However, like the most endearing stories of success, Kasha’s started in a much different place. He grew up living over a Brooklyn barbershop in a challenging family situation. sk any sports fan their opinion on Denver Broncos starting quarterback Tim Tebow. Then be prepared to pull up a chair and stay awhile. The 6’3”, 235-pound lefty has become the continent’s most discussed athlete since replacing Kyle Orton and his dismal 1-4 record in October. Tebow’s detractors cited his funky throwing

Yet Tebow, aided by a evidence of his stellar Broncos defense, engineered more fourth-quarter than any NFL rookie quarterback in his comebacks starts, earning him a spot on the AFC Pro first 10 Bowl team. The boys from the Mile-High City, led by their “Mile-High Messiah,” finished the regular season as skin-of-their-teeth AFC West champions with an 8-8 record. Despite falling to Kansas City, now quarterbacked by Orton, on New Year’s Day, the Broncos earned themselves a spot in the playoffs thanks to the San Diego Chargers beating the Oakland Raiders. Tebow began his improbable fourth-quarter win streak with an 18-15 overtime stunner against Miami, lobbing the tying touchdown pass with 17 seconds left. From there, after a loss to Detroit, he led the
Broncos to six straight W’s; two games ended in overtime, while five were decided by a touchdown or less. Bronco fans quickly embraced “Tebow Time,” including Coach John Fox. “He’s gotten better every week,” Fox said after another unlikely victory. “Six or seven weeks ago, people said he couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn.” Tebow’s usual postgame comments, meanwhile, are not immediately about football. “First and foremost I have to thank my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and thank my teammates,” he told FOX Sports. “It’s an unbelievable feeling.” Typical Tebow talk. The 24-year-old consistently references his relationship with God, causing listeners to love him or wish he would zip it. ...Controversy and Tebow are old friends. In 2010, the NCAA instituted what is commonly called “The Tebow Rule,” banning all letters and symbols written in players’ eye black after Tebow’s prominent display of Bible verses. The Alabama legislature has a bill pending that would allow homeschooled athletes to play for their local schools called “The Tim Tebow Bill.” The Jacksonville, Fla. native is used to stirring up strong emotions from fans and media. Dozens of social media webpages are devoted to admiring the quarterback but dozens more have titles like, “Watching Tim Tebow cry makes me happy.” ...Tebow shrugs off such criticism. “I’m not sure why [they criticize], but I Tim Tebow am extremely
blessed,” he said in a postgame interview. “God has blessed me with so many people that support me … People aren’t always going to like you, but you have to keep believing.” What about all those, even some well-known Christians, who advise Tebow to dial back his references to Christ? “If you’re married, and you have a wife, and you really love your wife, is it good enough to only say to your wife, I love her, the day you get married? Or should you tell her every single day when you wake up and have the opportunity?” he asked ESPN’s First Take. “And that’s how I feel about my relationship with Jesus Christ.” Such faith has been the hallmark of Tebow’s life from the womb. As told in a widely-debated 2010 Super Bowl commercial, Pam Tebow gave birth to Tim in the Philippines after contracting an often-deadly disease and being encouraged to abort. Along with his four older siblings, Tebow was homeschooled until college and volunteered in his parents’ Filipino orphanage. At the University of Florida, he dominated the gridiron, twice leading the Gators to the BCS National Championship while becoming the first-ever sophomore to nab the Heisman. He also was the first college QB to run for 20 touchdowns and throw for another 20 in a single season — a classic example of his preference to use his legs just as much as his arm. Despite his collegiate success, many considered Tebow’s preferred spread-option offense not viable in the NFL. To the surprise of many, Denver chose him anyway with a first-round draft pick in 2010. After releasing Orton, Tebow now sits ahead of lone backup Brady Quinn. Critics ding him for his often-low pass completion rate and

He also works with Dreams Come True, an organization fulfilling wishes of terminally-ill children. The Tebow Foundation has impressed former NFL coach Tony Dungy. “Tim has already demonstrated he is a young man of uncommon ability, determination and, most of all, character,” he says on the foundation’s website. “This foundation is just further evidence of his belief that what he does off the field is just as important as what he does on it.” No matter his location, Tebow frequently credits others before himself, including fellow Broncos. “I think my teammates make me look a lot better than I am,” he said. “I don’t think its ‘Tebow Time.’ I just think its ‘Bronco Time’ and the team steps up as a team.” Everyone knows, however, to Whom Tebow gives his first allegiance. “That’s the thing about my faith — it’s not just something that happens when you’re at church or happens when you’re praying or reading the Scripture,” he told the Associated Press. “It’s part of who you are, as a person, as a player, in your life and everything.”

“When I first [became a Christian] a lot of the movie studios wouldn’t hire me. They were afraid, not that I wouldn’t have talent, but that I would talk too much about Jesus. But what happened was I kept having hit records, which has nothing to do with motion picture writing – a disc jockey puts a record on and it becomes a hit.” Soon studios were back at his door. “God showed me this is why He put me on the earth. To write music, to write songs. I can’t think of anything that I’ve done since 1978 that I wouldn’t be proud of – I don’t do anything violent, vulgar, or dirty,” the 74-year-old says. “I try to write about hope … I try to give people inspiration.” More than that, the “master of disaster,” as he’s known for numerous hits in disaster movies, is passionate about sharing the message he heard on an early morning broadcast years ago. “I funded an organization called Faith Over Fear. I travel around the country and the European world and pray for people,” he explains. “I want to let them know there is a God ... If He changed my life, He can change theirs … I try to tell people that He is a miracle worker, that Jesus is a miracle worker. Just by travelling it shows that God has healed me of agoraphobia.” Kasha, whose new show In A Booth At Chasen’s is about Ron and Nancy Reagan, is convinced his many accomplishments enable him to share Who and what is most important to him. “God’s perfect love casts out fear, and it turned my life around,” he says. “That’s the centre of my life – Jesus Christ.”

...As a kid Kasha and his brother played extras in various movie trailers. It was there someone overheard him singing – and a showbiz career was born. Before long, awards and acclimations were rolling in, especially after moving to Hollywood in 1968. All seemed good to the world, but Kasha held a devastating secret that was destroying his life. “I had a fear called agoraphobia. Agoraphobia is a fear of outdoor spaces, pretty much locked into my home,” he recalls. Ceil, Kasha’s wife of 43 years, recalled to ASSIST News Service, “for two years, because of his agoraphobia, he wouldn’t leave the house; in fact, he wouldn’t leave his room. I had to serve all his meals in his room. He could not even get out of that door.” The anxiety disorder tied him to his Beverly Hills home, the only place he felt safe. Now in the spotlight with studios and artists expecting more everyday, Kasha put pressure on himself to be perfect, striving to earn the next award, looking for something that always seemed out of reach. “Why I was agoraphobic is that I was a perfectionist,” he says. “Even though the world gifted me with Oscars and other tokens of recognition for my work, my whole life was based on the bondage of achievement. I never truly felt the peace which I had once assumed would accompany that kind of acclaim. Always striving for the next plateau produced only emptiness inside me,” he explained to ASSIST. Desperate to free himself from his fear, Kasha tried to find a solution. “I tried psychoanalysis, but it wasn’t healing me,” he tells Living Light News. Then, on Oct. 8, 1978, at three o’clock in the morning, Kasha stumbled upon a message that would change his life.
“I couldn’t sleep and I turned on the television and watched the Robert Schuller show. He said God’s perfect love casts out fear (1 John 4: 18-19 of the Bible),” he recalls. “The writer in me turned it around to fear casts out love.” “This struck me, as I certainly knew what it meant to be paralyzed by fear,” he told ASSIST. “I got on my knees, placed my hand on the television and began to pray. In my prayers I said, ‘If there is a Jesus, please reveal Yourself.’ A tremendous heat overtook me, an allenveloping warmth. I was in an air-conditioned apartment where the windows were glued shut and suddenly they began to shake and open, and a light poured in … a blinding light. “I felt a powerful pressure in my chest. I couldn’t breathe. I knew something beyond my comprehension had taken place. The next morning I accepted Jesus …” This incredible, life changing Al Kasha experience transformed Kasha’s life like he couldn’t have imagined. “God saved my life and turned my life around,” he tells Living Light News. “When I came to know Christ in my life, I was healed of agoraphobia.” Determined to dedicate everything to God, Kasha brought his Christian faith into his work. “Everything I write I give over to God. Newsbriefs Dedication, sacrifice, and love something to sing about NASHVILLE, TN — It may not be “O Canada,” but the song “I Was There” will surely resonate with many hockeyloving Canadians. Country crooner Paul Brandt recorded the song in October for the 2012 World Junior Hockey Championships that’s being held until Jan. 5 in Edmonton and Calgary. Born and raised in Alberta, the country star was chosen to compose the theme song because of his connection to Alberta and the way he represents Albertan values in his music. Writing a song about hockey, a sport dearly loved by millions, was a bit daunting for the 39-year-old at first. “Hockey for people, it’s more than just a game,” he told The Edmonton Journal. “In some ways, it’s a religion.” But with an outpouring of inspiration from
the public sent by email, tweets, and Facebook, it only took the award-winning musician 20 minutes (and a couple of weeks of tweaking) to boil all the hockeyrelated emotions, memories, and symbolism into a stirring song. “It’s about dedication. It’s about sacrifice. It’s about love. It’s about the willingness to give everything,” Brandt told The Journal, explaining the meaning behind the song. Coincidentally, these same words also describe what Jesus Christ did for Brandt. “When Jesus came, He really changed everything,” he told Living Light News. “It’s the message of the gospel – of Jesus coming to save us from our sins by being the ultimate sacrifice when He died on the cross – it’s the thing that changed my life and that I pin all of my hope on.”
Baseball fan shows true colours PEORIA, IL — Joe Couri’s co-workers know him as a man who “comes to work with a new story at least once or twice a week.” And does he have a story to tell this time. The man from central Illinois happened upon a 2011 World Series Baseball cap autographed by the champion St. Louis Cardinals. The 38-yearold was driving on Interstate 94 when he saw the cap lying on the off-ramp among the debris where an accident had just occurred. He said he immediately identified the black and white cap because his brother gave him a similar one as a gift, but without the prized autographs. A few local baseball autograph experts have investigated the signatures,
including one from MVP David Freese, and say they appear authentic. But what’s more intriguing is that Couri, a diehard Chicago Cubs fan, told The Journal Star that he’d like to give it back to its rightful owner. A photo of the person wearing the cap or being able to identify the most unexpected name on it would suffice as proof of ownership. As of press time, no one has come forward to claim the cap. Couri said, if it remains unclaimed, he plans to donate the autographed memorabilia to a charity founded by Philadelphia Phillies’ Jim Thome, a Peoria native. The organization is having an auction in January to raise money for a children’s hospital.

