Court O.K.’s Gay Couple’s Adoption
Arizona governor vetoes anti-gay bill Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed the controversial “license to discriminate” bill that would have given Arizona business owners the right to refuse service to GLBT people if serving them would have offended the business owners’ religious beliefs. Brewer said the bill was unnecessary legislation that threatened the state’s recovering economy by driving away high-profile events such as next year’s Super Bowl and corporations looking to relocate to Arizona. “Religious liberty is a core American and Arizona value — so is non-discrimination,” Brewer said at a news conference announcing the veto.
She said the proposed law, known as Senate Bill 1062, was too broadly worded and could have resulted in “unintended and negative consequences.” Brewer also said she hasn’t heard of a single instance in which an Arizona business owner’s religious liberty was violated. “After weighing all of the arguments, I have vetoed Senate Bill 1062 moments ago,” Brewer said during the news conference. “Our society is undergoing many dramatic changes. However, I sincerely believe that Senate Bill 1062 has the potential to create more problems than it purports to solve.”
Kansas house Passes Bill Allowing Service refusal to gay couples The Kansas House OK’d a bill that aimed at keeping individuals, groups and businesses from being compelled to help with same-sex weddings. According to The Kansas City Star, exemptions apply to individuals, groups and businesses who cite religious beliefs in refusing to recognize a marriage or civil union,
Idaho’s top court granted adoption rights to the spouses of gay and lesbian couples. The unanimous decision reverses a lower court’s ruling and states, “a person’s gender or sexual orientation [is] not part of the legal criteria that allowed a minor to be adopted by an in-state adult resident.” Reuters reports that the ruling stems from an adoption petition filed last year by an Idaho woman shortly after her marriage in California to her same-sex partner, who has two sons.
Mizzou’s Michael Sam Announces He’s Gay For the first time in history, an openly gay man will play professional football. Assuming of course, the University of Missouri defensive end Michael Sam is drafted in May. Sam, who came out to his college teammates before the start of the 2013-14 season, was this year’s Associated Press’ SEC Defensive Player of the Year and named a first-team All American player. Prior to his coming out he was projected to go in the third round, according to ESPN.com. However at least eight NFL executives and coaches – who chose to remain anonymous - told SI.com they predict his draft ranking will drop as a result of his coming out. NFL senior vice president of communications Greg Aiello praised Sam for his “honesty and courage.”
or to provide goods, services, accommodations or employment benefits to a couple. Antidiscrimination lawsuits also would be barred. Individual workers and government employees also would get some protections. The bill now goes to the Senate.
In a statement on behalf of the NFL, Aiello said; “Michael is a football player. Any player with ability and determination can succeed in the NFL. We look forward to welcoming and supporting Michael Sam in 2014.”

Rights Expanded for Lesbian and gay couples Since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was unconstitutional, a slew of state governments have struck down same-sex marriage bans. Hawaii, Kentucky and Virginia are the most recent to join the growing list of states recognizing gay marriages. Additionally, court decisions are pending in Nevada, Utah and Oklahoma.
STATES THAT HAVE LEGALIZED GAY MARRIAGE STATES THAT RECOGNIZE CIVIL UNIONS
Ad represents gay families Gay couples were featured on Super Bowl Sunday – in the commercials, that is. A Coca-Cola ad showed two men and their daughter at a roller rink. Their family outing was accompanied by a multilingual rendition of “America, the Beautiful.”
The federal government has also expanded recognition of samesex marriages in federal legal matters, including bankruptcies, prison visits and survivor benefits.
In a memo to all employees, Attorney General Eric Holder announced, “It is the (Justice Department’s) policy to recognize lawful same-sex marriages as broadly as possible, to ensure equal treatment for all members of society regardless of sexual orientation.” Holder promised that married couples would be federally recognized regardless of whether or not it’s legal in their home state. In response to the announcement, Republican Sens. Ted Cruz from Texas and Mike Lee of Utah introduced a bill that would
ensure that the states that adhere to the “traditional” definition of marriage receive the same level of regard as the 17 states that recognize same-sex marriage. “The Obama Administration should not be trying to force gay marriage on all 50 states,” Cruz said in a statement. “We should respect the states, and the definition of marriage should be left to democratically elected legislatures, not dictated from Washington. This bill will safeguard the ability of states to preserve traditional marriage for its residents.”
senate considers bill for discharged gay veterans A bill has been introduced in the Senate that would grant honorable discharges to gay and lesbian veterans who were expelled under the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, which was overturned in 2011. The Washington Blade reported that
Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) introduced the bill. According to the article, roughly 114,000 service members were dishonorably discharged because of their sexual identity.

