court vision, often heralded as among the best in the league. “I picked nets because it’s a way people can make a huge difference right away. We can really save kids’ lives. I’ve seen it now. I’ll never forget it.” The 6-3, 185-pound Curry, son of former NBA star Dell Curry, has had plenty of unforgettable experiences. When he visited Tanzania last August, it was the fulfillment of a promise: he would donate three nets through the organization Nothing But Nets for every three-pointer he

sank the previous season. And there were a lot. A record-breaking 272, to be exact. “I’m putting faces to nets right now,” the Charlotte, N.C. native said. “Like, one whole neighbourhood is covered now here just thanks to Madison Square Garden. The Knicks covered Block nine, Street 11. I hope they know that.” If praise from the league’s biggest names are any indication, chances are good they do. “One of the best shooters the NBA will ever

see,” LeBron James said. “You just hope he misses.” A quick glance at his stats says he usually doesn’t. After being picked seventh overall in 2009, Curry notched his first pro triple-double less than four months after his NBA debut. He recorded an impressive 44 per cent from beyond the arc and scored a then-high 42 points in the last game of his initial season, earning a unanimous selection to the 2010 All-Rookie First Team.

At age 10, she was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer. By age 16, she had survived four brain surgeries. “I was in and out of school all the time,” she says of the numerous doctor’s appointments and trips to St. Jude’s Cancer Research Hospital that were a normal part of her childhood. “ I was different from everyone else.” Despite her health struggles, her outgoing personality shone through. Since then, it’s been more of the same. In 2011, Curry nailed more than 93 per cent of his free throws to become the regular season leader. Then came the 272 treys the following season and a Warriors record for the most threes made in a single game (11). The man dubbed “a human fishing pole” next poured in a career-high 54 points in a 2013 loss to the Knicks. Such lights-out shooting helped nab a playoff spot for Golden State that same year. In typical Curry fashion, his first four playoff games busted another record; he sank 18 treys, more than any other playoff newbie. And all this with persistent ankle problems to boot. Curry’s injuries have become an asterisk – the Warriors finished last season with a disappointing 23-43 record, while their undersized star averaged under 15 points. “You are tested when things are going south for you, but you want to be steadfast in what you believe in,” Curry told Golden State broadcasters. Judging by his underdog history, the 26-year-old has been just that. Not recruited by any big-name university, Curry instead chose nearby Davidson College. He made quick work of his three years there, setting six Wildcat records and two for the NCAA (most three-pointers made by a freshman and most

on by their last rope, stand strong and don’t stop fighting. When all hope is gone, allow God to fight on your behalf ... God specializes in making incomparable beauty out of our hurt, pain, and darkness.” In 2010, Smiling opened her business shortly after graduating from university. When it started doing well, she felt God nudging her to use her life for something with eternal significance. As she sought God’s guidance, Smiling’s eyes were opened to the tragic plight of orphans. As she held a Ugandan orphan in her arms, she learned the child “had a greater likelihood of being sold into the sex slavery than receiving a minimal education. It made me sick to my stomach.” Smiling immediately identified with these children – after all, she was once a child in need. “That’s when I knew I had to commit my life to fighting on behalf of orphaned children – children with nobody to look after them, love on them, hold them, or encourage them.” In October 2012, Smiling and co-founders Brittany Stokes and Christina Yarid launched Project Orphans. The non-profit Christian organization provides family-style homecare that tends to the children’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Project Orphans has built a home in Uganda and is expanding to Guatemala. Smiling, a 2013 Radical Woman Award recipient, says she’s by no means radical or bold. But her faith has taken her on an adventurous journey with Jesus at the helm. “As a Christian, there is one thing that I know is true and it is this: There will come a day when my life on this earth will end. In that moment nothing will matter. No title, no status, no income, no possessions, no riches,” says Smiling. “The only thing that will matter in that moment is my faithfulness to my God and the destiny of the people who my life impacted. With that in mind, I strive to live my life in a way that reflects the love of the God I serve.” loves people like crazy. He asked Jesus into his life in the fifth grade, and since then, as his famous father attests, “[Stephen] understands that everything is given by the Lord and that it can be taken away, too.” Even the ability to do what you love most. “I love to play the game, and I love when good things happen. But when I get home, it’s about my family and just enjoying the blessings in my life without letting [basketball] define my personality or character,” Curry told Decision magazine. Although some Warrior fans wonder whether their injury-addled point guard will be worth his four-year, $44 million contract, he landed his second career triple-double last November and his fourth game with 40-plus points the following month. And in their first round battle against the Clippers, he’s giving it his all. Whether they’re eliminated or move on, Curry’s ultimate goal hasn’t changed. “I know why I play the game, and it’s not to score 30 points a night, but it’s to use the stage I’m on,” he said. “I’ve been put here for a specific purpose: to be a witness and to share my testimony as I go through it.”

overall in a single season). Memorably, he led 10th-seeded Davidson to the Elite Eight in 2008 for the first time since 1969. “... I think God wanted me [there] at Davidson just so this story could unfold the way it [did],” he told Prodigal . It’s an attitude Curry keeps even when the unfolding is brutal. “He’s had a pretty rough [18 months] when it comes to ankle injuries,” his wife Ayesha told Sports Spectrum. “But … nothing ever really gets him down too much. I think a part of that is because he knows how blessed he is, and all of the wonderful things in his life outweigh the things that could be better.” Those wonderful things include his nearly three-year marriage, 22-month-old daughter Riley and 13-year relationship with Jesus Christ. Newsbriefs Goodsnitch Spreads The Good SAN DIEGO, CA – Have you ever received exemplary service from a store and wished you could do more than just say “Thanks”? Now there’s an app for that. Goodsnitch is a mobile app for Apple and Android devices that allows customers to leave a feedback to recognize an outstanding service or employee, while helping businesses gain valuable feedback from customers. While many business review platforms are rife with negative feedback, Goodsnitch offers a system that “celebrates publicly and criticizes privately.” “If your goal is maximum public retribution – we’re not that app,” Robert Pace, the

company’s founder, told The New York Times. “We want the world to be a little bit more positive.” Pace served as chairman of the Salvation Army’s US advisory board and was a Goldman Sachs advisory director for 21 years, working with businesses like Gap, Levi Strauss and Boeing. He funded the San Diego startup and launched it last August, saying that he and his wife could either “spend a lot of money to have our name on a building, or we can have this vision realized.” The app is free, easy to use, and can help make somebody’s day in just 30 seconds. To find out more about the app, visit goodsnitch.com.

Klassen’s Calling WINNIPEG, MB – Olympic speedskater Cindy Klassen is one of 14 Canadians who will be inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in June. Called the “Queen of the Games” by former International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge, Klassen made history by being the first Canadian to win five medals in a single Olympic Games. The threetime Olympian brought home a gold, two silver and two bronze medals at the 2006 Winter Olympics and a bronze medal at the 2002 Olympics in Utah. Former coach Neal Marshall is amazed not just at Klassen’s “killer instinct” on the ice, but for the 34-year-old’s unique

character. “In a world of ever increasing self promotion and false modesty, it has always been equally impressive to me to see Cindy remain genuinely humble, kind and appreciative of everything the sport has given her,” Marshall told The Winnipeg Sun. Klassen’s faith in God has helped her remain grounded. “I’ve won a medal, but that’s nothing compared to the crown I’ll get in heaven,” Klassen told Living Light News. “I just pray that I will skate for God’s glory and to the best of my ability.” The 34-year-old was unavailable for comment when news of her induction came out as she was in Mexico building houses for a humanitarian mission.

