words from the editors and publishers:

Finally, it stopped raining long enough to start getting our pool ready for its season debut. I can’t help but wonder when we will actually have an opportunity to take advantage of its cooling properties, day after day, I watched as the rain increases the depth, and reduces the temperature. The pool is usually open long before the end of May. This will be the first year in over fifteen years that we will be opening the pool just in time for the Memorial Day weekend. It is open, having almost reluctantly taken off the cover. The water is treated and waiting for the first brave soul to make their entrance. With few warm days leading up to removing the cover, the water is going to be cold, and I can assure you that I will not be the first one in. I am confident that it will be temperature friendly sooner than later, but in light of the remarkably rainy and cold month of May we had, I must admit I am not happy. The rain has also been impinging upon our enjoying our new car. We finally sent a very old Suburban to the dump and returned a lease. We purchased a beautiful brand new Audi Q5. On that note, I am compelled to give a shout out to Audi Wilmington. It was a pleasure dealing with them, which has not always been our experience throughout the years when purchasing a new vehicle. Honestly, the environment at Audi Wilmington is professional, warming and comfortable. Our sales person was very nice, knowledgeable, and extremely accommodating as was everyone else that we had dealings with at Audi Wilmington. The only problem I had was imagining how I would fit our two Great Danes into the very impressive, very expensive, and very impractical (for us) Audi R8 instead. Seriously, we are very happy with our Audi Q5 and if we have the need for speed, we’ll borrow our son’s Super Charged Range Rover. For now, we are looking forward to warm summer days with trips to the beach, hikes with the dogs and more trips to NYC to visit our son, Michael a first year associate with Reed Smith in NYC. Michael went from, performing in various commercials and live performances, dancing with Jay Z at the VMA Awards at age eleven, and along with our son Sean helped develop LWM in 2005. Now played a part in the Screen Actors Guild collective bargaining contracts and Sean Advertising Inquiries: Michael a student in the first graduating class from Zip Code Wilmington, currently employed at Capitol One as a Software Developer / Coder. All of this reminds me that life is a journey. Brian Strauss - Publisher You never know where it will take you or where you will take it. Beware the Leaves of

P

oison Ivy can grow on the ground, it climbs and sometimes as a shrub. This is the plant that causes most of the misery since it grows on nearly every roadside, path, pond, stream, and beach But if you know what to look you might be lucky enough to avoid it. Poison Ivy always grows left and then right. It never has thorns, the leaves are usally shiny and can can be toothed or smooth. When Poison ivy climbs, it uses little hairy roots to attach to surfaces. The leaves of the poison ivy plant are green in the summer, but can be red, orange, or yellow in the spring and fall. The plant may flower with greenish-yellow 6

blossoms and produce small, green berries that turn white in the fall. The sap of the poison ivy plant contains an oil called urushiol. This is the irritant that causes an allergic reaction. You don’t even have to come in direct contact with the plant to have a reaction. The oil can be lingering on your gardening equipment, golf clubs, or even your shoes. Brushing against the plant — or anything that has come in contact with it — can result in skin irritation. Generally Poison Ivy does not effect your pets unless they are hairless but they can give it you. It is recommended that if you know you were exposed to poison ivy to wash the skin as soon as www.livingwellmagazine.net

possible -- make sure you wash all of the clothes and anything else that may have contacted the poison ivy. All of us have laughed when you see someone covered in Pink calamine lotion, but don’t laugh to hard because according to the American Skin Association 85% of the population is allergic to Poison Ivy and about 10 to 15% are extremely allergic. There are some tried and true methods for relief you can take like over the counter antihistamines so you can sleep at night but there is no cure for Poison Ivy you just have to grin and try not to itch the rash. — continued on next page

— continued from previous page

Below are some Home Remedies that might work but our recomendation is to try them all. If you have ever had a bad case of poison ivy that you will know what we mean. Baking Soda Baths & Pastes: To help relieve itching, place a cup of baking soda in a bath tub filled with warm water. You can also mix 3 teaspoons of baking soda with one teaspoon of water and mix until it forms a paste. Apply this paste to the infected area. Oatmeal -make a paste or take a bath in it. Cook the oatmeal, if you are making a paste. Aloe Vera Gel: Can be used directly on the infected area. You can buy almost anywhere or buy the plant. Sea Salt Or Take A Dip In The Ocean: Salt is an excellent natural remedy, as it is drying for the skin, and will pull both the excess water and the poison from the body. Make a paste using water and Salt. or you can take a warm salt bath.. Witch Hazel and Rubbing Alcohol: Dabbing a small amount of witch hazel/rubbing alcohol on the infected area offers both cleansing and itch-relief. Banana Peel: Many old-wives tales swear by the power of a banana peal for poison ivy. Simply rub the inside of a banana peel onto the affected area. Cucumber: Making a cucumber paste and applying it to the skin helps bring soothing relief. you can also slice a piece of a cucumber off and let it dry on the affected area. Watermelon Rind: Similar to the cooling cucumber, watermelon is also cold on the skin and can help provide itch relief. Apple Cider Vinegar: Apply directly to the infected skin. Apple Cider Vinegar has a toxin-pulling action that helps suck the poison out of the pores. You can also create a warm vinegar compress using a thin cotton towel. Coffee: Pour cold coffee directly onto rash Coffee contains chlorogenic acid, which acts an anti-inflammatory Dawn liquid: Pour on- wash off. Do it for three days and according to some people it should be gone. Vodka or Tequila: Apply directly to rash and then drink a shot or two. Tumeric: Make a paste with lemon juice or rubbing alcohol Apply fifteen meets and wash off- your skin will be yellow afterwards If you have another remedy that works let us know at: info@livingwellmagazine.net (Re: poison ivy) www.livingwellmagazine.net

Tesla’s sporty new all-electric Model 3 can go 215 miles per charge and will cost consumers less than $30k after Federal Tax Rebates when it rolls off California production lines in 2017.

