Congress’ Response To Orlando Shooting Is To Try To Legalize Discrimination

[Think Progress] One month ago on Tuesday, a gunman shot and killed 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. House Republicans plan to mark this milestone with a hearing on a bill that would enable widespread discrimination against LGBT people. The legislation, ironically named the “First Amendment Defense Act” (FADA) rests on the idea that discrimination should be excused when it is justified by religion. Under, the core provision of FADA “the Federal Government shall not take any discriminatory action against a person, wholly or partially on the basis that such person believes or acts in accordance with” a religious objection to marriage equality or a faith-based belief that sexual relations must be reserved to a marriage between people of the opposite sex. Subsequent provisions define the term “discriminatory action” to include a broad range of sanctions against religious objectors who themselves engage in discrimination. The government cannot deny tax subsidies to religious objectors who discriminate against LGBT people, or deny them a grant or benefit, or, under a catch-all provision, “otherwise discriminate against such person.”

Massachusetts, the GayRights State Took Years to Protect trans Citizens [The Atlantic] Massachusetts was the first state in America to issue wedding licenses to same-sex couples. Gay marriage has been legal there for more than 12 years—much longer than in most other places. In 1989, it became the second state, after Wisconsin, to pass discrimination protections for lesbian, gay, and bisexual citizens. Massachusetts’s new law has advanced transgender rights, but the long struggle to get it passed presages tough times ahead for the rest of the country’s legislatures. Massachusetts is an outlier. It was an outlier in 2004 when its courts kicked off same-sex marriage. It’s still an outlier in 2016: Although its transgender-right reforms are coming late, in other states, it’s unclear that they’re coming at all.

Anti-Gay Airbnb Host Cancels Gay Man's Booking, Says LGBT People Are "Against Humanity" Air BnB terminates anti-gay hosts room for rent. A company policy against discrimination didn’t keep an Airbnb host from canceling a gay customer’s reservation, claiming LGBT people are “against humanity” — in a city with a progressive reputation, at that, reports the Advocate. “Buddy Fisher of Houston was using Airbnb to find a place to stay in Austin during the Texas capital’s Pride observance in late August, Houston TV station KHOU reports. He booked a room Wednesday that had an ideal location and great views of the city, and in response to a query about the purpose of his trip, he said he was going to Austin for the Pride festivities. About an hour later, he got a notice that his reservation was canceled, plus this message from his prospective host: “No LGBT people, please. I do not support people who are against humanity. Sorry.”

Republicans to consider warming up to the LGBT community

With the Republican National Convention less than two weeks away, moderate Republicans are drafting an amendment that would soften the GOP's official position on gays and lesbians, according to CBS News. “The party's official stance on LGBT issues will be debated during next week's meeting of the RNC's platform committee, a 112-member group of Republican activists from around the country.”

(Chairman Reince Priebus bangs the gavel to signal the end of the general session of the Republican National Committee’s spring meeting)

Mississippi’s Extreme ‘HB2 law’ nixed No great shock seemed to follow a federal judge’s ruling that stopped implementation of a Mississippi law considered the most extreme form of anti-lgbt legislation. U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves found the law – which allowed people to refuse services to people citing their personal religious beliefs, meaning a baker could refuse to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple, or counselors could deny services to a same-sex couple – “does not honor the tradition of religious freedom, nor does it respect the equal dignity of all of Mississippi’s citizens.” Reeves stopped the law from going into effect on schedule last week that sanctioned discrimination under the guise of "protecting religious freedom."

Jigglypuff recruited by Westboro Baptist Church, LGBT community Readies for Battle Pokémon style Pokémon GO, a new digital app, allows users to tell the infamous Westboro Baptist Church where to go. With love, of course. According to reports, the “Westboro Baptist Church is marked as a ‘gym’ in Pokémon Go. This in turn means that players can park their Pokémon at that location IRL to defend a digital title. In this case, someone thought it would be funny to put in a fairy type Pokémon as the defender of a place known for being very hateful and intolerant. “Since then, it is unclear on whether or not the Clefairy has remained in the Westboro Baptist Church gym — the initial “combat power” was low enough that anyone could easily knock it out. Regardless, it seems that the trolling news has reached Westboro itself, and they’ve taken to social media to issue a response.” The church struck back via social media as well.

Trans rights highlighted Bermuda Bill To Block Same Sex at Paris Pride parade Marriage Passes In House The Human Rights Amendment 2016 — which seeks to maintain marriage as being defined as between a man and a woman passed in Bermuda’s lower house despite vocal opposition. A total of 20 Members of Parliament voted in favor of the amended Bill with ten voting against it in the British Island territory.

