words from the editors and publishers:

After reading this issue, you may have to refrain from eating for several days…just kidding. What you will need to do is try some new eating and exercise techniques to help you shed any extra pounds you find yourself with following the holiday season. Honestly, I think that we have already started putting the pounds on, and we haven’t celebrated Thanksgiving yet. Am I suggesting a bit of indulgence? Yes, in moderation and if a medical condition prevents you from indulging without health consequences, try to modify, substitute, or change any of the recipes in this issue to better accommodate your dietary needs. Sugars, fats, and flours can all be substituted using appropriate substitutes for people with diabetes, gluten allergies, or the desire to lessen the calorie count by replacing the fat with something other then fat. For special vegan diets, there is usually a substitute available for almost anything even the eggs. Regrettably, we are not versed in all of the possible individual needs to give the appropriate and or correct substitutions and conversions but they are out there to be found either on the internet or in specialized cookbooks. Then it’s time to ring in the New Year, time for resolutions, and we all know exactly what they will be because it’s the same ones we have made for the last ten years or more. Intentions are always good but it’s such a struggle and like last year, you really want to succeed this year. So if one of your resolutions is one of the most popular, lose weight, go for it, but don’t do it alone, get help! Contact one of the qualified advertisers in this issue of LWM or find your own to help you formulate a healthy diet and exercise plan. Working with an outside source can make a significant difference in your success rate. Facing the scale alone is not nearly as foreboding as sharing a weekly weigh-in with someone else. However, don’t think that what the scale says is the most important aspect of a weight loss program, but it can be an incredible motivator when part of a weekly regime. I should know because up until about two years ago I considered myself a professional dieter until I finally found a plan that worked for me. And, while I am not skinny, or even considered thin, I am a satisfactory weight that I am comfortable with, I am healthy, and I feel good. For now, enjoy the scrumptious sweet delectable recipes from two recently released cookbooks, Eric Lanlard’s Afternoon Tea and Donna Hay Simple Essentials Christmas. Dr. Rose DiLeva, “Ask The Vet” tells us how to keep pets safe during the holidays. California Bans Plastic Bags Here’s some good news out of the last election in the USA. On November 8th, Californians approved Proposition 67, the statewide ban on carry-out plastic bags. The ban takes effect immediately and customers who forget to bring a reusable bag will have to pay at least 10 cents for a recycled paper bag or reusable alternative.

December A headache-inducing Month?

According to a recent national survey, 4 out of every 5 Americans anticipate having a holiday-related headache this year – with the #1 cause being related to holiday shopping. 39% of Americans say December includes the most headache-inducing moments of the year. As stress is a common cause of headaches, the biggest stressors related to the holiday season – including shopping crowds (35%), store lines (33%), holiday travel (18%) and preparing holiday meals (16%). Though the journey can be headache inducing, the result – buying the season’s most popular toy, seeing a child’s face when they unwrap it, being with family – is worth the headache. 8

Super Bowl tickets are always in high demand, and with high demand comes high prices. Tickets for the biggest sporting event of the year have steadily increased in the past five years, with the only exception being in 2014 when the average Super Bowl ticket price was $2,069. The current average ticket price for the upcoming 2017 Super Bowl is at $4,375, which is a 9% increase compared to the 2016 Super Bowl’s average ticket price of $4,000. December 2016

What kinds of changes to federal environmental policies can we expect to see from Donald Trump when he assumes the presidency?

Like many Americans, environmental advocates are alarmed at the results of the 2016 election. What worries them most is Trump’s call for reneging on the landmark Paris climate accord which secured commitments from the world’s largest polluters to scale back emissions. The agreement just went into force and the U.S. is committed to it for four years, but Trump insiders report The Donald may try to submit the agreement for ratification by an unsympathetic Senate (Obama has maintained ratification isn’t necessary) in efforts to derail U.S. participation. “If Trump yanks the United States out of the Paris agreement, the deal won’t die, but momentum could wane,” reports Brad Plumer on Vox.com. “One can imagine China and India deciding they don’t need to push nearly as hard on clean energy if the world’s richest and most powerful country doesn’t care. At best, progress would slow. At worst, the entire arrangement could collapse, and we set out on a path for 4°C warming or more.” Another sore spot for environmentalists is Trump’s attitude toward the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Initially Trump said he would disband the agency, but more recently said he would keep it in a stripped down form refocused on its “core mission of ensuring clean air, and clean, safe drinking water for all Americans.” Myron Ebell, a leading climate skeptic with the Competitive Enterprise Institute and no friend to the environmental community, is slated to run the new leaner EPA. Meanwhile, proponents of pipelines to move petroleum products from the great gas and oil fields of the northern U.S. and Canada are overjoyed at the Republican sweep of Election 2016. Given Trump’s stated goals of reducing the federal government’s role in energy and environmental policy while encouraging more infrastructure projects to connect production with markets and

