purposefully in that order. He then throws out one last “F,” however, that shaped not just his toned, ready-for-anything physique, but his spirit and soul, too: failure. In 2010, Froning was a relative unknown at the fourth CrossFit Games. In reality, CrossFit wasn’t too far ahead of him; the functional movement workout craze had only begun in 2000. Its championship, called the

CrossFit Games, made its debut in 2007 with a minimal first-place prize of $500. Yet when the Cookeville, Tenn. native entered his first Games, the purse had risen considerably to $25,000. All that stood between Froning and the cash was a 20-foot rope climb. Sure, he had already powered through three days of physical activity more grueling than his time as a firefighter. Yes, he had worked with CrossFit for just one year and hadn’t ropeclimbed since childhood. And

by Crystal Kupper true to CrossFit form, Froning hadn’t known about or trained beforehand for the event. Still, he finally made it to the top only to fall hard – both physically and mentally. For that inability to shimmy up a rope had cost him the championship. People tell Froning he would have yet another Games trophy if another event had replaced that rope climb. But the 27-year-old disagrees. “The truth is, if not for that rope, I don’t think I would be a three-time champ,” he writes

in his 2013 memoir First: What It Takes to Win. “I am convinced I would not have won another Games. There is something those people don’t know about the rope. Or me. The rope changed my life.” So much so that today, in the CrossFit Mayhem gym Froning owns and runs in Cookeville, climbing ropes dangle in the main workout area, daring anyone to try. Most importantly, there is also a Bible reference painted on the wall: Galatians 6:14, which says, “May I never boast except in the

Born to a Nez Perce mother and a German-Dutch father, she made news in 1989 as the first Native American journalist to report on a national news network. But these accomplishments are just part of a bigger story hidden beneath her camera-ready makeup and confident smile – a story so powerful, it literally changed her life. In her recent book Falling Into Place, Kauffman reveals a childhood of extreme poverty while growing up in Seattle’s housing projects. Born in Idaho as the Hattie Kauffman fourth of seven children, she recounts being raised by alcoholic parents who would often leave her and her siblings on their own. She also described the everHaving climbed the ladder to become a senior present hunger that compelled her to steal bread from correspondent of CBS News, she was enjoying huge her mother’s groceries at age four. success and a stable life. cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” “There is symbolism in the ropes and the verse being together in one place, because one led me to the other,” Froning writes. “The rope represents what I once was most known for; the verse represents what I most want to be known for.” His previous identity, he admits, was “Rich Froning the CrossFitter.” Raised in a close-knit, all-American family, Froning was used to tough, physical work doled out by his parents. He excelled as an infielder for his high school’s baseball team, impressing coach Butch Chaffin with what Chaffin called “the best work ethic in the history of the school.” Despite shoulder surgery, Froning played college ball for a year before transitioning to Tennessee Tech’s exercise science program and a job as a firefighter. A Tech coach introduced him to CrossFit, a strength and conditioning program used by military units and police officers to everyday gym rats and fitness newbies. Before long, Froning was sold, working out with his cousin in first a barn, then a gym.

As he followed CrossFit’s competitors online, the 5-9, 195-pounder soon noticed that the numbers and times he was posting in his workouts weren’t far behind the big guns. On a whim, he entered a regional CrossFit competition and advanced to sectionals. That competition proved to be no trouble, either, and Froning suddenly found himself at nationals in Carson, Calif. The rookie did well, scoring so high in the first eight events that he only needed a few more points to seal the win. But then came the rope, a disappointing second place and the beginning of a soul search. Born into a Christian family, Froning asked Jesus to be his best friend in the sixth grade. As he grew older, however, the passion he felt for physical movement slowly eclipsed any he felt for Christ. So when he found CrossFit, it was easy to build his life around it. Yet he had no answer when the same man who introduced him to CrossFit asked why Froning did what he did. “I realized that if I were to die, people who didn’t know me or knew little about me would remember me only for CrossFit,” he writes. “That was not the legacy I wanted to leave, and I determined to begin correcting that immediately.”

So Froning, along with wife Hillary, dove into Biblereading, prayer and intense self-reflection. Here’s what he determined: his purpose “was to glorify God in everything I do. CrossFit, I concluded, would no longer be about me, but a very public way I could go about glorifying God.” He did just that, inking his right side with the same Galatians 6:14 reference that’s displayed in his gym. Armed with a new attitude, Froning won the Games in 2011, 2012 and 2013 – the first ever to win three straight titles. Along with the wins came $250,000 prizes, sponsorships with Reebok and BSN Supplements and a full-time job of representing CrossFit. He will take aim for a fourth Games championship in July. “To this day,” he says, “I’m still amazed that I work out for a living.” Yet what amazes Froning even more is how holding a rope taught him to truly let go. “As I began to dig deeper into the Bible, I let go of my pride and found my purpose in God,” he writes. “The rope defined me until God’s Word refined me. And what God’s Word has taught me is that the key to truly winning is not to be first. The key to winning is to put God first.”

As Kauffman desperately searched for a safe haven, she thought of her late aunt. “Her words came rushing back,” she says. “And suddenly I remembered the 23rd Psalm.” She took comfort in the psalmist’s words but didn’t expect an encounter with the Good Shepherd Himself. Just days before covering the Oscars, Kauffman sat peacefully in a hotel room with her eyes closed when it happened. “I felt a palpable sensation of a hand touching the top right side of my head, the way a parent might touch a child in tender love,” she wrote. “It was lovely and so real that I opened my eyes to see whose hand it might be. As I did so, the ‘hand’ lifted.” The following day, she felt led to go to a nearby Christian church. As she stepped forward for prayer, she felt the pastor’s hand on the top right side of her head. “The warmth, the pressure, the duration were exactly what I’d felt the day before.” Marvelling at what just happened, she confessed, “God, you are real.” Immediately, an overwhelming sense of awe, happiness and joy filled her heart. The fear was gone. Despite her impending divorce, she finally felt safe. The pieces in Hattie’s life fell into place after surrendering her life to Jesus Christ. The shame of her childhood, and the anger she felt against her parents and her husband were miraculously erased. Happily remarried and retired after 40 years in broadcasting, Kauffman wrote her book to help people going through similar challenges in life. “I’m grateful for the fact that I was able to tell my story and that people are reading it,” she says. “Whatever it is that makes them pick it up and start to read it, in the end the point and the message is, God loved me even when I didn’t love Him and He loves you too. “We can earn a lot of money, we can build a big house, a second house or a third house, or we can have a spouse or a second spouse, but there’s only one way to finally fill that aching hole inside of ourselves,” she says. “It all starts with one simple [prayer] of ‘God help me.’ ”

Newsbriefs Marathoner Competes For Greater Goal ASHLAND, KY – Amy Compston has an ambitious new goal: raise money by competing in eight marathons in eight states in eight months. It’s a special challenge for this mother of four from Kentucky. The marathoner is planning to raise $45,000 for a Christian humanitarian ministry that will benefit residents of the small town of Moyo, Uganda. Running was just a pastime for the 29-year-old nurse, but it all changed after the horrific Boston Marathon bombing. “When we saw on TV where the bombs went off, we were like ‘That’s exactly where we were at,’ ” Compston told the Baptist Courier.

While Compston and her family were miraculously spared from the bombing, the tragedy moved her to use marathons to raise money for those in need, particularly children in Uganda. She also helps hand out Bible tracts at marathons, including 1,200 in last year’s Boston Marathon. After running away from God and getting involved in drugs and alcohol for 14 years, Compston is now running for God. She competed in the Boston Marathon this year to kick off the fundraiser. She says, “We are not doing this for any personal glory but only that our Lord Jesus Christ would be glorified through what we do.”

Hardwick Harbors No Hate LOS ANGELES, CA – After making hurtful racist remarks disparaging African Americans, no one would expect to see Donald Sterling at a predominantly black church service. Yet, that’s exactly where the 80-yearold L.A. Clippers owner was on June 1, listening to an African-American pastor preach about the courage to face tomorrow. It’s a relevant sermon for Sterling who lost ownership of his NBA team and is facing a $2.5 million fine. “I want you to know my friend, we pray for you,” Rev. J. Benjamin Hardwick told Sterling. When CNN’s Anderson Cooper asked what prompted the pastor

to welcome Sterling to his church, Hardwick explained, “I noticed this man carrying a load or burden and my heart went out to him. I had a desire to meet with him and see if I can encourage him, as I would any other soul that I was in contact with.” Hardwick says a common friend introduced him to the embattled Clippers owner. A church member told KNBC-LA that despite Sterling’s remarks, she doesn’t hate him, adding, “I love everybody because Christ loved me.” Hardwick agrees. He told CNN, “As a human being ... sometimes you say things that you really don’t mean ... We say things that we regret at times.”

