LGBT Network to hold Youth Summit in Queens The LGBT Network’s #GetJustice Project is working to build awareness and knowledge about Sexual and Reproductive Justice (SRJ) issues for the LGBT community, especially LGBT young people. The project seeks to end the stigma, oppression, and barriers to access for sexual and reproductive health, wellness, and justice specific to LGBT youth by educating young people and youth-serving professionals about the SRJ framework. On Friday, April 20th, as part of its #GetJustice Project, the LGBT Network will host The Queens LGBT Activism and Advocacy Youth Conference at CUNY School of Law at 2 Court Square W, Long Island City at 9am. The LGBT Network’s #GetJustice Youth Summit will educate and empower participants to advocate for the rights of LGBT people and ignite their activism. Attendees will receive training on advocacy skills and how to organize for the LGBT Network’s new youth-led Day-of-Action in their schools and communities. Each participant will receive a Dayof-Action Tool Kit, plus the knowledge and skills to #GetJustice. Students, educators, professionals, health and human service providers, and other members of the community are encouraged to attend. Pride on the Beach returning to Long Beach this June After last year’s rousing success, Long Island Pride returns to the beautify City by the Sea – Long Beach, NY! The 3-day Pride on the Beach celebration will take place on June 8th, 9th, and 10th! The Long Island Pride Parade traces its origins back to 1991 when Long Island Lesbian and Gay Pride Freedom Committee founders approached the Town of Huntington to grant a permit to hold the first Pride Parade. The request was denied by the town on the grounds that only “traditional” parades were allowed on Huntington’s streets. The committee was represented by the ACLU and the matter was heard in a federal court that year, on May 28 by Judge Leonard D. Wexler who ruled in favor of the committee and granted the parade permit. The first Long Island Pride Parade was held on June 9, 1991. 4

Long Island Youth Preparing to Get Loud following Day of Silence On April 27th, schools across the United States will participate in Day of Silence, a national campaign that brings visibility to the issue of heterosexism, and the efforts of individual Gay-Straight Alliance clubs. Students who participate will take a vow of silence to show solidarity and raise awareness of how LGBT people feel silenced by heterosexist and transphobic comments and bullying. The negative impact of such treatment of LGBT youth cannot be overstated. Schools can be hostile environments for a distressing number of LGBT students, the overwhelming majority of whom routinely hear anti-LGBT language and experience victimization and discrimination at school. As a result, many LGBT students avoid school activities or miss school entirely. As Day of Silence comes to a close, Night of Noise roars to life, as students gather at the LGBT Network Center at Bay Shore to gain a voice and express what the Day of Silence meant to them. The block party style event includes games, music, dancing, and crafts. Each year, youth spray paint discriminatory, abusive, and hateful language they’ve heard to ultimately construct a “wall of hate”. As night falls, youth line up and each have an opportunity to swing a sledgehammer at the wall until it crumbles. A symbolic and cathartic demonstration that youth look forward to every year. Night of Noise was created by the LGBT Network a decade ago to let students break their silence and empower them to stand up to the barriers that LGBT youth face every day. Youth are invited to participate this year on April 27th, 6PM at the Center at Bay Shore.

LGBT Network celebrating Transgender Day of Visibility March 28th marks the LGBT Network’s second annual Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV), a celebration of the lives and accomplishments of Transgender identified people. TDOV is a day for community members to show support for the trans community. It aims to bring attention to the accomplishments of trans people around the globe while fighting cissexism and transphobia by spreading knowledge of the trans community. The night’s theme is “Love and Resistance”. The relaxed ceremony features speakers, audience interaction, an open mic, and refreshments & desserts. Join your community for this empowering event at 7pm at the Center at Bay Shore.

