of others. As a result, Fixed Mindset individuals may plateau early and achieve less by settling for mediocrity. In contrast, Growth Mindset individuals respond differently to these same situations. Growth Mindset individuals believe their intelligence in malleable. They believe they can grow their intelligence and learn things--causing them to want to learn and to seek out knowledge, and motivating them to embrace challenges and seek to overcome obstacles. Growth Mindset individuals see these adversities as opportunities to learn, grow, and develop new skills. These individuals are not fazed by setbacks; they are able to push through the challenge with persistence. They see effort as the path to mastery--which means if they fail a test or lose a game, a Growth Mindset person would see it as an opportunity to work harder and put in more effort in order to achieve. They learn from the criticism. They acknowledge others who are successful, taking the opportunity to learn from them and to discover what it is that made them successful. As a result they achieve even higher results

and this also gives them a greater sense of free will. For a person with a Growth Mindset, there are no limits. The story of Superman illustrates this point well. Christopher Reeves was introduced to horse riding when he took a leading role in a feature film that required him to learn how to ride a horse. That interest in horse riding continued as a hobby for him for years until it was suddenly halted by a tragic event. In 1995, Christopher Reeves was thrown from his horse and suffered a severe injury--destroying his first and second cervical vertebrae, paralyzing him from the neck down. Medical science suggested chances for survival were slim and told him he would likely never regain any kind of movement. Christopher didn't accept that as an answer. He learned how to breathe on his own. He worked with specialists to practice breathing through a straw, always working to improve on the breathing strength and air capacity scores he set the day before. After a few consecutive days with dramatic gains in his breathing strength, the doctors become more optimistic. In six months, Reeves could breathe for long periods on time without the assistance of a ventilator. This motivated Reeves and with his Growth Mindset, he went to work. Five years after the accident, he began to regain movement below his neck. It started in his hand and then in his arms, and moved to his legs and torso--shocking the science community on its ends. His progress provided new areas of neuroscience research and a renewed hope for those with spinal cord injuries. His Growth Mindset and his relentless unwillingness to give into this adversity allowed him to overcome against all odds. Superman and many of these billionaire college dropouts possessed a Growth Mindset--allowing them to achieve greatness. Of course, we don't have to overcome paralysis or make billions in order to have a Growth Mindset. But the very same way babies never quit at trying to learn to walk and talk, we can develop an attitude of never quitting and always trying. Benjamin Barber, an eminent sociologist, once said, “I don't divide the world into the weak and the strong, or the suc-

OXYTOCIN Dr. Paul Stoller declares in the opening line of his E-book, Oxytocin, The Hormone of Healing and Hope; “How a hormone saved me - and what it can do for you.” Skeptical? You would be if it weren’t for the amazing personal experiences that by word of mouth spread and go viral. In July of this year, my 8 year old grandson came to visit and spend some treatment time at our wellness clinic for his integrated sensory disorder symptoms which included chronic anxiety, whining and serious clinging to his Mom. During his physician evaluation, our Doctor - out of the blue - said “let’s get you some Oxytocin.” I had never heard of it . While Dr. Stoller in his book, goes on to tell how his own experience with the “love hormone” saved him from debilitating anxiety, he had been prescribing it for his brain injury patients, children with cerebral palsy and children with autism spectrum issues without realizing it’s potential for healing a great many other ailments. My grandson experienced almost immediate relief that continued throughout the time they were visiting and his Mom continued to use it on a daily basis. It was simple enough as a nasal spray and can also be found in sub-lingual drop form. Gone is his chronic anxiety, his neediness and whining. Oxytocin is more accurately known as a neuropeptide and it is produced in the adrenal gland in both men and women. It is known to create feelings of trust, security, connection, calmness and contentment. It is incredibly effective and helpful in addressing mental health issues, grief, anxiety, cancer, addictions and other conditions. There is solid medical science behind the benefits of adding Oxytocin to a treatment plan. According to Dr. Stoller and my grandson's physician ñ One of the main benefits is the ability for Oxytocin to block fear, anxiety and panic input into the temporal lobe and is part of the limbic system which regulates emotion, behavior, long term memory and olfaction. This is also the part of the brain that modulates trust. Researchers have confirmed a link between Oxytocin and sociability. Since July, our physician has prescribed Oxytocin for our recovering heroin addicts, our ADHD/autism spectrum children and for a Mom who was grief stricken after the death of her son, a returning veteran who was suffering from PTSD . All these patients responded with significant improvement in mood. Oxytocin can be prescribed by your physician and would then be made at a compounding pharmacy. It is available most commonly as a nasal spray. Easy to use, doesn’t stink, have a taste or a smell. It is also available in under-the-tongue drops. Dr. Stoller’s book is available on Amazon. “Oxytocin, The Hormone of Healing and Hope” by K. Paul Stoller, M.D.