consumers, environmentalists are bracing for a revival of the much-disputed Keystone XL pipeline project that President Obama rejected last year. There are fears as well of a green light for the Dakota Access Pipeline project currently in a holding pattern as native and environmental protestors stage a civil disobedience camp-out nearby. Not surprisingly, shares in the two companies behind the respective projects rallied following the election. For their part, environmentalists are already starting to refocus on what they can do without the support of the White House. “Under President George W. Bush, the environmental community took the battle to the courts and Congress and watch-dogged political appointees; we blocked attacks on the environment; we galvanized the public to take action,” says Kate Colwell, an activist with the non-profit Friends of the Earth. “After the more recent fights to kill the Keystone XL pipeline, ban fracking and shut down coal plants, the environmental movement is stronger than we have ever been.” “We will have to harness our new energy, join together, and use every strategy possible to fight against hate and greed and environmental destruction,” she adds. “While I wish we had a different fight before us, we must fight the one presented to us. The future of our country and planet depends on it.”

RENEWING PEACE

Karen Verna Carlson

“When people make changes in their lives in a certain area, they may start by changing the way they talk about that subject, how they act about it, their attitude toward it, or an underlying decision concerning it.”

—Jean Illsley Clarke

Peace is the organizing force behind most holidays this season, as well as the fuel for a fulfilling life. “Peace that passeth all understanding” describes the general life direction of my journey. It describes some episodes I’ve experienced and would like to experience more of—a few consecutive moments morphing into a peaceful state. I recognize peace when it happens, luxuriate in that harmony and contentment, and accept it as validation that more of my thoughts, words and actions are continuing to incline towards peace. More Peace Is Better Lots of smaller events move my life toward more peace. My inner state is my measurement. There in the sanctuary of my core is that unflappable serenity waiting to express more peace into this world. I don’t know about your peace, but my peace is very quiet and shy. It hides from chaos and violence, unlike the courageous peace of Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Dalai Lama, and many many many others. My connection to the peace that’s already within me awakens while I’m in nature, shuffling through crunchy leaves or deep fluffy snow just fallen. Reading literature, tending a fire, sewing and crafting always move me in a peaceful direction. Sweet animal photos melt me into a puddle of serenity. Peace Is Realistic Holiday resource tips for shopping and entertaining are indeed useful to move sanely and somewhat peacefully through festivities. Better time management can result in more, deeper, and longer moments of peace. String together enough peaceful moments, and tah dahhh you’re in a peaceful state. The characteristics of that state for me include a soft acceptance of what’s realistic; willingness to complete tasks in a gentle flow; and appreciation for pretty good results. This understanding is a fairly recent achievement after seven decades of research, which mostly revealed what doesn’t qualify as a state of peace. For example, it’s

neither exhaustion, nor relief at finishing by deadline. Peace is not repression. Peace is not boredom. Peace is not laxity. Peace Is a Priority Most of the time I forget to tune in to my inner sanctuary of peace because I allow distractions to muddy my priorities. Time, money and performance pressures frequently disrupt my peace. Avoiding probable peace disruptors when convenient to do so is a strategy that has merit. For example, I check landline voice messages in the morning, rather than before bedtime. This policy contributes toward a peaceful night’s rest, and frees me from wrestling with procrastination. Can you think of one peace disruptor you might easily avoid with a slight adjustment of timing, focus or location? Peace Needs Renewing I take conscious action to renew my commitment to peace as my contextual priority, my reference point for all other thoughts, words, and actions. After I’ve reestablished a peaceful context, I can more easily sort out scheduling, finances, and artistry in ways that at least maintain and even possibly enhance a peaceful state. What people, places, activities, and things help you renew or strengthen your inner peace connection? Some choose a noise-free place while others listen to serene music. A few hours’ vigorous outdoor labor can link all of me with inner peace the whole day. Activities that renew peace are many, varied and personal—handwriting a kind note, working a jigsaw puzzle, petting Fido or Whiskers, pruning a shrub, savoring the whole ten minutes’ color-texture extravaganza of a spectacular sunset. The simple principle is that our attitude makes each day what it actually becomes. Peace begets peace before, during, and after holiday festivities.

Q: My cats love catnip. Can you tell me

what it is that makes them act so funny?

A:

Catnip is perennial herb that was originally native to Asia and Europe. Presently, it also grows in North America. It was introduced to Canada and North America in the 1600’s by the colonists from Europe. It has had numerous medicinal uses throughout the decades. It has been used for headaches, insomnia, coughing, small pox, scarlet fever, chills, toothaches, joint pain and stomach upsets. It has antibacterial, astringent and antispasmodic properties, as well. The scientific name of catnip is Nepeta catarina, which belongs to the mint family, Lamiacae. This makes it a relative of the herbs basil and oregano. This plant can be grown easily indoors or out and reach heights of 3 feet or more. The chemical that is appealing to cats is an essential oil named Nepetalactone. It is a volatile oil that is found in the plants seeds, stems and leaves. Our feline friends can detect one part per billion of catnip in the air. As such, they are extremely sensitive to it. Not all cats are responsive or sensitive to catnip. In fact, it was found out that there is a genetic component to just which felines are affected. Approximately fifty to seventy percent of cats react to it. Genetically, this ability is inherited as an autosomal dominant gene. Consequently, the gene responsible only needs to be passed on from either the sire or dam, not both.