Helpers To The Homeless WASHINGTON, DC – He was a military veteran adjusting to civilian life, and she was a struggling entrepreneur when they first met while living in a homeless shelter. Yet there was an undeniable connection between Ressurrection and Deven as they bonded over a game of chess. A month later, they moved out of the shelter and became a couple. “I was praying for someone like-minded who loved God and cared about people in the way that I do. It felt like ... God made Ressurrection especially for me,” said Deven Graves. On Aug. 28, 2013 – two years to the date of their first chess game – Ressurrection and Deven tied the knot. They exchanged vows on the steps of the Jefferson Memorial. “I felt nothing but peace and

joy,” Deven told TODAY. com. “It was a blessing.” They even included the homeless community in their celebration. The newlyweds offered sandwiches, hugs and prayers to the homeless people in two nearby parks. Since leaving the shelter, they’ve founded Glory Soldiers Global, a nonprofit that aims to end homelessness, poverty and sexual abuse. Having overcome homelessness themselves, they wanted to offer others a lifeline. “People can feel rejected, or they feel a sense that no one cares or understands,” says Ressurrection. “It’s a wonderful feeling for me to help them see ... compassion. That’s one thing we need more of in this world, compassion.” The couple are celebrating their first wedding anniversary in August.

KHARTOUM, SUDAN – After spending nine months in jail, a Christian Sudanese woman sentenced to death for refusing to renounce her faith is finally free. On June 23, Meriam Ibrahim and her two children – 21-month-old Martin and one-month-old Maya, who was delivered in prison – were reunited with her husband Daniel Wani. A photo published by MailOnline shows the happy family at a safe house in Khartoum surrounded by their legal team shortly after Ibrahim’s release. The 27-year-old doctor was given the death penalty for apostasy (the crime of abandoning one’s religion) and 100 lashes for adultery. Ibrahim

says she was raised a Christian by her Christian mother after her Muslim father abandoned the family. But since Ibrahim’s father was a Muslim, the courts also identified her as a Muslim and didn’t recognize her 2011 wedding to Wani, a Christian, since it’s illegal for a Muslim woman to marry a Christian man. Despite persecution, Ibrahim told her husband, “If they want to execute me, then they should just go ahead and do it because I’m not going to change my faith.” Her case caused an international uproar. Ibrahim’s lawyer told CNN that the Sudan court of appeals found her initial convictions faulty, and decided to overturn the sentence.

SASKATOON, SK – Working at a thrift store, Alisson Klassen is used to finding random items in pockets of donated clothing – whether it’s gum, spare change or mints. But what she found in a jacket donated last month to World Serve Thrift Store was completely unexpected. Sorting through clothes in the back room, Klassen felt something bulging and heavy in a green windbreaker and proceeded to search for the mystery item. “I had looked in the side pockets and there was nothing in there, but I could feel something,” she told The Star Phoenix. She finally discovered a big envelope stashed inside a hidden front pouch. Inside were two smaller envelopes with a substantial amount of cash – $13,000 to be exact. “Each of those envelopes

Born 15 weeks before his due date, Ward was 12 inches long and weighed a pound, 13 ounces. Ward was so frail the doctors said he had a 50/50 chance of being normal. “We definitely prayed and prayed,” dad Benjamin told CNN. A professional photographer and filmmaker, Miller produced a sevenminute video that shows the moment his wife Lyndsey first held their son and other key milestones in Ward’s journey. Summer Reading List by Andrew Hess

We read to learn something. Rule 4: Ask Good Questions Jesus often used questions to teach His followers, telling parables which usually needed additional explanation. Effective teachers stir up inquisitiveness in their students. In a similar way, it’s important to ask good questions of the books we read. I ask every author I read, “What are you helping me understand? What are your best arguments? Why should I agree with you?” By considering questions I want answered, I remember the answers when I come across them. Rules 5: Master the Art of Skimming When I pick up a book for the first time, I usually read the back cover first and then study the table of contents. My goal is to quickly figure out the main idea of the book and the main ways the author will support his/her arguments. I then skim for five to 10 minutes to assess the book’s overarching message. During a skim, I determine chapters I want to pay particular attention to. I gauge how a particular book may or may not accomplish the goal I have for reading it. Another time to skim is after reading a great book. This helps solidify some of the main things you’ve learned. Rule 6: Review and Remember One of the biggest challenges is holding on to what we’ve learned. God knows we are quick to forget. Remembering takes work. I read with highlighter or pen in hand because I’m constantly marking things I want to remember. When I find a book helpful, I often summarize the best points at the end of each chapter. Then I can quickly read those and remember what I’ve learned without having to read the entire book over again. Reading doesn’t have to be the labour it was for many in school. It’s a habit that can add wisdom and understanding to our lives. Most importantly, reading is one of the primary ways we can grow in the Lord. As Jesus taught, “If you abide in My word, you are truly My disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32). All our labours in reading should culminate in the careful reading of God’s Word. Its transforming power is unmatched and should have our greatest attention and effort. Consider ways you’d like to grow, pick up a book, ask good questions and go find your answers.

Phil’s Parenting Tips by Phil Callaway

P

arenting is without a doubt one of the most frustrating, invigourating, heartstopping, fantastically insane activities we will ever find ourselves engaged in. And though it is one of the greatest privileges of life, kids come along with no mute buttons, no guarantees, and they are completely naked. So I trust that these brief parenting tips will help bring a much-needed smile and even make you think. 1. Never loan money to anyone to whom you have given birth. 2. Laugh together. I used to collect and tell clean jokes at the dinner table. Like this one: Why does a chicken coop always have two doors? Because if it had four doors it would be a chicken sedan. 3. No one is dying these days wishing they’d spent more time on eBay. So raise kids with real face time. And in case of fire, exit building before tweeting about it. 4. Every honest parent deals with regret. So remember, God says, “I forgive you” so forgive

s Phil Callaway yourself – unless your standards are higher than God’s. 5. Let your kids catch you being kind, friendly, even goofy with strangers. I bought ice cream and milk at the grocery store and said to the lady at checkout, “I’m lactose intolerant, are these a good choice?” She said, “Seven hours on my feet. I needed that.” 6. A word to you young couples: If a baby comes along, do not panic. Just borrow money from your parents. 7. When your kids turn out great, be a humble parent. The world could use more humble people. There are so few of us left. 8. Let your kids see you laugh today. Kids see our joy and they never quite get over it. I laughed when

I saw a sign at a tire store: “Blow Out Sale.” 9. Husbands beware. Ramona said, “I love you. Take me shopping.” It was a trick. 10. When we got back from shopping I told Ramona, “Honey, I don’t think there’s anything I wouldn’t do for you. Except the dishes.” I’m kidding. Guys! Do the dishes! 11. Remember that whatever is true, honourable, right, pure,

Let your kids see you laugh today. lovely, and of good report – you likely won’t find it on the evening news. This just in: The guy who invented the remote passed away three weeks ago aged 97. It was announced today after his wife found him behind the sofa. 12. I said to my wife, “I am NOT ADHD! I’m just easily distracte—” 13. Never say this in an argument: “If it makes you feel better, I’ll pretend I’m wrong.” 14. A tip to enjoying

family time in the summer: Raise lid BEFORE igniting barbecue. 15. Your children will live if they do not watch movies while you drive. Whether or not you will live is another matter. Go ahead and allow your children to be bored. Brain cells develop this way. 16. Clean the kitchen together. The best way to keep your kids out of hot water is to put some dishes in it. 17. Remember every family faces a crisis. And the only way to face a crisis is together. 18. Let your kids catch you reading the Bible. 19. Eat together. 20. Pray together. Memorize Bible verses together. 21. Model the behaviour you want your kids to embrace. Proverbs 29:7 says, “The righteous who walks in his integrity – blessed are his children after him.” 22. They say love doesn’t last. Neither does deodorant. That’s why we put it on every day. Phil Callaway is a speaker, author, and host of Laugh Again Radio. Check it out at laughagain.org.

