Patchogue LGBT Community Center and 2017 Pride At the Beach Big Winners At NY Awards On Thursday, December 8th, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced millions of dollars in economic and community development funding awarded through the sixth round of the Regional Economic Development Council Initiative, including $250,000 in capital funding for the Patchogue LGBT Community Center and $300,000 of “Market NY” funding for the production of the 2017 Pride at the Beach. The Regional Economic Development Council Initiative empowers community, business, and academic leaders, as well as members of the public in each region of the state, to develop strategic plans specifically tailored to their region's unique strengths and resources in order to create jobs, improve quality of life and grow the economy. As part of the sixth round, the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council selected the LGBT Network projects as regional priorities based on their significant impact to local communities, tourism, and workforce development. “The LGBT Network is excited and proud of the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council and Governor Andrew Cuomo for their steadfast support of the Patchogue LGBT Community Center and the first Pride at the Beach in the City of Long Beach,” said LGBT Network CEO David Kilmnick. “I thank the Governor and the LIREDC for their invaluable leadership and vision, which will help us to strengthen our community, create jobs, and drive economic activity in a region still recovering from the devastation of Superstorm Sandy.” This is the second year in which the LGBT Network has won big at the annual awards, having secured $500,000 towards the construction of the Patchogue LGBT Community Center in round 5.

Winter Ball Raises Funds, Awareness for Fight Against HIV/AIDS On Friday, December 2nd, over 300 guests filled the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury for the LGBT Network’s annual Winter Ball fundraiser event. This year’s Winter Ball, which featured a special performance by hit recording artist Reina, raised over $89,000 to support the LGBT Networks HIV/AIDS prevention and outreach services. “HIV Infections are unfortunately still on the rise on Long Island, despite the many advances in treatment and prevention made in the last few years,” said LGBT Network CEO David Kilmnick. “Through increased testing, early intervention, and improved access to care, we can functionally end the epidemic of new HIV infections on Long Island.” The LGBT Network offers free, quick and confidential HIV/ STI testing at its community centers and in the community with its mobile testing unit. Funds raised at this year’s Winter Ball will provide for hundreds of free HIV/STI tests so that people can know their status and get connected to care.

North Carolina’s Governor-Elect: “Time to Repeal” Anti-LGBT Law
Startling new report shows more must be done for LGBT Youth A report released recently by Human Rights Watch reveals that despite the "positive trends" for LGBTQ rights this past decade, there is still a great deal of work to be done to support and affirm LGBT young people in the US. LGBTQ youth, according to the report, still "have disproportionately high rates of homelessness, physical and mental health concerns, and suicidality." They can be put into "conversion therapy," which is legal in all but five states, and in 2016, lawmakers in at least 18 states tried to pass legislation to keep transgender students from using the bathrooms and locker rooms that correspond with their gender identity. And the report found that, because of policy, the attitudes of students and teachers and the actions and inactions of school administrators — school is a dangerous and scary place for LGBTQ kids. According to Human Rights Watch, the problems that LGBTQ students face in public schools in the U.S. "undermine a number of fundamental human rights that the U.S. is obliged to uphold under international law," rights that "all levels" of government have the responsibility to uphold.