Former Google engineer says he was fired over 'social activism' (Rueters) - A former Google engineer has filed a lawsuit alleging that he was fired for speaking out against James Damore’s controversial memo about gender, the latest development in a litigious battle over diversity and speech at the technology company. Tim Chevalier, a site reliability engineer who worked for Google until November 2017, sued his former employer in California state court on Wednesday. Chevalier, who identifies as queer, disabled and transgender, alleges that Google terminated him over posts he made on internal forums advocating for diversity at Google and criticizing Damore. Damore was fired for “advancing harmful gender stereotypes” in August 2017 after the memo, in which he posited that psychological differences between men and women explain the gaping gender imbalance at Google, was leaked and went viral. Damore’s firing became a flashpoint for conservatives, and in January he filed a class action suit alleging that Google discriminates against white male conservatives. 'I see things differently': James Damore on his autism and the Google memo The Damore lawsuit included nearly 100 pages of screen shots of internal communications at Google which the suit alleged demonstrated widespread hostility against conservative viewpoints. The Chevalier lawsuit offers a different spin on the debates that played out on Google’s internal email lists and message boards, which the attorney David Lowe described in a statement as “a cesspool of bullying and harassment”. Google failed to prevent employees from using the internal platforms to discriminate against marginalized groups, the suit alleges, allowing Google employees to call LGBT coworkers “immoral” and post statements such as:“If we have fewer Black and Latin@ people here, doesn’t that mean they’re not as good?” Chevalier regularly participated in these internal discussions, the lawsuit states, “calling out discrimination and harassment for what it was and asking his peers to reflect on perspectives different from their own”

“It is a cruel irony that Google attempted to justify firing me by claiming that my social networking posts showed bias against my harassers,” Chevalier said in a statement. “The anti-discrimination laws are meant to protect marginalized and underrepresented groups – not those who attack them.” In an emailed statement, Google defended its termination of Chevalier. “An important part of our culture is lively debate. But like any workplace, that doesn’t mean anything goes,” a spokeswoman, Gina Scigliano, said. “The overwhelming majority of our employees communicate in a way that is consistent with our policies. But when an employee does not, it is something we must take seriously. We always make our decision without any regard to the employee’s political views.” The suit alleges that Chevalier was chastised by his manager for spending too much time on “social activism” and by human resources for a blogpost he wrote criticizing the Damore memo as “misogynistic”. According to the suit, Google objected to Chevalier’s use of the phrase “white boys” in his blogpost because it “could be perceived as a generalization about race and gender”. Chevalier “learned that Google defines appropriate workplace speech by the standard of what someone with a cisgender, heterosexual, white, male, uppermiddle-class background would say,” the suit states. “In truth, Google’s promise to allow its employees to freely speak their minds only apples to people who represent the majority viewpoint and use the majority’s rhetoric.”

Time to 'shine a light' and ban conversion therapies – experts (Reuters) - Treatments that claim to “cure” gay people are making headlines, with a new movie winning praise, another yanked off the screen and a tiff at the Winter Olympics reigniting calls for banning so-called conversion therapy. Despite global gains in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights, many gay people are still forced to undergo archaic and invasive therapy based on the idea that homosexuality is a mental disorder or medical condition. Such treatment - often in religious settings - can involve psychoanalysis, injections and electric shocks. While the practice has been widely discredited, only Brazil, Ecuador and Malta have nationwide bans, says the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA). In other nations, the practice is prohibited by medical associations. It remains legal in most of the United States, but several states, cities and counties have ruled it illegal. Campaigners said public awareness is rising following an awardwinning movie unveiled 6

at the Sundance Film Festival and the recent cancellation by a London cinema of a screening of a conversion film after protest from the LGBT community. “These moments are moments to shine a light,” Xavier Persad, legislative counsel at the Washington-based Human Rights Campaign, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. “Conversion therapy is still happening,” he said, calling it “ubiquitously condemned” and “incredibly harmful”. IN THE SPOTLIGHT At Sundance, “The Miseducation of Cameron Post”, about teens sent to conversion therapy, won the Grand Jury Prize last month. “We want to dedicate this award to the LGBTQ survivors of sexual conversion therapy,” said actress Chloe Grace Moretz, in accepting the award. In the United States, nearly 700,000 LGBT adults have undergone conversion therapy, according to estimates by The Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law in California. The practice has been discredited by the American Medical Association, American Psychological Association, Britain’s Royal College of General Practitioners, and the Church of England. Laura Russell, head of policy for Stonewall, a UK-based gay rights group, said these recent developments reinforce that “all forms of ‘therapy’ that attempt to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity are unethical and wrong”. “Lesbian, gay, bi and trans people are not ill,” she said.

