Alabama school districts ordered to overlook presidential directive Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange is encouraging all schools in Alabama to ignore an order from President Obama. That order instructs every school district in the nation to allow transgender students to use the bathroom of the gender they identify with. Georgia, Tennessee, and Lousisiana are just a few of 11 states taking part in the transgender bathroom lawsuit.

Texas teen sent home for wearing pro-LGBT t-shirt The shirt told the haters to ‘Get Over It.’ Yes, students get sent home all the time for wearing controversial t-shirts but is there really anything offensive about a shirt that reads, “Some People Are Gay, Get Over It.” 13-year-old Ali Chaney was sent home from her grade school in Copperas Cove, Texas, for wearing such a shirt because the school prohibits “clothing that is disruptive to the learning environment based on reactions by other students is prohibited.”

KKK tries to exploit transgender bathroom hysteria to scare up new members in Alabama Activists hoping to keep transgender people out of bathrooms just got a new ally: the Ku Klux Klan. An Alabama neighborhood received fliers speaking out in support of laws like the one passed in North Carolina, that confine bathrooms to gender assignment at birth. They also begged for new recruits and solicit donations. “It appears to be against transgender and transgender bathrooms and it was basically a recruitment flier,” Capt. Will Benny explained to the Dothan Eagle.

New Nike Release Pays Homage to LGBT Pride MontH Nike is set to release a new Air Max Zero design aimed at LGBT consumers to celebrate Pride month. The shoes aren’t your usual color splashed be-rainbowed sneakers, instead they simply give a small nod to LGBT pride with a small insert in the sole and color on the heel and inside the shoe.

SACRAMENTO — California Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill that allows organ transplants between HIV-positive donors and HIV-positive recipients

“These lifesaving surgeries have been proven safe and are now allowable under federal law,” said Allen. “There is no reason for state law to maintain an antiquated prohibition on organ donation by HIV-positive persons. By expanding the pool of organ donors, we will have shortened the time for all persons on the organ donor waiting lists, and saved lives in the process.”

ICE immigration officials are opening a new detention facility in Texas that will include a unit specifically created for transgender individuals, according to a report in Fusuin.

SB 1408 is a first step towards modernizing a number of California laws that stigmatize people living with HIV by treating HIV differently than other communicable diseases.

Hate Crime Prompts Rainbow Resistance Chicago authorities are investigating a hate crime inside the North Side Hamburger Mary’s restaurant, where a vandal spray-painted “Die Fags” on a door. Wright painted over the graffiti with rainbow colors and the word “Love,” to send a message to the vandal and his customers. “I’m just going to have fun with this and make this kind of a testament to - a shrine if you will - to acceptance and diversity,” said Wright.

Former ‘ex-gay Yale’s gender-neutral Georgia ACLU Director therapy’ guru says bathrooms part of Resigns Over Support of his former industry changing climate Transgender Rights is ‘gasping for air’ The former leader of one of the most prominent groups to promote therapies that “cure” people of homosexuality said he hopes “every ministry focused on changing orientation will close”, in a report released on Wednesday. Alan Manning Chambers, former president of Exodus International, has previously denounced his group’s work, and told the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) the exgay movement is “gasping for air”. 6

Visitors at Yale University’s 315th commencement will notice something new on campus this year — gender-neutral bathrooms in 23 buildings. The school is promoting them on its website for Monday’s commencement, complete with a link to a map showing where they can be found. It is one of several changes made in the past school year designed to make the university friendlier to transgender students, staff and visitors, school officials said. Yale also has decided to change a long-standing rule and will allow transgender graduates to have on their diploma the name they use, rather than the name on their birth certificates.

“The facility is expected to house about 700 detainees, including a separate 36bed unit for transgender individuals,” said Carl Rusnok, a spokesperson for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE.)

(APN) ATLANTA — Maya Dillard Smith, Interim Director of the Georgia chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), says she has left the organization due to a disagreement she had over its participation in recent litigation over the use of public restrooms by transgender persons. In a statement she accused the ACLU of being “a special interest organization that promotes not all, but certain progressive rights. In that way, it is a special interest organization not unlike the conservative right, which creates a hierarchy of rights based on who is funding the organization’s lobbying activities.” “My children were visibly frightened, concerned about their safety and left asking lots of questions for which I, like many parents, was ill-prepared to answer,” she said.

