LGBT Network Launches Massive CommunityWide Campaign for National Coming Out Day The LGBT Network is launching one of its largest community organizing effort ever in its 24-year history with its National Coming Out Day (NCOD) Campaign for October 11th – National Coming Out Day. Since 2002, the LGBT Network has been organizing its NCOD Campaign in schools as a way of creating safer spaces. Over its 15-year history, the Campaign has grown – more than 100,000+ students and staff at 100 schools participated in the campaign last year. For 2017, the LGBT Network is broadening its efforts and bringing the NCOD campaign to businesses, places of worship, senior centers, non-profit organizations, government agencies, civic associations, unions, libraries, and other organizations. The goal of the LGBT Network NCOD Campaign is simple: Engage and empower the greatest number of people to take a stand against discrimination, violence, harassment, and bullying of LGBT people by coming out for safe spaces where they LIVE, LEARN, WORK, PLAY, and PRAY. “This campaign embodies the ethos and community organizing framework that has set the LGBT Network apart for 24 years,” says LGBT Network founder, President and CEO David Kilmnick. “The LGBT Network is a home and a voice for the LGBT community. We help and support LGBT people, while simultaneously working to address the discrimination, violence, harassment, and bullying that LGBT people face daily. We aim to engage everyone – not just LGBT people, but also their allies, families, and friends – so that we can build awareness throughout the community to create businesses, schools, living centers, athletic programs, places of worship, libraries, and other institutions that are space spaces for LGBT people.”

LGBT-Friendly Senior Housing Moves Forward in Bay Shore after Historic Planning Board Vote On Thursday, August 17th, The LGBT Network unveiled plans for its LGBT-friendly affordable housing apartment complex in Bay Shore. The new housing development accompanied by a brand new state-of-the-art 8,000 square-foot community center will be constructed at the site of LGBT Network’s existing community center on Park Avenue and Mechanicsville Road and near the Bay Shore Long Island Rail Road station. In a historic vote, the Town of Islip Planning Board voted unanimously to move the LGBT Network's Senior Housing and Community Center Project forward and the Islip Town Board is expected to vote on final approvals this fall. LGBT Network CEO, David Kilmnick, spoke passionately about the need for such a facility, “No one should ever feel like they cannot be their true authentic selves, and no one should ever feel like they have to go back into the closet and we need to make sure that every single senior citizen, every single older adult on Long Island is able to live their golden years with the highest quality of life. And, that’s what this project is going to achieve.” Construction is expected to begin in the late spring and a lottery for prospective residents will be announced in 2018.

Trump administration backs baker who refused to make cake for gay Supreme Court asked couple to consider anti-bias protections for gay workers (Reuters) – The Trump administration filed papers at the U.S. Supreme Court backing a Christian baker in Colorado whom a state court ruled against for declining to make a wedding cake for a gay couple. In the brief, Acting Solicitor General Jeff Wall said Jack Phillips should be exempt from Colorado’s anti-discrimination law because making custom cakes is a form of free expression protected under the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment. The high court agreed in June to hear Phillips’ appeal of the state court ruling that his refusal to make the cake violated the antidiscrimination law. Phillips contends the law violated his constitutional rights to freedom of speech and free exercise of religion. The legal fight broke out in 2012 when Phillips told gay couple David Mullins and Charlie Craig that because of his Christian beliefs, his store’s policy was to deny service to customers wanting to purchase cakes to celebrate a same-sex wedding.
(Reuters) – LGBT group Lambda Legal asked the U.S. Supreme Court to consider whether discrimination against gay workers is a form of unlawful sex bias, teeing up what could be a monumental case for the gay rights movement. The group filed a petition for certiorari on behalf of Jameka Evans, a former security guard at Georgia Regional Hospital who says she was harassed and forced to quit her job because she is gay. A threejudge panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in March dismissed her case, saying it was bound by existing precedent that held Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 does not offer protections to gay workers.
Publisher of High Times acquires LGBT publications (Reuters) – Capital, the Los Angeles-based investment firm that recently bought marijuana enthusiast magazine “High Times,” has funded a management buyout of a handful of media brands catering to the gay community. Oreva has backed a management-led buyout of Here Publishing, which owns such titles as “The Advocate” and “Out,” with plans to grow its online and events business, Oreva CEO Adam Levin told Reuters in an interview. Oreva is buying Here Publishing, which it is rebranding “Pride Media Inc,” at a time when many print publishers are struggling with declining subscribers and advertising revenue. “We are looking for brands that have strong emotional ties with a community,” he said. “We think there is a unique opportunity in niche media brands that are undervalued and have further ways to monetize the intellectual property. 6

