words from the editors and publishers:

July rolls in with a bang…literally. Longer days, slowly transforming into a warm night air enhanced by bright lights and loud noises, letting us know that it is time to sport our glorious red, white, and blue. We find ourselves having fallen into a summerlike trance never taking noticing of the multitude of uninvited guests flying all around us, seemingly sharing in the festivities, but never on the guest list. Waiting to make one of the invited guests a surreptitious meal. All traces of any of the remaining winter blues are long gone, making it hard to remember the snow that once covered all of the lush greenery, gardens and unwanted growth that has quickly replaced it. Lawn mowers having long replaced snow blowers but without a moment’s notice we will find ourselves once again trading the warmth for colder temperatures once again. How fortunate we are to live in an area of the world that experiences the ever constant change in seasons. A little less humidity would be good. We must have something to complain about. A reader once asked how our featured Style File person one month could have listed a particular perfume as one of their favorites, when at the same time Earth Talk was discussing the carcinogens in perfume and cologne. The answer is simple. It’s a choice. A choice that each of us makes as individuals to take the information that is shared and either implement that Advertising Inquiries: information, fully, partially or not at all. This is why living well is so subjective depending on who is attempting to describe their definition of living well. Outdoor Grilling Tips Experts warn that while tasty and fun BBQs do pose some risks. For example studies show that grilling protein-rich meat on an excessively high flame and heat may prompt the release of cancer-causing agents. Experts therefore advise the “low and slow” approach, cooking on a low flame and even marinating meat for a half hour beforehand to help prevent charring. Another

suggestion: pre-cook meats in the microwave, to reduce grill time and pre-trim the fat to prevent flare-ups.

they advise:

At the same time experts at the U.S. Department of Agriculture warn that it is critical to use separate cutting boards, dishes and utensils for raw and cooked ingredients and to grill foods thoroughly in order to prevent exposure to harmful bacteria. Using a food thermometer is key, they say given that grilled meat and chicken tend to brown fast on the outside, which can be misleading. And on that note

A few little known facts about your toothbrush: $199.99

Americans spend over $850 million a year on toothbrushes. Putting a plastic cap on your toothbrush can cause bacteria growth by trapping in moisture.

The first known toothbrush originated in China in 1948 (made out of bamboo with hog bristles). The first modern toothbrush with nylon was introduced in 1938 by the DuPont company. The world¹s most expensive toothbrush is Philip¹s FlexCare Plus at a price of $199.99. According to Lemison-MIT Invention Index, the toothbrush was selected as the number one invention that Americans could not live without. www.livingwellmagazine.net

Lyme disease is very rampant

in the Northeastern parts of the United States.

Q:

I hear a lot about Lyme disease in our area. I live in the southeastern part of Pennsylvania. I know dogs can get it but not sure about cats. I have 2 cats that go outside sometimes and I wanted to know if they can get Lyme disease.

A:

Lyme disease is rampant in the Northeastern parts of the United States. It is particularly high in the southeastern part of the state of Pennsylvania. Lyme disease is carried by ticks and is caused by a bacterium, classified as a spirochete, called Borrelia burgdorferi. Lyme disease is carried by infected blacklegged deer ticks. Presently, it is found in both the United States and Canada. Lyme disease is found in all states in this country, except Hawaii. It was Dr. Willy Burgdorfor who discovered the spirochete and the connection between the deer tick and Lyme disease. He was actually studying Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever prior to investigation Lyme disease. It was in 1982 that he was honored by his medical colleagues by naming the organism after him. Presently, it is found in both the United States and Canada. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of human Lyme disease cases has been greater than 30,000 a year in the United States. Lyme disease is transmitted by the deer tick and possibly other ticks. That tick must take a blood meal from an infected animal and then bite the host, be that a dog, cat, human or other mammal. It takes two to four days for a tick to transmit Lyme disease. Symptoms in canines can range from intermittent, alternating, limb lameness to kidney failure and blindness. In other words, you might notice your dog limping on his right hind leg today and then it resolves. In a few days or a few weeks he comes up lame on his front left leg and that may resolve or it may get more severe. In any case, any lameness in your pet should be examined by your veterinarian. It could be a treatable disease like Lyme or it could be more severe and life-threatening condition like osteosarcoma (bone cancer). As far as the question of whether Lyme disease exists in cats, it seems there are differing opinions. The simple answer to

the question is that yes cats can get Lyme disease. The opinions differ when it comes to how prone they are to the disease. The amount of time a cat spends grooming itself makes it less likely that a tick would be able to stay attached for two to four days in order to transmit the disease. It is also thought that perhaps cats, most of the time, do not get sick with the disease. Additionally, some suggest that cats may be naturally resistant to getting ill from Lyme disease. Others suggest that cats are, in fact, affected by Lyme disease and are being dismissed as other problems. Suffice it to say that if your cat or dog is acting unusual or acting differently, you should pay attention and take them to the veterinarian. In my opinion, the longer a disease has to gain a foothold in your pet’s body, the more serious the condition will become. Be proactive and do the right thing. Have your dogs and cats examined at least once a year, by a veterinarian, more frequently, if they are more than 10 years old. The easiest way to decrease your cat’s chance of being bitten by a tick is to keep them indoors and away from the tall grass and wooded locations. If your cat does go outside it is prudent to check their hair coat when they come back inside. Many ticks can be found on the tops of grass. When your cat smells the grass or even ingests it, it is possible for the tick to get on their nose and climb up to the eyebrow and attach. So make sure you check their face when they come inside. These ticks are very small and can easily be missed. There are a number of products on the market to try to repel ticks, some more toxic than others. Some of the all natural products contain neem, yarrow, oils plus more. These work just as well, but may need to be applied more frequently than once a month. Not too bad considering it decreases the toxic load on your pet. Please Note: There was typo in the June issue. Please note that 2.2 lbs equals 1 kilogram not the other way around.

Hunger is a growing problem around the world, in both developing and developed countries. As our population continues to rise, the amount of arable land per capita is declining and climate change is either drying out or flooding many formerly productive agricultural belts, making it more and more difficult to keep up with the growing demand for food. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reports that we must produce 70 percent more food globally if we are to feed the world’s increasing numbers of hungry people in the coming decades. While more efficient agricultural practices can help, conservationists are increasingly looking to the ocean as a potential way out of our hunger woes. According to Oceana, a leading non-profit dedicated to protecting the world’s oceans and marine biodiversity, wild seafood “requires no fresh water, produces little carbon dioxide, doesn’t use up any arable land and provides healthy, lean protein at a cost per pound lower than beef, chicken, lamb and pork, making it accessible to the world’s poor.” But like other natural resources, fish stocks have also been in decline in recent years as a result of decades of overfishing. “The global fish catch peaked in the late 1980s and has been declining ever since,” reports Oceana. Indeed, data show the amount of fish caught around the world has fallen by some 18 percent over the last three decades. “If current trends continue, we’ll only have enough wild seafood to feed half the world’s population in 2050,” says the group. But that downward trend could be reversed by overhauling fisheries management, protecting fish spawning and breeding habitat and reducing by-catch (the incidental catch of species not targeted by fishermen). In areas where fisheries managers 12

