eter, you’re the luckiest guy in the world.” The billionaire’s statement surprised Peter Grandich. The man before him was one of America’s wealthiest. Grandich was a dropout driving a Chevy. The billionaire knew everything about finance but not his daughter’s favourite colour. Money had not bought him a relationship with his child. The men were planets apart. Yet Grandich was also beginning to know the thrill of monetary chase. His journey began on the streets of New York City. Grandich’s father was an often-fired chauffeur. When not working, he was gambling, leaving his family “living on the edge of lack.”

“There was little money and less love,” Grandich, 55, writes in his book. At 17, Grandich left school, working deadend jobs. To escape monotony, he dove bell-bottomed-feet first into disco. “I lived for Friday and Saturday nights and disco,” he writes. “[My friends and I] valued our lives based on the amount of gold hanging around our necks ... we judged the girls by the amount of makeup they wore.” Flings with “countless women” left Grandich unfulfilled. When the Travolta-admirer met Mary in 1979, he axed his partying. “She was totally different than any woman I ever knew,” he says. continued on page 2

ven casual fans know the stereotypes: NBA megastars come from colleges like Duke, not Ivy League schools that don’t offer athletic scholarships. They get drafted immediately after graduation, if not before. They don’t find stardom through the Development League (the minor league system). They get plenty of fan-andfloor exposure before posting monster stats. How, then, does one explain overnight New York Knicks sensation Jeremy Lin? The 23-year-old point guard rose from
D-League obscurity to become the first-ever NBA player to notch at least 20 points and seven assists in each of his first five starts. His 109 points as a starter came in only four contests – the most by a rookie NBA starter in 35 years. While leading New York to a seven-game win streak, Lin even outdueled legendary Laker Kobe Bryant on Feb. 10, with 38 points over Bryant’s 34. For his impressive beginning, the Palo Alto, Calif. native was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week on Feb. 13, becoming the first to win that award in both NBA and D-League. Sales in the Knicks’ online store have rocketed more than 3,000 percent since Lin’s debut. “Linsanity” has launched. Not bad for an undrafted, unknown Harvard graduate who drifted from team to
team by day and couch to couch by night in January. Knicks’ head coach Mike D’Antoni isn’t sure how it happened. “I don’t know what to tell you,” he said. “I have never seen this. It’s not often that a guy is going to play [this many] games, the best you are going to see, and nobody knows who he is.” Yet Lin’s former Warriors teammate Stephen Curry isn’t surprised. “I know he’s a humble guy who works hard every day whether he’s playing 40 minutes or four minutes,” he told Mercury News. Born in L.A. to Taiwanese immigrants, Lin led his high school team to a state championship and was named 2006 California Player of the Year. He looked for scholarships to basketball powerhouses like UCLA but came up empty-handed. continued on page 2 continued on page 2

Those differences involved a religious family. Grandich became Catholic to please his father-in-law, marrying Mary in 1981. The newlyweds went home with a $25,000 dowry. Soon after, Grandich toured the New York Stock Exchange. Hooked, he researched the stock market at the public library. After meeting a broker, he decided to take $7,000 of Mary’s dowry and invest it by trading options. Within a year, the account had grown to $100,000, and Grandich thought he was set. By age 26, though, that account was depleted from a doomed pennystock venture. It taught him a lesson: even when investors lose, brokers win. He started an investors club, earned his stockbroker’s license, and Peter Grandich landed a position at a NYSE-member firm. He hated cold-calling clients, so he began a newsletter, The Grandich Letter, in 1984. It was his actions in 1987, however, that vaulted Grandich into the national eye. Something felt wrong in August. He felt Wall Street was poised to crash and advised clients and newsletter recipients to get out. On Oct. 19, 1987, his words seemed prophetic when the
Dow Jones plummeted 508 points. The 22 percent singleday drop was the largest recorded. The day after “Black Monday” he issued another prediction: the market recover, and would reach a record high within two years. It did, cementing Grandich among legends and providing nickname “The Wall Street Whiz Kid.” “[There] was no way I was ‘qualified’ to make this call … That’s how I know it was God,” he writes in Confessions of a Wall Street Whiz Kid. “At my level of ability and knowledge, dumb luck would allow me to get one of those predictions correct. But to get both of them right?” Grandich’s star power skyrocketed. He became obsessed with mega-wealth and was a “legend in [his] own mind.” He appeared on Good Morning America, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and more. New clients were “an almost everyday occurrence.” Grandich admits to Living Light News he “was the self-proclaimed chairman and CEO of the Me, Myself, and I society.” Grandich was practicing what he dubbed “Godfather Catholicism.” “I was going to church when it suited me, donating lots of money — mostly for show,” he writes. As the dot-com craze took hold, Grandich became anxious, depressed, and had panic attacks. After his second suicide attempt, police took him to a psychiatric ward where he met a homeless man. Grandich gave him $18 – everything in his pockets. The man wept
like it was a million dollars. “At that moment, even though I was so deeply depressed and suicidal, I could see the differences in his life and mine,” Grandich writes. “I could no longer just sit at home wallowing in my fear and agony.” He watched a video featuring pastor S.M. Lockridge, who described Jesus, saying repeatedly, “That’s my King!” For Grandich, a switch flipped. He cried out to God, surrendering everything – including finances. “I ... felt as if the Holy Spirit went through my whole body,” he writes. Because of this experience, along with Christian friends, medicine, and reading the Bible, he emerged from his funk. “I had a real, true, purely personal relationship with Jesus … True peace for me came only when I totally surrendered to Jesus.” He began reshaping his life, including downsizing from a 5,000-square-foot home on six acres to a modest condo. Grandich wrote his book after friends suggested it. National Post columnist Jonathan Chevreau writes, “[Grandich’s] insights into the flawed nature of financial planning and the false god of Retirement are alone worth the cover price. The ultimate treasure, he eloquently reminds us, lies not on earth … but in the world that awaits us all.” Knowing money can’t help life’s problems, Grandich directs others to Who can. “There is only one answer to life’s problems, anxiety, and discontent,” he writes. “Jesus. He is never the wrong answer.” To order ‘Confessions of a Wall Street Whiz Kid,’ visit createspace.com.

So when Harvard offered Lin and his 4.2 GPA a spot on their no-scholarship basketball squad, he took it. At 6-3 and 200 pounds, he graduated as the first player in Ivy League history to record at least 1,450 points, 450 rebounds, 400 assists, and 200 steals. Lin entered the 2010 NBA Draft and no one called. He managed to play well in Summer League games, however, garnering a partially-guaranteed two-year contract with the Golden State Warriors. When Lin stepped onto the floor on Oct. 8, 2010, he became the first American NBA player of either Chinese or Taiwanese descent (his Chinese parents initially immigrated to Taiwan), as well as the first Harvard alumni to play professionally since 1954, one of only three ever to do so. Lin played 29 games his first season, thrice getting sent down to the Reno Bighorns, Warriors’ D-League affiliate, and getting recalled just as many times. Yet he never anticipated getting axed from the roster the first day of 2011 training camp. “It was really tough for me at the time, but I just tried to hold onto a lot of the stuff in the Bible that God gives, to have joy in the sufferings and trust in His perfect plan,” Lin said in an interview with 95.7 The Game. “That’s what I tried my best to do, and I’m thankful the way things turned out.” So are the Knicks. Though the Houston Rockets claimed Lin off waivers two days after the Warriors released him, they kept himTim onlyTebow 12 days, letting him go on Christmas Eve.
Lin was crushed and wondered whether he should take a break from basketball. Instead, he turned to a lifelong source of wisdom: the Bible. Lin gave his life to Jesus Christ in high school and was active in Harvard’s Asian-American Christian Fellowship. “[College is] when I began to learn what it means to play for the glory of God. My parents had often … told me I should play for God’s glory, but I never understood quite what that meant,” he told Patheos. “That was something that really boggled my mind … I thought, ‘I want to do well for myself and for my team. How can I possibly give that up and play selflessly for God?’ ” Through studying the Bible and praying, Lin learned what integrating his faith into his game looked like. “I started learning how to … put more of an emphasis on my attitude and the way that I play, rather than my stats or whether we win a championship,” he said. “I learned more about … being humble, putting others above yourself, being respectful to refs and opponents. There are really so many ways you can apply your faith to basketball.” The media puts him alongside NFL sensation Tim Tebow.

“I think the things he says in interviews, his approach to the game is just unbelievable, and I respect him so much,” says Lin, aware of comparisons. “I want to be able to do some of the things he does in terms of the … way he impacts people off the field. I think that is what is most inspiring about him.” Like the quarterback, Lin looks for opportunities to apply his faith to the game – like when the Knicks signed him on Dec. 27, only to boot him to the D-League again. After a triple-double, he rejoined the Knicks’ roster, and on Feb. 4, scored 25 points in a breakout performance against the New Jersey Nets. Tebowing has become Linsantiy and New York now sits in second place behind the Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference’s Atlantic Division, having won 11 of 21 games since Lin debuted. Lin once crashed on couches. He now has an apartment and guaranteed contract in New York. He’s on the cover of Time and Sports Illustrated - two weeks in a row, not to mention the lips of every fan. But his ultimate game plan isn’t about offense. “I’m thinking about how can I trust God more,” Lin told Mercury News . “How can I surrender more? How can I bring Him more glory?” Knicks fans can’t wait to find out.

