im Meeder’s childhood was far from beautiful. But her experiences led to a life unimaginable. In her book Fierce Beauty, coming out Oct. 4, the 50-year-old shares how tragedy helped her discover genuine beauty and how readers can embrace what matters most in life. When she was nine-years-old, a family friend picked up Meeder and her two older sisters from school and took them to their grandparent’s house. “During the drive no one spoke and … I had a crushing feeling something horrific had happened,” Meeder, whose parents were entangled in a bitter divorce, says. At the house, a relative embraced the fourth grader and said, “‘I’m so sorry. Your Dad’s just murdered your mother, and he killed himself.’ ” The words shattered her world.

“I broke out of her arms, ran out the back door, and just ran and ran,” the Redding, Oregon native explains. While running through an orchard, she fell down and just started screaming. “I remember screaming ‘Jesus, help me! Jesus, help me! I need You now.’ And I didn’t even know who Jesus was … when our lives are being crushed we know where to turn. “And what I know as an adult is the Lord of all creation came and knelt in the dirt beside a breaking child and took the hand that was reaching out to Him and never let go,” the author says. continued on page 2

he first four trips weren’t enough for MLB outfielder Josh Hamilton. Neither were the next four. Not even eight trips to rehab could persuade the addicted athlete to leave drugs and alcohol behind. It took a middle-of-thenight encounter with his grandmother on Oct. 5, 2005 to show the Raleigh, N.C. native how far he had fallen. “She told me she couldn’t take it anymore, that I was hurting the people I love,” Hamilton told ESPN. “My grandmother seeing me like that – that was the turning point.” It was a turning point no one would have predicted six years earlier. As a high-schooler, the left-handed

left-fielder dominated the prep scene, batting .636 and .529 in grades 11 and 12, while twice earning the North Carolina Gatorade High School Player of the Year Award. USA Baseball named Hamilton their Amateur Player of the Year and Baseball America handed him their prep Player of the Year honour. Life wasn’t just good at the plate. Hamilton’s parents gave him an “all-American” upbringing, eventually quitting their jobs to attend his major league games. So when the Tampa Bay Devil Rays chose the big stick as first overall draft pick on June 2, 1999, complete with a $4 million signing bonus, it was icing on the cake. Hamilton spent his rookie seasons playing for east

coast minor league teams. At 6-4 and 240 pounds, he performed well enough that the big leagues seemed imminent. Then, in 2001, Hamilton was in a car accident, requiring a break from baseball. With no games to follow, his parents settled back in Raleigh. Hamilton was now without his parents and sport, leaving him with plenty of spare time. Hamilton spent much of it at a tattoo parlor with friends. Several of them drank and did drugs. Soon, TM inquisitiveness took over. “I had my first drink of alcohol and did my first line of cocaine in the same night,” Hamilton told The 700 Club. “I can’t say why I did it other than just curious about both of them.” continued on page 2

Together they cleaned up the land, started rescuing horses, and opened to the public in 1995. “This broken property with all these broken horses … became the perfect place to heal the hearts of broken kids,” Kim, who now helps others develop similar ranches, says. “In their effort to make the horses better, the kids themselves started getting better,” she explains. Since opening, the ranch has rescued more than 300 horses, receives 5,000 visitors per year, and is free to every child who comes. In 2004, the Ranch won the national Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis Award for public service. “Just like people, each horse has its own unique beauty … horses that choose to survive terrible things and push into a life filled with love, purpose, and joy truly are beautiful,” Meeder says. On the ranch, she sees people who have survived horrific things, struggling with despair and believing lies. One of the biggest lies is “the idea that how you look is far more important than who you are,” she says, thinking specifically of women. “Women are more flawless than ever on the outside, yet on the inside, these same women are being crushed by feeling worthless, useless, hopeless, and alone,” she explains, which is why she decided to write Fierce Beauty. Through personal stories Meeder challenges readers to choose a life of lasting purpose and to realize “True beauty is not about how you look but how you live.” She states, “There is only One who can heal what is broken within our hearts — Jesus. What He offers cannot be purchased, worn, or applied. It is a gift and it can only be received by a heart that acknowledges its need for Him … the love of Jesus Christ pouring through us is the single greatest beauty we will ever reflect.”

drink and get high on crack-cocaine. Over the next three years, he checked in and out of rehab eight times. “I made a series of bad decisions,” said Hamilton, now 30. “I had a value system and knew right from wrong, but I made wrong decisions.” In 2002, in between rehab stints, Hamilton started dating Katie Chadwick. Their relationship gave him reason to stay clean, and when they married in November 2004 he had been sober for five months. The next January Hamilton returned to his addiction, leaving his newly-pregnant wife to “fend for herself basically.” Katie Hamilton felt total despair at the looming demise of her marriage. She turned to the only failsafe relationship she knew. “I was completely desperate for God,” Katie told The 700 Club. “… I would be in my car praying for [Josh], and it was like I could feel God right there with me just bringing me so much peace and joy in the midst of a complete disaster.” Besides his

Josh Hamilton

wife, Hamilton lost his other love: baseball. After a series of failed drug tests he was benched indefinitely. From 2004 to 2006, Hamilton forfeited three seasons of minor league play, never getting further than Class A ball. One autumn night Hamilton went to his grandmother’s. Ravaged by drugs, his once-fit body now weighed a gaunt 180 pounds. And that’s when Grandma Mary let him have it. “My grandmother didn’t give me tough love — she gave me true love,” Hamilton told BP Sports. Two days later, Hamilton picked up a Bible and began reading. “I prayed after that and I said, ‘God, here I am. My way hasn’t worked. Everything I’ve done has gotten me to this point. Without You in my life, without You leading my life, I can’t do it,’ ” he recalled. “That’s when I said, ‘Here You go.’ ” And that’s when the miraculous transformation began. Hamilton broke free from his addictions and reconciled with Katie. In spring training 2007, the Cincinnati Reds added him to their roster after the league reinstated him – a rare second chance for an unproven newbie. Hamilton’s swing should have been rusty. Instead he shocked everyone by batting .403 in spring training. He followed with a solid rookie year for the Reds, who then traded him to the Texas Rangers. His 2008 season proved a hit. Hamilton was named to the American League All Star team, a feat he has repeated every season since. He also electrified the 2008 Home Run Derby crowd, smashing a record 28 home runs in the opening round and finishing with 35 home runs – the second-most in derby

history. Hamilton also snagged the 2010 AL batting title and AL and ALCS MVP honours. That batting prowess helped the Rangers make their first-ever World Series appearance in 2010. Though they lost to the San Francisco Giants, they’re quickly gaining momentum for a second appearance; Texas currently sits in first place in the AL West. With the acquisition of relievers Koji Uehara and Mike Adams to support Neftali Feliz, Texas’ pitching staff looks solid. Despite spending nearly six weeks on the disabled list early in the season with a hairline fracture in his upper arm, Hamilton is batting .302 and has a .348 on-base percentage. “It’s amazing over the past few years what God’s done in my life, and how quickly He’s done it,” Hamilton told ESPN. “Alone, I couldn’t win this battle. With Jesus, I couldn’t lose. I couldn’t fill the void in my life with money and fame. When it came to stopping drugs I couldn’t do it. When Jesus came in the picture, it was a total reversal of everything – the material worldly things didn’t matter anymore. Surrendering my soul to Him was beyond belief,” he told Sports Spectrum. Notwithstanding his impressive return, baseball isn’t Hamilton’s top priority – his relationships with Jesus Christ, Katie, and their three daughters take that honour. “It’s amazing to me, how blessed I’ve been, to be able to come back and do well here at this level of baseball,” he told the National Post. “But it’s not all about baseball now. God comes first, then family and recovery, and baseball is down there on the list.”

Newsbriefs All-time bestseller about to become a TV reality NEW YORK, NY — Many wondered how Mark Burnett would top the success of his reality shows Survivor, The Apprentice, and Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader? Apparently the famous TV producer is looking back as he moves forward. For the past two years, Burnett and his actress wife, Roma Downey (Touched By An Angel), have been creating a 10-part docudrama entitled The Bible for the History channel. Since rewatching the classic Cecil B. deMille version of The Ten Commandments, the 50-year-old Burnett told the New York Times he realized producing such an endeavour as The Bible is now “within the parameters of television.” The visual storyteller told The Associated Press it’s humbling to “breathe fresh life into incredible stories for a global audience.” The series will combine live

action with computer-generated imagery and consist of five two-hour parts. The episodes will contain well-known and less familiar Biblical accounts. Nancy Dubuc, president of the History channel, said the program is set to air in 2013. The Bible is one of the largest projects the channel has ever undertaken and will be scripted and acted with some filming occurring in the Middle East. Burnett and Downey both grew up reading the Bible. Burnett told The Associated Press, “Our job is to tell the stories in an emotionally connected way.” The program will be based on the New International and New Revised Standard versions of the Bible. Dubuc emphasized how significant the Bible is, adding, “This is the most discussed, debated book in the history of mankind.”

