Hundreds Attend Long Island’s 21st Annual LGBT Conference More than 300 attended The LGBT Network’s 21th Annual Long Island LGBT Conference on Tuesday, March 28th at the Stony Brook University Charles B. Wang Center. The annual Long Island LGBT Conference is Long Island’s only LGBT-specific conference that seeks to educate and empower students, educators, health and human service providers, and other members of the community to address the needs of LGBT people throughout the lifespan in their schools and communities. The Long Island LGBT Conference offered attendees a broad range of workshops with topics of interest to students, educators, activists, professionals, and community members. Over 25 workshops were offered at the conference which was both interactive and innovative. Addressing bullying was a central theme and the LGBT Network’s Aaron Braun and Lyndsay Smith led interactive sessions of the "Upstander training: Don’t stand by, Stand up!” This workshop trained and empowered hundreds of youth on techniques of intervening when they witness bullying. Through role-play, participants were able to understand bystander behavior and have the opportunity to practice effective yet appropriate responses to addressing bullying. Health promotion and prevention were also big topic areas as the LGBT Network’s Stephanie Buxbaum and Christopher Polistena, led sessions for participants to “Know your (sexual) rights!" New York State laws on HIV/STD testing, age of consent, access to condoms and other issues were discussed. A Name Change Clinic was led by a transgender legal advocacy organization to assist those that wanted to change their names to correspond with their gender identity. Since 1996, The Long Island LGBT Conference has provided an opportunity for thousands of middle, high school and college students, educators, higher education professionals, health and human service providers and community members each year to discuss the unique needs of the community, learn how to become better advocates and create positive change.

Pitching in to Strike Out Bullying The LGBT Network and the New York Mets are celebrating the 2nd Annual “Pride Night at Citi Field”, on Saturday, June 17th (4:10pm game) that creates an exciting, memorable experience for thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community members and allies.

Starting at 1:30pm the LGBT Network will host a pre-game, rally and mini pride festival in Mets Plaza, outside the Jackie Robinson Rotunda Main Gate. Various entertainers will perform and will be able to meet and greet fellow community members and Mets fans. Tickets are now available for this year’s game vs. the Mets main division rivals, the Washington Nationals. The first 800 ticket purchasers will get a free tee-shirt and will be invited on the field to join in the pregame festivities during the National Anthem!

Last year, The Mets made Citi Field a true home for the LGBT Community. From Rainbow Flags flying over the stadium, to openly gay former Major League player Billy Bean throwing out the first pitch, to honoring an LGBT Veteran between innings during the game with a US Flag presentation by Mets Pitcher and Long Island native, Steven Matz. For the first time ever, the “Kiss Cam” featured same-sex couples to tunderous applause. Bean says the Mets are sending “a great message not only to their fans, but for all of baseball.”

The LGBT Network Stands Up for Equality In February, the Trump Administration began its attack on the LGBT community by rescinding an Obama administration policy that any school that receives federal money must treat a student’s gender identity as his or her sex. This meant that transgender students were protected under Title IX, the statute that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex. Trump has put these protections in jeopardy, leaving transgender students open to discriminatory and dangerous interpretations of Title IX.

Within hours of the announcement, the LGBT Network mobilized a response, holding a press conference denouncing the move as deplorable and dangerous. The LGBT Network featured the voices and faces of our community who were heard and seen around the globe, as the story was released in major news outlets in over 50 nations and translated into numerous languages. Oklahoma tribe approves gay marriage as Native American groups debate issue

Americans oppose bathroom laws limiting transgender rights The majority of respondents to a new U.S. poll opposed laws barring transgender people from using bathrooms consistent with their gender identities and indicated growing acceptance for gay rights, a nonpartisan research group said on Friday. Fifty-three percent of the Americans surveyed oppose laws requiring transgender people to use bathrooms that correspond to their sex at birth, according to the national poll by the Public Religion Research Institute. The survey showed that 39 percent of respondents favored such laws, and almost one in 10 of the 2,031 adults surveyed in February by telephone had no opinion. The issue of transgender bathroom rights has become the latest flashpoint in the long U.S. battle over lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights. The U.S. Supreme Court this week sidestepped a major ruling on whether transgender students are entitled to bathroom choice under federal anti-discrimination law. That decision followed Republican President Donald Trump's swift move to rescind a 2016 directive by former Democratic President Barack Obama's administration to open up bathroom access in U.S. public schools.

Teen advocate Jazz Jennings inspires first transgender doll CNN WIRE - NEW YORK Like any other girl, 16-year-old Jazz Jennings always loved dolls and dresses. But unlike many others, Jazz, who is transgender, couldn’t find one that truly represented her. That’s all about to change. As one of the youngest transgender people to be extensively documented on social media, Jazz has garnered a large following that includes nearly half a million Instagram followers, and the latest installment of this appreciative fandom is a doll version of the teen. The Tonner Doll Company, which specializes in adult collectibles and high fashion dolls, is releasing a Jazz Jennings doll that was designed and sculpted by the founder of the company, Robert Tonner. 10

The doll will come with a pink shirt and jean shorts, mirroring the outfit that Jazz wears on the cover of her memoir, Being Jazz: My Life as a (Transgender) Teen. It debuted at the New York Toy Fair. “Jazz stands for everything I respect from a human nature point of view,” Tonner said in a statement. “She’s incredibly brave, intelligent, warm-hearted and creative.” The company is marketing the doll to children, instead of as an adult collectible. It has also created a red-carpet ready Jazz doll, wearing a sparkling white ballerina dress. The dolls will be available for purchase in July. “I hope that it can place transgender people in a positive light by showing that we are just like all other people,” Jazz said