Living Light News - March/April 2012
Newsbriefs Finalist sports character and faith TORONTO, ON — On March 2, the winner of the coveted CFL Coach of the Year will be announced, though sports pundits say they know who it’ll be. This year’s finalists for the Annis Stukus Trophy are B.C. Lions’ Wally Buono, Edmonton Eskimos’ Kavis Reed, and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ Paul LaPolice. Recently retired to focus on GM duties, Buono holds the title of CFL’s all-time winningest coach, with most coaching wins (254) and most first place finishes (13). The 62-year-old also completed one of his best seasons, leading the Lions from a dismal 0-5 start to a scintillating Grey Cup win – on home turf nonetheless. “I’m happy that I’m being looked at with the next wave of good head coaches,” Buono told the Canadian Press. “When you look at Paul LaPolice and
… Kavis Reed in Edmonton, these are the good, young coaches that are coming up and it’s a credit to be nominated with them.” LaPolice led the Bombers to the title game on his sophomore year as head coach, while Reed turned heads after the Eskimos’ unlikely run for the West Division finals. For Buono, the victories on the gridiron serve one purpose only. “I want to be able to use my gifts and talents to allow people to see Christ through me,” he told Living Light News. The celebrated coach invited Jesus Christ into his life at a Christian outreach for athletes in 1975. “My relationship with my Saviour has always allowed me to keep my life in balance,” said Buono. “I realize that whether I succeed or fail in my ventures, my relationship with Christ will not be affected.”
Birk more than brains and brawn INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Literacy can help a person to excel in learning and life. Nobody knows this better than Harvard economics graduate Matt Birk. The Baltimore Ravens centre was named the 2012 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year for promoting literacy among at-risk youth. Through the “Ready, Set, Read” incentive-based system, Birk ignited a read and write revolution in about 100,000 children in the Baltimore area. But for the 35-year-old, being smart, competitive, and philanthropic are simply a product of his relationship with Jesus Christ. “I can’t imagine getting through some of the things I’ve gone
through in my life without faith,” he shares in a Super Bowl Gospel Celebration video. “When I came into the league, I was just focused on me and my career and thought, working on my faith, that’s something that I’ll do later on; I don’t have time for it. But the NFL will humble you many times.” This prompted Birk to read the Bible and become a Christian. “I started exploring my faith and going to Bible studies. I started talking to the older guys, how they deal with things and their walks with God.” He tells Access Athletes, “I love playing football, but the day it interferes with being a Christian, husband, or father is the day I quit.”

A rhyme and reason for marriage TACOMA, WA — After garnering 17 million views of his video “Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus,” YouTube sensation Jefferson Bethke is back with another viral video. The spoken word poet talks about why real life marriages don’t fit the fairytale mold. Called “Sex, Marriage and Fairytales,” Bethke’s video asserts that for a marriage to last, spouses should view it from a Biblical perspective. He referred back to Jesus’ death on a cross as an illustration of perfect love. “Because His death was a proposal. He wanted you no matter the cost. While some guys propose on a knee, Jesus proposed on a cross.” In his video, he draws a comparison between Jesus’ sacrificial love for humankind and the attitude people should have towards their current or future spouse. “So die to self, put your flesh on a life sentence,” he says,

urging couples to love each other over their own wants and desires. While Bethke’s videos unwittingly draw both positive and negative reactions from people, the 22-year-old doesn’t claim to be an expert. “I’m just a messed up dude trying to make [Jesus] famous,” he writes on his Facebook page. “Thankful for healthy, gracefilled, discussion that exposes my idols and draws me closer to our King more and more each day!” When pastor and blogger Kevin deYoung posted a critique of Bethke’s Religion video, Bethke emailed him saying “thankful for your words and more importantly thankful for your tone and fatherly like grace on me as my elder.” In response, deYoung wrote “I can’t remember ever receiving such a teachable response to criticism.” Bethke’s new video has over 3.7 million views on YouTube.
Something to sing about CHICAGO, IL — Shawn Christopher never envisioned her life to be where it’s at today. A mother at 13, the 55-year-old songstress was a high school dropout who relied on welfare to support herself and her three young kids. Her break came with a budding singing career, touring as a vocalist for the rock and soul group Sonia Dada and as backup singer for Chaka Khan. Despite this opportunity, Christopher nearly destroyed her life with drugs. “On the road more and away from my kids more than I would have cared to be, in the late 1980s I got into cocaine,” she told The Chicago Tribune. She got sick with fibroid tumours shortly after. “I was told I needed surgery but would not pass the blood tests if
I was still using.” She quit doing drugs on the day of her surgery, and attributes the turnaround to God. “Giving my life to God and being able to grow spiritually has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life,” said the talented singer. Christopher is now the main worship team vocalist at Willow Creek Community Church, one of the largest churches in North America. She’s also releasing a new album this spring. “Today I am grateful for the opportunity to make amends and show the love of Jesus to other people,” says Christopher, who willingly drives about 70 km each way from her Chicago home to serve at the South Barrington church on weekends. “I changed from the inside out.” S Silver Sponsor

Mirror image makes headlines CAMROSE, AB — Holly Ferrier embraced a royal identity as Kate Middleton’s look-alike with 80 million people watching. Last January, the Duchess of Cambridge doppelganger competed in the French reality TV show Qui Sera Le Meilleur Sosie? (translation: Who Is The Best Look-alike?) for a chance to win $20,000. Ferrier, an advertising representative for the Camrose Canadian weekly, was discovered by the show’s producers on Facebook and was offered an all-expense paid trip to Paris to be on the show. The 26-year-old’s inaugural trip to Paris included meeting other celebrity clones and posing for the cameras on the red carpet. The former rancher, also born on Jan. 9 like Middleton (albeit four years later), drove an Austin Healey onto the stage because Prince William impersonator

By no way do I have such a blessing by my own doing,” said Ferrier. “The Lord wants me to use this in a godly way, as He does with all blessings.” Prior to the look-alike contest, Ferrier experienced a string of challenges, including the death of a family member and becoming a single mom overnight to her two-year-old nephew and infant niece. “That’s where [God] woke me up from my earthly slumber and I haven’t been the same since,” she said. “People wonder how I can be so positive after so much tragedy, it’s God. To be honest, if (the Paris trip) would have happened a couple years earlier, I would have done it for me, not for God.”

Immonen said this reality was at the forefront of her mind the entire time. “Kate (Richardson) and I pray at night together when rowing and I said early on ‘Let’s pray for the 27 million each night’ and we have – that [kept] it really real for me.” She’s especially determined to shine a spotlight on human trafficking prior to the 2012 Olympics in London. “Prostitution has already doubled in East London ahead of the Olympics because there are 10,000 men working on the construction site. PORT ST. CHARLES, BR — Crossing the Atlantic is no small feat yet a persevering female team recently broke, not one, but two world records by doing so. On Jan. 22, 2012 the crew of The Guardian became the first five-woman team to successfully row any ocean. At 45 days, 15 hours, and 26 minutes, the UK team made the fastest Atlantic Ocean crossing by an all-female team. The ladies rowed 3,000 nautical miles and braved 30 ft waves at the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge to raise funds and awareness on human trafficking. “This adventure is one of incredible highs and lows but when I’m in pain physically or mentally … I think I have the option to get off this boat in Barbados and there are 27 million who don’t have that freedom,” says Julia Immonen,

Viewpoints "It's been 25 years since I went to school, but as I recall, E = MC Hammer."
A Real Winner by Charles Colson
You can probably point to some who don’t ‘play nicely with others.’ who left his career in the construction industry, liquidated his retirement savings, and moved his family to South Africa to work at an orphanage for HIV/AIDS orphans. Brendan says he remembers the days when he would lay his head on the pillow at night, knowing he had worked hard to make money for himself and his family. Now he goes to sleep knowing that more than 120 children are loved, healthy, and safe. I’d say that is a good bit closer to true success. Now I’m not saying making good money is a bad thing. Nor am I suggesting everyone move to Africa. And I am definitely not saying that being truly successful requires being weak or timid. (Nobody, especially my grandmother, would accuse me of being either.) And in fact, many of those who committed their lives to redemptive causes were extremely determined and passionate individuals. William Wilberforce, for instance, who fought to abolish the British slave trade, was everything but diffident. The difference is he was fighting for the good of others, not his own agenda. The point is this: money is a faulty measuring stick for assessing a good life. Rather, a good life — as I describe in my book by the same title — is one lived by those who follow what Jesus Christ says in the Bible, “Whoever wants to save his life will lose it, whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” And if being “trustworthy, straightforward, and tenderminded,” which Wired magazine and some psychologists seem to say turns you into a loser, the world then, it seems to me, needs more losers. Charles Colson is the chairman of Prison Fellowship Ministries. Article reprinted with permission. © 2012 Prison Fellowship Ministries.

A recent study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology has concluded men who are nice (or “agreeable” as the study describes them) make as much as $7,000 less a year than those who are more ruthless. According to the study, “disagreeable” men are those who “aggressively advocate for their position during conflicts.” In contrast, s Charles Colson “agreeable” men are those who are known as “trustworthy, straightforward, compliant, altruistic, modest, and tender-minded.” In a Wired magazine article entitled, “Do Nice Guys Finish Last?” Jonah Lehrer writes, “When it comes to success, we assume that making it to the top requires ethical compromises … the point is that those who win at the game of life don’t obey the same rules as everyone else.” Now, while I doubt most successful people engage in ethical compromises, you can probably point to some who, shall we say, don’t “play nicely with others.” Take Apple icon Steve Jobs, who passed away last year from pancreatic cancer. Lauded by Time magazine as “technology’s great reinventor,” Jobs and his creativity have impacted nearly all of us — from Pixar to the iPhone. He ended life with $8.3 billion in the bank. But as his biographer Walter Isaacson said in an interview with NPR, Jobs was “a tough customer, very demanding … he divided everybody into heroes and dunces … he could be brutal.” Here’s the problem: it’s one thing to assert that those who make the most money will do whatever it takes to succeed, even if it means running over a few people in the process. But it’s another thing entirely to equate financial gain with true success. A colleague of mine just heard of a man named Brendan
What About Bob? by Phil Callaway One holiday weekend my friends Bob and Audrey of Winnipeg piled their full-sized van high with sleeping bags and children, then steered across 1,000 miles to the in-laws in Michigan. The weekend was filled with relatives and laughter. Sunday they headed home, driving through the night. When Audrey offered to drive, Bob clambered toward the back and drifted off. A few hours later, she pulled quietly into a rest stop, hoping the family would sleep on. After using the restroom, Audrey took a long sip of coffee and pulled back onto the freeway. Two hours passed as she spun the dial sampling talk shows. When she arrived in Fargo, North Dakota, the kids began to wake up. But not Bob. Wow, he’s tired, she thought. “Where’s Daddy?” asked her seven-year-old. “Very funny,” said Audrey, adjusting the rearview mirror. “He’s back there sleeping … isn’t he?” The children began pushing pillows aside. “Nope. He’s not back here.” Panic, worry, and fear overtook Audrey as she sought the next exit. She had no idea where the
s Phil Callaway rest area was. Was it two hours ago? Three? “Dear God,” she prayed, “help me find Bob. And keep him safe, wherever he is.” Pulling into a truck stop, she called the police. “Um … I … uh … left my husband in Minnesota,” she told the officer.
the rest stops in that area. You don’t go anywhere now, ya hear?” Audrey didn’t go anywhere. After thanking the officer for his help, she started down the list, dialing one number after another. Nothing. Almost out of hope, she dialed the last number on the list. “Do you have a guy there who — ?” “I shore do,” said a thick Norwegian accent. Moments later, Bob was on the phone. “Honey, I’m so sorry,” said Audrey. “I didn’t mean to —” She started to cry. And Bob started to laugh. Two hours earlier he had climbed out of the van to use the restroom. But when he came back, the van was gone. “Ha,” said Bob. “Very funny.” He circled the service station
“He’s back there sleeping … isn’t he?” “At a rest stop.” “Sorry, could you repeat that?” Audrey convinced him this was no joke. She had left her husband, but not intentionally, although he might be thinking so. “You hang on,” drawled the officer, “I’ll get all the numbers of
three times, expecting to find them grinning around the next corner. But they were nowhere to be found. To pass the time, Bob spent the hours washing people’s windshields and praying God would speak loudly to his wife,
perhaps give her a flat tire. He even visited with a trucker, who needed some encouragement. “You know,” the trucker told Bob, “this time with you was a divine appointment. I really needed this.” Early the next morning, Bob watched the headlights of a very familiar van pull into the rest stop, honking loudly. “It’s the first time I ever left him,” Audrey told me. “It will be the last.” “We’ve laughed a lot over this one,” says Bob. “It was like something out of a horror movie at first. Then I thought, well, make the most of it. Sometimes the only thing I can control is my outlook. My response. This was definitely one of those times.” Audrey learned a few things too. “It seems the only time I really learn is when there’s nowhere else to turn but to God,” she admits. “That night I learned the importance of casting all my cares on Him. They are His, and He is completely trustworthy. “And of course I learned that it’s always a good idea to count bodies before you pull out onto the freeway.” Phil Callaway is the author of ‘To Be Perfectly Honest: One Man’s Year Of Living Almost Truthfully Could Change Your Life.’ Visit him at www. laughagain.com.