Cell phone seller sets the tone for selflessness NEW YORK, NY — Instead of demanding something for the coveted ball that marked Derek Jeter’s 3,000th career hit, Christian Lopez gave it to the Yankee star with no strings attached. The ball was estimated to have a cash value of $100,000 to $250,000. Lopez’s willingness to return it for nothing shocked and surprised everyone. The 23-year-old cell phone salesman told reporters the ball and moment belonged to the New York Yankee Captain. “He deserves this, he’s worked hard for this ... I’m not the type of person to take this away from him,” the recent college grad said. Jeter’s 3,000th hit made him

the first Yankee and only the 28th player in MLB history to reach such a milestone. Appreciative of Lopez returning the ball, the Yankees gave him four tickets in a suite for every remaining game at Yankee Stadium, an assortment of signed baseballs, bats, and jerseys, as well as a chance to meet Jeter. Though numerous fans questioned how Lopez could so easily give the ball back, many commended him for his selfless action. An article on Yahoo! Sports stated “… the integrity Lopez showed in returning the ball to Jeter is going to benefit him in his life and future career.”

SAN ANTONIO,TX — Austin Gutwein and Natasha Leininger think the best time to make a difference is now. In 2004, after watching a video about Africa, then nine-year-old Gutwein wanted to help African kids, so his parents got him in touch with the Christian organization World Vision. With the help of the charity the student from Arizona decided to play basketball for Africa and shoot 2,057 free throws to represent the average number of African children per day who become orphans because of AIDS. Taking on the name Hoops of Hope, Gutwein’s efforts raised $3,000. Since then, others have hosted Hoops of Hope events and over $2million has been raised. In 2009, Gutwein along with Todd Hillard wrote a book about Hoops of Hope

entitled Take Your Best Shot. After reading the book this year, Natasha Leininger, a nine-year-old student from Texas, tried to shoot baskets for Africa too. However, when she only made four baskets out of 1,000 free throws, she decided to turn to books. With the help of her family, school, and Cross Mountain Church, Leininger started “From One Child To Another” Read-athon. In July, Leininger presented Les Huffman of Uganda Tree of Life Ministries a cheque for $25,000 ― enough funds to build a school. “I don’t like seeing kids with nowhere to go …,” Leininger told her church. With a vision to raise $60,000 for an orphanage in Uganda, Leininger is planning a nationwide “From One Child to Another” Read-a-thon. So far, 60 schools have signed up. S Silver Sponsor

Desperately empty,” he said in his bestselling book. Despite years of accolades and recognition for his outstanding athletic success, Sander’s greatest accomplishment took place off the field in June 1997. That year the superstar surrendered his life to Jesus Christ and began a life changing relationship with God. “I had a hole in my life that needed filling. In his Hall of Fame speech, Sanders, who is currently working as a NFL Network commentator, boldly expressed his devotion to God, saying, “Jesus, I love you. Message captures hearts of Colombians BOGOTÁ, COLUMBIA — Kidnappers in Colombia are being captured by a message of love. In the 1960s, Marxist ideology and illegal drug trafficking started Colombia’s guerrilla war and increased kidnappings, but thanks to a Christian radio ministry they are now in decline. Colombia Para Cristo’s director Russell Stendal was kidnapped in 1983 and held captive for five months by members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). However, after helping to save the lives of badly injured rebel fighters, Stendal was released. Over the last several years, he and others have been invited into hostile areas to install radio transmitters, including one recently set up on a 13,500 foot mountain. “Little by little we were able to give backpacks with relief goods to all the children of the area … then we began to reach

out to each family, giving them a solar powered radio. Now we’ve been able to install this station in the heart of one of the most hostile areas in this country,” Stendal told CBN News. Voice of the Martyrs also continually provides funds to increase the area of coverage for the radio ministry. Canadianmade radios and Christian books often arrive in the nation by parachute. Alex and Gabriela, civilians living in the country, had their lives transformed through radio messages that shared the love and forgiveness God offers through His Son, Jesus Christ. They both believe God is at work in Colombia. Gabriela told CBN News, “The guerrillas and the guerrilla sympathizers come and pick up radios and Bibles, study the Bible, and listen to the radio.” Stendal adds, “A lot of people coming to the Lord here are former kidnappers.”

out.” Before joining the army, the Sergeant attended church and had accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour, but near death “transformed him … you never heard a negative word out of James’ mouth,” Mescall said. The end of Hackemer’s life came in a way no one expected. In July, while riding a roller coaster at Darien Lake Theme Park & Resort, the double amputee was ejected from the ride and fell to his death. Though the tragedy has saddened those who knew Sgt. Hackemer, they are confident he is truly in a better place. Because of Hackemer’s decision to put his faith in God’s Son, Jesus Christ, the solider knew he would go to Heaven. After he lost his legs, he expressed his faith in God to WIBV’s George Richert, saying, “I want you to know God was there for me and has had His hand on me since the beginning.”

GOWANDA, NY — A close encounter with death helped Sgt. James Hackemer appreciate life. In 2008, the 29-year-old was horrifically injured in Iraq by an explosive device. He lost both legs and a massive amount of blood. After needing to be revived twice by army medics, Hackemer said he saw visions of Heaven and hell. Following two strokes, an eight-week coma, and three years in hospital, the Sergeant miraculously survived and realized he had been given a second chance. Friend and neighbour Marty Mescall told the National Post that Hackemer went to Afghanistan just another “cocky, G.I. Why Did London Burn? by Charles Colson

The rioters looted and burned because they chose to do so. All human beings are made in the image of God — free to choose good or evil. Given man’s fallen nature, our proclivity is to choose evil. Christians call the choosing of evil “sin.” This proclivity to sin must be restrained through moral training and the formation of a healthy conscience. And the process has to begin at a young age — with an individual’s character shaped, honed, and encouraged by loving instructors, usually the family, the faith community, and, well, once-upon-a-time, by schools. As the conscience is trained and strengthened, the individual has a fighting chance to reject sin and choose to do good more often than not. And then, again, as Christians know, the battle of conscience rages in every human heart. Read Roman 6 and 7 in the Bible. It’s an unfair fight, one we only win with divine aid — and the support of others who will hold us accountable to do the right thing. This is a message I’ve preached for years, and I will not stop. It’s a message that rings throughout our new DVD series on ethics called Doing the Right Thing. Go to dointherightthing.com to find out how you can get a copy. I know we are swimming against the post-modern cultural tide. We’ve taught our kids that good and evil are in the eye of the beholder; that the key to happiness is selffulfillment, not virtue. And then we wonder why London burns or flash mobs rage in Philadelphia. But folks, we have a choice. We see people for who they are — prone to make the wrong moral choices — and commit to train and inspire them to make good moral choices, or this is our choice, we can bar the windows and start hiring more riot police. The London riots are over — for now. The perpetrators are facing justice. Some British courts are open roundthe-clock to handle the case load. And judges are in no mood for leniency. Now the Brits are struggling for answers. Why? Why did these mostly young rioters go nuts? And lest you think that’s their problem, not ours, you might ask the same question s Charles Colson about why flash mobs of teenagers have ransacked stores in Philadelphia and terrorized and beaten visitors to the Wisconsin State Fair. A recent New York Times article examined the standard, pat answers: the police lost control; mob mentality gripped the rioters; kids were unemployed and had no hope; government cutbacks angered them; social media fanned the flames, on and on. At least the writer, Ravi Somaia, had the good sense to point out that none of these answers add up. And they certainly don’t explain why folks like college graduates and aspiring athletes joined in the mayhem. Quoting a British psychologist, the Times article ends with a shrug of the shoulders: “We may never know” why the riots happened. Well as the conventional wisdom always had it, as the Boston Globe in an OPED put it last week, it’s the result of economic depravation. Or some people say politics, or poverty, or psychology, or racism, or any -ism. Well folks, it lies in the human heart. This is basic Worldview 101. And our super tolerant society today can’t figure this out. And though attacked viciously by the left, Prime Minister Cameron got it right, it’s a moral problem. The rioters looted and burned because they chose to do so. They made a moral choice, a very bad one.

My Favourite Teacher Of All by Phil Callaway Not long ago a family asked me to give a brief tribute at the funeral of their father, my 10th grade English instructor. For the most part, teachers did not want me speaking in their classrooms, let alone their funerals, so this was a great privilege. Here were my words on that day. Mr. Al Bienert showed me it’s possible to stay a kid all your life. If ever I grow up I want to be like him. He taught me English at Prairie High School back in a previous century. Mr. Bienert took me and my friends to hockey games, becoming the only teacher who desired to spend time with me outside the classroom, thus qualifying him as my most favourite teacher of them all. It’s easy to find things wrong in a kid; Mr. Bienert found something good. “You have a gift in communication,” he said, and I credit him today that I make a living doing something most teachers begged me to stop: helping others laugh. His classroom was populated by troublesome kids and there were times I thought he

We left for the golf course around lunch so we could get in a round before 2:15. We lost a lot of balls when Mr. Bienert played, sometimes causing him to leave the course early, which helped his score. But more often we would stay in the clubhouse after the game and treat an ailment he had. Yes, the poor man was fighting TB and the only thing that seemed to help was lemon meringue pie. And it gave me hope. Hope that despite my wanderings, there was a God who loved me unreasonably, that there was a place for me in His Kingdom. I learned a little about English from Mr. Bienert, but I learned much more about life. I learned the first three letters of the word diet spell die, so go ahead and have pie with your ice cream. I will have silver in my hair, gold in my teeth, lead in my feet, and lots of natural gas, but I won’t be wealthy without friends. I’m thankful that Al Bienert was my teacher. And though he was a great guy, I’m thankful God didn’t accept him into Heaven this past week based on his own goodness, but on God’s amazing grace. Finding Fatherly Love

he letter came as a shock. Roberta stared at it, her heart beating fast. She knew the short message could turn her life upside down. Roberta had grown up knowing nothing about her father other than the bitter comments her mother made any time she asked about him. Over the years she became convinced she was better off not knowing him. She believed he had abandoned her so she tried to block him from her heart and mind. Over the years that pain had caused a lot of misery in her life. She scanned the letter again, trying to read between the lines. The words were a plea. Her father wanted to meet her. He wanted to know her. Roberta could almost feel the pain in those few short words, yet anger and resentment cut

at her heart. “What right does he have to make demands now? Why didn’t he want to know me when I was a child? Why wasn’t he there to love, protect, and provide for me like a father should?” Roberta threw the letter in the garbage can, only to retrieve it a few minutes later. She paced the room until her husband arrived home. It was a relief to pour out her feelings, but she did not anticipate her husband’s response. He gently asked, “Are you sure he really wanted to keep his distance all these years?” The question jarred her as

