ags to riches. Manny Pacquiao lived it twice. It began in the Philippine village of Kibawe where Pacquiao grew up dirt poor. “When I was young, my parents were jobless,” he told CNN. “We had no home. Sometimes we can’t even afford to have a single meal a day.” His parents separated, leaving him with his mom and five siblings. At 14, he ran away to Manila – a metropolis of over 11 million – to help provide for his family. In the nation’s capital, Manny lived in a park and slept under a cardboard box. streets, working as a rich man’s servant. He also boxed. “I started boxing when I was 12,” he tells The Telegraph. “If you won you got 100 pesos ($2) and if you lost you got 50. I won and, at the time way back in 1992 or ’93, it was big money for me. I gave it to my mother.” The meager earnings helped the malnourished boy to survive. In 1995 at age 16, he became a professional boxer. At just 4-foot-11 and 98 lbs, Pacquiao put weights in his pockets to make the 105-pound light flyweight limit. He won his pro debut via unanimous decision.

The up-and-coming pugilist catapulted to the world stage after meeting trainer Freddie Roach in 2001. PacMan won one world title after another, becoming the sport’s first and only eight-division world champion. The humble boxer’s professional record speaks for itself – 54 wins, 38 by knockouts. At only 5-foot-7, he’s out-slugged boxing legends Oscar De La Hoya and Shane Mosley. Numerous organizations have named him “Fighter of the Decade.” Hailed as one of the best pound for pound fighters, Pacquiao’s explosive style has resulted in some of boxing’s most sensational fights.

As he’s accumulated victories, his earnings – estimated at $67 million last year – have exploded. Known for his generosity, Pacquiao is a larger-than-life figure adored by Filipinos worldwide. His boxing prowess has enabled him to become a congressman, an actor, and a recording artist. The entire country comes to a halt whenever he fights. Crime rates even drop. continued on page 2

Now I have that.” “When you accept Jesus Christ in your life as your Lord and Saviour you have eternal life,” an exuberant Manny proclaims to a crowd in a local gymnasium. He is now a spiritual battler for God, passionately sharing the new life he’s found in Christ. Evangelical pastor Jeric Soriano, Pacquiao’s spiritual advisor, meets regularly with the boxer to study the Bible. “I said ‘Wow, this guy is really hungry for the Word,’ ” he said in an exclusive interview with ABS-CBN’s Dyan Castillejo. Pacquiao quit his vices, sold businesses that involved gambling, and asked forgiveness from his wife. “Our lives were like a roller coaster ride,” Jinkee said on HBO’s 24/7. “Now it’s very different than before. It’s full of trust. Now we have a happy life together.” This spiritual transformation changed the way Manny looks at his boxing career, seeing it as a platform to share his new life in Jesus Christ. Since the longtime Catholic has become a born again Christian, Pacquiao’s faith has been tested. He lost a highly questionable decision to Timothy Bradley and suffered a stunning knockout by longtime nemesis Marquez.

In his homeland, where about a third of the 96 million people live in poverty, his unlikely success story inspires people to dream. As Roach explains, “He’s an icon, because he represents the hopes of so many people.” Following years of success, personal struggles started to emerge, particularly after a subpar fight against Juan Manuel Marquez in 2011. Pacquiao’s excessive drinking and womanizing ultimately left his marriage in shambles. Reports suggest his wife Jinkee threatened to file for divorce. “It really shook him up,” Roach told Sports Illustrated. Despite earning an average of $25 million per bout, his gambling losses got so huge he was forced to ask for advances. “[Manny] had one of the worst gambling habits of any athlete I’ve ever known,” legendary Top Rank Boxing promoter Bob Arum told Sports Illustrated. “He was addicted to it.” Pacquiao found himself flat on the mat, and the only way up was God. When he started reading in the Bible about everything Jesus Christ Timoffers, Tebowhe surrendered his life to Him. “My spirit now is alive,” Pacquiao shared on a Rappler.com

after the murder. “I tried to talk him into getting some counseling for it, he rejected that advice and I got triggered back into our adolescent family dynamics. And pretty much I just said, ‘Whatever. I’m not gonna go there.’ ” The year was 2005. The professor was enjoying a late summer in Paris with his wife Kirby. He’d taken a two-month vacation to rest and rejuvenate before heading to Cambridge University as a visiting research scholar. And then the phone rang. He learned that Mike had committed suicide. He was devastated. “I had a lot of self-condemnation,” he admits. “I had dealt with many people who are resistant to advice right away, and as a clinical psychologist, you don’t give up and say ‘Whatever.’ ” For Worthington, it took three years of “step-byfaltering-step” before he felt completely set free from his own prison. But with God as his lifeline, he made it. “One of my favourite verses is Psalm 16:11: ‘Thou will show me the path of life. In Thy presence there’s fullness of joy; at Thy right hand there’s pleasures forevermore.’ “That verse was a very healing verse for me, to restore me back into the presence of God where I had tried to build this wall between myself and God.” He shares his arduous journey in his most recent book, Moving Forward (WaterBrook Multnomah), combining his personal experience and professional expertise to help others find a way to self-forgiveness. Having experienced forgiveness from both sides, Worthington has embraced a life mission: “to promote forgiveness in every willing heart, home, and homeland.” “My testimony in Moving Forward is that God loves and thus heals. There are many ways to receive healing, but the ultimate source of all is through Jesus,” he writes. “Through your journey, remember Galatians 5:1: “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.” “The (defeat) is part of boxing,” he told The Philippine Daily Inquirer. “I accept 100 per cent what happened in the last fight.” Pacquiao’s upcoming bout with Brandon Rios on Nov. 24 may be his last shot at redemption. “I have been training very hard for this fight and right now I feel like I am 25 years old and training that way,” says the soon to be 35-year-old. “My stamina and my quickness and power are there and I am very excited about that.” Win or lose, the fighter says he’s already found his ultimate redemption in Jesus Christ. “Manny Pacquiao went from nothing to something,” he said in a 700 Club Asia interview. “God used me as ... an example, that no matter how much success you achieve in life, no matter how much you strive daily, if you don’t have God in your life, you’re nothing.”

Newsbriefs Pitting Prayer Against Pirates HOLLYWOOD, CA — Moviegoers know Captain Richard Phillips as the hero portrayed by Tom Hanks in the major motion picture Captain Phillips released in October. The film was based on the true story of Phillips, a merchant mariner, and his crew’s dangerous encounter with Somali pirates who held the captain hostage on April 8, 2009. In an attempt to outsmart the invaders, the MV Maersk Alabama crew succeeded in capturing the pirates’ leader. But the pirates, armed with AK-47 rifles, demanded to have Phillips as an exchange in an attempt to escape. “The leader came down, got in the boat and then they didn’t

exchange me,” Phillips told CBN. The pirates took a lifeboat from the ship and for three days, Phillips was held hostage. On April 12, 2009 the Navy SEALS shot three of the pirates and captured one, freeing Phillips from his harrowing ordeal. In his days of captivity, the captain said he prayed to God. “I prayed for strength, that God would work, that God will let me have the strength to continue and know when to escape, and patience to wait for that time,” he told CBN. “There is power in prayer and it did help me.” Captain Phillips also published a book, A Captain’s Duty, where he spoke about his experience.

