While reading an email I came across an article about the incredibly fast internet connections that South Korea has. So it got me thinking about comparable costs with other parts of the world and the USA study from the New America Foundation suggests that the United States is
lagging in the broadband speed race. The study compared high-speed Internet service in major cities around the world, and found that high-speed broadband service was dramatically more expensive and slower in the United States than in leading countries outside the United States. The New America Foundation used three different methods to try to cut through the clutter and come up with fair comparisons. First, they looked at the cost of basic “triple play” bundles—phone, video, and Internet— in various countries around the world. They attempted to make the packages comparable by choosing the cheapest service in each category: only basic television service and the slowest available Internet speeds. They then ranked 57 different cities based on the price of this basic triple-play package. The most expensive city was New York, where Verizon charges $154.98 for the cheapest fiber triple-play package. AT&T offered the cheapest triple play package: $65.60 in Lafayette, LA. But internationally Riga(Lativa), Seoul and Paris offered triple-play packages for less than $40 per month. London, Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, and Hong Kong all had triple play packages available for under $50. Btw, Korea pays about $35 /month for the services

V Whether a person is willing to admit it or not, we know that, everyone has searched for Waldo at least once or twice in his or her lifetime. Spoiler Ale Warning: Not to be read aloud to or by anyone who might still believe in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny or the Tooth Fairy and definitely not by anyone who thinks the above characters are real. Note also that in speaking the language of Disney, one is required to choose one’s words carefully and to provide a translation of “character” as something else.
A friend, who I’ll call Morgan, is a “close friend” of Mickey Mouse in Disney World. Her job description reads “Mouse / Duck,” meaning she is also a “close friend” of Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck or Daisy Duck. But she has also been a “close friend” of Lilo, Stitch, Dopey, Pinocchio, and Thumper. Requirements for such a job are to be vibrant, athletic and short. Morgan is perfect. Having had a deep and binding love affair with the Magic Kingdom and all its characters for many years hasn’t hurt either. All of her abodes have revealed unique and rare collections of Disney that mingled easily with her flair for color, art, fine cooking and fun. Morgan, who resides in Florida, works six hours a day, three or four days a week as her characters. Sounds easy until you know the inside story. Unless one is lucky enough to have the job description that reads “Princess” (and we ALL want that job), the rest of the acting crew is consumed by costumes weighing between 30 and 80 pounds. The woman who plays Tinkerbell has in her contract that she must weigh no more than 95 pounds, yet she wears nearly 70 pounds of harnesses and lights. 12
Actors’ bodies are wrapped first in suits that wick away the sweat. That may be followed by intricate layers of padding and fur. Their feet are in special shoes which are then held into the larger foot, shoe, claw or paw of the character, meaning that at no time can their real feet actually get near each other. And now, they get to meet their adoring public. They are lead down corridors and tunnels, and once in the public eye, they are mute (unless they are a Princess) so that all communication is done through histrionic mime. Morgan claims that Daisy is more flirtatious then Minnie, and therefore, her gestures and movements are very different inside each of her costumes, a reminder that this is indeed, acting. While Morgan does her share of waving and acting surprised and delighted, the real challenge is this: lowering herself down to kid level to dole out hugs and then raising herself again in that hefty costume with oversized feet. Some time during the day, she will also dance at several of the scheduled Disney parties filled with music and choreography and sign autographs with an oversized hand or paw. — continued on next page

These are not jobs for the lightweights or faint of heart. Morgan has run her share of marathons and is more physically fit than most women her age. As for fainting, that’s not likely to happen. Characters are only on 20 minutes at a time before they are ushered out of their performing area. They rest and cool down backstage for 40 minutes during which time they are out of costume and drinking beverages with electrolytes. All characters have assistants or handlers who are not watching the festivities; they’re watching the crowd. They are looking
However, one of the best parts of being a “close friend” in Disney goes beyond the hugs and squeals from children; it’s the letters. Not e-mails, which the characters would never see, but the letters – scrawled words of adoration and love excitedly handed over at this revered and highly anticipated meeting of “Mouse / Duck.” Morgan has saved them all. More than once she has read that she is the best mouse or the favorite character and that she is deeply loved. But her real favorite came from a young girl who handed Daisy Duck her desire for a job:
Dear Disney World, Hello! My name is ______. I am 11 years old. In a couple of years, I would Love to work for you! Disney is the place where dreams come true. My dream is to work for you as the character Belle! I went to Disney World last year and I saw that Belle gets to star in plays, ride the rides with children, and hug children! I never get stage fright. I’m a good actor & have a good voice! I can’t work on Friday or Saturday nights. But, I’ll be more than willing to work on: Sun. Mon. Tues. Wed. Thurs. and Fri. morning & afternoon. What kind of college course do you go through to become a character? Could you PLEASE tell me what kind of salary I might get? for potential problems and seeing that the character is always safe. According to Morgan, the biggest problem for many of the characters comes in the form of adolescent boys. For some reason, touching the character as to figure out the sex of the person inside, smashing a beak, punching them in the stomach or ripping off a head is their idea of a good time. (Yet another good reason to be the Princess). One of the great perks in this job is providing those memorable childhood thrills. When Mickey kissed an 11 year old on the top of her head as she received a birthday cake, she turned to her parents and said “This is the best day of my whole life.” No doubt characters throughout the kingdom have heard that phrase more than once in one day.
And of course, the letter contains the appropriate number of hearts and stars required of such a missive. It would be wonderful if she got the job; it’s obvious she’s already a character. Maybe someday she’ll be the Princess.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service considers about 10 percent of American reptiles threatened or endangered.

