FDA Considers change on controversial policyl
The Food and Drug Administration introduced a draft guidance that recommends changing the lifetime ban on blood donations from gay men to a one-year deferral period. “I am encouraged that the FDA is moving forward with guidance that will revise the discriminatory lifetime ban on blood donations,” said Sen. Tammy Baldwin (above), D-Wis., the first openly gay senator in the U.S. “This is a first step in ending an outdated policy that is medically and scientifically unwarranted, but it doesn’t go far enough.”
States move to ban “conversion therapy”
The Oregon Senate passed legislation that would stop mental health care professionals from using “conversion therapy” on LGBT youth. The bill, which was approved by the Oregon House in March, now heads to the governor’s desk. Gov. Kate Brown, the nation’s first sitting LGBT governor, is expected to sign the bill. A Nevada Senate panel has also approved a similar bill. SB353 would prohibit social workers and psychotherapists from providing sexual conversion therapy to people under the age of 18 and will be voted on by the Senate sometime this year.
LGBT veterans honored with monument in national cemetery outside of chicago, illinois
The first federally approved monument that honors LGBT veterans was dedicated on Monday, May 25 – Memorial Day – at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois. “I love this nation more than anything,” said Stanley Jenczyk, a Vietnam War Navy veteran and junior board member of the Chicago Chapter of American Veterans for Equal Rights (AVER), who spearheaded
the efforts over the past four years to get approval for the monument. The monumner was made possible by the efforts of AVER and was approved last year by interim undersecretary for memorial affairs, Ronald E. Walters. It is intended to redress the history of disregard and disrespect for LGBT veterans with a lasting symbol of recognition.
virginia School system bans transgender discrimination
Virginia’s Fairfax County School Board, which is the largest school system in the state, voted 10-1 to add a clause to its nondiscrimination policy to include protections for transgender students, employees, and job applicants. “[W]e are hoping this will bring a new age of respect and valuing of transgender and gender-nonconforming students and employees,” said Ryan McElveen, the school board member who sponsored the measure.

First same-sex couple ties the knot in guam
U.S. State Department does not recognize transgender passports BuzzFeed News has confirmed a report in India that a U.S. consulate delayed processing a visa request from a transgender HIV activist, Amruta Alpesh Soni, because her passport lists her gender as “T” for transgender. A State Department spokesperson made a statement saying that anyone applying for a U.S. visa must declare themselves male or female on their application even if they have been
issued a passport with an alternative gender designation in their home country. India is presently the largest of a growing number of countries that allow people to identify as other than male and female on official documents, including Pakistan, Nepal, Australia, and Denmark, according to Richard Tom Koehler of the organization Transgender Europe.
Chief Judge Frances TydingcoGatewood declared Guam's ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional on June 5th, paving the way for couples wed. Marriages began at 8 a.m. on June 9th with Nikki Dismuke and Deasia Johnson becoming the first same-sex couple to tie the knot.
Kathleen M. Aguero and Loretta M. Pangelinan (above, right) – whose federal lawsuit win paved the way for gay marriages on the island – were the first to apply for a marriage license. The lawsuit was filed because of an existing law that restriced marriage to opposite sex couples.
supreme court of costa rica upholds ruling in LGBT discrimination case The Supreme Court of Costa Rica upheld a ruling that professional associations may not discriminate against people who are in samesex relationships. The lawsuit was brought after the same-sex partner of a member of Costa Rica’s Doctors and Surgeons Association was refused membership at recreational facilities owned by the association for the benefit of members and their families because the two weren’t married.
Presently, gays and lesbians cannot legally marry in Costa Rica or enter into civil partnerships. The association voluntarily updated its policy in February in response to the issues raised in the lawsuit so that the partners of its unmarried members, regardless of sexual orientation, can access its recreational facilities as long as they have been cohabiting for at least three years.