President Barack Obama is considering an executive order that would ban contracts with federal contractors who don’t have protections for employees. In an interview with Bloomberg News’ Al Hunt, White House counselor John Podesta said that issue is one of the administration’s priorities. He said that, while Congress
is urged to pass ENDA, the President is prepared to take action. “Well, what [the President] said in the State of the Union was, he was going to require federal contractors to pay a minimum wage of $10.10,” he said. “The order that you’re talking about is under consideration at the White House. We’re looking at that.”
Maine Court rules in favor of trans student Maine’s Supreme Court ruled last month that the school district of Orono violated state law by prohibiting a transgender student from using the girls’ bathroom at a public elementary school.
According to the Bangor Daily News, this decision marks the first time an American court has
ruled it unlawful to force a transgender child to use the school bathroom designated for the sex he or she was born with rather than the one with which the child identifies, according to the Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders of Boston, which represented the girl and her family.

Uganda president signs Anti-Gay Bill Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni brushed aside Western threats and outrage, and signed into law a bill imposing harsh sentences for homosexual acts, including life imprisonment in some cases, according to government officials. This bill significantly strengthens Africa’s antigay movement. The move came weeks after Museveni’s Nigerian counterpart, Goodluck Jonathan, took similar action in his own country, threatening offenders with 14-year prison terms. The Ugandan law seemed even
tougher, threatening life terms on charges including “aggravated homosexuality,” meaning homosexual acts with a minor, a disabled person or someone infected with H.I.V. Museveni signed the legislation at his official residence at Entebbe, near the capital, Kampala, in front of government officials, journalists and a team of Ugandan scientists who had said they found no genetic basis for homosexuality — a conclusion that Museveni cited in support of the new law..
GLBT “propaganda” bill dies in parliament Bulgarian lawmakers have thrown out a law that would have ended GLBT people’s freedom of expression and freedom to assembly. According to reports, those

According to PinkNews.com, Avery Edison (a stand-up comedian) is back “in her bed” thanks to an outcry for her release. After her story went viral, Internet outrage and legal help prompted Edison’s transfer to a women’s facility. Shortly thereafter she was granted permission to leave Canada altogether. PinkNews.com reposts that Edison was attempting to enter the country for three weeks to visit her partner, but was denied entry due to overstaying her student visa in September. Edison live-Tweeted her detainment, writing; “Initial interviewing officer is telling another about my depression, keeps switching he/she. MY PASSPORT IS FEMALE.”
activist arrested at winter olympics Prominent Italian activist Vladimir Luxuria claims to have been detained by Russian authorities for several hours after carrying a rainbow flag saying, “Gay Is OK” at Olympic Park during the Sochi Olympics. According to The

New Gay Rights party to stand in s. african elections A new political party in South Africa that supports gay rights will make its first appearance in the upcoming elections. Michael Herbst of the Equal Rights Party told AFP that violence against gays and lesbians can no longer be ignored. “We need a voice in parliament to protect women from being raped because people want to cure them from being lesbians,” Herbst said. “We need someone in parliament when boys are bullied at school because they are thought to be gay.” 8

LI RADIO DJ’S HOAX LISTENERS WITH STORY OF HOMOPHOBIC MOM
Two Long Island radio DJs — Steve Harper and Leana Karlson — from K-98.3 FM allegedly attempted to provoke a lively discussion when they recently went on the air and told listeners about a local mom who refused to let her son attend the birthday party of a seven-year-old girl (“Sophia”) because Sophia’s parents were gay and that she did not approve of their “lifestyle.” The story went viral and was picked up by social media and TV outlets across the country, sparking outrage over the mom’s homophobic reaction and support for Sophia and her two dads. In response to the incident, The Long Island GLBT Network (The Network) reached out to the station to contact the dads and arrange for a birthday party for Sophia and other children of GLBT parents, when it was revealed that the story was a hoax. K-98.3 FM and its parent company Connoisseur Media were immediately under fire for the hoax, issued a public apology, suspended the two DJs and contacted The Network to open up a dialogue about the situation. In a joint statement issued to the media, the DJs stated, “We were attempting to spur a healthy discourse on a highly passionate topic, but we made a mistake by misleading our listeners into thinking that this specific situation actually existed.” “What’s sad and disturbing about this incident is that there was no need to make up Sophia’s story,” said Dr. David Kilmnick, Chief Executive Officer of
The Network. “We unfortunately could have shared with them dozens of stories of little Sophias out there. We hear real stories just like this from families all across Long Island every day.” After meeting with station management on several occasions, and also with the two DJs for three hours, Kilmnick says, “I do believe there was no malice; they made a poor and stupid choice to go about talking about a subject that is important to them for personal reasons. We continued our conversations with Steve, Leanna, station management and the greater public in a real and honest way. This unfortunate incident provided us with an opportunity to do something positive and educate the masses about the needs of same-sex families and their children.”

