ast season, Clayton Kershaw had one for the record books. Kershaw had a breakout season, winning the NL Cy Young Award and pitching’s Triple Crown, the youngest in 26 years to do both in the same season. Kershaw, 24, had never eclipsed 13 wins before in his Major League career, but last season, he went 21-5 with an ERA of 2.28. Kershaw dominated with a big curveball considered to be one of baseball’s best and with a new season starting, he looks to build on the success, proving it was not just a one-year flash in the pan. Kershaw’s rise to the top last year was a product of his maturation in the game of baseball. “It’s just a continuation of getting better every year,” the Los Angeles Dodger tells Living Light News about his breakout season. “I’ve continued to progress and that’s part of it. If you’re not getting better, you’re getting worse because everybody else around you is getting better. It’s just gaining experience and getting comfortable.”
The Cy Young Award and Triple Crown outshone his wildest dreams. “Oh, it’s awesome! I never, in a million years, thought I would win something like that. People ask me if I dreamed about it when I was a kid and I say, ‘No, I just dreamed about playing in the big leagues!’ ” As a southpaw there were fewer options for Kershaw when he took the field. “Being left-handed, I could really only play as a pitcher, at first-base, or in the outfield. I wasn’t fast enough to play in the outfield so I played pitcher and first-base in high school. I couldn’t hit very good so by process of elimination, I started pitching.” It was a move that would payoff for Kershaw and the Dodgers.

Being a pitcher, Kershaw has had examples to look up to, and always respected the achievements of Andy Pettitte, pitcher for the New York Yankees. “Nolan Ryan was always one of my favourites and Roger Clemens. Being lefthanded, I really liked Andy Pettitte and the type of success that he’s had. His playoff success speaks for itself.” Now that he has won the Cy Young, Kershaw is focused on Clayton the World Series. “For Kershaw me, it’s just about winning

games. All the individual success is great but until you’ve won that World Series, until you get to celebrate with your teammates at the end of the season, I don’t think anything can compare to that.” He hopes this is the year the Dodgers, currently with 19 wins and 11 losses, can win their first World Series since 1988. “We’ve got a good team,” Kershaw noted about this year’s installment of the Los Angeles Dodgers, this season under new ownership. “We played pretty well the last two months of the season last year. I’m pretty optimistic about it.” High school was about more than baseball for Kershaw. He also dove deep into a relationship with Jesus Christ. Though he had grown up attending church in Dallas, Texas, he made a change in his high school years. “I understood the basics of it, but it probably wasn’t until my junior or senior year of high school that I started to make my walk with Christ my own and started to really understand what it meant to be a follower of Jesus.” Kershaw knew there was more to life. “I’ve always wondered at creation. I just look around and see all the incredible things going on in the world. You see the sky, the sun, the mountains, and the ocean and you know there’s more out there than just us,” he says. “It doesn’t just come from a big bang or whatever anyone else thinks. There’s a lot more out there and it really made me start thinking about how powerful and almighty God is.” As Kershaw began to seek God more, God became a bigger part of his life and his personal relationship with the Lord grew stronger. Being a Major League Baseball player can be difficult for a Christian, with the demands that are on each player. “To be a Christian and be in baseball, you have to mold (faith) into your life.
categorical, and complete surrender of my life,” he says. “Something miraculous happened – I was rescued.” His addictions vanished and his marriage, under increasing stress, began to repair. Needing a break from the fast-paced lifestyle, he quit his job. In the midst of rebuilding his life, Kissack heard of three Mexican fisherman rescued from their own storm. They were adrift on the Pacific for nine months and 5,500 miles with only an eight-metre boat and a Bible. “When I heard they survived on raw fish, rainwater, and faith, that’s when it started to grab me. They said these two very practical and concrete things, raw fish and water, helped them survive. But faith was added in as if it was just as practical and concrete. “After chewing on that for a while, it took up residence in my heart. I knew it was more than a survival story. It was a faith story, in which survival was a part.” Kissack sought out the men. He soon saw similarities between the fishermen’s experience and his own. “They were lost, drifting at sea, and I was lost, drifting in my own ocean of junk.” In The Fourth Fisherman (WaterBrook Press), Kissack, 49, weaves together the stories of men who found their lifeline in Jesus. “That which the fisherman found truth and confidence in has also been my foundation,” he says. Kissack’s journey shows how much he relies on God. “I can trust Him with everything – with my life, my marriage, children, finances, future, past – I don’t have to worry about any of those things.” No longer adrift, he found his anchor. “I’m just a regular guy from a small town who has been rescued … I feel I’ve been given a real purpose for my life. I had no idea how fulfilling it could be.”
“What I mean by that is that we are at the baseball field every day for eight months out of the year. It can be easy to put baseball first and make it your first priority. You have to put God in all aspects of your life. I make sure that God is in every part of my life and I make sure to be in constant communication with Him,” he explains. In December 2010, Kershaw married his wife, Ellen, and now they team up to make a difference in the lives of those with less in Africa and the United States. They started Kershaw’s Challenge: Strikeout To Serve, which has already helped to open an orphanage in Zambia. The Challenge makes each strikeout Kershaw pitches matter not only to his team but for children at risk – the couple have pledged for the second year running to donate $100 each time he strikes out an opposing batter. Last season he also donated the monetary prizes he received, bringing the total amount raised to $202,000. It all started when Ellen met Hope, an orphan in Africa. “Ellen fell in love with her and wanted to help, so she had the idea of starting an orphanage. That’s what all the money we raised last year went to. The ground has been broken there and it’s set to be up and running in May. It’s amazing how much God has helped with that,” he reports enthusiastically. This season, Kershaw’s Challenge will again be assisting in Africa and other organizations including I am Second, Mercy Street, and the Peacock Foundation. For Clayton Kershaw, it’s all about teamwork. Whether it is with his team working towards a World Series, with his wife building orphanages in Zambia, or teaming up with God in his life, he has learned the value of a team working together for a common goal.

. In a thousand dollar tuxedo, Ferragamo shoes, Rolex, and $300 sunglasses, Joe Kissack looked the part as he walked the Emmys red carpet. He had climbed the ladder to executive vice-president of Sony Pictures. Dining in the best restaurants, shopping for elite brands, and driving a Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet home to his wife and two daughters in a 6,000-square-foot house was a normal day. Not bad for a kid from a blue-collar family from smalltown Illinois. Working in television was logical for Kissack, who spent hours watching classics such as Hogan’s Heroes. “It really stems from the passion of watching TV as a kid.” He went from watching TV to bringing shows to homes around the country by licensing syndication – such as Mad About You and Seinfeld. “Getting in that business Joe Kissack was natural for me. Then I did what I had basically grown up doing, which was perform,” he explains. “The way I grew up, in a household based on performance and expectation of perfection – you could put me on just about any path and I would do it fairly well. That’s the only way I thought I had value.” By Hollywood standards Kissack had made it – but he found himself drifting aimlessly as he searched for fulfilment. “I was under the illusion … if I performed enough, earned
enough, and achieved enough, I would find what I was looking for. I did – and it wasn’t. Enough that is,” he says. “At the end you realize its all smoke … and when that happened to me, I didn’t know what to do.” Depressed, Kissack turned to alcohol and prescriptions to ease his personal storm. “It wasn’t really working for me, but I thought I was doing everything you were supposed to do.” Filled with anxiety, he didn’t know where to turn except deeper into addictions. “When you only know how to do things one way … that’s your whole bag of tricks. And when I went to do that, it didn’t work anymore. I couldn’t make it any better. “When I tried to fill myself with that it was like empty calories – it stopped satisfying … I’m the poster child for the illusion of success,” he says. “I had a friend, Joshua, who for years had seen me struggle while attempting to ‘fix’ myself. When I told him I was going to check into a hospital to try to find more ‘fixing,’ he called me and asked to meet with me,” recalls Kissack, who was on the brink of suicide in 2004. “ ‘There is one solution for you Joe, and it is a relationship with Jesus Christ,’ he said with as much strength and intensity possible.” The message broke through the storm engulfing Kissack’s life and he found himself drawing near to the lifeline offered. “After years of attempting to find satisfaction and fulfillment on my own, I surrendered. Newsbriefs For the love of God … and bacon OAKLAND, CA — What better way to bridge the baseball divide than with bacon? That’s exactly what Jeff Francoeur did when the Royals right fielder had 20 pizzas delivered to fans of the opposing team. The animated Oakland Athletics fans known to mercilessly taunt opposing outfielders were won over, chanting and cheering for Francoeur. The unlikely friendship began last year when Francoeur, intrigued by the group’s “Bacon Tuesday,” tossed the group a baseball wrapped in $100 bill telling them to buy beer or bacon. This year, the A’s fans also received a signed bat with a note: “Right field bleacher crew, keep making bacon.” Francoeur’s surprise puts things in perspective: “Baseball is fun. We can take it too serious sometimes. That right field section are here every
game, they cheer for every [A’s player] … You don’t get to build relationships like that every day.” The Royals’ right fielder learned early on to build relationships, himself a recipient of generosity. Playing for the Atlanta Braves, he and some teammates went out to eat at a Houston steakhouse, incurring a $600 bill. “The waiter came over and said, ‘Someone picked up your tab.’ We were like, ‘Who?’ ” It was pitcher John Smoltz, his former teammate and spiritual mentor. “He said, ‘Just make sure you do that someday 12 years down the road.’ ” He told STV Magazine “Sometimes in this game, you can get so lost in doing things for yourself and being selfish … but you have to remember that it’s God who has allowed you to do that. He’s put you in a great position to give the glory to Him.”
What drives Donald Driver LOS ANGELES, CA — Donald Driver may have found his calling outside the gridiron. As a contestant in Dancing with the Stars, the Green Bay Packers wide receiver has quickly become a fan favourite. With partner Peta Murgatroyd, Driver recently advanced to the semifinals, and is one of the four remaining contestants. While Driver seems to be waltzing through life with a 13year NFL career, a DWTS stint, and a model happy family, life hasn’t always been easy for this football legend. Struggling with poverty in a single parent household, Driver remembers living in a U-haul truck and stealing cars as a kid to survive. “I re-
member looking at my brother and telling him one day that I was gonna make it,” recalled Driver. “I made a promise to myself, and I made a promise to him as well as the rest of my family that I’ll be able to pull us out. And that day came.” Driver got a life-changing phone call from the Green Bay Packers, and the rest is history. While his success involved hard work, he credits God for it all. “He made a way out of no way,” he said. “I know God has blessed me to be here,” he added, citing his family and God as inspiration. “... without (my family) and God, I couldn’t survive. Never give up, regardless of what people say, never give up.”

