Barry Is Baseball’s Wild Pitch

arry Zito isn’t your typical baseball player – which pleases him immensely. “I refuse to be molded into some stereotypical ballplayer that has no interests, really, no life, no depth, no intelligence. I can relate to anyone … I feel I can hang out with any group of people and find common ground,” he says. The left-handed pitcher for the World Series champions San Francisco Giants celebrated turning 35 on May 13, but his love of baseball began early. At seven, Zito practiced daily to be a professional pitcher. His skills were so obvious by his early teens that his father, Joe, gave up his own showbiz career and moved the family to California –

including Zito’s mother and two older sisters – for his son’s passion. He began working with Cy Young Award winner Randy Jones each week, played high school ball and was offered three separate college scholarships. He attended UC Santa Barbara as a freshman, earning Freshman All-American Honors from Collegiate Baseball after striking out 123 in 85.1 innings. He moved to Pierce Junior College as a sophomore and was all-state and all-conference after going 9-2 with a 2.62 ERA and 135 strikeouts in 103 innings. He then went on to USC, where he became a first-team All-America selection by USA Today Baseball Weekly, Collegiate Baseball, and

by Lori Sandys Lapierre Baseball America after going 12-3 with a 3.28 ERA and 154 strikeouts in 113.2 innings. Drafted by the Seattle Mariners and later the Texas Rangers, Zito finally signed an MLB contract with the Oakland A’s in 1999. While his career had ups and downs during the next seven seasons, Zito’s work was impressive. He made three All-Star teams, led the American League in starts four times, and never missed a scheduled start. continued on page 2 G Gold Sponsor

recognition of excellence in community service. He’s assisted the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Muscular Dystrophy Association, Special Olympics, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. And in early 2013, he was awarded the Hutch Award for the MLB player who best exemplifies “honour, courage, and dedication.” But Zito was searching for more. Raised in a metaphysical New Age church started by his grandmother, with his mother as a pastor, he admits he had no anchor. “It was not Christianity. It was kind of loosely based around it,” he explains. “But there was no rock for me to lean on … I grew up being a seeker and being completely out of the box and testing and reading and trying all different religious things and … philosophical approaches and such. I needed structure.” Then, coming off a rough 2010, 2011 proved to be life-changing. “I had a car accident. And a week later, I blew out my foot in a very odd foot injury … So that caused me to look inward and really just say, ‘Alright, something else is going on here, more than baseball injuries,’ ” Zito said at the Giant’s 2012 Fellowship Day. Looking back on the recent events, Zito made the most important decision he could have. “In 2011, I committed to Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour.” He goes on to comment on a tattoo – a golden calf, something worshipped as an idol in the Bible.

. In 2002, with a dazzling 23-5 record, he won the ultimate measure for a pitcher – the Cy Young Award. He was named AL TSN Pitcher of the Year. He also showed his colourful personality, earning the nicknames “Planet Zito” and “Captain Quirk.” The former skateboarder and surfer now played guitar in the dugout and brought stuffed animals on the road. He became a San Francisco Giant for the 2007 season, signing the largest contract for a pitcher at that time – $126 million for seven years. Not that it changed his personal standards. “Anyone who knows anything about me knows that money is not what drives me,” he says. Former A’s teammate Erik Hiljus agrees. “He’s a smart person who wants to get smarter. And really, how many people can you say that about?” But the 2007 and 2008 seasons proved difficult, and for the first time Zito was taken out of rotation. His stats improved in ’09, but after going 9-14 in 2010 he was removed from the postseason roster. He watched as his teammates went on to win the World Series. “2010 … was a very painful experience for me.” But things were about to change. Zito had always been big-hearted. After 9/11, he created Strikeouts for Troops for soldiers wounded in military operations. For every strikeout he throws, he donates $400. He was tabbed Baseball’s No. 1 Good Guy in 2006 by The Sporting News, has been a recipient of the Dave Stewart Community Service Award, and a finalist for both MLB’s Roberto Tim Tebow Clemente Award and Marvin Miller Man of the Year Award in

“There’s a thing in the Bible about idolatry, false idols – and that was something I had focused on my whole life. God was kind of like fourth or fifth on the list. But it reminds me always to not worship those false idols and to remember who’s first – and that’s God.” He became a married man that December, tying the knot with Amber Seyer – former Miss Missouri who had also become a Christian. In 2012, his career began to climb. He finished at 15-8, and his pitching 7-2/3 shutout innings in Game 5 of the 2012 NLCS became a worldwide trending Twitter phenomenon at #rallyzito. The Giants went on to sweep the Tigers in the World Series and Zito went 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA in the postseason. As a starter, 2013 has begun well, with the Giants leading the National League west, and Zito earning the longest home scoreless streak by a Giants pitcher since 1936 Hall of Famer Carl Hubbell. “It tells you a lot about a man’s character to persevere the way he has through some struggles, Giants manager Bruce Bochy told the San Francisco Chronicle. “That’s why we’re all so happy and proud of what Barry’s doing now.”

“A relationship with Jesus is one of security and intimacy. I am totally known to Him, totally accepted, and loved unconditionally, for who and what I am. I can come to Him for any reason – to share joy, to ask for guidance – and know that I will be loved completely,” she explains. Then, on Thanksgiving in 2012, she heard of Freedom Climb 2013 – an adventure where 45 women from around the globe would trek to Everest Base Camp (17,598 ft), then summit Kalaphatar (18,192 ft) in Nepal, 110 kilometres and 77.5 hours of climbing, to raise money and awareness through Operation Mobilization to fight human trafficking. “For some reason the Freedom Climb grabbed me by the heart and shook me awake,” Heppner recalls. “I thought maybe, just maybe, I could make a difference!” The 39-year-old mother of three left the flatlands of the Prairies and joined the group on April 9-25 as the only Canadian taking on the Himalayas. “How do I sum this trip up? It seemed everyday was a brand new terrain – from lush farming, to rocks and rubble, to majestic mountain tops. It was amazing, beautiful, exhausting, and emotional! And worth every minute!” Heppner joined the climb not only to raise money and awareness for the worthy cause, but to share how God transformed her life and gave her the strength to overcome her personal mountains. “I have come through so much – abuse, addiction – and I wanted to be able to share what God’s love has done in my life – healing, peace, and strength. I wanted to do this for everyone who has gone through similar things, who have been broken, or bullied, or even just lack confidence in themselves. “I wanted to climb this mountain for those who are suffering to show that God loves you, and He will stand by you and give you strength to climb your own mountains – whatever those may be.”

Newsbriefs The Voice Responds To His Call NASHVILLE, TN — Renowned country artist George Jones may have passed on but his 50-year legacy in country music remains. Fellow musicians recently paid tribute to the 81-year-old Country Music Hall of Famer through a threehour public funeral at the Grand Ole Opry. The “Possum” wasn’t only known for his ability to “pull every drop of emotion out of songs” – as country superstar Alan Jackson described his unique talent – but also for his tumultuous personal life replete with drunken antics and turbulent love affairs. “I was a miserable person,” Jones, who was known as The Voice, told Living Light News. “I didn’t have much of a relationship (with God) and that’s one of the reasons

my life was so crazy.” Jones, who once drove a lawnmower on the highway to buy a drink, found God in the latter years of his life. Hospitalized after losing so much weight from his hard-partying lifestyle, he started reading the Bible in the hospital. “The Bible was one of the books that I really believed in but never lived or read like I should have until I was in the hospital,” he said in a CBN interview. “I didn’t know there was a way back. But then I started reading the Bible, and I found that way back with the Lord’s help and (my wife) Nancy staying by my side.” He told Rolling Stone Magazine, “I’ve changed my way of life. I do believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and do pray often, even though I’m not a saint.”

Green On The Green MIAMI BEACH., FL — What would you do if you found a bag full of cash? Rachel Castillo happened upon one last January after a golfer alerted her about an unattended bag at the Miami Beach golf course where she works. When Castillo opened the bag, she saw “stack after stack” of cash, totalling to $36,000. While she admits to “freaking out a little bit” at the sight of cash equivalent to her full year’s pay, it wasn’t hard for Castillo to decide what to do with it – turn it over to authorities and return it to its rightful owner. “I believe in the Bible,” she told Associated Press. “I’m a Christian, and the Bible says, ‘Do not steal, do not lie,’ you know, all these things,

and if you do what’s right, if you live the right way, you’ll be taken care of. I believe I’ll be taken care of ... if you do what’s right.” The bag is owned by a 76-year-old man with dementia who resides in an assisted living facility. “We have identified that money as his through different transactions that he made,” Bobby Hernandez of the Miami Beach Police told NBC Miami. Hernandez expressed shock at Castillo’s honesty. “One thing is to say to do the right thing, and it’s another to do it.” Castillo didn’t receive a monetary reward, but NBC Miami reports that a certificate of appreciation is expected to be awarded. She said she believes her reward will come from God.

