words from the editors and publishers:

Wow! It is hard to believe that the holidays are already over and we are starting a new year!

Merriam Webster Dictionary has chosen the word “surreal” as the word of the year meaning, "marked by the intense irrational reality of a dream," or "unbelievable, fantastic," the word joins Oxford's "post-truth" and Dictionary.com's "xenophobia" as the year's top choices. "It just seems like one of those years," said Peter Sokolowski, Merriam-Webster's editor at large. Looking back I would have to agree, it definitely has been one of those years! Traditionally, when a new year begins, we immediately start to make resolutions to change our lives; a lot of the usual resolutions are usually broken by about the third week of January. However, you can make this year different, by procuring professionals to help you this year, your success rate could be significantly greater than trying once again to do it alone, forcing you to make the very same resolution next year. Thank you to all of our readers, advertisers, and contributors for helping LWM become a voice for living well. We look forward to the New Year and spending another year with all of you. This year Living Well Magazine celebrates its 12th anniversary with even more great content to help us all live well and enjoy life while doing it ! Vinegar FYI

 CLEAN STONE COUNTERTOPS

Vinegar is often touted as the magical liquid fit for every job. It can remove mold, soothe a rash or sunburn, and make your toilet bowl shine. The humble liquid can also help prevent the spread of infections like the flu when used properly. But the praised cleaner can’t do everything. Here are nine times to put down the bottle and look for another cleaning solution.

Don’t ruin your beautiful countertops or stone tiles with vinegar! Vinegar is 5 percent acetic acid, and that’s enough to damage or etch your marble, granite, limestone, travertine, or concrete tiles. Vinegar can also remove the sealant on your countertops or tile and make it more prone to future stains. Instead, wash with a simple soap and water solution. Check with the manufacturer before using vinegar on man-made countertops like quartz.

REMOVE SPILLED EGG

Dried-on egg or spilled yogurt can be a pain to clean up, but add vinegar to the mix and you’ll be scrubbing for even longer. The acidity of the vinegar makes the proteins coagulate and stubbornly stick to the surface. Keep vinegar away from any protein-based messes.

SCRUB TILE AND GROUT

Be careful using vinegar on tiles—it’s great for removing mold stains and soap residue, but it can also break down your grout. That’s because vinegar reacts to the cement within grout, causing it to dissolve. The stronger the vinegar solution, the more damage that may be done. You can safely clean sealed grout with a diluted vinegar solution—just be sure to test it on a small area first to see if it etches the tile or removes the sealant.

IN THE WASH... BUT NO BLEACH PLEASE

Between tough stains and musty towels, it seems like a great idea to add a little odor-neutralizing vinegar to the wash. But before you do, make sure you don’t have any bleach in your load. Combining vinegar and bleach creates deadly chlorine gas. It can also ruin your clothes by creating hydrochloric acid, which is highly corrosive. Likewise, oxygen bleach should not be used with vinegar. The peroxide in the oxygen bleach combines with vinegar to make peracetic acid, an acid so strong that it’s used to sterilize medical equipment

REMOVE FINGERPRINTS

It makes an excellent glass cleaner, so it makes sense to try to clean your touchscreen or computer with vinegar. But doing so may remove the protective oleophobic coating from the screens. Instead, just buff your devices with a slightly damp microfiber cloth, and stay away from vinegars or other cleansers. 8

KILL PESTS ON PLANTS

Vinegar-maker Heinz recommends using vinegar to deter ants and remove other insects; however, this should be used with care out in the garden. Vinegar is a well known weed killer, which means that spraying or spilling it on your plants could easily harm or kill them. Stick to indoors or the perimeter of the house to protect plants and get the pest removal benefits.

SCRUB YOUR POTS

Your homemade dish detergent or anti-spot rinse that includes vinegar may work great to cut the grease and make your dishes shine, but they can damage your pots. Cast iron and aluminum pots may corrode when exposed to vinegar, and it will also remove your hard-earned seasoning on your cast iron cookware. However, vinegar is safe to use on stainless steel and enameled cast iron pots.

MIX WITH CASTILE SOAP

Castile soap and vinegar are the holy grail of green cleaning— until you mix them together. Vinegar breaks down the castile soap and reverses the soap’s saponification. When mixed, you’re left with an oily, curdled liquid that won’t clean very well. But don’t fret! You can still use both. Simply wash with one, rinse, and wash with the other to get the maximum power out of both.

REMOVE DYE STAINS OR COLOR TRANSFERS

We’ve all had our favorite white T-shirt ruined by a pair of dark jeans or accidentally turned our socks a sad shade of pink. But don’t look to vinegar to fix this one—it will actually make the color permanent. On the plus side, adding vinegar to a load with a new pair of jeans or other colored clothing can help set the dye and prevent it from coming out all over your clothes in the first place.

Is polyester fleece clothing a huge contributor to the problem of plastic in our oceans?