Singing For Change EDMONTON, AB — Three-time Covenant Award winners, Tenore, will be performing in Edmonton in November. The group – Jason Catron, Kevin Pauls and Mark David Williams – returned recently from Kampala, Uganda after visiting the group’s adopted girl and working with the Watoto Children’s Choir. The faith-based group is founded by Jill Ann Siemens, who also founded the multiplatinum quartet The Tenors. The Victoria, B.C. composer has a passion for helping the world’s vulnerable and needy. Through Siemens’ vision, The Tenors have raised millions of dollars that benefits Bulembu International, a small Swaziland

town that cares for orphans and abandoned children. Siemens continues this vision with Tenore partnering with the Watoto Children’s Choir. “Our overall mission is to bring joy and healing through our music,” Siemens said prior to leaving for Uganda. “However, I think God’s plan is to reveal Himself to us in the faces of those beautiful orphans so that when we come back to North America ... we [can] bring the hearts of those children in Watoto back to our fans.” Tenore is now on a multi-city tour in Canada with two stops in Edmonton: Spruce Grove Alliance Church (Nov. 17) and The Winspear Centre (Nov. 29). City Commends Consuegra MANHATTAN, NY — The video of bikers attacking an SUV in Manhattan went viral, but the hero – until recently – went unnoticed. A bystander who placed himself in danger to protect the victim of a violent assault was recently honoured in New York. Sergio Consuegra was on his way to church when he saw an angry group of bikers swarming a black SUV with a flat tire. It all started on Manhattan’s West Side Highway when a biker slowed in front of, and was bumped by, the SUV. A chase ensued and when the SUV was caught in traffic, the bikers began their attack. Nobody was brave enough to stop the assault as bikers smashed a window and pulled the driver, Alexian Lien, out of the Range Rover. One of the bikers started pulling Lien’s wife out of the SUV and told her “You’re gonna

get it too!” The crowd yelled for him to stop, and he backed off. The couple’s two-year-old girl was also in the car. Seeing a biker pummeling Lien with a helmet, Consuegra stepped in and shielded him with his body. While the 50-year-old New Yorker told reporters he felt “intense danger,” he also said he “felt God was with [him] there” and he had to act fast. “I said ‘Oh I gotta do something, there’s a family in danger here,” Consuegra told ABC News. Showing the bikers he didn’t want to engage in confrontation, he spread his arms to cover Lien. “I said stop it, let it go,” he told Associated Press. When the bikers retreated, Consuegra called police. The Good Samaritan was honoured in a ceremony last month, and told the media, “I do not call myself a hero because I wish I could have done more.”

‘Mutti’ Rests In Her Maker BERLIN, DE — For the third time in a row, German voters have placed Angela Merkel at the country’s helm. On Sept. 22, the Christian Democratic Union obtained their most support in 20 years at 41.5 per cent. Presently, the pragmatic Merkel is considered Europe’s most powerful leader. She’s been compared to Russia’s Catherine the Great and Britain’s Margaret Thatcher. Many people are still baffled by her rise to power. Who knew that the quiet former research scientist would become the first female leader of the male-dominated CDU, or the first female Chancellor of Germany? She’s repeatedly proven her political mettle, saving Germany from the European debt crisis. Even

Sandman’s Final Save NEW YORK, NY — This September, the New York Yankees waved goodbye to a legend. Mariano Rivera, the All-Star relief pitcher known for his outstanding cutter and character, pitched for the last time at Yankee Stadium with 48,675 in attendance. The 43-year-old, who as a young boy used milk cartons as makeshift baseball gloves, made an indelible mark in the history of baseball: career saves leader, 13-time All-Star, five-time World Series champ, and a host of other accolades. On Sept. 22, as teammates Derek Jeter and Andy Pettite came to take Rivera out of the game for the final time, Rivera wept as fans gave him a standing ova-

tion. The iconic Panamanian closer would later tell The New York Times, “To be able to finish the way the Lord allowed me to finish, it was spectacular. Thank God for that.” Rivera’s known not only for his cut fastball, but also as a fervent Christian – and he credits God for everything from his cutter to his remarkable 19-season career. “Everything I have and everything I became is because of the strength of the Lord, and through him I have accomplished everything,” he told New York Magazine. “He could give [the cutter] to anyone he wants, but you know what? He put it in me ... to bring glory, not to Mariano Rivera, but to the Lord.”

Quality Service For Over 10 Years - Residential, Commercial & Emergencies

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — When orphan Davion Only spoke in October at a church to search for an adopted family, the 15-year-old didn’t expect such an overwhelming positive response. Born in prison and in foster care all his life, Only spoke before a 300-strong Florida church hoping for a kind couple to take him in. But when the local paper wrote about Only, his heartfelt plea went viral and was met with an outpouring of over 10,000 offers to adopt the young man, including calls from Canada, Mexico, Australia, and the UK. “I know God hasn’t given up on me. So I’m not giving up either,” he told the St. Mark Missionary Baptist

The Golden Age Of Fixing by Phil Callaway

O

We didn’t pitch anything except a baseball that had no cover. together a broken hockey stick. She waxed floors so they would last longer. She hemmed pants and made her own cards. Dad never dreamed of anyone else changing the oil in our car, or of buying shoes when he could hobble over to Mr. Thomas’s Shoe Repair. He showed me how to repair bicycle inner tubes, what a carburetor did, and where to buy string and glue. It’s funny looking back. I thought everyone was as poor as we were, which would have made everyone astoundingly rich. You see, we had a garden. Hand-me-down bicycles. A swimming hole. We grew our own food, crafted our own Christmas ornaments, made our own candles and sold them door to door. I suppose growing up in an age of fixing up showed me that you can refurbish more than radios and lawnmowers and fridges and children’s toys. You can fix friendships. You can mend a marriage. All this talk of the ‘60s has made me a little nostalgic, but the good old days weren’t all good. In fact, the writer of the Bible’s book of Ecclesiastes warned us not to ask “why were the old days better than these, for it is not wise to ask such questions.” That’s Ecclesiastes 7:10. How true. But here is a very wise question to ask. One that can help bring joy to life. What does God require of me today? Micah 6:8 gives the answer, that we act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. Certainly this includes binding up the broken, fixing friendships and mending marriages. Earlier I went out to the trunk of the car and retrieved all those things my wife threw away. I’m gonna go confess this to her now and thank her for knowing what to throw out and what to hang onto. I’m glad she hung onto me, even if she’s about to throw out a tie-dyed shirt from 1969. ne key to our 30-plus-year marriage is that Ramona has been blessed with startlingly low expectations. Today she was ecstatic when I unclogged a sink. I merely ran some water then yelled down the s Phil Callaway hole and it unclogged. She was so happy with me that she hardly knew what to do with herself. But things aren’t always happy in PhilandRamonaville. Sometimes it bugs me that my wife chucks stuff. Today I caught her sneaking two bags of my personal belongings into the trunk destined for the Sally Ann. Perfectly good stuff. Cassette tapes. A beautiful watch. It doesn’t tick, but it has golf club hands. Trousers that fit me nicely … back when I was in high school. I guess I’ll never get to be on that hoarders show. I was raised below the poverty line, so we didn’t pitch anything except a baseball that had no cover. We kept stuff. If it was broke we fixed it. Not my wife. She chucks stuff. But you know, I’m thankful she’s never thrown away the wrong things. A reporter asked a couple how they had managed to stay married for 65 years. The woman replied, “We were born in a time when if something was broken, we would fix it, not throw it away.” It’s one of the keys to the joy-filled life. Following through on what we know to be right, having the humility to work on things when all the world says, “Throw it out and run.” I grew up in the ‘60s, which was the golden age of fixing things. Mom re-used aluminum foil and tea bags. Once she helped me glue and nail

