I’m so pleased to welcome you to our first issue of 2020. Now that we’re in a new year and a new decade, I wanted to take a moment to wish you much happiness, health and joy. It’s fitting that the theme of this issue is about fresh starts—there are so many of them to celebrate. Two of my favourite moments of the year so far were going away with my two children and the Living Luxe New Year’s party we held at Toronto’s iconic Casa Loma. Contributors, clients and readers came together for an evening of good food and good company. (I’m thankful for my good friend Nadia Di Donato for helping us create such an amazing event. It was a dream venue. See p. 94.) I also wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for supporting Living Luxe. We’re four issues in and it’s been such an honour to get to know most of our clients and contributors on a personal level. I am overwhelmed by all the support, kind words and the love that I feel every day throughout this journey. I have met so many wonderful readers—it was a pleasure meeting you at the Interior Design Show (see p. 92), and it is such a fun experience talking to people in stores where our magazine is sold. For me, starting anew is all about creating some wonderful synergies and amazing concepts I’m so looking forward to introducing to you. I am always thinking of how we can be better, so please connect with us and share your thoughts via social media. You can find us @livingluxemagazine. We’re so thrilled with the selection of stunning homes, inspirational stories and design advice in this issue. I know our features will resonate while you welcome in spring.

Herringbone Redux The beautiful configurations of Listone Giordano’s Biscuit series by Patricia Urquiola leave us speechless. From the creative mind of the sought-after Milanese designer, the series rethinks the traditional wood floor with rounded edges and puzzle-like configurations. Its “why didn’t I think of that” approach to herringbone is utterly refreshing and can be used as flooring or as a decorative wall treatment. The Biscuit series, sustainably fabricated in French thermo-treated oak with a multilayer birch plywood support, spells instant wow-factor for any room. Available at Marble Trend. marbletrend.ca.

now available in a luxurious velvet. This cushion-back sectional is designed for sink-in comfort. Its sleek lines make it an easy fit in many environs, both casual and elegant. Shown in Seoul Uniform. eq3.com.

9 Celebration’s in the air: We’ve landed in a new decade filled with heady possibilities. You might want to remind yourself or a loved one of the myriad options open to us when it comes to embarking on new journeys and seeing vistas in brave new ways. How about a classic 18-karat gold, diamond-rimmed Evil Eye pendant that promises protection and encourages you to look at the world in wide-eyed wonder? John Hardy’s hand-hammered sterling silver dot pendant, inspired by Bali’s full-moon ceremonies, is a wonderfully romantic mark for a new cycle. The notion of rebirth couldn’t be trumpeted any better than by a Fabergé egg around one’s neck. This miniature locket, featuring white diamonds, opens to reveal a four-leaf clover, a charming shot of good luck. Starbursts are synonymous with new excitement, and these magnificent dove earrings by Doron Paloma herald untold glamour. Or perhaps an earthier look is more your style: Misami diamond drops from the Ginko collection are all sensuality and romance—and ginko symbolizes longevity and endurance, perfect to start off a new journey. If artistic florals soothe your soul, you’ll adore the homage to Claude Monet in this 24-karat gold clasp enamel bangle by FreyWille. Or try a Hearts On Fire ring on for size if an engagement figures in your beginnings. It features a perfectly cut round centre diamond and would be perfectly presented in the Mr. and Mrs. ring box. Since this season is all about new directions, a Knar Signature gold arrow bangle will keep you on track. Or how about a bold Zancan necklace in the shape of a compass for the captain in your life? Finally, Fabergé’s Emotion ring, a virtual fireworks of the finest gems, creates a reminder of the brilliant times in store as we launch into this colourful new era.

But we also use natural sources like cartilage from the patient’s ear or ribcage.” For reduction rhinoplasty, the method of treatment is completely different. “Reduction rhinoplasty involves reshaping a nose and using files and chisels, among other tools, to reshape and restructure,” he says. When asked which procedure is easier, reduction or augmentation rhinoplasty, he had this to say: “In my practice, being able to provide a range of options to help my patients is my priority. I encourage everyone interested in rhinoplasty surgery to do their research before undergoing surgery. Rhinoplasty in particular is a very complex procedure that can dramatically improve someone’s facial appearance. You need to ensure that you choose a surgeon with the skill and experience that you require to achieve your goal.”

Contributing editor Janette Ewen remembers what it’s like to take a leap of faith. By Janette Ewen

JUMP FOR JOY Picture this: It’s early September and I’ve just started Grade 2—Mrs. Lavergne is my teacher. She has happy eyes, an excellent reading voice and the largest cabinet of scratch-and-sniff stickers I’ve ever seen. She asks me to be in charge of this cabinet and wipe the chalkboard every day. Life is good. I feel needed, challenged and optimistic about the year ahead. Every recess I run to the “big” swing set; it’s mostly for fourth and fifth graders. The seats—made of rubber—are hot to the touch. I don’t care. I like the sting. I feel tough. I like how high I can go—little legs pumping hard. It’s the day before class photos and I’m on my swing, going high, when I hear an older boy (the cute one with the blond hair and cowlick) say “she’s a flyer.” I feel proud and confident. “I can fly,” I know today is the day. My legs pump harder and faster than ever.