You only need to give a couple of pinches to your cat. It is easy to grow inside or outside your home. Drying it is simple. You can dry it by placing it in the oven on very very low heat. You can also hang the whole plant upside down in a dry, well ventilated room. If you grow it indoors your cats will munch on it as they want.

Q: With the holidays coming, I was

wondering if you could give some advice on basic tips to keep our pets safe.

A:

The holiday season can pose many hazards to pets. Many changes are happening and routines are disrupted both with humans and pets. You may be away from your pets more often due to business or personal reasons. They may get fed later or earlier than normal. You may have holiday decorations around your house. Friends or family may visit. The problem is that your pet’s routine is disrupted. Consequently, keeping their life routine and consistent will minimize stress levels. Holidays can bring with them gifts, candy, ribbons, tinsel, yarn, glass ornaments, Christmas trees, plants, flowers, candles, wrapping paper, presents, and even special holiday meals.

Certain human foods, if ingested by some pets, can result in serious, if not, fatal results. Many holiday foods, including gravies and skin When your cat detects and smells catnip, receptors in his olfactory from chicken or turkey can cause illness ranging from vomiting system send signals to his brain and results in the behaviors seen. and diarrhea to severe pancreatitis. allow your pets to drink the holiday tree water. The water can easily grow bacteria such as Salmonella, and potentially contain preservatives. Be careful with holiday globes that contains artificial snow and water, it can also cause toxicity. Many of these snow globes often contain antifreeze in their water, which is highly toxic to both dogs and cats. Be careful with decorations that contain fluid, as well as, ones made of glass. Tinsel is notorious for causing intestinal obstruction in cats. This generally requires surgery and the potential of resecting part of the intestinal tract. Keep all decorations in locations your pet cannot reach. This includes burning candles, which easily can be knocked over by a “happy wagging dog tail”. Keep wrapping paper in a safe location, as well as, plastic toys or toys that have small parts to them. Once again, obstruction

is a serious consideration. Be observant and attentive to your pets during holiday times and try to make it as pleasant for them as it is for you. Happy Holidays !!

Forget All The New Year’s Resolutions...But One Dr. Scott E. Rosenthal Do you stress over New Year’s Eve? There’s the pressure to find the right party, or spend a fortune on fancy clothes, booze and a full dinner spread. And the expectation to make it the BEST night of the year… on cue! There may be only one thing worse than all the New Year’s hoopla, and that’s the resolutions we make and rarely keep. You may be thinking, “This year will be different.” Just like The Little Engine That Could, you go charging up that big hill into the coming year with great ambitions. Fueled by your strong proclamations, January hits. Week number one, two, and three zip by. Woohoo, you’re doing it! Chugging even faster, a steady stream of smoke stains the sky marking your success. February hits. Your friends cheer as you cruise by tooting your horn of accomplishment. Impressed, their comments make you push even harder. “You look so much thinner, better, happier…” “You seem so in control, calmer, thinner (yeah, that one again)…”

yourself to do it. Feel a deep sense of deserving it—this is your gift to you! If your resolution changes you in a positive way that benefits loved ones (such as your improved health), do it for them as well. Write it down. Own it. Most importantly, pick just one (maybe two). You can always add the other one(s) on a later date. If you want even greater success with follow-through, there is a secret you should know. Forget the first of January and START NOW! By the way, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Then, The Little Engine That Could turns the corner and suddenly, it’s more like an old Western movie where the train is speeding toward a bridge that washed out. As quickly as your locomotive falls to the canyon floor, your New Year’s Resolutions crash and burn. That gut wrenching feeling of failure ensues and you’re back to your old ways. Not only do you stop doing what you set out to change, but now you do the complete opposite. Thankfully, your friends don’t point out that you now look stressed, out-of-control, and miserable. I’m not suggesting you shouldn’t resolve to better yourself or your current situation in the New Year. Rather, I am suggesting you do so in a more calculating, realistic way. WE’RE ALL GANDHI NOW Suzanne Eder As I write this, it is less than a week after the election. Countless good-hearted people are pleased with the outcome and looking forward to what they feel is much-needed change. Countless other good-hearted people are struggling to make sense of what is happening in our beloved country and to find a genuine sense of gratitude as we head into the holiday season. Many are trying earnestly to forge an optimistic perspective, even while feelings of shock, grief, fear and anger wash over them in waves. Others have tapped into a powerful core of resolve to be a potent force for good in our world, now more than ever. Still others are neutral observers, bearing witness to this unprecedented moment in human history and waiting to see what unfolds from here. No matter where you are or how you feel about recent events, chances are you’re acutely aware that we are in the midst of a seismic, dramatic and highly emotional shift. Yet this shift isn’t about changes in Congress or who lives in the White House. It’s not about the results of the election or the candidates who ran. It’s about us. It’s about a shift that is occurring in human consciousness. It is our consciousness that creates what we see and experience in the world. And we’re in the midst of shaking loose entrenched patterns from a fear-based consciousness as we shift into a new consciousness grounded in love. I realize how ridiculous that may sound, especially now. We are witnessing a profoundly disturbing level of loveless talk and action across the country. It is easy to feel horrified, angry, despairing – or all three. When we feel these things, we feel disempowered. And when we feel disempowered, we are unable to create the change we so deeply want. 16