Before All Ages: The Wisdom Of God’s Redemptive Plan by Dr. Charles F. Stanley

T

here is a story more important than any other that’s ever been imagined, spoken, or written. It goes like this: Before man took his first breath of oxygen, God already knew that humankind would one day need rescuing. Sin would enter the human race and break humans’ relationship with the heavenly Father. As a result, all people would die and experience eternity apart from Him. But in the mystery of divine wisdom, the Bible says that “before the foundation of the world” (1 Peter 1:18-20), a plan for our redemption was already in place: God would reach down into the darkness of human sin and redeem us as children of light.

The Timing

Looking back in history, we might wonder what determined the “fullness of time” (Galatians 4:4-5). Why did God arrange to accomplish His redemptive purpose by sending His Son to earth as a baby then? Throughout the ages, some amazing civilizations and kingdoms developed, but God’s appointed time for the arrival of the Messiah came during the Roman Empire. Although we don’t know all the reasons for His choice of this era, we do know that there was an air of expectation in the Jewish community. They probably didn’t expect their Messiah to come as a helpless baby, but they were looking for Him just the same. Everything was in place, and the world was ready for the Saviour.

s Dr. Charles Stanley

The Conception

Jesus was no ordinary baby; His life began before conception. He’s always existed as the eternal Son of God (John 1:1), but came to earth as a baby, miraculously conceived in a virgin’s womb by the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:30-35).

The Place

Hundreds of years before Jesus’ birth, the prophet Micah foretold that a “ruler in Israel ... from the days of eternity” would come from Bethlehem (Micah 5:2). Because of this prophecy, we know that the Messiah had to be born there, but why did God choose this small, insignificant town? A clue is found in the meaning of its name – Bethlehem means “house of bread.” How appropriate that the One who would claim to be “the Living Bread that came down from heaven” (John 6:51) was born in the “house of bread.”

The Setting

If you had been in charge of determining the setting for Jesus’ birth, what environment would you have chosen? I don’t think any of us would have

chosen a stable filled with the odours and sounds of animals, yet that was exactly what God arranged for His beloved Son. Again, the question we ask is “Why?” A manger scene is a quaint setting for a Christmas pageant, but the reality of a dirty, smelly stable seems unfitting for the Son of God. Yet even this location displays the Lord’s wisdom. The manger scene is an illustration of the role Jesus came to fulfill. “The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29) was born among the livestock.

God Of The Lowly

Thanks to the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we can now turn from a life headed toward death and embrace the eternal life God has planned for us. What we need to remember is that eternal life begins now. We no longer have to wander in darkness, because the Great Light has come. Yet there’s something we need to do: to become lowly in heart and humble ourselves in submission to Him. That’s the only way to see His purposes for our lives fulfilled. “In Him we live and move and exist,”

The Lord has done everything to provide for your redemption. The Announcement

After Christ was born, a birth announcement was sent to a group of shepherds out in the field. Why should such lifechanging news be shared with those who had no influence or prestige? Consider how fitting it is for shepherds to be the first to hear that the Good Shepherd had finally come to lay down His life for the sheep (John 10:11).

The Name

Before Christ’s birth, an angel told Joseph to call the baby Jesus, a name that was common in Israel at that time. The Hebrew translation is Joshua, which means “Jehovah’s deliverer.” To call the baby Jesus clearly stated the purpose for which He came – to “save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21).

the apostle Paul once said (Acts 17:28). That means true life begins in God and is sustained by Him. It also means real life continues with Him – never ending but stretching on forever in eternity. I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of a better story than that.

Do You Know God?

The Lord has done everything to provide for your redemption. Now it’s up to you to accept what Christ did on your behalf. He humbled Himself and became a man so He could die in your place to pay the penalty for your sin. But His offer of forgiveness is effective only if you receive it. If you believe that Jesus is the Son of God and trust Him as your Saviour, He’ll forgive all your sins and provide a place for you in heaven (John 14:1-3).

A Worldwide Epidemic seeing Maria’s face on television. Sasha Ruseva’s emotional reaction provided the first clue that eventually solved the puzzle. Through DNA tests, Ruseva, 35, and her husband Atanas, 38, were confirmed to be the girl’s parents. According to the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children, an estimated eight million children are reported missing each year around the world. That’s a huge number, but the Bible says there are a lot more “lost” children than that. Since the first sin of man, people have become separated from God – a condition the Bible defines as being “lost.” God didn’t leave this reunion to happen by chance. He sent Jesus Christ to earth to die on the cross and pay for people’s sins – including

yours. Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, anyone who believes in Him and accepts His sacrifice on their behalf can become a child of God and be adopted into His family (John 1:12). He wants You back. Do you want to be reconciled with your Heavenly Father and be with Him for eternity? Pray this prayer from your heart. Dear God, Thank You for sending Jesus to seek and save the lost. Please forgive me for my sins. I believe that Jesus died on the cross and rose again to pay the penalty so I can be reconciled with You. I accept Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen

When authorities raided a Roma settlement in central Greece in October, they made an unusual discovery. A little girl named Maria was found living with a Bulgarian Gypsy couple who looked nothing like the blond-haired blue-eyed fouryear-old, leading authorities to believe she’d been abducted. After DNA tests proved that Christos Salis, 39, and Eleftheria Dimopoulou, 40, were indeed not her biological parents, an international search was launched to find the mystery girl’s real parents. Authorities received over 8,000 calls from places as far as Japan, Canada and Sweden. Meanwhile, as the news about the girl captured people’s attention far and wide, a Roma woman in Bulgaria burst into tears after

Second The Power of Chances by Belinda Elliott

“We want them to see themselves the way God sees them.” to prison. A carjacking earned him several charges that resulted in a sentence of 41 years. After serving 23 years, he was released and began rebuilding his life. However, he left prison as a new man. While incarcerated and in isolation, he began to read the Bible because it was one of the few books available to him. “I found myself starting to believe it. It wasn’t just a story anymore,” he said. That’s when he began a relationship with Christ and asked Him to forgive his past. He said he enjoyed being a part of Life2

and hopes it helps people realize everyone has the potential to change. “What a person is today doesn’t mean that’s what he will be in 15, 10, or even five years from now,” he said. “If you give people a chance, they can grow.” The exhibit features 35 photographs with text from the parolees offering reflections about their lives. Some write about regrets while others express gratitude that they escaped the dangerous path they were on, Power said. In addition, Life2 offers visitors the opportunity to meet the parolees, ask them questions, and allow them to discuss their new lives. “One photo, their mug shot, is what they all measure themselves by,” Power explains. “We wanted to somehow erase that and let them know this new photograph

is way more ... beautiful than a mug shot. “We want them to see themselves the way their mother sees them and the way God sees them.” Learn more at lifesquared.ca.