Transgender members in U.S. military may serve until study completed: Mattis U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said current policy regarding transgender personnel serving in the military would remain in place until he advises President Donald Trump on how to implement his directive on a transgender ban. Mattis said in a statement he would set up a panel of experts serving in the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security to provide recommendations on implementing the ban. He said he would advise the president after the panel reports it recommendations, and “in the interim, current policy with respect to currently serving members will remain in place.” Trump signed a memorandum directing the U.S. military not to accept transgender men and women as recruits and halting the use of government funds for sex-reassignment surgeries for active personnel unless the process is already under way. Mattis said he expects to issue other guidance “including any necessary interim adjustments to procedures, to ensure the continued combat readiness of the force until our final policy on this subject is issued.” Trump’s directive created uncertainty for thousands of transgender service members, many of whom came out after the Pentagon said in 2016 it would allow transgender people to serve openly. The decision appealed to some in Trump’s conservative political base while drawing criticism from advocates of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights.

Two lawsuits challenge Trump transgender military service ban (Reuters) - Civil rights groups filed two new lawsuits challenging President Donald Trump’s controversial ban on transgender people serving in the U.S. military. The lawsuits, filed in federal courts in Seattle and Baltimore, say the ban issued on Friday violated U.S. constitutional guarantees of equal protection and due process. Trump had announced the ban in a series of tweets on July 26, reversing a policy of his predecessor, Barack Obama. On Aug. 9, five transgender service members filed a lawsuit in federal court in Washington D.C. asking a judge to block Trump from issuing a ban. “We do not comment on active or pending litigation,” a White House official said. A Defense Department spokesman echoed that position at a briefing with reporters. Trump’s move halted years of efforts to eliminate barriers to military service based on sexual orientation or gender identity, including a 2016 order by Obama designed to let transgender people serve without fear of discharge. In its lawsuit filed in Baltimore, the American Civil Liberties Union said Trump had replaced those evidence-based policies “with discredited myths and stereotypes, uninformed speculation, and animus against people who are transgender.” Courts typically afford the government broad deference on military matters, said Eugene Fidell, who teaches military law at Yale Law School. But in defending the ban, the Trump administration will face a challenge in explaining why it overturned the Obama-era policy, since it was backed by studies and testimony from military officials, he said. “The government will have its hands full defending the notion that this is bad for cohesion” among military units, Fidell said. The ACLU sued the administration on behalf of six transgender service members. LGBT groups Lambda Legal and OutServe-SLDN filed the second lawsuit in Seattle on behalf of an Army staff sergeant and two transgender people who wish to join the military. They are seeking to block the ban temporarily as the cases move forward. Trump in his order gave U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis six months to submit a plan for implementing the policy. For the ban to survive, the Trump administration must show that allowing transgender people to serve affects “our readiness, ability to fight, and lethality,” said Gregory Greiner, a Washington D.C. lawyer who represents service members. But that could be hard to prove since transgender people make up a small fraction of the military, he said, and there have been few reports that they have caused any disruptions. Pentagon spokesman Colonel Robert Manning added: “As directed, we will develop an implementation plan which will contain the steps that will promote military readiness, lethality and unit cohesion with due regard for budgetary constraints and consistent with the applicable law.”

Hate crimes against LGBT people in UK almost double in 4 years: survey LONDON (Reuters) - Hate crimes against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in Britain have almost doubled in the past four years, campaigners said, with one in five people targeted. A newly-released survey of 5,000 LGBT people by pollster YouGov found 16 percent of lesbian, gay and bisexual respondents reported experiencing hate crimes, such as abusive language, threats and violence, in the past year, up from 9 percent in 2013. Transgender people were not included in the 2013 poll. Gay rights group Stonewall described the trend as “alarming”, with these high levels of abuse leaving many people feeling unsafe in their daily lives and almost a third avoiding certain streets. Stonewall’s campaigns director Paul Twocock said four in five LGBT people who experienced a hate crime or incident didn’t report it to the police. “Although we’ve come a long way in creating legal equality for LGBT people, the reality just hasn’t caught up with that,” Twocock told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. “Things will only change if people everywhere, whether at work or on the streets, come out for LGBT people and take a stand against hate crimes.” Although Britain is one of a handful of countries where LGBT people have equal constitutional rights, abuse and discrimination against them remain rife, say activists.