Eventually her father stood at the door of her house. she realized there could be more to the story than she knew. Several days later Roberta wrote her own brief note. Eventually her father stood at the door of her house. Roberta invited him in and he told her his side of the story. Roberta noticed he said nothing disparaging about her mother. All she heard and felt from him was a deep sadness

Filtered Clean as he explained that he had tried to contact her and her mother many times, had sent money for her education, had made hundreds of offers of help over the years. All had been rebuffed. “I’ve tried so hard to be part of your life,” he said. “I’m so glad you allowed me to step through that door at last.” Over the next weeks and months, Roberta got to know her father. She found he was a gentle, caring man, genuine in his affections, and sincere in his motives. It was then she realized what her wrong concept of her father had done. It had robbed her of the relationship she longed for and caused her years of misery. Like Roberta, all of us long for our father’s love. We long even more deeply for a relationship with our Heavenly Father. Some of us believe He has abandoned us. Like Roberta, we have been believing a lie. In the Bible, Jesus says, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him and he with me” (Revelation 3:20). Isn’t it time you opened the door? y husband thinks a clean furnace filter is the cure for any malady. If we hear as much as a sneeze in our house, he disappears into the basement and doesn’t come up until there’s a new filter protecting his family. He beat himself up for weeks when our kids had Chicken Pox. He was just sure that the pox situation would never have happened if he had stayed on top of the filter state. I love the changing of the filter/guard ceremony. I’m telling you, Richie can deliver one compelling “State of the Filter” address. Of course, maybe that’s because he gets to write a new one every 30 days or so. One day one of the kids came in with skinned knees. I teased Richie: “Your son is bleeding. Haven’t you changed the furnace filter?”

When I was a kid, the cureall was VapoRub. If you couldn’t slime away your ailment, it probably wasn’t curable. I was greased down so many times growing up I thought my parents had me confused with their ’68 Chevy. I’m almost sure they thought that with a Vapo-lube I’d be good as new. At least they never tried to change my oil. Still, I can’t imagine why, but there’s something awfully comforting about sliding into bed (and I do mean sliding) with slime oozing out of your jammies. I don’t know how I could’ve felt more protected from the symptoms of the ailment-du-jour. God’s Word protects our families that way, spiritually.

“Your son is bleeding. Haven’t you changed the furnace filter?” My husband is even more conscientious about protecting our family with the filter of God’s Word than he is about changing the furnace filter. Psalm 119:9-11 in the Bible says, “How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your Word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your Word in my heart that I

might not sin against you.” God’s Word, the Bible, acts as our sin filter. It helps keep our way pure. What’s more, we can hide it away in our hearts and let it work to make purity a more natural way of life. Soothing vapours working their way into our hearts? Not exactly. But memorizing God’s Word and meditating on it can make living for Jesus Christ about as natural as breathing. We can’t see His Word working on our hearts any more than we can see menthol/eucalyptus vapours. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not working. Scripture is good for whatever ails us. The Psalmist continues later in chapter 119: “Your commandments are what I depend on. Oh, I’ll guard with my life what you’ve revealed to me, guard it now, guard it ever ... I cherish your commandments oh, how I love them! — relishing every fragment of your counsel.” If you find yourself leaning toward sin, head for God’s Word. You can depend on it. If it’s athlete’s foot or ringaround-the-collar, better check your furnace filter. Rhonda Rhea is a radio personality and a conference speaker across North America. Freedom In Forgiveness by Dr. Charles F. Stanley

I

s there any sin too big for forgiveness? The Bible tells us that if we seek God’s forgiveness through confession of our wrong doing, then “He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (l John 1:9). God is greater than any sin, and His love for s Dr. Charles F. Stanley us is unconditional and eternal. Our salvation is totally through the substitutionary death of Jesus Christ on our behalf. Sadly, many people fail to realize this and go through life feeling unforgiven. Even though forgiveness has been bestowed, they struggle with guilt and a sense of inadequacy because of something that happened years ago. God’s ultimate desire for us is that we would experience the freedom which comes from accepting His pardon and grace. If your thoughts are troubled by memories of past sin, then you know how difficult it is to enjoy life to the fullest. Much of the depression that plagues our society comes from the crushing weight of guilt. But once you confess your sin to God, He forgives you and restores your fellowship with Him. To continue feeling unforgiven is self-defeating. God has wiped away your sin; He remembers it no more (Isaiah 43:25). If you have confessed to God and repented, you are the only one who can resurrect the memory of that sin. One of the best ways I have found to put an end to such troublesome thoughts is to write out a confession to God — sign it and date it. Then go through the following Scriptures concerning His forgiveness: Psalm 86:5, Psalm 103:2-4, Micah

7:18, Daniel 9:9, 1 John 1:9, and Hebrews 8:12. Write out each verse alongside your confession. Once you have completed the project, read over what you have written, and consider what God has to say about you and your sin. Then across the page in big, bold letters write, “Forgiven by God because of His Son’s love and death at Calvary.” Any time thoughts from your past arise, take out your paper and pray, “Based on the death of Christ for my sins, I stand forgiven for eternity before God. I refuse to accept Satan’s lies. I refuse any attempt to cause me to doubt what Christ has done for me. His death is sufficient payment for my transgressions — I am accepted and loved by God.” Many people think they have liberty because no one questions their activities or hinders their travel, and yet they are enslaved by all kinds of bondage. Anger, stress, workaholism, bitterness, unforgiveness, depression, anxiety, and fear can imprison anyone.

True freedom has more to do with the state of our souls than the positions we hold in society. While a country can experience liberty won on the battlefield, no nation is free until its people are free. And no person is free unless he or she is free on the inside. Far too many think they must “perform” in order to keep their right standing before God. They assume that to ensure their salvation, they must read the Bible, pray, give, and help others. The truth is, there is only one way for genuine liberation to happen: As John 8:36 says, “If (Jesus Christ) makes you free, you will be free indeed.” Consider Paul’s words from Galatians 5:1: “It was for

freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.” To understand Jesus’ mission of liberating everyone who follows Him, we must know what freedom means. It is commonly defined as “liberty from any type of enslavement” or “the opportunity and privilege to pursue one’s desires and life goals without restraint or coercion from someone else.” In today’s world, people take pride in self-sufficiency and independence. To them, being “free” means having control of their life, and no one can tell them what to do or how to do it. But true freedom has more to do with the state of our souls than the positions we hold in society. The sad truth is, without Christ we as humans are free only to rely on our own efforts to liberate ourselves from internal bondage — and that isn’t freedom at all. There is no way to experience spiritual freedom apart from God. The Bible’s book of Romans opens with Paul identifying himself as “a bond-servant of Christ Jesus.” Therein lies the secret: the only way to be genuinely free is to fully surrender your life to the Son of God — to go wherever He leads and do whatever He desires. He came to set us free from the bondage of sin. You cannot be free apart from the liberty that comes in total surrender to Christ. Once you know Jesus as Saviour and Master of your life, protect the freedom God has given you. Use this liberty to live a godly life through the power of the Holy Spirit living inside you — we are never truly free until the grace, goodness, and mercy of God become a reality in our personal experience. Most kids don’t want to go to school. Yet, a program with a pancake aroma is enticing them to come. It’s called Breakfast Club. The Fusion Youth and Community Society of Canada — “a non-denominational Christian organization that provides activities for families” — runs the Club, which provides a free breakfast for kids. The program runs from September-June at Westmount, Westlawn, and Britannia Junior High School, as well as Jasper Place High School. “Kids at these schools are hungry. Some don’t have supper, they don’t have lunch, and they don’t have breakfast. A lot of these kids don’t know their dads. Their moms are on drugs. Their dad’s in jail, so there’s lots of brokenness and life challenges,” says Fusion and Breakfast Club Coordinator Jocelyn Hansen. Neil Peppler, a volunteer who mentors kids at Breakfast Club each morning, can relate to students. “When I was 19, I was struggling in school. I graduated in June 2000, but I barely squeaked through,” says the grocery warehouse worker, who started volunteering three years ago. “Following graduation I was upgrading my marks trying to get into university and

struggling to find motivation. A dark cloud was over my head all the time … and I was not open with people or willing to step outside of my comfort zone.” However, when a friend almost overdosed on drugs and Peppler, now 29, didn’t know what to do, his family was there to support him and he sensed God’s presence. “I saw God working in the situation,” says Peppler, who accepted Jesus Christ into his life as a child, but learned to trust God as an adult. “In some ways junior high or high school feels like yesterday. I grew up in a stable, loving, family. I can’t imagine what it must be like for some of these kids. For me [Breakfast

how tall the mountain is, it’s not too big for God. God can heal whatever pain is in their life,” he says. Breakfast Club started six years ago at Britannia Junior High. Since then the program has expanded to other schools. The Clubs run once a week from 7-9 a.m. and will start the second week of September. Any student is welcome, and each school has a specific day for the ministry. Four to 10 volunteers at each school serve the 40-70 students who come. “Many of our volunteers are seniors from different churches. They hear about [the Club] and want to come and cook pancakes, eggs, French toast, muffins, and even teach the kids how to cook if they want,” Hansen says. One of the volunteers, Terry Teibe, who attends Gospel Centre Pentecostal Church, has been helping out since 2009 at Westlawn Junior High. “School sometimes for kids is

deadly … [Breakfast Club] provides a safe environment, so when [kids] come in they don’t feel threatened,” says the mother of three and grandmother of five. Twelve-year-old Cassandra Thurston says, “[Breakfast Club] is awesome! If someone tried to tie me to a chair so that I couldn’t come, I would scoot my chair the entire way to come!” Jade Atkinson, also 12, adds, “All the volunteers that come here are pretty nice … they do anything.” The program is proving to be invaluable for students. Hansen says research done at Westlawn Junior High School reveals Breakfast Club days “have the highest attendance, the most amount of homework done, the least amount of people in the principal’s office, and the least amount of bullying in the hallways.” Hansen adds, “on the days Breakfast Club runs, the whole culture of the school is impacted … we know that’s God working.”