Reuters - PAWHUSKA, OKLA. A Native American tribe in Oklahoma has voted to allow same-sex marriage, joining a small group of prominent tribes changing their law in light of the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark 2015 decision making the practice legal in all states. The same-sex case known as Obergefell v Hodges has rippled through the 567 federally recognized Indian Nations. As sovereign entities, they are not necessarily bound by the Supreme Court decision, leaving many in the precarious position of trying to decide whether to make the hot-button issue part of their traditional law. "Tribes don’t have to follow Obergefell. Tribes should, unless they have a good reason not to," said Robert Clinton, a professor specializing in tribal law at Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law. Unofficial results of the special election in the Osage Nation in northern Oklahoma showed 52 percent approved a referendum amending the definition of marriage in the tribe’s legal code to include same-sex couples, officials said. The vote allows the tribe's judicial branch to issue marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples. The Osage Nation has more than 20,000 citizens and is one of Oklahoma's larger tribes.

US sends "pro-family" group to UN fueling fears over LGBT rights REUTERS NEW YORK, March 15 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - The United States has sent a pro-family lobbying group listed as a "hate group" by civil rights activists in its delegation to key United Nations meetings, advocates said on Wednesday, fuelling fears over rolling back gay rights. The Center for Family and Human Rights (C-FAM) was named this week by the U.S. State Department to attend the U.N.'s Commission on the Status of Women, an annual set of high-level meetings on women's equality and empowerment. C-FAM has been listed as an anti-LGBT hate group by nonprofit civil rights group the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) for at least five years, said Heidi Beirich, director of the SPLC's Intelligence Project. "The way you get on our anti-gay hate list is basically if you demonize the gay population," Beirich told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. "That's how they ended up on the list." The move comes as decisions by President Donald Trump's new administration raise fears of a rollback of LGBT rights. Trump has voiced support for LGBT rights, but his administration has revoked federal guidelines that let transgender students use bathrooms of their choice. Vice President Mike Pence has expressed staunch opposition to gay rights.. On its website, C-FAM says its mission is "to defend life and family at international institutions". Beirich said the inclusion of C-FAM "is taking the State Department in a very ugly direction" and failing to address the violence and discrimination faced by LGBT people in some places. "When you take this anti-gay tone openly, that provides an opening for people to continue those horrible practices," she said. "We want the State Department to be a beacon of freedom and safety for communities, and this is the opposite of that."

Disney to feature first gay scene in Beauty and the Beast LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Disney will feature its first gay scene when a character is seen struggling with his sexuality in the liveaction remake of 'Beauty and the Beast', according to the film's director. The film's stars will be heterosexual - British actors Emma Watson and Dan Stevens play the title roles - and manservant LeFou, sidekick to the film's macho main man Gaston, will grapple with his own sexuality. "LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston," director Bill Condon told gay magazine Attitude. "He's confused about what he wants. It's somebody who's just realizing that he has these feelings. It is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie," he told the British magazine. Attitude editor-in-chief Matt Cain said it was an important step towards fair representation of LGBT people in the media. "By representing same-sex attraction in this short but explicitly gay scene, the studio is sending out a message that this is normal and natural â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and this is a message that will be heard in every country of the world, even countries where it's still socially unacceptable or even illegal to be gay," he said. 'Beauty and the Beast' tells the story of a prince who is transformed into a beast, and a young woman who is imprisoned in his castle, as he tries to win her love.

Transgender students decry 'dangerous' Trump decision AFP - Activists, parents and transgender students vowed to resist the Trump administration's "dangerous" reversal of federal protections of bathroom rights, warning it risked exposing young people to hate-fueled violence. The White House decision to allow states and school districts to decide whether students can access bathrooms of their choice violates civil rights that should be enshrined at the national level, they said. Fewer than half of all states currently ban public accommodation discrimination based on gender identity while four Republican states actively restrict bathroom access or restrict laws that would allow it. "Things I never imagined happening are just blowing my mind," said Lauren Bocketti, mother of 10-year-old Zach, whose needs she says were always treated fairly at school on Long Island, New York. "We've been lucky and want everybody to feel lucky," she told a news conference of Long Island parents and transgender students who joined an avalanche of human rights groups already criticizing the move. "It's not a choice. It's who he is. He knew by two years old who he is. He is a boy. He's a boy trapped in a girl's body," she said. Madeline Bruni, 18, who began

transitioning in middle school, said even in a state as liberal as New York, which now enshrines bathroom rights, life was not easy. A year and a half ago, a restaurant called the police when she used the women's restroom. - 'Boggles my mind' "In this day and age, it just boggles my mind that is something that still goes on," she told reporters. Ethan Diaz, 16, said that while he had never had a problem, the decision made him angry on behalf of others who had experienced fear and anxiety about using the bathroom. "New York is a great place to transition, people do feel comfortable," he said. "But for people not in New York, that's the fear." Toxic schools contribute to higher rates of depression, suicide, homelessness and HIV infection for transgender young people, activists say. New York LGBT Network CEO David Kilmnick warned that the decision will increase the stigma attached to transgender youths and put them at "greater risk for hate-motivated violence." "What this policy does is increase the likelihood of that violence taking place," he told the news conference. "Refusing to