The annual Pride parade in Paris, known as Marche des Fiertés, which took place in the French capital in July attracted thousands of LGBT denizens including a plethora of usual characters: Street performers in PVC cat suits, demented nuns, dancing cowboys and sailors and bellydancing transsexuals. But for the first time ever, Inter-LGBT, the group that organized the annual event, allotted the most prominent spot in the parade, which is usually reserved for politicians and celebrities, to emphasize trans rights. The Gay and Trans Collective Association for Equality, an LGBT group known by the French acronym ACTHE, marched front and center. The move case a light on the issues facing the transgender community with this year’s motto: “The rights of trans people are in a state of emergency: Stop forced sterilizations! Stop violence! Stop insecurity!”

LGBT Network and NY Mets Announce First Pride Night August 13 Proceeds To Support Anti-Bullying in LI and NYC Schools

Thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) baseball fans will fill Citi Field on Saturday August 13th when the New York Mets take on the San Diego Padres at 7:10pm for the 1st ever Pride Night in New York major sports professional history. The LGBT Network has teamed up with Major League Baseball and The New York Mets to put on this historic event at the home of the defending National League Champions! Tickets for Pride Night are on sale now at mets.com/pride.

Billy Bean VP, Social Responsibility & Inclusion, MLB's Office of the Commissioner, said, "Congratulations to the New York Mets and the LGBT Network of Long Island/Queens for working together to create this special event at Citi Field. Mets fans encompass every demographic that make up the great city of New York. It makes me very proud to see their organization display such a powerful example of inclusion, and a message of acceptance for anyone who loves the game of baseball.”

Pride Night at Citi Field will support an important cause. A portion of each ticket sale purchased at mets.com/pride will support the LGBT Network’s anti-bullying programs in Long Island and New York City schools.

"Respect, dignity and fairness are the hallmarks of good sportsmanship, and they will be the marquee message at the very first LGBT Pride Night at Citi Field here in Queens. Thank you to the LGBT Network for launching this initiative and for the great work they continue to do on behalf of the community. Deep appreciation to Major League Baseball for elevating the message of inclusion to the home field for the benefit of anti-bullying programs in our schools. On LGBT Pride Night, Citi Field will certainly be rooting for both our home team and for Pride," said Queens Borough President Melinda Katz.

The New York tri-state area is home to an estimated 2 million LGBT residents and families who have long felt left out and not safe in major league ballparks and arenas. David Kilmnick, LGBT Network CEO, said "Bullying is still a major league problem for LGBT youth. Over 82 percent report being verbally and physically harassed in the past year. It’s not only the school hallways where our young people report feeling unsafe, but also on the ball field. We are grateful and thankful to Major League Baseball for taking the lead in professional sports including the LGBT community in its diversity priorities and initiatives. As a life-long Mets fan, I am proud that the New York Mets are not only the defending National League Champions, but the champion of the New York sports world in making sure that everyone is welcomed and celebrated at Citi Field." In a statement, Mets Executive Vice President/Chief Revenue Officer Lou DePaoli said, "New York is the most diverse and inclusive city in the world, and the Mets welcome all fans throughout the season. We are particularly proud to welcome the LGBT community on Pride Night at Citi Field.”

Tales From Beyond the Tracksuit

By Chris Azzopardi

Jane Lynch talks life after Glee, Catholic guilt and crushing on Susan Sarandon You better believe Jane Lynch can sing, and even if you don’t, “I think by the time you buy the ticket and come to the show, you hope I can sing! You’ve got your fingers crossed!” the Glee alum says of her touring act See Jane Sing, cracking her signature booming laugh. Lynch is best known as iconic cheer coach Sue Sylvester, who tormented McKinley High for six seasons of Fox’s musicaldramedy behemoth Glee, which brimmed with all sorts of songs – just not many sung by Lynch herself. There was, of course, the playful homage to Madonna, when Lynch donned black lace for a frame-by-frame remake of the Queen’s video “Vogue.” But on Glee, the 55-year-old Emmy winner was better known for her tyrannical outbursts and hair taunts (poor Mr. Schuester) than she was for breaking into song. Now, Lynch is making up for lost time as she headlines See Jane Sing, the entertainer’s touring cabaret that merges comedy with music and also features Kate Flannery of The Office and Tim Davis, the music director of Glee. After resolving a shoddy phone connection (“Where are you? Iraq covering the war?”), Lynch spoke at length about how her cabaret is not a “live sex show” like Liza’s, the one man she’d go straight for (and the one woman she’d stay gay for), and what’s so funny about three white people performing Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda.” Do you read reviews? Ummm, good question! I have for this show, yes. The reason being is because I’m confident (laughs). I don’t think anybody could say anything about it, me or anybody in it that would actually stick. I don’t think they could say anything bad because I’m very confident in it; it’s such a blast that it stands alone as an experience for me without having anybody telling me it’s good or bad. The reason I ask is because I read a New York Times review from 2014. It was awesome, wasn’t it?