We’re all familiar with the issue of non-biodegradable plastic debris (shopping bags, soda bottles, fishing nets etc.) clogging up our waterways and making its way out to the sea—sometimes accumulating in huge “gyres.”1 But what you might not realize is that even if you are responsible about recycling and not littering, you may still be contributing to the ocean’s plastic burden by virtue of the clothes on your back. “The single biggest plastic pollution problem facing our ocean is microfiber: trillions of pieces of tiny fibers flowing into the ocean—every time we use our washing machines,” reports the nonprofit Rozalia Project. “Our synthetic clothing is breaking up, sending this plastic microfiber out with the drain water.” According to the group, just one fleece jacket could shed over 81,000 minute strands of polyester per wash. “New York City, alone, could have 6.8 billion microfibers flowing into its harbor every day.” According to activist Sarah Mosko, the tiny size of microplastics actually adds to their dangers. “Because plastics are lipophylic (oil-loving), oily contaminants in seawater are drawn to them,” she reports on Algalita’s blog. “Japanese researchers found that plastic pellets no more than a half millimeter in diameter could adsorb hazardous chemicals (like polychlorinated biphenyls, nonylphenols and derivatives of DDT) onto their surfaces at up to one million times the concentrations in the surrounding water.” The tiny size of microplastics means that even minute creatures can ingest them, thereby introducing any chemicals they carry into the very bottom of the food chain. The Rozalia Project adds that “ingested pollutants can un-stick from the plastic and end up in the stomachs and tissue” of everything from plankton to whales, causing issues at the cellular level as well as digestive problems. Rozalia researchers found that two-thirds of all fish species tested from markets in California had

1 Gyres - definition of gyres by The Free Dictionary www.thefreedictionary.com/gyres gyre (jīr) n. A circular or spiral motion or form, especially a circular ocean current. intr.v. gyred, gyr·ing, gyres. To whirl.

microfiber or microplastic in them. Even those who don’t eat fish may not be able to avoid ingesting microfibers, given that farm animals are typically fed fish meal as a dietary staple. So what can be done? Rozalia has developed “the world’s first consumer solution” to stop microfiber pollution. The patentpending microfiber catcher works in any washing machine, catching microfibers so they can’t flow out with the drain water. “Early test results show the microfiber catcher keeping 2,0009,000 pieces of synthetic microfibers from flowing into our public waterways per wash per household.” Outdoor clothing and gear makers are starting to realize that they can be part of the solution as well. Earlier this year, Patagonia commissioned microbiologists from UC Santa Barbara to study the problem and suggest ways the company could reduce microfiber pollution moving forward. The company is sharing the findings with its competitors in order to collaborate on industrywide solutions. We probably can’t do much, concludes Sarah Mosko, about the microplastics that are already contaminating our oceans, but we can start making smarter clothing choices, adding that “natural fiber cloths like cotton, silk, wool, bamboo, hemp and even soy may be better choices for those concerned about the environment. All derive from renewable sources, are intrinsically biodegradable, and their fibers would not attract oily chemicals out of seawater.”

INTRAVENOUS VITAMIN C — A CANCER TREATMENT ? cancer cells. It also helps patients undergoing chemotherapy by improving appetite, heal faster, improve resistance to infection, reduce pain, and have a better sense of well being. Needless to say, I was compelled to add this therapy in my approach to cancer in my own patients.

Approximately 20 years ago I received a telephone call from a physician in California. He was interested in speaking with me about my treatment of cancer with high doses of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C). He had heard from the manufacturer who produces the intravenous form of Vitamin C that I was utilizing this treatment in animals with cancer. It was a very interesting conversation since he had been doing it in humans for almost 30 years! I was totally surprised. I had done much research on the topic and was confused as to why this was not a treatment that was being utilized and researched in both humans and animals. Why was this information not utilized? In my opinion, one of the reasons for this is that vitamins cannot be patented; therefore, it cannot be a source of income. The big pharmaceutical companies won’t make money. It is that simple. These drug companies are in business to make profits for their share holders, not to “cure disease.” Just listen to the number of side effects on a drug commercial, all the while watching a family play in the park while having a picnic ! Sure, your cholesterol may go down, but you also could have a stroke, heart attack and even die as an “adverse event.” Vitamin C happens to be one of the most potent biological antioxidants on the planet. It has been shown to be antiviral, antihypertensive, airway protective, ophthalmoprotective, and has heavy- metal detoxifying properties. Interest in Vitamin C peaked in the 1970’s when Dr. Linus Pauling noted that intravenous Vitamin C was beneficial to cancer patients. After that, the Mayo Clinic conducted a study themselves. Their conclusion was that Vitamin C was not helpful. The truth is that the Mayo Clinic studied Vitamin C taken orally by mouth, not intravenously into a vein. This is a major difference. The same method was not even studied. Consequently, the Mayo Clinic did NOT study intravenous Vitamin C. As a matter of fact, during 20052006 studies showed that maximum blood concentrations of Vitamin C were achieved by the intravenous route. Early clinical studies also found that intravenous Vitamin C could improve symptoms and prolong life in terminal cancer patients. High dose intravenous ascorbic acid (the scientific name for vitamin C), has been used as a therapy for bacterial infection, viral infection and as adjuvant therapy for cancer patients. It helps the immune system neutralize bacterial and fungal infections. The National Institute of Health (NIH) has published evidence demonstrating its anticancer properties. Vitamin C also boosts the immune system and it inhibits an enzyme that tumors use to spread and metastasize to other organs. It induces apoptosis (programmed cell death) of

