Two lgbt murders within 24 hours leaves community in ‘state of emergency’ The incidents of murder among transgender women in the US continue to rise. Keisha Jenkins, 22, was killed on a Philadelphia street on Oct. 6, after reportedly being assaulted by five or six men when she got out of a car. When Jenkins fell to the ground, someone fired two shots into her back. Jenkins is the 21st transgender or gender nonconforming murder victim in the US this year, and the 18th transgender woman of color to be killed. Pedro Redding was arrested and charged with murder, conspiracy, and weapons charges, but police stopped short of calling it a hate crime, according to News One, Redding was allegedly known for committing robberies in
Gay family featured in soup commercial A new ad for Campbell Chicken Noodle Soup features two dads. In the 30-second spot, the dads are feeding their son a new Star Wars-themed soup while fighting over who gets to say Darth Vader’s famed “I am your father” line. The commercial is part of Campbell’s current “Made for Real, Real Life” campaign. One Million Moms, a media watch group arm of the American Family Association, is calling for a boycott of the soup because the commercial “push[es] the LGBT agenda” by “glorifying this unnatural marriage.”
the neighborhood where the shooting occurred. Just one day earlier, on Oct. 5, a man was found shot dead on a street in the Palmer Park area of Detroit. The victim, Melvin 30, was wearing women’s clothing at the time of his murder, Fox News Detroit reported that he identified as a gay man who would “cross dress from time to time in order to make a living.” So far this year, there have been 21 murders of transgender and gender non-conforming people, according to the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP) – an advocacy group tracking such deaths. Transgender homicides have risen by 11% from the previous year.
uniform policy changes aims to promote acceptance Students in Puerto Rico now have more freedom when deciding what to wear to school. As long as they are dressed in uniform, students can wear pants or skirts regardless of their gender without being punished. Education Secretary Rafael Roman said that the new regulation he recently signed is meant to be inclusive of gay, lesbian and transgender students, the Associated Press reported.
man claims he lost job at catholic home because he’s gay A Virginia man says he was fired from the top job at a diocese-owned assisted living home because he's gay and married to his partner of 30 years. John Murphy alleges the bishop of a local Catholic diocese forced his removal, and he filed a discrimination claim against the Catholic Diocese of Richmond with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission last month.
The US-territory has made significant changes within the past couple months to become more inclusive of LGBT people. In mid-July, the socially conservative island legalized same-sex marriage and Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla recently made executive orders that benefit LGBT communities, one of which allows transgender citizens the right to change the gender on their driver’s license.
hiv vaccine begins in human trials Dr. Robert Gallo, the man who first proved that AIDS was triggered by the HIV virus more than 30 years ago, has a potential vaccine that began human testing in October, Science Alert reported. Gallo has been working on the vaccine for 15 years. The first round of testing will involve 60 volunteers and only look at the safety and immune responses of the patients. Testing for effectiveness will come later.
According to the Associated Press, Murphy said he had been told by the president of the home's board of directors that his relationship wouldn't be a problem, but he only served as executive director of the Saint Francis Home in Richmond for about a week before two deputies of Bishop Francis Xavier DiLorenzo told him that he was being fired because his marriage goes against church doctrine.
Southern baptist leader calls for same-sex marriage boycotts Rev. Albert Mohler, the president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, is urging Christians to not attend a same-sex wedding, even of their own child, because it signals “moral approval” of the union, in his new book. 6

He also contends that transgender people who are “saved” should consult with their pastors about whether to have surgery to return to their original gender.
Rand paul says lgbt discrimination laws are unnecessary Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and GOP presidential hopeful said the government shouldn't step in to protect workers against anti-gay discrimination by their employers, arguing that such protections are unnecessary and would expose businesses to legal problems. Paul was speaking to students at Drake University in Des Moines. In 2013, Paul voted against the Employment Non-Discrimination
Act, which would make it illegal for employers to discriminate against LGBT workers. Paul later explained his vote in a CourierJournal op-ed, saying he did so in part to protect religious groups against “discrimination.” In the same op-ed, he said it is “offensive to compare the civil rights struggle of the 1960s to the issues associated with ENDA.”