14

LIVING OUT

It was! They noted the show’s “sexual subtext.” I haven’t seen the show yet, but I’m curious about this “sexual subtext.” Yeah, I am too! I’m curious about it too! (Laughs) I think what they might have been talking about is: Cheyenne Jackson, a wonderfully talented man who also happens to be gay, did “Something Stupid” that night with me. It was a special thing and he came up and we sang the song “Something Stupid,” and he talked about this weird kind of sexual tension between the two of us, because I think he’s so attractive and so handsome and I get very confused about my sexuality when I’m in the presence of Cheyenne Jackson. When I’m watching Cheyenne Jackson I know that I am 100 percent homosexual, no question about it. Isn’t that wonderful? I feel that way about Susan Sarandon, though she probably wouldn’t, you know, receive my affection… well, she’d receive it, but she might not return it. What was your introduction to cabaret? Well, let’s see, I’ve been in theater for a long time. I go see people perform, whether it’s at a hole in the wall or it’s a chick with a guitar. I usually don’t like big rock concerts – I don’t seek those out – so the combination of doing a comedy show with music has always been something I loved. I used to do sketch comedy a lot before I started doing television and film, and we always found a way to put a song in there. I did a “one person” show and I put the quotes there because there were three other people in there; it was all my material, but I had other people in it and we had six or seven songs in it and I love that. I don’t play a character so much, but Kate is my inappropriate drunken sidekick and we have a particular thing that I think is very entertaining and a lot of fun. She’s the glue of the evening for me and I’m so lucky to have her. So your introduction to cabaret was not Liza’s Cabaret? Oh, that – well, that’s a whole different thing. That was almost like a live sex show in Nazi Germany! It’s funny, I think we call (this show) a cabaret and it’s kind of stuck with the show because we did it at 54 Below (in New York). It’s where one

person stands there with their band and people come to eat and listen, so when I say cabaret, it’s a live performance comedy concert. (Laughs) Were you a funny kid? Yeah, I was a funny kid and that was one thing I always knew I had. You know how you’re insecure as a kid? I was like, “Well, I know I’m funny.” So you used that to your advantage? Yeah, I guess so. You know, sometimes I felt like I was just trying to survive, as I think a lot of kids feel, having the big gay secret and all that stuff. I feel like when you’re a kid – for a lot of kids anyway – it’s about trying to survive and stay under the radar of humiliation so people don’t sniff you out. Did humor help you survive, then, as a kid? Oh yeah, absolutely. How did you know you were funny and when did you realize you could make a living being funny? I never set out to do that. I love mining things for the comedy and, of course, that attracts people who love doing that as well. I had this one hilarious friend in high school, Christopher, who’s still a friend, and we did nothing but laugh together. The silliness of the social hierarchies – we would watch those and we laughed about those. We laughed about everything; nothing was too sacred. And we were Catholic kids too! We laughed about the priests and the congregation. So, if you’re allowing your passion to lead you, you end up making money at it, which is a great thing! (Laughs) But I didn’t set out to do it. I really just set out to laugh.

