We want to wish all of our readers a Happy and Healthy New Year! Now, back to reality; time to attend to the little extra bulge acquired during the holidays by many of us. That‘s what they call “cause and effect”, the literal damage from the holiday season. Honestly, I can live without all of the cookies and extra calories but I find it really hard to get used to no Christmas Carols. Christmas Carols playing in the background, everywhere you go, I will miss.

Check out p10 for the new color of the year “Emerald” “Lively. Radiant. Lush...” And the most abundant color in Nature, the color of renewal and prosperity. I know that all of you have already made your New Year’s resolutions —Oh, those wonderful resolutions we make year after year. Many times, it’s the very same resolution. Who decided that we had to make a “resolution” in the first place? Does the New Year have to come with change, warranting each of us to have some sort of redemption for the year we have left behind? By ringing in the New Year, we can once again hope for recovery, losing weight, quit smoking, getting healthier and prosperity. Nevertheless, it would be much less stressful working towards achieving these things day to day rather than expecting that they will magically happen at the stroke of midnight.

Perhaps if we set the resolution that by the end of the year “I will accomplish this..” It takes some of the pressure off giving us some time to concentrate on getting it done.. So sit back, relax and enjoy your copy of LWM. Everything else can wait because we have more time. Monitor pollution with your smart phone

Caffeinated Cracker Jacks!

The Cracker Jack’D line,will contain a variety of products, including snack mixes, popcorn clusters and ‘Power Bites’ wafers. Among the Power Bites products are two flavors that will contain coffee, a natural source of caffeine, as an ingredient,” Frito-Lay spokesperson Chris Kuechenmeister said in a statement provided to CSP Daily News.

Computer scientists at the University of California, San Diego have built a small fleet of portable pollution sensors that allow users to monitor air quality in real time on their smart phones. The sensors could be particularly useful to people suffering from chronic conditions, such as asthma, who need to avoid exposure to pollutants.

CitiSense is the only air-quality monitoring system capable of delivering real-time data to users’ cell phones and home computers—at any time. Data from the sensors can also be used to estimate air quality throughout the area where the devices are deployed, providing information to everyone—not just those carrying sensors.

Just 100 of the sensors deployed in a fairly large area could generate a wealth of data—well beyond what a small number of EPA-mandated air-quality monitoring stations can provide. For example, San Diego County has 3.1 million residents, 4,000 square miles—and only about 10 stations.

Kuechenmeister said, “Because it is a natural constituent, the caffeine content of coffee varies. As the products have not yet been launched, we are still in the process of optimizing the product design. At this point, however, we expect them to contain approximately 70 mg of caffeine from coffee in each 2-oz. package.”

The Center for Science in the Public Interest, which is known for targeting such products as movie popcorn and energy drinks, got out ahead of the new product line’s debut, saying in a press release: “If government regulators don’t take some kind of action, products like Frito-Lay’s Cracker

Recycled Cigarette Butts Recycling pioneer TerraCycle has partnered with Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company to launch the Cigarette Waste Brigade, the first cigarette butt recycling program to operate in the U.S. The free program will allow any individual, bar/restaurant owner, building manager or antilitter group to clean up the butts and other tobacco-related waste from their local communities. For each pound (about 1,000 butts) of waste collected through the Brigade, $1 is donated to Keep America Beautiful.

“The Cigarette Waste Brigade® has the potential to transform public spaces across the country, drastically reducing the amount of litter that is discarded,” says TerraCycle CEO and Founder Tom Szaky. “Furthermore, the Cigarette Waste Brigade will provide a solution for the filters that are properly disposed of in an ashtray or can, but today still end up in a landfill.”

The Ocean Conservancy and Keep America Beautiful cite statistics showing cigarette waste as one of the most prevalent forms of litter worldwide, with 65% being improperly discarded. KAB even estimates that 38% of all roadside litter in the U.S. is tobaccorelated. The butts recycled with TerraCycle will be pelletized and used to make industrial products like shipping pallets.

The addition of caffeine to a growing number of snack foods comes at a time when warning bells have sounded over the hazards of caffeinated energy drinks. FDA officials said they have received reports of 13 deaths linked to 5-Hour Energy shots over the past four years. The FDA is also investigating heart attacks attributed to Monster energy drink, including the death of a 14-year-old Maryland teen.

An excessive amount of caffeine can cause heart palipitations, increased blood pressure, nausea, dizziness, and insomnia -- and kids may be particularly sensitive to the chemical’s effects.

We might soon see caffeinated breakfast cereals to get going in morning,” Jacobson said in an interview.

Actually, there already is one: An instant oatmeal called Morning Spark. There’s also caffeinated beef jerky, sunflower seeds, and breath fresheners.

Besides the energy drink craze, caffeine has also been added recently to foods you’d never suspect like the lowcalorie beverage Crystal Light, Sport Beans jelly beans, and MiO Liquid Water Enhancer, a flavoring that’s squirted into water as well as an instant Oatmeal called Morning Spark, caffeinated beef jerky, sunflower seeds, and breathe fresheners.

