rofessional golfer Kevin Streelman can tell you exactly how long the road to success is: 400,000 miles, with pit stops at Motel 6. And his vehicles of choice on that six-year journey? A Nissan Altima and a few other less-than-flashy cousins. No matter. Because now, with the Tampa Bay Championship trophy in hand – his first official win on the PGA Tour – the 34-year-old knows he’s headed in the right direction. “My greatest strength as a golfer is my perseverance and my determination to improve,” Streelman tells Living Light News. Golf fans saw
that in overdrive on Mar. 17, 2013 as the Winfield, Ill. native bested Boo Weekley for the championship win by two shots at the Copperhead course in Florida. Bogey-free over his final 37 holes, Streelman even holed out a 50-yard chip in the last round. With only one other major tour victory (winning the multi-course, $1 million inaugural Kodak Challenge in 2009), the win gives credence to Streelman’s slow-and-steady “Zach Johnson model.” Like the 2007 Masters Champion, Streelman spent six years playing on mini tours before turning pro. The
5-10, 175-pound righty hopes the similarities continue this season. “I hope to finish strong in the FedEx Cup with a Top 10 finish,” he says. “I’d like to play on the President’s Cup team this year, and I’m looking to break into the Top 20 in world rankings.” Those ambitions differ drastically from Streelman’s high school wish list. The baby of three and youngest by a decade, Streelman grew up attending his brother’s and sister’s sporting events. continued on page 2

Once his siblings left for college, he was “pretty much an only child. Golf was something that my parents and I played together.” Yet his athletic prowess didn’t end there. Streelman also excelled at – and loved – basketball and tennis. By his senior year of high school, however, his trophies from several junior golf tournaments pointed him toward a golf scholarship at Duke University. With the chance to develop his game (and he did, though only winning one collegiate tourney) while watching the famous Blue Devil basketball team, Streelman graduated in 2001. But now what? His pro prospects weren’t looking too hot. His father, once headed to Major League Baseball but stopped by the Vietnam War, advised him to try anyway. “If you don’t take the chance,” Dennis Streelman told his son, “you’re going to one day look back and wish you had.” That was enough for Streelman, and it’s a good thing too. Over the next half-dozen years, as he slogged his way through mini tours and across the country in his mother’s Altima, he wouldn’t get more than encouraging words from anyone. There was the time that his Chicago-area sponsors bailed, leaving Streelman with only $400, and then the year that he didn’t make a single cut and lost all his money. Or how he couldn’t even nail down an Tim assistant Tebowcoaching position at Duke. And don’t forget the way he scrubbed clubs and caddied at Whisper Rock for the extra money
and course time. Streelman, currently living in Scottsdale, Ariz., eventually became a member at that golf course, winning its club championship the year after finishing the PGA’s Q-School in 2007. “I know where I came from – I know what my beliefs are and my identity as a person and not as a golfer,” he told Chicago Land Golf. “I refuse to allow the score to represent me as a person. As soon as I [came] to that realization, it just puts golf in its place. Incidentally, that was when I started to play really well.” That key realization almost came too late. Consumed with making the final cut, Streelman had previously ignored suggestions to read the book Golf’s Sacred Journey by David Cook. Though raised in a Christian home, he favoured a frat-boy life until he met his future wife Courtney. Yet even as they prepared to marry in 2008, Streelman knew his top priority wasn’t his relationships with her or Jesus Christ – it was with his clubs. The book, with its nearly-identical protagonist, changed him. After all, it didn’t matter if he shot a 60 one Sunday; the sports world only cared if he could repeat it every weekend. Jesus, on the other hand, loved Streelman simply for who he was and not his performance. “It was such a shallow existence, and I didn’t want to be that person anymore,” he told Fellowship
have been sold into brothels. Every person has value in Christ’s eyes. “[This realization] blew me away! And it’s the driving inspiration of everything that I do.” Teng refers to Jesus’ mission statement in Luke 4:1819 of the Bible, which she endeavours to follow: “He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” As a university student at Trinity Western University, Teng co-founded a club that got the city of Langley, B.C. talking about human trafficking. In 2009, she helped launch “Undies for Africa” a campaign that helps protect Zambian women from rape. Then, she came across a call for entries to Miss B.C. “I did it originally to challenge myself because I was tired of living in fear,” she told Converge. “I knew without a doubt I was going to use this platform to talk about human trafficking and oppression of women and individuals worldwide.” Three beauty titles later, Teng remains true to her calling – whether it’s buying lipstick from Radiant Cosmetics, a company that donates 20 per cent of profits to fight human trafficking; advocating for World Vision and the Dalit Freedom Network and speaking publicly on their behalf to raise awareness; or chatting with women at Deborah’s Gate in Vancouver, a safe house for victims of human trafficking. And while 27 million is a huge number, the success stories Teng sees reminds her of a God who works miracles. In 2011, she visited Cambodia and Thailand, two of the world’s largest child sex slavery hot spots. She witnessed Ratanak, a Christian after-care program in Cambodia, offer a safe environment for children rescued from the sex trade. These children have been raped for profit multiple times before their seventh birthday. But with just a few years in the program, they are not just transformed, but are thriving. “In my mind, that’s Jesus. That’s what Jesus came here to do – bring life and life to the fullest!”
of Christian Athletes. “Courtney and I realized that, if we really believed who Jesus was and what He did for us, it was time for us to start walking the walk. We walked back to the Lord together, and our relationships with Him and each other have never been stronger.” And just in time. The 34-year-old recently won his first PGA Tour in his 153rd start. Suddenly everything clicked: the humble plod to the top – and as high as 12th on this year’s PGA money list, the relationship struggles, the push and pull between golf, family and faith. As he held his trophy, he says, “I now know why God has not allowed me to have one of these until I knew the proper place for it in my life,” he says. Today, Streelman regularly evaluates his schedule, focus and priorities. “Golf should never be more important than third or fourth on the list,” he says. “My relationship with Jesus demands me to trust His plan, and not my own, both on and off of the course. My trust is in Him and His plans for my life.”

Newsbriefs Love Disarms Gunman DECATUR, GA — Antoinette Tuff lives up to her name. The McNair Discovery Learning Academy’s bookkeeper recently talked down gunman Michael Brandon Hill who threatened to kill police at a standoff last month. For over an hour, Tuff spoke to the 20-year-old about her struggles and convinced him to give himself up to police, while activating a signal that warned her school colleagues of the emergency. Asked how she remained calm, the committed Christian credited God. “I realized at that time that it was bigger than me,” she told local media. “He was really a hurting young man so I just started praying for him.” Tuff told Hill
how her husband of 26 years left her, but she carried on with life, working and caring for a son with multiple disabilities. “I let him know ... that it would be okay. Then [I] let him know that he could just give himself up ... I told him to put [the guns] on the table, empty his pockets.” Hill surrendered, thanks to Tuff’s intervention. “I just want you to know I love you, though, okay?” she told Hill. “That’s a good thing that you’re just giving up and don’t worry about it. We all go through something in life.” When people hailed Tuff as a hero, she passed the credited to God. “That was nobody but God. I can’t even put that on myself. I was praying hard.”
NASHVILLE,TN — Jonathan Willard drove almost 1,000 km to Nashville, prepared to fight for a spot on the Tennessee Titans’ NFL roster. He had no idea he’d encounter a bigger challenge along the way. Ahead of him on Interstate 40, Willard spotted black smoke coming out of a car. Suddenly, the car’s rear end was in flames but the driver was oblivious to it. Willard sped up, flashed his lights and honked at the driver to get her attention. He eventually got her to pull over. “As soon as I got to the car, I saw three small kids in the backseat and a dog,” Willard shared at the Titans’ training camp. “So for me, I’m thinking ‘Hurry up and get everybody out and get
An Impactful Experience AUSTIN, TX — Nikki Carroll remembers seeing her son Cadyn slumped over in his seat after an 18-wheeler truck slammed into their van on July 15, 2013. Her three younger children experienced close calls – her 10-month-old son dangled in his car seat, her daughter’s head was millimetres from being crushed, and her fouryear-old son was bleeding. Even her husband Grant incurred a head wound. Miraculously, all were discharged quickly from the hospital except Cadyn, who sustained shear damage to his brain and was kept in the ICU. Ninety percent of people with this injury either die or enter a vegetative state. “We always knew God could miraculously heal people, but knowing something and experiencing something are two very different things,” Grant said. “All we
could do was pray in the name of Jesus and trust that His power is real.” The Carrolls’ friends and family also prayed for the eightyear-old boy’s recovery. Five days after the accident, Cadyn woke up. His paralyzed left side soon regained movement. He spoke seconds after doctors said it would take months before he could speak again. He was able to feed himself, and he walked that afternoon. Instead of weeks in the ICU and months of inpatient rehab, Cadyn walked out of the hospital two weeks after the accident. He’s now almost 100 per cent. His remarkable recovery left doctors and nurses stunned, grasping for a scientific explanation. But Nikki and her family are convinced of what happened. “We say ‘Our God is greater.’ It’s not just some cliché Christian sentiment, it’s the truth.”
QBs Put A Ring On It
Things Heat Up For Linebacker them away from the car.’ ... I’m thinking the car might go up anytime.” As the driver looked on dazed, the 23-year-old rookie linebacker and another motorist got the three kids and their dog away from the burning car. “Probably two minutes after we got everyone to safety, the car blew up once. Then, probably a couple minutes after that, it blew up again – probably about four times.” Willard made sure the family was okay and waited for the firefighters to put out the flames before going on his way. “I just feel like I was in the right place at the right time. I give all the glory to God,” said the self-effacing Clemson, Ga. native. “I just felt like I was there for a reason.”