Filmmaker Mark Power showcases stories of redemption and second chances in his project Life2. The photo exhibit, which highlights former inmates rebuilding their lives, will be at Red Ribbon Building Gallery Nov. 22-23.

It seems an unlikely pairing – professional photographers and ex-convicts – but the result is a compelling look at forgiveness and second chances. Life2 is a photo exhibit that examines life after prison. Filmmaker Mark Power developed the idea after volunteering as a mentor to former prisoners. “A lot of people transitioning back into society want to lead meaningful lives. I have watched them struggle with society not giving them the opportunity to start over,” he explains. “My preconceptions of who they are were shattered by working with them.” That’s when the idea for Life2 began. Power paired seven former inmates with seven professional photographers who spent time with them and documented their lives. He wanted to offer hope to new parolees re-integrating into society and educate the public to look past the stigma often associated with ex-convicts. “At some point, 98 per cent of prisoners will get out. One day they will go back into the community,” he says. He hopes Life2 will inspire the public to offer former inmates a second chance. As a Christian, second chances are something he strongly believes in. He asked Jesus Christ into his life as a teen and said if not for that, he could have easily ended up on a path similar to the former prisoners he has mentored. “If I had grown up in the environments they grew up in, I would have probably made the same decisions they made to land

in jail,” Power explains. “I was fortunate to have mentors who modelled faith. The way they lived their lives was something I wanted in my own life, and they were modeling their lives after Jesus.” The exhibit not only shares the stories of a group marginalized by society, but it showcases hope – the idea that former prisoners can go on to live amazing stories. Steve, one of the parolees featured in the exhibit, has found that to be true. “I spent years running from God, getting high and doing drugs,” he recalls. It was his quest for drugs that led him

CHRISTMAS IN NOVEMBER

by Elisabeth Handley

No matter how you celebrate the holidays – Santa Claus, the birth of Jesus, or Hanukkah – one custom holds true for all: giving gifts. At Northgate Baptist Church in Edmonton, the women of the church decided to turn a fun event, Christmas in November, into an opportunity to give to others as they feel God gave to them through his Son, Jesus. A “Christmas wonderland” in the middle of November, the event is all about fun, food, laughing and sharing and is open to all. Janae Oostenbrink started Christmas in November five years ago to create a place, “where

women could bring other women from work, their community or family members to come (and enjoy a fun time together),” she says. Gift-giving and making have been a consistent theme throughout Christmas in November’s history. From cookies-in-a-jar to homemade blankets, the women – both from within and outside of the church – have created beautiful gifts during the evening and given them away to recipients in the community. “We have made Christmas treat baskets for our church neighbours that contained hand-crafted blankets, cookies and gift cards,” says Oostenbrink,

to show their appreciation for letting churchgoers park on the streets every week. “Last year, we made baskets for families in need in our church with everything required for a Christmas dinner including gift cards for turkeys.” This year, through their gifts, the ladies of Christmas in November will be touching the lives of this generation, and the one to come. Stepping Stones, a local organization that offers help to pregnant and mothering teens, is opening a new location near Northgate Baptist. When Oostenbrink learned about it, she knew Christmas in November had to help. Having just had 18-month-old baby Jayden herself, she knows that even the simplest of things can add up to a lot of money for a new mom. “I want to put together welcome baskets full of items they might need such as diapers, wipes, onesies, maybe even something just for mom. Something to show them we care and want to help,” she says. These baskets will be a perfect tie-in to the mission of Stepping Stones, which provides hope and support for pregnant and parenting teens in the Edmonton area. Through mentoring they provide

practical support in necessary skills such as breastfeeding, budgeting, nutrition and cooking. Their Care Closet is stocked with clothes for mom and baby, diapers and formula. Stepping Stones provides weekly support groups for new moms to work through parenting issues and build friendships. The organization even provides labour and birth support services – all the things pregnant teens often lack. Oostenbrink is the fourth generation in her family to attend Northgate Baptist. “I accepted Jesus into my life at a young age and never looked back,” she says. “He has touched my family in so many ways I just had to give back some of the love He has shown us over the many years we have been going to Northgate.” Through Christmas in November, Oostenbrink hopes to share her gift with others. “My gift is planning. I spend many hours planning and buying and creating an idea that God has given me and I run with it as far as I can go,” she says. “God always has everything planned for me in my life. I just have to ask and He gives. I hope we are able to show others that they too can use their gifts big and small to show God’s love this Christmas season.” For more information about Christmas in November or to get tickets, go to www.northgatebaptist.ca.

Christmas in November founder Janae Oostenbrink encourages other women to celebrate the season by sharing their gifts to those around them.

Family Traditions:

“Consider starting your own traditions.”

Something Old, Something New! Perhaps your family observes a traditional Christmas dinner with all the clan in attendance. However, if you live far from family, or you’ve downsized, consider starting your own traditions.

by Carolyn Tomlin Artist Norman Rockwell became famous for his portrayal of families, especially during the holiday season.

Keeping Traditions Alive

Traditions are important during the holidays. My family, like many others, continues the custom of serving oyster casserole, a special dish that goes back several generations. As families enjoy this season of the year, take time to relate the traditions you continue and why they are important to remembering our past.

Same Time, Next Year

As seniors, how do you feel when adult children announce they have other plans for the holidays? And that their plan includes just their own family, without the relatives? Change happens. As parents of adult children, give the gift of freedom to your offspring to make different plans.

Developing New Traditions Think of change as growth. Instead of observing the holidays in the same way, think of something new. For example: volunteer this Christmas to serve the main meal at a homeless shelter. Involve grandparents, adult children and

grandchildren. If this is the first time for children to participate, explain what takes place in such a centre. Another approach to developing a new tradition is taking a short winter vacation to a warmer climate. Would escaping a cold Canadian winter – even for a few days – be a special treat? Plan months in advance. Encourage older children and teens to find odd jobs so that everyone contributes to the total cost.