Hollywood Honours ‘Unbroken’ Hero HOLLYWOOD HILLS, CA — WWII hero Louis Zamperini’s story is going to Hollywood. After five decades of trying to bring Zamperini’s bestselling biography into the big screen, Universal Pictures has finally moved forward with actress Angelina Jolie as the director. Emmynominated screenwriters Ethan and Joel Coen will draft the script. Zamperini’s larger-than-life story is an inspiring tale of survival. The son of Italian immigrants, the Torrance, Calif.-native was a selfdescribed “little punk” who always got into trouble. Running was his way of releasing pent-up energy. With his athleticism, he set track records, qualified for the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and met Adolf Hitler. Life was good until 1943 when, while serving in the Air Force, Zamperini’s plane crashed over the Pacific. He survived 47 days adrift on a raft, attacked

by Japanese pilots and hungry sharks. When he finally made land, Zamperini was captured by Japanese soldiers and was imprisoned for two years. Freed in 1945, he remained a prisoner of post-traumatic stress disorder. It wasn’t until 1949 when his wife coaxed him to attend a Billy Graham Crusade did Zamperini experience real freedom. “Boy, it was a complete turnabout,” he said in a 1976 interview. “I had a totally new direction of life and a whole new purpose.” Zamperini has since returned to Japan to forgive his tormentors in person. Now at 96, the Torrance Tornado remains active, speaking to audiences about his remarkable life story, freedom in Jesus Christ, and forgiveness. As he says in his autobiography, “God has given me so much. He expects so much out of me.” As for the film, no timetable has yet been announced.

Birthday Sparks Bright Blessings MATTHEWS, NC — Looking at the stack of birthday presents for her then three-year-old son Alex, Amy Cervantes had an epiphany. Why not do something for other kids who are not able to celebrate their own? The mother of three thought it would also help her children to give back. What started out as a luau-themed party for a kid at a local homeless shelter became the start of Bright Blessings, a nonprofit the Cervantes started to bring a little happiness to kids on their birthday. Bright Blessings holds monthly group birthday parties for homeless kids complete with face painting, cupcakes, and gifts. Since 2005, Bright Blessings has thrown over 10,000 birthday parties for kids in shelters and

schools, including children who are transient homeless. The nonprofit is completely run by volunteers and funded by donations. “I felt very special,” 14-year-old Alexis Odugba told People. She celebrated her birthday with pizza and received perfumes and lotions at the YWCA shelter courtesy of Bright Blessings. The Cervantes kids, including now 10-year-old Alex, learned to appreciate their blessings by being involved. Alex especially loves helping to pick out gifts. “When they hear the [birthday] song, they just get so excited, their faces light up,” he told People. “I feel pretty blessed. They might get a party once or twice in a four-year span, but I get it every year.”

Prospect Keeps Fame In Perspective VAUGHAN, ON — He’s been dubbed the next LeBron James, or the next Michael Jordan. One look at Andrew Wiggins’ powerful slam dunks and cat-like agility on the court and you’ll get why he’s the top college basketball prospect for 2013. The 6-foot-8 Ontario teen who plays for West Virginia’s Huntington Prep seems to have it all. He’s got the genes: his parents are former NBA player Mitchell Wiggins who had a 20-year career in the NBA, and Olympian sprinter Marita Payne-Wiggins who won two silver medals for Canada. Called a “basketball phenom,” he’s definitely got skill, proven by legions of NBA scouts wanting to recruit him. For someone who’s only 18, that’s something. But despite Wiggins’ fame, something else about him impressed Greensboro coach

King Ralph Meets King Of Kings CALGARY, AB — Former Alberta premier Ralph Klein was nicknamed “King Ralph,” referencing his longevity in politics. Born in Calgary, AB, Klein served as the city’s mayor from 1980 to 1989 followed by a transition to provincial politics. This paved the way for over a decade at Alberta’s helm. While at times a polarizing figure, Klein was respected for being personable and for his honest, tell-it-like-it-is manner. But even beloved earthly rulers have weaknesses. Three years after resigning, Klein’s health took a nosedive after being hospitalized for pulmonary problems, and later with dementia. Calgary Herald reported last month that in the spring of 2011, Klein spoke with First Alliance Church pastor Ray Matheson about doing his funeral. The Herald reported what

Matheson told Klein: “I just wanted to be sure that you’re ready to die, that when you die you’ll go to Heaven and that you’ll be assured of that fact.” When Klein inquired further, Matheson explained that the way to Heaven “isn’t dependent on ... how many good deeds you’ve done. The Bible says it’s not of good works that you are saved, but it is through recognizing that we are all sinners.” He also explained that Jesus Christ came to die for people’s sins and God offers forgiveness, peace, and eternal life if we receive Jesus. He said he led Klein through a prayer of acceptance. Matheson’s most recent visit with Klein was four days before he died. Matheson said the 70-year-old Klein felt peace though he could sense his death was imminent. The pastor says, “I’m confident that Ralph is with Jesus and that he’s in Heaven.”

Freddy Johnson. At a team dinner when other kids simply left the room after eating, Wiggins asked where to put his tray of dirty dishes. “He was obviously very well raised,” Johnson told The Canadian Press. “He volunteers for stuff, he’s such a nice kid.” This selflessness shows in his game. “I really like the way, when he gets the ball ... he’s not just looking to score, he’s trying to make everybody better on his team,” Johnson observed. And so when asked how he deals with all the attention, self-effacing Wiggins replied, “I’ve just got to keep working hard every day and stay humble. I know any day life can be cut short, so I just stay praising God and hoping to stay healthy.” The Ontario-native is mulling over his choices as the sports world awaits his decision.

Viewpoints Making The Most Of Your Commute by Andrew Hess Years from now, historians will look back at our day and observe, among other things, the disproportionate amount of time we spent commuting to work. I’m blessed that my commute is only about 15 minutes each way (depending on traffic), but I know many whose daily traverse eats up hours each s Andrew Hess day. These hours should not be squandered away, but can and should be used wisely. Your morning commute can become a very productive and enjoyable part of your daily routine. Here are a few suggestions:

Maybe, just maybe, “It’s a time machine! our baby is a genius. But You get in it tonight personally, I think she and when you wake up said “heiroglyphics” it’s tomorrow .” by accident.

1. Audio Books If you’re like me, there just aren’t enough hours in the day to read everything you want to. I’ve started taking advantage of several inexpensive (and even free) ways to listen to great books. I once listened to half of Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers on the drive into the mountains. Another time, I listened to Dostoevsky’s 800page classic The Brothers Karamozov in about three weeks during my daily commute. Most public libraries now have audio books on CD you can www.glasbergen.com www.glasbergen.com © © 2013 2013 by 2012 by Randy Randy Glasbergen Glasbergen