Isaiah Inspires ARLINGTON, TX – Isaiah Austin, Baylor Bear’s sophomore big man, has recently announced his decision to enter the NBA draft, scheduled for June 26 in New York. The Arlington Grace Prep grad is a head above the rest, and not just because of his height. The 7-1 centre recently played one of his best seasons with the Bears, averaging 11.2 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game. The 21-year-old’s shooting and shot-blocking abilities – including an impressive 18 points against Oklahoma – helped the Bears reach the NCAA tournament’s Sweet 16. His formidable presence on the hard court hides the Arlington, Tex. native’s one significant disadvantage – he’s blind in his right eye. Austin suffered a torn retina

at 16, which appeared to dash his dream of going pro. His mom Lisa Green gave him two options: “You can make it your excuse, or you can make it your story,” AP reported. “You can touch lives or you can be a quitter.” Her challenge spurred his son to live out 1 Corinthians 5:7 “For we live by faith and not by sight” – and to keep shooting hoops. In high school, he was a Top 5 player in the US, and was later recruited by Baylor despite his eyesight. With his recent solid showing, Austin, who’s projected to go in the Top 10 in the draft, considers it “a great blessing from God.” But that’s not his ultimate goal. More than being a great player, he told CBS News he wants to be known for his character and for all the lives he’s impacted.

PENSACOLA, FL – James Matthews never imagined playing someday at Carnegie Hall – but that’s what he did on April 20. “It’s a dream come true,” the 24-year-old classical pianist told The University Herald. “I never would have thought in a million years I’d see myself going on that stage.” Matthews started playing piano when he was three and practices up to 10 hours daily. After high school, he fell into hard times and became homeless for a year and a half, sleeping under bridges or in other people’s trucks. “I chose to persevere and stay diligent, to never back down despite how tough living on the streets was,” he said. Looking for safe

shelter, he sometimes slept at the campus’ 24-hour piano studio. His professor found him one day and helped him enroll at another college that offered free housing. “God has been opening one door after another on the path He set me on with music,” said Matthews, who recently appeared on The Ellen Show. The University of Western Florida music scholar won the honourable mention at the 2014 American Protégé International Piano & Strings Competition, giving him the chance to play at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall. Matthews hopes this prestigious debut will open new doors for him as he pursues his dream of being a concert pianist.

Start An Encouragement File by Andrew Hess

Be diligent to encourage the people in your life. The Bible talks a lot about the importance of remembering. Throughout the Scriptures we see men and women told to remember important truths about who God is and what He wants us to do. But the Bible is much more than a list of rules and regulations. It contains many valuable truths and promises that God placed there for our encouragement. The apostle Peter even referred to them as God’s “precious and very great promises” (2 Peter 1:4). One of the reasons I regularly read God’s Word is – much like my encouragement file – I find great inspiration there. I often copy down encouraging verses and passages and add those to my encouragement file. One of my favourite promises is found in Philippians 4:19: “And my God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” Many times I’ve come to God with needs and been lifted up by this reminder that God will meet all of my needs in Jesus. If you are prone to discouragement (and even if you aren’t), I would encourage you to start an encouragement file of your own. Be diligent to encourage the people in your life and treasure up the encouragement you receive. Fill your file with encouragement from others and encouragement from God. Encouragement is contagious. Those who give the most often receive the most. These days, I meticulously save emails, birthday cards, thank you notes and encouraging emails. Whatever difficulties come into my life, I am often strengthened remembering how God has carried me through difficulties in the past and eventually brought me many moments of sweet encouragement. My friends, store up encouragement and return to it often with tears and gratitude. Things To Cheer You Up by Phil Callaway

H

ave you ever noticed when you’re feeling down that there are people and events that can’t help but put a smile on your face? Take, for instance, watching someone fall off a bike. No, that’s not what I was thinking. But how about a Mexican mariachi band? It is impossible to stay discouraged listening to the music in a Mexican restaurant. You may walk in humming “Nobody Knows The Troubles I’ve Seen,” but after hearing “La Cucaracha,” you’ll be donning a sombrero and tapping your flatware to the beat. Chips and salsa will be flying. In John 16:33 of the Bible, Jesus warned, “In this world you will have trouble.” Then he says, “But be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” Followers of Jesus don’t live life with a perma-smile, but we are told often in God’s Word to cheer up, to choose joy. Here are a few things that can help: 1. Listening to banjo music. The banjo was

s Phil Callaway invented by a gentleman whose guitar was run over by a wagon train, then dragged from Albuquerque to Seattle during a rainstorm. I find that guys playing the banjo love to take requests, so I ask if they can play “Far Far Away.” 2. Pre-schoolers. If you can get through the toddler part of a school play without grinning, you have bigger problems than a humourist can fix. 3. Speaking Pig Latin. Pig Latin only dates back to the 1930s, but it’s easier than real Latin. And it is the single most annoying thing you can use to communicate with if you’re past the age of about six. Here’s how. Remove the first consonant from the beginning of the word and

put it on the end, adding “eh.” It’s very Canadian. My name is Hilpeh allawaykeh. The phrase “This is annoying” becomes “Histeh is noyingeh.” Try this at work, but be warned, it may make you laugh, and someone may attempt to brain you.

Do you know the definition of a gentleman? It’s a man who can play the bagpipes, but doesn’t.

4. Holding a puppy. How can you hold a puppy without smiling? It’s impossible. Now holding a full grown Rottweiler and a cat simultaneously is another matter. Visit a pet store and you can get a laugh and a face wash for free.

9. Be a kid again. Find a swing set and climb aboard.

5. Juggling. Before visiting children we sponsor with Compassion International, I decided to learn to juggle. You can’t believe the level of joy this brought the kids. Nothing I did made them laugh more than my attempt at juggling. And the highlight was when things went wrong and golf balls hit the floor. Juggling is dropping things in style. 6. Learn the bagpipes. People will stay far away and you’ll have time to yourself. Do you know why pipers walk while they play? Moving targets are harder to hit.

7. Do The Hokey Pokey. 8. Eat cotton candy. Nurturing your sweet tooth might just put you in a happy mood.

10. Put on a clown nose and visit a hospital. You’ll be funny even if you’re not. 11. Do something random. At stoplights, roll down your window, blow up a balloon and yodel.