Freestyle skiing: Kenworthy doesn't want Pence 'distraction' (Reuters) – Gus Kenworthy hopes the growing number of openly gay athletes at the Olympics will one day ensure the topic of sexuality barely merits a mention at the Games but the U.S. skier says there is still a long way to go. Kenworthy, who has dubbed U.S. Vice President Mike Pence a “bad fit” to lead their delegation in Pyeongchang, became the first openly gay action sports athlete when he came out in a cover story for ESPN The Magazine in 2015. The 26-year-old told Reuters on Sunday he was excited about representing the United States as well as the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community at the ongoing Games in South Korea. However, he said he had no intention of meeting Pence, who is often to the right of mainstream America on gay rights and other social issues. “I don’t think I have any inclination toward a meeting, I think in terms of distractions, as my previous questions would be, I think that would be a much bigger distraction for me,” said Kenworthy, a silver medal winner in the ski slopestyle at Sochi. The British-born freestyle skier told an American T.V.show that Pence was ill-suited to lead the U.S. delegation and posted a dig at the former Indiana governor on Instagram after Friday’s opening ceremony. “Eat your heart out, Pence,” wrote Kenworthy in a caption for a photo of him and U.S. figure skater Adam Rippon, another openly gay athlete at the Games. “I think that myself being out, Adam being out, all these athletes finally being out for the first time, I think it just shows a shift, a change, and hopefully in the future it means that it won’t be a big thing,” he added. “It won’t be a headline, it won’t be the gay Olympian, the gay skier, the gay anything, it will just be a skier.”

Burberry shows its colors for designer Bailey's swansong LONDON (Reuters) - Burberry’s star designer Christopher Bailey bid goodbye to the British brand on Saturday with a colour-infused show, showcasing designs with a rainbow twist on the label’s famed check print on a catwalk lit with laser beams. Bailey is leaving Burberry after 17 years, during which time he helped propel the brand, known for its trench coats and camel, black and red check, into a label of global prominence. His last collection, unveiled during London Fashion Week at a giant warehouse that once served as a bus depot, featured a youthful, street culture vibe, from slinky tracksuits to fleecy oversized hoodies paired up with voluminous skirts. Bold colors dominated the designs, from the chunky knitted sweaters with geometrical patterns to the rainbow checks featured throughout, in a celebration of the symbol of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. The catwalk display ended with a multi-color lighting spectacular, as Bailey waved goodbye to a standing ovation. “It’s quite poignant, there’s people I’ve worked with here since the beginning of my career. It’s been a very special night,” Bailey told Reuters after the show. “The company has got such incredible things ahead and I‘m excited now to be able to watch Burberry continue to flourish and fly.” Bailey is stepping down from Burberry’s board at the end of March and will lend support to the brand’s management until the end of 2018. He said he would be spending time out with his family but was also open to other moves. “I‘m just speaking to lots of people, there’s lots of fun exciting projects out there. So we’ll see, I‘m not in any rush at all,” Bailey said. British model and actress Cara Delevingne, one of the faces of Burberry campaigns, closed the runway show in a flowing striped rainbow cape.

