LGBT NETWORK NEWS
The LGBT Network Celebrates 25 Years of Service and Advocacy for the LGBT Community Founded in 1993, the LGBT Network provides lifesaving services and programs for hundreds of thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people, as well as their families and support systems throughout Long Island and Queens. The LGBT Network was little more than a dream in the early 1990s when founder and President & CEO David Kilmnick created a curriculum designed to educate students about the experiences of LGBT youth for his Master of Social Work thesis project. Shortly after in 1995, Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth (LIGALY), Inc., the first organization of the LGBT Network, opened its first community center above a storefront in Bay Shore. By 2005, LIGALY had expanded to serve the LGBT community throughout their lifespan through what is now known as the LGBT Network. Twenty-five years later, the LGBT Network has grown to become one of the nation’s oldest and largest organizations serving LGBT youth, adults, seniors, families, and allies. It is the fifth largest LGBT community center organization in the country, and one of the few of its kind operating multiple service sites – a demonstration of the Network’s forward-thinking vision. Providing its groundbreaking service to the community at its four centers in Bay Shore, Woodbury, Sag Harbor, and Long Island City, Queens, the LGBT Network has changed the landscape for LGBT people in many ways. The LGBT Network has an impressive list of innovative programs and has introduced many “firsts” into the Long Island and Queens LGBT communities, and the nation. In 2001, the organization sparked a conversation about LGBT youth at high school proms by holding what became the first ever suburban LGBT youth prom in America. It garnered global media attention and helped shape the future of LGBT youth advocacy in our schools. The organization’s leadership and outreach at the time resulted in starting more than 100 GayStraight Alliance clubs in schools, creating safe spaces for LGBT youth, while building their leadership and advocacy skills. In later years, the LGBT Network organized countless rallies and protests to fight for the visibility and needs of LGBT people – organizing thousands to stand up for equality and justice for LGBT Americans. In 2004, the LGBT Network coordinated a caravan of hundreds of Long Islanders to visit town halls to request marriage licenses – building greater awareness about LGBT social justice. From 2005 through 2015, the organization experienced and sustained transformational growth. Innovative programs and services were added – an HIV outreach and testing program, services for older LGBT adults, expanded youth services, programs for LGBT-headed families and 4

LGBT NETWORK NEWS transgender services, among dozens more were implemented. This led to the proliferation of the LGBT Network’s community centers – Nassau County in 2011, East End in 2013, and Queens in 2015 – the only LGBT centers of their kind. At the same time, the LGBT Network’s voice grew, not only in the region, but across the country and the around the world. The organization expanded its advocacy efforts, both through policy work as well as its public relations and media messaging efforts – one of the ways the organization is known best. President & CEO David Kilmnick is a national thought leader often called upon to comment on LGBT issues. This advocacy frames messages the community is facing and provides an understanding of what is needed to achieve real equality and justice. The LGBT Network has helped change hearts and minds and build bridges with hundreds of thousands of people. The LGBT Network also advanced the overall visibility of the Long Island LGBT community through new partnerships and collaborations. In 2012, the organization took over the annual LI Pride Parade and revolutionized and reinvigorated the event with a move to Long Beach and a re-brand as “Pride on the Beach.” By turning the event from a one-day festival into a weekend-long celebration, the LGBT Network tripled attendance and welcomed an international audience to Long Island, spurring tourism and driving economic development. Today, the LGBT Network is poised to meet the needs of the LGBT community for the next 25 years and beyond. In the next year, the Network will be opening new, larger facilities in Nassau and Suffolk that will be able to provide more programs to more people in more communities. Construction will begin on the new development of affordable, inclusive senior housing in Bay Shore. The LGBT Network continues to be a voice for the LGBT community and is on the forefront of tackling bigotry and hatred, leading the way to an America that is just, equal, and affords opportunity to all.