came when he began to pray. “I told myself, if this is real, if I call unto Him, He should respond in a real way,” he says. Hradoway wasn’t disappointed. Soon after, he asked Bekecs to be baptized and began volunteering in the youth centre. “Once I came to know Christ, giving back to other people took off even more,” he says. Now 19, he works at YFC part-time and hopes for a fulltime position soon. He splits duties between Minus Negative and Love Works, which provides practical assistance to impoverished countries. In July, Hradoway and Bekecs worked with a group of teens in Burundi, Africa for three weeks. “We’re trying to get kids to make a difference and see outside their own bubble of North American society,” he explains. Hradoway and others continue to impact local teens, like 18-year-old Jennifer Pothier, who prayed with a YFC worker in school when she was suicidal. She made the decision to become a Christian on Good Friday, 2009. Her first experience with Serving the Homeless changed her perspective. “After we got back from the inner city … I laid on the floor and started crying because I felt so selfish … I think that day, I saw God on the street corner,” she says. “Like every Christian, I have ups and downs, but since being involved with Youth For Christ, I am held accountable by people who love me, and I know who to come to when I need prayer … When I grow up, I want to be to youth what the workers at YFC have been to me.”

“People just lo ve accepted me d and for who I was .”

o

It seems teens have a reputation of focusing on themselves, but one organization is helping counter that image. Inner City Serving the Homeless celebrated its 10th anniversary in April. It’s part of Minus Negative, a Youth For Christ (YFC) ministry serving in schools, hosting concerts, and providing opportunities for teens to help those in need. “We had a bunch of huge birthday cakes we shared with the homeless right on the street in celebration; it was a beautiful thing to see God’s faithfulness through all these years,” says James Bekecs, Minus Negative program director. Every Tuesday, students serve food, drinks, blankets, and clothing to the homeless. “It gives teens the chance to make a real difference ... get out of their comfort zones and see the reality the streets can bring,” says Bekecs. Bekecs, now 27, was searching for a concert venue for his youth group in 2006 when he met Bill Rice, a worker with Minus Negative. “After getting to know me, Bill saw my heart for Christ and passion for youth, and asked me to pray about coming on staff with YFC,” Bekecs says. He now works there fulltime. As a child, Bekecs’ mother took him to help in soup kitchens, where he learned about Jesus Christ and began a personal relationship with Him. In high school, he

suffered from depression. After eight months, God gave him a vision. “I saw myself in a dark pit filled with everything I had ever felt during those months. I looked up and saw Jesus standing there. He didn’t say anything, but He bent down and extended His hand … I instantly grabbed [it] and He lifted me out of the pit.” As a YFC worker, Bekecs met Jason Hradoway, a grade 10 student who grew up in a non-Christian home. Through his relationship with Bekecs, Hradoway became a part of YFC. “People just loved and accepted me for who I was. They never preached to me or [said] ‘you need to believe to hang out with us,’ ” he recalls. At first he didn’t believe in God. In fact, he told Bekecs he planned to read the Bible and the satanic bible to get both sides. “I never ended up getting my hand on a satanic bible,” he says, “but I was open to learning.” His behaviour was that of a troubled teen. “I was doing everything Jesus taught us not to do,” he says. Showing Support For

Single Parents by Elisabeth Handley Nelly Samayoa was a single mother of three and expecting her fourth in November 2010 when she started attending Calvary Community Church. She recalls filling out a card asking for prayer because she knew she was going to need it, but wasn’t expecting a call from Michelle Yarmuch, coordinator of the single parent support group The Kids & I. “The first thing that came to my mind was I wasn’t going to fit in,” says Samayoa, 31. “I’m a bit shy so I thought it was going to be really difficult for me and my kids. What kept me going was the love that I felt the first day. You could tell that it was a pure love, not just some fake love they were showing for the moment.” The Kids & I began in 1995 when the people attending Calvary Community felt God encouraging them to reach out to single parents in a big way. Not just with a Bible study, but a ministry including dinner, transportation, childcare, and practical resources like clothing and budgeting classes – all offered at the cost of $1 per family. At their first meeting they had six families. At their second they had 20. As kids got older, The Kids & I incorporated a youth program.

Now they average 30 parents, bringing between 50 and 75 children. And the cost is still $1 per family. The group meets every other week from September through April. After supper, kids are divided by age for teaching, crafts, and high-energy fun. For parents, Yarmuch says the teaching time is divided between large and small group nights. “During the large group nights, we will offer practical skill teaching – budgeting, parenting, conflict resolution, etc. During the smaller group teaching, we’re going to provide a couple of Bible study sessions, and for the single dads that join us a coffee-chat type session where the dads could be mentored by

Ajou, 42, emigrated from Sudan in 1999. “The Kids & I changed my life. I needed help on how to take care of my boys and I have learned a lot. I don’t shout any more at the kids. I love the supporting, the sharing and caring, and the Bible study. I encourage every single parent to attend.” Yarmuch can certainly be credited with helping create the supportive atmosphere. program would be discontinued because there was no one to lead it. “I felt God speak to me, saying He wanted me to step into this role.” For Yarmuch, the ministry isn’t just about providing a meal and Bible lesson. She gets involved in the lives of the parents attending. “One of the most incredible experiences I had was being in the delivery room with one of our moms,” she recalls. “She gave birth to a beautiful little boy last spring and I held her hand and encouraged her through the whole time. As I held the baby, just minutes after he was born, I knew the experience was God’s gift to me.” Samayoa’s experience with The Kids & I has been much the same. “My experience over all was amazing. I found people that loved me and my kids for who we were not for what we have or didn’t have. I learned to trust more in the Lord and I can tell you I’m thankful to the Lord for the ladies He put on my path.”

Putting Your Plants to

Bed

by Carolyn Tomlin

The kiss of the sun for pardon, The song of the birds for mirth, One is nearer God’s heart in a garden Than anywhere else on earth. ~Dorothy Frances Gurney, “Garden Thoughts” As the days grow shorter, nights grow longer. Temperatures fall, frost lingers. A sudden freeze finishes the bright coloured annuals that bloomed in your garden. Fresh vegetables are only a memory. Soon, snow will cover the ground. Don’t let old man winter catch you unprepared. You can close the growing season by “putting your garden to bed.” Here are some tips for preparing your garden, protecting tender bulbs, and saving seeds for next year’s blooms and food.

MUCH ADO ABOUT MULCH

For safeguarding plants, think “mulch” – loads of mulch. Often called “black gold” by gardeners, this is

especially important for recent plantings. Hopefully, you saved summer grass clippings by piling them up and rotating with a turning fork weekly. If not, run your lawn mower over fallen leaves. Rake and cover plants with approximately 10 inches of mulch. Pine needles are another source. Leaves and grass clippings are nature’s way of using resources God provides. Savings come two ways: they are free, and they save valuable landfill space.

DIVIDE AND CONQUER

Perennials – the mainstay of the garden, need attention before winter. Tidy the edges of borders, cut back plants, and remove old stems and leaves. Now’s a good time to divide and replant overgrown perennials that have finished flowering. Or, an excellent time to share extra plants with friends. As outdoor-flowering chrysanthemums, phlox, and other perennials become dormant, lift root clumps and store in boxes of old soil in a frost-free place. Use these parent plants for new cuttings next spring.

DIG IT UP

What to do with those expensive bulbs that added splashes of colour to your summer garden, such as caladiums, elephant ears, and canna lilies? Instead of purchasing new bulbs or tubers next spring, bring them indoors. These bulbs have grown and are larger than when first planted. Before the ground freezes, cut stalks and carefully dig and lift bulbs. Clean and store in sand, peat, or sphagnum moss in a frost-free, dark place – such as a basement. Check occasionally for signs of mold. Spray with an approved fungicide if needed. If withering, soak bulbs in warm water overnight and return to holding area. Now they’re ready to replant next spring.

SAME PLACE — NEXT YEAR

Remove leftover summer annuals from porch pots and yard. Pull up vegetables, such as vines, stalks, and other plants. Removing roots insures workable soil for next summer’s garden. Run through a shredder for compost. Avoid composting any plants that are diseased or

infested with insects. Instead, place in heavy-duty garbage bags and discard. Clean the area by raking to remove leaves and other debris that may harbour insect eggs or bacteria-causing disease. Now you have a head start for next year’s garden.