These hours should not be squandered away. check out for free. I’ve recently discovered the OverDrive app (omc.overdrive.com). Download electronic audio books right to your phone and listen for up to 21 days. I’ve also downloaded several free, monthly audio books from christianaudio.com. There are also inexpensive audio books available at PaperBackSwap (paperbackswap.com), a great resource for any book lover. 2. Podcasts I also regularly use my iPod to listen to sermons, teachings, courses, and podcasts that are specific to areas in which I want to grow. You can use your commute to sharpen yourself vocationally and socially, as well as spiritually. Consider areas of your life you’d like to grow, and look for resources you might be able to listen to. 3. Scripture Keep an audio Bible in your car and listen to the Scriptures. I prefer the ESV Hear the Word Audio Bible. This has been a great aid to my study and teaching. I was once teaching a class on the book of James at church and listened to the book upwards of 20 times as part of my preparation. It was a pretty easy way to become very familiar with the book. While reading through some books in the Bible feels daunting, listening to them feels much less intimidating. 4. Prayer As Christians, the daily commute can be a good time to pray over the day. I spend many mornings praying over my deadlines and projects. It’s amazing how quickly prayer can disarm worries and anxieties. Many blog ideas and solutions to problems I’m dealing with have come to me during a prayerful commute. Coincidence? I think not. (Disclaimer: I strongly recommend driving with your eyes open.) 5. Silence As a general rule, our lives are too noisy. Some avoid the uneasiness of silence altogether, but we are wise to remember silence has long been considered a valuable spiritual discipline. I don’t do silence well or as frequently as I should. But I do recognize that regular times of silence are beneficial. Take a morning once and a while, and spend a portion of your commute in silence. There are certainly other productive ways to optimize your commute, but most will find a little intentionality goes a long way. Thirty-two Things We Can Learn From Cats by Phil Callaway I received a note from a lady who heard me on the radio talking about tricks my dog taught me. Things like worrying less, faithfulness in friendship, and unconditional love. She wrote, “I’ve got three cats. What can we learn from cats?” Great question. First of all we can learn from their grievous errors. Five hundred million birds are killed each year by cats in the United States. So we can learn to be kinder. Cats nap without ceasing. Nothing against naps, but cats nap something like 27 hours a day, so be careful. Sloth is not a virtue. My daughter-in-law’s cat has taught me to spend time with people when they’re working. To sprawl across their laps, walk on their keyboards, knock stuff off their desk then pounce on it. I’ve learned to sneak up behind my wife and grab her by the socks. Or wake her in the middle of the night, just staring at her, three inches from her face. Here are some wise things I’ve learned from feline friends: I’ve learned to keep myself clean, soak in the sun, and enjoy the view more

s Phil Callaway often. I’ve learned to explore. The world is filled with adventure, so sit up and take notice. I’ve learned to stretch. After a nap, and better yet, stretch my mind and learn

impressed or offended anyone that day. I like the fearlessness of a kitten; they see themselves as a lion. They embrace life and independence and companionship too. They show appreciation with a purr. I once watched a cat fall asleep, literally. He fell four feet from a dresser while snoozing, landed on the floor, bounced, and was fine. So I need to relax more, though you won’t find me up on a dresser anytime soon. Cats rarely pick favourites. They’ll share their time with anyone – or they’ll ignore everyone equally. Cats look at things from different angles, from high on a shelf

Cats rarely pick favourites. and grow. Cats seem to be good listeners. That’s a good trait to have. Though we shouldn’t get up while a friend is talking and just walk from the room. Cats do this. I appreciate the way cats don’t worry about what others think. They don’t lie awake wondering if they

or under a chair. We need a different perspective sometimes too. Author C.S. Lewis had an interesting perspective on dogs and cats. In 1955, he wrote this to a friend: “We were talking about cats and dogs the other day and decided that both have consciences, but the

dog, being an honest, humble person, always has a bad one, but the cat is a Pharisee and always has a good one. When he sits and stares at you out of countenance he is thanking God that he is not as these dogs, or these humans, or even as these other cats!” In the Bible’s Luke 18, Jesus Christ tells a story of two men praying. One was a Pharisee, the other a despised tax collector. The Pharisee prayed, “Thank you, God, that I’m not a sinner like everyone else!” But the tax collector wouldn’t even lift his eyes to Heaven as he prayed, “O God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” Jesus said, “I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. Those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” I need a reminder today to love others, to stop judging them, to thank God for His grace to me – a sinner. Time To Take A Break

s Marcia Laycock by Marcia Laycock

y husband and I were helping to run a soccer Bible camp and had two young men staying with us from out of town. I was on the go, doing registration, being the “go-fer,” making meals, cookies, doing laundry, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. I didn’t mind it at all, but trying to get to my computer for some extended writing time was a challenge. I was getting rather stressed about that when I remembered something that happened a while ago in the parking lot of a local bookstore. My husband and I were heading for our car when I heard my name being called and looked back to see one of my favourite writers, a mentor and friend for some years, Sigmund Brouwer. I was pleased to bump into him because I’d sent him an email some time before about

speaking at a writers’ event and he hadn’t yet replied. When I mentioned it he explained when he’s writing he doesn’t do email. After chatting for a while we went our separate ways and I commented to my husband, “I wonder what would happen if I ignored my email for that long?” “The world would stop spinning and fall off its axis,” he said. His joking reply made me grin and it gave me some much-needed perspective. Having just gone through a whole year during which, for health reasons, I could neither do much writing nor involve myself in most of the other endeavours in which I usually engage, I have come to realize that I’m not totally indispens-

able and a break in routine doesn’t necessarily mean disaster. The world didn’t stop spinning. Life did go on even if I had to take a break from some things. And the slower rhythm of life gave me more time to ponder and listen and sometimes just enjoy. So, with the week of soccer

5

The Cellular Level camp getting increasingly more and more busy, I gave myself permission to take a break from the writing regimen I’d set out for myself to finish my latest work in progress. The pause threw the schedule off a bit, but it didn’t stop the world from spinning – surprise, surprise! As soon as I made that decision, the week immediately became less stressful and a lot more fun. Making the meals and baking the cookies and doing all the other go-fer jobs became a joy. It reminded me of one of my favourite verses from The Message version of the Bible – “I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with Me and work with Me – watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with Me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly” (Matthew 11: 28-30). “The unforced rhythms of grace.” Words to ponder, words to build into our lives, those of us who are Christians take the time to “keep company” with the Lord, draw closer to those around us, and closer to the interior workings of our thoughts and emotions, motives, and dreams. How about you? Is it time to give yourself permission to take a break? Marcia Laycock’s latest book, ‘One Smooth Stone,’ is available at www.vinemarc.com or by calling 1-800-238-9376.

y kids are in their teens and 20s so it was funny the other day when they saw one of the earliest cell phones. I’m talking vintage here – just this side of fossilized. And huge. A dinosaur in every way. I dubbed it “Cell-asaurus Rex.” My kids thought it must be some sort of coffee grinder. I think one of them was trying to get it to churn butter. If you want to know what it was really like with those first mobile phones, try holding your microwave upside your head. All the mobile phone bells and whistles? I’m pretty sure on those first phones, they were actual bells and whistles. I told my kids I thought people probably had a tough time back then knowing if a guy was listening to his boom box or talking on his cell phone. Of course, then I had to explain what a boom box was. I told

them it was a giant mp3 player. I’m thankful technology is always evolving, coming up with something bigger and better. Or sometimes something smaller and better. Sometimes size is pretty relative. I want a big faith. I really do. I want super-sized faith with all the bells and whistles. But the Bible tells us when the disciples asked Jesus Christ to give them bigger faith, Jesus answered in a rather surprising way. In Luke 17:5 the disciples said to Jesus, “Increase our faith.” Jesus’ answer? “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it

On those first phones, they were actual bells and whistles. will obey you.” Matthew tells us what Jesus said in another part of the Bible, “For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you’ ” (Matthew 17:20). According to Jesus Himself, with even the tiniest faith, we can do huge things. Impossible

things. It’s not so much the size of the faith as it is who the faith is in. A faith planted firmly in Christ and an obedient response to Him makes a huge impact on life. Mountainous! It’s good to remember that faith grows at the deepest part of who we are. At the “cellular” level, if you will. Paul tells us in Romans 10:17 that faith comes through the Bible. It teaches us about God’s character, His power, and His incomparable trustworthiness. Studying the character of God changes our faith – all the way down to our deepest, heart-ofheart parts. The more we study Him through the Bible, and the more we know Him, the more we respond in obedience, and the more our faith grows. We can put our faith in Christ. It’s safe there. I’m so thankful my all-powerful Saviour graciously confirms that in new ways each day. He takes us to deeper places in our faith at every new point of surrender. And in the not-so-deep places, I’m also thankful the phones are getting smaller. Phonezilla is appropriately extinct. A seedsized phone? Could be the next big thing. Beating Busyness by Dr. Charles F. Stanley

B

usyness is highly regarded in our society. Ambitious men and women are admired and rewarded for dedicated focus on their careers. Mothers juggling all their kids’ activities while caring for the home and pursuing an occupation are “supermoms.” Overloaded students who run from school to sports to enrichment activities are promised bright futures. s Dr. Charles F. Stanley It seems we have hopped on the “busy bandwagon,” hoping to find meaningful lives. But how many fall into bed completely exhausted, only to get up the next day and start all over again?

Why am I so busy? Maybe it’s time to step off our treadmills of activity, grab a Bible, and sit down with God for an honest time of self-examination. People overload their schedules for a variety of reasons, but perhaps the chief one is we live in a fast-paced culture. There’s more to do than there’s time to do it. Many feel overwhelmed by hectic lifestyles yet don’t know how to slow down. Some people with driven personalities thrive on overcommitment. They find great satisfaction and meaning in completing each task and are eager to add more challenges. Others stay busy to avoid dealing with painful experiences. By keeping active, they hope to silence the ache within.