New Indonesia web system blocks more than 70,000 'negative' sites JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia has blocked more than 70,000 websites displaying “negative” content such as pornography or extremist ideology in the first month of using a new system to help purge the internet of harmful material, the communications minister told Reuters. The world’s most populous Muslim-majority country has stepped up efforts to control online content after a rise in hoax stories and hate speech, and amid controversial antipornography laws pushed by Islamic parties. The so-called “crawling system” developed by a unit of staterun Telekomunikasi Indonesia Tbk (Telkom) was launched in January, using 44 servers to search internet content and issue alerts when inappropriate material is found. According to ministry data, the system, installed at a cost of around $15 million, helped block 72,407 pornography sites in January. Google, which is owned by Alphabet Inc, removed 73 LGBT-related apps from its Play Store last month, including the world’s largest gay dating app, Blued, on a request by Indonesia, a communications ministry official said. The lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community has faced a crackdown in Indonesia and the official said the contents of the apps contradicted cultural norms and contained pornographic content. Google declined to comment. Rudiantara said the relationship with social media companies and tech giants was improving and put some disagreements down to differences over what, for example, constitutes pornography. “To us probably it is pornographic, because we refer to the laws of pornography in Indonesia. Bermuda's gay marriage reversal sparks fears others may follow HAMILTON (Reuters) – Bermudian Joe Gibbons and his Canadian partner were ecstatic last year when the wealthy Atlantic island legalized same-sex marriage after a long struggle for gay equality - but their joy only lasted nine months. For the British overseas territory of 60,000 people - known for low taxes and stunning pink-sand beaches - this month became the first jurisdiction in the world to reverse a law allowing same-sex marriage. The reversal sparked fears for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights activists that it may reverberate far beyond Bermuda and set a dangerous precedent for a gay rights rollback after years of gains across the Western world. “This could open the door to undo marriage equality elsewhere,” said Jordan Sousa, founder of Bermuda’s Gay Straight Alliance, one of several local advocacy groups for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights, with 1,200-odd members. Same-sex marriage has become legal in 26 nations since the Netherlands led the way in 2001. Austria and Taiwan are set to join this list following court rulings on the matter in 2017. So it came as a surprise to many when Bermuda reversed its decision and introduced a new Domestic Partnership Act that let islanders form domestic partnerships but not marry. The government said gay couples who had wed would keep their status. Only a dozen or so same-sex weddings have taken place in Bermuda or on cruise ships registered in the territory in the nine months since it became legal. It was unclear how many have gay marriages been canceled as a result of the new legislation. FEELING VULNERABLE Gibbons and his Canadian husband said they were among those who now felt vulnerable. They plan to move to Canada this year. “One of the reasons we are leaving is the complete ambiguity of how the rights of same-sex couples will be guaranteed,” Gibbons, 64, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. “There is just a feeling that people are against you,” said Gibbons, who won a Supreme Court ruling in 2015 granting same-sex couples the same rights to live and work on Bermuda as heterosexual partners. Bermudian lawyer Mark Pettingill, who won last year’s marriage equality case in the Supreme Court, has filed a motion to challenge the new domestic partnership law. Some in the island’s LGBT community are lobbying Britain to intervene, although that appears unlikely to succeed given that Bermuda’s governor approved the law this month. “This is like saying to Rosa Parks you can sit wherever you like on the bus, and then you tell her she cannot sit in the front two rows,” said Pettingill, a former attorney general of Bermuda, referring to the United States’ civil rights heroine.

Hong Kong gay pop star says Malaysia show dropped over LGBT support KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - A Hong Kong pop star said on Thursday she had been denied permission to perform in Malaysia because she campaigns for gay rights, amid criticism from activists of rising intolerance toward the LGBT community in the Muslim-majority nation. Singer Denise Ho, who is openly gay, said Malaysian officials told her promoter that her application to perform in the capital Kuala Lumpur in April was refused due to her support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. The LGBT community is routinely persecuted in Malaysia, where gay sex is criminalized - punishable by up to 20 years in prison, caning, or a fine - and the government sanctions campaigns seeking to curb homosexuality and transgenderism. “I am disappointed,” Ho, one of Asia’s most famous Cantopop stars, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation from Hong Kong. “You would think that in 2018, where many countries are pushing for gay rights and same-sex marriages, that the world would be progressing,” she added. “But in fact it is not.” A Malaysian government minister did not specify why the application was turned down, but said all performances in the country must be done in accordance to “local law and values”.

Muslim designer's 'pride hijab' to spread message of love at gay Mardi Gras KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - A Muslim designer who created a rainbow “pride hijab” hopes it will become a symbol of inclusivity and spur more gay and transgender people to embrace their identity ahead of Australia’s 40th Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. The headscarf, created as part of a campaign to push for same-sex marriage in Australia, sold out days after it was launched in October, Australian-Sri Lankan Azahn Munas told the Thomson Reuters Foundation by phone. The designer said he was relaunching it for the Australian city’s famous festival on March 3 to “celebrate life and love”, and highlight the struggles of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. “We have had such a great response including from countries in the Middle East and East Asia. People were so happy that we acknowledged their identity but not in a negative way,” said Munas, who founded the Melbourne-based label MOGA in 2016. “They live in fear and persecution, they can’t live a free life because of where they live - we want to do this as a way to support them.”