how hockey shaped a nation and changed a hero’s life MISSISAUGA, ON — Hockey isn’t just a sport – it’s part of what defines Canada and many who call The Great White North home. But who could’ve known that the beloved sport also influenced everything from Canadian greats to modern Canadian dentistry? Co-written by hockey icon Paul Henderson and veteran sportswriter Jim Prime, How Hockey Explains Canada argues how hockey’s influence goes far beyond building Canadians’ patriotic spirit. In the book released last October, Prime spoke to 35 Canadian icons and was surprised at how much of their identity – and the country – was moulded by hockey. “It is a game that reflects our geography, it reflects our cold weather, it reflects us coming together as a people in hard times,” he told CBC. Henderson, who scored the Goal of the Century at the ’72 Summit Series, told The Toronto Star, “There are a lot of things
in Canada that make us (who we are) ... But they will never pull the country together (like hockey does).” While hockey will remain part of Henderson’s identity, he reveals in the book that his true identity is built on something more important. Henderson writes that even at the height of his career, he felt “frustrated and unsatisfied.” Then someone told him about the Bible. “I became a student of the Bible, spending hours reading it and other Christian books. It was only after two years of intense investigation that I decided to become a follower of Jesus – a Christian,” he wrote. “Obviously ’72 was a wonderful moment,” he told Living Light News. “The difference is that receiving God’s love and forgiveness has eternal significance.” Henderson’s currently touring the country with the jersey he wore during the historic final game, celebrating the series’ 40th anniversary. The tour wraps up in February.
Long life isn’t all about eating right RUSHOON, NL — Despite breaking the rules of healthy eating, a Newfoundland woman remains in good shape at 106. According to Marie Cheeseman, her mother Margaret Ellen Moores didn’t live this long because of her diet. “She never did eat healthy, to be quite honest,” Cheeseman, who lives with her mom in Rushoon, Nfld., told Postmedia News. Moores ate traditional Newfoundland fare growing up, which included salt beef, pork and fish. In her senior years, she’s developed an appetite for pizza and fries which she now enjoys regularly. Moores also has a sweet tooth. “She loves her sweets,” her daughter attests. When thirsty, Moores prefers to drink tea or
juice but she never drinks water. However, her daughter also pointed out that Moores doesn’t drink alcohol regularly nor does she smoke. Cheeseman did identify a couple of secrets to her mom’s longevity. “Her courage and her faith in God,” she told Postmedia News. “She has tremendous faith after having tragedies in her life.” Her positivity and zest for life also helped her live this long. “Good times I guess, when I got old,” she told CBC. “I didn’t have them when I was young,” she explained. MILWAUKEE, WI — What goes around really does come around. For a Winnipeg man, a selfless act for others saved his own life. Victor Giesbrecht was driving on Interstate 94, near Menomonie in western Wisconsin when he and his wife pulled over to help Sara Berg change a flat. Little did they know this random act of kindness would be repaid quickly. Minutes after the semi-retired couple were back on the highway, Mr. Giesbrecht indicated that something was wrong. “He said ‘I think I need your help. I’m having some problems,’ ” Ann Giesbrecht told the Associated Press. They pulled over their pickup truck before Mr. Giesbrecht blacked out from cardiac arrest. She called 911 and started flagging passing motorists for help, one of which was Berg, a
Hockey star scores TV miracle VIRGINIA BEACH, VI — Hockey player Mike Fisher wasn’t watching ESPN that lifechanging morning two years ago. Instead he was tuned into a Christian television program called The 700 Club. While the NHL centre may be known for his grittiness on ice, people didn’t know that Fisher had been suffering from a serious ear infection for a month up until that day. “[The show’s hosts] Pat [Robertson] and Terry [Meeuwsen] are praying, this is about two years ago,” Fisher recently told CBN. “And they said someone with a left inner ear infection, ear pops up, whoa! And that’s me. They just prayed that it be healed and it sure was. It went away and that was that. I knew I was healed. That was the Lord working!” Fisher appeared on the show to tell his story last

It says “ ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.’ We don’t have to worry what’s going to happen down the road. You just have to play your hardest, and if you’re on God’s team, that’s the only team that’s important.”

He was taken to the Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire. “I 100 percent believe God had a huge hand in it and that God did put me and Lisa and all those people in the right place at the right time,” Berg told Canadian Press. “I’m grateful I could be there as quickly as I could to help him.” “If she wouldn’t have come along, I don’t think we’d be here right now,” Mr. Giesbrecht told reporters during her reunion with Berg shortly before being released from the hospital. “I guess it was a good idea for us to stop and help,” said Mrs. Giesbrecht. “In return, this lady helped us. It was just a miracle, the way everything worked out.”

The Meaning of Marriage by Charles Colson
How did we get here, when it makes no logical sense? to one in which the marital partners primarily ask, “What’s in it for me?” “In short,” Keller writes, “the Enlightenment privatized marriage, taking it out of the public sphere, and redefined its purpose as individual gratification, not any ‘broader good’ such as reflecting God’s nature, producing character, or raising children.” As a consequence, this new understanding, which is supposed to be so liberating, he says, “actually puts a crushing burden of expectation on marriage and on spouses that more traditional understandings never did.” Because marriage is now all about me, no one is ever good enough, so we hang back, afraid to commit, waiting for the non-existent perfectly “compatible” person — meaning he or she is well-adjusted, beautiful, and can help us find sexual and emotional fulfillment. Or we drop the person we married when someone “better” comes along. So how can we get out of this? Well, their book, The Meaning of Marriage, lays out the solution in great and encouraging detail. It is written for singles, those in successful and stable marriages, and for those in the midst of marital crisis. The book is too rich to encapsulate in this brief commentary, but suffice it to say that the secret of marriage is grounded in the self-giving example of Jesus laying down His life for the Church. If Christians truly understood this and lived it out in their marriages, perhaps we could stop the decline and rebuild a culture of marriage. It should be an open and shut case. Study after study shows the beneficial effects of marriage and the selfinflicted harm that people experience when they ignore this evidence. Marriage is good for us in so many ways. Here is a tiny sampling: People who have been continuously married have 75 percent more wealth at s Charles Colson retirement than those who have divorced or were never married. Children in married, two-parent families experience two to three times more positive life outcomes than those who do not. Married people even enjoy better and more frequent sex! Yet the statistics also show our culture heading in the opposite direction. In 1970, 89 percent of all births were to married parents. Today, unfortunately, it is only 60 percent. In 1960, 72 percent of adults in the US were married. Care to guess the number in 2008? Fifty percent. How did we get here, when it makes no logical sense? My friend Tim Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York and his wife, Kathy, have written a brilliant new book that explains why marriage is in such dire straits, and how to rescue it. Stuff Happens by Phil Callaway Back in ninth grade I weighed a whopping 81 pounds with my pockets full of change, so I decided to beef up by engaging in a rigorous exercise program including weightlifting. My brother Dan informed me lifting weights above one’s head kills brain cells and he didn’t think I could spare many, so I opted for lying on my back and thrusting the weights into the air. On good days I could bench press upwards of 30 pounds. One Saturday, those 30 pounds got away from me and I broke their fall with my nose. It was the third time I had broken it, and to this day when I wiggle it with one hand it sounds like a man crunching peanuts. “Dad,” said my son some years ago, while gazing at my nose, “at least it’s not on upside-down. You’d drown in a rainstorm.” Laughter helps. But I still don’t welcome pain. That’s why I’m always amazed when I meet people like Reg Mellor. At 72, Reg is the reigning world champion of “ferret legging.”

