“Be “Mine”-dful of Health on Valentine’s Day Cassandra Umile, R.D., L.D.N.

Valentine's Day is all about taking a moment to appreciate the people in our lives who matter to us most. What better way to say "I love you" than to plan a day that keeps health and wellness in mind? Whether February 14th will involve time spent with a significant other, best friend, parent, spouse or even just yourself, we're sure you'll enjoy this list of our favorite Valentine's Day activities, treats, and recipes: 1. Choose an activity that supports your healthy lifestyle like skiing, ice skating, building a snowman, taking a walk through a park, heading to a spa, going rock climbing (indoors if the weather is still cold and snowy), or volunteering for a local charity. 2. If you're going out to a restaurant, consider sharing. In most restaurants today, appetizers, entrees, and even desserts tend to be large enough for two (if not more!). So, sharing with your loved one allows you to both enjoy the courses you love without all the calories.

3. Consider cooking a healthy meal at home featuring lots of fresh vegetables, a lean protein, whole grains and perhaps a fruit-based dessert (dark chocolate drizzled strawberries, anyone?). Using smaller plates, larger utensils and tall, skinny glasses all trick your eyes into thinking you're indulging in more than you truly are. 4. Give your loved one a gift that isn't so food-focused. Some ideas include flowers, a hand-written card or poem, a nice at-home spa package (bubble bath, relaxing music, a new robe), or tickets to a concert, botanical garden, or other venue that you enjoy visiting together.

6. For anyone who has a loved one with food sensitivities, intolerances or allergies, play it safe. Choose a restaurant that will take the sensitivity seriously or opt for a romantic home-cooked meal. Some delicious recipe ideas include a mixed greens salad tossed in a homemade vinaigrette (try whisking together 2 tbsp. olive oil, 2 tsp balsamic vinegar, and ⅓ tsp Dijon mustard), broiled salmon sprinkled with fresh lemon juice over a bed of fluffy quinoa and a vegan chocolate mousse made by pureeing 1 ripe avocado, ⅓ cup cocoa powder, 2-3 tbsp. pure maple syrup, and 1 tsp vanilla (garnish with fresh berries for an added treat).

Happy Valentine's Day! 5. If your significant other has a sweet tooth and you want to treat them, choose a small square of high-quality dark chocolate. A smaller portion will still be a treat, without being too overwhelming or tempting. The dark chocolate will provide fiber and antioxidants to balance the fat and calories…a little bit, at least!

words from the editors and publishers:

We’re going to the Super Bowl! Well, we may not physically be on our way to Minnesota, but the Philadelphia Eagles – after overcoming incredible adversity – are headed to the NFL Super Bowl after a dominating performance at the Linc. For Eagles fans, this is a watershed moment. One that, unlike our counterparts in New England (where my younger son lives and works, but still bleeds green), is a rarity for the City of Philadelphia and its fans. For those of you that aren’t Football crazed, the Eagles’ season is still one for you to marvel about – one that offers life lessons about perseverance and hard-work. This is a young team. A second-year head coach. A second-year QB. New and veteran teammates from all over the country and world. As the season progressed, this team found ways to persevere, despite injuries sidelining some of the team’s best players, including the City’s new football hero: Carson Wentz. In typical Philadelphia fashion, we watched our beloved Eagles win in nail-biting fashion, then lose a few they should have won. But at the end of it all, they found a ways to succeed. It was a long season, with ups and downs. It reminded us that people can come together and work-through difficult times. People can lean on each other for support, then offer that very same support to another person when it is their turn to carry the load. We here at LWM think this Philadelphia Eagles team is symbolic of how a community should behave: Come together for common purposes; Fight for great causes; Support someone when they are down; Support someone when it is their turn to step-up; Learn from mistakes; Make a difference. So, football fan or not, find ways to embrace what this Philadelphia team taught us this year. And for the rest of those that are not football fan than you will especially enjoy this month’s Living Well Magazine. This issue of LWM you’ll find great recipes from, The Turmeric Cookbook that are perfect for one, two, or a tailgate party, and yummy oh so Valentine chocolate cupcakes to end the meal. LWM is filled with love sharing Valentine’s Day ideas and gifts to treat yourself or your significant other on that special day. Speaking of Valentine’s Day one of our advertisers has a very unique gift idea. Steve’s Sew N Vac on Kirkwood Hwy recommends buying a new Vacuum Cleaner for the love of your life, but before you get really mad, he is going to give you a $50.00 gift card for dinner too! Some restrictions apply. So, while everyone else is watching the Super Bowl, you can curl up with a favorite beverage and enjoy the latest LWM. —Enjoy & Share Everything! Brian and Diane Strauss

FYI Save Money at Costco by knowing the code In the words of the site AddictedtoCostco. com, ‘the last two digits of the price can tell you a lot.’ For starters, any item whose price ends with a nine is regularly priced merchandise, so it’s likely that you’re not getting much more bang for your buck. Don’t bother with these things that are actually more expensive at Costco, either.

" FLY EAGLES FLY! '

Meanwhile, items ending with $0.97 are general markdowns, so stock up. And if a price tag ends in $0.88 or an even dollar, the item has been marked down by a local manager who wants to clear a product from his or her store. At Sam’s Club, look for anything that ends in a penny — such as $19.91 or $4.41 — or anything marked with a ‘C’ for clearance. BJ’s will clearly tell you on the label when they mark down.

Support Go Red For Women by participating in National Wear Red Day® and donate to help fund research during American Heart Month. Why Go Red? Cardiovascular disease in the U.S. kill approximately one woman every 80 seconds. The good news is that 80 percent of cardiac events may be prevented with education and lifestyle changes. Go Red For Women advocates for more research and swifter action for women’s heart health. That’s why this year we are asking that you wear red on National Wear Red Day® and Donate to Go Red For Woman. By doing so you help support educational programs to increase women’s awareness and critical research to discover scientific knowledge about cardiovascular health.

In 2003, the American Heart Association and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute took action against a disease that was claiming the lives of nearly 500,000 American women each year – a disease that women weren’t paying attention to. A disease they truly believed, and many still believe to this day, affects more men than women. Go Red For Women is a movement that starts with you. Lead by example and make the time to “Know Your Numbers.” It’s knowledge that could save your life. Five numbers, that all women should know to take control of their heart health are: Total Cholesterol, HDL (good) Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar and Body Mass Index (BMI). Knowing these numbers can help women and their healthcare provider determine their risk for developing cardiovascular diseases. It’s time for all women to learn the most critical numbers in their life — their hearts depend on it.