Electric Or Plug-In Hybrid Car—What are the best bang-for-my-buck deals on these vehicles? With each new model year, automakers continue to expand their offerings of affordable and fun plug-in hybrid and all-electric vehicles. While consumers obviously want these new cars, this year’s phase-in of President Obama’s higher automotive fuel efficiency standards have given automakers another reason to step up the manufacturing of less consumptive vehicles that compete in price with their gas and diesel counterparts. Also, new car buyers can cash in on up to $7,500 in federal tax incentives (and possibly more from their own state—check out the Database of State Incentives for Renewable Energy to find out) to help defray the costs of getting into an EV or plug-in hybrid. What this means is that giving up gas has never been so easy—or cheap. A case in point is Ford’s redesigned C-Max Energi, a plug-in hybrid that gives drivers a range of up to 500 miles as well as 19 miles of all-electric driving for under $28,000 factoring in the federal tax rebate. Not to be outdone, General Motors’ Chevrolet brand is coming on strong with several of its own affordable EVs and plug-in hybrids. The Spark Electric gets more than 80 miles per charge and can be had for less than $19,000. Chevy fans looking for a beefier engine and torquier ride can opt for the Volt plug-in hybrid, which runs for 380 miles using its gas engine as a generator or 38 miles on electric battery power alone—all for less than $27,000. Meanwhile, German automakers continue to innovate on the electric vehicle front. BMW’s all-electric I3 EV zooms from zero to 60 in seven quiet seconds and, despite its punky look, drives just like a...Beemer. The all-electric base version of the I3 can be 12

had for around $35,000 and gets drivers 81 miles per charge, but owners can opt to add a small back-up gas engine (for another $4,000) turning the car into a plug-in hybrid with a 150-mile range. While Volkswagen may be in the dog house with environmentalists given its diesel emissions cheating scandal, the company is making some amends with the new all-electric version of its zippy sport-tuned hatchback, the e-Golf. Factoring in the federal EV tax credit, customers can drive off in a new e-Golf for less than $23,000—a great deal on a cutting edge fuel efficient vehicle if there ever was one. If even that seems like too much money, consider an even smaller electric car. Smart’s FourTwo Coupe is a two-seater, around-town EV that will set you back just $13,000 following the federal tax rebate. Another logical choice is Mitsubishi’s similarly compact I-MiEV for under $16,000. While all these choices are well and good if you need a car ASAP, those willing to wait until next year might want to hold out for Tesla’s forthcoming Model 3, a sporty all-electric sedan with a 215 mile range. The car will retail for $35,000, meaning that consumers should be able to get it for $27,500 after the federal tax rebate). Tesla is hoping that the solid range, sporty drive train and stylish look might just make the Model 3 the “it” EV on the market when it hits showroom floors in 2017. Can we ward off the spread of the Zika virus with better environmental management?

containing containers around, and the mosquito has adapted so well…it’s really kind of a human parasite. It’s like the cockroach of the mosquito world.”

Zika virus, first discovered in Uganda’s Zika Forest in 1947, is transmitted to humans and other mammals through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito, and typically causes only a mild and short-term illness (fever, rash, joint pain, conjunctivitis) that likely immunizes the victim from future infections. But a Zika virus infection during pregnancy can cause a serious birth defect called microcephaly—where the fetal head doesn’t develop to the proper size, leading to other severe fetal brain defects.

And the mismanagement of urban waste is far from the only environmental factor in the spread of Zika. Environmentalists point out that dam-building and deforestation are also significant contributors to increased amounts of standing water where Aedes mosquitos can breed and come into contact with growing human populations. Restoring natural hydrological flows and leaving forests intact would be good defense mechanisms against the spread of mosquito-borne disease of all kinds.

Over the last half century, occasional Zika outbreaks have been reported in tropical Africa, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. But the first confirmed case in the western hemisphere last year in Brazil now has public health experts concerned about its potential to develop into a global pandemic. “Because the Aedes species mosquitoes that spread Zika virus are found throughout the world,” reports the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), “it is likely that outbreaks will spread to new countries.”

But whether we can contain the warming of the planet as a result of human greenhouse gas emissions might be the single biggest factor in whether we can prevent Zika from morphing into a global public health menace. The World Health Organization (WHO) recently reported that predicted global average temperature increases of two to three degrees Centigrade would make temperate latitudes hotter, in turn exposing several hundred million more people to Aedes species mosquitoes. Malaria, dengue fever and other mosquito-borne diseases would also surge along with Zika.

Indeed Zika’s recent “success” in spreading far beyond a few isolated pockets of the tropics may be partly attributable to how we have taken care of the environment in the modern industrial era post-World War II. Durland Fish, a professor of microbial diseases, forestry and environmental studies at Yale University, isn’t surprised Zika has spread widely, given the proclivity of the Aedes mosquito (which is also responsible for spreading dengue fever and chikungunya virus) for inhabiting artificially humanmade habitats like tires, cans, plastic containers and rain barrels. “It doesn’t live in the ground, or in swamps, or any other kinds of places where you would normally find mosquitoes,” reports Fish in a recent Washington Post article. “So humans have created an environment for it to proliferate, by having all of these water

“You have to do something about the mosquitoes, and that’s strictly an environmental problem, there’s no medical applications to that,” concludes Fish. “And focusing on that as an environmental issue is going to have the greatest impact on protecting people.” Contact: CDC Zika Virus, www.cdc.gov/zika/; Washington Post, www.goo. gl/5wnxiS; WHO Zika Facts, www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/zika/.

comes to how they metabolize drugs and other medications. It is imperative to NEVER GIVE YOUR CAT A HUMAN PAIN MEDICATION! Many a cat has died as a result of their human giving them their own medication. Call your veterinarian before ever considering doing such a thing. It is well worth the cost of a veterinary visit to assess their pain level and get the proper medication to relieve it.

The following is a list of signs in cats that are painful:

Q:

I have an elderly cat, Precious. She has been slowing down the past few years. She is not as interested in coming upstairs to bed any longer. I am wondering if she is hurting or uncomfortable. Could you explain how I can tell if my furry friend is having pain?

A:

Well, the first thing to let you know is that cats, in particular, are very, very good at hiding their discomfort. It is the rare cat that will actually vocalize or cry when they are in discomfort. As a veterinarian, it is our responsibility to try to dissipate that pain. Before going into the specific signs of pain, we must first define the concept. A definition commonly utilized, which is according to the International Association for the Study of Pain, states that “pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience”. Pain is a very complicated concept. Pain physiology occurs in the body, which results in chemical changes and responses. The perception of pain, however, has to do with the brain. Consequently, the perception of pain occurs in the brain. Humans and animals do not experience pain unless the higher centers, i.e. the brain, register the incidents. Cats, unlike dogs, have signs of pain that can be different from other companion animals. Cats are notorious at hiding their pain, consequently, it can be difficult to assess and often times, the signs can be easy to miss. Many cats act perfectly normal when they are ill. I have seen cats in kidney failure appear perfectly normal until blood work is done showing the severity of the disease. The reason that cats act this way goes back to survival instincts in the wild. A sick or injured animal in the wild becomes a target if it makes sounds like crying. Weak, sick animals in the wild become prey. Because of this a lot of people think that cats don’t experience pain in the same way a human does. Well, they do.