Church commits to community CAPE CORAL, FL — Instead of a multi-million dollar facility expansion, a Florida church is building a 100,000 square foot park for the public. Cape Christian Fellowship has originally planned to build a 1,700-seat auditorium with a $15 million price tag. But after learning of numerous job losses affecting families in the area, the church changed its course to better reflect their mission. “We were alarmed to learn that 350 children are homeless in our city. Assessing the community’s needs was sobering and led us to turn our attention to outside the walls of our church,” said Cape Christian lead pastor Wes Furlong. “Even though we’ve outgrown our current facility, we have cancelled our plans for a new worship centre. Instead, we are building a park where families can gather, play, or attend concerts and community events. We’re also providing resources to

help families who’ve lost homes or jobs. We are a church that exists for our city.” The park will be built on church property but will be open to the public. Called Fellowship Park, the community park will feature the city’s first amphitheatre, playgrounds, a splash area, pavilion, an athletic field, walking trail, and a zip line. The church also spearheaded a campaign offering comprehensive resources for families combating hunger, homelessness, and poverty. “No city tax dollars will be used for this park and we consider it a generous and much-needed gift to our city,” Steve Pohlman, Cape Coral interim city manager and director of Parks and Recreation told The NewsPress. The church will also handle maintenance costs. They hope to open the first phase (playgrounds, walking trail, splash area, and pavilions) by the end of the year.
NASCAR star races against odds DALLAS, TX — Not too long ago, the future of NASCAR driver Blake Koch looked bleak. The Nationwide series racer lost his primary sponsor Rise Up and Register when ESPN rejected the organization’s ad featuring Koch. ESPN cited “political and religious overtones” although the unaired commercial mentioned no faith or political entities. It looked as if Koch would have to sit out the O’Reilly Auto Parts 300, until a Christian website stepped up to sponsor the 26-year-old. “It shows me how much God has His hand on the situation that He would bring along ChristianCinema.com at just the right time,” says Koch in a statement. The temporary setback was far from Koch’s mind after the race, as he joined

four other NASCAR drivers in a Billy Graham Rapid Response Team tornado cleanup effort. On the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association website, he said “We weren’t NASCAR drivers there. We were there to share the love of Christ.” The tornado survivor ended up accepting Jesus as his Saviour. “His life was changed forever in this one day,” said an excited Koch. “God just [revealed] His power with an 80-somethingyear-old man getting saved. It just goes to show you, it’s never too late.” ChristianCinema. com is spearheading the #KeepBlakeRacing campaign to find Koch a longterm sponsor. Sponsor or no sponsor, Koch remains true to his faith. “The one thing I will not do is deny my faith ...” he told Fox & Friends.

MEMPHIS, TN — When Bill Courtney signed up as a volunteer football coach, he didn’t realize the impact he’d make on a group of inner city youth – enough for the team’s inspiring transformation to win an Academy Award. The 2011 film Undefeated, a documentary about the volunteer coach and his three black players in North Memphis, won Best Documentary Feature at this year’s prestigious Academy Awards. While he’s humbled by the honour, Courtney is nonchalant about his red carpet experience. “I think it’s great, but it doesn’t define us and it cannot define us,” the football coach told Urban Faith. “What needs to define us is the experience that we had together so that when we go on in our lives 20 years from now and we’re raising families, having graduated from college,
and have jobs, that’s what needs to define us – not a moment in time that was captured on film.” Expecting to coach for two weeks, Courtney ended up coaching the underprivileged and underfunded Manassas Tigers for six years, leading them to their first playoff victory. Courtney often prays with the team. “What I wanted the Lord to bless us with was perseverance and selflessness, and character and discipline.” Courtney says he was merely following the example Someone did for him. “I believe Christ lived on this earth and gave His life so that I could be forgiven for the things I do on a daily basis that I’m ashamed of. When I believe that the Ruler of the universe served me, I feel like it’s my responsibility to serve everyone I can. In serving, you then lead,” he explained.
Guns, grief, and grace CHARDON, OH — A mother might feel various emotions for the person who pulled the trigger that killed her son. But none would’ve guessed what one Ohio mother expressed, days after her son was killed in a shooting rampage. “I would tell him I forgive him because, a lot of times, they don’t know what they’re doing,” said Phyllis Ferguson, mother of 16-year-old shooting victim Demetrius Hewlin, in an exclusive interview with ABC News. Seventeen-yearold gunman T.J. Lane opened fire on a group of students at the school cafeteria, killing Hewlin and two other students Russell King Jr., 17, and Daniel Parmetor, 16. Two other students were injured and another was grazed by a bullet. “I taught Demetrius not to live
in the past, to live in today and forgiveness is divine,” said the grief-stricken mother. “God’s grace is new each and every day.” Reports show Lane had a troubled childhood, with both parents charged of domestic violence. He has not been formally charged but prosecutors say he is likely to be tried in an adult court. Describing Lane as an outcast, some students even suggest he was bullied. Taking this into account, Ferguson explained, “Until you’ve walked in another person’s shoes, you don’t know what made him come to this point.” Honouring Hewlin’s wishes, his family has decided to donate his organs. “He will live after his death,” Ferguson added. “For one Demetrius, there’s eight people he can help.”

"Grandma says I'm as cute as a bug. Her bugs must be a lot cuter than ours!"
by Drew Dixon
How can we help teenagers use their cell phones for cultivating community? Perhaps it begins with taking a look at our own relationship with social media and our mobile devices. If you are a parent or a student leader, what kind of relationship with your cell phone are you modeling? Most of us have Facebook, Twitter, and Gmail in our pockets and when we readily run to them at the slightest sign of a dull moment, we communicate to those around us that they are less interesting than people in these other spaces. Additionally, we ought to take a closer look at some of the “one another” passages of the Bible: “Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honour” (Romans 12:10). “... have equal concern for each other” (1 Corinthians 12:25). “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another” (Galatians 5:13). When we are present with sisters, brothers, friends, family, or neighbours we ought to seek to actively serve them in love and to outdo them in showing honour and brotherly affection. Such tasks are impossible when our attention is divided between those we are physically present with and those with whom we are ever-digitally connected with. It’s difficult to love and serve others when our attention is constantly elsewhere. If we don’t ever force ourselves to put up our phones and be available to those around us, we may never be available to them – that would be a tragic message to send to younger generations. Drew Dixon and his lovely wife and daughter live in Alabama where he is the Family Pastor of a church plant. He is an editor at ChristAndPopCulture.com. He has also written for Relevant Magazine, Paste, Think Christian, and Game Church.