I waddle to the front of the line, blue Polly Flinders dress starched to perfection. “Step up, um…” I feel the confusion in the photographer’s

The Maida Family

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW Did you know there’s a lifespan on typical, cookie-cutter subdivision homes? Georgian Renovations has a new system that offers homeowners a reliable, stylish and affordable way to upgrade their abodes.

If you watch home renovation television shows, you know renos don’t always go as planned—in fact, there are a multitude of issues that could (and often do) go wrong. If it’s not unreliable contractors, it’s shoddy workmanship costing homeowners an incredible amount of time, stress and dollars. The thing is, more and more houses are aging, it’s harder to find a home in some of the more popular areas and homeowners are desperate for reliable renovation work. “More than 40 percent of homes in Ontario were built before 1980 and are now outdated—the average lifespan of a subdivision substandard homes that now need alteration, expansion or repair,” says Gene Maida, founder and president of Georgian Renovations. “Many of these structures can be worked with, but

into a modern, functional space using beautiful design and premium materials. We bring new solutions to old problems.” Not only is the service simple and fast for clients, it’s reliable— Georgian stands behind their work, and there’s more than 10,000 homes in their portfolio. “Homeowners book a consultation, choose a colour palette and style and we get going. There are production meetings along the way and a pre-delivery inspection at the end,” says Maida. “In the past, it was out with the old and in with the new. When families outgrew their homes or when major repairs were required, they sold and bought a new place, leapfrogging up the buyer ladder. We changed that—now families can make their present home their forever home that they’re never going to leave.”

they need improvements to bring them up to today’s building code standards and modern living standards. Homeowners are plagued with inexperienced contractors and seduced by cash deals. Customers want solutions, not Band-Aid renovations. Band-Aid renovations have gone the way of the plastic sofa covers.” That’s why Maida and his team at Georgian created a smarter way to renovate homes. The SmartReno offers customers a luxury experience that’s perfect for those in cookie-cutter homes showing wear and tear. “Assemblyline-type of production relied on quick stick construction, thin brick veneer, speedy drywall systems and poor-quality, prefabricated roof trusses, stairs and kitchen cabinets. Subdivision homes were built for speed, not quality or longevity,” Maida explains. The SmartReno offers homeowners predesigned packages perfect for updating typical subdivision homes. “We offer fixed-price, fullfloor renovation packages to suit popular subdivision floor plans, as well as bespoke custom solutions curated by our designers, in three styles—traditional, transitional and modern,” he says. “The traditional way of renovating a home can be complex. SmartReno starts with demolishing the full floor right down to the drywall. We then rebuild and transform the first floor

Architectural concrete

There are plenty of reasons why so many people opt for architectural, stamped concrete when it comes to landscaping, driveways, patios and pool areas, but one of the most compelling is that it’s the closest thing to natural stone—and that’s high praise for a poured construction material composed of cement and sand.

BEAUTY THAT LASTS Patterned Concrete has a long history of being the real thing–and the real thing is a work of art. By Lisa van de Geyn

Joe Guida, the president of Patterned Concrete, a North York-based company specializing in high-quality architectural concrete, has been in the business for more than 40 years. “Out of all the products on the market, concrete is the best choice. Natural stone has a place, but so does concrete. Not only does it outperform, it has impressive longevity, it’s low maintenance and installations are a work of art,” he says. Patterned Concrete has a remarkable history. The original owners registered the Patterned Concrete name in 1972, before there was even a big market for stamped concrete. The family, who had a background in concrete, started developing systems and tools to make the material look more like natural stone. Meanwhile, the Guida family

started in the concrete-installation business in the 1960s, and formed Tri-Con Concrete in 1981. It was during the boom in the 1980s that Patterned Concrete came into the picture. “A deal was made between Tri-Con and Patterned Concrete Industries and a new licensed contractor was formed in Toronto. “Having the background and experience, we had to go with the original name— Patterned Concrete,” Guida says, adding he bought the trademark in 2013. “Today, other companies use our brand name to describe their ‘patterned concrete’ finishes—what they’re referring to is the stamping. No other company has developed the tools, unique cuts and finishes we have. Patterned Concrete is who we are, it’s not what we do.” From the beginning, the company has been all about quality. “Imagine pouring what is known as regular grey concrete and in a few hours, it looks like stone. You better know what you’re doing,” he says. But it’s not just about the pouring—imprinting the concrete is only part of a finished installation. “The detailing and finesse work that’s done once the concrete has hardened is what makes a world of difference.” Guida says clients choose architectural concrete because it’s versatile, it offers a no-shine and non-slip finish, plus it’s easy to take care of. “It can also be custom. While the trend is generally for concrete to look as close to natural stone as possible, homeowners or designers can bring us their vision or pictures and, in most cases, we can do it.” Popular options include the look and feel of European cobblestone, herringbone patterns and sidewalk slate. “We are also using non-corrosive fibreglass rebar, salt-guard sealers, natural finishes such as GEMENTO and new modern-style imprinting tools,” says Guida. What’s more, concrete installations will go through generations. “It starts as one pour and ends up becoming part of the family’s memories; it’s something that never needs to be altered. It truly becomes part of the household.” 64