When I was young, I thought of reading as a chore (and a bore). I didn’t really enjoy reading until high school when a friend lent me a copy of The Oath by Frank Peretti. Like no book before, I was swept into the story. Something had snapped. I had become a reader. Years later, I still love to read. We read to learn s Andrew Hess something, so I’ve learned to be purposeful and efficient in my reading. These are a few rules I’ve developed to make books teach me well. Rule 1: Cultivate Time and Space for Reading If you intend to grow as a reader, the first thing you must do is cultivate regular time for reading. If you don’t establish a rhythm, you’ll find other things will quickly take up time that could be spent reading. Start with a goal of reading for a half hour or so every day. Know yourself and build a habit that is consistent. Rule 2: Make a Plan Before you head to the library or bookstore, it’s good to consider your reading goals. Do you want to develop a particular skill? Renew your mind in an area of struggle? I once spent a whole year reading everything I could on prayer. Spend some time thinking about your life. Think about classes you’d love to take and things you’d like to master. You don’t have to go to school to become an expert. Rule 3: Be Picky Let this sink in: You do not have to read anything that isn’t helping you reach your goals. And you don’t have to read the whole book, only what is building your understanding. Francis Bacon said, “Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some to be chewed and digested.” If you are reading a book that isn’t helping you the way you hoped it would, move on to something else.

Almost

ell me your story, my friend said. I smiled and warned her that we might be there for a while, but she said she wanted to hear all of it. And I was excited because I love telling it, not because it’s my story but because it is, from beginning to end, God’s story. It becomes obvious to those listening and even more to myself, that God’s hand of protection has been over all of my life. There were so many times when I could have/should have had disastrous things happen – times when I almost died. As my husband has said, “You walked into the fire and right out of it again with hardly a scratch!” Well, the smell of smoke often lingered, but he’s right. I can relate to Shadrach, Meshach

5

Scratching Where It Itches and Abednego. There was that day I should have drowned but was saved, that night I could have been raped and even murdered but was left alone, that time I ingested a poison but it left no effect, the times I trusted strangers who could have been demons but turned out to be angels. Over and over again God protected me. Oh yes, I have had my share of tragedies and trials, but even in those circumstances, God was there. There was the moment when I heard those mind-numbing

You walked into the fire and right out of it again with hardly a scratch! words, “You have cancer,” the days when the chemo treatments were almost too much and others when I almost could not make myself walk through the doors of the clinic where I would lay on a table and allow radiation to burn my body. There was that day I was almost overcome when I realized the child I carried would not be born alive and the day I got the

phone call telling me my father had died. In all of those times it was God’s presence, and above all His love, that kept me sane, kept me going, and kept me in the shelter of His wings. It was Jesus who kept me from going beyond “almost.” I love that old song that says, “The name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous run into it and they are safe.” The words are true. The name Jesus keeps us safe, even in the midst of the fire or in the midst of a raging storm – not always safe from pain, but safe from separation from Him. And that is the only agony we would not survive. These words are also true: “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this allsurpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed but not in despair, persecuted but not abandoned; struck down but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:7-9). That is our testimony, our story as believers in Christ Jesus. When we have Him we will always have that word, “almost.” Marcia Laycock’s latest book, ‘One Smooth Stone,’ is available at www.vinemarc. com or by calling 1-800238-9376.

I

confess I don’t have the greenest thumb on the block. As a matter of fact, I was thinking it might be easier to just give up on all other greenery and grow a poison ivy garden instead. Except that at this point I’d have to start from scratch. Scratch? Get it? Anyway, I decided it would probably be better not do anything that “rash.” That’s because we really do have to be careful what we plant. We will reap what we sow. It’s right there in Galatians 6:7 of the Bible. And according to the verse that follows, not only should we be careful what we plant, we’re told if we choose to live only to please our own sinful selves, we’ll reap a harvest of death and decay. I think I’ve grown that kind of plant before. But when we’re talking about what we’re growing spiritually, we’re talking about an especially

ugly garden. Eternally worse than poison ivy. Don’t even bother with the weed-whacker. Roundup won’t cut it either. Take a look at the passage: “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers” (Galatians 6:7-10). I love how Paul rounds out his point in verse 9. He lets us

We really do have to be careful what we plant. know that the harvest-minded thinking and learning to live to please the Spirit leads to staying energized in doing good things for the Kingdom – to not “give up.” And that leads to a harvest of everlasting blessing. Our gardening time here is short. We need to stay on task. 2 Timothy 4:2-5 charges us to “preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage – with great patience and careful

instruction. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. “Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. “But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.” Instead of catering to the poison-ivy-itchy-ears of those who simply want the easy way, and instead of letting them distract us, we’re called to keep our heads and to steadfastly keep on working in whatever ministry God has called us to. The passages in Galatians 6 and 2 Timothy 4 are the kinds of sound-the-charge verses we can put to memory. They can remind us all along the way to stay tenaciously resolute in our service. It’s then that we can become more and more the kind of Christ followers who don’t just tickle itchy ears, but truly scratch those eternal itches. So, ready to write down those passages? First you’ll need some scratch paper. Rhonda Rhea is a radio personality and conference speaker across North America. She is a wife, mother, and author of several fun and fruitful books. Created To Be Loved by Dr. Charles F. Stanley

T

he news channel flashed a bulletin across the lower portion of the television screen. A Hollywood celebrity was dead. A few days later, reports of a drug overdose emerged. Though the star had family and friends living in her building, the young woman died alone. Her s Dr. Charles F. Stanley life did not have to end this way. Often when Christians hear reports like this, there’s a temptation to become smug: This is what happens to people trapped in sin. If she had known Christ, her life would have turned out differently. The Saviour can certainly transform desperate lives, yet knowing Him does not give us an excuse to be self-righteous. Our life is changed because we were touched by Jesus’ unconditional, everlasting love. Scripture encourages us to remember what we were saved from and challenges us to have a new attitude. In Ephesians 2:1-5, the apostle Paul writes, “You were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world ... But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved).” Were it not for the love of God, we would be left alone to suffer the penalty of our sins. Instead, He makes His amazing grace available to all who draw near to Him. The Greatest Love Of All God does not save us because of anything we do. He saves us because He loves us. In fact, the very reason He created us is so that we could be loved by Him. Most of us can recall times of abundant blessing – when we marveled that almighty God would so lovingly extend His amazing

goodness to us. But what happens when life suddenly turns stormy? An unexpected illness or disappointment might catch us unprepared, causing us to question and doubt. We cry out, “Lord, why was I even born?” At such times, we may feel alone, though we never actually are. All it takes is one prayer – one cry for help – to get the attention of the omnipotent God of the universe. Our Father’s actions are always motivated by one thing: His love. His love is at work. Difficulty prepares us for future blessing, and hardships redirect our thinking so that we are focused solely on Christ. God knew all about you even before He created you – He saw each victory but also knew every failure and heartache. Yet He still chose you to receive His love. His acceptance is based on nothing that you have done or will do; rather, He accepts believers solely on the basis of what His Son did for them at Calvary. Another truth about God is that He desires fellowship with you. He called Abraham “My friend” (Isaiah 41:8), and He wants to say the same about you. He created you to

Love covers all transgressions. experience the fullness of His eternal love each and every day (Jeremiah 31:3). The question is, do you love Him? The Lessons Of Love Many people have the wrong view of the Lord’s love. They believe there is something they can to do earn it. But there isn’t. Others falsely assume that they can lose His love, and this is certainly not true either. Instead of turning to God when problems come, they run and hide. Does sin hurt the heart of God? Absolutely. But it is not stronger than His love or ability to forgive. When we make the wrong choice or yield to temptation, we should immediately turn to Him in prayer. God uses even your worst mistakes to teach you deeper lessons about His love and forgiveness. Satan may try to

persuade you to believe that you have failed. But you do not have to listen to his taunts. Jesus made it clear: Satan is a liar, and there is no truth within him (John 8:44). There is a way to gain freedom from any temptation, and it is through a personal, loving relationship with the Son of the living God. Every now and then, I meet someone who has been hurt so deeply that on the surface, the despair seems unmanageable. But it never is too big for God. He is our greatest source of strength and hope. He has the ability to heal every wound and fully restore what sin has shattered and stripped away. The author of Proverbs writes, “Love covers all transgressions (10:12). God, motivated by His infinite love, is the One who covered Adam and Eve’s sin and nakedness (Genesis 3:21). He purposefully displayed His care without measure, and He still does so today. It is amazing how people go through life wrapped up in three things: me, myself, and I. They never take time to watch for God’s subtle expressions of grace and compassion. They are lonely – caught up in the noise and fast pace of a world that is spinning out of control. And they wonder why they feel empty. Sometimes, what’s necessary is a shift in focus. Consider the story from John 8:3-11, about the woman caught in the act of adultery. She was used by the Pharisees to entrap Jesus. However, the plan quickly collapsed when our Saviour gave a chilling challenge to everyone present: “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her” (v. 7). No stones were thrown that day. Life lived apart from God’s love is empty and meaningless. No matter how gifted, clever or powerful you are, you will continue to fight feelings of shame, loneliness, defeat, and frustration. There is only one solution, and that is to surrender your life to Jesus. When you do, He will give you a profound awareness of His love filling and covering you – not just today but forever. movement to end human trafficking. This year’s fundraiser assisted Edmonton’s homeless. “It’s our first step in becoming more than just an acting company,” says Blackwood, who teaches acting classes and also directs. “It’s great for us to be able to try new things.” While all four women have solo projects, they continue to work together. Sweet Lies, a romantic comedy, opens at the Edmonton Fringe Festival in August.