Back from: The Biggest Loser Fitness Ridge I left for the Biggest Loser Resort with an initial weight of 326 pounds and I am happy to say that I left part of myself in California, actually 60 pounds of myself.

Before I start to tell you guys how my life has changed, I think that I need to do a “previously on” for those of you who are new to the life of Sean.

Previously on the “Life of Sean” About six years ago I was crossing the street in New York City when suddenly I was hit by a BMW SUV going 40 miles per hour. Fast forward 3 years and it is discovered that I have four herniated discs in my back, they fixed one of them, and left the other ones to fend for themselves. About a year later I go to the doctor with what I thought was a cold, but instead I’m diagnosed with heart failure. That day I learned my heart functions at 15% of that of a healthy heart. Over 100 pounds later and there I was, devoid of hope and had long ago given up on life. That’s when I got the notion in my head to go to the Biggest Loser Resort in Malibu, CA, and after being there for eleven weeks my entire lease on life has been renewed.

I have told my story to different guests over 100 times and that “previously on” is the 1 minute version, I have gotten very good at telling it.

The Departure As the date of my departure to California grew closer I became more and more apprehensive about taking the trip. The more research that I had done the more indication I had that I was getting myself into something way more intense than I had done in years. Lack of responsibility and accountability is very detrimental to the entire bodies health. So in preparation for leaving and beginning this new lifestyle; my family and I made a very ‘healthy’ decision together, since I was planning to be gone for Thanksgiving, we decided to have Thanksgiving dinner in September, and that is the last normal traditional Thanksgiving dinner I will ever celebrate. When I say traditional I mean about four full plates of food and of course plenty of refills on drinks.

That is the last meal that I will ever have eaten ‘unconsciously’, because the next day when I went to the airport my life changed forever.

The Arrival The flight out was pretty uneventful, besides the fact that Terell Owens was on my plane. I had never been to California and I was very excited for the perfect weather I had heard so much about. I tried my hardest to put everything from my mind and come to terms with the fact that I was going to be stuck in a torture factory with very little food to eat.

Arriving at LAX was cool and it was the first time that I have ever had a driver waiting for me with a sign that had my name on it.

The resort was in Malibu, so the drive was about an hour long, I spent most of the ride trying to see where the Hollywood sign was, which I never did see during my stay in California.

Finally, I arrive at the resort. Where I am immediately greeted by smiling people, scrambling to get me settled in and as comfortable as possible because the secret is, they knew what was in store for me and were being very careful not to scare me away.

They said that I had to go upstairs to weigh in and get my measurements done; nobody likes to get on a scale, let alone in front of a complete strangers. Mimi and John were the first trainers that I met and right off the bat we were joking around and I was starting to feel very comfortable. We did a little photo shoot, and I get to show the camera some love, that was the first time ever that weighing in was fun. I was taken to my room by Joel, who at the time he was just a hiking guide, and Joel was a bit more frank with me about what I was going to experience, at the same time I was super excited for what was to come, and a little more scared than I was before.

It was awesome to have a friend around my age right off the bat. The first thing I did when I got to my room was set up my technology, I had brought my Apple TV, which lets me have access to pretty much any movie or TV show I wanted.

Throughout my ordeal I had been able to find solace in television shows, they allowed me to connect and live vicariously through other people, they brought me out of my own reality to a reality where I wasn’t myself, and that was a good thing at the time. After watching TV for a while I realized that I was in Malibu, California and it was gorgeous outside, so I made myself go outside and get some fresh air, something that had become unfamiliar. That’s when I met the first guest I had seen since my arrival. Her name was Amy, and she was going to be at the resort for a total of 16 weeks, which I thought was crazy, because I was planning on being there for 8 weeks and that seemed like a lot to me, so 16 weeks sounded like an eternity. We determined that she was my neighbor and that we didn’t really have much in common, so I went off to go find someone I could relate to better. Little did I know that she would become one of my best friends at The Biggest Loser Resort and that our mutual support for each other would push us to work harder than either of us felt we were capable of doing.

Joel kept pace with me the entire time, and we stopped just about every 5 minutes so that I could snap a picture, which was actually a technique that I used as an excuse to stop and breathe for a second. My survival on that hike is owed to Joel, half way up I felt like I was gonna die, but Joel told me that I wasn’t gonna die, that this was The Hike something I would have to get used to if I was going to be Every morning we would start the day off with a nice little successful. At orientation, I got to meet so many new people and made friends with people that I would never have met under any other circumstances and many of them would soon become my friends that I hope to have forever. Everybody was pretty nervous about our immediate future, but everyone was so nice that I couldn’t wait to be tortured (trained) with them.

My nerves were put to rest after getting assigned to my van and seeing that Joel was going to be one of my hiking guides.