Can’t Get A Good Night’s Sleep? Your dentist may be able to help Dr. Andrew Swiatowicz

You’d be surprised by the number of my patients who tell me they fall asleep while driving. My first question for them is whether they’ve ever been tested for sleep apnea. Many of them tell me that they have been tested for it, and have been diagnosed with this condition. So why aren’t they sleeping? Because many people hate those clunky machines most doctors use to treat sleep apnea. My patients are surprised when I tell them that those clunky machines aren’t the only way to treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). In fact, one of the recent breakthroughs in sleep medicine has been made by dentists who realized they could effectively treat OSA with a simple, tiny appliance, kind of like a retainer. Screening for and treating obstructive sleep apnea has become an integral part of my dental practice. While some people know they have OSA and choose not to get help because they aren’t aware of the available treatment options, many others have no clue they have the condition. Of the 29 million Americans suffering from OSA, 80% of those remain undiagnosed. Obstructive sleep apnea is essentially a physical blockage of the airway, which prevents you from breathing in oxygen while you sleep. Your brain is telling you to breathe, and the muscles that contract to bring in air are working, but oxygen can’t get into your lungs because your pharynx has become severely narrowed. The soft tissues of your upper airway collapse and seal off the throat, preventing any movement of air into the lungs. When this happens, you’ll suddenly wake yourself, usually with a sudden gasp. This can happen anywhere from a few times a night to dozens of times per hour. This process prevents people 12

suffering from OSA from ever getting a complete night’s sleep, leaving them physically and mentally tired when they get out of bed in the morning. That’s why so many people, like my patients, complain of falling asleep behind the wheel. So, you might think, what’s really the big deal about OSA? If my body wakes itself up to make sure I continue breathing, then why should I see a dentist for treatment? Here’s the thing. OSA affects your entire body. You’re a whole person, after all. Some of the conditions associated with OSA include obesity, type 2 diabetes, acid reflux, depression, high blood pressure, stroke, and congestive heart failure. It can also cause you to grind your teeth while you sleep, which can result in broken teeth, headaches, muscle pain, and damage to the jaw joint (TMJ). The most alarming statistic, however, is that 46% of those with OSA have an increased risk of early death. Adults aren’t the only ones who suffer from OSA. A multitude of conditions are linked to OSA in children, such as asthma, swollen tonsils, depression, and bed wetting. A 2013 study showed that ADHD is linked to sleep disordered breathing [SDB] in children, and treatment of the SDB improved ADHD symptoms without medication. In fact, the study suggested that in patients with both ADHD and suspected SDB, the children should be treated for their sleeping conditions before any medication for ADHD is prescribed. Most people are surprised to know that their dentist can help them treat their medical condition — after all, we’re supposed to only work on your teeth, right? Wrong. As I always tell my patients, dentists don’t treat teeth; we treat whole patients. We can treat your OSA by making a dental appliance that holds your jaw forward, which will pull the tongue off the back of your throat, and expand your upper airway. By removing the obstruction, you’ll breathe more readily at night, and wake up refreshed and healthier.

The gold standard for treating OSA is a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine. A patient secures a mask to her face and it forces air through the obstruction of the airway, kind of like blowing up a balloon. However, many people who try CPAP cannot tolerate the pressure of the air and choose not to wear it as instructed, or what’s worse they stop wearing it at all. In fact, wearing your CPAP for just four hours a night is considered to be in compliance - and yet even with those low standards, up to 83% of CPAP patients are not wearing their devices as prescribed. We know that CPAP works, but we also know that the therapeutic effectiveness of oral appliances is comparable to CPAP. In other words, both devices are capable of treating OSA. It’s just that, one of them fits discreetly in your mouth, and the other one covers most of your face and can be disruptive to your sleep partner. Plus, it makes you look like Bane from Batman which you may or may not think is a bad thing. If you have OSA and want to try an alternative to CPAP, talk to your physician about finding a dentist to treat you. When looking for a dentist to treat your OSA, it’s vitally important to make sure they are well trained. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) recommend you be treated by a qualified dentist, who meets their criteria of education and treatment standards. Sometimes side effects can arise during treatment, and a qualified dentist will be able to effectively and immediately respond to those. Check with your dentist before your visit to see if they have the ability to bill your medical insurance. Most dentists with an AADSM qualification can. Since OSA is a medical condition, it must be billed to medical insurance, and cannot be billed to any dental insurance – no matter what your dentist tells you. To be clear, no dentist can diagnose sleep apnea. That takes a qualified physician. A good dentist should be willing to work and communicate with your physician. Treating OSA is a team effort that requires the cooperation of a patient, their medical doctor, and their dentist. The end result is the successful management of OSA. The world can be a noisy and hectic place —you deserve a good night’s sleep. Dr. Andrew Swiatowicz is the owner of Delaware Dental Sleep Medicine. He has been treating patients with obstructive sleep apnea since he was in dental school. Dr. Swiatowicz is the only AADSM qualified dentist in the state of Delaware. www.livingwellmagazine.net

{Happiness breeds happiness.}

As you work on becoming the best version of yourself, one of three things will happen: you will develop such inner strength, resilience and confidence that your partner finds you even more desirable; or you may come to a place of realizing that this person wasn’t the one after all; or perhaps you both discover that there is work to be done both individually and together as a couple to strengthen and deepen the love and intimacy in your relationship.

How to Find (or Keep) the Love of Your Life It’s hearts and flowers month (a.k.a. Valentine’s Day). A special time of year when people are particularly hard on themselves if they aren’t in a relationship or hypercritical of their relationship as they compare it to what they see being displayed as “true love” all around them. The sad irony of this holiday that is meant to promote love and romance is that it frequently promotes the opposite. There is an uptick in sales of books like, “How to Find a Man” or “How to Make Any Woman Want You.” Commercials and advertisements for dating websites offer free trial periods, luring people in with claims about the number of relationships and marriages of people who have used their site. Online dating sites and dating apps are now a $3 billion industry. Clearly, people are desperate for ways to find (and keep) the one. From time to time, I’ll read the latest, greatest book about dating and how to find and keep the man/woman of your dreams. There’s a disturbing trend wherein books which are geared toward male readers seem to have a focus on how to attract a variety of women; and books geared toward female readers focus on how to “get a man and keep a man.” I could go on for days about these kinds of books and how the majority of them are based on “playing the game” and “creating a persona” to get that ideal person. The obvious problem with this is that once you’ve gotten them, how long can you keep up the charade? A relationship built on false 14

with Dianna Palimere

pretenses is doomed from the start (unless you’re the main protagonist in an 80’s movie where the one learns to love you for the REAL you; but unfortunately, you’re not). These kinds of relationships wind up being very, very short, ending after the first sleepover; or maybe they last for a week or two until it just fizzles out and you never hear from the person again. That being said, I’ve found that there are some actual nuggets of wisdom thrown in there—some more than others. For example, the advice to go out and try new things, create new hobbies and interests…is great advice. Just ignore the second half of that sentence which usually ends with something like, “because no matter how good looking you are, if you’re not interesting to talk to, they’ll just get bored and move on.” Trying new things and creating new interests and hobbies is for you. It will make you a happier, more creative, more fulfilled person. It will help you meet other people who share similar interests, create new friendships, and who knows—you may even meet someone there who you might like to date. And, for those who are already in a committed relationship, cultivating your own hobbies and friendships will likely strengthen your relationship. Not only will you have new and interesting experiences to share with them, but you will have a source of happiness that is completely separate from them.