CAMPAIGN SIGNS DEFACED WITH ANTI-GAY LANGUAGE APPEAR ALL OVER SUFFOLK COUNTY LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK—In late October David Kilmnick, President/ CEO of LGBT Network called on Suffolk County District Attorney Tim Sini and Suffolk County Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart to launch an investigation into campaign signs for Perry Gershon that had been defaced throughout Suffolk County with anti-gay rhetoric. The signs for the challenger in the 1st Congressional District read “Baby Killer” on top and “Gay Lover” below Mr. Gershon’s name in an apparent attempt to win support for Congressman Lee Zeldin. Kilmnick also called on Congressman Zeldin to publicly denounce the hateful signs and demand that his campaign staff and supporters cease this dangerous tactic of spreading hate rhetoric and help to remove every single one of them throughout the 1st Congressional district.
KELLY WILL REINSTATE PROTECTIONS FOR LGBT STATE WORKERS IN KANSAS (JONATHAN SHORMAN)—Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender state employees across Kansas will again have protections from on-the-job discrimination once Democrat Laura Kelly becomes governor. Kelly on Thursday reaffirmed plans to reinstate an executive order providing a protection from discrimination that former Gov. Sam Brownback rescinded in 2015. The order, first put in place by Democratic Gov. Kathleen Sebelius in 2007, prohibited harassment, firing or discrimination against state workers based on sexual orientation or gender identity. “I am planning to actually have an executive order drafted before I take office” to take action as soon as possible, Kelly said.
David Kilmnick, LGBT Network President/CEO issued the following statement. “Supporters of Republican Congressman Lee Zeldin have shown their true colors by defacing lawn signs with anti-gay rhetoric. We are not even 72 hours removed from the deadliest anti-Semitic attacks in American history on the Jewish community and it is unconscionable that these signs displaying hate toward the LGBT community would appear throughout Suffolk County. This incident continues an onslaught by Republican candidates on the LGBT community over the past few months. It is imperative that Congressman Zeldin immediately denounce these hate filled signs and immediately cease this tactic that incites violence and results in people being hurt and killed. “With this past weekend’s horrific and frightening tragedy at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, we must take extra precaution to protect all our families, especially with all the hate that is being spewed from President Trump and supporters of Congressman Lee Zeldin. We are requesting increased patrols at all of LGBT Network’s community centers on Long Island in Bay Shore, Sag Harbor and Woodbury and for the Suffolk County Police Commissioner and Suffolk County DA’s office to launch an investigation into these hate crimes. “There’s been a call to tone down the rhetoric; that’s not enough. It must stop altogether. Hate breeds violence and kills and we are better than that as a country. I am hopeful that in a week we will use all the anger and fear we have and speak with our voices and change this nation around for the better with a powerful message that hate has no place in our country.”
Kelly, who defeated Republican Kris Kobach on Tuesday, made the remarks in a wide-ranging news conference at the Kansas Capitol that touched on LGBT rights, foster care and her approach to filling the new administration. At the national level, Kansas City-area voters elected Sharice Davids to Congress. Davids will be the state’s first openly LGBT member of Congress, and the first Native American woman to serve in Congress, along with New Mexico’s Deb Haaland. Kelly also said that if it is possible, she will direct the state to require adoption agencies with state contracts to not discriminate against LGBT couples and individuals. Kelly will become governor on Jan. 14. In the run up to her inauguration, she will need to name cabinet secretaries and other administration officials.

LGBT+ CANDIDATES MAKE GAINS IN U.S. ELECTIONS (Thomson Reuters Foundation)—More LGBT+ candidates won in the U.S. midterm elections than ever before - and gender or sexual orientation was less of an issue than ever before, too, experts said. Six new gay legislators joined the U.S. House of Representatives taking the total to seven; Jared Polis became the nation’s first openly gay governor in Colorado, and Tammy Baldwin, the first openly gay senator, was re-elected. But their sexual identities played less of a role than more traditional political factors like their party affiliation or their stand on hot issues such as immigration, taxes and the polices of President Donald Trump, experts said. “These candidates are increasingly being viewed the same as any other candidate for the most part,” said Daniel Lewis, an associate professor of political science at Siena College who has studied the issue. One race still up in the air, a U.S. Senate seat in Arizona, is not likely to be decided by voters’ feelings about Democrat Kyrsten Sinema’s openness about her bisexuality, said longtime Arizona political consultant Stan Barnes.