will disappoint. Friendships will fail. Storms will come. Ironically, such a realization is essential to bringing joy to life. Removing the expectation that life will be fair is a vital stepping-stone to finding our funny bone. Part of the joy of existence comes in facing the unknown and overcoming it with God’s help. Perhaps I know now why I slept so well after a ride on our rocking chair. Maybe I realized the future would be wild, but worry was like that rocking chair. It gave us something to do. But it didn’t take us anywhere. I think I slept soundly for another reason, too. You see, Mom always ended the day with an old hymn. I can still hear her singing as I listened, my nose perfectly straight: “When peace like a river attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll. Ain’t No Journey Hopeless

n the movie Hurricane, starring Denzel Washington, there’s a thread that I’m sure warms the heart of every writer. A young man, whose life is full of distress, picks a book from a bin at a second-hand store and takes it home. The book not only changes his life, but because he is moved to connect with its author, in prison for a crime he did not commit, it changes the writer’s life too. When the young man and the writer meet, former boxer Hurricane Carter asks him, “Do you think it was an accident you picked up my book?” Hurricane implies it was not. He implies it was in the plan. The book was meant for that young man. It sets him on a path, a journey designed for him, a journey during which he would find
what he needed to live. It seems God often works that way. He puts things and people in our path, like books on the top of bins in second-hand stores, which give us what we need for that time in our lives. Some years ago, it happened to me. My family and I had enjoyed a wonderful vacation horseback riding in the mountains. We were on our way home and stopped to visit friends and attend their church. As we walked in we were handed a bulletin with a picture of a beautiful mountain peak on the cover. The pastor’s sermon was about taking what you learn

He didn’t preach theory, but used reallife stories to illustrate what he meant. When we returned home that night, the phone rang. It was my mother telling me my dad had died earlier

I’m sure the pastor of the church had no idea what I would go through in the next hours and days after his sermon, I’m sure he did not realize he was picking all those stories for me, and likely for others who heard him. But I believe that is exactly what happened. I was able to draw on the sermon, on those stories, and the stories in the Bible to regain my balance, my sense of identity, and my hope. A friend recently sent me this wonderful quote “And in Bible-story journeys, ain’t no journey hopeless. Everybody finds what they supposed to find ...” (from Sounder by William H. Armstrong). Talk to anyone who reads the Bible regularly and they will tell you the statement is more than true. The Bible story journeys are meant for each and every one of us. They will provide the hope, the joy, and sometimes just the dogged determination we need to keep going on the path we are meant to follow. Have you found what you are supposed to find? M
y kids keep asking me if I’ll bounce on the new trampoline with them. I keep telling them I can bounce without the trampoline, thank you very much. Besides, I could get hurt on that thing. Not just the average compound fracture, splattering on the ground kind of injury. No, I’m telling you. Women over 40 do not want to sass gravity. I’ve noticed, for instance, a younger woman can see a friend across the yard and give a big, friendly wave. Not so we of the over-40 crowd. If I were to give one of those big waves at this stage in my life, the hand/wrist part of the wave would be long over before that fluttery stuff between my elbow and shoulder stopped waving. I’m not sure I ever really want to be that friendly.
These days I have a different wave. For interested waveimpaired readers, here are the instructions: “Raise arm until elbow is almost even with shoulder. While careful to keep all of upper arm stationary, wiggle fingers, and only fingers, vigorously in a friendly fashion. Slowly and carefully lower arm. If no part of you has slapped another part, successful post-40 wave has been accomplished.” Let’s think it through. How can I get on the trampoline with this kind of instability? What if while my feet are touching the trampoline, the rest of me is still in the air? Couldn’t I get hurt when all that stuff is coming down and the rest of me is flying back up?
I’m not sure I ever really want to be that friendly. I might actually meet myself coming and going. Splitting atoms hardly seems more dangerous. I guess I could wrap all my not-so-stationary parts with duct tape or something. But that could take a lot of duct tape. It’s just one more reminder that life definitely has its ups and downs. Let’s “bounce” this idea around: for every “down,” God gives us an opportunity to become someone else’s “up.” Second Corinthians 1:3-5 of
the Bible says, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.” Isn’t it amazing that God can use our down times to help others in theirs? And according to this passage, for every down we suffer, Jesus Christ, who knows hurt to the max, gives comfort reaching so much deeper than the hurt. We can’t experience pain bigger than His comfort. No matter what we suffer, His comfort is immense enough to cover it. Not only cover it, fill it. Not only fill it, but overflow it! Knowing God, the Father of Compassion, comforts in mass quantity can add a little bounce to any day. The good kind of bounce. It’s guaranteed to put a spring in your step. No duct tape required. . Intimacy With God by Dr. Charles F. Stanley