The world’s reptiles—turtles, snakes, lizards, alligators and crocodiles—are indeed in trouble. The International Union for Conservation of Nature, which publishes an annual global roster of threatened and endangered species called the Red List, considers some 664 species of reptiles—representing more than 20 percent of known reptile species worldwide—as endangered or facing extinction. Meanwhile, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service considers about 10 percent of American reptiles threatened or endangered. Why care? The non-profit Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) considers reptiles “amazing creatures” with clever adaptations that have helped them survive for millions of years. CBD also points out that reptiles are valuable indicators of wider ecological health. “Because many reptile species are long-lived and relatively slow-moving, they suffer from disturbances like habitat loss or pollution for extended periods,” the group reports, adding that a diverse community of reptiles living in a given area is evidence of a healthy ecosystem that can support the plant and animal life they and other species need for food and cover. So what’s causing the reptiles’ decline? “While habitat loss is the most obvious cause of endangerment, declines are even even occurring in pristine areas from threats such as disease, UV radiation and climate change,” reports CBD. Overcollecting and unregulated hunting also are taking a toll on reptile populations. In order to help stem the tide of reptile loss, CBD leverages the court system to pressure the federal government to protect at-risk species. For instance, back in 2004 the group worked with the Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection in filing a petition to add the Tucson shovel-nosed snake, which dwells in the quickly disappearing wild desert around fast-growing cities like 14
Tucson and Phoenix, to the federal list of endangered species. Finally in 2011 the federal government agreed that it would add the snake to its list of endangered species which will help it get the habitat protection needed to ensure long term survival. CBD also works on other fronts for reptiles. The group’s campaign to outlaw “rattlesnake round-ups”—contests whereby hunters collect and kill as many snakes as they can in a year—has helped stem population declines of eastern diamondback rattlesnakes. And CBD’s efforts to educate the public about the plight of freshwater turtles, which are “overcollected” for food and the pet trade in the southern and midwestern parts of the U.S., helped convince several states for the first time to regulate turtle harvests. One way everyone can help reptile species in decline is to make our backyards friendly to them. The U.S. Geological Survey’s Patuxent Wildlife Research Center offers tips on what to plant and how to arrange a landscape to encourage reptiles and other wildlife. Landowners that take these steps may be rewarded with fewer pests, given reptiles taste for large numbers of mosquitoes and other insects as well as small rodents. Other pro-reptile tips include driving carefully (road mortality is a big issue for snakes, turtles and other species) and keeping outside areas around your property free of garbage that might attract raccoons, crows and other pests that also prey on reptiles.

What happened to all the debris that got sucked into the ocean after the Japanese Tsunami?

The Japanese government estimates that some 1.5 million tons of debris is afloat in the Pacific Ocean as a result of the March 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster. No one knows exactly how much of this debris will wash up on American shores or end up absorbed by the water column or trapped in mid-ocean gyres, but state coastal authorities from California to Alaska are readying response plans. One certain threat is invasive species. Scientists from Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center confirmed the presence of dozens of species native to Japanese coastal waters—including barnacles, starfish, urchins, anemones, amphipods, worms, mussels, limpets, snails, solitary tunicates and algae—that were on a large floating dock in Japan that washed ashore at Agate Beach near Newport, Oregon in June 2012. According to researchers, the 66 foot long dock contained some 13 pounds of organisms per square foot, and an estimated 100 tons of living matter overall. While there is no evidence to date that anything from the float has established on U.S. shores, researchers fearing the worst but hoping for the best are continuing to monitor the situation. Of course, what worries researchers more is that the dock may just be the tip of the iceberg, so to speak, in regard to what else might wash ashore. “I think that the dock is a forerunner of all the heavier stuff that’s coming later, and amongst that heavier stuff are going to be a lot of drums full of chemicals that we won’t be able to identify,” says Chris Pallister, president of the non-profit Gulf of Alaska Keeper, a group dedicated to cleaning marine debris from Alaska’s coastline. He worries that the onslaught of debris will be “far worse than any oil spill ... or any other environmental disaster we’ve faced on the West Coast” as a result of the sheer amount and variety of debris and the wide geographic scope it is likely to affect.
Officials at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) believe the Japanese tsunami debris has already spread over an area of the Pacific Ocean roughly three times the size of the contiguous United States. While some of the debris has already made landfall in the U.S., the bulk of it will take several more months to make it across the Pacific. Seattle-based oceanographer Curtis Ebbesmeyer, who has been tracking huge gyres of trash in the ocean for two decades and runs the Beachcombers’ Alert website, thinks the majority of tsunami debris will reach U.S. shores as early as October 2012. Another concern: Researchers were “startled” to find detectable levels of radioactivity from the Fukushima nuclear disaster in bluefin tuna, a favorite sushi fish, off the coast of California. While the levels of radioactive cesium were some 10 times higher than the amount measured in tuna off California in previous years, it is still below safeto-eat limits in both Japan and the U.S. The researchers are continuing to study more bluefin tissue samples to see if elevated radiation levels persist, and are also looking into radiation levels in other long distance migratory species including sea turtles, sharks and seabirds.

Softening summer heat makes August a good time to transplant some native species onto your property or into pots on your balcony. This simple activity catapults exponential benefits into our world, explains Douglas Tallamy. Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia species), milkweed, low- or highbush blueberries (Yummmmm; just yesterday, I picked and popped into my mouth 6 or 7 luscious orbs at a friend’s garden.)—they’re natives, as are violets, Jack-in-the-pulpit, lady slippers, ferns, asters, phlox, pussy willows, wild ginger and oak trees, beech, ash… There are hundreds of local native species that maintain “simplified vestiges of the ecosystems that once made this land such a rich source of life for its indigenous peoples and, later, for European colonists…” he states in Bringing Nature Home.
“Ben Franklin,” she reports, “Spent time in Britain during the 1720’s and was well connected to the vibrant world of botany and science in Europe.” He encouraged Philadelphia farmer/botanist John Bartram, who was sending American plants and seeds for decades to wealthy British gardeners, to publish a book about medicinal and culinary properties of American flora for local colonists. Earlier, in 1716 leading nurseryman Thomas Fairchild created the world’s first man-made hybrid in England.

