LGBT Network Featured At Governor Cuomo’s Sustainable Development & Collaborative Governance Conference
On September 21, 2016, Governor Andrew Cuomo hosted the region’s third annual Sustainability Conference in Melville, which brought together over 600 community development experts, local elected officials, and business leaders to share successful strategies for smart growth and community development. LGBT Network CEO David Kilmnick presented as part of a panel on downtown revitalization. He examined the role of the forthcoming Patchogue LGBT Center as a means for addressing community needs efficiently and providing much-needed services all under one roof. The event was hosted by Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, who lauded the Patchogue LGBT Center project and said “this is where we need to be investing our support and state dollars, because programs like this L-R: Hon. Peter Cavallaro, Mayor of Westbury Village; David Kilmnick, LGBT Network CEO; Howard Zemsky, President & CEO of Empire State provide an indispensable service to young people and Development Corp; Doon Gibbs, Laboratory Director of Brookhaven National Laboratory; Patricia Snyder, Executive Director of East End Arts people of all ages that was not being provided before.”

California Bans State Funded Travel To States That Discriminate Against LGBT People Towleroad – California lawmakers have approved a ban on state-funded travel to other states that discriminate against LGBT people. Introduced by Assembly Member Evan Low last February and signed by California Governor Jerry Brown on September 27th, AB 1887 prohibits “a state agency and the Legislature from requiring any of its employees, officers, or members to travel to, or approving a request for state-funded or state-sponsored travel to, any state that, after June 26, 2015, has enacted a law that voids or repeals, or has the effect of voiding or repealing, existing state or local protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression or has enacted a law that authorizes or requires discrimination against same-sex couples or their families or on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression, as specified, subject to certain exceptions.” Earlier this year, Washington, Vermont, New York City, San Francisco, Seattle and New York banned official travel to North Carolina because of that state’s contentious HB2 law.
Transgender Robber Who North Carolina’s Governor Wanted Back In Prison Gets Courted Anti-LGBT Pastors Hours Before Deadly 6 Years AP – A transgender woman who robbed a bank in an attempt to be sent back to prison expressed a change in heart, and a sympathetic judge sentenced her Wednesday to six years in a federal women’s prison, far less than the 20 years she could have gotten. Federal prosecutor Stuart Healy said “I don’t think anybody in this courtroom can imagine the suffering Linda has gone through in this life to get here.” Thompson was featured in a 2007 documentary, “Cruel and Unusual,” about the problems that incarceration in men’s prisons present for inmates who identify as female. In the film, Thompson described castrating herself after Idaho prison officials wouldn’t give her hormone treatments.
Hurricane Hit
Buzzfeed – As Hurricane Matthew barreled toward the North Carolina coast on Friday, Gov. Pat McCrory spent the night on stage addressing far-right pastors, asking them to support the state’s controversial anti-LGBT law and back his reelection. “You have five weeks, or four-and-a-half weeks, to speak out in North Carolina,” McCrory implored the group on Friday, according to a recording of the event obtained by BuzzFeed News. McCrory lamented the backlash to the law, which restricts restroom access for transgender people, and denounced his Democratic challenger, who opposes the law. “I don’t agree with the concept of redefining gender,” he said. “Let your congregations and your businesses, and everyone else know. Are there people behind this issue or not? We’re going to find out.”
The US Has Run Out Of Injectable Estrogen for Trans Women – Again
Buzzfeed – A national shortage of injectable estrogen has left thousands of trans women without their preferred – and often, they say, life-saving – option for feminizing their bodies: redistributing fat to produce smaller waists and bigger hips, enhancing breasts, rounding out their faces and boosting mood. The simultaneous shortage of the two injectable forms of estrogen — Delestrogen, the brand-name version, and estradiol valerate, its generic formula — has left clinics and patients scrambling for alternatives. Although the generic was supposed to be made available in October, this week the FDA announced that it was pushing its availability back yet another month, but even that date is no guarantee. Exactly why the drugs ran out remains unclear, and blame bounces between the pharmaceutical companies that make the drug, and the FDA, which regulates it. 8