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Life in the NFL may not be conducive to marital faithfulness, but two young QBs are showing their commitment in a unique way. Philadelphia Eagles’ Matt Barkley and Cincinnati Bengals’ Andy Dalton have both been spotted sporting rubber wedding rings during practice and at the gym. Barkley, who married his college sweetheart Brittany Langdon in July, wears a black band while training and is planning to switch to a silver rubber ring. “My wife didn’t really notice at first, but when she did, she really appreciated it,” the 22-year-old told The Los Angeles Times. “I really only wear this [at the gym], then when I get out of the shower I put the other one
on.” While Barkley’s teammates don’t seem to pay much attention to the ring, Dalton isn’t as fortunate. In fact, the ring was recently featured in an episode of HBO’s Hard Knocks. After teammates and coaches learned of Dalton’s Qalo ring, the 25-year-old became the subject of merciless ribbing. Yet both men wear their rubber rings boldly to honour their wedding vows. But there’s a greater relationship commitment both QBs have made that they want to honour for life. As Barkley says, “[God] loves me unconditionally and does pursue me.” For Dalton, it’s a commitment he’s had since third grade. “It is truly a relationship,” says Dalton. “All He wants is to spend some time with me.”
A Porn Star Transformation SAN DIEGO, CA — Exporn star Brittni Ruiz, whose stage name was Jenna Presley, recently appeared on The View about her decision to leave the industry and follow Jesus Christ. The 26-year-old, once named by Maxim as one of the world’s hottest porn stars, began working in adult films at 18. “In the beginning, I felt beautiful – I felt like I have found my self worth,” said Ruiz. “I never found love in my life and was looking for it in all the wrong places.” But seven years showed her the industry’s ugly side. “After a while, I felt destroyed, hopeless. I felt helpless. I tried to commit suicide several times. I was miserable.” She first met the XXXchurch team, a Christian group that aids people with porn addictions and ministers to people in the adult industry, at
Hudsons Harbour No Hard Feelings NEW YORK, NY — When New York Mets’ Eric Young Jr. inadvertently broke the right ankle of Atlanta Braves’ Tim Hudson during a bang bang play on first base and ended the starting pitcher’s season, the distraught outfielder immediately checked on Hudson who was writhing in pain after the collision. “I pretty much knew it was probably broke right as I did it, and that’s why I sprinted right back to him and tried to console him as much as I could and apologize,” Young told ESPN New York. There couldn’t have been much worse timing for the injury as Hudson was playing his best baseball ever in the final year of his contract. Surprisingly to many, Hudson’s wife Kim

Five Ways To Win People by Andrew Hess
H
ave you ever wished you were more of a people person? Maybe you occasionally rub people the wrong way. Or perhaps you wish it was easier to make friends. Author Les Giblin wrote, “The people … who are the most successful, and enjoy life the most, are those who ‘have a way’ with other people.” s Andrew Hess I’ve had to work at cultivating relationships throughout my life. I’ve never considered myself a natural people person. I’ve made mistakes in relationships and have had to learn how to treat people well. I’m no relational expert, but here are a few things I’ve picked up along the way.
2. Remember the one interest we all share. Relationships often form around shared interests and all people are interested in themselves at some level. Now I don’t mean they are self-interested in a narcissistic way. But all people like to talk about their own experiences and perspectives. When you start a relationship, take a special interest in their experiences and interests. Pay attention to the gifts and talents other people demonstrate and find ways to encourage them. Praise their talents publicly. Show them you are rooting for them. Giblin wrote, “Men and women who have the most influence with
Criticism may be warranted, but there are tactful ways to correct. other people … believe other people are important.” 3. Seek to understand people, not to change people. Relationships are much healthier when two people genuinely seek to understand each other. When conflicts arise – as they often do – most people try to change the other. Instead, first seek to understand what causes them to do the things they do. The Bible’s book of Proverbs reminds us, “A friend loves at all times” (17:17). If we can listen and lovingly determine underlying causes of disagreements, subsequent conversations will go smoother. 4. Never ever attack someone’s ego. This is a big one. There are times when other people will make mistakes or fail. Never ever make someone look bad publicly. This can destroy relationships quick. If you have to correct someone, do so privately and let them save face. Let them know you assume the best. As Giblon put it, “Tell a man that his ideas are stupid, and he will defend them all the more.” Many relationships would be spared if people learned this lesson. Criticism may be warranted, but there are tactful ways to correct, ways which save and even build relationships. Proverbs 20:3 teaches that wise people avoid quarrels, but fools go looking for them. 5. Avoid sarcasm and joking at someone’s expense. This is a lesson I’ve had to learn and re-learn. I can be pretty sarcastic at times. But I’ve learned to never make other people the target of sarcasm. Most people will play it off like they don’t care, but deep down no one wants to be the butt of the joke. “Fools mock” (Proverbs 14:8). If you are prone towards sarcasm, don’t use it to injure. I regularly review these truths and remind myself of the reward of healthy relationships. As we value our relationships, we will certainly reap the rewards of life together. Dear Phil: Got Joy? by Phil Callaway
D
ear Mr. Callaway, I enjoy your books and humour. In my early teens, laughter was easy. I’m 17 now and the joy is gone. How do you live a life of joy? P.S. Here’s a cheesy joke for you. There were two peanuts walking down the street. One was a-salted. Signed, Blaine Stafford Dear Blaine, Thanks for your honesty. The first thing you need to do is find a new joke. The one about the peanut being a-salted should be replaced with this one: Did you hear about the fire at the circus? It was intense. Okay, maybe the peanut joke isn’t so bad. First let me say, I’ve been 17. It’s not easy. I was skinny, pimply, had girl trouble, and my car sounded like a cat with hiccups. Seventeen is hard. Fifty-one is better, but you don’t have to wait that long to bring the joy back. First, realize that joy is a bit like those missing socks from the dryer: it’s something you might not find by looking for it. Joy comes from making
s Phil Callaway little decisions to choose the best when the worst shows up. So, wake up right each day. If you have to crawl back into bed and start over, go ahead. Next have a wake up song ready. One that’ll focus your mind on things that last forever. You’ll find there’s nothing – not even girl trouble – that God and you can’t handle together. Next say a quick prayer of thanks. You woke up in a bed. Breakfast is 20 steps away. Too many people don’t have either. Then say something nice to the first person you see. Try a compliment about food or clothes or hair. Be careful at first – you’ll shock them. When you leave the house, remember to go mad. Go Make A Difference. Like Darth
Vader and Luke Skywalker, you’ll have the opportunity all day to choose the dark or the light. Brighten the world for others and the sun will shine on you. 1. Value relationships. One of the first keys to having healthy relationships is valuing them. Make it a priority to nurture the relationships you have and build relationships with people you meet. C.S. Lewis once wrote: “Friendship is the greatest of worldly good. Certainly to me it is the chief happiness of life. If I had to give a piece of advice to a young man about a place to live, I think I should say, ‘sacrifice almost everything to live where you can be near your friends.’ ”