A PENNY SAVED

Save flower seeds from any mature pods, such as marigolds, zinnias, or impatiens. If you’ve grown prize-winning vegetables, choose a selection of seeds from these specimens. Dry seeds by spreading seeds on newsprint and organize by varieties. A farmer’s tip: store in glass baby food jars in your refrigerator until time to start seeds indoors for next spring’s garden. Think of the money saved by carrying seeds over from one year to the next. Could you donate what you saved to charity? Count the ways you can save by keeping seeds as you serve others. Whether you’re a serious or amateur gardener, both you and your plants will “sleep” better knowing their roots are protected and you’re a good steward of the earth God provided.

Making

Memorable Moments Look to the past to have fun in the present Celebrate Life

by Kim Perrone Acknowledging family history often brings to mind family trees, timelines, and, of course, wacky relatives. However, any night your family gathers to watch movies, play games, or simply visit becomes history in the making. Why not plan a special evening to celebrate that history? Set a date to try one or more of the following activities for nostalgic family fun.

Show and Tell

Sure, you took umpteen videos and photos of the kids as babies, and perhaps still do. The question is, how often do you view them now? Pop some corn and hold a movie night starring the lot of you. You’ll be surprised how many stories and facts come back to you. Relay those tidbits to the kids! Show images of your wedding and talk about that day. How did you feel? Invite grandparents or cousins over with their favourite video segments and photos. If you have older living relatives, videotape them telling family stories. Have the kids ask questions on camera and suddenly you have an heirloom piece of history for their children to view one day.

• Manual Shift car available • Day, Evening and Saturday hours available • Numerous customers come to us on referral

Plan a celebration of a living relative’s life, or of one who has passed on. Eat their favourite foods, play their preferred music and games. Teach the kids about the relative’s country, province, or neighbourhood of origin. Share photos and/or any items that tell of the person’s life. Talk about why this person is or was so special. If you are celebrating a living relative, invite them to wear a funny hat all night. Write them a song or poem or present them with an award. Who wouldn’t want to be named “Best-Dressed Uncle in Smith History,” or ‘‘Wildest Storyteller of the Jones Dynasty?”

Recipes for Reminiscing

Prepare and enjoy recipes from your family’s culinary history. Whether you whip up greatgreat-great-grandma’s chicken pot pie or Dad’s yummy lasagne, work as a family and eat together. Compile a family recipe book with the kids. It can look homemade with handwritten or printed out pages laid out scrapbook style, or rather professional if you use a cookbook software program or upload pages to an Internet printing service such as Lulu.com. Make a bunch of copies and you have meaningful gifts on hand.

Artistic Ancestry

Frame the evening around art. Scrapbooking is a creative way to document your family’s life together, but plan ahead. Days before history night, collect a pile of photos from doubles, digital files, or those pictures that never made it into albums. Buy a blank scrapbook or fashion your own with a binder and acid-free pages. Gather stickers, photo-safe glue, interesting paper or fabric scraps, rubber stamps, markers, etc. No matter how simple or extravagant your vision is, visit scrapbook.lifetips.com or scrapwow.com for hundreds of tips. Keep in mind that the process matters more than the outcome. Let young children participate without worrying that the book will look like they did it! Another method for turning the pages of time is to edit and design an annual family newsletter. Include everyone in writing articles. Mail it out to family and friends. Save

copies in a binder to refer back to important events year after year. Alternately, develop a family crest. Cut out a big shield from cardboard, split it into sections and draw objects that symbolize your family. As well, design a family flag on anything from paper to canvas.

Moment in Time

Preserve the point in history that your family is experiencing now in a time capsule! Simply ask everyone to think about what’s important to them now. In a container (it could even be a box) place objects that define each person as well as notes, newspaper clippings, photos, future goals, and/or letters to each other. Seal the box and choose an occasion years from now (a college graduation, anniversary, or holiday) to open it together. That action — planning to gather years later — reinforces the family bond and the gratitude we show toward God for blessing us with each other (and our wacky relatives).

With Me! Unified parents promote family peace

by Kim Perrone

Dad demands stellar grades. Mom gives “the poor kid” a break. Mom implores kids to tidy. Dad thinks matching socks are overrated. Rarely do parents agree on all aspects of parenting. However, teamwork can work wonders when raising children.

HISTORICAL HAPPENSTANCE

Differences in parenting style are not a reason to despair. In fact, Alyson Schafer (alyson.ca), one of Canada’s leading parenting experts, believes you should expect parenting differences, rather than presume you and your spouse must be on the same page. It’s important to understand why your spouse has parenting opinions conflicting with your ideals. Childhood experiences (good and bad) formulate our adult opinions and that doesn’t always change because we grow up, get married, and live with someone else. Mom might believe children must chip in with chores because she grew up in a large family, while a father raised with a maid might not see the importance of kids learning to wash dishes. As a couple, analyze whether past experiences should or should not influence your parenting today.

BALANCING ACT

Parenting is about striking a balance. Just as hot and cold make warm, differences in parenting styles can teach kids tolerance and cooperation. Schafer believes in recognizing how one parent’s weakness might be the other parent’s strength. She explains, “If one [parent] is better at getting bedtimes to go smoothly and

another is calmer helping with homework, divide your tasks up to take advantage of those different strengths.”

UNIFIED FRONT

Most experts agree you should discuss parenting issues away from your brood. Otherwise, you can damage your unified front – a necessary tool for effective parenting. Kids are notorious for using parental indecisiveness as a reason to not take their parents seriously. Take time to consciously build your unified front. Read Partnership Parenting by Kyle and Marsha Pruett (Da Capo Press). The authors want you to focus on the “big picture” of how you raise children together. They discuss the importance of “striving to agree on who your children are, what they need and want, and how you’ll go about giving it to them.”

FRONT LINES

your child as they deal with consequences handed out by your spouse. As a couple, make decisions about how to handle key kid issues before they arise. For example, before your kids discover video games, talk about future access. Will you allow them to play on school days or only weekends? What should your son’s curfew be during his teenage years? Such preparation places both parents in a confident position when issues crop up. You want that confidence. (You do know kids smell fear, right?)

SEPARATE LIVES

cooperating to put the best interest of the kids is ideal. Pick up two copies of Co-Parenting Works! Helping Your Children Thrive after Divorce (Zondervan) by Tammy Daughtry. Her goal is for parents to see how their co-parenting strategies today will effect their child’s development down the road. Most importantly, seek God’s help daily in raising your kids. While you and your partner might need to come together on things like goals, discipline, or philosophies, you can bet there is one Father who truly knows best!

If you and your co-parent are separated or divorced,

To sustain a unified front, adopt policies reflecting respect for each other. “Support the actions of the other parent,” says Schafer. For example, if your husband tells the kids to clean their rooms instead of going outdoors and they whine about missing the sunny day, don’t empathize with them. Tell them to talk to their father about it, since he made the request. Schafer believes, “Whoever starts the discipline should finish the discipline.” She offers this scenario: “If mom has applied the logical consequence of taking the child’s plate away because they got down from the table, let mom follow through. Kids don’t need two parents harping on them.” As well, experts advise you not to compensate

Super Snacks to

Have you ever nibbled your way through the day without eating anything healthy? It’s easy to do because snacking on junk food is convenient. Grab a doughnut in the break room, hit the vending machine between meetings or buzz through the drive-thru while running errands. But that convenience has a hefty price tag. Our bodies don’t function properly when we fuel them with garbage. Healthy snacking on the run is doable with a little planning. Choose snacks that are nutritious and easy to pack. Foods that fit in a plastic zipper bag can be tossed into your purse or briefcase – now that’s convenient! The perfect snack is low-to-moderate in calories and full of nutrients. Your body needs vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients to fuel the biochemical reactions that maintain health and vitality. A healthy snack also provides a burst of energy mid-morning or during that mid-afternoon slump. Try these healthy “on-the-go” snacks.

1.Bananas

This nifty fruit comes in its own package – just peel and enjoy. Bananas are high in potassium, a mineral that helps regulate fluid and electrolyte balance, blood pressure, and heartbeat. Bananas are a great source of vitamin B6 and pectin, a soluble fibre.

2.Citrus fruit: orange,tangerine,or grapefruit

Citrus fruits are easy to carry and keep well without refrigeration for a few hours. Well known for their high vitamin C content, citrus fruits also contain substances called limonoids, which may fight cancer. Peel and eat in sections to get the added benefit of fibre and the white pithy stuff, which contains some of the limonoids.

3.Raw veggies

Vegetables are packed with vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals. Plus they’re crunchy, low in calories, and full of fibre, which fills you up. Skip the dressing and enjoy the fresh flavour of the veggies.

4.Apples

No peeling needed, just take a bite. Apples contain flavonoids, powerful antioxidants thought to lower the risk of heart disease.

by Beth Bence Reinke, MS, RD

Studies show apple eaters have lower risk of asthma and lung cancer. Be sure to eat the peel, which contains most of the antioxidants.

5.Popcorn

Munching on this movie theatre favourite (minus the butter) is a great way to increase your fibre intake. Three cups of popped popcorn has 3.5 grams of fibre and counts as one serving of whole grains. A recent study showed that popcorn eaters consume over 20 percent more fibre than non-popcorn eaters.

6.Nuts

Although nuts are high in fat, it’s mostly the good-for-you monounsaturated kind that helps lower blood cholesterol. Nuts are chock full of protein, fibre, vitamins, and minerals. Both almonds and walnuts contain vitamin E, magnesium, and a tiny bit of iron. An antioxidant in walnuts called ellagic acid may even fight cancer.