Hillary Clinton Addresses LGBT Equality
In a historic Op-Ed submitted to the Philadelphia Gay News, Hillary Clinton Details her LGBT-rights record and her goals for future LGBT equality efforts. This is the first time a major-party presidential candidate has written an op-ed for an LGBT newspaper. While acknowledging the huge strides made for LGBT rights during President Obama’s tenure, Clinton writes, “…the simple truth is that even now, in 2016, there are still too many states in America where LGBT people can be fired or evicted from their home because of who they are or who they love. Pennsylvania is one of them. Here, you can get married on Sunday and fired on Monday, just for being gay or transgender. That goes against everything we stand for as a country. We need to act on the federal level to take on discrimination in all its forms. That’s what I’ll do as President — with your help.”
Texas Judge Officiates Same-Sex Marriage, Then Quits Republican Party
LGBTQ Nation – A Texas judge has quit the Republican Party after officiating his first same-sex marriage, deciding he had had enough of its intolerance. Justice Terry Jennings will now be the only Democrat on the Texas First Court of Appeals after pulling the trigger on the decision he had been mulling over for years, with the encouragement of his children who wondered why he was staying with a party from which he was feeling increasingly alienated. Jennings said when some mentioned that many Republican judges might not be willing to preside over a same-sex marriage, “that’s when I started thinking, Well maybe I’m not in the right party then.”
CoverGirl Announces First Ever Cover Boy
The Washington Times – James Charles, a 17-year-old male amateur makeup artist from Bethlehem, New York, with large Instagram and YouTube followings, has parlayed his social media fame into a historic contract with the cosmetic brand CoverGirl. He becomes the first ever biologically male CoverGirl for the makeup line and “will appear in ads for CoverGirl’s new product So Lashy! by blastPRO Mascara,” Yahoo! Beauty said on Tuesday. “Breaking gender norms just comes instantly as soon as a boy is comfortable and confident enough to put on makeup,” Mr. Charles told BuzzFeed. “I think it’s so important to love who you are and be comfortable in your own skin.”
Murders of Trans Women Reaches Record High After Cleveland Woman Found Dead
LGBTQ Nation – Brandi Bledsoe, a 32-year-old transgender woman from Cleveland, Ohio, was found dead in her backyard this month, bringing the total of reported transgender homicides to 23 so far this year. Bledsoe came out as transgender two years ago and had never been happier according to her family. “She wasn’t very outgoing before she told us,” her cousin, John Craggett, told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “She just wasn’t happy with who she was. When she told us, she was honestly a lot better as Brandi. She was happy.” No arrests have been made in the case.

Gay Marriage in Australia Unlikely for Years after Public Vote Plan Rejected CNN – Australia's parliament is almost certain to vote down a national referendum on same-sex marriage, potentially delaying marriage equality in the country for years. Though it backs same-sex marriage, the left-wing opposition Labor party formally announced Tuesday it would not support the government's planned national vote. They say a public vote is unnecessary, too costly and would trigger a divisive public debate which could traumatize young gay and lesbian Australians. Instead, Labor, and other opposition parties, want same-sex marriage to be passed by Parliament immediately -- something which government conservatives are dead set against. All of this leaves Australia's gay community hanging.
Indonesia Bars LGBT Job Applicants for New Youth Position BBC - The Indonesian government has posted an advert for a new youth ambassador position that orders members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community not to apply. The advert stipulates that the post is only open to applicants not involved in "sexually deviant behavior". It says this must be proven with a doctor's certificate. Critics have accused the government in effect of destroying the futures of creative young LGBT people. They have been barred from serving their country because of their sexuality, campaigners say. Gay sex is not illegal in Indonesia, and the world's largest Muslim country has a vibrant transgender culture. It is a tradition which is broadly met tolerantly by the Indonesian public. But in recent months there has been a hardening of attitudes against the LGBT community from the political elite, the BBC's Rebecca Henschke in Jakarta says.
UK Government “Committed” to Alan Turing Gay Pardon Law BBC – Proposals to introduce new legislation which would pardon gay men convicted under historical gross indecency laws will be brought forward "in due course", the government has said. The so-called Alan Turing law could see thousands of men pardoned for crimes of which they would be innocent today. World War Two code-breaker Turing was pardoned in 2013, decades after he was convicted of gross indecency in 1952. A government spokesman said it was "committed" to the proposal. "This government is committed to introducing posthumous pardons for people with certain historical sexual offense convictions who would be innocent of any crime now," the spokesman said. Homosexuality was decriminalised in England in 1967.

Haiti LGBT Festival Cancelled Due To Threats BBC – Organizers have called off a festival celebrating Haiti's Afro-Caribbean lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community because of threats of violence and government opposition. Jean Danton Leger, commissioner of Portau-Prince, said he had blocked the event to protect public morals. It came after the Haitian lawmaker, known for homophobic views, called for the Massimadi festival to be banned. One of the event's organizers described discrimination homosexuals faced. "Our festival was postponed precisely because there has been a verbal ban by the government commissioner of Port au Prince, Jean Danton Leger," said Jeudy Charlot. "Homosexually is frowned upon, perceived as evil. At times, they may be ridiculed, they can be attacked." Meanwhile, Lorraine Mangones, another of the festival's organizers, said her team had been "receiving threats of outrageous violence". There are no laws prohibiting homosexuality in Haiti. LIVING OUT

