nly two NFL players can say they haven’t missed a single game since 1998. Ronde Barber, Tampa Bay’s starting free safety, is one of them. The 37-year-old has played in 240 straight professional contests over 15 seasons – impressive, considering the average NFL career lasts less than seven. But this story isn’t about Barber. Rather, it’s about the player Barber calls “way more impressive than me.” That man would be London Fletcher, the starting inside linebacker for the Washington Redskins and (along with Barber) record-holder for the longest current streak of consecutive games played.

“I don’t know how he’s doing it,” Barber told The Redskins Journal. “I’ve taken some hits in my day, but not nearly the type of pounding that he has over his career; [I have] so much respect for him.” Fletcher, exactly six weeks younger than Barber, claims stats reeking of longevity: a league-leading 1,244 tackles from 20002009, one of the NFL’s “Top 100 Players” and a member of the elite 20/20 Club (20 sacks and 20 interceptions over one’s career). Not bad for an undrafted free agent from an unheralded Division III college. “I don’t want to say I take a lot of pride in it,” Fletcher told The Plain Dealer. “I just try to do

everything I can to be out there on Sundays and help my team win a ball game. I have been blessed to be able to do it for so long.” So long, in fact, that when the 5-foot-10, 242-pound Fletcher entered his rookie season, the Redskins’ star quarterback Robert Griffin III was in second grade. But no matter. Teammates say the Cleveland, Ohio-native’s age disappears once he starts tackling. Fellow LB D’Qwell Jackson calls Fletcher “the most underrated linebacker,” while halfback Trent Richardson says he is “still moving good. He’s still getting by like he is 23 or 24.” continued on page 2

game that God has blessed me to play, I don’t take any day for granted.” Fletcher, the product of a tough-as-nails East Side Cleveland neighbourhood, doesn’t say that lightly. His teenaged sister Kecia was brutally raped and murdered when London was 11, followed quickly by their mother Linda’s resulting drug addiction. Fletcher carried his father’s first name but rarely saw him. At 19, however, Fletcher’s empty eyes saw a shotgun pointed his way during a street fight. Strangely, he wasn’t concerned. “At that point in my life, I didn’t care if he pulled the trigger or not,” he said. “I wasn’t of the mentality to run. So I just stood there.” No gunshots ripped through Fletcher’s body that night. Instead, as the years passed, he shaped his muscular frame into a bullet itself, playing aggressively every second on-field. It worked, temporarily. In 2004, Fletcher was wealthy and playing the game he loved. But his heart was just as hollow and full of anger as his East Side days. “(I) didn’t really feel fulfilled inside,” the three-time Pro Bowler told The 700 Club. “I knew there was something missing in my life and I felt

. . Actually, his numbers say Fletcher is moving better than his early 20s. Though he earned D-III “National Linebacker of the Year” honours at John Carroll University in Ohio, even setting tackling records, he went undrafted in 1998. The St. Louis Rams offered him and only one other free agent opening day roster spots. Fletcher quickly proved his worth, playing in all 16 regularseason games and nabbing the Rams’ “Rookie of the Year” award. At the end of the 1999-2000 season, he was a Super Bowl champion and on his way to his current streak of 195 consecutive starts (20 behind first-place Barber). When St. Louis released Fletcher in 2002, the Buffalo Bills snatched him up. He returned the favour, setting a franchise record of 209 tackles his first year and starting every game during his five seasons in Buffalo. And while the Redskins have long forecasted his eventual retirement – even drafting six inside linebackers since 2007, when Fletcher joined Washington’s roster – that day still isn’t imminent. Four of those six planned replacements, after all, are already gone. But Fletcher, with a contract running through 2013, isn’t infallible. An old ankle injury sometimes flares up, and he occasionally catches a practice from the sidelines, grey sprinkled over his stubble. He won’t be retiring anytime soon, however – the Redskins are NFC East champions for the first time since 1999. Tebow NoTim worries there. Fletcher told Sports Spectrum, “To be in the

really a tug from Christ like, ‘Hey, come to Me. Come to Me.’ ” And so Fletcher did, asking Jesus to forgive his sins and take control of his life at a team chapel in Buffalo. The change was instant. “Once I decided to give my life to Christ, it was what I was searching for – that peace, that rest, that joy,” the defensive co-captain told Sports Spectrum. “I finally found it, and I couldn’t get enough of it.” Today, he still can’t. Fletcher founded London’s Bridge, an organization helping underprivileged kids in four cities, including Cleveland. Accordingly, the NFL honoured him with their latest PULSE award for his community work, while Washington made him their “Walter Peyton Man of the Year” finalist in 2008 and 2009. Most importantly, Fletcher and his wife Charne tell their children Paige, Steele, and Brook about God’s love. No matter when Fletcher’s streak ends, that’s one habit he won’t quit. “I try to play for Him. And let my performance be pleasing to Him,” he said. “He’s been everything to me. You know, really, even before I had my mind on Him … He was protecting me, because He knew that I would be at this point that I am today and surrendered my life to Him.”

George Benson, and singing like Al Jarreau, adding Butler “gave a performance that was just about as good as a pop concert can get.” Although he’s sold over 1.8 million albums, garnered two Grammy nominations, and toured with contemporary jazz greats as Dave Koz, Patti Austin, and Kirk Whalum, music isn’t Butler’s No. 1 focus. “Having a relationship with God was the best thing that I’ve ever done. He is the light to my path. He’s blessed me with this amazing family,” says the 51-yearold father of daughter Jodie. Anton not only introduced Butler to Jesus, but also to his sister, Barenese. The two have been married for 30 years. The gifted musician has come face-to-face with hardship in recent years. He lost his mother and a close friend, and Barenese was diagnosed with cancer. During this time Butler expressed his faith in God through his music, resulting in the recently released Grace And Mercy. “I wanted to make an album to bring back the happiness and joy that we have in Him. Music has been my way to share my struggles and my testimony of what God has done in my life and for my family,” he says. “These are hard times. People are weary … I hope the Grace And Mercy CD gives people faith that God is an awesome God,” he explains. “This album really speaks about optimism, faith, belief, and hope.” Butler relied on his relationship with Jesus Christ during the difficult times, and in the joy since Barenese was pronounced cancer-free. “God is an awesome God. If you trust in Him, He can do so much more than you could ever imagine. I am a testimony of that!” he shares. “When you have a relationship with Jesus, there’s hope, real love, grace, and mercy.” Even in the hard times.

Newsbriefs Rallying For “The Hot Dog Guy” LANSING, MI — After what seemed like a tragedy, Lansing’s “Hot Dog Guy” has something to smile about. On Dec. 11, Clinton Tarver’s world literally came crashing down when a group of union workers tore down a tent at an event where he was hired to serve hot dogs. Tarver’s equipment – and livelihood – were destroyed in the mayhem. After hearing about his plight, a caring local decided to rally for Tarver. Lorilea Zabadal, a Facebook friend of Tarver’s wife Linda, started an online fundraiser to help the hardworking entrepreneur to rebuild his business. In just seven days, over 1,000 generous donors raised more than $33,000, far exceeding Zabadal’s initial target amount of $2,000. Tarver was

overwhelmed with the outpouring of support. He plans to buy a brand-new cart and spread the kindness with the remaining amount. “I have a sick sister, so I’m going to help her out and I’m going to help my church too,” he told Fox News. “Right now, I’m just thanking everyone for the gifts and love they’ve shown me. I’ve forgiven the people who broke all of my stuff.” New hotdog offerings, like the “Lorilea hot dog,” a vegetarian hot dog honouring Zabadal, will be available next spring. Tarver says God was at work in this entire ordeal. “[God’s] showing me that He’s looking out for me after this tragedy. I am excited and Lord knows I’ve wanted to get a new cart. Now I can pay cash.”