Vermont bans antigay “conversion therapy” The state of Vermont became the fifth state to ban the use of so-called “conversion therapy,” a practice aimed at changing young people’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Gov. Peter Shumlin signed the bill into law Wednesday, saying Vermont will continue to stand up to hatred and bigotry.

Chinese transgender man fights for job equality BEIJING (AP) — A 28-year-old transgender man who goes by the name of “Mr. C” has become the public face of the fight for job equality in China, where sexual and gender minorities are only beginning to emerge from virtual invisibility. The man, who keeps his real name secret to protect his parents’ privacy, is fighting his dismissal from a medical testing center in court and is seeking a ruling stating that no one should be discriminated against on the basis of gender identity or sexual orientation. “On my shoulders I am carrying the hopes of many, many people,” said Mr. C, who’s been both praised and insulted since filing the country’s first suit against transgender job discrimination earlier this year.

Conservatives in Canada Vote to End Opposition to Same-Sex Marriage – a Decade After It Became Law The Conservative Party of Canada, better known as the Tories, on Saturday voted to remove official opposition to marriage equality from its party platform. Same-sex marriage has been legal for Canada's 36 million citizens for over a decade, since 2005. "The Conservative party is the party of rights for all Canadians," claimed Calgary MP Michelle Rempel, shown in the tweet below on the right. "It is long past time that we passed this resolution," she told about 1500 delegates at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

Australian Christian Lobby likens gay marriage and Safe Schools to 'unthinkable' Nazi atrocities The Australian Christian Lobby has compared same-sex marriage and the Safe Schools program to the Holocaust, dubbing them all "unthinkable things" that happened because societies lacked strong moral guardians. “Whatever the case, we have much to learn from the dead.” In a blog post, ACL director Lyle Shelton invoked the rise of Nazi Germany before arguing that Labor leader Bill Shorten's support for Safe Schools reflected "a failure of those of us who know better".

OUT AND ABOUT

INTERVIEW

by gregg shapiro

Sing Out, Sister: an

interview with Margaret Cho Fanny Brice wasn’t the only funny lady who could carry a tune. Margaret Cho did a good job of establishing herself as a singer and songwriting collaborator on her 2010 debut music album Cho Dependent. One of the busiest women in show business, between her stand-up comedy shows, Showtime specials, co-hosting duties on Fashion Police and her activism for queer, women’s and animal rights and causes, Cho has found the time to write and record her follow-up album American Myth (Clownery Records). Due out on April 29, Cho recorded the album with her band The Dog Children, and co-wrote most of the songs with out singer/songwriter Garrison Starr. She describes it as “a glamorous and glittering tribute to family, comedy, anger, fame, gayness, grief, fat pride, love and hate.” I spoke with Margaret about the album and more in early 2016. Gregg Shapiro: Margaret, I had the pleasure of attending your concert in Miami in the fall of 2015, and the thing that struck me when you sang during the show’s finale is how increasingly strong your singing voice has become. You were belting! Margaret Cho: Why thank you! GS: Are you taking voice lessons and who is your voice teacher? MC: I had been taking various lessons. I’ve also had a lot of incredible singers give me a ton of great advice. From Cyndi Lauper, who kind of taught me the basics, and I’ve also worked with Bird. She’s a tremendous coach and she often coaches the contestants on American Idol. I’ve had a great amount of support. I’ve worked with incredible producers who have also taken my voice and brought it to another level. I think I have some natural abilities, but it’s the technique that I’ve been learning from the best that keeps me going. I’m really honored to do it. GS: When I interviewed Lea DeLaria at the time of the release of her first jazz vocal album, it seemed to me that singing was something she had wanted to do all along and that the other things she did as a performer all led up to this moment. Would it be fair to say that being a singer is something that you have always wanted to be? 10