2015 LGBT NETWORK GALA A SMASHING SUCCESS This year’s 2015 LGBT Network Gala honored activists for their long history of making a difference for the rights of LGBT and working communities. The Gala was held at The Space at Westbury, a stunning concert and entertainment venue where The LGBT Network’s CEO David Kilmnick revealed plans for the highly anticipated Patchogue LGBT Community Center.
More than 350 guests joined with celebrities and top political and business leaders from Long Island and Queens praising The Network’s mission and work including Congressman Steve Israel, New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, and New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman to honor Jason Collins (left), former NBA player and the first publicly gay athlete to play in one of the four major pro sports, Stuart Appelbaum (above), President of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), and Julia Robinson, an emerging youth leader at Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth (LIGALY) dedicated to creating an inclusive and sustainable world for LGBT and ally youth. The future of the LGBT Network was highlighted by an impassioned speech from David Kilmnick that reflected on LIGALY's beginnings when

few believed the organization could survive and prosper in conservative suburban Long Island, to current times where The Network is working on it’s fifth and largest LGBT community center in Patchogue.
“By uniting together on this night we have honored three individuals who are leading the way in making positive changes for the LGBT community,” said David Kilmnick, Chief Executive Officer of The Network. “As the Network continues to create change and grow, we extend our deepest gratitude and thanks to all those who believe in our work and are committed to creating safer and more supportive spaces for LGBT youth, adults, families, seniors, and allies throughout Long Island and Queens.”
Hundreds of guests perused the exhibition space featuring the LGBT Network’s renowned Silent Auction featuring chic leather furniture, exclusive weekend getaway packages, wine tastings, gym memberships, and dinner and show tickets featuring the best of Long Island and Queens. All proceeds of the event support the mission and services of the Network. As the Long Island sun finally set and the stars began to shine, Grammy Winning Legend Thelma Houston ("Don't Leave Me This Way") was welcomed on the red carpet to Gala, where she performed a few of her hit songs, bringing guests to their feet before heading back out into the night.

LI Pride: Celebrating 25 Years
The Long Island Pride Parade traces its origins to over twenty-five years ago when Long Island Lesbian and Gay Pride Freedom Committee founders – Leah Gustavson, David Kilmnick, Cara Wilson and Steve Hanaghan – approached the Town of Huntington to grant a permit to hold the first Pride Parade. The request was denied by the town on the grounds that only “traditional” parades were allowed on Huntington’s streets. The

committee was represented by the ACLU and the matter was heard in a federal court on May 28, 1991. Judge Leonard D. Wexler ruled in favor of the committee and granted the parade permit. The first Long Island Pride Parade was held on June 9, 1991. Since that time, the Pride Parade has grown into one of the largest parades outside of New York City: community organizations, businesses, and school-based Gay-Straight

2015 Entertainment Amber
“This is Your Night” Amber realized early on that she had to compromise in order to get to where she wanted to be – but to not completely lose herself, she always tried to give her songs that special unconventional touch. She amassed an impassioned army of fans with 4 full length albums, 1 Remix album, 14 singles and a string of worldwide smash hits that. Amber's bright future has been buoyed by a history that saw her rise above the crowded and competitive ranks of clubland divas. She has racked up an impressive seven consecutive No. 1 dance singles and an additional 6 Top 10 dance hits. Many of them made it into the official Top 40 Billboard Charts. Her songs received many awards, have been featured on countless compilations, been licensed by motion pictures and TV series and been covered by an array of artists -she co-penned one track called "Bless you child" for Bette Midler's album release in 2000 and most notably Cher, whose rendition of "Love One Another" earned Amber a Grammy nomination in 2004 as a writer. Amber states that she loves a great challenge and believes not in resting on past laurels but giving each musical chapter 150%.

When Junior Vasquez’s remix of Aiden Leslie’s “Love to Hate You” - a remake of the Erasure song - ignited dance floors in 2009, it introduced singer Aiden Leslie as a formidable young talent. Media around the world dubbed him “one to look out for”. His latest music video “I Just Go” has garnered widespread critical attention with Sirius XM radio's Larry Flick dubbing it a"well deserved hit". “This track explores things we can all identify with...doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result”. It’s without a doubt one of the most vulnerable songs I’ve ever written” says Leslie.