Happiness breeds happiness. That may sound like it belongs on a t-shirt or bumper sticker, but there is scientific research that supports this phenomenon. Neuroscientists have discovered what they call mirror neurons in our brain to explain why there is an instinctual or reflexive response to another’s emotional state. A simple example is smiling at a baby and it mirrors the facial expression and smiles back. When this occurs in a group, it is referred to as a “ripple effect.” Essentially, our emotions, attitudes and behaviors effects those around us as the mirror neurons in their brain instinctually respond and (to some degree) mimic the experience. Imagine a time when the sound of someone’s laughter caused you to smile or laugh, even if you didn’t know what they were laughing about. It’s a ripple effect. Thus, happier people are literally more attractive to be around, because they promote feelings of happiness in others. As cliché as it sounds, you have to love yourself before you can love someone else. If you’re not currently in a relationship, turn your focus inward. Do you love yourself? Have you cultivated a life that supports you being the best version of yourself? If not, now is the time for you to do so. Think about the person you want to be and what you need to do, to become your most authentic self. Do you have old wounds that still need healing from past relationships, or your family of origin, or a history of negative experiences? If so, now is the time to seek the guidance of a life coach, therapist, or counselor to help you work through issues from your past. You may have developed coping mechanisms over the years that helped you to feel safe in the world. In some cases, perhaps survival mechanisms were honed that enabled you to endure traumatic experiences in the past. These may have served you in the past to keep you safe and able to function in the world, but now they may be stopping you from fully engaging with the world around you. Learning to love yourself so you can learn to love others may be one of the most difficult challenges you face in life. However, it will likely be the most rewarding! As you focus your time and energy on improving your self-esteem, self-worth, acceptance and forgiveness; you will naturally become a happier, more confident person.

SEW-N-VAC HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY SWEETHEART

If you are currently in a relationship, but fear you won’t be able to “keep” the person; or fear they’ve fallen out of love with you; etc. The advice above still stands.

In any case, you will have grown into a more mindful, fulfilled, confident person who knows their value in the world. When your self-worth is strong enough, it cannot be diminished by someone else’s failure to see it or appreciate it. Your self-esteem is based on how you view yourself and how you feel about yourself. When you’ve gotten yourself to a place where you know how unique and amazing and wonderful you are—you won’t want to be with anyone who sees you as anything less.

Remarkable Recoveries: Healing Scar Tissue Naturally Dr. Douglas R. Briggs, DC, L.Ac., EMT and Kayci Manuel, LMT

Scars are the end result of the body’s natural healing processes. All kinds of injuries – burns, cuts, surgical incisions and trauma – form scars when they heal. These scars can be of different shapes, sizes and colors. Sometimes scars are raised from the surrounding areas of skin. Such a scar stands out and is very noticeable. Whether the scar is raised or not, its rehabilitation is necessary.

in your steak). In addition to the physical limitations of collagenous tissue, the lack of blood flow and lymph drainage occurring in scar tissue makes the tissues vulnerable to dysfunction. The resulting abnormal stress on a scar’s surrounding structures may include:

Our bodies possess an amazing capacity to heal and regenerate, the skin forms a scab over a wound within three to four days following an injury. By day ten the scab typically shrinks and sloughs off as the body focuses on laying down collagen fibers to strengthen the former site of injury. The damaged tissue can be in recovery between three months to over a year before it returns to full strength. Additionally, some diseases or skin disorders (such as acne) may also result in scar tissue formation.

Nerve impingement

While the body’s formation of scar tissue is an awesome demonstration of selfpreservation, the resulting fibrous mass can set the stage for problems down the road. Composed primarily of collagen, the thickness of the scar tissue’s fibrous tissue prohibits adequate circulation (think of gristle 16

Depending on the size and depth of the wound, scar tissue will cease production 3 to 18 months following wound healing. When scar tissue is no longer produced, the scar is then considered mature. While techniques to reduce scar tissue in a mature scar are effective, a more disciplined and vigorous approach is necessary.

Pain Numbness Limited range of motion and flexibility Postural misalignment Muscle atrophy Tissue hypoxia An increase in the potential for future injury By addressing scar tissue early in its development you can minimize the secondary scar tissue problems. Immediately after a wound heals, the scar is still considered immature. During this period it may be painful, itchy or sensitive as nerve endings within the tissue heal. While it is typically red in appearance, most scars fade to normal flesh color with maturation. Exercise, massage and heat application will have the greatest positive effect on an immature scar. www.livingwellmagazine.net

The dense collagen fibers laid down during healing that form the scar is part of the body’s natural response to an injury – working on these fibers during the early healing process will help them to lay smoothly. Old tight scar tissue can be worked, but it takes time to break up the old congestion, stretch and re-orient the fibers, improve motion, and promote the healing process. Regardless of how the injury or how the scar was formed, all scars share some common characteristics. As a general rule, the earlier and more consistently scar tissue is exercised, massaged and warmed, the less possibility of developing any longterm concerns such as:

Becomes hard and non-pliable Bands of fibers on or below the surface Skin tightens or shortens. When crossing a joint, this contracture may limit range of motion, comprise function or cause deformity. Becomes dry and reopens to form a wound if not managed properly. This is especially true for skin grafts, which do not produce oil or sweat. There are a number of options to treat scar tissue, as noted, the earlier you can begin treatment the better and quicker the outcome. Massage: Working with a therapist to stretch the fibers, break up the adhesion and congestion, and work the circulation through the tissues is a great place to start. Your therapist may also use different oils to help soften the tissues to help this process. Acupuncture: Acupuncture is another tool used to introduce circulation through the injured area to move the healing process forward. It will also help to warm the tissues to increase pliability and motion. Chiropractic care: Dense scar tissue is quickly associated with limited motion. As the tissues loosen, make sure the underlying joint mechanics are at their best. Again, this will help motion and promote the ongoing healing process. Exercise: Scars are tissue. Tissue gets tight – especially scar tissue. A focused, controlled protocol of stretching the tissues and actively moving the muscles and joints will again help pliability and motion, and also work to retrain the fibers to be less tense and more functional. Diet: Get enough to drink. (Not Soda or sugar/caffeine-laden beverages!) Hydrate with water and fresh juices. The more you work a scar, the more debris your body has to flush out – you can’t do that without water. In addition, make sure you are eating good foods that nourish and heal. Eating foods that cause irritation or inflammation can actually work against you. A diet rich in whole-foods combined with high-quality supplements containing non-addictive, anti-inflammatory ingredients can help boost your body’s nutrient status to facilitate healing and reduce pain. While scar tissue is “normal” and is the body’s natural reaction to heal itself through a build up of collagen, care and correction should be taken to repair the damaged tissues to optimum strength. With massage, heat, acupuncture, manipulation and exercise, the strength and flexibility of the tissues can be restored. Although scars cannot be completely removed, there are many ways to help heal scars heal and make them less noticeable. This process takes some patience and effort, but the results are worth it.

How do environmentalists feel about the amount of packaging waste consumers have to deal with now that holiday shopping has largely switched over from retail shops to online stores?