Italian legislatures debate civil unions, adoption laws Italy has finally begun debate on a bill that allow gay and lesbian couples to enter into civil unions. It is anticipated that the bill, which has support of Premier Matteo Renzi, will be debated for months, as the issue is a contentious one. Included in the law would be partial pension rights, automatic inheritance and would enable same-sex partners to adopt each other’s children, if the child only has one legal parent. Italy remains the only major country in Western Europe that does not have legal protections for cohabiting same-sex couples, or same-sex marriage.
British athlete comes out on national television Tom Bosworth, Britain’s No. 1 Race Walker, is an Olympic hopeful and the holder of three British records in the sport, has announced that he is gay on BBC Two’s Victoria Derbyshire show. He is the first British track and field athlete to come out and said he did so in the hope it would make it easier for other athletes in his position.

Electroshock therapy used in conversion therapies A new documentary exposes the practice of controversial “conversion” methods that promise to “cure” gay and lesbian people in China. Produced by U.K. television network Channel 4, “Unreported World,” follows John, 22, and other members of China's largest LGBT rights group, the Beijing LGBT Center, as they take viewers behind the scenes for a close-up look at a few of the horrifying techniques – including electroshock therapy – used in clinics across the country. Less than a year ago, a Chinese psychological clinic was ordered to pay 3,500 yuan ($560) to a gay man for administrating such treatments, the Huffington Post reported. The court ruled that such "conversion" treatments were illegal.
Amnesty demands action on trans killings Amnesty International has demanded action to address the shockingly high transgender murder rate in South America, after a renowned activist was stabbed to death in her Buenos Aires home. The charity issued a strongly worded message to the Argentinian government demanding that better steps be taken to document and investigate trans killings. Diana Sacayán is the third transgender woman to have been murdered in Argentina in the last month. Marcela Chocobar and Coty Olmos were also murdered, and were heavily involved in transgender equality activism and causes.
Priest fired after coming out The Vatican fired priest Krzysztof Charamsa after he publicly announced that he is gay. Charmasa (pictured above with his boyfriend, Eduard), a 43-year-old monsignor had been at the Vatican's Congregation of the Doctrine of Faith since 2003 and came out after getting hate mail for publicly criticizing an anti-gay Polish priest, the Associated Press reported. The Vatican claims it didn't fire Charamsa for being gay – which in itself isn't a sin – but for making his announcement immediately before international bishops were set to meet as part of a synod to discuss outreach to gay Catholics, Reuters reports.

The goal of LIGALY’s National Coming Out Day School Awareness Campaign is to create safer schools for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students. Students engaged in a variety of activities to reach out to their school communities. Many schools held bake sales and distributed rainbow ribbons and Ally stickers, provided by LIGALY, throughout the day. Some schools shared information on NCOD during their morning announcements, while others had students share their personal stories with their classmates. The Gay World of Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez talks lesbian rumors, (maybe) dating gay men and how she’s proud of Nick Jonas’s ‘love for everyone’
An interview by Chris Azzopardi
S
elena Gomez is alive, revived and relieved.
After photos turned up in 2014 of Gomez scrub-a-dub-dubbing with gal pal Cara Delevingne, who's openly bisexual, what transpired? Gay gossip, of course. Gomez doesn’t care, she says, “because they weren’t talking about other people in my life for once, which was wonderful.” In fact, regarding the blogosphere buzz, Gomez, 23, tells me she "loved it," a testament to the entertainer’s true-to-herself, not-really-caringwhat-you-think-anymore persona. That same perspective is reflected in all the dizzying late-night pillow talk throbbing throughout her sexually liberated and self-reflective second studio album, Revival. For a small-screen darling who grew up under the watchful eye of Disney, Gomez's openness both on the album and in conversation is refreshing. After recently revealing that she was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease lupus in 2013, she concurs that, yes, this is her coming out party of sorts. (Actually, the way she puts it is, “werk!”) And so it is, as Gomez speaks candidly about other aspects of her life: "absolutely" questioning her sexuality, growing up around her mom's gaggle of mimosa-sippin' 10