Kelly Clarkson talks new equality-inspired anthem, gay bars and her ‘Kezbo’ following
an interview by Chris Azzopardi
Kelly Clarkson talks new equality-inspired anthem, gay bars and her ‘Kezbo’ following Before catapulting to pop stardom, Kelly Clarkson was one of us. In many ways, she still is. The original American Idol, who memorably erupted into waterworks when she won the first season of the reality show in 2002, wasn’t always able to muster the willpower she’s instilled in the gay community through her uncompromising persona and liberating pop anthems, including those on her latest album, Piece by Piece. That’s just the charm of Clarkson, who opens up in our new interview about overcoming teen inferiorities, diehard lesbian fans who call themselves “Kezbos,” driving Bette Midler to “suicide,” and that night she sipped some wine, felt “sad” for our generation and wrote a powerful song about it. OK, Kelly, take my hand. I wanna go back with you. The imagery! Tell me the moment in your career you first knew gay people worshipped at your altar. (Laughs) Oh my god – that’s amazing! It was the Breakaway World Tour (in 2005) – the first 22

photos courtesy of RCA Records tour for the Breakaway record – and it was so awesome. One girl on tour came up and just introduced herself and was like, “I’m a Kezbo,” and I was like, “What?!” She was like, “A Kezbo – your lesbian fans.” And I was like, “Wait – there’s enough of you to have a group? That’s amazing! Awesome! Go me!” And she was like, “Yeah, we just love you. We’re gonna bring you to the other side.” And I was like, “All right, well, keep trying!”
our lives are like, no matter what path we’re on, music is the one thing that connects us. I mean, I had so much fun at this club recently. It’s called G-A-Y – this club in London – and everybody knew all the words to every song. Even the new one! And they were gay and straight and lesbian – everybody was there. It didn’t matter, and it was just really cool. It was a cool event, and it was fun. And it’s what I love about music – that it doesn’t matter. That’s what connects us.
Then, on the same tour, I had this guy, and he was so funny! Because, you know I’m a huge fan of Bette Midler and have been since I saw For the Boys when I was a kid, and he’s like, “You’re our new Bette!” (Laughs) I was like, “You need to aim higher. Bette Midler just shot herself! I’m not that cool, but I will work on gaining the respect of that compliment.”
What was your very first time at a gay bar like? Oh gosh – that would’ve been in LA, and I was probably 22. I went with some of my friends and a couple of my gay friends, and they were like, “You’re gonna love this! But you’re gonna need to wear a hat.” They played “Since U Been Gone,” and it was so funny because nobody knew I was there. I had a blast!
Is it hard to fathom yourself a gay icon? I guess it’s hard to fathom you can be an icon in general. I don’t consider myself an icon at all, but no – I have a lot of gay and lesbian friends and they like my stuff, so I guess it’s not so hard for me to think (the gay community) might like my music. But I don’t know ... I’m not an icon. I’ve only been doing this for 13 years. You’ve gotta be doing it for a good 20 to gain that status. When it comes to your strong bond with the gay community, how do you explain that connection? I have a connection, but I don’t look at it differently. I don’t ever look at a fan as a gay fan or a lesbian fan or a straight fan – I don’t ever look at that. Fans are fans, and no matter what
The awesome thing, for girls especially: Because most gay bars that I’ve been to – and I guess I’ve been to four or five – are all gay men and not lesbians, and being a straight female, you don’t get hit on the whole time, you don’t get people grabbing you or, like, being gross. There’s no judgment, and it’s just fun. You’re not worried about going, “No, thank you, I can buy my own drinks.” It’s the most fun club and fun time you’ll ever have in your life. The song “Invincible” alludes to overcoming self-doubts and insecurities. In your own life, when did you most experience those hurdles, and when did you finally accept yourself for who you are?

In high school, and you know, I was having a hard time. I guess all people go through it – it’s just a different time period for all of us. When I was a sophomore in high school, it was the one time (in my life) I felt like I was insecure. It was just an awkward stage for me. Well, as was junior high, but I just wasn’t aware of it yet. (Laughs) I’ve always been different. I’ve never been the girl that has to feel like she has to get all dolled up every day. I’ve always been kind of a tomboy. I’ve always been very outspoken, and, you know, my mom is too. I don’t know any other way to be. It’s just my personality. In my sophomore year of high school, I got a little insecure about (my personality), because girls can be mean and I got the lead in this role in choir. No sophomore was ever supposed to get it, so people were just really mean about it. And, like, mean. Worse than the movie! (Laughs) It made me insecure, and not so much (in regard to) my music or as a singer or an artist – just me as a person. I was like, “Is there something wrong (with me)?” I would go, “But I think I’m a good friend.” That was the only time that I was really doubtful of my person. But I got over that real quick! Growing up in small-town Texas, when did you get your first taste of gay culture? Did you even know gay people then? Oh yeah. Yeah! Nobody was outspoken like they are now. I think it’s a more comfortable – well, I don’t know. A couple of friends of mine just recently came out to their parents and one was just about the most horrible situation ever. So I think that still happens, unfortunately. But when I was a kid, I had a couple of my friends in choir with me. I think everybody knew (they were gay), but it wasn’t talked about or anything. Honestly, I grew up in such a creative environment. Even in our choral group – even with my friends – nobody really talked about it, nobody was against or for it. There were no flags of any kind – of race, of who liked who. I feel like I grew up in a really incredibly good bubble. I never experienced people hating – no hate crimes or anything like that – until well into the industry. With Idol, people would say hateful things about