Chips and salsa will be flying. You’ll make someone’s day. 12. Look up. Even in the midst of earth’s trials the thought of heaven can fill us with perpetual joy. 13. Pick up my book Laughing Matters. If it doesn’t cheer you up, I’ll send you the new edition – in Pig Latin. Phil Callaway is a speaker, best-selling author, and host of Laugh Again Radio. Check it out at laughagain.org

A few weeks ago I found myself in a particularly busy season in my life. Things were busy at work, and I was getting pretty busy in my free time. Predictably, I started to feel a little discouraged. The combination of everything I had going on was taking its toll. s Andrew Hess So I carved out some time for deeper rest. I spent some time praying for strength. I spent some time sleeping. And I spent some time with my encouragement file. A long time ago, a wise mentor encouraged me to start an encouragement file and to intentionally file away notes of encouragement and thank yous. I initially thought the idea wouldn’t ever mean much to me, thinking I’d always had a good memory and was just saving things I’d remember regardless. But out of respect for my mentor, I started a file and began saving meaningful words of encouragement. He was right; I’ve saved many things in my encouragement file I’d have long forgotten without it. Flash forward 15 years, and I cannot fully express how precious some of these memories are to me today. I open my file and read encouragement from summers working at camp, encouragement from my first boss in my first job out of college, and notes from teachers and professors along the way. I have literally saved hundreds of inspiring bits from several different seasons of my life. God has often used this file to remind me of the wonderful people and opportunities He’s brought into my life. Remembering back often brings me to tears, and it’s those tears that work to melt away moments of exhaustion and discouragement.

Half And Half And Half

Have You Made Your Bed?

s Marcia Laycock by Marcia Laycock

I

have never been an early riser. When I was younger, I used to read with a flashlight under my bed until the wee hours which accounted for my sluggishness in the morning. As sunlight lit my room, my mom would call several times before my toes would finally slip over the side and touch the floor. Then it took a long time in the shower to really wake up before heading downstairs for breakfast. And when I got to the kitchen the refrain was always the same. “Did you make your bed?” I’d groan and trudge back upstairs, knowing there would be no breakfast until that small task was done. One morning I asked my mother why she always insisted that I make my bed. “It’s a good start,” she

said. “It means you’re ready for the day.” I couldn’t help but think about my mom’s words this past Sunday as my husband preached on Acts 9:32-43. Peter was visiting the town of Lydda when a man named Aeneas, a paralytic, caught his attention. The man had been bedridden for eight years, but that day things were about to change. Peter said, “Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and roll up your mat.” That last sentence made me sit up straight. Why did Peter tell him to take care of his mat? Was it in the way? Was it unsightly? Or was

A new day is beginning!

Peter saying something more to Aeneas? I wondered if he was saying, “Get ready Aeneas – a new day is beginning! Things are about to happen and there’s a purpose for you in them.” And that made we wonder about the purpose of the healing. God does not act without reason. His actions, and most especially His blessings, always have purpose. That made me think of

5

the many blessings I’ve been given in my life. The realization that it all has purpose made me think about what God intends me to do. He’s given me wealth and food to share, and a home to open to others. He’s given me health so I can do His will on this earth. He’s given me family that I might raise them to go into the world and bless others. He’s given me the talent of writing so that I might glorify His name through story. All of His blessings have an outward slant – none are intended to be hidden or hoarded. My mother trained me well. Making my bed is still something I do each morning. It makes me feel that the day has started and I’m ready for it. This morning, as I did that quick and simple task, I wondered what God had in store for me today. What am I to be ready for? Ready to hear His voice, ready to move when He says “Go,” ready to speak when His Spirit directs. Yes, all of these things and more. I’m to be ready to receive His blessings and use them for His purposes. What about you? Have you made your bed? lass half full, glass half empty. Doesn’t really matter much to me. As long as mine is the full half. And the glass should be a mug. Large. With coffee in it. And both halves should be full. And it should all be mine. I think I like my coffee with half and half. And at least another half. I might also need another side of math. I saw a bumper sticker recently that said, “I want my coffee and I want it now.” I thought, “I want your coffee, too. And then after that, I’ll want my own coffee.” Judging from this alone, it’s obvious I can be pretty selfish when it comes to coffee. When it comes to judgment, we really don’t know the half of it. Or the other half. God’s love for us is perfect, complete. It’s a greater love than we can

even comprehend. At the same time, God judges sin and evil. And just as His love is perfect, His judgment is also perfect. Glass half full of judgment? No, God doesn’t do things halfway. He hates sin with as much passion as He loves people. We need to understand that God’s judgment is also a part of who God is. Merciful? Yes. But also holy and just. Without His judgment of sin, would He really be holy? Would He really be just? If God didn’t judge sin and evil, just imagine what this world would be like. Evil would be the status

quo. We need a God who judges sin. Since we’re not sinless, God’s holiness is a difficult concept for us. It’s the shining, brilliant, withouta-speck-of-sin kind of holiness. God also knows everything. He knows sin destroys us. Balanced with His hatred of sin is His great compassion and mercy

in sending Jesus. As it says in the Bible, “The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love” (Psalms 145:8). I wonder if we could truly appreciate His mercy without taking into account His judgment. Paul said in Ephesians 2:4-5 that “because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions – it is by grace you have been saved.” God’s was anything but a half-baked plan. It was a judgment plan and a mercy plan all rolled into one. That One being Jesus Christ. Now that we know His plan, our response should be to respect God the judge in every way. And then to appreciate the God of mercy all the more. Contemplating His hatred of sin should remind us to stay on our toes, not letting worldly ideas and philosophies sneak into our thinking and behaviour. God wants our wholehearted devotion. Wholehearted. For those of us who aren’t that great at math, that probably means all three halves. Rhonda Rhea is a radio personality and conference speaker across North America. A Mother’s Greatest Gift by Dr. Charles F. Stanley

T

imothy had hit a point of discouragement. Being a young pastor of a growing church in one of the most pagan cities in the known world was both unsettling and exhausting. This made the apostle Paul’s letters all the more relevant and necessary. s Dr. Charles F. Stanley The apostle encouraged his young protégé not to give up: “For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well. For this reason, I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of hands. For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline” (2 Timothy 1:5-7). Paul knew the exact words to say. In this case, the apostle instructed him to recall the principles of faith he had learned as a young boy from his mother and grandmother. The greatest gift children can receive is the gift of godly faith. This is what Timothy’s mother gave her son. Seven Steps To Raising Godly Children When it comes to rearing godly children, there are seven words I believe will help to ease the confusion. Principle. Many parents may recite Proverbs 22:6: “Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Yet, it’s also important to demonstrate as a parent the unconditional love of God – the one thing that keeps each of us on track. Be sure to teach your children that God loves them and has a plan for their lives (Jeremiah 29:11). These essential principles will give them a solid foundation to overcome

life’s challenges. Take time to listen when your child speaks. Hearing what they say – and in many cases what they don’t say – will add depth and meaning to your relationship with them. Dinner is a great opportunity for conversation. If a problem is mentioned (it usually is), you can say something like, “What do you think God has to say about this?” or “He wants to give you His best, so let’s see what His Word says.” Through this practice, your child will grow up knowing that he can turn to God for answers to his problems. Pattern. All of us have life patterns. They might include a pattern of faith or one of fear. Hannah, the prophet Samuel’s mother, was dedicated to prayer. Therefore, when Samuel grew up, this was a cornerstone in his own life. Likewise, my mother taught me to pray and trust God with every area of my life. Many things in life will be forgotten, but not the prayers of a godly mother. Ask God to make you sensitive to any destructive patterns you may be building in your child’s life.