elping us stay “connected” has become big business. Smart phones, Facebook, and Twitter give instant access to friends, family, work, and the world. But how much time do we spend building face-to-face relationships? Let’s go further – how much effort do we invest in connecting with God? What kind of relationship do you s Dr. Charles F. Stanley have with Him? Is He a distant Deity or your closest friend?
Created For Intimacy God designed mankind to relate to Him. That’s what it means when the Bible says we’ve been made in His image (Genesis 1:26).We’ve been given a spirit that can communicate with His Spirit. Just look at the world. Although God is the Creator, He never interacts with a mountain or star as He does with you. There is no higher honour He could have given us. But when sin entered the human race, it rendered everyone alienated from God. Our spirits were no longer able to unite with the Lord in close unity. However, Jesus Christ came to pay the penalty for sin with His death; now all who trust Him as their Saviour are spiritually reborn. Their connection with God has been reopened (Ephesians 2:1-5). Yet God doesn’t want our interactions to end at salvation; that’s where they begin. If we communicate with Him on a surface level, we hinder fulfillment of God’s goal for us – an intimate relationship with Him. In the last few years, the term “intimacy with God” has become a phrase Christians use, but how many know what it means? If I asked you to describe it, could you? Part of the problem is the word intimacy has become synonymous with sex. But we’re talking about a spiritual oneness not based on the physical senses. God is spirit (John 4:24), and that is how we must relate to Him.
Understanding Intimacy To help us comprehend what closeness with God looks like, let’s examine the writings of David, whom the Bible calls a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22). Psalm 63:1-8 gives a vivid description of His consuming passion. Yearning for God. The most obvious element in this Psalm is a thirsting and yearning (v. 1). Every other pursuit seems like a dry desert when compared to the fulfillment of a relationship with God. Awakened Spiritual Senses. The second aspect of David’s deep association with God is his ability to see Him (v. 2). A result of such closeness is the awakening of our spiritual senses. In learning to know Him, we “see” the One who is unseen. Our understanding increases and the Bible comes alive with meaning. New Values and Priorities. Soon our relationship with God becomes the best thing in our lives and takes precedence (v. 3-4). All possessions, power, pleasures, and prestige are empty after experiencing the fullness of knowing God. Satisfaction and Fulfillment. He captures our thoughts and
That’s what it’s like when we love God. emotions (v. 5-6). Do you know what it’s like to be in love? No one had to tell you to think about your loved one, your thoughts automatically flew to him or her. That’s what it’s like when we love God. The joy satisfies us as nothing else can. Trust and Dependence. God becomes our shelter in life’s storms (v. 7-8). Those who know intimacy with Him feel the safety that comes with submission to His will. Since they know His heart and trust His goodness, they have no cause for fear. Who wouldn’t want such a rewarding experience? But it won’t happen automatically. Consider how relationships develop. Close friendships aren’t instantaneous; they must be cultivated. In the same way, unity with God must be pursued.
Getting To Know God The first step is getting to know Him – who He is, what He does,
how He thinks, and what He desires. Even though God’s invisible, a relationship with Him is cultivated the way human friendships are. Time Spent Together. We won’t achieve closeness with God unless we invest time and effort. A neglected relationship simply won’t grow. Two-Way Communication. The most obvious way to become better acquainted with God is through two-way communication. But prayers are often monologues, not dialogues. We come to Him with concerns, but how often do we take time to listen? Although God delights in hearing our prayers, He also wants us to listen to Him. Since He speaks to us primarily through the Bible, that’s where we will most likely hear His voice. Vulnerability. Another factor is our willingness to be open and honest. Although the natural response is to shrink from vulnerability, we need to remember He knows us inside and out and loves us. Shared Interests. If we’re going to grow with God, we must share His interests. He’s attentive to our concerns, but do we care about His desires? Are you more interested in Him or what He can give you?
Results Of Knowing God Knowledge about God and experiences with Him ought to transform us, influence others, and prepare us for Heaven. Transformation. No one can have a relationship with God and remain unchanged. As we understand who He is, our love for Him grows. Our experiences with Him teach us He’s faithful and can be trusted. Influence. This passion for God is contagious. My granddad knew God intimately. As he told me about Jesus, a desire to know the Lord captured my heart. Preparation for Heaven. One day everyone is going to meet God. Will He be a stranger to you? The greatest investment we can make is a pursuit of a relationship with Him. The immediate rewards are greater than any sacrifice, but the treasure awaiting us in Heaven is beyond imagination. Dr. Charles F. RACING FOR A REASON
With a pack on her back and a trusty Bible on hand, 23-year-old Edmontonian Dania Spillett will travel to 11 countries in 11 months to impact lives as part of World Race.
by Melanie F. Gibbs Dania Spillett will soon live out of a backpack, sleep on bug-infested floors, and shower out of a bucket for 11 months. It’ll be the time of her life. On Jan. 10, Spillett will participate in World Race, a ministry of Adventures in Missions, defined as a stretching journey to serve “the least of these.” Participants visit 11 countries in 11 months, performing services like helping with construction, children’s ministry, leading worship and engaging in much prayer.
“I couldn’t see myself looking back on my life and not having gone on this trip,” says the 23-year-old International Business graduate from University of Alberta. “I believe there’s a reason we’re born in a privileged North America … [to] take our financial wealth and help provide for those who don’t have the means, and [to] use our resources to share the Word of God and His love around the World.” Katie Chestnutt of Beaumont, AB returned from her own World Race in November. She
tells how her group visited a bar in the red “I light district in Thailand. There she saw hundreds of women trapped in the sex trade, but after building relationships with her group, two of them found freedom. “There’s so much hope we haven’t tapped into,” Chestnutt observes. “God calls us to love our neighbours,” adds Spillett, “and I think we need to especially love on those who don’t always feel loved or don’t have parents or family to love on them. Those people and children need to know that no matter what their living situation or health, they’re princes and princesses in God’s eyes.” Spillett grew up in a Christian family, but she was a teenager when she started learning more about having a personal relationship with God. “There were times when I felt so down on myself or like I just couldn’t get anything right, and yet there was this God … who was graceful, forgiving and merciful towards me because He loves me unconditionally. There was a reason Jesus died on the cross, and that was so that He could bear our load for us instead.” Even when her mom died from cancer, having a relationship with Jesus brought Spillett peace. “I know that my mom had a relationship with God and that she went to Heaven to spend the rest of eternity with Him. That fact alone gives me hope knowing there will be a time when I will see her again,” she says, noting that she and her family were able to celebrate her mother’s life knowing it’s not the end.

As of mid-December, she had raised $7,200 from events like a bottle drive and a fundraiser party/silent auction. She’s also been looking after details like insurance and vaccines, plus picking up necessary travel items. In October, she spent a week in Georgia training with the rest of her team. “I’m excited about getting to meet so many new people and learning different languages,” she enthuses. “I’m excited to learn about different cultures – being completely immersed in them and living life like the locals. I’m excited about building relationships with our local hosts and with the awesome team members I’ll be living with. I also can’t wait to see 11 different countries in a year and for all the adventures that will come along with the trip!” “I expect this trip to change my life and to develop my relationship with God,” she explains. Chances

When his 20-year marriage ended, Rick Kelly didn’t expect to see anything positive from the ordeal. Worried about legal costs and shared custody of his young daughter, Kelly “made it more difficult than it had to be.” “I didn’t want to see the marriage go,” he asserts. He hit rock bottom. When a friend shared that there’s hope through Jesus, Kelly accepted Jesus Christ into his life, finally finding closure. And a new life – twice over. Jan, his wife of 13 years, had also experienced divorce after 25 years of marriage. “I can laugh about it now,” she states, joking that the divorce was her fault. “I couldn’t get along with my husband’s girlfriend – even though she was my best friend!” Jan befriended Kelly at church. When they eventually married, neither could have imagined it would ultimately save Rick’s life. After eight years, Rick’s kidneys began to fail. Jan was a perfect match. “For me, it was a no-brainer.” She then deadpans, “But if he ever leaves, I’m taking it back.” “We were joined together in more ways than you can consider,” Kelly jokes. “I realized that God had a plan. It was meant to be.” Feeling God’s leading, Kelly approached his pastor about starting a DivorceCare support group at North Pointe Community Church.
This international ministry encourages healing through friendship, community and support for all individuals in every stage of the divorce process. Jan was more hesitant. “Rick had a burning passion. [But] for me, it meant dredging up a whole lot of things long buried.” In spite of her reservations, the couple held their first 13-week session in January, using videos and group discussions. A third facilitator helps keep conversations on track. Topics include depression, loneliness, child care, reconciliation, finances, and emotional health. “Divorce is a sad time,” Kelly notes. “Sometimes people are rejected by friends, families, (even) church communities. They don’t see … where they now fit. They see themselves as failing. [We] try to reassure them that their value as a person is important … but nobody can do the healing but God.” Kelly is humble about his work. “[Jan and I] knew the trouble and hardship people (face),” he comments. “Financial difficulties, breaking up families, heartache, legal problems. [God] led me through some very difficult times in my life,

and now was the time to give back and help people going down that road understand [we] would come along beside them, because we had the experience of losing a marriage.” Cheryl and Paul Turner direct a group at West Meadows Baptist. Married six years, both experienced divorce, and both used DivorceCare to recover. When their pastor suggested starting a chapter, they began a group in fall of 2010. “The biggest thing, which may be true for most, is I am not the only one going through this; I have a group that understands,” Turner explains. “It’s strictly confidential,” she adds. “A lot of people don’t open up [immediately], until

they see the security and integrity of the group; no judging. We recognize the importance of having a group available for those that have no alternative (to divorce).” Kelly concurs. “When [participants] left, they had new friends, new interests. I could see things getting better for them for the mere fact that they came. We can’t fix their marriages. We’re just there to listen.” Held on Wednesdays from 7 to 9 pm, the next session begins Jan. 18 at West Meadows; Jan. 25 at North Pointe. “I don’t know why [God] uses me,” Kelly muses. “I’m not particularly skillful at anything other than the fact that I care for these people, I want them to get better, and continue in their own lives. But I know that going through DivorceCare, [participants] met some other people that they connected to, and found some hope.” He pauses. “If anything, maybe they can find hope.”

How many cups of coffee do you drink in a day? Two? Three? Have you ever thought about where that coffee comes from? Much of the world’s coffee comes from independent family growers that often live in abject parts of the developing world. Burundi is one such country. Located in Central Africa, it’s one of the five poorest countries in the world with many citizens living on less than a dollar a day. About half the size of Nova Scotia, Burundi has been plagued by devastating civil wars in recent years. Much of the population is farmers, and the main export is coffee. With coffee costing upwards of two to three dollars per cup, one might think coffee growing would be a lucrative venture for independent growers. Not so in Burundi, where the country’s so poor growers are unable to cash in even with a sought-after crop. “The poverty is extreme. But in the communities, there’s hope,” said Poul Mark, coffee expert and founder of Edmonton’s Transcend Coffee. “The kids had smiles in spite of having nothing; they still laughed, played and sang.” Mark’s doing more than feel pity for the plight of growers on whom his business is built. He’s putting his boots where his beans come from and doing something about it. “There’s a developing trend in the specialty coffee industry toward direct trade where we go into the country, meet the farmers and buy coffee from them,” says Mark. “What we want isn’t just a photo or marketing opportunity, which a lot of

It’s been said, “It’s not about the number of years we live, but it’s how we live those years that counts.” Thanks to improved medical care and emphasis on healthy living, longevity has increased for both men and women. Although inherited conditions exist that seniors cannot change, there are lifestyle factors that can make a difference in our wellness.
NUMBERS COUNT
Medical science now looks at the relationship of height to weight as an indicator of being overweight. Calculate your body mass index (BMI) by multiplying your weight by 703. Next divide this number by your height in inches. Divide that number again by height in inches. A measurement over 25 is considered to be overweight. Is your weight healthy or a health risk for now and the future? Reading labels is one way to stay in control of your weight. As you shop, scan the package or container. Know the servings per package and the nutritional value. Read the dietary value of recipes and prepare those with the health of your family in mind. Access your health risk with an online quiz, such as ones available at everydayhealth.com or heart.org.
WHAT’S UP DOC?
Schedule an annual physical with your primary care professional. Hopefully, you can see the same doctor each year and compare tests and reports. Are there changes in your body or blood analysis?
Any symptoms you need to discuss? Is there an adverse reaction to any medication? Your doctor or medical personnel may not be aware of these unless you speak up. If you feel a problem exists, make a note of these to discuss on your next visit. Don’t overlook an annual visit to your optometrist and a semi-annual dental visit. Seniors who maintain good vision and healthy teeth and gums can avoid other age-related diseases.