“It never came up. I never heard it in a coffee shop. I never saw it online,” he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. “Whatever there used to be in terms of oxygen in the room for this kind of thing, it seems to have disappeared in Arizona, and we’re all for the better because of it.” Still, in some races, especially in conservative states, candidates – transgender ones in particular - faced attacks because of their gender or sexual orientation, Sean Meloy, senior political director of LGBTQ Victory Fund, said. “It wasn’t an issue unless their opponents made it an issue,” said Meloy, whose nonpartisan group supports openly gay candidates. “Voters find the candidates’ openness to be refreshing.” Altogether, 132 of the 225 candidates the Victory Fund endorsed won their races, including one Republican state legislator. The rest were Democrats Transgender candidates also had a big night, even if Christine Hallquist failed in her high-profile bid to become governor of Vermont. Voters in about half the U.S. states also held referendums on election day, with neighboring Massachusetts becoming the first state to vote to support of a law protecting transgender people from discrimination in public places. In another sign of change, County Clerk Kim Davis, who gained notoriety for refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses in a deeply conservative part of Kentucky, lost to Democrat Elwood Caudill Jr. “Kim Davis shows how far the country has come on same sex marriage particularly,” Lewis said.

SCOTLAND WANTS SCHOOLS TO TEACH LGBT+ ISSUES IN 'WORLD FIRST' (Thomson Reuters Foundation)—Scotland is making it mandatory for government schools to teach LGBT+ issues in a move aimed at tackling homophobia and discrimination that it says is a global first. The government said schools would be required to adopt an “LGBT+ inclusive” curriculum, including tackling homophobia, biphobia and transphobia and promoting awareness of the history of LGBT+ movements. “Scotland will become the first country in the world to have LGBTI inclusive education embedded in the curriculum,” said a statement released on Thursday. Deputy First Minister John Swinney added that it was “vital the curriculum is as diverse as the young people who learn in our schools”. Campaigners said the move sent a “strong and clear message” that LGBT+ pupils were valued in Scotland. “This is a monumental victory for our campaign, and a historic moment,” Jordan Daly of the Time for Inclusive Education Campaign, which had lobbied for the change, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. “This sends a strong and clear message to LGBTI young people that they are valued here in Scotland.” More than 40 percent of Scottish LGBT+ students said they had not been taught about issues concerning sexuality, according to a 2017 survey from British campaign group Stonewall. Just 22 percent had learned about safe sex in relation to same-sex relationships, the study found. “Under these new proposals, teachers will have access to the resources and training they need to create more inclusive learning environments and better support LGBT students,” said Colin Macfarlane, director of Stonewall Scotland. “In schools that teach about LGBT issues, LGBT young people are more likely to feel welcomed, safe and accepted.”