This past holiday season marked the first year that holiday shoppers spent more of their gift budgets online than in stores, according to a recent report by the consulting firm Deloitte. Environmentalists are indeed concerned that this trend doesn’t augur well for the environment, given the extra packaging waste and energy costs that accompany getting merchandise to customers. Going to the store or mall to do our shopping burns fossil fuels, for sure, but at least the items we purchase don’t then have to be re-swaddled in extra filler and cardboard and shipped to us on a plane, truck, train or ship. For its part, Amazon—the company many blame for ushering in the transition to e-commerce in the first place and which today dominates online retail—used some 6,000 trucks and 32 planes to get some five billion items to its Prime members in 2017. During that process, untold hundreds of millions of cardboard boxes were used to get customers’ choices to their doorsteps. Those boxes are in turn typically recycled by the recipients, and collected by municipal curbside pick-up service. But that’s not the end of the story: Next, this once-used cardboard is typically shipped to China where it is soaked in water, stripped of staples and reborn as new cardboard. In many cases the box you recycle has made a 12,000-mile, fossil-fuel-spewing loop at sea in its journey of rebirth. So… while recycling is a great thing, it may not be worth it if we factor in the fossil fuels emitted in the process. We’d be better off avoiding the extra layer of packaging altogether. Maybe that trip to the mall isn’t such a bad idea after all. That said, Amazon recently boasted of transitioning to more sustainable packaging during the 2017 holiday season, switching 100 million 18

shipments from cardboard boxes to less resource-intensive padded mailers, reportedly eliminating 181,000 tons of waste. So that’s something, but Amazon and other online retailers have a long way to go in reducing not only the amount of packaging but perhaps even the packaging altogether when possible. This is not to say you should bad about recycling your boxes in the wake of the holidays, as it’s a perfectly decent environmental thing to do. But if you want to go the extra mile, maybe think of some way to reuse them at least one more time before the next recipient ships it off for recycling— or re-uses it as well. Also, don’t forget that most gift wrap—as long as it doesn’t have foil or glitter or a plasticizing non-rip coating—as well as holiday cards, can be recycled as well. And yet another option for responsibly discarding that cardboard, wrapping paper and holiday cards is in your yard waste or compost bin, in which case it will live another day not as a cardboard box but instead as part of your next batch of mulch or soil amendment.

RECIPES FROM:

Serves 1 Buddha bowl The idea of the Buddha bowl is to have something plant-based from each of the main food groups—in other words some protein, good carbohydrates, healthy fats, and plenty of fresh vegetables. With this recipe you get all that goodness plus the added benefits of some turmeric thrown in. The trick here is to cook the individual elements of the bowl separately so that you can enjoy all the layers and flavors. ½ cup cooked Yellow Rice (see page 64) or cooked basmati rice unsalted butter or coconut oil, for frying 1 roasted garlic clove (wrap a whole garlic bulb with some sea salt in foil and roast in a low oven for 1 hour) 2oz mixed oriental mushrooms 1 tablespoon white wine ½ teaspoon harissa 2oz baby spinach

The Turmeric Cookbook by Aster Turmeric has been harvested for over 5,000 years in its native Indonesia and is a key ingredient in many dishes and medicinal remedies throughout the region. It is now rising quickly in popularity everywhere in the world as wellness seekers of all ages discover the health properties of this incredible food. Considered to be one of nature’s most powerful anti-inflammatory ingredients, turmeric is a powerful medicine that has long been used in the Chinese and Indian systems of medicine as an anti-inflammatory agent to treat a wide variety of conditions. Turmeric becomes more active either when cooked or combined with other specific ingredients such as ginger and black pepper. Whether in root or powder form, turmeric can be used in juices, smoothies, infusions, soups, curries, pulses, stews, for roasting vegetables, adding to hummus, yogurt and marinades for fish, meat or tofu. All the health benefits, how to use turmeric and 50 delicious recipes are included in this stunning cookbook. Available where most books are sold.

2oz green beans 1 teaspoon grated fresh turmeric or ground turmeric 1oz firm tofu 1 black radish, scrubbed and thinly sliced ½ teaspoon grated fresh ginger root or ground ginger ¼ Chinese cabbage, shredded sea salt flakes Cook the rice and keep warm in a low oven at approximately 300°F. Melt about 1 teaspoon butter or coconut oil in a hot skillet and squeeze the roasted garlic clove into the pan. Stir for a few moments before adding the mushrooms, tossing continuously until golden and cooked. Deglaze the skillet with the white wine, transfer to a bowl, and set beside the rice in the oven to keep warm. In the same skillet, fry off the harissa and add the baby spinach to wilt, then toss in the harissa. Set aside. Heat a little coconut oil in a skillet and add the green beans, turmeric, and tofu, along with a little salt, scrambling the tofu as you cook the beans. Remove from the pan and set aside. Lastly, for the vegetables, melt a little more butter or coconut oil with the grated ginger and wilt the Chinese cabbage for a minute or two. Assemble your bowl with all the elements and serve.

Mind Mastery: Mind Training Enriches All Tasks Karen Verna Carlson

Mind training is happening in each of us all our waking hours. Habitual ways and contents of thinking are being reinforced or redirected even if we are not conscious of those choices. And they are choices whether driven by subliminal motives seeking pleasure or avoiding pain, or by thoughtfully selected goals to do good, feel powerful, promote beauty, etc. Since we’re mostly in agreement that it is better to make choices fully aware of what’s generally involved rather than blindly or haphazardly, I endorse all practices that cultivate diverse perspectives of mindfulness. The mission of meditation is to fully open to all that is within and around us at this moment. It is a 24

state to be experienced. Living from that state immensely enriches all other tasks, as I report below. Real Personal Benefits In previous columns I have described a few approaches to cultivate present awareness observing one’s breath process. I have cited numerous scientific studies proving significant benefits in all areas of life—physiological, cognitive, emotional, relationships of all types, wealth—literally everything needed for well-being. But there’s

www.livingwellmagazine.net

so much more happening on a personal level than sleeping better, feeling calmer, and getting more done! My personal benefits of the past year’s consistent mind training are unique to me. Yours will be unique to you. This is just an idea of possibilities available to anyone who practices daily mind training.

No Weather Difficulties

to acquire or achievements I wanted to accomplish. Other people have reported on a perfect match resulting from such work. A romance, a vacation, a residence, a job. These approaches didn’t produce results for me. Or the lag time was so long I honestly couldn’t sense a connection between initiating the process and realizing the result. Plus, the result only vaguely resembled what I had envisioned. Commit to the Process

For example, weather no longer poses any difficulties for me. Whenever storms have occurred I have been safely sheltered for their duration. There is always an umbrella at hand when I need it. Gone are the days when I was in the house and all my umbrellas were in the car or vice versa. Schedules have been easy to adjust to accommodate postponements without hardship for anyone. Every important event has been free of hazardous precipitation. Snow dusted vistas are classic Currier & Ives. I’m always wearing the right footwear, encountering no cobblestones, ice or puddles in high heels. Bitter cold didn’t curtail my hiking plans. A ski mask, brand new with the store tag still attached from 12 years ago, practically fell into my hands as I was dressing. Right Place, Right Time Being in the right place at the right time is by no means limited to weather conditions. I went to Pep Boys for an oil change at a bargain $22.50 and they rotated my tires for free! I wanted a popsicle stick for a craft project. I’ve got so much craft clutter in such disarray, my thinking went right into, “There must be one somewhere around in this mess,” rather than into my pre-training mindset, “I’ll never find anything in this mess.” I stood and calmly looked around, reached out to slightly shift a pile of papers and there was one, just one, clean popsicle stick lying right there. Exactly what I needed. Benefits Big and Small It doesn’t matter that these strike you as mere trifles. What matters is that these occurrences are commonplace results of consistent daily mind training. I could report about an actual six-figure windfall, as well as receiving a free practically new 2016 car, but you’d never grasp the connection to an altered mindset brought about by regular mindfulness practice. It’s the “little synchronicities” that consistently prove the benefits of mindfulness.

