2016 Coming Out Campaign Largest Ever
LIGALY and The LGBT Network's 2016 National Coming Out Day Campaign was the largest ever in its 14 year history! More than 100 schools and over 100,000 students, teachers, parents and community leaders participated and took a stand against bullying and came out for safer schools. "We had a 20% increase in participation in NCOD this year," said LGBT Network CEO David Kilmnick. "But this is more than just numbers," Kilmnick adds. "This is about impact and creating safe spaces for LGBT youth, as well as for youth with LGBT families. This campaign gives the chance for people to visibly self-identify and come out as an ally, and therefore, contribute to creating support while taking a stand against the bullying of LGBT youth."
The 2016 National Coming Out Day Awareness Campaign was made possible by generous contributions to the Back to School campaign, which raised over $30,000 this year in support of safer schools. Check out the LGBT Network Youtube Channel to see this year’s National Coming Out Day video!
Painting For Pride Gives Bay Shore Center a Facelift On Saturday, October 22nd, 2016, more than 50 volunteers came out to transform and give the LGBT Network's Bay Shore LGBT Community Center a bright refresh. "The dedication of our volunteers is truly incredible," said LGBT Network COO Robert Vitelli. "For so many people to roll-up their sleeves on a Saturday and volunteer their time, it really speaks to the importance of these community centers in all of our lives." All of the Center's public spaces received fresh coats of paint in vibrant new colors to enhance this cherished place which has been a home and safe space for the community since it opened its doors in 1995. Oregon Elects First Openly LGBT Governor In US History President-Elect Donald Trump Says Same-Sex Marriage Is ‘Settled’ Law ABC News- Republican President-elect Donald Trump said he’s “fine” with same-sex marriage as the law of the land, calling the issue "settled" by the Supreme Court. The comments – in his first television interview since winning the presidency – sharply contrast with his party’s orthodoxy, his running mate’s longtime position and comments the New York Republican made during the primary. “It’s law,” he said in an interview with CBS’ ‘60 Minutes’ that aired Sunday. “It was settled in the Supreme Court. I mean it’s done.” “These cases have gone to the Supreme Court. They’ve been settled. And I’m – I’m fine with that,” he added. The Republican Party’s official platform, ratified by the party in July, opposes same-sex marriage, condemns the Supreme Court’s rulings and supports proposed “religious freedom” legislation that critics say would allow businesses to deny services to gay people. Trump’s comments also break with the longtime positions of his running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, who signed a religious freedom bill into law in 2015, but walked back on some of its language after facing backlash from across the country.
The Washington Blade- Oregon Gov. Kate Brown made history on election night becoming the first openly LGBT person to win election as governor in the United States. The Associated Press declared Brown the winner of the gubernatorial race against Republican challenger Bud Pierce at 11:44 p.m. Eastern Time after polls closed at 11 p.m. in Oregon, which conducts elections entirely on a vote-by-mail basis. With 71 percent of precincts reporting, Brown was estimated to have won 51 percent of the vote compared to the 44 percent won by Pierce. Brown, who’s bisexual, has been already been serving as governor for more than a year, but until now wasn’t elected to the position. Previously Oregon secretary of state, Brown was next in line to become governor after her predecessor, former Gov. John Kitzhaber, resigned in scandal. In an interview with the Washington Blade last month, Brown said the significance of being the first openly LGBT person elected as governor — and the first bisexual person elected to that level position — is increased visibility for the LGBT community because “you can’t be what you can’t see.” “If I can be a role model for one young person that decides that their life is worth living because there’s someone like them in the world, it’s worth it,” Brown said.
LGBT Characters on TV ‘at record high’ BBC- Shows like Transparent mean there are more LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) characters on US TV than ever before, a report has found. The advocacy group Glaad analysed shows seen or to be shown between June 2016 and May 2017 and counted 278 regular and recurring LGBT characters. The number of transgender characters has risen from seven to 16 this year. But Glaad bemoaned the fact that more than 25 lesbian and bisexual female characters died or were killed off. They include the characters Poussey Washington and Bea Smith, who met violent ends in Orange is the New Black and Wentworth respectively. The report also found a record high percentage of black characters on broadcast television, thanks mostly to shows like Empire, Luke Cage and How to Get Away with Murder. Glaad's Where We Are on TV study based its findings on scripted broadcast, cable and streaming series already being shown or for which casting had been confirmed. Glaad's president Sarah Kate Ellis said it was "heartening to see progress being made" but said numbers were "only part of the story."
Texas To Face ‘Significant’ Economic Impact From Anti-LGBT Legislation GAY STAR NEWS-The 2017 session of the Texas legislature is likely to include numerous proposals for anti-LGBT laws, which the Texas Association of Business warns could have a serious impact on economic activity in the state. The study, which is based on actual or projected losses in four states that have passed laws similar to those being considered in Texas, estimates that the the state will lose $8.5billion if it were to pass a bill similar to North Carolina’s controversial HB 2 which prohibits transgender people from using public bathrooms in fitting with their gender identity. ‘We’ve done our homework, and we feel very confident in the numbers,’ Texas Association of Business President Chris Wallace told the Lone Star Observer. 8