Small Town With A Big Heart POSSUM TROT, TX — Everything is big in Texas – even in the tiny town of Possum Trot, people love big. Sixteen years ago, Rev. W.C. Martin of Bennett Chapel Baptist Church encouraged his 200-member congregation to welcome the most neglected foster children into their homes. Twenty-five families heeded the call and over the years, 76 children have been adopted into the town located 257 km northeast of Houston. “It’s not a whole lot we have to offer children right here in Possum Trot,” Martin told NBC News’ Craig Melvin. “But love, joy, peace and happiness – we can offer them that.” It wasn’t an easy task by a long shot. Residents

earn meager incomes logging, working at a chicken-packing plant or at a flooring plant. The town was so poor, even the local food bank closed at one point. “Our financial struggles, they’re devastating,” said Donna, Martin’s wife, who adopted four children. “But you can’t bring these kids into your home and not prepare them for their future.” Despite the hardships, families willingly took the challenge. One foster parent even took on two jobs. With this kind of sacrifice, the kids now thrive in school and in life. Joshua, one of the Martins’ kids, told People magazine, “I don’t know where I’d be [without them].”

A God-Given Calling HAMILTON, ON — Dr. Jean Chamberlain Froese, internationally recognized expert on women’s reproductive health, was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal last November for her extraordinary contribution to improving maternal health in developing countries. Dr. Froese is founder and executive director of Save the Mothers, an organization dedicated to reducing the number of women dying in childbirth. Chamberlain Froese works tirelessly to champion this cause, which she considers a divine calling. “I feel my role is much like the verse in Proverbs [31:8], ‘Speak for those who have no voice, for the rights of all who are destitute.’ ” Chamberlain Froese told InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. “In Canada, one in 4,000 mothers die each year from pregnancy complications, but in Uganda

with about the same population, one in 16 mothers will die [each year].” She lives eight months of the year in Uganda, and four months in Canada teaching at McMaster University and working clinically. It’s not easy, but she finds strength in God. “It’s led me to places I would have never dreamed, and it’s led me to try to make a difference,” she said. “I’ve found God has given strength I didn’t know I had, and opened roads I didn’t know existed.” Through Save the Mothers, Ugandan professionals are being trained to champion maternal health programs in their areas of expertise. As for the award, Chamberlain Froese said, “I’m grateful for any opportunity to draw attention to the injustice of women and children dying from preventable pregnancy-related causes. And I [am] honoured to receive the Diamond Jubilee Medal.”

Globetrotting For God EDMONTON, AB — Anthony “Ant” Atkinson Jr. was one of the Harlem Globetrotters performing at the Expo Centre on Jan. 9. He may not be a household name yet in Canada, but the 5-10 point guard with incredible skills is known for all the right reasons. Ant became famous in his preGlobetrotter days as the catalyst in his college basketball team’s amazing storybook comeback. When Atkinson’s Barton Bulldogs took on the defending champions, Atkinson scored 10 points in the last 45 seconds to win the Bulldogs’ one and only national championship. It was a true underdog success story, and he credits God for his incredible performance. Ant’s skills made him the top prospect of the Harlem

Globetrotters. Now, the North Carolina-native gets to display his skills in a platform that brings a smile to people’s faces. He also started a 12-and-under AAU team in his home town of Wilson, NC where he and his father coach and mentor kids for free. When his autobiography The Edge of Legend was written in 2010, he didn’t want any of the profits because “it was about getting my story out there and letting kids be influenced by something positive because God knows that kids need that nowadays.” Because for Atkinson, it’s not about fame, it’s about God’s purpose for his life. As he tells Sports Spectrum, “If I can touch just one person’s life through my basketball the deed is done.”

MANHATTAN, KS — Kansas State Wildcat’s quarterback Colin Klein has been called everything from Honeybadger to Optimus Klein. But one nickname holds a badge of honour: Tim Tebow of the Midwest. “It’s an honour to be mentioned in the same sentence,” the Heisman-nominee told ESPN of the Tebow comparison. Their similarities are easy to see. Like Tebow, Klein is a strong runner who slips past and outruns defenders to the end zone. And just like the Jets’ famous backup QB, people have noticed Klein’s awkward throws. But despite this perceived flaw, the 6-5, 226 pound senior led his team to multiple incredible wins – reminiscent of Tebow’s Broncos stint. Probably the best QB K-State’s ever had, Klein catapulted the once mediocre

The book entitled Unexpected Christmas Hero was about a mother and her two children who ended up poor and homeless after her husband’s sudden death. The family meets a homeless Vietnam vet who becomes their unlikely hero. Photographer Michael Le was hired to design the book cover. Scouring the streets of Asheville for a homeless person, Le and his wife met Willard Parker who agreed to pose for the photo. This string of victories cemented Klein’s status as the driving force behind a surprising K-State renaissance. Of all the Tebow parallels, one stands out for Klein. “I would say the thing we have most in common is the thing that’s most important to us, and that’s our faith and our relationship with Christ,” Klein told ESPN. Klein said Jesus helps him focus on the right priorities: reaching his full God-given potential, and serving his team and others. “That will leave a longer legacy than any award, even as prestigious as the Heisman.” He’s the one who keeps things in perspective for both men, Heisman or no Heisman.

Viewpoints Taming The Tongue by Andrew Hess

Social media can spread our words like wildfire. most people who know of us, they only know us as that guy obsessed with Ron Paul or that girl obsessed with dieting or the pastor who seems to hate everyone or the cynical college kid or the older guy checking out strange things through Socialcam.” It’s wise to think about how we portray ourselves to the watching world through social media. Your Facebook friends and Twitter/Pinterest followers have a window into your very heart. For good or bad, they make assumptions based on what you share. In Luke 6:45 of the Bible, Jesus taught that our speech flows from our hearts. Bad speech is not primarily a speech problem; it’s a heart problem (like all sin). And if it’s true that through our speech others can see our heart, then through social media they may see to the very depths. It’s remarkable how phenomena like Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest emerge and so quickly become common place in our lives. It’s prudent to think about how we use these tools and how they may be fundamentally changing our lives. Consider the difference between misspeaking in front of a couple friends and posting something on Facebook for hundreds or even thousands of people to see. As DeYoung concludes, “So be careful little fingers what you post. The Internet … sees all and forgives nothing.” Agreed. Let us be mindful of the exponentially increasing power of our words and choose them carefully. How do you determine what is good to share on social media? Andrew Hess is a Research Associate for Family Formation Studies at Focus on the Family in Colorado Springs, CO. He teaches Bible and psychology classes at Colorado Christian University and took his M.Div. from Denver Seminary. When not working, Andrew is usually enjoying scenic Colorado, taking a spontaneous road trip, officiating a friend’s wedding or getting a great deal at a local garage sale. Have you ever said something you wish you could take back? Maybe it was in a moment of frustration or stress. Or maybe it was just an accident, but you heard yourself saying something you quickly lamented. It’s true that the tongue can be a restless evil in our lives, one that is impossible to tame, just as it was described in the Bible’s book of James 3:8. I still cringe thinking back to s Andrew Hess things I’ve said to people I care about over the span of my life. Even as an adult, I still have to be careful with my speech. The lessons of James 3:1-12 are timeless – all people at all times must learn to tame the tongue and see the immense power it has in steering the course of our lives. I believe the power of the tongue for both good and evil is exponentially increasing in our day. Social media can spread our words like wildfire. Pastor and author Kevin DeYoung recently blogged about “The One Indispensable Rule For Using Social Media.” DeYoung contends that the one rule we should all follow is: Assume that everyone, everywhere will read what you write and see what you post. This is good advice. It’s natural to occasionally use social media to rant and rave, or vent frustrations to our Facebook friends. We may even feel consolation when friends affirm us with their comments and Likes. But this may not be a good idea. Is this what we would say to each of our Facebook friends face-to-face? DeYoung explains: “It’s amazing what some people post online. Do we forget that a thousand other folks are reading this intimate declaration of marital affection or this lambasting of all that their family holds dear? I wonder if people realize that what we post is who we are to hundreds or thousands of people. “So no matter what we think we are like in real life, to