For a while there, you were performing in church basements. Yeah – a lot of them! The churches would rent out their basement just to make some money and they didn’t care what kind of show you were doing. They didn’t show up; you just paid the 50 bucks and you set up the lights and that’s what ya did. Is it true that, when you ended up at Second City, you were one of only two women picked to join the troupe? Well, that wasn’t unique. There were only two women in every company. Now, it’s three. So it wasn’t a unique thing. Every company had two women and four guys and now it’s three and three. It wasn’t like I was only one of two women in the entire history of Second City. I know in some press release it says that, or something online says “she was chosen,” but no, it’s not a big deal. All the girls were one of two women. Now they’re one of three women. Did it feel unfair to you that the men and women weren’t equal in number? Nah, I didn’t have eyes for that stuff. I really didn’t. I didn’t see that stuff. I wasn’t available to feeling less than in that way. It just didn’t happen for me. Assuming you’re taking a bus on tour, what kind of music do you listen to on the road? Oh no, we’re not on a bus, man. Dude, we are flying. We do this first class – that’s why I’m not making any money on this tour! We fly. I said, “I’m not gonna do it if I have to sit in a bus,” so we fly and we all fly together, although Kate and I do fly first class and I make a joke about it in the show – another reason why I’m not making any money on this tour. But we all fly together and we hang out. We all eat together, laugh together, so I’m not listening to music or anything. I’m not a listener to music – I don’t listen to it very much. But Kate does, and Kate and I have very much the same taste. So, when we’re getting ready – we have a dressing room together – she plays Burt Bacharach songs. She has a terrific library of Burt Bacharach songs, not just by Burt Bacharach, but by all sorts of groups like The Carpenters and we sing at the top of our lungs and that’s our little pre-show warmup. How did Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” end up on the setlist? I had a burst of inspiration! I thought, “Wouldn’t it be funny if we did this?” First of all, I think it’s one of the most amazing, hilarious and artful videos I have ever seen. It is so funny. She is sooo self-deprecating, and she’s so kind of pinned this character – this rich girl who’s from the hood who has no class who all of a sudden is hanging out with drug dealers and having access to Balmain and nice clothes and a nice car. She just nails it. So, I thought, “Wouldn’t it be fucking hilarious if me, Kate and Tim” – I mean we look like the Heritage Singers out there! We’re so white, so immaculately white, and all three of us cannot dance at all but have all the confidence in the world in our moves. Looking back on Glee: The show changed a lot of queer kids’ lives, and if I had been younger, it really would’ve influenced me in a major way. Right; me too!

If a show like Glee had been on when you were a young gay person, how might your life have been different? Ahh, it would’ve showed me that I wasn’t alone, and oh, just to know that you’re not alone. I really thought I had a mental disease that I was never gonna be able to get over, that I was cursed with it, that it was my fault. LIVING OUT

What do you remember from working with Jennifer on Best in Show? It was a first-time experience for both of us, and we were both very nervous. We were shooting it in Vancouver and we got very close. The days we weren’t working we would take walks through Stanley Park, and she is one of those people who can make me laugh so hard that I can’t catch my breath. She renders my mind inert. I can’t do anything but hold whatever spot I’m at and just double over and try to catch my breath. Has there ever been a role you regretted not taking? I can’t even think of one. I’m so in the moment, man. I don’t think about that stuff. I can’t even remember turning something down and I can’t even remember – I don’t remember most things. (Laughs) Photo Courtesy of Jane Lynch

Catholic guilt? Yes, yeah! And I don’t know where I got this, because my parents weren’t Catholic in that way. We went to church but they weren’t like, “This is bad; this is good.” They just weren’t that way. They were very relaxed, not very good Catholics except that they went to church every Sunday. In saying that they weren’t very good Catholics – they were really good people! (Laughs) I get it. They weren’t devout. Exactly. So, I don’t know where I got that it was so horrible, maybe just by the fact that it was whispered about, if it was spoken about at all. And I didn’t see one person in my trajectory of life that had it! (Laughs) I was completely alone in it, so for me to have a Glee, and I’m sure I speak perhaps for you and a lot of other gay people growing up in the ’70s and the ’80s, a Glee would’ve been so wonderful – oh, how great that would’ve been.

"Sometimes I felt like I was just trying to survive, as I think a lot of kids feel, having the big gay secret and all that stuff."

Did you feel that, when Glee ended in 2015, it was time? Yeah, sure. Absolutely. You know, these things can’t go on forever. We have this thing in American television that you have to be on for 10 years or something, and I think the British have it right. The British do 13 episodes and then take a holiday. Does the cast keep in touch? Are you and Matthew Morrison still close? I do talk to Matthew, yeah. And my niece was assistant to one of our executive producers and she’s friends with all those folks, so I see them and they come over to my house and we make dinner and sit out on the porch. I was gonna say, “What’s a post-Glee party at Jane’s house like?” (Laughs) Well, they don’t talk about Glee, that’s for sure! They’ve all kind of moved on, but they’re very good friends. It was a bonding experience for them – for all of them. You have Mascots coming up for Netflix, and it’s directed by Christopher Guest, who also did Best in Show with you. What was it like teaming with Jennifer Coolidge again after playing her butch lesbian personal dog handler in Best in Show? Well, I didn’t work with her; I haven’t even seen her. I worked with Ed Begley Jr., Mike Hitchcock and Parker Posey, so I didn’t even get to see her. I can’t wait to see her at the premiere. Photo Courtesy of Jane Lynch 16