I love Facebook, Twitter, and text messaging. I love having instant access to all three on my smart phone – and yet sometimes I want to throw other people’s phones across the room ... or at least confiscate them for a time. Today’s teens have grown up with cell phones and access to social media – most of them don’t remember a time when no one had text s Drew Dixon messaging or a Facebook profile. Thus teens grow up in a world of instant access – one in which hundreds of people are literally competing for their attention everywhere they go. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not that different – I feel naked without my iPhone and I have good friends who I regularly interact with on Facebook and Twitter. I do, however, wonder if some of the ways people in my generation tend to misappropriate social media are magnified in today’s teenagers simply because they have never known a world without instant access to everyone they know. Social media and smart phones are tremendous tools for connection. We needn’t be afraid of technology designed to help people connect. I would hope a smart phone in the hands of a mature Christian would be a catalyst for cultivating community. Herein lies the problem for many teenagers – their ability to grasp the inner workings of technology often moves faster than their spiritual and emotional growth. You might be physically present with these teenagers but they are not emotionally present with you. So how can we help teenagers use their cell phones for cultivating community? How can we help them cultivate a healthy relationship with social media?
Thoughts At 4 a.m. by Phil Callaway I am sick and tired of insomnia. Of the nagging feeling when I wake that ferrets have been wrestling in my pajamas. Folks who study such things tell us that 48 percent of us suffer from sleep disorder (the other 52 percent we call “perky”). I think we need to stay awake until we conjure a cure. And that’s what I’ve done. At 2 a.m. I began compiling a list of 10 tips to help you sleep like a rock – if you wake up feeling like you’ve been under one. 1. Learn your speed limit. True, Leonardo da Vinci and Winston Churchill only slept four hours a night (each), but we mere mortals may require more. I’m told we average 8.1 hours of sleep a night. Of course, the average teenager gets 24.6. 2. Snack more. Ever wonder why you can’t get off the carpet after Christmas dinner? Chemicals in turkey, milk, tuna, soy nuts, chicken, pumpkin seeds, and cheese can cause drowsiness (this was my mother’s casserole recipe). But hide the Twinkies. Avoid Red Bull and chewing coffee
s Phil Callaway beans. 3. Exercise. You sweat less at night if you do more of it during the day. But your body needs three hours to unwind after exercising. Unless you are in your teens. If you are, don’t forget to set your alarm clock
phone or toss it in the sink. Wear a sleep mask if necessary. Remove it before going to work the next day. 5. Move the clock. Worrying about sleep is enough to keep anyone awake. If someone bought you a clock that projects the time on the ceiling, drive over it with a pavement packer. 6. Be consistent. Stick to the same general bedtime and waking time every day as much as possible – even on weekends. When you can, bring your pillow on trips. Leave your bed at home. 7. Take time to wind down. Remember you can’t land a Boeing 747 on a 60 foot runway. Your body needs time and space between a hectic
Don’t forget to set your alarm clock for three o’clock tomorrow afternoon. for three o’clock tomorrow afternoon. 4. Make your sleeping area comfortable. Decrease noise and light in the bedroom as much as is possible. Keep the temperature at about 18 degrees. Turn off your cell
day and bed. So consider a warm bath, a hot shower, prayer, conversation, or a good book before bedtime. 8. Sleep like a baby, don’t act like one. If you get angry about not sleeping, you will not sleep. Don’t go to bed to
do your taxes, figure out your business strategy, or rescue endangered species. Associate your bed with sleeping. 9. Learn to trust. Scripture verses in the middle of the night can turn the worst experience into a good one. David, a charter member of Insomniacs Anonymous, wrote in the Bible, “On my bed I remember [God]” (Psalm 63:6), “I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8). 10. Count your blessings. Should these suggestions fail you, remember even insomnia can be a blessing. I’m serious. Throughout the years I have discovered that though I have little quiet time in my hectic day, I do have the nights. Insomnia has provided me ample time to meditate, pray for others, even time to slow down in a speeded-up world. It’s 4 a.m. now. Time to shut off the computer. And set the alarm clock for tomorrow afternoon. An Unusual Rescue
s Marcia Laycock by Marcia Laycock
I
f we had heard a weather forecast, we might have stayed at home. It was only about 35 below when we headed to town that night years ago, but by the time we came out of a meeting, close to midnight, it had dropped to -65 degrees Celsius. Our truck would not start. Neither would the other vehicles parked outside. As I watched from the warmth of the doorway, my husband and a few friends donned some unusual head gear and hovered over the one truck they thought might rise to the occasion. Their “head gear,” hats woven of warm Alpaca wool, had tall peaks with tassels on the ends and long tapered ear flaps that bobbed with each step. They made the guys look a lot like Santa’s elves. None of them realized how comical they looked as they
scurried around the truck, trying to get it to start. Someone produced a propane torch to heat the oil pan. Someone else produced a tarp to cover the hood. Then we all huddled in the doorway, hoping for success. We cheered when the motor roared to life. As we crammed into the cab for the trip home, the guys left their hats on, still oblivious to how they looked. We had only gone a few miles when we saw a faint light. It burned for a few moments, then died. We leaned forward as it appeared again, directly ahead. Our driver slowed down as we got closer. The dim light flashed one more time and we realized it was a truck in the middle of the road.
We think we’re safe when in reality we might be on the brink of disaster. All of us piled out as we pulled to the side to investigate. The truck door opened and a young woman peered out. Her lips were blue, her bare hands, wrapped around a small kitten, were white with frost bite. She tried to swing
5
Wake Up And Smell The Jerky her legs out, but needed help. When she stood up, her feet, clad only in running shoes, wouldn’t move. As the men lifted her into a warm vehicle, I noticed she looked at them with an odd expression. It wasn’t until later we discovered she thought she was hallucinating. She didn’t expect to be rescued by a band of Santa’s elves! Psalm 118:5 of the Bible says, “In my distress I prayed to the Lord and the Lord answered me and rescued me.” Rescue. In the nick of time. If we hadn’t been on the road that night, that young woman may have died. I don’t know if she prayed, but, in desperate situations, most people do. Unfortunately, most of us don’t recognize we are in a desperate place when we are without God. We depend on things like trucks with heaters, refusing to believe they might break down in the worst places at the worst times. We think we’re safe, we’re okay, when in reality we might be on the brink of disaster. God is in the rescue business and we all need to be rescued. He sent His Son Jesus to save us from crashing on the highway of life. Flag Him down, before it’s too late. define coffee as hot consciousness with cream and sugar. The other day I drank so much that I’m pretty sure I forgot how to blink. For me, the answer is coffee. I usually don’t figure out what the question is until the third or fourth cup. That’s one reason I was pretty excited when I accidentally made a new discovery. The automatic shut-off wasn’t working on my coffee pot and I forgot and left it on all day. When I checked it before bedtime, an entire pot of coffee had been reduced to a layer of tar in the bottom of the pot. It was black and sort of chewy-looking. I sniffed it, more out of curiosity than anything else, and I think it gave me a little bit of a caffeine buzz. That’s when it hit me that I
might have something. What if I peeled it off the bottom of the pot and cut it into plastic-looking strips? Voila! Coffee Jerky! Just think what this could mean to all those heavy-eyed weekday commuters. Instead of sloshing scalding coffee in their laps and all over their nice leather seats, they could just pop out a hunk of coffee jerky. I’m thinking it would be a great way to make a pot of coffee last all day, too. It would take several hours just to get it all out of your molars. Residual caffeine. This discovery might help to keep our entire society more alert!
This discovery might help to keep our entire society more alert! Alertness is a good thing. The Bible’s 1 Thessalonians 5:6 says, “So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded.” First Peter 5:8 also instructs us to “Be self-controlled and alert,” and then tells us why: “Your enemy prowls around like a roaring lion …” It would terrify us if we didn’t have the rest of Scripture to
tell us that God is infinitely more powerful than any enemy. We even have the next verse in the passage to charge us to, “Stand firm in the faith.” There’s also powerful instruction in the verse right before: “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you” (verse 7). Casting all your anxiety on Jesus Christ doesn’t mean you have to slip into a vegetative state. In java jargon, “stay perky.” “Self-controlled and alert,” remember? It’s when we surrender our troubles to Him that we are truly freed to be alert to Christ-centred things – the things that count. It’s better than anything caffeinated yet it won’t keep you up at night. As a matter of fact, giving your anxieties over to Jesus is exactly what you need for a peaceful night’s sleep. Put that in your pot and perk it! Incidentally, I decided last week I should quit drinking coffee. I know it’ll surprise you to find out that I really did. It was one of the worst half hours of my life. Rhonda Rhea is a radio personality and a conference speaker across North America. She is a wife, mother, and author of several fun and fruitful books. The God Of Love by Dr. Charles F. Stanley
G
od never changes. Unless we realize this truth includes His love – which He gives us no matter what – insecurities will rob us of abundant life. Yet many Christians struggle with doubts because they see such convincing “proof” that they’re not lovable. They are bombarded with thoughts like, “Just look at what I’ve done, how I’ve treated people. How could God ever forgive me?” s Dr. Charles F. Stanley The problem is we assume God loves in the same way we do. Our feelings for others continually change, but that’s not the way He operates.
The basis of God's love The Greek word for God’s love is agape, which includes the idea of being “sacrificial and unconditional in nature.” God unselfishly gives Himself to us in order to bring about good in our lives. Just think what life would be like if God’s love were dependent upon behaviour. It would be a spiritual rollercoaster, up one day and down the next. Because no one can live up to God’s perfect standard, a sense of uncertainty and unworthiness would always be lurking. God won’t love you more when you are good and less when you’re bad, because His affections are based not on your worthiness but on His unchanging character.
Understanding divine love The best way to learn about God’s love is to examine how Jesus Christ interacted with people when He lived on earth. I’m going to categorize several Biblical characters so you can identify with them. As you examine each one and observe Jesus’ words and actions, think about how the same unconditional love applies to you. Peter: The Impulsive Responder (Matthew 14, 16, 26) There’s no one like Peter. He was an outspoken, take-charge kind of guy, and in whatever he did, he went full throttle. When Peter saw Jesus walking on water, he stepped overboard in
faith. But sometimes his mouth ran faster than his brain, getting him into trouble. Peter’s greatest failure began at the Last Supper when he refused to listen to the Lord’s warning that the disciples would fall away. Hours after confidently asserting his unending loyalty he denied knowing Jesus – not once, but three times (Mark 14:27-30). Maybe you can identify with Peter. Have you ever made rash statements or jumped into action too quickly? None of these things can disqualify you from being loved by God. Soon after Jesus’ resurrection, He reached out specifically to Peter to begin restoring him. The Bible tells us that when the women went to the tomb, an angel told them, “Go, tell His disciples and Peter” (Mark 16:7). Jesus never stopped loving him. Zaccheus: The Worldly Compromiser (Luke 19:1-10) Since tax collectors were seen as traitors, they weren’t popular in Israel. It was bad enough they collected taxes for the Romans, but many also cheated the Jews by demanding more than they were authorized to. Since Zaccheus was a chief tax collector he was a hated man, yet when Jesus saw him perched in a tree, He called out to him. That’s
None of these things can disqualify you from being loved by God. what God’s love does – it reaches out to draw us into a relationship. It doesn’t matter what we’ve done, or even what we’re currently doing. God doesn’t evaluate our lives to see whether we’re worthy. He simply takes us as we are. Zaccheus wasn’t shamed into salvation; he was won over by Jesus’ gracious acceptance. Have you felt condemnation because of things you’ve done? Although an encounter with God brings our sins to light, His love offers hope. When we receive Him as our Saviour, there is no condemnation. His love frees us to live life for Him. The Woman at the Well: The Moral Failure (John 4:3-30) When Jesus met the Samaritan woman at the well, He guided the conversation toward the answer to her deepest need – God’s unfailing love, unlike the love she’d been looking for in wrong places. After five marriages, she was now living with a man who wasn’t her husband. As a result, she wasn’t accepted by her community and
came to the well in the heat of the day when no one else would be there. When Jesus found her, He revealed her secrets and unveiled her thirsting heart. What’s amazing is how Christ uncovered her sin in a way that didn’t erect barriers. She was so transformed by His love that she went into town and told everyone, inviting them to come meet Him. Have you been trying to fill the empty place in your heart with relationships that never bring satisfaction? God created you for a relationship with Himself. As wonderful as friendships, family, and marriage can be, nothing can take God’s place. Bartimaeus: The Nobody (Mark 10:46-52) Blind beggars were considered “nobodies” in Israel. They might receive charity, but never meaningful attention. One day, as Bartimaeus called out for mercy Jesus stopped, had a conversation with him, and healed his vision. Do you feel like a nobody? Maybe your life seems like an endless cycle of work, TV watching, and sleep. Perhaps you struggle with loneliness or feel forgotten. But God knows exactly where you are and has never taken His eyes off you. His love doesn’t cease because we feel insignificant. The best way to renew hope is to take our eyes off ourselves and turn them to Jesus. When you focus on Him, your sense of self-worth becomes grounded in truth instead of emotions. Christ considered you worth dying for, and He loves you no matter your physical, emotional, or spiritual condition.
It's a matter of faith It’s undeniable that Jesus loves us. Whenever we wallow in our unworthiness and rehearse the reasons He couldn’t possibly love us, we display unbelief. Sometimes we must simply accept His care for us by faith. The more we choose to believe God instead of our feelings, the stronger our certainty of His love. When faith sets us free from these doubts, we’ll experience the joyful life God planned for us. Dr. Charles F. Salvation with Jesus Christ. Ruiz was young when his father died, but God sent a man to fill the void in his heart. “He led me to have a real encounter for the first time with God that I never, ever forgot,” Ruiz says. “That’s when I really became a Christian.” Afterward his life took other turns, but this “helped as a lifeline back.” Cruz’s own transformation was aided by David Wilkerson, a country preacher who boldly shared Jesus’ love to gangsters. “Dave risked his life to introduce me to Jesus Christ. I threatened to kill him and he said to me, ‘You can cut me into a thousand pieces Nicky and every piece will cry out ‘Jesus loves you.’ “I heard hope and life, that Jesus Christ came from Heaven because He loved me,” says Cruz, who spent the next 50 years ministering to thousands in inner cities, prisons, and stadiums. Wilkerson went on to found Teen Challenge. “We believe that the focus should be on the heart/soul as the primary cause of an individual’s behaviour,” says Juan Manigault, Teen Challenge Alberta’s executive director. “Our students are

Imagine being transformed from night into day. That’s the way Nicky Cruz describes his life. As a teenager, Cruz was a hardened gangster. Warlord of Brooklyn’s notorious Mau Mau gang. Feared by the police. A high school dropout with “no concept of love” and only knew evil. Within a few years, though, not only had he received the love of Jesus, but he had enrolled in Bible College and was preaching about Jesus’ love to other gangsters. In May, Edmontonians can hear Cruz’s story firsthand when he comes to West Edmonton Christian Assembly for a Teen Challenge rally. “Drugs are a demon from hell and this is destroying families,” insists Cruz. “When we’re hopeless we must turn to God. Jesus Christ is our hope, our light in the darkness. “We all have a tremendous need in our lives and that is Jesus,” he continues. “We must become addicted to Jesus.” Like Cruz, Lester Ruiz learned to build walls around his heart. “I was unreachable,” says Ruiz who graduated from Teen Challenge in August 2011. He used vices as an escape but found himself trapped instead. “The freedom I looked for in drugs and alcohol had chained me,” he admits. successful because they grow in their spiritual relationship, which … is the basis for all other relationships.” The program teaches participants a set of life skills that includes daily Bible study and prayer time, finding an individual to serve as a mentor and another individual as an accountability partner. A National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) study confirmed 67 percent of the graduates were drug-free seven years after graduating from the program. “Teen Challenge is nothing more than true Christians who are committed with their lives, and trained to help their fellow brothers who are lost in the throes of addiction. It was beautiful to see the staff living their lives out as examples of
what true freedom looked like,” says Ruiz. “What these people had was something I wanted to pass on through my spiritual bloodline. So today, I get to say to my little daughter, ‘This is who my God is.’ ” Ruiz looks forward to new life, and to being a new parent. “I get to be the father that my father wasn’t for me, to break the chain of dysfunction and begin a new legacy,” he says. “I’m changing my whole history and future. “Sometimes me and my wife are just in the car, and the light is red,” he says. “And we just stare at each other and say ‘Can you believe this? Can you believe what we came from and where we are now?’ We just start to break down and give thanks to our God.”