Ain’t No Journey Hopeless

T
he morning dawned bright with the promise of another blistering hot day. My husband was glad he had gotten up at 5:30 a.m. to begin our trip home after a stay in an Idaho park. Most of the driving would be done in the cooler morning hours and he wouldn’t have to listen to groans about not having an air-conditioned RV. On the outskirts of Spokane, he spotted the sign directing traffic onto Highway 22 North and maneuvered our unit easily along the freeway, before rush hour. Things were going fine until he spotted a sign stating the mileage to the Washington/Idaho border. He thought it was a bit odd, since we had just left Idaho, but carried on. A few more miles he saw another sign: Sand Point 15 miles. Now he knew something
was amiss. Sand Point was in Idaho, a few miles from where we started. He pulled over to consult the map. I heard the groan from my comfort zone in the back. Highway 22 was the right road, but we headed in the wrong direction. It circled back where we started. A few miles further into Spokane there was a second exit for Highway 22 West which would put us on the right road. More groans. At least we parked in front of a restaurant. Breakfast brightened the mood until we returned to the camper, already heating up like an oven. Repeated attempts to start the engine resulted in silence. Silence from the engine, that is. As my husband checked under the hood, I prayed this would be something simple
There were no towns, no cool restaurants, no garages with friendly mechanics on the road. and easy to fix. We waited two hours for the garages to open. The mechanic found the battery was dead, but the alternator had been replaced a couple days before. A check of the system revealed a plug hanging loose. It was jammed between the wiring and appeared connected, but

Trading Faces wasn’t. The motor home was running on the battery and it eventually ran out. . It was a simple problem to fix and was cheap. In a short time, we headed off again, back to Spokane (during rush hour). It wasn’t until we were in the rolling, dry country of northern Washington we realized God had taken care of us. There were no towns, no cool restaurants, no garages with friendly mechanics on the road. It was miles of open wheat lands, beautiful to watch as we rolled by in the almost-comfort of our hot RV, but miserable to stare at from a hot RV brokendown on a narrow shoulder. Had we been here when we wanted, it would have been an unpleasant and costly experience indeed. Sometimes our lives take wrong turns and we end up going in a direction we haven’t chosen. Knowing God has a plan makes a big difference in how we respond. And He does have a plan, as Proverbs 19:21 of the Bible tells us, “Many are the plans in man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” Do you know God’s purpose for your life? Does it seem like you’re on the wrong road going in the wrong direction? Discover His plan for you and the journey will be joyful. was looking through family pictures the other day. I love oohing and ahing over the pictures of all my kids when they were babies. I did, however, make an interesting observation in several of the shots that included the entire family. When the kids were babies, my husband had a mustache. And I didn’t. Woah, not a pretty turn of events, I must say. I wonder if we could make a bad reality show out of it. How about Where’s Their Hair Now? Or even better, how about something like Trading Faces? Have you ever met a twofaced person? Have you ever been one? Behaving one way in one place, showing a totally different face at home, on the job, or at school? Or have you ever found that you’re quick to notice a fault
in someone else while totally missing your own? Even when your own shortcomings are as plain as the mustache on your face? Have you ever led someone to believe you’d accomplished more than you really have or you’re better at something than you really are? Do you ever let people believe you have your act all together when in fact, the only act that’s together is the “act.” I’m embarrassed to admit it, but it’s happened to me more than once. And I hate it. My heart’s desire is to become a more genuine, true follower of Christ every day. Not become a better actor every day. We all need to put our best face forward, as it were.
It doesn’t even really matter who has the furriest upper lip. Hypocrisy is one of the Lord’s pet peeves. We’re told in 1 Peter 2:1 of the Bible to stop all that nonsense. “Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind.” Another translation of the Bible phrases it like this, “So get rid of all malicious behaviour and deceit. Don’t just pretend to be good! Be
done with hypocrisy and jealousy and backstabbing.” Pretending? It leads to everything ugly. We need to get rid of it! Jesus said in Mark 7:6 of the Bible, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: ‘These people honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.’ ” It doesn’t even really matter who has the furriest upper lip. Whatever my lip condition, I never want it to be out of sync with my heart. Hypocritical behaviour is a bust. And when Christians have secret places of hypocrisy in our lives, they interfere with our worship. After all, there are no secret places that are hidden from Him. He sees our hearts. Enough duplicity. We need to replace every two-faced tendency with an honest heart — a heart that is close to the Lord, not far from Him. I want to look forward to meeting Jesus face to face with great eagerness and expectation. Face to face. Not face to face to face. When Loneliness Grips You by Dr. Charles F. Stanley
D
avid was on the run. He had left his home in an effort to escape King Saul and what appeared to be a sure death. The presence of those he met up with along the way may have softened the emotional blows from being an exile and a labelled renegade. But it did little to stave off feelings of loneliness gathering in David’s heart. David knew his situation s Dr. Charles F. Stanley wasn’t going to change quickly. Saul’s quest continued for years – leading to greater potential for loneliness and anxiety. But as we read the Psalms in the Bible, we discover David did not succumb. Years before, David had learned several truths concerning loneliness. As a young man, he had taken care of his father’s sheep. While he may have encountered other herdsmen, he was alone most of the time. I doubt, however, he would have been lonely, because David was keenly aware of being in God’s presence. This one truth changed the way he dealt with adversity and feelings of loneliness later in life. In Psalm 55 of the Bible, he wrote, “Cast your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken” (verse 22).
Don’t Ignore Your Feelings Loneliness is a painful emotion. Those who experience it know how deeply it can attack self-esteem. Therefore, we should never ignore any time our sense of isolation intensifies. There will be inescapable moments when we feel lonely. But likewise, there will be occasions when we enjoy being on our own. Other times, we may be in a room full of people and yet feel isolated. Loneliness is not contingent upon the company we keep, our social standing, or income. Some of the richest people in the world are the loneliest. Some of the poorest are among the happiest. David was the anointed king of Israel. But this didn’t prevent him from battling a profound sense of loneliness. He had to learn
how to deal ruthlessly with these feelings, and we need to do the same. Loneliness is a gateway to other negative emotions. If we don’t deal with it, we could end up also battling feelings of bitterness, anger, and frustration. Each one of these has serious consequences. Denial is not an option. Telling others, “I’m not lonely” when you’re falling apart inside does little good. If left unaddressed, loneliness saps your energy, divides your mind, and prevents you from enjoying the goodness of God’s blessings. Instead, tap into these truths: God loves you with an everlasting love and has promised never to leave you (Jeremiah 31:3; Hebrews 13:5). This means you are never alone. When you drive to the store, He’s with you. When you’re at work, He’s right beside you. He’s aware of every problem you face. And He has the solution. He knows the difficulties, the obstacles, and the route you need to take. David set the focus of his heart on God, not his circumstances. When you let go of your burden and allow Jesus Christ to work, you’ll notice a huge difference in the way you approach life. You won’t be battered by feelings of being alone.
Loneliness is not contingent upon the company. Instead, you’ll be able to say, as David did: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me” (Psalm 23:4). Jesus is your good Shepherd, and you never need to doubt His infinite love and personal care. We should never forget God created us for fellowship. He desires our friendship, love, and worship. Confessing your sins and accepting Jesus as your Saviour is where an eternal, personal relationship with God begins. To grow that relationship into a strong, healthy bond requires ongoing interaction. However, we are often afraid to open our hearts to God. And we transfer this hesitation to other relationships. We meet new people, but instead of spending time getting to know them, we derail friendships with messages like, “Don’t get too close,” “Stay where you are,” or “I don’t want to be bothered.” We pay a price for our reclusiveness. Doctors’ offices are full of people who are hurting emotionally and don’t understand why
they feel lonely. They have shut God out, closed the door on His fellowship, and dismissed their need for others. But David, even though his heart was breaking, refused to fall into this pattern.
The Right Steps To Freedom Loneliness isn’t a sin, but sin can ignite the feeling. If you are suffering in sin, don’t ignore it. God wants to free you but for this to happen, you must be willing to confess what you’ve done is wrong. Turn away from sin so you can return to the shelter of God’s loving arms. Recovery from loneliness begins when you recognize there’s a problem. Most of the time, this first step is the hardest to take. The second thing you must do is reconcile your desires with God’s. This means being willing to lay aside what you want in an effort to proclaim your need for and faith in Christ. You need to be serious in your desire to know God. Spend time with Him daily, and you’ll notice the loneliness you once felt is diminishing. The third step to overcoming loneliness is one bringing tremendous hope and assurance. It’s recalling God’s promises. David recognized the seriousness of his circumstances and immediately remembered the times God delivered him from trouble. When trouble strikes, think of a promise from Scripture. It may be something as quick and sure as “Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass” (1 Thessalonians 5:24). How do you overcome loneliness? There is one sure way, and that is through fellowship with Jesus Christ. Not only will you defeat loneliness; you will also lay a foundation of unshakable hope within your life that nothing can destroy. This is exactly what David did as a young man. Then years later, when adversity and loneliness struck, he proclaimed: “You will make known to me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forever” (Psalm 16:11). The couple has been serving as AWANA missionaries for Alberta, Saskatchewan, and all three territories for the past 16 years. They recently met a couple whose kids attended AWANA programs. Through the materials the kids were learning, the parents came to give their lives to Jesus as well. “The dad saw such an amazing change in his children and his wife, he also trusted Jesus as his Saviour,” explains Art. The Edmonton Indy isn’t the only car race that’s fuelled for fun. Although pint-sized by comparison, the AWANA Grand Prix is boosted by contagious racing fun. Cars are fashioned from a small block of wood, sculpted to the perfect allowable weight and transformed with paint and decals. Once these cars hit the 30 ft, four-lane track, just a hundredth of a second decides the winner. But the pinewood derby-style event isn’t just about speed and design. The Grand Prix began in 1964 to get dads more involved with their children’s activities. Today, it’s garnered a much broader audience – including single mom Denise Dumont. The mother of two is what you’d call a very enthusiastic pit-crew mom. She discovered AWANA after noticing a sign at Grace Point Church of God, shortly after moving to a new neighbourhood in southeast Edmonton. AWANA is an international children’s program that teaches kids age three to Grade 12 about the Bible. AWANA stands for “Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed” based on the Bible verse 2 Timothy 2:15: “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” In Edmonton alone, there are over a dozen AWANA clubs, and over 400 clubs in Canada. It’s growing exponentially with clubs in over 100 countries. The Grand Prix is an AWANA special
slated for Mar. 17. Northside families may want to check out the Grand Prix at North Edmonton Alliance Church on May 4. Grace Point organizer LuAnne Birkholz anticipates about 150 clubbers to participate. “With their parents and with friends and family, that number more than doubles to 350.” For Jason, winning the race feels great. “But it’s not about winning,” he said. “It’s about how it’s played.”