have been able to set catch limits based on fish biology instead of industry interests, seafood populations have started to bounce back. Likewise, fish stocks have recovered significantly in the water column in and around Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and other critical “no-fish” zones. “These are steps that have been proven to restore stocks of fish wherever they have been implemented,” adds Oceana. “While it’s counterintuitive, by imposing limits to what we catch today we will actually be able to increase the amount of fish that we catch tomorrow.” The group cites research showing that “sensible management” could increase fish yields up to 40 percent and increase the biomass in the oceans by almost 60 percent. “If managed wisely, our fisheries could provide the world with 700 million nutritious meals every day.” Through its “Save the Oceans, Feed the World Campaign,” Oceana is focusing its efforts on convincing national governments in countries that dominate the world’s fish catch to manage their own fisheries better. The fact that each coastal country is in control of an “exclusive economic zone” extending 200 nautical miles from shore and that these shallow near-shore waters contain the vast majority of marine life means that convincing a few key governments to reign in overfishing can make a world of difference.

Driverless Cars? SciFi or Coming Soon? Just a decade ago most of us wouldn’t have dreamed we’d live to see driverless cars whisking people around, but things are changing fast and analysts now think they will be common by 2020 and account for the majority of cars on the road by 2040. And with Google’s recent unveiling of its latest prototype—complete with no pedals or steering wheel—the future is indeed closer than we ever imagined. Proponents argue that driverless cars—also called “autonomous cars”—are inherently more sustainable than their manned counterparts. For one, they say, once they are widely available many of us will forego owning our own cars in favor of carsharing, whereby the autonomous vehicle comes to you, charged and ready to go, as needed. Thus the result could be far fewer cars on the road than today. According to Steve Gutmann of the Seattle-based sustainability think tank Sightline Institute, such a car-sharing scenario would also obviate the need for many parking spaces. Today the typical private car spends upwards of 90 percent of its time parked. Once we have more driverless cars, we’ll need far fewer parking spaces, leading to less land being paved and reducing storm water runoff and heat island effects accordingly. The networked brains of these vehicles will also reduce inefficient routes and decrease overall driving time, leading to better air quality and lower carbon emissions. Also, the increased safety of driverless vehicles—they obey speed limits, can sense people, bikes and other cars coming toward them, and accelerate and brake much more gradually than human drivers—will mean that the cars can be lighter and require far fewer resources in manufacturing, reducing their overall environmental impact even further. On the flip side, the advent of driverless cars means that many of us now not able to drive because of age or physical handicaps will be able to use these cars to get around, potentially leading to an

increase in the number of cars on the road. And Chandra Bhat of the Center for Transportation Research at the University of Texas points out that just because a car is driverless doesn’t mean we’ll want it to be smaller, lighter and more fuel efficient. He fears that driverless cars will engender a return to larger vehicles because people will want “more comfortable space” when they are free to stretch out, relax, read, videochat, text or even nap during their trips. He adds that driverless cars could lead to more urban sprawl as car commuting becomes more tolerable without the hassle of actually driving. Bhat also wonders what will become of the public transit systems we’ve invested so heavily in if driverless cars offer the same advantages—using the time en route to do whatever one pleases—with the added benefit of privacy and route/timing flexibility. Today four U.S. states—Nevada, Florida, California and Michigan—allow driverless cars on their public roads for the purpose of testing; several other states are considering similar allowances. Likewise, in 2013 the United Kingdom began allowing the testing of driverless cars on its public roadways. Besides Google, several leading automakers and other companies have developed their own prototypes. Car enthusiasts can expect to see such examples from the likes of Mercedes-Benz, General Motors, Nissan, Toyota, Audi, Volvo, Tesla and others at auto shows over the next few years, and can look forward to getting “behind the wheel” of one within a decade. Whatever happens, it certainly is going to be quite a ride. CONTACTS: Sightline Institute, www.sightline.org; Chandra Bhat, www.ce.utexas. edu/prof/bhat/home.html. Kale Brownies Vs. Vampires:

How To Extend Your Life Span With Food

Vs. Vampires may live forever, but personally, I’d prefer to extend my lifespan without giving up sunshine and sleeping in beds. Fortunately, there’s a non-supernatural way to live longer! Hint: It does not involve consuming a daily supply of fast food burgers, fries and diet colas. On the contrary, the answer is Fruits and vegetables. Let’s check in on the latest research confirming what our mothers’ have been telling us for years: “Participants who consumed 3 vegetables/day lived 32 months longer than those who never consumed vegetables.” One apple per day can mean a 19 month difference between life and death.1 Women in their 70’s with the most carotenoids (colorful plant pigments, that body can turn into vitamin A, are powerful antioxidants) in their blood streams were twice as likely to survive five years than those with the lowest.2

6 strawberries 1 apple 15 grapes 6 cherries (the neon-red ones atop an ice cream sundae do not count!) 5 broccoli florets 10 baby carrots 1 cup romaine lettuce I suggest a renewed motivation to eat more Fruits and vegetables and not worry too much about the exact quantities. Lean towards more vegetables and be careful not to sugar-out on only fruits. In consideration of the proportion of fruits to vegetables, try to make it about 2/3 veggies and 1/3 fruit. It is also preferred to consume fruits in the morning. Avoid juices unless they are fresh squeezed and consumed right after being processed.

You can double your likelihood of survival by just eating more fruits and vegetables.

Fresh is always better and organic is preferred. Go raw often! Raw Fruits and vegetables contain many of the life-extending nutrients in higher quantities. Go for the rich colors of green, red and yellow. The darker the better!

“If older adults increased food expenditure by $.50 per day, with vegetables they would have 12% lower all-cause mortality, and with fruit, a 10% lower all-cause mortality.”3

Smoothies are a great morning treat packed with fruits and vegetables. You will be surprised how much kale, spinach or — continued on next page

Nutritional gurus recommend that you eat between five to nine servings of vegetables per day. This amount varies based on gender, age and activity. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) sets a serving size for vegetables to be the amount of about one-half cup. Greens like lettuce or kale have a serving size equal to one full cup.

lettuce (yes, lettuce!) you can pack into your smoothie and not even taste it. Throw in half a cup of blueberries and the green color will turn an attractive deep purple. Several meals each week can consist of a giant salad. It tastes great, is a quick meal without lighting the oven and can account for many veggie servings. Throw on some good proteins such as a pile of garbanzo beans to make it a satisfying meal. Veggie-up wherever you can. Making a soup? Finely chop some of your favorite greens and drop them in. Mix fresh chives into your scrambled eggs or a few cups of fresh spinach. How about an extra leaf or two of lettuce on your sandwich? Puree fresh red pepper slices or a handful of parsley into you hummus. Eat it with pepper, celery and carrot strips rather than pita chips or crackers. I recently made brownies at my kid’s request. Fortunately, they were busy in the other room and I had time to be creatively green without objection. I put the eggs and melted butter in my highspeed Vitamix blender and pureed in several kale leaves with the stems and large ribs removed. Although my nine-year-old pulled a small piece of kale from her teeth with a confused look, the brownies were devoured. For more ideas on how to integrate Fruits and vegetables into your diet, please visit rosenthalchiropractic.com and view past Living.Well Magazine articles on juicing, sprouting, raw foods, smoothies and my favorite vegetable all-star––lettuce. Generous amounts of fruits and vegetables taste great, are easy to integrate into your diet and may lengthen your life span! Not only will an apple a day keep the doctor away, but may also keep the reaper at bay. Best of all, you can enjoy eating them in the sun!