Energy Attracts Benefits

The catch seems to be that by committing to twice daily seated mind training along with mini-practice on-the-move sessions woven throughout each day, my needs have been sequentially fulfilled in a timely, cost-effective fashion with amazing bonuses. Focus on the process and the results seem to take care of themselves. Hmmm. Seems to resonate with the adage about nickels, dimes and dollars. Refrain from Intensity I suspect there is also the element about refraining from too intensely focusing on an outcome. This gets very tricky. Want it but don’t want it too much. Like the monkeys in Asia who reach into a man-made hole in a tree trunk, grab a big handful of nuts and become trapped because they can’t withdraw their clenched bounty, but they won’t let it go. Easy pickings for the trappers, though. Give Up Understanding I don’t understand how meditation works. Not so long ago I thought I could solve everything difficult by trying to understand it. Now, I let myself be inspired by human examples of wisdom, peace and compassion functioning brilliantly in this busy world. They ALL advise meditation. I’ve done it more than 300 consecutive days, with variable quality, and my life has shifted to a definite better state. Soften, Rest, Trust I am softening my desperation to think way ahead, to try to envision my future in the rest of my eighth decade. Yes, rest. Yes, trust the moments to unfurl for my highest good, one after the other. If life were a story, and I the author of my own, I’m now making it up as I go along towards general and personal good. I’m working without a plot, writing each sentence as it comes to me, without thinking of the next. Meditation practice inks in the details, and I like them. Try it for yourself, and watch your story unfurl. I’m sure you’ll like it.

Mind training enhances perspective, which allows and supports the energy flow that attracts benefits appropriate to one’s needs for advancement, for more positive life expression. That is my direct experience this past year. That is my description using hindsight to explain what seems almost magical. But it is no more magical than scooping out a trough on the downhill side of a stream to irrigate a garden. Wish Lists Didn’t Work There is a catch, though. I didn’t enumerate a wish list. In the past I have embarked on different strategies to attract specific things I wanted www.livingwellmagazine.net

Romancing the Stone

Suzanne Eder

Have you ever seen Romancing the Stone, a movie starring Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas that was made in 1984? It was a wild ride of a film billed as a “high-flying romance adventure.” I think I liked it, but I don’t actually remember. And really, that doesn’t even matter. I’m not here to discuss movies with you. It just so happened that, as I prepared to write this column for what will be the February issue of Living.Well, I remembered that in February we celebrate one of my least-favorite holidays: Valentine’s Day. For me all of the hype and commercialism, not to mention the sledge-hammerlike focus on romantic love, is contrived and numbing. Thankfully those thoughts came into my mind as I was sitting down to meditate, so I didn’t engage with them. I didn’t let them steer me to a grumpy, cynical place. Instead I let them drift away as I invited my awareness to expand. So there I was, sitting in the welcome peace of a quiet mind, when the words, “Romancing the Stone” suddenly appeared, followed by a few blurry images of Michael and Kathleen in a jungle. I started to inwardly chuckle at the improbability of that particular movie showing up in my awareness.

themselves only when they have accomplished something, and they have little tolerance for their mistakes and perceived character flaws. They think they are holding themselves to high standards when they take themselves to task for their failures, but what they’re really doing is judging and condemning themselves. And if you’ve heard me say this once, you’ll hear me say it a thousand times: self-judgment will never, ever, EVER get you where you want to go. But love will. And only love will. The kind of love I’m talking about is deep, abiding and unconditional. It’s the “I love myself no matter what” kind of love. In truth, it’s the “No matter what I’m experiencing now, deep down I know that I’m an extension of the Divine, so I am uniquely and infinitely worthy of love” kind of love. It’s an ongoing choice and commitment to stand with ourselves, to support and encourage ourselves, to advocate for ourselves, to listen to ourselves, to respect ourselves, to speak our truth to ourselves, to forgive ourselves, to follow our own guidance.

Then my mind jumped back to the movie title itself: Romancing the Stone. It struck me that it was the perfect title for my February article. I thanked my Large Self for that inspiration and continued with my meditation, silently wondering how on earth I was going to create an article out of a movie title.

It’s a love big enough allow our mistakes without judgment, and it’s a love wise enough to see our mistakes as evidence that we’re growing, not failing.

After meditating I stayed in my big comfy chair for a little while and my mind wandered back to those words: Romancing the Stone. And then it hit me.

As I reflected on the qualities and expressions of self-love, it occurred to me that romance has a light touch, which is the perfect antidote to the heaviness of self-judgment that turns our hearts to stone. It is inherently kind, caring and uplifting.

The most fundamental relationship in our lives is the one we have with ourselves. How we understand, view, think about and treat ourselves forms the vibrational container in which all of our relationships take shape. And in that primary, life-giving relationship, many people have hearts of stone. They don’t love themselves. Some people don’t even like themselves very much. And even those who do – those who have a clear sense of their strengths and talents and the confidence to develop and share them – don’t always know what it really mean to love themselves. They have a tendency to “love” 26

So where does romance fit into all of this?

To me the essential quality of romance is one of unexpected thoughtfulness. The message it sends is, “You are precious to me and I love thinking of ways to surprise and delight you!” Isn’t that a beautiful message to receive? Isn’t it the perfect message to send to ourselves, each and every one of us?

So I say, regardless of whether you’re in a romantic relationship with someone else or not, and regardless of whether you even want to be in a romantic relationship with someone else if you’re not already in one, and regardless of whether the relationship you may be in is wonderful or whether you’d like to see it grow in new ways, let’s challenge the notion that Valentine’s day is only about celebrating a relationship with someone else.

Because that’s what you’re doing.

Let’s dedicate this Valentine’s Day to doing something unexpectedly thoughtful for ourselves.

It just has to be genuine. And it has to feel good to you.

Let’s romance the stone of our judgy-wudgy hearts.

And with a little luck - and a decision to not wait another year before you do something like this again - it might just start dissolving that stone taking up precious space in your heart.

(Many thanks to the writers of Sex & the City for that priceless phrase which somehow, in just two words, admonishes us in a light-hearted way to stop the judgments, already!)

If you feel awkward or resistant or in any other way unenthusiastic about this, just acknowledge your feelings, breathe through them – and keep going. Dare to actually do something unexpectedly thoughtful for yourself. It doesn’t have to be a big thing, although it certainly could be. (Wouldn’t that be exhilarating?)

It might even help you remember who you really are.