I
told my mom I interviewed Mariah Carey and she cried. “I know how much this means to you,” she said, verklempt. She knows Mariah saved my life. I was 10 and confused and gay when I first heard her voice. It was one of those meant-tobe moments: A friend eagerly, and thankfully, played me the cassette single of “Emotions.” That voice, all seven octaves, captivated me, changed me. Years later, when I heard the curly-haired, hand-wavey songstress singing pick-me-ups like “Hero,” “Make It Happen” and “Can’t Take That Away (Mariah’s Theme),” I was lifted beyond those signature high notes. In 1997, I was 15 and still confused, on the brink of selfdiscovery, without a role model. The parallel wasn’t lost on me – Mariah was coming into her authentic self, channeling the artist she never could be on the triumphant confessional Butterfly, a metaphorical nod to the newfound freedom she was feeling after years of professional and personal captivity. The album, which turns 20 next year, ended on a deeply intimate note with “Outside,” where she referenced the inferior feelings she harbored as a biracial child. As a gay adolescent internalizing the “feeling there’s no one completely the same,” as the song goes, my alreadystrong bond to the chart-topper, the diva, the survivor – my musical salvation, my “it gets better” – was strengthened. It was more than music. It is and has always been a palpable affinity to Mariah’s courageous and encouraging life story. The story of an emancipated 27-year-old woman asserting independence. The story of a broken-winged 31-year-old woman who, a decade into her illustrious career, hit rock bottom, entered rehab for “exhaustion” and more than made it through the rain – four years later, in 2005, “We Belong Together,” the second single off The Emancipation of Mimi, held the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for 14 weeks. For Mariah’s ever-faithful “lambs” who, too, have experienced or are still experiencing the outside, it’s her inspirational narrative they’ve clung to with undying devotion. Nearly 25 years after first hearing her voice on cassette, my phone rings. It’s Mariah Carey, the sales-crushing icon with a whopping 18 No. 1 singles, the five-time Grammy winner, my childhood lifeline, our ally. As we speak, I’d be remiss not to acknowledge the roots of our connection, so I do. We also, of course, talk about Vegas, where she’s headlining The Colosseum at Caesars Palace with her hits show, Mariah #1 to Infinity, now armed with more “confidence,” she says, to go on vocal “tangents.” Naturally, her lingerie collection comes up. Furthermore, Mariah elaborates on the “unconditional love” she’s experienced from the LGBT community, which she emphasized when GLAAD recently recognized her with an Ally Award for all the lives she’s changed. An honor she received, in part, and most admirably, by changing her own.

You can’t see me right now but I’m bowing down. Awww! I’m bowing down right back. I’m going to start with the GLAAD Media Awards because what a big moment for me, too, as a gay man to finally see you honored for being an ally. You acknowledged the “unconditional love” from the LGBTQ community, and it’s true: I’ve never had anything less than that for you. To be completely honest, you and your music were why I followed my dream of being a writer who one day wanted to interview you. And here we are. Anyway, Lamb 4 Life right here; not even kidding. Oh, wow; that’s amazing! L4L! Seriously – that’s such a great thing to hear; thank you for telling me that. What did you mean when you said you haven’t experienced much unconditional love outside of the gay community? And why do you think the gay community in particular has stuck by you through thick and thin? What I was trying to express – and it was all so fast and it wasn’t the world’s greatest speech ’cause I just wanted to try and speak from my heart and, you know, sometimes there’s so much going on and it’s not the best representation of what I really wanted to say, which would’ve been simpler. Which is basically: Some of the songs that I have written, like I have a song called “Outside” that a lot of people from the gay community have always said they grew up listening to and were like, “That helped me come out to my family.” Different things. And so, as a songwriter, I wrote that song about me feeling like an outsider, about being biracial and a lot of other things in my life. I like to leave it open so people can relate it to their own lives, and a lot of my fans tell me, “This song helped me get through having to talk about being gay with my family and with my friends,” and stuff like that. There are other songs, too, because I kind of come from that place of feeling different or not accepted, and so that’s what I meant. For me, as a teenager, “Outside” really resonated. Those lyrics – “ambiguous, without a sense of belonging to touch” – are ingrained in my head, and they had a big influence on my own life. “Looking In” as well. When were you first aware that you were kindred spirits with the gay community?