Adapting To A New Environment

Remember when all the family came for Christmas and you spent days preparing everyone’s favourite dish? The turkey came from the oven, golden brown. Homemade rolls and butter melted in your mouth. And the homemade pies were devoured in minutes. Today, you have those cherished memories and you wouldn’t take anything for them. But now you’ve downsized to a small apartment or assisted living. Instead of being in charge of the holiday, someone else prepares the food – and the cleanup. This holiday, thank God for your family and the mental pictures of those days of long ago. But also, thank Him for helping you adapt to another environment that is different but also good. Don’t allow old holiday customs to keep you tied to the past. Think of new ways to spend with your family and friends. Continue to include some of your favourites while making new and exciting traditions.

Wellness

Fill’er Up

... with Fibre

by Beth Bence Reinke, MS, RD

Does eating fibre make you think of wood pulp, bran cereal and celery strings? Well, think again! Fibre-rich foods can be way more appetizing than that — creamy oatmeal, crunchy popcorn and fresh fruit salad. High-fibre foods not only taste good, they’re also major contributors to good health and disease prevention.

What Is Fibre?

Fibre is the component of cell walls that gives plants their shape and stiffness. Even though fibre is a type of carbohydrate, our bodies cannot fully digest it, so it provides no calories. Unlike humans, cows and other ruminant animals have digestive enzymes that can break down fibre, which is why they can survive on grass.

Two Kinds Of Fibre

In Canada, we define fibre using several terms. “Dietary” fibre is a non-digestible, intact carbohydrate found naturally in plants. Examples are lignin and cellulose. “Functional” fibre is also non-digestible, and some types, such as inulin and polyols, may be added to foods during manufacturing. When we add dietary and functional fibre together, it’s called “total fibre,” and that’s the amount we’re talking about when we mention fibre in foods. Many plant foods contain both kinds. Since both types are indigestible, they’re not absorbed into the bloodstream, but stay in the digestive tract to be excreted. Even though fibre cannot be used for

energy or nutrition, it still does good things for the body.

Health Benefits Of Fibre

Fibre is great for digestion and bowel health and is often used to treat constipation and irritable bowel syndrome. Some food fibres function as natural prebiotics in the colon, encouraging the growth of good bacteria. In addition, fibre helps prevent colon cancer by promoting a healthy intestinal pH level and moving toxins through quickly. Another benefit is fibre’s role in reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Soluble fibre works against heart disease by binding with fatty acids in the intestines and helping to lower blood cholesterol levels. It also plays a role in regulating blood sugar. Many fibre-rich foods help with weight loss because they are lower in fat and calories, plus the added bulk helps us feel full longer.

How Much Fibre Do I Need?

Suggested daily intake of total fibre for adults in Canada is 21-25 grams for women and 30-38 grams for men. But for most people, there’s no need to count the grams you’re getting each day. Instead, take a moment at the grocer to compare how many grams each product has and make higher fibre choices. The nutrition label provides the total grams in one serving. Many breakfast cereals are packed with fibre, giving you an easy way to load up early in the day. When increasing your intake, be sure to drink plenty of

Tips for Getting Enough Fibre 1.) Eat several high-fibre foods at every meal. 2.) Snack on veggies, fruit, nuts or popcorn. 3.) Use whole grain breads, whole wheat pastas and brown rice instead of white.

liquids. Add more fibre gradually so your digestive system gets used to it without side effects like gas and bloating.

What About Whole Grains?

Whole grains are made from the entire grain seed, which consists of the bran, germ, and endosperm. That’s why whole grains retain the healthful fibre, vitamins and minerals. In refined grains, the bran is stripped away in processing, along with most of the fibre. Watch out though, because the word “wheat” or “multigrain” on the label does not always mean whole grain. To get real whole grains, look for “100 per cent whole wheat,”“whole oats” or other whole grains as the first or

4.) Eat beans a few times each week. 5.) Add oat bran, oatmeal, or wheat bran to muffins, bread, meatloaf, casseroles or sauces. 6.) Choose whole fruit more often than fruit juice.

second ingredient on the list. Health Canada’s Food Guide suggests making at least half of your grain products “whole grain” each day. To increase your fibre intake, substitute whole grains for their white counterparts and eat more fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds and beans. Variety is a key to getting the maximum health benefits from different antioxidants in plant foods, so choose an assortment of high-fibre foods each day. That’s fibre in a nutshell! Living On the Edge of

When Cassandra Basnett was only eight, she knew she was going to be a missionary. “Everyone thought it was a phase – I mean, I was only eight – but my mom advised me to pray and ask God where He wanted me to go,” recalls the Saskatoon native. With unwavering faith, she did. At age 10, she got her answer – Zaire, now called the Democratic Republic of Congo, located in the heart of Africa. Now 25, Basnett says, “I didn’t know the word, never mind that it was a country in Africa, but God showed me that was where He was sending me.” At age 18, Basnett graduated high school two months early so she could hop a plane to Mozambique with Iris Ministries,

an international Christian humanitarian organization. The three-month program in Mozambique turned into a yearlong sojourn as Basnett waited for an opportunity to go into the Democratic Republic of Congo. From Mozambique, Basnett led a team into DRC for the first time and straight into a war zone. While most people just saw young men carrying guns, Basnett saw something else. “I have a vision for the rebel soldiers,” she says, “to show them how God longs to father them ... not just the victims, but also the perpetrators.” “In my quiet time with Jesus, I sensed him asking, ‘Will you give me five years?’ ” All the while, she kept making more connections while working at a children’s home in Mozambique.

After this first experience, she headed back to Saskatoon where she “holed up with Jesus” for nearly a year praying for guidance about what to do next. After all she’d seen and experienced, she needed “God’s perspective. That nothing is impossible.” Following a trip to Thailand where she spoke to victims of sex trafficking and to Sudan a year later assisting the UN with their child soldier programs, the path she needed to take became crystal-clear. Now, Basnett travels to the Congo and Kenya every few months, establishing schools to liberate child soldiers and save girls from becoming ensnared by sex traffickers. She founded The Freedom Project last year, which gives shelter and support to the child soldiers in Kenya they saved, whom she fondly calls her “Freedom Boys.” So far, Basnett and her team have founded three schools. Every step of Basnett’s journey has been a harrowing exploration of her faith and a total reliance on divine help and direction. “We ask God, literally, every step of the way,” Basnett says. “We get in a vehicle and ask, ‘Where do we go? Which road do we turn onto? When we arrive in a village in rebel territory, we find God’s favour has gone before us. God gives me the words, and the chief allows us to found a school.” She was in the Congo when war broke out last year. “We heard of boys – our boys – being abducted. It just shattered every piece of our hearts.” Boys like Heritage, who, when they met, told Basnett he was 17 years old but she knew was closer to 14. “He couldn’t look us in the eye, he