I can tell you for sure that any cat who actually cries in pain is in severe severe pain. Get them to the veterinarian to be assessed. Your cat deserves it.

Cats in pain need to be treated for it. If not, this biologic stressor will hinder the healing process both physically and emotionally. Treating pain will make a significant positive impact on the speed of their recovery. As ethical veterinarians, it is our duty to control and treat pain. Cats are different than humans when it 14

How to Avoid a Crisis of Illness PART II: ACTION STEPS! Dr. Scott E. Rosenthal

Last month’s article discussed how sickness can seemingly spring out of the blue. This happens when too many burdens are exerted upon you and your ability to adapt is overwhelmed. Remember to think of your body’s resources like a checking account with a set amount of money to spend each month. You need to write checks for bills, food, clothing, your house, etc. If you spend too much in one area, not enough money will remain for other needs. Many unwanted consequences will result. Similarly, if the demands on your body exceed its capacities, symptoms of poor health will manifest as fast as a collection notice from one of your utility companies. This article will focus on easy to implement strategies that will reduce the overall load placed on your system each day. This will not only help you prevent a crisis of illness, but also allow you to live the most vibrant and satisfying life possible. Please refer to the previous article on the topic, “How to Avoid a Crisis of Illness,” by visiting www.livingwellmagazine.net 16

Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR) Only carry your cell phone on your body when necessary. Slip the phone into your purse, backpack, or bag when not in use. When in a restaurant, car or at work/school, put it on the table, seat, or desk. (Hint: when out and about, place your car keys on the phone in order to insure that you don’t leave it behind.) Text or use the speaker phone feature instead of phone-to-ear conversations. If your cell phone or tablet is kept on your nightstand when you sleep, turn it off or put it on airplane mode. This will eliminate your close proximity exposure to the EMR from the device’s regular signaling that it uses to speak to the mother ship. Stress Meditate, sit in quiet contemplation, and/or pray for at least 12 minutes per day. This not only helps mitigate the effects of stress on your system, but has anti-aging benefits as well.

When experiencing a stressful situation, or shortly after (if more appropriate), focus on your breathing and intentionally slow your exhalation to twice as long as your inhalation. If needed, count. Breathe in to a count of two and out to a count of four. Repeat a few times until you feel more calm and relaxed. When stress is extreme, try making faces at yourself in a bathroom mirror. It sounds ridiculous, but it works! I discovered this trick during college and find that it helps break the trance of despair felt during the most trying of times. (Hint: refrain from performing this technique in the presence of bystanders in public bathrooms, as that may lead to other stressful situations.)

Sleep It has been brought to my attention by my office staff that I missed this one in last month’s article. (I must have been overly tired!) Sleep deprivation or over-consumption places much stress on your system. The perfect amount of sleep for you likely falls somewhere in the range of 7-8 hours each night (more if you are a teenager). Quality is important as well (sorry new moms and dads or puppy/kitten owners). Here are a few tips to get better ZZZs: Avoid caffeine past the mid-afternoon

Structural Commit to gifting yourself regular work-outs two to three times each week. Again, please see my website for articles outlining some of the best ways to stay in shape. Importantly, find what you like to do and do it — yoga, Pilates, the gym, walk in the park, etc. See a doctor of chiropractic on a periodic basis for structural check-ups! If you have not tried chiropractic before, you will be amazed how this strategy helps you be at your best. Most people not only feel better, but feel younger, experience enhanced performance and greater levels of energy! Harmful Microbes

Eat lighter in the evening and refrain from late night snacking. If deprived, consider going to sleep earlier rather than sleeping in longer. The suggestions in this article are an important starting point. The best approach, after implementing the above, would be to pursue learning as much as you can on each topic. Become a total-burdenlowering geek! At times, you will need help from a professional to reduce the burdens that challenge your health and wellbeing. If you can balance the forces that are placed on your system each day like you would balance a check book, the surprise of illness can be avoided and you will live a fuller and healthier life!

This category mainly requires professional help to address. There are preventative measures you can take on your own. Below are a few examples: Save doggie kisses for places other than your face. Next time you need to scratch your eye, nose or mouth, try using your forearm or putting a finger up your shirt sleeve in order to prevent its surface from touching your face. Imagine what may be living on a dollar bill, door knob, or any surface frequently touched by other humans. Allergens Use air purification at home and at work (if possible). I personally use two devices. One is a UV light system that was installed in my duct work that treats the entire house. The other is a plug-in unit that I keep in the bedroom. Use nasal irrigation with a neti pot or squeeze bottle device in order to flush away allergens and other impurities from your nasal cavity.

“Here and now we are surrounded by,

Find Proof

and immersed in, an Infinite Good.

But first, it helps to more strongly validate that I am indeed surrounded by literally infinite supplies of good. I am looking out the window at rhododendron blossom clusters bigger than cantaloupes. Their magenta magnificence explodes every spring with no help from me. Cut one, float it in a bowl of water— instant showpiece. There are hundreds on my eight 30-foot bushes. An hour ago, I sat on the ground with 15 two-week old chicks jumping on and off my outstretched legs, scooting from water to grain then melting into fluffy puddles of deep sleep for five minutes or until other peeps clamber over them. And then I made an omelet out of surplus eggs and fresh picked asparagus. Infinite Intelligent Good extends up into higher forms of human expression and down into microbial armies enriching the soil. Good is real. Good is unlimited. Find proof right now right where you are.

How much of this Infinite Good is ours? ALL OF IT. How much of It may we have to use? AS MUCH OF IT AS WE CAN EMBODY.” —Ernest Holmes, The Science of Mind (Dodd, Mead & Co., NY, 1926)

You have had direct experience of Infinite Intelligent Good because that is what functioned when two parent cells connected in your mother’s womb to produce the you that came into the world nine months later. (That was the subject of my April column two months ago.) Also, every success you’ve ever experienced is because you allowed that Infinite Intelligent Good to express Itself in your life despite myriad fears, contradictions and doubts. (Training your mind to think more constructively was last month’s topic.) Clear the Path Combining these two facts—(1) reality is preponderantly good, and (2) trained thinking is more intelligent than untrained thinking—offers the opportunity to generate even more good in your life. A lot more good. The problem is I have so many mixed messages swirling around in my mind at speeds so fast and depths so deep I’m not aware of 99% of them. These conflicting thoughts about available resources, timing, projected hazards, legalities, ethics, environmental limits, self esteem, etc., etc. obstruct the manifestation of all that good. The solution to getting more good is to use my conscious mind more intelligently to create a clear path to attract that good to myself. 18