THE NETWORK CONTINUES TO EXPAND FURTHER ON EAST END
The Long Island GLBT Network (The Network) continues to expand its presence on the East End of Long Island with two new full-time hires at its Hamptons GLBT Center in Sag Harbor. Manny Velásquez-Paredes and Lilianne (Lili) Ogeka have recently been named the Hampton’s Center Program Manager and the Hampton’s Center Program Assistant, respectively, and have been charged with increasing services and programs for the East End’s GLBT community. Now, with the new staff in place, The Center can remain open full time, grow its youth and senior services, and continue to prepare for more outreach and visibility within the community on the East End. “The Network is extremely pleased to welcome Manny and Lili to its organization. In their new roles, they will help lead the strategic direction of our Hampton’s Center and expand our many programs and services in health, advocacy, education and more, and strengthen even further our ties with the community and encourage overall growth on the East End,” said Dr. David Kilmnick, Chief Executive Officer of The Network. The Hamptons GLBT Center, located within Old Whaler’s Church in Sag Harbor village, held its grand opening on August 10, 2013 with a goal of offering easier access to the Network’s programs for East End youth, who up until its opening, had to travel 120 miles round-trip to Bay Shore. The Hamptons GLBT Center will also offer programs and activities year round for seniors, adults and families.

Never one to rest on her laurels, Lauper is currently on tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of the release of her groundbreaking 1983 album, She’s So Unusual. Reissued in a deluxe doubledisc edition, She’s So Unusual (Portrait/Epic/Legacy) includes three bonus dance remixes on the first disc, while the second disc consists of eye-opening demos, rehearsals and other rarities. Beginning in April and running through July, Lauper will reunite with Cher (with whom she has previously toured) for several concert dates. With no plans to take a break from her boundless advocacy and charity work, Lauper has always and will continue to walk the walk.
You are currently on tour commemorating the 30th anniversary of your solo debut album She’s So Unusual. What does that album mean to you, 30 years after its release? It has been an amazing 30-year journey. The fact that this album is still loved by my fans after all this time means a lot to me. I never would have imagined back then that 30 years later we would be celebrating its release. Wow [laughs]! I am a lucky woman and (as) excited about my career now as I was 30 years ago.
The second disc of the deluxe edition of She’s So Unusual: A 30th Anniversary Celebration includes a wondrous array of demos, rehearsals, live tracks and more. Does assembling something such as this feel like you are exposing yourself, like leaving the house without makeup? Actually, it was really fun to go back, examine and remember where I was, where all of us who made this record together were at the time musically and emotionally. We had so much fun making this record and I think that comes through. Sure, there were creative disagreements at times, but we all just wanted to make a great record.
Which you did! Two of the selections, “Rules and Regulations” and “Right Track Wrong Train,” never made it onto the album. Do you remember why they didn’t? Why was it important for you to include them here? You have to remember in the ‘80s, albums were put out in two formats — vinyl and cassette. Vinyl was the main format. A vinyl album can only hold around 25 minutes or so a side. We could only put 50 minutes of music on it, so we picked the songs we thought were the strongest. “Right Track” was also a very good song but just couldn’t make the album so we made it a b-side of “Girls” (“Just Want to Have Fun”). “Rules and Regulations” really never came together in a way we were happy with so we shelved it, but I wanted fans buying this deluxe set to hear and see a little bit of everything, even “Rules,” which we never really finished in a way that was satisfactory to us all.
The first disc closes with previously unreleased remixes of “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” and “Time After Time,” which made me think of your connection to dance music and