Take time to listen when your child speaks. Persistence. God calls parents to endure when their teenager seems distant and unresponsive. Don’t give up because persistence will pay great dividends in the years to come. God does not promise that parenting will be easy, but He does promise to give us the wisdom and strength we need for the job. At times, you must take a firm stand with your son or daughter. Children, especially teenagers, may want to push the limits of our patience, but they also want to find someone whom they cannot push away. By staying the course, firmly speaking truth, and not

condemning or belittling your children, you are setting a pattern of faithfulness for them to follow later in life. Participation. Our sons and daughters want to know we truly love them. If they see you visiting at school or attending their plays and ball games, they will know you are on their team. Remember, the way your child sees you is the way he or she will grow up to view God. Praise. One of the greatest motivations for learning is praise – not ridicule. God will never belittle you. He knows the mistakes you have made, but He never thinks, “She won’t ever get it right. She’s a loser.” Praise your children when they do something right, and encourage them to try again whenever they fail. Believe in them, because God believes in you. Take time to listen, instruct them in the ways of God, and praise them for their efforts. Prayer. The greatest lesson my mother taught me was to pray and then trust God for the outcome. I can still hear her say, “Now Charles, we just need to trust God.” When faith and prayer connect, our perspective changes. If we try to figure out all the answers, our children will think they must do the same. However, when we trust God with calm assurance because we have prayed and given Him our problems, then our children will imitate our faith. Priority. Many parents go to church on Sunday, and that’s the end of their involvement with God for the week. Family time is often forced and being alone with God is not a priority. All the while, their children are watching. No matter how packed life becomes, make God your first priority, and you will experience His blessings. The greatest gift a mother can give her son or daughter is the gift of godly devotion. When your life is caught up in Him, He will give you the wisdom you need to teach your children and prepare them for the future. Dr. Charles F. God’s blessing us and helping us love as many women as we can.” Each Sunday she meets new women in the thriving congregation at City Life Church. What happens when a lonely girl transforms into a passionate relationship builder who inspires other women to “do things that are crazy awesome”? For Taylor Madge, coordinator of Connect Groups at City Life Church in Leduc, the transformation resulted in organizing SHINE Sisterhood fundraising events. On June 16th, women from all over the local area will gather at 7 p.m. for food, fellowship, and encouraging stories about what God is doing. Purchasing tickets also supports a great cause. Money raised helps fund Watoto Ministry’s “Keep a Girl in School” project, which provides hygiene supplies for maturing African girls who may not otherwise afford them. Girls who benefit from the project tend to stay in school in an area with high female dropout rates. SHINE stands for “Seeing Her Impact, Navigate and Embrace life beautifully,” which captures Madge’s vision for every woman she meets. The 35-year-old, who helps train leaders at her church, lives to encourage women to live out their potential. Dr. Heidi Janz, a researcher and adjunct professor at the University of Alberta, is living a life that helps others see the disabled differently. She was born with cerebral palsy, but her parents didn’t heed doctors’ advice to put her in an institution. Instead they gave her a normal childhood. She was raised with her two brothers and attended a special school for children with disabilities. While Janz has been confined to a wheelchair for most of her life and depends on others for daily tasks, she has learned to live beyond her limitations. Janz used to think her physical condition would hinder her dream of writing , until a school librarian encouraged the 14-year-old to submit a short story to a local radio program. It was broadcasted, realizing her dream and opening her mind to the possibilities. “I learned that external judgments about quality of life mean little compared to a person’s

SeniorScene by Carolyn R. Tomlin A recent device is helping seniors maintain their independence and stay in their own homes instead of moving into an assisted living complex. Known by different names, an emergency medical alert system can save lives and give families a sense of peace in knowing their loved ones are protected 24/7. Worn as a necklace or bracelet, this device allows a person to receive help at the push of a button, often when a phone is out-ofreach.

What You Need to Know

Most emergency response systems are simple and easy to use. But with any new equipment, it is necessary to ask the right questions and receive answers you understand. What questions should you ask before purchasing this service? First, select a company where the assistant stays on the line until help arrives. Next: Ask other seniors who use a particular brand for recommendations. Providing personal emergency monitoring and home alarm services will allow those with medical ailments or conditions to stay independent and live at home with peace of mind.

Dealing with Longevity

Seniors are living longer and in better health than previous generations. Improved diet and nutrition certainly make a difference. Another is advances in the field of

medicine and medical care. Hip and knee replacements enable people to continue to be active in day-to-day activities and lead a normal life. Regular checkups prevent medical problems from occurring so these can be treated before they get out of control. Advancing years should not be a reason to give up normal routines or pleasures you enjoy. However, older adults still need equipment that insures their well-being. This is where emergency medical equipment is needed. It’s like an insurance policy you may never need – but it’s there just in case!

been treated quicker if they had a medical alert device? In case of an emergency, a reliable system can put a senior in touch with a live assistant and get help fast.

Making the Decision to Use This Equipment

One group who should consider this equipment is seniors who live alone or are those who spend hours by themselves each day. Do other people live in your home? Are they working or away for hours at a time? If you should fall, do you have a plan? As we age, our balance may be affected. Have you fallen in the bathroom or stairs? If you’ve suffered a broken hip or leg, you are more likely to fall again. Seniors who are taking drugs that could cause side effects like dizziness, drowsiness or lightheadedness might also want to consider installing this system. Talk with your healthcare provider and know what to expect. We all want to stay in our homes as long as possible. Consider using emergency medical equipment and maintain your independence, while giving your family the sense of peace that you are cared for.

Age shouldn’t be a reason to give up normal activities you enjoy

Recent research indicates that in seniors, aged 65 or older, one in three people fall each year. Records show the direct medical costs of falls exceeded $30 billion dollars annually. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2.3 million nonfatal fall injuries among older adults were treated in emergency rooms in 2010. And more than 662,000 of these patients were hospitalized. In seniors, falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries. Part of this number is due to blood thinners that doctors often prescribe to prevent blood clots. When a person is on a blood thinner and a fall occurs, serious complications can result. Parenting by Dr. Greg Smalley I can vividly remember the heated conflict my mother and I had about college the summer after my high school graduation. “Why won’t you fill out your college applications?” my mother demanded. “Do you realize that it might be too late? I can’t believe you are doing this!”

“Get off my back!” I yelled back at her. “I know what I’m doing!” I had no idea what I was doing. However, I quickly discovered how foolish I had been.