“It’s such an amazing platform to be able to tell those stories.”

But Fiorentino admits she cannot take on just any project. “God gave me this talent ... and a desire in my heart to perform, and I want to use that for His kingdom. I’m representing Christ, and I want to do that well. That means I don’t work full time in the acting industry.” In spite of any limitations on her career, Fiorentino has been nominated for a Sterling award for Outstanding Fringe Performance for her one-woman show Anatolia Speaks. Blackwood concurs. “Since

Poeima, I’ve become more passionate about creating a show that has a purpose ... a message. If I have something on my heart, through theatre we can write a show that addresses that (topic). I feel that’s how God can use me.” “I do [this] because I love the creation process, and I love the people that I’m doing it with,” Fiorentino adds. “It’s such an amazing platform to be able to tell those stories. I only want to do it if I think God would basically be proud of it.”

Candice Fiorentino and Melissa Blackwood both admit the acting bug bit them as children. After performing throughout school, the two met in Grant MacEwan’s Theatre Arts program and became close friends – along with Brianne Jang and Sara Vickruck. “We did a few projects in classes. We enjoyed working together [and shared] our values and work ethics,” says Fiorentino. Upon graduation in 2008, the four began working on different projects. “I did a show with Ken Brown (a professor) and a few alumni,” explains Fiorentino. “They wanted to do shows, and they just did it. So the ladies and I decided to do a show and tour.” In 2009, the four young women began Poeima Productions – a Greek word meaning “workmanship and masterpiece.” Their first show, Happily Ever After, was presented in 2010 at the Edmonton Fringe Festival. Each actor presented a new look at a beloved fairytale character. The show sold out. In 2011, they discussed how far people go for beauty in The Seminar. “We wanted to persuade the audience to have a full one-hour surgical makeover,” Fiorentino describes. Middleton, A Folk Musical followed

in 2012. It was based on a true story they felt needed to be told. “Acting is ... observing regular life, or people, and becoming better at recreating that on stage,” Blackwood states. “The older you get, the better you get. Because you’re experiencing more of life.” But life became even more interesting for Fiorentino. Blackwood invited her and several others to write and perform a play at a Christian woman’s event. “I didn’t know young people went to church ... I didn’t know that church could be fun,” Fiorentino recalls. When she was asked to serve coffee, she agreed to help for three months. “Six years later, I’m still there! Serving helped me really discover who God is. And what it means to have a relationship (with Jesus Christ), and be involved in church and why it’s important. And what it can do for me as well as help others.” Last year, Poeima began to serve with “Fashion for Freedom,” an opportunity for designers to showcase clothing made from unusual items – such as travel maps or repurposed clothing. Over $7,500 was raised for A21, an international

The team has provided free massages, dessert and coffee, raffle draws, and spiritual support through prayer. And it’s not just single moms who can attend. Any single parent is welcome – dads, grandparents, aunts or uncles. Neighbourhood parents who flocked to the event last May were surprised that the items given away are of such high quality. “They’re much nicer than what’s in secondhand stores,” says Fana. “And they’re not just inexpensive – they’re free.” The amount of items available keeps growing to meet the need. Initially set up in City Life Church’s foyer, the event has grown to encompass the foyer, sanctuary and other rooms of the church. Of course, the best part is seeing how the parents are being blessed. “I am a single mom, who works full time and visited the sale at City Life Church,” says Sarah Tattrie. “Words cannot express the gratitude in my heart and

My Single Parent’s Closet founders Martina Steinhilber and Jana Fane are excited to give away more free clothing to single parent families in Leduc. Their next event is on Aug. 16.

When fictional characters Lucy and her siblings stepped through the wardrobe into Narnia, they literally entered another world. This is the experience My Single Parent’s Closet in Leduc hopes to provide to single parents and their families by providing new and gently used clothing, a meal, and even a massage – all for free! Created a year ago by cofounders Martina Steinhilber and Jana Fane, My Single Parent’s Closet is designed to give single parents a respite from carrying their load all alone, as well as very practical help to meet their dayto-day needs. Having had a single mom for a time growing up, Fana understands all the worries and stress these parents face. “Clothing, toys and accessories are very expensive for kids who are constantly growing,” she says. “This ministry frees up money for sports or other opportunities they wouldn’t have. It’s one less thing the parents have to worry about.” The Closet, which opens every three months, gets donations of brand name clothing in new or almost new condition for newborns up through teens. Initially attended by a handful of parents and kids, their May event

hosted over 150 people. My Single Parent’s Closet also features free childcare so parents can “shop” worry-free. “We open the doors and give each ‘shopper’ an armful of empty shopping bags to fill,” says Steinhilber. “We don’t let them leave until they fill as many bags as they can carry. We want them to feel over-the-moon blessed.” Steinhilber, who suffers physically from the chronic pain of fibromyalgia and emotionally from depression and shyness, has had a difficult time making friends. “When I am serving at My Single Parent’s Closet, I have no pain,” she says. “I feel such joy and love, I have gained so much confidence, and God has given me some amazing friends.” The goal is to give parents who

SeniorScene It’s crucial to know what’s in the food we eat.

G N I O G ORGANIC

by Carolyn R. Tomlin

Today’s senior consumers often hear the words “Organic vs. Traditional” foods – do you know the difference? Organic farming describes a specific method of growing and processing fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products and meat. Organic farming is designed to conserve water, enrich the soil and reduce pollution. As opposed to traditional (or conventional) methods, organic farming doesn’t use synthetic chemicals to fertilize the soil, control weeds or prevent livestock disease. However studies show that in most cases, the same amount of nutrients – including protein, fat, carbohydrates and dietary fibre – are found in organic as well as conventional products.

Price Concerns

Seniors who are concerned about price may find that organic products are usually higher in price than conventional foods. As a consumer, decide first if the quality is worth the cost. When shoppers purchase whole foods, prepare meals at home and avoid processed or packaged foods, they usually save money. For example, an organic beef roast can be used for several meals. First, serve as slices of roast along with vegetables for dinner. Or chop lean slices into a meat pie with a pastry crust and vegetables. For lunch, make a sandwich with beef, fresh spinach and tomatoes on whole wheat bread. And the trimming? Throw into a pot

with brown rice, tomatoes with green chilies and onions, and you’ve got a hearty soup!

How To Grow Your Own

Organizations like the Senior Organic Gardeners (SOG) teach seniors how to grow their own organic gardens. These organizations offer workshops that give seniors hands-on experience in planning, weeding, watering and harvesting their own organic vegetable and herb gardens, which can be a very enjoyable experience. Companies produce seeds for large pots, balcony gardening and small plots. Raised beds provide easy access to seniors with disabilities or those in wheelchairs. For more information search this website: https:// cog.ca/ottawa/our-programs/senior-organicgardeners/

What Is Good Health Worth?

Seniors are concerned with good health. It’s crucial to know what’s in the food we eat. Are the added chemicals good for your body? Chickens and livestock are often fed large quantities of growth hormones, antibiotics and medicines so the animals grow faster, put on weight quicker, and prevent disease. Studies have shown that people who benefit most from organic products are pregnant women, young children and older people with chronic illnesses.