“Services would be provided free of charge, and the physicians would receive no remuneration.” by Robin Taine-Brownell A gap exists in government policies where immigration and healthcare meet – and unbeknownst to many, people are falling through the cracks. “[Refugees] sit in limbo for a period of time as the government processes their application,” explains Jason Fan, South Edmonton Alliance Church’s community centre director.
The
is in!
Until landed-immigrant status is confirmed, refugees do not have access to Canada’s healthcare system. “Refugees are naturally not wealthy enough to seek medical advice, that will come out-of-pocket,” says Dr. Josh Wong, a plastic surgeon who works out of the University of Alberta Hospital and member of SEAC since 2000. “As such, they often wait for simple ailments to turn into potentially life-threatening disasters before seeking any advice.” They are hoping their new outreach centre, Millbourne Community Life Centre, will help fill that need.

“Partnerships with established and reputable organizations is one of the most important features of MCLC,” says Fan, who was recruited to oversee the various community programs SEAC has sponsored for years. A food pantry, income tax programs, and a blood donor clinic are just some of the volunteer-run programs. Working with groups such as the United Way, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the Mill Woods Family Resource Centre allows MCLC to provide reputable programs to the community. Youth drop-ins, as well as spring and summer camps are among the growing list of community resources MCLC is working to provide. A large part of the vision is to establish a free medical clinic for refugees. With a significant immigrant population in the area, SEAC is aware of the need for healthcare within the refugee community. Licensed family practitioners partnering with other health professionals, such as nurses and therapists, will provide refugees access to qualified, multidisciplinary medical help. “Services would be provided free of charge, and the physicians would receive no remuneration. However, they would be required to practice with valid malpractice insurance and licence protection,” says Wong. “As medical staff, we get excited when there’s an opportunity to be intentional with our faith using the skills we are trained in,” he continues. Raised in a Christian home, Wong came to his belief in Jesus at a young age. As a teenager, his faith was reaffirmed in a dramatic way. One day he became
very ill, having contracted a lung infection which complicated his already sensitive asthma. He collapsed in the shower and lay nearly unconscious. “During this experience, the visions of my life went by my eyes quickly and the meeting with my creator God was impending,” Wong vividly recalls. “At this point, I begged the Lord to spare my life on earth because I knew I had not yet fulfilled what I was purposed to do.” After being rescued by his brother, Wong was compelled to live every moment for God. “I decided to live my life from that point on seeking to surrender more and more each day and take up Jesus’ cross and follow Him.” A mission trip to China shaped his desire to pursue a career in medicine. In rural areas where his team travelled, open fires were still the main heating and cooking sources. As a result, burn injuries were common. “My eyes were opened to the power of medicine and the bridge that it built to tell the story of Jesus and His grace,” says Wong. The MCLC clinic will provide a similar opportunity. “We will actively share the gospel of Christ in words when the time is appropriate. “We aim to live in a way that reaches the needy, lost and hungry, broken and homeless so that they receive the love of Christ.” While MCLC opened its doors officially in November 2011, the medical and legal details of running the health clinic are still being worked out. AT A THEATRE NEAR YOU!
Jeff and Sereena Schneider found restoration for their marriage through City South Church, which recently moved to the Cineplex Odeon in South Edmonton Common.
by Elisabeth Handley The lights dim. The curtain goes up. And ... out comes the pastor? Okay, City South Church doesn’t go for all those theatrics, but they do meet in the Cineplex Odeon at South Edmonton Common every Sunday at 10 a.m. And people are loving it. “The theatre staff is great to work with and we have a central location with lots of parking,” says campus pastor Kevin Machado. “It’s easier for people to come, and less traditional than a normal church. It’s easier for people to attend.” The Cineplex Odeon is a new location for the youngish church, which opened its doors in February 2011 originally in an old Celtic hall. Making the move from the hall to the theatre meant less strain on volunteers (setup

and tear down time was drastically decreased) and the church could finally have space for its kids’ ministry. City South Church is a satellite of City Centre Church which meets in an old theatre building, so clearly traditional locations are not a priority. “The thing we’ve found is it doesn’t matter if you’re in an old run down movie theatre in the heart of the city, or a new theatre on the south side, or a Celtic hall, or a grand cathedral, what truly matters is who you are and who you are becoming – as individuals, as a church,” says Machado.
“We’re all just attempting to follow Jesus as best we can, and doing the best with the teachings He gave us.” One woman is learning the teachings of Jesus herself, even as she’s teaching the children in kids’ ministry. Though raised marginally Catholic, Sereena Schneider had not been a churchgoer throughout most of her life when she and her family started attending City South. “One week they needed volunteers in kids’ ministry,” she says. “I wanted to know what my daughter was doing so I volunteered. I didn’t know the Bible or the stories. I was learning myself as I was teaching the kids.” This came at a critical time in her marriage to her husband Jeff. In December of 2006, after about two years of marriage, Jeff quit his job to pursue his dream of starting his own business. This was at the same time their oldest child, Hannah, was born. “Our comfortable lifestyle quickly faded away and we soon became cash-strapped every month, falling further and further into debt. In an attempt to fix the situation, I would regularly put more and more hours into the business,” Jeff says. “My business eventually consumed me. Sereena would do everything around the
“I never knew a church would do something like that”
house. She’d cook, clean, take care of the kids, all on top of working fulltime.” The strain was taking its toll on their marriage. “I spent all of my time working away trying to close the next big deal that would help us get our heads above water,” he says. “We eventually stopped communicating.” Eventually Sereena moved out and the Schneiders were on the brink of divorce. But, they did start attending City South Church together at the invitation of Jeff’s sister. They started seeing a marriage counselor – paid for by the church. “This was unheard of,” says Sereena. “I never knew a church would do something like that. They really take the whole concept of the church family to heart. It’s a real, tangible thing.” The Schneiders discovered their personal issues that complicated their relationship and how to pray and talk about them and keep God’s view of marriage in the forefront. All the while, Sereena’s relationship with Jesus was growing. At a women’s church retreat, a friend explained how inviting Jesus into your life was about believing, accepting, and repenting. “I had always felt like I was missing a part of the puzzle,” she says. “I believe, I’d repented, but had not received.” She prayed to Jesus then to receive Him in her heart as her Saviour. “It was like a huge weight was gone,” she says. “It was mind-blowing.”

by Carolyn Tomlin Are you looking for simple gifts that don’t pinch in your budget, yet provide warm feelings for special friends? If so, the next time you send a present, could one of the following bring a smile to the face of the receiver?
THE WAY WE WERE
If you’re like many people, you have boxes of photos on closet shelves, just waiting to be organized. Instead of putting them in albums, transfer them to a CD for instant viewing on the computer or television. Download a free software program (available at picasa.com) to add a caption, crop, repair discoloured images, and numerous other effects. Plan a family get-together and show pictures from former generations. Don’t forget to make CD copies for those present. Remember them “the way they were” because they were young once, too.
SOME OF MY FAVOURITE THINGS
Aunt Angie’s homemade candy. Grandmother’s bread-and-butter pickles. And mother’s chocolate pie. Food brings people together and keeps them united. If the younger generation regularly asks for a specific recipe that has long been served at family gatherings, put together a cookbook of some of your clan’s favourite things — food wise. Type recipes and place in a spiral binder. Include a bit of information about the person who created the recipe.
HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW?
At this time of year gardens are beginning to burst forth with spring and summer flowers. If you’re like me, you probably have more plants than you can possibly care for. Instead of discarding those bulbs that need dividing, or those rhizomes that have overstepped their boundary, share them with a friend. Save empty plastic containers, punch a couple of holes for drainage and share your plants. Fill with soil, water slightly and cover with foil or paper. A brightly coloured bow provides a cheery greeting. Before you deliver a garden plant, does your friend have a place for an outdoor specimen? If not, deliver fresh-cut flowers arranged in a simple vase.
STRAIGHT FROM THE OVEN
There’s nothing that says it better than something from the oven! Muffins and fresh-baked bread go a long way in welcoming a new neighbour to your community or showing you care. With an emphasis on nutrition, take your basic muffin recipe and substitute half whole wheat flour for the white flour, and try using buttermilk for the liquid. Add a small handful of oats, flax seeds, cranberries or raisins, orange zest, and chopped walnuts. Double the recipe and keep some for yourself and give the others away. You’ll discover working in the kitchen and using the ingredients on hand allows you to use the creativity God intended for you to enjoy.
PAY IT FORWARD
When our children were young, we lived away from our parents. I longed for the help from relatives when we attended an out-of-town meeting — or to simply enjoy a nice restaurant meal without a screaming toddler. But God heard my needs and provided wonderful women who offered to babysit for a few hours and on occasion, for a weekend. As my children are young adults now, I remember those special women. It’s payback time. Is it for you, also? Look around your neighbourhood and church. Do you see tired, overworked parents who need a break? Get to know the family. Invite them to your home for refreshments or a meal. When both you and the parents feel comfortable, offer to babysit for a night. Better yet, provide them with certificates for a free night of their choosing. There are many simple and practical ways to give gifts from the heart to those around you, all you have to do is look around and get creative.

PerkUp A Stepping outside the basket
by Kim Perrone No matter how big or small a picnic you plan, unique details can label it extra-special. Run innovative ideas past family or planning committees ahead of time to make an intimate outdoor occasion or a huge group picnic one for the books!
YUM FACTOR
Out of convenience, many people prepare the same old picnic staples. Get fancy without reinventing the wheel by adding elegant twists to old favourites. Mix pesto into that potato, pasta, or chicken salad. Experiment with fresh herbs and flavoured oils or vinegars. Pre-grill and chop veggies such as asparagus or multi-coloured peppers to add colour and flavour. Change up dips and spreads. Mash avocado into salsa. Mix garlic or chopped nuts into whipped butter. Bean and cheese dip, anyone? If grilling, bring fancy fixings for burgers: precooked bacon, avocado, grilled slivers of zucchini, blue cheese, goat cheese, and sundried tomatoes. For profound new burger recipes, pick up a copy of Burger Parties: Recipes from Sutter Home Winery’s Build a Better Burger Contest by James McNair and Jeffrey Starr (Ten Speed Press). For wider epicurean variety, invite everyone to bring their signature dish for sharing!
Spread out picnic blankets and pillows for a truly relaxed atmosphere, but have tables ready for less flexible guests. If you’re in the market for picnic blankets, choose those with water-resistant backings to counteract wet grass. Have plenty of beverages on hand. Naturally, abundant water is key. Lemonade and iced herbal teas are refreshing choices, as well. Offer a “comfort station” providing sunscreen, a first-aid kit, bug repellant, and water-filled spray bottles for cooling off. Help guests to relax by encouraging silent cell phones. Likewise, video games need not make an entrance. Perhaps post a
Picnic!
light-hearted sign such as, “Unplug! Electronicsfree zone!”
THEMATIC LICENSE
Themes spice up large gatherings. Use food, music, guest attire, and simple props for emphasis. Go international, think fiesta, or hold the ever-popular luau. Honour your family or church group’s nostalgic past with memorabilia. Run a baking contest or burger taste-off. Picnics lend themselves to any children’s party theme. Try a Teddy Bear picnic where guest bears “enjoy” small picnic blankets and tea sets. Hold a photo shoot of kids with their bears. Celebrate Canada begins June 21 and runs 11 days, culminating in Canada Day (July 1st). What a great opportunity for a picnic! Cover baked goods in red and white icing. Ask guests with kids to bring Canadian-themed wagons. Hold a wagon pull race!
EVERYONE’S A WINNER
Outdoor games such as Tug o’ War are classics, and you might not want to omit them. Still, peruse greatgroupgames. com to

find something new for a few attendees on up to more than 20. Pick up Matthew Toone’s Great Games! 175 Games & Activities for Families, Groups, & Children (Mullerhaus Publishing) or visit greatgamesbook. com. If you can’t find something agreeable in this selection, invite more playful people! Offer prizes to game winners. Make award certificates on the computer or purchase prize ribbons. Find silly favours for larger groups at orientaltrading.com, and be sure to check their sale section.
ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE
A picnic offers the concept of plenty, whether in the form of food, friends, or just fresh air and blue sky. Show gratitude for your plenty by remembering to recycle. Leave the area exactly how you found it, if not cleaner. When packing up, offer extra non-perishables to another picnic group or a community food pantry. Be sure to thank everyone who contributed to the day. At some point during the day, give thanks to God either privately or in a group for the day and all it offered.
“There are few things so pleasant as a picnic eaten in perfect comfort,” wrote English novelist W. Somerset Maugham. So true! Make comfort a vital consideration for your picnic.