gays and – cue the awws – her admiration for ex-flame Nick Jonas' "love and compassion for everyone.” Growing up in Grand Prairie, Texas, what was your introduction to the gay community? You have to understand: My mother is absolutely fantastic and she worked at a modeling agency when I was a very young girl, so every Sunday I would have brunch with her and all of her gays, and I just remember a lot of mimosas. It was the best. So, I’ve been around it my whole life and, you know, I love it. I have to tell you: On my 16th birthday my mom had a bunch of drag queens come out and they sang “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)” and it was sooo funny. As someone raised Catholic, accepting the LGBT community was never an issue for you then? Not at all. Look: There’s a huge difference in how I was brought up; the word “religion” is a very complex thing. It’s something you have to follow, and that’s not what faith is. Anybody who has a higher power, anybody who has anything they believe in: If you don’t know how to love other people, I don’t believe in it. It doesn’t work that way.
Photos Courtesy of Interscope Records Have you ever met a Selena Gomez drag queen?
Have you ever questioned your sexuality?
Yes! I had one who did one of the viral videos of “Love You Like a Love Song” (Willam Belli’s “Love You Like a Big Schlong”). (She) did a nasty version of it, which was hysterical, and I went to the Logo NewNowNext Awards and I got to meet her, which was amazing. Honestly, I feel like that’s when I made it – genuinely! I emailed it to my mom and she emailed it and CC’d everybody.
Oh, I think everybody does, no matter who they are. I do, yeah, of course. Absolutely. I think it’s healthy to gain a perspective on who you are deep down, question yourself and challenge yourself; it’s important to do that.
You say Selena drag queens were the true measure of success for you. But isn’t it true that you’re not truly famous until you’ve been the subject of a gay rumor? And last year, the tabloids had a field day with photos of you and Cara Delevingne. I’ve made it! How did you react to those rumors? Honestly, I loved it. I didn’t mind it. Especially because they weren’t talking about other people in my life for once, which was wonderful. Honestly, though, she’s incredible and very open and she just makes me open. She’s so fun and she’s just extremely adventurous, and sometimes I just want that in my life, so I didn’t mind it. I loved it.
Your friend Demi Lovato played a lesbian on Glee, starring as Naya Rivera's love interest. Who would you choose as an onscreen lesbian love interest? That’s a long list! Suki Waterhouse – she’s a model; she was Bradley Cooper’s girlfriend. As a performer, when were you first aware you had an LGBT following? My first single was when I was 16 and that went to No. 1 on the Dance Club charts so that was my introduction. I don’t think people really knew me, so I don’t know if it was a following necessarily, but once I hit “Love You Like a Love Song” status, that’s really when I started realizing it. And it was the best! My concerts used to be little kids, and then seeing the entire front row being all these guys who were wearing neon T-shirts and just losing their minds – it’s incredible. And then you see the jocks in the