Whether it’s knowing the already-established history of her sexuality or recalling that time a man had a very visible erection on stage as she performed, Demi Lovato appreciates Demischooled journalists. “Thanks for doing your research,” the 25-year-old singer-actress tells me. “I really appreciate and respect that.” Her warm send-off caps our frank exploration of queer topics, including the Disney alum’s desire to maintain an air of mystery regarding her own sexual orientation. While promoting her sixth studio album, Tell Me You Love Me, Lovato talked artists who pander to the LGBT community, daddy issues and Mariah Carey, meanwhile thoroughly explaining her mindful decision to remain tight-lipped to the press about the gender of the person she’s dating. Because many people will likely not have the opportunity to experience this, what is it like to perform at an NYC gay bar with gay porn playing and a man gyrating on a pole who very clearly has an erection? (Laughs) You know what, it was very interesting. I wasn’t paying much attention to what was going on behind me, but it was definitely a first-time experience... and it will probably be the last. Actually, who knows. It might not be the last! You weren’t paying attention to it? And by “it,” you know what I mean. I definitely noticed it, but I was trying to perform! It was being called one of the most cringeworthy stage invasions ever. Yeah, it was pretty cringeworthy. While we’re on the topic of wangs, tell me how the first thing out of your mouth while accepting the GLAAD Vanguard Award last year ended up being about Nick Jonas’ penis, when you said yours is bigger than his. It was a joke that I was thinking about saying before I went on because I know that everyone in the audience was totally daydreaming about Nick.

your LGBT activism. I love what you said about him in 2014 on Trailblazers, a Logo TV special honoring LGBT civil rights pioneers. How did he influence the way you grappled with your own sexuality? He definitely influenced me a lot. I actually would not like to talk about it just because I feel like – I think I outed him, actually, to some relatives, so it’s kind of a sensitive subject. You didn’t know he wasn’t out? No, I had no idea. How about other queer trailblazers that you’ve looked up to? No – you know, I love who I love and I feel like I look at everybody who is outspoken about who they are as an inspiration and that’s it. Your sexuality has been thoroughly dissected by the Internet after you alluded to being open to both genders. I want to give you the opportunity to speak on it as directly as you’d like. Thank you for the opportunity, but I think I’m gonna pass. “Cool for the Summer” became an anthem for people in the LGBT community, but AfterEllen, a lesbian pop-culture website, got the impression you were suggesting that same-sex intimacy has to be a secret. Was that message your intent and how would you respond to their feedback? My intention with the song was just fun and bi-curiosity. I think people look at song lyrics – they look too into it. I wish I could tell that website to “chill the fuck out” and “take a break,” because it’s just a song. I think we live in a world today where no matter what you do, you’re doing something wrong, whether it’s cultural appropriation or it’s being insensitive to certain groups of people. We just live in that age where everything we do is wrong and, unfortunately, everyone’s looking for a reason to have their voices heard, and sometimes it’s not always in the most positive way.

Was it even more special to have Nick present the award to you? It definitely meant something that it was being presented by somebody who has been very, very close to me for almost 10 years of my life, but also, it felt really amazing that I was being awarded by a whole community of people. I wasn’t seeking an award. I was just doing what is right. And people should be accepting of the LGBT community. It’s a no-brainer for me. So, defending and standing up for the LGBT community is something that I’ve always been fearless to do because it’s just the right thing to do. You’ve headlined many Prides and you even filmed your video for 2013’s “Really Don’t Care” at LA Pride. What has been your most proud Pride moment? I think my most proud Pride moment would be getting the Vanguard Award. It was just amazing. It was just a really good feeling and I was so honored to get that award. When in your career were you first aware that you had an LGBT following? I was aware at the very beginning because I came out with a song called “This Is Me” for a movie called Camp Rock (in 2008) and I had gay guys tell me, “This song helped me come out to my family because this song represents who I am.” That was when I was 15, and that was really beautiful to me and really unbelievable and powerful. You have become a staunch advocate for the gay community. I bet your late, gay grandfather would be really proud of