Australian ad draws fire for linking gay marriage to boys in dresses Australia (Rueters) - An Australian campaign ad that claims same-sex marriage laws would lead to school children acting out gay relationships and boys wearing dresses in class drew widespread fire. The advert was aired by the Coalition for Marriage, a group that opposes equal marriage laws. It said that legalizing same-sex marriage would usher in education programs that rob parents of the right to choose how children learn about sexuality. The adverts - the first national televised campaign for the ‘No’ vote in a September referendum on same-sex marriage - misled viewers about what is at stake, according to Education Minister Simon Birmingham. “Look, there is only one question on the ballot paper, that question is: ‘Should same-sex marriage be allowed in Australia?,'” Birmingham told reporters. “It is patently ridiculous to suggest that allowing same-sex couples to marry is somehow going to see some new sway of teaching reform sweep across the country,” he said. Parliamentarians including opposition leader of the Labor party Bill Shorten and Liberal Party MP Tim Wilson have also condemned the adverts as inaccurate. Australia is one of the only developed English-speaking countries not to have legalized same-sex marriage, despite strong popular support and the backing of most lawmakers. Same-sex marriage is supported by 61 percent of Australians, a 2016 Gallup opinion poll showed.

Chile’s President Bachelet sends gay marriage bill to Congress SANTIAGO (Reuters) - Chilean President Michelle Bachelet sent Congress a bill that would legalize gay marriage, a move that follows a string of liberal reforms in one of Latin America’s most conservative nations. In 2015, Chile’s Congress approved same sex civil unions after years of legislative wrangling. In March, Bachelet, a center-left politician, pledged to send a full marriage bill to legislators before the end of the year. “We do this with the certainty that it is not ethical nor fair to put artificial limits on love, nor to deny essential rights just because of the sex of those who make up a couple,” Bachelet said in Chile’s La Moneda presidential palace. Just last week, a Chilean court gave the green light to a law passed in July that will allow abortion in limited cases. Before that, Chile was one of only a handful of countries in the world that outlawed terminating a pregnancy in any situation, including when a woman’s life was in danger. Bachelet’s push for marriage equality also comes as countries across the region are expanding gay rights. Same-sex marriage has been legalized in recent years in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Mexico, despite the powerful influence of the Catholic Church, which opposes such unions. It was not immediately clear if Bachelet will be able to push the gay marriage bill through Congress before she leaves office in March 2018. Though her Nueva Mayoria coalition has a congressional majority, it is severely fractured ahead of elections in November and several members of the coalition hold socially conservative views.

Sugar, Spice and
Everything Nice PATTI LABELLE DISHES ON ‘STILL STANDING’ THANKS TO THE LGBT COMMUNITY, LIP-SYNCING ‘DIVETTES’ AND TRUMP BY CHRIS AZZOPARDI
Is there a singer more real than Patti LaBelle? The 73-year-old legend of song (and shade) is a firehose of strong-minded opinions, and in an age that has some tight-lipped “divettes,” as LaBelle calls them, refraining from saying too much, the ever-honest LaBelle is, refreshingly, that rare freewheeler who revels in being blunt AF. In 2014, she told me she no longer considers herself a diva because “all these little heifers who can’t sing are called divas.” The word, she observed, is not “cute anymore.” Now, after our recent warm phone reunion while doing promo for her new jazz album, Bel Hommage, she who has given the gays so much, from music and pies to a bevy of side-eye-serving GIFs, still has more to give – even her own precious pie-making time. “I really like talking to you,” she tells me when I start to wrap the interview. My allotted time has long passed, but she’s not done. And by the end of our 25-minute interview we’ve covered generous ground: why she’s “still standing” thanks to the LGBT community, President “Trumpette” and his Twitter-proposed ban on transgender people in the military, her music-biz foes (and how Aretha Franklin is not one of them) and how you “may see me as a diva and that’s a compliment to those who think it’s a compliment.” Last time we had a gay press chat it was shortly before you had me twerkin’ on your stage here in Detroit. I still can’t believe you let me do that. What’s the craziest thing a gay fan has done on your stage? Gosh, I don’t really know! Maybe you! I know I’ve had a lot of gay men on my stage during “Lady Marmalade” and they go way out because once they’re up there they say, “I’m here with Ms. Patti’s microphone and I’m gonna wear it out.” I’ve had so many do so many things that I can’t tell you specifically one. 12