What does God think? Regardless of the reasons, we need to pause and consider what God thinks about unceasing activity. By viewing our lifestyles from His perspective, we can determine whether we are living according to His will or have gotten off track. Being busy isn’t always a bad thing. God has entrusted each of us with responsibilities, such as providing for our families. Although we’re not to neglect these duties, we must guard against letting them push aside the most important things. To determine what God considers top priority, let’s examine His

purposes for mankind. He created us to enjoy a personal relationship with Him – to really know and love Him. He also planned specific tasks for us (Ephesians 2:10). Christians sometimes refer to these as “the will of God for your life.” Knowing this, we need to consider whether our busyness is helping or hindering us in fulfilling God’s desires. Does your schedule include time for building a deep relationship with God? Are you doing the work God planned for you or just muddling along?

What are the consequences? Overcommitment damages our relationship with God. Have you considered how your busy schedule makes God feel? He longs to have a close connection with us, but when our activities crowd Him out, His heart is grieved by our lack of interest. Although an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ is available to every believer, everyone has a responsibility to actively pursue it. To understand what this requires, consider what it takes to destroy a relationship. That’s simple: don’t meet with or talk to the other person. Sadly, this is what many are doing when we let other things take priority over time with God.

It’s time to step off our treadmills of activity. . The only way busy people will grow in relationship with God is by giving Him their most precious commodity – uninterrupted time in His presence. Busyness keeps us from participating in God’s will. Remember, God has designed specific tasks for believers. However, there are two ways we can miss what He has in mind for us. First, if we’re too busy to set aside time to seek His direction, we won’t know if we’re doing what He wants. Second, if we’re intent on achieving our own plans, we’ll have no time for His. Who’s controlling your schedule? Have you let values of the culture determine your agenda? Since we’re all inundated with requests for our time, the ability to say no is invaluable. Not every opportunity is God’s will for you. That’s why staying connected to Him is important – then you can

discern His will. Keep in mind His plans are good and perfect. God’s plan may not be easy, but you can know with certainty that following it will produce fruit lasting throughout eternity.

Get off the treadmill Many feel trapped by the speed of life but see no way to slow down. Some basic Biblical principles can guide us. Become very familiar with Scripture. If we’re too busy to read the Bible, we’ll follow the flow of our culture and chase after hollow treasures. How can we make good choices if we never seek God’s guidance? Wait on God. This is hard, but rushing ahead without direction will put you back on the treadmill – going nowhere fast. Ask God to evaluate your activities and show what He desires for you. Obey and leave the consequences to God. Once you’ve received direction from God, step out in obedience. Our tendency is to want the entire plan revealed before we move, but that’s not God’s way. He says the Bible is a lamp to our feet (Psalm 119:105), not a searchlight. If your car was in a parking lot at night, you wouldn’t sit waiting for sunrise so you could see the way home. No, you would turn on the lights and drive in their beam without knowing what lies ahead. Likewise, God’s will usually comes in small increments. After we take one step, He reveals the next. God wants us to trust Him in every step. One of the greatest advantages of this is the freedom of leaving the consequences to Him. Once we obey, He assumes responsibility for what’s next. Because we can’t lose when following God’s will, there’s no need to fear. Although altering a busy lifestyle may not be easy, it’s worth the effort. The quest for fulfillment and purpose can drive us to overloaded schedules. But the frenzy will end when we find the joy in an intimate relationship with Jesus and the thrill of pursuing His will. Let’s get off the treadmill and go for a walk with God. Dr. Charles F. Stanley, author of more than 50 books, is the pastor of First Baptist Church of Atlanta, GA, and founder of In Touch Ministries. “He was amazing in the arts, but his potential was never realized. I wanted to make his life count.” Adams began summer art camps for young people, which has now grown into an arts academy launched last fall. Grants have helped provide equipment and renovations that included adding a stage with light, and rooms for art, music, and drama. A preschool indoor Art Park is also offered for ages three to six, focusing on music and movement; and Splash Art, where children create art through different means. Scholarships are available, with donations sought from businesses and organizations for the fall session.

This July, four two-week summer camps are available for kids ages seven to 15. Each camp will focus on one of four areas: playing in a band, voice lessons, visual arts, and theatre arts. Camps run on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to allow students to share over lunch. “Our hearts are to work with at-risk kids,” says Adams, who pastors Fusion Fellowship with Mark, her husband of 25 years. “They don’t have the means to pursue that talent. We create a place for children to develop their potential and ... the character they need to succeed.” Daniel Saison is the academy’s program director, Kids of Promise director Daniel Saison, daughter who jokes that music is in Tyleen, and founder Sherry Adams will hold his bloodline. voice, band, theatre, and visual arts summer “A lot of my family in the camps in July to help hone kids’ artistic talents Philippines are professional and character. Everything stemmed from church – dramas, singing in choirs, playing on the worship team,” says Saison, who worked for six years as director of children’s programming and multimedia in Oregon. “I was drawing, painting, or playing instruments all the time.” A church mentor led Saison to faith in Jesus Christ at eight. “She had the [gift of] encouragement and impressed upon me that if I had a God-given talent, to use it.” Saison was touring with his band when he met Adams three years ago. His wife, Colleen, interned at Adams’ church. “I believe every person is created to do something that no one else can,” states Sherry Adams, founder of Kids of Promise – a non-profit safe haven of artistic discovery for kids ages three to 15. “I want to see children’s passion.” Raised in an athletic family, Adams admits art is not her natural talent. “I’d rather do sports with kids. I went into schools for athletic programs and saw kids who had more desire for music, dance, or art.” Adams reflects on the passion behind her ministry – her brother who died at age 21.

Kids love that!” Like 14-year-old Brody. “He knew how to play a guitar, but didn’t know how to play in a band,” shares Adams. “He can’t wait for summer camp again!” Adams and Saison focus on teaching seven virtues while imparting a love for art: empathy, conscience, self-control, kindness, respect, tolerance, and fairness. “The idea is to develop a community of honour, no matter what they’ve done. It’s the compassion of Christ, the love of God. God loves us, and asks us to love one another.” Saison says he’s found his niche. “I’m a professional musician. I like [teaching], to impart to kids. To create something in them. I like working with Sherry because she changes a room when she walks in. Like Mary Poppins,” he laughs. “I do the hands work, and she does the heart work. We’re a very powerful team.” Adams is excited about what the program offers kids who participate. “They need to know that somebody believes in them. They come in and are greeted as if they are the most important person in the world. There’s so much inside of a child – they [need] the opportunity to bring it out.”

Lending a

others who need a helping hand.

by Carolyn Tomlin

At last, the long anticipated summer breaks arrive, indicating another year of school is over. If your grandchild is like most others, they’ve made plans in advance for this time of rest and relaxation. But as grandparents, you can use this time to teach about service to God and people in your community. There’s still time to involve your family in projects that make a difference — and perhaps your family will benefit most of all. Seeing grandparents become involved can be a life-changing event for a grandchild. Here are some suggestions to get you going.

READY, SET, SERVE

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Check with a local school and see if a youth project is underway. Schools often use summer vacation for travel to other countries for study or different volunteer experiences. Senior adults are often needed as chaperons, guides, or in meal preparation. Alternatively, is there a location that has experienced a natural disaster? Is a group going from your community to prepare meals, help with clean-up, or rebuilding? What about your own community? Help your grandchildren or the kids in your neighbourhood to find ways to get involved in local projects to help out close to home.

PERSONAL PRODUCTS

Contact a local nonprofit about projects where seniors and older children or youth can do some hands-on work together. Some charitable organizations go into low-income neighbourhoods and repair roofs, paint houses, trim bushes, and do yard maintenance. Others build ramps at homes where wheelchairbound people live. Teach children the importance of serving

Talk with the manager of a shelter for the homeless as to particular needs. Could the shelter use personal articles, such as shampoo, soap, toothpaste, and brushes? Help your grandchild collect these travel-size items from your church, community, and businesses. Hotels and motels provide these for travelers — could they provide you with any extras? Collect good quality used sheets and blankets from garage and yard sales. Deliver these to organizations who could put them to use. Helping others is a great way for the children in your life to connect with those around them.