Says Who? Using Words of Grace
From Grey To Glorious
s Marcia Laycock by Marcia Laycock
I
t was one of those mornings that don’t start off very well. My alarm clock didn’t work and my husband forgot that I had to be up early to make it to an appointment, so he didn’t wake me. When I finally opened my eyes, I had just enough time to throw on some clothes and rush out the door. I made it to the appointment, but by the time it was over my stomach was growling and I was pining for a cup of decaf. So, true to the traditions of my country and culture, I headed for a Tim Hortons donut shop. The line for the drivethrough was long, as usual, and I wasn’t feeling very patient by the time I gave
my order at the speakerphone. As I edged forward to pick up my coffee and breakfast sandwich, I was digging in my purse for money and not paying too much attention to where I was going. No, I didn’t bump into the car ahead of me, but I wasn’t aware of what was going on around me either. I didn’t see them until they were right in front of me – two little boys, perhaps four or five years old, dressed in identical blue shirts. They were blonde with huge blue eyes
They were blonde with huge blue eyes and wide toothless grins. and wide, toothless grins. With big enthusiastic waves, they greeted each car as the vehicles rolled by the large windows. My reaction was immediate – I burst into a smile of my own, laughed out loud in fact, and waved enthusiastically back. It was then I noticed that the crowd inside
5
the restaurant was taking great delight in watching the reaction of those driving by. Everyone was smiling. I imagine God’s delight at those two little boys who, just by being themselves, brightened the day of everyone around them. I imagine He was pleased because they were just being who He had made them to be – a blessing to others. We delight Him in that way too. He has made us to be a blessing to one another. In the Bible, the writer of Ephesians said, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10). Every time we bless someone around us, He is blessed. It doesn’t take much – often just a smile or an encouraging word is enough to turn someone’s day from grey to glorious. All we have to do is be who we were made to be. Those two little boys were doing it. We can too. henever someone is working hard to make a solid argument on something they’re passionate about, it can be very frustrating. I always advise against trying to turn the argument around with “I’m rubber and you’re glue.” “Says you” doesn’t do much for a person’s credibility either. Using words as a weapon is always counterproductive. It doesn’t take long to figure out that words really don’t bounce – they can wound. And when we’re bent on wounding, we miss a big opportunity to grow in character and wisdom. Proverbs 18:2 of the Bible says, “A fool does not delight in understanding, but only wants to show off his opinions.” Trading wisdom just to show off? Bad trade. Not only do we miss the opportunity for growing in
understanding, but we miss the blessing of blessing others. Every time you use your words to bless someone else, it becomes a rubber blessing of grace that bounces right back around to stick to you. Paul teaches in Ephesians 4:29 to “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” The word “corrupting” is from a Greek word that was originally used for rotten, putrefied food. I just recently recovered from merely looking at a bag of spinach in my college daughter’s fridge. We were digging around for salad fixings and our conversation went something like this:
Using words as a weapon is always counterproductive. Me: “Kaley, your spinach has brown juice sloshing around in the bottom of the bag.” Kaley: “Yeah, don’t eat that. Also, don’t eat that bacon.” Me: “No prob. I never eat bacon that’s … blue.” The smell made my eyes water a little. Major reek-age. Do I even need to say that I wasn’t the least bit tempted to put any of
that in my mouth? How sad it is when we pay more attention to the salad we put in our mouth than the words we let out of it. We’re told in that Ephesians passage that we’re to choose a word that “fits the occasion” – words that are just right. That brings us back to the blessing of blessing. Paul doesn’t only tell us to stay away from the words that reek, but he gives us specific instructions for how our words should smell instead. When people get a whiff of our words, they should be taking in the sweet scent of grace. It’s not about what “says you.” It’s not about what says me either. It all comes back around to “says Him.” Jesus Himself said, “For the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart,” (Matthew 12:34). I don’t want to leak liquefied spinach or bacon that might move. I want to allow Jesus to fill my heart so much that my heart overflows gracious words to others around. Not “Yo Mama!” Not “Talk to the hand.” The scent of grace. Not “So’s your face.” Rhonda Rhea is a radio personality and conference speaker across North America. She is a wife, mother, and author of several fun and fruitful books. Forgiving Ourselves by Dr. Charles F. Stanley
D
o you have a hard time forgiving someone? Is it an enemy, or a loved one? Or is it yourself? Sometimes the most difficult person to pardon is oneself, but forgiveness is never complete until that has happened. The apostle Peter must have dealt with selfcondemnation as well. At s Dr. Charles F. Stanley the time of Jesus’ greatest need, Peter denied knowing Him (Matt. 26: 69-75). His own unfaithfulness must have been even harder to bear because he thought he would never fall away (Matt. 26:33). His betrayal probably replayed a thousand times in his mind, making him wish he could take back his words. But he couldn’t. Then there was Paul. Once he “saw the light,” he regretted his history of persecuting the church (Acts 9:1-4; 1 Timothy 1:5-16). How could someone with such a horrendous track record become the greatest church planter and evangelist of his time? Both of these men discovered the secret to overcoming failure and sin. They understood and accepted God’s forgiveness. They laid down the guilt of their sins at the cross and refused to carry it any longer. That’s why the Lord could use them so effectively. Those of us who by faith have been redeemed by Christ are completely forgiven and declared “not guilty.” The truth is, a self-directed unforgiving spirit is just as destructive as holding a grudge against someone else. How can I continue to hold in bondage one whom God has forgiven? How can I not forgive me?
Symptoms Of Unforgiveness
Self-punishment. One sign of an unforgiving spirit is a desire that the one who did wrong be punished. Every morning the guilt awaits us, and we dutifully wear it like a backpack all day
long. Some people even abstain from the good things God wants them to enjoy, because they think such self-denial will pay for their transgression. Self-imposed suffering adds nothing to His completed atonement on our behalf (Eph. 2:8-9). Avoidance. Humans are masters at attempting to escape their guilt without actually dealing with it. Some try to deaden their feelings through unhealthy or excessive behaviours that promise relief: alcohol, drugs or overeating are just a few ways people cope with regret. At some point we must face it, or remorse will eat us up inside, damaging our souls (Psalms 32:3-4). Unworthiness. If you feel undeserving because of past failures, you become spiritually paralyzed. We need grace – God’s undeserved favour toward us. To hang onto feelings of unworthiness is detrimental to our Christian life (Acts 10:15). Uncertainty. Dwelling on past wrongs leaves believers under a dark cloud of uncertainty. Despite their assurance of salvation, they are never quite sure
Freedom from the prison of guilt and regret is only a choice away. where they stand with God, and they never experience the peace that passes understanding (Phil. 4:6-7). Sometimes they even wonder “What will go wrong next? Such thinking undermines trust in the Lord and builds a barrier between God and us. The Lord keeps no record of our transgression, and neither should we (Psalms 103:12). Distorted thinking. Self-condemnation distorts our thinking. Instead of reasoning from the truth of Scripture, those who are filled with remorse rely on their own logic and emotions. God’s Word says all my sins are forgiven, but if I hang onto them, I’m denying His promise and affirming my own thoughts. If all I see is my sin, my feelings, my unworthiness, my guilt, and my regret, then I am all wrapped up in myself (Heb. 12:1-3).
Why We Won’t Forgive Ourselves
Unbelief. The primary cause is unbelief – prioritizing feelings and human reasoning above the truth of God’s Word. Scripture says Jesus bore the penalty for our transgressions
(Romans 3:23-26). When Christ died on the cross, He said, “It is finished” (John 19:30). Performance. When we are so disappointed that we can’t forgive ourselves, we’ve set up a standard based on performance. God’s forgiveness isn’t distributed on the basis of a rating system for sins, and ours shouldn’t be either. Acceptance. Tragically, after living under self-condemnation for a long time, believers can begin to see that as a normal way of life. But it’s not. Christ promised us freedom from guilt along with the abundant life that accompanies a cleansed conscience. Penal institutions have a word for inmates who have become so acclimated to prison life they’re afraid of trying to function outside: they’re described as having become institutionalized. That’s what happens when believers don’t release their guilt. They huddle in their cell, even though Christ has thrown open the door and invited them to step out into the freedom He purchased for them.
How Do I Forgive Myself?
1. Acknowledge. The first step is to recognize that you have not forgiven yourself. Face up to this fact, and begin to deal with the issue. 2. Repent. Tell the Lord that you realize your selfcondemnation is a sin. Then accept and thank Him for His forgiveness. 3. Believe God. Reaffirm your trust in the truth of Scripture. If you have personally believed that Jesus paid the penalty for your sins, and accepted Him as your Saviour, God says He has removed your transgressions as far as the east is from the west. 4. Choose Forgiveness. Based on God’s Word, in faith, choose to forgive yourself. Please notice that feelings aren’t mentioned anywhere in these steps. Each one is a choice based on truth, not emotions. Stop replaying in your mind the old recording of your sin, which stirs up guilt, but instead replay the truths of Scripture. Jesus came to set the captives free. As you take hold of His forgiveness and release your guilt, you’ll walk out of that jail of self-condemnation into the joy of abundant life. Dr. Charles F. Stanley, author of more than 50 books, is the pastor of First Baptist Church of Atlanta, GA and founder of In Touch Ministries. In Touch programming is available in Canada on television and radio. Alberta 2013 Invites People To
Question
A year ago, Stuart Copping believed religion was a joke. “I spent years making fun of it, asking believers, ‘How could you? It’s not logical.’ ” Then, in June, turning 30 and reflecting on his life and relationships, Copping realized he’d made mistakes. “I saw how selfish I’d been living. I missed the first three years of my daughter’s life.” His daughter’s mom was a believer and Copping, respectful of her beliefs and wanting to connect better with her, started reading the Bible. This led him to ask questions and talk with a pastor at a nearby church. Copping heard about the Alpha Course, an introductory course where anyone can ask any question about the Christian faith – no question is off-limits. “Curiousity kept me going to Alpha,” the former skeptic says. “[At first] I didn’t totally believe everything.” As Copping learned more, he started reading the Bible more and kept going to Alpha because he’d discovered that Alpha was for everyone: “People who believe and people looking to ask questions.” And Copping had lots of questions. “He didn’t preach,” Copping recalls. “He asked if I would be comfortable praying out loud.” Praying didn’t come naturally. “I asked Jesus, ‘If You’re real, help me with the messes I’ve made in my life and the emptiness I feel.’ ” What he discovered took him by surprise. “True Christianity, when talked about in an open atmosphere like that, had such a solid foundation. The truth just kept coming out unchanged no matter the questions or attacks. ” Just like Copping, Sheridan James also needed
to discover true Christianity for herself. James grew up experiencing violence and abuse at home. And although she knew about God, she said “I never understood God’s goodness.” At the request of her boyfriend, the single mother of two began attending church. James remembers praying a simple, desperate plea. “I was driving, and pulled over and said, ‘I can’t do life by myself.’ ” That simple prayer on the side of the road left
James – in her own words – “changed.” “I knew things were different somehow, but I didn’t know what to do next.” A friend told her about Alpha. “I said I’d only go to Alpha if they held one at Second Cup.” That Sunday, there was a church announcement that Alpha would start meeting at Second Cup. She finished the Alpha course and plans to attend another this September. “It was answering questions I had, and answering ones
I never had the words for.” Copping’s experience with Alpha has been life-changing. “It’s great to be a part of letting people hear the facts about Jesus, and letting people ask their questions knowing they won’t be judged or put down.” Alberta 2013 is a province-wide outreach that aims to inform 30,000 Albertans with billboards, bus and TV ads and “Question Everything” about the Christian faith through the Alpha course. You don’t even need to go to church to participate. Meetings will take place in coffee shops, restaurants, fitness clubs, seniors’ homes and, in one case, even a tattoo parlor.