protect our most vulnerable youth is both deplorable and dangerous." Three quarters of transgender students report feeling unsafe at school, more than 40 percent have been physically abused at school and over half report skipping school to avoid bullying, Kilmnick said. He dismissed arguments put forward by conservatives that the protections put in place by former president Barack Obama's administration had put other children at risk. - 'High risk' of assault "We know that the transgender community is not at risk for committing sexual assault, the transgender community is at high risk of being a victim of sexual assault," Kilmnick said. His network, which he founded 24 years ago, set up a 24-hour hotline on Thursday and is now assembling a team of lawyers to take action against institutions or the federal government if warranted. The issue will be a rallying cry at a national LGBT march on Washington scheduled for June 11 and Kilmnick said there is an increased urgency for all marginalized groups to unite in protest. On Thursday, several hundred protesters filled the block outside the historic Stonewall Inn, a landmark of the gay rights movement in New York's Greenwich Village, in support of transgender students. The crowd held signs proclaiming "Resist," "Protect Trans Youth" and "Trans Rights Are Human Rights," chanting, "Stand up, fight back!" Bathroom rights are a hot-button social issue at the center of a broader cultural battle between conservatives and liberals. When North Carolina passed a law requiring transgender people to use restrooms corresponding to the gender on their birth certificates, a string of companies and sports teams boycotted the state. The US Supreme Court is set next month to consider the case of a 17-year-old in Virginia who was born a female but identifies as a male and filed suit to be able to use the boys' bathroom at his high school. Thai contestant crowned Miss International Queen in transgender pageant REUTERS - Thai contestant Jiratchaya Sirimongkolnawin was crowned Miss International Queen 2016 at a contest billed as the world's largest and most popular transgender pageant. The 25-year-old beat 24 other contestants for the crown, with the second and third place going to contestants from Brazil and Venezuela, respectively. The pageant, which brings together transgender people from around the world, was launched over a decade ago to help transgender women feel more accepted by society. "It's like a new category, but the gender already existed a long time ago," said Jiratchaya, donning a white glittering and black side rim evening gown. The contest, in its 12th year, was held at the Tiffany's nightclub in the Thai seaside town of Pattaya, which is famous for its transvestite cabaret. Like other beauty pageants, contestants paraded in national costumes, evening gowns and swimsuits. For many, the contest represents a springboard for future opportunities. Thailand remains a largely conservative society, with no laws recognizing same-sex unions though it has a prominent lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. The 2016 show was postponed from November last year due to Thailand's mourning period of its late King Bhumibol Adulyadej who died at age 88 on Oct. 13.

Germany's Social Democrats, Greens press for same-sex marriage REUTERS - Germany's Social Democrats (SPD), junior partners in Chancellor Angela Merkel's ruling coalition, said on they would launch a new push to legalize same-sex marriage in Germany, a move opposed in the past by Merkel's Christian Democrats. Thomas Oppermann, who heads the SPD's parliamentary faction, told Der Spiegel magazine his party would raise the issue at the next meeting of the right-centre coalition, a move welcomed by the pro-environment Green party. The issue could help the SPD differentiate itself from Merkel's conservatives as the uneasy coalition partners ramp up campaigning ahead of Sept. 24 national elections. Merkel's Christian Democratic Union and its CSU Bavarian sister party edged ahead of the SPD in the latest poll conducted by Emnid for the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag. The SPD, which saw a surge in the polls after it nominated former European Parliament President Martin Schulz as its chancellor candidate, is hoping to win enough votes to form a new government with smaller allies such as the Green party. Oppermann told the magazine that the party would also press for rehabilitation and compensation of people charged under a law that criminalized homosexuality which was in effect in postwar West Germany until 1969. "For years, we've seen nothing but hot air from the conservatives and the SPD," she said in a statement. German Family Minister Manuela Schwesig, a Social Democrat, said legalizing same-sex marriage would mark important societal progress. "It's time for the conservatives to move on this issue. It must stop putting the brakes on modernization," she said in a statement, citing widespread support for such a move. The coalition government in 2015 agreed to small changes in same-sex civil partnership rules, but staunch opposition from the conservatives prevented approval of gay marriage. A study by Germany's Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency in January found that 83 percent of Germans supported legal equality for samesex marriage. YouTube admits that LGBT videos are hidden in its "restricted mode", apologies for confusion INDEPENDENT TECH The Google-owned video company offers a "restricted mode" that aims to "screen out potentially objectionable content". But a number of prominent YouTubers noticed that LGBTQ videos appeared to be hidden as part of that rule – provoking huge protests. Now YouTube has admitted that such videos are being hidden, but says that it only does so to ensure that people don't see videos that deal with "more sensitive issues". "We are so proud to represent LGBTQ+ voices on our platform – they're a key part of what YouTube is all about," a Twitter post on the YouTube Creators account read. "The intention of Restricted Mode is to filter out mature content for the tiny subset of users who want a more limited experience. "LGBTQ+ videos are available in Restricted Mode, but videos that discuss more sensitive issues may not be. We regret any confusion this has caused and are looking into your concerns." A YouTube spokesperson later clarified that those more sensitive issues are particularly videos that cover subjects like "health, politics and sexuality". Many of the videos being hidden don't appear to deal with anything explicit or adult. Videos including those looking at LGBT models or make-up tutorials posted by trans users were hidden, according to their creators. YouTuber Rowan Ellis was among the first to point out that videos covering things like relationships or crushes were being filtered out of restricted mode, apparently without their creators' knowledge, in a video titled 'YouTube Is Anti-LGBT?'. YouTube advertises restricted mode as a way for children and families to avoid seeing "potentially objectionable content". It flags such videos using "community flagging, age-restrictions, and other signals to identify and filter out potentially inappropriate content", it writes on the page advertising it.