LIVING OUT

MC: Oh, always. But then, again, I’m very much a stand-up comedian in my heart. That’s really what I do. Now I’m trying to incorporate all of the different elements of my work as a performer, and use it as a stand-up comedian. GS: You are calling your new album American Myth. Please say something about the title. MC: It comes from one of the lyrics to the song “Anna Nicole.” It’s a song about Anna Nicole Smith. It’s the archetype of the tragic beauty who is too good for this world. It’s an American myth in the same way we mythologize Marilyn Monroe or James Dean. It’s an archetype we see over and over in film and on TV. That’s what I was referring to and what the song is about. It’s my version of “Candle In the Wind” for Anna Nicole. GS: I’m so glad that you mentioned the song “Anna Nicole,” which you co-wrote with Garrison Starr. Why was now the time to do this loving tribute to Anna Nicole? MC: I actually wrote the song with Garrison in 2010. We just hadn’t released it. It seemed too soon. You want to have some time to think about her. The world has changed. I think it’s the right time to look at her as kind of a frontrunner in reality television. She was Kim Kardashian before Kim Kardashian [laughs] was Kim Kardashian. Of course, Kim Kardashian is a

kind of archetype. But she owns her beauty and is tremendously successful. There’s no tragedy, there’s no drug story. There’s just her and her fame and her beauty. But Anna Nicole created that template of somebody that you’d want to watch on reality TV. Somebody that you’d want to invite into your home or as a role model, in terms of beauty and lifestyle and glamour. GS: As someone who spends a lot of time on tour, have you had the chance to try out all of the songs on the new album in front of a live audience? MC: Yes, I have tried a few of them. A couple of the songs are a staple in my stand-up comedy. I usually end my shows with songs. GS: How has the reaction been? MC: The reaction has been tremendous! Especially to a song called “Kill My Rapist.” I think it’s an important song. It’s not about violence. It’s about a cathartic release. To let go of the anger that survivors often feel (because) they are silenced and not allowed to express it. There’s a great catharsis that happens in the audience. They’ve watched this comedy show, they’ve laughed and laughed, and now let’s take it to something that is serious, but at the same time there’s a dark humor running through it. It’s a good way to bring what I do as a musician into what I do as a comedian.

GS: I’m glad you mentioned “Kill My Rapist” because it made me think of Tori Amos’s song “Me and A Gun” and the way that opened up the conversation about rape, and made people aware of the organization RAINN (Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network). Do you feel like you are reigniting that torch of conversation? MC: I hope so. I love that song and I love Tori Amos. RAINN is a really important organization and it’s still going strong. I think rock and roll can bring a lot of healing. This year we’ve also seen, “Til It Happens To You,” the wonderful Lady Gaga and Diane Warren song (from The Hunting Ground doc), we’re seeing more of this and people talking about their experiences. It could also be an effect of Bill Cosby and all of his victims coming forward. We’re living in an era of important truth and feminism and women standing up for themselves. This is a good sign. GS: Did you collaborate with any of the same songwriters that you worked with on your previous music album Cho Dependent? MC: No. Most of what was just written by me and Garrison. I also wrote a little bit with Roger Rocha, who is wonderful as well. I had fewer collabs on this one because I wanted to settle down and focus on my own songwriting. I also wanted collab with Garrison who is someone I

will always work with. GS: There is a long tradition of comedic songwriters, including Ruth Wallis, Shel Silverstein, Tom Lehrer, Allan Sherman and Steve Martin. Do you have a favorite comedic songwriter and which comedic songwriters do you look to for inspiration? MC: I think I look a lot to Morrissey. I think Morrissey is pretty funny. Of course, Bob Dylan and Patty Griffin; Patty’s not comedic but there are elements where she goes for lightness. There’s “Heavenly Day,” which is a love song for her dog. It’s so beautiful. I love Jill Sobule, another tremendous singer/songwriter who incorporates a lot of humor. There is also the amazing Flight of the Conchords who are very funny. They’re more in the vein of Weird Al Yankovic, who is the ultimate! GS: Leslie Jordan is featured in the video for “Ron’s Got a DUI,” also cowritten with Garrison. What was it like working with Leslie on the video? MC: Oh, I love Leslie! He’s a sparkling star. There’s so much effervescence and so much joy in everything he does. I really love bringing his energy to a really nice fairy tale; this great relationship and one that I had when I was much younger. As a child, I had a lot of older gay men taking care of me. There’s a trust there. I feel like little girls and old gay men together – there’s a safety. They make a shield from all of the bad things they’ve experienced