YOUTH STRENGTH TRAINING

Danny Singles, PT, DPT, MA

How many of you have kids with jam-packed summers? For many disciplined young athletes, the end of the school year and the start of summertime can mean off-season training for school or club sports. Often, this includes a strength training, cross-training, or endurance training regimen to get them ready for the fall season. In kids, a part of this training should involve an appropriate amount of rest. Do not underestimate the importance of active rest (note: this does NOT mean you have permission to sit on your butt and play Call of Duty or Minecraft all summer). Instead, think of it as an active rest that involves activities different than your child’s sport of choice. Strength training is one way to vary your young athlete’s workout routine that can provide benefits to 18

game day muscles without the wear and tear of competing every day of the summer.

Throughout this article, we will review some of the myths and realities of what strength training entails for youth ages 6 and up. What ages can participate? Is it safe? Can you even make gains? Who should do it? How do you do it? Ok, let’s get started. First, we should define what strength training is and is not.

www.livingwellmagazine.net

— continued from previous page

What is strength training? According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, it is “the use of resistance methods to increase one’s ability to exert or resist force. The training may utilize free weights, body weight, weight machines, elastic tubing, or other resistance devices to attain this goal.” Strength training is also known as “resistance training.” Now that we know what it is, what is NOT strength training?

Strength training is NOT bodybuilding or powerlifting. It is important to draw the distinction. Bodybuilding is “a competition in which muscle size, symmetry, and definition are judged.” Powerlifting/weightlifting, on the other hand, is “a competitive sport which involves max lifting ability.” With bodybuilding, think Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1977 documentary, Pumping Iron. Powerlifters and weightlifters, on the other hand, would be more similar to the athletes who compete in the Olympics.

Is there a minimum age requirement to strength train safely? It depends. If certain conditions are met, kids as young as 6 years old can safely participate in strength training activities. To be safe, a child must demonstrate the following: • emotional maturity (ex: “There’s no crying in baseball!”) • discipline (follow the plan) • good listening skills (ummm… what did you say?) • body awareness, basic motor skills, and coordination (“do the hokey-pokey”)

consult a medical professional before starting your kids on any workout program. Is there an increased injury risk for kids who begin strength training? Yes and no. Traditionally, the common misconception is that risk of increased injury, stunted growth, and lifelong deformity will occur in kids who strength train. Much of this is due to several lower quality studies from 30-40 years ago. More recent findings backed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, National Strength and Conditioning Association, American College of Sports Medicine, and the scientific literature have indicated that this is not true. While some risk is always present, current literature suggests that there is no greater risk of injury from youth strength training than there is from participating in any other sport. The vast majority of injuries come from improperly following or progressing training programs, lack of appropriate supervision, or faulty program design. Strength training can be safe and effective for kids who: • receive a pre-participation medical evaluation (from a trained medical professional) • demonstrate the necessary skills to handle a training program (see previous paragraph) • follow age appropriate strength training guidelines (do you know them?) • perform exercises with proper form and supervision (Dad, Uncle Jim, or a 14 year old best friend generally do not qualify here) If all of these conditions are met, strength training can be an appropriate, safe, and fun way to exercise.

• ability to follow directions (ex: “Bark like a chicken!”) • dedication to the program (Yoda says: “You must complete the training!”) Team sports require essentially the same skill set. Generally speaking, if a child is mature enough to handle competitive organized team sports, they could potentially participate in some form of strength training. Now, this does not mean they can jump right in, unsupervised, with complex and multi-joint lifts or other high intensity activities. What it means is that under appropriate supervision (by trained and qualified personnel who understand the unique demands of working with children), they could begin a specifically tailored program focusing on building strength, coordination, and balance in major muscle groups. Often, simple body weight exercises like planks, pushups, crunches, or balance work are more than enough to begin. All exercises have appropriate modifications to adjust difficulty depending on a child’s base fitness level. Do not assume that just because you have done some strength training, you know how to teach your child. Your personal ego could get them hurt. Use common sense and

Are gains in strength even possible for kids? Again, not to sound like a broken record here, but yes and no. For pre-pubescent children, some minimal gains in strength can occur. Even though a child might notice slight increases in muscle size, what primarily happens instead is a cool trick of our nervous system. Instead of building muscle bulk, the child becomes more efficient at using what they already have. Improved nervous system efficiency and improved body control are the primary mechanisms for strength gains in pre-pubescent children. Post-puberty, however, gains in strength can occur more dramatically as muscles increase in size and length with the changes that puberty brings. Flexibility becomes very important here. As bones go through growth spurts, muscles need to keep up. Without stretching, muscles get too tight and can possibly contribute to several different painful conditions. It is also important to note that both girls and boys can benefit from strength training – this is not just a guy thing.

Who should do it? How should you go about getting started? Anyone can do it. Before you start, however, the first step is to gauge your child’s interest. Forcing an adult mindset or training model on a child is a huge mistake and could result in injury, burnout, or lack of interest in healthy physical activity. Nothing can wreck a child’s enjoyment of an activity more quickly than excessive pressure from parents, coaches, or others; it can ruin a lifetime of being fit. If the child is emotionally ready, the next step is to consult a medical professional to make sure the child has no preexisting conditions or injuries that would limit participation. Once this has been accomplished, the last step is identifying a qualified individual who has the experience and training. Working with adults is totally different than working with children or young adults. Teaching proper form, safety, and encouraging a healthy lifestyle are of utmost importance with kids. But, adult-driven training philosophies that are focused on body image, performance, or amount of weight should not be emphasized – it should remain about fun and safe habits that encourage overall health. Keep in mind, the best strength training is time spent on a playground – it mixes all types of activities.

This column is only a starter on this subject. For those of you who have an interest, listed below are several resources. Feel free to check them out and ask questions – they are encouraged. In a later article, I will go into some of the current age appropriate exercise guidelines for children. While body weight exercise, traditional weights, or resistance bands might not be for everyone, there are literally dozens of other options to mix it up. Activities such as rock climbing, swimming, and other sports can use different sets of muscles and help your child develop into a stronger and more balanced athlete. Any kind of strength training (if performed properly under appropriate supervision) can build strength, endurance, athletic skills, and help prevent injury and burnout during increasingly lengthy youth sports seasons. Now, take a break from the year-round sports and try something else for the summer.