Apart from recalling his experience with both, the answer is simply because he can. Because the former baby-faced JoBro is all man now, from his 5 o’clock shadow to his steel physique, which he’s not been shy about showing off. While making the promotional rounds for his debut as lead singer of Los Angelesformed collective DNCE, the newly liberated 27-year-old hasn’t merely shifted away from the much-publicized “purity ring” of his youth, taking on a kinky array of topics including porn, boners and penis size – he’s erased its very existence. Like younger brother Nick, middle sibling Joe wasn’t done destroying any traces of his Disney halo when he freewheeled through our recent talk. The biggest difference is the writing. But cut to when you’re 27, and you’re going through things that are a bit more mature, sexually or what not, and that’s what you’re gonna write about. A song from your new album, “Be Mean,” is essentially about S&M. Tell me about your decision to be so sexually liberated in your music. Some people say, “We finally can talk about these kinds of things, and we want to go wild and crazy,” but really, it’s just stuff we’re going through. I feel like I’m

free in my life to speak about it, and yeah, everyone should try a little bit of something new in the bedroom. It’s definitely fun when you bring some whips and leather and whatever you may be into – a little bit of S&M – into the bedroom. I wrote it about me and someone I was getting wild with, and maybe (we) busted some outfits out – you know, you get a little crazy. It’s a fun song, and I hope people can have fun with it and learn from it. What do you want them to learn? (Laughs) Well... I would love for them to learn that it’s good to try new things. Maybe you should teach them, Joe. I’ll do a handbook. Have your brother, Nick, write the foreword. Exactly. I expect you to be one of the reviewers. Were there moments before when people were trying to guide you to be something different than who you felt you were? I would say “yeah” to that. Yes, because

it may have been subconscious; it could just be friends you’ve surrounded yourself with, or on a deeper level it could be music people around you saying, “This is the right direction for you, and this is where you should go next.” I remember when I did a short run of a solo project (2011’s Fastlife, released on Disney Music Group’s Hollywood Records), all signs were pointing to a very R&B, smooth, sexy vibe for an album, and I listened without taking time for myself to really utilize influences that I love. I learned from it, but at the same time, it was jarring. But I feel really comfortable in my life and career right now. I definitely feel like the best version of myself, and I’m glad I can have a good label now that allows me to spread my wings and create music that really is, for all of us (in the band), unique and special. Another change: Your body. What inspired the muscles? I wanted a change of pace and to put myself through a challenge. It’s easy to eat junk food and party every night on tour, so I put myself through a season where I challenged myself physically, and I really enjoyed it. There were days that were tough, but seeing your body slowly changing, you just want to keep on it. I had a trainer on tour with me – this amazing boxer Ava Knight – and she came out and busted my ass, and I was really enjoying it. Has your beefier body gotten you more attention from gay men? I think so! Probably, yeah. I’m seeing it just through DMs. It’s quite funny. But I take it as a compliment. It’s cool. At the end of the day, for me, it goes back to the music, and DNCE has done a lot of cool concerts, like Pride shows. We have a lot of gay fans, and we love that they’re so supportive, so hey, if that makes them happy, it’s all good. What do gay men DM you? I bet you could take a wild guess. (Laughs) It’s all over the map, from selfies to youknow-what. It’s funny, too, because you can’t really tell what people are sending because everything now is blurred out, and I like to read some of the DMs and hear stories. But, of course, sometimes there are crazy ones, and it’s just straight nudity. You have to just find something good in it – or laugh, depending on what it is. I have to say, few things are making me feel optimistic about the current state of America, but your album is one of them.

Oh, man. Thanks! You know, honestly, that’s what we’re all about: taking people out of a place they don’t wanna be in and bringing some joy to a situation. Why is it important for you and the band to perform at Pride events or, like you did recently, at a club like G-A-Y in London? In the world we live in now more than ever, it’s especially important that, like you said, our music can take you out of that. I think, what is a better time than now for everyone coming together and being stronger together, whatever your thoughts are on the election? It can be a heartache for some. I think for DNCE we try to bring some joy to you and happiness and share the love, and that’s what it’s all about for us. If we can put a smile on your face, that’s what’s important to us. And look, our gay fans are awesome and we want to give back in every way we can, so we’re putting on shows for them. How have you been processing the election outcome? I’ve been able to see a lot of different viewpoints. What I mean is, I just presented at the Glamour Women of the Year event, and it was a pretty somber crowd, obviously. Toward the end, there was a bit of hope. Bono actually won Man of the Year, and he said it best when he was like, I shouldn’t even be up here, but now more than ever, men and women should be uniting and coming together. It was interesting to see how they’re handling it, but for me, personally, I was bummed. Now, it’s time to come together, and there’s going to be some positive things hopefully. It may suck, but I love this country and I think that’s what it’s about. There are several videos online of paparazzi chasing you down and asking if you’re gay. Why do people think you’re gay?