I’m Sorry … So Sorry Tips to teach kids to right wrongs
to cool down as well as your offer to help analyze the situation.
by Kim Perrone After Michael throws playground sand in David’s face, the apology Michael eventually offers might not be all that convincing – especially if Mom pulls the words “I’m sorry” out of him using threats and consequences. Such forced apologies teach little to the offender and do even less for the victim. How can kids demonstrate true remorse to people they’ve offended? Help them brainstorm opportunities to put time and thought behind their apologies.
WONDERFUL WORDS
If your child can say “I’m sorry” sincerely, that’s terrific. However, those words often fall as flat as a half-hearted “Oops.” Yet words are very effective in expressing remorse if we can draw upon alternate phrases full of honesty and a true desire for reconciliation. Can your child name the emotion he felt upon offending someone? (“I was scared, and sometimes I say things I don’t mean when I feel that way.”) Can he express why his offense was wrong? (“Nobody should speak like I did to someone they love, and I love you, so I’m sorry.”) Was there a reason he flew off the handle? (“I didn’t think you were playing the game fair. But I should have talked about it instead of hurting you.”) Arriving at such reflection might require time
ARTISTIC APOLOGIES
We all know time is at a premium these days. Therefore, taking time to make a peace offering may impart true sincerity. Something as basic as a homemade card will show the doctor your child kicked at his last appointment that your family takes apologies seriously. A giant card made of poster board and left on Mom’s bed can soften the tantrum at the toy store. Imagine Dad’s reaction as he approaches the driveway at the end of the day to see a chalkdesigned message that reads “I’m sorry” for poor behaviour at breakfast.
FIX-IT FAST
Require your child to come up with fixes for the item, trust, or friendship that was broken by their behaviour. Can she help repair a broken item? How can she earn money to replace it? If plans were ruined, help the offender plan a new event. As well, an unrelated good deed can clear the air. Can she clean her sibling’s room? Offer up the last cookie? Make grandma’s bed? Let her friend decide the next two activities on a playdate?
DIGITAL DEEDS
If a picture is worth a thousand words, why not make “sorry” one of them? Take a picture of your child bearing a sad face and a sign that
Henry J. Theune
Accounting & Income Tax
says, “I’m sorry!” Then send it to the person he offended via cell phone or e-mail. If the person your child needs to apologize to lives in your home, switch the desktop wallpaper on their computer to the photo! Help the offender choose and send an e-card. E-Card Mountain has a nice selection of free apology cards at ecardmountain.com.
ACT IT OUT
Of course, learning to apologize is another area where children learn from example. How do you and your spouse apologize after a spat? Write an apology note on the bathroom mirror in lipstick or shaving cream. Roll up a note and tie it on the family pet’s collar. Leave flowers on a pillow. Cook a favourite meal or order it in. Leave love notes on the car’s steering wheel, on a workbench, or stuck to a favourite snack. Ask your child if he feels better after apologizing. Explain we all make mistakes – apologies are a way to fix those errors in judgment.

How to target
the best
by Emily T. Wierenga and Lailani Mendoza
Summer Camp
3. Are there any physical, intellectual, or social limitations that should be considered? 4. What kind of emphasis will your child profit from most? For example, will he/she benefit more from social interaction, or from opportunities to reflect and be quiet? 5. What are you, as a parent, hoping to see happen in your child’s life as a result of this week? With these answers in mind, you’re well on your way to finding a camp suited to your offspring.
for your kids
It’s that time of year again. The sky is baby blue, the flowers are blooming, and kids are itching for summer vacation. They’re longing to sleep in, laze around the house, play till they collapse, and eat nothing but marshmallows and cotton candy. Parents, on the other hand, may need a break — and what better way than sending the wild ones to summer camp? Considering the benefits, which may include valuable learning experiences, the cost is more than affordable. The key to happy camping is finding a place that meets your kids’ needs, be they spiritual, physical, emotional or material. Let the following suggestions be your guide. WHO’S YOUR CAMPER? Take some time to get to know your children, if you haven’t already. Pull out some specific questions, and dig up the answers, by way of a date to the donut shop, a movie night, or just sitting around the dinner table. The National Camp Association Inc. (NCA) suggests parents consider the following questions: 1. What does your child want to gain from the camp experience? 2. What are the special interests that your child wants to explore?
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION Sorry, location isn’t everything! Rather than pouring your energy into finding a camp that’s closest – or farthest! – away from home, it’s important to concentrate on the camp’s environment, security, medical facilities, and accessibility. The Internet offers some resources to help narrow down your choices. Alberta Camping Association (albertacamping.com) provides a list of accredited campsites in the province with a searchable directory. For those concentrating on nurturing their faith, Christian Camping International Canada (cci-canada.ca) publishes a guide advertising more than 200 camps and conferences across the country. “Keep in mind ... if your child is having a good experience, distance will not make a great deal of
difference,” urges the NCA. SOCIAL GRACES If your main desire is for your children to focus on relationships, not only socially but spiritually, places like Gull Lake Centre, situated in Lacombe, AB, Camp Nakamun near Busby, AB, or Torch Trail Bible Camp in Choiceland, SK, are a few of many Christian options to consider. Comments Howard Gitzel, Nakamun’s director, “Many kids ... want to have faith and hope, and it can be found here. This is where Biblical values are taught, lived, and modeled. It has a tremendous impact.” The focus of such camps is to show God’s love through counselling and leadership. “It all comes down to staff training,” says Dustin Carleton. “We encourage staff to spend time with kids, one on one, and learn who they are. Our goal is to provide a safe environment for them.” PROGRAMMED TO PLEASE Some camps offer a variety of programs, while others emphasize one activity.
The latter are often referred to as Specialty Camps, geared towards providing an intensive experience in a single area such as hockey, gymnastics, sailing or wilderness. More traditional camps usually provide a broad range of pursuits with well-developed retreat centres, pools, soccer fields, basketball and volleyball courts, and arts and crafts areas. There are also camps that specialize in catering to people with special needs. An example is Rehoboth Camp Ministry that offers up to four weeks of camp for people with disabilities. To save on costs, consider camps that offer discounts for early registration. Financial assistance is also available from organizations like the Tim Hor ton’s Foundation or the President’s Choice Children’s Charity. Reach the Rainbow provides subsidies for developmentally disabled campers. In truth, while all of these factors are certainly important, most camps strive ultimately to nurture their campers with love and care, which is all that really matters.

Wellness Saving On Supper
t u o h t i W Skimping
On Nutrition by Beth Bence Reinke, MS, RD Sticker shock at the grocery checkout is commonplace these days. As the cashier drags your items across the scanner — blip, blip, blip — do you feel your heart rate rising as you wait for the total? Unfortunately, food is one of those things you can’t cut out. We all have to eat! As food prices continue to rise, how can you prepare healthy meals without breaking the bank? Try these thrifty strategies for eating well without breaking your budget.
PLAN, PLAN, PLAN
This is the single most important strategy. Even if you don’t consider yourself an organized person, you can do it! Put a pocket folder in a kitchen drawer or cupboard containing all of your planning stuff: coupons, supermarket circulars, and recipes you want to try. First of all, write a menu. Spend 20 minutes each week planning your meals. Write down your supper menus, then make a list of breakfast and lunch foods to keep on hand. Next, make a grocery list, checking the fridge and cupboards as you jot
down items. Read the ads. Scrutinize store circulars. Plan your meals around what’s on sale, especially if there are buy-one-get-one-free items to take advantage of. Shop with your list and try to buy only what’s on the list.
Buy store brands. Cheaper generic products are often just as good as costly name brands — your family probably won’t be able to taste the difference.
MODIFY YOUR MENU
Get creative in the kitchen. Make your own whole grain bread. Brew your own coffee in the morning instead of stopping at a high-priced coffee shop. Skip individually packaged snack foods. Instead, buy large bags of pretzels, unsweetened cereal, dried fruits, and nuts and make your own healthy snack mix. Portion it out into small, zippered plastic bags. Avoid precut veggies and bagged salads. Not only do they cost more, but they lose nutrients because cut areas are exposed to air. Buy whole fruits and vegetables, then wash and cut just before use. Can or freeze. Buy fruits and vegetables when they’re in season, when prices are lowest. Can or freeze some for the rest of the year. Get out that green thumb and grow your own. For the freshest produce around, cultivate a vegetable garden in the summer or a few rows of spinach in the fall. No space? Try growing tomatoes, peppers, and herbs in pots. High food prices are here to stay, but you can still save money and eat healthy. Start small, with one or two changes in how you plan, shop, cook, and eat. Then add a few more. You CAN save money without skimping on nutrition!
Ouch! This might be a toughie. But if you’re serious about saving money, you might need to change the foods you buy and how you cook. Cook from scratch. Skip convenience foods, which are expensive and often contain loads of salt, sugar, fat, and preservatives. Buy single ingredients like meats, produce, and whole grains. Use less meat and go vegetarian a couple meals a week. Try eggs or beans as your protein source. Eggs contain the best quality protein around. Beans, high in soluble fibre and nutrients, can be substituted for meat in many casserole, stew, or soup recipes. Instead of pop or other high-priced sugary drinks, buy tea bags and brew homemade iced or hot tea, which is full of health-promoting antioxidants. Don’t forget to drink water! It’s cheaper in the long run to install a reverse osmosis filter at your kitchen sink and skip the bottled kind. Avoid junk food. Foods like chips, candy, and doughnuts are a nutritional zero. Buy nutrient-dense foods instead. Splurge on antioxidant-rich dark chocolate as a treat.
BE FRUGAL
Use coupons. Clip coupons from newspapers and check websites like save.ca to choose coupons for things you normally buy and have them mailed to your door.