Seniors who exercise daily may have more energy, beat insomnia, improve their attitude, and achieve a better sense of wellbeing. All this and more – for a daily 30-minutes of walking, dancing, or working out on gym equipment. Check with your doctor first and find your “target heart rate” for a safe and effective level of intensity for exercise.

Joanne Kraft, author of Just Too Busy: Taking your Family on a Radical Sabbatical (Beacon Hill Press) got to a point where family life was chaos and no longer made sense. Her book is a thought-provoking analysis of her solution: for one year, this mom cut all activities outside of school from the family schedule. No sports, no music lessons … nothing. Sound extreme? Perhaps, and the adjustment wasn’t easy for Kraft’s children at first. However, apart from gaining new perspectives, her family learned an important lesson. Kraft writes, “When we kept our children out of their favourite activities for a whole year we were saying to them, ‘your wants don’t come first. Our family

comes first.’ ” In addition to warding off a sense of entitlement in their children, the Krafts experienced many day trips and activities as a family they wouldn’t have had time or energy for in the past. What can you remove from your family’s calendar?

No doubt, extracurriculars add value to childhood. So where is the line between healthy activity and chaos? Various parenting experts tell you to shoot for a balance between activities, free time, and family time. Others suggest the amount of activities according to age. Perhaps the answer is as simple as thinking of a volume knob. Turn up the music too loud and you want to head for cover. Dial it back to a happy medium and the music is enjoyable. Control the volume by giving up one stressor of questionable value at a time, then stop when your schedule works. When choosing activities to axe, ask your daughter if cheerleading or playing flute is more important to her? Cut second place. As well, insist on some family dinners per week. Is He your first step and first response when life gets harried and priorities get skewed?” It seems the way to balance today’s schedules is by asking yourself questions to find what works and doesn’t for your family. by Kim Perrone Before you crazyglue your kid’s hands to the front and back covers of a book, there’s something you should know: they will have trouble turning pages that way and you are missing an opportunity to help your child enjoy reading. You would be better off issuing some reading challenges!

When attempting to inspire a hesitant reader with a book that would appeal to her, you might not know where to start. Have no fear: thousands of booklists highlighting the nichiest topics are available for your entire family at goodreads.com/list. We’re talking lists with titles such as Best Books For Teen Boys, Best Books For Children That Adults Should Also Read, and Best Books For Reluctant Readers.

January 27 is Family Literacy Day (abclifeliteracy.ca). What a great opportunity to kick off a new reading challenge or habit! Be on the lookout for Literacy Day programs at your public library and your child’s school. If they don’t have something in the works, suggest they run a family reading night involving games, book giveaways, contests, and an author visit. Run a family contest over who can read a book such as Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham out loud in the most interesting manner!
BOOK BUDDIES
Older kids can be “Reading Buddies” to younger ones. Classroom Connections (classroomconnections.ca/en/ readingbuddies.php) has helped set up many opportunities to do exactly this across the country. Not only do older kids often find more enjoyment in reading through the Reading Buddies program, but you can bet such volunteerism will look rather nice on college applications. If you can’t find a location near you, prod your school or public library to add the program. Of course, you can try this concept at home by asking older siblings to read to younger ones. Even preschoolers can help read to a baby and point out pictures.
EASY AS ABC
Using the alphabet, you can create a reading list challenge of at least 26 books. For example, read one book where the author’s last name begins with “A,” another with “B,” the next with “C,” etc. As well, choose books involving animals (alligators, bats, condors ...), geographic locations (Antarctica, Belgium, Chile ...), or non-fiction topics (amethysts, bungee jumping, crayon crafts ...) Preschoolers can cut out items from magazines that begin with each letter. Glue pictures onto paper and form a book. Kids can help you write the names of the items below
(individually or as a family) after reading the books on which they were based. Was the book better than the movie or vice versa? Can you guess why certain scenes were left out of the film? Did the actors satisfy the images you had formed of the characters? You can find hundreds of movies-from-books at listsofbests.com – make up a list suiting your family. Studies suggest the key to getting excited about reading – or about learning anything – is to make it fun or relevant for your child. Really, reading is just another way your family can enjoy time together!

Quickly, you lift the lid and let out enough steam for the water to subside. Next time you boil rice don’t allow the heat to get so high or be ready to let out some steam. There aren’t as many choices when it comes to motherhood; often, we can’t lower the frenzied heat of life. However, we can let out steam regularly – plan a night with your friends. Girl time is your alternative to becoming a gurgling, oozing mess.

Girls’ nights involving easy activities, munchies, and girl talk are perfect for simple evenings. Try a game night – as long as everyone understands the rules, games provide a fun background for girl talk. Amazon.ca boasts a huge selection from classics to unique titles. As well, many popular games, such as Scattergories, come in Bible editions. Another easy evening involves a box of tissues, box of chocolates, and a chick flick. In case you’re wondering which movies qualify, any title which your husband refuses to watch because there are no explosions, car chases, or spaceships will do just fine. To choose a film, throw a few choices at your BFFs, direct them to movieguide.org for descriptions, then vote on the selection. Keep gatherings simple so you’ll want to make the evening a habit. Making yourself crazy with prep work takes the “simple” out of simple evenings.
This night takes more work, however, if you love cooking or are a serious “foodie,” try an international cooking night. Ask each girl to bring a recipe and the ingredients for part of a meal. Then share the fun of cooking together. For a calmer night, simply ask everyone to bring a complete dish, then sample and review the creations. Invite two or three such businesses and hold an evening of shopping.