out Front other corner throwing their boxers on stage. It’s like, “Oh gosh.” It’s amazing. You say “oh gosh” like it’s a problem. (Laughs) Well, it is a little bit; come on. Do you keep your gay fans in mind when you create music, particularly with Revival? Absolutely. One-hundred percent. Even with my earlier stuff, I’ve always tapped into it, and at the end of the day I’m a full-on pop artist, so I wanted the tracks to be incredible because I know how important that is. But on top of that, having the lyrics be equally as important was something I needed to do for this album. I think it just kind of came together really well. I spent a year on it and I poured everything I had into this album, and I was thinking of everyone. I was thinking of my diehard fans from everywhere. Have you ever dated or fallen for a gay man? Honestly, I don’t have that story, but two of my best friends do and it’s very Will and Grace-like, which I love. But no, I haven’t actually experienced it – wait, maybe that’s not fair to say. Maybe I won’t know? Maybe I don’t know? (Laughs) I just
thought about that. Oh my gosh. I’m thinking about my whole life now. Nick Jonas, Justin Bieber, Taylor Lautner: Aesthetically speaking, you have good taste in men. How jealous do your gay guy friends get of the people you’ve dated? Oh gosh, they’re more into it than I am. Honestly! Part of the reason I probably went out on a few dates is because of them. They’re just like, “Go! Go!” I’m like, “No!” They’re all about it, for sure. So your gay friends are your matchmakers? All the time. Whoever I’m with or like or don’t like, they’re all about dissecting it and putting me with other people. It must be fascinating for you to see Nick Jonas become such a gay icon. His outreach… his underwear pics… And his (gay) characters that he’s been playing! Scream Queens and the other show, Kingdom, which I thought was super rad. We actually talked about it at dinner one time. He’s incredible, and I think it’s amazing. I’ve known him for years – we were 14 when we met – so it’s crazy, because I actually knew him at a different time in his life.
Oh, I think everybody does, no matter who they are. I do, yeah, of course. Absolutely. I think it’s healthy to gain a perspective on who you are deep down, question yourself and challenge yourself; it’s important to do that.
– Selena Gomez, on questioning her sexuality
who I am. It was exciting for me while also being a little complicated; I had dealt with certain body issues and things like that. Once the album was put together and I went through so many different emotions, I knew that this was my moment to really share my heart, because there are so many people who follow or look up to me who are dealing with so much in their own life. I just want to give my all to it – give all of myself literally. Are there any gay people in your life currently who helped you on your journey to selfactualization? Yes, one of my dearest – his name is Gweny. He’s been on my Instagram many times – featured on my Insta! (Laughs) But he’s very sweet and unbelievably confident. He’s a dancer, so he knows how to move his body. Even when I dance, sometimes I’ll ask him to dance with me in the mirror so I can be comfortable in my movements. Sometimes I get a little selfconscious and don’t think I’m a great dancer and he’s able to pull me out of my head instantly. Also, I’ll wake up one morning and he’ll be cooking breakfast, and all of a sudden _The Sound of Music_ is on and it just makes my life happy. He’ll just run into my room and cheer me up and yeah, he’s been a huge part of the last four years of my life. He’s changed my life. You have had to become an adult in front of the whole world. For you, how hard is it to grow up in the limelight?
Now, to see him have this amazing perspective on life is awesome. I’m really proud of him. Are you surprised by the way he’s connected with the gay community? Yeah, for sure! Not in a bad way, but I was like, “Thank you.” It was kind of incredible for somebody to step out of their zone for a minute. It’s really incredible to see what he’s done. It’s incredible to not really be in a judgmental place and to really let down all of your guards. I just think you have to really let go, and you do have to find this in your heart. He clearly has had a love and compassion for everyone, and I think that’s great. The cover of your album, where you’re basically naked, is pure empowerment. You seem very comfortable in your own skin. Every other day it changes, but this year is a very important year for me. A lot of discovering and exploring

The worst part about it is the lack of forgiveness. When you’re a quoteend quote “child star,” it’s just unfair to be able to throw things at people when they don’t even know who they are yet. So that’s the only frustrating part, because, ultimately, that’s life. Everybody goes through things, and more than anything, I think it’s just the judgmental part. But I enjoy it. I love my life, and I’m so thankful for it. I have been able to experience life in a different way, and even though there are some low moments, it’s incredible to do what I do. You’ve credited Taylor Swift as not just a friend but someone you admire. How often do you and her shake it off at the gay clubs? Oh my gosh – how chic! And all the time. Taylor and I literally will have mini dance parties with all of her dancers who are 100 percent gay (laughs) – and it’s the best feeling ever! It is so fun, and we just lose our minds. So wherever you and Taylor are, it’s always a gay club? Even in her apartment? LIVING OUT