Business
At 23, Iris Liang had everything going for her. The Cornell University grad had landed a soughtafter job as financial analyst at a major investment bank in New York. She was asked to consider moving to help start an office in Asia. But looking down at Park Avenue, her mind was on something far away. After previously working with a microfinance organization in India, it became apparent her calling was serving the poor. “I went into banking already having a desire and a passion for economic development,” explains Liang. She went into investment banking “to make the money, get the credibility, and to get the skills.”
photos courtesy Iris Liang
Iris Liang went from big banking to micro-business with Videre
“But if God called me to this, then I need to create a room for Him to work.” So with nothing lined up – and at the height of the 2008 recession – Liang quit her job. Helping the poor is Liang’s passion, but it wasn’t always. The summer between her freshman and sophomore year, she lived on campus. At a party one night, a deep sense of loneliness permeated despite being surrounded by people. It all seemed meaningless. As a storm raged outside, she began to cry. Liang grabbed an umbrella and ran in the rain to a footbridge by a waterfall. Alone and desperate, she cried out to God. “I don’t know if You’re there or if You’re even real, but I know I’m not the person You want me to be. I’m not the person I want to be. I’m miserable. So what do I do? What do You want me to do?” In the stillness, God spoke to her heart: “Be quiet and know that I’m here.” “The moment I became a believer was on that bridge,” she says. “When people ask me ‘How do you
know there is a God? How do you know Jesus?’ I can point back to that experience and say He spoke to me and He is real. “It’s from that point on that I began to grow a heart for the poor.” After leaving Wall Street, she met two businessmen wanting to start a Christian microfinance organization. They asked Liang to launch it. She moved to Dallas, Texas, and Videre was born. Videre is a nonprofit equipping entrepreneurs through training and microfinance to run financially and spiritually impactful businesses. “Originally, the idea was to begin a more traditional microfinance model,” says Liang. But after conducting research in Sudan, she discovered two crucial things: not everyone has an entrepreneurial disposition, and a high repayment rate doesn’t always equate to success (in some cultures, instead of being shamed, people borrow money to repay a loan). Liang and Videre’s board came up with a better plan – a three-phase screening program. First is Biblical business training. From the outset, Videre has placed the Gospel at the forefront. “Not only do we have to vet for entrepreneurs, we have to put the Gospel first,” says Liang. Second phase is creating business plans that include Kingdom-impact strategies, such as praying with customers or using profits to help the needy. “Videre forces the entrepreneurs to really analyze their business and/or business plan … something many entrepreneurs in this area have never done,” said Robert Prather, president of Vision Research Organization, an equity research firm. Prather travelled to Ghana twice as a volunteer. “Budgeting, forecasting, role playing, business plan competitions, studying what God’s Word has to say about business – these all help equip the entrepreneurs to be ready to receive a loan.” In the final phase participants receive loans and implement strategies. Only those showing
“I came back from Ghana and literally had 12 days to raise $15,000.”
business aptitude and successfully completing all three phases receive a loan. Simon, a mobile pharmacist, is one of Videre’s recent grads. “Before entering our program, he would get on his bicycle every morning at 4 a.m., strap his medicine in the back of his bike, and start pedalling to different villages. He could only go to four villages for the entire day.” Simon bought a motorbike and more medicine with the loan, expanding to 10 villages. He shows the medicine to customers, saying “This might be able to cure you physically; what you really need is the healing of Jesus Christ for your souls.” Slowly Simon built relationships with his Muslim clients, and eventually invited customers to a Christian wedding. “These people … went back to Simon and said, ‘Will you come back to our village and help us plant a church?’ ” “The results seen in the lives of the past graduates are overwhelmingly encouraging,” says Abukari Yakubu, Bible Church of Africa’s regional director and Videre’s partner. “A lot of them, especially the women, now live dignified lives as they no longer depend on their husbands for every need. “Through their businesses we’ve seen they’re able to take care of their families’ needs, especially their children in schools,” he adds. Liang has seen God’s faithfulness in this journey. “The first class of entrepreneurs that we had in Ghana, we had 13 entrepreneurs waiting for their loans. I came back from Ghana and literally had 12 days to raise $15,000. So we prayed, and prayed … it came in just two days before I was supposed to go back to Ghana. “I think God is never late, but He is rarely early for His own glory. And I think that builds faithfulness.” Ultimately, faithfulness to God is what Liang wants for Videre. “Jesus didn’t die for organizations and businesses – He died for people. So at the end of the day, it has to be our relationship with Jesus that’s first, then we’ll know everything else will follow. In the middle of all the craziness and busyness of trying to get everything started, it’s gotta be about abiding.” Videre is looking to partner with churches with existing development projects abroad and business professionals wishing to be volunteer coaches on short-term trips. For info, contact iliang@videre.org.

Feeling kinda bushed?
He hid in the wilds of the outback, surviving off nuts, berries, and wallabies. Why? He was Australia’s most wanted fugitive. Now, after almost seven years, Malcolm Naden has been captured. He’s described as being “in reasonable health, but very tired.” All he could say was, “Thank God it’s over. I’ve had enough.” Obviously being on the run for so long took a major toll. Naden was so bushed when police bundled him into a truck he joked, “This beats walking.” Although not chased by cops, many people feel like they’re always on the run. Whether working for a
living, getting a diploma, or raising a family it’s easy to feel exhausted. Add to that caring for an aging parent, putting food on the table, or dealing with an illness and life can be completely overwhelming. Did you know the living God offers to help you through whatever you’re facing? “The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary … He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak” (Isaiah 40:28-29). In fact, the Bible does go on to describe how God “will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint” (Jeremiah 31:25). But here’s the kicker: you need to ask God to help you. Some people don’t know to and others are too proud to. Unfortunately He resists the proud. Thankfully He gives grace to people who humble themselves and admit they need help (James 4:6). When you do He not only refreshes you and renews your
strength, His Holy Spirit will come to live inside you and help you from that day forward. He’s referred to in the Bible as the Helper (John 14:26), Someone who promises to never leave us to deal with life’s burdens on our own. In the Bible, Jesus tells us “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Are you ready to surrender your life to Him? Pray this prayer from your heart: Dear Jesus, I believe You are the Son of God who died – and rose again – for my sins. Thank you for promising to never leave me and for providing me with the help and strength to overcome life’s struggles. Please forgive me for the sinful things I have said and done! Fill me with Your Spirit so I may have a new life with You now and for eternity in Heaven. In Your Name I pray, Amen

Relationships Keeping the Peace by Dr. Greg Smalley All couples will face making decisions during their married life. Some issues involve easy decisions like who handles the remote control or where to eat dinner. Others may require careful consideration because they involve important issues. Career choices, child care, and major investments can fall under this category. As you and your spouse face significant choices, it’s important to have a method of decision making which allows you to remain in harmony. In other words, a way to help create a situation where peace is kept in the midst of negotiation. Having a system can also help guard against a major harmony roadblock: manipulation. One couple saw the negative effects of manipulation when they were buying life insurance. Despite a great sales pitch, a salesman was unable to convince the couple to purchase his policy. “I absolutely don’t want to pressure you into a decision,” he proclaimed while walking towards the door. “Please sleep on it tonight, and if you wake up in the morning, let me know what you’ve decided.” As this couple found out, being manipulated is not a

home and informed Erin that I was dropping the class! Unfortunately, Erin didn’t agree and a major argument erupted. The “negotiation” might have lasted longer except our two-year-old daughter, Taylor, interceded. “That’s enough guys!” she yelled, and walloped me on the backside with a wooden spoon. The shock of being reprimanded by a two-yearold caused us to double over with laughter. Once the tense moment ended, Erin and I were able to use the “Pro and Con” list to make a wise decision regarding my class. First, after dividing a piece of paper into a “pro” and “con”

side, we started brainstorming why dropping the class would be a poor decision. We repeated the same process for the pro side – listing any reason why dropping the class would be a good choice. It’s important when brainstorming to keep from evaluating the reasons until you’ve recorded every idea. Our next step was to evaluate each “pro” and
“con” and tease out the more relevant or important ones. Finally, when all the important factors were highlighted, we discussed what seemed like the best decision. Although I wasn’t thrilled, the wise choice was to remain in the class. Regardless of whether I passed or failed the class (amazingly, I ended up with an “A”), the main issue was that we agreed that our decision was the best choice. If a choice is not obvious or agreed upon, then continue listing additional pros and cons. You might need to take a break or show the list to a neutral third party for advice. Remember the encouragement King Solomon gave in the Bible, “But a wise man is he who listens to counsel” (Proverbs 12:15). Using the “Pro and Con” list allowed Erin and I to stay in harmony through a major disagreement. As you and your spouse negotiate important decisions, I encourage you to use a method to help keep the peace. God Before Golf

golf game, he and Amy place a high priority on giving back to their community. They are heavily involved with Time of Grace, a Christian outreach media ministry, as well as the MACC Fund (Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer, Inc.) and Blessings in a Backpack, a program feeding hungry children on the weekends. “Being able to play golf for millions of dollars doesn’t mean I can buy a bigger house or boat,” he says. “It means I have a responsibility to care for others.” It’s a responsibility Wilson gladly embraces — even if it means he lacks the star power of Tiger or Mickelson. “I certainly want to get some credit for what I’ve done. But as Christians, we’re told to be humble,” he says. “And that’s probably the best way. It’s a good reminder when I go out and people don’t recognize me for my golf that it’s not what I want to be ultimately known for.”
“Jesus gives me peace knowing there’s something so much better than this world” from Wilson’s love of golf, but of Jesus Christ. Raised and educated in a Christian home and school, he chose to pursue a personal relationship with God after college. “Jesus gives me peace knowing there’s something so much better than this world, and that is to live with Him in Heaven when it’s all over,” he tells Living Light News. “He loves us, He cries with us when things aren’t going our way.” At the moment, things are certainly going Wilson’s way. Since the Honda Classic, he has claimed victory at the 2009 Mayakoba Golf Classic, the 2011 Sony

Mark Wilson may be the best PGA golfer you’ve never heard of. And he’s okay with that. The Menomonee Falls, Wis. native currently cusps at eighth on the coveted Ryder Cup standings and is ranked the 13th-best golfer in the U.S. That’s right behind hotshots like Steve Stricker, Tiger Woods, and Phil Mickelson — coincidentally, the only golfers to win more tournaments than Wilson since 2007. He’s driven and putted his way to nine professional victories (five on the PGA tour) while earning nearly $13 million. Yet the 37-year-old Wilson can blend into a crowd of golf fans unnoticed. At 5-8 and 150 pounds, he’s easy to overlook. Who would guess he had an average driving distance of 276.7 yards? “I’ve learned at all different levels. I didn’t have immediate success at any level, whether junior golf, amateur, pro golf,” he says. “I learn once I get into the arena.” It’s an arena Wilson knows well. He picked up his first club at age two with encouragement from his dad, himself a scratch golfer. A few years later, when Wilson wanted to work on his bunker game, his father offered to let him build a backyard sand trap. All young Wilson had to provide was the labour. He immediately grabbed a shovel, called his dad’s bluff, and started digging. He got his sand trap. Golfing success soon followed. At 14, Wilson won the Wisconsin state high school boys’ individual title by finishing with a three-underpar 70. His efforts — the first time he had ever shot under par — also earned his high school the team championship. Suddenly, people knew him. “Seniors [at school] would say, ‘Hey that’s the golfer guy,’ ” Wilson remembers. “That was a lot of fun.” Then again, so were numbers. Wilson majored in mathematics at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, graduating with a 3.7 GPA and considering a career as an actuary. Yet the pull of golf was too strong, and he turned pro in 1997, the same year he completed his degree. After making it to Q-school in 2002, Wilson earned a 2003 PGA Tour Card. But the going was slow; he only had six top-10 finishes in his first four years. Wilson soldiered on, a trait his college golf
coach has long praised. “Perfect commitment is more important than perfect technique,” Devon Brouse told GolfWeek. “Mark has the work ethic. He will outwork everyone.” That he did. By March 2007, Wilson stood on the brink of PGA big time when victory at the renowned Honda Classic looked certain. Then, the unthinkable happened. Wilson called a two-stroke penalty on himself after his caddie told another player what club he had used — an official no-no. Those lost strokes pushed him into a dramatic four-way playoff. Yet Wilson still won that Classic (his first PGA victory) quickly earning him nods of appreciation for his integrity as well as his swing. “I truly believed if [the penalty situation] hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t have won the tournament,” he told the Golf Channel. That belief in doing the right thing stems not only

