After my diagnosis, it took me a while to accept the fact that being HIV-positive is not the end of the world: It’s just the beginning of a whole new way of life. The first meds I was prescribed gave me some bad side effects. But I worked with my doctors to find a new one that was better for me. Now I feel great and my viral count is undetectable. That list of things you wanted to accomplish before you were diagnosed? It’s still possible if you stay in care and work with your doctor to find the treatment that’s best for you.

STAGE WHILE STUDYING ABROAD IN COLLEGE, PERFORMING IN FRONT OF 80,000 AT THE INTERNATIONAL SOCA MONARCH FINALS IN TRINIDAD, INSPIRED RACHEL TO START CHASING WHAT SHE ONCE THOUGHT WAS AN IMPOSSIBLE DREAM.
GROWING UP IN BOSTON, RACHEL PLATTEN RECALLS HARMONIZING WITH HER FAMILY TO FINELY CRAFTED POP SONGS - FROM SAM COOKE TO THE BEATLES - THAT DOMINATED HER PARENTS’ VINYL COLLECTION. AS A TEENAGER, RACHEL GRAVITATED TOWARDS, AND BEGAN TO BECOME AFFECTED BY, HIP-HOP AND FEMALE SINGERSONGWRITERS. “MY CD COLLECTION WAS TORI AMOS AND PATTI GRIFFIN BUT THEN A TRIBE CALLED QUEST AND NAS.” THE COMMONALITY BETWEEN THE TWO SEEMINGLY DIFFERENT GENRES: CONFESSIONAL AND VULNERABLE SONGWRITING. AS A KID, RACHEL DREAMT ABOUT MUSIC AS A CAREER BUT NEVER REALLY THOUGHT IT COULD HAPPEN IN REAL LIFE. “I GREW UP PLAYING CLASSICAL PIANO AND I KNEW I COULD SING BUT I HAD NO MODEL TO FOLLOW CREATIVELY. THE IDEA OF GROWING UP TO BE AN ARTIST SEEMED IMPOSSIBLE.” HOWEVER, THE ELECTRICITY SHE FELT ON

AFTER FINISHING COLLEGE, RACHEL IMMEDIATELY SET OUT FOR NEW YORK CITY WHERE SHE TOOK UP RESIDENCE IN THE VERY APARTMENT BUILDING ON MACDOUGAL STREET IN GREENWICH VILLAGE WHERE BOB DYLAN ONCE LIVED. NATURALLY, SHE FOUND A BAND ON CRAIGSLIST AND STARTED PERFORMING IN CLUBS AROUND THE CITY. THOSE YEARS CONSISTED OF PAYING DUES THROUGH A MIX OF TEMPING DURING THE DAY AND GETTING FIRED A LOT, GIGGING UNTIL 4AM, AND LUGGING AN 80-POUND KEYBOARD TO HER FIFTH FLOOR WALK-UP NIGHT AFTER NIGHT. DESPITE THE STRUGGLE AND THE SETBACKS, RACHEL LOVED BEING ON STAGE, EVEN IF AT TIMES NOBODY WAS LISTENING. “I FELT CRAZY SOMETIMES THAT I STILL BELIEVED IN MYSELF WHEN THERE WERE NO SIGNS THAT I SHOULD.” DURING THIS TIME, A CONVERSATION WITH HER SOON TO BE MANAGER, BEN SINGER, HELPED REIGNITE HER PASSION. “BEN HELPED ME REALIZE THAT I HAD TO START MY OWN FIRE AND MY SONGS WOULD BE THE SPARKS.” RACHEL WOULD FIND HER FIRST BIG SPARK WITH “FIGHT SONG,” WHICH TOOK TWO YEARS FOR THE SINGER/ SONGWRITER TO COMPLETE. SHE TURNED INWARD BY TELLING
HER OWN STORY THROUGH THE SONG. TURNS OUT IT WAS JUST THE MESSAGE PEOPLE NEEDED. “THE REACTIONS WERE HONEST, AND INTENSE. PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SENDING ME THE MOST BEAUTIFUL STORIES OF HOW THEY REFUSE TO GIVE UP,” SHE RECALLS. “FIGHT SONG” IS WITHOUT A DOUBT THE LIFE-CHANGING INSPIRATIONAL SONG OF 2015, TOPPING ITUNES AND RADIO CHARTS, AND SELLING MORE THAN 2 MILLION DOWNLOADS IN THE U.S. ALONE. THE FIRE THAT “FIGHT SONG” IGNITED HAS CONNECTED NOT ONLY WITH MUSIC FANS BUT ALSO COLUMBIA RECORDS. RACHEL’S MAJOR LABEL DEBUT, “WILDFIRE,” WAS RELEASED JANUARY 1ST, 2016. THE SINGER IS TOURING THE WORLD, PERFORMING ON COUNTLESS TELEVISION SHOWS AND BEING PLAYED ON RADIO STATIONS COAST TO COAST. BUT ASK RACHEL WHAT SHE WANTS PEOPLE TO TAKE AWAY FROM HER MUSIC AND SHE SAYS, “I’M IN LOVE WITH THE IDEA OF CONNECTING PEOPLE. BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER IS TO ME, THE MOST IMPORTANT THING WE CAN DO IN THIS LIFE. I FEEL LIKE THAT’S MY MISSION WITH MY MUSIC. I THINK THAT’S WHY I’M GETTING THIS CHANCE RIGHT NOW.”