ADVOCATE – In one of the few bright spots on election night, North Carolina elected Roy Cooper to be its next governor. The Democrat recently addressed supporters gathered at North Carolina State’s McKimmon Center, saying that after weeks of a recount that stalled the outcome of the painfully close 2016 election, it’s time to nullify North Carolina’s anti-LGBT law. “With this election, North Carolina is on its way to repairing its reputation,” Cooper told the crowd, which packed the room to hear his speech. “Let's finish the job and repeal HB 2.” House Bill 2 was pushed through the legislature in March during an emergency session. Introduced, debated, and signed into law in a single day, the legislation forces trans people to use public restrooms that do not correspond with their gender identity when visiting government buildings and schools. It also blocks municipalities from enacting or enforcing LGBT-inclusive nondiscrimination laws. The sitting governor, Pat McCrory, strongly supported the law and stood by it, even as it did extreme harm to the state.
National Center for Transgender Equality Releases Latest Survey Results The National Center for Transgender Equality has released results from the 2015 U.S. Trans Survey (USTS), the follow up to the National Transgender Discrimination Survey and the largest survey ever devoted to the lives and experiences of trans people. The study was developed and conducted by the National LGBTQ Task Force and the National Center for Transgender Equality in 2008- 2009, and the results were released in the 2011 report: Injustice At Every Turn. As the single-most cited study about trans people—cited by media over 15,000 times—it has dramatically changed how the public and policymakers understand the challenges facing trans people. Mom Sues Trans Teen Over Medical Transition BuzzFeed: A lawsuit filed by a Minnesota woman, Anmarie Calgaro, alleges that her 17-year old transgender daughter wrongfully underwent transitionrelated medical care without her mother’s consent. Calgaro named her child, referring to as her “son” and by the initials “J.D.K.” in the suit, as one of the defendants. The teen’s health care providers, Park Nicollet Health Services and Fairview Health Services, were also named as defendants, as well as St. Louis County and the teen’s school district, all for treating her as an emancipated minor. Calgaro is being represented by the Thomas More Society, an anti-abortion law firm most well-known for currently defending David Deleiden, the activist who last year released undercover films about Planned Parenthood’s donation of fetal tissues to medical research. “The bottom line of this lawsuit is that my basic civil rights to raise my child in the way I want have been violated,” Calgaro, 38, told BuzzFeed News. J.D.K. could not be reached for comment. The two health providers named in the suit both declined to comment, citing pending legislation.
Pulse Owner Decides Not to Sell Club to City of Orlando AP - The owner of the Florida nightclub where the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history took place said Monday that she is no longer interested in selling the property to the city of Orlando. Pulse nightclub owner Barbara Poma said in a statement that she can't walk away from the property, where 49 people were killed and dozens more injured during a massacre last June. Gunman Omar Mateen, who was killed in a shootout with SWAT team members after a three-hour standoff, pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group. Poma said she plans to use the space to create a "sanctuary of hope" and a welcoming area where people can reflect on those affected by the tragedy. "I feel a personal obligation to ensure that a permanent space at Pulse be created so that all generations to come will remember those affected by, and taken on, June 12," she said. Last month, the city of Orlando announced plans to purchase Pulse and eventually convert it into a memorial. The city had planned to pay $2.25 million for the gay nightclub property. City spokeswoman Cassandra Lafser said in a statement that city officials respect Poma's decision "and are hopeful the Pulse site continues to be a place of hope and healing that honors the victims."
Cherokee Nation Will Recognize Same-Sex Marriage The attorney general of the Cherokee Nation issued an opinion on Friday indicated that the tribe of approximately 300,000 living mostly within the state of Oklahoma, will recognize same-sex marriages. Tulsa World reports, while agreeing that the tribe, as a sovereign nation itself, was not bound by the 2015 U.S. Supreme Court decision that made gay marriage legal in all 50 states, Todd Hembree echoed the court’s reasoning, deciding that the tribe’s own constitution “protects the fundamental right to marry,” regardless of the genders involved in the relationship. That decision appears to nullify a law that the Cherokee Nation enacted in 2004 to specify that marriage had to be between a man and woman. That law came after two women, Dawn McKinley and Kathy Reynolds, obtained a marriage license from the tribe. ThenAttorney General Dianne Hammons issued an opinion that the license was invalid because Cherokee law, while not specifically requiring couples to be opposite-sex, presumed the traditional definition of marriage. then quickly passed a bill to make that definition explicit. The attorney general’s opinion came after a request from the tribe’s Tax Commission director who asked for clarification on licenses issued by the state of Oklahoma. Under the opinion, conscientious objections to issuing marriage licenses or benefits are prohibited but ministers and citizens are not forced to participate in same-sex ceremonies. The attorney general also noted that gender roles and sexuality are Christian constructs and before Christianity was introduced to the tribe alternative sexual orientations were recognized. Beijing Opens First HIV Prevention Center for Students HIV PLUS MAGAZINE: Young men in China have one of the fastest rates of new HIV cases in the population, with 2,300 students testing positive in the first nine months of this year, according to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Beijing has finally begun to focus prevention strategies towards high school and university students specifically to begin addressing this epidemic. In fact, the city just opened its very first center for HIV prevention focusing on ages 15 to 24, reports China News Service. It’s long overdue, seeing as over 654,000 people are living with HIV or AIDS in China today, with 80 percent of new cases having contracted the virus through unprotected sex — a number that has risen 20 percent since 2008. “Because of reasons related to fear,” director of the Chinese National Center for AIDS/STD Control and Prevention, Wu Zunyou, said to Reuters, “exposure of their identity, exposure of the fact that they’re infected, and discrimination, those who have contracted (HIV) don’t wish to talk about their own identity as a host of the disease.”
Hong Kong Rainbow Lions Spark LGBT Rights Debate BBC NEWS: One of Hong Kong's icons - a pair of lions guarding the HSBC building has been given a rainbow-coloured makeover. Replicas of the two lions have been painted as part of the bank's "Celebrate Pride, Celebrate Unity" campaign for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) rights. It's a sight that might not be considered controversial in many cities - but in Hong Kong it has reignited debate about gay rights and whether corporations should get involved. Although Hong Kong is an international city, it is divided when it comes to social issues like LGBT rights. In a 2011 survey, 22% of respondents said they were "not accepting" of lesbian, gay and transgender individuals, and a further 21% said they felt ambivalent or unsure. A quarter of respondents also felt it was "acceptable" or "sometimes acceptable" to not offer a job to an LGBT individual. LW, a lawyer who asked not to be identified, says he considered LGBT discrimination to be "pretty serious in Hong Kong". "Though I think things are changing with the younger generation, discrimination is still quite rampant for the older generation - I am 'out' to my younger colleagues at work but not to my boss." The Hong Kong government has published anti-LGBT discrimination adverts - but has stopped short of implementing anti-discrimination legislation so far.
India: Protesters Take to Streets over Law Criminalising ‘Homosexual Acts’ UK INDEPENDENT: Hundreds of gay rights activists marched to the beat of drums in Delhi recently both to celebrate their sexuality and to draw attention to the continuing discrimination India's LGBT community faces. Some participants in the annual gay pride parade said the ninth event felt different to past marches because more people have come to accept gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. But others said India's right-wing government is reversing rights gains by re-instating a law criminalizing ‘homosexual acts.’ In 2009, activists cheered and danced in the street when the New Delhi High Court declared Section 377 of the Penal Code unconstitutional. The colonial era anti-sodomy law, which is vaguely worded but usually interpreted as criminalising various homosexual acts, was written into the law books of dozens of colonies by the British Empire. It still exists today in 42 of 52 British commonwealth nations. In 2013, the judgment was overturned, making gay sex once again punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Rituparna Borah, an activist, was not very hopeful, saying that the Hindu nationalist government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not supportive of gay rights. “We have yet to have an inclusive society,” she said. 10