something doesn’t ring true, I can relay my faith through actions. It’s been a great honour to be a Christian playing a Christian.” Brown has been allowed some creative direction on Bennett. “It’s a comedy, so the comedy comes first. [But] if there’s something that dishonours God … I will speak up. They’re open to my thoughts on the character.” As are the fans. “The beauty of Shirley is that she’s a Christian, but she’s flawed … It’s not a ‘holier than thou’ presentation. She’s growing in her tolerance and love of other cultures and people. It’s beautiful that Shirley’s becoming a less judgmental person.” Brown confides acting is usually more work than glamour. “I … auditioned three times [for Community],” she points out. “I’m at work by 5:30 a.m., we work 14 to 16 hour days. Every episode takes about five days or more. You do what you have to do, it’s your job — but it’s not easy.” And the long days affect every aspect of life. “You squeeze in what you can when you can,” the 40-year-old states. “I haven’t had an active gym life in how long? I just don’t have the time. Its nine months out of the year that you sacrifice, and it’s all about work. When you go into hiatus over the summer you can see friends, go to the gym.” Currently single, Brown jokes she could not bring anything living into her life right now. But she is happy with her choices. “I have an honourable career. There’s nothing I’ve done in this industry that I couldn’t yell from the mountaintops. There’s nothing I would change except to pursue it quicker — I wish I would have hit the ground running when I got here after college. But it still worked out. “I’ve been very blessed.”
“I never want to play a role that would lead someone astray.”

“Everyone has these stars in their eyes about Hollywood, [but] it’s hard, long work. It’s a job,” says Yvette Nicole Brown, one of the stars of the off-beat fan fave comedy Community. In its third season, Brown plays Shirley Bennet, a divorced mom attending Greendale Community College to further her bakery marketing skills and who deals with “a lot of flawed people finding their way through life with each other,” she explains. Music launched the career of this former Ohioan from East Cleveland. As a teen, Brown was signed to Motown Records, singing on The East Coast Family Vol.1 album and appearing on MTV, Showtime at the Apollo, VH1, and BET. After acquiring a degree from the University of Akron, she moved to Los Angeles and toured in a gospel play. Commercials followed, but Brown notes “Commercials don’t count as credits when you’re acting.” Her first credit was a surprise — two episodes on Girlfriends. “That was the hand of God, and not the norm,” Brown stresses. “I had gotten dropped by an agent in December, and sent a postcard to the casting director in March.” With no credits and no agent, Brown was hired anyway. From there, her characters have graced House, Malcolm in the Middle, Boston Legal, Entourage, The Office, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Two and a Half Men, 7th Heaven, Til Death, Rules of Engagement, That’s So Raven, Drake and Josh, and That ’70s Show. Movie credits have included Little Black Book, The Island, Dreamgirls, Meet Dave, and Tropic Thunder. As fun as it looks, Brown thinks acting is tough. “It’s a lot of technical aspects. You have to be completely in the character, stay in the moment with [other actors] … keep all the balls in the air. I think people would be shocked … it’s not easy to be in a room with 100 people and cry when
you need to cry. When they say ‘action’ … you need to deliver. I strive every day to get better.” She’s had the opportunity to work with numerous stars, but her favourite? “Henry Winkler,” Brown confides. “He’s a very kind man. Maybe the kindest man I’ve encountered in this industry. He’s never met a stranger. He makes you feel like you’ve been seen. And that’s a beautiful gift to give to strangers and friends alike. If I could put him in my pocket and carry him everywhere, I would!” she laughs. Her current role allows her a unique venue — character Shirley Bennett is a Christian, just like Brown herself. “I think she’s an honest portrayal,” says Brown, who is known for being just as bubbly as her character. “She’s a little silly — it’s a silly show. Every religion is put under a microscope … Because she’s weak, the beauty of Christ gets to be shown.” Brown’s own Christian faith was fostered young. She and her older brother were strongly influenced by an aunt who was a pastor and the gospel music played at home by their mother. “I’ve always believed in God. [But] by the time I was 12, it was a sincere decision. I knew it was me making the decision,” Brown reminisces. “Every decision I make is in line with what God would have me to do. Am I showing God in this situation? Would God be pleased by this? I don’t always make the mark. [But] it’s not difficult for me, because it’s my compass,” she asserts. “It helps me pick the roles I do, the clothes I wear on the red carpet. I couldn’t imagine navigating this industry without a measure of faith.” And it does affect Brown’s choices. “I turn down roles all the time. If it’s not something in line with what God would have me do, I don’t go in for the audition. It either lines up with what God wants me to do, or it doesn’t. I never want to play a role that would lead someone astray.” Brown finds her character on Community a good fit. “I’ve been able to bring my faith to the set, to the role. If

From their first Dove Award nomination as New Artist of the Year in 2002 to their 2010 Dove Award for the album Christ Has Come, Big Daddy Weave has been, and continues to be, one of the 10 most played artists in Christian radio. Their eighth studio album, Love Come to Life, lines up to ensure continued radio presence with its 12 hook-heavy pop worship tracks – a project as good as, or better than, those previous. Front man Mike Weaver’s honest songwriting and inimitable vocals are once again front and centre, covering life challenges as real as longing and struggle, all the way to breakthrough and gratitude. There’s plenty of brightly pulsating keys and appealing vocal acrobatics, per usual (“Jesus Move” and the mildly confrontational “If You Died Tonight”), and several tracks are thick with sound and heavy guitar riffs (the pop worship of “Magnificent God” and the harddriving “Give My Life Away”). The songs, while very similar to one another in structure, do contain moments of special interest (the stately chords of “Stay” and the emotional punch of warm ballad “Redeemed”). For the most part, Big Daddy Weave is simply improving on what they have done well for 12 years: passionate pop worship. Not many do it better.
BRITT NICOLE Gold brittnicole.com Review by Josh McConnell When Brit Nicole debuted on the scene in 2007, she made quite the splash. Say It was very relevant for its time, with strong production values and catchy pop tunes comparable to mainstream radio. Now after a three-year break since her sophomore studio album, Nicole has recently released her third effort. Titled Gold, the 11-track disc finds Nicole a little older and more mature but also tries to discover her current sound. The album seem to be influenced by a variety of sources. The title track is upbeat, poppy, and similar to a Demi Lovato tune. The more aggressive “Ready or Not” and “Amazing Life” feels inspired by Katy Perry or Jessie J with their computerized effects and club inspired beats. “Breakthrough” even tosses in some dubstep influences, which has gained popularity recently. When the songs are not upbeat they feel a little Kelly Clarkson-esque. Though she may not be as current as in the past when compared to mainstream radio, the overtly Christian lyrics and catchy melodies make Gold a welcomed addition to youth groups and Christian music fans.
FIREFLIGHT Now fireflightrock.com Review by Josh McConnell When Fireflight first debuted in 2006, many wrote the Florida-based band off as simply a Christian music response to the girl-fronted alternative rock act Paramore. What the naysayers did not anticipate was that Fireflight would still be pumping out new albums six years later.

. Simply titled Now, the fourth effort from Fireflight has already been their fastest selling to date. With 10 new tracks, the album seems to be more rhythmic in nature, thanks to the addition of a new drummer. However, the album is still an extension of past Fireflight music, which means soaring guitars, heavy distortion, and semi-aggressive female vocals. One cannot help but compare the band to fellow rock groups Flyleaf and Paramore. Nonetheless, the head-banging anthems beg for a live performance. Unfortunately, some may find repetition plagues the album. The songs may be fun, but the artists didn’t push any musical or lyrical boundaries despite being very open about their faith. Nonetheless, fans of Fireflight should be excited to have more material from the band they love. If you enjoyed their past releases, consider picking up Now.
JIMMY NEEDHAM Clear the Stage jimmyneedham.com Review by Kevan Breitinger Jimmy Needham’s fifth studio album is his most personal yet, shaped by a number of lifealtering events: his marriage, several miscarriages, and the birth of his daughter, all of which he says have led him to “an expanding view of Christ.” Many of the 10 tracks are pop, but this is pop with soul, fierce passion, and fortunately, the occasional dose of funk. Opener “I Will Find You” pairs him up with the rapid-fire testimony of rapper LeCrae, and the soulful croon and electric keys of “Arrows” quickly bring Stevie Wonder to mind. A must-mention is “Stay,” a duet between Needham and Lizi Bailey that hums with taut intensity. Needham has always been good at wringing emotion from his heartfelt lyrics, here traveling easily from serious (“If I Ever Needed Grace”) to joyful (the lilting “Daddy’s Baby Girl.”) His sincerity is palpable on the encouraging track “In The Middle,” written for his wife following news of a miscarriage. When the orientation is vertical, his passion is equally present; “The Only One” is pure Jimmy, soulful and tightly focused. The closing title track uses tenderly evocative strings and keys to drive the point home: “worship is more than a song.” Clear The Stage is Jimmy Needham keepin’ it real, and nobody does it better.
NEWWORLDSON Rebel Transmission newworldson.com Review by Kevan Breitinger Award-winning Canadian pop band Newworldson enjoys a well-deserved reputation as one of CCM’s most creative bands with great live shows. Their third national release, Rebel Transmission, showcases their many music influences, everything from pop to gospel, country, jazz, and blues. Definitely fresh. Old school rock changes show up all over the album, from the industrial opener “Radio Ghost Town,” to the bouncy “Homeless Child,” both enhanced greatly by doo-wop background vocals, perfectly matched to the songs’ movements. Nicely done. The band channels Bruno Mars with slow pop track “Learning to Be The Light,” while “5,6,7,8” is straight-up pop fun, featuring the work