out Front your re-emergence on the charts with your cover of “Disco Inferno” in 1999. Would it be fair to say that dance music was another way for you to stay in touch with and show your appreciation to your gay fans? I just always loved dance music. (It) was never gay or straight to me. Just love dance and have always had that part of me, whether making sure things were remixed or actually making dance music, as with “Inferno” and “Bring Ya to the Brink”.
You are also the Tony Awardwinning composer for the musical Kinky Boots. What does it mean to you to be the first woman to win a Best Score Tony (solo)? I am proud and humbled. To find such acceptance by the Broadway community is an honor.
You also became a best-selling author with the publication of your 2012 memoir — what was the experience of writing your memoir like for you? It was very therapeutic, to be honest. It was great to go back to the beginning of my journey and what brought
me here today; both personally and professionally. I tried to be as honest as possible because if you are going to share your story you owe it to your fans that buy the book.
Can we talk a little about your philanthropy and your True Colors Fund? Six years after you launched the first True Colors tour, the True Colors Fund is still going strong, with the third annual “Cyndi Lauper & Friends: Home for the Holidays” benefit concert, held in NYC in Dec. 2013 as an example. What does the success of True Colors Fund mean to you? When we started the True Colors Fund five years ago to continue the work of the True Colors Tour, I never imagined we would get this far in such a short period of time. Major milestones were the launch of the Give a Damn Campaign in 2010 and the Forty to None Project last year. The Give a Damn Campaign has provided a unique voice to inspire everyone, especially straight people, involved in moving equality forward for all. The Forty to None Project has filled a significant void as the first and only national organization solely dedicated to ending gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender
youth homelessness. The fact that we have been able to help provide these young people a voice, especially in Washington DC, is something I am particularly proud of. This is a fixable problem, we can bring the number of homeless youth who are gay or transgender from 40 percent to none, we just need to work together.
The Matthew Shepard Foundation was an early beneficiary of the True Colors Fund. Have you remained in contact with Judy and Dennis Shepard and were you able to speak to them at that time? I continue to be in awe of what Judy and Dennis have accomplished over the past 15 years. The choice they made to start the Matthew Shepard Foundation and to share Matthew’s and their story has helped transform the world in such a positive way that I do not think we can really understand the full impact of their work. Sharing one’s story, especially in the face of hatred and bigotry, is one of the most courageous things a person can do in life. Judy and Dennis have inspired so many people through their example to share their stories and the impact of that sort of change is immeasurable.
The fact that we have been able to help provide these young [GLBT] people a voice, is something I am particularly proud of. You recorded the song True Colors almost 30 years ago, and it is a song that has taken on a life of its own, for you and for others. When I recorded that song, I had a friend (named Gregory) dying from AIDS. When he got really sick, he said, “Hey, write a song for me so I am not forgotten.” Then this song was brought to me. I didn’t write it. Billy Steinberger and Tom Kelly wrote it, but when they brought me the song, I just wanted to sing it for my friend who had been told most of his life he was no good just because he was gay. He was thrown out of his home for being gay. I just wanted to let him know that he was perfect the way he was. I sang the song for him but then it took on a life of its own and I’m very proud that it has become so important to the community and that it connected the way it did.

I remember seeing your altruistic nature for the first time when you sang on and appeared in the video for USA for Africa’s We Are The World. What role does giving back to others play in your life – both personally and professionally? You always have to try and be the best friend, mother and wife you can be. I am far from perfect, but I do try. I fail a lot; but I do try and be there for those in my life. Professionally, I think that having success you should pay back, use the fame you achieve to give voice to some that don’t have a voice. (It’s) just the right thing to do. 12

GLBT...I?
When an Intersex Disorder Affects a Child in Your Life
We all know that gender is assigned at birth based on the genitals of the baby. But what happens when an Intersex Disorder makes that determination tentative, if not impossible?
Treatment Options
Boy or Girl?
A Child with DSD Having an infant with ambiguous genitalia is not something the average person considers when awaiting the birth of a child. Outside of a few medical specialties, many doctors might not even be too familiar with Intersex conditions. If you or a loved one find yourself the parent of a child with a DSD, you may be wondering how best to announce the birth to family and friends and how to answer questions. Broaching the subject can be difficult. It may be helpful to start with a simple, “We were as surprised as you to find out that our baby’s sex is not exactly clear to the doctors yet. Some babies are born with conditions that cause genitals to appear larger, smaller or atypical. The doctors are doing blood work and running other tests to determine the cause of the confusion. We will find out soon what is going on and what the treatment options are.”
During the months leading up to the birth of a child, the question of whether the baby will be a boy or a girl is often the subject of much discussion and speculation. Sometimes an ultrasound or an amniocentesis can tell with a high degree of certainty which version of the proclamation, “It’s a ___!” a new parent can expect to hear in the delivery room. And yet, in approximately one out of every two thousand births, a medical condition involving the development of the reproductive system can impact the visual determination of biological sex and make this announcement problematic.