Ohh, I was thinking that would be a fun song for drag! I think a lot of people can relate to the lyrics, so just relate to it and then pour your heart and soul out into it. Is it important to have daddies on stage? No, no, no. It’s actually coming from the point of view where it’s like, “I have daddy issues,” so you don’t have to dress as a daddy. I mean, you can if you want! (Laughs) Do you have a desire to be a gay icon? If it happens, amazing. I think sometimes people can abuse that opportunity by trying to win over the gay community. It’s something that if it happens, amazing, and I’m more than willing to be that for people. But I don’t go out trying to win over a certain community just so I can say that I have that fanbase. Have some singers tarnished the “gay icon” label? No. Nobody has tarnished the label, but I’ve heard people say with certain people they are kind of using the fanbase just to get to that demographic. I never want my music to be for anyone. I want my music to stand up for them. You don’t want to pander is what it seems you’re saying. Yeah. I’ll never do that. If the gay community loves my music because they love it, then awesome. As someone who is an LGBT advocate, is there a reason you choose not to speak openly about your sexuality? I just feel like everyone’s always looking for a headline and they always want their magazine or TV show or whatever to be the one to break what my sexuality is. I feel like it’s irrelevant to what my music is all about. I stand up for the things that I believe in and the things that I’m passionate about, but I like to keep my personal life as private as possible when it comes to dating and sexuality and all that stuff just because it has nothing to do with my music. Unfortunately, we live in a world where everyone is trying to get that soundbite and I am purposefully not giving the soundbite. Watch my documentary. Oh? I have a documentary coming out on October 17 (on YouTube called Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated) and I answer a lot of questions in my documen tary. About your sexuality? Yeah, some about that. Because if ever I want to talk about it, I want it to be on my own terms. Then can we talk about how the drag queens are about to be practicing every song from this album for their routines? Because you guest judged RuPaul’s Drag Race. You know drag. What performance advice do you have for a drag queen who wants to do your new song “Daddy Issues”? 14

When it comes to gay icons, the Chers, Madonnas and Gagas of the world, which do you most want to share the stage with? I would love to share the stage with Gaga and Cher. I’d love to share the stage with RuPaul as well! I kind of did, but I want to perform with him. How about Mariah? (Laughs) You’re funny. Even though you called her “nasty” for her J. Lo shade, and her response when asked about you was “I don’t know her,” you both have GLAAD awards and I want to see you two kiss and make up and record a song together. I think she’s got an incredible voice and, you know, yeah, I’d love to share the stage with her. As someone who has overcome obstacles to be the sober, confident and empowered woman you are now, what would you tell a young, struggling LGBT person also trying to triumph over similar substance-abuse hurdles and body-image issues? I think a lot of people drinking and using in the LGBTQ community has to do with finding their identity. The most important thing to know is that you are never going to find your identity through drugs and alcohol, so don’t even go there. You are not going to find the answers through drugs and alcohol.

ONLY YESTERDAY Not only has the eponymous debut by Roxy Music stood the test of time, it’s surpassed it. Officially disbanded (again) since 2011, Roxy Music remains one of the most influential (art) rock bands in the history of modern pop music, in spite of not having released a studio album since 1982 (!). Reissued by Virgin EMI/UMe in a triple CD + one DVD box set, accompanied by a 136-page hardcover book featuring rare and unpublished photos, as well as a Richard Williams essay, the band’s first album features longtime vocalist Bryan Ferry in the lead. This was also a time when Brian Eno was still a member of the band, alongside Phil Manzanera, Andy Mackay, Paul Thompson and Graham Simpson and groundbreaking songs such as “Virginia Plain”, “Re-make/Re-Model”, “If There Is Something” and “Ladytron” made their way into our consciousness. In addition to the remastered album, this deluxe set includes a disc of 15 demos and out-takes from 1971 and 1972, a 14-track BBC Sessions disc and a DVD featuring live performances. Like fellow queer label-mate Perfume Genius (aka Mike Hadreas), Car Seat Headrest (aka Will Toledo) is making some of the most memorable and indispensable music of the 2010s. In one of the most arresting and ambitious musical moves made this year, Car Seat Headrest is releasing the double disc set Twin Fantasy (Matador). The first disc, Face to Face, is a 2016 re-recording of Car Seat Headrest’s original 10-song 2011 self-released debut Twin Fantasy. The second disc, Mirror to Mirror, is the original 2011 recording of the album. As much a historical document as it is a necessary component of Car Seat Headrest’s musical canon, including songs such as “Bodys”, “Cute Thing” (with its Frank Ocean shout out), “High To Death” and the Beach Boys-esque songs that bracket the album, “My Boy (Twin Fantasy)” and “Twin Fantasy (Those Boys)”, make for essential listening. Why it seems like it was only 2017 when The Shins released Heartworms, its first album in five years. On The Worms Heart (Aural Apothecary/Columbia), James Mercer and the band offer a different perspective on the predecessor’s 11 songs by flipping the order, as well as the arrangements. It’s an interesting experiment that pays off on songs such as “So Now What”, “Heartworms”, “Dead Alive”, “Rubber Balls”, “Name For You” and “Mildenhall”. 36