Angie LaFavor, a pastor at Beulah Alliance, one of Alberta 2013’s participating churches, says, “We want to help people have conversations about faith in the places where life is happening.” Copping’s honest prayer has led him into a relationship with Jesus and a deeper search about Him. He is now an Alpha group facilitator, excited about talking with others about faith and doubt. “I’m hoping to expand my own faith, and share with others how Jesus has opened my own eyes.” To connect to an Alpha course in Alberta, visit questioneverythingab.com.

Fitting In! grandchildren – not be burdened with doctor’s appointments and illness that can come with old age.” Anywhere from 15-30 people attend Lidman’s boot camps and 10-20 parents participate in a combination of cardio and strength training in Strollercize classes. Strollercize is a stroller exercise program where new moms and moms-to-be can workout with their babies. While many of her classes are held at fitness facilities, Wednesday and Friday classes are held at the WECA church gym. She says she hopes to change people’s perception of church. “Some people went to church when they were growing up and found church to be very regimented, strict and formal.” Lidman can relate to having certain preconceptions about church. When she was young, her parents took her to church at Easter and Christmas, but emphasized that valuing family and having good morals was more important than ‘religion.’ She believed in a higher power without understanding who God really was. With a business diploma in marketing and a degree in commerce, Lidman later secured a job at a Fortune 500 company. In September 1991, she was returning home to Edmonton from a business

For the past four years, fitness instructor Donna Lidman has energetically coached students through boot camps and Strollercize classes. “I think we’re becoming a very unfit society and I wanted to get people moving again,” says the mom of three girls. “For myself, my goal is to be strong and healthy when I’m 80 so I can play with my
trip when she was approached by John Jacobs, the American founder of Power Team, an organization that combines feats of strength (e.g. team members smash bricks with their bare hands) with a Christian message. Jacobs was flying to Edmonton for a Power Team event when he started a conversation with Lidman and asked

her two important questions. “He said, ‘If you died tomorrow, would you go to heaven?’ ” Lidman replied she would. When Jacobs asked why, Lidman responded that she was a good person. “I was raised to think that if I was a good person, I’d go to Heaven,” explains Lidman, “but that’s not the truth. “It made me realize that I don’t actually know who this Jesus guy is. I heard about Him, but I don’t know who He is.” While on the flight, Jacobs sat in the empty seat beside Lidman to continue the conversation. Jacobs explained it was through Jesus’ death on the cross
that Lidman can be forgiven, and the only way she can go to Heaven is by accepting Him into her life as her risen Lord and Saviour. He then invited her to the Power Team event, where she made the decision to follow Jesus. “I now know that Jesus is my strength, my Saviour and that I’m only who I am because of Him,” says Lidman, who later changed careers to devote more time for her family. “And I know with 100 per cent assurance of where I’ll go when I die because of that relationship.” In Christmas of that year, the words to the hymn “Amazing Grace” took a special meaning. “When I sang, ‘I once was blind, but now I see,’ I remember thinking how true it was,” says Lidman. “I really was blind to the awesome love that God has for me.” In her fitness classes, Lidman prays with students who ask for prayer and invites them to church events, such as marriage courses, cooking classes, and Bible studies. But she hopes her character will reflect her faith above everything else. “I want people to see that church can be a fun and welcoming place so they can be physically, mentally and spiritually fit,” she says. Caring through by Carolyn Tomlin They’ve been around for years, but today, coupons are used to make a difference in the lives of others. Instead of stocking your own pantry, think of ways to provide others with food, household products, half-priced restaurant meals and free products. Put these tips to work for you. Invite a group of friends and multiply the savings!
A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING
Clipping a large number of coupons can be a challenge unless you have an organized system. Some rely on plastic sheets inserted in a three-ring notebook with dividers. Others keep them in a shoebox with 4 x 6-inch index cards as dividers. Label each section clearly with a “Valid Until” date. That way you’re constantly aware of expiration dates. As you find coupons, file them the day you clip them and purge when needed. As you search though newspapers or
inserts, you have a choice of (1) clipping out all the coupons, (2) clipping only those you intend to use, or (3) keeping the insert intact and clipping only as needed. Find the method that works best for you.
WHERE TO LOOK
Once you start searching for coupons, you’ll find them in various places. Search newspapers, magazines, in-store, online, inserts, direct from the manufacturer, store mailings and on products. Use those attached to a product for a future purchase.
PACKED UP & READY TO MOVE
COMPASSION THROUGH COUPONS
We never know when or where a natural disaster will strike. Imagine being without water, basic food, diapers or baby food. If you have a backlog of coupons, you can be a shining light to those in need. Does your area have a relief organization that transports supplies to people affected by calamities? Is a truck available to deliver these products? Start saving coupons and do your part to serve others. When your community experiences a tornado, hurricane, flood or forest fire, you’ll be ready to help.
MAXIMIZE YOUR SAVINGS
Another way to maximize your coupon savings is to work together as a group. Does your community or church have a seniors’ club where you meet for lunch? Are you ever in need of a program? Ask members to bring their coupons and have an exchange. Think of these slips of paper as money. Don’t lose dollars and cents because you don’t use a certain product; share the coupon with others.
Shop at stores that double coupons and those that accept multiple coupons. Save more by matching coupons to weekly or seasonal sales. Use websites like couponmom.com and couponing-in-canada.com. It also pays to know the store policy on coupons.
Moving can be stressful – especially when you must decide on items to discard, donate or take with you. One item that is difficult to move is a freezer of food. Before the moving van pulls up at your door, contact a local shelter and make a donation of food purchased with your coupons. Another is cleaning supplies – a popular product for coupons. Even cleaning supplies that have been opened are usually accepted at shelters. These supplies can be invaluable to other homeowners. If you think that clipping coupons is a personal thing, consider the number of people who can benefit from your knowledge of saving money. Share your expertise with others. Support homeless
shelters. Give to families struggling to feed their children. Join together with other seniors to make a difference in the world.