THOUSAND FOOT KRUTCH The End is Where We Begin thousandfootkrutch.com Review by Josh McConnell The Internet and digitization of media are revolutionizing the music industry. Because of this, major record label backing isn’t as crucial as it once was. Many established acts choose to go independent as a result. After much success with Tooth & Nail Records, Thousand Foot Krutch is the latest band to move independent. Funded by fans through Kickstarter.com, the band has released The End Is Where We Begin. With no label to report to, Thousand Foot Krutch is returning to their roots for this effort. Though the album continues their trend of grit, aggressiveness, and arena anthems, songs such as “Light Up The Sky” and “I Get Wicked” returns to the rap of early days (remember “Unbelievable”?). But if you’re a fan of the melodic Thousand Foot Krutch, there are plenty of tunes for you to sing along with as well, such as “Be Somebody.” Think of it like a Jekyll and Hyde scenario. With tasty metal guitar licks, punchy aggressive rock and a musical variation that should appease all fans, it’s obvious the floodgates have been lifted for The End Is Where We Begin. Thousand Foot Krutch has reinvented themselves. Go pick this one up on iTunes.
ALL SONS & DAUGHTERS Season One allsonsanddaughters.com Review by Kevan Breitinger Tennessee-based worship duo Leslie Jordan and David Leonard started writing songs together in 2009, releasing two separate EPs in six months. Last year, the duo signed with Integrity Music and combined those EPs, with the inclusion of two additional songs, to form their first full-length record, Season One. But what you really need to know is that Season One contains 15 of the freshest poetic worship songs I’ve heard in a while, reminiscent in style to The Civil Wars. Bono famously said, “Music can change the world because it can change people.” That’s a tall order, but if there are songs capable of that, these are some of them. Delicate instrumentation yet powerful execution, tight vocal harmonies, creative arrangements, and honest lyrics – All Sons & Daughters bring the full package. Posing the vital question of whether God can love us in spite of ourselves, the passion-drenched “Spirit Speak” and vertically explosive “Oh Our Lord” will pull you to your knees, literally or metaphorically. The line-up is satisfyingly diverse, moving from hushed opener “Alive” to the exuberant rocker “Let It Shine” with ease. There’s not a clunker in the bunch, but standouts include tender ballad “Brokenness Aside” (I am a sinner/if it’s not one thing it’s another”) and the brilliant closer “Your Love Is All Around.” Oh, who am I kidding? The entire album burns with power, you’d be crazy not to get it.

of guest artists, the critically acclaimed Chops Horns (Alicia Keys, The Police, The Rolling Stones). Standout track “Old Time Religion” mixes R&B and doo-wop to argue for the relevancy of the gospel, building into an irresistible groove. “Sweet Grace” goes a little bit country, as does the string-rich stately ballad “Southern Cross.” I loved the sweet guitar licks on gospel rock track “Son of Man,” and they bring in da funk on the jazz-tinged closer, “Shake Holy Spirit,” ’70s-style. If you like it fresh, you won’t want to miss Rebel Transmission.

– especially with humans. Things change when a young boy named Shawn moves into the house to improve his health in the country air as he deals with a serious illness. A regrettable occurrence on a borrowing trip leads Shawn to discover Arrietty. Reluctantly, she forms a relationship with a human – the intimidating figure she’s been taught to fear, as all borrowers do. When the housekeeper discovers Shawn’s sudden interest in peeking under the floorboards, she’s relentless in discovering the little people and stamping them out. Arrietty finds her world turned upside down and must seek help in places she never thought she would in order to save her family. The Secret World Of Arrietty showcases the beauty of the environment. The beautiful depictions of nature throughout the movie add much to its overwhelmingly visual qualities. There is a strong moral worldview, with elements throughout extolling the importance of friendship and family. The theme of family is a main one, as Arrietty is shown to rely on her family and respect her parents. Disobedience is not tolerated, and when Arrietty disobeys her parents and goes
to see Shawn, there are consequences for her. Originated by Studio Ghibli, The Secret World Of Arrietty was originally released in Japan in 2010, and became the highest grossing film for the entire year. The Disney English-dubbed version, releasing May 22, will be sure to enjoy success with child and adult audiences everywhere.

The Secret World Of Arrietty is a Japanese animated movie dubbed into English about tiny people living under the floorboards of an old house. It’s a visually engaging film with a compelling story of friendship and family. Based on the 1950s children’s novel The Borrowers by Mary Norton, the movie tells the story of a 14-year-old girl named Arrietty. She and her family are tiny people known as “borrowers.” They survive by “borrowing” food and other items from humans, taking only what they need to live. Arrietty and her family have managed to avoid being detected by living a simple life, enjoying each other’s company, and maintaining no contact with the outside world

WALKING INTO WALLS by Stephen Arterburn
7 MONEY RULES FOR LIFE by Mary Hunt
Do you feel defeated? Is there something holding you back from the life you should be living? Perhaps you’re walking into walls. In his latest book Walking Into Walls, bestselling author Stephen Arterburn says people can be restricted by walls they’re unaware of. And while it’s not easy, it’s possible to break through these barriers. Arterburn knows all about walls. As founder of New Life Ministries, an outreach for people dealing with addictions, he’s seen it in people’s lives. Using real life experiences and sound Biblical references, Arterburn helps readers identify their walls and the tools needed to demolish them. The five walls, or blind spots, are stubborn resistance, arrogant entitlement, justifiable resentment, disconnected isolation, and blind ignorance. For change to take place, these must be replaced with a willingness to change, humility, forgiveness, intimacy, and obedience. The study guide at the end of the book asks the right questions for self-evaluation. Ready for a breakthrough? Pick up a copy of this book.
When it comes to money issues, it’s easy to judge a book by its cover – especially so if it’s called 7 Money Rules for Life. Any book claiming to accomplish a significant goal in a few simple steps rings of hollow promises. How can one address the complexities of finances and faith in seven steps and 194 pages? With simplicity and grace. Mary Hunt’s financial know-how and personal experience in conquering staggering debts quells any misgivings about the book. From the intro (“We awakened from a 35-year drunken credit orgy with a terrible hangover”) to the conclusion, Hunt’s writing has readers hooked. The steps cover living below one’s means, knowing and anticipating expenses, saving intentionally, combating greed, and using credit wisely. Hunt gives Biblical financial advice without being preachy. While some examples are just for Americans, it holds universal concepts regardless of where you live, your income or the state of the economy. This book is a must-have.

NOTICING GOD by Richard Peace
DOWNFALL by Terri Blackstock
Richard Peace may be an unfamiliar author, but he writes with a welcomed style and depth on how we may notice God. The book’s subtitles describe how this may happen: In Mystical Encounters, In The Ordinary, In The Still Small Voice, In Community, In Creation, and More. Each subtitle is explained in detail. It’s good the final chapter is In the Church, because otherwise this would seem like some independent solitude exercise. It’s not. The chapters and topics are thorough yet simple in design. Peace communicates profound concepts in simple terms. This book is for the average reader, yet substantial enough for the spiritually learned. Thomas Merton’s quote describes the book’s intent well: “We are living in a world that is absolutely transparent and God is shining through it all the time … God manifests Himself everywhere, in everything, in people and in things and in nature and in events … we cannot be without Him.” A section for personal reflection or group discussion is included. This is a very good work, and is highly recommended.
Emily Covington’s choices have caused her family pain. Drug use endangered them, broke their trust, and upset an already tumultuous household. But she’s different now – past recovery, in college, hanging out with the “right” crowd, and helping her family start over in Georgia. She even started working at a rehab centre, helping other addicts break free from bondage. Until a car bomb explosion revealed a sinister plot to kill her. Downfall is the third and final novel in Terri Blackstock’s Intervention Series. Drawing from her personal experience as a parent of a former drug addict, Blackstock neither sugarcoats nor glamourizes the lifestyle. Instead, she shows the struggle of a parent learning to forgive and a young teen recovering from mistakes. Both need God’s wisdom and strength. Drug addiction wreaks havoc on any family – including Christian families. Downfall shows how a relationship with God can bring healing. It is a touching story of forgiveness, loyalty, and starting anew with God’s help. Thorough research in forensics and crime investigation makes Blackstock’s rollercoaster plots read like true crime novels, infused with the hope of God’s healing.

The City So Nice They Named It Twice by Sarah Chestnutt
the top eateries. Popular restaurants line the street to offer “tastes” of their menus. So instead of trying to decide which of the places you’ve heard so much about to visit, try out signature dishes of restaurants such as Carmine’s. It wouldn’t be New York without Broadway. With an array of shows to choose from any night of the week there’s plenty of opportunity to see the stage. It’s not just for adults — The Lion King is great for ages six and older and with eight shows a week, it fits into your schedule. Before leaving Manhattan check out the High Line. This elevated park was built on an abandoned railway trestle. With the second section newly opened, it shows how the city’s constantly changing. There’s always a museum nearby — and the variety demonstrates how diverse New York is. There’s an opportunity to view everything from subway art to skyscraper design. The Downtown Culture Pass offers savings of up to $50 with nine downtown museums. In the city that never sleeps you have to be ready to go, and help is right at your fingertips. Whether you’re looking for the closest subway or the nearest (and cleanest) bathroom, there’s a variety of apps you can download.
With international flights arriving daily, New York’s seven airports make getting to the city a breeze. The best way to get around is by subway. Operating 24/7, it will get you where you need to go quickly (except Staten Island — take the ferry). Stations are generally eight blocks apart — catch a ride anytime by getting a seven day pass for only $29. Don’t feel like walking to the station? Feel like a true New Yorker and hail a cab — or get a doorman for a $1 tip. Remember available ones have the number on top lit up. The city’s full of iconic department stores. Even if you’re window shopping you won’t want to miss Macy’s Herald Square and Saks Fifth Avenue. FAO Schwarz is sure to capture the imagination of kids and parents alike, especially as 2012 is the 150th anniversary. With so much to do, it’s easy for costs to creep up. You won’t be spending much time in the hotel anyway, so check out expedia.ca for great deals when it comes to a place to sleep. Whether you’re part of the energy in Times Square or soaking up the sun in Central Park, the whole family will love the Big Apple. Just don’t forget your camera to capture all those memories!

Itching for summer to start? Why wait for school to let out? Start the season with a bang by going to New York! There are five boroughs — The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island — each with its own distinct flavour. Visiting Staten Island? Hop aboard the Staten Island Ferry. The free ride, running 24 hours/day, offers breathtaking views coming and going. Take in some history with landmarks such as St. George’s Theatre , or the waterfront Esplanade with harbour views. Queens is full of culture, being the most ethnically diverse county in the U.S. The proof is in the pudding — take the opportunity to sample true Greek, Indian, East Asian, Mexican, or Irish foods. Cross the Brooklyn Bridge and visit the locals — Brooklyn has over 2.5 million residents. Wander the boardwalk at Coney Island. Thrill seekers can get the adrenaline pumping at Luna Park by getting swept away by the landmark coaster “Cyclone.” When you have your appetite back, stop by Nathan’s Famous and devour a hotdog that’s been a
tradition since 1916. Take the kids out to a ball game at Yankees Stadium. With famous closer Mariano Rivera talking of retiring and tickets for only $6, grab a glove and watch the storied franchise. After the game visit the Bronx Zoo. The largest metropolitan zoo in the U.S., admission is by donation on Wednesdays, making it easily affordable. Go wild with the animals, but definitely check out the endangered snow leopards. At 23 square miles it’s the smallest borough, but Manhattan has so much going for it you’d never notice. Get a breath of fresh air in Central Park — it’s over 800 acres of tranquility. Relax on a landscaped lawn, sail toy boats across a pond, or check out the monkeys at the Central Park Zoo. The skyline is recognized around the globe — take the opportunity to see it from among the skyscrapers at the Empire State Building. You’ll have stunning views from 1,250 feet above the city. Splurge on an express ticket to jump the line. With it’s buzzing pace and bright lights, Times Square is a must. You’ve seen it in shows and movies, but being there yourself is a whole different story. Taste of Time Square, on June 4, is a festival featuring flavours from some of