I don’t know if he was gay, but in Vancouver last year, a fan got frisky on your stage and... Showed me his ass? Is that what he did? Yeah! He mooned me! Because he came up and I was looking at him through the whole show and I said, “Oh, he’s an enthusiastic fan,” right? I try to look at the people that I’m gonna bring up, so I brought him up thinkin’ he was cool. He did his little shake and then turned around and pulled his pants down. I had on high pumps. I kicked that ass. You even called him a “bitch.” I did! I did use a curse word. And I felt so bad. He took me to that limit. I said, “How could he take me there?” And they had it on TMZ or whatever. I said, “It’s true.” Gotta protect myself. (Laughs) I was happy to see that you did NYC Pride this summer. Is there something special about performing for an all gay audience? That night it poured, so when Deborah Cox was on she did three songs and then had to be rushed off the stage. It could’ve been shut down ’cause it was so bad. Everybody got drenched. So instead of my going on at 9, I went on at about 10:15... and they were still there! My whole thing is, when I knew I was doing gay pride, I said, “I’m gonna wear something beautifully outrageous, and I’m gonna have that old Patti LaBelle hair that I used to do with the fans and all that jazz.” I said, “I’m gonna wear that hair!” And from the time I went on until the end, they never stopped yelling for more. I mean, when we were pulling out in our car, they were still, “More, more, more!”

They were so enthusiastic. But what I did: I wore that old hair, and a lot of people who didn’t know me from the ’80s – we got some bad press for it – and I said, “You know what, I did that for my queens. They understand it.” It was for you guys. But I enjoyed doing it. And then the wind knocked that sucker down. I said, “OK, I’m gonna have to kick it up.” (Laughs) Ha! Who would give Patti LaBelle crap for her hair? People who didn’t really understand where I was in the ’80s. You know, some of the younger kids – they don’t have a clue who Patti LaBelle or Labelle was. So what do they know you for? I have no clue. I’m thinking, “But that is part of your legacy.” Yeah, they’re Patti latecomers.
Nope, I didn’t. ’Cause you know what: That’s a big piece of work and I think Bette Midler can do it much better than Patti LaBelle. I thought about it after she did it. Might I do it in the future? You never know. Do you pay attention to the memes and GIFs of you throwing shade that people love to share on the internet? Yeah, I see them. And you know what, I’m honored! (Laughs) And whenever I see something that’s not totally positive about me, I say, “God, at least they thought about me.” It’s really the way to look at these situations. But at the end of the day I know who I really am… and that’s a cool chick! (Laughs) Has your son given up on keeping what you say in check? Well, he tries. Lately, he hasn’t had to because I’ve not been saying anything out of order. But I know he’s always waiting and when I do he’ll take me to the side: “Mom, could you not say that ever again?” I say, “OK.” Something happened about two weeks ago and I’m trying to remember what it was. This time it was about… god, what did I do? I’m always doin’ something and he’s always reprimanding me for it.
Speaking of Deborah Cox, a lot of people don’t know that Montell Jordan wrote “Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here,” but you didn’t love it and then it went to Deborah. Deborah always says I’m her reason for being in show business because I let the song go and she got it. That’s her start. After that, I started performing that song at my show and told the audience, “This is Do you ever regret things that you say? the song that got away.” But I’m happy it did My god, about 50 million things. I’m full of because I love her. regrets. But you know what, I’m honest. So it will come out and I’ll say, “God, I didn’t Have you given up a lot of songs that became mean to say that.” But it’s too late. And I’m hits? not gonna whoop myself up for it. I did it and Right?! Well, this is the first time for me. But I’ll do it again. I know I’ll do it! I do have my I’ll know the next time to hold onto something little cop son watching me, so I try to be nice. that sounds halfway decent. Three years ago you told me you don’t I read Hello, Dolly! came your way years call yourself a diva because “all these little ago, before it hit Broadway, but that you heifers who can’t sing are called divas.” passed on it. When the role ultimately went But then, after that interview, you did VH1’s to Bette Midler, were you kicking yourself for Divas Holiday: Unsilent Night last year and not jumping at the chance? then Daytime Divas this year. Now, Ms. Patti, I feel like you’re sending me mixed signals here. (Laughs) No – no, mixed signals! If I do Daytime Divas, which I did, and if I did Divas the concert, of course, I'm gonna be in it, but I’m not saying, “I’m a diva.” People look to me and may see me as a diva and that’s a compliment to those who think it’s a compliment. Like I said, Lena Horne and Dinah Washington and all those beautiful dolls back in the day, they were divas. These little divettes walking around – I don’t wanna put myself in the same sentence with some of these little kids. So, I’m not a diva; just a singin’ fool.