This simple tenet is certainly not easy. Ten years ago, I purchased two native honeysuckle plants to climb a trellis arching over my roadside mailbox. They grew a little for a couple years, but never flowered much. One of them is still there and doesn’t seem to be getting bigger than a foot high. The trellis disintegrated. Next I adopted some surplus day lilies from a friend, but deer have eaten them. Last spring I wanted flowers around my mailbox so badly, I planted invasive morning glory seeds, which brought forth a few vines and a dozen blossoms before disappearing. In the fall, another gardener gave me a bouquet of dead black-eyed Susans, with instructions to simply lay them down where I wanted them to grow. Mother Nature worked through the winter to establish those seeds, so now my mailbox appears to be sprouting out of a thick patch of native flowers that support the reproduction of dozens of species of butterflies. All I have to do is weed out unwanted invaders, and my mailbox will be surrounded in Rudbeckias every summer.

• I’ve Spotted Invasives • As I’ve supported my acre and a half of lawn to return to forest this past decade, sun loving invasives have grown much faster than indigenous vegetation. Oriental bittersweet vines grow many meters each year. Some as big around as my arm are strangling my native trees. Multiflora rose bushes are popping up everywhere, and when they’re bigger than a foot high, I have to do intensive shoveling to get the roots up. Mile-a-minute vines that stick better than Velcro create thick blankets creeping onto my blackberry patch and any other plants within 10 feet from the ground. • Stewardship Is Self Care • I choose a stewardship paradigm for manually uprooting invasives, and it takes a lot of inner work to deflect the temptation to turn this activity into a vengeance-filled war. With stewardship as my context, I’m exercising necessary self care in facilitating constructive observations and thoughts that maintain my own healthy body chemistry. Another self care requirement is to armor my body against those recurved thorns and those barbs that break off in my skin leaving miniscule splinters and those splatters of soil, twigs and compost when I do suddenly uproot an unwelcome squatter. • Protection Is Comfortable • Heavy denim or quilted overalls over a heavyweight flannel shirt. Knee-high wellies. Leather work gloves. Protective glasses that wrap around to the sides of eyes. A big brimmed straw hat that ties under my chin protects me as I work under and within hemlocks, rhododendrons, berry patches, etc. Reminds me of dressing for safety when I rode Harley—appropriate precautions that come with the sport. This garden get-up feels quite comfortable, too, as did my biker garb. • Benefits are Many • I work up a sweat and drink a lot of chilled water. I exercise muscles and neuromuscular connections. My appetite is keen, and I enjoy eating heartily. I sleep pretty well. My wilder property has maintained a family of foxes and another of groundhogs, as well as attracted more dragonflies, butterflies, birds, bats, snakes and frogs, less mosquitoes and flies, and very few Japanese beetles. A doe and fawn just leisurely walked by the sunroom where I’m writing. I’m snacking on blackberries as big as my thumb picked 18

Green Tips & Tricks Don’t Have a Plot To Plant In?
Cities, housing developments, institutions all have untended niches that would welcome a little attention. Planting just one or two native plants in nooks and crannies previously neglected is a significant contribution towards manifesting a more balanced ecosystem. To create a convenient niche at your own place, use a windowbox or hanging planter to grow native species that attract insects and birds, thereby adding a new site to an expanding network of healthy, natural microcommunities. I’m a great fan of win/win collaboration, so I’ve had an arrangement with neighbors down the road to help in their garden and share in its bounty. Memorial Day, I helped a nearby friend plant cukes, beets and string beans. I just had the most delicious fresh grated beet drizzled with a little honey, sprinkled with walnuts and orange zest. And our first two cucumbers tasted heavenly with a drop of EVO and fresh cracked pepper. Friends in a nearby village have run out of garden space in their backyard, so they offered to aesthetically transform some of the neighbor’s back lawn into additional garden space. The two couples didn’t really know each other very well, yet several years of harmonious collaboration have continued to improve the ecosystem, their friendship, and their nutrition. A little less formal in his arrangements, John Chapman (b. 1774) spread apple seeds westward and later cleverly sold the established trees to settlers, explains Richard Reynolds in On Guerrilla Gardening, a Handbook for Gardening without Boundaries (Bloomsbury USA, NY, 2008). Johnny Appleseed, commemorated in 1966 on the five-cent postage stamp, was “America’s 19th century guerrilla gardener,” declares Reynolds who started Guerrillagardening.org in Britain. “Guerrilla gardening is an organic movement, in the sense that it resembles a living thing. (The word ‘organic’ is now used to mean ‘free from artificial fertilizers and pesticides,’ and while a lot of guerrilla gardening is, this is not exclusively the case.) …it has sprung up whenever the environmental conditions of society have been conducive to it. Like seeds blowing from one patch to flower in another nearby, guerrilla gardens grow and adapt to local conditions, and in time take on new characteristics, almost like new species of a genus.” Please plant and tend one extra native plant somewhere. Let’s Make Sex Fun Again! Has sex with your partner become more of a yawn than a yearn? If so, you are not alone. It’s not uncommon for couples to lose some of that initial passion and spark over time. Moreover, as the years build, a couple’s sexual repertoire can become boring and monotonous. There is no reason why sex shouldn’t be full of fun and passion, even if the couple has been together for many years. Here are some tips that will help you step out of your regular routine and make sex more passionate, exciting, and fun. Tip #1: Educate Yourself If you already knew everything there was to know about sex, you wouldn’t be reading this article right now. Any skill that we want to master in life takes education and practice. There are a lot of books and DVDs available to help you become a sex god or goddess in the bedroom—or at the very least, help you to spice things up and make sex more fun. For beginners, I highly recommend the Better Sex Series (a 3-DVD Set) by the Sinclair Institute. The information on the three DVDs covers a little bit of everything, and while they do contain graphic nudity (of 12 real couples), it is done tastefully. The newest version of the Series even comes with a music CD, to help to set the mood in the bedroom! Remember: it is repetition that will help you master new skills, so practice, practice, practice! Tip #2: Learn How to Relax One of the first steps toward making sex more fun is learning 20
how to relax your mind and your body. Before you engage in physical activity, try to clear your mind of any stressful thoughts or concerns that may have built up from your day. Focus on your partner and try to stay in the moment with them. Don’t take sex too seriously. Allow yourself to just relax and have fun. If you are someone who feels burnt out at the end of the day, having sex in the morning (or afternoon) might be just the change you need. In the morning, your body is still relaxed and you may have much more energy than you do at the end of the day. Moreover, you may be better able to connect with your partner earlier in the day, before the stresses of work, family, etc., have worn you down. Tip #3 Build Anticipation Take time to set the mood, both in the bedroom and with your partner. Leave them a note before you leave in the morning, hinting at what you want to do when you get home. Send each other flirty voice mails, emails, or text messages throughout the day to help build the excitement. If you are out and about together, whisper suggestive ideas in their ear to get them turned on. Once you’re home (or at whatever location you’ve chosen), don’t rush through foreplay. Slow down and take time to explore each other’s bodies. Let foreplay be the highlight and you’ll be surprised by how much more fun sex can be! Try to start by giving each other a sensual massage with oil or lotion. Let your hands tease their body throughout the massage, getting close…but not