The whole thing in terms of me feeling really comfortable around all different types of people, including different races, religions, gay, straight, whatever, started as a kid. Most kids that I grew up around had never even met anyone gay, but my mom was always very theatrical and she had a lot of gay friends, so I grew up with her two best friends who were guncles before people knew what that was. And yeah, they were great to me. They really treated me well as a little girl. Obviously gay marriage wasn’t, you know, like it is now – it wasn’t legal – so they weren’t married. But they lived together and they were my example of a really great couple. They stayed together for as long as I knew them, and so to me, that was just normal. I wasn’t like, “Oh, wow, this is weird; my mom’s friend is gay.” I guess I was just always comfortable because they were kind to me, and cool. And so then when I grew up I would always naturally gravitate toward the fun gay guy in school, you know what I mean? You know! It’s just like different moments. Even a friend of mine when I was growing up, her mom was in a relationship with another woman and they lived together and the whole thing, but she didn’t know – she didn’t understand it. But because I had such an open-minded mother who explained that kind of stuff to me, I wasn’t gonna out her mother to her. I was just like, “OK, fine.” You’ve been a lifeline for many of your LGBT fans, including myself, because you’ve showed us that even an outsider can find his or her place. When was the first time in your life you were exactly the person you wanted to be? Wow. The first time I can think of, and this is a great thing that actually incorporated work and fun and being free and music, was when I made the video for “Honey” (in 1997), and I went swimming in the shoes. It was just… I always wanted to have the freedom to be myself and I wasn’t in a situation where that was OK; I wasn’t allowed to because of that, uhh, first relationship (to ex-husband and then-Sony Music head Tommy Mottola). I had to overcome a lot to get through that, but that video – prior to that, I always had to settle for less than I wanted to be, and I wasn’t allowed to be who I was. And it really took a lot of courage. It wasn’t just like, “I’m gonna make a video.” It was, “I am moving on with my life, and I have to for my own self because I’m trapped in a situation.” I know what you’re saying – I’ve been there. I mean, I’ve not made a music video... (Laughs) Treat the music video as “I had a great time somewhere!” But it included me doing work and making a video, which for me, that’s not really work if it’s fun. And then also just all the elements that I love: the beach, the water, the freedom, the whole narrative of the thing. But yeah, it took a while to get there.

You’re doing some of your earliest songs during your Vegas residency. How has your voice and your approach to singing these songs, some of which are over 20 years old, changed? You know what, certain days I’m like, “Oh, this is a really good day for me; I had a lot of vocal rest today and blah, blah, blah,” and some days for me I have to be a little bit more experimental and play around on stage because maybe it’s not as strong for that minute. Really, I just think I’ve become more confident and more experimental in a good way, if you know what I mean, in using different parts of my voice and things. I always did it, but I was more “stick to the script” and “don’t go off on a tangent.” You know, I think that people kind of like the tangents that I have! (Laughs) Singing tangents. Breaking a high heel on stage tangents; whatever the case may be. You in your lingerie making pizza tangents – all of it. (Laughs uproariously) It was real! That’s what I walk around in! I barely own any clothes! All I have is friggin’ lingerie. How have you made yourself feel at home in Vegas? I just bought a lot of lingerie! (Laughs) What do you think 1990 Mariah would think of 2016 Mariah? (Ponders; tongue sputters) Ah, I don’t knoooow! I was such a kid, just in over my head, but I knew that I was gonna do this for my life and soooo: I probably would’ve been like, “Who does your hair and makeup?” (Laughs) ’Cause they had me with some people who didn’t know what they were doing and I knew it wasn’t really good and I’d just be like, “Who does your lighting, hair and makeup?” is what I’d ask her. They liked to put you in a lot of black. They diiiiid. It was just like, ahhh, such a long story. You don’t even wanna know. We’ve seen a lot of greats pass away in the last several years: Prince, Whitney and David Bowie. In what ways do their untimely deaths have you reflecting on your own legacy and what you want that to be? It’s really interesting: I loved Prince and I still do. I love his music, and I’ll always have it, and I grew up listening to Prince,

ya know what I mean? I was lucky enough to get to know him, but before I knew him I was listening to his music as an adolescent, as a kid, so his passing was very… I really felt like he was one of those people who would be around for a really long time because he just was kind of ageless in a lot of ways. But in terms of me reflecting on my legacy? I’m not at that place right now. I’m still very much doing fun, creative things that, you know, I don’t want to go into a long, drawn out thing about, but a lot of different projects. Some movie things. I’m getting ready to go back in the studio really soon, and obviously I’m doing this residency in Vegas. It’s really fun, but I’m not trapped there. I can do other things. We just got back from the European tour, which was amazing audiences, and then we went to Africa, so it’s like, all that stuff is great. But what do I think my legacy will be? It’s really hard for me to answer that. I just hope the fans who’ve been so supportive of me throughout my whole career will have my music and it’ll make a difference in people’s lives as you told me it did for you, which is amazing, because not everyone knows songs like “Outside” or “Looking In” or “Close My Eyes.” “I was a wayward child”… trust me, I know those words by heart. Trust me, I do too. “...with the weight of the world that I held deep inside.” Is the weight lifted? You know what – is the weight lifted? Ahhh, I think that it’s different now. It’s just different. ... I don’t want that to be misinterpreted; I don’t want you to misinterpret that. I just mean like, in a lot of ways there are other things that are the “weight of the world” to me. Like my life now, I have other responsibilities. I was really writing that about the child version of me; I really did have the weight of the world on my shoulders as a kid, that’s how deep it felt for me. Thanks for clarifying so nobody takes that out of context. (Groans dramatically) I knooooow. Mariah, I so deeply appreciate this moment and it means more than you’ll ever know. I hope our paths will cross again at some point soon. I really thank you so much. I thank you for talking about the music. Really – I appreciate that. I adore you, daaahhhling!