This is why an understanding of human energy/consciousness is so vital. Because if we draw conclusions only from what we’re observing on the surface, with our five senses, we’ll miss the deeper meaning of what is going on. And what’s going on – if we choose to see it this way - is an awakening to the deeper truth of who we are. And who we are not. Ancient spiritual traditions, New Age and New Thought teachings and leading-edge quantum physicists inform us that one thing we definitely are not is separate. We are not separate from each other, from Nature or from the very Intelligence of Life itself. We are individuated beings within an interconnected Whole, a web or matrix or grid of pulsating energy that lives within us and all around us. We are connected not just through our relationships, our economy and our ecology, but through our very consciousness. We “feed into the grid,” as I think of it, with the quality or vibration of our thoughts, feelings, beliefs and actions – and our thoughts, feelings, beliefs and actions are, in turn, fed by the grid. Many people, right now, are ingesting large doses of fear from the grid. It is easy to feel overwhelmed, paralyzed and terrified of our future. And yet…it is also possible to make a conscious choice about how we’re feeling. This is the profound gift of free will. Just because we can be affected by the grid doesn’t mean we must be. Through our personal connection with the essence and the whole of Life – the Universe – the Divine – Spirit - God – whatever you call the unfathomable love, power and intelligence that created this universe and everything in it - we

each have the ability to generate the vibrations that nourish us and send nourishment into the grid.

our political arena and in our lives is because of the strength of our collective intention to live in peace, harmony, respect and cooperation.

In truth, the intentions for respect, peace and harmony we’ve been feeding into the grid for decades have been catalysts for the shake-up we’re now experiencing. By feeding these intentions into the grid, any dissimilar or discordant vibrations have been made more obvious by contrast. They’ve been shaken up. This is the same dynamic that occurs when any one of us individually sets a clear intention for positive change in our lives.

Our powerful intentions are shifting human consciousness, and in that shift all of the old fear-based vibrations have become clearly evident. Rather than rumbling just below the surface of our awareness, where they are easy to ignore, they are now in full view so we can see them for what they are: expressions of who we are not.

I often give clients who are committed to shifting an old fearbased pattern, but frustrated when evidence of the pattern surfaces again, this mantra: “If it’s showing up, it’s moving up.” I want them to understand that the very act of intending to dissolve an old pattern will usually make it more visible. That gives us the opportunity to see it clearly for what it is – an expression of who we are not - and choose not to engage with it. Not to buy into it. Not to judge or defend it. Instead, we open our hearts, reach for higher ground and let it go. That same dynamic exists within the whole of human consciousness. See if you can feel the truth of this: the very fact that hatred and fear and suspicion have risen to the surface in

They’re showing up, which means they’re moving up - and out - as long as we don’t engage with them. And by engaging with them I mean judging them, condemning them or giving our power to them in fear. This doesn’t mean we won’t feel angry, judgmental or fearful. We probably will, and many of us already do. It means we make the choice to fully feel our feelings, to honor them as part of our lifeforce energy, and rather than using them to push against what we don’t want – which perpetuates conflict – we harness them in service of what we do want. Through the power of our loving, peaceful and focused intentions, we bring our emotions into alignment with our highest visions for humanity. We vibrate in a coherent way that feeds our intentions into the grid. Rather than allowing ourselves to be affected by the discordant vibrations of hatred and suspicion that are being

shaken up right now, we instead affect others by flooding the grid with vibrations of love, respect and compassion. This is not an airy-fairy notion. It is a powerful act of transformation, because Love is infinitely more powerful than anything other than love. Love is infinitely more powerful than anything other than love. And of course love has many facets. It is kind, compassionate and inclusive, yet it is also powerful, focused and vibrant with conviction. It is soft and enveloping, yet when needed it is firm and incisive. The unifying principle is that Love elevates the Whole and each of us – all of us – to our highest good. So let’s feed Love into the grid. Every time you treat a family member, colleague, acquaintance or stranger with kindness and respect, you’re feeding Love into the grid. Every time you choose to listen and learn rather than argue, you’re feeding Love into the grid. Every time you feel angry or terrified or overwhelmed and you pause to feel your feelings with self-compassion, without immediately acting on them, you’re feeding Love into the grid. Every time you soothe yourself or someone else, you’re feeding Love into the grid. And every time you stand up for your desire for a loving, peaceful world, you’re feeding Love into the grid. Every time you speak your truth with clarity and respect, you’re feeding Love into the grid. Every time you’re willing to be seen and heard as a representative of fairness, balance and compassionate justice, you’re feeding Love into the grid. Every time you choose to harness the pure energy of your anger to move you toward what you want, rather than using it to push against what you don’t want, you’re feeding Love into the grid.