'I HAD SUICIDAL THOUGHTS': GAY LEBANESE SPEAK OUT AGAINST CONVERSION THERAPY (Thomson Reuters Foundation)—Doctors in Lebanon warned about the dangers of gay conversion therapy, saying homosexuality is not a disease - a common misconception in the Arab country. The Lebanese Medical Association for Sexual Health (LebMASH) hosted a conference in Beirut where leading doctors said that the controversial treatment, which claims to help gay people become straight, can cause suicidal thoughts and depression. “Conversion therapy is happening in Lebanon and some people are still falling for old ideas that homosexuality is a mental illness,” said Omar Fattal, co-founder of LebMash, which is made up of health professionals based in Lebanon and North America. “Attempts to change sexual orientation should be banned,” Fattal, a psychiatrist, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation by phone from New York. The call for reform comes at a time when legislative change is gathering speed around the world, with New Zealand, Australia and Britain all considering laws against the practice, which can involve electric shocks and hormone therapy. Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) people face persecution in many countries in the Middle East, where some risk fines, jail and even death. Social exclusion and abuse are common. An upsurge in LGBT+ activism has led to “enormous advances” in the Middle East and Lebanon is on the cusp on change, campaigners said last month. A Lebanese district court of appeal ruled in July that same-sex relationships were not illegal, challenging Article 534 of the penal code which outlaws “sexual intercourse contrary to nature,” punishable by up to one year in jail. Omar, a 28-year-old Lebanese man who declined to give his full name, said his Christian family sent him to a psychologist who convinced his parents that therapy could make him straight. “That is what really harmed me the most - living in this in- between. Thinking I could change but I knew I couldn’t,” he said by phone from the United States where he now lives. When he was 15, his father offered to pay a woman to have sex with him, he said. “He thought that could change me,” he said. “I had suicidal thoughts - and when I said that to my dad, he expressed a sort of relief if I would commit suicide to relieve the shame on the family.”

LGBT+ PEOPLE ERASED FROM BOOKS IN RUSSIA WITH 'GAY PROPAGANDA' LAW (Thomson Reuters Foundation)—“Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls”, a bestselling children’s book featuring 100 stories of prominent women, was published in Russia this year - but with one story missing. Liza Lazerson, a feminist blogger who owns a copy, said she was surprised to see that while the cover promised 100 stories the book contained only 99 and one blank page - supposedly for the reader to add their own.
U.S. fantasy author Victoria Schwab said the publishing house Rosman last year edited an LGBT+ storyline out of the Russian edition of one of her Shades of Magic novels. “They redacted the entire queer plot without permission,” she said on Twitter last year. A spokeswoman for Rosman declined to comment on its editing of LGBT+ content. The publisher previously told Echo of Moscow radio station that just one scene, rather the entire plot, was cut and that Russian publishers “are often forced to resort to this kind of editing”.
“But then a follower sent me a photo of Coy Mathis’s story from the French edition,” Lazerson, who is based in Moscow, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in written comments. Under the current laws, publishers can Mathis, an 11-year-old transgender girl either remove LGBT+ content from books from the United States, won a landmark aimed at children and teenagers, or victory in a 2013 case against her mark them as appropriate for audiences school allowing her to use the girl’s over 18. MEN SUSPECTED OF 'BEING GAY' IN ZANZIBAR RELEASED ON BAIL
(Thomson Reuters Foundation)—Ten men arrested for being involved in homosexual activity in Zanzibar were released on bail on Thursday, said a senior police official and their lawyer, adding that the incident was still being investigated and the men could be charged in the future. Homosexual acts are illegal in Tanzania and its Indian Ocean archipelago of Zanzibar. Male offenders can face up to 25 years in jail on the tropical island which draws hundreds of thousands of tourists to its palm-fringed beaches annually. The men were arrested when police raided a party at a beach resort on Zanzibar’s main island Unguja following a tip-off that a gay marriage was taking place. “We have been investigating this case as it was reported to us, but we have so far found no evidence of unlawful acts so we are releasing all the men,” said Suleiman Hassan, Unguja South’s regional police commander. “We are however continuing our investigation and if we find evidence, they could be rearrested and charged,” he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation by phone from Unguja. The arrests come just days after a senior government official in Tanzania’s main city Dar es Salaam called on the public to report the names of suspected homosexual people for arrest - sparking fear and panic within the LGBT+ community. The planned anti-gay campaign prompted the European Union to recall its envoy in Tanzania as it reviews relations with the east African nation, and also sparked the United States to warn its citizens to be cautious of Tanzania’s laws on homosexuality. A lawyer representing the 10 men confirmed they had been released without charges, but said that case was far from over. “I have dealt with many such cases and given the high level of homophobia in the country, I don’t think this will be the end for my clients,” said the lawyer, who did not wish to disclose his name fearing for his own security. OUT FRONT
They will rock y o u an inter view with Bohemian Rhapsody stars Rami Malek, Joseph Mazzello and Gwilym Lee

By Gregg Shapiro
First things first, for all of those concerned about the way that Freddie Mercury’s homosexuality is depicted in the Bryan Singer’s Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, you can relax. From the minute you first see Mercury, played brilliantly by Rami Malek (complete with prosthetic teeth), there is no doubt that the king of Queen was, in fact, a queen. Yes, his relationship with “fiancée” Mary Austin (Lucy Boynton) gets a fair amount of screen time. But, so do his same-sex attractions, from being cruised by a trucker outside of a men’s room to his relationships with manager Paul (Allen Leech) and later his lover Jim (Aaron McCusker).