Get More Good Easier I continually gather fresh evidence of good and invest the process with delighted appreciation because the way my mind was trained was to discredit, demean, distrust or diminish these blessings. And I was a very good student. I learned to doubt the existence of good or at least to doubt the likelihood of attracting enough of it to survive. So I worked hard, very hard to make good happen. And good did visit me, while I continued to work harder to keep renewing it. I estimate that all the good I garnered probably came from 15% of the effort I put in. The other 85% actually obstructed benefits because my thinking was so conflicted and unclear. Now I know better and get a lot more good with a lot more ease. Singleness of Purpose Here’s what I’ve learned. I keep my mind on what I want to gain. I keep feeding my mind uplifting thoughts about the good I want. I watch the results of my thoughts translate into actions. I tweak the thoughts and actions to improve results, always concentrating

It so happens I have a lot of baggage—wounds from childhood and adult trauma that used to be very distracting because I thought by working through those issues I’d have an easier journey to my good. While I still aspire to heal those wounds, I now find myself putting more energy into focusing on the good I’m experiencing on this path towards more good. Turns out this continual in-pouring of new good flushes out the poisons from old wounds. Dissolve Conundrums This is not as much fun as it could be. You see, I’m much more comfortable with the familiar underdog struggle I’m used to believing as my lot in life. So my next good is to feel the happiness I’m manifesting and find ways to make that my familiar state. How odd that feeling happy is trumped by the fact that it is unfamiliar. But I don’t need to enmesh with that conundrum. It will dissolve as I train my thoughts and actions to get more good.

The philosopher calls it Reality. Life is infinite energy coupled with limitless creative imagination. It is the invisible essence and substance of every visible form. Its nature is goodness, truth, wisdom and beauty, as well as energy and imagination. Our highest satisfaction comes from a sense of conscious union with this invisible Life. All human endeavor is an attempt to get back to first principles, to find such an inward wholeness that all sense of fear, doubt and uncertainty vanishes.”

How Do Nutrition And Chiropractic Work Together?

Co-Authors: Melissa Crispell, CNS, CNHP Dr. Lisette Miller, DC

Although, functional nutrition seems to be more accurate as everything is food. Our primary foods are what we put in our mouths and our secondary foods are how we nourish our bodies. A balance of primary and secondary foods is imperative for optimal whole-body function.

Your white blood cells can paint a picture that will help your practitioner to make recommendations for your specific health needs and concerns.

Nutrition is a Pillar of Functional Medicine

But, what if we’re eating the right foods and exercising but still not absorbing the nutrients in our food or supplements? This is where chiropractic would come into play. Most people seek chiropractic or think of chiropractic care as a relief of back pain. While chiropractic can be helpful for back pain, it is actually so much more than that. Our nervous system dictates every move we make: everything from our heart beating to eyes blinking to breathing. Our nerves that send these messages are housed in our spinal column. If your messaging system is impaired all the nutrition in the world won’t make you feel better. When the communication system isn’t working properly neither is your digestive system. Your ability to digest and assimilate can be compromised. Your lower back is the home of spinal nerves that communicate to your pancreas, digestive tract, stomach, and colon.

Knowing your food/chemical sensitivities is paramount to an effective eating plan. Knowing which test to run is equally as important. The lymphocyte response assay is the gold standard in delayed sensitivity testing. Simply put, the blood cannot lie.

There are many reasons for “congestion” of the nerves in your back. Anything from car accidents, trauma, and structural abnormalities to negative thoughts, depression, and anxiety can result in less than stellar function. When you have this

Most likely functional practitioners will use lab testing such as blood, stool, saliva, and/or hair to help determine what is causing a particular health concern. One of the most common approaches is to bring lab values into a “functional” range vs. what is typically considered a “normal” range. These values tend to be narrower than the widely accepted ranges to promote and support the innate body functions and also as a preventative factor. A functional practitioner can crack a case that no other practitioner has been able to handle because of this method. While labs are very important for understanding what’s happening in the blood there are a few other ways to address your health concerns.

type of congestion your nervous system is not sending the appropriate signals to the rest of your body systems, including your digestive system. A weakened digestive system means a weakened immune system. A weakened immune system can result in many health issues: thyroid issues, glucose regulation is impaired, reduced weight loss ability, bowel problems, hormone imbalance, chronic fatigue, just to name a few. In short the status of your spine dictates how your nervous system is functioning. When your spine is out of alignment your messaging system is not effective.

Free vein Screening Thursday, June 9th 4:00-6:00 PM

“It is important to note that only 10% of your nervous system is dedicated to signaling pain. The other 90% is strictly for function.”

The converse is also true. When looking at chiropractic care and the same thing is being done over and over and the treatment is not effective, then it’s time to look at the body more systematically. Magnesium along with vitamins C and D are important for maintaining a chiropractic adjustment by reducing inflammation and nourishing cartilage. The adjustment is a tool in all of this. Assessing your adrenal status is also important to consider. Focus on eating enzyme rich, nutrient dense, nonGMO, and organic foods as well to insure that your nervous system is sending and receiving the appropriate messages. Chiropractic helps your body to be able to breakdown food, absorb nutrients, use our innate detox ability, and effectively heal. A strong nutrition plan will support your chiropractic care. A truly integrative practice cannot separate nutrition and chiropractic – they go hand in hand as part of the whole plan. True health is how your body functions!

EDIBLE WILDFLOWERS Chef John Ash and James O. Fraioli

I look forward to spring when apple blossoms bloom, dandelions sprout, and violets peek out along the edges of the forest. Many spring wildflowers are not only beautiful as garnishes, but they taste good and pack lots of nutrition. Remember that not all wildflowers are safe to eat. In her book Edible Flowers (which I contributed to), Cathy Wilkinson Barash offers some important tips about edible flowers. She cautions: “Eat flowers only when you are positive they are edible. Not all flowers are edible, some are poisonous. Do not eat flowers from florists, nurseries or garden centers as they may have been sprayed or otherwise adulterated. If you have hay fever, asthma or allergies, do not eat flowers.”

JESSIE’SKaren BAGS Jessee

If you’re sporting a colorful and reversible tote of various textures and patterns with a snazzy little tag on the side, chances are you have one of Jessie’s Bags. And chances are you are no stranger to cancer. Meet Jessie Moore, a breast cancer survivor who has been making totes since her diagnoses and surgery in 2006. Now 87 years old, she and her daughter, Joanne, have a two-woman philanthropic home-grown industry. For ten years, this mother / daughter team has been giving away tote bags to hospitals and treatment centers for those who have been diagnosed with cancer.