We’re all Gandhi now. We’re called to literally be the change we wish to see in the world. Now is our time to stand so firmly in the heart-centered truth of who we are, we cannot easily be swept into currents of fear. We, instead, strengthen and stabilize the unstoppable force of Love that gave rise to this transformation to begin with. I understand this does not feel easy. At times, it doesn’t even seem possible. I also understand that we must give ourselves the time we need to acknowledge and feel all of our feelings, and to sort out where we stand. I know that the enormity of what is happening, and the intensity of the almost unimaginable hatred we have witnessed, can seem truly overwhelming. That’s why we need to keep reminding ourselves and each other of this vital truth: Love is infinitely more powerful than anything other than love. We don’t need to wait for any system or any person to change before we can effect change. We’re having an empowering effect with our very Presence in this moment. Right now, we can fortify the grid of human consciousness with the only true, lasting power in this universe. We can do this. We are doing this. Now is our time.

After seeding the grid with our highest intentions for decades, let’s not stop now. Let’s intensify our efforts. Let’s not allow the inevitable chaos of a changing paradigm to confuse, paralyze or deter us. Let’s trust more, not less, in our true power to effect change, regardless of who is in the White House.

SMOKELESS

Storz & Bickel The Crafty

Once a patient is issued a medical marijuana license for their particular medical condition, the benefits often seem defeated by needing to subject themselves to ingesting smoke. This could be especially difficult for a person who has never smoked before, potentially making them feel worse than prior to treatment. However, there is an alternative to lighting up, a vaporizer. Vaporizers are available in several different shapes, sizes, functionalities, and prices, all of which may be a matter of personal preferences. There are several aspects to take into consideration before purchasing a vaporizer. That is why, using dried herbs, LWM staff members tested 3 of the top vaporizers on the market in order to review them and share the results.

125ml (4fl oz) buttermilk 2 tbsp red food colouring paste For the filling 250g (9 oz) cream cheese, at room temperature 70g (2½ oz) golden caster sugar 2 tbsp lemon juice 2 tbsp warm water 1½ tsp gelatine powder 300ml (½ pint) double cream For the frosting 250g (9 oz) cream cheese, at room temperature 60g (2¼ oz) butter, softened 85g (3 oz) icing sugar, sifted ¼ tsp vanilla bean paste Preheat the oven to 180°C (fan 160°C)/350°F/gas mark 4. Grease a 20cm (8in) diameter deep cake tin with butter and line the base with baking paper. In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Sift the self-raising flour, plain flour, cocoa powder and bicarbonate of soda together, then stir the flour mixture and buttermilk, in alternating batches, into the butter mixture. Stir in the food colouring. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and bake in the oven for 35–40 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. To make the filling, beat the cream cheese, sugar and lemon juice together in a bowl until smooth. Put the 2 tablespoons water into a heatproof jug and add the gelatine. Place the jug in a saucepan and add boiling water to come halfway up the side of the jug. Stir until the gelatine dissolves (if it seizes, stir gently over a low heat until it dissolves). Pour into the filling and beat until combined. Whip the cream to soft peaks, then fold into the cream cheese mixture. Cut the cooled cake in half horizontally and trim the top to level it, reserving the trimmings for decoration. Brush a 20cm (8in) diameter springform cake tin with oil. Line the base and sides with clingfilm, allowing it to overhang the sides. Put the cake base, cut side up, into the tin and spread with the filling. Sandwich together with the remaining cake. Fold over the clingfilm and leave to set in the refrigerator overnight. To make the frosting, beat the cream cheese, butter, icing sugar and vanilla paste together in a bowl until well combined. Turn the cake out on to a serving plate and spread the frosting over the top and sides. Decorate with the reserved sponge crumbs.

Serves 12 | Preparation time: 25 minutes, plus cooling | Cooking time: 2–2½ hours

Clementine and Pomegranate Cake This is my alternative to a Christmas cake. It’s really stunning, with beautiful jewel-like pomegranate seeds that look like rubies. This is a very moist cake and uses whole fruits to ensure it is packed with festive flavours… it also happens to be gluten and dairy free! 4 clementines or satsumas, unpeeled 1 cinnamon stick oil, for greasing 6 large eggs 225g (8 oz) light muscovado sugar 1 tsp gluten-free baking powder 300g (10½ oz) ground almonds

into a medium saucepan, cover with cold water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat, cover with a lid and simmer for 1–1½ hours, then drain the fruit and remove the cinnamon stick. Leave to cool for 30 minutes, then halve the cooked fruit and discard the pips. Put the fruit, including the peel, into a blender or food processor and blend to a purée. Set aside. Preheat the oven to 180°C (fan 160°C)/350°F/gas mark 4. Grease a 23cm (9in) diameter, 9cm (3½in) deep cake tin and line with baking paper. Using an electric hand whisk, whisk the eggs and sugar in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of barely simmering water for about 5 minutes until pale and mousselike. Take the bowl off the heat and add the baking powder, ground almonds and the fruit purée. Fold in gently but thoroughly. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and bake in the oven for 20 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 160°C (fan 140°C)/325°F/gas mark 3 and bake for a further 30 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin for 15 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.