What might you do that you haven’t done in a long time, or perhaps have never done, that would absolutely delight you? What would make you smile or laugh or feel appreciated? Volleyball: Killing it on the Court and Staying Injury-Free Dr. Scott E. Rosenthal

Can I make a confession? Ever since my two daughters were little, I dreamt of them playing soccer. After all, the U.S. women’s team was awesome and won many Olympic medals and even the coveted World Cup. With my years of playing experience and the fact that my wife is from Germany (a soccer superpower), it seemed natural that my girls would rule the field. But they had other plans! They fell in love with volleyball. Both of my daughters play for the Premier Volleyball Club of Delaware and for their schools. This has provided me with ample time to see what this sport is all about. With incredible pace and action in every match, plus kills, blocks, and the occasional pancake, the sport has converted me into a proud volleyball dad! As a doctor of chiropractic, I became very interested in providing care for my daughters that keeps them performing at their best and injury-free. Chiropractic offers a comprehensive approach to sports injuries, including the many types seen in volleyball. The array of techniques used in chiropractic can profoundly benefit the player and mitigate the effects the game has on the body. From gentle adjusting (realigning) the bones of the spine and extremities to soft tissue and laser techniques on the muscles, ligaments, and tendons, chiropractic can help keep your child (or you) in the match, get them back on the court, and even help improve performance. 28

Over the years, chiropractic care has become an essential component leading to the success of many professional sports teams (such as the Eagles, Phillies, 76ers, and Flyers), Olympians (including the U.S. Women’s and Men’s Volleyball Team) and serious amateurs. The value of chiropractic can be best demonstrated with the appointment of the chiropractor, Dr. William Moreau, as managing director of sports medicine for the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and chief medical officer for Team USA at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Research on the role chiropractic plays in naturally enhancing physical performance has produced findings that would excite players and coaches looking for an edge. A group of athletes under chiropractic care were compared to a control group that received no care. Volleyball performance, agility, balance, power, and hand reaction time were all measured. The chiropractic group showed improvements that can be game-changers and lead to victories on the court: After six weeks, the chiropractic group had an overall 10.7 percent improvement in athletic ability. The control group had a 4.5 percent improvement. After 12 weeks, the chiropractic group’s improvement was 16.7 percent! The study’s author concluded that: “the [chiropractic] athlete reacts faster, coordinates better, executes fine movements with improved accuracy and precision, amounting to an overall better athlete.” (1) I have found working with volleyball players to be very exciting. They are passionate, competitive, and always grateful for care that helps them excel and get and stay well. Like all sports, volleyball produces a wide variety of injuries. I find that the most common involve the lower back, knees, ankles, shoulders and wrists.

Often times the underlying causes are elusive. For example, many knee problems stem from issues in the pelvis that lead to inflexibility. Loss of pelvic motion transfers abnormal demands on the knee and ultimately results in a breakdown- even when no symptoms are felt in the pelvic region. Many shoulder, elbow or wrist problems are produced when the athlete’s neck is out of proper spinal alignment. Overall, keeping the volleyball player in top form requires a headto-toe approach. I have developed a system of analysis that looks to find all imbalances, especially those without obvious warning signs or symptoms (that can secretly crush one’s level of performance). This includes evaluating each part of the spine, upper extremities (hands to shoulders), and lower extremities (feet to hips) for misalignment and fixation. Muscle weaknesses are uncovered and corrected with laser techniques taught to me by Olympic and Tour de France chiropractor, Dr. Jeff Spencer (referred to by the athletes as, “The Sage, Secret Weapon” or “Dr. Magic”). Additionally, tensions and restrictions are released in the Fascia (densely woven connective tissue that covers every muscle, bone and other body parts). Although the spinal alignment may be the most important factor, all must be considered and the approach integrative in order to help an athlete reach her full potential. When is the best time to have a chiropractic evaluation? Considering the performance and injury-prevention benefits, I recommend the same approach used by Olympians and professionals. It’s best to be tuned up regularly and not wait for an injury or pain to occur. If pain or tightness exists or if play is off, I would urge scheduling as soon as possible. Considering the countless hours sitting on bleachers, I also recommend that all volleyball spectators be checked! I welcome questions and am happy to chat in the office, over the phone, or courtside.

Volleyball is a thrilling sport for both players and observers. It requires great physical ability and puts tremendous demand on all parts of the body. With a comprehensive chiropractic approach, athletes can excel on the court, and prevent or overcome injuries faster. HANDS ON HEALTH

I am 68 and I have had progressive symptoms of weakness and neuropathy in both feet. My diet consists of one healthy meal a day and than nibble the rest of the day on other foods and some candy. I am at a loss as to what to do and feel it may even be affecting my balance.

by: Ann Wilkinson P.T.M.S,

Q:

I had lost function of my vocal cords after exposure to chemicals and mold. After many anti-inflammatory intercessions my voice has returned somewhat. Are there any techniques that you know that can help me to be able to speak well again?

A:

I would assess your posture and mobility first to see if there are any contributing factors from the ground up. If anything contorts the transverse planes of the body starting with the pelvic floor than moving up the body, the respiratory diaphragm, thoracic inlet, base of the head, lymphatic drainage is impeded. Torsion can be caused by a short leg, rotated pelvis, rib out of alignment or an upper cervical rotation. All of these bony rotations can torque these bowl like structures in the body (the transverse planes) where vessels containing blood, nerve impulse and lymphatic fluid must flow, unrestricted. I would make sure that the legs and pelvis are symmetrical and together properly support the pelvic floor. If there is a weak ankle or knee that will need to be addressed ignored to provide a level and strong foundation. Next, unwinding the pelvic floor allows improved flow of the major lymphatic channels creating space for nerves and blood vessels as well. Next, I move up to the respiratory diaphragm which influences breath control and also houses an emotional energy center at the solar plexus. I would release and assess the tension in the psoas muscles connecting the rib cage to the lumbar spine and hip, Assessing as well, the lumbar spine. Making sure the rib cage was aligned, the thoracic inlet and shoulders being released of tension, would help flow in the chest of air and lymph as well allow for proper support of the head. Releasing the base of the head and aligning the head bones allows for lymph drainage from the head to flow better creating less congestion in the neck. Many muscles attach from the anterior neck to the head and jaw, a great deal of time is spent releasing many individual tiny muscles. Scar tissue in the vocal cords can be treated in these releases. All this prepares for working on the vocal cords. I would end a session with releases of the hyoid muscles and other muscles involving the neck front, sides and back, all the muscles of the jaw inside and out. With mobilization of the hyoid bone and the TMJ and the first top two vertebrae release of tension, maximum space and freedom of movement can be established. Strengthening which occurs with repetition; often correcting and straightening the posture, muscles will follow and offer stabilization. I would create an environment where the vocal cords can function to their full potential.