INDUSTRY EXPERT: Nancy Saavedra COMPANY NAME: Art Boulle Q: I’m considering installing pivot doors. Are there any misconceptions I should know about? And what’s trendy right now? A: Pivot doors are doors that aren’t installed on regular hinges. A pivot system is a revolutionary, patented hinge system that allows a door to be installed even after the floor has been finished. The technology is mortised in the floor and works for large and heavy doors up to 500 kilograms, something that regular hinges wouldn’t bear. It has a very elegant and easy opening that leaves a space between the door and the hinge, creating an almost magical opening—it looks like the door is floating on the floor. These doors are good for exteriors, they’re safe, durable and we can make them in any size, in all sorts of designs and in a mix of materials. Regardless of the weight of the door, they can be opened with the touch of a finger. At Art Boulle, pivot doors are not massproduced and they’re completely handmade. The sky is the limit in what we offer—all styles and materials can be done, including metal, wood, leather and copper. We’ve recently seen an increase in modern-style doors, but we still have plenty of customers who want something more classical, like French-inspired doors. Our clients want something that fits their style and home, but they also come in looking for advice, which we’re always delighted to provide. It’s important to consider that custom doors like ours take four to six months to design and manufacture, and once they arrive to your home, they can be installed very quickly.

Once you sleep on these sheets, it’s hard to go back and sleep on anything else.” While he’s proud of the store’s vast selection of high-end linens, Saini says it’s his staff’s expertise that’s key to the company’s success. “What sets David’s apart is customer service,” he says. “Our staff is very knowledgeable. Nothing can equate to experience when you’re selling high-end goods.” So much has changed since David’s Fine Linens launched more than 40 years ago. Today’s customers are looking for linens in white or grey—not groovy browns and oranges. And like all retail these days, much of their business is slowly migrating online. That said, there are plenty of things that haven’t changed—people still appreciate the finer things in life, and good customer service still goes a long way.

This was a brand-new endeavour for Le, who was in the legal field at the time. “It was my first project and I really knew nothing about the business, but I decided to take a risk. I hired two project managers and learned absolutely everything I could about the process,” she remembers. “The entire project took 18 months from start to finish and that’s when I fell in love with home design and homebuilding. I realized I could take something raw and create a home for a family. I also loved the challenges that were constantly arising from the day-today management of the projects.” The process also opened Le’s eyes to the fact that new builds and full renovations aren’t a piece of cake—they’re difficult to coordinate, time consuming and demanding, and they take incredible organization.

Four years after that first build, Le and her fiance, Kurtis Van Keulen (an architect), opened Mississauga, Ont.-based Brento Tile. The goal was simple—to simplify and revolutionize flooring. “There are so many aspects to homebuilding, but flooring is so important. It’s really what makes your house a home. People don’t look at baseboards, but they do notice the colour, texture, pattern and design of what’s on the floors, as well as the harmony of everything pulled together. That’s why we decided to start with this important component and branch out from there,” says Le. “People come to us with raw floorplans and we assist in putting together a cohesive look, whether it’s with the flooring, colours or accents.” Brento Tile started out as a one-stop shop for flooring, but that’s not all they do. PERFECT PATIOS Summer may be short, but you can make the most of the season by outfitting your outdoor living spaces, thanks to the folks at General Products. By Lisa van de Geyn

“Have a Patio Day” is part of Stuart Brown’s lexicon. He’s a selfproclaimed patiologist—a term he and the team at General Products coined to describe their expertise in all-things patio. It’s been 41 years since General Products opened its doors; the family business runs out of Richmond Hill, Ont., and Brown comes by the industry honestly. “My dad was involved in upholstery and indoor furniture, and we had a history in plastic and steel. General Products was formed when we decided to move to outdoor furniture by morphing plastics and steel into chairs, sofas and other pieces made for the backyard,” Brown says. “When we got into the industry four decades ago, the outdoor-furniture industry was very different—it was mainly glass and Werzlait