“You know what I’ll be Googling tonight: Bublé, gay, queer, all that stuff,” says Michael Bublé one recent afternoon, after being informed that said search terms render colorful results. All you lovers, though, needn’t search beyond the dreamy crooner’s recently released album, Nobody But Me, and its 10 feel-good tunes, including several new originals and reimagined classics gleaned from the Great American Songbook. Love, naturally, is featured prominently on Bublé’s ninth studio album, as well as in our recent chat, during which the affable ally spoke about the “joy” the LGBT community has brought him and the importance of standing up for queer issues. And no, not solely because he’s a staunch LGBT-rights advocate – when his kids grow up and read this interview, he says it’s important to him that they feel “proud.” In 2010, you performed on a stage you deemed “phallic” because it resembled a penis. Then, a gay man threw you his keys, and you were not shy about bending over and picking them up. (Laughs) I remember! That was a guy named Paul O’Grady, and he’s very famous in the UK. He does an act where he dresses up as a woman, who is also very famous, almost like Dame Edna. He’s a sweetie pie. I was so happy that he did that that night because it just gave me so much. How would you describe the affection for you from the gay community? The truth is, I don’t think I could’ve given them as much joy as they’ve given me. I’m in a business where, as you can imagine, I’m surrounded by the gay community. I mean, that’s just my life. I’m an artist, and so I’m surrounded by other artists. And everyone from my hair stylist who lives with me on the road to (my stylist) Jeff Kim, who puts me in my suits every day – I mean, god, the question isn’t who’s gay? The question is, who isn’t? (Laughs) And by the way, the ones that seem the most macho, they’re probably gay. Now would be a good time to talk about how your wife, Luisana Lopilato, thought you were gay when she first met you. (Laughs) Yes, she walked in this room with a man, and the man was so good lookin’ that he made Brad Pitt look dumpy, so I assumed they were together. I naturally assumed that this was her boyfriend or her husband, so I refused to hit on her. And listen, it didn’t help that she didn’t speak English either at the time. Not a word. But the more I drank that night, the more brazen I got about trying to find out what the situation was between them. Finally, after two hours – and I don’t know how many shots and glasses of whiskey – I finally said, (effects a drunk slur) “You guys are such a beautiful couple,” and he said, “We’re not together.” He said, “She came because she likes you.” And at the same time, she was on the phone texting her mom saying,