in the world. They make a home together. There are no songs about that. I don’t know if you remember, but there was a show a long time ago called Love, Sidney. GS: Yes, with Tony Randall. MC: Right. Originally, they didn’t state it in the show, but it was about an older gay man with a kind of surrogate family. That’s the only time I remember seeing something like that. Unfortunately, I’m of the era where a lot of the men I was around when I grew up died of AIDS. At the end of the video, there’s a regulation size panel (that I am making) that I’m going to sew on to the AIDS Quilt. It’s a great tribute and something that I think tends to get forgotten. Society moves so fast now, but we need to look back at important things like the AIDS Quilt. We have to remember that there is a whole generation of men we’ve lost and to remember to honor them. GS: I wouldn’t ordinarily watch Wife Swap, but when I saw that you were going to be on it, I couldn’t resist. On the whole, what was that experience like for you? MC: It was great! I love Holly Robinson Peete. I love her family. We had the best time. Her husband is fantastic. Her kids are beautiful. I really enjoyed being in that environment. I’m not often around that kind of family. I’m not around kids. I’m not around straight men [laughs]. I had a very nice time. GS: Your television presence has also increased with your recurring appearances on Fashion Police. How do you like being a part of the Fashion Police team? MC: I love it! I’ve become very close to all of the co-hosts. I love Brad, I love Giuliana, I love Nene, and I’m especially tight with Melissa. I’ve known her for a very long time. She’s my sister. Consistently what we do is try to honor Joan Rivers’ memory. We try to do her justice. Fashion Police was Joan’s favorite thing. It was her most prized accomplishment. She really enjoyed it. What we try to do is bring it up back to her level. There’s no way you could ever replace Joan Rivers, but we can at least try to have fun and make her proud.

2016 Entertainment 10,000 Maniacs “Because the Night”

Founded in the fall of 1981 in Jamestown, NY, 10,000 Maniacs has won the hearts and ears of music fans around the world selling over10 million records. Together with artists like R.E.M. and The Replacements, they helped define “college rock” and the first wave of “alternative rock” bands with their popconscious, literate and lush aesthetic. The band's 2015 release Twice Told Tales (Cleopatra Records) is a full-length collection of traditional British Isles folk songs. Led by Mary Ramsey’s graceful vocal style and her soaring interplay on viola with guitarist Jeff Erickson and anchored by the powerful rhythm section of Jerome Augustyniak, Dennis Drew and Steven Gustafson, Twice Told Tales is reminiscent of legendary 70’s folk rock pioneers Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span. It runs the gamut of British Isle folk styles from instrumental fiddle tunes to lush ballads and hard driving electric guitar anthems. Elmore Magazine said, ““The performances are so unfailingly lovely that it’s all but impossible not to get swept up…by any measure Twice Told Tales qualifies as a Maniacs’ masterpiece” while The Buffalo News raved "Twice Told Tales is an album dedicated to the interpretation of traditional British Folk Songs, all of them granted the immaculate jangle and gorgeous vocal/musical arrangements that have informed every Maniacs effort for the last 30 years” 10,000 Maniacs is gearing up for a May release of Playing Favorites, a stellar collection of live renditions of their greatest hits including: "These Are Days," "Because The Night," "Hey Jack Kerouac," "Trouble Me," "What's The Matter Here," "Like The Weather" and more.

Black Box “Strike It Up”

Black Box was an Italian house music group popular in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The members of the group included a trio made up of a club DJ (Daniele Davoli), a classically trained clarinet teacher (Valerio Semplici), and a keyboard and electronic music "wiz" (Mirko Limoni). The three created an image for the Black Box act using French fashion model Katrin Quinol as its album/singles cover art and supposed lead singer in all of the group's music videos. In America, they are best remembered for their early '90s singles, "Everybody Everybody", "I Don't Know Anybody Else", and "Strike It Up", their biggest hit in the United States, where all three of their hits are still heard on rhythmic radio and in clubs on a fairly regular basis to this day. Black Box remain one of the few piano-house groups to achieve mainstream success in the USA.

"Right Back Where We Started From"

Maxine Nightingale is a British R&B and soul music singer. She is best known for her hits in the 1970s, with the million seller "Right Back Where We Started From" (1975, U.K. & 1976, U.S.), "Love Hit Me" (1977), and "Lead Me On" (1979). "Right Back Where We Started From" reached #8 in the UK in the autumn of 1975. It was released in the US early 1976 to enthusiastic reaction, reaching #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 1976. Nightingale, who had accompanied her husband to his native Japan, was motivated by her single's US success to return to London to complete a Right Back Where We Started From album. She then proceeded to the US, which has since remained her home base.