(tabletops that consisted of compressed board, resin and melamine on top). There also weren’t many specialty stores that focussed on full patio sets.” In the early days of General Products, Brown had the legs of patio sets made out of steel and he imported plastic chairs from Israel. Backyards weren’t the outdoor extension of the home they are today. “In the 1970s and 1980s, people would go outside and eat at their patio table, then go back inside. There wasn’t a lot of lounging outdoors,” says Brown. “Eventually, people began spending more time in their backyards, disconnecting from work and society. Today, more people are enjoying hours outside on their sectionals or daybeds. They’re putting in outdoor fireplaces, which extends evenings and seasons. The backyard is a more inviting place than it ever has been.” That’s why General Products uses the tagline, “Welcome To Your New Backyard.” These are now coveted spaces for sun-craved Canadians who are too often forced indoors by weather and gravitate outdoors when temperatures climb. “It’s a major change in lifestyle, and we provide everything clients need to make the most of their outdoor living spaces,” he says. The company carries nearly a dozen im-

MAKING IT WORK When Dr. Caplan was first called the “Hormone Doctor,” she was offended because she was so much more than that. Hormones are just one piece of the puzzle and represents only one facet of her treatment plan which is highly successful. She is leading the new wave of healthy aging. By Karine Ewart

“Oh my goodness—your skin looks amazing!” These were the first words out of my mouth when I sat down with Dr. Shari Caplan, MD, CCFP, FCFP, FAARM, to chat about her most recent offerings from her Toronto-based Integrative and Functional Medicine Clinic and Medi Spa. “Yes, I know, it’s Scarlet RF,” she said knowingly, confidently and slightly sheepishly. I met Dr. Caplan more than 20 years ago when she was doing obstetrics and gynaecology as a family health practitioner at Women’s College Hospital in Toronto. She delivered my four children (and once drove through a snowstorm to be there when she really didn’t have to). She has since evolved her practice to focus on Integrative and Functional Medicine—which bridges the gap between traditional and alternative medicine—and opened Vitality MD in 2013. It’s a semi-private healthcare facility that focuses on helping everyone—particularly women—age gracefully and naturally. (Full disclosure: I immediately signed up.) “My mother died of breast cancer at the age of 44 and the last thing I ever wanted to do was take hormones,” Dr. Caplan says. “But when I was in my mid-40s, all of a sudden I started having all of these perimenopausal symptoms—my energy was low, my cognitive functioning seemed to be suffering, I was gaining weight and I wasn’t feeling myself. At the same time, all of my patients of a similar age were telling me the same thing was happening to them.” Prior to her

experience, she admits she assumed people who complained of these issues weren’t eating or exercising properly. “But when it started happening to me and I knew I was eating and exercising right, I thought it must be hormones.” That’s what spurred her to change her career path and focus on bioidentical hormones, which in turn led her to learn about functional medicine. Not all hormones are the same. “What I learned was that natural progesterone was very different from the synthetic version and each carry their own risk and there are economic and political issues behind it all. I was very naive.” While she was on this professional learning journey, she also was given a personal challenge: Her husband, Dr. David Freedman, was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He was the one who encouraged her (he was her biggest cheerleader) to open Vitality MD and spent hours working on the design and marketing plans and had his hands in everything. He never stopped believing in her, and when he lost his battle to cancer in September 2019, Dr. Caplan resolved to continue his vision and ensure she was providing her patients with the most advanced technology in the industry. “Patients are very well educated today. There are so many podcasts and things online, so for me, it’s very

important to learn what’s on the cutting edge, but also to try things out myself. I would never recommend anything to my clientele that I haven’t tried myself.” And that brings us back to the Scarlet RF procedure: It’s “microneedling on steroids,” she says, it lifts, tightens and regenerates your skin with no surgery or downtime. I had my first session a few weeks ago and have already noticed the difference. The Medi Spa is also offering a new procedure that helps with libido. More on that next time.

DREAMLAND BY CAESERSTONE The collaboration between Caeserstone and designer Jonathan Adler was a stunning showstopper. In today’s climate where everything has to be an Instagrammable moment, it was so clever to transform traditional Caeserstone into an interactive fantasy space that visitors were only too excited to capture on social media. Typically associated with straight lines and sharp angles, the company really stepped out of the box in showcasing the versatility of quartz with curves, odd shapes and creative lighting effects. They also payed homage to the Roman port of Caesarea with the neo-classical columns. caesarstone.ca.

SHOWSTOPPERS Every year, IDS gets a little bigger and more fabulous, with fresh ideas, themes and, of course, the very latest trends and technology for the home. Designer and Living Luxe contributor Nadia Di Donato picks her five standout moments from this year’s show.

MONOGRAM HOME APPLIANCES It’s quite challenging to be a standout amongst all the kitchen brands showing at IDS, but this one caught my eye. Cooking at home is sexy, so why not showcase luxury appliances in glass cabinetry designed by PARTISANS? This company really lets their products speak for themselves. They’re innovative, sleek and futuristic. monogram.ca.