Eight Things I Used to Hate About You by Phil Callaway Six months before my wedding day an elderly man tapped me on my shoulder in the post office and offered me some free advice. “Ramona is a lovely girl,” he said. “She deserves a good husband. Marry her before she finds one.” Then he whispered a curious thing: “Do you want a happy marriage?” Of course I did. “When the things that attracted you to her start to drive you apart,” he smiled, licking a stamp, “find a way to reverse the process.” I have been thinking about his advice for 25 years now, and it’s beginning to make sense. You see, when Ramona and I were dating I loved the way she took life slowly. She taught me to stop and taste the strawberries. But just three months after our honeymoon, as I waited in the car for her, resisting the urge to honk the horn, I knew exactly what he meant with his advice. One day, I considered nailing a list of 95 Irritations to the bathroom door, something Martin Luther may have done to his

Though Ramona’s silence caused me grief at first, I’m learning to wait until she’s ready to talk and to remind myself that those who say the most do not always have the most to say. Desperate Like Dodo Birds

ne of my daughter’s favourite cartoon movies when she was younger was Ice Age. She watched it so many times she almost knows the dialogue by heart. I must admit, it is a funny movie. Like all good cartoons, the characters bear a striking resemblance to some people I know, people like you and me. My favourite part is the sequence where the three main characters – Sid the sloth, Diego the sabretoothed cat, and Manny the mammoth, who are on a quest to deliver a baby boy back to his parents – come across a group of Dodo birds hoarding a small pile of melons. Because of the advent of the Ice Age, everyone is hungry and on the lookout for food, so our heroes try to

acquire a melon for themselves. The results are hilarious, but tragic. The Dodo birds immediately go into panic mode, running in all directions trying desperately to hold onto the fruit. Their efforts are fruitless and the birds themselves selfdestruct in the process. There’s a lesson here for you and me. I know you won’t like the analogy, but we are a lot like those Dodo birds. We run around, often in panic mode, trying desperately to hold onto things that can’t help us. Our pile of melons takes the form of all kinds of things – jobs, money, big houses and fast cars, perfect appearances, top

Similar to the Dodo birds, we focus on acquiring and keeping things that are powerless to give us what we need. That small pile of melons couldn’t keep the Dodo birds from starvation. And all the things we run after won’t give us the

Wedgie Tales fulfillment and satisfaction we long for. In fact, much of it will only lead to emptiness and our own self-destruction. Only one thing, or rather, one Person, will give us what we need. Jesus Christ is able and willing. The Bible tells us that He gives us His Holy Spirit, to live inside us, to teach, guide, and comfort. When the Spirit of God is in us, we don’t have to panic about how we are going to survive. Our survival is guaranteed, even when this life ends. The Apostle John recorded the message Jesus gave to His disciples in the Bible: “I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life” ( John 6:47). Jesus gives us that which nourishes and satisfies – forever. Listen to His words again: “Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me ... he who feeds on this bread will live forever” (John 6:57-58). When we feed on Jesus, trusting Him, drawing on His strength, through prayer and reading the Bible, we begin to see the things we strive for as what they really are – just a pile of melons. y son Daniel is the youngest of five kids. That means that he’s suffered a lot of wedgies through the years. But hey, I figure that’ll give him stories he can tell his kids. Some parents tell their children of the hardships of walking to and from school in the 12-foot snow – uphill both ways. My Daniel? He’ll be able to tell his children that he spent several years suffering through underwear with no waistbands. My friend Janet said he could call his life story, “Wedgie Tales.” It’s a good reminder that tough situations, like waistbands, will come and go. The real question is, how will we respond? And will we allow those difficulties to defeat us or will we allow them to strengthen us? Will we rest God’s presence, seeing life from His eternal perspective? Or will we try to squirm out of those difficulties and make it through

them on our own, pouting, whining, sputtering, and blaming all along the way? Stories of grace under pressure are so much more fun to pass on to our children. Those stories will answer a lot of their questions about life and how we should live it. It will even set a pattern for them to follow. Now there’s a legacy. In the Bible’s 2 Corinthians 4:16-17 we read, “Therefore we do not become discouraged, utterly spiritless, exhausted, and wearied out through fear. Though the outer man is progressively decaying and wasting away, yet our inner self is being progressively renewed day after day. “For our light, momentary

Tough situations, like waistbands, will come and go. affliction, this slight distress of the passing hour, is ever more and more abundantly preparing and producing and achieving for us an everlasting weight of glory, beyond all measure, excessively surpassing all comparisons and all calculations, a vast and transcendent glory and blessedness never to cease!” Waistbands? Here today, wedgied away tomorrow. But we’re to be focused on the things

that are eternal – the unseen blessedness that never ceases. Verse 18 of the passage says, “Since we consider and look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen; for the things that are visible are temporal, brief, and fleeting, but the things that are invisible are deathless and everlasting.” I’m fighting the urge to mention the fact that it says that the visible things are “brief.” Yeah, I’m totally leaving that one alone. But those invisible things? According to this passage, they’re everlasting. Maybe not ever-elastic. But everlasting and completely deathless, for sure. And ultimately, if we have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, then in our own “everlasting,” every question in this life, every why we’ve ever asked, will be answered in the most satisfying, resounding answer. Pondering our everlasting, deathless future as Christians gives us an entirely different perspective on the momentary suffering. Even though here in the present there will still be questions left temporarily hanging. Incidentally, among those unanswered questions, there’s still this one: Would you call a person with no waistbands left a “Wedgeetarian”? Surviving In An Angry World by Dr. Charles F. Stanley

I

n 1894, a baseball game literally became heated when a Baltimore Oriole player started a fight with the Boston Red Sox third baseman. The conflict escalated as both teams rushed onto the field and fans poured out of the stands. During this frenzy someone started a fire, and the ballpark, along with 170 other buildings, burned to the ground – all because of one man’s rage. Although this example is s Dr. Charles F. Stanley extreme, it’s a fitting picture of the destruction that can accompany anger. Anger is a big deal in God’s eyes – it wrecks lives, destroys marriages, wounds children, and separates friends.

Consequences Of Anger It distorts character. Unresolved anger reaches our innermost being with corrupting poison. A judgmental spirit leads to belittling others. Hostility makes us easily offended. Imagined insults shape responses out of proportion to the situation. It affects the body. God didn’t design our bodies to live with sustained anger. It wreaks havoc internally and can even result in deadly ailments like heart attacks. It damages relationships. Our anger is never just our own issue; it affects others, and tragically, those closest to us are the ones who suffer most. It’s contagious. The Bible tells us, “Do not associate with a man given to anger; or go with a hot-tempered man, or you will learn his ways and find a snare for yourself” (Proverbs 22:24-25). Our resentment affects others, but is especially contagious to children. They develop similar attitudes as they learn from us. It erects a barrier between us and God. Anger’s most tragic consequence is broken fellowship with God. You cannot be right with Him if you’re unforgiving toward others (Matthew 5:21-24). We grieve His heart when we choose our hostility instead of Him. It hinders God’s work. God has great plans for our lives, but when we hold onto animosity, we can’t hear His voice. As a result, we miss the blessings of walking in His will.

Handling Anger

Guidelines For Handling Anger

We all face situations unleashing this powerful emotion. The question is not if we will feel anger but whether we will handle it in a way honouring God. Occasionally our indignation is a fitting response to injustice or mistreatment of others, but usually, is rooted in self-interest. Perhaps someone insulted or rejected us. Maybe the reason for our agitation is a frustrating situation. Most turmoil is the result of not getting our way. When people don’t cooperate with our plans or don’t appreciate us, or when events don’t work out our way, we feel irritation.