Vitamin C at higher doses and when given in sufficient amounts intravenously will cause remarkable changes. At sufficient amounts, unlike typical cancer treatments, Vitamin C, given intravenously, will raise the level of hydrogen peroxide in the bloodstream and kills cancer cells leaving normal cells alone. What a tremendous finding! Vitamin C is extremely safe and non-toxic. The National Institute of Health knew this information from prior to 2005. The media, however, neglected to publish this information. Unfortunately, the public, those that need this information and help, were left in the trash. For those of you interested, research papers and references are available very readily. For 17 years now, I have treated numerous cancer patients with intravenous Vitamin C. The protocol is mine and I have developed and modified it over the past 17 years. I have found it to be extremely beneficial. Not only do these pets handle the treatment without issue, but they have a good quality of life during and after treatment. I have observed no negative side effects and the patient maintains a good quality of life. It appears to me that the cancer is managed. These dogs and cats “live” with their cancer. I have had cases in which dogs or cats with tumors in the abdomen have lived a good quality of life and lived months to years beyond what was anticipated. I had an 8 year old, feline patient, which had a tumor in its abdomen the size of a baseball. “Smokes” life was extended by five years, at which point his owner moved out of the country and I lost contact with them. The tumor did not grow or spread to any other organ in his body. In other words, we managed his cancer. It is my opinion that if you provide the body with what it needs, it will fight to heal itself. My goal is to keep my cancer patients happy, healthy, and maintaining a good quality of life, in spite of their cancer. This can be done without the harsh side effects of some other common cancer treatments. There is no reason why our family pets that are suffering from cancer, feel worse as a result of the medications they are taking, or treatments they are receiving. I have utilized intravenous vitamin C infusions as a major part of my integrative treatment for cancer. I have been very pleased with the results. Not the Same Old, Same Old

Suzanne Eder

We begin again. This is the beauty, power and promise of a new year – the opportunity to begin again. A fresh start. A blank canvas awaiting our inspired brushstrokes. A chance to deepen our commitment to what really matters to us. Of course we can do that at any time, on any day, in any month. Yet the newness of a year with a first-ever number, and the spaciousness of a calendar not yet cluttered with too many commitments, creates the perfect opportunity to remind us of the potent opportunity we have to begin again. To resolve to create positive change in our lives. Ah, resolutions. Over the years we’ve been bombarded with messages about the high failure rate of New Year’s resolutions. Many of us have come to regard them as hollow promises, fun to make but not realistic to keep, and it seems almost inevitable that they’ll get trampled by the relentless demands of everyday life. And then, when they do, we use that as a good reason to beat ourselves up. We see ourselves as unfocused, undisciplined or unskilled. And so we drop a notch in our self-estimation, which is deflating, and we drift further away from the engaged, fulfilling life we genuinely long to live. There are ways to set intentions that make it easier for us to honor them – plenty of ways – but I’m not here to give you a set of instructions about that. I’m here to spotlight a fundamental shift you can make so that, if you choose to set fresh intentions in 2017, or renew some old ones, they have a better chance at gaining traction in your life. The shift I’m talking about is a shift in focus, which creates a shift in momentum. You can focus on all the times you “failed” in carrying out a resolution or honoring an intention. Or you can focus on the persistence of your desire to create positive change. Like the roots of a tree that push heavy slabs of sidewalk concrete skyward, your genuine longings for a healthier, happier and more fulfilled life continue to grow, with the power of Life itself, beneath the surface. Think about that. Your genuine longings for a healthier, happier and more fulfilled life are powered by Life itself. They don’t wither and die when you get distracted or discouraged. They’re still pulsing within you and looking for any opportunity, large or small, to assert themselves into your awareness. Let yourself feel the strength, commitment and courage that your longings have. Just because we live in a world that all too often encourages us to accept the impossibility or impracticality of our dreams doesn’t mean that your longings have accepted that. It’s just the opposite. Your longings arise from a place of deep inner knowing of the Truth of who you are and what is possible 12

for you to create and experience. Their job is to keep nudging you in that direction. And so they do. Practice appreciating them for that. Practice appreciating yourself for that. When you focus on the persistence of your longings for greater fulfillment, you focus on the very energy and strength that will move you toward that fulfillment. If you keep setting the same intentions or making the same resolutions each year, consider how powerful they must be to keep showing up. Don’t lapse into judgment about how you’ve failed to act on them; lean into the pull they have on you. Feel their encouragement and promise. There is energy here. There is movement here. There is Life here. Let yourself be awed by that. As a friend of a friend of mine once said, with great brilliance and simplicity, “Life keeps life-ing.” Your longings, like the roots of a tree, are alive and growing, even when you’re not directly paying attention to them. They keep “life-ing.” When you do pay attention to them - when you reflect on them and dwell in them - you invite their Life into your life. And with the flow of Life comes new possibilities. You may have missed out on an opportunity in the past to start a particular business or take a different job or join a new exercise program; you may have had your book proposal turned down or gained back half of the weight you lost or failed to meet the partner of your dreams on Match.com. But you haven’t missed out on the opportunity to be happier and more fulfilled. That opportunity is ever-present, even as the specifics of how it will manifest might change. Your longings know this. That’s why they keep showing up. Pay attention to them. Look in the direction they’re pointing now, not in the direction from which you came. This is, truly, a fresh moment. There has never been a moment like this one. You are now in 2017, a year you’ve never been in before. Your longings are continuing to push the cement of your rigid assumptions and fears and beliefs about what you can and cannot create out of the way. This is your time. Begin again. “Proper utilization of numerological guidelines can provide each individual with tools of consciousness. If the tools are handled with skill, each person can better understand oneself, other people and life while establishing a reliable foundation for ever more effective actions.” Lynn M. Buess, Numerology for the New Age (DeVorss & Co., Marina del Rey, CA, 1978)