Like most great ideas, Jessie’s Bags started with serendipity. “A neighbor had a garage sale of fabric books from her interior design business,” says Jessie. “The idea was for me to keep busy while recovering from surgery, and so I began making pillows. A month later, a neighbor came by with a grocery tote, and I covered it with pieces of fabric to make it prettier. This eventually led to making totes for others who have been touched by cancer.” Besides being unique in design, each bag contains a handwritten message of hope and encouragement.

J

essie is hardly new to the art of sewing. She sewed ladies’ lingerie, children clothing and men’s tuxedo shirts at several different job locations in Philadelphia. “I came from a family of share croppers in Arkansas, but in 1946, my brother, who was in the navy, was stationed in Philadelphia. He encouraged me to move there, saying there were more factories and job opportunities in the city. I moved in with my daughter just 10 years ago when my breast cancer was first diagnosed. Joanne Downer, her daughter, remembers as a child visiting the Little Bitty factory where her mother sewed little girls’ dresses. “I just loved the fabric room in the back,” she says. “All those prints, colors and textures were fascinating to me. I’m still all about the fabrics.” Years later, Joanne is living with bins and piles of fabrics throughout her studio space in her home. Joanne, who has a degree in commercial art, does the designing and layout while her mother does the sewing. This green business, which reuses donated fabrics, along with bits and pieces of other sample materials has long been involved with the community. Their bags have been donated to Papastavros Imaging, The Christiana Hospital, Simply You, BFRIN, The Ronald McDonald House, The American Cancer Society, and nursing homes. To help with purchasing materials that aren’t donated, Jessie’s Bags has set up marketplaces in Farmers markets in West Chester PA, Booths Corner PA, & R13 Farmers market. Recently, Joanne and Jessie have thought outside the box…or tote…and have become a mobile community service project. “We bring the Design- a -Bag Party to you and your group,” says Joanne. This mobile program now gets help from volunteers in senior centers, various organizations, 55 + communities, assisted living facilities and schools. “We teach others how to sew together our pre-assembled bags, how to make tags, work with ribbons and how to gift wrap bags for delivery to breast cancer survivors.” — continued on next page

She adds, “We need more people willing to sew, and we’re always looking for donations to help fund our programs, everything from portable sewing machines, threads, needles, and ribbons to help defray the cost of making the bags. A spool of thread costs $6.00 or more these days, and Jessie alone sews at least 25 bags a week. Even a donation of stationery is helpful. Learning How To Blame Effectively

Joe White

Recently at one of my Breakthrough seminars a woman stood up and shared how she has been depressed her whole life. She continued “ever since she was 8, when her parents divorced, my mother became emotionally unavailable and my father threw himself into work and eventually another relationship”. I asked her how did that make you feel as a child? She said she felt unloved and unwanted and that was why she was depressed her whole life that ruined her life. I was curious about how an event occurring over 40 years ago still impacted her today. She went on and said it was because of her parents and the divorce. She was blaming them for her pain today. Therein lies, why she was stuck; she is blaming

ineffectively. It was time to teach her how to blame much more effectively.

Blame is a mechanism that identifies the source of the pain; but not the reason why you continue to hold on to the pain. We are really good at blaming the past, a person or an event for what we don’t have. We say, “it’s because of you...” Because this event in my life wasn’t fair and I have missed opportunities to be successful. By continuing to tell ourselves and others that everything that has happened or did not happen is a result of that event. Continually saying this and thinking this, we begin to truly believe it; rather than recover from it.

her this, she looked a bit puzzled and said, “No, they are the good things in my life. I blame them for all the negative stuff and things that are wrong in my life.” Sir Isaac Newton’s third law of motion states for every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction. What does that mean? How does it apply? I shared with her Newton’s law and that if you were going to blame them for all the crappy stuff then you need to blame them for the positive as well. All the strengths she mentioned were created from those same experiences. We can’t say we wish the the negative events never happened. Yes, there may be wounds to heal, but some of those wounds did heal and made us stronger. If you take away the bad, you must also take away the good. This is the same lesson George Bailey learned in “It’s a Wonderful Life.” I ask the women to give herself a gift. I asked her to call her parents and tell them: “Mom/Dad, I blame you for making me a great mom, finding an amazing husband, and being so connected to my children. I asked her, “Can you do that for yourself?” She paused briefly and then said ‘yes’ as she finally realized her breakthrough. My homework for you is to go out and blame effectively!! Until next month, Live Free!!

I asked the lady at the event, if she has ever told her parents what she blames them for and she said no. I suggested that she should finally tell them, she smiled and said that perhaps she should. I said “tell your parents all of the things you blame them for. But also make sure you blame them for making you a stronger mother whose children feel very connected to her, also blame them for marrying a great man who balances family and work.” When I told 28

DIAGNOSIS: IN CHINESE MEDICINE

When you see your doctor, he or she needs to find the reason for your visit. The act of listening about your trouble is important, but then determining the reason for your complaint is necessary. There are many different ways to diagnose a patient in the United States. For instance, blood tests, urinalysis, and biopsies can all be used to find why symptoms are occurring. When you visit an acupuncturist, the techniques and processes are somewhat similar to what you may experience in a physician’s office. The parts of examination in Chinese medicine are inquiry, palpation, listening and smelling, and inspection. All of these together help the acupuncturist to determine the best way to treat a patient.

Inquiry Inquiry helps direct the clinician toward a course of treatment. The main reason a person is seeking Chinese medical treatment is generally the first question asked. Then, there are 10 other topics asked to decide the cause of the problem. These include temperature, sweat, appetite, digestion, thirst, and sleep for example. There are also questions of past illnesses and specific questions based on your gender. All of these questions connect to form an idea of the source of the problem that the other tools, described below, help to confirm.

Palpation Another aspect of diagnosis in Chinese medicine is palpation. Palpation can include feeling channels, areas of pain, or a specific area, like the abdomen. The best known form of palpation in Chinese medicine is feeling the pulse. A lot goes into the practice of pulse taking. The main parts being felt are depth, form, rate, and force. Depth and rate are easy to understand, what level the pulse is felt and how fast or slow it goes. Feeling the strength of the pulse is noted in force. The form of the pulse is how the pulse feels under the fingers. There are many different forms, and each one usually has some correlation to a complaint. For example, a wiry pulse feels tense like a guitar string, and can usually correspond to high stress.

There are many times in life when one wishes to be listened to more. Acupuncturists listen to everything! The tone and volume of the voice and the sound of a cough, to name a couple. This can call attention to something that may not have been acknowledged during inquiry or palpation. Smelling can be noted in breath or body scent. It is less used because we bathe more frequently than when Chinese medicine began. Smelling can also be part of inspection, or assessing a person by looking at them.