A:

I have a way of dealing with my tough clients that helps to weed out extraneous factors. When in doubt, I try homeopathy. It seems if a case is tricky and no one can figure out why or what to do, it falls in to that category. I have had a patient try hypericum 30C when they have neuropathy or reflex sympathetic dystrophy and at times that is the right one choice. However sometimes factors like medications, prior injuries may make a case multidimensional. I would suggest to try rubbing your feet with T-relief,Traumeel® and/or hypericum and calendula ointment. Myofascial release of the lower extremities and manipulation of the foot bones and leg bones are where I begin. Making sure the pelvis, lumbar spine, dural tube and craniosacral system are moving properly is all very important in cases of leg weakness, neuropathy and balance issues. Many times if an injury occurs of the tail bone, spine or legs and a person becomes immobile, restrictions of motion occur not only at the site of injury but al the joints that were used to moving, just from not putting the joints in those ranges of motion. Visualization of connecting energy from the mind to the feet is very helpful as many people tend to hyperfocus on thought and forget they have feet. The fascial releases coupled with the homeopathy and alignment and postural considerations seems to be very effective in allowing normal sensation of the feet with improvement many times each session. Finally, when safe I would encourage an exercise routine such as rebounding, dancing, walking or eventually bowling to engage foot coordination and balance. Eat fruit whenever you crave sugar especially dates, prunes or apples and eventually the candy craving will fall away.

Will solar panels work in cloudy or snowy weather?

the photovoltaic effect, is converted into direct-current (DC) electricity (which is then converted to alternate-current (AC) electricity our grid uses.

Andrew Sendy

For many, the idea of installing solar panels in cloudy and/or snowy locales seems unrealistic. After all, solar modules need sun to produce electricity, so in places where clouds and snow are common (like, say, the northern United States), how could solar energy possibly work? Instinctually, of course, that logic is ironclad. But if that is true —that solar can’t work in cloudy or snowy climates how on Earth did Germany, which gets an average 45 sunny days per year, become the world’s largest solar market for years (until it was recently surpassed by China)? The science behind the answer can be a little complicated (which we’ll discuss a little later), but the simplest way to explain it is that the sun’s electricity-producing energy comes in two forms direct and diffuse. So even under the cloudiest conditions, sunshine is reaching your solar panels, whether you can see it or not. It’s the same way you can still get a

Solar panels don’t work as efficiently on cloudy or snowy days as they would in direct sunlight. In fact, production has been shown to drop nearly 50 percent in some instances of heavy snow or cloud cover. But no matter how dark it may seem during the day, you will rarely if ever find your system not producing at least some power. Now about those temporary surges in performance... All about Albedo The albedo effect is the amount of reflected light within the spectrum of

diffuse light. That is, when sunlight comes to the Earth’s surface in whatever form (direct or diffuse), some of that light is necessarily reflected back into the atmosphere, particularly after it hits lighter (in color) surfaces.

sunburn on a cloudy day. Two types of light Solar modules still work even when the sun “isn’t” shining, it’s important to remember that whether we see the sun or not, it is always shining. But it is how the sunshine reaches the Earth that is different when clouds or other impediments like snow are present. There are two types of light available to solar panels for absorption: direct and diffuse. Direct light is the easiest to understand because, well, it’s the light that strikes the solar modules when the sun is shining. In other words, the light comes directly from the sun, hits the surface of the modules and, through 32

Diffuse light, is the sunlight that is always in the atmosphere whether we can see the sun or not. It is still sunlight and, can be absorbed by the solar panels and converted into electricity. In fact, sometimes cloudy days allow solar consumers to get short-lived surges in their modules performance.

It’s almost guaranteed that you’ve experienced that albedo effect personally at some point in your life. Ever sat in the summer sun in a black T-shirt? How about a white T-shirt? Which one absorbed more sunlight? In most cases, the black T-shirt will absorb sunlight and the white T-shirt will reflect the sunlight, changing the temperature of what’s inside the T-shirt—namely you. But how does that apply to solar panels and cloudy/ snowy days? In the case of solar modules, the goal is to absorb as much sunlight as possible so it can be converted into electricity. When there’s snow

— continued on next page

− continued from previous page surrounding your panels, it creates a vibrant white surface around them, adding to your roof’s reflectivity. In other words, your panels have the chance to absorb twice as much light—first in the form of diffuse light we referenced earlier and then the additional reflected light off the snow, all thanks to the albedo effect. Solar consumers experience a similar phenomenon during times of heavy cloud cover. As the diffuse light hits the Earth and is reflected back to the atmosphere, it never returns to its point of origin (i.e. the sun). Instead, the light gets trapped by the clouds and reflected back down to the Earth. As with snow, your modules have the opportunity (if they’re properly installed and maintained) to receive a double dose of the necessary sunlight they need to convert into electricity, causing a surge in performance. Unfortunately, the albedo effect only lasts for a short time, so your modules will eventually perform as you might expect on cloudy or snowy days, producing electricity—but not as efficiently as you might expect.

Will the panels be tilted? Believe it or not, there are situations where panels are lying so flat against a roof that the snow will just pile up on top of them which, if it gets thick enough, will interfere with proper system performance. If the panels are tilted, however, most snow will melt and slide off fairly quickly because of the absorbed heat of the panels and the slope of the installed modules. Make sure your installer understands the importance of tilting the panels and ask him how he will do it. Looking for an installer in your area check out www.SolarReviews.com Getting an accurate estimate of how much snow will affect your solar electricity production. Local installers are usually quite good at knowing if in your climate the effects of snow will lead to times where your systems performance is significantly hampered by snow and they should be able to estimate both the weeks or days per year when snow will cover the panels and the lost production that will be caused by this. Potential solar consumers should ask all of these questions to make sure their installer really knows what they’re doing and if they are capable of handling your area’s conditions.

Proper Installation Is Crucial In Snowy Climates Let’s face it: There is no escaping the effects of clouds. Whether you live in San Diego or Bangor, Maine, at some point in the life of your solar modules, clouds will obscure the sun long enough to affect your modules’ production The only way to deal with them is to accept the frequently short-lived interruptions and go on about your day. Not so if you’re adding solar panels to homes in snow climates, where proper installation is critical to lessening the effect snow will have on your system’s production. Here are two items that should be on your checklist as you’re interviewing installers for your job:

the reasons to run. I have never found running to be dull. Running is a community of friends. When my wife and I moved to Mexico, we jogged every morning to a plaza in the center of town and ran what we calculated to be three miles. After about a week, a woman ran out of a store and said in Spanish, “We have a running club, would you like to join us?” We said yes and became members of the Correcaminos (Roadrunners) de Quiroga. Many of the members of that club are like family now. So I think that’s one answer to the “why” of running. If you run, you don’t have to win or place. You don’t have to be fast. All you have to do is keep on running and other runners will accept and respect you. They’ll be your friends.