Confess your feelings. When antagonistic emotions engulf us, we must acknowledge them to God. While bottling fury is self-destructive, expressing it rashly can harm others. We need a safe way to vent negative feelings. The only one who can handle such openness is God. He already knows our thoughts and emotions. Tell Him anything – pour out your hostility and resentment. Then ask Him to help you respond in a way glorifying Him and benefiting both you and others. Identify the source. This sounds simple, but pinning down the root of anger can be difficult. We’re masters of transferring our animosity from the original source to whoever is within range. It can be yelling at the kids because of frustration at work, or as complex as destructive behaviour stemming from an abusive childhood. Deal with it quickly. The Bible’s Ephesians 4:26-27 says not to let the sun go down on anger. Otherwise, our thinking can be twisted with lies, stirring up desire for revenge. The offense itself can affect our timetable. A minor grievance can be forgiven, but a tragedy, such as the death of a child by a drunken driver, will take longer. In difficult situations, we can begin by acknowledging to God the need to deal with our emotions and trust He will help us. Don’t sin in anger. Anger itself isn’t a sin. Our ability to feel anger is part of being made in God’s image. However, because of our tendency to sin, this capability is easily misused. There are two ways we sin in anger – hanging on or lashing out (Ephesians 4:26, 29). We need to make understanding our goal rather than self-defense. If our focus is on getting our way, a godly response is unlikely. Ask God to help you understand the motivations of others. Forgive. Unless we release those who have wronged us, bitterness will take root in our lives. Only by giving up our right for revenge can we begin to experience the freedom God desires for us. As we surrender hostile feelings, God’s presence will restore and heal our broken hearts.

Good And Bad Anger Anger comes in two forms – righteous and unrighteous. To understand its expression, let’s examine Jesus’ responses in the Bible. He grieved at the religious leaders’ hardened hearts (Mark 3:1-5) and rebuked them for leading people astray (Matthew 23:13-33).

We don’t have to let these feelings control us. When merchants and money-changers turned the temple into a “robbers’ den,” He expressed passion by driving them out (Matthew 21:12-13; John 2:15). Jesus was motivated by passion for God and compassion for people. Though He suffered personal injustice throughout His earthly life, He never responded with hostility. Even in the most unfair situation – His suffering and death on a cross – Jesus responded, “Father, forgive them” (Luke 23:34). The Lord’s example shows righteous indignation: a passionate response to either a wrong committed against someone or an insult toward God. Unrighteous anger, on the other hand, is self-centred. Rage is an uncontrolled explosion, whereas resentment is internalized and simmers like a crock pot – when someone refuses to acknowledge such bitterness, this “low boil” spews venom into the heart. Although we are prone to these expressions, we don’t have to give in. God can provide His strength to control our responses so we don’t have to let them control us.

Taking a car in for repairs can be distressing for people who aren’t car experts, but even more so if they can’t afford the cost. But last September, a solution was created through Good News Auto, a “mechanic shop with a twist.” “We set out to be a business that doesn’t aim to make a profit,” says co-owner Chris Ferland. The shop has its roots in a 10-year church-

After repairing about 400 vehicles for free, they realized something needed to change. “People don’t always value services when they’re free and our mechanic was going into debt,” says Ferland. “So we looked for a sustainable solution which was Good News Auto and started JumpStart.” JumpStart subsidizes Good News vehicle repairs using a Auto’s sliding scale based on Kimberly an individual’s income and Chris and circumstance. UnSHACKLING Potential by Melissa Yue Wallace

At the Edmonton Institution for Women, visitors might expect to see tall fences, partitions, and convicts milling about in orange jumpsuits. What they wouldn’t expect to see is incarcerated women participating in a course titled “Powder Puff Mechanics” or listening to the wisdom of a grandmother teaching the basics of sewing. Showing Christ’s love to women in prison is what the G.A.L. (Go And Live) program is about. G.A.L. officially started in June 2010 by Edmonton resident Nancy Shave, who has worked with people with disabilities, addictions, and mental health issues. “I was able to see firsthand how life happens for people

in a ‘not great’ way through choices and circumstances,” says Shave. “Life itself and previous employment and volunteer work prepared me to start this program.” Some of the courses offered include nutrition, finance, public speaking, computers, and basic mechanics. A maximum of 10 inmates can sign up for each course taught by volunteer instructors every Thursday for an eight-week term. After three terms, a graduation ceremony is held for women with high attendance. Jim Ewing, who facilitates the public speaking course with another instructor, admitted having some concerns when initially presented with the idea of teaching in prison. “I wasn’t shaking in my boots, but I didn’t know what

it was going to be like,” says Ewing. “But then we found that the women were not different from any other individuals who were genuinely interested in improving their skills.” During the one-hour sessions, Ewing noticed a change in the women, particularly when they practised speaking with each other. “A lot of nervousness was diminished and they had more direction and confidence,” says Ewing, who was overjoyed to hear three of his students give speeches at the 2012 graduation ceremony.

“Unless you know these women’s stories, you may be like society and say, ‘Yup! Lock up these women and throw away the key!’ ” The volunteers’ caring attitude is not lost on the students, including Dawn, a recent grad. In her speech, she said what impacted her were the volunteers, “those that spend their Thursday evenings with women who most of society don’t think deserve a second chance.” Her closing comment says it all: “To the volunteers, thank you for seeing us for the people we are.” The G.A.L. program is a dream come true for Shave. In 2004, she had a vision that she was giving a speech on selfesteem at a women’s prison. She began formulating the plans for a program, but found every door was closed “rock solid.”

Warden Andrea Markowski and G.A.L. program founder Nancy Shave stand in front of Edmonton Institution for Women. The program teaches inmates tangible life skills through courses like finance, public speaking, computers, and basic mechanics. The next term starts on Jan. 17.

Shave saw she needed more experience. “I had to be exposed to that specific demographic and deepen my personal relationship with Jesus,” says Shave, who began volunteering at EIFW in 2008. “In 2010, every single door that was closed … didn’t just creak open, it flew open!” Shave’s desire to serve marginalized women grew out of her deep faith and love for Jesus Christ, which she didn’t understand in her youth. Though she grew up in a Christian family, she suffered from low selfesteem, which often led to bad choices. “I could have written the book on loneliness as a child,” she says. “Even though you don’t want to do what the group is doing, you’re going along because you don’t want to be alone and left out. When you fuel those poor choices with alcohol, that is the recipe for disaster and dysfunction.” Her father prayed for her and her siblings – every single night, by name – and eventually she found her way back to God. “God doesn’t interfere with free will, but He doesn’t leave you either,” says Shave. Shave hopes that one day the program, currently sponsored by Christcity Church, will be implemented nationwide, including men’s prisons. “Unless you know some of these women’s stories, you may say, ‘Yup! Lock up these women and throw away the key!’ ” says Shave. “But we are pouring out the love of Jesus Christ on these women and we pray they’ll gain tangible skills, more confidence, and one day seek out God more.” The next term for G.A.L. begins on Jan. 17. Finding Freebies! by Carolyn Tomlin

Everyone likes a bargain! We search for end-of-season items and reduced sale merchandise (like all those after Christmas sales). But what if we could find some of those things for free? Enrich your life by exchanging or trading objects or services you need. What can you do without spending money? Look at the following items that are no-cost or low-cost to you — the consumer.

EAT MORE – PAY LESS

Now a national pastime thanks to shows such as Extreme Couponing, clipping grocery coupons is a way of life for many seniors. Making our money go further and getting more for our dollar makes sense — especially when retired. Look for grocery coupons of “buy one, get one

Go to websites such as save.ca for free grocery and household coupons as you make your weekly list. Check newspapers and magazines for deals you will use. Start a coupon exchange with family, friends, or neighbours. Being good stewards of our money is one way to honour God.

SLEEPING FOR FREE

Sign up with a major hotel or motel chain that offers a free night’s lodging with several paid visits. Do you travel often? If so, stay with the same company when possible. Soon, you’ll have a free night available. Also, patronize those that add a free continental breakfast, guest parking, daily newspapers, and other incentives. Large hotel chains may add free gas to those who support their business. Before leaving home, download free e-books on your Kindle or e-book reader. TIME AFTER TIME

Retirement means time for extra volunteering. Without a day job, our schedule is flexible enough to work during peak hours. Is there a museum hosting an exhibit you would like to visit, but the price is a little out-ofline for your budget? Does your community offer local theatres? Are there sporting events coming to town? Events such as these need local people to serve as volunteers, design programs, make contacts with media before the event, be present on the night to take tickets, and dozens of other things. And don’t overlook a reception for patrons to meet the star cast. This is where you — a volunteer — come in. Occasionally, in trade for some free hours of volunteering, you are given a ticket in exchange for your time. Not only will you reap the benefits of seeing the exhibit or production, you’ll make new friends who share a common interest. Start today to make a list of stuff you can get for free. Ask your friends or family to become involved. Share what you learn with others. Make finding freebies a part of your exciting life!