For the syrup 1 pomegranate, halved 25g (1 oz) light muscovado sugar 1 tsp orange blossom extract 1 tsp vanilla bean paste To decorate 3 tbsp apricot glaze (see Tip on page 94) icing sugar, for dusting

To make the syrup, squeeze the pomegranate halves to extract the juice, reserving the seeds, then pour the juice into a small saucepan. Add the sugar and bring to the boil, then simmer for 2 minutes. Leave to cool slightly (the liquid should still be warm), then stir in the orange blossom extract and vanilla paste. Using a pastry brush, ‘soak’ the cake with the warm pomegranate syrup and leave in the tin until completely cold. Remove the cold cake from the tin and place on a serving plate. Brush the apricot glaze all over the cake, including the sides. Just before serving, scatter the reserved pomegranate seeds over the top of the cake and dust with icing sugar. Image on next page.

Place the sultanas, currants, raisins, prunes, mixed peel, almonds and brandy in a bowl and allow to soak for at least 4 hours. Place the butter, brown sugar and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer and beat until light and creamy. Gradually add the eggs and beat well. Transfer the butter mixture to a large bowl. Add the fruit mixture, flour, cinnamon, mixed spice, breadcrumbs and milk and mix with a wooden spoon until well combined. Wearing rubber gloves, dip the calico in boiling water and carefully squeeze to remove any excess water. While the cloth is still hot, rub in the extra flour to form a skin around the pudding. Place the fruit mixture in the middle and gather up the ends of the cloth firmly around it. Tie the cloth with kitchen string as close to the mixture as possible, making a loop at the end of the string. Place the pudding in a saucepan of boiling water and boil for 4 hours 30 minutes, adding more water if necessary. Remove the pudding from the pan and hang on a broomstick over a sink. Allow to cool. Store in the fridge for up to 2 months. To reheat, boil for 45 minutes and drain for 5 minutes. Unwrap and serve with brandy and vanilla custard or brandy butter (on page 50 in book). Serves 12. Brandy and Vanilla Custard 2 tablespoons cornflour (cornstarch) 3 cups (24 fl oz) (single or pouring) cream 1/4 cup (2 fl oz) brandy 1 split, scraped vanilla bean (see glossary in book) 6 egg yolks 1/3 cup caster (superfine) sugar

Donna Hay is Australia’s leading food editor and best-selling cookbook author.

Mix the cornflour with a little of the cream until smooth. Set aside. Heat the cream, brandy and vanilla bean and seeds in a pan over medium heat until warm. Whisk together the yolks and sugar. Remove the vanilla bean and slowly whisk the egg and the cornflour mixtures into the cream mixture. Stir over low heat for 4 minutes or until thick. Makes 3 1/2 cups (28 fl oz). Image on next page.

Wind Evil: The Chief of Illness

Dr. Kelly Brown

Cold Season

Wind Combinations

The temperature is dropping outside with winter starting soon. Cold season is also upon us. In our culture, illness is due to a viral or bacterial infection. Germs can spread easily between people in homes and offices. Soon, the coughing and sniffling becomes overwhelming!

Wind, as mentioned above, can combine with other evils and change to give individual illness indicators. Chinese medicine looks at the constitution of a person to determine how the progression of disease occurs. For example, a person who is considered warm can have a wind with cold invasion that transforms into wind with heat. Wind heat has hot signs with fever, sweating, and a red, sore throat. Conversely, wind cold symptoms can include avoidance of cold, chills, and no sweating.

Chinese Medicine and Illness In Chinese medicine, illness is caused by a combination of factors. These can include external attacks, internal imbalances, or emotions. External or excess causes of disease can come in six ways – wind, cold, dampness, dryness, fire, and summer-heat. These are also referred to as the six evils. Excesses frequently happen together, such as wind and cold or wind and heat. Wind is considered the “chief ” of illnesses. Wind Evil In China, wind is considered more a springtime weather factor, but it can happen most of the year. Wind, as an evil, can enter through the nose or skin and can introduce other external factors into the body. The fluctuating temperatures we’ve had recently have provided plenty of gusts. Remember when your mother would tell you that you may get sick going out in the cold with wet hair? Wind and dampness can combine and lead to illness. There is an area on the upper back/base of your neck called Feng Men or wind gate. Protecting this area on windy and cold days is important to prevent wind, and other pathogens, from invading your system. Wear a scarf on windy days!

Treatment for Wind Early treatments for wind invasion with Chinese medicine are to release the exterior. In other words, help the defensive Qi to expel the pathogen before it becomes internal. As the external converts to internal, specific symptoms are taken into account. If there is cold and nasal congestion, acupuncture works to warm the cold and open the sinus passages. Alternatively, if there is heat with sore throat, the treatment method is to clear heat and soothe the throat. All acupuncture treatments are patient specific. The same illness often receives a different treatment. Prevention The best way to treat a cold is still to prevent one in the first place. Wear a scarf to protect the wind gate, dress appropriately for the weather, wash your hands frequently, and drink plenty of fluids. Acupuncture can help to balance your system to help block wind invasion. Schedule an appointment today to stay healthy this winter!