Gregg Shapiro: I’d like to begin by getting the obvious questions out of the way first. Would you each please name your favorite Queen song and favorite Queen album? Jospeh Mazzello: “Somebody To Love” is my all-time favorite, and this is a boring answer by A Night at the Opera is such a masterpiece that, all told, I’d have to say it’s my favorite album.
Gwilym Lee: Yeah, probably the same. But I really like Queen one, the first album, just because you hear them working out who they really are. You hear them as a really young, slightly naïve band that sounds a lot like other bands of that time because they’re still trying Now that that’s settled, it’s safe to say that, as biopics go, Bohemian to find their unique sound. There’s a lot of Led Zeppelin influence. But Rhapsody does a respectable job of telling both Mercury’s story there’s something quite pure about it as a rock band. and giving the audience insight into the history of the band itself. The backstory of “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “We Will Rock You” Rami Malek: As an album cover, maybe to flip this a little bit, I like are worth the price of admission alone. I had the honor speaking News of the World. to Malek, as well as Joseph Mazzello and Gwilym Lee (who play GS: The robot! Queen band members John Deacon and Brian May, respectively) RM: Yes, the robot, which they’re currently touring with. We watched while they were in Miami shortly before the movie opened in theaters so much archival footage and to hear them talk about “We Will in November 2018. Rock You” and “We Are The Champions” (both from News of the World) as something they always thought about as a pair, and a true audience participation song that features so heavily in the film; I’ve got to pay homage to that.
GS: Yes, there’s that great scene in the studio where we see the genesis of the song. Prior to making Bohemian Rhapsody, where did Queen rank on each of your lists of favorite bands? GL: It’s pretty high up there. Their songs are so universal. You hear them everywhere growing up. Sometimes you have to remind yourself that they wrote the songs that they did. I think people are going to watch this film and be shocked to learn, oh, they wrote that one, as well. What’s been lovely about doing this project is going back to the origins of their songs. Seeing how they evolved and the imagination that it took to come up with such unique songs. JM: I made a little student film when I was in high school and I put “Another One Bites the Dust” at the end of it over the credits. It was like “final cut one” or something. Then Queen just started popping up for me. I directed a film and everyday before going to the set, 30

to pump myself up I’d listen to “Somebody to Love”. Then it was in college where I feel like I found a new level of appreciation for them and I became a Greatest Hits fan. Every new song I heard by them was my new favorite song. Doing this movie changed everything. There were songs I didn’t think about too much or seemed like one of their mediocre songs. When you learn how to play it, the intent behind it, why they wrote it, how all four of them wrote hits – when you get all of that knowledge it takes on a whole new meaning to you. I literally walked in the room singing. GS: Yes, I heard you singing “Somebody To Love”. RM: That doesn’t get old. JM / GL / RM: [all laugh] RM: No, no. We love it. We got this question on set a lot. We’d be playing a song, take after take, by the end of the day…I was a production assistant on a music video once where I was like, “If I ever hear that song again, I’m going to do bad things”. But that never happens with Queen. Collectively we’ve all said this without talking at one point I saw in the script, oh he’s playing upside down as well. about it. We’ve been listening to Queen non-stop in a way that some I felt like, “If you’re going to make my story from his point of view, I’m might think is odd or some might think is totally understandable. going to throw everything at you”. GS: That speaks to the power of the music. GL: I played a little bit of acoustic guitar, but nothing to the level of RM: It does. Hearing Bowie with Queen and Freddie doing those Brian May’s