SUPERMOM “Our children grow very quickly, and we have a short time to make an impact in their lives.”

by Kim Perrone

Calling all supermoms: Are you weary? Ready to ditch the cape? Perhaps burn it? Sometimes “getting everything done” only becomes exhausting because moms are striving for perfection. On top of it, many approach balancing home, work, and self as a solo act. Hey, Mom: Even Lois Lane had Superman.

PROVERBS MOM

Daisy Sutherland (a.k.a. Dr. Mommy) is one smart lady. Her book, Letting Go of Super Mom (Siloam), offers a “get real” approach to motherhood. That approach begins by recalling the ideal wife, mother, homemaker, and business woman spoken of in the Bible’s Proverbs 31. Many folks consider this Biblical supermom a role model, but they often forget one detail: It’s the part where she “assigns her maids their tasks (Proverbs 31:15).” In other words, she delegates and does not do everything herself! Sutherland says a woman in control of her life “decides she cannot do it all. She is firm, loving, and can allow help.” So look to your family as your “tribe,” and insist everyone pitches in and earns their keep.

LIVE YOUR LIFE

Gone are the days of the museum-quality home. “I would rather have a lived-in home,” insists Sutherland, who has five home-schooled children and a chiropractic practice. You need to decide what’s most important. Must the laundry be finished or should you let it mount another day and create a fun memory for your bored child instead? Sutherland writes,

CLEAN UP YOUR STYLE

Of course, there’s a difference between a livedin home and a pig sty. However, delegating chores is only as effective as your helpers. It’s wonderful when a family can play beat the clock or dance through the work. But what do you do with children who drag their heels? Tweak your parenting style. “There is a lack of consistency and boundaries in parenting these days,” Sutherland says. “Parents and children aren’t sitting down to communicate face to face as much anymore.” She advocates using three important concepts to help children understand what is expected of them: communication, consistency, and clarity. Make a point of sitting down as a family to talk about everyone’s roles. Establish – and follow through on – rewards for meeting expectations and consequences for failing to do so. To make your expectations clear, break assigned tasks into smaller demonstrated steps.

ENERGY CRISIS

Weariness slows us down. Save tasks needing brain power for when you are naturally alert. If you’re craving energy, choose powerhouse snacks. Healthier Moms (healthiermoms.com) suggests almonds, hard-boiled eggs, pumpkin seeds, blueberries, dark chocolate, and apricots. Don’t forget to drink lots of water. We always hear six to eight glasses a day, but some studies suggest we might actually need more. Even a little dehydration can make you sleepy. Finally, know the word, “no.” Use it the next time you’re asked to chair another school event.

TOOL TIME

The digital world is part of the reason we’re overwhelmed, and it’s important to spend time unplugged. However, cyberspace offers solutions, too. Wish the whole family could have access to the family calendar, to-do lists, and reminders anywhere, any time? That’s just part of what an amazing free app called Cozi (cozi.com) can do for you. To place kids (or yourself) on a timer for completing tasks, check out online-stopwatch. com for fun stop watches that will have everyone trying to beat the clock. Use them on a smartphone or tablet for mobility. Sutherland’s website, drmommyonline.com is one of Forbes’ 2012 Top 100 Websites for Women. Bookmark this site designed to make various areas of life easier! Actor Michael J. Fox isn’t a mom, but something he once said can apply to motherhood in these busy times: “I am careful not to confuse excellence with perfection. Excellence, I can reach for; perfection is God’s business.”

Wellness by Beth Bence Reinke, MS, RD Chocolate lovers, it’s time to celebrate. A growing body of research suggests chocolate may actually be good for you! The health-promoting stuff in cocoa is flavanols, a type of antioxidant also found in tea, fruits, and vegetables. Studies indicate chocolate may be especially good for heart health. Based on recent research, some of the possible benefits of eating chocolate include lower risk of high blood pressure, decreased risk of stroke, reduced risk of cardiovascular disease including heart attacks, and decreased LDL (bad) cholesterol and increased HDL (good) cholesterol. How does chocolate work to provide these heart-healthy benefits? Experts believe the flavanols may increase the amount of nitric oxide, a normal compound in our bodies that helps dilate blood vessels, improves blood flow, and slows the buildup of cholesterol. Some studies show flavanols may produce anti-clotting and anti-inflammatory effects, too.

COMES FROM COCOA

The International Cocoa Organization reports Canadians consumed about 2.5 kilograms (5.5 pounds) of cocoa per person in 2008-2009. That’s cocoa, not chocolate, so it includes all kinds of chocolate products, from chocolate milk to brownies to chocolate bars. But looking at cocoa consumption, not chocolate consumption, is an important distinction. Cocoa is the plant food that contains the healthful flavanols. Not all confections we call “chocolate” contain a significant amount of cocoa.

NOT ALL CREATED EQUAL

To make chocolate, cocoa beans (also called cacao nibs)

are roasted and processed to create cocoa butter and cocoa powder. Cocoa butter is the high fat component of chocolate, while cocoa powder is the low fat cocoa solids. The three kinds of chocolate – dark, milk, and white – all contain cocoa butter and sugar. Milk chocolate also contains cocoa solids and milk or cream. Dark chocolate has no milk, but contains more cocoa solids than milk chocolate. “White chocolate” is not considered chocolate at all, because it contains no cocoa solids. As a result, white chocolate contains little, if any, antioxidants. Of the trio, dark chocolate is the best choice for health because it boasts more cocoa solids and therefore more flavanols. Cocoa powder itself is a wise choice – loaded with flavanols, yet low in fat, sugar and calories.

TASTY TREAT

Because chocolate contains flavanols, we can eat as many chocolate bars and brownies as we want, right? Definitely not. Unfortunately most chocolate-laden treats include loads of fat, sugar and calories, too. But there are ways to incorporate yummy cocoa products into a healthy eating plan. Choose plain dark chocolate without any creamy, gooey centres. Bars with a higher “percent cacao” on the label usually contain more flavanols, so look for brands with at least 65 percent. Use cocoa in recipes. Buy “natural” cocoa, not Dutch cocoa, which loses some of its antioxidants in processing. Common brands of natural cocoa include Hershey’s, Nestle, and Ghirardelli. For a low fat, yummy treat for cold winter evenings, mix up some homemade cocoa instead of the instant stuff. Add a heaping teaspoon of cocoa powder, a heaping teaspoon of sugar, and a dash of vanilla extract to a cup of milk