certain contestants on the show, and I was like, “What in the world?!” I, fortunately, grew up in a world where that wasn’t a huge issue. But you were raised Southern Baptist, a denomination that condemns homosexuality. What was the journey like to get to where you are now – a staunch supporter of gay marriage? At my church, whenever I did attend Sunday service, that was never talked about. I know that is what the doctrine of Southern Baptist is, but they also said don’t drink and dance, but we drank and danced! (Laughs) I don’t think I grew up in
I think it’s silly that we’re still talking about gay rights. I just live in this world where people are accepted, so it’s very hard for me to even realize that that still exists.
some hardcore community where people were like that. I grew up in a very accepting household. I was taught to accept everybody how they are, and I admire my mom for that. She’s never taught me hate. I gotta ask about your baby girl, River Rose. Because she’s magical. She’s a magical unicorn. You know, in some circles, the unicorn is a gay symbol. Oh, I didn’t know that! But I love it. That’s what I call my baby! Speaking of which, how might you and your hubby handle it if River turned out to be lesbian? Oh, I don’t care. I mean, here’s what I hope for her: I just hope she finds love. It took me a while, man. And there was a lot of heartache throughout those years. You know, as long as she’s happy, I don’t care either way, and neither does my husband. And we have two other kids as well, and we don’t care either way for all of them. If one of them were to come out to you, what would you say? I’d be like, “Awesome! When do we meet him or her?” Honestly, it’s so funny, it doesn’t even register in my world as different. I don’t know why. But yeah, it doesn’t. I’m glad it doesn’t! During the song “I Had a Dream,” which you wrote about setting an example for future generations, you say, “Spreading your legs instead of using your words.” Older generations often criticize the industry for peddling so much sex. When you look out at pop culture currently, where do you
stand concerning its use of sex? And how satisfied are you with the examples these artists are setting for people like your kids and future generations? There’s a reason why women have been revered as long as we have been – even back in the day most statues are of us; most paintings are of us – (and it’s because) we’re a beautiful form, and I get it. I get that that is sexy and I’m so in support of that. I love a sexy video. I don’t even mind raciness. I don’t mind that at all. I just mind when people use that as the entire basis of their career. The only reason that I say that is because I feel those people are short-sighting themselves. I’m like, “You’re far more talented than that.” Yes, you can be sexy and risqué, but some of these women have these amazing voices and these amazing ideals, and they have more to offer than just that. The song actually came about because I was sitting around with some friends – we were all drinking some wine – and I was like, “Man, when you were 10 were you not just so excited about our generation and what we were gonna accomplish?” And then you look now and we’re still talking about race and we’re still talking about equal rights for everyone – didn’t you think we’d be past that? Didn’t you think we’d be more? I ended up writing a song about that because it’s just kind of a sad thing. I just felt like our generation – I think we could’ve been more. It was just a sad moment for me, reflecting. Gosh. That’s real deep, Kelly. (Laughs) I can go dark real quick! LIVING OUT

Why was it important for you to include a gay couple getting engaged in the “Heartbeat Song” video? What’s funny is, I wasn’t even actually the one who picked all the people! Marc (Klasfeld), the director, and his team did. But it was funny, because I was doing an interview here in Nashville at one
the set! At first he thought it was part of the video. He didn’t get it at first, and that’s why he was like, “Are you for real? I don’t get it.” But it was the coolest thing that ended up happening, but none of that, honestly, was planned. It just kind of happened, and it was a beautiful thing.
of the radio stations and one of the DJs there was like, “I’m gonna be in your video tomorrow!” And I was like, “Whaaaat?” And he was like, “Yeah! I asked if I could bring my boyfriend and they said yes.”
And it’s sending an important message, don’t you think? I think it’s silly that we’re still talking about gay rights. I just live in this world where people are accepted, so it’s very hard for me to even realize that that still exists. It’s hard for me to wrap my brain around it. That (gay couple) was a no-brainer, and I didn’t even think, “Oh, I’m making a statement for gay rights.” I was making a statement for the loss of love and the hope that you can still find it, regardless of what form that comes in. It wasn’t a purposeful thing. Love is love in whatever relationship it may be in.
I don’t ever look at a fan as a gay fan or a lesbian fan or a straight fan – I don’t ever look at that.