Cassandra Basnett founded three schools in Africa to rescue child soldiers and exploited girls. For this 25-yearold, life is a journey of seeing the impossible made possible. had been so traumatized. When he told us what he had been through, I had nothing to say in the face of his raw life experience. I prayed with him, and invited Jesus to come close. Heritage prayed for the terrible nightmares and flashbacks he had every night to stop.” They lost touch with Heritage but found him two weeks later. He told Basnett, “Ever since we prayed to Jesus, my nightmares and flashbacks are gone.” He’s now one of Basnett’s Freedom Boys. Prostitution is particularly harsh in Kenya. Basnett’s response was to create Bella House, a one-year rescue and rehabilitation home where child prostitutes, sex-trafficked victims, and sexually exploited children are entered into a program where they receive counselling, care and top-notch education. In September, Basnett’s team drove a rented truck through Rwanda into the Congo bringing 2,500 French books donated by Rock of Ages Church in Saskatoon, and established the first library in the school she founded in Goma. Without a visa and not knowing if they’d be welcomed across the border, Basnett and her team had prayed for “all the right doors to be opened.” Arriving 15 minutes before closing in the pouring rain, they watched in amazement as border authorities hugged them like family and got porters to carry the books for them in the rain. “So ‘impossible’ really isn’t ‘impossible,’ it’s just a task waiting for an adventurer to put one foot in front of the other and discover – we actually have really little to do with it. We just dream and trust. Dream and trust. Like children in our Papa’s arms. And although I guarantee that there will be bumps in the road ... in the end, it’s just all part of the adventure to seeing the impossible made possible,” Basnett writes on her blog. Next, she will travel to Jordan where she and her team will establish a school for refugees from Syria. She has no idea where in Jordan but says with a smile, “We’re supposed to live on the edge of impossible with God.” To find out more, including ways to get involved, go online to justicerising.org and Basnett’s blog, pursuingnormal.com.

Sydney

Finish off the touring at the Australian Museum. Their tours allow kids to get

Old man winter appears to be ready to stay a while, and you just know endless Christmas carols are around the corner – fondly remembering summer days yet? When remembrance turns to desperately wishing for their return, round up the kids, grab the shades, and hop a plane to Sydney, Australia where summer is just starting. The flight can be upwards of 17 hours, so make sure to pack enough to keep the kids occupied, but it’s totally worth it when you step off in the “land of Oz.” Start off at the Sydney Tower Eye – the city’s tallest structure at 250 metres high. Get a bird’s eye view from the observation deck that will steal your breath away. If you’re feeling adventurous, take a skywalk on a glass platform and feel like you’re on top of the world – even from “down under.” Now that you’ve seen it from above, get right in the middle of things with the CitySightSeeing Tour. Hop on a doubledecker bus and travel around the city or out to Bondi Beach. It wouldn’t be a trip to Sydney without making a stop at the iconic Sydney Opera House. Slip beneath the famous sails for special Kids Discovery Tours.

up close and personal with treasures from the past. Who wouldn’t want the opportunity to get a sneak peek at carefully preserved specimens normally reserved for researchers? Get in on the local sports scene with special events taking place. The Emirates Australian Open Golf Championship runs Nov. 28 - Dec. 1, and JetBlack Twenty Four Hours Sydney Race, premier mountain bike race on Nov. 30 - Dec. 1, make for a great weekend of seeing the best in the field compete for their respective titles. Back in the harbour, watch the action on the water with the Sydney Short Ocean Racing Championship in November, where the best ocean racing yachts kick off the season. Take a walk on the wild side at Featherdale Wildlife Park for your chance to cuddle koalas and hand-feed kangaroos! Make sure to bring the camera – you’ll want proof for when you get home. Ready to cool off? Keep an eye peeled for Nemo with Snorkel Safari Australia, based on the Cronulla Coast. With full and half day adventures, it’s a fun and easy way to see the underwater treasures Australia has to offer.

Sights&Sounds

Giving In To The Chase ‘Black Bear,’ the latest album from Andrew Belle, expresses a new sound and faith in God. by Matt Conner and Lailani Mendoza For a guy with zero singing experience, Andrew Belle sounds amazing. The Chicago-based artist recently released his sophomore album Black Bear to rave reviews – a reality that seemed far-fetched to the singersongwriter who insists he wasn’t born a musician. “I started playing in a garage band in high school but I was never really talented as a musician. The one strength that I always felt like I had as a natural was writing, which grew into songwriting,” the 29-year-old reveals in an interview with Star Pulse’s Lisa McGrath. Belle says he had to teach himself how to sing since he “liked writing the words.” “I had never really sung in my life, ever,” he admits. “So yeah, it’s been an interesting writing curve compared to friends who were playing music and singing since they were kids.” He started composing songs on the side while studying business in university. The creative process of combining clever lyrics with catchy melodies sold him on songwriting. By the time he graduated with a marketing degree in 2006, the selftaught musician had written about a dozen songs and learned as much about songwriting as marketing. He decided to pursue music. Thanks to a friend who owned some recording equipment, Belle tried his hand at making an EP. The Illinois native quickly realized there’s a huge leap between composing and recording. “It’s the making it actually interesting and bringing the songs to life with a variety of instruments that’s incredibly hard. You’re quickly

faced with your own limitations,” Belle tells Cargo Collective. Going from recording to performing was another leap. “It was very sobering to be faced with those vocal limitations. I had to teach myself the difference between singing into a microphone while recording versus singing into a microphone in a live scenario.” While his first project was by no means perfect, it offered the fledgling musician an opportunity to hone his craft. It also garnered enough positive encouragement to go the professional route.

His hard work paid off. Belle released a second EP, All Those Pretty Lights, in 2008. The title track would later be featured in ABC’s hit TV show Pretty Little Liars. His move to Nashville in 2009 would signal the beginning of his musical success, sending his professional career into full throttle. The up-and-coming singer was named MTV’s Chicago Breakout Artist in 2009. He also went on a national tour as a member of Tennessee’s prestigious music group Ten Out of Tenn, performing with artists such as Ben Folds and Greg Laswell.

Critics have compared Belle’s smooth-as-honey voice to Coldplay’s Chris Martin, John Mayer, and The Fray. Reviewers describe his music as smart pop – “nuanced melodies and sophisticated, contemplative lyrics coupled with bold, infectious hooks.” His debut album The Ladder was released to rave reviews in 2010, reaching #1 on iTunes’ Singer/ Songwriter Chart. The title track of the album also nabbed him the John Lennon Songwriting Award. For somebody who has likened his progress to “an uphill battle,” this was a remarkable reward. “I certainly didn’t expect it to be so well-received,” he tells Cargo Collective. “It’s been interesting to see the process evolve from that first dorm room recording all the way till now.” Known for his profound lyrics, Belle has also enjoyed commercial success, with his songs featured on TV shows like 90210, Grey’s Anatomy, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, One Tree Hill and even in a Microsoft Windows 7 advertisement. While the pop rocker doesn’t let his achievements go to his head, it has encouraged him to reinvent himself musically from a folk-inspired acoustic music to a more band-inspired sound – again to great success. His latest album Black Bear is another artistic – and personal – reinvention that’s different from his lighter acoustic fare. His sound has changed but his writing remains meaningful. “Everything I write is autobiographical in nature,” Belle tells Living Light News. Musically, Black Bear uses multiple synth layers and textures to create a calming, almost ethereal mood. And there’s good reason for that. “I’ve gone through a lot