Junk Food Health Food? and heat in a saucepan. Stir briskly to break up the cocoa powder, which tends to clump, then enjoy the pairing of real milk and real cocoa. Perfect after an afternoon enjoying the snow! It would be great if we could say exactly how much chocolate to eat for optimal health benefits, but for now there isn’t enough information to make recommendations. Is one or two small dark chocolate squares a day too much for most healthy people? Probably not. Someday there might be recommendations for daily or weekly chocolate consumption. But for now, enjoy the rich, creamy indulgence in moderation. Has chocolate earned its way into the ranks of health foods? It depends. White chocolate? No way. Milk chocolate? Probably not. Dark chocolate and cocoa? Perhaps. A balanced diet with fruits, veggies, lean meats, dairy, and whole grains is still the way to go. But a bit of flavanol-packed dark chocolate makes a great dessert. And that’s sweet news for chocolate lovers everywhere! Beth Bence Reinke, MS, RD, is a registered dietician who writes about food, health, and nutrition. by Bonnie Grove An Edmonton ocularist says an artificial eye is as much a window to the soul as a real one. James Willis, owner of LeGrand Northwest Ocularists Inc., is one of only 30 ocularists in Canada and has, for the past 36 years, offered his services to people from the Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Saskatchewan, and around the world. “The eyes are handmade, custom fitted to each patient, made of plastic,” Willis explains, noting glass hasn’t been used in North America since WWII. “Glass eyes were manufactured in Germany,” Willis says. “During the war, US Army dental technicians started to make artificial eyes out of the same durable plastic used for dental molds.” These military roots resonate with Willis, whose own eyesight led to a disappointment. “I always wanted to be a fighter pilot,” Willis says. “I applied to Royal Roads Military College — a sort of Canadian West Point — for an engineering degree. “I have only a slight vision issue, but near the end of my first year as an officer cadet it was enough to disqualify me from the program.” Devastated, Willis quit the military and returned home to consider his future. In the midst of all this, a family friend offered Willis a job as a contact lens fitter. Willis accepted. Then he learned they also fitted people with artificial eyes. “When I saw the process,” Willis says, “I said, ‘That’s what I want to do.’ ” He began a five-year training apprenticeship, including annual trips to the American Society of Ocularists education conferences where he studied anatomy, physiology, diseases of the eye, psychology, and painting. “We spend about two hours one-on-one with the patient before making the eye,” Willis explains. “We take a mold of the eye socket, a twopart casting of that impression is made in plaster of Paris, then dental plastic is inserted into the mold, and then it’s pressure cooked which hardens the eye into a virtually unbreakable material.” Artificial eyes are hand painted in front of the patient to ensure a perfect match. “The patient is present for the entire process,” Willis says. “We paint the iris, and make the veins using red thread and pencil.” The patient goes home wearing a comfortable, durable artificial eye that is easy to clean and maintain, and will last five to seven years. For Willis, the job is about more than anatomy. “It’s stressful work because it affects how people look — we live in a culture that appearance is everything. I have to be a good listener.” In 1979 Willis’s best friend’s father passed away. Willis had spent the last three months of Chris’s life talking to the man.

We are truly blessed to have him look after our son.” “He’s one of the most cooperative patients,” says Willis, chuckling at the thought of Ben. Willis’s patients become part of his extended family. “We get to know the patients, and their families,” he says. “We celebrate, we cry together. Many say, ‘You’re the only one I can talk to.’ ” Willis thinks he’ll be making eyes for people for at least another 10 years. His brother-in-law is one of his two partners. His daughter works as the office manager. Twice a year, he and his partners close the Edmonton clinic and fly to the Dominican Republic and volunteer at a medical clinic there. “The travel has allowed us to share Jesus everywhere we go,” he says. He is also volunteering at an orphanage, helping kids with math homework and on the basketball court. I’d grown up in a loving, Christian home, but it wasn’t until that funeral that I began to take my faith seriously. “I went home and it was like God said to me, ‘You’ve been going to church all your life, but you don’t know Me.’ ” Since then, Willis’ life has been dedicated to knowing Him through His Son, Jesus Christ. Each appointment with a patient is an opportunity to help people adjust to the loss of an eye. Willis counsels patients and their families on every aspect of adjusting to an artificial eye. “We help them have realistic expectations of what they will look like,” Willis says. “We teach women how to use make up to camouflage the eyelids. We encourage people, give them skills, and restore their appearance so they can get on with life. “Our eyes are a huge part of who we are. The loss of an eye impacts every part of a person’s life.” Janice Anderson’s son, Ben, was born with microphthalmia — a genetic condition occurring in roughly one out of 10,000 births, where the eye does not grow as usual — in his left eye. “He has no vision in that eye,” says Janice. realistic perspective. That knack of pulling our expectations and our reality closer together gives me more energy to continue the discussion. We took a closer look at expectations and reality. Were our expectations unrealistic? Was reality as bad as it seemed? As for reality, Norma helped clarify that our whole relationship had not flooded away. She helped me take some of my own advice: avoid extreme thoughts. Chicken Little, the sky is not falling. As for expectations, we decided some of my expectations about marriage – that we would always be at peace – were just not practical or realistic. No couple can live each day without some disagreements or conflicts. Conflicts are inevitable and can actually be healthy. Even if a couple can’t work things out for a few days, that’s okay. So I had to develop new expectations, ones that were more pragmatic. Here’s what happened to us.

Developing New Expectations

Driving down the highway, we both evaluated our marriage and made a list of things we expected to receive and what we believed would be acceptable for a mutually satisfying relationship. It’s amazing how just agreeing on those marital basics has increased our levels of energy and love for each other. Are you willing to sit down and share your expectations with your spouse? Are you open to listening and re-learning new, more pragmatic expectations for each other? The gap between what we expect and what we get drains our energy. When our experience is close to what we anticipated, we’re more content. That bolsters our ability to love. A New Year’s

17

Resolution You Can Count On!

The countdown is over and a new year begun. That means a fresh start and for many, time to make New Year’s Resolutions. Fitting in fitness, looking up loved ones, making more money, or learning something new – thousands are making decisions to better their lives.

Intentions are good, but success is a whole different story. Some studies suggest only eight percent of resolutions stick past mid-January. Whether it’s shedding the evidence of the second (or third) helping of Christmas dinner or stomping out smoking for good, most old habits return. There is one decision to improve your life that can make a much bigger impact than any others you’ll ever make. It will more than improve your life and even make it possible to spend eternity with God in Heaven. The decision? To begin an incredible personal relationship with the living God. We’re not talking religion here. We’re talking about knowing God on a one-

to-one basis. Sound exciting? It is! But, as with many resolutions, a problem needs addressing. The Bible says everyone has said or done things that are sinful in God’s eyes (Romans 3:23). Sin separates people from a Holy God. Jesus Christ, God’s Son, came to earth to make the way for you to be forgiven by paying the penalty for your sins when He died on a cross – and God raised Him to life again. A decision to ask God to forgive your sins, personally receiving what Jesus did, and committing your life to Him will absolutely lead to the greatest change in your life, now and into eternity. Long after those swanky new sneakers start collecting dust, you’ll be running the race of life with Jesus. As

1 Corinthians 5:17 of the Bible says, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old life has gone, a new life has come!” If you’re ready to be radically transformed from a lost sinner to a redeemed child of God, pray this prayer with all your heart: Dear God, I admit I’ve done and said things that are sinful in Your eyes. Please forgive me! I believe Your Son Jesus Christ died – and rose again – to pay the penalty for my sins. I receive your grace and mercy and accept the Lord Jesus as my Saviour. I give You my life from this day forward. Please help me to live for You and transform me into the likeness of Jesus. In Your Name I pray, Amen

Tourism Jasper 780-852-6236 jasper.travel official dark sky preserve. Be dazzled by shooting stars, northern lights, and constellations that take your breath. It’s not just outdoor fun though — there’s plenty to do in the comfort of heated rooms. The Jasper-Yellowhead Museum And Archives is a must for discovering more about the area. If art or sculpture is more your style, try Mountain Galleries — one of the largest commercial galleries in western Canada. Sure, you can buy all the latest gear and gadgets at top-of-the-line stores. But it’s balanced out by all the unique boutiques, family-owned shops, and quirky souvenir stores — perhaps get your own Jasper the bear? You can also rent any outdoor equipment you need. From a fresh-baked bear claw for breakfast to an elegant dinner for two, Jasper is a foodie’s paradise. Try time-tested recipes at Cassio’s Italian Restaurant or grab a table at the family favourite L&W Restaurant. And the food is only part of the experience of dining. The sights at Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge will take your breath way (but hopefully not your appetite). Time it right, and be there for the Jasper In January Festival, from Jan. 11-27. The town will be filled with live music, fireworks, a chili cook-off, and a street festival you won’t want to miss. Even more of a draw, you can find discounts all over town, including Marmot Basin passes. Even luxurious Fairmont Lodge offers discounted rates during the festival, though Maligne Lodge’s $65 per night may better fit the budget. With so much waiting, how can you put off a trip to Jasper any longer? It’s the perfect time to get out and take a breath of fresh air.