Shut up and dance A kind of hipster electro supergroup, if you will, Phases features Z Berg (of The Like), Alex Greenwald (of Phantom Planet), Jason Boesel (of Bright Eyes) and Michael Runion. From its album cover graphics to its synth beats and instrumentation, the quartet’s debut disc For Life (WB) sounds like it could have been recovered from a 1980s archaeological dig. “Betty Blue,” “I’m In Love With My Life,” “Silhoutte” and “I Don’t Know What’s Right” are definite highlights. One of the most inescapable songs of 2015, Walk The Moon’s “Shut Up and Dance,” from the band’s second album Talking Is Hard (RCA), made the group something of a household name. Embraced by the folks who dig Neon Trees and Imagine Dragons, people who don’t mind rock aimed at both their heads and booties. All in all, a fun affair and an easy listen, Walk The Moon proudly wears its `80s new wave/dance influences on its novelty t-shirt sleeves on song such as “Sidekick,” “Avalanche,” “Portugal,” “Work This Body,” “We Are The Kids,” “Aquaman,” and the vintage U2 guitar sound of the aforementioned hit single.

If you love the sexy simmering electro vibe of The xx but wished that the beats were cranked up and just a bit more plentiful than you will surely swoon when you hear In Colour (Young Turks), the solo disc by Jamie xx (aka Jamie Smith of The xx). Far from a traditional EDM release (whew!), the songs on the multi-hued album encourage dancing at a variety of speeds. The shambling “Sleep Sound” challenges your feet while keeping your hands busy before it spills into the teeter tottering “SeeSaw,” a song that will move you up and down and all around (featuring The xx’s queer lead singer Romy on vocals). “Obvs” slows things down with an island breeze while “Hold Tight” picks up the pace in preparation for the return of Romy on “Loud Places,” a nod to vintage disco filtered through modern ears. 24

Coldplay performs on July 17 in NYC at Met Life Stadium. Coldplay has been hinting at its inner dance diva for years and on A Head Full of Dreams (Atlantic/Parlophone), the band delivers some of its most dance-floor ready tunes. The title cut and “Adventure of a Lifetime,” in particular, are geared to club play and should have no trouble packing in the dancers. There’s also the lightly funky “Hymn For The Weekend,” featuring Beyoncé, and “Army Of One.” Of course, longtime Coldplay fans are sure to be pleased with “Fun” and “Birds.” Avicii and Rudimental made waves with their respective 2013 debut albums. Both have returned a couple of years later with sophomore releases, Stories (Island) and We The Generation (Atlantic/Big Beat), respectively. As he did previously, Avicii employs a series of guest vocalists and collaborators including Chris Martin (Coldplay), Alex Ebert, Matthew Miller (aka Matisyahu), Wyclef Jean, Gavin DeGraw, Zac Brown and Martin Garrix on Stories. On We The Generation, Rudimental continues to blend influences from the world of dance (check out the drum’n’bass action on “I Will For Love” and “Love Ain’t Just A Word,” the hot house of “Rumour Mill” and the modern dance pop of “Lay It All On Me” featuring Ed Sheeran) with R&B and world music. Empress of (aka Lorely Rodriguez) and Monika both do their part to expand the boundaries of dance music on their respective albums. Me (Terrible), Empress of’s full-length debut alternates between chillwave excursions such as “Standard,” “Kitty Kat” and “Make Up” and full-on dance-floor slammers including “Water Water,” “How Do You Do It,” “Need Myself” and “Threat,” making for a royally varied listening experience. Monika’s Secret In The Dark (Fat Possum/Other) shouldn’t stay a secret for long. “Shake Your Hands” will have you shaking more than those appendages. The title cut is a murky and funky retro riddle that deserves to be shared.

Carly Rae Jepsen probably wishes there was at least one song on her new album as exciting, original and unforgettable as anything on Every Open Eye (Glassnote/ Goodbye) by Chvrches. Lead singer Lauren Mayberry gives the 14 bright and bouncy tracks their loudly beating heart, filling them with genuine emotion. Take “Clearest Blue,” for example, the song from which the disc gets its title. The song has dance anthem written all over it – you can practically picture the dance-floor crowded with bodies jumping up and down. That same energy propels “Keep You On My Side,” “Empty Threat” and bonus track “Get Away.” Chvrches isn’t afraid to switch up the tempo either, as they demonstrate on “Never Ending Circles,” “Down Side of Me,” “Bury It” and “Afterglow.”

Women

IN THE LEAD

As more and more people get used to the idea that the U.S. might soon have its first woman President, now’s a good time as any to acknowledge some of the women in leadership roles in bands.

Released following Benjamin Curtis’ passing, SVIIB (Vagrant) by School of Seven Bells put surviving member Alejandra Deheza firmly in the lead. Collaborating with producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen and Curtis’ brother (and former Secret Machines band member) Brandon, Deheza was able to parse together SVIIB from existing material created before 26

Curtis’ death. Sounding like a 21st century Cocteau Twins concoction, most of the album is a refreshing and exciting take on modern dance music. “A Thousand Times More,” “Signals,” “Ablaze” and “Music Takes Me” are all potential dance-floor sensations. As you might expect, the mood turns mournful on occasion as in the case of “Confusion” (which is reminiscent of Julee Cruise’s collaborations with Angelo Badalamenti), “This Is Our Time” and “Elias.”