Add up this year’s numbers—2+0+1+7. Numerology further reduces the sum of 10 to the number 1, since single digit numbers 1 through 9 represent subtle energy as universal patterns. Beginnings are an activity fueled by “number 1” energy, which also contains energy characteristic of unity, completeness, totality, integration, connectedness, fulfillment. The zero part of 2017’s sum 10 indicates the availability of special blessings, gifts or resources for beginning this new cycle. In numerology zero is not just a place holder as in mathematics. Metaphysical aspects of zero ignite opportunity. Similar to a designated wild card, zero offers empowerment. Partner with Power Think of numbers as incorporating invisible forces with which we can partner to more easily accomplish the work of living. By invisible forces I mean phenomena like gravity, electricity, buoyancy, charisma. Just as I would situate my garden on the down slope from a stream for irrigation, I choose to draw on the start-up power magnified by this year’s numbers to launch this current 9-year cycle. Creating a major transformation of my living/working space will not occupy 9 years, but several years’ consciously clearing and reconfiguring indoor and outdoor 14

space will morph into a more significant venture, which is at the moment unknown to me. Choose a Change So, I invite you to spend this month thinking. . . talking. . . plotting. . . feeling. . . meditating . . . praying. . . envisioning. . . about what change you’d like to begin. Because 2017 energy is of a “10” nature, this is an especially auspicious time for activities relating to change just as spring is auspicious for gardening. Brainstorming or envisioning possibilities is a good beginning. The spirit of number 10 activity can be light, playful, exploratory. No need to make a decision about anything right now. Let decisions manifest out of a treasure hunting spirit and process. Gather information as well as identify feelings. Number 2 Individual numbers representing this year also offer energetic or metaphysical power. The numeral 2, which will be the opening number for 983 more years until 3000, is about partnership and balance. That’s not much time for all we’ve yet to learn about getting along with other people and life forms. However, this theme recurs with every appearance of the symbol 2 on clocks, calendars, drivers’ licenses, phone numbers, zip codes, etc., etc., attracting ongoing learning opportunities about partnership and balance. Repetition Magnifies Availability The numbers 0 and 1 of 2017—(technically zero is not a number)—further magnify the availability of empowerment as well as of favorable timing for new endeavors to amplify connectedness. I estimate four or five times as much 10 power coming in this year to foster success. The repetition of 0 and 1 in 2017’s individual numbers as well as in its total sum 10 theme

exponentially enhances potential for accomplishment. Number 7 The energy pattern of number 7 involves trust and openness. People, places, events and things will be manifesting more trust issues this whole year for Earth residents. My destiny number (aka life or birth number) is 7, so I will be especially active this year with lessons about trust and openness.

what you are right now, and what you are likely to be if you choose to explore and use your cosmic relationship with numbers.” The New Year is a great time to begin this powerful 9-year cycle to learn more about yourself. Calculate Your Life Number

KVC’s Quick Reference Numerology

You can easily calculate your destiny/life/birth number by adding the numbers of your birth month, day and year (all four numbers). The person born on February 28, 1947 is allied with a number six energy (2+2+8+1+9+4+7 = 33 = 6) characterized by service and responsibility. Double threes exponentially magnify the energy of creative self expression, which serve in this case as components of that number 6 life. That person just retired from 30 years as a university security director, during which time she personally wrote, published, played and sang music. She is a poet and a woodcrafter and a nature photographer. She is a 33/6.

Different Components Some sixes are comprised of energy patterns from the numbers 4 (stability and process) and 2. Persons born September 1, 2003, March 2, 2008, or other dates yielding the sum 15 express “6” energy from those components of (#1) unity and (#5) freedom/ independence. A person born January 1, 2011 would be a pure #6 destined for pioneer work due to the compounding influence of four 1’s.

A Rare Opportunity The enormous power available to everyone this year to set positive change into motion is a rare opportunity. When the next 9-year cycle begins in 2026 (=10) it will only be 10% as powerful a support as 2017 (=10) with its number 1 in the third place. The previous nine-year cycle began in 2008 (=10), and lacked the additional power of a number 1 in its lineup. The cycle before that began 1999 (=10) which doubly emphasized opportunity for change (with three 9’s, plus 1 in its lineup and in its sum), but lacked in its lineup the additional empowerment gifts catalyzed by the metaphysical energy of zeros. There won’t be another mega-support opportunity like this year’s until 2071. (Note the same numbers as this year in different positions.) Ancient, Universal, and Accurate Numerology is a metaphysical science with ancient roots going back tens of thousands of years. It is “astonishingly accurate” states Lloyd Strayhorn in his classic Numbers and You (Ballantine Books, NY, 1980). Universal principles provide intelligent answers and practical solutions to many challenges. “Numerology in and of itself is not a cure,” writes Strayhorn. “In essence, your personal numbers are simply ‘indicators’ of what you have been, www.livingwellmagazine.net

4 Things all High Performers

needs and clear translations for reading and understanding food labels? Make a list and look for classes or seek out a high performing a coach. Coaches are great for teaching you proven systems to reach your goals and hold you accountable along the way.