Many seniors are members of an organization or a co-op for organic foods. They buy in bulk and split the produce with friends. Helpful tip: always bring your own box or container as sacks may not be available at a co-op. Look for weekly store specials. Seniors will find stores less crowded during the morning. Major grocery chains offer online coupons. Check magazines and your local paper for in-store sales. For example, if a $2 coupon is available on the purchase of $8 in meat products, it might be valid for organic and regular meat. Use your creativity and try different foods and recipes. Larger cities now have markets that cater to internationals. Experiment with these delicious new varieties. As a senior, can you place a price tag on good health? Consider the quality, taste, cost and nutrition as you decide between organic and conventional counterparts.

Saving Dollars on Organic Foods

Seniors know that one way to purchase organic is to buy from local growers. Check with your Farmers’ Markets for growers who use this method. Another plus: when you purchase local food, you save transportation cost.

According to the Canadian Organic Standards, only products with at least 95 per cent organic content may be labelled “organic” or bear the “organic” logo.

Parenting by Dr. Greg Smalley If I had to pick one thing I regret about my childhood, without hesitation, I would choose not having spent

more time with my grandparents. Although I don’t see my grandparents very often, I do remember that my dad’s mother had a great sense of humour. One of my favourite memories of my grandmother was when she read The Three Little Pigs and then chased us around the house holding her false teeth, screaming “All the better to eat you with!” Since the birth of my daughter Taylor, it has been a privilege to watch her interact with my parents. I remember the first time my mother took Taylor out on a special date. When they returned home, my mother proudly informed me that she had taught Taylor how to blow

“raspberries” with her tongue. Having no idea what that meant, I picked her up only to get about three gallons of saliva sprayed in my face. It’s so special to watch a child’s face when they are with their grandparents. It’s like the excitement kids seem to experience on Christmas morning when they first see the presents under the tree. As a father, I am thrilled that my daughter will have the opportunity to spend time with her grandparents. The best part, however, is watching my parents provide Taylor with a gift that will impact her life forever. An essential aspect of quality grandparenting is realizing that you can provide each grandchild with a very special gift. The gift involves recognizing that the lifestyle you live is much more powerful than what you say. Experts say children learn more from observing what others do, than from what they say. If your desire is to have an impact upon the life of your grandchild, it’s helpful to remember that he cannot hear what you say until he observes what you do! Children always seem to be searching for the right person to pattern their lives after. Unfortunately, in society today it feels like the importance of grandparenting is diminishing.

The lifestyle you live is more powerful than what you say.

Instead of encouraging grandparents to give of themselves, our society promotes movie stars, athletes and musicians as role models for our children. As drug abuse, teen pregnancies, and divorce rates continue to rise, now more than ever grandparents need to reclaim their significant role. In doing so, it’s important to remember that children do not expect a “superhero” – just you with all your encouragement, affirmation and love. I encourage you to become involved in the lives of your grandchildren before all they have left are a few memories. Likewise, as a society, we need to realize the great importance of grandparents. What an honour for any family to have a grandfather who shows his grandson what it means to be a man of integrity, or a grandmother who teaches her granddaughter how to be a godly woman. The best way to become a role model is to imagine the type of man or woman you would like your grandchild to become someday. The next time you see your grandchild, remember that in 50 years, it won’t matter what kind of car you drove, what kind of house you lived in, or how much you had in your bank account. What will live on for generations, however, is a simple but priceless gift – you were important in the life of a child. Article courtesy Dr. Greg Smalley, Smalley Relationship Centre. Wellness

BeatTHEHeat! by Beth Bence Reinke, MS, RD

On a sizzling summer afternoon, the last thing you want to do is turn your kitchen into a sweltering sauna. Keep your cool by using a variety of fresh ingredients and no-sweat cooking methods. Using the microwave, blender and slow cooker, try these tasty ideas for suppers that beat the summertime heat. Crisp salads are perfect for a nutrientdense, low-calorie supper. No cooking required, just some washing and chopping to get the veggies ready. • Toss a mixture of baby spinach, romaine lettuce and arugula with shredded carrots and thinly sliced cucumbers. Add slivered almonds for a little crunch and dried cranberries for sweetness. • A classic tomato and mozzarella cheese salad can be served plain or over a bed of lettuce. Spritz with balsamic vinegar and olive oil. • For a change of pace, make a “lettuce-free” tossed salad. Throw salad fixings in a bowl and drizzle with dressing. To keep it interesting, use varied textures and colours: cherry tomatoes, black olives, snap peas, whole baby beets, plus chunks of cucumber, carrots, celery and bell peppers. Top with sprigs of parsley and cilantro. Sandwiches and wraps make a silverware-free entrée that’s easy to

transport. Serve with raw veggies and dip for a complete meal. • Spread avocado on a sun-dried tomato tortilla and splash with lime juice. Top with black beans, corn, diced chicken and spices and roll it up. • Slather peanut butter on a wholegrain tortilla and cover with thinlysliced strawberries. Fold in one side and roll up the opposite direction. • Top your favourite bread with egg salad, chicken salad or sliced meat and cheese. For a nutrient-dense filling with a nice crunch, add sprouts or spinach leaves. • For a heartier sandwich, let your slow cooker take the heat for you. Allow a pork or beef roast, a few ounces of water and barbecue sauce to cook on low all day. Separate meat with a fork, stir, then pile on buns for pulled pork or beef sandwiches. Cool soups are a refreshing way to keep hydrated while enjoying summer produce. • Gazpacho is a tomato-based soup with chopped veggies and herbs, usually served cold. Find a recipe online and simply combine the ingredients and chill. Gazpacho is delightful served with a dollop of plain yogurt or sour cream. • Another classic cold soup is vichyssoise, made with potatoes,

leeks, onions, cream and chicken stock. Cook the veggies in the microwave, then refrigerate until cooled. Add the cream and stock, then pulse the soup in the blender until smooth. • For sweet smoothness in a bowl, use your blender to whip up a chilled fruit soup recipe using berries or melons. Try either of these potato dishes as a side dish to complement grilled fish or chicken. • Microwave a baked potato until it’s to the desired softness. Blend plain Greek yogurt with your favourite salsa and pour over the split potato. Top with a tablespoon or two of crumbled bacon for extra pizzazz. • Cook sweet potatoes in the microwave, then refrigerate until cool. Cut into cubes and combine with apple and pineapple chunks. Drizzle with plain Greek yogurt swirled with cinnamon and honey. For a party-like supper, use several appetizers to create a meal. • Sprinkle a whole grain tortilla with shredded cheese, then top with diced veggies like tomatoes, onions, bell peppers and chopped fresh basil. Microwave until cheese melts. Cut into pizza-shaped wedges and serve with a dollop of plain yogurt. • Pair corn chips with a homemade hummus created in the blender.

• Combine chick peas, garlic and olive oil and blend until creamy. Create a fruit and cheese platter, using grapes, strawberries, watermelon balls and chunks of hard cheeses. Add a dish of mixed nuts for crunch and a dash of heart-healthy fats.

Keep your cool with these no-sweat,

summertime suppers.

DECONSTRUCTED

by Elisabeth Handley

Host of three nationally-televised TV shows, rock star, business owner, father of four. You might say Paul Lafrance doesn’t have time to play around, and yet, that’s exactly what he’s been doing for 15 years, simultaneously becoming one of the most famous contractors in the country. “I’ve tried to avoid adulthood at all cost,” Lafrance says. “I’d say I’m 11 years old on my most mature days. It’s much more fun!” Lafrance is the host of HGTV’s Decked Out, Disaster Decks, and Deck Wars as well as one of the judges on Canada’s Handyman Challenge, and moonlights as the head designer at Paul Lafrance Design. Since 1997, he’s been designing and installing everything from groundbreaking backyard retreats, unique interior transformations, and commercial outdoor spaces to custom built homes. And, oh yes, he’s been lead singer for the Christian rock band Found in the Fury for over a decade, and he has a book coming out later this year, Backyard Revolution. The book is a proclamation of the driving philosophy behind all Lafrance’s construction work: creating space for people to catch their breath, think, calm their spirit enough to enjoy God’s creation and allow Him to speak to them. “All my decks are designed so you can see the outdoor space from inside the house to draw you outdoors,” he says. “I try to create a Narnian wardrobe people can walk through to a different world where they can slow down and breathe.” With all Lafrance has going on in his life, he seems the least likely to follow his own

offered his own TV show. Decked Out was born and the quirky, rock star contractor shot to nearly instant stardom. Suddenly he was being recognized on the street and rubbing shoulders with celebrities. His past dark night of the soul taught him some invaluable lessons, including really understanding what grace is and how necessary it is for him to live life totally open, vulnerable and real – no games. “In this TV world, people ask me all the time why I’m different and I tell them,” he says. “I’m on God’s journey, not worried about money or other people’s opinions.” Lafrance quotes U2 lead singer Bono, “Religion is what happens when the spirit of God has left the building.” He doesn’t blame people who have been turned off by hypocritical, judgmental people who claim to follow Christ, but says, “Please ignore how we as men and women have misrepresented God. Pursue who the Creator really is and I guarantee that journey will radically transform can walk drobe people ar w everything inside you.” an ni r a Na Radical transformation is world. a different to something Lafrance knows gh ou r th all too well. He asked Jesus ce — Paul Lafran to take all things corruptible out of him, not having any notion how difficult that journey would be. “Halfway in, I thought, ‘Ow! This really hurts.’ ” But continuing to trust God through adversity led to doors opening that never would have otherwise. Surrendering his life to God has cemented his identity in Jesus Christ. This assurance compels him to tell who don’t know God to be certain of two things, “God’s purpose for us is to know we are loved beyond comprehension, and that He desires we live this life unafraid.”