Yeah, in New York! On tour! Backstage! The whole thing.
What is the craziest thing you’ve read about yourself?
What is the most common misconception people have of you?
What have I not read about myself at this point?! My gosh. I think I’ve been pregnant 15 times. That’s always been the craziest thing for me, which is my favorite. I’ll be at the beach and have the flattest stomach or not, and regardless, I’ll be pregnant. It’s the most hysterical thing to me.
Lack of credibility. I understand that I come from Disney or whatever, but I feel like I’ve just scratched the surface of what I wanna do in film and music, to be honest. Even though I’ve been doing it for a while, I don’t feel like I have really gone there yet, and that’s fine. I think I gotta grow into it and make mistakes and learn and whatnot, but I do feel like that (credibility) is the one thing that people don’t give me enough of.
To debunk any rumors of a 16th baby – are you pregnant right now? No, nope – definitely not! (Laughs)
Do you ever Google yourself? I have, yes. It’s very dangerous. I can’t do it often. I didn’t do it after the album came out because I didn’t know what the reviews were gonna be, and I mean, I can’t do anything about it now – the album is out – so I have to be confident in what I released. But yes, I have, of course. If people text me things or if I hear people talking about stuff, yeah, I’ll do it.
It’s incredible to not really be in a judgmental place and to really let down all of your guards.

Eight by two There are many ways to praise the duo Beach House including saying that over the course of five durable albums, they have consistently maintained a high level of artistry and craft. This holds true for the twosome’s new disc Depression Cherry (Sub Pop). Taking its place on the musical landscape, somewhere between Cocteau Twins and Galaxie 500, Beach House finds a way to evolve without alienating its core fan-base. Songs such as “Space Song, “PPP,” “Wildflower,” and in particular “Bluebird” and “10:37” are excellent examples of this. Depression, cherry or otherwise, has never sounded so good. Inara George and Greg Kurstin are two busy people. Both are, or have been, members of other bands (see The Living
Sisters and Geggy Tah, respectively) and both are prolific songwriters. So it’s nice that they still find time to get together to write and record as The Bird and The Bee, which they have been doing for almost 10 years. The Bird and The Bee’s previous album found the dutiful duo paying homage to Hall & Oates, one of pop music’s most enduring pairs. On Recreational Love (Rostrum), The Bird and The Bee’s first album of original tunes in seven years, they take a gently electro turn for the better. The style is more `80s synth-pop with a human touch than the mind-numbing EDM dominating this part of the century. The 10 songs owe a debt to predecessors including Tom Tom Club and Nu Shooz (see the fall 2015 Target commercial), while also remaining true to the

groundwork that The Bird and The Bee has already laid for itself on songs such as “Young And Dumb,” “Jenny,” “Doctor” and “Will You Dance?” And, yes, we will dance. Wow, what a comeback! On Born in the Echoes (Virgin), its strongest album in more than 10 years, The Chemical Brothers are back to set the record straight about the out-of-control EDM trend that it helped to launch 20 years ago with Exit Planet Dust. Kicking things off with the beat and buzz-driven “Sometimes I Feel So Deserted,” The Chemical Brothers stake their claim with some invited guests. Q-Tip provides the voice for “Go” giving the song its direction, while St. Vincent illuminates “Under Neon Lights.” That’s Cate Le Bon on the title cut and Beck chimes in on the strangely pretty “Wide Open. The deluxe edition contains four bonus tracks, including extended mixes of the distorted track “Reflexion” and “Go,” as well as the psychedelic “Let Us Build A City” and the breathy “Wo Ha.” Attractive Australian brothers Keith and Michael Jeffrey of Atlas Genius made a splash with “Trojans,” a song from its debut disc When It Was Now. The album mixed electronic dance and rock sensibilities for an intriguing result. Inanimate Objects (WB) sticks with a similar formula but is not as immediately agreeable. You have to wait until the second track, “Molecules” (from which the album gets its title), for a measurable burst of energy. Atlas Genius does what it can to maintain the momentum on “Refugees” and “A Perfect End,” but the remainder of the songs are too generic to be memorable. Caitlyn Jenner isn’t the only one who went through a significant name-change and transition this year. Formerly known as Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., the duo of Josh Epstein and Daniel Zott have shortened their moniker to JR JR. To further simplify matters, the first album
released on Warner Brothers under the new name is self-titled. As for the 12 songs on the disc, it proves that not even a new name can stifle these guys’ creativity. Opener “As Time Goes” is a timely piece of over-the-top dance pop and “In The Middle” will keep dancers stuck to the (dance)floor as soon as they hear it. “Gone,” story song “Philip The Engineer,” the pleasing “In My Mind (Summertime),” and “Listening To Outkast, June 23, 2013” are all worth mentioning. If you miss the music of duo known as The Civil Wars then you will probably find something to like about mixed-gender Americana/bluegrass duo Mandolin Orange (left) and its new full-length disc Such Jubilee (Yep Roc). The title is a bit of a misnomer because there isn’t much jubilation to be found. That’s not a bad thing, because what is here is, including the domestic bliss of “Settled Down,” “From Now On” and “Daylight,” as well as the powerful antigun violence tune “Blue Ruin,” is quite special. Finally, birds of different feathers take flight on a couple of new releases. Heavy metal is not a genre known for its humor, but thanks to Eagles of Death Metal (hot Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age and pal Jesse Hughes) that is no longer the case. On Zipper Down (T-Boy/UMe), featuring 10 originals, including the brilliantly sarcastic “Silverlake (K.S.O.F.M.),” and great cover of Duran Duran’s “Save A Prayer,” Eagles of Death Metal soar. Working again with producer (and music legend) Chris Stamey, North Carolina duo Birds and Arrows (Andrea and Pete Connolly) return with Edge of Everything (birdsandarrows.com) as they prepare to make a new nest for themselves in Tucson, Arizona. In fact, you can hear more Southwest influence than Southeast on this disc in songs such as “Desert Home,” “Trainwreck,” “Wolf,” and “Edgewood.”