EAST VAN LIGHT As a designer, I am constantly in search of unique, unconventional products. This small artisan-style booth was a standout against the larger commercial brands with their new Hexagon customizable lighting collection. This one-of-a-kind pendant system is fresh and vibrant—it has a sleek design and the details of the edges and light inserts echoes the lost art of fine craftsmanship. It was impressive, especially showcased in combination with Modena Smart Home’s beautiful customizable switches. This booth really reflected the idea that you don’t have to be big to be great. eastvanlight.com.

PURE STAINLESS POOLS I recently completed the interior of a Miami Beach penthouse and I’m now working on the rooftop patio and pool design. This booth attracted my attention immediately as a solution to challenging pool installations. The simple and clean design takes a cutting-edge approach to traditional pool elements. The product is different and unique from a design and manufacturing standpoint. The off-site construction with onsite assembly makes it an ideal product for a 47th-floor rooftop oasis. purestainlesspools.com.

SMEG’S DOLCE & GABBANA APPLIANCE SERIES Sicilian aesthetics and state-of-the-art technology were a definite winning combination. I was recently in Sicily and this booth immediately jumped out at me with a familiarity of the traditional folk colours and patterns of the region. There was definitely a sophisticated feel too, which isn’t surprising, given how renowned Smeg and Dolce & Gabbana are in the industry. It really is time brands approached the kitchen with such flare. This fusion of style, art, fashion and design is a true reflection of modern-day mindset. I loved seeing the trending collaborations amongst the different genres of design. smeg.com.

Could there be a more perfect place than Toronto’s Casa Loma to celebrate Living Luxe’s new year, new decade party? With a whopping 350 wonderful contributors, partner clients, readers and very chic friends of the magazine dancing, sipping and nibbling the night away, there was no better way to kick off a stylish new era. From DJ Fizza to violinist Saraphina Violin, Liberty Entertainment Group pulled together an event that inspired amazing memories that will last long after this year is finished. Highlights included Kate Fresh and her divine macarons, JURA’s delicious coffee, Flowers Time and Engineered Arts, and of course, it was extra special to have one of Living Luxe’s dearest contributors, Dr. Philip Solomon, join in on the fun. So grateful to have everyone be part of this beautiful community.

If you watch Cheryl Hickey on television, you know she’s effervescent—a confident journalist who’s travelled the world interviewing the rich and famous. But what you might not know is that she’s just as vivacious one on one. The Cheryl who more than 3.8 million viewers watch on “ET Canada” each week is the same Cheryl you meet when she’s off camera. She’s one of those people who you instantly feel a connection with—she’s positive, down to earth, kind and funny, and her passion is utterly contagious. She possesses an incredible gift of gab—it’s one of the qualities that has made her shine while hosting the country’s most-watched entertainment news show since 2005, and it’s also a trait that makes her the perfect choice to host a brand-new home renovation show. HGTV Canada’s “Family Home Overhaul”—debuting in April—is a feel-good renovation series that sees the network’s top designers and contractors come together to give deserving homeowners the renovations and makeovers they desperately need. “This show has heart—I knew it would when I first learned about it,” says Hickey. “It’s all about family and community. We all know people who give and give—these are special people who continue to give, even when their homes are literally falling apart around them.” In “Family Home Overhaul,” participants are chosen based on nominations from families and friends via HGTV.ca. Homeowners meet Hickey and the makeover team, and they’re given a complete home overhaul—a top-to-bottom fix. What makes the series so heartwarming, though, are the homeowners’ stories. Hickey affectionately talks about one family—refugees who moved to Canada for a better life and are dedicated to helping other newcomers. “They saved and scrimped and did everything they could to escape the awful situation in their homeland. But the house they put their life savings into was in worse

She’s also an avid volunteer as an ambassador for Plan International Canada, SickKids and “as many women’s causes as I can support,” she says. She’s busy, but she’s humble about what’s on her plate. “I don’t make it work all the time. There are times when I have to focus more on my family, and times when I have to zone in on my work. Balance isn’t a good word,” she says. “Then there are times when life throws you curveballs and things get messy. I just always try to be present.” If all that wasn’t enough, Hickey is an entrepreneur. A few years later, she moved up the ranks and decided to take on the entertainment beat. When “ET Canada” came around, she was a natural fit. “I love to talk and interview people. I love real conversations. My job is all about the art of conversation.” Since landing the gig, she’s interviewed hordes of Hollywood A-listers and has appeared on numerous red carpets. It’s hard for her to name her favourite interviews, but there are two celebs who really made an impact. “Oprah—she’s a big deal. She’s an entrepreneur who brought wellness and spirituality to the forefront, and that’s so important. She’s also a good hugger,” she laughs. “George Clooney is another—he’s just so nice, gracious and cool.” When she’s not in front of the camera, Hickey’s life is full—she’s also a wife and the proud mom of two children, Jaxson, 10, and Nyla,