Good female friendships serve to let off steam through laughter, empathy, and good advice. by Beth Bence Reinke, MS, RD When you hear the word “treat,” what comes to mind? Rich butter cookies, a creamy caramel latte, or a jellyfilled doughnut? Or maybe a thick, chocolate milkshake and some crispy fries. Ah, the sweet and salty confections we crave. The thing is, many of the goodies we desire are not good at all. They are processed concoctions containing chemical preservatives, food dyes, and harmful trans fats. There is nothing wrong with enjoying a treat. The key is choosing wholesome foods filling the body with healthy nutrients instead of junk. The next time a craving strikes, reach for one of these better-foryou treats or create one of your own.
FRUITY TREATS
With its natural sweetness, fruit is the perfect substitute for candy and syrupy desserts. Plus, fruits are bursting with diseasefighting
antioxidants, so try to eat a variety each day. * Frozen grapes. Wash well and allow grapes to freeze solid. They take a long time to eat so you get the full psychological benefit from their sweetness. * Strawberries and dip. Blend a quarter teaspoon cinnamon into a quarter cup of ricotta cheese. Dip strawberries into it to enjoy a delicious treat. * Applesauce. Spice up regular applesauce by stirring in cinnamon, or add a dollop of vanilla yogurt. * Chocolate-covered banana. A great treat if you’re missing summer, insert sticks into banana halves, coat bananas with melted dark chocolate, and freeze. * Fruit kebobs. Skewer chunks of fruit on a stick. Pineapple, mango, strawberries, thick banana slices, and melon cubes work well, but use your imagination. Try new combinations for new flavours. Dip fruit in lemon yogurt. * Fruity candy. Melt dark chocolate and stir in nuts or dried fruit. Drop by teaspoonful onto wax paper-covered cookie sheet and refrigerate until hardened.
CRUNCHY TREATS
Forget the grease-laden fries and chips. These snacks will satisfy your need to munch and crunch without the excess salt and fat. * Popcorn. Spray popcorn with cooking spray and toss with your favourite savory sprinkles, like chili powder and cumin or Italian seasoning and parmesan cheese. Get adventurous to find a new favourite. * Homemade French fries. Peel and slice potatoes or sweet potatoes and toss with olive oil, which contains good-for-you fats. Sprinkle sweet potato fries with cinnamon. Bake in single layer on a cookie sheet. * Nuts. Mixed nuts in the shell make a great treat because they take some time (and effort) to crack open and eat. A serving is about 15 nuts. * Trail mix. Mix together nuts, dried fruit, and whole grain cereal squares. Put quarter cup servings into snack-sized plastic bags to grab for snacks on the go.
CREAMY TREATS
You love creamy foods like ice cream and lattes because of their velvety feel in your mouth, right? These foods give you that same smooth texture without additives like emulsifiers and thickeners found in prepared foods. * Fruit smoothies. Put organic yogurt and two kinds of fruit into blender and puree well. Using banana gives extra smoothness. Try Greek yogurt for thicker consistency and more protein (12 grams per half cup.) To make freezer pops, pour smoothie into molds and freeze. * Pumpkin custard. Use your favourite pumpkin pie recipe, but without the high-fat crust. Bake in a pie plate or ramekins for individual servings. * Homemade ice cream. Make with organic low fat milk, fresh fruit, vanilla, cocoa, or nuts. Worth the investment in an ice cream maker, plus it’s an activity the whole family can enjoy. * Iced coffee. Brew strong coffee and add a tablespoon of real cream, instead of chemical-laden bottled creamers. Add ice, stir, and sip through a straw as if you bought it at the fancy coffee shop! * Cocoa. Heat organic milk, then stir in cocoa powder, a drop of vanilla extract, and a smidgen of sugar to move away from the ordinary hot chocolate taste. * Yogurt parfait. Use organic low fat yogurt layered with fruit and whole grain cereal. This one has it all – crunchy, creamy, and sweet! Thankfully, goodies don’t have to be loaded with sugar, fat, and a side order of guilt. Better-for-you treats can nourish your body while satisfying your cravings for sweetness, texture, and flavour. “the love of my life” for 23 years, Dr. Greg Olsen, an emergency room physician, Ireland says, “My priorities are faith, family, and being of service to others through my work.” She manages all this through her daily time with God, though this wasn’t always the case. She began her personal relationship with Jesus when she was 18 years old. She was living in Paris on the cusp of her newly-begun modeling career, but she did not feel comfortable in the place where she lived. In fact, she used to lock her door every night to feel safer. “My mom had packed a Bible in my suitcase, and out of sheer boredom, I picked it up and began to read. I knew I was seeing the Truth. Jesus became my best friend, Lord, and Saviour,” she tells Living Light News. Still, in the world of high fashion and Hollywood, living as a Christian was rarely encouraged or modelled. Ireland admits there were decisions she made then she would not make today. “I realize now I was trying to mould God into what I wanted Him to be, instead of allowing Him to shape my life,” she says. In the years following, her choices have slowly become more influenced by her faith and relationship with God. Though worldfamous for a career in an industry valuing looks above all, Ireland has spent far more of her time helping others. Aside from her business accomplishments, Ireland has been involved in a tremendous amount of charitable work, promoting awareness of family issues such as hunger, HIV/AIDS, arthritis, and breast cancer. The University of California named Ireland one of America’s top 10 women’s health advocates, recognizing her for her involvement in the March of Dimes and frequent public advocacy for timely and adequate prenatal care. Hardly the typical résumé of one of Hollywood’s self-absorbed elite. That’s because Ireland understands the meaning of true self-esteem. “If we get our self-esteem from superficial places, from our popularity, appearance, business success, financial situation, health, any of these, we will be disappointed, because no one can guarantee that we’ll have them tomorrow. It comes from having an understanding of the depth of God’s love for you.”

Relationships Drive-Through Talking by Dr. Greg Smalley After living separate lives, a retired business executive and his wife discovered a painful reality. Sitting at home one evening, the couple called some friends to see what they were doing. “Oh,” said the other wife, “we’re just talking and drinking tea.” The executive’s wife hung up the phone. “Why don’t we ever do that?” she demanded. “They’re just drinking tea and talking.” “So,” said the executive, “make us some tea.” Soon they sat with their freshly brewed tea, staring at each other. “Call them back,” he directed, “and find out what they’re talking about!” As the couple discovered, a relationship will be only as good as its communication. One way to enhance your marriage is by becoming an effective communicator. This involves many skills, but most importantly it means learning how to listen. However, listening takes time and work, that’s why so few practice it, much less master it. As a rule, the degree your mate feels heard and understood is the degree he will desire communication. Who wants to talk with someone who doesn’t listen? Therefore, if your hope is to become a proficient communicator, by using a special communication

Will that be all?” “Yes,” you insist. “That’ll be $4.99. Have a nice day.” This is a good example of effective communication that should take place in marriage. When you want your mate to clearly and accurately understand your “order,” you should use the “drive-through talking” method. One of you becomes the

Picture yourself ordering at a McDonald’s drive-through window. As you look over the menu, a voice from the speaker box says, “May I take your order?” “I’ll have a cheeseburger, fries, and a large Coke,” you say confidently. After a short moment of
customer and the other becomes the employee. As the customer, you first explain your feelings or needs by using “I feel” statements – as opposed to “You make me feel …” remarks. It’s also necessary to use short sentences so your mate can repeat back precisely what you are communicating. Next, your mate simply repeats what he heard. Then you get to “edit” his interpretation. After correcting

any misunderstandings, your husband continues to repeat your statements until you feel your feelings or needs are understood. Once you’ve finished sharing, trade places. Your husband will become the customer and you get to be the employee. He then places his order by explaining his feelings or needs. Your job is to repeat back what you hear him communicating until he is satisfied. This sequence continues until everyone feels heard and understood. During this technique, it’s important to remember the focus is not on creating solutions. Instead, the purpose is to understand each other’s feelings and needs. You can work on solutions after the “ordering” is completed or at a later time. In James 1:19 of the Bible it says, “… But let everyone be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger.” This verse explains the power of drivethrough talking. When your communication is slowed down, it’s much easier to keep the conversation from escalating out of control. Yet he sees beyond the ice. “There is more to life than just playing a sport, and that’s having that relationship and knowing God gives you gifts,” Booth says. Booth told Sports Spectrum he feels blessed to play. “I always thought maybe if I get to play on the fourth line or if I can just be up and down in the minors. Now it’s nothing but the grace of God that I’m playing and it’s awesome. All the glory really goes to Him. I’m just a servant.”

When David Booth discovered he was Vancouver-bound, he couldn’t sleep. Less than a month into his sixth season with the only pro team on his resume, the Canucks acquired the six-foot, 212-pound left wing in a four-player deal with the Florida Panthers on Oct. 22, 2011. The trade left him in “complete shock.” “It was a big change in my life,” he says. The 27-year-old played a vital role on Florida’s line, reaching the 60-point plateau in 72 games in 2008-2009 and earning the team’s fan-based MVP nod. It was his quickness and scoring ability that attracted the Canucks’ attention. Though Vancouver lost former Stanley Cup champion Mikael Samuelsson in the trade, they hope to be faster and more dangerous around the net with the younger Booth. “It will be a learning curve being in a hockey market, for sure,” says Canucks general manager Mike Gillis. Now that Booth has had time to adjust to B.C. and skate with “guys [who] know how to win,” he’s sleeping well. “I’m starting to realize how good of a team we have here,” he says of the team that last year fell one game short of hoisting the Stanley Cup. “It’s been a good transition for me and I’m just taking it day-by-day, and I’m not looking ahead into the future.” One thing Booth couldn’t see coming was a knee-on-knee hit by Colorado forward Kevin Porter on Dec. 6. While Porter received a four game ban, Booth suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament and will be out of the lineup for four to six weeks. While sidelined, it’s become clear to him that he’s part of a team preparing for another serious playoff run. “I mean, [playoffs] are something I’ve never done before, so I’d like to do as much as I can to help the team do that,” Booth says. “The ultimate goal though is not only to make the playoffs, but to win the Stanley Cup. I think that’s a realistic goal, something that you can obtain here.” With the Sedin brothers anchoring the first line and Chris Higgins and Ryan Kesler joining Booth on the “American Express” line, it’s a goal Canuck fans envision reaching.
That seemed impossible for Booth after the Oct. 24, 2009 match with the Flyers and Panthers. The Michigan State alumni took a brutal blindside hit to the head from Flyer Mike Richards and was knocked unconscious. Booth’s concussion kept him on the bench for three months and 45 games. He also missed playing for the U.S. Olympic team. On March 25, 2010, several weeks after his return, the NHL voted to penalize blindside hits like Booth’s. That same night, he suffered another concussion in a contest with the Canadiens. His season was finished, yet Booth experienced what he calls “the biggest moment of my career.” “Sometimes we get so caught up in ourselves and what we want that maybe we neglect the real important things,” he tells Living Light News. God became real to Booth at an Athletes in Action camp. “[The camp] made me realize the importance of knowing Christ, the joy that comes with it, and the forgiveness we can have from it,” he says. “All those things seemed so realistic to me, so it was a no-brainer that I was going to make [a relationship with God] the first thing in my life and not secondary.” Booth turned pro in 2006, immediately impressing coach Peter DeBoer. “He’s just a quality person,” DeBoer told Sports Spectrum. “He stands for the right things. He lives the right way.” “There comes a time when you really understand that this is a lifestyle and not something you do once a week,” Booth told the Vancouver Province. “It’s part of you every day and it made sense to me that Christ had a plan for me and I was going to walk in His plan — and not my plan.” Just one season removed from hearing fans chant, “Boooooth” every time he touched the puck, he only saw action in 28 games in the 2009-2010 season. His eight goals and eight assists were a far cry from his team-leading 31 goals the previous year. 2010-2011 wasn’t much better; Booth scored 23 goals, had 40 points, and was a minus-31. Before the Vancouver trade, he had one assist and was minus-6 in six games. Booth knows naysayers predict he’ll never return to his 30-goal peak. “I’m not here to prove … what kind of person I am, or what kind