Wind Attack When wind has invaded the body, the defensive Qi or Wei Qi tries to fight the evil at the surface. Fever and sweating happen as the pores try to expel the pathogen. Wind in nature is moving and can stir things up. Therefore, wandering aches, headaches, and dizziness can be other signals of wind invasion. Additional symptoms can include cough, scratchy throat, and nasal congestion. Together, these symptoms sound a lot like what our culture calls the common cold. 34

HANDS ON HEALTH by: Ann Wilkinson P.T.M.S,

Q:

My doctor recently changed my cholesterol medicine because I was experiencing muscular pain. Concurrently, I have been doing alot of yard work, such as raking leaves, and I am having severe neck pain. How can I tell if the pain is related to the physical exertion or if it caused by a reaction to the new medication?

A: Q:

I love Yoga. Recently, I took a class focused on hip opening and I may have pushed too far. I am limping and if I turn my leg out pain is on the inside and outside of the hip. How do I handle my recovery so that I can go back to yoga?

A:

First, I would ensure that the pelvis was in alignment. Additionally, I would make sure there are no rotations and the Sacroiliac joint which is the attachment of the spine to the pelvis is in the proper position. I would myofascially release all the associated muscles of the pelvis and hip joint followed by specific joint mobilization of the acetabular joint.(the ball and socket joint) Because the pain is on the “in and outside” of the hip and aggravated by the abducted position, I would also assess the pubic bone and the alignment of the junction of those two bones. Muscle energy techniques are helpful in the pelvis and pubic area. This technique allows the use of the patients muscle strength to influence the position of bones by asking the patient to squeeze or push in a way that causes movement. This is an area that is very hard to ice. The overstretched tissues are likely deep. Homeopathic Arnica, Traumeel or Arnica cream topically can delve far deeper. Return to yoga slowly, avoiding the postures of possible injury for a while and adding them back gradually and gently. In India, they do Yoga with a different mind set than we do. I have been in classes in Yoga in India that we only did 4-5 postures in an hour. Be gentle, calm, introspective and very aware when practicing Yoga, doing the postures at home and in between classes will help to keep you supple for class. One high intensity class per week is probably not the most ideal if you are not practicing at home on your own in between. Feel free to maintain your range rather than constantly push for more. When practicing Yoga do it from an Indian perspective of peace rather than competing with yourself to be able to wrap your leg behind you and stand on one arm at the same time. These poses are impressive. However, I was once told by a guru that the most important posture in Yoga is Savasina, (dead man pose), lying perfectly still. ALL the other postures prepare you for this one.

My first thought is to investigate natural methods for reducing your cholesterol so that over time, working with your doctor, you can reduce the amount of statin that you take. Ultimately, I would like to see a goal of no medication and allow your body to regulate itself with the help of natural remedies and diet. This is easier said than done, and it would be wise to seek the guidance of a well rounded medical team. The help of an osteopath would dovetail nicely on the lead of your medical doctor. Not only for the natural remedies, but bodywork can be helpful for a few reasons. Even if the medicine is causing your muscles to function improperly, resulting in more pain with routine daily exercises, body work can help move lactic acid build up and help elongate the tissues. It could very well be that you have postural deviations and compensations underlying. Any change in muscle chemistry can cause that imbalance to be more pronounced. Balancing the pelvis, providing symmetry to the pelvic structures and decompression of the spine will help lymph channels blood vessels and nerves clear passage and decreased resistance to flow of body fluids and also nerve conduction. Craniosacral therapy rights the head bones also enhancing function of the brain and autonomic nervous system. Craniosacral balancing makes everything feel better. It is possible that you would be able to gradually get off medication with bodywork, herbal, homeopathic and dietary replacements. It will take time, effort, commitment and patience. Your doctor can track your progress and adjust medication accordingly.

THE POWER OF MEANING

Joe White

Here are 5 powerful but simple questions that One of the foundations to create huge and lasting breakthroughs will help you change meaning and change your life. in a short amount of time comes from 3 major presuppositions. When does someone really change?

3) All patterns meet a set of emotional needs. An event or trigger has no meaning unto itself. Meaning comes from the individual. Meaning is subjective. It comes from our subconscious maps that are shaped by our lives and most importantly are not always accurate. Yet, the Achilles heel is that we most often think that meaning is fact. The reasoning behind this is because it feels like it is real. The meaning we give any event becomes the cornerstone of the stories we tell ourselves to describe the relationship between the event and the meaning. That meaning in turn shapes how we feel and our behaviors that produce results. Many times we try to change by changing our actions and behaviors. Sounds logical; but really that is willpower. Can it work? Yes, but it is rarely duplicable and is very inefficient. In other words, willpower is hard. There are easier and more efficient ways.

2) Is that meaning 100% beyond a shadow of doubt true? (HINT: The answer is always no.) 3) What is a different meaning that I could give it? 4) What is a new and empowering meaning that I can give it that will help me to move forward? 5) What are some simple actions I must take so that I can move forward now? Until next month, I wish you love and passion. Live Free!