France Joli “Come To Me”

France Joli is a Canadian singer, best known for the disco classic "Come to Me." "Come to Me" began a three-week reign atop the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play on 22 September 1979 and the France Joli album rose to #26. On the Billboard Hot 100 "Come to Me" peaked at #15 a symptom of the increasing disenchantment of pop radio with disco music. LIVING OUT

OUT AND ABOUT

Q-music

by gregg shapiro

NEW WAVY New wave music and the acts associated with the genre have managed to hang tough over the years since the musical style reached its peak in the mid-1980s and then was revived again in the late 20th/ early 21st centuries. Gary Numan, one of the forebears, especially in terms of synthesizer use, even experienced a bit of a career resurgence when he toured with Nine Inch Nails a couple of years ago. More recently, Numan’s recordings have become the subject of a vinyl reissue campaign via Beggars Banquet’s catalog and archive department known as The Arkive. The Pleasure Principle (Beggars Banquet) from 1979, for example, “mastered from HD digital 96/24 transfers of analogue tape,” contains Numan’s massive hits single “Cars,” as well as classic tunes including “Observer,” “Conversation” and “Engineers.” The late David Bowie (it’s still strange to write that) was the ultimate musical chameleon who enjoyed artistic and commercial success in a multitude of musical styles including glam rock, dance music, punk, soul, pop, and new wave, of course, to name a few. Released in early 2016, a mere two days before his death at 69, Blackstar (Columbia/ ISO) might be the alltime greatest farewell gift a musician has ever given his fans. Not nearly as accessible as its exceptional 2013 predecessor The Next Day, nevertheless Blackstar is essential Bowie, finding him continuing on his path 30

LIVING OUT

of innovation and experimentation. Almost everything Bowie sings on this seven-track disc, the shortest number of songs on a Bowie album since Station to Station from 40 years before, is weighted with what we now know – that Bowie was dying of liver cancer. As with Station to Station, Blackstar opens with an epic title tune, which, at almost 10 minutes in length, is one of Bowie’s most daring and theatrical compositions. Clocking in at nearly six and a half minutes, “Lazarus,” which begins with the lines “Look up here, I’m in heaven/I’ve got scar that can’t be seen,” as well as its accompanying music video, subtly sends listeners a message from beyond. Also remarkable is album closer, “I Can’t Give Everything Away,” the most accessible song on the disc, which deserves to be Mr. Bowie’s final hit single. How far does Bowie’s new wave influence extend? Well, you can certainly hear it on Art Angels (4AD), the latest acclaimed album by Grimes (aka Claire Boucher). Considered by some to be Bowie’s “true spiritual successor,” Grimes, like Bowie, definitely has a way of putting art into her art rock. Beginning with the stringy and theatrical opener “Laughing and Not Being Normal” to straightforward new wave-revival dance numbers such as “Flesh Without Blood,” “California,” “Venus Fly,” “World Princess Part II” and the title cut, Grimes takes being weird seriously. Even more impressive is the way she isn’t afraid to merge the mood of the past with the mind of the present on standouts such as “Kill V. Maim,” “Realiti,” “Scream” and “Butterfly,” staking her claim on the dance-floor.

Grimes performs on June 14 & 15 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn >>

St. Lucia (aka Jean-Philip Grobler) bypasses Bowie and goes straight for Tears For Fears and Thompson Twins on its second album Matter (Columbia/Neon Gold). Backed by a synth and beats-driven band including his wife Patricia Beranek (who also serves as exec producer of the disc), St. Lucia focuses on the nostalgic dance-floor almost every one of the 11 tracks. Of particular interest are clubby tracks such as “Rescue Me,” “Stay,” “Home,” “Physical,” “Help Me Run Away” and “Dancing On Glass.”

Ten years after releasing its acclaimed debut album, Editors returns with the strongest album of its existence, the stunning In Dream (PIAS). Editors have mastered the art of sounding of the moment while respectfully honoring the new wave of the past. Whether aiming for the dance-floor, as on “Our Love,” “Life Is a Fear” and “All The Kings” or artfully sculpting a mood on “The Law,” “Ocean of Night,” “Marching Orders,” Editors is a “dream” come true. The double CD edition features eight bonus tracks.