‘Pay It Forward’ Originator Revealed
I
magine walking up to the cashier to pay for your coffee to learn somebody had paid for it already. As you’ve probably heard, 500 customers at a Tim Hortons in Edmonton were delighted when an anonymous young man decided to buy 500 large coffees for strangers in July. The bill came to $860. The cashier who rang up the unheard of purchase wondered how this man could down so much coffee. “The manager asked him if he was going to drink all those coffees or was he going to give it to someone?” Joanne Averion, a Tim Hortons store manager at the Edmonton store where it all started, told the Canadian Press. “He said, ‘You have to give it to the next 500 customers.’ ” The customers were happy to receive their free cup of Timmies, but were baffled after seeing the receipt. Why would this Good Samaritan shell out so much for people he didn’t even know? While this mystery man’s generosity is astounding, it wasn’t the last time it happened. Apparently, his random act of kindness has inspired a chain of events that’s spreading across the country. Other coffee philanthropists have since popped up to pay it forward in Alberta (Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer), Saskatchewan (Saskatoon), and Ontario (Ottawa, London, Oakville, and Huntsbury). “Clearly, this is someone who has a very pure heart and just wishes to put smiles on some people’s faces and spread some good cheer,” Tim Hortons spokesperson Michelle Robichaud told CTV. Maybe so far you’ve missed out on a free cup of coffee. But there’s a lot bigger gift waiting for you. Unlike Tim Hortons patrons who were prepared to pay for their own cup of coffee, no one can pay the debt owed for their sins and earn their way to Heaven. No religion, good works, self-sacrifice, or
adherence to moral laws will pay the bill. That’s why Jesus Christ paid it forward 2,000 years ago. The Bible says in Romans 3:23 that everyone has sinned and falls short of God’s standards. The Good News is that Jesus Christ, who never sinned, died on the cross and with His blood purchased people from every tribe and nation (Revelation 5:9). He did it for you. It may seem hard to fathom, but this publication is full of personal stories about people who have accepted Jesus’ sacrifice on their behalf. Now they want to pay it forward, as Jesus instructed in Matthew 10:8 “Freely you have
received, freely give.” God’s gift of salvation is paid for and free for the taking. Will you receive? If yes, pray the following prayer with all your heart: Dear Jesus, Thank you for the free gift of salvation. I believe that You gave Your life on the cross and rose again so I can be set free from my sin debt. Thank you for paying it forward that I may have eternal life with You. I receive Your grace and mercy and accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Help me to live everyday for You. In Your Name I pray, Amen

Food Fables
Fable 1: Skipping meals helps you lose weight.
Facts: It seems logical that omitting a meal means you’ll eat fewer calories that day. But it doesn’t work. Instead, your body goes into conservation mode, slowing your metabolism. Meal-skipping makes you hungrier too, so it’s easy to overeat at the next meal. Go with small, frequent meals to keep your body fuelled throughout the day.
Fable 2: Fat-free products are healthful and lower in calories.
Facts: Anytime fat is removed, something is added to replace the flavour. With extra sugar, flour or starchy thickeners, the fat-free version may actually contain more calories than the full-fat kind. Other flavour enhancers such as artificial sweeteners and chemical additives make the food less healthful, not more. The “fat-free” label may trick people into thinking they can eat more than a serving, further increasing calories.
Fable 7: “Multigrain” and “whole grain” mean the same thing.
Facts: Maybe, maybe not. Multigrain products contain several kinds of grains, but are not always whole grains. Healthful whole grain products are made with three parts of the grain kernel – bran, germ and endosperm – so they’re full of vitamins, minerals and fibre. Make sure the ingredient list says “whole grain.”
by Beth Bence Reinke, MS, RD
There are lots of food-related myths out there. Some actually seem sensible. Others have been repeated so often we think of them as true. Let’s set the record straight on these 10 food fables:
That’s because they’re picked and flash-frozen at the peak of ripeness, when nutrients are highest. Fresh produce trucked in from other provinces or countries is often picked before it’s fully ripe.
Fable 3: You only need to watch sodium if you have high blood pressure.
Facts: Most Canadians get twice as much sodium as their bodies need. That’s cause for concern, because too much sodium is linked to serious health problems like heart disease, kidney disease and stroke. Whether you have high blood pressure or not, cutting back on sodium is smart. Interestingly, the salt shaker is not the biggest offender. We get over three-fourths of our sodium from fast foods and processed foods, so limit those to shake the salt habit.
Fable 4: During pregnancy, you’re eating for two.
Facts: Yes, a pregnant mom needs extra calories to build a baby, but not double her normal requirement. Most moms-to-be need only 100 extra calories a day in the first trimester and 300 extra calories each day for the second and third trimesters.
Fable 5: Organic foods are more nutritious than conventionally-grown foods.
Fable 8: Taking a multivitamin will make up for a poor diet.
Facts: It will help a little, sure. But you’re better off eating whole foods, which contain substances such as antioxidants and fibre that a pill can’t replicate. Plus, scientists are just beginning to discover how compounds in real foods work together to promote health. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding though, a daily multivitamin with folic acid is essential.
Fable 9: All fats are bad for you.
Facts: Dietary fat is essential. Fat helps the body absorb fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E and K and helps you feel fuller longer. “Good” health-promoting fats are omega-3s, found mostly in fish and walnuts and unsaturated fats in oils and nuts. Saturated fats in meats and dairy are not as good and can contribute to heart disease. The worst fats for your health are trans or “hydrogenated” fats. Avoid them!
Facts: Most studies show little nutritional difference between the two. However, organic foods do provide two significant advantages: they’re not genetically modified and contain fewer pesticides. If your budget allows, buy organic for the “dirty dozen,” which contain high pesticide residues: apples, celery, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, hot peppers, imported nectarines, grapes, peaches, potatoes, strawberries, spinach and sweet bell peppers.
Fable 10: Eggs are bad for you.
Fable 6: Fresh veggies and fruits are more nutritious than canned or frozen.
Beth Bence Reinke, MS, RD, is a registered dietitian who writes about food, health and nutrition. She is the author of ‘Fruit Lovers’ Devotions To Go’ and several children’s books. Visit her website at www.bethbencereinke.com.
Facts: Believe it or not, frozen veggies may have more vitamins and minerals than some fresh produce.
Facts: Eggs have gotten a raw deal, blamed for our high cholesterol woes. Research shows that saturated fat and trans fat contribute more to elevated blood cholesterol than dietary cholesterol does. The truth is, eggs are nutritional gold mines! Yolks contain lutein and zeaxanthin, which promote eye health. They’re also an inexpensive source of protein, vitamins and minerals.

o, tightrope walker Nik Wallenda does not have a death wish. Nor is he aiming to give his mother a heart attack. It was Delilah Wallenda, in fact, who partly inspired her son to do what he does – because she does it, too. He just wants to simultaneously delight and excite crowds from his sky-high perch on a tightrope stretched over famous landmarks like the Niagara Falls. What’s so strange about that? “When I’m in the middle of a walk … my heart is in a whole different place,” he writes in his newly-released memoir, Balance: A Story of Faith, Family, and Life on the Line. “I see it as physical poetry. It’s an artistic expression. It’s uplifting. When I do these feats, my spirit soars.” Along with the blood pressure of the massive crowds watching below. Because they know the history: several members of Nik’s own family – the world-famous “Flying Wallendas” – have died from falling off the high wire, including family patriarch Karl Wallenda. And they remember, too. Many who watch Nik, a 34-year-old seventhgeneration performer, also watched his great-grandfather Karl fall to his death on live TV in 1978. It’s that bittersweet family heritage that inspires the Sarasota, Fla. native. “[Karl] really created the legacy and I really kind of live in the shadows of him,” Nik Wallenda told The 700 Club. “I wouldn’t be where I am if he didn’t pave that road.” And what a road – usually less than one inch wide – it’s been. Wallenda currently holds seven Guinness world records for various acrobatic feats such as hanging from a flying helicopter by his teeth and biking the highest and longest on the high wire. Last year, he became the first person ever to tightrope across Niagara Falls. And on June 23, 2013, in a live Discovery Channel special, 13 million breathless
viewers watched as Wallenda crossed the Little Colorado River Gorge at the Grand Canyon without a safety harness or net. It’s just another day at the office for the lifetime thrill-seeker. His mother, a famous aerialist herself, walked the tightrope when she was six months pregnant with her only son. At age two, Nik began practising on the twofeet-high tightrope in his family’s backyard. Soon, he was participating in his grandfather Alberto’s bareback horse act and working the crowds as a clown with his own dog show – all while in elementary school. By 13, the young aerialist made his professional tightrope-walking debut. Circus crowds and revenue, however, were shrinking, making him consider a career in pediatrics. But he changed his mind at 19 when he walked in a re-creation of the infamous seven-person pyramid that, in 1962, had killed two relatives and paralyzed an uncle. “As I came down from the wire afterward, the dream I had tried so hard to abandon was ignited again within me,” he told Guideposts. “I knew my family had a special gift … but I knew in my heart that the only way to honour it was to use it. Even if it was difficult, even if it was dangerous. Danger was real, but fear was a choice. I would choose faith instead – after all, that was a part of my family legacy too.” Fortunately, when he married Erendira Vasquez, she understood. After all, she was circus royalty herself. As they added sons Yanni and Amadeos and daughter Evita to the mix, Nik and Erendira repeated their childhoods by hitting the road. Today, the quintet travels up to 48 weeks a year, usually surrounded by extended family. Delilah and Nik’s sister Lijana often tightrope with the couple, while Nik’s father Terry, a 35-year veteran skywalker, handles all the rigging and mechanical aspects. Two
uncles, both engineers, assist. In 2001, Wallenda included his family as he set his first world record with an eight-person, tight-roped pyramid. From there, he phoned the Today Show hosts from a high wire more than 13 stories above ground, tight-roped more than 2,000 feet over a Caribbean Ocean section filled with sharks and piranhas and successfully recreated the Puerto Rican walk where Karl died. None of those stunts, however, rivalled his Niagara Falls and Grand Canyon walks. After two years of political wrangling, Wallenda eagerly flashed his passport as he crossed the Canadian border … on a tightrope. The magnitude of his accomplishment had him singing someone else’s praises, however, and not his own. “This walk is a celebration, an acknowledgement that the indomitable spirit of Karl Wallenda is alive and that you, Father God, are the Living Word directing my path,” he writes. “You, Father God, are worthy of all praise, all devotion, all energy.” With a microphone catching his every syllable, his Grand Canyon walk was no different. In the Discovery Channel’s most social night, nearly 40,000 tweets a minute noted Wallenda’s mid-walk conversations with broadcasters and his father, but most importantly, his Saviour. “Thank you, Lord,” he prayed as winds whipped around him. “Thank you for calming that cable, God.” Raised in a devout Christian home, Wallenda began a relationship with Jesus as a small child. And today, as he plans his next thrill – tightrope-walking between two Big Apple skyscrapers, like the Chrysler and Empire State buildings – he leans more heavily on the God whose “perfect love casts out fear” (1 John 4:18) than he does his meticulous preparation and training. “I need to remember that, with or without spectacular achievement, the loving arms of Jesus are always open to me,” he writes in Balance. “Yes, I have a job to do. And yes, the aim of that job is to thrill people by performing seemingly impossible feats. But, in realizing those feats, if I fail to reflect the glory of God I have accomplished nothing.”