too close to the areas they most enjoy being touched. Focus on the touch being pleasurable, not goal oriented. One way to build anticipation with your partner is to share sexual fantasies. Challenge yourself to allow a little vulnerability. Talk to them about something you’ve always wanted to try. Or share a memory of something they did in the past that really turned you on. Ask them what their fantasies are and explore the possibility of making them a reality.

Perhaps there is a compromise… Regardless, trust that your partner loves you and wants open and honest communication about your sexual thoughts and feelings.

As for toys, a few that I think are must haves for the adult toy chest are: (A) the Hitachi Magic Wand (approximately $50); (B) The Rabbit (approximately $80); and (C) a penis Ring (approximately $20). While the first two are (hopefully) self-explanatory, the penis Ring may not be. Sometimes referred to as “O Rings,” they come in all shapes and sizes. You can even buy them at your local convenience store, as Trojan now has a line that includes a “Vibrating Ring.” It can be found right next to the condoms! A penis ring is an O-shaped ring that sits at the base of the penis. Its purpose is to restrict blood flow, resulting in erections that are 10-15% harder and last longer than without use. As an added bonus, the increased blood pressure in the penile tissue provides increased sensation, especially around the glans (head) of the penis. The vibrating ring has a section of the ring with an element that vibrates. This area of the ring can be directed down toward testicles for his pleasure, or positioned at the top (toward the clitoris), for her pleasure.

When To Fire Your Doctor!
by: Dr. Scott Rosenthal Mrs. Lamb tells everyone that she LOVES her doctor! Sometimes your doctor provides to you? On a more personal level, do you like she is lucky enough to be kept waiting in Dr. Badside’s reception your doctor? Out of fairness to health care professionals, many room for TWO hours past her appointment time. To top it off, times less than optimal interaction with a patient is not intended. the receptionist keeps to herself and never smiles. This gives Mrs. It may result from the rush produced by an unpredictable Lamb the opportunity to catch up on all the old, torn fashion back-up or an oversight. Or, he or she might not mean to be gruff magazines and Hollywood gossip rags from 2008 that are spread or impersonal, but the clock is ticking, and there are a lot more across the table in the corner of the room. There Mrs. Lamb sits, patients to be seen. But what is amazing is how people stand by turning the dog eared pages until, with a whistle in her voice, the their doctors even when they do not like his or her treatment receptionist announces that the doctor is ready and herds Mrs. and/or bedside manner. Unless you do not have a choice, such as Lamb into a room down the hall. when no other doctor is available, it may be in your best interest to fire your doctor! Finally, Mrs. Lamb is graced with the presence of Dr. Badside. He must think eye contact is over-rated because he never makes it. She can tell the doctor must be good because he is so very busy. He always rushes to his prescription pad before she has a chance to finish her list of ailments. Mrs. Lamb feels bad that she once made him so frustrated by asking all of those “stupid” questions. He was particularly agitated and frowned when Mrs. Lamb mentioned what she read on the internet. His patronizing tone reminds her that he is the expert, and she is not capable of making the right decisions about her own health. It’s good that he wants to see her in another year because she didn’t have a chance to tell him about another problem before he ran out of the room barking for her to go to the front desk to schedule. Well, it’ll wait. Mrs. Lamb just feels privileged that Dr. Badside is willing to have her as his patient.
As a patient, it could help to view yourself as a customer. In a restaurant, retail store or bank, if you are not happy with the service, you can either go to the customer service desk and voice your concerns, or leave, never to return. If you think that your doctor is a total jerk, and there is no chance to reconcile the relationship, then take your business elsewhere. If you are not happy, but believe that the doctor can still serve you, speak up and give him or her the chance to better meet your needs. It is called a doctor-patient relationship for a reason. You need to play your part... even if it is a new concept for you to speak up to a person whom you may view as an authority figure. Your doctor’s response will clearly indicate your next move and answer the question, “Should I stay, or should I go?” Does he or she regard you with respect or disdain? Are you in a relationship or dictatorship?
How about you? Are you in the right office? Do you like the care
If you feel as if you should stay, use the following examples to help improve you doctor-patient relationship (without bruising his or her ego and causing a defensive reaction). It is important to stress