Governor Cuomo to LGBT Community: NY Will Stand Up For You Towleroad- New York Governor Andrew Cuomo took to Facebook the Saturday after election day with a message to LGBT people and other minorities: the state of New York will protect you. Cuomo’s message comes on the heels of Donald Trump’s election as president, a surprise that almost immediately caused many people to fear for their safety. Wrote Cuomo, “…let me be absolutely clear: If anyone feels that they are under attack, I want them to know that the state of New York – the state that has the Statue of Liberty in its harbor – is their refuge. “Whether you are gay or straight, Muslim or Christian, rich or poor, black or white or brown, we respect all people in the state of New York.” He added of the Empire State, “We are a state of immigrants. We are the state that raised the minimum wage to $15. We are the state that passed Paid Family Leave. We are the state that passed marriage equality. We are New York, and we will stand up for you. And on that, I will never compromise. Count on it.”
Orlando to turn Pulse Nightclub into memorial to shooting victims Orlando Sentinel-The city of Orlando has reached a deal to buy the Pulse nightclub for $2.25 million and plans to eventually transform the site of the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history into a memorial. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer told the Orlando Sentinel that the city won't rush to change the club, once a mainstay in the gay community that has become a gathering place for visiting and local mourners alike. "There are lots of people that are making a visit to the site part of their trip, part of their experience of Orlando, so I think 12 to 18 months of leaving it as-is would be appropriate," Dyer said. In the meantime, the city plans to solicit ideas from the community for what form the lasting memorial should take. Dyer said the city hasn't ruled out leaving part of the club intact permanently, such as the roadside sign featuring its now-iconic logo. The city's ultimate goal, he said, will be to "create something to honor the memory of the victims that are deceased [and] those that were injured, and a testament to the resilience of our community." The nightclub has been empty since June 12, when a gunman opened fire during a Latin-themed dance party, killing 49 people and wounding dozens more.