Have in Common with Your Wellness Journey

Melissa Crispell

Before I tell you what all these people have in common, I feel like we need to define what a high performer is. Do you know the difference between a peak performer and a high performer? It took me a while to get this concept but Brendon Burchard taught me: “High performers excel and succeed above their standard norms consistently and are in it for the long term.” If you’ve ever played a sport, trained for an event, prepared for a big presentation then you’ve experienced peak performance. You’ve put in time, energy and training to be your absolute best at something for that moment in time. But what happens after that? Do you continue or do you start to fall off the wagon a little? That’s the difference between peak and high performers. The same is true for your health and wellness. Some people have a specific health concern and will fine tune their exercise routine or cut out certain foods for a period of time to achieve their goal. But is that really being in it for the long term? Is this start & stop habit really pushing you to be a high performer in your wellness big picture? Please know I’m not just talking to athletes here! I’m talking to anyone who has trouble getting out of bed and facing the day because they’re so tired. I’m talking to the weekend warrior that is on the couch recovering because they’ve outdone themselves raking leaves or shoveling snow. I’m talking to the parent that is missing out on time with their children, friends, loved ones because of their health concerns.

2. Energy: Do you have consistent physical and mental energy? Are you feeding your body and mind or fueling them? Drink pure water, eat non-GMO enzyme rich foods, and consider a quality brand supplement to fill in the gaps that our current food supply may be missing. 3. Courage: Do you take action? Are you consistent? Shed the excuse of “someday” or “I’d really like to (fill in the blank)”. Make a plan and take action. Check out a new exercise class or set a date to walk with a friend to kick-start your physical activity. Start replacing your processed foods with locally grown, pesticide free, fresh fruits and vegetables. Make the switch to grass fed, free range meats. 4. Productivity: Do you consistently minimize distractions? What gets in the way of being your best self? Own your morning routine! If you don’t have one, get one. Your morning should not be a launch pad for unorganized reactions. Set your exact intentions for the day before starting any efforts. Consider a prayer or meditation time. Guided mediation can actually retrain your brain to reject negative/self-sabotaging mindsets. You gain 30% productivity by not checking e-mail in the first 60 minutes of your day. There is no right or wrong score. If you’re not where you want to be it’s time to make a change. Believe in yourself and your ability to achieve.

If you want to be fully engaged in your life score yourself (1-10, 10 being the highest) in the following areas: 1. Clarity: Do you know what you really want and how to get it? Is there a specific health concern you’re looking to resolve? Wouldn’t it be great to have the ability to understand and distinguish which supplements would be specific to your own 20

HANDS ON HEALTH by: Ann Wilkinson P.T.M.S,

Q:

For a recent shoulder surgery, the doctor prescribed pain pills post op, I first declined oxycontin because a friend of mine died when combining this medicine with alcohol. I left with Percoset. However I have friends that started on prescription drugs and progressed to heroin. As much as I want to follow doctors orders , I am afraid to take the pills. The pain is moderate and yes it would be good to have some relief. Do I have other options that can provide the relief the pain pills could have?

A:

I am so sorry you are having this experience. Please know you are not alone! Even though there are places where these incidents are more prevalent, they have been occurring all over the United States. It is not just your young friends, but people of all ages. I am proud of you for saying NO. The good news is there are many other options for coping with pain. You will notice I do not use the word pain management. I would not like to be in the business of managing pain, I would rather focus on abolishing pain. I advise my patients to take Arnica 30C before and after surgery. This will change the entire picture right from the get go. For a fracture or and arterial bleed, or whatever the patient presents with, the doctor states,” the patient is not crying, or there should be more swelling.” They are always perplexed as the patient presents with much less pain than normal for the incident. Arnica is the most widely used and effective homeopathic remedy for pain, almost all the time. At times, further refinement of choice of remedy is needed. For example, tips of things such as fingers, tailbones, teeth, even if they had resected the tip of your clavicle, those areas have way more nerve endings and pain is always huge, bigger than the site of injury. In these instances, Hypericum 30C is the remedy of choice. Most people do not know about homeopathy in our country even though it has been used for more than 200 years in all other countries. In fact, there are homeopathic hospitals and pharmacies in other countries. Homeopathic remedy kits are inexpensive and with a few reference books you can handle the majority of your medical needs at home, if you have the right remedy on hand. The good news is there are a handful of common remedies that handle most issues. The more complicated the patient the more research needed and the more rare remedies can be accessed. Acupuncture, Meditation Ice, Herbs such as Turmeric, Boswelia, and Bromaline can be effective in decreasing inflammation. In your case, if you put water in a paper cup and freeze it, you can massage the ice right on the painful area. Joint mobilization is a very effective pain relieving technique that I use often. Please stay strong and focused and know that you always have choices. Your life is created by the choices you make and it sounds like you will have a Great Life because you are Aware. 22

abolishing PAIN Q:

I was referred to you with Mortons” neuroma, a foot pain. I felt much better after the first treatment. I am baffled by something, you hardly touched my foot and worked on my whole body. WHY? Why did I feel better and why did you treat my back area and stretch my neck?