how you feel and what your needs are without pointing fingers and creating confrontation. The right approach can help your doctor refocus and start seeing you more as a customer. You will receive better care and your doctor will retain a good patient who is engaged in his or her own health. “I’m sorry, but I don’t understand the recommendation and/or what’s wrong with me. Would you mind explaining that to me once more... It’s very important to me that we are on the same page.” “I see that you are very busy today. Is there a time when I can come back or call so we can discuss this further?” “I am happy to know that the medication is there to help, but I am very motivated to make changes. I was wondering if you could recommend a way that I can alter my lifestyle instead of taking the medication?” “Doctor, what other options do you feel I should know about?” “Would you mind checking this one more time?” “Doctor, thanks again for recommending chiropractic care. What was the name of that super doctor of chiropractic?” (Sorry, I had to throw that one in.)
follow the mnemonic: OPQRST. O=onset. What were you doing when the problem started? Was is sudden, gradual or part of a ongoing condition? P=provocation or palliation. What makes it better or worse? Q=quality. What does it feel like... sharp, dull, etc. R=radiating or region. Where does the sensation radiate or is it in one place and where? S=severity. From 1-10, how severe is it? T=time. When did it start? How long does it last? Did it happen before? Consider jotting down the answers and bring them with you.
4. Keep small talk REALLY small! Would you rather use your
valuable health care dollars for your doctor’s opinion on the local sports team performance, who the next president will be, or toward helping to improve your greatest asset- your health?
Your health depends on how well you relate to your doctor. If you are not happy with his or her performance or simply don’t find your relationship to be a love, or even a like, connection, remember the choice is yours to make! Perform your part, and if they don’t, let them know. Don’t be a Mrs. Lamb. If Dr. Badside doesn’t shape up - fire him! Your life may depend on it.

Follow these recommendations to help the flow of your interaction with your doctor: 1. Organize your questions/concerns and make a written list prior to your visit.
2. Keep your complaints short and to the point! If you ankle hurts, it may not be important to tell you doctor the entire story of your life, including every time you have twisted it since you started to walk.
3. Once stated, allow your doctor to gather what information is necessary. Talk when needed and listen when appropriate. We

Health Report, the incidence of overweight dogs is up 37% since 2007. The incidence in cats is even higher at 90 % since 2007. It appears that along with this increase in obesity that the incidence of arthritis has gone up as well. The incidence of arthritis is up 38% in dogs, 67% in cats and 80 % in geriatric cats. Another statistic states that 70 % of pet owners do not realize that there is a connection between obesity and arthritis in dogs and cats. Taking all of this into consideration, it would appear that overweight dogs and cats have a higher incidence of arthritis. I have personally seen this in practice. Overweight dogs and cats do seem to have a higher incidence of arthritis. In my personal opinion, these overweight pets end up on more medication, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS), than the rest of the pet population. On occasion, an increase in weight can be due to a metabolic problem, such as hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). This is commonly seen in dogs. Your veterinarian can take a simple blood test to determine if this is the problem.
Q:
My 4 year old Boxer has recently had accidents in the house. It seems to happen after she has been lying down for a while. She will go when we take her outside but often has a puddle of urine when she wakes up. Should I take her to my veterinarian ?
A:
There are a number of different diseases that could present as urinating in the house or urinary leakage. Sometimes after a female dog has been spayed this can happen as a result of changing hormonal levels. The uncontrolled loss of urine is called incontinence. I would recommend taking your dog to the veterinarian to establish if there is a medical cause for this incontinence. A routine urinalysis and blood work will determine if a urinary tract infection is present, if diabetes is the problem or if kidney disease is the culprit. Occasionally, the bladder can develop a problem with keeping the urine in. This can often be managed with medication that your veterinarian can prescribe. Some of these conditions need to be managed on a long term basis, while others, such as cystitis (urinary tract infection), can be treated with medication for a few weeks. Your dog is only 4 years old, however, the possibility of bladder stones (uroliths) can also present as losing urine or having accidents in the house. A proper visit to your veterinarian should allow the problem to be determined.
Q:
I have a Golden Retriever who weighs 105 lbs. The veterinarian said he was overweight. How can I help him lose weight? He has hip dysplasia and has started having trouble getting up the steps. What can I do ?
A:
Unfortunately, a 105 lb Golden Retriever would be considered obese. According to the second annual State of Pet 30
As with humans, the best way to lose weight is to decrease food consumption and increase exercise. Both dogs and cats should lose weight slowly so speak to your veterinarian to determine how much weight that would be for your pet. There are prescription foods out there that can be utilized to lose weight but, in my opinion, a good balanced food with meat and vegetables if better metabolized and allows the pet’s body to function optimally. As your pet loses weight, you will find that any arthritic or joint problems improve. The weight loss will reduce the pressure on the joints thus allowing them to function better and reduce (most likely) any discomfort the pet may be experiencing.
Q:
I am looking for some alternative therapies such as acupuncture for my 17 year old cat. Can you guide me to some web sites?
A:

Should You Take A Pension Buyout? Have you recently received a pension buyout offer? If so, you need to decide if you should take the buyout, which could provide you with a potentially large lump sum, or continue accepting your regular pension payments for the rest of your life. It’s a big decision.
Clearly, there’s no “one size fits all” answer — your choice needs to be based on your individual circumstances. So, as you weigh your options, you’ll need to consider a variety of key issues, including the following:
Estate considerations — Your pension payments generally end when you and/or your spouse dies, which means your children will get none of the money. But if you were to roll the lump sum into an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), and you don’t exhaust it in your lifetime, you could still have something to leave to your family members. Taxes — If you take the lump sum and roll the funds into your IRA, you control how much you’ll be taxed and when, based on the amounts you choose to withdraw and the date you begin taking withdrawals. (Keep in mind, though, that you must start taking a designated minimum amount of withdrawals from a traditional IRA when you reach age 70½. Withdrawals taken before age 59½ are subject to taxes and penalties.) But if you take a pension, you may have less control over your income taxes, which will be based on your monthly payments. Inflation — You could easily spend two or three decades in retirement — and during that time, inflation can really add up. To cite just one example, the average cost of a new car was $7,983 in 1982; 30 years later, that figure is $30,748, according to TrueCar. com. If your pension checks aren’t indexed for inflation, they will lose purchasing power over time. If you rolled over your lump sum into an IRA, however, you could put the money into investments
offering growth potential, keeping in mind, of course, that there are no guarantees. Cash flow — If you’re already receiving a monthly pension, and you’re spending every dollar you receive just to meet your living expenses, you may be better off by keeping your pension payments intact. If you took the lump sum and converted it into an IRA, you can withdraw whatever amount you want (as long as you meet the required minimum distributions), but you’ll have to avoid withdrawing so much that you’ll eventually run out of money. Confidence in future pension payments — From time to time, companies are forced to reduce their pension obligations due to unforeseen circumstances. You may want to take this into account as you decide whether to continue taking your monthly pension payments, but it’s an issue over which you have no control. On the other hand, once your lump sum is in an IRA, you have control over both the quality and diversification of your investment dollars. However, the trade-off is that investing is subject to various risks, including loss of principal. Before selecting either the lump sum or the monthly pension payments, weigh all the factors carefully to make sure your decision fits into your overall financial strategy. With a choice of this importance, you will probably want to consult with your financial and tax advisors. Ultimately, you may find that this type of offer presents you with a great opportunity — so take the time to consider your options.