If there was anyone who could challenge John Mayer in the sexy/ sensitive songwriter arena of the early 21st century, it was Mr. A-Z himself, Jason Mraz. Mraz’s 2002 debut album Waiting For My Rocket to Come (Elektra), now available on vinyl for the first time in a three-sided double LP edition, arrived a year after Mayer’s first studio effort. Mraz, whose output was less consistent than Mayer’s, really hit his stride on later albums such as Love Is A Four Letter Word and Yes!. But there was definitely something about Waiting For My Rocket to Come that caught listeners’ (especially frat boys and sorority girls) ears. Song such as the hit single “The Remedy (I Won’t Worry)”, “Curbside Prophet”, “Too Much Food”, and “On Love, In Sadness” might have something to do with that. A “supergroup” led by studio session musicians David Paich and Steve Porcaro, Toto released its self-titled debut album 40 (!) years ago. The 17-track greatest hits compilation 40 Trips Around The Sun (Columbia/Legacy) opens with two newly recorded songs that sound like the band has no interest in diverting from its trademark. This is truest of “Spanish Sea” which sounds like a direct descendant of an earlier Toto hit, “Africa”. Regrettably not in chronological order, the album includes the band’s first hit single “Hold The Line”, as well as “Georgy Porgy” (featuring Cheryl Lynn!) and “I’ll Supply The Love” from the first album, as well as the obscure but irresistible “99”, the Grammy-winning “Rosanna”, the new song “Struck By Lightning” and more. With the current state of things in Trumpworld, the timing of the release of Yiddish Glory: The Lost Songs of World War II (Six Degrees) takes on even more significance. Performed by a group of nine musicians, the 18 songs on Yiddish Glory were “created during the darkest chapter of European Jewish history, composed by Jewish Red Army soldiers, Jewish refugees, and survivors of Ukranian ghettos, men women and children”. The Soviet Jewish Folk Music songs were discovered in unmarked boxes by librarians at the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine during the 1990s, now have a chance to be heard and enjoyed by a wide audience. Highly recommended!

Queer Sisterhood is Powerful Co-produced by Allison Zatarain and legendary songwriter/producer Richard Gottehrer, the 10song vinyl LP Instant Love Volume 1 (Instant Records), is intended to celebrate “the power of love between women, mothers, sisters, friends and lovers”. A reimagining of classic love songs by musical acts such as Billy Joel (“She’s Got A Way” sung by Lolo Zouai), The Beach Boys (“Don’t Worry Baby” done by Rachel Fannan) and The Kinks (“You Really Got Me” covered by Cavale). Highlights include Erika Spring (of Au Revoir Simone) performing “Colours” by Donovan, Holly Miranda’s reading of Leonard Cohen’s “I’m Your Man”, Irma Thomas’ rendition of “Crazy Love” by Van Morrison, Nicole Atkins singing “Amy” by Ryan Adams and jazz vocalist Karen Souza version of Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine”. Looking forward to volume two and others to follow. While we’re on the subject of cover tunes, the always brilliant lesbian singer/songwriter and bassist extraordinaire Meshell Ndegeocello, who paid tribute to Nina Simone on 2012’s Pour Une Âme Souveraine and has been including covers on more recent albums, has just put out the cleverly titled Ventriloquism (All Points/Believe). Ndegeocello reimagines 11 songs, originally released between 1982 and 1994, in her own distinctive style, and the results are breathtaking. Some renditions stick closer to the originals than others, as in the case of Ndegeocello’s readings of Prince’s “Sometimes It Snows In April” (from 1986), Lisa Lisa & The Cult Jam feat. Full Force’s “I Wonder If I Take You Home” and Al B. Sure’s “Nite And Day” (both from 1988), and yet manage to maintain her distinctive style. Some of the most exciting moments occur on deconstructed versions of George Clinton’s “Atomic Dog” (from 1982), Ralph Tresvant’s “Sensitivity” (from 1990), Sade’s “Smooth Operator” (from 1984), Janet Jackson’s “Funny How Time Flies (When You’re Having Fun)”, and “Force MD’s “Tender Love”. Brava, diva! Is it too early in the year to begin assembling a “best of” list? If not, the Ndegeocello disc certainly qualifies. As does the devastating Rifles & Rosary Beads (In The Black/Thirty Tigers) by lesbian singer/songwriter Mary Gauthier. A product of Gauthier’s association with Darden Smith’s nonprofit organization SongwritingWith:Soldiers in which soldiers are teamed up with professional songwriters. For Gauthier’s album, she collaborated with male and female soldiers for a majority of the tracks. Two of the songs, including the devastating “The War After The War” were written by military wives whose soldier husbands returned from the battlefield wounded. Gauthier, who is a sort of queer Lucinda Williams, has a history of bringing listeners to tears (check out 2010’s The Foundling), but Rifles & Rosary Beads takes that ability to a whole new level. Certain to earn queer musician Joan As Police Woman (aka Joan Wasser) a larger devoted following, her new smoky and soulful new album Damned Devotion (PIAS), is the latest from an artist who follows her own inviting path. Arresting numbers such as the title cut, “Steed (for Jean Genet)”, “Tell Me”, “Wandering Bell”, “What Was It Like”, “Rely On”, “Silly Me” and “I Don’t Mind”, don’t sound like anyone or anything else. Joan As Police makes indescribably delicious music, and she doesn’t need to flash her badge to do it. 40