Like some other first wave new wave bands, Givers generously incorporates a number of musical influences, including Afro and world beat, zydeco (Givers hails from Louisiana, after all), glitch and fuzz, to mention a few, on its second album New Kingdom (Glassnote). The disc also showcases some great mixed gender vocal give and take (check out “Sure Thang,” “Blinking,” “Sleeper Hold,” “Wishing Well” and “Lightning”) while also giving Tiffany Lamson plenty of room to strut her own stuff.

Wasted on the young

I

t’s not as hard as you might think

it is to find something nice to say about the pefab four, formerly five, known as One Direction. Here it is: when they make straightforward dance pop, such as “Stole My Heart” (from Up All Night), the derivative “Live While We’re Young” (from Take Me Home) and “No Control” (from Four), they are at their least offensive. The rest of the time they have a habit of coming off as insincere and mechanical, even on their most mature effort Midnight Memories. Reduced to a quartet on the new Made In the A.M. Alternating between sultry siren (the summer hit single “Good For You”), sex kitten (“Hands To Myself”), club kid (“Kill ‘Em With Kindness,” which liberally borrows the whistle from Adam Lambert’s “Ghost Town,” “Body Heat” and “Survivors”),

and serious adult (“Sober” and “Camouflage”), Gomez sounds like she’s trying too hard to convince us that she’s grown, forgetting that actions speak louder than songs.

challenge to be innovative when you’re on a schedule of an album a year (although that didn’t necessarily hinder The Beatles). Pre-pubescent and teen girls (and boys) really do deserve better than this, and One Direction actually delivers those kinds of better goods on “If I Could Fly,” “Long Way Down” and “What A Feeling.” Now that Disney divas Miley, Britney and Xtina are over the hill, Selena Gomez continues to grab for their collective 32

Still missing the Spice Girls? Get over yourself! Or listen to Get Weird (SYCO/ Columbia) by Little Mix. Essentially a Spice Girls for the 21st century, Leigh, Perrie, Jesy and Jade of Little Mix hit it big the way that most young (and especially British) musical acts do these days – they won a TV talent show. Of course it helped that the talent show was Simon

Cowell’s nauseating The X Factor. From the graphics to the urban edge of the music, Get Weird sounds like it’s intended to prove that Little Mix has grown up a little, but also isn’t afraid to mix it up some. How weird is it? “Weird People” isn’t as weird as its title would like you to believe, although it’s not a total waste of time. “Hair” and “Grown” are Little Mix’s most overt attempts at showing its street side, but only end up being contrived. “O.M.G.” is such a blatant violation of Britney’s “Oops…I Did It Again” that it should come with a parole officer. If there’s no trace of auto-tunes, then Little Mix deserves to be commended for the a cappella work-out finale “The End.” Not an anglophile? All-American allfemale quintet Fifth Harmony from Miami might be more your speed. The five young women, a product of X-Factor

USA , owe a debt to En Vogue and Destiny’s Child in equal measure on its debut Reflection (SYCO/Epic). From the convertible in-joke of “Top Down” to “Bo$$” (in which Michelle Obama gets name-checked in the chorus, along with “Oprah dollars”), Fifth Harmony earns its

share of the girl power pie. These girls are in control on “Sledgehammer” and “Worth It” (holding their own against Kid Ink’s interruptions), and not too full of themselves to pay tribute to forebears as in “Like Mariah” and the boldly Beyonceesque “Them Girls Be Like.” The only thing missing is a legit club track, which is remedied on the deluxe edition, which includes three additional tracks, the best of which is the dance-floor bound “Body Rock” (not to be confused with the classic Maria Vidal tune of the same name).