“Oh my god, Michael Bublé is all over my friend. He’s so gay.” She knows you’re straight now, right? (Laughs) I assume so. I mean, after the kids. Also, I assume she thinks I’m not gay when every night I say, “Mmmmm?!” and she says, “No, I have a headache.” You recently donated items that were auctioned off to benefit the Stonewall National Monument. To be honest, I’m doing more because of (my publicist) Liz Rosenberg. There’s something I have in the works. There’s the Harvey Milk High School that she was talking about here in New York, and I want to help there too. Listen, I love being able to spout words, but sometimes you gotta put your money where your mouth is. (Liz) said, “Should I call your manager to find out if he thinks it’s OK?” So she called my manager and my manager said, “Why are you asking me? Of course!” How long before there was a pic of you suggestively eating corn on the cob did you become aware of your gay following? (Laughs) I think it was hours. Just hours? Hours! You know, that day I took my godson, my best friend and his wife to Disneyland, and I was looking after him because he’s a little guy. He’s 4 years old and he had this corn, and butter was everywhere. So, I was trying to help him with napkins, and then I grab mine and it was dripping… and my first thought was… oh god, you know what I mean. It was just the worst timing ever. The truth is, I had fun with it. There are so many terrible things you could do to land in the press or go viral with, and if that’s the worst thing, then you know what, I just gotta laugh at myself. But seriously: When did you know you had a gay following? Listen, I’m not Madonna. I don’t look out and see thousands of gay couples out at the shows, but even at the start, man, when I played the Blue Note (a jazz club in Greenwich Village, New York City). I’ll tell you the honest truth: I played the Blue Note 16 years ago, and the other night I had a show there, and I’m still close with one of the first fans I ever had in America. Forget about the world. In America. And his name is Johnny Blue Note, and he’s LIVING OUT

about 6-foot-5, a New Yorker with a huge personality, and he’s beautiful. I got sentimental the other night. I did a big radio show to open up the record, and I looked into this little, intimate club, and there was Johnny Blue Note. And I got sentimental. I talked about (him) during the show. So, I think from the very start there was Johnny. That was my first ever gig, and one of my greatest fans and harshest critics was Johnny. He was my foray into my relationship with the gay community and me as an entertainer. Even before my music director was Alan Chang, there was Bryant Olender and Bryant is this really smart, funny, talented, slutty, very gay musical director. You say you’re no Madonna, but still, you’ve performed with several gay icons: Barbra Streisand, Mariah Carey, Kylie Minogue… Kylie Minogue, yes. I sang with her, and actually, I was supposed to see her in Vancouver. She was going to come over and have tea with me, but I had to fly to Europe. She had been there and was going to come over, because I happened to sing with her on a Rod Stewart special and we really got on and liked each other, so I was just gonna hang out with her literally weeks ago. And Elton John is somebody I’ve gotten to know. I love him very much. Obviously, we don’t have to talk about how talented he is – we know how talented he is. He’s also really warm and effusive with me, and I just saw him in Vegas. I went backstage and gave him a big hug. He was so happy, and he really enjoyed being there. It’s funny, man, because I gotta guess that there are people out there who are gay in this business but won’t tell anyone. Have you met these closeted stars? Yeah, I meet them and I get the impression. And listen, I’m not gonna be the guy who outs the person, but it always made me wonder: “Why?” I understand if they are afraid, or they don’t want to tell their parents, but the fact that it could be a question within this business of hurting your business is just mind-blowing to me. Do any of them confide in you? No. I mean, I have the worst gay-dar ever. I really do have the worst gay-dar. I could be hanging with somebody and my friends will be like, “Michael, he was hitting on you hard,” and I’m like, “What are you talking about – he’s just a really nice guy!” Sometimes I don’t pick up the shit people are puttin’ down. If a gay couple asked you to sing any of the songs off this new album at their wedding, which would you sing and why? Aww. I think maybe “The Very Thought of You.” And to be honest with you, man: I don’t care if it’s a gay or a straight or a black or a poor wedding – love is love. And I think that would be a really beautiful, romantic first dance. In the past, you’ve man-crushed on Blake Shelton and One Direction’s Niall Horan. Who are you currently man-crushing on? That’s a good question. God, you wanna hear who I’m man-crushing on? There’s a couple of them. My No. 1 man crush is probably John Oliver (host of HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver). The other is (The Daily Show host) Trevor Noah. Goddamn – what a stunning South-African man. You know what I love man? I love that they’re selfdeprecating and funny, and I know they’re empathetic because their point of view tells me that. Obviously, they’re liberal, progressive, self14