7.Red or purple grapes

Dark-coloured grapes contain a compound called resveratrol that fights cancer and the effects of aging. Grapes also contain antioxidants, helping protect against heart disease and the damaging effects of environmental pollutants.

8.Whole grain cereals

When choosing a dry cereal, look for whole grain, low sugar, and high fibre. Read the side panel to be sure a whole grain, such as oats or 100 percent whole wheat, is the first ingredient listed. The insoluble fibre found in whole grain cereals promotes regularity and helps prevent colon cancer.

9.Whole grain crackers with peanut butter

Skip the prepackaged ones and make your own. Natural peanut butter is best because it contains no added oils or sugar. Look for whole grain crackers that say “0 grams trans fat” on the nutrition label and have no hydrogenated fats in the ingredients list.

10.Dark chocolate

Candy that’s good for you! A compound in cocoa called flavonols can help lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation, and even help prevent blood clots. Chocolate is high-fat, so limit yourself to one ounce per day of dark chocolate. There are other nutritious snacks that are trickier to pack – like hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, and berries. These foods need refrigeration, so tuck them into an insulated lunch bag with an ice pack. Next time you’re on-thego, bypass the break room, avoid the vending machine, and ditch the drive-thru. For convenience and good nutrition, pack your own snack! Beth Bence Reinke, MS, RD is a registered dietitian and author. To learn about her women’s devotional, ‘Fruit Lovers’ Devotions to Go’, and her children’s books, visit bethbencereinke.com.

The perfect snack is low-to-moderate in calories and full of nutrients.

GOING STRONG

At age 90, this fast food founder is living a life made for the movies

by John Hillman

M

ost people plan to retire and look forward to it. But Chick-fil-A’s founder, S. Truett Cathy has no such plan – despite celebrating his 90th birthday last March. “I’m planning to be here forever,” he recently commented to the Atlanta Constitution. “But I know at sometime point, I’ll probably have to give it up.” Whenever the enterprising restaurateur turns over his company’s reins, Cathy will leave an outstanding entrepreneurial and humanitarian legacy. Since its establishment as a fast-food chain in 1967, Chick-fil-A – home of the original chicken sandwich – has expanded to over 1,500 locations in 39 of the 50 United States plus Washington D.C. The franchise generates annual sales of more than

$3.5 billion, and Forbes Magazine estimates Cathy’s wealth in excess of $1.8 billion. The numbers alone don’t tell the entire story, however. Cathy’s devotion to God, charitable works, and people-centred management style make him unique in the cutthroat corporate world. “There’s really no difference between Biblical principles and business principles,” Cathy says. “The Bible, which is a road map, tells a lot about how to operate a restaurant.” Refusing to open Chick-fil-A franchises on Sunday serves as one of the businessman’s most visible Christian values. Over the past four decades, countless developers have offered Cathy astronomical sums to stray from this policy, but the longtime Southern Baptist refuses to compromise his beliefs. “Whether you go to church or not, everybody enjoys having Sunday off,” he tells Living Light News. “I’ve been doing it for [63] years and don’t

intend to change.” Because of this non-negotiable corporate tenet, Chick-fil-A has remained a privately held company. Despite the lack of public capital, Cathy believes the close-knit ownership group provides his company an advantage in the competitive marketplace. “One thing that helps us attract the cream of the crop of young people (as employees) is that we’re closed on Sunday,” he says. “We’re still a private company so we’re permitted to do a lot of things we couldn’t do if we were a public company.” Rags-to-riches best describes Cathy’s ascent to the world of fast food franchising. Raised in rural southern Georgia during the Great Depression, he spent much of his youth assisting his mother in running a boarding house. The harsh economic conditions turned Cathy’s father bitter. But his mother, Lilla Kimbell Cathy, nurtured and guided her son into manhood and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

“Nearly every moment of every day we have the opportunity to give something to someone else” ...“My mother was unable to go to church on Sunday because she had to prepare the noon meal at the boarding house,” he recalls. “But she saw I had clean clothes and went to Sunday school and church.” Cathy’s Sunday school teacher, Theo Abbey,

filled the void as a male role model for the youngster. Abbey visited him at his home and occasionally invited Cathy on family outings to his lake cabin. These two adult influences directed Cathy toward his decision to become a Christian. “The Lord stirred me early,” he says. “I accepted Christ

as my personal Saviour when I was 12. It was the beginning for me, and I’ve always tried to follow the Lord’s principles.” During his distinguished career in food service, Chick-fil-A’s founder has evidenced his Christian faith with deed and dollar. For over 50 years, he taught a Sunday school class for 13-year-old boys at the First Baptist Church of Jonesboro, Ga. Through his restaurants, Cathy established the Leadership Scholarship Program which grants employees college scholarships. Over the past 38 years, the program has awarded more than $27 million in $1,000 education stipends. “Nearly every moment of every day we have the opportunity to give something to someone else – our time, our love, our resources,” he wrote in his 2002 book, Eat Mor Chikin: Inspire More People. “I have always found more joy in giving when I did not expect anything in return.”

...The WinShape Foundation represents Cathy’s biggest philanthropic endeavour. Created in 1984 with the mission to shape winners, the foundation operates 14 foster homes in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and Brazil where his daughter and son-in-law served as missionaries. Cathy has taken an active role in the program by fostering almost 200 children since its inception. “I consider them my adopted grandchildren,” he explains. “They’re my grandchildren by choice. They chose me, and I chose them.” Although Cathy has embarked upon his ninth decade, significant changes in Chick-fil-A’s ownership or management style don’t appear on the horizon. Four of his 12 grandchildren have now joined the company in various positions. The third Cathy generation remains staunchly committed to the restaurant’s quality and reputation their grandfather established. “Opening on Sunday is not even for discussion,” Ross Cathy, the latest grandchild to join the Chick-fil-A team, commented to the Associated Press. “I’m part of the third generation, and we’re in agreement to always stay closed on Sunday.” “Being in the restaurant business is almost like a ministry,” says Cathy. “You have the ability to serve food to people and meet their physical needs, emotional needs, and sometimes even spiritual needs. It’s a ministry given to me by the Lord.”

Making Your Mate Feel Loved by Dr. Greg Smalley Do you ever do something you feel is loving for your mate, but he or she does not respond in a positive manner? One day, a well-meaning husband ran into this same frustration. The man wanted to do something special for his wife so he left work early and bought his wife some flowers, candy, and a card. When he arrived home, with great anticipation, he presented the gifts and exclaimed, “Hi honey! I love you so much!” Immediately his wife started crying. “Everything’s gone wrong today,” she explained sobbing. “The baby’s grouchy, the dishwasher won’t work. And now you come home drunk!” As illustrated by the wife’s reaction, sometimes we can do things for our mate to demonstrate our love, but it’s not what they need. Many of us understand what we need to feel loved. However, what we may need isn’t necessarily what our mate requires. For example, my wife Erin likes me to compliment her appearance. On the other hand, if

s Dr. Greg Smalley Erin never mentioned my appearance I wouldn’t give it a second thought. Therefore, since I don’t need Erin to compliment my appearance to feel loved, I then have a tendency not

discovering the specific things your mate needs to feel loved. In other words, discovering his or her builtin marriage manual. A simple way to uncover your mate’s marriage manual is by making a list of what he or she needs to feel loved. I encourage you to set aside several hours of uninterrupted time and write down these specific things. As you construct your list, remember not to judge, disagree, or invalidate the things your mate says. Remember, this is what he

We have a tendency to demonstrate our love in the same manner that we like to receive it. to notice her appearance. This is a common problem couples face: we have a tendency to demonstrate our love in the same manner that we like to receive it. The problem is our mate may need something totally different than what we may provide. One important factor in marital satisfaction is

or she needs to feel loved. Also, write down things which are observable. In other words, instead of writing down “I want intimacy,” write, “I need you to say you love me at least once a day,” “We will make love twice a week,” or “I need you to ask me about my day.” These behaviourally specific statements can

help your mate to translate vague statements into specific behaviours. After you understand what your mate needs to feel loved, then you need to be held accountable to follow through. Your spouse has given you a tremendous gift by listing what he or she needs to feel loved. You literally now possess your mate’s marriage manual. I strongly encourage you not to let this precious information go to waste. One of the best ways to be accountable is by asking a very simple question. On a regular basis, ask “On a scale from zero to 10, with 10 being the best, how have I done this week in making you feel loved according to your needs?” As you consistently ask this question, you will be able to love your mate according to her needs and not your own. Ea &TEE inSouth Carolina Say goodbye to summer with the whole family at one of the best beach and golf vacation spots in the U.S.

by Sarah Chestnutt Just because summer’s over, it doesn’t mean you have to stick around home waiting for it to return. Instead, gather the family and hop a plane to one of the top 10 family vacation spots in the United States. Myrtle Beach, also known as the Grand Strand, is on the southeast coast of South Carolina. The Myrtle Beach International Airport receives flights direct from Toronto, so it’s easy to get to with a connection. Made up of 12 communities with a combined population of over 200,000, it’s a great idea to rent a car to explore and take advantage of the hospitality of each unique place. School resumed for locals on Aug. 22, meaning deals abound and crowds are small. Unscathed by Hurricane Irene, it’s optimal time for weather, with temperatures in the mid-20s you won’t hesitate to spend time on the beach or fairway. From oceanfront resorts to cosy beach homes, there are plenty of places to leave the suitcases while you’re cruising the coast. Most hotels and resorts even offer themed vacation packages, including golf, cuisine, live entertainment, and more. While mentions of Myrtle Beach often conjure images of golf fairways, 60 miles of wide, sandy beaches have earned it Trip Advisor’s No. 1 U.S.