Giving Teens the Keys to

All of the schools needed transcripts, marks, and letters of recommendation. Somehow I thought I could simply “show up” and begin taking classes. After all, that is what I did in high school. “Sorry, the freshman class is already at full capacity,” the admission clerk stated in a not so gentle manner. “You can always go to a junior college and apply next semester.” My mother had been right. The news sent shock waves throughout my entire body. I felt like going outside and beating myself up, but I reasoned that they would probably “frown” on that kind of behaviour. Fortunately, my sister introduced me to the person who was able to get my application approved. I started that week on academic probation. As I so eloquently illustrated, without a clear direction and purpose it can be very easy for teenagers to make poor choices regarding their future. Some teens will begin early to decide about education, dating, and a career. Others will wait (like me) until the last minute to make these major

decisions. Many parents may be wondering if they can be helpful with these decisions. YES! Although we can’t make the major decisions for our teens, we can teach them the ‘art’ of making wise life-decisions. I believe the process begins by asking a teenager two foundational questions.

1. What is your MISSION in life?

Jesus commanded us to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.”

Guess Mom was right ! Then He added the second greatest commandment: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” Therefore, the question becomes, “What specifically can I do to serve God and others?” The “what” question determines our mission in life. There are many thousands of possibilities. My mission is to help people resolve conflicts within their most important relationships (e.g. spiritual, family, marital, business). What teens find by choosing their own “what” to serve others, is a higher degree of motivation in life and a greater desire to find

a school to learn the knowledge necessary to serve others skillfully. Teens often lack motivation to study because they have little or no idea of what they want to do later in life. The “what” question is not the “how” question. The mission is an overall theme, like “helping people who are sick.” The “how” is any one of hundreds of ways to get our mission accomplished.

2. What METHOD will you use to accomplish your mission?

Here we get more specific and choose the type of schooling or training needed to accomplish our mission. For example, if our mission is to help people who are suffering physically, we may choose any one of many vocations: doctor, dentist, nurse, physical therapist, pharmacist, or relief worker. The list can be a mile long. But with a clear mission in our minds, our motivation to find the best place to learn how to get our mission done greatly increases. Our ability to listen and learn increases, our intensity, our creativity, our enthusiasm, and whatever it takes to succeed increases. Probiotics Primer

by Beth Bence Reinke, MS, RD

Bacteria for breakfast – it’s the newest health kick. More and more people are trying probioticinfused dairy products, each spoonful teeming with microscopic organisms that promise to contribute to good health.

What are probiotics?

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, probiotics are defined as “live microorganisms, which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host.” These “friendly bacteria” are added to foods during processing or put into capsules or powders which are sold as supplements. Dairy products like yogurt, kefir and buttermilk are the most common probiotic-enhanced foods, but others are flooding the market such as infant formula, juice, cereal and even candy bars. Foods that ordinarily contain probiotics include cottage cheese, tempeh, miso, soy sauce and fresh sauerkraut.

What about prebiotics?

Prebiotics are dietary substances that serve as food for the probiotic bacteria. Common prebiotics include inulin, oligofructose and lactulose. Prebiotics are found naturally in foods like onions, garlic, oatmeal, honey, wheat, barley, legumes, bananas, berries, leafy greens and leeks. Some probiotic-infused dairy products have

prebiotics added to help the friendly microbes survive in the intestinal tract. Added prebiotics should be listed on the ingredients label.

Why eat bacteria?

The main reason to use probiotics is because they increase the “good bacteria” in the gut. These microbes, trillions of them in the small and large intestines, play key roles in digestion and immune function. The gut houses much of the body’s immune system, so balancing the available bacteria helps maximize immune function. Sometimes the normal gut bacteria, also called intestinal flora, are disrupted by antibiotics or illness. A number of the good flora may be wiped out and bad bacterial overgrowth may result, causing diarrhea and other gastrointestinal miseries. Adding back some good bacteria via probiotics helps normalize bacterial colonization. That’s why doctors recommend eating yogurt while taking antibiotics.

Health benefits of probiotics

According to the World Gastroenterology Organisation, there is adequate evidence to utilize probiotics for: · acute infectious diarrhea · antibiotic-associated diarrhea · irritable bowel syndrome · lactose intolerance · prevention of atopic dermatitis (eczema) · boosting immune function

Are all probiotics alike?

Definitely not. There are a couple things to keep in mind about how probiotics work. First, they may not work the same for everyone. Each person has a distinctive pattern of bacterial flora in his or her intestines, so a certain probiotic may not have the same benefit for you as it will for someone else.

Some people who try probiotic supplements get positive effects in as little as a week or two. For others, it may take a month or two to see results. Second, the benefits of probiotics are strainspecific. If a study shows that one strain of probiotic bacteria prevents infections, it does not mean that all probiotics prevent infections. One strain may help with allergies while another may treat diarrhea.

Are they safe?

Most food sources of probiotics, like yogurt, kefir and cereal, are probably safe for most healthy people. A doctor should be consulted before giving probiotic supplements to young children, the elderly, and anyone with a medical condition or compromised immune function.

What is the recommended dose?

Most human studies used daily dosing of probiotics, whether in food or supplement form. Dosing depends on which strain is used and what health benefit is desired. Anyone who is considering taking a probiotic supplement should consult a physician for dosage recommendations.

Yogurt anyone?

There is much to discover about how added bacteria interact with normal intestinal flora. For now, eating a cup of yogurt with live active cultures and probiotics is probably a wise move for most healthy people. At the very least, you get protein, calcium, vitamin D and other nutrients along with the friendly critters. Bacteria for breakfast – why not? The client was a nervous man who couldn’t fill a cleaning bottle without spilling it, yet he never quit. One day he came back from the Special Olympics, wearing a medal he won in a stranger-filled stadium. “Just because he had challenges didn’t mean he would give up,” LeVox says. “That took a kind of faith I’d never seen before.” Inspired by his client’s courage, he left the

“We’re just not afraid to share [our faith] publicly anymore.” LeVox, who learned to play electric guitar by watching his father and grandfather, sang in public for the first time in a church Christmas pageant. He was only nine years old, and from that point on he knew he wanted to be a singer. “Over the years, my little voice got big,” he says. “I never took lessons; it was a gift from God, one that I wanted more and more to use.” As LeVox struggled to make it in the music business, he started working at the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities. The job was hard work, but it came with unexpected benefits. One of the men LeVox helped train to live independently taught him a lesson he would never forget.

Joe Don Rooney

job he loved so much and joined his cousin DeMarcus on a journey to Nashville, where they would meet up with Rooney to make music that continues to change lives. DeMarcus was already working in Nashville as a member of the now-defunct Christian band East to West. After leaving the duo, he joined another band where he met Rooney. When their part-time guitarist couldn’t make it at a gig one night, he invited his cousin LeVox to perform with them, and the rest is history. Having sold more than 22.5 million albums and over 28 million digital downloads, Rascal Flatts have also delivered 14 No. 1 singles

and seven consecutive studio albums that have debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Albums chart. They earned a star on the Radio City Walk of Fame in 2010, and in 2012 they joined the Grand Ole Opry and received their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. More recently, they received the Jim Reeves International Award at the 2014 Academy of Country Music Awards for helping elevate country music’s stature worldwide. They have also worked with organizations such as Make-a-Wish and the American Red Cross to fight hunger and teen suicide, and provide support to children with cancer. Whether they are bringing home awards or helping their friends and fans, LeVox knows one thing is certain. “There are just no words for what we have been able to accomplish except God. God is the key ingredient and He’s been the centre of our lives for a long time,” he told The Camrose Canadian. “He blesses abundantly, and I’m just honoured to be a small part of it.”