Comfort & Joy. www.am930thelight.com

relationally since the last album. I got married last year, so that’s a major component in my writing.” He says “Pieces,” the first single off the album, was inspired by his wife. But most importantly, the album is also about his relationship with God and his faith experience in the past couple of years. “The whole record kind of chronicles that whole experience and that’s probably the biggest sort of umbrella that everything else falls under.” While he was raised in a Christian family, it was about two years ago that Belle embarked on a personal relationship with Jesus – and it’s changed his life and his music for the better. Belle says as he immersed deeper into his faith, he felt Jesus’ relentless love pursuing him, just like a black bear – hence the name of his album. His personal encounter with Jesus pervades many of the 10 songs on Black Bear. Asked if the metaphorical bear caught him, he replies with a chuckle. “He got me, man. He got me,” Belle, who lists himself as a “Christ follower” on Twitter, tells the San Francisco Examiner. “But, looking back, I was putting way too much stock in myself – everything was about me and my own personal glory. So thankfully, I’ve been given the chance to continue to do music, with that learning experience behind me. Because it’s not about me and how many albums I sell.”

In his latest release, Andrew Belle talks about life, relationships, and being the object of a relentless pursuit.

Living Light News - November/December 2013 SWITCHFOOT Fading West EP switchfoot.com Review by Josh McConnell

JukeBox

In January, San Diego rockers Switchfoot will release a documentary about the band. The documentary’s soundtrack, which happens to be Switchfoot’s latest record, will be released simultaneously. To tide us over until then, the band has released a three-song EP. Titled the Fading West EP, the disc lives up as a teaser. Over before you know it, the new material makes the listener eager for more. The song “Love Alone Is Worth The Fight,” is an anthemic opening with a military-esque drumline and toe-tapping chorus. “Who We Are” is a little bit funky and features a children’s chorus singing in the background. Finally, “BA55” is a little darker in sound, with lots of experimentation and some funky extended bass lines. All three tracks are unique, yet still sound cohesive. The title track is included as a B-track on physical copies of the EP, and a download code is included to purchase the full version when it comes out. The Fading West EP is refreshing and a must-own. The release builds anticipation for the full-length album in January. For now, pick up the EP and listen to it on repeat. THE CITY HARMONIC Heart thecityharmonic.com Review by Matt Conner Shelves are already stocked with worship albums filled with larger-than-life anthems, so it’s a testament to the tremendous talent of The City Harmonic to see them stand out from among the crowd. The quartet has largely relied on Euro-rock elements and constructs to great effect. The band’s newest release, Heart, is no different, yet it’s clear their experience in and out of the studio has provided them a greater depth to pull from. The songs connect in meaningful, mature ways. Lead single “A City On A Hill” places various aspects from the Bible’s Sermon on the Mount in a modern, urban context in the lyrics and accompanying video. It’s a mid-tempo number that calls the church to be what Jesus said it could be. “Strong” is a tender ballad that relies on the strength of God’s love; it’s a stirring statement given the joys and hardships of a band that has witnessed the birth of a child in one family and the devastation of cancer in another. Yet The City Harmonic is at their best when reaching for the stars. As the strings swell on “Here And There” or the band finds its stride with “Glory,” they serve as signs that one of the most promising worship bands has fulfilled its potential. And as Heart closes with the atmospheric piano arrangement surrounding “My Jesus, I Love Thee” it leaves the listener wanting more. LOVE & THE OUTCOME Love & The Outcome loveandtheoutcome.com Review by Matt Conner

The duo’s self-titled debut is a concoction of anthems and ballads alike about hope, love and the joyous adventure of following God. “When We Love” jumpstarts the festive album with a memorable synth-driven refrain and speaks to the beauty and importance of giving ourselves to others. The slight dance hall feel should make the track a live favourite. “He Is With Us” is a simple, heartfelt pop song reminding listeners that God is trustworthy: “It might seem there’s an ocean in between / But He’s holding on to you and me / And He’s never gonna leave.” “City Of God” takes concepts from other songs and binds them with a communal importance. While their debut is filled with plenty of sing-along anthems, it’s the tender moments that show off what this duo does best. “Closer To You” and “What A Promise” offer beautiful moments of worship. Few debuts are this radio-ready, well-rounded and accessible. Love & The Outcome might have abandoned everything in faith to follow their dream, but they should soon see a day when the rewards are tangible through a great number of fans who love their music. ROYAL TAILOR Royal Tailor royaltailoronline.com Review by Lindsay Williams For fans of Maroon 5 and Justin Timberlake looking for a Christian alternative, Royal Tailor is your answer. While the group’s GRAMMY-nominated debut, Black & White, built a strong foundation introducing their unique blend of pop, rock, R&B and hip-hop, their self-titled sophomore effort further cements their status as an emerging act with serious potential. Royal Tailor is one of the most relevant recordings of late, easily keeping pace with the band’s mainstream counterparts. Between lead vocalist Tauren Wells’ perfect high tenor and the seamless addition of rap sprinkled throughout specific tracks, Royal Tailor sets itself apart from similar pop outfits. Two cameos also up the cool factor with TobyMac featured on “Jesus Love,” and Capital Kings spotlighted on the rapid-fire “Ready Set Go.” The lyrics remain at surface level for the most part, but the topics ring true. “You Are My Rescue,” however, contradicts the fact that Royal Tailor is simply another bubblegum pop act with artful lyrics like: “The sound of silence is all that I can hear / The questions echo between my heart and my tears… No shaking of earth / Just trembling hands / No oceans that part / Just You holding my heart.” Christian music needs more pop groups willing to create music on the edge, and Royal Tailor’s new disc proves this is a band willing to take musical risks without compromising a faith-fueled message. SARA GROVES The Collection saragroves.com Review by Lindsay Williams For the past 15 years Sara Groves has been telling exquisite stories through song. Her immense discography includes 10 albums filled with snapshots of real life. It’s Groves’ raw, transparent musings that are highlighted on The Collection, a “best of” two-disc set with an impressive 27 tracks. The Collection takes listeners back to some of Groves’ most thought-provoking work. Thankfully, the album highlights Groves as the incredible songwriter that she is, curating some of her best lyrics

Three years have passed since Canadian husband/wife duo Chris Rademaker and Jodi King sold their possessions to make music as Love & The Outcome. Chasing dreams has never sounded so good.