If you lapped up Lucius’ delicious 2013 debut album

Wildewoman than you are practically guaranteed to dig the band’s latest, Good Grief (Mom + Pop). The disc’s 11 tunes, co-written by Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, are a pleasurable experience. Kicking up the beats a bunch, Lucius embraces its inner `80s dance-pop diva on songs such as “Almost Makes Me Wish For Rain,” “Something About You,” “Truce” and the completely amazing one-two punch of “Almighty Gosh” and “Born Again Teen.” Lucius also confidently switches things up on “My Heart Got Caught On Your Sleeve” and “What We Have (To Change).” Play this one loud, you won’t be disappointed. If you prefer swing dancing to doing the Cabbage Patch then you’ll probably have a taste for NYC-based octet The Hot Sardines. Featuring vocals

If Conscious is something an invigorating dance-club workout, then Dreamland (Columbia) by Wild Belle, consisting of sister Natalie Bergman and brother Elliott Bergman, is made for the afterhours chill-out experience. Not that the album isn’t without its upbeat energy, found on “Giving Up On You,” “Coyotes” and the Lorde-y “Throw Down Your Guns.” On the whole the flow of the disc is at a different pace than the Broods record, on songs such as “Mississippi River,” “It Was You (Baby Come Back To Me),” “Our Love Will Survive” and “The One That Got Away.” How to say this nicely? These Mad Dogs Need Heroes (EJRC) by The Everymen is at its most inviting and intriguing when Catherine Herrick is

singing lead. There! Herrick’s knock-you-down vocals on retro-rockers such as “Bridge and Tunnel of Love” and “Nick Lower,” as well as brassy rocker “Co-Dependent’s Day” and the blistering “Chum (Parts 1 & 2)” have an attention-grabbing vigor lacking in some of the other songs. Otherwise it feels generic at best.

Laura Weinbach, lead vocalist of Foxtails Brigade exhibits a magnetism similar to Herrick’s on the band’s eponymous third album onOIM. Like The Fiery Furnaces, Foxtails Brigade crafts non-traditional pop tunes, including “Dirtbagz and Dozers,” “We Are Not Ourselves,” “Long Route,” “Don’t Look Down” and “Far Away And Long Ago.” Fear not, “No Fate,” “Last Still Standing” and “Watch Me” are among the more immediately accessible songs. Summer Soul Men Every Maxwell studio album – and there have only been five in 20 years – is treated like an event of great musically historical significance. The neo-soul forefather’s latest, blackSUMMERS’night (Columbia) is no exception. Arriving seven years after its predecessor BLACKsummers’night, the 12-track disc doesn’t vary much from the formula that made what came before so appealing and enduring, including drawing on the influence of the late Prince. Maxwell looks towards club play with the soulfully sexy “All The Ways That Love Can Feel” which could benefit from just the right remix. In fact, Maxwell makes intriguing use of organic beats to drive home his message on “The Fall” and “III.” Retro soul and neo-soul blend throughout and are especially spellbinding on “Hostage,” “Gods,” “Fingers Crossed,” “Of All Kind” and the improvised-in-the-studio “Lost.”

out of y’all.” Keepin’ it classy, Kelly. If you aren’t too nauseated to continue listening then you’ll probably be able to stomach junk such as “Let’s Make Some Noise,” “Marching Band,” “Sextime” and “Get Out Of Here With Me.” Kelly actually zips his fly long enough to perform the vintage vibe of “All My Fault,” the only song worth hearing on the whole album. Life On Earth (eOne/MyBlock), the new studio disc from Musiq Soulchild is something of a disappointment. With the exception of the Stevie Wonder-ful “Change My Mind,” the uplifting soul-pop of “Alive And Well,” the JoiStaRR duet on “Part of Me” and the spacey title track, the album is generally a bore. One indistinguishable song after another makes life on earth as dull as dirt.