Since 2000, country music band Rascal Flatts have been turning out hits that make up the soundtrack of music fans’ lives. Joe Don Rooney, Jay DeMarcus and Gary LeVox know that words have power to heal and encourage, and their song choices and lyrics reflect that. The trio’s biggest hit, “Bless the Broken Road” from their third album Feels Like Today, stayed at the country charts’ No. 1 slot for five weeks and won a Grammy award for Best Country Song. It is certified platinum. “Rewind,” the title track off their latest release due out on May 13, has already cracked Top 10 on Country radio. The music video has garnered over 3 million views on YouTube. Also featured is the song “Compass,” which appears in the movie Heaven Is For Real, currently in theatres and based on the NY Times best-selling book. The mission of Rascal Flatts is not to preach about rights and wrongs (“we’re not a band on a crusade”), but their Christian faith influences who they are as individuals and performers. It comes across in their music – and in their album’s liner notes. “We always thank God and the Lord Saviour Jesus Christ,” Rooney told the Chicago Sun-Times. “Gary, Jay and I, we know who we are and what our faith means to us and our fans ... we’re just not afraid to share that publicly anymore.” Just a year ago, the band’s hit “Changed” climbed not just the country charts but also Christian and adult contemporary charts as well. The song is still a favourite, moving fans to tears. “I am so blessed to have a platform to stand there and see what music does to people and their hearts,” said LeVox, who co-wrote the song with Neil Thrasher and Wendell Mobley. The first lines of the song were inspired by the baptism of Thrasher’s daughter. Thrasher described the pastor taking her out of the water and raising her hand, and that’s how these lyrics emerged: “I came up out of the water, raised my hands up to the Father, gave it all to Him that day, and felt a new wind kiss my face.” “It’s one of those moments that we felt like we just held the pen. God did all the work,” the 43-year-old LeVox recalls. “It’s

such a song of hope, and as a songwriter, it’s the proudest thing I’ve ever been a part of.” Music and faith have worked harmoniously in LeVox’s life from the time he was a young boy. “My grandfather taught me to sing my first song when I was seven, ‘Old Rugged Cross,’ Rascal Flatts’ lead vocalist writes in Guideposts. “I recorded it on a little tape recorder, my high, quiet voice struggling to be heard over my grandfather’s guitar.”

MIKESCHAIR All Or Nothing mikeschair.com Review by Matt Conner It’s no secret that Mike Grayson can write a catchy song. With hit singles like “Let The Waters Rise” and “Can’t Take Away,” the lead singer for Mikeschair has earned several Dove Award nominations, high-profile tours and radio airplay on the strength of his songwriting. Expect the same from the band’s latest, All or Nothing. Nearly 10 years into a career, Mikeschair is clearly hitting its pop/rock stride. The album’s cornerstone, “People Like Me,” features Matthew West and speaks of addiction and the need for God’s grace. Grayson sings, “Show me a life that’s broken that can’t be redeemed/Show me that you can handle my honesty/ And help me to know/You’ll never let go/Your love will never leave/Show me that grace was made for people like me.” “Everything You Say” is an upstart pop number about the listener’s identity in Christ. “Forever Faithful” could find a home in some congregational worship sets, while “I Can Wait” is a tender, personal testament to stay patient in uncertain situations. Both songs speak to Mikeschair’s ability to rally a crowd or reach the lonely, and All or Nothing remains as accessible as the rest of the band’s catalog. SHAWN MCDONALD Brave shawnmcdonaldmusic.com Review by Matt Conner Longtime Shawn McDonald listeners will likely do a double take the moment “We Are Brave” kicks off the initial listen to the songwriter’s latest, Brave. The clap-along anthem breaks out with an electronic pulse that builds to a largescale pop chorus. In short, it’s everything you would not expect from the singer-songwriter. McDonald has built a career on vulnerable acoustic refrains like “Gravity” and “Closer,” but his fifth studio album is a more layered affair. The acoustic base remains on several tracks, but the pop sheen add-on makes it difficult to differentiate songs like “End of the Day” from standard radio fare. It’s not surprising for artists to want to explore new textures, but in this case it moves McDonald’s music toward the middling mainstream of the industry. For those who linger with the songs, however, the same deeper streams can be found. “Firefly” is an easy, hopeful song that should be a fan favourite. “Worlds Apart” stands with McDonald’s finest, soaring with new musical wings while avoiding production pitfalls that plague others on Brave. “Through It All” and “Compass” are highlights as well. While his new sound may likely alienate longtime fans, perhaps Brave will invite new fans to the table for Shawn McDonald. FRANCESCA BATTISTELLI If We’re Honest francescamusic.com Review by Lindsay Williams Francesca Battistelli won the loyalty of fans by wearing her heart on her sleeve for her 2008 debut. Her third studio project, If We’re Honest, continues to showcase the authenticity that first endeared her to fans. Thanks to longtime producer Ian Eskelin (Chris August, Dara Maclean), If We’re Honest propels Battistelli to the next level sonically. The 11 tracks reveal a candid glimpse into the personal

JukeBox life of the 28-year-old wife and mother. The fervent energy and lyrical creativity of “Write Your Story” serve as the perfect introduction to the album. The quirky, true-to-life “When The Crazy Kicks In,” reminiscent of “This Is The Stuff,” finds the award-winning singer-songwriter attempting to juggle life’s demands. Stand-out track “Unusual” reminds listeners it’s OK to be different: “Grey is now the status quo/ Black and white’s not in, you know/ You’re the zebra in the pony show …” The title track centres around a stripped-down piano melody that finds Battistelli waxing poetic on being authentic, and anthemic closer “We Are the Kingdom” features a worshipful chorus that will prove to be a future concert moment-maker. If We’re Honest is an accurate representation of a wife, mother and songwriter doing her best to chase after Jesus Christ in the midst of real life. SATELLITES & SIRENS One Noise facebook.com/ satellitesandsirens Review by Lindsay Williams For fans of Hillsong United and OneRepublic, Satellites & Sirens’ latest album, One Noise, packs high-energy worship, pop and rock into a dozen dance-ready tracks. First radio single “Jump Start My Heart” provides proof of the band’s high-octane vitality fueling singable lyrics. Hawk Nelson frontman Jonathan Steingard co-wrote and produced multiple tracks, leaving his indelible mark on the album’s hookiest cuts, like the memorable “Magnetic,” appropriately titled since the chorus instantly draws listeners in. He also sings in “Breakthrough,” one of the most radio-friendly offerings with its smooth mix of R&B and pop Justin Timberlakestyle. Closer “United Kingdom” proves a fitting finale, inviting believers to unite under the banner of Christ. Hidden in heavy doses of drums and guitars are perceptive lyrics. On “Our God Is Able,” lead vocalist Geoff Hunker sings, “You are the God of life/ You are the God of death/ No power against can stand/ Our God is able.” Then, on stand-out “You Traded Heaven,” this line rings true: “You traded heaven to be with us/ A crimeless death that won our hearts …” While the band hasn’t quite perfected the tedious blend of gutwrenching lyrics and emotive melodies like their peers in Hillsong United, with One Noise, Satellites & Sirens becomes a serious contender in the game of high-quality atmospheric rock. NEEDTOBREATHE Rivers In The Wasteland needtobreathe.com Review by Josh McConnell It has been two and a half years since the South Carolina band Needtobreathe released their last effort. Since then, the band has continued their growth in mainstream popularity with strong radio airplay, major network television appearances – and even opening for Taylor Swift. But just when you think you know Needtobreathe from all this exposure, they seem to reinvent themselves with each new record. Once again, the three-man band displays a fresh sonic side as they revisit their purpose with Rivers In The Wasteland. Though there has always been a bit of southern rock influence in their music, the band has usually played upbeat, Brit-pop tunes.