I don’t know the real answer to it. I don’t have an issue with it. I think it’s a compliment. I have a lot of gay fans. It’s not like it bothers me. Some people handle it differently, but at the end of the day, I’m cool with it and think it’s kind of funny. You have to learn to laugh; people are gonna create a story out of anything. You know, it’s probably because I’m in touch with my feminine side. Look, I love fashion; I love to dress well. I love certain things like that. And I have a lot of gay friends, as well, so that could probably point them in that direction. But again, the gay community is something that is close to my heart, so I don’t mind. Hey, if they wanna think I’m gay, it’s fun. Reinforcing those rumors: the fact that you want to collaborate with Barbra Streisand. Yeaaah! I love Barbra Streisand. It’s so funny: Our stylist is like the biggest Barbra Streisand fan in the world, and it’s amazing because I always make sure we play the song “Barbra Streisand” when we walk in the room before a fitting. Do you have a favorite Barbra album? That’s tough to say. Look, I love theater as well. I had the opportunity to be on Broadway when I was younger, and I hope to be able to do it again one day. So, I would say the theatrical side of Barbra, I really love. You’ve also dabbled in acting. If you ever followed in your brother Nick’s footsteps and played gay, who’s on your shortlist of male romantic interests? That’s a great question. I’d say for sure Daniel Craig. I think Matthew McConaughey is a hunk of a man. I’d have to go with George Clooney. Older, mature men. What message do you hope to send to people who are reluctant to support LGBT issues? Look, we’re all human. Some of the best friends in my life are gay, and we don’t look at each other any differently, and it’s not like there’s any separation of who we are as people. Love is love. And if you have a problem with that, then you can just get out of this world – first trip to the moon, first trip to space – because I honestly feel like life’s too short to worry about dumb things like that. People are people, and I’m gonna help out in any way I can. And what better time than now?

WOMEN Would we have Mitski without queer artist St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark)? Possibly, but it’s hard to ignore St. Vincent’s influence. Nevertheless, Mitski is boldly and brilliantly her own artist on Puberty 2 (Dead Oceans); beginning with the stuttering beat and fluttering vocal of the bizarre “Happy,” a song that morphs from experimental to pure pop and back again. Her loud/quiet/loud approach on “Best American Girl” suits the drama of the subject matter. Listeners would be wise to prepare themselves for the shift from the string-busting, shrieking punk of “My Body’s Made of Crushed Little Stars” to the exquisite ballad “Thursday Girl.” Like puberty, there is never a dull moment on this album and Mitski makes nothing less than an indelible impression with songs such as “Crack Baby,” “Dan the Dancer” and “Fireworks”.

Mitski performs on April 29 in Brooklyn at Brooklyn Steel and on July 29 in NYC at Panorama. Jesca Hoop released her debut album in 2007. Ten years later, she’s finally getting the recognition that she deserves with Memories Are Now (Sub Pop), her latest album. Memories Are Now arrives on the coattails of 2016’s Love Letter for Fire, a well-received collaboration with Sam Beam of Iron & Wine. Hoop, who has never really fit neatly into a musical category, continues to be unconventional in the best possible way. The opening title cut is one of the more accessible tunes, but it’s no cookie-cutter Katy Perry song. It’s a bare-bones affair augmented by layered choral vocals. The aptly named “Animal Kingdom Chaotic” is sure to appeal LGBT fans of Little Britain with its “computer says no” echo. Other standouts include “Unsaid,” “Pegasi” and “Simon Says.”

Endorsed by Hillary Clinton’s former running mate Tim Kaine, Lucy Dacus makes her debut with No Burden (Matador). You have to admit that that’s quite a distinction and after one listen to the album it’s easy to understand the appeal. Dacus’ honey and smoke voice conveys every inch of an emotion, which is a good thing since her songs, beginning with opener “I Don’t Wanna Be Funny Anymore,” pack an emotional wallop. “Troublemaker Doppelganger,” for example, alternates between the blues and a modern rock gallop, while “Strange Torpedo” is subtly explosive.

Medicine For Birds (Warner Brothers), the debut album by young singer/ songwriter Angelica Garcia is just the thing for what ails you. Garcia is a natural folkie (“Bridge On Fire”), frontporch stomper (“Woman, I’m Hollerin’”), modern blues blaster (“Orange Flower”), balladeer (“Loretta Lynn”) and twangy torch singer (“Call Me Later”). The dozen songs on Medicine For Birds are a fine introduction to an artist with much to offer listeners. 42

Sallie Ford performs on April 12 in Brooklyn at The Bell House The rocky coast photo on the cover of Sallie Ford’s Soul Sick (Vanguard) is an indication that these songs are a different kind of beach music. The vintage vibe of “Screw Up,” “Loneliness Is Power,” “Failure,” “Middle Child” and “Hurts So Bad,” might have you thinking about doing The Swim or The Jerk in a polka-dot bikini atop a crowded beach blanket. However, you’d be wise to pay attention to the lyrics which are about more than hot rods and finding the perfect wave. Don’t neglect to dig that Farfisa on “Get Out” and the horn section on “Rapid Eyes.”

If the name Beth Hart sounds familiar, it’s because 20 or so years ago she had a hit single titled “L.A. Song (Out of this Town),” from her second album Screamin’ For My Supper. In the years that followed, Hart followed her blues passion, releasing a number of albums closely associated with the genre. Fire on the Floor (Provogue), her latest, breaks up the blues with pleasing pop-soul (“Let’s Get Together”), jazz balladry (“Woman You’ve Been Dreaming Of”), piano-driven power-pop (“Picture in a Frame”) and stunning piano/vocal closer “No Place Like Home”.

Taking its title, Freedom Highway (Nonesuch), from the “Pops” Staples song that closes the disc, Rhiannon Giddens’ stellar second solo album, like Ford’s, mines a vintage vein. Also like Ford, Giddens writes and performs in a style that honors the past. Never one to shy away from important subject matter, Giddens opens the recording with “At The Purchaser’s Option.” There is much to admire here, especially in the way that she’s able to strike a balance between styles of folk and soul music that call on the past (“We Could Fly,” “Hey Bébé,” “The Love We Almost Had”) and the present (“Birmingham Sunday” and “Better Get It Right The First Time”), sometimes within the same song.