When Nadia Di Donato of NDDESIGN found the rare property on one of Miami Beach’s most exclusive streets, she immediately had a vision. Most of the neighbouring houses were oversized and traditional in style, but Di Donato wanted to build something different. Inspired by time spent in Los Angeles, she designed a modern house with clean lines, open spaces and lots of glass. “I wanted it to be more of a boutique-style smart home that was very

Nautical in Norfolk An airy new reno opens up a cozy cottage for family play all year long. By Lisa van de Geyn Photography by Nicole Aubrey

Painting the panelling and fireplace white definitely brightened the space, making it clean and crisp all year. The custom unit under the television was originally designed as a floor piece, but St. Amand decided to have it mounted, creating a floating cabinet.

Three hours southwest of Toronto on the shores of Lake Erie in Norfolk County, Turkey Point, Ont., is a summer hotspot for Ontarians—its two kilometres of sandy beaches are ideal for swimmers, and there’s plenty of fishing, camping and hiking in the hamlet. While most of designer Sarah St. Amand’s clients are in and around the Greater Toronto Area, she says she fell in love with the small beach town after a retired couple contacted her about renovating and redesigning their family cottage, located right on the canal. “They’ve had the cottage for more than 40 years and really wanted to create a place for their kids and grandchildren to migrate to in the summer,” says St. Amand. The 1,200-square-foot, three-bedroom home had never been renovated and the design had remained the same for most of the last four decades. “The space was quaint but awkward. The layout wasn’t working—it just wasn’t user-friendly. It also wasn’t equipped for year-round living, which was something that had been becoming increasingly important to the grandchildren, who enjoy spending winters cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in the area.” St. Amand and her team took their inspiration from the picturesque landscapes and decided to take a nautical approach when choosing the palette—she went with lots of bright white and navy hues. When it came to renovations, one of the biggest structural changes she made was having the ceiling in the kitchen raised to make the cottage seem more spacious, St. Amand explains. “We were able to keep the existing barn beam, and we painted the pine panelling and fireplace white for a clean look.”

117

She also opted to hang a map of the area from the 1970s above the fireplace to pay homage to the homeowner (a fisherman who enjoys cartography) and hung his prized collection of decoys. “It was important to him to keep these treasures, so we found the perfect spot for them where they don’t encroach on table space.” The main living areas in the cottage were in desperate need of a refresh. The kitchen was small and the layout made it difficult to comfortably maneuver. “The biggest challenges, though, were dealing with the food-storage and food-preparation problems—there was never enough space for either,” St. Amand says. “So we got creative. We put the microwave in a cabinet to get more counter space and added a pantry, which keeps the couple much more organized.” In the family room, St. Amand chose a large sectional to increase seating and covered it in a pet-friendly fabric for the four-legged members of the family. Yellow—a favourite colour of one of the homeowners—was added in the accent pillows, and it adds to the summery feel of the home. “The couple were shocked when they saw the finished space,” says St. Amand. “It had been so long since they made any substantial changes to the look and feel of the cottage, and they were so glad they finally decided to breathe new life into the space. It’s such a special place for their kids and grandchildren, and now the family can really call it home in every season.”

118

The bathroom may appear more modern than the rest of the home upon first glance, but that’s because there’s such a sharp contrast between the white and black accents St. Amand used. The wood around the mirror gives off that cottage feel while the hardware on the cupboards adds a bit of glamour.

LEFT: St. Amand went with off-white cabinetry, making them pop against the white backsplash and walls. The addition of wood throughout the home also makes an appearance in the kitchen—here it’s over the stove and underneath the countertops. BELOW: The dining area was opened up and St. Amand chose a stunning live-edge table as the room’s showpiece. She surprised the homeowner—an avid birdwatcher— with the framed heron painting, which works perfectly with the cottage’s nautical theme.

There have been a multitude of new builds and complete renovations in the Richvale neighbourhood of Richmond Hill, Ont., over the last several decades. West of Yonge Street and south of 16th Avenue, the area is teeming with both young and established families, diverse restaurants, plenty of shopping, schools and parks. “It’s a sought-after community because it offers the best of city conveniences, as well as proximity to Highway 407 and lots of green space,” says Iva Pelaic, a Torontobased real estate specialist and founder of GTA Modern Homes real estate services. When it came time for the family that

their dream home, they were set on living in Richvale. The couple has older sons and wanted a house big enough so that their chlidren could stay over and have their own private space. “The house was intended to provide them with space for their growing family—a place where their grandkids could stay and play,” says Marco Vieira, the principal of Epic Designs Inc., the Toronto-based architectural design firm that designed the house. “They wanted a contemporary house, an open floor plan where possible, while still keeping some separation in certain parts of the house. A home office was a must-have so that they could work from home and be easily