When things aren’t going so well, they’re then open to looking elsewhere for guidance and support.” Having been raised in a Christian home, and mentored by a grandmother who was a strong believer, Dempsey credits her relationship with Jesus in helping her to cope with the death of two husbands. “I have learned that if I rely on my own strength, I am doomed to fail,” she admits. “The burden is far too great for me to handle with my insignificant abilities as a human being.” Rather, she gives her burdens to God through prayer. “I talk, He listens. I lament, He takes it all in. I cry, He tells me He is sorry,” says Dempsey. “My hope rests squarely on the Lord.”

For the past two years, Kathy Dempsey-Glegloff, an Alberta registered nurse, has been tending to the spiritual needs of Edmonton patients – an effort inspired by the passing of her second husband in 2005. “I believe he was well cared for,” says Dempsey, whose husband died seven months after being diagnosed with stomach cancer. She lost her first husband in 1996 to a heart infection. “What I saw lacking was the support for him in a spiritual sense. And I, as his primary caregiver, did not feel equipped to help him in this area, either.” The latter is a common lament amongst nurses who, in spite of being trained in holistic healing, are uncomfortable tending to the spiritual. “Nurses don’t know how to talk to folks about this aspect of their lives and for that professor in the faculty of nursing, at reason, these needs are most often not the U of A Hospital. addressed,” says the single mother of five. “Spiritual care is an aspect of wholeNevertheless, the need remains. person care and thus integral to the nurse “Spiritual distress or dis-ease is as real a identity, caring for the whole person – condition as anything else we deal with,” body, mind, spirit.” says Dempsey. “And when people are in In the fall of 2009, Dempsey was hired crisis, they often turn to, or return to, by The River Community Church, a their faith.” congregation she’s belonged to since 2006. Working on their
moves by Lori Sandys Lapierre
Let’s face it – moving can be stressful. “I think it’s the lack of … support around you. You’re leaving everything behind,” states Margaret Johnston, co-facilitator of Moving In, a unique class offered for free to Edmonton newcomers. Johnston understands firsthand. She and her husband moved their children from Canada (Ontario) to Pennsylvania, then back to Canada (Edmonton). “We moved in the winter. It was very challenging to meet neighbours. Not having any friends or anyone that knew us, feeling a bit isolated – that was the most challenging.” Then she found a similar welcoming program at a church. “It helped me … in Pennsylvania to deal with the emotional transition and adjustment with moving.” Johnston then volunteered until her family moved to Edmonton, where she reunited with friend Wanda Crouse and suggested Southside Pentecostal Assembly (SPA) offer the class. “We both noticed quite a few people moving into Edmonton from other parts of Canada and around the world,” Crouse says. “Many people were coming from African countries, Asia, South America.” “It has been a privilege to meet so many people from so many places,” Johnston remarks. “We thought that people would move from different places in Canada. But little did we realize [they] were coming from all over the

world, for various reasons.” Crouse, also familiar with the challenges of moving when her pastor husband was relocated to Edmonton, points out that Moving In was launched with one newspaper ad in 2005. “We’ve never had to run another [one]!” she laughs. The class meets for 10 weeks. Participants are given the book After The Boxes Are Unpacked by Susan Miller, which examines the different aspects of moving from a Biblical perspective. Attendees are likewise encouraged to discuss their moving experiences – the positives and negatives of the transition, and the emotions. “I think because we talk so much about the emotional impact of a move, generally something people don’t talk about … people have been brought to tears. They realize other people feel the same way,” Johnston adds. “Although we all come from different places and backgrounds, we all have the same feelings.” “Women want to talk about their emotions, but … men do, too,” Crouse chimes in. The women also give practical information about the city, like things to do and places to go, encourage friendships and share Scripture.

she started a new life. Miraculously, Joseph was reunited with his family in 2009, and Massika exudes nothing but excitement for their life in Edmonton. And Moving In. “I recommend the program,” she states emphatically. “Every time I meet people [I tell them] it would be helpful.” “Everyone has a story, and they get to tell that story,” says Crouse. “[God] is bringing the people. The diversity is really just a picture of Heaven.” Johnston also points out the spiritual blessings. “Because it’s a Christian-based program, there have been people who have come to know the Lord,” she says. “Or re-dedicated their lives to the Lord, because at that time they’re open to commitment.” The spring session begins Wednesday, April 4, and run 10 weeks from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Johnston wants Moving In to be an encouragement. “There’s always something to look forward to if people keep a positive outlook,” she notes. “It’s so wonderful to hear that people do find help through it.”

“We provide resources and tools to help them deal with their situation,” Crouse remarks. For Regina Massika, the course was a lifeline. She fled to Cameroon from war-torn Congo with her husband, Joseph, and their children; Joseph then went missing after a rebel ambush. She and her children – now 13, 12, and eight – came to Edmonton as refugees. Massika visited SPA one Sunday and saw the Moving In program offered. She states that “many things” were helpful. “There were a lot of people from around the world. Everyone was giving their experience; how they came to Canada. I gave my experience, too.” “I [even] got my job from that meeting!” she exclaims. Church members rallied with her in praying for Joseph, even as
“People have been brought to tears when they realize other people feel the same way.”

Change Your Attitude
= Change Your Life
by Carolyn Tomlin “The remarkable thing is, we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.” — Charles Swindoll Attitude. What is it? Is it how we view something? Is it how we relate to a person or event? And if attitude is something we can easily change, why don’t more people make this turn-around? Although we may not have the answers, we do know that changing your attitude is possible. And yes, easy. Look at these few simple steps in getting started and improving the way you view life.
JOY IN SMALL THINGS Look for happiness in things that money can’t buy. For example, consider a beautiful sunset with shades of lavender, rose, gold, and crimson interwoven between low-hanging clouds. Place a silhouette of stark winter trees hovering near the horizon. This gift from God knows no boundaries as both kings and paupers see this magnificent sight. Small beyond measure — yet great when we consider the joy a sunset provides. How sad are the people who have eyes to see — but do not look. The psalmist in the Bible knew how to search for joy in God’s creations when he wrote, “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24).
THINK POSITIVE THOUGHTS
Dr. Charles Stanley, author, pastor, and founder of In Touch Ministries said, “We can be tired, weary, and emotionally distraught, but after spending time alone with God, we find that He injects into our
bodies energy, power, and strength.” We become what we think. Release negative thoughts. Replace these with mental pictures of a peaceful, tranquil setting — perhaps one that brought you a sense of fulfillment. Perhaps one reminding you of a time you were successful, or when you made a positive difference in the life of another.
GLASS HALF FULL?
How does your attitude affect your life? Do you know seniors who are sought out by people of all ages? As we grow older, change is part of living. It’s the price we pay for being alive. Maybe our energy and strength aren’t what they were years ago. Maybe our vision isn’t as clear. Or, our ears don’t pick up those faint sounds. Fortunately, modern devices are available to restore these senses to some degree. And medicine and skilled medical care give us added years of living a good life. When life becomes difficult, make it a practice of thinking about what you have left. Refrain from looking at what you have lost, think about all the blessings you have. Regardless of the situation, seniors who view life as a gift and choose to be happy will hopefully enjoy their days. And those who see only the burdens, disappointments, and loss of a former lifestyle become lonely and often, bitter. It’s a personal decision — we decide.
WHAT A WONDERFUL LIFE
Louis Armstrong shared his music with millions around the world. One well-known song, “What A Wonderful World” encouraged listeners to
reflect on the blessings our time on earth provides. Each 24-hour day offers individuals choices on using our stretch wisely. During this period, the choices we make determine our outlook. Perhaps we can compare life to a snowball rolling downhill, gaining speed and accumulating additional snow. It happens so fast. Yet, we have choices to view life as either positive or negative. And, that determines our attitude. What will your decision be about the time God has given you to live on this earth? Change your attitude — change your life. Yes, all things are possible.