THE EDGE OF MANCHESTER BY MOONLIGHT Not to be confused with the classic 1998 gay movie Edge of Seventeen, The Edge of Seventeen (STX/Universal), now available in a double-disc Bluray+DVD+Digital HD version, is the directorial debut by writer/filmmaker Kelly Fremon Craig. t is a good example of a movie that, upon its initial 2016 theatrical was well-received by critics, so much so that one might be led to believe that it’s better than it is. Mostly it’s sloppy and meandering, beginning with the narration near the opening of the film that is abandoned shortly thereafter. As a second grader, Nadine (Hailee Sternfeld) realized there were two kinds of people; those who radiate confidence and naturally excel at life and the people who hope all those people die in a big explosion. Nadine’s older brother Darien (Blake Jenner) fits into the first group while the socially inept Nadine belongs to the second. As if that wasn’t bad enough, Nadine and her mother Mona (Kyra Sedgwick) are always at odds. Mona’s on team Darien. Nadine’s father Tom (Eric Keenleyside) is on her team, that is until he dies. Additionally, Nadine is bullied at school. She’s friendless until she meets Krista (Haley Lu Richardson), and the two outcasts help get the other through the next few years. Adolescence isn’t much better, as Darien kept getting better looking, while Nadine goes through a series of awkward stages. At 17, and as high school juniors, Nadine and Krista are still friends. Nadine has an antagonistic relationship with her favorite teacher Mr. Bruner (Woody Harrelson). She flirts with classmate Erwin (Hayden Szeto) and crushes out on fellow student Nick (Alexander

Calvert). Nadine’s home life is messy, too, with her widowed mother attempting to meet men online. However, it’s when Darien starts dating Krista that Nadine’s world really begins to collapse. Craig has said that she found inspiration in the films of John Hughes, but there is such a lack of humor or insight here that it’s hard to see the connection. Not even the chance to gaze at Blake Jenner’s chiseled features makes it worth watching The Edge of Seventeen. In other words, don’t believe the hype. Bluray+DVD+Digital HD bonus features include deleted scenes and a gag reel. Writer/director (and occasional actor) Kenneth Lonergan has an ear for dialogue and the proven ability to transfer the way in which people speak and interact with each other from the page to the screen. It was vividly on display in his 2000 film You Can Count On Me, for which he received an Oscar nomination. Everything you’ve heard about Lonergan’s latest, the Oscarwinning Manchester By The Sea (Lionsgate/Amazon Studios), which earned Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay trophies, is true. Devastating, raw and real, the film features searing performances by Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams and Lucas Hedges. Manchester By The Sea weaves back and forth from the present to the past, in long and short sequences. In the present, Lee (Affleck giving the performance of his career) works as a handyman/ janitor at an apartment building near Boston in Quincy. He shovels snow in the winter, fixes leaky sinks and so on. He leads an almost monk-like existence in his basement apartment, although he has a tendency to drink too much at the neighborhood tap and get into fights. The death of Lee’s older brother Joe (Kyle Chandler) in seaside Manchester, although not unexpected (he had been living with congestive heart failure for some time), still deals a blow to the younger brother. The brothers had been through a lot together, including the end of Joe’s marriage to alcoholic Elise (Gretchen Mol), the mother of Joe’s son Patrick (Hedges). The brothers were also as much comfort to each other as they could possibly be following an unthinkable tragedy that struck

Meanwhile, Chiron’s best friend Kevin (Jaden Piner) takes it upon himself to try to toughen him up. Chiron’s living situation is increasingly unpleasant, so he begins hanging out at Juan and Teresa’s. Juan takes him to the beach and tries to teach him to swim. At home, Chiron discovers his mother doing drugs with a strange man. Things come full circle when Juan catches Paula freebasing in a car with the crack she bought from one of his sales associates. What follows is a devastating confrontation scene where Paula makes fun of Chiron as Juan defends him. Lee, his wife Randi (Williams) and their three young children. It is this horrifying event that both dissolves Lee’s marriage and leads him to move more than an hour south to the Boston area. Now Lee is forced to return to Manchester to not only take care of the arrangements for Joe’s funeral, but to tend to other matters. Among those matters is a meeting with Wes (Josh Hamilton), Joe’s lawyer, who informs Lee that he was named Patrick’s guardian in Joe’s will, something of which he was previously unaware. Patrick, who has lived in Manchester his whole life, has no interest in relocating. Because of this, and the fact that he’s a teenager with raging hormones (and two girlfriends), an active social, musical and sports circle, Patrick is constantly butting heads with Lee. To add insult to injury, Randi (who has since remarried) re-enters Lee’s life. The scenes between Lee and Randi, both pre- and post-tragedy, are the stuff of acting legend, with both performances achieving an aching authenticity.

Shortly after that, there is a scene at Juan and Theresa’s, where Chiron asks Juan “What’s a faggot”? To say that what follows is handled with grace and maturity is an understatement. Set during his high school years, the “Chiron” segment finds Chiron (Ashton Sanders) relentlessly bullied by Terrel (Patrick Decille). At this point, though Juan is dead, Kevin (Jharrell Jerome) is still his best friend. He continues to spend time at Teresa’s as his home situation deteriorates due to Paula’s increased drug use. Essentially homeless and sleeping where he can, Chiron runs into Kevin at the beach. With a delicate touch similar to the earlier “what’s a faggot?” scene, the sex scene that occurs is as erotic as it is sophisticated and artful. But such intimacy doesn’t last long when Kevin is pressured to beat up Chiron by the ever-bullying Terrel. The next day at school, Chiron finally explodes and assaults Terrel, and is arrested.