Great Expectations

Luxury rises to grand new heights in this heady Thornhill estate with a spectacular view. By Gobi Kim Photography by Tyler McKeag

The owner hand-selected the Christopher Guy furnishings to cap off the art deco-inspired design vision. Handwrought iron stairs gracefully rise to the second floor—a true floating staircase. estled in a secluded enclave

off one of Thornhill, Ont.’s most exclusive golf courses, this spectacular home on Riverside Drive conjures fantasies à la literary giant F. Scott Fitzgerald. “We came up with the idea of a French art deco influence, a nod to The Great Gatsby,” explains Hilda Mohseni, founder of One x One and the design visionary behind the estate. The glamorous novel was the perfect inspiration for the unmarred sweeping view of Toronto from the green, a rare treat for a house so close to the epicentre of the city. “The very open space is framed by tall windows. The backdrop of the forest plays a huge role—the vista is like a painting as you open the door. There’s a beautiful skyline as you look across,” she says. “It was so important for the client and for us as a design firm to achieve an experience with every space. Every corner is a vista, when you turn your head. We didn’t over-decorate; we didn’t want to take away from the architecture, the grandeur. Light plays a huge role, hence so many skylights.” “It’s spectacular,” says Jerry Hammond of Hammond International Properties, and he should know: Hammond is one of the top luxury real estate

boutique agencies in Canada with a select roster of local and international clients that demand the finest of the finest. The abode boasts two 11-foot-tall chandeliers that take centre stage, a glass-enclosed walk-in wine cellar on the main floor and the grand family room with a floor-to-ceiling fireplace encased in the finest Nero Marquina marble. Even the basement soars to 12 feet before opening up onto a backyard worthy of a lavish royal garden party (which also easily sets the scene for hours of idyllic family pool time). “Everything had to flow— there’s a fine line between doing a luxurious mansion without

it looking too over the top, too gaudy, too classical, too traditional,” says Mohseni emphatically. “It was so important to use deliberate finishes and deliberate colours to hit the note exactly on the theme that we wanted to implement. The entire house is white, but then there is the highgloss cabinetry to drive the art deco point forward.” The woodworking and the design of the coffered ceiling in the library (“probably my favourite room in the entire house,” says Mohseni) paid homage to that early 20th century style, and just as importantly, to old-world craftsmanship. “The contractors who worked on this project were artists,” she says. “A lot of heart and soul and old-style skill and artistry came into this house and

The Christopher Guy decor selected by the owner to adorn the estate is the finishing flourish that elevates the space to jaw-dropping perfection. “I fall in love with every single one of my projects. That’s what makes us different. It takes one designer and one client to bring the vision together and bring it to fruition,” says Mohseni. “At the end you walk through and say, ‘Oh my god, we hit it on the nail.’” In this case, a magical, exquisitely crafted nail.

Maya Eventov wants her work to be approachable. The artist tells the story of a painting that was hung in a hospital, and a patient who was particularly drawn to and affected by her work. “At first he could only see shadows and shapes. It’s so textural—he would touch the painting.” As his vision slowly came back, he often visited the painting, and was able to see more and more of it each day. This stuck with Eventov, who says her goal is for “people who have never bought art—never wanted art—to see my painting and have to have it.” Eventov’s work evokes joyfulness and is often reminiscent of the bold colours of the Mediterranean and scenes of her travels. Her approach to art stems from her upbringing in communist Russia, where original art was always embraced. She started painting at age six in the cultural mecca of Leningrad, when her mother recognized her passion

Matryoshka (Russian nesting dolls). She thought it was tedious work, but I thought they were lucky to be able to paint all day. She knew she had to put me in classes.” By the time she was in high school, Eventov was studying art seven days a week. “I identify myself as attached to my pencil or brush,” says Eventov. “I can’t see myself without it. It’s just who I am, and the more I was doing it, the more it became who I am.” It was an eye-opener for Eventov when she left her native land and arrived in Canada in the 1990s—the art scene was drastically different

135

“Floral Abstract Series,” 40 x 40 inches, acrylic on canvas.

136

It was hard to make a living as an artist in Canada, and most of her acquaintances encouraged her to change career paths and go into computers. Ever the artist, Eventov refused and continued to tend to her passion. She embraced the change of scenery, and says it gave her freedom to explore different subjects. It wasn’t long before the Toronto-based artist started showing her work in galleries. And bucking the trend, Eventov rejected the notion of allowing galleries to put her work on consignment. “I believed that if the gallery loved my work enough, they would pay me up front. And then they would work hard promoting it because they’d already invested money in my work.” To say her gamble paid off is an understatement. She has been exhibiting her work internationally for more than 20 years, with solo shows in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. Mississauga, Ont.’s popular Crescent Hill Gallery has been supporting Eventov’s work for two decades, and they continue to carry dozens of her paintings, including stunning floral abstracts, brilliant birch and pine trees, Mediterranean landscapes, abstract dancers and soft abstract nudes. Her work can be found in the personal collections of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien and former US President George W. Bush, as well as in many private and corporate collections worldwide. Eventov has witnessed the way the Canadian art market has changed—there’s a great pivot toward original art. “People who collect motivate me to paint,” she says. “The most important thing for me is that people who have seen my work could go into a gallery and know it’s my work.”