The perversely prolific R. Kelly is the excessive polar opposite of the reserved Maxwell. Even after having his name linked to various sexual scandals, Kelly doesn’t rein it in in the least. Instead he serves up the unappetizing The Buffet (RCA). Kelly should have his poetic license revoked for calling the embarrassing recitation that opens the disc “The Poem,” and then follows it with “Poetic Sex,” a song that includes the line, “My lyrics got a big dick and I just fucked the shit 28

Bilal performs on Aug. 25 at NJPAC in Newark

A Curtis Mayfield for the 21st century, Bilal is back with the exceptional In Another Life (eOne/Purpose). As forward-looking as he is respectful of his roots, Bilal effortlessly conjures modern and retro soul, often in the same song. Teaming up with acclaimed producer Adrian Younge, Bilal had made his most thrilling and evocative album. Beginning with the ominous “Sirens II,” In Another Life is a musical journey through time and textures. Both Marvin Gaye and Prince are summoned on “Pleasure Toy.” “Satellites” soars, “Lunatic” lives up to its name, the Kimbra duet “Holding It Back” delights and “Bury Me Next To You” brilliantly brings the disc to a close.

On the day that this review of Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals’ new album Call It What It Is (Stax) is being written, the country is reeling from the deaths of two African-American men – Alton Sterling and Philando Castile – at the hands of white police officers. The chorus of the title track of the disc, “call it what it is/murder,” a tragically timely blues number that mentions Trayvon Martin, Ezell Ford and Michael Brown by name while calling out “government, policing, hard times, oppression, racism, fear, suffering” could be the unintentional anthem of the summer and the election season. “How Dark Is Gone,” “Finding Our Way,” “Bones” and “Dance Like Fire” convey similar sentiments.

Admit it, the first time you heard the song “7 Years,” you thought, “Who could that brother be who is singing?” Admit it, when you found out that it was Lukas Graham, a bunch of white guys, from Denmark no less, you shook your head. Still, you have to give the band credit for sounding so convincingly blue eyedsoulful. In fact, most of Lukas Graham’s eponymous Warner Brothers disc does a spectacular job of sounding as black as it wants to be. Take “Mama Said,” for example, which, like Jay-Z did with “Hard Knock Life,” samples “It’s The Hard Knock Life” from Annie. There’s also a bit of Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” interpolated in “Better Than Yourself (Criminal Mind Pt. 2).” But it’s the sung-rap of “Happy Home,” classic R&B vibe of “Drunk In The Morning,” the Motown-y “Strip No More” and the bluesy “Funeral” that give the album it’s soul credibility.

On Stereotypes (Universal Classics/Deutsche Gramophon), violinists Kev Marcus and Wil Baptiste of Black Violin take classical and soul to a whole other level. The 11 originals and one cover (Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s “Walk On By”), most of which are sung by Baptiste, are examples of the ways in which different musical genres can coexist. Singer Melanie Fiona provides the vocals on “Send Me A Sign” and jazz pianist Robert Glasper can be heard on “Stay Clear.” Speaking of Glasper, on Everything’s Beautiful (Columbia/Blue Note/Legacy), he “reimagines” Miles Davis tunes with collaborators such as the aforementioned Bilal, as well as Stevie Wonder, Laura Mvula, Erykah Badu, King and Ledisi.

You might feel like your heart is going to pound its way through your chest, almost to the very last scene of writer/director Jeremy Saulnier’s riveting third full-length feature Green Room (A24/ Broadgreen), but it’s only a movie. Because of that, the film takes its place at the head of the class of the new generation of horror/ suspense flicks such as The Witch, It Follows and The Babadook.

Perhaps what’s most remarkable about Green Room is its prescience. Filmed before unstable Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump had fully ignited his hateful following, Green Room is equal parts message movie and horror story. Trump supporters give it three Ks! DVD+Digital special features include a “making of” featurette and audio commentary by writer/director Saulnier. When we last left our divergent heroine Tris (Shailene Woodley), in the crumbling dystopian remains of Chicago 100 or so years from now, she had handily disposed of ruthless Erudite leader Jeanine (think a smarter Donald Trump in a skirt) in 2015’s The Divergent Series: Insurgent. More determined than ever to discover what lies beyond the high and electrified wall (see: Trump) surrounding the city, Tris gathers a small team including love-interest Four (the ridiculously hot Theo James), repentant brother Caleb (Ansel Elgort), diabolical Peter (Miles Teller), and petite but powerful Christina (Zoe Kravitz) and begins her journey in The Divergent Series: Allegiant (Summit).