Instead of hibernating with after-Christmas blahs, gather the gang for a timeless trip to the heart of the Rockies. Jasper National Park sets the background for a family vacation you’ll never forget. Instead of a touristy location with manufactured appeal, Jasper’s an authentic destination, where real people live and the wild never left the wilderness. The intimate railway town just happens to be in the middle of rugged mountains. Driving to Jasper is an experience itself. Highway 16 runs through the park and is the main east-west route. Icefields Parkway, one of the world’s most beautiful stretches of highway, runs north-south. Road conditions can be unpredictable — check out amaroadreports.ca for the latest. Prefer someone else behind the wheel? Sundog Tour Company runs transportation between Jasper and the Edmonton International Airport. It’s a premier destination to see wildlife. From woodland caribou to bighorn sheep, keep your eyes peeled and your camera at the ready wherever you are in the Park. After all, in Jasper, you just might get bears in the backyard. Have a pure alpine experience by hitting the slopes for fresh powder and mountain air. Stripped of distractions, it’s skiing as it was meant to be. With three new lifts in the last three years, the runs at Marmot Basin are waiting for you, without the wait. Take your pick of trails ranging from easy to advanced — ideal for all skiers or snowboarders. Those too little for alpine bowls have their own fun at Marmot’s Little Rascal’s Nursery (for kids up to five years) while mom and dad strap on the skis. Just because you’re in the mountains doesn’t

mean all skiing is alpine. Cross country skiing is a great way to explore. Try trails around Medicine Lake to look for animal tracks and low-elevation ice falls. From novice to challenging, there are lots of trails to try. Want to go further? Snowshoeing opens areas even cross country skiers can’t go. Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge offers an area for beginners to get the hang of things. Once you’ve got it, become a modern explorer and go heli-snowshoeing. Take in majestic trails leading to the historic Hargreaves Cabin — where hot chocolate awaits. Make sure to sharpen your skates — what’s more Canadian than taking a spin on a frozen Rocky Mountain Lake? Visit Lake Mildred, Pyramid Lake, or Lac Beauvert for rinks for aspiring hockey greats, figure-skating hopefuls, or those trying to find their balance. It’s one of the country’s oldest national parks, so try out Canada’s oldest form of winter transportation. Venture into the wilderness via dogsled for an experience shared by settlers — and the dogs. In summer, Maligne Canyon overflows with churning water, but in winter transforms into breathtaking ice sculptures. Adventure-seekers can climb world-renowned frozen waterfalls, stretching 30 metres up. If that’s too much, strap on anti-slip cleats and join an ice-walk exploring the canyon. Try a night tour with headlamps illuminating the limestone for something really unique. Keep a cool head and ride onto the Athabasca Glacier with Brewster Ice Explorer Tour to get up close and personal with a giant sheet of ice. Five stars is nothing — they’ve got thousands more. Simple Life, Simple Love by Teresa Lockhart

anyone [else] that works in the business world,” Wells says. “We’re all given the opportunity to make good and bad decisions every day, all the time. It just comes with being alive. “I guess the opportunity to do more bad is prevalent in my line of work. But I know that God’s strength … and His grace are sufficient.” Regardless of the audience, Wells says that he hopes his music reaches anyone and everyone. His shows cater to a wide demographic. “Sometimes I’ll have three generations from the same family at a show,” he says. “I’m always surprised to find out that they all seem to genuinely enjoy it.” Perhaps one of the most autobiographical songs on the album is “Aria,” a love song featuring acoustic guitars and vocals that Wells and his wife wrote for their daughter. Wells admits to being new at this whole “dad” thing. “She is 10 months old and has irrevocably changed my life. I am both grateful for, and terrified of the ramifications of parenthood,” he tells Living Light News. “It is wonderful and scary to be ‘in charge’ of someone else’s life.” In addition to “Aria,” the song “Simple Life” has a special

meaning for Wells. The concept of the song comes from a passage in the Bible referring to what God finds pleasing: “Doing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly.” Those words are the chorus of the song. According to Wells, “when life is complicated, it’s nice to simplify and remember that Scripture. Do what is just, love mercy, and walk humbly.” Right now life seems to be a smooth journey for Wells. He has a new family, new album, and a career that has not consumed his personal life. However, he has seen significant success. As an independent artist he still manages to sell out venues, and his songs have been placed more than 50 times on television shows and movies such as Grey’s Anatomy, American Idol, One Tree Hill, Rescue Me, and My Sister’s Keeper. Though he has had a taste of fortune and fame, Wells keeps his focus on God and

His love. “I guess there is a temptation to think that I’ve got everything under control and that I can accomplish or achieve anything without the help or guidance of God,” Wells says. “But I always come back to the realization that I am nothing without Him. I know that all the success in the world could never equal the joy or the wholeness that Christ brings.”

Wells fell in love with music when he first heard Stevie Wonder’s ‘I Just Called To Say I Love You.’

Living in a world ravaged with strife and turmoil, singer-songwriter Tyrone Wells knows a little optimism goes a long way. His new indie folk album, which hit shelves just a couple of weeks before the year end, offers a positive approach to 2013. Titled This Love, the album contains 12 songs, each written or co-written by Wells. While the album is light on added production, it’s heavy on acoustic guitars and vocals. “I was careful to build the songs around the acoustic and vocal because those are the type of records I like to listen to,” Wells says. In many ways, his fifth studio album is almost autobiographical. The song “All You Gotta Do Is Dream” encourages listeners to slow down their “hurried souls and trust that God is with us.” The song could be a reminder to Wells just as much as it is to others. When he ventured out into the music industry he never planned to be a star or follow someone else’s agenda. “I just try to make the best music I know how and connect with the people that listen to it,” he says. Wells’ success did not happen overnight, but it did happen in God’s timing. His father was a pastor, and as a boy his musical choices centred entirely around Christian music. It wasn’t until he reached junior high that Wells developed his love for music. He fell in love when he first heard Stevie Wonder’s “I Just Called To Say I Love You.” From that moment on he started listening to a variety of genres, especially the storytelling musical style of artists such as Simon & Garfunkel. He knew the folk rock had rubbed off on him and wanted to create the kind of music that had encouraged him. But before Wells could make his music dreams, he had to allow himself time to grow. “For years I played at coffee shops around Southern California. I often

found myself wondering if I would ever grow beyond that. But I’ve come to realize that as I was slogging my own gear and PA system into those little coffee shops, doubting myself, I was ‘becoming.’ “I was growing beyond [playing local venues], and the only way I could grow beyond it was by playing over and over and over again — that’s how we grow. Unless you’re out working at your craft, you are not ‘becoming.’ ” Wells supported himself by selling his self-titled, independent album out of the back of his car as he tried to get a foot through the door of the industry. Come 2012 though, Wells had both feet firmly planted in the business and his album Where We Meet debuted at No. 1 on the iTunes singer-songwriter chart, as well as Top 10 on the overall chart. Wells’ most significant break came when he landed a contract with Universal Republic. He liked what the label had to offer and the people working there. He has since returned to his independent roots and is now able to be more hands-on with his career. Although Wells is a Christian, the music he creates isn’t targeted toward a specific industry. “I write songs about God and for God, but I write about a lot of other stuff too,” he says. Playing to multiple markets allows Wells to express himself as an artist to those with eclectic backgrounds. However, no market is free from challenges. “My reality is probably not much different than the reality of

Living Light News - January/February 2013 ANBERLIN Vital anberlin.com Review by Josh McConnell It’s safe to say that Floridabased alternative rockers Anberlin have achieved longevity of sorts, with their debut nearly a decade old. Originally signed to Tooth & Nail Records, the band moved over to the majors when they signed with Universal Republic in 2007. Since then, the group has been slowly gaining more followers and awareness with each album. Now with the release of their sixth studio album, it’s obvious that Anberlin’s key to success is their consistency. Titled Vital, the 11-track effort continues exactly where the last disc left off – and the one before that, and the one before that. Soaring guitars and vocals alongside the many upbeat tunes make for a solid alternative rock effort that sounds very similar to past albums from the group. There are hints of experimentation however, such as on the album closer “God, Drugs & Sex” where the band gives listeners a soothing epic ballad. Songs like these give a snapshot of potential the band has if they stray from their usual more often. Overall, Vital is exactly what one would expect from Anberlin, which could also be its downfall. Fans looking for more of the same should be pleased.