Best Beach, and No. 6 worldwide. From beach combing and splashing in the surf to thrilling watersports and deep sea fishing, a beach vacation offers endless opportunities for any age and adventure level. Stroll along the boardwalk and visit countless shops and seafood restaurants when it’s time to get out of the sun. After spending the day on shore, take a look at what’s under the water at Ripley’s Aquarium. With sea life from around the world and exhibits like Rio Amazon, Rainbow Rock, Living Gallery, and Ray Bay — where you can actually touch the rays in the water — it’s perfect for the whole family. New in 2011 is the Sharks — Perfect Predators exhibit. Taking visitors beyond the misconceptions and Jaws theme, it gives greater understanding and appreciation of sharks. When the kids are sick of sandcastles, visit the National Historic Landmark Brookgreen Gardens. A garden museum, it preserves native plants and displays art and sculpture. It’s the first public sculpture garden in the U.S., with over 1,400 works by over 350 sculptors. Be sure to visit before Oct. 31 to check out the seasonal butterfly house. Ready for a

bite? Drop in to Peaches Corner — home of the foot-long hotdog and the famous burger basket. Opening its doors in 1937, it’s one of the area’s first thriving businesses, and the family-owned restaurant has become a favourite with locals and tourists alike. Located in the heart of Myrtle Beach, there’s more than enough seating whether you’re with the family, or just hanging out with a buddy. Be sure to check out the downtown farmer’s market — autumn is when you’ll find fresh-offthe-tree peaches to enjoy. If you want to pick up the pace, head to Alligator Adventure and find yourself face-toface with some of nature’s fiercest reptiles. One of South Carolina’s most outstanding tourist attractions, it’s also one of the world’s largest reptile facilities. There are over 800 alligators, from eight inch infants to 15’ adults, as well as some of the world’s largest snakes and Galapagos turtles. And don’t forget to pay a visit to Utan — the largest crocodile in the U.S. at over 20’ long. Myrtle Beach is all about family, so when it’s time for some old-time, friendly fun, head to the amusement park by the sea — Family Kingdom. With over 30 rides, it offers some of the most memorable, and adrenaline-pumping, experiences in the Grand Strand for the young — and young at heart. It’s geared for the whole family, with Kiddie Land offering up fun especially for kids, even

Of course, you can’t visit Myrtle Beach without teeing up at one of the over 100 golf courses offered by the golf capital of the world. The premier destination for golfers, there are more than 3.1 million rounds played annually at oceanfront holes or in the midst of giant oaks draped in Spanish Brookgreen Gardens moss. Music legend Ronnie Milsap sees beyond his success to what really matters

revealed more than any other Milsap’s motivation. In 2009, he released Then Sings My Soul, his first gospel album. “I was shy to do this for a long time because I didn’t necessarily want to show the inside of my soul,” he told Christianity Today. “It was easy to hide behind ‘Daydreams About Night Things’ or ‘There’s No Getting Over Me’ or ‘Stranger In My House.’ It was easier to hide behind those big hits. Nobody ever asked me to dig deep inside of your spirit and expose that. That’s why it took me a while to be able to do that.” The inside of Milsap’s soul is filled with love for God – a relationship he began at age 12 after hearing a church sermon. “I am a Christian. I know I am a Christian, knowing that Jesus Christ is my Lord and Saviour,” he told The 700 Club. Today, Milsap lives with his wife of 45 years, Joyce. “I know she’s a beautiful woman. I know that, and more than that, it’s what she is inside,” he says. On his everpopular tours, Milsap performs a wide variety of music, including tracks from Country Again, which was released July 26. One lyric from Then Sings My Soul, however, stands out. “I once was

lost, but now I am found,” he sings. “Was blind, but now I see.” Because of his relationship with Jesus, Milsap knows his blindness is temporary. “I don’t see here … but I will see on the other side. I know I’ll get to see,” he told The 700 Club. “I know I’ll get to walk those golden streets … and I’ll get to see the Lord.”

He calls himself a crossover artist, but for his 29th and latest album, Ronnie Milsap has returned to his country roots. Capable of delivering country, blues, gospel, soul, R&B, or rock & roll, the versatile vocalist’s Country Again is his first country-oriented offering in six years. “I came to town to sing country music,” Milsap says. “And when left to my own devices, around the house, it’s what I love to sing. It all dates back to my roots in North Carolina, and it’s in my blood.” Making good music is definitely in Milsap’s blood; he’s won six Grammy awards, eight Country Music Association (CMA) awards and four Academy of Country Music (ACM) honours. The Robbinsville, N.C. native has also sat atop the country charts 40 times, trailing only George Straight and Conway Twitty. Yet it’s a career that almost never was. Instead of a recording artist, the now 68-yearold set out to become a lawyer after his teachers at the Governor Morehead School for the Blind in Raleigh recommended it. Blind from birth, Milsap had attended the school since age six and excelled academically. “I was one of those crazy guys who actually loved school, and I still feel that way today,” he told Christianity Today. “Education is the way to the future. By the time I was out of high school, I was typing 140 words a minute!” Milsap never got a chance to put those typing skills to professional use, however. Instead, his career drastically altered course at a Ray Charles concert in Atlanta. Backstage passes in hand, the aspiring lawyer planned to ask Charles for some advice – should the college student follow his teacher’s advice into the courtroom or his heart onto the stage? For Milsap possessed talent in more than just political science. Music was his first love – something he inherited from his grandparents. They raised their grandson since infancy, unfailingly listening to the Grand Ole Opry and attending church every weekend. Between the radio and church services, the youngster learned he could rapidly memorize music. At Governor Morehead, Milsap continued his musical journey, learning violin and piano. He

eventually racked up 12 years of classical music studies, and even formed a rock band in high school named The Apparitions. He wanted to be a musician, but his instructors discouraged him. “They said, ‘You can’t do that, because typically as a blind musician you will fail. You’ll wind up out on the street and become a liability to the state,’ ” he explained to Christianity Today. Milsap explained it all to Charles. Gesturing toward a piano, Charles asked him to play. He obliged, performing three songs. “He said, ‘Well, son, you can be a lawyer if want to, but you have a lot of music in your heart and if I were you, I’d follow what my heart tells me to do,’ ” he told The 700 Club. “I felt like that was an endorsement from Ray Charles, and I started looking around that summer for opportunities to play.” Milsap found plenty. After leaving college to pursue music fulltime, he signed with Scepter Records in 1965 and Warner Brothers in 1971. Though he enjoyed only moderate success there, he worked with artists like Charles, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, and Elvis Presley. His real breakthrough came after meeting country star Charley Pride, who encouraged him to move to Nashville and pursue a country career. Milsap took that advice, signing with RCA Records in 1973. By the next year, he had his first Grammy for the Kris Kristofferson-penned, “Please Don’t Tell Me How the Story Ends.” “Everybody said I was an overnight success,” Milsap says. “But that was a long, long night.” From there, the hits and accolades piled up. During a three-year period in the 1970s, Milsap churned out seven chart-topping singles in a row, including the Grammy-winning “(I’m A) Stand By My Woman Man.” In the 1980s, his style switched gears toward pop and rock, scoring him 11 No. 1 songs including simultaneous successes on country, pop, and adult contemporary charts. By then, he was already a member of his beloved Grand Ole Opry. “I’m a singer, not a vocal stylist,” he wrote in his autobiography, Almost Like a Song. “My breathing is correct; my enunciation is precise. Because of that, I can sing anybody’s music.” One genre of music, however,

Living Light News - September/October 2011 BURLAP TO CASHMERE Burlap To Cashmere burlaptocashmere.com Review by Josh McConnell

JukeBox

Ah, the 1990s. Known as the information age, it was the decade that saw the Internet go mainstream. Pop culture also continued trends from the 1980s with big hair, bright colours and jean jackets. It seems so long ago, yet it was 1994 when the band Burlap To Cashmere first debuted. After signing with a label in 1998, they released both a studio album and a live disc in the same year. Shortly after, they went separate ways working on solo material. Thirteen years since their first (and only) studio album, Burlap To Cashmere has returned with brand new material. Self titled, the album feels like the band never left. Back is the folk-meets-pop sound we once loved from the group. Songs such as “Build A Wall” and “Hey Man” are a little more gritty with their fast acoustic guitar strumming, meanwhile “Tonight” or “Love Reclaims The Atmosphere” drop the tempo for a ballad. Known for their great storytelling, “Live In A Van” continues this legacy by making it feel like you’re reading a book due to its details. With a Latin-inspired, folk-pop sound reminiscent to Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Cat Stevens, and even Simon & Garfunkel, Burlap To Cashmere is a very welcomed return. Pick this one up. DOWNHERE On The Altar Of Love downhere.com Review by Josh McConnell Canada may be the true north strong and free, but it’s also an excellent source for quality music. Case in point: pop rockers downhere who, despite first having a not-as-exciting debut album, exploded with their sophomore disc So Much For Substitutes. Since then, there seems to be no signs of the band slowing down with Juno Awards, Dove Awards and multiple “side” albums in between official studio discs. Now after three years, downhere is back with their fifth album. Titled On The Altar Of Love, the 12-track disc boasts over 46 minutes of music and continues the success of downhere. The band’s trademark dual vocalists are present, with the Freddie Mercury-esque Marc Martel and the raspy Jason Germain playing off each other perfectly, creating another winner. The contrasting pair has always been the band’s bread and butter, especially when combined with the upbeat and infectious pop-rock melodies. That being said, some Folk/Americana influences also find their way into the mix, which is a welcomed addition. Pop-rock fans, particularly those of Queen or even Mumford & Sons (thanks to the newfound Americana elements), should consider checking this one out.