e all know how empowering great

fashion design is: Beyond its aesthetic ability to inspire, it helps us move through our lives more easily, joyfully and artfully. It’s also a fact that the best design—no matter how forward or avant-garde—has staying power, an increasingly appealing notion now that throwaway, fast fashion is so frowned upon. All this is precisely why Canada’s Marie Saint Pierre has not only survived, but has thrived for 32 years in a country where designers often struggle to make themselves heard. What’s more, Saint Pierre has established a luxury brand with a strong signature that gives women a modern, elegant edge in an era of style homogeny. I’ve followed the Montreal-born designer since she presented her first pret-a-porter collection in 1988. In 1995, she was the first Canadian to present a collection in Paris and, a year later, she showed at New York Fashion Week, less than 48 hours after giving birth to her daughter. Passionate and driven, with a meticulous eye for innovative construction and fabrication, at 58, Marie Saint Pierre is at the top of her game, and on a mission to continue catering to the legions of women who adore her designs. “Whether a woman is going to give a talk in New York, or going to space, or going to receive a medal, or get her kids married, or get married herself—whatever the occasion is, she feels she can rely on me,” Saint Pierre told me in 2017, on her company’s milestone 30th

Soothing Sanctuary

Exquisite, space-defining details come together perfectly for a master-bedroom oasis that’s both alluring and tranquil. By Lisa van de Geyn Photography by Stacey Brandford

The principal bedroom doesn’t often get the kind of attention the kitchen and main living areas receive, but this space is truly the sanctuary of the home. The bedroom is where you retreat— the place that allows you to fully rest and refresh that’s away from the hustle and bustle of the house. This is where you’re meant to feel completely relaxed. The homeowners of this serene space asked designer Alexandra Naranjo for an oasis. Last redecorated in 1992, the bedroom in the Toronto home wasn’t the haven the owners craved. A busy couple, the pair yearned for a quiet refuge where they could leave the day behind and recharge. Though Naranjo was content with the room’s existing configuration, she felt the space was in need of a few significant changes—including a lighter and much softer feel—that would really enhance the couple’s relaxation factor. “It was very dark for such a big room and the bed had been in

143

DO IT YOURSELF We asked for designer Alexandra Naranjo’s top must-haves for creating a serene bedroom. Here’s what she told us. Take care in your colour choice. Pick a palette you can live with. “I suggest a soft palette that’s calming,” she says. “The shade you introduce can then be used in different hues throughout the room.” Add quality window treatments. “Invest in drapes and make sure they block out the light so it doesn’t impact your sleep. Choose something elegant and lush but functional.” Bring in accent lighting. Chandeliers, floor lamps and table lights will brighten the space. Select peaceful imagery. “Whether you decide on art, a mural or pictures or patterns on wallpaper, make sure the image you choose brings you peace. A soothing abstract or soft, relaxing landscape are great choices.” Focus on bedding. “Go for sateen sheets, a duvet for sleeping with and a coverlet overtop,” says Naranjo, adding the coverlet looks fresh and crisp when the bed is made. “Add in a faux-fur throw at the end of the bed and you’ll create an incredibly luxe feel.”

Naranjo wanted the master ensuite to feel as calm and relaxing as the bedroom. The main architectural feature is the oval window, which was left undressed for optimum natural lighting. in most of her projects) commissioned a hand-painted custom landscape done by the same company the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, used for her renovation at the royal residence in Kensington Palace. She then had an installer frame it into the wall and added trim around the delicate piece. “It’s truly the focal point in the room—it’s all about the mural. I didn’t include any other art, except for some sculptural branches on another wall, because I didn’t want to take away from that gorgeous work.” The master ensuite wasn’t left behind in the redesign—Naranjo wanted a spa-like atmosphere to complement the calm feeling of the bedroom. She chose faux marble slabs of tile on the walls, a dual vanity, vessel sinks (for a clean, elegant look), a fuss-free mirror (there’s brass around the edges) and a spacious shower. The architectural feature in the room is the window, which Naranjo wanted to keep simple but impressive. “I didn’t want a predictable shape. This oval window brings in plenty of light and doesn’t need to be dressed.” Naranjo was ultimately successful in achieving the oasis her clients requested—the space is plush and cozy and has that five-star-hotel feel. “It’s a bedroom anyone would love relaxing in. I can only imagine the homeowners get a good night’s sleep in their tranquil space.”