genius. We all put in a lot of work. We got grafted pretty kinds of operatic warm-ups that he ended up incorporating into the hard trying to play our instruments. music was revolutionary to me. Then you get involved in the story GS: Joseph and Gwilym, what were the challenges of playing living behind the making of “Under Pressure” and how things come about people, as in the case of John Deacon and Brian May, respectively? with them. How inspired and spontaneous they were together is JM: It literally never leaves your mind every time you play a real person. something I find so fascinating. As an actor, you want to go into any job giving it your absolute all JM: After I was done shooting, I was like “What songs didn’t we and everything. It just feels like there’s this extra motivation when you cover? What songs didn’t I get to know?” That was the rabbit-hole I have this intense responsibility to the actual person you’re playing. To went down. You’re loving so much of it that you want to learn more their family and, in this job, to the Queen fan-base, which is massive. and more and be able to take it in as a fan of the music rather than We hear from them all the time, they’re so invested in this. Every day having the responsibility of performing it. you walk on set, it doesn’t matter if you’re tired or what’s going on in your personal life, you always keep that in the forefront of your mind and it focuses you in in a way you can’t even imagine. Should You Take Legal Action Against Your Medical Provider? Patients place considerable trust in their doctors, specialists, and nurses. Although healthcare providers are highly trained and the medical industry is regulated, countless medical mistakes occur every year. In fact, the 3rd leading cause of death in the U.S. is medical negligence! Medical malpractice lawyers are dedicated individuals who seek to hold negligent healthcare providers accountable for their actions. However, the decision to take legal action against a doctor should not be taken lightly. If you’re a patient who has been harmed, you can count on your experienced medical malpractice attorney to provide the sound legal guidance you need to make a decision.
Getting a Second Opinion
Sometimes, medical treatments simply don’t work as well as a patient hopes they will. A poor health outcome doesn’t automatically mean that the doctor was negligent, but it is a good idea to be a proactive patient by seeking a second opinion from another medical provider. Be sure to have your medical records transferred to the second provider’s office. Or, better yet, obtain a copy of your records and bring them with you. If you have any test results or imaging scans, bring those with you also. Plan to ask plenty of questions and take notes about whether the diagnosis you originally received might have been inaccurate or whether the treatment was inappropriate.
Establishing the Elements of Medical Malpractice
If you have suffered a harmful, unanticipated outcome after medical treatment, it may be time to consult a lawyer about possible legal action. Your attorney will review your case, including all relevant medical records, and also have them reviewed by medical experts, to determine if all of the elements of medical malpractice are present. These elements are: • A doctor-patient relationship existed. • Your doctor gave you sub-standard care. • The sub-standard care caused your injuries. • You sustained damages because of the doctor’s negligence.
Understanding the Legal Proceedings
If your lawyer finds both a legal and medical basis for a lawsuit exists, it is your decision to move forward. For many patients, legal action allows them to pay their medical bills and meet their future care needs. But it’s important to understand that not all lawsuits are successful. Hiring the right medical malpractice attorney can make all the difference. At Pegalis & Erickson, LLC, we understand how difficult it can be to make legal decisions in the aftermath of a major injury or illness. Our medical malpractice attorneys offer effective legal advocacy services that can help your family move forward. Call us at (516) 684-2900 or (718) 567- 7171 today to request a free consultation.