History Your contribution
by Kim Perrone Some families have plenty of relatives, traditions, heirlooms. Other families are small, scattered, or perhaps starting over fresh. However, all family traditions and heirlooms begin somewhere. Why not make your generation the starting point for history in the making?
FAMILY FABRIC
Handmade tablecloths often find their way down the line. Maybe it’s time your family made a tablecloth or runner of its own. We’re not talking embroidery here – unless
that’s your thing. Purchase a solid, cotton cloth and fabric paints. Decorate with drawings, prints (sponges, feathers, and stamps), quotations, names, handprints, etc. Use your cloth day-to-day, on picnics, birthdays, or holidays. If you have a great time making that one, create specific cloths for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Easter. Matching cloth napkins or placemats can be fun, too.
COOKING CLAN
The family cookbook is a popular heirloom revealing family history (“Note: Uncle Fred used to eat these muffins every Saturday morning”),
In The Making

celebrate heritage through ethnic foods, and pay homage to the taste buds of those who came before you (“Grandpa Nick put what in his chili?”). Now might be the time for your family to start a collection of favourite meals – and there are many ways to do so. First of all, choose a selection of recipes. Then decide to handwrite or print out your recipes. If you have a handwritten recipe from a relative, it might be nice to scan and print it for inclusion in the book. Select a medium for your book. It can be as simple as a binder of recipes in plastic sheet covers, or you can use acid-free scrapbooking materials to develop a book akin to a work of art! Want a sturdy binding and professional look? Explore online photobook companies such as photoinpress.ca to design your book. Type in recipes, or scan them into image files. You can order one copy of your design, or purchase several as gifts.
WEB-SIGHT
Family tree websites bring family history into the digital age! Elect a relative to begin an online history book via a pay site such as mygreatbigfamily. com or for free at familydetails.com. This is a legacy everyone can contribute to no matter where they live. Add photos, videos, and stories. Relatives can comment as they witness children mature, careers advance, and weddings and births transpire.
DIGITAL DIARY
Is there a writer in your family? Honour her with a request to write up the family history. As well, collect stories of happy family occasions from everyone, including the youngest relatives. Have a tech-savvy friend compile the work into an electronic book or “eBook.” Make the title available to family and friends to read on their mobile, an e-reader, or their computer. Home movies have been passed down for decades, but digital files make them so much more compact than ancient film reels and aging video tapes. Get some of this archaic footage transferred to DVD to extend its life. As for today, the next time Aunt Tilly launches into that story you’ve heard a thousand times, record her. It’s only fair the next generation should hear her story too … isn’t it? Similarly, record grandpa reading bedtime stories for future generations to enjoy. If you have a relative who excels at a skill or hobby, record her tips for posterity. When you think about it, you could create an entire family encyclopedia of video biographies, messages to future generations, and how-to guides.
SILVER WEAR
Do you have “silverware guilt?” As in, you haven’t pulled out that heirloom silverware in years because who wants to keep polishing it? The Family Jewels, based in Alberta, has a solution: This home-based company can turn those beautiful handles into rings, pendants, and bracelets! Contact them at familyjewels.ca. Some folks make history, others record it. You can do both when you take time to create a special record or heirloom to pass down to future generations!

TRAVELING GANG by Kim Perrone When author Margaret Lee Runbeck declared, “Happiness is not a station you arrive at, but a manner of traveling,” one can only assume she wasn’t cruising down a long highway with antsy kids in the backseat. Next time you take to the road on a long trip, plan ahead to make your journey more pleasant and the arrival less desperate.
IT’S IN THE BAG
Surprise kids with a bag of car-friendly activities. Sorting through the bag in the backseat will take time in its own right! Include the basics for writing or doodling. Add aluminum foil sheets for sculpting shapes. Print out free sheets of activities and car games ahead of time. Mom’s Minivan has a nice selection at momsminivan.com. Avoid artistic mess with Crayola Color Wonder sets (crayola.com), which come in a variety of inexpensive kits. Mini Etch-a-Sketch or Magna Doodle boards are classic standbys, but reliable for eating up kilometres. Thinkfun (thinkfun.com) creates brainteaser toys and games that exercise idle brains. Consider the many “travel size” versions of familiar games in stores lately. Scholastic Children’s Atlas of Canada (Scholastic Reference) is a nice intro to geography. As well, print maps of your journey at mapquest.com and have older kids highlight progress, noting stops along the way.
SNACK ATTACK
Fight whining with healthy foods that quell hunger, but won’t inspire restless riots (skip sugary foods.)
Perhaps bring a small cooler and offer turkey and cheese wraps. Snack-size baggies or re-usable containers are perfect for servings of grapes, carrot sticks, pretzels, crackers, cheese cubes, or trail mix. Individual yogurt drinks and fruit juice serve as snacks in a bottle.
IT’S ELECTRIC
Do you really want the kids attached to an electronic screen for hours on end? Probably not, but let’s face it: if relying a bit on hand-held video games, DVD players, and smart phones keeps the kids entertained for a little while, why not make them part of your plans? Insist siblings agree on movies ahead of time and take turns with favourites. For something different, add a disk of home movies. Older kids can play travel agent from the backseat and realistically help to make the trip more efficient: throw a GPS app on a smart phone or iPad, and teach kids how to gauge distance electronically. Instruct them to search the Internet to locate hotels, rest stops, food venues, the cheapest parking garages, and points of interest ahead of time. Before you leave, download audio books – try audible.com. While not necessarily cheap, it’s a great service for exposing reluctant readers to literature and for appeasing the bookworm who gets nauseous reading in motion.
family. What a perfect time to play some ageappropriate classics the kids shy away from reading on paper. After all … where are they going to go? Trivia games are super adaptable to family interests. Devise games involving sports trivia, lines of dialogue from films, music tunes, or specific models of planes. Make a big deal of counting down sections of the trip via time or distance. Place bingo chips, pieces of paper, crackers … any sort of item you
can take from the bag piece by piece. For each period of time (half hour or 15 minutes) or set of kilometres (every 30 km) that passes, remove a piece from the bag. If you use food, rotate whose turn it is to eat a piece. In this way, kids can see for themselves “if they are there yet!” For each trip you take where you find the “manner of travel” a source of happiness, or even if you simply get to your destination safely, thank God for the time you spent together.

Nutrition
Wellness
for your
by Beth Bence Reinke, MS, RD Can we protect our brains by eating the right foods? Experts are optimistic. Leading researchers think people lose mental agility because brain cells communicate less effectively as we age. Two things contributing to this decline are inflammation and oxidative stress. Studies show foods we eat can positively affect the brain and modify the mental effects of aging. Think about these “top of the class” brain foods to include in your diet.
EGGS
Egg yolks are one of the best sources of choline, an essential nutrient for the health of cell membranes throughout the body, including brain cell membranes. In the brain, choline helps synthesize acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter critical for memory and thought processes. Adequate acetylcholine levels may protect against Alzheimer’s disease.
BLUEBERRIES
These little beauties showed amazing promise in studies, earning them the nickname “brain berries.” Research showed eating blueberries daily slowed or reversed age-related impairments in memory and motor coordination. Blueberries are packed with antioxidants that fight free radical damage which is linked to Alzheimer’s disease. They may even lessen brain damage from strokes.
WILD SALMON
Fatty fish like salmon are a great source of the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA, both of which are essential for brain development and function. DHA helps protect against dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease as well as depression.
WALNUTS
Have you noticed walnuts look like miniature brains? With the highest amount of omega-3 fats of all nuts, walnuts contain alpha-linolenic acid or ALA, a different omega-3 than is found in fish.
Walnuts are rich in the trace mineral manganese, which is essential for peak brain function. Nuts also contain vitamin E, a potent antioxidant. Even though they contain healthy fats, nuts pack a hefty calorie punch so stop at one serving per day.
COLOURFUL VEGGIES
Don’t forget the veggies! Antioxidants in vegetables help prevent buildup of plaque in the arteries, which allows better blood flow to the brain and lowers stroke risk. Just a few servings might make a big difference. In one study, older people who ate at least two cups of vegetables a day slowed their mental decline by 40 percent more than those who ate less than one daily serving.
COFFEE
Regular coffee consumption may reduce the risk of mental decline, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease. Like tea, coffee is brimming with antioxidants. Plus, as coffee lovers know, the caffeine content increases alertness and improves short term mental performance.
COCOA
Your spice rack contains brain foods for flavouring everything from apple pie to spaghetti sauce. The taste or smell of cinnamon and eating the herbs oregano and rosemary may improve memory. Cinnamon contains anthocyanins, which improve capillary function. Compounds in rosemary prevent the breakdown of a neurotransmitter that’s critical for remembering. Turmeric and curry may help prevent dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Flavanol antioxidants in cocoa powder can cut stroke risk by preventing clots and lowering blood pressure and ensuring healthy blood flow. To ensure maximum health properties, choose minimally processed cocoa powder. Look for non-alkalized cocoa powder, 100 percent organic if you can find it. Avoid Dutch cocoa, which is heavily processed.
B12 AND OTHER B VITAMINS
THE BOTTOM LINE
HERBS AND SPICES
Think B for brain — studies suggest getting enough of the B’s may protect against age-related mental decline. Vitamin B12 protects nerve cells and guards against brain volume loss. B12 and other B vitamins may help improve memory and verbal ability. Vitamin B12 is found in foods of animal origin such as meat, poultry, dairy, eggs, and fish.
TEA
Tea may fight inflammation and lower the risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Green tea contains theanine, which triggers the release of brain neurotransmitters improving mood and creating a calming effect. Black tea contains compounds that may improve blood flow, improve the function of blood vessels, and lower cholesterol — all of which lower the risk of heart attack and stroke.
Did you notice most of these foods are unprocessed? Boxed mac and cheese didn’t make the list. Neither did hot dogs, chips, pop, or anything with trans fat or artificial sweeteners. Natural, God-made foods are the best fuel for a sharp mind. To eat smart — power up with brain foods. Beth Bence Reinke, MS, RD is a registered dietitian who writes about food, health and nutrition. She is the author of Fruit Lovers’ Devotions to Go and several children’s books. Visit her website at www.bethbencereinke.com

fundraiser, supporting causes like the American Cancer Society, Girl Scouts, and Special Olympics. And she’s mentoring a young woman who will be a rookie in the Iditarod this year. On March 3, Jonrowe will again join almost 70 mushers on the trek from Anchorage to Nome. Although she finished 12th last year, the 58-year-old says she’s still competitive and believes she has a good chance to be in the top again. This year she anticipates competitors will deal with lots of snow and cold. She expects ground storms and notes there have been moose on the trail. “Every year is a different set of circumstances,” she says. “Every year, not only is the weather and trail different, but as competitors age they are different. You have to race the year you’re in, not the past.” Jonrowe talks about being close to God during the long solitude of the Iditarod. “As I travel through Alaska, by
stripping technology away, it’s just me, His creation, and Him,” she continues. “You’re stripped back down to appreciate the simple things, like just sleeping warm is a blessing, a bowl of soup is as good as any meal in a gourmet restaurant. God gives me so much joy when I’m on the race. I never feel more alive.”