Inspection Inspection can include body type, gait, and eye clarity, for instance. These all help with diagnosing in acupuncture practice but looking at the tongue gives a thorough picture of how the body is working. Probably the most common question I get in acupuncture practice is, “What did you see on my tongue?” The art of inspecting the tongue has gone on for centuries. Acupuncturists look at the body of the tongue, shape, and color. Everyone has a tongue coating as well. It can be thick or thin, yellow or white. The tongue is divided into body areas and color changes in each area can reflect what is happening internally. For example, if the body of the tongue is swollen and there is a thick coat, there is most likely some water retention and phlegm. This person may be suffering from allergies or a cold. If the body of the tongue is pale but the tip is red, a possibility could be fatigue and high stress. There are many aspects of tongue inspection, even a tremor can be seen in someone who has restless legs! The combination of all of these techniques guides a Chinese medicine practitioner in treatment. Gradually, the pulse and tongue picture can improve and, as the patient gets better, these change as well. Acupuncture is effective at treating many complaints in the human body, especially since it was the only form of medicine in China for centuries. Dr. Kelly Brown is a chiropractor and acupuncturist with Pure Wellness. She received both a Doctorate in Chiropractic and a Masters in Acupuncture from New York Chiropractic College in Seneca Falls, NY. Listening and Smelling Someone with high stress may sigh frequently or have a loud voice, leading to the next type of examination, listening and smelling. www.livingwellmagazine.net

The treatment for this should be pain free and the therapist must make sure that the Several years ago, a MRI showed that I had torn my meniscus is “reduced” (in the proper position), each treatment and meniscus in three places. For quite some time I have been throughout your entire course of treatment. As the knee is given getting along fairly well opting out of surgery because I have the space and strength to move properly through mobilization had minimal symptoms. The knee is bigger than the other and PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation; a hands on knee due to mild swelling and does not straighten all the strengthening using patterns familiar to and utilizing the brain), way. At first, it required me to modify my Yoga postures, the swelling will go down. Friction has been removed because however over time it seems to affect my hip on the same side of the space created. Osteopathic technique guides the spine and possibly my neck on that side as well. Is it too late to do to cooperate with the new alignment and support of the knee something about this? and always looks at the whole body as it is affected by the new alignment. As long as the patient avoids a full squat, the meniscus itself can heal. Eventually over time, even squatting can be revisited although loaded with heavy weight might always be a position to avoid so as not to re-injure. A Joint mobilization technique created and taught by a Norwegian therapist named Freddie Kaltenborn now 92 and still teaching, is most effective at creating space in the joint. This technique is painless and very effective to reduce swelling and to gain ROM that cannot be gained by force. Forcing straightening or bending in the knee without using mobilization techniques always creates more swelling and pain quite unnecessarily. European style of gaining ROM is based on techniques thousands of years old. Being a new culture American style is more of the “No pain, No gain.” The European style requires a hands on approach and the one on one treatment time necessary is counterproductive when our insurance system is based on function units. In the American style of treating payment is made based on time increments per modality used. The European style of treatment, payment is based on outcome. You are paid for results. The functional units allows for higher income with less work and more patients being seen at one time. Manual therapy emphasis requires more time from the therapist making it difficult to see many patients at once however results are more positive. affect and interfere with the nerves and blood vessels in this area. There are very important vessels and nerves, ganglion and lymph structures associated that are imposed upon. As you can surmise symptoms are far reaching as these vessels extend and travel far away from the area of origin. This can be very confusing for a specialist that focuses on one area or one system. The overlay is a gray area sometimes between the two specialties. One benefit of using osteopathic technique is that it addresses the entire

I have horrible gut problems and severve pain in my hands, back and feet. Could these be related to each other? Does osteopathy address the gut?

There are several ways osteopathy sees the relationship of gut symptoms and neuromuscular issues. First, whatever you put into your stomach is dispersed throughout all of your tissues through the bloodstream. If you are eating foods that you are allergic to (and we actually are likely to crave the foods we are allergic to) there will be a systemic inflammation as a result. Whenever you have systemic inflammation, whether it is from Lyme disease, meningitis or food allergies, there is something called fascial binding that will occur. The fascia which is designed as a glisteny, slippery, pliable, mobile tissue that conducts electricity (electrical impulse operates most bodily systems). When it is affected by infection or inflammation it loses those properties. So gut problems directly affect the fascia and can create areas of binding or resistance to movement forcing the body to compensate and rebel with pain. The binding directly affects muscle and nerve by putting undue force or strain directly on them. The other way the gut can be related to muscle and nerve function is that inflammation in the tissue of the stomach or

body. Training in osteopathy allows the therapist to see the trail, the intertwined symptoms. The focus of osteopathy is to identify the key lesion. The first in the trail. The insult that is causing this domino affect. Yes there is truly and interplay of the gut and pain in the musculoskeletal system and osteopathy does quite well at addressing them together. Most patients are quite perceptive and it pays off to listen to them and translate their way of describing their complaints into that of medical language. The patient holds the key for you to unlock the puzzle of symptoms.

Natural Remedies for Women Part 2: Treatment

Dianna Palimere

In part 1 of this article (See LWM’s April Issue), I discussed the differences between bacterial infections (BV), yeast infections, and viral infections. As previously stated, it is always best to make an appointment with a Gynecologist whenever you are experiencing symptoms which seem out of the norm for you and your body. In this month’s article, I will assume you have either seen your Gynecologist or you have used an at-home test kit to determine the diagnosis, and now you’re looking for a natural remedy.* A few months ago, one of my clients had been struggling with a vaginal infection. Being someone who had studied herbs for years, she makes all of her own soaps, lotions, body balms, tinctures, etc. In the past, she was easily able to identify and self-treat such vaginal infections with herbal remedies that she’d used and perfected over the years. This time; however, it had been almost two weeks, and she was still suffering with itching and discomfort. It took a bit of persuading, as she didn’t have health insurance, but eventually she took my advice to go see a Gynecologist and have some tests done. She returned a week later and told me that the visit cost her $50 and the doctor had taken a swab sample of the vaginal fluid and it was sent off to be tested at an outside lab. It would be several days before the test results would come back, but the doctor suspected it may be a yeast infection, and gave my client Diflucan (Fluconazole), an anti-fungal oral tablet to treat it. Even after taking the Diflucan, she still felt extreme discomfort, so she went to a walk-in clinic, hoping they would have on-site testing, so she could get treated immediately. The clinic gave her a prescription for anti-biotics for an “unknown infection” and confirmed that she also had a yeast infection; which they assumed the Diflucan she’d taken would treat. 36

After several days on the anti-biotics and having taken the Diflucan, she began to feel better. However, about a week later, she began to feel discomfort again. I had suggested that she return to her doctor; however, since the two weeks since she’d seen her doctor, she got a bill from the outside Lab for $850 (the lab tests included the vaginal swab for $663, Routine Urinalysis for $31, a Urine culture for $72, and a Sensitivity Organism #1 test for $84). Due to her lack of health insurance, and close to a thousand dollars in debt, I understood when she stated that she was financially unable to return to her doctor’s office. Instead, she talked with friends who were herbalists, and consulted the herbology texts she already owned to try to find a natural remedy she hadn’t already tried. The following week she presented for her session with me stating that she was “feeling great.” I asked what she’d done to resolve her symptoms, and she explained that she took a clove of raw garlic, peeled away all of the outside skin, and used a sterile needle to thread non-waxed dental floss through it. She then inserted the clove vaginally, leaving a length of the dental floss available to easily remove it. She did this before bed and removed it upon waking in the morning…and voila! No more symptoms.