MY FAMILY TO YOURS

Has there been a tornado, flood, fire, or other adversity where people need basic supplies? There are lots of ways to get involved helping those affected. Why not “adopt” a family and offer to help provide

cleaning supplies, paper products, and other basics. Could you encourage other families in your church and community to follow your example? Think how your church or community could make a difference if several families or groups became involved.

MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK

It seems there’s always a project or two to work on outside in the great summer weather! Check with community centres or local businesses if they need flowers planted in beds or pots outside their building. Provide heavy-duty plastic bags for leaf and small limbs pickup. With adult participation, even young children can pick up twigs and clean up yards, helping to make the community cleaner. For safety, always wear protective gloves and avoid sections near traffic areas. Make certain a mature and responsible adult is present at all time when children are working on a service project. Make serving together a project to share with grandchildren and their friends.

BEHIND THE SCENES

If you, as grandparents or seniors connecting with young people in your community, can not be present at projects, there are still ways you can volunteer. Provide a first-aid kit for small scrapes and nicks. Make sure a cell phone is available if an emergency should arise. Supply refreshments or sandwiches and drinks for snacks or a noon meal. Bring in jugs of water or juice to keep things cool. Provide transportation to and from the site. Teaching children to serve others is another way of serving God. Help the kids in your life to find ways of making a difference in their community and helping out their neighbours.

FamilyFocus by Kim Perrone Whether moving around the block or across the country, life changes. While everyone will face struggles preparing and adjusting, parental forethought can determine how easily kids face everything from finding their new favourite nook to making friends.

SET THE TONE

Moving should be the subject of a family gathering led by parents who come off as confident in their decision, not a “by the way” sort of discussion. No matter how thrilled or miserable you might be about moving, keep your attitude in check. The Nemours Foundation/KidsHealth® (kidshealth.org) notes, “During times of transition, a parent’s moods and attitudes can greatly affect kids, who may be looking for reassurance.” Relay as much concrete information about time tables, new locales, and schools as possible. Provide visuals of the new house and community by way of photographs or the Internet. If you’re computer savvy, create a PowerPoint presentation. How’s that for coming off concrete and prepared?

CONTROL FACTOR

Any parent knows kids don’t like situations forced upon them. Since the choice to move is typically not a child’s decision, the best you can do to ease pouting and turmoil is to include kids in decisionmaking involving the finer details. Allow them a say in the décor of their new bedroom or playroom. What personal belongings or furniture would they like to keep? Author and experienced mover, Lori Collins Burgan encourages parents to give kids some

power over their new situation in, Moving With Kids: 25 Ways To Ease Your Family’s Transition To A New Home (Harvard Common Press). It’s an excellent resource before and after breaking the news.

CONSIDERING CONNECTIONS

Moving away from friends used to mean, “Goodbye, nice knowing you.” These days, opportunities abound for keeping in touch through social media. Let’s face it: Many of us get the impression that’s how most teens communicate even if they are in the same room, anyway! Younger children can talk face-to-face via Skype (skype.com) from time to time. Still, it’s no fun for kids to leave friends behind. Perhaps throw yourselves a goodbye party. Have everyone provide whatever contact information they wish (e-mail, Facebook, Twitter, Skype). Once the move takes place, your child will know her old friends are just a few keystrokes away.

PACKING PIZAZZ

When packing, remember a fresh start can mean less clutter in your new home if you leave unnecessary excess behind. Holding a garage sale can be an excellent opportunity to help kids unload excess – especially if you allude to purchasing something (piece of furniture, swing set, cool wallpaper) for your new home with the profits. Packing lists are imperative and Relocate Canada (relocatecanada.com) can provide them, room by room, as well as guides for each aspect of your move. Encourage kids to pack their own boxes, teaching them not to over or under-fill. Show how to seal with packing tape, and let them get creative making identification labels.

SETTLING IN

After the move, focus on achieving a sense of normalcy as soon as possible. Set up kids’ rooms first, and hook up the TV so they can watch their favourite shows. More important, pick up family traditions such as pizza night or bedtime stories immediately; you’ll demonstrate that home is about love and family, not the walls around you. As far as school goes, Nemours Foundation/ KidsHealth® says, “Generally, teachers expect new kids to feel somewhat comfortable in their classes in about six weeks. Some kids need less time; others might need more.” Set realistic expectations. In her book, Burgan advocates meeting with your children’s teachers before they begin. Knowing something about a new student’s personality and their unique challenges helps the teacher get started helping her new

Wellness

Veggies

VisionFriendly by Beth Bence Reinke, MS, RD You’ve probably heard carrots are good for your eyes. But they’re not the only sight-saving vegetable around town. Look no further than your local traffic light to see the best colours for eye health. Research shows that eating certain red, yellow and green veggies may decrease the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration, leading causes of vision loss. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye due to damaged proteins. It usually develops gradually, over a number of years. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is loss of central vision you need to see people’s faces or words in a book. The macula is the middle of the retina, responsible for focusing on fine details.

LOOK FOR TRAFFIC LIGHTS Red, yellow, and green vegetables may protect eye health because of their powerful antioxidants that help remove disease-causing free radicals from the body, including the eyes. Studies show vitamin C, vitamin E, betacarotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin may protect against vision loss from cataracts and/or AMD. Many veggies in traffic light colours are rich in some or all of these nutrients, making them super foods for your eyes that definitely get a green light.

GIVE EYES A HELPING HAND

Vitamins C and E, plus beta-carotene, are antioxidants, meaning they fight oxidative stress put on our cells by free radicals. Results of studies involving these nutrients and eye protection have been perplexing. Some studies show eating foods high in vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene helps decrease the chance of vision loss or slow its progression. But research using vitamin pills has been perplexing, showing that taking vitamin C or E supplements helps some people but others don’t see the benefit. Bottom line? Getting your nutrients from whole foods is best.

MINERALS AND MORE

The mineral zinc and omega-3 fats are important to keep a look out for when it comes to eye health. Zinc is found in meat, poultry, dairy, nuts and seeds. Omega-3 fats found in fish oil may also protect against AMD.

EYE PROTECTION PARTNERS

Lutein and zeaxanthin are naturally-occurring pigments in plants that protect the eyes like sunscreen shields the skin. Remember the centre of the retina called the macula? These two pigments accumulate in the tissues of the macula where they filter out harmful blue light. Scientists think this sunscreen effect may play a role in preventing AMD. The theory is the more lutein and zeaxanthin you get from your diet, the more protective pigment in your macula. Several large studies showed that people who ate lots of lutein-rich foods had lower risk of getting cataracts than people who ate hardly any lutein. Interestingly, lutein and zeaxanthin are almost always found together in foods and a surprising source is egg yolks. Although the amount in eggs is small, research suggests these nutrients are

absorbed better from eggs than from richer plant sources. So get cracking!

BEST VEGGIE IN SIGHT

Of all the traffic light veggies, broccoli and broccoli sprouts might be the best choice in sight. They have an extra antioxidant called sulforaphane which protects eyes from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet rays. In one lab study, the more sulforaphane human retinal cells received, the more protected they were from oxidative damage.

EYE ON THE PRIZE

Your eyesight is priceless. To improve the chances of reading, driving, and seeing the faces of your loved ones for many years to come, take a glance at these sight-saving tips. Wear sunglasses blocking 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays. Since sunlight comes in from all angles, a wide-brimmed hat is helpful, too. See your eye doctor for checkups on a regular basis. Don’t smoke. Smoking contributes to both cataracts and AMD. Eat a variety of traffic-light-coloured fruits and vegetables each day. Examples of bright reds are tomatoes and red bell peppers. Try corn, sweet potato, carrots, squash, pumpkin, cantaloupe, peaches, papaya, or mango for golden yellows. Dark greens include broccoli, broccoli sprouts, spinach, peas, green bell peppers, avocado, and more. Eating for your eyes doesn’t limit your diet, just opens up a whole new way to look at veggies on your plate! Beth Bence Reinke, MS, RD, is a registered dietician who writes about food, health, and nutrition. She is the author of ‘Fruit Lovers’ Devotions To Go,’ and several children’s books. NotesHeart from the

Spreading the love one letter at a time

How many ways can you say “I love you?” Ashley Green has found over 5,300, and she’s just getting started. Taking the “random acts of kindness” idea to a new level, Green started the Love Letters 2 Strangers project in 2011 – homemade inspirational notes she hands out to strangers in the coffee shop, at the market, or tucks into books at the bookstore. “I leave the letters anywhere throughout my day that someone might come in contact with [them],” says Green. “Shopping, at a café, bus stops, pay phones, hidden in napkin dispensers of restaurants.” Wanting to do something “quirky and fun” that would impact another’s day for the better, the bubbly Drumheller native started making the palm-sized cards out of colourful cardstock and decorating them with everything from stickers to ribbons to googly eyes and garnished with an encouraging message or quote. Green, a vivacious and talented individual, regularly dances during her photo shoots and describes the perfect moment captured as “juicy.” A professional, full-time photographer for over three years under the name Photos With Ashley, she says, “I’ve always had a passion for making people smile and feel awesome.” At first, Green kept the Love Letters 2 Strangers project to herself and a close group of friends, but as word got out the popularity has mushroomed. While volunteering at a Christian youth camp, Green told the kids she was working with about the love letters. “The response from the youth was amazing,” she says. “I realized I had to start sharing this with other people.” She began doing workshops out of her own living room, but the project’s popularity quickly led to needing a bigger space.