She’s pretty in pink but tough as iron. DeeDee Jonrowe is a triathlete, cancer survivor, and icon on the Iditarod race scene. Not only will 2012 mark Jonrowe’s 30th Iditarod, it will be the 40th running of the 1,150 mile race commemorating the delivery of serum to icebound Nome, Alaska by dogsled during the 1925 diphtheria epidemic. As a musher, Jonrowe is easy to spot. Her pink parka stands out whether she’s in a crowd or skimming across the snowy tundra with her team. Raised around the globe in a military family, Jonrowe moved to Alaska as a teenager. She was working as a biologist when she met and married her husband, Mike. Using dogs to travel to some remote locations, she caught the bug for racing. In 1980 she took her first turn at the “Last Great Race on Earth.” Since then, not only has Jonrowe recorded the fastest Iditarod time for a woman, but she has 16 top 10 and two second place finishes in the grueling race, which can last 10 to 17 days and see temperatures well below zero. Nevertheless, she feels her greatest accomplishment was just finishing in 2003. The preceding summer, Jonrowe was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent a double mastectomy and months of chemotherapy. Four weeks after finishing chemo, she entered the Iditarod. “I was running to have my life back,” she says, admitting she only made it “by the protective nature of my dogs and the grace of God.” She finished 18th. Jonrowe is encouraging: “You can still have things you’re passionate about on the other side [of cancer]. It’s not the same, but it still can be very, very good.” The parka isn’t just a fashion statement. Jonrowe reveals after chemotherapy she found she couldn’t bear the wind and cold as before. Taking a cue from Eskimo women who wear fur inside of their parkas, Jonrowe says that “instead of going to more modern technology,” she was “stepping back in time to people who have best survival skills in the Arctic” and had one made for herself. “Part of what I love is connecting with culture and the past.” Jonrowe finds the relationship with her dogs
to be one of the most rewarding aspects of this lifestyle and is consistently recognized for her treatment of them. “Nobody gets rich doing this,” she tells Living Light News. “I do it because I love it.” Eighty dogs live at Jonrowe’s Willow, Alaska, kennel. She trains 32 then chooses 16 for a race team, which she likens to “trying out for Varsity.” During the year she competes in other races, developing her team. This season those included Knik 200, Tustumena 200, and Paul Johnson Memorial - Norton Sound 440. In 2011 she took first place in the T-200, though she had to “scratch” the race this past January because one of her dogs came unsnapped and ran off, frightened. Fortunately, the wayward team member was reunited safely. “I’m not so worried about something happening to me,” Jonrowe says. “I’m concerned about keeping my dogs safe. “I always liked to do things that were beyond my reach, living on the ragged edge,” she continues. “Because of my relationship with God, I see His protective arm on my dogs. He shows me His unconditional love through my dogs.” Jonrowe believed in God as a little girl, but never personalized her parents’ faith in Jesus Christ, and she abandoned those teachings when she attended college. Then, working in Bethel, Alaska, after graduation she grew lonely and homesick. One day, a bush pilot who “possessed incredible peace” flew her from a remote inlet to another worksite. “He spoke of God’s love and invited me to attend the local church where he was associate pastor.” She accepted his invitation. “Walking into that church was like returning home, back where I belonged,” she says. “All my life I’d heard that Jesus Christ died to pay the consequences for my sin. I’d taken the message for granted, never responding to it personally. This time was different.” She marks that morning as her spiritual turning point. She began reading the Bible as God’s love letter to her. “Rather than regarding the Bible as a set of rules, I began understanding it as God’s plan to help me live life without scars and consequences.” In addition to mushing, Jonrowe competes in triathlons, notably completing the Ironman at Kona in 2006. She also is a frequent speaker and

It’s never too late for a fresh start
It was the beginning of a yearlong international celebration of a historic milestone. On Feb. 6 the festivities began surrounding the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne – only the second monarch to commemorate a Diamond Jubilee. In a message to the public, the Queen said she looks forward to the future, and notably used the message to “dedicate myself anew to your service.” For some, the idea of the oldest
reigning monarch starting “anew” was strange. How does an 85-year-old start fresh? The Queen is planning on demonstrating just that over the rest of her reign. The thing is, a new beginning in life can be much more than rededicating yourself to your job, marriage, or family. And you don’t have to be the head of the commonwealth to get a new start. Everyone can begin fresh, no matter where you call home, what you do during the workday, or how many birthdays you’ve celebrated. In fact, the Bible says it’s not only possible to have a new beginning – it’s necessary. In John 3, Jesus Christ, the Son of
God, explains, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the Kingdom of God unless they are born again … Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit” (verses 3-6). Since Jesus Christ died for your sins – but was raised to life – He made it possible for everyone to have a spiritual birth and fresh start with God! It’s when you confess your sins and accept Him as your Saviour you experience this new birth yourself. The Bible goes on to say, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come” (2 Corinthians 5:17). If you have never been born again
spiritually, getting a fresh start on life and having a relationship with Jesus that will continue into Heaven, the Kingdom of God, you can do so right now by praying from your heart: Dear Jesus, I believe You are the Son of God, that You died for my sins, but was raised to life again. Please forgive me for the sinful things I have said and done, and come into my life so I may be born again spiritually and have a new life with You that will continue into Heaven. Help me to grow spiritually and walk with You from this day forward. In Your Name I pray, Amen

Relationships A Marriage-Saving Question by Dr. Greg Smalley You’re probably thinking how can one question save a marriage or relationship? It’s difficult to believe something so important can be so simple. You may be feeling angry, confused, hurt, or perhaps even alone but yes, this question can improve or even save your relationship. If asked, most couples could create a list of the things they need from each other to have a good relationship. For example, a wife might say that respect, quality time, playing with the kids, and sharing housework are her needs from her husband. The key is that each person has different needs and desires which help make a strong relationship. Therefore, a husband and wife are a goldmine of relational skills. Before we get to the key question, determine the type of relationship your mate wants to have. By using a scale from zero to 10, with zero being terrible and 10 being a great marriage, a powerful question to ask is where would you like the relationship to be? By asking this type of question, you can clearly see the type of relationship your mate longs to have. Naturally, almost every person answers that they would like to have a nine or a 10. After all, how many of us want to live in misery?
s Dr. Greg Smalley Next, evaluate where the relationship is currently. Ask your mate on a scale of zero to 10, overall, where would you rate the marriage today? In most cases, a man will rate the marriage two to three points higher than his wife
relationship or marriage is: As you consider our relationship, what are some specific things we can do over the next week that would move us closer to a 10? As this question is being answered, listen for the exact things your spouse is communicating to you. This question is powerful because it changes the focus of the relationship. Instead of feeling overwhelmed because the focus is on the problems, listing the ways to improve the relationship turns the attention towards solutions. Being in the middle of a marital conflict can feel like you’re stuck in quicksand.
After all, how many of us want to live in misery? will, so if a difference occurs between you and your spouse, don’t let this discourage you. Be sure to give each other the necessary time to share why you rated the marriage the way you did. The next question is the crucial one. In fact, in some ways, it doesn’t matter how the other questions were answered. The question that can improve or even save your
The more you dwell on the problem and who’s to blame, the faster and deeper you sink. However, solutions are like a rope tied to a tree. They provide the means to change, freeing the relationship from sinking in the quicksand. As your mate begins to answer these questions, remember she may be reluctant at first. Your partner may feel your feelings may be

hurt – or even worse, that you’ll hurt his or her feelings by a defensive response. It’s crucial to patiently give each other the time to talk. Consistently reassure each other about the security of your relationship – no matter what is said or how things are rated. If you both feel secure in your love, almost without exception you’ll be able to provide many helpful specifics which can strengthen the marriage. I am convinced answering this type of question on a weekly basis could reduce longstanding marital problems. Imagine how low the divorce rate would fall if conflicts, hurt feelings, and anger were resolved within a week. The key is remembering love is a decision and not merely a feeling. Many times we do not like loving our mate. We can, however, make the decision to love them by doing the things that strengthen the relationship. Questions like the one mentioned here can help as you make the decision to love your mate.