MADE EASY

2014

In the June issue, we featured a new Drill from Black and Decker called the Quick Connect Matrix system. That product has very quickly become one of the handiest tools in my ever expanding tool box. The Matrix Quick Connect is a handy power system running on a long lasting (20v Lithium) that has several useful attachments and plenty of power to get the job done without losing power.

Finally, a set of tool boxes that can keep me organized and not break my back trying to carry it. Recently Dewalt® introduced the new TSTAK™ which is the latest in a line of innovative storage solutions by Dewalt® for all of your power tools and hand tools. The new TSTAK™ features front wheel casters that swivel 360 degrees and heavy duty air back wheels for easy maneuverability. Side latches provide secure stacking so that it stays intact. It has a three position telescopic handle. The trolley is seamless in helping you get all of your tools in one location making projects quick and easy not having to search for the right tool anymore. Available: Lowes and Home Depot 26

Last week, the pool filter in our pool developed a leak through the multi-port control valve (top of the filter) after figuring out the problem and purchasing the part, I realized I had to cut a piece of the PVC pipe to get the old part off. Normally I would have either had to cut it by hand or use my electric Sawzall (which is one of my favorite power tools), but the time it takes to set it up, change the blade, run an extension cord, etc. I could just opt to cut it by hand. Now with my new Black and Decker Quick Connect Matrix tool I used the Quick Connect Sawzall attachment and cut the two pieces of pipe, and changed it back into a cordless drill to finish the job, all in less than 10 minutes. This is a great product to add to your DIY arsenal for those (simple) projects, but don’t underestimate the 20v cordless battery, it has a much longer running time and plenty of power then most of its competitors. That’s why I am personally awarding it with our prestigious Tried & True Award…Brian Strauss

TECH ADDICT: WITH SEAN

My current top 5 paid games for iOS in no particular order.

I have been playing games on my iPhone since it released way back in the day. Before the App Store, the only way to get games on your phone was to jailbreak it, which at the time was a major pain in the butt. With the introduction of the App Store, a mobile gaming revolution has started and changed the way games are played. Making hardcore gamers out of people that never gave a thought to playing video games. This is my top five list of games that have consumed many hours of my life. Walking Dead $4.99 an episode /5 episodes in a season

to take what you have. When I play this game, I like to think of myself as Captain Kirk, except Kirk would probably do a better job than me. Managing power for your different systems from defense to offense is a very satisfying puzzle in its self, especially when you are being attacked and you are losing power, or they took out your Oxygen generator, or you have a fire and you have to open the airlock to put it out. This game is very unforgiving and in my many hours of play, I have only been able to reach the last level once. If you are looking for a strategy game and want to prepare for your role in Starfleet, this is a game you don’t want to miss. Leo’s Fortune $4.99

Have you ever watched the Walking Dead and felt that certain characters made some seriously dumb decisions when trying to survive the zombie apocalypse? You think you can survive better? Get ready to make your own life or death decisions in The Walking Dead game on iOS. The game is set in the same world as AMC’s hit show and shifts the focus to different characters facing the zombie apocalypse. The game is set up in seasons and right now they are in the middle of season 2, and I am eagerly awaiting more. The decisions that you make will allow you to be in control, instead of just yelling at the TV. Choosing who gets to eat that day or choosing between 2 people who will live and who will die, the heart wrenching nature of the show is brought to the next level. Threes $1.99 Threes is the kind of game that will keep you up very late at night trying to beat your score and your friends. Starting out with a 4x4 board you must try and add 3s up to the highest number you can. 2+1 can be added together and after that 3+3 and then 6+6, as high as you can go with the limited room that you have at hand. This game will hurt your brain, but it is worth it for the satisfaction of beating your dad’s score…. FTL (iPad only) $9.99

FTL is a game that puts you in the position of Captain of your own personal starship. This starship has weapons, teleports, oxygen, and shields, and it is up to you to manage their operation while navigating through space and encountering other ships that want

Leo is an unlikely hero in this adventure about a man trying to figure out who stole his treasure. Leo is a green ball with giant eyes and a mustache that I am extremely jealous of and he also has the ability to puff himself up like a balloon to make traversing the world possible. When I say that a game is a platformer, what I am saying is that it plays in a similar style to a game like Mario or Mega Man. For me, Leo’s Fortune is the first platformer that I have played on my iOS device that I did not want throw my iPad due to frustrating controls. This game is beautiful and plays as smoothly as Mario, all using touch screen virtual controls. Warning, do not show this game to your friend’s kids, because they will use their puppy dog eyes to make their parents buy it for them, which they should. Blek $2.99

Blek is a very unique game, in an App Store that has been flooded with too many Flappy Bird clones. Blek is very minimalistic in its presentation, but just touching the screen lets you know exactly what you have to do. Every time you touch your screen to draw a line, depending on speed and shape the line will repeat itself over and over again, until it is off your screen or sucked up by a black dot. Your goal is to remove colored balls from the screen with your line, while avoiding any black dots. Blek is a lot of trial and error to achieve your goal, but when you do, it is very satisfying. It is also a beautiful game; the best way that I can describe it is calligraphy in motion. I hope you will check out my top choices for games right now, these are all great games and well worth the money if you have any other topics you would like to see me write about hit me up on Twitter @maskedbluntman

Please, Don’t Try to Be Positive By Suzanne Eder An interesting thing often occurs when people begin to recognize their negative patterns of thinking and seek to shift toward a more positive orientation: It doesn’t work. And what I mean by “working” is, they don’t actually feel more at peace or more optimistic, and their lives don’t really start flowing in a more fulfilling way. Things pretty much stay the same, except now they’ve developed either an annoying habit of being inauthentic…or they’ve given up and dropped to a new level of resignation and cynicism.

simply put, as you think, so you create.

Let me back up here a moment to enthusiastically acknowledge that learning to shift your orientation, your perspective, your thoughts and your language to a more positive place is a very worthwhile thing to do. As you think, believe and speak, so you act and attract. Your thoughts and beliefs and language have a vibrational reality to them that tunes you to certain frequencies and probabilities. Or more

The old pattern of thinking is still present and vibrating, muffled a bit beneath the veneer of positive words but not being addressed. So it still has a powerful influence over what they are attracting into their lives.