At the complete opposite end of the spectrum you will find young West Coast freak-folkie Jessica Pratt and her remarkable new album On Your Own Love Again (Drag City). Sounding old and wise beyond her years, Pratt’s style recalls the bare-bones California

folk of the mid-to-late 1960s while also being undeniably contemporary. To get the full-range of Pratt’s vocal abilities, check out the gorgeous and accessible “Greycedes,” as well as “Moon Dude” and “Back, Baby.” It’s not clear why The Neighbourhood, led by vocalist Jesse Rutherford, felt it necessary to open its second full-length disc Wiped Out! (Columbia) with the 30 second silent “A Moment of Silence.” It isn’t like what follows was going to blow out our ears. In fact, songs such as “Cry Baby,” “The Beach,” “Daddy Issues,” “Greetings From Califournia” (sic) and “Single” could best be described

as surf soul. The heaviest song, album closer “R.I.P. 2 My Youth,” actually sounds somewhat out of place when compared to the rest of what preceded it.

It’s been a while since Mat Kearney’s been a kid, but he hasn’t lost any of his youthful Bible Camp exuberance on his fourth full-length album Just Kids (Republic). Not one to shy away from being a Christian musician with a message, Kearney fills his songs with references to Amy Grant, rolling away the stone, praying and more. Kearney opens with “Heartbreak Dreamer,” a hip-hop influenced track, and keeps it fresh with the synths and various modern musical tools on “Moving On.”

The Neighbourhood performs on June 15 in NYC at Terminal 5.

Folky Fellas’ Club In a dozen years, a relatively short period of time really, Ray LaMontagne has evolved from a soulful folkie (read: a cross between Van Morrison and Otis Redding) into a prog-rocker with a Pink Floyd jones. LaMontagne first hinted at the transition on 2014’s psychedelic Supernova (produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys) and fully embraces it on his latest, Ouroboros(RCA). Co-produced by LaMontagne and Jim James (of My Morning Jacket), the eight tracks on Ouroboros are split evenly into two parts. LaMontagne lifts off with the gorgeous near-epic “Homecoming.” The electric shift in “Hey, No Pressure” shows James’ influence which continues through the remaining songs of part one. LaMontagne mellows out considerably in the second part, from the most Pink Floydian track “In My Own Way” through “Wouldn’t It Make A Lovely Photograph.” Singer/songwriter Greg Laswell enters the break-up album fray with Everyone Thinks I Dodged A Bullet (Vanguard). If you might think the album title says it all, just wait until you hear the songs. After less than three years of marriage to fellow singer/songwriter Ingrid Michaelson, Laswell found himself divorced, a situation that is known to yield an unexpected harvest of inspiration. Delivered with strings and synthesizers, and as emotionally raw as heartbreak can be, songs such as “And So I Tried To Sleep,” “Dodged A Bullet,” “Watch You Burn,” “Out of Line,” “Lifetime Ago” and “Not Surprised” all deserve a place in the heartache hall of fame. Bitter Pill (Capitol), the debut studio recording by Gavin James, an Irish crooner in the tradition of Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran, is pleasant if not earth-shattering. The most captivating tracks are the ones in which James sounds most available to listeners, such as the title cut, “Nervous,” “Remember Me,” “Hole In My Heart,” “Coming Home” and “Ghost.” The problem is that the inconsistent energy of the album causes some of the songs to blend together. However, album closer “The Book of Love,” James’ respectful cover of The Magnetic Fields tune, makes Bitter Pill even easier to swallow. 34

Ray LaMontagne performs on June 21 at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester and on June 22 at Celebrate Brooklyn in NYC. Described as the “most personal and authentic statement” by Wakey Wakey (aka Michael Grubbs), Overreactivist (The End) is a pleasant mostly pianodriven pop album that combines echoes of the past while remaining firmly planted in the present. Grubbs is in possession of a powerful voice giving songs such as “Light & Nothing More,” “Big Town Love,” “Stop Turning,” “Cruel You,” “Heartbroke” and the synthy “Homeless Poets,” the necessary boost they need to get their sentimental messages across to listeners. Cullen Omori, formerly of the Smith Westerns, makes his solo debut with New Misery (Sub Pop). Bubbly album centerpiece “Cinnamon” is one of the sweetest and tastiest tunes you will hear this year. It is surrounded by songs that run the gamut from retro pop (“Synthetic Romance”) to dream pop (the title track) to modern psychedelia (“No Big Deal”) to alt-pop (“Hey Girl”), making New Misery a pleasurable listening experience. Willie Nile, the elder statesmen in this lot, has been around since New Wave was new the first time around. In fact, he was a label-mate of one Patti Smith at the time of the release of his debut disc. More than 35 years later, Nile is still at it. Released just in time for the U.S.’ own brewing civil war, World War Willie (River House), sounds like Nile has been consuming a steady diet of Springsteen on songs such as “Forever Wild,” “Let’s All Come Together,” “Trouble Down In Diamond Town” and “When Levon Sings.” The “Sweet Jane” cover is a reverent homage to the late Lou Reed.