Breakfast in Beverly Hills
There are many reasons that The Breakfast Club (Universal), the late John Hughes’ second film, remains so popular and beloved 30 years after its initial theatrical release. The story of five suburban high school students spending almost nine hours in detention on a Saturday (!) in the library at fictional Shermer High School, still rings true, striking a nerve in viewers in and out of high school.
The students – popular girl Claire (Molly Ringwald), jock/“sporto” Andy (Emilio Estevez), stoner/punk Bender (Judd Nelson in a careerdefining performance), nerd/brain Brian (Anthony Michael Hall) and weirdo Allison (Ally Sheedy) – represent the `80s social strata that still exists today. Over the course of the film they begin to open up to each other, slowly and reluctantly at first, and discover that they have more in common than they first thought possible. Under the watchful eye (and verbally abusive mouth) of Mr. Vernon (the late Paul Gleason), the quintet are given an essay assignment and forced to stay in their seats. Much to Vernon’s chagrin, his rules are bent and broken. Bullying awareness is at an alltime high now, and The Breakfast Club is a perfect microcosm of bullying at its root. Andy and Bender are both bullied at home, for different reasons, and naturally take it out on each other, as well as Brian. This is one of Hughes’ more insightful career moments. He also deftly handles the subjects of teen suicide,

sexuality and drug use. Hughes’ use of music (also essential in his Sixteen Candles and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off), is in full effect here. The Breakfast Club is an ensemble film in the truest sense, but by the end, you realize that it is method-actor Nelson’s movie. Even though he never quite achieved this level of performance again, he can take comfort in what he served up in The Breakfast Club. Blu-ray+DigitalHD bonus features include a pop-up trivia track, feature commentary by Hall and Nelson, a 12-part doc about the movie featuring cast and crew interviews titled Sincerely Yours and a featurette about the origins of the Brat Pack.

Reverse Heart Disease
– with Food! During the course of Bill Clinton's presidency, he was a walking billboard for “SAD,” the aptlynamed acronym for the Standard American Diet. The hamburgers, ribs, fried chicken and steaks he consumed were legend, to the point that Hillary had the White House cooking staff change the kinds of foods they served there to try and get her husband to at least eat healthy at home. Perhaps it was the food at home that had the President stop at fast food joints in the middle of his jogs around DC so he could become the butt of all those McDonald’s jokes – it was the only way he could get his unhealthy processed food and meat fix! Fast forward many years and several heart procedures to unclog arteries and prevent a fatal heart attack, and Clinton’s daughter Chelsea is married with a child. She, like all kids, wants to see her father stick around for a while. So she asked him to please get healthy in time for her wedding – and maybe shed a few pounds along the way before walking her down the aisle. He obliged, and in the process exceeded all his goals, dropping over twenty pounds and sparing himself from another heart incident, not through drugs or another medical procedure. He did it with food – by turning to a plant-based diet. Bill Clinton’s vegan diet is one of the more famous cases in recent years, but there are many others who have done the same thing,
and with very similar results. There is much to be said for eating a vegan or mostly vegan diet. The drug companies don’t necessarily want this to become common knowledge, but there is absolutely no more sure fire way to prevent and reverse heart disease than by consuming a plant-based diet. None. Very few of us think of food as having healing properties. We think of certain foods we must avoid, we think of food as poison and harmful and toxic, but to think of food actively doing good for our bodies? Of course it makes sense – what else is food ultimately for? But with all the bad food in our culture, it’s hard to shift the mindset. To be clear – it’s not just a matter of eliminating the bad stuff. You absolutely must be committed to filling your plate with lots of the good stuff. Vegetables, especially dark leafy greens, have a very high nutrient density – lots of nutrients contained within very few calories. Dr. Joel Fuhrman has an equation for this: H=N/C. Translation: “Your health is dependent on the nutrient-per-calorie density of your diet.” Micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, and
phytochemicals), essential to our health and wellbeing, are found in spades in plant-based foods – primarily vegetables (the green, leafy, and cruciferous kind are the best foods on the planet), followed by an array of colorful vegetables and fruits. The nutrients found in plant foods have been proven to reduce cholesterol (a major risk factor for heart disease), high blood pressure (a major risk factor for heart disease), and to actually clean the arteries of plaque and reverse atherosclerosis (which is heart disease), and to do so surprisingly quickly. Limited good fats, such as those you’d get from a handful of raw almonds, walnuts, or seeds, and the omega-3 fats found in oily fish, fish oil, and flaxseed, are also good for cardiovascular health. Round out your diet with a few helpings of beans, legumes, and 100% whole grains, and you’ve got the recipe for a heart that will last a very long lifetime. Dr. Fuhrman actually recommends a serious change in diet (you have to stick to it, of course!) over any invasive heart procedure, even when arteries are clogged and a heart attack is right around the corner! Bill Clinton’s second heart procedure, for instance, was the insertion of stents in his arteries that had become clogged again because of the previous bypass surgery. Surgery has risks that go beyond what happens in the moment on the operating table! Isn’t it comforting to know that you don’t need to go under the knife or take a mountain of pills to keep your heart healthy? Isn’t it comforting to know that all you need to keep a heart attack at bay can be found at your local farmer’s market? Now that’s what I call comfort food!