• Manual Shift car available • Day, Evening and Saturday hours available

In fact, at her February 2013 workshop, 60 volunteers created over 1,000 love letters that were distributed around Edmonton, AB, in the days leading up to Valentine’s Day – tucked under windshield wipers, bicycle seats, handed out on public transportation or in shopping malls, and more. “We spent probably just over four hours distributing letters within three days,” Green said. “It’s kind of like an explosion of love letters.” The Valentine’s Day distribution garnered a huge response, both in the media and from the love letter recipients.

“People are all made beautiful and to love.”

worthy

Most of the notes were accepted with a smile or thank you, while other people responded with a hug or high five. One man even bought coffee for the letter givers. Each note has a sticker on the back with the project’s web address, and recipients provide wonderful feedback. “Some people say ‘the letter saved my life,’ or gave them hope for the future, helped them make a difficult decision or feel worthy of loving.” Green says one woman called her after receiving a love letter and said her father had passed away a few days before. She was in Canada from the U.S. for the funeral, and the letter helped her feel strong and not alone. Green’s strength to launch the project and keep it going comes from God. “I take a lot of my inspiration and strength from God and my own faith. Growing up, that was a big part of my life and it has

shaped me to be the kind of person that gives back, loves their neighbour and shows kindness in unlikely opportunities. “Although the project itself is not tied to any religion or faith, my own personal beliefs have definitely been a factor in me wanting to start and grow this project.” Though the project won a $1,000 grant from the Awesome Foundation in Edmonton last year for “spreading the love,” donations are in great demand as the project grows and impacts the lives of more and more people throughout Canada. Green now does workshops every couple of months all over Alberta with new chapters starting in Calgary, Grand Prairie, Drumheller (her hometown), and in Ontario. To respond to the project’s growing popularity, Green is forming a committee designed to foster additional leaders and help others start Love Letters 2 Strangers chapters in their own hometown. Her goal is to run the project as a nonprofit organization, creating committees to generate funding, and get into schools as part of anti-bullying campaigns. “We need to go about this like a real organization, to solidify ourselves with a core team of marketing and financial skills so we can handle the response and do bigger things,” she explains. It’s all about spreading the love. “My favourite responses to love letters are those that come in from letters I know I haven’t handed out,” Green says. “People are all made beautiful and worthy of love. I’m just doing unto others as I would have them do to me.” As she writes on her website, “My intent, and the project’s intent, is nothing more than do some good and spread some love, not because this city is lacking in it, but because there is always, always room for more.”

Don’t Forget About Forgiveness “No, no, I just reinvested it,” I tried to explain. Then she laughed. I breathed a sigh of relief. Everything was okay! But everything wasn’t okay. Periodically, she’d say something like, “I can’t believe you stole my money.” She said it lightheartedly, and it took awhile before I realized something was bothering her. So one day, I asked her why she kept referring to it. “Gary, you don’t understand that you stole my money, and you haven’t given it back. I don’t know what account that money is in, so I don’t have access to it. It’s not even in my name.” I didn’t understand why she was upset, but decided to fix things. “What do I need to do to repair this situation?” I asked. “Go to the bank and get a cashier’s cheque for the amount you withdrew – plus interest. Then give me the cheque.” Even though it didn’t seem like a big deal to me, I needed to make things right because it was

Seriously, You Could Be Just Like Oprah!

One of Time’s Most Influential People of both the 20th and 21st centuries. Host for 25 years of a multi-award winning talk show with millions of adoring fans. Billionaire. Oprah Winfrey became the “best friend in our living room” as she doled out advice and inspiration. On her recent tour, An Evening With Oprah Winfrey, fans hung onto every word the “voice of their generation” spoke – even an admonition of vulnerability. “Even me, who gets so much validation every day when I walk through the streets … I still, in my private moments, want to know, ‘Do you hear me? Do you see me?’ ” she said in Vancouver, BC. “I just want what I have been saying to be validated.”

You’d think a media mogul certainly would not be concerned about measuring up in the eyes of others. But clearly, even someone with seemingly everything still feels insecure. It’s easy to see people striving to keep up with the Joneses. Building high-status careers, getting top grades, buying the latest gadget, raising the perfect family – the need for recognition is everywhere. Unfortunately, no matter how much effort goes in, complete validation never seems to come. Just ask Oprah. There is Someone though, who isn’t looking for top performance, big bucks, or the perfect body. He’s just looking for you. The Bible says that while all have

sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23), the good news is God has made a way for you to be “accepted into the Beloved” (Ephesians 1:6). It doesn’t matter what you have or haven’t done, He offers the ultimate acceptance through His Son, Jesus Christ – who loves you so much He died to pay the penalty for your sins. That’s how much you are valued by God. When you recognize that fact and admit you need a Saviour, you will be fully validated in His eyes – forever. Nothing compares. As Paul wrote in the Bible, “I think all things are worth nothing, compared to the greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (Philippians 3:8). Once you’re validated by God, you

will no longer feel the need to be validated by others. Are you ready to receive the ultimate validation and begin an eternal relationship with Jesus? Simply pray this prayer with all your heart: Dear God, I admit I’ve done and said things that are sinful in Your eyes. Please forgive me! I believe Your Son Jesus Christ died – and rose again – to pay the penalty for my sins. I receive your grace and mercy and accept the Lord Jesus as my Saviour. I give You my life from this day forward. Please help me to live for You and transform me into the likeness of Jesus. In Your Name I pray, Amen

When celebrating the beginning of summer with a family vacation, you’re bound to think of famous attractions, sandy beaches, or cozy getaways. But if you’re looking for something new to top the memory books, check out the only US destination on Travel + Leisure’s hot travel destinations for 2013 — Minneapolis, Minn. Not only that, the city has been consistently ranked highly on 133 lists of accolades in 2013, including outlets like Lonely Planet, Forbes, CNN, and many more. Time to see what everyone’s talking about! It’s a city unlike any other: the mighty Mississippi, a chain of 22 beautiful lakes, and 200 miles of trails within the city, literally steps away from incredible shopping, lively communities, and the most vibrant arts and music scene outside New York City. There’s tons of ways to see the city. Explore on your own, take a streetcar whose operator offers colourful commentary, steamboat along the Mississippi, or even rent a bike or segway. Minneapolis puts the “great” in the great outdoors. Seek out the sun and make a splash by heading down to Lake Calhou. Drop by the beach for swimming, canoeing, angling, or even windsurfing. The city skyline is a breathtaking backdrop for trails circling the lake where the whole family can hike, bike, or in-line skate. By no means make that your only lake stop though. Each in the chain has something to draw you in. For example, Lake Harriet offers free outdoor concerts. The Mississippi River offers up just as many memories, delighting the outdoorsy with parks, picnic areas, landmarks, and monuments from the rich history of the area. Hop aboard a paddlewheeler for a leisurely cruise down the waterway. Done getting your own exercise and ready to watch others get some — while cheering for the

Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell feels blessed to celebrate 20 years by Amanda Krieger

business pretty early on. It helped me change my priorities and find balance between what’s really important in life.” Because of his experience, Littrell founded Brian Littrell’s Healthy Heart Club. The organization helps raise money, support, and educate parents who have children with heart conditions. Littrell was born in Lexington, KY, and grew up singing in the church choir. While his small-town roots help keep him grounded, he says he gets true guidance from Jesus Christ. “When I left home to be a Backstreet Boy, it was such a shock. My faith helped me stay on course. Anybody can get too big for their britches, especially when the world is handed to you,” he says. “No amount of fame or money will guard you from difficulty. Sometimes, even for pop stars, the train derails. You have to have a relationship with Jesus Christ to get you back on track.” Littrell became a Christian when he was eight years old. He was sitting in the church balcony listening to his pastor talk about how the Bible says Jesus will knock on the door of your heart, and you have to let Him in. “I felt like the pastor was looking right at me, and I rushed down from my seat. I wanted to know this God who will pardon all my sins, who took on my iniquity and forgave me,” Littrell recalls. He says his success as a Backstreet Boy is a gift from God, “[Before BSB] I was used to singing in the church choir and in drama, for like 100 people. God has given me this gift and given me the chance to be a Backstreet Boy, and I want to use it for Him.” Littrell’s faith has helped him maintain a sense of who he is, and of what’s important in life. “The message I want people to hear is that you have to stand for something you believe in. I stand for my family, I stand for my faith, and I stand for my God.”