Fast food:
It’s fast, but is it really food? Have you ever really taken a close look at a Chicken McNugget? Do you know what it really is? I’m not sure anyone really can say. But I’m going to try. A McNugget is only 50% “chicken” – loosely defined when you consider it’s comprised of pulverized chicken skins and mechanically reclaimed meat, harvested from a processing plant where the chickens have been injected with hormones and raised in cages and don’t even really resemble anything close to a real, live, natural, normal
chicken. So, that’s the chicken part. The other 50% of the nugget is – well – here’s the ingredient list, from the McDonald’s website itself: Ingredients: White Boneless Chicken, Water, Food Starch-Modified, Salt, Seasoning (Autolyzed Yeast Extract, Salt, Wheat Starch, Natural Flavoring [Botanical Source], Safflower Oil, Dextrose, Citric Acid), Sodium Phosphates, Natural Flavor (Botanical Source). Battered and Breaded with: Water, Enriched Flour (Bleached Wheat Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamin
Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Yellow Corn Flour, Bleached Wheat Flour, Food Starch-Modified, Salt, Leavening (Baking Soda, Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Sodium Aluminum Phosphate, Monocalcium Phosphate, Calcium Lactate), Spices, Wheat Starch, Dextrose, Corn Starch. A few questions come to mind – such as, what in the heck are most of these ingredients? Is it supposed to be food? Research on your own some of these ingredients that are difficult to pronounce and you will be surprised as to what you will find out!
Every day, 64 million people eat at McDonald’s. 64 million. Every day. It’s hard to say how many of them order this particular foodstuff, but then, it’s not like the rest of the menu carries the healthy options. There are no healthy options on the menu. It’s all processed stuff that tries to pass for food, laden with chemicals that no sane human being would consciously put in their bodies or the bodies of the ones they love if they really knew what they were consuming. And yet, 64 million of us do it, every day. Fast Food, for some people, are an addiction not unlike cigarettes, heroin, or cocaine. So many efforts over the years have worked with some success to get people to quit smoking. The new campaign includes disturbing photographs on cigarette packs of people who bear the consequences of making that particular choice. The