ANGER
Even before you sit down to watch the 40th anniversary collector’s edition double-disc Blu-ray of Carrie (MGM/Shout Factory), for the first or the 50th time, it’s important to remember a few things. Carrie was the first (and possibly best) adaptation of a Stephen King novel. It’s the Brian De Palma film that set the stage for films by the director that followed such as “The Fury,” “Dressed To Kill,” and “Blow Out.” Carrie was ultimately a women’s picture and featured Oscar-nominated performances by Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie (she was robbed!), Betty Buckley’s film debut, and included nasty character such as Chris (Nancy Allen) and Norma (P.J. Soles), who would define the “mean girls” title. Additionally, Carrie starred period heartthrob hunks John Travolta and William Katt, causing much swooning among teenage girls and gay boys alike. Pino Donaggio’s terrifying score perfectly set the tone, especially for the Hitchcockian finale that still makes people leap out of their seats. Carrie also inspired a sequel (1999’s Rage: Carrie 2), two remakes (2002 TV, 2013 theatrical), as well as flop stage musical and a campy musical parody, although none of them came close to capturing the terror and magic of the original. Telekinetic loner Carrie (Spacek) lives with her fanatically Christian mother Margaret (Laurie) in a crumbling house overdecorated with religious “art”. Bullied at home and at school, Carrie becomes increasingly aware of her ability to move things with her mind. After an unfortunate scene in the girls’ locker room she becomes even more of a pariah. However, her social status takes a sudden turn when popular girl Sue (Amy Irving) asks her equally popular jock boyfriend Tommy (Katt) to take Carrie to the prom in an effort to make things right for the beaten-down girl. Chris (Allen) and her crew, including bonehead boyfriend Billy (Travolta), devise a plan to make the prom, from which Chris has been excluded for bad behavior, an unforgettable one. As Carrie begins to transform from greasy-haired outcast to budding beauty, with the aid of gym teacher Miss Collins (Buckley), Margaret is beside herself. Knowing firsthand the evil men do, Margaret attempts to dissuade Carrie from attending the prom and potentially making a fool of herself. As it turns out, mother knew best, and the prom turns into a bloodbath. But Carrie can take care of herself and does so in a display of gruesome violence, saving the best for mommy dearest. Blu-ray bonus features include a second disc of new cast and crew interviews and several featurettes
Directed by Mary Dore, the doc She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry (Music Box Films), explores life before, during and after the feminist movement. In the pre-internet days of mimeograph and stamps, the women’s movement arose, emerging from the anti-war, college and civil rights movements. These social change movements gave rise to women’s consciousness, leading to the beginning of a necessary revolution. Following the impact of the movement on issues including equal pay, discrimination, consciousness raising, abortion, communities of color, lesbians, women’s health, rape and self-defense, sexuality and orgasm, and integrating race, class and gender, the doc is a visual historical document. In this election year, it also serves as a reminder that no victories are permanent. However, in many instances anger can lead to action and profound change can be made through organizing. Proof positive that “the personal is political,” She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry features interviews with N.O.W.’s Muriel Fox, writer/activists Alix Kates Shulman, Susan Brownmiller, Kate Millett, out lesbians Karla Jay and Rita Mae Brown, ABC correspondent Marlene Sanders, politician Eleanor Holmes Norton, and many other important women’s voices from the movement. The DVD includes more than an hour of bonus material.