“We didn’t want to go out while there was still music left in our hearts.”

He has performed on thousands of stages for millions of screaming fans. The songs he’s famous for singing have been played immeasurable times on radio stations and CD players across the world. Brian Littrell has been a member of wildly-popular boy band Backstreet Boys for more than half his life. But even after an incredible two decades in the business and more than 130 million records sold worldwide, Littrell is still surprised by the group’s tremendous success. “I never set out to be a Backstreet Boy, I never imagined all of this would happen,” he says. An entire generation grew up with music made famous by the Backstreet Boys (BSB), and, in a different way, so did the members of the band. Littrell was just 18 years old when he joined the group. Now, singing songs like “Quit Playing Games (With my Heart)” and “I Want It That Way” is like second nature to him. He joined BSB at the suggestion of his cousin, Kevin Richardson, who was already part of the group. “I was a kid when I left home to join the Backstreet Boys,” he says. “And now it’s been 20 years! Time goes by fast!” Since the five members of the Backstreet Boys – Littrell, Richardson, Nick Carter, A.J. McLean, and Howie Dorough – first came together on April 20, 1993, they’ve earned seven Grammy nominations, two American Music Awards, seven Billboard Music awards, and two MTV Music Awards. They now have their very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But they’re not done yet. “We’ve always felt like we had music left to sing … We didn’t want to go out while there was still music left in our hearts,” Littrell explains. “We’re working on our legacy. The Backstreet Boys are husbands and fathers. We’re not kids, we’re all grown men now.” He married actress and model Leighanne Wallace, who he met at the video

shoot for “As Long as You Love Me,” in September 2000. They have a 10-year-old son. In April, the band celebrated their 20year anniversary — a milestone they’re marking with an album showcasing the Backstreet Boys’ past and showing fans how the band has changed and grown. “This album and all the music on it is really close to our hearts. It has the same sound, but the music is different. A lot of it is acoustic-driven, and our dynamic has changed. It’ll sound like the Backstreet Boys, after 20 years of growing up.” The band is an integral part of Littrell: a husband, father, uncle, and Backstreet Boy. It’s obvious the music’s ingrained in him (he breaks into song midconversation) and it’s also obvious he’s still humble, despite international fame and success. “I look at this as a huge blessing. We’re glorified as pop stars, and I feel like I don’t deserve that. What I do every day is go to work and share something I’m passionate about.” Littrell got a reality check early in his career with a life or death situation. Born with a heart murmur, he was hospitalized at age five for a severe bacterial infection. “I wasn’t supposed to live. [Doctors said] I had zero per cent chance of living. It’s only by the grace of God that I’m here today,” he tells Living Light News. In 1997, when BSB was gaining success, Littrell started experiencing chronic fatigue and doctors discovered his heart had grown dangerously large. “Backstreet Boys was exploding across the world, and I was in the middle of a battle to save my life,” Littrell remembers. In 1998, he underwent open heart surgery to correct the enlargement and repair a hole in his heart. “The experience helped me realize how much this was about the fame and money for some people. There were lots of people around me who were using me for fame,” he says. “It was a really growing experience; I realized a lot of the harsh realities of the

Living Light News - May/June 2013 HAWK NELSON Made hawknelson.com Review by Matt Conner Hawk Nelson faces a new frontier after longtime front man Jason Dunn left to pursue a solo career, but the celebrated rock band remains in good hands even as veteran members change roles. Guitarist Jonathan Steingard takes over vocal duties on the band’s new album Made, and his tender, clear tenor fits perfectly atop Hawk Nelson’s buoyant pop/rock. After more than a decade, it’s not surprising to find the band growing up with their audience. The playful tone from previous albums is found throughout Made, but deeper and more substantive tracks like lead single “Words,” which features MercyMe’s Bart Millard, showcases a new side of the band quite well. The simple acoustic pop refrain on “Faithful” not only shows off Steingard’s vocal ability but also serves as a standout track as a reminder of God’s character. Steingard sings, “No matter how many stars fall down/I’m covered under the peace I’ve found.” The same themes pervade “Through The Fire” and “Love Like That,” and it’s clear Hawk Nelson might make some inspirational waves with this album alongside their typical rock appeal. Hawk Nelson is technically a band in transition, but they sound completely at home despite the changes. Longtime fans will enjoy the new album, but expect some new fans to tune in to these meaningful tracks as well. JARS OF CLAY Under The Weather jarsofclay.com Review by Josh McConnell The last time Jars of Clay hit the new release wall was in late 2010 with The Shelter. There has been very little news on the band after that, but only because they were on the road. Touring very extensively through 2012, Jars of Clay wanted to make sure fans at home knew the band was still thinking about them. Enter their latest EP. Titled Under The Weather (Live in Sellersville, PA), the band took their 22-song set list and released a small collection of live songs that captures the live experience for their fans. With only six songs, the live EP covers the band’s discography with songs such as “Frail,” “Worlds Apart,” “Eyes Wide Open,” and “Dead Man.” Jars of Clay display their expertise well in the concert arena. All of the songs have a complex, smoky ambience with plenty of texture. Despite being live versions of popular songs, the laidback tracks still hold your attention without the need for uptempo anthems. Available exclusively in digital format, those who choose to purchase the album through Jars of Clay’s website directly will also receive a few extra goodies such as a brand new song and live videos. Under The Weather is short and sweet, and fans will no doubt love it. JJ WEEKS BAND All Over The World jjweeksband.com Review by Matt Conner Pop music fans looking for the next act positioned to break out, look no further than the JJ Weeks Band. With an easy, accessible approach both lyrically and musically, Weeks and company are well positioned to follow in the footsteps of chart-topping giants

JukeBox like MercyMe and Casting Crowns. All Over The World is the band’s major label debut (Inpop), and they were smartly placed with producer Scott Wilbanks (Third Day). The end result is a succinct 10-song package that blends positive midtempo songs with meaningful ballads that weave together a hopeful theme while acknowledging the struggles of life. “Is It Ever” opens the album with a number of commonly asked questions about faith, doubt and the struggles of life. It opens a door for the rest of the album to focus on the hope and love of God in the midst of it all, especially with tracks like “What Kind of Love” and “Let Them See You.” Armed with Weeks’ strong vocal and the band’s well-rounded production, All Over The World is a strong, smart debut that’s bound to cinch a Best New Artist nomination at next year’s Dove Awards. MARTIN SMITH God’s Great Dance Floor – Step 01 martinsmith.tv Review by Josh McConnell We all knew we wouldn’t be seeing the last of Martin Smith when his popular band Delirious? called it quits back in 2009. As one of worship music’s leading songwriters, the U.K. band’s frontman has songwriting flowing through his veins. Thankfully, Smith decided to stay in the industry longer and slowly released new music throughout 2012. Now compiled into a full album, God’s Great Dance Floor - Step 01 features 10 songs from the renowned songwriter. Picking up right where he left off with Delirious?, Smith’s new material has a very Brit-rock flavour. Songs are intricate enough to keep listeners interested, but simple enough to be replicated from the stages of churches around the world. The key is to remember that Smith is not trying to compete with pop groups for mass appeal. Instead, he knows his niche and is serving it skillfully. Smith has been one of the leading forces in worship innovation and that doesn’t stop with God’s Great Dance Floor - Step 01. It features impressive production, engaging lyrics and music that should please the masses. If you are a fan of the genre, expect another solid effort from one of worship’s biggest players. SEVENTH DAY SLUMBER Love & Worship seventhdayslumber.com Review by Lindsay Williams In recent years, Seventh Day Slumber has traded large arena rock for worship-filled sets. Their latest, Love & Worship, finds the popular youth group band covering 10 well-known modern worship selections. Produced by Brent Milligan (Backstreet Boys, Steven Curtis Chapman), Love & Worship contains songs written by top worship leaders of the day, including Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman, and Joel Houston. Frontman Joseph Rojas lends his thick vocals to familiar anthems like “Our God,” “10,000 Reasons,” “Forever Reign,” and “Never Let Go.” Instead of mimicking the original versions, Seventh Day Slumber chose to add its unique spin to these songs – a smart move. Highlights include “Desert Song,” which crescendos into a powerful anthem, and “White Flag,” which begins as a sparse acoustic number, choosing to grow slowly, instead of holding on to the original’s driving guitar backbeat. While Rojas’ delivery has hints of Incubus and Nickelback, the whole of Love & Worship is fairly mellow and mild.