going down as easy as a mocha frappacino. The journey-themed project is diverse and well-written, some of the tracks going so far as to evoke the rhythms of a long distance car ride (the atmospheric “Rain” almost gives a sense of the wipers’ monotonous back beats). The soulful title track actually opens with the recurring ping of a seat-belt reminder before quiet jazz chords lay out Owens’ journey into R&B praise. There’s still plenty of Owens’ signature pop sweetness (the truth-driven “Better Off” and jazzy “Before You Fly”) but she also mixes things up a bit, injecting a gospel flair with the buzzy “Lay It Down” and even slowing down and adding strings to the Stevie Wonder classic “Higher Ground.” I always appreciate when artists stretch out, take a few chances, but it’s especially sweet when one of Owens’ caliber wanders off the beaten path. And don’t miss “Better That Way,” a cleverly playful torch song written to a distant celebrity. It’s a joy to Get In when the driver’s having this much fun. JASON GRAY A Way To See in the Dark jasongraymusic.com Review by Kevan Breitinger Jason Gray, a 2010 ASCAP award winner and tour mate to Sara Groves, Third Day, and tobyMac, releases his third studio album and it’s everything you’d expect from the well-respected songwriter, known for his willingness to open a vein for his craft. Many of these sparkling lyrics, razor-sharp and insightful, deal with fear, its many tentacles, and the sanctuary we find in the heart of God. The opening first single, “Remind Me Of Who I Am,” a quiet pop track, prompts Christians to remember their standing and security: “I’m the one you love/ that will be enough.” Many songs are similar in temperament: mellow guitar-driven pop, heavy on the lyrical potency, but each one is distinguished by richly layered vocals, big drum textures, or other pristine arrangement facets. The real delight comes, as always, in Gray’s ability to address the human condition with brave accessibility, giving up, literally, a way to see in the dark. My favourite tracks include “No Thief Like Fear,” with its rowdy intensity and soaring bridge, and the warm acoustic “Without Running Away,” notable for its eastern vibe and encouraging message to keep on walking toward love, without letting fear or pain drive you away. Introspective but still energetic, this one lights up the night. MAT KEARNEY Young Love matkearney.com Review by Kevan Breitinger Mat Kearney’s first three albums showed up on numerous popular TV shows (30 Rock, Grey’s Anatomy, The Hills, among others) as well as landing him four Top 20 hits, and tours with Sheryl Crow and John Mayer, all of which qualify as impressive credits. However, most intriguing to me in the case of Young Love, his fourth album, is the fact that Kearney found lyrical inspiration in the conversations enjoyed while driving a Nashville cab for several years. His quirky mix of hip-hop beats and acoustic soul-pop provide the perfect bed for his strong story-telling chops, first nabbing

GINNY OWENS Get In, I’m Driving ginnyowensmusic.com Review by Kevan Breitinger It’s been five years since we’ve heard from three-time Dove Award winner Ginny Owen, but if Get In, I’m Driving is any indication, she has used the time well. A pleasantly surprising departure from her usual pop sound, Get In is silky and smooth, its jazz-tinged R&B

attention on debut Bullet and now apparent immediately with the opening clap-happy beats of “Hey Mama.” While Young Love is somewhat of a return to form in terms of mood and even melody in some cases, this opener, “Ships in the Night,” and “Count On Me” also reveal a maturing precision. In other words, Kearney has only gotten better with time. Steady beats contrast well with the fluid, floaty melody line of the nuanced “Down,” while the spoken words and infectious chorus of “Chasing The Light” are fresh and energetic. The funk groove of “She Got The Honey” is reminiscent of Paul Simon at his most playful, and “Young, Dumb, and In Love” is straight-up evocative bliss. More mainstream music success coming up with Young Love. MATT HAMMITT Every Falling Tear bowensheart.com Review by Josh McConnell Since Sanctus Real’s lead singer Matt Hammitt and his wife had their second child, they have taken a crash course on faith. Their child Bowen was born with half a heart. With a condition called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, little Bowen beat the odds and survived. It hasn’t been without its difficulties, such as Bowen’s heart stopping shortly after birth or his multiple heart surgeries. Though the story is much longer and more emotional than this, as one can imagine, the good news is Bowen is alive and well today as he approaches his first birthday. Through such hard times, Hammitt was comforted by God and what he does best: writing music. These songs are being released on his first solo record, titled Every Falling Tear. The signature vocals are still there, but the album is much more somber and feels very ballad-esque the whole way through. Songs are about tough times and trying to make it through, but always have inspiration at the end of the story. With Hammitt’s signature vocals, Every Falling Tear feels more like a collection of Sanctus Real ballads than anything else. The focus of this record is on the stories and it certainly tugs at your heart the whole way through. SWITCHFOOT Vice Verses switchfoot.com Review by Kevan Breitinger Fifteen years together, seven highly successful albums generating numerous awards and sellout shows, and Switchfoot continues to scale new creative walls with Vice Verses, their 8th wonder. Thematically it addresses the polarity of the human experience, and the band is fearless in exploring the same tensions sonically. The 12 diverse tracks push from the scorching guitars of anthemic openers “Afterlife” and “The Original” (think Foo Fighters), to the hard-driving urgency of “The War Inside,” the taut lyrics pinning you down mercilessly: “Eyes open, open wide/ I can feel it like a crack in my spine/ I can feel it in the back of my mind/ I am the war inside.” The captivatingly beautiful “Restless” brings U2 to mind, and the masterful “Selling the News” continues the lyrical prowess. Boldly moving into the spoken word/poetry slam realm, Jon Foreman takes no prisoners in this rant on our media-mad culture: “a powerful dog has been chasing his tail/ the lowest common denominator prevails” and “suspicion is the new religion.” Throughout the album, the band’s yearning for more overflows, from the quietly pulsating “Thrive” (“a warm body doesn’t mean I’m alive”), to the energetic “Rise Above It.” More U2 moments with the airy closer “Where I Belong” wind up what has to be one of the best projects from these Christian rock pioneers. Vice Verses is a sure thing.

Bethany decides not to go on a mission trip, disappointing Sarah Hill, her youth group leader. On Oct. 31, Bethany is surfing with her friend, Alana, and Alana’s family near a remote beach. A 14-foot tiger shark comes out of nowhere and rips off her arm. Alana’s father Holt, played by Kevin Sorbo, and the other members of her family rush Bethany to the hospital. Everyone is praying fervently to God. Miraculously, she survives. When Bethany leaves the hospital, she finds out life has changed irrevocably. Simple tasks are now almost impossible. She tries surfing again and struggles, but shows some promise. After a night where she questions what happened to her, she decides to go on a mission trip to an area of Thailand hit by a tsunami. On the trip, she learns God works out all things together for the good of those who love Him. She returns home with new resolve to become a champion surfer again. The movie tells the true story of Bethany Hamilton, a rising star on the teenage surfing circuit who loses her arm in a shark attack. A day doesn’t go by anymore that some mention of “the cloud” isn’t made by the media. Everyone from individuals to corporation moguls are jumping onboard and helping the momentum to continually pick up speed. Of course not everyone understands just what the cloud is or how it pertains to their personal Internet and computer usage. As a matter of fact though, if you or anyone else reading this column uses an email address provided by Google (Gmail), Hotmail, or Yahoo then you already have experience with the cloud – Internet-based software and services. The same can be said if you ever play online games, use chat rooms, or social networks such as Facebook. All of these great services are hosted on a computer server located somewhere far away from the users. The bulk of the computer processing involved in using one of these services is handled by the remote computer. The continued popularity of the cloud is now being

computing. In fact, the people at Google have created a computer operating system costing a fraction of both the Microsoft and Apple systems and is configured totally on cloud based applications and services. The one major drawback to such an operating system is if a person finds themselves without Internet access most of the

features of Google’s operating system will not work. I’m suspecting those behind Internet and computer technology developments are quite confident that continued, uninterrupted Internet access for everyone will someday be a reality – probably sooner rather than later. Some people I know are using the many free accounts being offered by various online companies for remote data storage. For example they store their photos at the Flickr website located at flickr.com, and then they store their MP3 collection online through the Amazon Cloud Drive service at amazon. com/clouddrive. By the way, these aren’t just storage services per se because one can display and view their images and even play their MP3’s straight from the cloud. Virtual software is changing the way people use computers – and it’s easy to get on board with it.

PROJECT DAD by Todd Cartmell Clinical psychologist and father of two boys, Todd Cartmell offers a fresh approach to the typical parenting book. Project Dad is a blueprint to help any dad become the best father their kids could ask for. His humourous and personal style along with his professional insight makes this an enjoyable yet informative book to read. Cartmell’s five key areas essential for becoming a great dad are: how you look at, talk to, connect with, act toward, and lead your children. The author gives point by point steps to creating a warmer communication style and responding to sibling aggravation. He gives practical suggestions for changing the way readers respond to their children as a referee to becoming their coach and bringing out the greatness in kids. Cartmell provides ideas for seeing and encouraging the special abilities, passions, and personality traits children possess. Each chapter includes a summary of key points and a useful list of “to dos” to help put Cartmell’s practical advice into action. Project Dad is a valuable resource for any parent.