KC: StoneBridge did a remix for me of the original version. The original version was actually recorded by my namesake. My best friend Larry, his son who he named after me, is a DJ in Miami. He was on the radio and now he does clubs. He brought me this track and he and I did the lyrics (I did the majority), and I did the melody and stuff. I then sent it to StoneBridge. GS: What was it like for you to hear a song that you wrote transformed in that way? KC: It’s always interesting. We have 17 different mixes of the song right now. We have one by Tony Moran and one by Ralphi Rosario, both of whom are very big DJs. Julian Marsh, too. My nephew did a remix. Also DJ Laszlo, who has had some number one dance records with Justin Bieber. It’s very interesting to hear their take on the track. It’s really exciting, actually. GS: Does the single mean that there is a new full-length album forthcoming, and if so, will it be in keeping with the new sound of the single? KC: That’s a good question because the album, which is pretty much sitting in the can, has a mixture of that new sound, some funkier numbers that I did with the band, some mid-tempo stuff and some ballad. I may end up putting out this full-length dance record or do a double set where half of it is funk and the other half is dance. I don’t know. GS: That would be cool because you haven’t done anything like that before. KC: That’s correct. GS: The cover image of the “We Belong Together” single is a circle divided into three sections featuring drawings of three couples. There is a male couple, a female couple and a mixed gender couple.
been to many gay and straight clubs and I have fun in every one of them. It’s always great to hear my music played and to be there with everyone. GS: With what you just said in mind, as well as the new song, could you ever see KC and the Sunshine Band performing at a Pride Festival? KC: When I wrote this song it was about a relationship that I felt I wanted to have with someone. I felt like the two of us belonged together. With everything going on, it felt like the social events redirected the entire message. It seemed appropriate – the song’s about two people being together. You can’t isolate the fact that it’s just a man and a woman. There are guys who want to be together, there are woman who want to be together, and there and men and women who want to be together. I felt it should encompass everybody. It’s time that there was some unity. After what happened in Orlando and what’s happening worldwide. There’s so much hate and craziness. I felt like it was time to say, “Enough already!. We all need to accept everyone. People have the right to love who they love and nobody should have anything to say about it!” GS: Yes, that’s true. From the early days of disco through the present day, people were guaranteed to hear dance music being played in gay clubs. Were you aware of KC and the Sunshine Band songs being played in gay clubs? KC: Absolutely! GS: Were you aware of a gay following for the band as well?
KC: I don’t think we’ve ever been invited. We definitely wouldn’t turn it down. We’ve never been asked that I know of. If everything was in order, I would definitely perform there. GS: Finally, you mentioned Orlando. As someone closely associated with Florida, can you please say a few words about the Orlando tragedy? KC: I think we all felt it. I think we all cried for it. I think it finally opened a lot of people’s eyes, more than they had been. It let people know that people in the gay community are real people too. They have lives and families and friends. They do normal things. They were viciously attacked. It could happen to anyone. I think it opened the eyes of a lot of close-minded people. Unfortunately, it took a tragedy like that to do that. I’ve been getting some backlash about the artwork for the record. I really don’t care. I’ve made comments on Facebook about it. Everyone has the right to love and worship whoever and whatever they want to. It’s nobody’s business but theirs. We are not the ones to judge that. I expected that to happen, but I don’t care. If people are that close-minded, I feel pity for them and I have compassion for them.
KC: I don’t know if I felt that as much. I would hope that everyone likes my music. My music was made with everyone in mind with no prejudice towards anyone. I would hope that everyone would embrace our music. It’s constructed for everyone. I’ve