I’m trying to think of people I spend most of my evenings with, because this is who I spend most of my evenings with. Oh, Lawrence Krauss, the greatest astrophysicist. Honestly, their intelligence and skill at orating just… I mean, I’m wet. Is it true that your Uncle Frank and Uncle Mike, who have been together for over 40 years, taught you acceptance and open-mindedness? With or without them, the truth is, my father and my mother were so progressive, and I’m so lucky that my father just made it very simple. He just said, “It’s nature. A man can love a man and a woman can love a woman, and this doesn’t just happen with human beings – it’s science. It happens in nature. It happens with almost every animal.” Having two boys of my own who I love more than I’ll ever love myself, I can’t tell you how crushing it would be if they couldn’t feel that they could tell their father that they were gay – or different in any way. human beings, and if that’s who they are – because I’m killed, just devastated, when I hear people saying they “choose.” “Choose”? What are you fucking talking about? You don’t choose. It isn’t a choice. It is genetic. And I understand some people have an issue with the whole marriage thing and the sanctity of this word “marriage.” I mean, I don’t get it, but I can choose to listen to their point and hear it. I don’t agree with it. I always joke, everyone jokes: Why can’t gay people be just as miserable as straight people who are married? But listen to me, we are in a world – a dangerous world – right now, and if you’re not standing up against intolerance, then you’re for it. God, I sounded like George W. fucking Bush right there, holy shit. “If you’re not with us, you’re against us!” As an ally with a massive platform, it’s important for you to say that for this movement to move forward. I agree. And you know what, I think people are so afraid of losing fans. Are you afraid of that? No, no. I’m not. Because you know what, years from now, when my kids grow up and they read this, they’re going to be proud of their father because their father was on the right side of the line. There are a lot of people, and time does this, who are going to be severely embarrassed for their bias and intolerance. And they’re going to have to live with that; that’s going to be their legacy. I refuse to have that as part of my legacy.

HIV Advocates Face Challenges New and Old After U.S. Elections A full repeal of Obamacare is unlikely, but the Ryan White Care Act will be even more important to people with HIV It is not an overstatement to say that the nation Americans woke up to Nov. 9 is charted on a fundamentally different course than the day before. The differences in both temperament and in policy between the now President-elect Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton could hardly have been starker. For people living with or affected by HIV, the choice was between a woman who had been working to end the HIV epidemic for more than two decades as a First Lady, Senator and Secretary of State, and a man whose campaign didn’t have an HIV/AIDS policy. America chose the latter to be their next president, a decision that will force HIV advocates to confront some new and unexpected challenges. These challenges may be daunting, but they will not be insurmountable. We know this because we have been here before. And because of this, we know that we can succeed. Our roles as advocates for policies and rights are needed now more than ever. Making matters more difficult for those working to promote the health and well-being of people living with HIV is the fact that, in addition to winning the White House, the Republican Party held onto control of Congress. The GOP lost only two seats in the Senate with Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) defeating incumbents Mark Kirk (R-IL) and Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) and six seats in the House of Representatives. Republicans will have control of both the Executive and Legislative branches of the federal government for at least the next two years. In addition, the continued uncertainty surrounding President Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland to replace Antonin Scalia and the advanced ages of Justices Breyer, Ginsberg and Kennedy leave the ideological leanings of the court very much in doubt. What does this mean for U.S. health care and HIV policy? It’s hard to know for sure, but based on President-elect Trump’s recently released plan for his first 100 days in office and remarks from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, one of the first actions that the Trump administration and Republican-led Congress will likely take on is one that the GOP has been trying in vain to do for six years now: to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The days of President Obama’s signature piece of legislation may be numbered and, although a full repeal of the ACA is unlikely given the Republican Party’s slim majority in the Senate, the fallout for people living with or vulnerable to HIV will be significant.