Canadian trans teen welcomed by high school football teammates
By LGBT Network
LGBTQ Nation- Kenny Cooley said he wasn’t nervous about starting 12th grade at Halifax West High School in Canada, but he did worry when he decided to put his name on the try-out list for the school football team. Cooley is a 17-year-old trans man. “I was scared of what other people would think about me on the team and I felt like I wouldn’t fit in,” Cooley told CTV News Channel. “It took me about a good hour of pacing around the school and then I finally had the courage to go up and grab a pencil and I decided to put my name on the list.” Not only did he make the team, Cooley was chosen to be wide receiver, and the Halifax West Warriors played their first game Monday. His dad cheered from the stands, and his mother told CTV she’s happy to see the team treat her son “like one of the guys.” “That’s what he wants to be — included, and he
wants to be one of the other guys. I thank the team for everything they’ve been doing,” she said. “I was super nervous. I had butterflies in my stomach and I had chills, just everything,” Cooley told CTV. Cooley described his teammates as “caring” and “accepting.” He had transferred to West Halifax from a less accepting school two years ago. “It wasn’t very comfortable for me,” he said. “They weren’t really accepting of the LGBT2QA+ community, so I made the switch.” Cooley’s coach said this bright young man is likely to teach his teammates lessons both on and off the field. “It will help kids to maybe understand Kenny’s issues and some of the things that Kenny is facing and it will give them the perspective that they probably wouldn’t have had before,” head coach David Kelly told CTV.
Mexico congressional committee nixes same-sex marriage bill
Taiwan will become the first Asian country to legalize Same-sex marriage
Associated Press- A committee in Mexico’s lower house of congress on Wednesday rejected a proposal by President Enrique Pena Nieto for legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide, an idea that sparked big demonstrations by both supporters and opponents. The measure on enshrining same-sex couples’ right to wed in the constitution was defeated 19-8, with one abstention, in the Commission on Constitutional Matters. Commission chairman Edgar Castillo Martinez said the vote means the matter is “totally and definitively concluded,” according to a summary published online by the Chamber of Deputies. Mexico’s Supreme Court ruled last year that it was unconstitutional for states to bar same-sex marriage. But the decision did not have the effect of overturning or rewriting any laws on the books, meaning individual couples still have to sue in each case for the right to wed. Same-sex marriage has been formally legalized only in some jurisdictions, such as Mexico City, the northern state of Coahuila and Quintana Roo state on the Caribbean coast
Associated PressTaiwanese lawmakers are currently working on three bills in support of marriage equality, one of which is already listed for review and could be passed within months. Same-sex marriage also has the prominent support of President Tsai Ing-wen, Taiwan’s first female head of state. About 80 percent of Taiwanese between ages 20 and 29 support same-sex marriage, said Tseng Yen-jung, spokeswoman for the group Taiwan LGBT Family Rights Advocacy, citing local university studies. Taiwan’s United Daily News found in a survey taken four years ago that 55 percent of the public supported same-sex marriage, with 37 percent opposed. That’s seen as a reflection of Taiwan’s ready acceptance of multi-party democracy and other inclusive attitudes, as well as the fact that Taiwan’s 23 million people largely follow Buddhism and traditional Chinese religions that take no strong positions on sexual orientation or gay marriage. Gay and lesbian relationships began to find wide acceptance in the 1990s, aided by the already well-established feminist movement, said Jens Damm, associate Professor in the Graduate Institute of Taiwan Studies at Chang Jung University in Taiwan. “The elite became in favor of a kind of gender equality,” Damm said.
Ireland: Study reveals 1 in 3 LGBT Young People Will Attempt Suicide A report released earlier this year reveals 1 in 3 LGBTI 14-18 year olds in Ireland have attempted to take their own lives. The report indicates this is due to ‘bullying, rejection and pressures to hide who they really are.’ The statistics also reveal that LGBTI young people are also twice as likely to selfharm, and have four times as much severe stress, anxiety and depression than non-LGBTI youth. The report states: ‘67% of LGBTI young people witnessed bullying of other LGBTI students and over 50% of them personally experienced bullying.’ ‘One in four missed or skipped school to avoid negative treatment due to being LGBTI,’ the report revealed. Moninne Griffith, Executive Director at Ireland’s national organization for LGBTI young people said: ‘Despite the great progress we have made in Ireland with equality legislation and marriage equality, most LGBT students are still facing very tough situations in their schools – rejection, bullying and pressures to hide who they really are. ‘This has devastating impacts on their levels of self-harm and suicide,’ she said.

OUT FRONT
IT’S RAINING MENZEL Though it arrives nearly 20 years after her debut album, the timing couldn’t be more perfect for a self-titled Idina Menzel release. Menzel’s latest is a declaration of self – of her real self, that is. “It’s how you pronounce my name,” the Broadway star says during our recent interview about the eponymous title, idina., not-so-subtly alluding to that infamous name botch at the 2014 Academy Awards. You remember: John Travolta called her “Adele Dazeem” just before she hit the stage to perform her career-changing song “Let It Go” from Disney’s Frozen, during which the Tony winner voices cold-thwarting snow queen Elsa. Frozen fame took Menzel to Elphaba heights, but it was Wicked and Rent that forever made her a gay fave. Imagine, then, what a new Beaches might do for Menzel. The Lifetime remake of the 1988 classic has the 45-yearold portraying Bette Midler’s CC Bloom, a career choice the singer-actress admits has ruffled the feathers of her loyal queer following. Menzel talked about one gay fan’s tweet that led to her almost backing out of the film altogether, how LGBT support solidified her success and why she’s “excited” that Frozen fans are pulling for a lesbian Elsa. What’s a trip to the grocery like now, after Frozen made you a household name? It depends on how many little kids or gay men are there. And they certainly have been complimentary, and yeah, we take some pictures and I’ve put myself on a video for several people’s birthday wishes and bar mitzvahs. But the gay guys aren’t just singing “Let It Go” to you, I’m sure. 12

IDINA MENZEL ON WORKING TOWARD LGBT ICON STATUS, A LESBIAN ELSA AND ANGRY GAYS WHO OPPOSE HER BEACHES REMAKE BY CHRIS AZZOPARDI
Exactly. And you know what, I’m leaving out the ladies too! Because, of course, I was Maureen in Rent, so it’s not all the gay male community. There are a lot of beautiful women that have been very supportive of me. What does your long and loyal history with the LGBT community mean to you? Honestly, you said the word “loyal” – it means everything to me. All the women that I’ve revered in my life have been beloved by the gay community. So, when I was younger it was like, if I’m not in with that club, then I haven’t made it. So, as soon as I felt like I was being included and appreciated and supported (by the LGBT community), it just really meant everything to me. Not to mention, the accolades and all the compliments don’t come easy. There can be harsh critics; it’s not an easy crowd to win over, so it feels good when you feel like you’ve made friends and they are so loyal and so supportive. When were you first aware of your gay following? The first moment was probably when I’d go to the Nederlander Theatre when I was in Rent (in the mid ’90s), and I’d get all these amazing letters from young kids struggling with their sexual orientation and who they were and how they wanted to come out. I’d get a lot of letters about that and how I was helping them be honest with themselves and be brave about coming out, so it started then and that was even… that was stronger than I had even anticipated or ever really had dreamed. Just on a much deeper, much more important level than singing a high note with a lot of bravado and people clapping. And it’s continued to be like that, really, with Wicked and Frozen, with Elsa. There are always these characters who are literally trying to come out of