She tried to mask it with drinking and drugs, and then a relationship that turned abusive. Her sophomore debut My Life showcased that intensely personal struggle, earning Blige her first Grammy nomination. From there, Blige’s star power grew swiftly. The “delicate ghetto-princess songstress,” released several more smashingly successful albums, including Share My World and Mary. The first batch of her nine Grammy awards rolled in, along with her first of four American Music Awards. Yet it wasn’t enough, and Blige’s descent into drugs, alcohol, and self-loathing quickened. “I ended up becoming my environment,” she told Parade. “I had no self-respect. I hated myself. I thought I was ugly. Alcohol, sex, drugs — I’d do whatever it took to feel better.” . Enter Kendu Isaacs, a recording industry

The two met in 2000, and though Isaacs eventually became Blige’s manager and husband, his most important role came when he encouraged the searching performer to turn her life over to Jesus Christ and guided her toward sobriety. “I think when you hit rock bottom — everyone hits rock bottom — they want to know where God is,” she told Buzzine. “… I believe God works through people. He sends people, and that’s what happened. I hit a place where I needed help, and I just started praying for Him to send someone to help me. You can’t do it alone, because when you don’t have any strength, you don’t have any strength to do it.” Yet the temptation to numb past hurts with a drink remained. Before a performance, Blige overheard Isaacs saying he was going to leave his then-girlfriend if she came home drunk like usual.
...Determined to not let that happen, Blige went to a friend’s home afterward where she was promptly offered alcohol. Remarkably, she declined and went home sober. The next morning, Blige heard the news: Aaliyah, another hit-making R&B singer and Blige’s close friend, had died in a plane crash. It was enough to bring her solidly into a relationship with God. “God is my mommy, my daddy. That’s the only thing that’ll keep my head up. If I don’t remember who I am in Him, I’m done,” she told Oprah. Blige married Isaacs in December 2003, and from there the hits and awards piled up. Today, she claims eights multi-platinum albums, selling over 50 million albums worldwide, and is the sole artist with Grammy awards in the pop, gospel, rap, and R&B categories. The singer’s latest endeavours involve the theatre as well as the concert hall. Blige’s song “The Living Proof” appeared on the soundtrack of the 2011 hit movie The Help. Then, on Nov. 21, she released My Life II, The Journey Continues to critical acclaim. “It’s not a competitor. It’s a sequel. In an extension of how far we’ve come,” she says on the album’s intro. “Not saying that pain doesn’t exist no more in our life, but now
we understand how to navigate.” Next on the docket — acting in the theatrical release of the Broadway musical Rock of Ages and as the lead in Nina, a biopic of musician Nina Simone. Both films are set for 2012 debuts. No acting role or industry accolade, however, can top Blige’s true identity: a beautiful woman created and loved by the Lord. “When I gave my life to Jesus Christ … I found out who I am. I’m a child of God,” she told Oprah.

If anyone has legitimate street cred, it’s Mary J. Blige. Born in the Bronx and raised in Yonkers, NY, the 40-year-old R&B singer grew up in the infamously tough Schlobohm Housing Project, nicknamed “Slow Bomb” by its struggling residents. Mary Jane was only four when her jazz musician father abandoned his wife and two young daughters. The next year, Blige was molested by a family friend. That chain of events propelled Blige onto a decades-long path of self-destruction. “[The assault] followed me all my life,” she told VH1’s Behind the Music. “The shame of thinking my molestation was my fault — it led me to believe I wasn’t worth anything.” Despite Blige’s mother Cora’s dedication to her family, exiting the slums seemed impossible. “Every day I would be getting into fights over whatever. You always had to prove yourself to keep from getting robbed or jumped,” she told Essence. “Growing up in the projects is like living in a barrel of crabs. If you try to get out, one of the other crabs tries to pull you down.” One bright spot in Blige’s life was the local House of Prayer Pentecostal Church. Her vocal talent, showcased in the youth choir, quickly won her praise. “People in church would say ‘You should do something with your voice,’ ” she told Newsweek. “And I’d be like ‘What? I am living in the projects in Yonkers. What am I going to do with my voice?’ ” Blige discovered the answer at a White Plains, NY shopping mall at age 17. She had just dropped out of a performing arts high school where she had studied music, but she still enjoyed singing. At a karaoke-style recording studio, she belted out Anita Baker’s “Caught Up In The Rapture,” then left with her friends. Now a high school dropout holding down menial part-time jobs, Mary J. Blige’s life was going nowhere fast, she thought. She was wrong. Through mutual friends, that recording eventually made its way to Andre Harrell, an executive with Uptown Records. He signed the talented youngster immediately. Blige’s first album, What’s the 411? was released in 1992, mixing traditional R&B with gospel, rap, hip-hop, and high-tech funk. The infectious combination won the young singer an instant horde of adoring fans, reaching double-platinum status and selling more than two million copies. But being “the queen of hip-hop soul” wasn’t all glitz; Blige felt an inner pain that only magnified alongside her fame.

Heather Williams’ story – of abandonment, abuse, and rejection – could have been a heartbreaker. However, her relationship with Jesus has spun the trauma and losses into gold. Last year, her introductory self-titled EP nabbed her a spot on Billboard Magazine’s Best Bets of 2011 list, making her one of only two Christian artists to do so. This Time Around, an upbeat pop-rock collection à la Kelly Clarkson, is offered as a “glimpse into her conversations with God.” I loved the soulful opener, “Beautiful Thing,” for its bouncy Middle Eastern rhythms and Williams’ playful vocal, full of confidence. She sets the album tone right outta the gate, announcing “This is a song for the brokenhearted / Two-time loser kicked out in the cold … Fix me, fix me / I wanna be a beautiful thing.” From there, the album revisits similar hopeful themes, mostly midtempo pop-rockers, and Williams never gets quite as edgy again. Many will enjoy the radio-friendly “God Is Still God,” the synthladen “You Are Loved,” and the buzzy closer “Breathe Again.” “Holes” features some interesting time changes and evocative lyrics, and it’s impossible not to appreciate her strong vocals throughout, especially on the prayerful piano ballad “Hallelujah.”
JILL PHILLIPS In This Hour jillphillips.com Review by Kevan Breitinger Fans of the wondrous Jill Phillips, and I count myself as queen among them, will rejoice in the arrival of In This Hour, her seventh album, delayed when her home was seriously damaged in last year’s Nashville flooding. If these 10 tracks are any indication, she’s back and better than ever. As always, her songwriting sparkles with intelligence, arrangements polished to a tee, and unmistakable integrity. I love the way opener “Show Up” eases from its orchestral warm-up intro to its smooth guitar-driven groove, and I love the timely message expressed in its lovely, soaring bridge: “No great things have I done/ Only small things with great love/ And love makes the world different.” This power opener alone is worth the price of admission. Phillips is a storyteller extraordinaire, able to beautifully balance a heartfelt delivery (“Find The Way” and especially the lovely “If You Were Here,” written about the loss of her father) over warm, rolling arrangements. Strong piano chords of “I Can See How It Happened” serve well as a contrasting anchor for her lilting vocal. Fans of Sarah McLachan will enjoy Jill Phillips, and her generous vulnerability only ups the ante.