Musings On My Running Philosophy Richard Ferguson

I’m not a philosopher. That said, do I have a philosophy of distance running? Since I started running sixty-three years ago and I’ve continued with only occasional breaks for injuries and illnesses, it’s safe to say I’m a runner. In general, philosophers try to figure out “why” rather than “how” things are. I’ve written articles for running magazines for many years. In that time, I’ve interviewed hundreds of the best runners in the world including Olympians, record holders, and very famous athletes. Almost without exception, when I ask why they run, they tell me why they started running. “I wanted to lose weight.” “It kept me in shape for football.” The reason why you started running and the reason why you continue are two very different things. All you have to do is go to the track nearest where you live and count the people huffing and puffing around on the first weekend after New Year’s. Then see how many have dropped out a month later. They started, but they didn’t continue. Actually, the last reason for starting running up there was mine. I played 4A football and an all-state tackle who outweighed me by a hundred pounds caught me looking the wrong way and broke my collarbone. So, I started running with the track team as soon as I could to keep in shape. It was a surprise when I found out I could compete in the half mile and mile. I continued and ran cross-country for the University of Texas. I guess you could safely say I didn’t run for the glory because I continued to run for twenty-nine years with no races at all. That’s not to say that I don’t like competition. Even today when I see someone running in front of me on the track, I turn up the speed to see if I can pass them. I had plenty of excuses to quit running. There were freezing mornings in ice and snow or strangers would yell at me to run slower because it was too hot and humid. A car driving on the wrong side of the street clobbered me. One memorable time when I was jogging along minding my own business, a crazy person leapt over, spit in my face, and hit me. I pulled both hamstrings, injured a tendon in my butt which made it impossible to run for months and very uncomfortable to sit, had fasciitis, had operations on both my feet for bunions, and had very bad sciatica because of an injury in the Army. I even had gout in a couple of toes. Those might be excuses not to run, but they were minor compared to 34

A few times, I was injured long enough that I got badly out of shape. I kept racing anyway. For one thing, I find that racing is much more effective at increasing my speed and endurance than distance or repetitions on a track. In addition, I got to see and know the folks in the pack. I ran with the guy who carries a big American flag, another one who juggles balls all the way, and once with a couple who wore a tuxedo and white dress with a veil. They stopped and were married along the way. There is the simple pleasure of running. Even now, there are days when everything is right. No pains. No aches. Blue sky. Wind in my face. Everything working perfectly. Just floating along. If you don’t have that feeling, if it’s work or an unpleasant thing you have to do for your health, you won’t keep it up. I don’t go into a blank nirvana, but if I think about the leaky roof of the house and a noise like safety pins rattling in the transmission of the car, they’re balanced out by the eagle soaring overhead. You never know what’s going to happen. In Galveston, I was finishing eight miles when I saw a puppy sprinting down the sidewalk ahead of me. Every time someone opened a car door to get in or out, he’d dash to it and jump in. He’d quickly be thrown back out. He was almost run over numerous times in just a few minutes, so I called him. He liked the idea of running with me so we finished the run together to my home. We searched for his owners but never found them. Churchill (he looked like Winston Churchill) lived with us for seventeen years and was as good a friend as I’ve ever had. I have to admit that I love to compete though. The thought of winning or placing in my next race is a powerful incentive to go a few more miles and fast laps.

About the Author: Richard Ferguson was born in Houston, Texas. He spent time on his grandfather’s ranch in New Mexico most summers until he was nineteen when he joined the Army. He still has the first short story he wrote when he was five. In it, a boy finds an injured prairie dog and nurses it back to health. Richard must have already had a flair for the surprise ending, or a short attention span, because at the end the boy throws the prairie dog back into the ocean and it swims away to live happily ever after. An interesting bit of extreme trivia is that Walter Cronkite and Richard did the same things. Richard was an editor for the Purple Pup at Lanier Junior High School in Houston and so was Cronkite. Richard wrote for the Lamar High School paper and so did Cronkite. Richard wrote for the University of Texas newspaper and so did Cronkite. In the Army, Richard wrote for the Stars and Stripes. He now lives in Mexico with Hamish and Poochie, his two canine friends who he saved one way or another. Spirit Runner is available for purchase on January 12th, 2018 on Amazon and most major booksellers.

The Power of One Step

Joe White

People always ask me, “Why do you have people firewalk at some of your events?” I have to admit, the thought did cross my mind before the first time I firewalked over 20 years ago, of what does walking barefoot over hot coals, with an average of 1200 degrees have to do with me improving my life. But after I crossed that bed of coals ten feet long, I knew it had everything to do with it. What I realized is that no matter whatever you want in life, to be more happy, to grow your business, have an unbelievable passionate relationship or create financial abundance there is one undeniable ingredient that must be present, self belief. The myth is self belief is something we need to find. We read self help books, watch Dr. Phil, or go to therapy; all in a quest to find belief in ourselves. Just like the Tin Man, Lion and Scarecrow. They all were looking for something and they were convinced that they were lacking and hoped the Wizard could give to them what they thought they needed. We know what they learned. That is was within them all along. I have firewalked over 1000 times. Coached thousands of people to cross safely. From CEOs of Fortune 500 companies to a mother trying to get clean from drugs. I have trained and certified 100’s of Firewalk Instructors around the world and I always see the same thing. Why people think they are firewalking has really nothing to do with who they are on the other side of that coal bed.

No matter what encouragement I may give you, you have to believe in yourself to take the first step. You have to trust you. It doesn’t matter if you see 50 people go before you, it is still a battle between belief in you and fear. Understanding human psychology teaches us that those two things cannot co-exist in the same space, one must win out. In that moment of uncertainty, that moment of decision, something absolutely amazing shows up in that moment when you stand on the coal bed. You discover you. You don’t find self belief in firewalking or any where in life. It is when a challenge appears and you rise up and invoke the belief in yourself that lies dormant. The problem is that most people rather not deal with challenges and will avoid them. When life gives you a challenge that you can’t avoid, we tend to just want to ride the storm out instead of rising above the storm. We discover what is really inside ourselves in these moments. We discover just how strong we are. When there is no other choice but to step forward, the warrior inside of us is summoned and shows up. Do not be afraid of discovering that self belief that lives inside of you because with it you will live an extraordinary life. You are next, will you take the first step? Disclaimer: Joe White of Get Life Coaching is a certified Master Firewalker Instructor and is recognized as one of the top firewalk instructors in the world. Never attempt to firewalk on your own or with an untrained or uncertified individuals. You could be severely injured. Until next month, Live Free!!

There is no super secret to how to walk on fire. Yes, the coals are hot. Flesh burns at or about 138 degrees and the coals are about 1200 degrees. There are plenty of theories floating on the internet on why you can, but none are really fully accurate. The only thing that is really important is that you can. All you have to do is believe in yourself that you can take that first step. See it is all about the commitment of the first step. To lift one foot off the grass and place it on the burning coals. One simple step, but it is the hardest of all steps. 36

Bumbu Rum A flagship rum, Bumbu Rum is based on the original recipe created by 16th and 17th century sailors of the West Indies, who blended native Caribbean ingredients into their rum and called it “Bumbu” – truly the original craft spirit. Using the same all-natural native spices and no artificial colors or flavors, our rum is an authentic revival of this piece of Caribbean history, distilled in small batches and blended by hand. We’re pretty sure our great-great-grandfathers would approve. The ultra-heavyweight glass bottle is a work of art on its own, adorned with a tarnished metal “X” in front and map of the Caribbean across the back. You will love the old-fashioned, oversized cork – you’ll hear a celebratory POP each time you crack open the bottle. Sip Bumbu straight, but try it over ice or in your favorite cocktail. www.bumbu.com