the closet – they’re hiding something within them that they’re afraid to let people see, and then finally they embrace it and change the world around them. You seem to gravitate toward empowered female characters and tropes. Is there a particular reason why? I have no idea! (Laughs) I swear to god, I don’t know if I find them, or they find me. I went into the studio (for this album) – I was going through a divorce (Menzel and her former Rent costar Taye Diggs officially divorced in late 2014 after 10 years of marriage), and I can’t tell you how many times I’d sit with these amazing writers and want to write some really upsetting, sad, dark song and it would turn out to be some uplifting, empowering song about trying to find my strength as a woman. I’d be like, “Aaack, why did we write that?! I hate that! I’m just so sick of it! I wanna be miserable! And I want people to let me be miserable!” (Laughs) But no, I’m half joking. I just want to make sure that people know that I’m not always feeling that empowered and that confident in what I’m doing. Just like anyone else, I gotta work on all that stuff. Are you saying you’re a real person? (Laughs) I think so! I think I am! There’s a lot of pressure on you and Disney to make Elsa gay. Are you surprised by the #GiveElsaAGirlfriend movement? Am I surprised? (Sighs) Maybe at first I was a little surprised because it’s Disney, but I can say that I’m excited that the conversation is happening. I can’t promise anybody that that’s what’s gonna happen. I’m just a servant at a big company called Disney and I’m happy to have a role and a job. But deep down am I really happy that it’s causing people to talk about it and have these kinds of conversations? Yeah, I am. Do you think the world is ready for a lesbian Disney princess? Umm… I don’t know about that, considering we’re having a hard time even getting Donald Trump out of the way. Sometimes it’s a little discouraging. But you never know. We keep making all these strides. We’ve made a lot of strides in the last couple of years, and then all of a sudden the hate and the vitriol within our country is exposed and you’re like, “What happened? We’re in the ancient times again.” What does it mean to you to know that so many LGBT people interpreted “Let It Go” as a coming out anthem? And did you when you first read the lyrics? Yeah, umm... probably not right at first because I’m an actor first, and so I’m thinking, what is it for this character and this young girl? Having had the Wicked experience, I bring those themes to it as well. But then I quickly saw all of the parallels and the universality of the song and how it could speak to so many people in so many different ways. We must talk about the Patti LaBelle-inspired note you slay during “Queen of Swords,” from your new album. (Laughs) I have to say that sometimes my best moments, artistically speaking, have come from really emulating someone I love and playing around, because then I get out of my own space. I was literally just having fun. We had already recorded the end of that song a million times and I sang a million different runs of ad-libs at the end, and I was trying to make my producer

and engineer laugh. And I didn’t know I could do that one! So then, of course, they put it in. I’ve had other moments in my life where I’m on stage and if I’m having a hard time – if I feel insecure about a beat or how I’m interpreting something – I’ve done something like, how would Glenn Close approach this moment? Then, all of a sudden, I’m like, “Oh, look at this,” and I’m holding for applause and taking an extra two seconds just to own the stage, not feeling like I have to get out of there because I’m undeserving. It’s interesting if you put yourself in their footsteps once in a while how it can open that up for you and you realize, “Oh, I’ve been selling myself short. I can sell this moment.” I’m not saying anybody should copy anybody. I don’t think anybody should mimic anyone, but I’m always an advocate of emulating and soaking in all of the greats, because then once it comes out of you, it’ll never be a clone – it will be you inspired by these people. You’ve had three other studio albums – why self-title this one, and what’s the significance of the period? It’s very personal. I went through the hardest time in my life while writing this album – a beautiful, successful time, and also a very tumultuous, complicated time in my personal life, and so it’s very intimate. It’s my way of saying, “Hey, this is me and my barebones.” And the period is… what’s the word?... just a little nudge, like, “This is me,” with a little attitude in there, whether it’s how you pronounce my name or (directed toward) anybody who has tried to keep me down. We refer to our most beloved icons by one name – Cher, Madonna, Mariah, Bette – so maybe this is also your initiation into gay iconography. (Laughs) Hey, if I can get into that realm or that class, I would be very happy. It would be a huge compliment. But I’m still working toward that. Those women have done a lot more than I have! Why was it important to you to be a part of the “Fight Song” for Hillary Clinton during the Democratic National Convention? Elizabeth Banks asked me to do it. You know, I’m just … I believe in Hillary and I’m a Democrat, and I’m not trying to put off or judge anyone who isn’t, but I felt it was important to be a part of it. Now that you’re obviously tight with Elizabeth Banks, could that mean we’ll see you in Pitch Perfect 3? (Laughs) Oh god, that would be awesome. That would be great.