So when you shift your thinking, you open yourself to insights, inspiration, people and opportunities you simply didn’t have access to before. You literally move to a different platform from which to create and live your life. It’s potent stuff, and that’s why so many people teach it and so many The reason why trying to be positive, or trying to think in a people want to master it. positive way, often doesn’t work is that it’s being used as a mere technique rather than an opportunity for greater self- Yet the desire to master it can generate a sense of enthusiasm awareness and the recognition of deeper truths. There’s also a bordering on urgency that causes many people to railroad strong element of self-judgment and resistance in the energy themselves into positive thinking. They become intolerant of “trying” – people often become frustrated, impatient or of any thought that has even the slightest wisp of negativity even fearful when they catch themselves thinking a negative and immediately paste over it with a positive one. thought, and so they quickly try to obliterate it with a I actually refer to this as the “pasteover.” And I can assure positive one. you that it doesn’t work.

keep thinking negative thoughts, bad things will happen. (Or more benignly, good things won’t happen.) I’ve worked with clients who have become fearful of their own negative thoughts, wondering what unpleasant outcomes they’re in the process of manifesting and being intensely frustrated with themselves for still having negative thoughts.

You’ve accomplished nothing more than contradicting yourself. A far more elegant, loving and effective approach to shifting your thinking looks more like this: you become aware of a negative thought, you pause to acknowledge it, then you become willing to see things in a more loving or empowering way and to consciously choose a different perspective. So it looks like this:

As you might suspect, intolerance, frustration and fear are Negative Thought -- Pause to Acknowledge -- Willingness to hardly the ingredients you want in your recipe for inspired See Differently -- Conscious Choice living. What’s taking place in these scenarios is, fundamentally, this: a negative thought occurs, which is immediately judged as “bad.” The self-judgment stimulates an impulsive reaction to “fix” the negative thought with a positive one. So it’s Negative Thought -- Judgment -- Impulsive Reaction To call on the perhaps overused metaphor of the glass of water (which is overused precisely because of its clarity and simplicity), this approach is akin to seeing 4 ounces of water in an 8-ounce glass and thinking the glass is half-empty…then berating yourself for thinking so negatively and declaring loudly to yourself, “No, damn it, the glass is half-full!” - even though, to your eyes, it still looks half-empty.

Continuing with our glass of water metaphor, this approach runs along the lines of seeing 4 ounces of water in an 8-ounce glass, concluding the glass is half-empty and then pausing to notice the orientation of your conclusion. You say to yourself, “Well, it looks half-empty to me but I’m willing to acknowledge that, technically, it’s also half-full.” In this scenario you’ve honored your current perceptions while also opening to consider other ones. The pause without judgment is essential. It creates the space within which to actually make the shift you want to make, consciously and lovingly, rather than boomeranging into a reaction that is fueled by self-judgment. And let me repeat here something you’ve no doubt heard me say countless times: — continued on next page

Self-judgment will never, ever, ever get you where you want to go. If you view “trying to be positive” as an effort to “fix” your negativity, you’re starting from a place of judgment. There is nothing wrong with you that needs to be fixed. There is an amazing opportunity to learn how to love, honor, support and empower yourself by becoming willing to see things differently. That’s why I no longer encourage people to think positively. I encourage them to think lovingly. Thinking positively often ends up with people trying to convince themselves of something they don’t really believe is true. Thinking lovingly is reminding themselves of the deeper truth of who they are and what is possible for them. Here is a simple example of the difference between the two:

The key to this is noticing how you feel when you talk to or about yourself. It’s certainly possible, when you catch yourself saying, “I look awful,” to refocus your gaze on something you genuinely appreciate about yourself and say, “I really do look fine” – and mean it. In that instance your “I look fine” isn’t a pasteover, it’s a reminder that you’re willing to see your inherent goodness and beauty. So this process isn’t about memorizing words and phrases, it’s about becoming exquisitely sensitive to your own feelings. Trying to be positive when you’re not feels yukky. Being kind and loving to yourself feels – well, kind and loving. Guess which approach is more effective in creating more of what you want in your life?

Let’s say you weigh more than you would prefer to weigh. You have a habit, when seeing yourself in the mirror, of thinking or saying something along the lines of, “My God, I look awful.”

It’s true that your thinking can undermine you or uplift you. But please don’t “try” to be positive. Hold the entire enterprise of shifting from one perspective to the other with lightness, kindness and – whenever possible – humor. It’s life-changing stuff, and so it deserves to be handled with loving care.

This is the quintessential negative thought.

As do you.

In the “I’ve got to fix my negative thoughts by applying positive thoughts” paradigm, you would feel immediate frustration with yourself for continuing to think negative thoughts and then declare, possibly a bit too loudly, “No, I look just fine.” (Even though you really don’t think you do.)

This is the quintessential pasteover. In the “I want to learn how to support myself by aligning my thoughts with my intention” paradigm – what I refer to as loving yourself to fulfillment – you might still feel immediate frustration with yourself for continuing to think negative thoughts. You would pause and take a few deep breaths, then acknowledge this is an old habit of thinking. You would remind yourself that selfjudgment will never get you where you want to go. And then you would say something along the lines of, “I’m going to learn how to love myself to my ideal weight.”

The Code - Leadership Redefined By Joe White I remember I was asked to speak in front of a group of students. I was discussing with them the core principles of leadership that we teach during Coach’s Camp, our world class life coaching certification course. I was going around the class asking each of them, “What do you want to accomplish in your lives?” Their answers ranged from being doctors, mothers, entrepreneurs, but one young girls answer lead us on quite a tangent. She smiled as she enthusiastically said, “I want to change the world.” I asked her how she was planning to do this? She quickly answered, “One person at a time.” I was impressed by her answer and the confidence in the delivery of it. Then a thought came to my head. Could you change the world.... one person at a time... in a negative way? Everyone that day agreed, we are always changing the world...one person at a time...for better or worse. You have a choice to either build or destroy. These choices aren’t either/or and choosing to build does not give you permission to destroy. I believe the term leader gets thrown around too easily. Often leadership training carries more fluff and less substance. Anyone can stand up in a group and say, “I am a leader”, but the true measure is when no one is watching. When you are driving on I95 in rush hour and someone cuts you off, be a leader then. When you are standing in line at the grocery store and the cashier is seeming to move very slowly, be a leader then. A true mark of a leader is being a leader when no one is watching. You lead and you create because it is your choice. You can not just wait and hope that it shows up. It is too easy to sink to a lower common denominator. You must decide who you are going to be. What are your standards? What is your code of conduct? Everything you do will impact another and that in turn will impact others, and so on.

In the end, you choose either the road less traveled or the road which is worn down. It is much easier to travel down the road which is worn but in the end is it more rewarding? Create a list of standards. Your musts and must never’s. Example - “I will not tear others down.” “I won’t engage in gossip communication.” “I will be the person that lets the other driver merge.” These may sound silly or unimportant but the truth is that these can impact others greatly. It is often what you don’t do that impacts just as greatly as what you do do. G Tales of the Wayward G-Spot

top results:

The Gräfenberg Spot, commonly referred to as the G-spot, was named after Dr. Ernst Gräfenberg (a medical doctor and scientist) who studied the role of the urethra in female orgasms in 1944. He described a “zone of erogenous feeling…located along the suburethral surface of the anterior wall of the vagina.” I find it a bit surprising just how many people—men and women, will ask me if the G-spot is “real.” Some women have even expressed that they don’t believe they “have one.” We are talking about a part of female anatomy; which many people seem to be completely clueless about. How is this possible? How can so many people lack such a basic understanding of female anatomy? I have come to the conclusion that because its purpose is for sexual pleasure, it conveniently gets left out of sexuality education (or worse, is considered nonexistent). To make matters worse, should one want to educate themselves, the internet isn’t that much more useful.