Vibrant Vancouver by Sarah Chestnutt Summer’s just around the bend, but get a head start on the vacation season by looking west. Pack your bags and set your sights on a vibrant city waiting to welcome the whole family — Vancouver, British Columbia. The early spring makes Vancouver the place to be — especially its parks. And the leader of the pack is definitely Stanley Park. These 1,000 acres of West Coast forest are lined with dozens of well-marked trails allowing you to meander through the giant trees. Check out the seawall pathway for some of the world’s best sea-to-sky mountain views and the city’s best sunsets. See it with someone special by stopping at Spokes and renting a bicycle built for two for a tandem ride. If your next stop’s beyond walking distance, or if your feet just need a break, hop aboard the next SkyTrain. It’s fast and efficient, with another train arriving every 2-5 minutes. A $9 all-day pass good for all lines is perfect for tourists. Vancouver’s a shopper’s paradise — whether they’re shopping for a souvenir
If
Canucks puck, blown glass bauble from an artisan, or new outfit designed from up-and-coming fashionistas. For high-class shopping options head downtown to Robson Street — host to almost all of North America’s leading clothing brands and home to high fashion, designer shoes, and fantastic jewellery. The street’s always lined with shoppers clutching latest finds, but if you don’t want to break out the credit card, grab a coffee at Starbucks and window shoptill-you-drop. Up until last year, food vendors were only allowed to sell popcorn, chestnuts, and hot dogs. Now, however, carts line the streets selling mouth-watering meals on the go. Much more than hot dogs, try out crepes, butter chicken, or Koreanstyle tacos. Check out Foodie Tours for a tour of different vendors sure to end with satisfied taste buds and a full belly. For gifts so one-of-a-kind you’ll end up keeping them for yourself, Granville Island is a must. While you can drive there, jump on the Aquabus ferry (all-day passes only $15) for a unique trip then spend the day exploring the island in the middle of a city. Free maps at red info huts let you be your own guide.
You Go...
It’s perfect for shoppers looking for the unique. What’s better than a souvenir with a story? Watch artisans at work, then pick up pottery, hand-made jewellery, or glassware with a memory attached. Even if you’re not a shopper, the Island’s the place to go for atmosphere like nowhere else. The Public Market’s teeming with crafts, fishmongers, and always-fresh food. When it’s time for outdoor adventure, head across the historic Lions Gate Bridge to the North Shore. Will you be able to tell your friends you made it? Made it across the Capilano Suspension Bridge that is. Join those who faced their fears and crossed the Capilano River — on a bridge 450’ across and 230’ above the water. It’s one of the most popular Vancouver-area attractions, and not just for the bridge. Opened last year, Cliffwalk is a heartstopping journey through a rainforest on suspended walkways jutting out from the cliff face. Not for the faint of heart, the narrow walkway with glass-bottom offers views of the river far below. Popular Grouse Mountain is open all-year, so check out a ski hill minus the snow by hiking or biking the trails or taking a zipline with top speeds of 80 kilometres an hour. A definite mountain attraction is the SkyRide. North America’s largest aerial tramway is a journey like no other.
The view will take your breath away, but hopefully not your appetite. There’s plenty to choose from at the top, whether the mood strikes for a romantic dinner at The Observatory or digging into the famous nachos of Altitude Bistro. For a glimpse of the high life, head to West Vancouver. Go for a drive and take in the multi-million dollar homes lining the streets, many with stunning ocean views. While in the area be sure to stop at Ambleside Beach. Go beachcombing and stroll along the seawall — there’s enough wildlife to be spotted that kids will forget how long the walk may seem. End off a busy day splashing with belugas at the Vancouver Aquarium or cheer on the White Caps at BC Place complete with a new $500 million roof. Check out expedia.ca for great deals on hotels. Find rooms for under $80/ night at trusted chains like Best Western and Days Inn. Or splurge and stay at an iconic part of the skyline. Enjoy the landmark Fairmont Hotel Vancouver (book online for a 20 percent discount) or the newlyreopened Rosewood Hotel Georgia (stay two nights and get the third free) for an unforgettable experience. Summer may not have arrived yet, but this spring, experience the culture and atmosphere of Vancouver with an unforgettable trip for the whole family!

a student who can’t muster the courage to speak in class. She finds her voice when she starts a podcast. As a DJ, Tara promotes music, self-expression, and a message to celebrate each other’s differences. “I loved this role because the character is sort of the voice of her generation,” Ryan says. “This was a fun role but it was also one with a great message.” Ryan started making a splash in her role on Disney’s The Suite Life on Deck. In the TV series, she plays Bailey Pickett, a Kansas girl who enrolls in Seven Seas High, a school in the middle of the ocean. Ryan currently stars in Jessie, airing on Family Channel in Canada. She plays a girl who moves from a small town to New York City where she accepts a job as a nanny. “I’m having a great time doing what I love. I’m so thankful for my fans,” Ryan says. Despite the bright lights and attention that come with a successful acting career, the 18-year-old describes herself as a normal, down-toearth girl who loves her fans and catches a ride to work with her mom. “Everyone sees Debby Ryan on stage as confident and polished, but in real life I’m not pretentious or showy. If you saw me on set I’d probably just be hanging out eating Easy Mac. My mom keeps everything running around here!” Ryan loves acting, but like her character in Radio Rebel, she also has a passion for music. As an outlet for her passion and to keep in touch with fans she writes a blog, sharing her favourite music, inspirations, and answering reader questions. “I love performing, writing, and producing music,” she says.
For now, acting is keeping her plenty busy. Ryan began acting professionally when she was seven. Since then, she’s had numerous roles including Barney: Let’s Go To The Firehouse, the 2008 feature film The Longshots, and Disney’s 16 Wishes. Ryan was born in Texas, then moved to Germany with her family. While there, her mother worked with a theatre. Ryan describes herself as a shy kid who hid behind her mom and watched her direct plays. “I have vivid memories of being in the auditorium when I was six and watching someone put on a robe and a cloak and become another person. I was just fascinated by that,” she says. Ryan was 10 when she moved back to the U.S., and by then she had the acting bug. She mailed an audition tape to Disney, and then waited. “Once I got a call-back, it all happened very quickly,” she remembers. As Ryan grew up in the spotlight, she began to question her priorities and decisions. “My parents took me to church growing up. Religion was part of my life, but it was never something they forced or pushed on me,” she says. “They always told me to make my own decisions.” When she was nine, Ryan started doubting the faith she’d grown up in. “I told my parents I wasn’t sure I believed in God. The whole ‘God thing’ seemed good for them, but I just didn’t feel it. If I don’t believe in something I’m not going to pretend to believe in it.” Ryan describes herself as a black and white person with no room for grey, so believing in an unseen God was hard for her. Even when she doubted, her parents continued taking her to church and answered any questions she had about what she heard there. “I wanted to know more about their faith,” she tells Living Light News. “Eventually I started learning about
faith on my own, and soon I started craving closeness with God and to have a relationship with Him.” One night, alone in her room, Ryan began praying. She confessed to God that she just didn’t feel His presence. She had watched people pray and sing to Him but she couldn’t feel Him. She asked God to draw close to her; she wanted to be sure of Him. That night she began to feel God in a tangible way for the first time. She recalls feeling His presence as if He was sitting beside her. “I knew that feeling couldn’t be taught or faked,” she says. “God loves me and created me and sent His Son to die for me. He wants a relationship with me.” Since then, she says her relationship with God has grown. “Once I started learning about faith on my own, I just started craving to know more and more about God.” It’s not something she’s doing alone. She regularly meets with other young actors in her dressing room. “It’s literally a bunch of kids in the industry — kids with hearts after God and, who want to make a difference,” she told SUSIE Magazine. “We all have the same common drive that runs through us — and we want to share it.” Ryan strives to lead a life that will please God. That desire has changed the way she acts and the roles she accepts. “My faith and morals help me set personal and professional boundaries,” she tells Living Light News. “The fact that I am who I am and I stand for what I stand for makes it hard to find good roles sometimes. But I know another role will come along and I’ll be stronger because of it.” There are lots of sides to Debby Ryan; actress, singer, daughter. No matter what role she’s taking, though, Ryan is always true to herself and what she believes in. “This is a tough town and a tough industry,” she says. “My faith helps me make good decisions. I want God to be proud of me.”
Living Light News - March/April 2012 STARFIELD The Kingdom starfieldonline.com Review by Josh McConnell
JukeBox
Sometimes going independent after years working with a record label is the best thing for a band. They have a larger following due to the extra exposure from years with a label, but now there are less overhead costs than with a contract. More marketing efforts are needed by the band, but the relationships built with fans are that much more significant. This is exactly where Starfield is positioned with the release of The Kingdom, the first album from the Winnipeg band since their Sparrow Records departure. Continuing the trend from Starfield’s past releases, the album’s 10 tracks are worship tunes known for their simplicity. The production, due to its independent nature, is grittier than past releases, but the core content is still intact. Starfield fans should be more than happy with The Kingdom’s 43 minutes of material; it’s more of what we’re used to from the band, only better. Stand out songs include the title track, “Speak Now Jesus,” and a new take on the classic hymn “I Have Decided.” Anyone wanting anointed worship music, including worship leaders looking for new music to bring to their congregation, should give Starfield’s latest a listen. The Kingdom can be purchased on iTunes and a full-length preview is available on YouTube.
JACI VELASQUEZ Diamond jacivelasquez.com Review by Kevan Breitinger Once a mainstay of the Christian pop circuit, Jaci Velasquez has in the past decade appeared in several Christian films, married Nic Gonzales of the band Salvador and had two children, and become the co-host for the Doug and Jaci morning show on Today’s Christian Music radio. She now rejoins the music scene with her 11-track Inpop Records debut, Diamond. Same husky vocal and engaging delivery, but Velasquez doesn’t stray too far from the pop music rule book here. A few songs flirt with electronica (the hard-driving dance track, “Trust In You”) and brass (the bouncy “Girl,” a bold message of purity to young women). The Spanish “Con El Viento A Mi Favor” (“With The Wind In My Favor”) at track six serves as a nice intermezzo point, and the lush strings don’t hurt either. There are a few power pop tracks, the big love song “Fall For You” and the nuanced “Guilt,” but I enjoyed her most on “Stay,” a horn-laced, beat-driven percolator. No big surprises on Diamond, but her fans will celebrate this radio-friendly return.
GROUP 1 CREW Outta Space Love: Bigger Love Edition group1crew.com Review by Josh McConnell Group 1 Crew has gone through significant changes lately. With tremendous mainstream success since their inception in 2007, the trio has become a duo as vocalist Pablo Villatoro left last year. While the group decides on the next step to take, they have released an expanded edition of their hit album Outta Space Love.
Labelled the Bigger Love Edition, Outta Space Love now has an additional six tracks. Two of the six aren’t completely new tracks, however, as these were offered in 2010 with the original release as either iTunes or pre-order bonuses. Nonetheless, the new songs continue the trend of fun pop tunes that will be welcomed by all fans. The very obvious comparisons to Black Eyed Peas still exist and newfound influences by current mainstream chart-toppers LMFAO are sneaking in. It is no wonder why Group 1 Crew has been so successful. They offer an inspiring alternative to major mainstream acts. But comparisons aside, the members certainly have talent and the potential to stand on their own. If you haven’t listened to Outta Space Love already, the Bigger Love Edition leaves no excuse not to give them a try.
SARAH MACINTOSH Current myspace.com/ sarahmacintoshmusic Review by Kevan Breitinger Sarah MacIntosh fronted the critically acclaimed rock band, Chasing Furies, who disappeared quickly after their initial intriguing late ’90s intro. The talented songwriter is back solo this time with a collection of 11 fresh, thoughtfully arranged originals well worth checking out. She’s a breathier Norah Jones, with all of Jones’ versatility. This much appreciated quality shows up immediately in the intelligent arrangements and instrumentation of Current, beginning with the unexpected harp of the opening title track. Many of these alt-folk songs have strong pop elements, but they’re enhanced greatly by nuanced details throughout, strings and synth injecting a lush chamber effect, while MacIntosh’s breathy yet ethereal vocal slides easily across full chords. Her phrasing and vocal acrobatics add texture, and her well written lyrics keep the material a step above the usual radio fare. Favourite tracks include the lilting and lovely “Galaxy” and the stately ballad “Hiding Place.” As the album draws to a close she does some evocative, quiet howlers (“You’re Coming” and “Calling”) that I’m still trying to figure out, but I mean that in the best possible way. Sarah MacIntosh, celebrating the mystery – for anyone who appreciates fresh.
TOBYMAC Dubbed & Freq’d: A Remix Project tobymac.com Review by Josh McConnell It has been seven years since tobyMac last released his remix project Renovating Diverse City. Since then, the former dc Talk member has pumped out two full length studio albums that have been left untouched by tobyMac’s remix fascination. Until now. Titled Dubbed & Freq’d: A Remix Project, tobyMac has taken 12 songs from his last two efforts and is breathing new life into them. Obviously inspired by recent remix trends, the new disc adds dubstep-esque elements, electronica and heavy will.i.am-like digitization. The music itself feels like tobyMac meets Deadmau5 with some Black Eyed Peas and Linkin Park interludes thrown in for good measure.
23 Remix projects are always a little awkward. Fans either love or hate them because the songs they have listened to for years are now suddenly different. Either they welcome it as a reinvented track or they treat it as blasphemy. But tobyMac has treated his originals with respect as his remixes are tastefully done and have not gone overboard. Fans should have nothing to sweat about when Dubbed & Freq’d: A Remix Project hits shelves on March 27.
LINDSAY MCCAUL If It Leads Me Back lindsaymccaul.com Review by Kevan Breitinger Lindsay McCaul, a one-time linguistics major at Moody Bible Institute and worship leader at suburban Chicago megachurch Harvest Bible Chapel, has already garnered national attention performing “Take My Hand” on TLC reality program Say Yes To The Dress: Atlanta and opening on platinum-selling band Casting Crowns’ Come To The Well tour. Her debut If It Leads Me Back, is slightly reminiscent of Sarah McLachlan, pleasant girl-pop, with less stylistic creativity. Her strengths lie in her honest lyricism and reflective delivery. While the arrangements and production lack a bit of creativity, she cannot be faulted for her Biblical focus and warm interpretations. First single, pop-rock track “Say My Name,” is based on Lot’s wife looking back and becoming a pillar of salt, while the quietly prayerful “Let Go,” sharing McCaul’s own struggle with an eating disorder, encourages our surrender of control. She is quite capable vocally, moving easily from husky, hushed tones (“Ready” and the worshipful “Take My Hand”) to powerhouse (the dramatic “Speak”). But I liked her best when she strayed from the formulaic; the lilting “You Never Change” and the delicate strings of “Hold On To Me” indicate she has more in her than this debut reveals. And I gotta give her props for the achingly melodic title track, a stunning closer. Her sophomore project may be the one to look for.
DAVE BARNES Stories To Tell davebarnes.com Review by Kevan Breitinger You might think you don’t know Dave Barnes, but that may be due to his chameleon effect; this talented Nashville songwriter refuses to be locked down stylistically. Previous records have covered rock, blues, and soul to R&B. But in these various forms, you’ve heard him behind TV shows (Brothers and Sisters, Life Unexpected, and Suite Life on Deck) and movies (Employee of the Month and My Super Ex-Girlfriend); he’s also toured with John Mayer, Bonnie Raitt, Taylor Swift, and done the Bonnaroo Tour. See what I mean about diverse styles? Stories To Tell goes more country than previous projects, adding more programming and synth this time around. Even if country isn’t your thing, the accessible vocals, orchestral accents and syncopated percussion keep these 11 original tracks interesting enough that you’ll get over it. Think Jason Mraz pop, less sweetness and a jolt of country. The songs are well constructed, intelligently arranged, and cover a lot of personal ground, many of them written as the Barnes family awaited the birth of their first child. Barnes’ warm vocal only adds to the air of intimacy, and several tracks, like the nuanced “Warm Heart in a Cold World,” beautifully portray committed love. The delicate closer “One of Us” ends a solid album well. Turns out you only thought you didn’t like country.