I WAS HELPING THEM BE HONEST WITH THEMSELVES AND BE BRAVE ABOUT COMING OUT
“Wind Beneath My Wings” is a song that’s so iconic and so owned by Bette Midler. What was it like taking it on for your upcoming Beaches remake? (Sighs) It was almost reason to say no. I mean, I did say no a couple of times at first to the whole thing because to walk

in her footsteps, I mean, you can’t. I needed to find what the reasons were to be a part of this when the (original) movie is so beautiful as is. I found that there’s a whole young generation of women who hadn’t seen Beaches. Because of the time we’re in now, as women, there’s a new perspective we have within that story, and there’s a new conversation that can go on as far as us living out our passions and our work and our home life. It’s a little different when you watch the movie now, in this context of life. There’s more that we can bring to it to update it. But as far as the song – the song terrified me. I brought it to my producer, Greg Wells, who did “Queen of Swords” and half of the album, and I said, “How can we make this contemporary?” We sat at the piano and stripped it down, and he just found this way that brings in all these modern sounds. We stayed pretty strict to the melody and I don’t know – I’m just really happy about it. I think it came off really beautifully. It’s an homage to what was already there, but also just a new incarnation of it.
Gay men are very devoted to Beaches. Have you consulted any of them for the role? By accident I went on my Twitter feed and saw somebody who wrote, “Idina, I love you, but it’s sacrilege that you’re doing this!” I called my agent and I was like, “Tell them I can’t do it. All these gay men are mad at me and they’re gonna hate me!” But it’s just such a great role for me and the experience of being on set and working every day on this beautiful woman that is funny and talented and she gets to do drama and comedy – it was such a great experience for me and it was just hard to turn down. So I hope they’ll forgive me! I understand if they cannot. But you know, come on, Judy Garland redid A Star is Born and then Barbra redid Judy Garland! So sometimes these things happen. I’m not saying I’m any of those women, but you know, sometimes we redo these movies. Earlier this year, you reunited with your Wicked co-star Kristin Chenoweth and sang “For Good” with her for the first time in 12 years. What was it like to revisit that song a decade-plus later with Kristin and can we expect you to work on anything else with her? Ah, maybe! Yeah, I would never say never to that. That experience that day was very powerful for both of us, and very moving. We both sung that song a lot through the years in our own concerts, but we hadn’t gotten back and sung it together. And you know, that show changed our lives and the trajectory of our careers. It bonded us – it bonded lots of people – and it’s a song that people connect to in so many ways. They use it at their weddings and their dances with their mothers and they play it at funerals. It’s this incredible song, and for us to have sort of originated that – and together – it’s something we’ll always share. We felt such a pride about it. Are you going to be OK if Wicked gets made into a film with actresses other than you and Kristin? No, I’m gonna – no! I’m gonna have a hard time with that. (Laughs) Let’s be honest… you want me to be honest? Or do you want me to say, “Oh, sure, can’t wait for whoever looks 20 years younger than me but can’t sing as good as me gets the role”? They better not fuck it up, right? They better not fuck it up! I’m lobbying to do it like Benjamin Button. A little CGI on a beautiful, green face. I could look gorgeous! Like, who cares – just take out a couple wrinkles. Green and exotic. I still have a girly innocence about me. And here I am trying to audition for this role... (Laughs) I’m sorry, Idina; believe it or not, I have no say in this. (Laughs) No, it’s all good. It’s not gonna happen for a while anyway. I’ll be 70 by the time it comes out and still be trying to get this role. The special effects will be even better in 30 years. (Laughs) I hope I’m just not in Vegas in some bad lounge singing it, that’s all I hope.