point is, to paraphrase one tobacco executive, “to arouse disgust and revulsion for picking up cigarettes.” I wonder if a similar tactic applied to fast food chains would bring about the same result. There should be more outrage about how our society has been schemed into believing this is food. Problem is, the Big Food industry has more power and influence than Big Tobacco ever did. It won’t ever happen. You need to know what’s in the things you put in your mouth. Fast food is simply disgusting. It’s 90% fake food, and the few things on the menu that are real food certainly aren’t healthy and have no place in anyone’s healthy eating plan, no matter what some nutritionists have been paid to claim about fast food restaurants. Eating fast food simply puts you on the fast track to possibilities of disease and decay. It’s simple to walk away from that fast track. If You Cannot Pronounce, Don’t Eat It. There is good news though! Chipotle was the first national restaurant company to disclose the GMO ingredients in their food, and they are the first to cook only with non-GMO ingredients. Have you ever been to a Chipotle? It is always super busy, prices are reasonable and you are eating good clean food. Take Care Of Your Body. It Is The Only Place You Have To Live. Saving Money on Auto Insurance
With winter right around the corner, many of us are preparing for the weather ahead. We may be buying clothing for the cold weather and stocking up on hot cocoa, but it’s important for us to also think about getting around in that weather. With that in mind, many of us obtain auto insurance for our vehicles when we first get a new vehicle, but afterwards, we never think to take a second look and review it. Below are some tips on how to save some additional money on your auto insurance:
Choosing the Right Car Before even buying auto insurance, we need a car to cover! If you’re currently in the market for a vehicle, here are some questions to ask yourself: What do you plan on using the car for? Do you need to commute to work, and if you do, how far is the commute? The primary function of the car does make a difference on your insurance rate, as you’d be using it more if you need it to commute to work, and even more if you need to use it to drive a further distance to and from work. In addition to the use of the vehicle, the type of vehicle you are insuring makes a difference on the cost. Fancier, more expensive highperformance vehicles and larger SUVs usually cost more to insure than a less expensive sedan. The difference between the cheapest and most expensive insurance premium could be more than $2,000 annually.
Combining Insurance Policies If you happen to have another type of insurance besides auto insurance, such as homeowner’s insurance, usually combining the policies under one insurance carrier will give you some bundle savings. Another way to potentially save money is if you have multiple vehicles- if you insure them all under the same insurance company there may be potential savings there as well. 40

Maintain a Good Credit History Having a good credit history is actually beneficial to your insurance premium. Most insurance companies use credit information to price their insurance policies, and your credit history is considered a measure of responsibility. If you have a strong credit history, you’re less likely to file an insurance claim, and thus, your rates tend to be lower. To protect your credit history, be sure to pay our bills on time, don’t take on more credit/ loans than you need, and keep your balances as low as possible.
Check Your Coverage on Older Vehicles If you happen to have an older vehicle, it may not be beneficial to have full insurance coverage when it may be on its last leg. You can potentially save by checking and dropping features you no longer need on your coverage for the vehicle. Usually, comprehension (damages from outside forces such as theft, weather, etc.) and collision (damages from your car hitting something) coverage are the first two things to drop when reviewing coverage on older vehicles.
Raising Your Deductible Raising your deductible on your insurance is something you can consider to help lower your overall insurance costs, but it is important to understand the consequences. If you raise your deductible from a low amount, such as $500, to a higher amount, such as $2,000, you now would have to pay a substantially larger amount in the event you file a claim and/or if you get into an accident. If you raise your deductible, be sure that you have enough savings to handle the amount you’d need to pay if something unfortunate happens with your vehicle.
Check for Unnecessary Add-ons & Discounts A lot of insurance companies may have additional features added into their policy, such as towing, rental insurance (for when you rent a car), roadside assistance, and more. If you do not need these add-ons, you could save some money by cutting them out of your insurance plan. If you are a AAA member, for example, you may already have some of these benefits and could be paying for them on your insurance as well; drop them off your insurance! There are many discounts you can obtain on your insurance. Some include insuring a vehicle with safety features such as daytime running lights, antitheft devices, and more. Other discounts include taking a defensive driving class, having a good driving record, being a long-time customer, and being a college student away from home.
In the end, everyone has different uses for different vehicles they own. Whether it’s for leisure use or for work use, it’s important to have the appropriate coverage on your vehicle so you can save your money!