Hugo is a work of art by one of today’s most acclaimed directors, Martin Scorsese, who won a Golden Globe for his efforts. The movie tells the story of a boy who secretly lives in a Paris train station in 1930. He was raised by his inventor father, who was working on an abandoned, broken robot which could write when wound up. Orphaned after a fire, Hugo works at the station running the giant clocks. When the movie opens, Hugo’s caught trying to steal a mechanical mouse from an old man named Georges, who runs a repair shop. Georges takes Hugo’s father’s journal outlining the mechanical man he was working on and threatens to burn it. Hugo follows Georges home and winds up befriending
Isabelle, an orphan being raised by Georges and his wife. Hugo had been stealing from Georges to fix up his father’s robot. Georges asks Hugo to help him in the shop and when he feels Hugo has paid for what he stole, he will return the journal. Hugo discovers Isabelle carrying a heart-shaped key that might be what winds up the mechanical man. Hugo tells Isabelle he thinks the robot may reveal a message from his father. After trying the key, they’re disappointed as the robot produces cryptic squiggles. Soon, however, it’s writing again. Instead of writing a message, the robot draws a picture of the man in the moon with a small rocket in its eye. The picture is similar to a scene from an old, obscure movie Hugo’s father mentioned. After the robot draws, it writes the name Georges Méliès at the bottom – Isabelle’s godfather’s name. Hugo and Isabelle show the picture to her

THE HOUR THAT MATTERS MOST by Les and Leslie Parrott
SMALL THINGS WITH GREAT LOVE by Margot Starbuck
Ballet, soccer, errands, two working parents – how can today’s busy family find time to enjoy a meal together? Les and Leslie Parrott, family therapists, have written a short book packed with insight, personal experience and practical advice. The book is co-authored by Stephanie Allen and Tina Kuna, owners of Dream Dinners, a business that offers nutritious frozen dinners for busy families. The Hour That Matters Most, however, is not an advertisement for the home business. The Parrotts delve into how to establish open communication with your kids, how to have fun and meaningful conversation, and even how to develop gentle manners. Allen and Kuna share some of their life lessons, ending each chapter with an easy-to-make recipe. The authors present their material in an informative and nonjudgmental style. It’s assumed the readers are married but single parents will also find encouragement in the pages. Listening, laughing and loving as you celebrate meals can help you and your family discover there’s an “Hour That Matters Most.”
Treating people like Mother Teresa as a superhero can be a problem. “If I make loving the poor a big thing, then I’m off the hook,” claims Margot Starbuck in her book Small Things With Great Love. How many times have you wished to make a positive difference in the world, if only you have this person’s extraordinary calling, or that person’s time and resources? The truth is, anyone can be a Good Samaritan without changing more than one’s attitude. Not only does the book offer a simple but profound central premise, it also gives practical advice for everyday application. An Adventure Challenge (for individual or group) concludes the book, acting as a springboard between identifying your neighbours and learning to love them to actually putting it into practice. It also has a fun “Choose your own adventure” feel at the end of each chapter. Delivered with wit and humour, this remarkable book compels readers to become world changers through small things with great love, instead of just wishing they were.

THE SHAPING OF AN EFFECTIVE LEADER by Gayle D. Beebe
HOPE FOR PARENTS OF TROUBLED TEENS by Connie Rae
Managing a large organization can be challenging. In his book, The Shaping of an Effective Leader: Eight Formative Principles of Leadership, college president and former pastor Gayle D. Beebe simplifies the key steps to transformation on the journey to building something great. The author connects success to the importance of having great mentors. Mentors can introduce necessary traits if lacking and coach how best to implement success principles. Management giant Peter Drucker is one of Beebe’s mentors and cites his world renowned teachings throughout the book. The author motivates readers to further examine Drucker’s writings. Beebe’s intention with this book is to identify and articulate what he calls the eight principles of effective leadership. He does so by creating a simple pyramid made up of the following traits or levels: character, competence, chemistry, culture, compatibility, convictions, connections, and commitment. Personal responsibility needs to be focused on becoming fruitful at the various levels. Like the building of a trustworthy structure, one that you can expect to last the test of time, each principle builds upon another to create a strong foundation for success in executive management.
The teenage years are a time of excitement and new hurdles. What do you do when you’re a parent of a challenging teenager? Author and licensed counsellor Connie Rae wrote Hope for Parents of Troubled Teens from personal experience. Rae begins with a candid portrait of her own family’s sixyear struggle with their son’s drug addiction and recovery. During the worst moments with her son, she and her husband just wanted to know if “anybody understood what was happening to us.” This book is her heart’s call for families facing the most difficult of situations. Rae covers topics that include peer pressure, addiction and running away. While focused on worstcase scenarios, this book is a wonderful guide for any parent, regardless of their child’s age or situation. Rae gives Biblical references and practical suggestions to examine family relationships and build up healthy parentchild communication. Each chapter ends with a hands-on “something to do” section and a short prayer. Whether you’re looking to build a stronger family foundation as a parent, or seeking guidance and practical parenting advice from someone who’s been there, this book is full of valuable wisdom for every family.