advice. Yet life has taught him to stop and smell the sawdust. “I talk a lot about not being sucked up in the business of life,” he says. “You have to spend time with what’s really important in life, no matter the cost.” At just 40, Lafrance has seemingly lived several full lifetimes. Growing up in a dysfunctional home, he had no interest in school or church. Intrigued by people who are passionate about what they do, he didn’t find that in either arena, so he dropped out of high school and quit church. “I was watching people go through the motions,” he says of his churchgoing days. “Being one way on Sunday, and living very different lives the rest of the week. This is a stereotypical judgment of Christians as hypocrites, but it was deeper than that for me. If I’m going to do anything, I do it 100 per cent.” This wholeheartedness is what ended up bringing him back to God at age 20. At the time, his identity was wrapped up in a girl, and when that relationship broke up he had nothing. “I had no foundation under me,” he says. “The only place to go was back to God.” He says those dark times were like living in a cave. But it was there that God changed him, and enabled him to leave the fear he had struggled with behind. Two years later he married his wife Janna, and quickly had a young family to support. It was a job at a fence and deck building company that led him to his passion. After a few months, with no design training, no schooling and no real idea what he was doing, Lafrance started his own company — a move that could be described as a wonderful disaster. “You can’t make an omelet without breaking a few eggs,” he says. “It’s a wonderful thing not to be afraid to fail in life. Like in music — so many people will write a song and think it sucks and bury it. That’s not failure. The failure is never stepping out and finding the story God has lined up for you.” All that egg-breaking didn’t create a fabulous income, but that quickly changed when Lafrance was literally discovered and

Perfect Love

singer hits high notes for higher calling by Teresa Lockhart Operatic tenor Sean Panikkar once deemed perfection as his ultimate goal, but now his goal is perfect love. Born to Sri Lankan parents, Panikkar and his older brother Rajiv learned the value of excellence and education. Panikkar started violin and piano lessons at an early age and sang in the school choir. He also played trombone in the band. “That exposure to music would eventually change my life in more ways than I could have possibly imagined,” he says. By the time he was a senior, Panikkar planned to apply to the University of Michigan to get an engineering degree. He was ready to do whatever it took to prove himself a worthy applicant. “I wanted to pad my resume for college,” Panikkar says. “I thought a good way to do that was by being an All State singer.” His parents supported his decision, but they didn’t understand how he made it so far as a singer. They thought he was lip syncing in choir concerts because he never practised at home. “I was such a shy kid I wouldn’t sing at home, not even in the shower,” he admits. “I was embarrassed to sing, so to avoid practising at home, I just had a voice lesson every day.” His vocal teacher, Li Ping Liu, a Julliardtrained soprano, provided him with classical training and encouraged him to

send an audition tape to the University of Michigan. Not only did he make it to All State, but the university accepted him as a dual major. One of his music major requirements was to participate in the university choir, a requirement that would unlock a new phase in his life. “On the first day I was like any other freshman guy checking out the girls,” he says. “One really attractive girl, Jane Arvidson, caught my eye. I couldn’t take my eyes off her. She had the most beautiful smile I had ever seen in my life. The thing that struck me was she was

“That exposure to music would eventually change my life.” always happy.” Panikkar finally got up the nerve to talk to her and sent her an e-mail, commenting on her smile. Jane responded by saying she smiled because Jesus loved her. The name brought back familiar memories. Though he was raised by a Hindi mother and a Buddhist father, both of his grandmothers were Christians, and his maternal grandparents lived with his family. “From the time I was little, my grandmother was planting the seeds and

exposing me to the Bible,” he says. Jane’s answer piqued his curiosity, so Panikkar started asking more about Christianity. “We immediately hit it off as friends,” Jane says. “Sean was asking the questions, so I tried my best to give answers. Over time our friendship grew, and he made a personal decision to follow Christ. After that, we started dating. The rest is history.” Jane invited him to her church on Friend’s Day, but Panikkar was nervous about going because he was afraid everyone would stare at “the new guy.” What he discovered was a few people there radiated the same joy Jane had. Panikkar also read a book Jane recommended, Lee Strobel’s The Case for Christ. It appealed to him because he was “a fact-based guy.” However, the words that really spoke to his heart came from a children’s tract from Christmas. “I was sitting in my apartment, and I opened it and just broke down. After all the debates and the different books, this little tract explained how simple it was to accept the free gift of Christ. I knelt down and accepted Christ into my heart.” Pannikar married Jane in July 2005, and they have two children, Maria, 5, and Mark, 2. Jane is the music minister at their church, and Pannikar participates on the worship team when he isn’t touring. Even though he never dreamed of pursing music as a career, doors opened for him. First, he was accepted in San Francisco’s prestigious Merola Opera training program. Then came the

Metropolitan Opera debut, where his performance was aired on PBS and in theatres around the world. “To leave San Francisco and go straight to the top opera house in the world was incredible,” he says. Panikkar then went on to sing the lead role of Gomatz in Mozart’s Zaide in France. Panikkar also appeared on the eighth season of America’s Got Talent as one of three tenors in the group Forte. The culturally diverse trio made fourth place in the competition. Panikkar used the national exposure to radiate the love of Christ. “In opera, I can’t always smile because the character isn’t always happy,” he says, “but if I am going to go on TV I try to let Jesus shine through me the way He shined through my wife.” Forte released their self-titled debut with Columbia Records last November. Most recently Panikkar has been in St. Louis, Mo., performing the lead tenor role of Prince Tamino in Mozart’s The Magic Flute. “None of this would be possible without God,” Panikkar says. “I had always strived for perfection, but that is something that isn’t achievable in singing technique. The famous tenor Luciano Pavarotti was as close to perfection as there was, but even he had moments of imperfection. “What made my life easier was the ability to stop focusing on myself. Every time I open my mouth to sing, I pray that God would be glorified and that I would give my best for His glory, not my ego.”

Living Light News - July/August 2014 ABOUT A MILE About A Mile aboutamile.com Review by Rob McKinney Like several pop/adult contemporary releases, About A Mile’s melodies fit squarely within the Christian radio mold heard from bands like Sidewalk Prophets, Rush of Fools, and Tenth Avenue North. For fans of the aforementioned bands, About A Mile, comprised of brothers Adam, Levi and Luke Klutinoty of Pittsburgh, brings some good news. After all, those bands are successful for a reason. Their songs are memorable, their message is positive. “Satisfied,” the trio’s lead single, about the personal fulfillment found through the sacrifice of Jesus, is the ideal example of a straightforward mid-tempo number that’s both catchy and inspiring. The brothers, whose band name is derived from a study that determined Jesus carried the cross for about a mile, managed to get the recording expertise of Grammy Award winner Howard Benson and Dove Award winning producer and songwriter Ian Eskelin for their self-titled debut. “Who You Say You Are,” “Right Now,” “He Won’t Stop Loving You” and other nine songs on About A Mile deliver a tried and true formula. And that will be the reason many people will buy it. MORIAH PETERS Brave moriahpeters.com Review by Lindsay Williams With a bold sound and a newfound confidence evident with every lyric, Moriah Peters’ sophomore effort definitely lives up to its name – Brave. The 21-year-old fearlessly trades in the soft, light acoustic musings of her debut for fierce guitars, abundant percussion and artful introspection. The 11 songs on Brave serve as a natural reflection of recent changes in Peters’ personal life. She’s toured relentlessly, moved from California to Tennessee, and married the love of her life – For King & Country’s Joel Smallbone. From the minute Brave begins, listeners will instantly realize the timid young songwriter initially introduced to fans has been replaced with a confident young woman. The title track evokes Florence + The Machine – artful, bold and empowering. First single “Carry Me” is an anthemic pop-centric cut that display Peters’ songwriting strength. Stand-outs “To Leave It All Behind” and “Stand Strong” bleed with empowerment and strength, encouraging listeners to cash it all in for the cause of Christ. Her unique take on the now classic “Give Me Jesus” provides a clever and artistic addition as well. Produced by Seth Mosley (Newsboys, Audio Adrenaline) and Peters’ husband, who also co-wrote the majority of the tracks and even contributes guest vocals, Brave will inevitably redefine the direction of Peters’ career. RUSH OF FOOLS Carry Us Now rushoffools.com Review by Josh McConnell Alabama-based Rush of Fools has hopped around from label to label since their debut in 2007. Until recently, the modern worship group has exclusively been on independent labels with major distribution until they signed on with Provident, a subsidiary of