include his Christmas and worship efforts. If there’s one thing you can count on with Smith, it’s that he continues to experiment with his music. The latest example of this is his second instrumental disc. Titled Glory, the 12-track masterpiece finds Smith partnering with the 65-piece London Symphonica to create some truly impressive music. While there may be no vocals, listeners still receive the illusion of going on an epic journey. The orchestra delivers the beautiful arrangements with an intensity that gives it a gigantic feel. Listeners are transported not only back to landmark movies, but also to modern day box office hits. Perhaps Smith has found his second calling? While “instrumental” may not be the first thing we think of when we hear his name, Michael W. Smith’s Glory is big and impressive. Even if you aren’t normally a fan of his music, seriously consider picking this one up.
MUTEMATH Odd Soul mutemath.com Review by Josh McConnell Indie band MuteMath has always flirted with going mainstream. Signed with indie label Teleprompt Records and exclusively distributed by Warner Bros. Records, the band has made countless late night television appearances, has landed massive tours such as opening for Matchbox 20 and constantly fills their own shows. Yet it’s hard to find the band being played on pop radio or stocked on retail shelves, leaving them on the fringe. Could the band’s third effort allow them to bridge the chasm? Titled Odd Soul, the album’s title track sets the stage for the next 12. With heavy emphasis on drums and bass, its explosive start-stop rhythm demands your attention. The throwback riff and funk tendencies of the track “Blood Pressure” will linger in your memory long after the album is finished. Meanwhile, “Allies” has a very New Orleans funk as the vocals elevate to an almost falsetto level. While there are certainly a few ballads present, most of Odd Soul’s songs are an upbeat fusion of heavy hitting drums, soaring keyboards, and engaging melodies. MuteMath has done it yet again with a disc that’s worthy of attention. Straddling the line between alternative and pop, Odd Soul is a must-add to anyone’s collection.
NEWSBOYS God’s Not Dead newsboys.com Review by Kevan Breitinger In all their various permutations, the Newsboys has long been a staple in the Christian rock scene. The band from Down Under has garnered five Dove Awards and numerous nominations since their mid-‘80s founding. When dcTalk frontman Michael Tait signed on as the band’s third lead singer in 2009, it was hard to imagine a more perfect fit for the band known for their upbeat pop-rock enthusiasm. God’s Not Dead is the band’s 17th studio album, a worship project consisting of seven covers of chart-topping songs and five original pieces.

This is the ultimate compilation of popular church songs, hitting many of the big ones, including Hillsong’s “Mighty To Save,” “Saviour Of The World,” and “Revelation Song” made famous by Kari Jobe and more recently, Jesus Culture. Each cover is served up with their signature sincerity and plenty of energetic synth work. The original material was more interesting to me, from the slammin’ opener “The King Is Coming,” to the slightly Celtic and very lyrical “All The Way,” to the bold closer “I Am Second,” by far my favourite track for its layered vocals and powerful lyrics. Some may wish for more originals, but Newsboys fans won’t be disappointed. SARA GROVES Invisible Empires saragroves.com Review by Kevan Breitinger The skill set of Sara Groves, prolific singer/songwriter and multiple Dove winner, is extraordinary. Highly respected for her ability to beautifully express spiritual responses to the social issues of our time, she wields her finest skills to perfection on Invisible Empires. Her warm, soft vocal, while not outstanding on its own, is the perfect vehicle to serve up her poetic, precise lyrics. She is arguably the best lyricist of our generation. It’s hard to believe they’ve been in existence since 1995 and just released their seventh major label effort in November. With a heavy focus on sharing the good news of Jesus Christ, the band has always been reminiscent of Kutless. Though they’re targeting a certain demographic with their light-grunge soundtrack, the overtly faith-based lyrics are the true focus of every release. Label mates Kutless also took this approach. This trend has continued once more for Slumber as they release The Anthem of Angels. Nothing is reinvented or even new as the band retains the exact same formula as in the past. The songs have a light-grunge tinge to their soft rock melodies, thanks to the gritty vocals and heavy guitar distortion. Lyrics are very straightforward in nature and not complicated, so listeners don’t have to dig deep to determine intention. Essentially, the disc is a worship effort with a little more aggressive soundtrack. If you enjoyed any of their past outings, you will most likely enjoy The Anthem of Angels. Just don’t expect a deep theological debate to stem from the listen afterward.

The Greening Of Whitney Brown is a beautifully produced morality tale about a spoiled pre-teenage girl who has to learn what’s really worthwhile in life. Whitney Brown is the most popular girl in her upper class school in Philadelphia. She makes the point that it’s not whom you know, but who knows you. Whitney is buying her wardrobe using her mother’s credit card when the card is declined. Her father, Henry, comes home to announce he lost his stockbroker job. Everything is taken from the family. All of Whitney’s society friends say they’ll stand by her. However, when she moves with her family to her grandfather’s rundown farm in rural Pennsylvania, she is shocked to find out there is no means of communication – no cell phone service, no Internet, and not even an old-fashioned telephone to keep in touch with her
and very appropriate. The movie has lots of strong morals. It admonishes love of money, selfishness, envy, lying, theft, and extols family, loving others, and contentment with what life gives you. One day, Whitney embarrasses herself at her new friends’ party. She doesn’t know how to act in this environment. Riding home recklessly, she hits her head and gets knocked out. Bob goes to a nearby farm and gets Dusty, who is managing the stable. Dusty has been in the background the whole time. He brings Whitney home and slowly but surely the family reconciles. Finally, Whitney learns what true love is – giving, not taking. The Greening Of Whitney Brown is aimed specifically at a pre-teenage market. It’s beautifully produced with a terrific cast and good direction. The music is delightful

According to the authors, this book is more about why people should invest in the relationship than how. However, as the authors share their pearls of wisdom, they reveal much about the how in addition to the why. This book is packaged in two parts and features the views of a mother-in-law and her daughters-in-law. Easy to manage chapters pull together Scriptural principles, personal experiences, and practical wisdom. Smaller sections, with the headings ‘Consider a daughter / mother-in-law’s point of view’ and ‘Be the mother-in-law you wish you had / Be the daughterin-law you want to have,’ add practical suggestions to strengthen that relationship. Whether you are a daughter-inlaw or mother-in-law waiting for that special day, this book provides valuable insights for fostering loving relationships with your daughter / mother-in-law and, hence, your son or husband.

With a guest list including Jennifer Aniston, Michael Douglas, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, the ritzy reputation’s not surprising. What’s surprising is how affordable Aspen can be. This winter answer the call of the powder and take a family trip to a place that’s much more than celebrity skiing. Tucked away in Colorado’s Elk Mountain Range, Aspen feels blissfully remote. It’s so easy to get to, however, the relaxation can begin before you’ve arrived. The Aspen/Pitkin County Airport is minutes from the town centre, and with connecting flights from Denver International Airport, flying is a breeze. Getting around is just as simple, thanks to free buses and inexpensive shuttles to the ski hills. In Aspen for the 11th consecutive year, the world’s premier winter action sports event hosts the world’s athletes on Jan. 26-29. Stake out a place to watch snowmobile freestyle, ski slopestyle, and more. Of course, you don’t need to stick to the slopes to have fun in Aspen. Shoot off on a snowmobile to the lake at the base of Maroon Bells — the most photographed mountains in North America. Don’t forget your own camera for some stunning shots to add to the album — or post on Facebook. Try snowshoeing or cross-country skiing, no lift passes required. The acres of backcountry are often called Aspen’s fifth hill by those who favour the longer skis — it’s North America’s largest groomed trail system. With an indoor pool, NHL-sized arena, rockclimbing wall, and more, there’s something for everyone. After you’ve worked up an appetite, head to Grateful Deli — winner of 2010 Local’s Choice Award for Best Cheap Eats and Best Sandwich Shop. Grab $8 subs and panninis so huge they’re more than enough for two. Don’t forget their famous Cosmic Charlie — the ultimate peanut butter s’more, and the best $1 you’ll spend all day. Even shopping can work with your budget. The second-hand stores are stuffed with incredible finds. There’s second-hand luxury aplenty at The Little Bird, and after shopping at Aspen Denim Exchange no one will know how little you paid for those designer jeans. Just because the hills close for the day doesn’t mean your fun has to stop. Wind up the day with storytelling by the campfire, and free hot chocolate and marshmallows to warm you up. At the end of the day, don’t compromise on charm and character, and still sleep for around $100 a night. Check online for the latest deals — one of them will probably be Mountain House Lodge. Only a few
blocks from downtown, the bedand-breakfast combines the modern amenities, including free Wi-Fi, with a cozy mountain atmosphere.