“Yes, You Have a G-Spot!” ~Cosmopolitan Magazine

I wanted to see what a layperson would find if they tried to educate themselves on the subject, using the internet. When I entered the word “G-spot” in Google’s search engine, these were some of the

“You’re Complete Guide to Her G-Spot” ~Men’s Health Magazine “G-Spot Finder” ~Esquire Magazine “G-Spot Found?” ~WebMD “Finding the G-Spot: Is it Real?” ~CNN.com As you can see, most of the information is focused on either trying to provide you with a “roadmap” to find it, or information that perpetuates the belief that it may not be “real.” Please note, the WebMD article referenced above is titled, “Vaginal Dissection Reveals Elusive G-Spot, Surgeon Says” and it is not an article that confirms the existence of the G-Spot. Rather, it disputes the findings of a surgeon, because his findings were based on only dissecting one subject. The article begins, “The elusive G-spot has been called the UFO of gynecology -- but now a retired surgeon says he has photographic proof it exists” (DeNoon, 2012). It goes on to refer to the G-spot as “the alleged G-Spot.” Another spoiler: Even CNN found its existence to be inconclusive, because it has — continued on next page

“never been precisely identified as a concrete biological entity.”

Confused?

Elusive? Alleged? A UFO? Wait…what? Alright, I think I get it now. It’s no wonder so many people are completely and utterly confused! Brace yourselves—are you ready? Here’s the truth: The G-spot is not on the run. It is not hiding in a witness protection program. It is not an alien life form. It is not a secret treasure requiring a map or part of a government conspiracy. It is real.

Unfortunately, the best and most accurate pictures I have of this are posters in my office, and I had to order them from Australia. Due to copy write laws and my inability to scan posters of that size, I will have to try to give you the clearest mental illustration I can. The best way to picture this is to imagine a roll of paper towels. The cardboard tube would be the urethra. Surrounding the tube would be a crisscrossing spiral mix of the tissue of the urethral sponge and the clitoral roots. As you can see from Figure 1, this area sits above the vagina and is located approximately 2-3 inches inside, along the anterior vaginal wall.

Anatomy of the Clitoris I’m sure you’re familiar with the anatomy of the clitoris from my previous articles, but just to refresh your memory I’ll review it again. As you know, the clitoris is made up of multiple parts, most of which are hidden beneath the surface of her skin (See Figure 1). Figure 1. Anatomy of the Clitoris

Most people are only familiar with the glans of the clitoris; which is the tip of the clitoral shaft, covered by the clitoral hood (the external parts we can see and feel). The shaft is about ¾ of an inch in length, before splitting and dividing into a wishbone shape. The “legs” of the wishbone are called the clitoral crura (crus in singular), and they arc downward, inside the inner lips of the vulva. The crura surround two clitoral bulbs, which are made up of erectile tissue (Figure 1. Refers to these as “Bulb of vestibule”). As you can see, these internal structures surround the urethral opening. The urethra runs from the opening about two inches in, before connecting to the bladder. Circling the urethra is a ring of tissue (not shown). This ring of spongy tissue is called the corpus spongiosum (urethral sponge) and it fills with blood during arousal to help protect the urethra during penetration, and to compress the urethra, which helps prevent urine from being released. The clitoral nerve is also surrounded by the urethral sponge. The roots/clitoral nerve(s) of the clitoral tissue crisscross with the urethral sponge.

The G-spot is essentially the cluster of clitoral nerves and the erectile tissue along with the urethral sponge; which can be “accessed” vaginally. Given this location, I tell my clients to think of the “G-spot” as the back of the clitoris. Thus, if you are looking from the outside and you are facing the front of the clitoris (the part you can see), to find this area simply insert a finger vaginally, go just past the pubic bone, and use a “come hither” motion with your finger to graze the back of the clitoris. It may take a few tries to find it, as it depends on the individual woman’s body how far in you need to go. Some women will respond more to a circular motion, while others prefer a “tapping” with the finger tip. The reason why it feels so good, and produces an orgasm when massaged is because the clitoral nerves and erectile tissue are being stimulated. Congratulations! You have now found the G-spot. Sorry Dr. Gräfenberg, it seems what you discovered was not a “special erogenous zone,” rather it was the undiscovered internal structures of the female clitoris. But at least you cared enough to do the research studies to learn more, and for that, we thank you!

Ho’oponopono—

Housecleaning for the Soul New Clearing Methods By Dr. Joe Vitale In Zero Limits, bestselling author Joe Vitale revealed the secret of the Hawaiian art of Ho’oponopono, which instantly clears those unconscious programs, even if we don’t know what they are! In his new book At Zero: The Quest for Miracles Through Ho’oponopono (Wiley), Vitale takes us the rest of the way-showing how we can realize our infinite potential and even experience enlightenment with new advanced techniques of Ho’oponopono. This is an excerpt from At Zero: The Quest for Miracles through Ho’oponopono After practicing Ho’oponopono for almost 10 years, it’s clear to me that the Hawaiians have a wonderful tool for clearing the data so that we can hear that still, small voice within, whether we call it God, the Divine, or Nature…As you practice Ho’oponopono, you clear the data in your sub-conscious (Unihipili), which frees you to hear the path the Divine has waiting for you. The more you clear the lower self of its programming, the more your higher self (Aumakua) can guide your way. The more you clean, the more you receive inspiration from the Divine. The only thing to clean is what you feel inside. The only goal is freedom—to be at Zero. The world is made up of data, and it’s that data that needs to be cleaned. But we can only perceive all that data from within. In other words, there’s nothing out there. It’s all inside you. That’s where you experience problems—and that’s where the cleaning needs to be done. But what is the right way to clean? If cleaning is the number one most important thing to do and the core of the entire Zero Limits process, how do you do it accurately?