JukeBox Sony, for their fourth studio album. Carry Us Now, their debut with their current label, isn’t a huge jump from Rush of Fools’ past work. The major difference is the production is noticeably sleeker, which may take getting used to for longtime fans. The heart behind the music is still the same, albeit responding to a different season. The songs that make up this release were born from heartache and loss – the band members lost two parents in the past two years – and knowing that Jesus is with them in the midst of it all. “Jesus remains the centrepiece of our band’s existence, and He is the only hero in our story,” Kevin Huguley tells CCM. “It’s mindblowing to recognize that the very hands of Jesus that carried the cross to Calvary are the very hands that carry us now. Through the good and the bad, He sustains. That’s what this music is about.” If you are a worship leader trying to find some new material, then check out Carry Us Now. DAVID DUNN Crystal Clear daviddunnmusic.com Review by Lindsay Williams Listeners may recognize new BEC Recordings artist David Dunn from The Voice. While attending Texas Tech University in pursuit of an engineering degree, Dunn moonlighted as a singersongwriter. However, it wasn’t until he returned from a 13-month mission trip to Africa that David realized music was what he really wanted to pursue full-time. Dunn’s debut EP, Crystal Clear, reveals the singer-songwriter’s penchant for tight pop hooks. His vocals and musical style immediately draw comparisons to Ryan Tedder and OneRepublic. Dunn’s debut single, “Today Is Beautiful,” is a fun, meaningful ode to enjoying everything life has to offer and finding the extraordinary in seemingly insignificant moments. “It Is Well” kicks off the five-track collection, an entirely original song written about being content in all circumstances. “Have Everything” and “Nothing Left” follow suit with bright pop beats, heavy electric guitars, profuse drums and relevant, artistic melodies. Closer, “Waiting for Love,” tugs at the heartstrings as Dunn tells two gut-wrenching stories about people waiting for the hope of Christ – the first, a young cancer patient dreaming of her wedding day; the second, an alcoholic who’s lost everything and is in desperate need of a second chance. In just five songs, this newcomer arrests listeners’ attention with a fresh sound and lyrics that just as quickly capture hearts. Crystal Clear will leave fans eagerly anticipating a full-length project from this promising new artist. DANNY GOKEY Hope In Front Of Me dannygokey.com Review by Lindsay Williams Danny Gokey may be best known for his time on American Idol, but the pop singer and born again Christian should be remembered most for his story. On Hope In Front Of Me, fans will be able to hear just that – Gokey’s personal narrative. Lyrically, Gokey does an excellent job of painting a well-rounded portrait of faith, life and love. In addition to being a gifted vocalist, Gokey also proves he’s a brilliant storyteller on poignant cuts like “Tell Your Heart To Beat Again” and “This Is What It Means”

17

– both tracks vividly detailing life and death, with the latter transparently alluding to the passing of his wife with the line: “I lost the one I loved the most/ Now she’s six feet of earth away.” Musically, Hope In Front Of Me is a mixed bag of sonic sounds. One minute, Gokey’s ready for Top 40, the next he’s squarely in Inspo ballad territory, and still the next his feet are planted firmly in ’80s pop terrain. While Hope In Front Of Me fails to deliver a cohesive musical experience, it certainly reveals the spectrum of Gokey’s genrecrossing vocal abilities. He certainly possesses the vocal talent and surprising songwriting prowess, but he would do well to define his sound next time around. MALI MUSIC Mali Is... malimusicofficial.com Review by Matt Conner Jamaal Pollard deserves a platform of this size. The man behind Mali Music crafted two independent albums before RCA came calling in 2013, and for those in the know, it wasn’t surprising a major label snatched up the 26-year-old artist. If you’re new to Mali Music, picture an R&B/soul/gospel fusion that’s heavy on both style and substance. Mali Is… grabs from the outset on “No Fun Alone” and Pollard’s charisma refuses to let go until the album’s closer, “I Believe.” Echoes of Van Hunt, Dwele, D’Angelo, and Citizen Cope can be found, but it’s not easy to fully encapsulate the dynamism present in this mix. As arresting as the songs are on Mali Is …, the Savannah native expends just as much effort to ensure his lyrics are equally loaded. “I Believe” is a prophetic word that holds out hope for the culture and asks for accountability for the church. “Heavy Love” celebrates the power of redemptive love with a reggae flair. “Make It” blends a stomp-along groove with interspersed hip-hop takes on the afterlife. It will be interesting to see just how high Mali Music soars with major label backing. His talent runs deep as his message. Here’s hoping a broader audiences picks up on both. DAVID CROWDER Neon Steeple crowdermusic.com Review by Josh McConnell For a decade the David Crowder Band was incredibly influential in modern day worship music. So when the band called it quits in 2012 and David Crowder pursued a solo career, the musical transition was questionable. Titled Neon Steeple, Crowder’s debut solo album is a little odd at first. It’s all part of an artistic and thoughtful expression that’s a trademark of this quirky artist. Worship leaders can rejoice that simple worship lyrics are still present. While the words may seem simple at first glance, a closer look reveals a creative double-meaning intentionally built into foot-stomping refrains, such as in the song “I Am”: “I Am/holding on to you/ I Am/ holding on to you/ In the middle of the storm/ I Am holding on/ I Am.” The music is what Crowder refers to as “folktronica,” reminiscent of jam sessions on the porch with some computer music thrown in. There is banjo. And some fiddle. Crowder seems to lean heavily on his southern roots, as more than half the album prominently displays these instruments. There is also a little experimentation, such as on “Left Your Head Weary Sinner” when Crowder emphasizes a military-esque offbeat that seems to follow recent pop trends in the vein of a Ryan Tedder. If you’re looking for a new worship disc, pick up Neon Steeple.

SOMETIMES IT’S THE RIGHT SONG AT THE RIGHT TIME. Safe & Fun for the Whole Family!

Cover to Cover JUST 18 SUMMERS

SATISFIED

WHERE THE WIND LEADS by Vinh Chung

GRAND CENTRAL QUESTION

In this season of graduations and children preparing to leave home for college, Just 18 Summers hits a core with its theme of fleeting time and lost moments with our children. When a child is born, parents have 18 summers with a young life to influence and love and care for them. However, for many parents, time is over before their hearts are ready to let go. This book follows four families at varying stages of parenting. Two families are dealing with children moving away from home, another is about to embark on parenting with the birth of their first child and the fourth family must learn to continue living after the death of their mom. The tragedy of this death touches all four families and links them together in ways that help each other and offer support in unexpected ways. As a parent of young adults, this book reminded me that letting go of my children is a natural process of parenting. “And we can’t help but be absorbed by our children. It’s what we do. But as they grow and leave the nest, we have to realize that our lives can no longer be consumed by them.” It continues to tell us the healthy way to continue living. Just 18 Summers was like sitting amongst friends, gleaning wisdom from those who have lived what I am about to experience.

Many people can feel abundantly blessed one moment, then poor and envious the next. Why is that? Jeff Manion shows that, whether we have little or much, contentment is something to be learned. His Biblically-based guidance offers practical solutions to living a satisfied, content life in a materialistic, consumerdriven world. Referring often to 1 Timothy 6 of the Bible, Manion explains the cultural context of Paul’s words to the church of Ephesus and how they apply to us today. He draws many parallels between the people of Ephesus, Corinth and Laodicea and our modern culture. Manion warns that comparison is the enemy to a satisfied, generous life. He explains the connection between our identity and the way we view our belongings; that basing our identity on our relationship with Jesus Christ frees us to enjoy what we have without the constant pressure for more. He discusses the threats wealth may pose to a person’s faith. Generosity is at the core of the satisfied life. Serving and sharing from our abundance keeps us focused on others rather than becoming self-centred and proud. Manion is an interesting and personable writer who inspires us to live a more contented, generous life regardless of our circumstances.