A:

In osteopathy, it is imperative to view the patient as an entire BEING not a foot or leg walking in the door. The angle of your pelvis and the health of your back will determine how the foot strikes the ground. Yes, I need to stretch the little muscles between the toes and mobilize your foot bones. Balancing the pelvis and lengthening the dural tube is also equally as important. If I make your foot more mobile and it is being traumatized with every step or misstep ( in the case of pelvic rotation ) than all I did on the foot would quickly revert back to the dysfunctional state. If the pelvis is rotated, the foot will strike hard on the side that the pelvis is rotated forward because it feels longer to the body. I pulled on your neck to stretch the dural tube ( the tissue lining the inside of the spinal canal ) because tightness here affects the entire spine and pelvis. You felt better because treating your whole body had the most impact on your foot strike and this is a complete healing.

Winter

ACUPUNCTURE AND COLD

Dr. Kelly Brown

Winter has arrived. It is cold out there! Hopefully, you have remembered to wear a scarf and are staying healthy. Respiratory infections and stomach illnesses have been increasing, as normally occurs this time of year. Last month’s article focused on the Chinese evil, wind. The six evils are wind, cold, heat, summerheat, dampness, and dryness. We are approaching the coldest time of year. Cold Evil In Chinese medicine, there are specific signs and symptoms associated with cold. These complaints are similar to how cold behaves in nature. Cold slows activity and is congealing. Cold diseases can either come from the outside or can immediately impact the digestive system. The external illness can be combined with wind or can be due to cold exposure. Internal illness is usually due to too much intake of cold, raw food and drink. Pain from cold exposure is important to understand. As stated above, cold can be congealing. This means cold exposure can slow the movement of Qi and blood in an area resulting in pain. Cold can get lodged in an area. Then the muscles become tight and pain can be severe. Discomfort with arthritis is often worse in cold weather, due to this hardening effect of cold. External Cold External cold invasion looks a lot like what our culture knows as the common cold. Symptoms can include, chills and fever, cold sensitivity, profuse clear mucus, and pain. Sweating is also diminished, since cold can close the pores. Cold damages the yang, the warming and moving aspect of the body. People sick with a cold will not want to do many activities. Chinese medicine treats cold exposure by warming and inducing sweat to remove the cold from the exterior.

abdomen, grumbling intestines, watery diarrhea, and clear vomit. The stomach and spleen are important in digestion in Chinese medicine. The stomach is the first step in building Qi from food. It sends the good aspects of food and drink to the spleen for Qi and blood formation. When there is excessive intake of cold food and drink, the spleen has to help warm the stomach for digestion. The spleen, then, is unable to perform its usual functions. Have you ever gotten sleepy after eating a large salad? Most of your Qi is focused on warming the cold, raw meal you just ate! Diet and Cold Chinese medicine focuses on balance of the whole system. When it comes to food, consider a plate of sushi. Sushi is raw and cold, it is always plated with wasabi and ginger. Wasabi is hot and ginger is warm. When eaten together, there is balance in your stomach, and less work is needed for digestion. Even if you do not eat sushi, this is a good place to start when thinking about what to eat. If you cannot go without the large, cold salads, add something warm. Eat salads with hot soup, or add warming substances such as garlic and ginger to salad dressings. To prevent internal cold invasion, choose balance in food. However, if there is already cold present, treatment includes warming and dispersing the cold. Cold Prevention Again, the most important protection from external cold is prevention. Continue to wear a scarf when it is windy, and wear appropriate clothing to keep warm. Internal cold is prevented with balance and variety of food. Eat plenty of warm foods throughout the cold months to support your digestive system. Acupuncture can help to improve balance in the body and prevent internal and external cold.

Internal Cold Alternatively, internal cold invasion is mostly self-induced. Frequent intake of cold beverages and cold, raw foods brings cold directly to the internal organs. Symptoms include pain in the

Steps To Breakthrough Your Biggest Barriers Joe White

Being stuck is awful. Nothing is worse than knowing what you want, but you sabotage yourself, get distracted or just simply you give up. We tend to make mistakes in our thinking, knowing what we need to do will get us to do what we must do to achieve our goals. Unfortunately, knowing what to do is not enough. When we fail to follow through when we know what to do, it is frustrating, and then we end up doubting if we really want it or worse, if we can even achieve it at all. My approach has always been more than supplying knowledge or surface change. If you are stuck, it has less to do with what you know and even a smaller extent of your ability. In my 17 years experience as a life coach, one of the biggest patterns I see is called a Mixed Association. That is where we associate massive pleasure of getting what we want, but we also associate massive pain to not getting it, losing it once we get it, or what we have to give up in order to achieve it. Imagine this, it is like driving to Disney with a foot on the gas and foot on the brake. Here are steps to breakthrough your biggest barriers, destroy the Mixed Associations, achieve your top goals, and live a life of purpose and fulfillment.

What is the ultimate pleasure of getting what you want? Describe all the pleasure you will now experience once you achieve your outcome or goal. How will this impact you? Impact your life? Health? Family? Your ability to impact others and contribute at an even greater level?

Take massive and consistent action. This is a must. You must commit to your massive action. No dabbling, go all in. You must also commit to stay the course. Going to the gym only one day will not give you the results you want no matter how hard you work out. If you answered questions 2 and 3 strong enough, the pain will drive you, and the pleasure will pull you.

E2! E2 stands for Empowering Environment. Remember who you spend time with is who you become and sometimes what is really missing is who you are NOT spending time with. Who do you need for your life to help you to stay on track? Who can coach you? Support you? Tell you what you don’t want to hear but what you must hear. Join a tribe of like-minded people. In closing, remember this, never give up on your biggest dreams. You have the ability to achieve almost anything you desire in life. Life is not a straight line nor is it always easy. If you believe in yourself, find someone who believes in you, and never give up, you will amaze even yourself. Now go out there and kick the world in its teeth!!