Using the Restoring Americans’ Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act of 2015 that was passed by the House, but vetoed by President Obama last year as a template, we can be relatively certain a Trump administration would aim to roll back Medicaid expansion, eliminate the individual health insurance mandate and get rid of subsidies to help middle-income families purchase health insurance. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the repeal of the portions of the ACA outlined in the Restoring Americans’ Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act of 2015 would leave an additional 22 million Americans without health coverage. With the partial repeal of the Affordable Care Act on the horizon, it is impossible to overstate how important the Ryan White Care Act is to the health of people living with HIV in America. Now, more than ever, it is incumbent upon us to defend the Ryan White Program with every ounce of energy at our disposal. Without the ACA, the Ryan White Program will be the primary safety net for hundreds of thousands of people living with HIV. Under a Trump administration and a Republican Congress, we must prepare ourselves to protect the Ryan White Care Act, because it very well might be threatened. Attempts to flat fund or cut funding to the Ryan White Program are likely during the next two to four years and it is up to us as HIV advocates to stem the advance of those who threaten to limit access to HIV treatment and support services. For three decades, the HIV movement has fought tirelessly to emerge from a place of hopelessness and chaos to one of strength and transformative power. Whether you’ve been fighting for the rights and welfare of people living with or affected by HIV since the epidemic’s inception or are new to the cause, we all have the responsibility to stand up and demand that our government be accountable to those that they might otherwise ignore or disenfranchise. We have every right to expect a federal response that promotes the health of all Americans, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race, creed or health status. No matter what the response of the next administration and Congress, we must remain a united coalition that will do anything and everything that is needed to serve people living with and affected by HIV.

Dancing in the dark There are dark days ahead with the Trump/Pence team taking office. As they begin to erode our inalienable rights, let’s hope that dancing is not high on the list. We can all breathe a sigh of relief that neither Trump nor P e n c e is smart enough to decipher the name of electro-pop band STRFKR. Otherwise, Trump might add the band the list of those owing him an apology for imagined insults. With its Norman Rockwell homage cover art and perspective of finding our collective place in the universe, the band’s fifth full-length album Being No One, Going Nowhere (Polyvinyl) does an admirable job of keeping listeners thinking and dancing at the same time. And dance they will to alluring numbers such as “When I’m With You,” “Satellites,” “Never Ever,” “Something Ain’t Right,” “Open Your Eyes” and the aptly named, albeit luminescent, “Dark Days.” Canadian singer/songwriter Martina Sorbara pulled off one of the most fascinating musical reinventions when she switched gears to become lead vocalist (and cosongwriter) for the electro outfit known as Dragonette. It was a smart move, especially with the steady increase in attention being paid to electronic music. Royal Blues (Dragonette, Inc.), Dragonette’s fourth full-length in under 10 years, packs on persuasive beats and memorable tunes, including “Sweet Poison,” “Lost Teenagers,” “Secret Stash,” “Let The Night Fall,” and the Daft Punky “Darth Vader.” Dragonette even dabbles in retro pop on “High Five.” 26

On its third album Two Vines (Astralwerks), Australian electronic dance duo Empire of the Sun continues to work its musical spell, not straying too far from its trademark style that recalls the Pet Shop Boys (minus the queer energy), in both the audio and visual capacities. “Before” and “High And Low” set the dancing mood, and songs such as the wonderful “Way To Go,” “Friends,” “Ride” and “First Crush” keep bodies in motion. “ZZZ” and “To Her Door” provide hints at the kinds of diversions also afoot in the pair’s empire.
Of Montreal leader Kevin Barnes has long been coy about his sexuality. Married and divorced, Barnes’s 1999 breakthrough album with Of Montreal was titled The Gay Parade. “Let’s Relate,” the EDM song that opens the new Of Montreal disc Innocence Reaches (Polyvinyl) poses the musical question “How do you identify/how do you ID?” It’s an interesting query in an attention-grabbing tune. “It’s Different For Girls,” not to be confused with the Joe Jackson song of the same name is another hip-shaker, as is the funky “My Fair Lady,” the spare “Def Pacts,” and the glitchy “Trashed Exes.” Of Montreal also goes retro-glam as all get out on “Gratuitous Abysses.”

If you remember Since I Left You, the excellent and sample-adelic 2000 debut album by The Avalanches with fondness then you can’t help but be disappointed after waiting almost 16 (!) years for its follow-up, Wildflower (Astralwerks). Opportunities for dancing aren’t as plentiful as they were on these musical collagists’ first album, but you can still get in some rump shaking on “Subways,” the tasty hip-hop of “The Noisy Eater” (featuring Biz Markie) or “Saturday Night Inside Out.” Ultimately, Wildflower works better as chill-out music or as a game in which listeners can try to identify the obscure samples.
For as long as most people can remember, dance music has had an unbreakable link to the queer community. It was always a bonus when it was an actual LGBT person making the music, as in the case of, say, Sylvester or Bronski Beat. Alpha (darioonline.com), the EP, by indie gay performer Dario includes at least one dance-worthy tune, “Try It!,” which could go over well with the suitable remix. Meanwhile, pansexual (Google it) diva Aston is all about the dance moves as you can hear on the single “Circles,” as well as on “Pulse” and “Freak (Dance With Me),” from her debut EP.