Disorders of Sex Development, a variety of developmental anomalies commonly known as Intersex Conditions, are genetically or hormonally based syndromes that affect the development of both internal and external sex organs. Once called Hermaphroditism, these disorders can cause either a retardation or overgrowth of the genitals, sometimes making it impossible to tell the sex of the baby. Additionally, a DSD can impact gender development, causing a disconnect between the genetic sex of the affected child and the child’s gender identity.
Today, those treatment options are trending away from the oncestandard practice of genital surgery in infancy, which often resulted in unfavorable outcomes such as lack of sexual sensation or function or a rejection of the surgically imposed gender. Advocates for the Intersexed now recommend a wait-and-see approach that allows the affected person to have a say in the decision to surgically alter the genitals and
an opportunity for self-determination of gender. Until then, experts recommend that Intersex children be raised in the gender that the medical team deems most appropriate given the particular DSD, but that the option to change genders always be available. Several support organizations for families affected by DSD’s can be found on the web. Among them, The Intersex Society of North America, www.isna.org.

Solutions for the bedroom blues part 2: Sexual dysfunction in women
In part 1 of our 2 part article on sexual health in adults, which ran in our February issue, we took a look at sexual dysfunction in men. This month, we learn about sexual dysfunction in women and how it is more common than many think. In fact...
Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD) is very common. So much so that have been more than 12,000 research papers published on the topic. Patients are often scared to approach their doctor with questions about intimacy and, as a result, their relationships and personal happiness suffers. Hopefully the following answers to many common questions I’ve heard patients ask will help start the conversation during your next visit with your healthcare provider.
Q
What is Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD)? Achieving a functional sex life for women often requires a balance of many parts of their health, including physical, mental and relationship. Patients with FSD may complain of problems with desire for activity, satisfaction with their sexual relationship, frequency and satisfaction with obtaining an orgasm, and pain prior to or after sexual activity. Your doctor may use a questionnaire such as the Female Sexual Function Index to help assess the problem. The important thing to remember is that if you don’t feel satisfied with your activity, then talking with your doctor may result in a solution to your problem.
Of Women Suffer from FSD
How Common is FSD? Am I Alone? A recent study showed that 43% of women had complaints of poor sexual function. Most women complain that they lack desire to have sex and this increased with age. Interestingly, issues related to relationships had the largest effect on desire, arousal, orgasm and satisfaction.
Can FSD Be Caused by Medical Problems? Pain during sexual activity and difficulty maintaining adequate lubrication has been related to both increased age and urinary incontinence. While we can’t do anything about aging, there are many options for incontinence and talking with your PCP may lead you to the right specialist for your needs. Depression, and the medications to treat it, often causes both men and women to lack interest in sex. If you noticed a lack in sexual desire, increased fatigue and weight gain, have your doctor check to make sure your thyroid is functioning properly. As a Lesbian, Do I Need to Have the Same Screening Tests? Regardless of how you identify yourself, all women benefit from routine screening exams for breast and cervical cancers. Cervical cancer often has no symptoms until it is well advanced, but a routine Pap smear can detect it while it can be easily treated. By developing a relationship with a PCP, you can empower yourself to make the best decisions for your health going forward!.
I’ve had Certain Problems Since Menopause, Is There Anything I Can Do? Estrogen decreases as women age, leading to vaginal dryness and can cause discomfort with sexual activity. Some women chose to take hormone therapy to treat this; however there are risks that you need to discuss with your doctor. There are many vaginal moisturizing creams that can decrease pain when used in addition to adequate lubricants during sex.