Men’s Health Month and Fathers’ Day is a great time to become better informed about men’s health matters, while celebrating the importance of men in the family. Medical errors are now the 3rd leading cause of death in the US. Being more proactive to protect the men in your life from diagnostic medical errors can change their lives forever. Men and their loved ones can guard against some medical errors, including in the treatment of cancers and cardio-vascular disease, by becoming better informed right now. Being informed is critical as is seeing doctors for regular checkups. Men are 80% less likely than women to see a doctor regularly. Regular checkups can catch diseases in their early and asymptomatic forms before they worsen and cause life altering complications, or even death. If it’s a year since your last check-up, consider making an appointment with your primary care physician. Make sure visits include a check of your weight, blood pressure and heart rate, and write down your numbers in your own journal. Ask your doctor about health screenings that may be appropriate for you, discussing your age, family medical history, and personal medical history. You will also benefit from having a cholesterol test, blood glucose test, and a prostate exam regularly. Record your results in your journal for comparison later. Ask if you need updated vaccinations, or new ones for the flu, pneumonia, and shingles. Cardiovascular disease is still the leading cause of death in the U.S. for men. One type of vascular disease is aortic disease. Conditions that can lead to aortic disease include high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, connective tissue disorders, and genetic conditions. The aorta is the body’s largest artery and if affected by vascular disease, can dilate, develop an aneurysm, or tear. Aortic disease can increase the risk of serious future vascular problems. When narrowed blood vessels cause a reduction of blood flow to the limbs, it is known as peripheral artery disease. If you have PAD, it often means the legs don’t receive enough blood. This can cause leg pain while walking, cramping, and slow healing sores. Unfortunately, PAD can indicate widespread atherosclerosis, which increases the risk of stroke and heart attack.
Cancer is the second leading cause of death and one type of cancer that is overlooked is testicular cancer. Fortunately, testicular cancer is one the most treatable and curable kinds, if it is caught early. Medical negligence can delay a diagnosis, resulting in costlier treatment and poorer outcomes. Here are some important facts you should know: • Testicular cancer affects younger men more often. • Men whose family members have had testicular cancer are also more at risk. • Abnormal testicular development or undescended testicles have been linked to cancer. Symptoms can include dull pain in the back, groin, or abdomen, or the scrotum feeling “heavy.” • See your doctor ASAP if symptoms persist longer than two weeks so they can order an ultrasound and blood test. • Testicular cancer can be treated with chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery. Decide with your doctor which treatment is best for your situation. Be sure the doctor informs you of all of your options, potential risks and side effects of each treatment, and consider a second opinion. Screenings to help identify chronic and dangerous diseases like cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease are great partners to eating well and exercising regularly. Exercise can reduce stress, which is a factor in many illnesses including depression, gastrointestinal illness, and even Alzheimer’s. Find new habits to work into your daily routine, because small changes can eventually become ingrained habits. Take responsibility for being proactive about your health, for yourself and the loved ones in your life. by