People are under the impression there’s rivalry between you and Aretha Franklin, but you recently quashed that rumor when you said, of anyone, you’d most want to duet with her. Why do people think you had a beef? And what’s the deal with women constantly being pitted against each other? I’m not gonna be pitted against any lady in this industry. I do my job, I sing hard and I sing well, and I love what I do. If another lady finds that as being too much for them, or whoever might feel I’m being too much, that’s their problem. But I’ve never had beef. Now, there are a lot of ladies in this industry who don’t care for Patti LaBelle – and some gentleman, also – but I look at them and I smile. Because what can I do? I can’t change your mind, boo, because I don’t wanna change your mind. You go on thinkin’ about me the way you think. No – but I haven’t had beef with anyone. I’ve had a lot of dislikes. But I pay no mind. I keep moving and I don’t stop to talk about the ones who talk about me.
"
I just want all of my gay fans to know that I will always be here for them the way I am: honest, to the point, and loving my gay fans even more and more each day.

Let’s talk about food. You know how people say gays don’t eat carbs? Gays don’t eat carbs – who said that?! Every gay guy I know, they eat carbs. (Laughs) And they eat your pies? They eat my pies, honey! And my peach cobbler. You have to go to Walmart, or I’ll have to come and make you one personally. One more thing about food: I start taping my cooking show soon and Laverne Cox is one of my cooking buddies. Regarding Bel Hommage: If there’s ever an album that pays homage to you the way you pay homage to artists such as Nina Simone and Frank Sinatra on this album, who would get your blessing to cover your songs? Oh, I would give Fantasia blessings. And Ledisi. The little singing girls. The ones who can really, really sing. LIVING OUT

What does it mean to you to be able to “really, really sing”? Someone who can sing without someone in the studio tweaking what they just sang because it was so flat or whatever. Sing straight out in the studio, record without all those little gimmicks. Some of them are lucky because they end up selling a lot of music, but a singer is a person who goes out there and throws down. Just get on a microphone and sing. Phyllis Hyman was that girl.
Why did you want to perform that song at NYC Pride? Because there are so many gay men who were there who might be going through something with life. You’re in the land of the living, so act like you’re living. I just know what gay men go through and I wanted to put that song in the air, but I will. There couldn’t be a more perfect time. There is so much happening in the world. Maybe you heard, but President Donald Trump said trans people are no longer able to serve in the military. I know! My friend told me. They’re banned from service, according to the Trumpette. Ain’t that a witch.
Would you still regard a “singer” as someone who can throw down in the studio but lipsyncs live? Oh, a lot of them lip-sync. But they lip-sync and they do it so well you can’t tell that they’re doing it. But I can always tell. I can always tell. I’ve never done that. Do you think about your legacy, Patti? I just want to be honest and truthful, and What gives them away? I want people knowing that when I did Their mouths sometimes miss the movement! whatever I did, it was all the way. Never (Laughs) Your mouth should be making a half percent, always 100 percent. Onecertain movement when you sing a certain hundred percent in everything: my cooking, note, and they miss sometimes. But that’s my dressing, everything. If I can’t go all the what they do for a living. I don’t do that. way, I won’t go halfway. I have to go all the way. And just how honest I am – they can So we’ve got Fantasia – who else is on this remember that. The more honest I am, the covers album? better I get by, the more things come to my Ledisi, Andra Day, Emeli Sandé and Leela plate. Everybody knows that if you give Patti James – my god, that girl can sing. I love something, it’s gonna be quality. That’s just these ladies. how I work.
Any last words for your gay fans? I just want all of my gay fans to know that I will always be here for them the way I am: honest, to the point, and loving my gay fans even more and more each day. I mean, when I think about it, the gay fans are some of the reason – one big reason – I’m still standing, ’cause they loved me when other people tried not to. Everybody always says, “What makes gay men like you?” “I have no clue,” I say. I still don’t. But I know that love has lifted me up for many, many years. As long as I can stand on stage and my gay men and lesbian women see Patti LaBelle as someone who’s always been honest on stage – you know, I’ll stop and have to go to the bathroom and I’ll let them know I’ll be right back. A lot of cutie girls stand up there and they pretend for the hour or however how long and that’s just gross. It turns me off. They pretend like they wanna be there? Yes! And everything you see of them is gonna be mechanical. Gladys Knight – she’s a raw girl. And whenever you see Gladys, you’re gonna see a different Gladys. If you just saw her show five nights in a row, she will not do everything the same. You just want something real. It has to stay that way.
Why have you never duetted in the studio with your goddaughter, Mariah Carey? I don’t know. We always talk about it when we see each other. Maybe you two can hook up for a song on your dance album, which I believe is in the works. Hopefully we don’t have to wait as long as we waited for this jazz album. Right?! Not 10 years, that’s for sure. I have not started working on it. I’m working on a Christmas album at the moment and old R&B favorites of mine from back in the day. And that… the uptempo music, I call it (laughs)... that will be done as soon as I do something with these other two projects, but it’s definitely in the mix. Will it be for the gay clubs? Oh yeah, for the gay clubs. You know what, I was so angry with myself when I did NYC Pride. There was a song that I recorded many, many years ago called “Land of the Living.” I meant to do that that particular night and we didn’t have time to rehearse it, but I’m gonna put stuff like that back in my show.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF BEACH BOYS Unappealing title aside, writer/director Eliza Hittman’s Beach Rats (Neon) is one of the most captivating and sensitive portraits of sexual confusion you are likely to see anytime soon. And that’s saying a lot in the age of Moonlight. Aimless teen Frankie (the scorching British actor Harris Dickinson) has various ways he likes to waste time in the summer, including getting wasted on pilfered prescription meds and pot with his equally adrift posse Nick (Frank Hakaj), Nick (David Ivanov) and Jesse (Anton Selyaninov). Frankie also likes taking seductive shirtless selfies and cruising online gay sex sites such as Brooklyn Boys. Not surprisingly, in terms of sexual attraction, Frankie “doesn’t know” what he “likes”. At least that’s what he tells the men he encounters while he’s cruising the web. Some he meets for hookups in parks, cars and motel rooms. Frankie’s also the kind of conscientious sexual partner who manscapes and is aware of personal hygiene.
Eventually he finds a way to make things works with Simone in order to maintain his cover. However, that doesn’t stop him from cruising the gay sex sites. When an online hookup agrees to provide weed, Frankie unwisely includes his buddies in the encounter, and as you can imagine, things go south quickly.
There’s more to Frankie than meets the eye. He’s well-spoken and thoughtful. He tries to be a good son to mother Donna (Kate Hodge) and his father dying of cancer in a hospital bed in the living room, as well as a concerned older brother to sister Carla (Nicole Flyus). Hittman’s camera loves Frankie’s body and rightfully so. Not your run-of-the-mill coming out story by any stretch of the imagination, Beach Rats provides no easy answers or resolution. Still, it’s a welcome addition to growing canon of queer cinema. Rating: B+
Frankie doesn’t think of himself as gay but he has sex with men. As he tells one trick who’s closer to his age than the others, he likes older men because that decreases the chances of them knowing anyone he knows. As if to prove he’s one of the guys, Frankie agrees to go out with the aggressive Simone (Madeline Weinstein), whom he meets on the Coney Island Boardwalk. Their first sexual encounter falls flat, which Frankie blames on the combination of drugs coursing through his system. But the truth is, he has no problem getting aroused with guys.