BE A POWER FOR GOOD IN

a world that is vastly conflicted and cultural standards are compromised everywhere we look, what does “good” mean. We have been bombarded by visual images on the TV and movies that truly desensitized us to the suffering of others. - we don’t think we can make a difference. It is too overwhelming. I know for me, during the time of overwhelming adversity of my own making, I was suffocating from my own suffering. I was the victim and the perpetrator of misery. It was not my intention to cause such great harm, but I did... So the last thing I could see was how serving others would make me feel better. It was all I could do to take care of my families needs and put on a strong, brave front ( or so I thought). I found no relief of my internal pain until I focused my attention on someone other than myself. Without getting into a moral imperative conversation about virtue or moral righteousness, good is just that - good. It is the Golden Rule. It is “do a good deed.” Do unto others what you would have them do unto you” but perhaps on a greater selfless level - be a power for good regardless of others intentions or your desire for attention and reward. RAK - random acts of kindness.

However more importantly, not just for strangers but be a power of good for those who need to lean on you. Not driven by guilt or shame or to add to our resume but just because you

oping power for good. Who is “leaning on you”? Your children, perhaps a neighbor in need, your employees or co workers. Are you a therapist and this is your profession? Are you

“Every man is guilty of all the good he didn't do.” —Voltaire are good. As a parent, our children lean on us for all our basic needs since the day of our birth. However is that enough to meet our children’s “need” ? I would contend that it is the parents responsibility to teach their children correct principles, be an example of honesty and integrity, responsibility and service to others. Stand up to bullies comes to mind. Don’t be a victim, have standards and values that improve your life. I would add that people have a responsibility to be a power for good outside their family, as well. Perhaps even as small as the chivalrous act of opening the door for someone is devel-

a public figure and your community leans on you? Do you work in law enforcement and both criminal and victims lean on you to be honorable? To me, being “good” is not only reflected in outward behavior but your heart. Eliminating contempt from your language, developing empathy... Frankly, just loving and forgiving people. If you have a heart of stone - then your outward efforts to do “good” are fake and phony. You are a liar. By being a power for good, you empower others and create positive results from selfless actions. Add this to your lifestyle. Everyone is capable of being and doing good.

STEPS TO A HAPPY FAMILY

WHEN

my children were between the ages of 6 and 16 ( 4 boys and a girl in the middle) our house was filled with chaos. The sibling bickering, tormenting and teasing was more than I could stand. All we did was scream at each other. Back in the early 90’s- I was watching an episode of the Oprah Show, and she had Maya Angelou on ( If I remember correctly). She was talking about things “running in her family” and she said the most profound thing I had ever heard. A huge light bulb went off in my head. So to paraphrase what I remember: “ If people say, diabetes runs in my family, and they believe it. What if you said - kindness or happiness runs in my family-and then you could believe that wouldn't that be better?" For heaven's sake, I was just dumbfounded that something so logical, so obvious could be so enlightening. I decided to give it a shot. “Happiness runs in our family” I would say to the children when they were arguing. I didn’t fight with them; I didn't yell at them. Happiness runs in our family - with a big cheesy grin. It worked. The kids looked at me like I was kookoo, but they stopped fight-

ing. So we started saying it all the time. Is it a perfect solution? No, but it had the muscle and we started to believe what we said - Happiness runs in our family. I believe that happy parents make for happy children. Depressive and negative attitudes are contagious in the home. Children quickly learn from the example set by parents. Now that my children are grown and reflecting on the years of working with substance abuse and people who really are suffering - there are a few simple steps to build happiness in the home.

• Be kinder than necessary • Eliminate contempt from your tone and language • Teach them correct principles and let them make mistakes • Tell them you cherish the time you have with them • Give them lots of hugs - 7 times a day • Listen quietly and patiently - help them feel their thoughts and opinions are important (even if you don’t agree) • Be willing to say you are sorry

And say every opportunity that comes along “ Happiness Runs in our Family.”