From rags to riches, back to rags and then on to the “American Dream” is the true story of the Chung family. Grandmother Chung was a Chinese resident who lived in Vietnam. Widowed in 1942, she brought her family out of abject poverty by establishing a family business worth millions. Despite their great wealth, no one in Vinh Chung’s clan was exempted from hard work. It also offered them no protection when the Vietnam War broke out. The family hoarded precious gems and fled the country on a refugee boat. The perilous journey was horrifying, with 250 people jammed inside an unsafe boat. They somehow reached the shore of Malaysia, only to be falsely promised a temporary home at a refugee camp that did not exist. A few timely “coincidences” gave a forsaken people much needed glimmers of hope. Eventually 93 people were rescued by a Mercy Ship operated by World Vision. Vinh, his parents and seven siblings were sponsored and emigrated to the United States. It was back to the rags, but like Grandmother Chung, Vinh and his family accomplished great strides rebuilding their lives in a foreign country. The past trials now motivate them to give back in gratitude. Fascinating, educational and inspirational, this former refugee’s account is well worth the read.

This interesting book utilizes a combination of questions and answers from the three major worldviews to discern truth about every person’s ultimate questions. A former Muslim, Abdu H. Murray studied the major world religions to answer his own nagging questions about life. In his book Grand Central Question, Murray shares what he’s gleaned from this spiritual quest. He begins by addressing the importance of truth and examining every person’s “Grand Central Questions”: 1. Why do we exist?, 2. Is there purpose to human existence?, 3. What accounts for the human condition?, and 4. Is there something better than our present state? Abdu then evaluates the answers to these fundamental questions from the perspectives of secular humanism, Eastern and Western spirituality, and Islam, in relation to that of Christianity. He states that objective and subjective truth must ultimately come together for the individual. Yet at the same time, he presents how Christianity and the Gospel message at the heart of it provide the most reliable and sustainable answers to these ultimate questions of life. If you want to jumpstart your quest in finding the answers to life’s deepest questions, read this book.

U.S. Prisoner Swap With Enemy Nothing Compared To This Some say the young soldier was a deserter. Despite people’s outrage and consternation Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl was swapped for five high-ranking Taliban leaders. What’s with that?, people asked. President Barack Obama felt the U.S. soldier was worth it, even if it meant trading with the enemy. There’s an even more lopsided trade that took place long before this, yet most people don’t even know about it. In fact, you might be very surprised to learn that you were actually part of the trade – the biggest trade in history. God created mankind to have a relationship with Him. Unfortunately, right from the get-go, Adam and Eve messed things up by breaking God’s command. “And the Lord God commanded the man, ‘You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.’ ” You probably know what happened after that. The breaking of that first

command was the beginning of sin. Unfortunately, sin separates man from a holy God. For thousands of years, man traded their prized animals in exchange for God’s forgiveness, sacrificing them on an altar. This needed to be done on a regular basis. Then God made the ultimate, once-and-for-all offer. He did it out of love. Instead of a trade involving animals, He traded His one and only Son. The Bible refers to Jesus Christ as the “sinless, spotless Lamb of God.” He was unlike anyone else. He was fully God and fully man, yet He never sinned once (Hebrews 4:15). The Bible says “by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, [God] condemned sin in the flesh” (Romans 8:3). Jesus came knowing His ultimate purpose was to be traded for man’s sin. “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” states 2 Corinthians 5:21.

Sin is a huge problem – for everybody (Romans 3:23). It holds us captive to it. As the Bible explains, “Everyone who sins is a slave to sin” (John 8:34). We sin when we break God’s commands. Whether it’s coveting, slandering, lusting or killing, sin takes away a person’s freedom and holds them accountable before God. Unlike Sgt. Bergdahl, who may face court martial and possible imprisonment, God offers you a complete pardon. The penalty was paid when Jesus died on the cross and rose again on the third day. He is alive today! He broke the grip of sin upon mankind and offers freedom and eternal life to all who accept His trade. “Those whom the Son sets free is free indeed” (John 8:36). Admit your sins to God and turn from them, accepting that Jesus bore them on your behalf, and He will exchange your imperfections for His righteousness, your sinful nature for His divine nature (1 Peter 1:4), and your rejection for His acceptance

as a child of the living God (John 1:12). It was His life for yours. The trade is on the table; all you need to do is accept it. Are you ready to shake off the shackles of your sin? Pray this prayer from your heart.

Dear God, I confess that I am a sinner. I am sorry for the wrongs I have done! Please free me and help me to walk in Your ways. Thank you for valuing me so much that You sacrificed Your only Son

Jesus Christ in exchange for me. I accept Your trade. Jesus, come and be the Lord of my life. I am ready to live a life of liberty with You. In Your name, Amen

Getaways

by Sarah Chestnutt

SEATTLE

Tired of camping in the driveway and travelling no further than grandma’s? This summer, venture further and visit Seattle, WA, for a vacation perfect for the whole family (you can always bring grandma along)! It’s simple to hop a plane, but it makes a great road trip. Buckle up and make the trip to the thriving harbour metropolis. Where can you find the most attractions from your to-do list? Head over to The Seattle Center.

Legacy of the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair, the 74-acre urban park is home to the Space Needle, Pacific Science Center, Seattle Opera, Seattle Children’s Museum, and more. Be in the area early on Saturdays — Mural Amphitheatre is the place to be. Starting at

dusk (around 9 p.m.), watch free outdoor movies from the sloping lawn. Picnic and make a night of it! Don’t forget a trip up the iconic Space Needle. There’s an observation deck at the 520 foot level with 360° views of the skyline, Puget Sound, and Cascade and Olympic Mountains. You’ve had a bird’s eye view — time for a fish’s. The Seattle Aquarium offers exhibits featuring marine mammals and Pacific coral reef inhabitants. With water on your mind, visit the natural deep-water harbour of Elliott Bay. Prime views are along Alaskan Way, so head that way for great photo ops. Take sightseeing trips or cruise further with Clipper Vacations offering travel to Victoria or Vancouver, B.C.

Microsoft Visitor’s Center in nearby Redmond is a must. Check out the latest innovations and the company’s history — including the first personal computer. Visiting Seattle wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Pike Place Market. Fresh fish and produce, gift stores, vintage clothing shops, international restaurants — it’s a place to get lost in. The real draws? Get your caffeine fix at the original Starbucks. Then with cup in hand, head to Pike Place Fish for the quintessential Market experience. Living up to the hype, watch the fishmongers lob massive fish over the counter as they fill orders. A benefit of being a coastal city? All the fresh seafood you can eat. Pick up the obligatory tacky souvenirs, but head out to Tulalip for Seattle Premium Outlets for the real finds. The incredibly low prices for brand names at 125 outlet stores are definitely worth the trip. There’s so much to do, costs can add up fast. Pick up a CityPass for the “full Seattle experience” while keeping your wallet happy. It gives you savings of 46 per cent at popular attractions. Book hotels through Visit Seattle for the lowest rates and special discount packages at a variety of options, from well-known Best Westerns to waterfront luxury. Grab a spot in the stands for all kinds of pro sports you can’t find at home. Join the crowd in becoming the “12th Man” at a Seattle Seahawks NFL game at Century

Link Field. The passion of the fans carries onto the field like having an extra player in the game — they even set a Guinness World Record for the noise. The Super Bowl champs, led by Christian QB Russell Wilson, are sure to keep you cheering. Preseason starts Aug. 15 — try stubhub. com or vividseats.com for resale tickets if you’re having trouble tracking some down. Seattle Sounders FC call the same field home. The MLS team has several home games this summer — celebrate their 40th anniversary with them. You won’t want to miss tip off at a Seattle Storm game. Tickets for lower bowl seating at one of these WNBA games start at just $19. Maybe the PGA Boeing Classic is more your speed. Watch the golf greats go head-tohead Aug. 22-24 out at Snoqualmie, WA. Take the whole group out to the ball game at Safeco Park! Seattle Mariners have lots of games coming up and you’ll definitely want to see newly-acquired slugger Robinson Cano in action. It’s a perfect summer vacation. Fresh air, fresh fish, and fresh new stories to tell everyone at home.