Meeting My Brother The heartwarming story of donor siblings meeting and becoming family. Jennifer L. Dukoff is a homegrown Long Islander who recently authored the children’s “Meeting My Brother”. “Meeting My Brother” is a heartwarming story of donor siblings meeting and becoming family. This book is the first of its kind, and shows the great love and connection that donor siblings have. It tells the story of a little girl named Hazel who meets her brother Ravi. The story accounts how they meet and share experiences together, as children do, and how they bond and form a connection, for life. When asked why she wrote the book Jennifer responded “ I wrote this book because there was a great need for it in our community. There were books out there for young children who were adopted or had disabilities, or has two mom’s or two dads, but there was no book for donor siblings to explain to them how it was it they were family in a heartwarming, simplistic, age appropriate way. I wrote this book because of my own experience with my daughter and her brother which has truly been amazing. Hannah and her brother Radar are almost 9 years old and have been family since they were two and a half. During that time as moms of these donor siblings, we went from sitting the kids on our laps holding their hands and waving to one another, to the children now having their own relationship separate from us the grown-ups. They call one another on Skype and play Roblox together. They think of one another often, and send Christmas presents and birthday presents. We see them as often as we can and when we do it feels like yesterday. I could not have asked for anything more magical.” Hannah and Radar have a sister Gracie who lives in Australia with her 2 Moms. Jennifer and Hannah hope to one day meet them but in the meantime, the kids Skype and send special packages. We all feel grateful to have found one another.” When asked what she hopes to accomplish with this book she answered “ in writing this book I hoped to create a story that help children feel comfortable and acknowledge their relationship as donor siblings as their normal. It’s fun, it’s sweet, it’s light, and shows the joy that the children have as family. I want children and parents who read this book to them to feel the same as we do. The relationships that they have with their siblings are special regardless of whether they live with one another. After all, Family Is Everything! My hope is that when friends and families read this book it helps bridge the gap in the assumption that brothers and sisters have to live with one another. I hope it helps them to understand that there are families of all kinds and validate that.” “Meeting My Brother” is listed on the international websites for The Donor Sibling Registry, The Family Equality Council Book Nook Elementary Section and Jennifer was recently an in studio guest on August 8th on the Derek & Romaine LGBT Radio Show. On July 9th Jennifer had a book signing event with her Illustrator Charles Berton at The Book Revue in Huntington.
“Meeting My Brother” is available on Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com. You can also find “Meeting My Brother” on Facebook at: facebook.com/MeetingMyBrother And on Twitter at: twitter.com/JenniferDukoff