34

Although there’s no one right way to clean, I’ve found these five ideas work well for me and for others who’ve followed them: 1. Notice something wrong. This can be triggered by a thought, another person, an event, or anything else. This is the stimulus. Before Zero Limits, you notice a problem you consider out there. After Zero Limits, you realize the problem is inside. No one can make you mad or upset; you do that inside yourself from what you perceive outside yourself. Whatever the case, the first step is to notice you don’t feel good. You’re angry, upset, worried, scared, or any other of a wide range of emotions and feelings that could be labeled as unhappy. 2. Start to clean on the feeling. It’s not about cleaning on the other person, the thought, the situation, or anything out there. Again, the problem is inside. I’m the one aware of a problem. I’m the one who has to clean it. Saying, “I love you,” “I’m sorry,” “Please forgive me,” and, “Thank you,” is the way to clean. You can say them in any order. I say them nonstop in my mind while feeling the problem as I perceive it. And I say them to the Divine.

www.livingwellmagazine.net

July 2014

3. You can use other cleaning methods. For example, my mentor Dr. Hew Len explained blue solar water and how it could help us: “Take a blue glass, any color blue, and pour regular tap water into it. Put the bottle in the sunlight or under a light bulb (not fluorescent light) for 15 to 60 minutes. It will solarize the water. You can add it to your drinking water, or any way that you use water. It’s wonderful if you have pets, and in any cooking you do. I love to put it in my laundry. I even spray my car’s tires before I go on a trip. Blue solar water is a cleaning tool. Drink it or use it any way that you’re using water.”

There is more insight into how to make Ho’oponopono work for you, in Joe Vitale’s new book At Zero: The Quest for Miracles through Ho’oponopono, the sequel to his international bestseller, Zero Limits. Excerpted with permission of the publisher, Wiley, from At Zero: The Final Secrets to “Zero Limits” The Quest for Miracles Through Ho’oponopono by Joe Vitale. Copyright (c) 2014 by Joe Vitale. All rights reserved. This book is available at all bookstores and online booksellers.

4. Let go until prompted to take inspired action. Dr. Hew Len once told me that he cleans on a decision three times. If the answer is the same after those cleanings, he takes action on it. This means that if I get an impulse to do something to resolve the perceived problem, I might clean on it three times before I actually take any action. This is a way to ensure the action is coming from inspiration and not memory.

5. Repeat. Everyone wants a shortcut to cleaning and reaching Zero. I do, too. But that very impatience needs cleaning. Wanting something right now is memory playing out, urging us to get instant gratification. It’s data. The Divine has no time and no urgency. Wanting things to unfold faster than they unfold is a wonderful opportunity to clean. I keep cleaning because it makes me feel lighter, happier, and healthier. It’s a fast-track way for me to remove the data in my being so that I can get closer to the Divine. It’s also easy, effortless, and free.

Green Tips & Tricks

Intelligent Health:

Working Smarter, Not Harder By Karen Verna Carlson, N.D., Ph.D.(Hon.)

“The body is a community made up of its innumerable cells or inhabitants.” •Thomas Edison

“Every cell is a little sentient being.” •Deepak Chopra, MD

I call them my Citizen Cells. Thirty trillion is the ballpark average number in an adult. Every one of them makes adjustments when I step out of a 98-degree muggy day into air conditioning. A 20-degree drop in temperature and 50% less humidity affects each cell. They respond intelligently—individually and communally— as they do when I feast on watermelon and grilled veggies or when I dive into the ocean or when I swing a pickaxe to break into our clay earth. Trust and Allow I’m here to remind you just how smart your body is, so you can trust it and allow it do its healing job without unnecessary interference. I’ve packed lots of information into the following paragraphs, but I figure you’ll be able to enjoyably read and ponder a snippet here and there during your summer activities. Is Intervention Always Necessary? During more than 35 years’ facilitating health for clients and students, I’ve concluded that one of the biggest obstacles to building better health is unnecessary intervention, which disrupts the progression of the natural stages of thorough healing. A common example is applying or taking pain meds for the slightest discomfort, or antibiotics for a scratchy throat, or laxatives for sluggish bowels.

These natural strategies support your body’s healing skills. Citizen cells are team athletes learning and practicing ways to strengthen resistance to illness or injury and to recover quickly. The results manifest better constitutional health, but the greater benefit of this way of living holistically is the satisfying sense of connection with one’s whole Self. You: thirty trillion inhabitants functioning within a web of loving intelligence. Diversity Is Complicated The late Harvard biologist, acclaimed for his research on genetics and cancer, Dr. Clarence Cook Little conservatively stated, “ We are familiar with the great diversification of activity in a large city. It does not seem possible that our own bodies could quietly and steadily be carrying on a more complicated and extraordinary process of manufacturing, storage, repair, communication, transportation, police, waste disposal, administration, food production, temperature control.” With 30,000,000,000,000 “little sentient beings” working on all those tasks, it seems more like a planetary population than a city’s. Planet You. Commerce Is Intelligent

Sequential Mechanisms

Maybe each organ is like a different country importing, generating and exporting specialties that benefit all. Language certainly doesn’t seem to be a problem for moving just the right amount of air, water and fuel to even the remotest corners of Planet You, with cleaning crews functioning around the clock. Each cell is smart, all right.

This month, I’m asking you to reconsider unnecessary intervention in favor of allowing your body’s innate intelligence to direct healing mechanisms acting sequentially over time. Use palliative comfort strategies like applications of ice or heat for stressed or stiff muscles, baking soda for plant and insect stings. Summer colds can run their natural course with reasonable rest and copious cups of hot water with a fresh squeezed lemon wedge. Support better bowel function with a few consecutive breakfasts of prune juice and oatmeal.

Think about your smart heart. The work it does might be compared to lifting a 10-pound weight three feet off the ground twice a minute for a lifetime. How many people would it take as a coordinated work team to match that? Try clenching your fist (that’s about the size of your heart) then opening it more than once a second, repeatedly (that’s about the rate it pumps), without changing that pace for as long as you live. Bet you can’t keep that up for more than a few minutes. Your 100 billion smart heart cells do that job 24/7. — continued on next page

When they stop, so does your entire world. Planet You dies. Harmony Is Smart Hard work really doesn’t imply intelligence, you say? Scientists monitoring the rhythm of one heart cell’s beat, which is quite distinct from a different heart cell nearby, nudge the two cells closer and closer together. The instant those cells touch, they pulsate together in a new rhythm. No international arguments about whose rhythm should predominate. No committee meetings fraught with endless discussion. No bribes. They just synchronize peacefully. How smart is that? You’re the CEO If you were the CEO of Planet You, how would you commend such effectiveness? If your heart were a dog, you’d gladly take it for a romp. If it were a philodendron in your living room, you’d joyfully give it a spritz of spring water and sweet words of praise. With nary a “thanks” for your heart, you may even grumble about “having” to exercise and drink water. Almost as bad as an ungrateful attitude are the salty snacks you feed your ingenious, loyal, hardworking heart. Now, I ask you, is that the best way to treat this vital component of your private planet? Intelligent Calculation

there’s also a higher level of consciousness that provides leadership coordinating countless activities. Grasping that half-gallon carton of juice to lift it out of the refrigerator, my hand launches up like a rocket because the carton purchased yesterday is practically empty. Nerves, bones and muscles involved in the maneuver had geared up for the weight of a full carton. Yes, a miscalculation, but the prefix doesn’t negate the fact that some calculation did indeed take place. Who made that calculation? My intellect was occupied with the ominous dark cloud filling the sky above my laundry on the clothesline. This Web Is Wise “The intelligence that binds the body together and orchestrates healing is a delicate web,” says Deepak. That web or field of intelligence runs your body, Planet You, real well, coordinating food, sanitation, security, travel, construction, storage, climate, etc. Aren’t you glad you don’t have to do it? Whew! Who wants THAT responsibility? A simple paper cut automatically activates a progression of thousands of chemicals and tasks in just the right amounts and in just the right order with just the right timing. This is a construction job far more complex than building a skyscraper! It takes smart cells and smart leadership.