Remember Your Magnificence

This is the third of three articles featuring highlights of my recent interview with Anita Moorjani, best-selling author of Dying To Be Me: My Journey from Cancer to Near Death to True Healing. Anita was healed of stage 4 terminal cancer through a consciousness-expanding near death experience that opened her to the realization of who she is, and who we all are: magnificent beings whose very essence is love. Not only did that profound realization heal the cancer, it awakened her to a deep knowing of the joy-filled purpose of our lives, which is to express our unique magnificence. In this article I’ll share more of her insights – and an amazing story that isn’t in the book! Enjoy… Anita Moorjani
Soon after my inspiring interview with Anita Moorjani, whose clarion call to us is to remember our magnificence, I realized we had covered so much ground that I had the material for at least three articles, though I had planned to write only one. Talk about an abundant universe! Reviewing my notes, I made little symbols beside the main points to indicate topics I felt went well together and could form the basis of an article. I drew stars next to the notes I’d taken when she talked about self-love – there was the first article! – and hearts next to the comments related to manifesting our desires – there was the second article!
I had gleaned from what she’d written in her book that there was an aspect of oneness or connectedness with everyone and everything, yet at the same time she had retained a sense of her own unique essence. She was still “Anita,” and she could clearly discern distinct essences of her father and best friend even as she could merge with them. In our interview she confirmed my understanding was correct, difficult as it is to put something like that into words. I feel a need to simply pause here and let this sink in. We are One…and at the same time we are unique and distinct. It is the great paradox of Life, that two seemingly opposite conditions can co-exist. And what a glorious paradox! We have the opportunity to experience and enjoy life through the unique talents and passions that define who we are as individuals, all the while being supported by the magnificence of an all-loving One Presence that connects and uplifts us all.
Happy arrows pointed to the comments I planned to include in this third article – yet they didn’t necessarily gel into a consistent theme. They were just things she said that I really liked. In the little legend I created so I could decipher the symbols I used in my notes, I wrote “misc” beside the arrow. Pretty helpful, huh? So this is an article about the miscellaneous musings of the wonderful and wise Anita Moorjani. (And a few of my own.) Let’s I am reminded of a clear, powerful yet startling thought dive in. that showed up during a quiet moment of meditation some time I had intentionally focused much of our interview on ago. I had been worrying about something and sat down to let my how her experience and insights could inform our own lives, right mind settle and clear. As I breathed into the spaciousness of the here and now in the physical world, but I couldn’t resist asking moment, the thought came in: “I cannot fall and I cannot fail.” I her several questions about her experiences in what she refers to had a real sense of being held, of being part of an endless web that as the other realm. In particular, I was curious about her ability to supported me at all times. There was nowhere – and no way – to sense other people – her father and her best friend, both of whom fall. I could also sense the eternal nature of this web, and in that had died – even though they were not in physical bodies. moment the notion of failure simply had no meaning. all points of light in this life-giving matrix, exploring in countless ways the various experiences of being and doing; everything counted, everything mattered. There was no way to fail. I’m not sure if that even resembles Anita’s experience, but it’s what our conversation inspired me to recall. And I think that’s the way of it: wisdom shared stimulates wisdom remembered. And as we each remember what we deeply know about who we are and why we’re here, we open ourselves to ever-deeper levels of joy and fulfillment. So it goes. Of course, Anita shared other aspects of her experience that went far beyond my meditative insight! My notes about one of these in particular had several big arrows next to them. Here is what she told me: Toward the end of her illness, as her cancer worsened and she became sicker and weaker, Anita stopped eating. Naturally her husband and mother were deeply concerned and tried tempting her with her favorite foods, yet at some level she had given up and just couldn’t eat. Then out of the blue, she began craving a particular Chinese dish that had been the favorite of her best friend (the one who had died). That is all she would eat – and she did eat, at least for a while. Later, when she was in the other realm during her near death experience (NDE), she realized that during that time her
friend – the essence of her friend - had actually merged with her to instill in her a desire to eat. Okay, I don’t know about you, but…I think that is amazing and very, very cool. The merging of essences! Yet aside from all the mind-blowing implications of what our ability to merge with each other might be – most of which I have yet to fathom – thinking about her experience later opened me to this deepened insight: What we love is, in a real sense, who we are. And in being who we are – in honoring and celebrating what we love – we help others in profound ways. Her friend’s great love for Anita, expressed through her pure delight in a Chinese meal, literally kept her alive for a period of time. She helped Anita by being herself. Let’s pause again and let that one sink in. She helped Anita by being herself. Just imagine all the ways you are helping and inspiring others by simply being yourself. Know that you are. Now back to Anita and something else that intrigued me about her experience. When she was in the other realm she had a choice to make: she could stay in that realm or return to life in a physical body. I wondered, do all of us have that choice? The friend of a dear friend of mine had just lost her beloved daughter to suicide, and my friend wanted very much to comfort her. She hoped Anita might be able to provide a perspective that could help, so I promised to ask Anita about that during the — continued on next page interview.