17

Not anymore. Now Needtobreathe sounds refreshingly rich, laidback and very Americana in its southern-rock-meets-alternative goodness. They’re a mixture of Black Keys, Arcade Fire and Mumford & Sons, with a little bouncy banjo tossed in. This unexpected change of sound is executed extremely well. The album brings listeners on a heartfelt musical journey, from the prayerful “Wasteland,” and inspiring “Difference Maker,” to foot stomping tracks like “State I’m In” and “The Heart.” All pleasant surprises aside, Rivers In The Wasteland is well worth your time and money. Go pick this one up. UNSPOKEN Unspoken unspokenmusic.com Review by Josh McConnell Sometimes in Christian music the line between pop and worship is hard to define. Newcomers Unspoken fall into the grey area. The four-member multicultural band – composed of Chad Mattson and Jon Lowry (both from Maine), Mike Gomez (Dominican Republic) and Ariel Munoz (Puerto Rico) – recently released their full length self-titled debut with Centricity Records following three EPs from the same label. Unspoken’s tracklist serves up radio-friendly offerings that feature catchy keyboards and U2-inspired guitar scales, including their two Top 5 hits “Who You Are” and “Lift My Life Up.” Everything checks out for your standard pop effort. They also offer simple yet insightful lyrics. Lead singer Mattson’s past struggle with addiction and the victory he’s found in Jesus inspired songs such as “Who You Are” (“You can never fall too hard, so fast, so far/ That you can’t get back when you lost where you are ... At the foot of the cross you can change who you are”) and “Call It Grace” (“It’s nothing less than scandalous, this love that took our place / Just call it what it is/ Call it grace.”) Unspoken’s promising soulful release contains a handful of gems. Give it a listen. MERCYME Welcome To The New mercyme.org Review by Lindsay Williams Crossover hit “I Can Only Imagine” introduced the world to an unknown Texan rock band, and since then, MercyMe has gone on to sell more than 6.5 million records. With its eighth full-length studio effort, Welcome To The New, the beloved band ushers in a fresh season. The album centres on the theme that God could never love us more than He already does. The result is a record boasting raw energy, renewed passion and some of the most relatable lyrics of the band’s career. From the swinging opening beats of the title track to the insatiable hook of lead single “Shake,” longtime fans will be surprised to find upbeat tracks that make you want to dance. Americana-flavoured cut “Greater” showcases a musical progression that launches the band into Mumford & Sons territory. Centrepiece “Flawless” follows with this gem of a line: “The cross has made you flawless.” “Wishful Thinking” rides a smooth, creative chorus that channels some of the band’s musical influences. On “Dear Younger Me,” Bart Millard sings of regret, angst and hope all rolled into a heart-wrenching acoustic closer that’s both lyrically poignant and melodically stylish. It seems a new perspective worked wonders for the band. Welcome to the New is musically ambitious, lyrically sound and one of MercyMe’s best records yet.

SOMETIMES IT’S THE RIGHT SONG AT THE RIGHT TIME. Safe & Fun for the Whole Family!

BALANCING IT ALL

MORAL REVOLUTION

THE STORM INSIDE

Lloyd John Ogilvie is no stranger in the Christian community. He stands head and shoulders above many as a gifted preacher and writer. This particular book is a compilation of Bible studies which began as personal devotions, became sermons preached at his church in Hollywood California, and then taught during his chaplaincy to politicians. After a thorough study, Ogilvie concluded that Jesus’ parables are not just stories. He discovered that behind every parable is God. By delving into each parable, one discovers a unique quality of God and how He works in people’s lives. In fact, Olgilvie says the parables are like, “a ball of yarn with one single strand protruding. Get hold of that, pull with prayer and study, and you can unravel the whole ball. “In a world that is confused about God and is beguiled by distorted images of His nature, it’s time to return to His autobiography, and learn what He said about Himself and the amazing, abundant life He offers to each of us.” What Ogilvie offers to the reader of this fine book is 29 carefully detailed chapters, each dedicated to one of Jesus’ parables. It’s God’s autobiography. Read it and encounter Him on every page.

If you enjoyed watching the 1980s sitcom, Full House, you will remember the affable middle sister D. J. All grown up with three children of her own, Candace Cameron Bure somehow found time to write her second published book, Balancing It All. Working in television since age five, Bure’s life has been a constant balancing act. Throughout the book, she credits her loving parents, particularly her mother, for setting healthy boundaries and keeping life “normal” – no easy task with two older sisters and famous big brother-actor Kirk Cameron. Balancing It All is a mixture of autobiography and reflections on a commitment to a strong work ethic and old-fashioned family values. Apart from being bullied and her parents’ brief separation, Bure’s life from childhood until age 20 (after marrying famous hockey player Valeri Bure) seems almost too easy. Her real challenge began during her first year of marriage when she moved to Montreal following Val’s trade to the Habs. For the first time she was without work. Bure shares how she went from an agitated newlywed to a mom, actress and author who’s found balance. Bure writes with optimism and exudes confidence. She has a heart for young women and encourages her readers with hope that although life may not be perfect, they too can balance it all.

Kris and Jason Vallotton are calling for an uprising in their book Moral Revolution. What Kris and Jason seek to accomplish with this book goes beyond simply providing a “howto” for dating. This book is a call to reclaim the meaning of love, beauty and relationship from a perspective of purity. Their very noble and ambitious goal is to start a fire that will ignite a true, moral revolution among the youth of the world. By using well chosen parables to illustrate Biblical values and healthy morals, the writers hope to reach a cross-section of young people from all segments of society. Drawing on their years of experience working with people through church and educational ministries, the Vallottons have been able to create a definitive handbook that could easily become the catalyst for a different kind of sexual revolution; one that would benefit the participants for generations to come. Written in an informal, informative style with thought provoking questions following each section, Moral Revolution would make an excellent small group study for adults as well as for youth.