finance
Your credit score is a very important number that reflects your credit worthiness at any given point. Many of us know about it, but don’t fully understand how we get to this number. It is the key to your financial life, and is used by auto loan lenders, mortgage lenders, credit card companies, landlords, cell phone service providers, and new employers to evaluate your credit risk. Your Credit Score (also known as your FICO score) is impacted by the following:
35% Payment History 30% Amounts Owed 15% Length of Credit History 10% New Credit 10% Types of Credit Used Your credit score can range from 300 to 850. The average score for about 65% of Americans is between 650 and 750. The riskiest consumers have scores below 600. Generally, the higher your score is, the better your credit, and the more likely you are to receive the best interest rates available on loan products.
Improving Your Score If you want to improve your credit score, consider the following tips:
Payment History
New Credit • Shop for a loan within a focused period of time. • Apply for secured credit if you’ve had problems.
• Pay your bills on time.
• Check your credit report annually.
• Get current with missed payments.
• Don’t open new accounts rapidly if you’re new to credit.
• Understand that paying off or closing a delinquent won’t remove it from your report. • Contact your creditors or a credit counselor if you’re having trouble.
Types of Credit • Apply for and open accounts only as needed. • Have credit cards — but manage them responsibly or pay them off monthly! The best thing to do is only keep a balance of at most 2030% of the credit limit. For example, if you have a credit card with a $1,000 limit, don’t have a balance above $200-300 at any given time. • Remember that closing an account doesn’t make it go away and affects your credit score negatively.
Amounts owed • Keep balances low. • Pay off debt rather then moving it around. • Don’t close unused credit cards.

Solar energy
By Christina mathieson, leed ga
Solar For Your Home: How About A Second Opinion? (Psssst…..It’s not too late!) For the first time in forever, homeowners can choose how they power their homes. It’s a great feeling when you tell someone that they don’t have to pay the utility for their electricity anymore and you see that idea sinks in. The people I meet every day are afraid of their electric bills, not only because they seem to increase all the time, but because they honestly don’t know what they’re being charged for. “Going solar” means that you make your own electricity. Depending on the amount of power you use and the amount of roof space you have, it’s possible to make up to 110% of your annual electrical usage with the power of the sun and a quality Solar PV system. Technology allows us to be in constant contact with our friends and family, and because of that lots of people know what we all do for a living. Over the past five years, many of my friends have asked my opinion on “going solar” and I’ve been able to guide them through the process. Some houses just don’t have a good application because they’re facing the wrong direction or because there are obstructions (like trees or other houses) that block the sun from hitting their roofs at certain times of the day or times of the year. What if you don’t have a friend that works in solar? Well, I’m here to help.
Homeowners can install a rooftop Solar PV (Photovoltaic) System that will produce electricity to use in their homes. The system is installed with a “net meter” that allows you to sell back energy to the utility when you make more than your house is using. Whatever you don’t use gets “banked” for use later in the form of kilowatt hours. You can use the power at night or you can save it for the winter months when you produce less power 38