Confirmation (HBO Home Entertainment) – Kerry Washington was nominated for an Emmy Award for her portrayal of Anita Hill, the former Judge Clarence Thomas colleague who testified against him for sexual harassment during his nomination hearings. House of Cards (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) – The complete fourth season, chapters 40 through 52, of the popular Netflix series stars Golden Globe winners Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright as the only political couple more frightening than Karl Rove and Dick Cheney.
For gay eyes (and others): LGBT films and film festivals, as well as television shows, continue to be a source of inspiration for all who see them.
Created by gay filmmaker Andrew Haigh (Weekend and 45 Years), the short-lived but loved San Francisco-set HBO series Looking (HBO Home Entertainment), starring Jonathan Groff, Frankie J. Alvarez, Russell Tovey, Daniel Franzese, Lauren Weedman, Raul Castillo and Scott Bakula, ended after only two seasons. A 2016 movie reunited the characters for a final farewell. Kamikaze ’89 (Film Movement) – The late gay filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder stars as police lieutenant Jansen in Wolf Gremm’s 1982 film adaptation of Per Wahlöö’s 1964 novel Murder on the 31st Floor. Holding The Man (Strand Releasing) – Based on the memoir by Timothy Conigrave, and starring Guy Pearce, Geoffrey Rush and Anthony LaPaglia, Neil Armfield’s film follows the 15 year relationship of two gay men.
For the artistically inclined: Art and artists have a long history of being interesting subjects for movies.
Hockney (Film Movement) – Randall Wright’s David Hockney doc follows the artist from the height of his British Pop Art scene success to his later struggles, particularly during the AIDS era. Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict (Music Box Films/Submarine Deluxe) – From Lisa Immordino Vreeland (Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel) comes this celebration of the heiress who “became a central figure in the modern art movement.” Francophonia (Music Box Films) – Combining documentary with drama, Alexander Sokurov (Russian Ark) offers viewers his own “personal exploration of the profound cultural legacy” of the Nazi occupation of France during World War II. Working with visionary directors including Anton Corbijn, D.A. Pennebaker, Julien Temple, Stephane Sednaoui and others, Depeche Mode created some of the most memorable music videos in the history of the medium. The triple DVD Video Singles Collection (Columbia/Sire/Warner Brothers) compiles 55 definitive video and includes new audio commentary from the band.

More Suitcase Memories at Jericho Library On Sunday afternoon, November 6, 2016 at 2:00pm, a white spot poured
across a Steinway grand piano located center stage. Soon, the first few notes were heard, and Lydia Sabosto began to transcend the room. Sabosto, with her one of a kind smile greeted the audience and opened with the theme from the motion picture Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory that was easily identified as “Pure Imagination”. She took firm hold and like a whirlwind brought the audience through a kind of musical time warp. Beginning with the back to Broadway segment, she played medleys from Hello Dolly, Seesaw and a more recent showcase of songs from Beautiful, the new Carol King musical currently playing on Broadway. With interesting, factual tidbits between songs, Sabosto told stories from her suitcase of memories. It was in that instant, which she managed in her very own stylized way to capture both the attention and hearts of everyone listening. Songs performed included Aretha Franklin’s Natural Woman, One Fine Day by the Shirelles, ending with a James Taylor song You’ve Got A Friend. Also, among the mix was a Carpenter medley in which Ms. Sabosto brilliantly incorporated such pleasantries and familiar tunes such as Ticket To Ride, Close To You, We’ve Only Just Begun, For All We Know, A Kind of Hush, concluding with that ever-upbeat number full of optimism entitled Sing.
If all the above weren’t enough, assembled spectators were treated to a sing a long while attendees applauded old time standards like the Nearness of You, As Time Goes By, Fly Me to the Moon, I’ve Got You Under My Skin, Teach Me Tonight, You Can’t Take That Away From Me, What A Difference A Day Makes, and finally You’re Nobody ‘til Somebody Loves You. Listeners who love Barbara Streisand were most happy to hear back-stories and funny asides that followed Lydia doing Barbara’s version of What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life, and a most memorable film theme from The Way We Were. The last song in the set was Second Hand Rose, which tied it all together and lifted spirits in the room with its fast pace rhythm, finger snapping, toe tapping beat. Next, the Beatie tribute won over those who could harken back to the 60’s with fond admiration for a medley comprised of I Want To Hold Your Hand, and In My Life. Both tunes were the precursor to the last quarter of the program’s presentation. In this final segment, patrons were delightfully introduced to a Barry Manilow sound a like named Richard Fisichella. Currently, Fisichella is involved in a new project directed by Bob Maletta and musically directed and produced by Lydia Sabosto. The musical tribute entitled “Even Now” showcases a multitude of songs Manilow is best known for and is sung by Mr. Fisichella. Today, we were fascinated by the remarkable resemblance in voice, tone and style when comparing Richard Fisichella and Mr. Barry Manilow. Singing two songs combined and arranged by Ms. Sabosto, andy and Could This Be Magic was just that! It was pure Magic! Mr. Fisichella, made it look so easy with his smooth, calm, velvety tones that we usually associate with Barry Manilow. Richard’s performance today would have been the envy of the original recording artist. Tickets for the January 21, 2017 “Even Now” performance to take place at 8:00pm are on sale for $20.00 and can be obtained by contacting the Clare Rose Playhouse Performing Arts Theatre located at 155 W. Roe Blvd. Patchogue, New York 11772, or by calling the box office. Before the curtain rang down, Ms. Sabosto wowed the crowd with her final song What the World Needs Now, and a heart filled encore Love Me With All Your Heart. Ms. Sabosto thanked Phyllis Cox ,Theatre Arts Director and Coordinator at the Jericho Library, as well as crewmembers Eveline Marcello and Margie Luciano. All had a great afternoon of fine entertainment.