Get clear on what you want: Often we lack clarity of what we want. Be specific and descriptive. The more real you make it, the more real it feels and the more you will go after it.

Until next month, I wish you love and passion.

What is the ultimate pain of not getting what you want? You have to dig deep until you feel in your gut the consequences of your present state and the consequences of not achieving your outcome or goal. When you think you are deep enough, go even deeper. 24

Reaching Your Goals for Intimacy in 2017 Dianna Palimere

If you’re like many people, the beginning of a new year is a time of self-reflection and an opportunity to create new goals for personal growth or change. Are you single, but would like to be in a relationship? Are you in a relationship, but would like more closeness and connection? Perhaps more fun, excitement or passion? All of these are attainable, with time and commitment to the work necessary to achieve your goals. Where to start… Take some time to quietly reflect on the present state of your life and what your ideal state would look like. What might have to happen for you to achieve that ideal? In order for most behavior change to be successful, writing out an action plan is recommended. Given the need to have daily, weekly, and monthly action steps toward goals, I’d suggest starting with a blank journal or utilizing a planner that has both weekly and daily calendar sections. For the initial brainstorming phase, you’ll want to create three columns on a blank page, with the following labels for each column: What is the current state of my life/relationship/situation? What would I like it to be like? What would I need to do or change, to have my ideal? To the best of your ability, fill in each of the columns. 26

These can be revisited and revised, as you continue the work over the coming months. Basic Elements When working on the creation of a happier or healthier sexual self or sexual relationship, there are several integral aspects that require focus. These can be added to your middle column, “What would I need to do or change, to have my ideal?” These include: Self-awareness and mindfulness; quality time; positive thoughts and behaviors; words of praise and appreciation; and physical touch. These five areas will be part of your daily journal. Weekly Steps At the beginning of each week, write down your goals or intentions for that week. For example: Plan a date night, be more affectionate, verbally express love and appreciation, etc. Daily Steps Each day, explore those five areas and write down what you’ve done that day, to work on each action step. Self-awareness and mindfulness: What did you do today to be present and in the moment? If new insights were gained, did you communicate these to your partner? Quality time: What did you do today to give undivided attention to your partner? If you’re not in a relationship, what did you do

today as an act of self-care or self-love?

Positive thoughts and behaviors: What was the best part of your day? What are you most grateful for?

Finally, as you periodically reflect on your progress, be sure to take time to celebrate the hard work and dedication you’ve put forth to achieve your goals for a happier, healthier sex life. This might include a romantic weekend away, or a more elaborate date night.

Words of praise or appreciation: What did you do or say to express love or appreciation? If not in a relationship, this would include positive self-talk; daily affirmations; etc. Physical touch: What effort was made today for affection? This would include hugging, kissing and cuddling. If not in a relationship, what was done today to have needs for physical touch met? This might include getting a pedicure, a massage, or taking time alone for self-pleasuring.

Wishing all of you a happy and healthy New Year!

Bi-monthly Check-in

If there are any particular areas of difficulty, is this due to outside obstacles? Are these things that can be changed? If the obstacle is due to your partner, have you spent time exploring their thoughts and feelings, to better understand what might be happening for them? If the issue to due to an inner obstacle, what stops you? Have you made and effort to communicate your thoughts and feelings about this with your partner?

Five Simple Actions That Can Really Change Your Life Dr. Scott E. Rosenthal

Have you been throwing all of your effort (and money) into making positive changes, yet nothing seems to work? If you’re interested in avoiding wasted time and money and preserving peace-of-mind, this article is for you. Here are the most profound actions that have impacted my life. There are more, but these are the absolute heavy hitters.

Having too much sugar in your diet is one of the greatest factors leading to diseases such as metabolic syndrome, obesity, cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes—conditions that can dramatically rob you of quality and years of life. Even when not facing a major disease, regular refined sugar consumption picks away at your overall life-enjoyment. It can make you feel sluggish or moody, and have frequent colds, sinus infections or yeast overgrowth. It may prevent you from achieving or maintaining a healthy weight.

Disclaimer: Upon reading these steps, you may hear that little voice that tries to talk you out of taking action. Here’s how you handle your inner sabotaging naysayer: every time it whispers in your ear, state with conviction, “Cancel, Cancel!” Ignoring and silencing this voice is that easy. Go ahead and try it. Repeat as necessary.

Besides a few days of serious craving, dumping the sugar habit is easier than you think, especially once you start feeling the benefits! Healthy sugar choices are fine in moderation (fruit, etc.). It’s all about avoiding the products with processed or refined sugar such as cake, cookies, sweetened drinks and candy. Artificial sugar substitutes are not recommended and you will want to avoid or greatly limit eating “white” carbohydrate foods such as white flour, white potatoes, white rice or corn.