Anita’s sense was that not everyone has the experience of a choice – often it is simply our time, and there is no further decision to be made. And she seemed clear about two things. First, if someone does have a choice and decides to stay in the other realm, it is a very blessed choice. The other realm is so magnificent and all-loving that coming back is actually a more difficult choice. So if you’ve lost someone, know that they are in a place of great love. She also said that those who choose to stay in the other realm may be more needed in that realm. I love pondering that; apparently we continue to serve a loving purpose regardless of which realm we are in!
Which is, of course, Anita’s central message:
We are magnificent beings whose very essence is love. Our forgetting of that truth gives rise to all that we would consider unwanted in our lives and in our world; our remembering of it restores us to wholeness and joy.
At the close of our interview I asked Anita what she most wanted people to take away from our conversation. She said, simply and clearly, “Don’t take life seriously. Don’t take yourself seriously. Find your joy. The more you find joy, the closer you are to your authentic self. Of course, knowing or believing that may not alleviate the heartache and perhaps even the guilt we feel when we lose a loved one “too soon.” We wonder if we did or said enough, or enough of the “right things.” Anita was very firm in her conviction that guilt serves no purpose. She said a much better emotion to cultivate is compassion – especially compassion for everything you think you’ve done wrong. Guilt diminishes us. Compassion expands us. Only love can bring us back to remembering the love that we are.

Q:
Two years ago my husband left me, I started to drink, take medication and was very troubled. Now I feel old, crippled and lifeless and this method of coping is not working for me. Is there any help in having an osteopathic evaluation?
A: Q:
I have had an initial treatment with you and my biggest complaint was severe bilateral foot pain. I had some complaints in my neck and back area and noticed you worked everywhere except my feet and my foot pain was significantly better. I do not understand why working elsewhere gave relief to my feet and how come all the work I had done on my feet prior gave me no relief?
A:
Keep in mind every patient is different and with foot pain, every patient has a different cause so I will share some consistent principles that should clarify the intricacy of fascial pain. First principle, pain nearly all patients has an origin that is not at the site of pain. for example, carpel tunnel syndrome patients often have a history of pneumonia and scar tissue in the rib cage. Foot pain has a few likely suspected dysfunctions to consider far from the feet. The first place I look is an overall tight fascial system that is the body stocking of connective tissue. (The most obvious example is a pregnant woman for whom every inch of fascia has been stretched and the final place where the tensile forces are imposed is in the soles of the feet. Hence foot pain is common in pregnant woman.) A patient who I recently treated had a very severe scar on the lateral trunk after having a mastectomy, reconstruction and a subsequent revision. The scar tissue was deep and adhered to the chest wall. For her first visit I worked mostly on that scar, making it more mobile, releasing the places it was attached and releasing and integrating the tissue around it and the influence it had on the arm, torso, hips and yes it was affecting the feet. I know this to be true because on the first visit I purposely did not work on her feet in order to get a baseline on how much this scar on her chest affected her feet. Other areas on the body could be the tailbone or coccyx, the junction of the coccyx to the sacrum as well as the junction of the very last lumbar vertebra to the sacrum can all be places where a rotation or shift can irritate nerves that provide input to the feet and result in foot pain. There are also areas of the brain that are responsible for function in the feet. If you get injured in the head and affect the specific spot on the brain that correspond to the feet pain may result. If when someone presents with foot pain or pain anywhere for that matter, and you address that specific spot alone there is a high probability that you will not affect or change that pain. Approximately 97% of the time, the problem is not at the same place where the patient is complaining of pain. 36
Human nature can allow us to experience relationships in ways that affect our minds and cause symptoms to show up in the body. For example, if something happens to you in childhood that makes us feel unworthy, it will change your posture. One may stand with the chest caved in, head forward slumped shoulders as a way to protect the heart. Subconsciously trying not to be seen, as someone may discovered the distorted truth and find you truly unworthy. This postural adaptation will affect your breathing. How you breath will affect how you react to situations whether you panic or stay calm, yell and react or reassess. All this follows you into relationship. Your foundation is unsteady in relationship and because you feel unworthy you may lose yourself in your partner. Trying to find yourself outside yourself you become disconnected to you authentic self, your desires, your true feelings. When the relationship ends you are empty and lost; disconnected. Drugs and alcohol fill the gap for a while but this is a dead end solution and in the meanwhile you are trashing your organs and cells causing more stress on the body. Muscles do not work well, posture gets worse and pain begins. You seek help for the physical pain. In osteopathic treatment, affecting the posture, touching the pain as it presents in the physical body, following the tendrils as they thread back to the emotional body is truly the only way to complete healing. Transformation of these influences allows you a solid foundation. reconnecting with your authentic self will allow you to have good relationships. There are times two people separate, work on their issues, come out whole, meet again and give it a second healthy try. As you become healthier you will resonate and vibrate with whole and healthy people. For many this means all new friends and new fresh relationships. Pain free in this case happens from the roots up. Healing emotions, freedom of the body, better posture, better breathing, feeding your cells and organs invigorating food, reconnecting with yourself, caring for yourself thus attraction of goodness. What a thorough recipe for healing!

recipes: on the grill favorites Korean style Short Ribs BBQ 1 1/2 cups lite soy sauce 1/4 cup agave 1/4 cup sesame oil 3 tablespoons canola oil
Honey and Curry Glazed Squash
8-10 cloves of fresh garlic, crushed
5–6 pounds summer squash, such as zucchini or patty pan squash (flying saucer) 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil Kosher salt Ground black pepper
4 pounds Korean-style short ribs
6 large green onions, chopped roughly
Glaze 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter 1/4 cup honey 1 tablespoon cider vinegar 2 teaspoons mild curry powder 1/4 teaspoon chipotle chile powder Prepare the grill for indirect cooking over medium heat (350° to 450°F). Wash the squashes under cold water. Using a heavy, sharp knife, cut the ends off of each squash and then cut each squash into 4 or 6 pieces. Using a tablespoon, scoop out and discard the seeds and pulp. Place the squash pieces on a sheet pan and brush the flesh with the oil. Season with salt and pepper. Brush the cooking grates clean. Grill the squash pieces, skin side down, over indirect medium heat, with the lid closed, for about 30 minutes. Meanwhile make the glaze In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the glaze ingredients and cook until the butter is melted and the glaze is smooth, about 2 minutes, stirring often. Remove from the heat. After the first 30 minutes of cooking, return the squash pieces to the sheet pan. Close the grill’s lid to maintain the heat inside. Brush the flesh with the glaze, return the squash to the grill, and continue to roast over indirect medium heat, with the lid closed as much as possible, until soft and tender, 30 to 40 minutes, glazing every 15 to 20 minutes. Season with more salt, if desired. Drizzle with the remaining glaze and serve warm. Serves: 4 to 6