Autumn 2017 tea dance playlist give listeners an idea of what Daft Punk and Air might have sounded like if they were from L.A. and not France, on its debut album Full Circle (Interscope). Additionally, influences that include acts from the original Casablanca Records roster and Tom Tom Club go a long way in broadening Oliver’s appeal. Arcade Fire has been encouraging An impressive array of guest artists us to dance since its first full-length including gay singer Sam Sparro album, 2004’s Funeral. But it wasn’t (“Last Forever”), De La Soul (“Heart until 2013 Reflektor that the band Attack”), MNDR (“Chemicals”), fully embraced its inner dance Elohim (“Wherever We Are”), diva. Everything Now (Columbia) Leon Else (“Love Like This”), continues in a similar vein, Chromeo (“Go With It”) and Yelle beginning with the title cut. However, (“Heterotopia”) contribute to making it’s best not to be deceived by the Full Circle a well-rounded release. exuberant beats and synths, as the song is really about out of control consumerism. In fact, the album is full of messages set to irresistible beats, including “Signs of Life”, “Creature Comfort”, and “Electric Blue”. Sure, Everything Now lacks the impact of 2007’s The Neon Bible or 2010’s Grammy-winning The Suburbs, but that doesn’t mean that Arcade Fire has run out of steam. The members of Vampire Weekend have been busy with solo projects since the band’s 2013 album Modern Vampires of the City. Bass player Chris Baio, for instance, has just released Man of the World (Glassnote) under the moniker Baio. Described as a “creative duo”, DJ/ An ear-pleasing pastiche of eighties production pair Oliver (Vaughn synth pop with plenty of beats for Oliver and Oliver “Oligee” Goldstein) your feet, especially on the title 22

cut, “Out of Tune”, “Philosophy!”, “Sensitive Guy” and “Shame In My Name”. Baio also tips his hat to VW on “The Key Is Under The Mat” and “I’m Not Curious”.
The soaring double-disc set Take Flight (I Am Me/BMG) by UK musician and DJ Maya Jane Coles can be enjoyed whether you’re jacking up your heart rate on your feet or bobbing your head from the comfort of your seat. Coles firmly embraces the repetitive house music esthetic to lift listeners to the next level and beyond. This is best exemplified on “Won’t Let You Down”, “Werk”, “Go On and Make It Through”, “A Chemical Affair”, “Keep Me War”, “Stay” and “Lucky Charm”.
Echo Papa (airtrafficcontrollermusic. com) by Air Traffic Controller may only be seven songs long, but the band makes a strong impression in a short amount of time. “Keeping Bees”, for example, is like a pot of honey and worth the sting. “After Party” will have some scrambling for an invitation and “Doubt” undoubtedly has a dance-worthy beat.

Arcade Fire performs on 9/12 in NYC at Madison Square Garden. Oliver performs on 9/28 at Good Room in NYC. Baio performs on 11/1 at Mercury Lounge in NYC and on 11/3 at Kings Theatre in Brooklyn. For someone whose bread and butter is high energy dance music, Calvin Harris takes an unusual detour with the laid-back beats on Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 (Columbia). With the emphasis on bounce and a distinctive lean towards vintage vibe, Harris enlists gay hip-hop star Frank Ocean and Migos (“Slide”), Ariana Grande, Pharrell William and Young Thug (“Heatstroke”), Katy Perry, Pharrell and Big Sean (“Feels”), Future and Khalid (“Rollin’”), Snoop Dogg and John Legend (“Holiday”), Nikki Minaj (“Skrt on Me”) for a set of sunny tunes.
A long time ago, in the `80s, if you were a band and you dressed a certain way or if your album cover artwork had a specific look, chances are that the listener was assured that your music would sound a particular way. How things have changed!
The Outside (Capitol/Hi or Hey/ Caroline) by Hey Violet. The Vamps are essentially a boy band with a stripper-pole music streak, not a retro new wave act as the cover art might suggest. To be fair, “Shades On” is a catchy, clubby number. The rest is sludgy and fake, regardless of a handful of guest artists. At least One Direction’s album covers weren’t this misleading. As for poseurs Hey Violet, they deserve a little more credit for making memorable dance music on “Brand New Moves” and “All We
Ever Wanted”. They also get points for pretending to be punkish on songs such as “Fuqboi”, “Guys My Age” and “This Is Me Breaking Up With You”.