Comprised of 14 “legendary performances” from the diva’s 1963-1964 musical variety TV series, it features her renditions of staples from her repertoire including “The Man That Got Away,” “Swanee,” “Smile,” “What’ll I Do” and, of course, “Over The Rainbow.” Particularly delightful are duets with Ray Bolger (“If I Only Had A Brain”), Tony Bennett (“I Left My Heart In San Francisco”), and the now classic 1963 pairing with Barbra Streisand on the “Get Happy”/“Happy Days Are Here Again.” All of this and pink vinyl, too! The vinyl for the 40th anniversary reissue of Diana Ross’ eponymous 1976 Motown album may not be pink (it’s black), but it’s definitely the first of a succession of records that would be among the most beloved by her queer fans. The now famous cover photo, taken by legendary gay photographer (Victor) Skrebneski, on which Ross gave good face, is the perfect place to start, setting the mood for what was inside. Album opener, “Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You’re Going)” became an immediate standard for drag queens around the globe. Other ballads such as “I Thought It Took A Little Time (But Today I Fell In Love)” and “After You,” also showed Ross at her best. However, it was the almost eight-minute “Love Hangover,” Ross’ crossover disco sensation (also heard in the Diane Keaton movie Looking For Mr. Goodbar) that made her a full-fledge disco diva, paving the way for later club classics such as “The Boss,” “No One Gets The Prize,” “Upside 40 • LIVING OUT
Down” and “I’m Coming Out.” With the exception of a couple of tracks (the campy “Kiss Me Now,” for instance), this 40 year old album still sounds as timeless as ever. The fourth of Fleetwood Mac’s multi-platinum studio albums, 1982’s Mirage (WB), has been reissued in a marvelous expanded deluxe edition, including the original LP on 180 gram vinyl, three CDs and one DVD audio disc. In addition to the two massive hit singles, Christine McVie’s “Hold Me” and Stevie Nicks’ “Gypsy,” Mirage found the band returning to the more commercially accessible sound of 1977’s Rumours, although traces of 1979’s Tusk can be heard in Lindsey Buckingham tunes such as “Empire State,” “Book of Love” and the aptly titled “Can’t Go Back.” Nicks also shines on “Straight Back” and sweet country emotion of “That’s Alright.” The second disc features 20 “outtakes & sessions” and includes the Mac’s cover of Bob Nolan’s “Cool Water,” previously available on the second edition of the Revenge of the Killer B’s compilation. The third disc was recorded live at the Forum in Los Angeles in October 1982 and the DVD audio presents Mirage in 5.1 Surround and 24/96 Stereo Audio. Learn (Frontier) by Rikk Agnew Band, on 180 gram vinyl, is a new album with deep roots in the past. Agnew, the singer/ songwriter of influential 1980s O.C. hardcore punk band The Adolescents and goth outfit Christian Death, is still a brutal force to be reckoned with. But don’t be fooled by the hopeful tone of the anthemic and accessible opener “I Can’t Change The World”; Agnew hasn’t softened in the least. “Ripped To The Tits” is a cautionary tale about excess and moderation. The aptly named “Bash!” confronts police violence and the title track asks “what the hell is wrong with society?,” while “Punkbelly” introduces us to a frightening new kind of ailment.

Discs by the Numbers When the David Bowie box set Five Years 19691973 was released in 2015, he was still alive. The second installment in the CD box set series, Who Can I Be Now? [1974-1976] (Parlophone), proves that time, like Bowie, changes with the velocity and subtlety of a chameleon, arriving as it does eight months after Bowie’s passing. Focusing on three studio albums – the glammy Diamond Dogs (featuring “Rebel Rebel” and “1984”), the Philly soul/disco of Young Americans (featuring the title cut and “Fame”), and the groundbreaking and breathtaking Station To Station (featuring “Golden Years” and “TVC15”), presented in the original 1976 version as well as the 2010 Harry Maslin mix – Who Can I Be Now? is a fitting title under which these recordings are compiled. Additionally, the set includes live recordings – two versions of 1974’s David Live and Live Nassau Coliseum ’76. As with Five Years, Who Can I Be Now? also features a disc of single edits and live version. Of special interest is The Gouster, a previously unreleased album of some songs (such as “Young Americans” and “Somebody Up There Likes Me”) that went on to become the Young Americans album. Released prior to Paul McCartney’s (latest) return to Capitol Records, the double-disc collection Pure McCartney (MPL/ Concord) features 39 tracks. It’s amazing to think that someone as prolific as McCartney has been as a solo artist has only had four career compilations – 1978’s Wings Greatest, 1987’s All The Best, 2001’s Wingspan and now Pure McCartney. The 39 tracks presented here are said to have been curated by Sir Paul and more than half of the tunes are from his hit-laden 1970’s period, from “Maybe I’m Amazed” and “Uncle Albert/ Admiral Halsey” through “With A Little Luck” and “Goodnight Tonight.” Superstar duets such as “Ebony And Ivory” (with Stevie Wonder) and “Say Say Say” (with the late Michael Jackson) represent the `80s. There are also a few songs from the 1990s and numbers as recent as “My Valentine” and “Save Us,” from 2012’s Kisses On the Bottom and 2013’s New, respectively. But albums such as Press To Play, Driving Rain and Flowers In The Dirt are overlooked. If you are looking for a more thorough and pure experience, definitely spring for the 67-track, four-disc Pure McCartney set. You just never know who’s going to get the deluxe reissue treatment. Take The Verve, for example, a band whose heyday coincided with the 1990s British invasion led by Oasis and Blur. Twenty-one years after its initial release, The Verve’s second