because the days are shorter. There’s no thought or work in it, it just happens automatically. Did anybody tell you that you could get one of these for free? They’re lying. Nothing is free. If you get nothing else out of this, remember this: Choose a real company. One that has been in business for a long time that can provide you with references. A lot of them. Check with the Better Business Bureau, your town’s building department or the Department of Consumer Affairs to see what experience they’ve had with the company that you’re considering. Get your warranty information in writing. You want solar PV modules that have a full 25 year warranty for performance. You can get that kind of warranty on your inverters and optimizers too! Just remember, a product warranty is not the same and warranties vary. You want an installation warranty from the contractor that also covers their workmanship. Don’t ever pick the cheapest contractor. Cheap is expensive. You want a company that is fully insured for liability, workers comp and disability (for their employees). You want them to make enough of a profit to stay in business to enforce their warranty. Quality and workmanship are very important. If you get a quote today and say it’s too high and they come back to you lowering their number by $3,000, they were fine with ripping you off before. That’s not cool. Make sure the company you choose does not subcontract their installations. You don’t want some fool installing a system that produces electricity on your house where your family lives. Make sure your electrician is licensed and make sure there are no hidden charges. Make sure that you get this in writing as part of your agreement. Even if you don’t choose SunPower modules, choose a SunPower dealer. SunPower modules are the best on the planet for many reasons, one of which is the training and certifications they require their dealers to have. Don’t let any fool install your solar system. The safety of your family is not for sale.
One of the most important things to know is exactly how much energy any given solar system will produce. That’s what we look at when we meet a customer who has quotes from other companies. Even if you pay for your solar system with money you’ve been hiding under the mattress, you need to know how much energy that system will produce. For example, Company “A” is offering you a payment of $159 a month and offsetting 90% of your annual electrical usage (also called “consumption). Company “B” is offering you a payment of $99 a month and offsetting 40% of your annual electrical usage. What does that mean? It means that you started out with an electric bill of about $177 a month. The solar from Company A will cost you $159 a month and you will still have an average monthly utility bill of $15 a month because you will remain connected to them. Everybody that doesn’t have a battery bank has to stay connected. Company A’s monthly plan for you totals $174 a month, just a tad lower than you pay now. The solar from company B will cost you $99 a month and offset only 40% of your usage, leaving you with an average monthly utility bill of $106 (the remaining sixty percent of the bill that the solar doesn’t cover). Company B’s monthly plan for you totals $205.00 and here’s the hook: When you lock in a payment for fifteen years or twenty years, whether you lease or finance the system, that means that portion of your bill won’t go up for the term of your loan or lease. The remaining portion of your bill, in Company B’s case 60%, which you still pay the utility for will continue to increase because let’s face it, nobody’s electric bills decrease over time. A well-trained solar sales specialist will help you understand that when
you buy a solar system (financed or purchased with that money from under the mattress), those payments go away. That’s a lot of free electricity. “Going solar” now and owning it is cheaper than staying with your utility and in most cases you can do it without any out of pocket expense. If your household pays Federal and New York State taxes via payroll deduction you’re eligible for tax credits that will offset about half of the cost of going solar. If someone comes knocking on your door offering you a free solar system and all you have to do is sign this thirtypage agreement to buy the power from them for twenty years slam the door. If you’ve already signed an agreement with one of these companies, but you’re not installed yet, get a second opinion from a real solar contractor before it’s too late. I’d like to say that while I do work for the best company on Long Island, I’m not trying to drum up business. We have a lot of very happy customers who refer us to their friends every day that keep us busy. As long as we keep giving them the best product, professional service and fair prices we’ll be just fine. To answer your question “what does she know about this and why should I believe her”, here you go. I’ve been in solar for five years. I’m the Chief Administrative Officer of SUNation Solar Systems, Inc. where I’ve been involved in hundreds of residential rooftop solar installations, both leased and purchased. I am a LEED Green Associate, I serve as the Secretary of the US Green Building Council Long Island’s Education Committee and most of all, I’ve been paying utility bills for over thirty years.