change his life. In college, after a teammate witnessed to him about the saving grace of Jesus Christ, Kitna’s life changed. He got down on his knees and surrendered his life to God. “There’s no way I would have gotten to the NFL without becoming a Christian,” Kitna tells Living Light News. “I was on the road to destruction. A lot of people want to hear how hard I’ve worked. That’s part of it. But without God’s provisions, the road I’ve travelled doesn’t happen. I laugh at people wanting to give me credit.” In 2011, his last season in the NFL, Kitna was on the DL with an injured back. Hearing there was a coaching/teaching job open at his old high school, he flew home from Dallas for an interview. When Kitna got the job, he asked for the “toughest students you’ve got.” “His impact is going to be outsized by another teacher just walking into the building because of his life experience of playing in the NFL,” says Pat Erwin, Lincoln’s principal. “Also, he’s going to have an impact because of who he is and how he is.” When Kitna first became a Christian, he was courageous in his faith, sharing the Good News and his testimony. Many of his
Kitna asked for “the toughest students you’ve got.” drinking buddies started to come to his Bible study. Now, the father of four speaks at churches across America. He encourages believers to be intense and committed. “This is who I am,” Kitna tells a male audience at a church service in Tacoma. “My future is secure. My past is forgiven. I no longer need popularity, acclaim, fame. I walk by faith and I’m uplifted by prayer. My faith is steadfast. My goal is heaven. My mission is clear. I will not hesitate in the presence of the enemy. I will not give up, shut up or let up. I’m going to be prayed up, preached up. I’m a disciple of Christ.”
Kitna’s message was to inspire discipleship and to encourage commitment, to follow Jesus no matter what everyone else is doing. “I want to encourage you, we are in a battle. That’s the storyline,” Kitna tells the men. “God or the devil? You’re going to have to choose what side you’re going to be on. I like to win. “Hopefully you’ll want to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour and move from losing to winning. Immediately.” Kitna’s advice is simple. Don’t be a covert Christian. Be an overt Christian. “You need to look different. Old has gone,” Kitna says, paraphrasing Scripture. “There should be something different about you. Fix your eyes on Jesus. Get rid of those sins. Take your sins and leave them at the cross.” When Kitna left the NFL after making over $20 million – he made $3.2 million in his last season with the Cowboys – he didn’t need to get a job. But he’s not chasing the dollar; he’s trying to change lives. Besides his impact on the football field and in the classroom, Kitna has a weekly Bible study that’s well attended by his players. It’s about influencing and shaping lives. “This,” Kitna says, “is my dream job.”

As a former NFL quarterback, there were so many other places Jon Kitna could have been. Behind a TV camera, doing sports talk. On the golf course, swinging for fun. But not here. Not in a classroom, teaching math. Yet one month after playing quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, one month after saying hi to Tony Romo at practice, Kitna was teaching and coaching in the high school he graduated from – Tacoma’s Lincoln High School. “I am called to help young men and women have better opportunities in life,” says the 40-year-old. “Yes, it would have been easier to have gone into NFL coaching, college coaching or doing TV or radio. But I felt that this was going to give me the greatest amount of impact on others.” Actually, Kitna never figured he’d play in the NFL. Certainly not for 15 years, playing for Seattle, Cincinnati, Detroit and Dallas, throwing for nearly 30,000 yards. “I always figured I’d be a teacher, while the NFL was always a dream, a very long-shot dream,” says the 6-2 retired QB. “But my wife and I always dreamed of teaching and coaching in a high school in an inner city.” In March 1996, Kitna was doing his student teaching in Yakima, a city two hours southeast of Seattle, when Seattle Seahawks’ then-coach Dennis Erickson watched Kitna in a personal tryout. Erickson’s nephew was Kitna’s wide receiver at Central Washington University and he convinced Erickson to give Kitna a look. To Kitna’s surprise, Erickson signed him. “I went to college and I thought I’d be an accountant,” says Kitna, who’s now an algebra teacher and head football coach at Lincoln. “They make lots of money. I took one class and I said I can’t see myself doing this. I need to be around people. I was good at math and that’s why I chose a teaching degree.” But before Kitna would get that chance at the NFL, before he’d be named the 2003 NFL Comeback Player of the Year and before he’d throw 169 touchdown passes, he needed to
From NFL QB to high school math teacher? From Jon Kitna’s perspective, it all adds up.

by Elisabeth Handley Queen revolutionized the world of rock music, and there’s scarcely a rocker as iconic as the band’s flamboyant lead singer, the late Freddie Mercury. In 2011, Canadian singer Marc Martel heard about a talent search that offered musicians the opportunity to be part of “The Queen Extravaganza,” a touring tribute band. His audition video exploded with over seven million views on YouTube, earning him guest appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and American Idol. Within a whirlwind few months, Martel was touring the world as one of the lead singers of the tribute band. While he never figured his new gig would extend beyond its original three-month tour, Martel has now been making his Mercury-worthy stage entrance – suspended on a cable with a grand piano – for nearly a year and a half. “To perform Roger Taylor’s music in front of him was almost an outof-body experience,” says Martel. (Taylor is the original drummer of Queen and creator of The Queen Extravaganza.) “It’s really a blast to get on stage and perform music your audience really loves and sings to.” In the last 12 years Martel earned his stripes as lead singer for the Christian rock band Downhere. “Being part of Downhere was definitely a calling,” he says. “I think
now I’m into a different chapter of my calling.” Music is definitely a calling for the 36-year-old. Gifted with an incredible vocal range, he took piano lessons for eight years and spent hours teaching himself how to play a guitar. His father is a pastor and his mom is a choir director. Growing up, he was encouraged by both parents to perform and was given a free stage to do so.
“The whole thing is surreal.” Though raised by Christian parents, Martel realized in his teens that his belief in Jesus Christ was not his parents’ but his own, and chose to make Him the centre of his life. “Growing up in Quebec, less than one per cent of the population is evangelical Christian. I always enjoyed being a little different from everyone and standing up for my faith. People know where I stand.” In the transition to secular music, Martel’s faith is still prominent. “This is where the rubber meets the road,” he tells Living Light News. “My behaviour and how Christ affects my everyday life and decisions is on stage now.” Filling the shoes of the openly gay rock star may seem unusual for a Christian, but Martel has found