No one could ever accuse Swedish pop goddess Tove Lo of slacking off. Two years may have passed between 2014’s Queen of the Clouds and 2016’s Lady Wood, but 2017’s BLUE LIPS (Lady Wood Phase II) arrived a year later continuing the frank (bi)sexuality of its predecessor. How frank? Just listen to “shivering gold” and “bitches” as a couple of examples. Featuring lesbian bass player Laura Lee, the trio Khruangbin touches down with its second album Con Todo El Mundo (Dead Oceans/Night Time Stories). A mostly instrumental affair that sounds as timeless as it does of the moment, Con Todo El Mundo could be the soundtrack to a night of passionate lovemaking, a hipster loft party or a dinner with old friends. Seriously, can’t you just picture your friends dancing in their brightly colored and patterned stocking feet to “Maria También”, “Evan Finds The Third Room” or “Como Me Quieres”. It might seem hard to believe, but Atlanta-based lesbian singer/songwriter Michelle Malone has been putting out albums for 30 years (!). Her latest, Slings & Arrows (SBS Records), finds her getting political on “Love Yourself” and “Just Getting Started”. For someone who’s been at it as long as Malone has, it’s nice that she’s still able to surprise and thrill us as she does with her cover of Otis Redding’s “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long”, a duet with Shawn (“Lullaby”) Mullins. On SweetSexySavage (Atlantic), the debut disc by queer R&B artist Kehlani, listeners go on a grand tour of the various styles of contemporary black music, including hip-hop-influenced modern soul. It’s a strong and memorable first album, the best of which can be found on the songs “Thank You”, “Advice”, “Hold Me By The Heart”, “Get Like” and “Too Much”. The song “Shameful Feeling”, described as being about “the journey of coming out of hiding, rising above painful adolescent memories, and learning to shut out fears and self-doubt” within a “queer context” is a powerful track near the center of the six-song EP Garage Sale (carryillinoisband.com) by Carry Illinois, led by lesbian singer/ songwriter Lizzy Lehman. “Goodnight”, the album’s heart-tugging closing track, deals with the suicide of original band member John Winsor, and is a stunning tribute. The five-song EP Freedom Girl (livlombardi.com) is the latest release by genderqueer singer/songwriter Liv Lombardi, who divides her time between NYC and Santa Fe. The all-female punk-blues quintet Jane Lee Hooker features two queer band members. The 10 tracks on its new album, Spiritus (Ruf) are loud and proud. Sue Quigley is a Seattle-based lesbian neo-roots folk singer. Her new album is Little Wilderness (suequigley.com). Also based in Seattle, acoustic/electric duo Syrinx Effect creates what they describe as “interstellar folk punk jazz”. Naomi, the queer half of the duo plays trombone, while straight band-mate Kate is on soprano sax. Both women incorporate electronic elements for musical manipulation of the 10 songs on the album A Sky You Could Strike A Match On (http://www.syrinxeffect.com/bandcamp/).