United Methodist Church’s inhospitality toward its LGBTQs The United Methodist Church is in the need of prayer. And, one that emphasizes full inclusion of all its parishioners. At General Conference last month in Portland the struggle to move the church’s moral compass against its anti-LGBTQ policies was courageously demonstrated when over 100 United Methodist Church(UMC) ministers and faith leaders came out to their churches - with Rev. Jay Williams of Union United Methodist Church in Boston’s South End as one of them. While these ministers and faith leaders undoubtedly moved the hearts of many the church’s policies remain unmoved. In 2016 to still be fighting for LGBTQ full inclusion puts the church in question rather than its LGBTQ parishioners. And the UMC’s history of struggle on this issue clearly illustrates the defiant will for LGBTQ inclusion. For example, in 2013, the Reverend Frank Schaefer, pastor at Zion United Methodist Church of Iona in Pennsylvania, was forced to stand trial for officiating his son’s 2007 same-sex nuptials. “I love him so much and didn’t want to deny him that joy. I had to follow my heart,” Schaefer told the New York Daily News. The Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the Methodist Church, however, wanted to drill home to Schaefer and his allies that he — irrespective of familial love or Christian belief — blatantly and willfully violated the church’s law book, the Book of Discipline, prohibiting same-sex marriages. Sadly, little has changed in the UMC on this issue since the well-publicized trial of Reverend Jimmy Creech in Nebraska. In 1998 the Judicial Council of the United Methodist Church ruled that Creech, a heterosexual ally, violated church law by blessing the union of two lesbians. Following the Judicial Council’s ruling,

LGBTQ community — is one of them. And it is the one institution least expected to be lauded among LGBTQ people of African descent because of the Black Church’s notorious history of homophobia. But UUMC is a movement, and with its pastor’s recently coming out it’s an example of full inclusion as a welcoming church body.

For these acts of ecclesiastical disobedience, that the jury felt was of biblical proportions, Creech was defrocked and lost his ministerial credentials. When asked by The Advocate that year why he continued to marry same-sex couples while knowing the church’s position, Creech rightly stated the following:

“A cultural prejudice... has been institutionalized in the church. The position of the church is wrong, it’s unjust. It’s discriminatory. It isolates a part of our population, part of the brothers and sisters of the human family. It denies their humanity, considers their own humanity to be somewhat unnatural or immoral or sinful.” However, the UMC’s exclusionary language and practices toward LGBTQ people will not stop those of us who feel called to ministry. If anything, it confirms our calling that much more. While it is clear that the UMC is not in lockstep with the changing societal tide toward LGBTQ acceptance, it is also not in lockstep with its own more progressive arm of “reconciling and inclusive” congregations.

Union United Methodist Church (UUMC), a predominately African American congregation located in Boston’s South End — once the epicenter of the city’s

Since June 2011 more than 100 Methodist ministers in New England have pledged to marry LGBTQ couples in defiance of the denomination’s ban on same-sex unions. Approximately one out of nine Methodist clerics signed a statement pledging to open their churches to LGBTQ couples that stated, “We repent that it has taken us so long to act… We realize that our church’s discriminatory policies tarnish the witness of the church to the world, and we are [complicit].’’ Knowing where Methodist clerics in New England stand on same-sex marriages, Schaefer officiated his son’s nuptials here in Massachusetts. The public trials of Creech and Schaefer were disciplinary acts to evoke fear among our allies. While UMC’s ultimate objective is to reinforce ecclesiastical norms, this recent public act of discrimination by the General Conference not only feeds into the existing climate of religious intolerance in this society, but it also has LGBTQs constantly questioning their self-worth and relationship with the church. However, as LGBTQ people we must know that religious intolerance and spiritual abuse are antithetical to the social gospel of inclusion, and that all people have the same sacred worth — even if the United Methodist Church doesn’t practice it.