Garlic Garlic has been used as a vaginal suppository to treat yeast infections due to an active compound it contains called Allicin. Allicin (allyl-allylthiosulfinate) is both an antifungal and antibacterial agent, so there are many women who have chosen to use this natural remedy when they are uncertain if their infection is BV or a yeast infection (since allicin will treat both). Despite

— continued from previous page

these known properties, and all of the natural remedies books and websites which support the use of a garlic suppository to treat BV and yeast infections, there are still many in the medical community who dispute it as a cure. That being said, after two doctors visits, oral anti-fungal medication, anti-biotics, and a serious amount of financial debt; the only thing that worked for my client was this home remedy. It certainly made me a believer! The only complaint? There may be a strong odor of garlic from your body or breath while using this remedy.

Tea Tree Oil Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) oil is another natural remedy that has been used to treat both BV and yeast infections. Tea tree oil contains natural antibacterial as well as natural antifungal compounds. However, one must be very careful in using the correct amount of tea tree oil, or it could cause further irritation. For this reason, I highly suggest that if one is going to use this remedy that they purchase Tea Tree Suppositories; which can be found in natural food stores and online. Usage directions indicate using one suppository daily for six days. A very popular choice for a Tea Tree Suppository is Sea Naturals Vaginal Hygiene Suppositories with 100% Pure Tea Tree and Neem Essential Oils. As per their product description: “Our natural and effective vaginal hygiene suppositories contain pure tea tree and neem essential oils, which have been used historically

as powerful antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal healing agents, while the illipe butter with meadowfoam wax serves as a premium moisturizing and soothing base.” It includes 10 Suppositories and one applicator ( $15.99 plus $4.09 S&H on Amazon.com). It is also highly suggested that in combination with a Tea Tree Oil suppository, that you also take probiotics, since the oil kills both the good and the bad bacteria. There are plenty of probiotics out there; however, I recommend taking Garden of Life Raw Probiotics, Vaginal Care, due to it having the proper amount of the specific types of probiotics; which are necessary for a healthy vaginal pH balance ($29 on Amazon.com).

Tips for using tea tree oil suppositories: Try freezing the oil suppository if it doesn’t come with an applicator. This can reduce the messiness with insertion. If it doesn’t come with an applicator, try using a tampon or tampon applicator to get the suppository inserted deeply into the vaginal canal. It will “melt” and leak out with time, so I also suggest wearing a pad in your underwear and inserting it before bed, so you’re lying down. This will help to reduce leakage and keep more of it in place to do its work while you sleep. Some women report a “cool” or “tingly” sensation; however most report that this goes away within 30 minutes of insertion. — continued on next page

This quick-and-easy puff pastry tart is inspired by a delicious curry of aubergines, tomatoes and onions that my mum makes. I have taken those flavours and added a bit of Cheddar to unite it all. The tart is great served with Coriander and Mint Chutney (on page 220) and Cucumber Raita (on page 232) in The Cardamom Trail, or a simple salad.

The Cardamom Trail:

Chetna Bakes with Flavours of the East by Chetna Makan Mitchell Beazley 2016 Photographs by Salima Rothacker

*1 aubergine, cut into 5mm (1/4 in) slices 4 tablespoons olive oil 3 red onions, thinly sliced 325g (11 1/2 oz) ready-rolled puff pastry plain flour, for dusting 4 tablespoons sun-dried tomato paste 1/2 teaspoon salt 50g (1 3/4 oz) Cheddar cheese, grated

Chetna Makan is known for her unique recipes that introduce colorful spices, aromatic herbs and other Indian ingredients into traditional Western baked favorites. Whether it’s a sponge cake with a cardamom and coffee filling; puff pastry bites filled with fenugreek paneer; a swirly bread rolled with citrusy coriander, mint and green mango chutney; or a steamed strawberry pudding flavored with cinnamon, Chetna’s Indian influences will transform your baking from the familiar to the exotic, from the ordinary to the extraordinary. Discover rare but precious traditional bakes from India, as well as new spice-infused recipes. Delve into the history of Indian herbs and spices and learn how to match foods and flavors.

Preheat a griddle pan over a high heat until hot. Brush the aubergine with half the olive oil. Working in batches, griddle the aubergine slices for 4–5 minutes on each side until they are fully cooked and brown. Heat the remaining olive oil over a medium heat. Stir in the red onions, then cover with a lid and cook for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Set aside to cool. Preheat the oven to 200°C (400ºF), Gas Mark 6. Unroll the pastry on a lightly floured baking tray. Gently score a line around the edge of the pastry, 1cm (½in) from the edge. Spread the tomato paste on the inner rectangle of pastry and cover with the cooked onions. Sprinkle with ¼ teaspoon of the salt. Neatly arrange the cooked aubergine slices on top and sprinkle with the remaining salt. Now sprinkle with the grated cheese. Bake for 25–30 minutes until the pastry is cooked and brown. Serve warm or cold. This tart is best eaten on the day it is made.

Brioche is one of my favourite breads. Although it takes quite a time to make, it is worth the effort, as these marvellous mouthfuls demonstrate. The little saffroninfused buns are filled with a luxurious mixture of cream cheese and pastry cream, and topped with crunchy green pistachios.

Saffron brioche buns with mango cardamom cream

When ready to proceed, divide the dough into 20 portions. Roll them into small balls on a lightly floured surface and place on a floured baking tray, leaving enough space between them for the buns to expand. Cover with oiled clingfilm and leave to rise for 1–2 hours or until doubled in size.