Manchester By The Sea is heavy duty and unflinching. Don’t watch it without a pocketful of tissues. Nevertheless, Lonergan finds ways to incorporate humorous touches throughout that allows his characters, as well as the audience, to breathe just a little easier. Blu-ray+DVD+Digital HD special features include deleted scenes, a featurette and a conversation with Lonergan. Based on gay playwright Tarell McCraney’s play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue, screenwriter/director Barry Jenkins’ Oscar-winning Moonlight (A24), which took home Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay awards, is nothing less than a breathtaking cinematic achievement. Presented in three separate chapters, Moonlight tells the heartrending story of Chiron – as a child, a teen, and an adult —growing up gay in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood. In the chapter titled “Little”, Chiron (Alex Hibbert) is rescued from school bullies by drug kingpin Juan (Mahershala Ali), and fed and comforted by Juan’s girlfriend Teresa (Janelle Monae). Juan returns the painfully shy young Chiron to his single mother Paula (Naomie Harris) without so much as a thank you from her.

In “Black,” the third and final section, set in Atlanta, the adult Chiron (Trevante Rhodes) is a fierce and muscular force, with a mouthful of gold fronts. He has taken up where Juan left off in terms of running a drug dealing operation. As a nod to Juan, he even has a similar crown-shaped air freshener on his dashboard. Kevin (Andre Holland) tracks Chiron down by phone and apologizes. He tells Chiron he was reminded of him when he heard a song on the jukebox at the diner where he is a cook. He invites Chiron to come down to Florida and see him. The call has an immeasurable effect on him. Following an emotional visit with Paula, who is in rehab, Chiron heads to Kevin’s place of work. From the moment of recognition that occurs between them to their reacquaintance, Moonlight shines brightly as it not only redefines gay cinema, but also black cinema in ways that must be seen to be believed. Suffice to say, that there’s not a false move or performance in the film. DVD special features include deleted scenes and three featurettes. LIVING OUT

Hallelujah!

Rufus Wainwright is still the gay messiah

In the world of queer music, Rufus Wainwright still reigns supreme. Whether he’s turning a cover tune into an instant and enduring classic (as he did handily with Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”), revisiting the work of an icon (his recreation of Judy Garland’s Carnegie Hall concert), following his operatic passion (his opera Prima Donna) or writing and recording his own original pop gems over the course eight studio albums (including 2016’s Take All My Loves: 9 Shakespeare Sonnets), there is no one else like Rufus. I had the pleasure of speaking with Rufus in March 2017 before he embarked on his latest concert tour.

person. What I would say is that I think he would be intrigued by the project, only because within his plays, and within the sonnets, there’s such a variety of atmosphere. Whether it’s comedy or tragedy or hatred or love. There’s such a wide range of emotions. I think that in my album there’s such a wide range of musical styles. He would have at least liked one of the songs; because I think they’re all so different. For him to dismiss the whole thing would be impossible. GS: What was involved in the process of selecting performing collaborators for the project, including Helena Bonham Carter, Florence Welch and William Shatner? RW: It was all very different. Florence Welch was a longtime candidate that we had to hunt down and carve out space with, because she is very occupied. In the end, she was incredibly gracious and it was wonderful working with her. Some of the other people, like Helena Bonham Carter, and Carrie Fisher who is sadly departed, they’re friends of mine and they were either in London or LA when I was making the record. I casually called them up and asked them if they wanted to pop over to the studio. Oftentimes we went over to see them, as well. A lot of the people who recited poems were just around which is definitely a sign of the glamorous life that I lead [laughs].

Gregg Shapiro: Rufus, next year is the 20th anniversary of the release of your eponymous debut album. When you look back at the album now, how do you feel about it? Rufus Wainwright: I’m beaming with pride! What can I say? What I’m finding out now, about a lot of my albums, is that at the time there was some kind of frustration that the material didn’t necessarily make it into the mainstream, per ser. It wasn’t on the radio and it didn’t make me oodles of cash. Now, at this point, it seems like there’s some kind of payback in terms of having really stuck to my guns in that era and made the records that I wanted to make and (being) totally focused on my own sound; people are now coming back to me and thanking me for that. I have a lot of pride about it, actually. GS: I know there’s no way of knowing, but what do you think William Shakespeare would have thought of your Take All My Loves album? RW: [Laughs] there really is no way of knowing. We don’t even know if he’s a he for that matter. There’s so little that’s understood about him as a

GS: Speaking of glamor, we’re talking a few days after the Oscars, and La La Land had a big night, winning six awards. Do you have any interest in writing a movie musical? RW: Oh, yes! I’ve harbored that dream for arguably 35 years, since I was a kid and got into Judy Garland movies and Gene Kelly and stuff like that. GS: Is there one in the works? RW: Certainly now that La La Land did so well and we’re entering a possible wave of movie musicals, there’s definitely been a lot of interest. I’d be a fool not to embark on that kind of project, considering my music and how theatrical it is. GS: The current challenging political environment makes me think of your song “Going To A Town,” which I find to be one of your most political compositions. There are certain songs that I’ve written that relate to the age of Trump. Some of which I’d like to release as soon as possible to get them out there and have people helped by them. But, in terms of writing the opera, what’s going on now is more akin to an operatic tale. It’s so dramatic and frightening and overbearing. It’s definitely hooking into all of my artistic pursuits. It’s scary, but on the other hand inspiring. GS: I recently saw Alan Cumming in concert in Miami and he performed your song “Dinner At Eight”. Do you have favorite cover versions of any of your songs? RW: George Michael did a beautiful cover of “Going To A Town.” I got to write a song for Shirley Bassey which was a lifetime dream. That was great! Shirley Bassey and George Michael, that’s not so bad. GS: Not at all! In addition to the opera, what other current or upcoming projects are you most excited about? RW: They’re doing my first opera, Prima Donna, in Paris in June. That’s a triumph for me. The opera is in French and takes place in Paris, so that will be a real homecoming of sorts. I’m also still working a lot with my sisters, singing with them whenever I can, doing a lot of family music. There’s always something going on. LIVING OUT