Out Destination:
Washington, D.C.
It is always an adventure visiting the nation’s capital. Washington D.C. is one of the most culturally diverse cities in America and was recently named the “Gayest City in America” by The Advocate. As one of the places where samesex marriage is legal, Washington D.C. has become one of the top destinations for GLBT travelers.
Start off your visit with the must-see landmarks including
the White House, Capitol Building, Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial. Museum buffs will also find D.C. fascinating and the crown jewel of museums, including the Smithsonian, which requires at least a full day’s visit to fully take in all that it has to offer. However, there are also some lesser-known attractions that would be of great interest.
The Newseum is a six-level, hightech and interactive attraction that traces the history of news
reporting from the 16th century to the present day. My favorite exhibits include the Pulitzer Prize Photo Gallery which shows the award-winning images captured since the 1940s. The Today’s Front Pages exhibit shows 80 newspaper front pages from around the world and is updated daily. The 9/11 Gallery looks at how the media responded to the tragic events on September 2011. Also impressive is the Berlin Wall Gallery, which features eight 12-foothigh concrete sections of the original wall.
Another great and inexpensive museum to visit is the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. It is one of the most visited museums in the city and is great for families. Guests can ride in several 4-minute flight simulators, take a journey through space or to natural and manmade wonders of the world
at the Lockheed Martin IMAX Theater or watch a film projected on a five-story-high screen with six-channel digital surround sound. The museum also features the incredible Albert Einstein Planetarium with its high tech dual digital projection system, Sky Vision. For those individuals more interested in history, The Holocaust Memorial Museum is a tribute to the millions who died during the Nazi regime in Germany during World War II. The museum is located just off of the National Mall. The exhibit uses more than 900 artifacts, 70 video monitors, and four theaters showing film footage and eyewitness testimonies of Nazi concentration camp survivors. After a day of museum hopping, you may want to let loose and enjoy a cocktail or two. Washington D.C. offers a menagerie of gay bars and clubs for every taste and style. Some of the most popular joints include Town, Cobalt, JR’s Bar & Grille and Nellie’s Sports Bar. The vast majority of GLBT nightspots are centered around DuPont Circle, but there are other neighborhoods including Capital Hill, Bloomingdale and Columbia Heights that are quickly becoming hotspots for GLBT tourists and residents.
Capital Hill is traditionally where gay singles and couples move when they do not want to be right in the middle of the hustle and bustle of DuPont Circle. Offering a quieter, neighborhood feel, the area boasts several gay bars, gay-friendly restaurants and on weekends is host to Eastern Market, a hub of fresh foods, crafts and antiques. When in town, check in at the Renaissance Downtown. Conveniently located to all of the major attractions, the hotel features incredible service and amenities, a full-service spa, fitness center and a Starbucks in its hotel lobby. The rooms are elegantly appointed with luxury linens, large bathrooms and separate work and living spaces. While at the Renaissance, escape to Aura Spa, within the property’s Vida Fitness Center, for a therapeutic massage or facial treatment. Dining options within the hotel include Fifteen Squares, a traditional American bistro and The President’s Sports Bar, which offers light fare. There is so much to see and do in the city, it is best to plan at least three or four days for your visit. For more information, go to www.washington.org

Bring on the
Heat! A False Sense of Summer is Better Than Nothing This winter season has been a trying one. I personally feel as though I have been victimized by Mother Nature — and I’m sure many of you feel the same. This is a time when many of us are premeditating our plans for the warmer months in hopes that it lifts our spirits and, if we chant hard enough, the temperature as well. Is it possible to bring on spring and summer more quickly by mentally believing they are here? Well, maybe not, but we can certainly try these cold weather remedies to escape, at least temporarily, from the prison of ice and snow and get a taste of the heat.
GLO Natural
Moisturizing Sunless Tanning Lotion with Bronzers Sun worship typically results in a blessing of bronzed skin. Unfortunately, unless you’re in the southern hemisphere, summer isn’t here yet. Plus, prolonged exposure to the sun is not so great if you wish to stay youthful looking and healthy. But there is a solution to getting that summer glow now and leave people asking, “Where did you go?” This luxuriously creamy and smooth lotion is tops when it comes to invoking a summer “sense” within you. It literally brings your senses to life with a scent that makes you feel like life truly is a beach. Think coconut, vanilla and chai — tropical, sweet and spicy, it’s the perfect scent. You can use it now or anytime before the official start of summer to get your color going and have a head start before the summer solstice. Some will say there is no time for self-tanning. How about when self-tanning also doubles as a moisturizer, anti-wrinkle cream and anti-cellulite treatment? GLO Natural features powerful anti-aging peptides and nourishing jojoba to rejuvenate the skin. So it is skin care and summer color in one — works for me!
Summer Attire
Buy Now to Help Combat the Winter Blues Pretend that you are going on vacation to somewhere exotic. You’re going to need swimwear, right? It is never too early in the season to check out bikinis, board shorts, and for the show it all risqué types, thongs and man-kinis. Shopping for summer attire early is a great way to get ahead of the seasonal trends, while also combating the winter blues. It’s also a reminder that summer is just around the corner. With the bright, summer color season heading back our way, we can have fun once again injecting color into the tiny bit of fabric we will be using to avoid indecent exposure come beach time. We all know we cannot wait to take our clothes off! So, start thinking sun and sand, and savor the cold because come August, you will be wishing for more temperate weather.