Makes 20

2 pinches of saffron threads 70ml (2 1/2 fl oz) milk, warmed 250g (9 oz) strong white bread flour, plus extra for dusting 5g (1/8 oz) fast-action dried yeast

Preheat the oven to 190°C (375ºF), Gas Mark 5. Brush the buns lightly with beaten egg and sprinkle some pearl sugar on top. Bake for 15–20 minutes or until golden brown. Transfer the buns to a wire rack and leave to cool. Meanwhile, prepare the filling. Slowly heat the milk and cardamom together in a saucepan. Remove from the heat once the milk starts to simmer.

5g (1/8 oz) salt 25g (1 oz) caster sugar 2 large eggs, plus 1 large egg, beaten, for brushing 125g (4 1/2 oz) unsalted butter, softened oil, for greasing handful of pearl sugar

In a bowl, whisk the egg yolks and sugar together with an electric whisk until pale and creamy. Sift in the flour and whisk well. Slowly incorporate the cardamom-infused milk, whisking the whole time. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over a low heat until smooth and thick, stirring constantly. Add the mango purée and mix well. Strain the pastry cream through a sieve into a clean bowl, cover the surface with clingfilm and chill. Once the pastry cream has cooled, beat the cream cheese in a bowl until smooth, then add the pastry cream and mix well.

For the filling and decoration 250ml (9fl oz) milk seeds from 6 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed

50g (1 3/4 oz) caster sugar

Put the flour, yeast, salt, sugar and eggs in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook. Add the saffron milk and mix on a medium speed for 7–8 minutes. With the machine still running, gradually add the butter, then continue mixing for another 5 minutes until the butter is fully incorporated and the dough is soft. Tip the dough into a clean bowl, cover with clingfilm and chill for 7 hours or overnight.

(See image on next page)

3 egg yolks

In a small bowl, soak the saffron in the warmed milk and leave to infuse for 15 minutes.

To assemble, slice each brioche bun in half. Spoon the filling into a disposable piping bag, cut off the tip and pipe it on to 1 side of the bun. Sprinkle chopped pistachios on top, cover with the other brioche half and serve.

Do You Know Who You Really Are? Love is who we are. I’m not sure when, where or from whom I first heard that love is who we are. I am sure that, when I heard it, I knew in my bones it was true. I knew it could not be otherwise. I knew it was a worldaltering, paradigm-shattering truth that could change everything in my life, everything in my world, and everything in our world. I just didn’t know how to translate that deep knowing into those world-altering changes. As profound as it was, the insight itself didn’t create any immediate shifts for me. It wasn’t the catalyst for my instant enlightenment. It didn’t suddenly open a direct channel to divine, loving guidance. It didn’t teach me how to think and act differently. It took me quite a while to figure out that those things were my job. It was my job to explore, experiment with and expand the insight. It was my job to reach deep inside of myself for understanding. It was my job to make it real in my life. And so I began. Clumsily, I will freely admit. To be honest I didn’t know how to begin, and so the insight initially sat, sparkling and still, on a high shelf in my mind. I could see it, but I couldn’t reach it. I would think about it and meditate on it from time to time, but otherwise I went on with life as usual. Still, it was a start. Fast-forward a few years. My business wasn’t growing at the rate I needed it to grow, and I was vacillating between frustration and despair. One New Year’s Day, I decided to review my journal entries from the immediately preceding year. I was stunned – horrified – by the way I talked to and about myself in those entries. I doubted, judged and criticized myself routinely. I complained. I confessed my deepest fears, and I kept writing about them until they became more menacing and more real.

The proverbial light bulb came on in my mind. How could I possibly succeed when I had this ever-present voice of condemnation hissing in my ear? I understood that I could not. And it finally dawned on me that my earlier recognition of the truth that love is who we are was meant to guide me. It was meant to teach me how to treat myself. Rather than trying to push myself forward out of fear or judgment, I had to learn how to love myself forward. I had to learn how to love myself, period. Later, I understood that cultivating genuine self-love does even more than help us move forward with greater ease as we go about creating our lives. It forges the vessel within which we can experience ourselves as Love. It shifts our energy field, our vibration, our very consciousness. And with those shifts come new levels of awareness and understanding of who we are and what is possible for us to experience. I began my earnest cultivation of self-love by focusing on how to dissolve self-judgment and self-doubt. I experimented with various approaches until I found ones that worked for me. As my understanding of self-love deepened, I began thinking of it in terms of a relationship, and decided to actively cultivate the qualities of a loving relationship within myself – qualities such as listening, respect, trust and compassion. Along the way I experienced moments of incredible grace, guidance and insight which helped me realize the truth, at deeper and deeper levels, of who I am. And as the realization deepened, it became easier for me to relax and trust myself. My thoughts and actions – my Doing – came into harmony with my Being. Of course, there were plenty of moments when I wasn’t — continued on next page

experiencing anything even remotely resembling harmony – moments of anxiety, frustration and fear. (There still are.) Yet even at those times, I knew that loving myself was my path back to that harmony. I might have gotten lost, but I still had my trusted compass.

Right now, you can start paying attention to the whispers in your heart of hearts.

I began to understand that, contrary to what many people say, fear is not the opposite of love. Love has no opposite. Love IS. Fear is the opposite of trust. Even when we are in fear, love is present. Love is always present to guide us.

I want you to experience the deepest level of self-love you’ve ever known, because I want you to experience the most fulfilling life you’ve ever imagined.

I started incorporating what I was learning into my teaching, my writing and my work with clients. It struck a chord. I realized that many, many people who appear to be successful and happy on the outside are, on the inside, fearful or frustrated or feeling that something is missing.

Right now, you can decide that you matter, and that what you love matters.

Now is your time. You may begin.

And countless others who haven’t experienced what they would call genuine success or fulfillment don’t yet realize their own lack of self-love is holding them back. In fact, many of those people believe that self-love is selfish, so they’ve been actively avoiding it. I am here to assure you that genuine self-love is not selfish. It is self-honoring, expansive and generous. It is peaceful. It is uplifting. It is, as I recognized all those years ago, world-altering and paradigm-shattering, in the best of ways. Self-love is the foundation upon which we cultivate a powerful, magnetic, creative Presence, one that is unobstructed by fear and doubt and criticism. When we stand in our own unique, powerful Presence, we stand in Grace. We draw to ourselves the ideas, opportunities, insights and support we need to live deeply fulfilled lives. We experience a natural generosity toward Life that arises from kindness rather than obligation. We have a sense of being at home in our own skin, living the life we came here to live.

And the good news is, self-love can be learned. It can be practiced. It can be embraced, embodied and fully realized. Why not start right now? Right now, you can intend to become more aware of how quickly you turn on yourself when things aren’t going the way you want them to, and vow to treat yourself with compassion rather than contempt. Right now, you can begin appreciating all of your wonderful qualities rather than constantly criticizing what you believe are your faults.