Living Light News - September/October 2013 DARA MACLEAN Wanted daramaclean.com Review by Matt Conner Two years ago Dara Maclean broke out with a surprising debut, You Got My Attention, which lived up to its title. With wide-ranging appeal, Maclean moved effortlessly between genres – from tender ballads to up-tempo anthems to worshipful choruses. Rather than settle in a single category, Maclean continues to showcase such diversity on her latest release, Wanted. The title track kicks off the 12-song collection as a memorable single that sing of God’s heart for humanity. Maclean’s confident vocal delivery pushes lines like, “You are wanted/You have been marked/You’re set apart/And He calls you His/So you don’t have to search/Don’t have to look for where you belong.” Maclean’s style is direct, and Scriptural refrains is where she shines. It only takes a few tracks to realize just how diverse Wanted is. “Our Only Hope” could easily fit within any contemporary worship service with its memorable refrain and declaration. “Set My People Free” follows with some thunderous percussion. “Love Is” establishes a mild R&B/pop groove early and rides it through to the end. From the gospel-tinged “Blameless” to the soft strings on “Made,” Dara Maclean’s new album displays her many musical sides. The entire album is an uplifting collection, and music fans of any stripe should find something to like here. DEREK WEBB I Was Wrong, I’m Sorry & I Love You derekwebb.com Review by Josh McConnell It’s been 10 years since Derek Webb released his first solo effort, She Must and Shall Go Free. The album was released after spending a decade with popular Christian band Caedmon’s Call and it featured lyrics that forced believers to re-evaluate the church and Christian culture. Now Webb feels he needed to release a ‘sequel’ to that record by trying to mend his relationship with the church. Lyrically, Webb is thought provoking, honest and isn’t repetitive or trite, which allows him to produce songs that feel like a conversation. Webb does not disappoint musically either. The songs are brilliant, enjoyable and drip with talent. Tracks such as “Eye of the Hurricane” show the upbeat side of Webb, while still being driven by his acoustic guitar. Other songs, such as alt-rock inspired “Lover Part 3,” invite listeners with a more relaxed rhythm. If you enjoy laidback pop music or simply want to try something different, then I Was Wrong, I’m Sorry & I Love You is for you. FOR KING AND COUNTRY Hope Is What We Crave (Live) forkingandcountry.com Review by Lindsay Williams Recorded on the final night of their first headlining tour in Nashville, Tenn., in November of 2012, Hope Is What We Crave / LIVE highlights For King & Country’s sweet spot: the live performance. Brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone showcase their world-

JukeBox class musicianship on their debut live recording, giving fans a front row seat to their frenetic energy and tangible stage presence. The audio portion of the CD/DVD features nine cuts that include live audience interaction and commentary from the duo, detailing some of the stories behind the songs. “Fine Fine Life” kicks off the concert set with spirit, while crowdpleaser “Light It Up” follows with exuberant fervour. A hit parade keeps up the pace, with the band serving up sprightly versions of their radio singles, playing off the audience’s energy. The acoustic version of often-overlooked highlight “Missing” stands out with its aching vocals amidst the line of fan favourites, paired with the beautiful, stripped down melody. Moreover, the band debuts a new Christmas song with “Baby Boy.” Smash single “The Proof of Your Love” closes the set with the kind of exuberance you would expect from a band known for its live shows. The DVD portion of this package contains the live concert, alongside bonus content, acoustic performances and the official music video for “Proof of Your Love,” whetting the appetites of fans for the band’s highly-anticipated sophomore studio album. MANDISA Overcomer mandisaofficial.com Review by Josh McConnell Time flies when you’re having fun, as the saying goes. It’s hard to believe that it’s been seven years since Mandisa appeared on American Idol and finished ninth. Subsequently, Mandisa signed with Sparrow Records, forged a successful recording career, and this year The Hollywood Reporter named her as one of the Top 5 Idol finalists with the most Billboard chart toppers. Titled Overcomer, the three-time Grammy nominee’s fourth studio album is a collection of songs that elevates both the mood and spirit. The title track is an anthem and battle cry that Mandisa dedicates to listeners. It’s a message that resonates with her audience. Shortly after release, the song hit No. 1 on the iTunes Christian Singles Chart and on Billboard’s AC Indicator. Mandisa’s powerhouse voice, evident on American Idol and in live performances, is showcased in this collection. From the piano ballad “Where You Begin” to the thumping “Joy Unspeakable” and gospel pop “At All Times,” Mandisa’s versatile voice propels the music forward and continues a musical trend that many have grown to love. PHIL WICKHAM The Ascension philwickham.com Review by Lindsay Williams Phil Wickham’s beautiful artistry shines through on his latest full-length project, The Ascension. Based on Psalms 120-134, the “Songs of Ascent,” this collection wonderfully captures the anticipation of, and the yearning for, the presence of Jesus Christ. The 11-track journey is filled with equal parts celebration and adoration. Tracks like lead single “This Is Amazing Grace,” “Holy Light,” “Over All” and “Glory” radiate joy, ushering in hope on the wings of swelling, experimental melodies. Wickham’s music is like a trip through an art gallery, each song its own poignant masterpiece. His lyrics read like illustrative poems set to music, and his aching vocals add a sense of earnest longing, connecting with our soul’s deepest hopes and fears. “Carry My Soul” reveals his impeccable
17
lyricism, creating vivid word pictures with romantic lines like, “I want to feel Your love like sunshine on my resurrected skin.” He paints pictures of grace with acute attention to detail. The jubilant, Americana-tinged “Tears of Joy” carry listeners into the arms of Jesus with the line: “Let my last breath here be my first with You.” The theme of life-giving truth continues on the reverent hymn-like gem “When My Heart Is Torn Asunder” with this lyric: “My body might be dying, but I’ll always be alive.” Wickham’s raw talent is especially evident on the stripped down “Mercy” and picturesque closer “Thirst.” The Ascension is a work of art to be treasured for years to come. SEABIRD Troubled Days facebook.com/seabird Review by Matt Connor The Morgan brothers, Aaron and Ryan, are now independent musicians after several years on a major label. Together as the core members of Seabird, they’ve weathered several industry storms related to release dates, musical freedom and the like. Now those Troubled Days are behind them, although the experiences serve as the title to their latest album. The band remains true to their piano pop roots for most of Troubled Days. “Love Will Be Enough” is a strong mid-tempo opener that blossoms into an arena-worthy choral build. The confident refrain echoes Aaron Morgan’s hopeful lyrics that love does, indeed, win in the end. The same hopeful thread weaves through yearning rock track “Find A Way”, one of the finer moments on Troubled Days. Despite the musical frustrations beyond their control, the Morgans have clearly learned that they must keep the faith while also relying on their fans and family to persevere. Such lessons appear on “Pull You In” and “Golden Skies”. The latter would make an ideal radio single. Yet the real highlight on Troubled Days is also the most left-ofcentre. The gospel stomp of “Stand Out” shines with traditional Americana instrumentation as a rousing sing-along. As Aaron sings, “We gotta stand out from the rest,” the band does just that as they spread their wings and heed their own words. While they’re clearly the Seabird fans know and love, it’s also apparent the band has some different steps to take with their newfound freedom. WE AS HUMAN We As Human weashuman.com Review by Josh McConnell It is no coincidence that We As Human is compared to the band Skillet, or at least the earlier version of the popular band. We As Human was discovered by Skillet’s frontman John Cooper in 2011, toured with the band and signed to the same major label (Atlantic Records). Perhaps Cooper sees a little bit of his younger self in the band? With their self-titled debut recently hitting store shelves, the comparisons cannot be avoided. Musically, the music is hard-hitting, alternative rock reminiscent of old school Skillet, Pillar, Spoken, 12 Stones. Most of the album’s 10 songs are heavy, though “We Fall Apart,” “Take My Bullets Away” and “Taking Life” offer a threesong lighter stint in the middle. Skillet’s John Cooper and Lacey Sturm (formally of Flyleaf) also make guest appearances to break up the mix. Although there’s little that differentiates them from others in the genre, the album sounds good and the music is fun. If you enjoy your music aggressive, give them a spin.