Q-Music

High on Solos Beyoncé (Knowles) first came across our radar as the dominant diva in the allfemale, modern R&B group Destiny’s Child. But it didn’t take long for Queen Bey to fly the hive and make honey as a solo artist beyond measure. Thirteen years and six albums into her solo career, Beyoncé has exceeded all expectations with her latest release, Lemonade (Parkwood/Columbia). Her excellent eponymous 2013 disc was going to be a hard act to follow, but squeezing a thirst quenching song cycle out of domestic distress has turned out to be her forte. Beginning with the “dishonesty… all over your breath” in “Pray You Catch Me,” it’s fair to say that this drink is going to be tart. It’s also worth noting that the disc is a testament to working with the right collaborators, such as James Blake (“Pray You Catch Me” and “Forward”), Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend (“Hold Up”), Jack White (“Don’t Hurt Yourself”), The Weeknd (“6 Inch”), Wynter Gordon (“Daddy Lessons”), Kendrick Lamar (“Freedom”) Proper placement of classic samples (including “Can’t Get Used To Losing You,” “When The Levee Breaks” and “Walk On By” ) also go a long way in setting the tone. Finally, dramatically delivered number such as “Sandcastles” and “Formation” are too powerful to forget. Would you look at that? The kids from Nickel Creek are all grown up! Chris Thile, for example, is a dad and is about to take over A Prairie Home Companion hosting duties following Garrison Keillor’s impending retirement. Fiddler and singer Sara Watkins has just released her third album, the interestingly titled Young In All the Wrong Ways (New West). Watkins rocks us (and herself) on the title track and “Move Me,” with strong results. Even when she finds her way back to her modern Americana roots, as she does on the delightful “One Last Time,” the foot-stomper “The Truth Won’t Set Us Free,” and serious numbers such as “Like New Year’s Day,” ”Without A Word,” “Tenderhearted” and “Invisible,” she puts a distinctive spin on what we hear. Thirty years after the release of Graceland , and at almost 75 years old, with Stranger To Stranger (Concord), Paul Simon continues the 21st century streak of creative brilliance that began with 2006’s Brian Enoproduced Surprise and 2013’s Phil Ramone-produced So Beautiful or So What. Reunited with “his old partner” producer Roy Halee (co-producer of Simon & Garfunkel’s Bookends and Bridge Over Troubled Waters , as well as numerous Simon solo efforts), Simon sounds as fresh and modern as ever. who has incorporated international influences in his music since his first post-Simon & Garfunkel album in 1972, continues to expand his musical palette with this album. Still our greatest living story-songwriter, Simon reels us in immediately with the terrifying (on many levels)“The Werewolf,” and doesn’t release us for nearly 40 minutes. The humorous “Wristband,” the ominous instrumental “The Clock,” “Street Angel” (which makes great use of samples), the exhilarating “In A Parade” (which could be a massive club track with the right remix), and the three breathtaking tunes that close the album (“The Riverbank,” “Cool Papa Bell” and the devastatingly beautiful “Insomniac’s Lullaby”) automatically qualify this album as one of the best of 2016. In case we forgot that Alice Bag was the former lead singer of LA punk legends The Bags, she opens her long overdue eponymous solo debut (on Don Giovanni) with the searing “Little Hypocrite.” However, it’s what follows that tune that really rocks our world. The girl-group retro of “He’s So Sorry,” is a kind of brilliant answer song to the unfortunate 50 year old Carole King/Gerry Goffin number “He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss) .” Bag also bags it on the intelligent punk of “Programmed” (“we’re on an ocean and the boat is sinking/no knowledge without critical thinking”), the infidelity heartbreaker “Suburban Home,” and the anti-sexual violence anthem “No, Means No!.” The presence of queer musicians Kristian Hoffman and Allison Wolfe only makes this disc even more essential to your music library. Highly regarded queer musician Lou Reed’s life as a solo artist was far lengthier than the time he spent in The Velvet Underground. Nevertheless, the influence of the short-lived Velvet Undergrond can still be felt today. Reed also provided plenty of inspiration to others when he went out on his own, beginning with his transformative 1972 disc Transformer, which included the massive and subversive hit single “Walk On the Wild Side.” For the next 40 years, the late Reed would go on to constantly surprise and challenge with each subsequent recording. Due to be released in October, three years after Reed’s passing, the 17 disc box set The RCA & Arista Album Collection (Legacy/RCA/Arista) compiles 17 albums, including masterpieces such as Coney Island Baby, Street Hassle, The Bells, The Blue Mask and New Sensations. Richard Ashcroft, of The Verve fame, returns with These People (Harvest/ Cooking Vinyl/RPA) his first solo album in six years. Easily one of his most accessible efforts, Ashcroft bravely (daringly?) traverses electronic dance territory on “Hold On” and “Out Of My Body,” with surprisingly satisfying results. He also doesn’t shy away from the kinds of statements he’s known for as is clear on “They Don’t Own Me,” “Songs of Experience” and “Everybody Needs Somebody To Hurt” (which is reminiscent of “Bittersweet Symphony”). We Were Wild (Grand Jury), the latest solo album by Esmé Patterson of the Denver band Paper Bird , is equal parts wild (“Feel Right,” “Moth Song,” “Come See Me” and “The Waves” ) and tame (“Guadalupe,” “Wantin Ain’t Gettin” and “Yours And Mine”) and thoroughly enjoyable. Formerly of Titus Andronicus, Amy Klein, whose vocal style is reminiscent of Romeo Void’s Debora Iyall, burns it up on her solo debut Fire (Don Giovanni), particularly on the title track, “Twenty-Seven,” “Yes Men,” “You Are The One,” “Parallels,” “American City” and “Runaway.”

Butcher than all of yoU an interview with comedian Rhea Butcher Comedian Rhea Butcher goes a long way to dispel the myth of the humorless lesbian on her brilliantly funny comedy debut album Butcher (Kill Rock Stars). The secret to creating a comedy record that stands the test of time is how it holds up to repeated listens, and Butcher passes with flying colors. Butcher’s original and very humorous perspective and material, touching on surnames, vegetarianism, pets, pizzle sticks, gender identity, hair, and baseball vs. softball, among other subjects, deserve to be enjoyed by all comedy fans, gay and straight. I spoke with Butcher before the August 2016 release of her album. Gregg Shapiro: Rhea, who do you consider your strongest comedy influences to be?
in Chicago, my biggest influences were Maria Bamford and Paul F Tompkins.
Rhea Butcher: When I was growing up I watched a lot of standup comedy, specifically Stand Up Spotlight on VH1. That show was hosted by Rosie O’Donnell and featured a lot of women, so when I was that age, I really thought women doing stand up was a normal thing. I really liked Rosie, Ellen (DeGeneres), Brett Butler, Elayne Boosler. Then, when I actually started doing stand up
GS: Regarding the material on your debut comedy album Butcher (Kill Rock Stars), how did you know that these were the jokes that you wanted to commit to record for posterity?