Smart citizen cells function so well on such a grand scale because www.livingwellmagazine.net

Every day, our immune system lymphocytes (manufactured in bone marrow with appropriate timing and in just the right amounts) travel in our bloodstream to identify billions of terrorist bacteria and viruses. Lymphocytes can “remember” each dangerous intruder by labeling it with antibodies, like sticking on post-its. (There are thousands and thousands of different kinds of antibodies.) Then our body formulates, produces and dispenses the best pharmaceuticals tailored to kill or disarm microbial invaders. It files each formula, and retrieves it when needed again. All this security is so smoothly administered, there’s rarely even any inconvenience! Such brilliance. Compensatory Reserves Rev. Russell L. Dicks and Richard C. foreign to the human mind. It is not made of extraneous material, like a house. Neither is it a cellular construction, a mere assemblage of cells. It is, of course, composed of cells, as a house is of bricks. But it is born from a cell, as if the house originated from one brick, a magic brick that would set about manufacturing other bricks. Metamorphosis Is Magical “Those bricks, without waiting for the architect’s drawings or the coming of the bricklayers, would assemble themselves and form the walls. They would also metamorphose into windowpanes, roofing slates, coal for heating and water for the kitchen and bathroom. An organ develops by means such as those attributed to fairies in the tales told to children. It is engendered by cells, which, to all appearances, have a knowledge of the future edifice, and synthesize from substances contained in blood plasma the building materials and even the workers.”

Now, a good king or queen is loving and gives the people freedom to move about the country. In this case, your own feelings and thoughts and desires are like the people in your kingdom. So you should treat your own feelings graciously, and you and your kingdom will flourish. Some monarchs are dictators, setting up all kinds of impossible laws and taboos, because they’re really afraid of the people who make up their kingdom. “If you’re a good king or queen, you’ll realize that your kingdom is a good one, and you won’t be afraid of your own people…your thoughts and feelings and desires…but will encourage them. And you and your body will have all the freedom necessary to grow.”

Eight satin dress forms stood at wobbly attention, crammed against the radiator and windows. Plastic bins were shoved under the table while see-through plastic clothing bags created slippery mountains in front of the china cabinet. A wall of flowery hat boxes on the sideboard played peek-a-boo with the art work and lamps. Extraneous, items deemed “keep worthy” landed on the dining room table, and were piled high to the tarnished chandelier. Boxes filled every seat and corner in the dining room leaving only a small aisle through which to walk from living room to kitchen. The kitchen fared no better. Chairs, picnic items, and the typical holiday-only entertaining dishes created a wall down the center leaving a narrow aisle to the sink on one side and a narrower aisle to the stove on the other. It had been like that for six months. The dining room and kitchen were mine. Before you form angry mobs brandishing torches and pitchforks to purge the hypocrite in your midst, let me assuage you with this word: asbestos. Every house in the city of Wilmington built around the turn of the century has pipes in the basement insulated with asbestos. I decided this was the year to take on the task and expense of having it removed… a two-day job at most. This meant that items from the basement had to be taken up and out of the way. I began this project on a warm day in late October. Hauling things upstairs, casually sorting and tossing as I went, I expected to be finished in plenty of time for my annual Thanksgiving fete. And suddenly in came a blustery winter usually reserved for western Canadians, Eskimos and Santa. Opening up basement windows to fan out carcinogenic air was not a good idea and passage to the basement from the outside became impossible. So I lived with the dress forms, the piles, the mountains, and the tiny aisles. I took people out to dinner on Thanksgiving. I didn’t have friends over for the holidays. I didn’t decorate for Christmas. I didn’t worry about cleaning or vacuuming and I ignored the dust bunnies and spiders that were settling in. Take out foods and paper plates were my new friends. But here’s an alarming truth: after a few months, I no longer saw

it. I had become so visually inured to the clutter and had learned the choreography around it all so well, that it seemed it no longer existed. Occasionally I had to disrupt the delicate arrangement, thus creating something more intrusive and blockading. The mountains shifted and the piles changed. And yet, I became remarkably adept at the side-stepping, toe-tussle huckabuck of a dance I had to do to maneuver around it all. I could still live a pretty accomplished life style in spite of a dining room and kitchen that resembled a cross between a warehouse and landfill. If you asked me how I could stand to live like that, my answer would have been simply, “Like what?” I was managing. But I wasn’t managing well. Truthfully, I did see it. I could dance and work around it all every day, but it was all there and it was affecting my ability to concentrate. The physical clutter was becoming an emotional issue. I found simple things harder to do, my focus wasn’t as keen, and my attention span…along with my temperament… was getting much shorter. Making simple decisions, dealing with mail and managing paperwork were taking more time and becoming laborious. It was getting harder to keep the living room from becoming just as clutter contagious. In a pseudo-warm day in February, four months after the original appointment, I called in the asbestos- removal crew and they went to work. The temperatures dropped again and the snow swirled about. Windows were wide open and the house cooled down. I didn’t care. This had to get done. — continued on next page

It took me almost two months to get everything back downstairs because I did for myself what I ask my clients to do: think. How do I entertain now? Should I keep all these fancy things or will my new-found love of paper plates do just as well? Will I ever do Thanksgiving here again? It was so much easier to go out. Why do I care about all of these fancy dishes, holiday decorations, flower pots, and tools that will never be used?

At the end of it all, the basement was better organized and the house no longer carried the stigma of asbestos. By late spring, the rugs had been vacuumed, everything had been cleaned and dusted, and a new chandelier had been installed. The dining room and kitchen were ready for their close ups in that glossy magazine.

Why do I need a pick ax? Shouldn’t it come with a man attached? There’s furniture down here from my girlfriend’s mother who passed away 5 years ago. Doesn’t she want these things? Just how many petticoats does any historical presenter need? Isn’t it time all these vintage clothes were taken off hangers and placed in boxes? Where would the boxes go? Do I need the clothes at all now?

By the way, we’re going out.

It’s all done and I’m ready to call some friends for a good time.

My work, writing and speaking schedules were demanding, and what I wanted more than anything else during this whole venture was exactly what my clients want: a magic wand, a jar of pixie dust, something to just “make this happen” so I wouldn’t have to make so many decisions and move so much stuff. I just wanted it “done.” And one day, I asked a friend to just grab those dress forms and those hat boxes and to help me get them downstairs. Every day after that, I seized something from a chair, from the middle of the kitchen or attacked a corner. I hauled away more things for others to love.