The Perks and Pitfalls of Having Credit In last month’s issue of Living Out, we took a look at the importance of a credit score and how it reflects your credit worthiness. This month, we go a little deeper and offer up some of the pluses and minuses of having credit that will hopefully stay in mind and help you better navigate your way through the financial waters.
Difficulty Purchasing a Car Many car dealers and loan lenders will check your credit before giving you a car loan. With bad credit you might get denied or you might get approved with a higher interest rate. Most of those “no credit check” car lots charge you extremely high interest rates that make it difficult to make your car payments.
Higher Insurance Premiums Interest Rates on Your Credit Cards and Loans Creditors and lenders see bad credit applicants as riskier than applicants with better credit scores. They make you pay for this risk by giving you a higher interest rate. Over time you’ll end up paying more in interest than you would if you have better credit and a better interest rate. The cost is higher with big credit card balances or major loans.
Security Deposits on Utilities Utilities companies – electricity, phone, and cable – check your credit as part of the application process. If you have bad credit history, you may have to pay a security deposit to establish service in your name.
Difficulty Getting a Job
Better Chance for Credit Card and Loan Approval Because creditors and lenders think your bad credit is a risk, they might not want to lend to you at all. You may find that your applications are being denied.
Certain jobs, especially those in upper management or the finance industry, require you to have a good credit history. You can actually be turned down for a job because of negative items on your credit report, especially high debt amounts, beankruptcy, or outstanding bills.
Insurance companies check credit too. They say that lower credit scores are linked to higher claims filed. Because of this theory, they check your credit and charge a higher premium to those with lower credit scores, regardless of the number of claims you’ve filed.
Difficulty Starting Your Own Business Many new businesses need bank loans to help fund their startup. A bad credit history can limit the amount you’re able to borrow to start a new business.
Difficulty Getting Approved for an Apartment Who knew landlords checked credit before allowing you to sign a lease? It’s true. Having bad credit can leave you without a home.

Honoring Notorious Gladys Bentley In celebrating Women’s History Month, I want to personally celebrate the courage and strength of sistah-warrior Gladys Bentley (1907-1960). Bentley, a 250-pound AfricanAmerican lesbian (who today we would consider transgender), was known as “America’s Greatest Sepia Piano Player” and the “Brown Bomber of Sophisticated Songs.” Her fall from the entertainment spotlight, however, is a cautionary tale about what can happen to us during a repressive political era when both church and state are our enemies. A talented pianist and blues singer, and one of the most notorious and successful entertainers during the Harlem Renaissance, Bentley cultivated a large GLBT following up until the 1950s. As an AfricanAmerican woman whose success derived from her raunchy and salacious lyrics to popular tunes, Bentley not only openly sang about sex, but she also openly lived and celebrated her sexual orientation as an out lesbian. “It seems I was born different. At least, I always thought so,” Bentley told Ebony magazine back in the ‘50s. From the time I can remember anything, even as I was toddling, I never wanted a man to touch me. Soon I began to feel more comfortable in boys’ clothes than in dresses.”

LIVING OUT
Known to perform in her infamous white tuxedo and top hat, Bentley’s gender-bending would label her by today’s queer lexicon as a “stone butch.” But in black queer parlance of that era, she was a “bulldagger.” And the police constantly harassed her for wearing men’s clothing. In the ‘50s, the country was on a campaign to restore traditional gender roles that were disrupted by World War II, and McCarthyism was its policing mechanism. Special attention, however, was given to GLBT people. In February of 1950, McCarthy captured the nation’s attention with its anticommunist propaganda that the State Department was riddled with cardcarrying members of the Communist party. Just two years prior, in 1948, the House of Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) had its most infamous case: the indictment of Alger Hiss. With the passing of the McCarran Act in 1950 all noted communists were registered as foreign agents, denied passports, and excluded from employment in both the government and in the defense industry. The witch-hunting did not only target real and imagined communists, but it also targeted the nation’s GLBT population, with a vengeance.
women, and ethnic and queer minorities filled those vacancies. Women of the time not only transgressed traditional career opportunities, but also traditional dress codes. Women wearing pants to work and on the street, and their availability to purchase pants in department stories, gave women the freedom to dress down and still be viewed as acceptable. For gender-bending lesbians like Bentley, the wearing of pants — usually confined to the privacy of their homes, lesbian bars and on the performance stages — was
would not have conjured up the wrath, fear and disgust that interracial marriage did. With antimiscegenation laws operating in all states until 1967, and with GLBT people today being denied the right of both state and church weddings, Bentley single-handedly performed a coup d’etat against the institution of marriage and the prohibition against miscegenation. She married her white girlfriend in a civil wedding ceremony. To punish her, the forces of McCarthyism and the Black Church made Bentley conform. For supposedly taking female hormones to cure her of her lesbianism, Bentley wrote an article for Ebony magazine proclaiming, “I am woman again!”
‘It seems I was born different...I never wanted a man to touch me. Soon I began to feel more comfortable in boys’ clothes than in dresses.’ - Gladys Bentley
With the absence of 16 million men, predominately white, in the workforce because of the war,
a welcomed freedom. However, without the consent of the times, except in the private and acceptable spaces where pants were permissible, Bentley wore pants since the ‘20s. As troubling as that was, especially given her public lesbianism, Bentley accosted the sanctity of marriage with her active participation in this country’s racial and gender obsession — interracial marriage — to her white girlfriend. Had her “woman-friend” been African-American, their coupling would have clearly been subjected to condemnation and jeering, but their same-gender loving relationship
The Black Church stopped railing against her, and the black press lauded her conformity. Now as a churchwoman and ordained minister, the ceremonial act of compulsory heterosexuality had to be consummated. She married a man, albeit 16 years her junior. With the church’s belief in a heterosexual paradigm as the model to showcase black humanity in order to win God-given civil rights, the dynamic between the black press and the Black Church set up a new sexual McCarthyism. The cautionary tale here is that it is not so different today.