If you really want to change you must start by changing the meaning you have given to that event. That is where it all begins. Remember, nothing in life has any meaning other than the meaning you have given it. If its meaning does not serve you, then you must change its definition..

Homemade Holiday Aphrodisiacs

Dr. Dianna Palimere

There are a countless books and websites devoted to herbs and foods known to have benefits for sexual health. Simply put, an aphrodisiac is any food or drink which stimulates sexual desire. Sometimes, this may be accomplished by increasing blood flow in the body, causing increased sensitivity to the genitals; or increasing certain hormones in the body which affect desire, stamina, and/or energy; or simply relaxing the body and helping us to de-stress and clear our minds of needless distractions. With the right combination of ingredients, there are endless possibilities for creating homemade concoctions to enhance feelings of romance, love, passion, or excitement! This month, I chose a few of my favorite recipes for those who are looking for a creative and adventurous alternative for spicing things up this holiday season! In my search for aphrodisiac cocktails, one of the most popular ones that seemed to come up in the search was a port-wine based recipe called Hippocras. The ingredients include: red burgundy port, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, vanilla and sugar. Maria Kirk’s blog, “Gastronomy Archaeology” had the best description of both the history of the drink, and a step-by-step recipe for making it by the pint (a scaled downed version of the original recipe from John Partridge’s The treasurie of commodious conceits, & hidden secrets (1573). Note that it does have to sit for at least 24 hours after you make it. If you’re interested in the culinary side of edible aphrodisiacs, Tori Avey’s website has several amazing options. (see www.toriavey. com and look for the edible aphrodisiacs, in the kitchen history section). She notes, “Honey contains Boron, which may regulate hormone levels and nitric oxide, which is released in the blood during arousal.” There are a variety of recipes which include the use of honey. Go to: toriavey.com For the complete recipes for Challah Brushetta with Lemon, Ricotta and Honey, and Tory Avery’s Fig & Honey Cocktail Recipe. Raw honey is recommended to get the most benefit (Honeyland’s 100% Pure Raw Unfiltered Honey Comb is a great choice and is available on Amazon.com(if you can’t find it at your local grocer). Ancient Greek and Roman civilizations used honey for stamina, both in the bedroom and in physical competition (recommended “dose” is two spoonfuls at bedtime, or before entering the arena). Another noteworthy ingredient is the Fig. “Figs are good restoratives; they improve energy levels in those who feel fatigued, boosting fertility and libido” (Mars, 2010, p.21). For this reason, recipes that include both figs and honey are a wonderful choice— and what better than a Fig & Honey Cocktail? —you’ll want to make a pitcher of these! See recipe on the next page For the more advanced herbal apothecary, the Herbal Academy’s

Four Easy Care Gardening Trends for the Holiday Season

Melinda Myers

Dress up the holidays or give gifts that continue giving throughout the year with these low maintenance gardening trends. Just add a little fun, classic beauty or style to make it even more memorable now and throughout the year.

Air Plants. Unique and amazing air plants are all the rage and could certainly be described as the definitive easy care plant. Many are native to rain forests where they grow in the canopy of trees, gathering water and nutrients that pass by. No soil is needed for these versatile plants. Just hang them in a bright location and soak in tepid non-softened water once every week or two.

Terrariums. These mini greenhouses continue to grow in popularity and are perfect for new or timid gardeners. Just plant a few small tropical plants, moisten the soil, close the lid and you have a self contained growing chamber. Show off your green thumb with a modern, classic or vintage style vessel.

Display them in an open terrarium, shell, or another decorative container. They make great centerpieces or stunning displays.

Use the Gazebo Tabletop terrarium, classic bell jar or other mini garden as a centerpiece for the dining table or buffet. Or create a miniature garden in glass to give as a hostess gift. When the party is over, it’s a great memento of a fun holiday gathering.

Succulents. Growing succulents is another low maintenance garden trend that is perfect for busy gardeners during the hectic holiday season. Just place them in a sunny window and water whenever the soil is dry. It’s truly as easy as that. The small scale cacti and succulents provide a multitude of opportunities for incorporating them into your holiday celebrations. You won’t need much space to enjoy the subtle colors and dramatic form of these drought tolerant plants. Just select containers that complement, but don’t overpower their charm.

Pothos, Philodendron and Ivy. These plants have long been low maintenance favorites of the indoor garden. This year, consider dressing them up for the holidays with sparkling garland, artificial flowers, berries and greens. Or display them in unique containers, baskets or hangers. Go retro and macramé a colorful hanger for your favorite hanging basket. Or place the pot in an earthy woven basket, sleek plastic pot or classic Round Copper Wire Globe hanging basket. Add some fairy lights for a bit more sparkle on long winter nights. Make this holiday season warm and memorable with the help of these low maintenance garden trends and plants. You, your family and friends will enjoy their beauty, charm and easy care nature throughout the new year ahead.

Consider buying a few extras for guests to take home and enjoy for years to come. But first, use them to dress up the table by making them into place cards for your guests. Simply add a name to the decorative pot. Or display them all together in a copper plant tray (gardeners. com), terra cotta saucer or other shallow container to use as a centerpiece throughout the evening.