Do you struggle with feelings of regret, insecurity or shame? Perhaps fear, bitterness, or anger? Chances are you do. In 30 years of speaking to over five million women, Sheila Walsh has found the same issues plague women everywhere, regardless of who they are. The Storm Inside is the best-selling author’s truth-based message of how we can find strength in our storm. Each chapter covers common feelings that can become overwhelming burdens. She explains the true meaning of heartbreak, defines what forgiveness is and isn’t, how unforgiveness imprisons us, and then how we can come to forgiveness even after it’s festered subconsciously for decades. Walsh uses personal experiences and shares the stories of others openly and honestly. Sometimes she leads us to laugh, sometimes to cry, but always to be touched, strengthened, and encouraged. Each chapter ends with practical steps to help us stand strong. Sheila Walsh encourages women to surround themselves by the truth of God’s Word and to take our sorrows to Him. Not only will we find hope in the storm that rages inside of us, but we’ll learn how to help those in chaos or crisis around us.

Living Light News - May/June 2014

No Cheque Is Big Enough To Pay This Off! Sometimes, it’s not just about the money. Alison Redford would know. Redford’s questionable travel expenditures, including attending Nelson Mandela’s funeral, were costly for the former Alberta premier in more ways than one. On Dec. 8, 2013 she boarded a Government of Alberta plane from Calgary to Ottawa at a cost of $15,000. From there, Redford flew on the Prime Minister’s Airbus to South Africa. By the time Redford returned five days later, she had racked up $45,000 in travel expenses. According to news reports, the bill also included a first-class return flight from South Africa and travel costs for an aide. It didn’t take long for criticism to start pouring in. In February, she accepted the blame for the decisions that led to the exorbitant expense, but refused to pay it back. “Mistakes were made. I accept responsibility for that and I apologize,” the

National Post reported. On March 12, 2014, Redford eventually relented – but this time, she put her money where her mouth was. “I want to sincerely apologize to Albertans for these costs,” she said at a news conference. “I have personally paid for the costs associated with the recent South African trip.” But the damage to her

image was done. On top of that, signs of discontent emerged from her party as two members of the Progressive Conservative caucus left, and several MLAs threatened to quit. Paying for the trip wasn’t enough to win back the public or her colleagues. In the end, it didn’t save her. The truth is, we have all

incurred a huge debt that no amount of money can pay off – just like Redford. Whether it’s by willfulness or ignorance, the Bible says that “all have sinned” (Romans 3:23). When Jesus Christ taught His disciples how to pray, He described sin as a type of debt (Matthew 6:12). Just like debt, sin carries serious

consequences: it separates us from a holy God (Isaiah 59:2) and it leads to death (Romans 3:23). All the more reason for it to be paid off. But no amount of good works or hefty donation to charity will do. It requires the death of someone who has never sinned. That’s why Jesus came. Jesus Christ – the Son of God who was without sin – came to earth 2,000 years ago to take mankind’s sins upon Himself and pay the penalty once and for all (2 Corinthians 5:21). Because of His incredible love, He left heaven willingly to die a criminal’s death on the cross on our behalf. The Bible says “He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities;

the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:6). On the third day, He rose again promising eternal life to those who put their faith in Him. The cross offers forgiveness, adoption into God’s family, and a new life in Christ. To receive God’s forgiveness, you need to confess your sins and turn from them, then accept that Jesus paid the penalty for you. It’s already been done. The cheque has been written on your behalf. Are you ready to claim it? If so, pray this prayer from your heart: Dear God, I am truly sorry for sinning against You. Please forgive me for the wrong things I have done. From now on, I will turn my back on my old ways and live for You. Thank you that You loved me so much You sent Your Son Jesus Christ to die for me so my sin debt can be forgiven. Please come into my life and guide me as I begin this new journey with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen

Getaways

Iceland

Incredible by Sarah Chestnutt Iceland is all about contradictions living side-by-side. Complete wilderness is only 20 minutes from city centre. Soothe away the day in natural hot spring swimming pools (found in every town) or get a rush from extreme sports on the Arctic Circle. Fire and ice meet as volcano eruptions meet glaciers. And now, it’s easier than ever to go. As of March 5, Icelandair offers direct flights from Edmonton to Reykjavik five days a week. When you land seven hours later, Reykjavik is a 45-minute drive, but many shuttle companies are available. Some make a stop 20 minutes in that you won’t want to miss – the Blue Lagoon. One of the biggest must-dos, Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa in the middle of a lava field. Soak in the blue water of a natural hot tub unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Pre-book online for quick entry. You’ll find more than enough in Reykjavik to keep you busy. It was designated as UNESCO City of Literature, the only non-English speaking city to receive the honour. The locals speak Icelandic, but English is the second official language, so if you’re having trouble picking up the local dialect and really need to find a bathroom you shouldn’t have trouble! Visit the Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre by the old harbour. Built in 2011, the glass facade reflects both sky and sea and is a definite must-see.

If

unpopulated, it leaves lots of space for dramatic wilderness. Þingvellir National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site, Snæfellsjökull National Park has a volcano and glacier, reaching from sea to sky. Jökulsárlon, the world’s largest glacier lagoon, is breathtaking. Go whale or seal watching along the coastline. Take a bird watching tour for puffins and albatross at Látrabjarg. It’s an outdoor enthusiast’s – and adrenaline junkie’s – paradise. Kayak and white water raft in glacial rivers, then go into the depths with some of the world’s most incredible scuba diving hot spots, including Silfra in Þingvellir National Park. Keep to the land (and lava fields) by renting a mountain bike to explore the terrain that might have well been made for it. Lace up the boots and hike part of Landmannalaugar – a 55 km trail linking Þorsmörk glacier valley to Landmannalaugar hot springs. The sun never sets in June in northern Iceland – so running out of daylight will be the last thing on your mind. When it’s time to draw the curtains and get some shut eye, choose from anything between fivestar hotels and traditional turf houses or farmhouses to experience Icelandic life. Fire and ice. Bustling city and dramatic wilderness. Soothing hot springs and adrenaline-filled adventures. Contrasts abound – but one sure thing: you’ll never forget a trip to Iceland!

The close-knit community is full of talent. You’ll see it in spades at art galleries, performing arts centres, and music venues (remember Björk?). And you’re at a great time of year to see the showcase – June 17 is Iceland’s National Day and celebrations will take over country-wide. Another reason to go in June is Landsmot, showcasing the unique Icelandic horse breed not found anywhere else. Make sure to grab some króna (local currency) – you’ll find lots to buy. When shopping, you’ll find the island specialties of knitwear, ceramics, and silver jewellery. Time for a bite? Try the freshest fish or lamb you’ve ever had – the lack of pollution and clear ocean waters make the food incomparable. Eat like a local and give Skyr (similar to yogurt) a taste. Reykjavik has enough to fill the schedule – but don’t let it! A trip to Iceland is wasted if you don’t take in the incredible adventures outside city limits. Surprising to many, ice covers only 10 per cent of Iceland. The rest is waterfalls, geysers, steaming lava fields and formations, cliffs, black sand beaches – and some of the world’s most active volcanoes, including famous Mt. Hekla. With 80 per cent of the country