CAPITAL KINGS Capital Kings capitalkingsmusic.com Review by Josh McConnell Dubstep. Electronica. Hype men. These are three trends that have exploded in recent years within the mainstream music scene, despite having a lengthy life in some form or another on the fringes. Enter Capital Kings, a new duo recently signed to tobyMac’s Gotee Records. Originally travelling on the massive Winter Jam Tour to hype the crowd, the pop-electronica group are stepping it up, releasing their debut. With 10 tracks, the self-titled album puts an emphasis on the electronica aspect to their music. While some have more of a pop melody driving behind them, other songs have an industrial electronica vibe or are simply straight-up dubstep. Even the album’s ballads are directed by an electronic keyboard, but then layered with other elements such as a funky guitar for texture. Overall, Capital Kings’ debut is one that should be enjoyed by many. The songs are catchy, the electronica influences create a fun environment and guest singers (including tobyMac and Britt Nicole) intertwined throughout the disc help keep the listener interested. Though the material, particularly the lyrics, is a little repetitive and simplistic, the album makes up for it in fun. Consider checking out Capital Kings.

JASON CASTRO Only A Mountain jasoncastromusic.com Review by Josh McConnell Coming in seventh place on American Idol is not always a good thing. Even Idol winners and runnerups struggle with creating a lasting career, so when you’re eliminated farther down the

JukeBox list you have a bigger hill to climb. For Jason Castro, it’s been two years since his multiple musical attempts to find something that sticks. Originally releasing an EP on Atlantic Records, Castro moved over to the Christian label Word Records to try to find a better footing and released Who I Am. Now that Castro has had some time to breathe, he is taking a stab at the infamous sophomore release. Titled Only A Mountain, Castro seems to have found his niche in the Christian community. Songs are tamer to match his softer voice, but they still have strong pop melodies behind them. Instruments such as acoustic guitar and piano take the forefront, as do blatant faith-driven lyrics – something the Christian community wanted more of on his debut. Though sometimes a bit predictable and maybe not mountain moving, those looking for music with a heavy dose of faith will be satisfied with Only A Mountain.

LIFEHOUSE Almeria lifehousemusic.com Review by Josh McConnell How does a band stay relevant and survive in the cutthroat environment that is mainstream music? Adaptability and a willingness to change. Both are true for Lifehouse, who have remained on a mainstream label for nearly 13 years. With each new album, the band has evolved and changed their style that pleases old fans while also gaining new fans. On Almeria, Lifehouse’s sixth studio album, the band continues this trend by taking the most significant jump musically yet. Though Jason Wade’s vocals still make this record identifiably Lifehouse, Almeria seems to be influenced by recent trends of bluesy-meets-folksy classic rock. Combining Wade’s raspy vocals, the Hammond organ, and these new genres make for a fantastic fusion as each track is impressive. Songs such as “Gotta Be Tonight” and the brilliant “Right Back Home” (featuring Peter Frampton) are the best examples of this. All the pieces of the puzzle simply fall into place, making it feel like Almeria was the album Lifehouse was meant to record. Without question, Almeria is Lifehouse’s strongest record in recent years. This is one you need to add to your personal library.

OLIVE TREE Our Desert Ways theolivetreemusic.com Review by Kevan Breitinger Texas brothers Ben and Scott Cunningham call their mellow, acoustic guitardriven sound alt-country, and I’m not gonna argue the point. Opener “We Are Beggars” could qualify, I guess, sort of Jimmy Buffet-goes-country-andwent-heavy-on-the-twang. The percolating “Highways to Zion” fits the bill, a different kind of love song celebrating spiritual beauty – very nice. But it’s straight-up country with a heavy back-beat on “Texarkana,” and the brothers somehow manage to bring a country Springsteen to mind with “Sold His Harley,” even

dropping a Jersey reference to seal the deal. They say their self-written songs cover “revelation, romance, beauty, idols, motorcycles, feasts, famine, highways, friends, sin, pride, redemption, steel guitars, work, lack of work, water, faith, doubt, and faith,” and they do it well. Their strength lies in the achingly evocative lyrics of these 10 songs, and their brand of countrified acoustic folk backs up their lyrical prowess. Standouts include the quietly compelling “Along The Moorland Road” and “Sometimes You Stand,” dripping with wisdom. A must-mention is the Dylan-esque “When the Winds Came In.” With its spiritual and political questions, it could have been ripped straight from “Freewheelin,’ ” high praise indeed.

PLUMB Need You Now plumbinfo.com Review by Josh McConnell Born Tiffany Arbuckle, singer-songwriter Plumb seems to know who she is and what God’s direction is for her music. With five albums already under her belt, the singer is unfazed by industry pressure and it shows in her music. Though she is signed to a Christian label, crossover success is not only possible but also probable with Plumb’s newest effort. Titled Need You Now, the new effort from Plumb has a lot going for it. Sonically speaking, the album is richly textured thanks to the multiple instruments and tight production. Songs such as “Invisible,” “I Want You Here” and “Say Your Name” are anthemic and larger-than-life, partly due to the Evanescence-inspired string arrangements and engaging vocals. It isn’t all epic anthems though. Plumb also has a fun side, as demonstrated on both “One Drop” and “Chocolate & Ice Cream,” which give off a poppy, summertime vibe. A softer side is also seen on the album with ballads such as “I Don’t Deserve You” and the somber album closer “At Arm’s Length.” With high artistic merit and production values, Plumb’s Need You Now is an album worthy of checking out.

SANCTUS REAL Run sanctusreal.com Review by Kevan Breitinger Sanctus Real has 16 years of acclaimed music-making under their belts, scoring two Grammy nods and eight Dove nominations, as well as selling over one million digital tracks. But that kind of success doesn’t automatically translate into a smooth path. When their tour bus, containing not just the quintet but several of their children, burst into flames this past year, it only deepened the band’s commitment to their transparent message of hope from the trenches of faith. Their sincerity shows up in the evocative imagery of “Nothing Between” and the nuanced first single, “Promises,” written as lead singer Matt Hammitt and wife Sarah awaited the birth of their son Bowen, diagnosed with a serious heart defect. The emotive “Pray” offers more encouragement, while pop-rock track “We Will Never Give Up” adds driving beats to the same message, as does the pulsating title track. But it’s not all serious; the bouncy “Better Than This” will have you thinking Bruno Mars, and it’s hard to resist the soaring melody line of “That’s Life.” Keepin’ it Real, Sanctus.

RADICAL REDEMPTION by Manny Mill with Jude Skallerup Once in a while you meet someone you simply cannot forget. Occasionally it can happen through a book. Manny Mill is one such person. In Radical Redemption, he and Jude Skallerup tell his life story. Skallerup is a former Wheaton College staff who first met Mill when he came to study there. Mill grew up in Cuba, leading a very exciting life. He speaks fondly of childhood memories where he enjoyed the finer things of life. He also was a mischievous little boy who kept staff at his Catholic school on their toes. Life as a young adult becomes less than ideal when participation in a shady business deal takes Mill down a very different path than he anticipated. Many people impacted Mill’s life and he shares name after name. It seemed a bit tedious initially but as it continues on, readers realize this reflects a passion, enthusiasm, and appreciation for friends. This is the true of a story of a man who believes in people. He openly shares his personal struggles but always with hope and sometimes with humour. Sometimes life presents obstacles that are larger than life. As readers go through Radical Redemption, they will discover Manny Mill lives to inspire and help others and has a wonderful true story to tell. Reviewed by Miriam Leslie