RB: These were jokes that I have been working on for about five years. I feel like you could work on a joke forever, but at some point they’ve got to leave the nest.
GS: You incorporate your hair into your comedy, as we can hear on “Haircuts and Flight Attendants” on Butcher.
GS: You touch on a number of other funny lesbian hot button issues on the disc, beginning with manual transmissions. When you drive a car, do you prefer a manual or automatic transmission, and why did you choose what you did?
RB: I talk about my haircut because cutting my hair short was a big moment for me, as a lesbian. I think for queer people, things like haircuts are a turning point: when I cut my hair it was a big statement to the world. It was also me taking control of my gender. I got to make myself look the way I wanted to look.
RB: I do drive stick. I purchased my car 10 years ago on my own: I researched and test-drove cars until I found the car I still drive today. At the time I wanted a manual transmission because I was still living in the Midwest and wanted the

extra amount of control in the snow. It’s also great on gas mileage. Now that I live in LA it’s really just a point of pride that I can even drive stick.
Baseball team (from A League Of Their Own) recently. That plus the popularity of Mone Davis and the TV show Pitch debuting on Fox this fall, it’s not far off.
GS: You have a great line about being a vegetarian in which you say that you’re a vegetarian because you like animals, not because you like vegetables. How true is that?
GS: Back in the old days, major labels such as Warner Brothers released comedy albums by everyone from Bob Newhart to Steve Martin and Gilda Radner, and more recently Jimmy Fallon. Your album, Butcher, is on hipster indie label, Kill Rock Stars, and recent releases by Sarah Silverman and Tig Notaro are on equally hip indies Sub Pop and Secretly Canadian, respectively. What does it mean to you that comedy has found a home on Kill Rock Stars?
RB: 100%. I am a Midwesterner through and through. GS: The baseball versus softball bit is as funny as it is topical. Donald Trump’s Vice President pick Mike Pence recently spoke out against women in the military, so that probably doesn’t bode well for women playing baseball. Do you have hope that that will change in your lifetime? RB: I do have hope for it in my lifetime because there are many women playing baseball on a professional level, and three of them have been placed on the Sonoma Stompers minor league team: Kelsie Whitmore, Stacy Piagno, and Anna Kimbrell. Kimbrell and Whitmore played as the first all female battery (pitching and catching) since the All American Girls Professional

RB: Kill Rock Stars has been an influential label to me for years. They have put out such amazing music for so long and when I saw that they decided to move towards comedy, I thought it was a perfect fit. In some ways, the internet has democratized comedy and allowed for so many diverse voices to be heard. Kill Rock Stars is a natural extension of that voice. I am really proud to be on the label and to have the label mates who are featured on KRS. LIVING OUT

FOR BLACK VOTES
Black votes matter! So, too, the black lives many politicians pander to in order to get them. However, exploiting cultural markers- like Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump did by reading a scripted text in a black church or like Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary R. Clinton did by giving a shoutout on an a.m. urban radio show stating she, too, always carries hot sauce around with her- not only infuriates most African Americans, it also insults the political intelligence obviously both politicians think we don’t have. The stereotyped black church stands front and center for many white politicians looking to woo if not win our votes. The perception that all a white politician needs to do is merely show up the Sunday before election day Tuesday we cast our ballots is not only a hackneyed campaign strategy in 2016, but it’s also a clear indication that this politician has nary a clue nor a sincere concern for the parishioners he stands before. When Donald Trump spoke at a megachurch in Detroit with native son Dr. Ben Carson in tow it provided a good optic for a brash candidate whose pitch to us a week before at a predominately white rally was remarkably unfiltered and unapologetic: “You live in your poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs, 58 percent of your youth is unemployed. What the hell do you have to lose?” While Hillary Clinton’s more measured steps toward the African American community don’t paint us as an urban blighted monolith, her past actions — creation of the 1996
“super predator” myth to depict black youths caught up in her spouse’s crime bill that precipitated mass incarceration and still felt today- makes her appeal, especially to African American millennials - dead on arrival. “What am I supposed to do if I don’t like him and I don’t trust her?” a millennial black woman in Ohio asked. “Choose between being stabbed and being shot? No way!” Adding insult to injury when it comes to African Americans troubled relationship with this country’s penal system, Clinton acknowledges the too frequent and discriminatory use of the death penalty, but she doesn’t want it abolished. “I think there are certain egregious cases that still deserve the consideration of the death penalty, but I’d like to see those be very limited and rare.” Clinton, a former attorney, knows that many poor people spend countless years in jail for a crime they did not commit because of ineffective counseling and poor legal representation. And the presumption that African Americans and Latinos are more culpable of a crime because of the color of their skin makes her campaign pitch to Black Lives Matter activists -where prison reform is a key tenet of their platform – ring hollow. Since the passing of the 1964 Civil Rights Voting Act there has been ongoing tactics to suppress minority voting, such as changing polling locations, changing polling hours or eliminating early voting days, reducing the number of polling places, packing majority-minority districts, dividing minority districts, and the notorious voter ID laws that disproportionately disenfranchise minority voters. NC’s 4th Circuit Court of Appeals just recently overturned the requirement to show photo ID because it was instated “with racially discriminatory intent.” These ongoing tactics along with candidates, like both Trump and Clinton, who pop-up in perceived and stereotypical black spaces will catch a few of us swimming upstream. But they would do enormously better pitching a consistent campaign message that’s heard at every one of their pit stops rather than giving African American voters a wink with a tepid appearance at a black church or “sistah” shout-out about toting hot sauce. Discover something new.