album, A Northern Soul (Virgin/Universal) has been reissued in a deluxe triple-disc box set including the remastered album, a disc of EP b-sides, a previously unreleased disc of studio and BBC sessions, a poster, postcards and a book. The Verve didn’t really hit it big in the states until its third album, Urban Hymns, containing the massive hit single “Bittersweet Symphony,” but listening to A Northern Soul, can give listeners the necessary background to explain how the band was able to achieve such success just a couple of years later. Standout tracks such as “History,” “On Your Own,” “This Is Music,” and “Drive You Home,” are some good examples of this. Elvis Presley has been dead almost 40 years and somehow there’s enough material to be mined for a new release such as the double-disc Way Down in the Jungle Room (RCA/Legacy). A compilation of The King’s final studio recordings, recorded in 1976 in Graceland’s den, aka the Jungle Room, with members of his longtime touring band, the set includes some songs that previously appeared on From Elvis Presley Boulevard, Memphis, Tennessee and Moody Blue. Highlights include Elvis’ renditions of “She Thinks I Still Care,” “Hurt,” “Danny Boy,” “Solitaire” and “It’s Easy For You.”

Q-Music

Holiday Hooten ann y
There’s some wonderful about holiday standards sung a cappella. Wouldn’t you agree? Pentatonix, featuring gay members Mitch Grassi and Scott Hoying, certainly does. A Pentatonix Christmas (RCA) brings the a cappella group’s holiday release tally to three, including the 2012 EP PTXmas and 2015’s full-length That’s Christmas To Me. In addition to two originals, “The Christmas Sing-Along” and “Good To Be Bad,” the quintet adds its distinctive touch to holiday favorites including “O Come All Ye Faithful,” “Up On The Housetop” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.” Pentatonix also earns points for teaming up with the legendary Manhattan Transfer on “White Christmas” and digging out *Nsync’s “Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays.” The five-piece also performs a lovely rendition of Leonard Cohen’s oft-covered “Hallelujah,” although the appropriateness of the song’s inclusion on a disc of Christmas songs is puzzling to say the least. Acoustic Christmas (Capitol) by Neil Diamond, who is sounding more and more like fellow yeshiva bocher Leonard Cohen with each passing year, contains more sweet caroling (get it?) from the music legend. “Children Go Where I Send Thee” and “Go Tell It On The Mountain” are given the full gospel treatment when Diamond is joined by The Blind Boys of Alabama. Living up the claim of the title, Diamond delivers acoustic versions of familiar holiday numbers including “Do You Hear What I Hear?,” “Silent Night,” “O Holy Night” and “Hark The Herald Angels Sing.” He also unwraps a pair of new original songs, “Christmas Prayers” and “Make A Happy Song” (included in the disc’s “Christmas Medley”). On his first solo Christmas album, ‘Tis The Seasons (Rhino), Frankie Valli reteams with fellow Four Season Bob Gaudio, who acts as producer. You almost wish that Valli had done something like this sooner, when his voice still had its earlier strength. Nevertheless, it’s nice to hear what Valli does with tinsel tunes such as “The Christmas Song,” “Merry Christmas, Baby” (on which he is joined by Jeff Beck), a disco-y “Frosty The Snowman,” “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!,” and “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve.” Susan Boyle’s A Wonderful World (SYCO/Columbia), with its leafless snow-covered trees and the suggestion of snowflakes in her hair on the cover, is a holiday album without ever stating the obvious. Angels dominate on ABBA’s “I Have A Dream” and Robbie Williams’ “Angels,” while Boyle’s as schmaltzy as all get out on An American Tail’s “Somewhere Out There” (a duet with Michael Bolton, no less) and her reading of McCartney’s “Mull of Kintyre” verges on the patriotic. The real surprise is how she cleans up Madonna’s “Like A Prayer.” No icon smooching there. Focusing on the “seasonal relevance” of the holiday, distinctive jazz vocalist Kurt Elling leaves his mark on both traditional and modern Christmas music on The Beautiful Day: Kurt Elling Sings Christmas (Okeh/Masterworks). Aside from familiar carols including “We Three Kings” and “Little Drummer Boy,” Elling croons Donny Hathaway’s “This Christmas,” the Roches’ “Star of Wonder,” Dan Fogelberg’s “Same Old Lang Syne,” and three Leslie Bricusse songs – “Sing A Christmas Carol,” “Christmas Children” and “The Beautiful Day,” from the soundtrack to the 1970 Albert Finney movie musical “Scrooge.” 42