Q-music
by gregg shapiro
Dance Like You’re Straight Let’s face it queer folks, dance music was never our exclusive domain. Attend an electronic dance music festival or concert and you’re likely to see as many straight people as you’d see at the Vans Warped Tour. Our straight brothers and sisters are not only dancing to it in growing numbers, they’re making it, as well. You probably never imagined you’d be dancing to a Flaming Lips song, but you’d be wrong. Moving in a decidedly and daring electro direction on Oczy Mlody (Warner Brothers), The Flaming Lips blow a sizzling kiss towards the dance-floor. Partially the outcome of collaborating with Miley Cyrus (yes, her), who can be heard here on “We A Family”, these 12 songs move the band’s brand of psychedelic music into the 21st century and beyond. Even without a remixer’s pawprints on them, “Do Glowy” and “One Night While Hunting For Fairies and Witches and Wizards to Kill” are inviting dance tracks. Mostly glitchy and hazy, Oczy Mlody redefines the chill-out vibe and redefines everything you thought you knew about this always compelling band. Electronic music trio Future Islands ramps up the dance grooves heard on 2014’s brilliant Singles on the equally exhilarating The Far Fields (4AD). The dance beats are tantalizing and the melodies are alluring, but Future Islands’ secret weapon is front-man Samuel T. Herring. No one else sounds quite like him or moves like him. His soulful and emotive vocals take every song to an entirely different level. Opener “Aladdin” is sure to rub dancers the right way. There is also a conscious variety to the throbbing dance beats and funky bass lines, exemplified by “Time On Her Side”, “Ran”, “North Star” and “Black Rose”. The radiant duet with Debbie Harry on “Shadows” is the proverbial cherry on top. Neko Case, of The New Pornographers, should be a dance diva, worshipped and adored by gay men around the globe. On Whiteout Conditions (Collected Works/ Concord), she gets her chance. A Canadian band better known for its wonderful melding of classic and modern pop styles, The New Pornographers take a delightful detour with the 21st century new wave update heard on this album. Most of the 11 thought-provoking songs, written by A.C. Newman, are driven by a combination of propulsive beats and synthetic keys. Songs including the title cut, “Play Money”, “High Ticket Attractions”, “Avalanche Alley”, “Juke” and “Clockwise”, featuring Case, who solos and shares vocal duties, will come through as well at a dance club as they do on listeners’ home sound systems. 24

Grouplove performs on October 23 at Barclays Center.
It doesn’t have to be salsa night at your favorite hangout for you to find a reason to dance to the songs on Tastes Like L.A. (lascafeteras.com) by Las Cafeteras. This mixed gender East L.A. band whose “party with a purpose” mission gives you something to think about in songs such as “If I Was President”, “Vamos to the Beach”, “Two More Days”, “Señor Presidente” and its rendition of “This Land Is Your Land”, while you dance. However, if your taste in dance music leans (or slams) more towards surf or garage rock, consider youthful punk band The Regrettes. Fueled by raw and riveting female energy – the band is made up of three women and one guy – The Regrettes’ debut album Feel Your Feelings Fool! (Warner Brothers) doesn’t mince words. Covering subjects to which people of all ages can relate, The Regrettes sing about social, sexual and personal issues on songs such as “A Living Human Girl”, “I Don’t Like You”, “Hey Now”, “Juicebox Baby”, “Hot” and “Ladylike/Whatta Bitch”. On their respective previous albums, Grouplove and Coin gave us the impression that they had an affinity for dance music. However, on their new releases, it seems as if both bands are attempting to distance themselves from the dance floor. “Welcome To Your Life”, the opening cut on Grouplove’s Big Mess (Canvasback/ Atlantic) is more arena than club. You can dance to “Do You Love Someone” but it rocks enough to appeal to the fist-thrusters in the crowd. “Good Morning” is the one song sure to go directly to people’s hips, while the suggestive “Don’t Stop Making It Happen” has its funky charms. Here’s the biggest problem with Coin’s How Will You Know If You Never Try (Star Time/ Columbia) – aside from the dreadful cover art and title – it sounds too generic. There’s nothing especially distinctive about any of the songs, most of which were written by committee (the four band members and sundry others). In the interest of finding something nice to say, “Are We Alone?” and “Miranda Beach” aren’t bad.