Discrimination’s Due A new study conducted by Ann P. Haas and Philip L. Rodgers of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and Jody L. Herman of UCLA Law School’s Williams Institute forges an important link between suicide attempts by transgender people and the discrimination they face.
Specifically, the National Transgender Discrimination Survey, or NTDS, states that 78% of those who responded to the survey and had suffered physical or sexual violence while at school attempted suicide. Further, 65% had attempted suicide after suffering the same at their workplace. The study covered more than just violence in the workplace and at school: it shows that 57% of transgender people who were rejected by their family attempted suicide, 69% had been homeless, 60% were refused treatment by a doctor, and 57-61% had been disrespected or harassed by member of law enforcement. Let’s step back and put this into context, by way of a study from October 2010, conducted by the National Center for Transgender Equality and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Their findings showed that 41% of transgender people in the United States have attempted suicide; this is almost nine times the national average. It is with no pride that I say that while I am not in that 41% who attempted suicide, I most certainly have been very close on more than a few occasions. I’ve been lucky, nothing more, to not be part of this statistic. I have also had a great many transgender friends who have attempted suicide, and a handful or so who were successful.
To be frank, I don’t think I needed this study to tell me that transgender people are more likely to attempt suicide based on the discrimination and ill treatment we may face. This link seems brutally obvious. It is damned hard to be transgender in this society. We live in a culture that is very rigidly gender divided. We segregate the lives of our children from before birth, selecting pink or blue from the first ultrasound while holding “gender reveal parties” to share the news with family and friends. Everything from womb to tomb is built around a notion that we’re either one or another, and we must live up to sometimes unrealistic expectations around this. Transgender people, in this culture, are treated as something that everyone is free to mock and everyone is allowed to hate. To some, we’re “traps,” existing only to somehow turn straight people queer — and deserve all the hate, derision and violence sent our way. I am of the belief that it is gender that lay at the heart of not only the discrimination that transgender and gender non-conforming people face, but the same core lies at the heart of homophobia. It is not the sexual practices that create an aura of fear, but the sense that they will be viewed as somehow less a member of their gender for having a same sex attraction. That notion that we are cruel deceivers is at the heart of every cliché Hollywood has foisted on us, from The Silence of the Lambs to
According to the most recent National Transgender Discrimination Survey on violence, not only in school and at work, but self-inflicted violence caused by the rejection of transgender men and women in their families shows more than half of those surveyed attempted suicide.
suffered violence at school
78% and Mrs. Doubtfire. The only reason, according to the mass media, for a person to appear as the opposite sex is for some illicit gain. That is when they’re not trying to tantalize the audience with stories about our genitals and what they may or may not look like. Those who try, again and again, to thwart transgender rights, particularly surrounding public accommodations, tell anyone who will listen that we’re akin to rapists and molesters aiming for your wives and daughters in the ladies room, ignoring that we — like nearly everyone else — merely want a safe, clean place to go to the toilet. When we’re not viewed as deceptive, we’re presented as beings with some form of tragic disability. We are disordered, a victim of gender dysphoria. We’re not to be feared, it would seem, but rather pitied for the cruel fate that is our lot in life. That we are suicidal is simply part and parcel of us poor dears being in a body that does not match our spirit. Hogwash! If there is one clear thing from this most recent study, it is not that being transgender drives us to suicide, but rather, it’s the discrimination and violence we face for being transgender. This is why bills like California’s AB 1266 are so vital. This is not about peeping toms in bathrooms, but about affording transgender and gender nonconforming students an equal footing in schools. I wish this was not such a radical notion that if you discriminate against us, and let us live our lives on an equal footing, a lot less of us would be showing up dead. The findings of the NTDS should be obvious and very much common sense. It’s high time that transgender people were given a fair shake.
65%
had attempted suicide after suffering from violence at their workplace.
6 in 10
were refused treatment by a doctor. More than
HALF
of transgender people who were rejected by their family attempted suicide.
1 in 7
had been homeless and almost had been disrespected or harassed by a member of law enforcement.