MOMS RAISING SONS TO BE MEN
OPEN
When Phil Callaway’s new book arrived, it looked like a storybook. When You Need A Good Laugh: Finding Contagious Joy is just that – 48 pages filled with stories, one-liners, corny jokes and heartwarming tales. In his fresh, upbeat, winning way, Callaway shares five secrets to restoring your joy. He addresses how to ambush “joy suckers” in life – bitterness, fear and worry. Reminders to take life lightly with laughter are mixed with reminders that although life can be very difficult at times, you are not alone. He explores topics such as celebrating relationships, seeing the bright side in dark times and leaving a legacy by the way you live. To keep you smiling, there are feature pages with funny quotes, beautiful words from the Bible and stunning black and white photography. Callaway shares his own personal experiences as he talks about his wife, children and friends. He talks about his best friend who, at the time of writing, was dying of bone cancer. He poignantly shares his grief and his admiration at Lauren’s positive outlook during his final days. This book is much more than a coffee table adornment. Although it is a light easy read, it is a book you can pick up any time and read a page or two and find comfort and a smile.
Rhonda Stoppe has ministered to youth and women for over 20 years. She is a pastor’s wife and mother to four grown children. In Moms Raising Sons to Be Men, Stoppe shares her Biblical and practical wisdom with mothers at all stages of parenting. In the first part of the book, “Life Lessons From Moms of the Bible,” Stoppe encourages mothers to learn from both the good and bad examples of mothers in Scripture and to live by the Biblical principles they want their sons to learn. She challenges mothers to consider their significant impact in how their sons learn to relate to others, to God, and how they see themselves. The second part of the book examines seven key principles that set the foundation for guiding a son toward godly manhood. Stoppe is straightforward and honest in sharing her personal experiences and the insights she has gained as a mother. She makes clear the importance of becoming obedient to God’s Word and learning that, for Christians, the purpose of life is to glorify God, not oneself or the world. Each chapter ends with a few questions that challenge the reader to apply what they’ve read to their own life. This book will encourage and strengthen any mother’s resolve in raising sons to be strong men of God.
When temptation lurks around every corner, people need accountability. It prevents destructive decisions that could derail your family, marriage, or business. Craig Gross has recognized this need and in his book, Open, he shares with the reader why accountability is necessary, what it requires, and how to accomplish it. Gross, a pastor and speaker who founded XXXchurch.com in 2002 for people struggling with pornography, opens up to the reader to help them find freedom, peace, and self-confidence. The first chapter lays a solid foundation on the importance of accountability and why it’s a key factor in overcoming temptations. In the second part of the book, Gross highlights the importance of community and points out that life was not meant to be lived alone. For accountability to be effective, honesty and courage must be added to the equation. The last part of the book shows readers the formula to put accountability into action. Gross does an excellent job of showing readers how crucial it is to be accountable and to safeguard one’s self from what ultimately destroys. The book not only talks about the concept, but also offers a practical guide and lessons on how to put accountability into practice.
Cold-Case Christianity seems like an odd title for a book about Apologetics (the defense of the Christian faith). But in the subtitle, a prospective reader may get an initial indication that this is no ordinary book about Jesus and the Gospels. This is a true “crime detective” investigation and a compelling read for the person who loves crime novels. But this is no novel. J. Warner Wallace is a real crime detective with many years of successful investigative work under his belt. He transfers those skills and training to the Biblical account of Jesus Christ and demonstrates how, by deductive research and reasoning, one may move from mental assent to personal belief and trust in the Jesus Christ revealed in the Bible. There are two sections to the book: the first “Learn to Be a Detective” where he describes and outlines 10 important principles that every aspiring detective needs to master, followed by 10 intriguing chapters, with great titles like “Don’t Be a Know-it-All.” Section 2 is the real meat of the matter. These four chapters present the evidentiary proof necessary to arrive at a conclusion regarding belief in Jesus Christ. In this reviewer’s opinion, this is arguably an excellent book, and well worth reading.

Relationships
Align Expectations with Reality
by Dr. Gary Smalley One of the biggest energy draining experiences most adults stumble through is a strained marriage. I think back over the number of times Norma and I have been bent out of shape. It’s amazing how the tone of our relationship could get so dark so fast. One hour, things would be great, and then instantly we’d be locked in an angry argument over some earth-shaking situation like, “Oh, no, you didn’t say that! You said you wanted to stop and eat there, so my mouth has been watering

s Dr. Gary Smalley to taste their specialty. How dare you change your mind!” We were in our camper driving out of Prescott, Ariz. one morning.
I wanted breakfast at this certain restaurant where Norma had agreed to stop, but as we got close, she remembered this other place and asked if we could eat there instead. We quickly found ourselves locked in a three-hour battle, and all kinds of things came out that had nothing to do with eating breakfast. In the middle of this type of crisis, my personality tends to see only the negatives. But Norma tends to put things more realistically. I remember her saying, “Just look at all the things that go great between us, and this is the one speck in all our years of marriage.” That knack of

pulling our expectations and reality closer together gives me more energy to continue the discussion. No couple can live each day without some disagreements or even major conflicts. If a couple can’t work things out for a few days, that’s okay. So I had to develop new expectations, ones that were more pragmatic. Driving down the highway, we both evaluated our marriage and began making a list of things we expected to receive and what we believed would be acceptable for a mutually-satisfying relationship. It is amazing how just talking and agreeing on those marital basics

has increased our levels of love for life and each other. Are you willing to share your expectations with your spouse? Are you open to listening and relearning new, more pragmatic expectations for each other? It’s the gap between what we expect and what we get that drains our energy. When our experience is close to what we anticipated, we’re stronger and more content. God does have an expectation for your marriage relationship. It’s called “forever-love” or as we see it described in the Bible - agape - or unconditional, accepting love. Read 1 Corinthians 13 to find out
more about this love. As Christians begin to understand God’s expectation for their marriage, His Spirit will reveal and convict them of areas that require change. Remember, you cannot change your spouse. But God gives you the power to change. God also works in the lives of others in ways you cannot, to grow and change them. Getaways
Water World by Lori Sandys Lapierre Ah, Venice... Just the name brings to mind images of decadent food, romance and, of course, a gondola ride on the city’s intricate water pathways. But Venice is not just for lovers. Whether you’re single or travelling with the kids, Venice offers a full array of activities and interests. Located in northeastern Italy, Venice is comprised of 118 small islands, separated by 150 canals and linked by 400 bridges. You can walk the entire city in about an hour on foot – cars, bikes, skateboards and rollerblades are not allowed – but you can also ride the waterbuses for an authentic Venetian experience. A travel pass offers unlimited water and land travel within a specific timeframe on the public transport system. Just don’t forget the requisite gondola ride! Visit the Piazza San Marco to see three of Venice’s great attractions in one square: St. Mark’s Basilica (Basilica di San Marco), the Byzantine architectural masterpiece that dates back to 832 A.D.; Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), a Gothic castle that was once the hub of Venetian politics and justice; and St. Mark’s Clock Tower (Torre dell’Orologio), a 15th
century clock tower that displays the time, moon phases and the sun’s movement. Art lovers can visit the Accademia Galleries (Gallerie dell’Accademia), where Italian masters’ obra maestra dating to the 14th century are displayed in 24 rooms housed in three buildings. The Ca’Rezzonico holds Venice’s largest cache of works from the 18th century art, but the Venetian Baroque palace is a work of art itself with three floors of paintings, sculpture, and luxurious furnishings. Doge’s Palace showcases gilded ceilings, frescoed walls and intricately carved statues and friezes. On that same square, museum-goers can visit the Museo Correr, which houses classical antiquities, paintings, drawings, copper plates, coins and seals that show Venice’s civic heritage. Save time and money by purchasing a pass in advance. A Museum Pass gives you a single admission to 11 museums and is good for six months. The St. Mark’s Square Pass grants admission to all four St. Mark’s Square museums and is valid for three months. If you’re going to Venice for the fabulous food, you’ll find pizza, pasta and gelato available at almost every corner. For buffet lovers, check out Taverna del Campiello Remer.
Overlooking the Grand Canal, this hidden gem offers an all-you-can-eat spread twice a day, beverage and live music included. Arte della Pizza is an extremely popular hole-in-the-wall where you can enjoy authentic Italian pizza for only six euros. The Rosticceria San Bartolomeo offers up cafeteria fare that can be enjoyed on-site or taken to go. Or opt for a classy dinner at Hostaria Da Franz. This celebrity-frequented seafood restaurant is also known for the finest tiramisu in Italy. Accommodations can range from the opulent and costly (Hotel Danieli or the Hotel Excelsior Venice, for instance) to the inexpensive and convenient, such as the Albergo San Samuele that’s surrounded by art galleries. Or snag one of 10 spacious rooms at the Al Ponte Mocenigo; just make sure to book ahead. If you’re travelling light, numerous hostels are also available. There are shopping runs to all tastes and budgets. Visit Calle Larga XXII Marzo for Italian designers like Armani, Prada and Valentino. A trio of streets that offers everything from Versace to kitschy, the Mercerie has been the main Venice shopping street since the Middle Ages. Frezzeria offers a similar grab bag of goods but without the crowds.
Festivals dot Venice’s calendar each year, ranging from the International Architecture Exhibition, which showcases architecture and art, to the contemporary Venice Film Festival and the historical Carnevale, a 10-day festival hailed as the world’s most famous masked ball. Flights from Western Canada to Venice take approximately 10 hours, and travellers should be aware that they lose a day upon arrival. But it’ll definitely be worth it.