The Ain’t Rights, a young punk band from the Washington, DC (Arlington, actually, as one member points out) are scrambling to survive on tour, reduced to siphoning gas from other cars to fuel its van and playing shows to small crowds in Mexican restaurants. To make up for the latter, the quartet – Pat (the late Anton Yelchin), Sam (Alia Shawkat), Reece (Joe Cole) and lead vocalist Tiger (Callum Turner) – accepts an offer to play a better-paying opening act matinee gig from mohawked journalist/show promoter Tad (David W. Thompson), at a club where his cousin Daniel (Mark Webber) and Daniels’ girlfriend Emily (Taylor Tunes) are employed. Warned that the crowd might be a little on the right-wing skinhead side, the band is unprepared for how far to the right the white-power patrons lean. However, the swastika and SS graffiti and stickers emblazoned on the walls of the green room give them a better idea. Being the punks that they are, the Ain’t Rights open their set with the Dead Kennedys “Nazi Punks Fuck Off,” which, as you might imagine, doesn’t go over well with the crowd. Can things possibly get worse? You betcha!

Meanwhile, back in Chicago, Four’s mother Evelyn (Naomi Watts) who has become the de facto leader, attempting to share power with Allegiant head Johanna (Octavia Spencer), is not only unhappy that he has left with Tris, but also must deal with the rising tide of anger in the city (doesn’t seem like much has changed in the future Chicago). However, as Tris finds out when she meets with purity-obsessed David (Jeff Daniels), the man who governs the futuristic city in which the Bureau of Genetic Welfare operates, not everything is as it appears. As usual difficult choices, including the wrong ones, must be made, as allegiances are formed and broken. The special effects in The Divergent Series: Allegiant alternate between being cool and clever or downright laughable. You be the judge when it comes to the orange memory erasing serum fog. The energy level is at its lowest here, which contributes to the trouble. If you’re not thrilled with this installment (and it’s easy not to be), consider it to be a placeholder for the next chapter in the series, The Divergent Series: Ascendant, due to hit your local multiplex in June of 2017. Blu-ray+DVD+Digital HD exclusives and special features include half a dozen featurettes and audio commentary by producers Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher.

Just as the band is about to load out its equipment, Pat pops into the green room to fetch the mobile phone Sam left to charge, only to discover that Emily has been murdered. Her body’s surrounded by the members of the headlining band, as well as bouncer Big Justin (Eric Edelstein) and her friend Amber (Imogen Poots). An attempt to dial 911 goes awry and suddenly the band, along with witness Amber, finds itself being held captive until club owner and Fuhrer-figure Darcy (an ominous Patrick Stewart) arrives to straighten out the situation in his distinctive and destructive fashion. What follows is some of the most exhilarating suspense and stomachchurning gore to hit the screen in a long time. Handguns, shotguns, box cutters and machetes all play supporting roles. A pack of pit-bulls, trained to mutilate by Werm (Brent Werzner), also play a prominent part, although Green Room’s comment on the loyalty of dogs is as touching as it is terrifying.

POINTS OF VIEW

op-ed

by Joanne Borden

The First Amendment protects freedom of speech. Anyone

can say whatever they wish, without government interference. A basic truth, not stated in the Amendment, is you are free to say what you wish, but you are responsible for what you say. The popular example is shouting fire in a crowded theater when there is no fire. You can be prosecuted for the damage it causes. Another proof of the responsibility for what you say involves saying something that damages a person or a person’s reputation. In short, freedom of speech does not free you from being responsible for your words. Many people believe the Second Amendment gives people the right to bear arms (i.e., own a weapon). The missing link is not holding the weapon owner responsible for their weapon. Responsibility means civil and criminal responsibility. The Sandy Hook School shooter used his mother’s weapon. She is free to own the weapon, but not morally free to make her weapon available to her mentally unstable son. She was negligent with a lethal weapon, yet she goes scot free and without even criticism. She and other people, who want to own weapons, must be held responsible for their weapon’s use. We must do everything possible to insure those that own weapons secure them from unauthorized use. That means a weapon owner must keep it or vital parts of the mechanism “locked-up.” The best control would involve licensing people to own weapons and registering each weapon owned to that owner. It therefore follows that people not stable enough to be responsible (i.e., use a weapon responsibly), should not be given the privilege of a license. Also, I would not license a criminal. Licensing is called for, but not essential to the principle of responsibility. The fact that millions of guns are now in the hands of unknown people is not a reason to disregard instituting proper rules— responsibility. Time will bring compliance and people will apply for licenses because they generally desire to be law abiding! The fines that are levied on non-licensed weapon owners will convince non-compliers to comply. There is better control of the selling new weapons, because they legally would be saleable only to license holders.

ARMS, GUNS AND WEAPONS

Licensed or not, the owner must be responsible for negligence in securing their arm, gun and weapon from unauthorized use. Holding people responsible for exercising free speech is not an attack on the Amendment. It is logical. Holding people responsible for their weapon is not an attack on the Amendment. It is logical. Rights also imply responsibility. The automobile is a good example. You must be licensed to use one and if you own one, you are responsible for its use. Surely automobiles are less lethal than guns.