INGREDIENTS:
• 1½ cups flour • 2 tablespoons ground ginger • 2 teaspoons cinnamon • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves • 1½ cups butter
with Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting
• 1 cup sugar • ½ cup brown sugar • 3 tablespoons molasses • 4 eggs, at room temperature • 1½ teaspoons vanilla • 4 cups powdered sugar

4 ounces cream cheese, softened 1 tablespoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon vanilla 2-4 tablespoons heavy cream
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 350 and line muffin tins with cupcake liners. Whisk together flour, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Set aside. In a another, large bowl cream together butter and sugars until pale and fluffy. Add molasses, beat until combined. Add eggs, beating after each until incorporated. Beat in vanilla. Gradually mix in flour mixture until combined. Divide batter evenly among the lined cups, filling each ¾ full. Bake about 25 minutes until an inserted toothpick comes out clean. Allow to cool in the muffin tins for about 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely. When cupcakes are completely cooled, prepare the frosting. Beat the cream cheese until fluffy (about 2 minutes). Add vanilla, cinnamon, and 2 tablespoons of heavy cream and mix until smooth. Gradually mix in powdered sugar. Add 1-2 more tablespoons of heavy cream as needed to thin the frosting to a spreadable consistency. Spread on cooled cupcakes. Store in airtight container.

30 crushed peppermint hard candies, divided 1 ½ pounds milk chocolate candy, coarsely chopped 1 ½ pounds white chocolate, chopped 1 teaspoon oil-based peppermint flavoring, or to taste

INGREDIENTS:
• 3 eggs, lightly beaten • 1/3 cup white sugar • salt to taste • 2 ½ cups milk • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 cup heavy cream
DIRECTIONS:
• 2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract • ½ cup rum (optional) • 1 pinch ground nutmeg
In a heavy saucepan, combine eggs, white sugar, and salt; gradually stir in milk. Stirring constantly, cook for 10 to 15 minutes over medium heat, until mixture just coats a metal spoon. Remove from heat, and stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Place saucepan over ice water until custard cools, and then refrigerate until chilled. In a chilled bowl, combine heavy cream, confectioners’ sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract. Beat until stiff peaks form. Stir in rum and yellow food coloring. Fold whipped cream mixture into the cooled custard. Pour into serving bowl, and sprinkle with nutmeg. Serve immediately.
DIRECTIONS:
Spread 1/3 of the peppermint candy over a 9x13-inch baking pan lined with wax paper. Melt the milk chocolate in the top of a double boiler over justbarely simmering water, stirring frequently and scraping down the sides with a rubber spatula to avoid scorching, just until melted. Pour the melted chocolate over peppermint candy in the prepared pan. Sprinkle another 1/3 of the candy on top of the milk chocolate. Refrigerate until the chocolate hardens, about 30 minutes. Melt the white chocolate in the top of a double boiler over justbarely simmering water, stirring frequently and scraping down the sides with a rubber spatula to avoid scorching. Stir in the oil-based peppermint flavoring. Pour the white chocolate over the milk chocolate, then spread the remaining 1/3 peppermint candy on top. Refrigerate until the white chocolate hardens, about 30 minutes. Cut or break into pieces to serve.