A portion of the sales of Band of Merrymakers’ Welcomes To Our Christmas Party (Portrait) benefits MusiCares, an organization serving musicians “in times of financial, personal, or medical crisis.” Led by producer/songwriter Sam Hollander and Better Than Ezra’s Kevvin Griffin, Band of Merrymakers are described as “a rotating group of traveling troubadours,” including Natasha Bedingfield, Fitz & The Tantrums’ Michael Fitzpatrick, Christina Perri, Bebe Rexha and Dan Wilson, among others. With the exception of a handful of song (such as “Jingle Bells”), the disc features a number of appealing new Christmas tunes for this holiday season and those to follow. The digital re-release of the album includes the new song “A Very Merry Medley” featuring out musician Tyler Glenn, Lisa Loeb and others. It’s fitting that on the 20th anniversary of the release of the first Trans-Siberian Orchestra Christmas album that there is a new one, The Ghosts of Christmas Eve (Atlantic/Rhino) hitting store shelves. If the seasonal sentiments of Pentatonix, Neil Diamond, Frankie Valli and Susan Boyle are far too tame for your liking, then prog-rock act Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s rock-opera style version of holiday music just might your cup of spiked eggnog. In addition to its interpretations of “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “O Holy Night,” Trans-Siberian Orchestra add 10 of its own original compositions to the Christmas music canon. Someday At Christmas (Portrait) by classical crossover teen diva and TV talent show competitor Jackie Evancho collects some of “Jackie’s favorite holiday songs” on one CD. A seasonal blend of previously released material (duets with Placido Domingo and Vittorio Grigolo as well as solo recordings of “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” and “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear”), the disc also includes new recordings such as the title tune and “Little Drummer Boy” (featuring Il Volo).

Gift Guide 2016 The gift of books
What a great year 2016 has been for books. It’s been especially good when it comes to books by and about queer people. That’s why these outstanding titles in poetry, fiction, non-fiction and even picture books should make holiday shopping a breeze.
Literary language Primer (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2016), the third fulllength book by gay poet and educator Aaron Smith is a devastating poetry collection that explores some of the darker corners of existence while letting in just enough light for the poems to glow with a cool radiance. The seven short stories in At Danceteria and other stories (Squares and Rebels Press, 2016), the debut collection by Philip Dean Walker, are deeply entrenched in the 1980s and feature appearances by era icons Keith Haring, Princess Diana, Freddie Mercury, Halston, Liza Minnelli, and Sylvester, among others. The late, renowned African-American lesbian-feminist poet and performer Pat Parker (1944-1989) is feted with the massive compilation The Complete 44

Works of Pat Parker (Sapphic Classics/A Midsummer Night’s Press/Sisnister Wisdom, 2016). Edited by Julie R. Enszer and with an introduction by Judy Grahn, the substantial tome contains poetry, prose and two plays. Set during the Cold War and based on the “hidden life” of award-winning lesbian writer Lucy Jane Bledsoe’s aunt, the novel A Thin Bright Line (University of Wisconsin Press, 2016) follows Lucybelle’s struggles with “the impossible compromises of queer life” at the dawn of the civil rights movement. Sinister Wisdom editor/ publisher and poet Julie R. Enszer’s new fulllength poetry collection Avowed (Sibling Rivalry Press, 2016) encompasses celebration and mourning, and the various aspects of being a lesbian in a long-term relationship, including being the one who “always” does the dishes. Straight author Ann Patchett, who created unforgettable queer characters in her 1997 novel The Magician’s
Assistant, returns with her remarkable new novel Commonwealth (Harper, 2016), about a few generations of the Keating and Cousins families. Winner of the 2015 Agnes Lynch Starrett Poetry Prize, In the Volcano’s Mouth (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2016) the debut collection by queer poet Miriam Bird Greenberg, is considered to be “portrait of life on the enchanted margins.” Fittingly described as a “contemporary odyssey,” The Troubleseeker (Chelsea Station Editions, 2016) by Alan Lessik combines Greek mythology and Cuban Santería as a means of telling the story of Antinio in post-revolution Cuba through the early days of the AIDS epidemic.