Toasted sesame seeds Combine the soy sauce, agave, sesame oil and canola oil in a large mixing bowl. Add garlic and green onion and stir together. Put short ribs into large sealable freezer bag (you may need two). Pour marinade into bag and turn bag over several times to ensure all meat pieces are covered. Refrigerate for at least four hours, but preferably overnight. Turn bag at least once in the middle of the marinating process. Heat grill to medium-high heat before adding the meat. Drain excess marinade off short ribs and grill them until medium, about 6-8 minutes. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds and chopped green onions. Serves 6. NOTE ON RIBS: Korean-style short ribs can be found at most Asian markets. The cut is called “flanken,” a strange word that refers to a strip of beef cut across the bone from the chuck end of the short ribs. Most short rib recipes call for individual bones cut into thick pieces. Kalbi is unusual in that it calls for 3 ribs, cut lengthwise across the bones, so that you end up with a strip of meat about 8-10 inches long that has 3, 1/2-inch rib bones lining the top.
Grilled Fruit with Bourbon Glaze
1/4 cup bourbon 2 sticks butter, softened 2 cups light brown sugar, packed firmly 2 lemons, juiced 1/2 cup water Assorted fruit cut in 1/2 (peaches, pineapple, melon or plums) Put the bourbon into a saucepan over medium-high heat and bring it to a boil. Boil for 1 minute to burn off the alcohol. Add the butter, brown sugar, lemon juice, and water. Bring to a boil whisking until all the sugar is dissolved. Simmer for 5 minutes. Let cool to thicken. Toss fruit with the glaze to coat or brush glaze over fruit with a pastry brush. Place fruit on the grill and turn once when light grill marks appear. Serve on ice cream, pie, or by itself.

When All Hope Is Gone Rediscovering Your Spirit and Will By Joe White
Perhaps you got here when you lost your job after 10 years, or your partner has left you for someone new, a medical illness, or even when you wake up with a birthday with a zero next to it. How you got here is less important than the fact that you are here. You are in the rut of life. Your desire, passion, and laughter are all gone. “All that is left” is the sinking feeling that tomorrow will be just like today... and that can’t be good. I must admit I have been there... more than once. To be honest - it was being there that lead me to change my life. I would love to tell you that I changed my life because I was inspired to help others and live my potential. Yet, the truth is - it was “out of desperation”, not ‘inspiration’ that I changed my life. I was at my darkest point, and if I didn’t change, I would not make it out alive. In the end it really doesn’t matter what drives you to change - as long as you change. I am not saying that change is easy, actually staying the same is easier and change can be hard. It is easier to stay stuck in what is comfortable than to step outside what is familiar. The true measure is when we come to realize that we can not stay where we are any longer, and we must change now. For me it wasn’t when I overdosed or when my heart stopped or when the EMT had to bring me back to life; it was watching a TV infomercial for a set of personal development tapes that stated that they could change my life. As Robert Frost wrote, “It is the road less traveled” and ‘that’ it is. I would like to share with you some core principles that I created to help me get out of the rut. Looking back, these have been the back bone of my personal transformation. Feel free to borrow them or.... heck, you can even keep them. You can revise them or add some of your own. Regardless of what you do, do something instead of just sitting there waiting to be run over.

Feeling ‘there are no more options’ is like walking the plank on a pirate ship. There are always options, even if you can’t see them yet!

4. The only way I fail is if I give up.... Don’t ever give up! Make it easier to feel better about yourself. You can’t measure your success by every little battle or you will lose the war. Look further for your answer and deeper for your solution.\ 5. All I need is within me now.
When you make your wants into needs it is always a recipe for disaster. Recognize as they did in the Wizard of Oz... that all you really need in life is already within you. Everything is seasonal. Every winter turns into spring and night into day. If you are in winter, your spring is coming. It always does. The American Lung Association has created a new State of the Air® smartphone application, a life-saving resource for people living with lung disease like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), people with heart disease or diabetes, as well as older adults and children.

The State of the Air® app enables users to enter their zip code or use the geo-locator functionality to get current and next-day air quality conditions. The app also provides levels of both ozone and particle pollution, and pushes out alerts if local air quality is code orange or worse. Depending on the severity of the day’s air pollution, the app will provide vital health recommendations – advising that outdoor activities should be rescheduled or that people who work outdoors should limit extended or heavy exertion. The air quality information is based on data made available to the public by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Identifying and Overcoming Blocks to Concentration, Self-Esteem and School Success with Vision Therapy

Behavioral problems in children are often linked to developmental or learning disorders, prompting parents to turn to a pediatrician or child psychiatrist, who routinely prescribe medication such as Ritalin and Adderall. But did you know that visual dysfunction can be at the root of behavioral and learning issues, the detection of which goes beyond the standard 20/20 tests?
improve the way the eye to brain link performs. Once individuals become aware of their visual difficulty and can control it, they can ultimately reintegrate that control into effortless function. Many parents of children who have completed vision therapy find previous behavioral issues alleviated and, in some cases, no longer need medication or subsequent treatment for those issues.
Something seldom known is that certain visual dysfunctions – such as eye muscle imbalance or difficulty converging eyes inward can actually bring about behavioral and learning issues that present as ADD, ADHD, and dyslexia, among other behavioral and learning disorders. Even more concerning is that the standard 20/20 test isn’t enough to detect the full spectrum of visual dysfunctions that one can have. As a result, such visual issues are often missed and misdiagnosed as the aforementioned behavioral disorders and learning disabilities.