POV
by Rev. Irene monroe
My Disappointment with the Pontiff’s Visit Pope Francis continues to send seismic shock waves across the globe, and the rapturous reception he received from his historic sixday US visit gave us a glimpse as to why.
The pontiff, like Jesus, walked among the masses, kissing babies, visiting prisoners and the homeless, speaking out on climate change, poverty, immigrations, church sex abuse, religious liberty, the family and re-tweeting “Black Lives Matter,” to name just a few of his pastoral highlights. The Pope Effect brought throngs of Catholics and admirers out to see him wave to them from his “Popemobile” and to hear him celebrate Mass. And his effect not only brought Republican John Boehner of Ohio to tears, but it also brought Boehner to the realization he should step down as House Speaker. However, for many religious conservatives the Pontiff’s remarks and actions during his visit were viewed as heretical, desecrating century-old church doctrine, and diminishing his authority as the head of the church. But as the Pontiff aptly stated in his 2013 interview “the moral edifice of the church is likely to fall like a house of cards” should the Catholic Church, in this 21st Century, continue on its anti-modernity trek like his predecessor. With that statement I thought Francis was going to reformed, if not reinvent, an out-of-step

institution, but at the end of his visit the Pope was selling sadly the same product—Catholic orthodoxy. “Nothing more, nothing less,” Francis warning reporters on his trip from Cuba to Washington, DC,. “I may have given the impression of being a little more to the left, but it would not be a correct interpretation.” And he’s right. While Francis gave a well-deserved shoutout of praise to nuns – the backbone and housekeepers of the church – the ecclesiastical doors are still shut to ordaining women priest. Sadly, Francis doesn’t view the ban as a gender bias. When asked why the Pope remarked, “That can’t be done…The Church is female…it’s the spouse of Jesus Christ.” I recall Pope Francis’s remarks when flying home after a weeklong visit to Brazil in 2013 when he was queried about the much talked about “gay lobby” in the Vatican. “If they accept the Lord and have good will, who am I to judge them,” Francis said. This public statement is the most LGBTQ affirming remarks the world has ever heard from the Catholic Church.
But Francis’s words don’t match his actions. The Meeting of Families in Philadelphia included only one
workshop on LGBTQ issues —a panel with a celibate gay Catholic and his mother, and no workshop on LGBTQ families. But his point about LGBTQ families and marriages got across loud and clear during his talk to Congress with his subtle jab at gay marriage: “I cannot hide my concern for the family, which is threatened, perhaps as never before, from within and without. Fundamental relationships are being called into question, as is the very basis of marriage and the family.“ Francis’s trip to Our Lady Queen of Angels School in Harlem was important. The structural racism in the Catholic Church has made it an unwelcoming place of worship. African American Catholics are one of the smallest demographic groups in the church (of the 3 million black Catholics only 250 are priests among 40,000 priests, and only 16 bishops among 434.) Francis visited the Our Lady Queen of Angels School because the church by the same name was forced to close in 2007, and against the resistance, pleadings and prayers of its parishioners. Today the parishioners congregate in the park across from the church to worship. In Francis’s effort to reach out to Latin Americans with the canonization of Junipero Serra,
he opened old wounds with Native Americans. Serra, a Spanish missionary, left a horrific legacy trying to decimate California Native American culture. Letters to stop Serra’s canonization were written to both the Vatican and Francis but these pleas fell on deaf ears. “This letter serves to document the many reasons for our opposition to the canonization of Serra. Serra was the architect of the mission system; he developed the brutal inhumane policies that had no regard for our ancestors…We also requested a meeting with your Holiness to share our knowledge and oral history of Junipero Serra, the California mission system and the continuing impact of our historic trauma that continues within our Tribe today, Valentin Lopez, Chairman of the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band wrote to the Pope Francis. Pope Francis is a complicated, if not confusing pontiff. On the surface Francis displays a pastoral countenance to his papacy that seemingly extends to all. But rather we clearly see the geopolitics of a soft church bureaucrat evangelizing to today’s shrinking American Catholic Church - an institution that is less churched, less married, less white, and less conservative. And his welcoming demeanor is not enough, in my opinion, to bridge the diversity and divisions the American church face. LIVING OUT