1. Leave the Sugar for the bees

2. Do Interval Exercises 2-3 Times per Week

What makes refined sugar such a problem? For one, research has demonstrated that the “available evidence in humans shows that sugar and sweetness can induce reward and craving that are comparable in magnitude to those induced by addictive drugs.”1

Interval training is the most efficient way to receive the benefits of exercise. It consists of alternating low and high intensity activity performed in a single session lasting between 9-30 minutes. The high intensity portion quickly uses up the fuel stored in the muscles. This causes your body to pull energy from the blood

stream and stimulates the breakdown of fat. Interval training over time causes a useful adaption for survival and increases the ability of your body to store calories in the muscles, instead of as fat. One additional benefit found in interval training compared to other forms of exercise, such as low-intensity aerobics, is that calories are burned continuously for hours following a workout. Once you stop doing low-intensity, long duration exercise, you discontinue burning almost immediately. Other benefits range from an improved cardiovascular system to enhanced immune function.

Tips for performing an interval training routine: Use your favorite piece of cardio equipment (I prefer to alternate between a stationary bicycle, stair-climber and elliptical machine). Start at a very low intensity setting accomplishing about 50% of your target heart rate for 2-3 minutes. Increase the tension enough to achieve about 70-90% of your target heart rate or to the point where you feel like you “run out of gas” after about 10-60 seconds (depending on your fitness level). Changing the tension is superior to just going faster- it wears less on your joints and prevents injury. Follow the high intensity with another 2-3-minute period with no or little tension while your heart rate drops back down. Repeat about 6 times with high intensity and end with a 3-5 minute cool down. Perform on an empty stomach- preferably in the morning before breakfast (this dramatically increases your results). Take at least one day off in between work outs for adequate recovery and to avoid the fat-stimulating effects of over-exercising. Although interval training can be modified and performed safely with most individuals, it is demanding on the heart, lungs and muscles. Please check with your doctor prior to starting a routine.

4. Meditate The physical and emotional benefits derived from meditation are astounding. It’s not about just clearing the mind to a blank screen, but maintaining a prolonged focus of the thinking mind. This is accomplished by sustaining one’s mental attention on a single object. Quieting the distractions created by the barrage of thoughts experienced regularly becomes the single objective. One form of mediation in yoga uses the words “So” and “Hum” as the objects of focus. The word “So” is silently stated in the mind during the inhalation, followed by “Hum” on the exhalation. Besides being associated with the sounds of the flowing breath, they translate into the words, “I am that.” This means: I am part of all creation. This method is easy to perform and effective for both the beginner and advanced meditator. If you prefer, you may use a favorite prayer or appropriate word of choice. Consider a daily meditation period of 20 minutes. To learn precise steps and recommendations to complete your meditation practice, please read “Uncover the Extraordinary with Meditation!” Also found under the articles tab at RosenthalChirorpactic.com.

5. Add Time to your Sleep Sleep is when you fill your energy savings account. Most people fail to get adequate sleep. Unfortunately, it is less effective to sleep longer in the morning. The best way to make gains is to retire to bed earlier each day. As little as 30 minutes can profoundly change how you charge into the coming day. The above strategies from my personal game plan are proven to bring significant benefits to your life. They are time-tested and an investment that will pay back great returns. Start with them all or one at a time. You may feel younger and better than in years, while solving some of your greatest health challenges. If you are thinking about putting this article aside without taking any action, please give an emphatic, “Cancel, Cancel!”

3. Receive a Chiropractic Check-up People are amazed by how much better they feel when the stresses, restrictions and pressures from daily life are removed. Studies have shown that regular chiropractic care can help you get the most out of life and avoid pain. This means better performance for athletes or workers on the job and lower rates of hospitalization and nursing home use among the elderly (just to name a few). Regular chiropractic users were found to save thousands of dollars each year in health care costs and have fewer medical interventions. In order to better understand this strategy, please read “Why Do Chiropractors Try to Keep You Coming In?” found under the articles tab at RosenthalChirorpactic.com. www.livingwellmagazine.net

The Touch Bar places controls right at your fingertips and adapts to different apps to provide useful functions without having to navigate complex menus or memorize keyboard shortcuts. Replacing the function keys in the top row of the keyboard, the Touch Bar features a Retina-quality display and supports multi-touch input.

Mac Book Pro 15” with Touch Bar The power button has been upgraded with a Touch ID sensor, so you can quickly log into your MacBook Pro using your fingerprint. You can also use Touch ID to make purchases over the web, thanks to Apple Pay. Touch ID enables a quick, accurate reading of your fingerprint and uses sophisticated algorithms to recognize and match it with the Secure Enclave in the Apple T1 chip. 30

The system features a 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5 dual-core processor, 8GB of 2133 MHz LPDDR3 onboard memory, a 256GB PCIe-based SSD, four Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) ports, a 46% larger Force Touch trackpad, a keyboard with a 2nd-gen butterfly mechanism, stereo speakers with double the dynamic range of its predecessor as well as improved bass, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2 wireless technology, and even a 3.5mm headphone jack. macOS Sierra is the installed operating system.

Apple has had a very controversial year this year with their flagship products. On the iPhone they removed the headphone jack and on the MacBook Pro they only provided 4 USB-C ports, which requires the user to use adapters to interface with their technology. If you read that above sentence and interpreted it as someone who is bitter with these choices, you couldn't be more wrong. Apple is setting the field for the next generation of technology. With Apple’s new MacBook Pro with TouchBar, Apple is forcing the industry to make some big decisions. The only way that we can advance to the most cutting edge technology is to make a few people unhappy and force an evolution to technology that is most appropriate for the time that we are living in. The MacBook Pro with TouchBar is an amazing machine that is opening the floodgates to new innovations industry wide. If you need a new laptop, you might as well get the best and thats the MacBook Pro with TouchBar.