21 “Here With You” is the only original cut, written from the perspective of Jesus. Through the lyrics, Christ identifies with human feelings of loneliness, betrayal and pain. The song melds in effortlessly with the other covers. Love & Worship is a solid effort; however, Seventh Day Slumber would do well to incorporate more of their own music into future studio recordings, setting them apart from an abundance of modern worship saturating the marketplace. SHAWN MCDONALD The Analog Sessions shawmcdonaldmusic.com Review by Josh McConnell Sometimes artists are so good at what they do that they actually fly under the radar. They aren’t mainstream enough to be front and centre in the public spotlight, but are so talented it’s easy to get lost in their music every single time. These artists are like friends you can always count on when you need them. Shawn McDonald is one of those artists. After four studio albums, McDonald has proven his consistent musical abilities that continue to impress. But just when we begin to toss around the word “consistent,” McDonald gives us a curveball with his newest effort. Titled The Analog Sessions, the 12-song disc is a more stripped down, acoustic, and intimate version of some of his past work. “The idea was to re-record everything to give the songs a fresh and different approach,” said McDonald, who recorded the album using the old school way – hence the album title. Popular tunes “Take My Hand” and “Gravity,” for example, are downright engaging after being sped up and acoustified. Feeling like a mix of Jason Mraz and Kris Allen, Shawn McDonald’s The Analog Sessions is refreshingly good. McDonald’s attention to detail is evident through the new song arrangements and gives us an album dripping of musical talent. Regardless of whether you’ve listened to his past material or not, The Analog Sessions is worth every cent. TAL & ACACIA Black & White talandacacia.com Review by Lindsay Williams Pop duo Tal & Acacia return with their sophomore effort following their 2010 debut, Wake Me (Essential). On Black & White, the sisters forego major label backing and procure the reigns independently. Their sound, not unlike those of mainstream counterparts Feist or Imogen Heap, bounces between airy pop and acoustic fare. The laidback blend of their voices takes listeners back in time as the sisters’ music contains an infectious retro flair, yet the experimental nature of this collection makes Tal & Acacia’s brand of faith-based pop all the more en vogue. While the dozen songs on Black & White seamlessly flow into one another with a roll-your-windows-down ease, the sultry “Stone” stands out with its gritty lyrics. Meanwhile, the reverent “Ninety-Three,” with lyrics straight from the Bible’s Psalm 93, shines with the combination of their light, dainty voices. The powerfully sparse “Hands” recalls an Adele-like vocal and a beautiful melody. From upbeat ’70s throwbacks to lush acoustic ventures, Tal & Acacia showcase rare talent and a quirky musical aptitude. Listening to Black & White is akin to finding yourself in an antique store, every gem laced with whispers of someone’s story from long ago, transporting you to another time and place. The sisters intertwine stories of love and faith through the muted colours of their new album. Tal & Acacia bring a stylish sound to Christian music, and fans of vintage pop will, no doubt, gravitate to Black & White.

Jenn Gotzon does an extremely good job of portraying Megan in God’s Country. She’s perfect for the role. Having known Jenn for years, it’s gratifying to see she can play a person who’s nothing like herself in real life. The plotline is positive and redemptive, with no foul language or violence to watch out for. The Gospel is woven into the story in a very plausible way. Some of the dialogue is stilted, but most of it is very good. God’s Country, set against the exquisite backdrop of the Mojave Desert and rooted in real life events, is worth watching,

DOWNSIDE UP by Tracey Mitchell

HOW TO RAISE SELFLESS KIDS by Dave Stone

Tracey Mitchell has taken a challenging topic and turned it into a helpful handbook for anyone that has ever felt the sting of rejection. And, as the author reveals, she has found that people everywhere have experienced the pain of rejection. What to do when it happens? That is the theme of this book and the solutions it provides are both practical and encouraging. Throughout the book, Mitchell offers specific examples of the many types of rejection that can have a devastating effect on how we view ourselves and how we respond to others. Chapters like “Conquering The Need To Be Perfect” and “Divas, Deceivers, And Drama Queens” provide excellent insight into some of the factors that may be affecting our lives. To help the reader put the advice into action, the author follows each chapter with a summary of the principles, an action plan, and quotes from Scripture to reinforce the lesson. Tracey Mitchell has both sympathy and empathy for those who have been wounded in this way. Read this easy to follow yet thought-provoking book, and discover how to transform your experiences of rejection into a golden opportunity.

Many parents unknowingly teach their children that the world revolves around them. Dave Stone, senior pastor and father of three, says we can teach our children to put others’ needs before their own. But focusing on others does not happen by accident; it means breaking away from cultural norms. In a society of self-entitlement, Stone urges parents to aim at a different target than most people do. By teaching children to look beyond themselves and to take a stand against the self-absorbed, “me first” attitudes of this generation, Stone believes it’s possible to create families that are Christ-focused and sensitive to others. Children can learn to turn the spotlight on others by following Jesus’ example through serving, giving, encouraging, forgiving, and accepting others. Part of the Faithful Families series, this book is full of practical guidance delivered in a fresh and fun style. A bold blue colour highlights each chapter page, section heading, as well as key words and phrases making them stand out for easy reading. Stone’s mixture of humour, wisdom and inspiring stories makes this book an enjoyable and valuable resource for any parent.

THE 10-SECOND RULE by Clare de Graaf

FRED 2.0 by Mark Sanborn

What is The 10-Second Rule? Clare de Graaf shares his journey of living by this rule: Just do the next thing you’re reasonably certain Jesus wants you to do – and do it within the next 10 seconds. It sounds simple but de Graaf writes honestly about his own resistance. The book is inspirational, and can be a bit painful in its confrontations, but still affirming at the same time. De Graaf pokes fun at his own reluctance to show acts of kindness to random strangers. He talks about chickening out – hence the urgency to act within the next 10 seconds. He explores the joys of overcoming his fear and reaching out to others and how his colleagues sometimes win and sometimes struggle, too. Some have paid for groceries for harried single mothers or prepaid for coffee for the next person in line. One gentleman slated to fly first-class traded his seat with a wheelchair-bound lady. He helps the reader make what he calls “pre-decisions” to do the right thing to help others. The goal is to go from living a rule to turning it into a lifestyle so you can enjoy an adventure-filled relationship with God each day. De Graaf includes some helpful resources such as a study guide, a website and Facebook pages. He intentionally wrote the book to be read in just a few hours, or digested in shorter timeframes. Less time reading, more time doing!

It’s easy to get a little skeptical of “how-to” books and motivational speakers, and for good reason. People who want to get ahead, or others who just want to get out of their rut, have been easy prey for the glitzy, fast-talking, used car salesmen types who offer a quick fix. But Mark Sanborn is not that type. He offers wisdom gleaned from his encounter with a real person – his postal carrier Fred Shea – whom he watched for over a decade. Shea took the ordinary work of delivering the mail and turned it into the extraordinary as he made meaningful connections with his clients every day. Following up on The Fred Factor, Sanborn’s bestselling book with over 1.6 million copies sold, Fred 2.0 presents tools to help businesses and individuals make the Fred Factor a reality in their personal encounters. The four principles of the Fred Factor are: 1. Everyone makes a difference, 2. Everything is built on relationships, 3. You must continually create value for others, and it doesn’t have to cost a penny, and 4. You can re-invent yourself regularly. This book is a series of stories paired with great principles that highlight the Fred Factor in the lives of countless individuals, businesses, and even cities, who have modeled themselves after Shea’s humble but extraordinary commitment to both God and his work. Purchase both of these books for family and friends ... they’re that good!