instead of simply culling all of the singles shipped to radio. Groves isn’t afraid to write about the grittiness of life, each song a candid snapshot of grace-soaked moments. The album also beautifully captures her compassionate spirit. Her advocacy work, especially in the areas of Rwanda’s genocide and human trafficking, are evident in heady, often hard-to-swallow songs like “Eyes On The Prize” and “Why It Matters.” Her music stands as a reminder of the things that are beautiful and true. Four new cuts (“Strangely Ready,” “Blessed Be The Tie,” “Lay It Down” and “Kindness Of Strangers”) weave together with the others seamlessly, despite the 15-year gap between some of the songs. The Collection gives longtime fans a chance to fall in love with Groves’ music all over again and new listeners the opportunity to experience one of Christian music’s greatest gifts. THE NEVERCLAIM The Neverclaim theneverclaim.com Review by Josh McConnell The Neverclaim is a six-man Oregon band whose purpose is not to claim God’s glory as their own. After releasing three indie albums and winning a contest that allowed The Neverclaim to open for various Christian artists, Third Day’s Mac Powell introduced the band to his label, Essential Records. This led to the band launching 10 songs from their self-titled debut album released last month. While their music sounds fairly similar to existing worship bands, The Neverclaim’s combination of stirring lyrics, powerful percussions, and driving guitars still sounds fresh and enjoyable. A mix of indie, pop and rock influences makes The Neverclaim sound like a worship version of Daughtry. Lead singer Jeremiah Carlson even has an uncanny vocal resemblance to Needtobreathe’s Bear Rinehart. But this is where the similarities end. The Neverclaim’s debut effort is filled with honest songs that reflect the heart of the band – whether it’s “Revival’s” rousing anthem to carry the banner of Jesus into the world, to the moving “Steal Their Hearts,” a parent’s vulnerable prayer for his children. Worship leaders and fans alike who want an edge to their music should give The Neverclaim a try. CHRIS SLIGH This Is Life chrissligh.com Review by Josh McConnell Chris Sligh first came on the scene on American Idol six years ago. Finishing in the Top 10, Sligh joined the American Idol tour throughout North America in 2007. The Tennessee native’s songwriting talent and incredible voice landed him a contract with a Christian label shortly after. His song “Empty Me” earned him a spot on the Billboard chart. He co-wrote a song for popular country stars Rascal Flatts, toured for two years and then took time off to re-focus. Now Sligh has returned to music with a large collection of songs he wrote, recorded and produced independently. Titled This Is Life, the album is a whopping three-disc set with 37 tracks. While Sligh will continue to make music, this will be his final album. Grouped by theme, Disc 1 is called “This Is Worship,” Disc 2 “This Is Love” and Disc 3 is “This Is Everything.” This Is Life features some fun singer/songwriter-meets-pop tunes. In true Sligh fashion, he writes songs that reflect raw and honest emotions. The album is solid value at only $15 and directly supports the artist. Check out This Is Life to see if it’s for you.

SI-COLOGY 1

HE WINS, SHE WINS

Ordinary days often contain extraordinary moments. Carolyn Weber brings this to life on the pages of her book, Holy Is The Day. From the first chapter where she describes her neardeath experience of giving birth to twins, she draws readers in with her masterful writing. Weber shares her journey as she balances the role of wife, mom to three young children, and university professor – and how she learned to rest and reflect, and to capture hope and humour in every situation. A brilliant writer whose pen is often poetic, Weber delivers her story with clever puns. In one chapter, she discusses a mode of transportation and likens herself as being “flat tired.” Weber’s style is never impersonal. Just like her account of a day at the beach when her son accidentally kicks sand into the salad, her stories are honest and relatable. She also shares her unique challenges, which includes her decision to write about her Christian faith in her first book. Many of her colleagues warned her that this could be academic suicide for a professor seeking tenure. Despite the swirling emotions, she decided to go ahead and write from the heart. This book is a beautiful blend of everyday musings and discovering the joy of living in the moment, enjoying the gift of today.

Who doesn’t love Si, the wacky uncle from Duck Dynasty’s famous bearded clan? Any Duck Dynasty fan has enjoyed the amusing and outlandish tales of Phil’s younger brother – whether they’re from military days in Vietnam or the duck hunt. And with the release of Si-cology 1: Tales & Wisdom From Duck Dynasty’s Favorite Uncle, there’s plenty more not seen on the show. Penned with humour and witty one-liners distinctly Si, this book offers readers a rare glimpse into his life: growing up with Phil and their childhood antics, how he made a deer cough (and why he quit smoking), getting random marriage proposals, and where his beloved blue Tupperware cup came from. And while Si doesn’t seem to have a care in the world, his autobiography reveals the difficulties he and his family have triumphed over: surviving the war, kicking a drinking problem, he and his wife’s struggle to get pregnant, and raising a child with Asperger’s. It’s a different side of life that shows his character, values, and tenacious faith in trying times. Co-written with Mark Schlabach, Si Robertson’s autobiography is a New York Times’ bestseller – not bad for an odd duck. If you’re a Duck Dynasty fan, this book is a mustread. As Si would say, “That’s a fact, Jack!”

Willard Harley Jr. brings many years of credibility as an acclaimed clinical psychologist and awardwinning author of bestsellers. One of the most popular is His Needs, Her Needs. Following in a similar vein, He Wins, She Wins, features Harley’s expertise as a psychologist and counsellor to take couples a step further toward help, healing and healthy marital relationships. Conflict in marriage is nothing new, but finding good and Godly methods for resolving it is crucial. Dr. Harley helps couples to navigate through conflict by showing them how to negotiate well. In Part One of this book, he defines The Art of Marital Negotiation. Part 2 explains how Resolving Common Marital Conflicts With Negotiation can transpire. And finally, in Part 3 he wisely shows couples many of the Common Problems with Married Conflict Resolution. There are also three excellent appendices at the back of the book to help couples complete Marital Negotiation Worksheets, an Emotional Needs Questionnaire, and a Love Busters Questionnaire. These are bonus tools couples can really benefit from. Every couple, newly married or not so newly married, should have a copy of this great marriage resource.

PARENTING YOUR POWERFUL CHILD

by Willard Harley Jr.

by Dr. Kevin Leman

Does your child argue with everything you say? Do you battle over procrastination, curfew, and chores? Do you secretly understand why animal mothers eat their young? If you’ve said yes to any of the above, then you might have a powerful child. As Dr. Leman describes him, “He’s the child who is orchestrating your entire household by his antics – or the fear of his antics.” Dr. Leman, a psychologist and New York Times best-selling author, wrote this book to help parents understand their powerful children and redirect those power surges toward something positive. Instead of combatting a child’s efforts, Dr. Leman recommends winning their cooperation. He explains three types of powerful children and the ways they try to control the household: the loud, curveball manipulator; the quiet, sensitive manipulator; and the stubborn, procrastinating manipulator. Dr. Leman’s insight will help parents of powerful children to disengage from the power struggle. After all, the goal in parenting is not to overpower but to inspire the best person in your child. Dr. Leman says, “Your powerful child needs to know that you think she’s special, that she’s an important part of your family, that you believe in her and her talents, and that you’re convinced she’s put on this earth for a purpose – to make a contribution to the world that only she can make.” Reviewed by Lynetta Smith