I believe free speech not only has its limits, but that it also has a level of responsibility to promote civil discourse for the welfare of others, and reject hate speech which is a precursor to violence. Milo Yiannopoulos, vulgarian, alt-right’s telegenic token gay and Breitbart’s polemical senior editor, last appearance on a national stage may have finally come. And, the bridge too far for even his audience wasn’t Yiannopoulos’s misogyny, xenophobia, racism, antiSemitism, Islamophobia or homophobia, to name a few, but rather his flippant and snarky remarks condoning if not giving a sly and coquettish nod to pedophilia and pederasty in a January 2016 clip of his interview on “Drunken Peasants.” “I’m grateful for Father Michael,” Yiannopoulos told his audience defending his molestation. “I wouldn’t give nearly such good [oral sex] if it wasn’t for him.” In a moment of contrition or perhaps a last-ditch effort to salvage his job, after a tsunami of criticism from even his co-workers at Brietbart, Yiannopoulos went on Facebook and uncharacteristically took responsibility for his faux pas. “I’m partly to blame. My own experiences as a victim led me to believe I could say anything I wanted to on this subject, no matter how outrageous,” Yiannopoulos wrote. “I am certainly guilty of imprecise language, which I regret.” For too long Yiannopoulos felt he was unstoppable when it came to his unfettered free speech as an exercise of his First Amendment right. And why should Yiannopoulos not with a $250,000 book advance for his memoir “Dangerous,” an exploration of the issues of “political correctness” and free speech with Threshold Editions, an imprint of Simon & Schuster as the grand prize for trash talking. Simon & Schuster has now canceled Yiannopoulos’s “Dangerous.” Before Yiannopoulos became alt-right’s perfect poster-boy- gay and Jewish- who denounces dentity politics and “political correctness” a backlash from the Tea Party movement had been afoot for over a decade. But Tea Party and now alt-right folks are not alone expressing how “political correctness” infringes on their life, like the war on Christmas. The controversy first shows its face every early December with the inanity over the new design of Starbucks holiday cups that don’t have a Christmas theme or the greeting “Merry Christmas.” The ongoing feuding back and forth revealed in a July 2016 Pew Research Poll that 59 percent of American’s agree that “too many people are easily offended these days over the language that others use.” Liberal colleges and universities have been in the bull’s- eye of this ongoing debate with conservatives now emboldened with Trump’s presidency to challenge aggressively the politics of “political correctness.” Yiannopoulos’s cancelled visit to Berkeley due to student protests were spun by conservatives as antithetical to free speech and viewed by liberals as hate speech. “An epidemic of speech suppression has taken over college campuses,” Matt Schlapp chairman of the group which sponsors

CPAC told the Hollywood Reporter of Yiannopoulos’ cancelled appearance at Berkeley.“ Milo has exposed their liberal thuggery and we think free speech includes hearing Milo’s important perspective.” Yiannopoulos has been uniquely positioned in transforming his public vitriol and provocation as the symbolic voice and victim of the not “politically correct” oppressed. He has deliberately exploited the tensions between the two camps, employing his brand of hate speech, to stretch the perimeters of how far he can go protected not only under the First Amendment, but also with his audience. As an infamous internet troll, for example, Twitter suspended Yiannopoulos account only after an onslaught of targeted racist and sexist diatribes hurled at Saturday Night Live comedian Leslie Jones was derided by an explosion of celebs coming to Jones’s defense. I believe free speech not only has its limits, but that it also has a level of responsibility to promote civil discourse for the welfare of others, and reject hate speech which is a precursor to violence. While we know, we cannot scream “fire’ in a crowded cinema, because of the potential harm it could create it is equally inappropriate to hurl epithets and threats which Yiannopoulos did unapologetically. And he engages in hate speech aimed at historically disenfranchised groups and individuals with the sole purpose of enflame divisions not only on college campuses but also across the country. When hate speech becomes an accepted norm we have a problem. Hate speech is not a passive form of public speech. And one of the signs of an intolerant society is its hate speech, whether used jokingly or intentionally, aimed at specific groups of people. Also, when this form of verbal abuse becomes part and parcel of the everyday parlance and exchange between people, we have created a society characterized by its zero-tolerance of inclusion and diversity, and where name-calling becomes an accepted norm. Language is a representation of culture, and it perpetuates ideas and assumptions about race, gender, religion, and sexual orientation that we consciously, and unconsciously, articulate in our everyday conversations about ourselves and the rest of the world, and consequently transmit generationally. The liberation of a people is also rooted in the liberation of abusive language in the form of hate hurled at them. Using epithets, especially jokingly, does not eradicate its historical baggage, and its existing social relations among us. Instead, using them dislodges these epithets from their historical context and makes us insensitive and arrogant to the historical injustices done to specific group of Americans. They allow all Americans to become numb to the use and abuse of the power of hate speech because of the currency these epithets still have. And lastly, hate speech thwarts the daily struggle in which many us engage in trying to ameliorate human relations - something Yiannopoulos was antithetical to. Time for a break. LIVING OUT