If you make plans to go to see a movie in early November 2018, you will have your pick of several titles featuring queer characters, including Yen Tan’s brilliant and devastating 1985 and Melissa McCarthy playing gay in Can You Ever Forgive Me. The overt queerness of A Star Is Born is either the most calculated move in recent memory or a love letter to gay fans. Yes, Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand are beloved by the LGBTQ community (and Garland’s A Star Is Born was directed by a gay man), but the new version, directed and co-written by Bradley Cooper is the gayest of all. You can definitely hear it on the A Star Is Born Soundtrack (Interscope). In the movie, Alli (Lady Gaga) is a singer in a drag bar. Her “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” warm-up snippet (a nod to Garland) and goosebump-inducing rendition of “La Vie En Rose” (introduced by RuPaul’s Drag Race vet Shangela) are as gay as you can get. The remaining Gaga tunes on the soundtrack that are duets with Cooper, including those co-written by her such as “Shallow”, “I Don’t Know What Love Is” and “Music To My Eyes”, are all solid numbers. Gaga’s solos – “Look What I Found”, “Always Remember Us This Way”, “Is That All Right”, “Before I Cry”, “I’ll Never Love Again” and even “Hair Body Face”, are welcome additions to her canon. Cooper holds his own alongside Gaga (far better than Kris Kristofferson did with Streisand), and the songs he co-wrote with (Willie’s son) Lukas Nelson, fit his character’s modern country persona. Comprised of original Queen and Smile (pre-Queen band) recordings, Bohemian Rhapsody: The Original Soundtrack (Hollywood) is bound to appeal to fans of Queen and the movie (in which Rami Malek does a fantastic job of portraying Freddie Mercury) in equal measure. If for no other

reason than to have the Queen version of the “20th Century Fox Fanfare” intro, the soundtrack is worth hearing for the “revisited” version of Smile’s “Doing All Right”, the “movie mix” of “We Will Rock You”, the Live Aid renditions of “Radio Gaga” and “Bohemian Rhapsody”, the live Rock in Rio Festival version of “Love of My Life”, as well as the “Don’t Stop Me Now…revisited”, to mention a few. Composer Daniel Hart, who has provided the score for a number of David Lowery films, reunites with the director for The Old Man & The Gun. Hart’s score for The Old Man & The Gun (Varese Sarabande), a movie which has been described as a “love letter to the 1970s”, perfectly captures both the mood of the era and the film itself. The inclusion of The Kinks’ “Lola” and Scott Walker’s “30th Century Man” also help to set the period tone. There was so much to admire and enjoy about the action flick Baby Driver, Edgar Wright’s 2017 Ansel Elgort vehicle. In addition to starring the exquisite Elgort, the movie was funny and fast-paced and thrilling, and featured a soundtrack of classic tunes from a variety of eras. Baby Driver – Volume 2: The Score for a Score (30th Century/Columbia), expands on the concept, incorporating Steven Price’s score, dialogue excerpts and song selections by Run The Jewels, Boards of Canada, The Foundations, Kid Koala and others. Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland’s Rick and Morty, about the unusual partnership of grandfather Rick and teenaged grandson Morty, is one of the funniest and most outrageous animated shows on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. In addition to songs by Clipping., Belly, Mazzy Star, Chad VanGaalen and Blonde Redhead, the soundtrack to Rick and Morty (Sub Pop) features original music by the show’s composer Ryan Elder. The blacklight poster included with the disc is an added bonus. Based on storyteller/musician Eric Litwin’s book series of the same name, Pete the Cat (UMe/ASG), the various artists soundtrack to the new animated Amazon Prime Video family program is a purr-fect musical companion. Featuring a wide range of performers, including Elvis Costello, Diana Krall and KT Tunstall (all of whom provide character voices in the show), the expanded 28-track edition of the disc boasts nine holiday bonus tracks performed by Jason Mraz, Dave Matthews and others.