Did I mention that it was about 100 degrees outside? It is different in California though, it’s not a Delaware 100 degrees where you have to wade through the humidity which can be extremely miserable. A California 100 degree day is still hot but it is very dry and I was actually able to function

Actually, we have a complete set of the “Where’s Waldo” Books and have successfully found him in all of them, ...Well almost all of them, except for one. After my third week, is when I really saw a major difference in my hiking kung-fu. I had the opportunity to go back and hike Backbone Encinal again, and I utterly destroyed that hike, all the way to the top only stopping once or twice on the way up compared to my first hike where I was stopping every few steps. More importantly than what numbers you see on the scale is how you feel when you do what you have to do. The hikes started feeling different, I started looking forward to that next hill that would make me feel like I was dying, because it is things like that, that make you stronger.

A trainer at the resort said to me words that almost became my mantra, “you have to learn how to be comfortable, being uncomfortable.” those words forced me to push myself harder, if I wasn’t sore and aching everywhere by the end of the day I was doing something wrong. My feeling uncomfortable became a better gauge of my health than any number could be. Note there is a difference between being good healthy sore and just being in pain, pain is not something you want to strive for.

I heard about it, I was scared of it. I think I pictured it as Mt. Doom from the Lord of the Rings series, it was called Sandstone peak, not nearly as menacing as Mt. Doom, but still pretty daunting. Throughout my 11 weeks I did deal with some injuries, the only people that exercise for 6 hours a day are professional athletes, and I was no athlete. There were multiple occasions where I tried to schedule trips to Sandstone, but it would seem in anticipation of it I would inevitably hurt myself and not be able to go. Time started to fly by and it was my last week, I had stayed injury free, but I was starting to get sick. Nevertheless, Sandstone was finally conquered and it was a lot easier than I imagined and more beautiful than any hike I had been on. The only thing that made it hard was the fever that I had, but by this time I had learned how to be comfortable being uncomfortable.

In my time hiking I also learned that you should not tell TJ that something is too hard, or that there is a hike that is too hard that you really don’t want to do again, because TJ is there for a very important reason: to make sure every morning you are getting your ass kicked and changing your definition of hard. So many times I went to TJ saying, “this hike is too hard” or “I need something easier today” and she would make sure I was on a hike that was right above my comfort level. And as frustrating as it was sometimes I am so grateful that she showed very little mercy on my comfort level because the results have been incredible.

Recycling ?

IS IT Living Up to Its Promise?

Americans still don’t recycle as much as they could.

Nonetheless, the practice is already considered a huge success given that it keeps about a third of the solid waste we generate out of our quickly filling landfills and saves natural resources while generating much-needed revenue for struggling municipal governments. Recycling also helps us keep our carbon footprints down: According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, recycling one ton of aluminum cans conserves more than 1,665 gallons of gasoline.

Brown says that the availability of curbside recycling programs varies throughout the country, as does their success. For example, New York City was a pioneer in recycling, but when the city became strapped for cash, recycling rates fell precipitously to just 15 percent and have not recovered. “New York City officials claim it is more expensive to recycle than to send trash to landfills and incinerators for disposal, and that they have to weigh those costs against environmental goals.”

Of course that doesn’t mean the progression from virtually zero recycling just 40 years ago to today’s U.S. average of 33.8 percent has always been smooth. Some types of materials, especially mixed plastics, have proven difficult and/or expensive to recycle, causing skeptics to question the overall value proposition.

But well managed recycling systems that focus on profitable resources like glass, paper and metals have been a big success.

And why wouldn’t they be, when recycling uses as little as five percent of the energy required for virgin production of materials such as aluminum?

On the other end of the spectrum is San Francisco, which has been steadily increasing its recycling and composting and is now up to over 77 percent. Even more incredibly, the city is aiming for zero waste by 2020. Brown lauds San Francisco for structuring its recycling program to promote the desired behavior. “Curbside fees are charged on a ‘pay as you throw’ basis for trash, while recycling and compost are free, creating a financial incentive for following the law and sorting your waste.” Brown adds that programs like San Francisco’s prove that recycling can be economically viable besides being good for the planet.

Sara Brown of Presidio Graduate School reports that, while recycling has gained significant momentum during the last two decades, it has still not yet realized its potential. “Unfortunately, recycling pick-up services are not cheap and it is viewed as a redundant service; extra trucks mean extra cost. On top of that, single stream recycling requires investment in technology to sort the loads efficiently,” she says. “Trash, on the other hand, is far more indiscriminate because everything just goes to one place, the landfill.”

Brown acknowledges we’ve come a long way with recycling but that there is still great potential to do more. A November 2011 report entitled “More Jobs, Less Pollution” by a coalition of groups including the BlueGreen Alliance, the Natural Resources Defense Council and Recycling Works! advocates that the U.S. government mandate diverting 75 percent of our waste coast-tocoast by 2030. The result would be 1.5 million new jobs as well as significant pollution reduction and savings in water and other resources.

While waste diversion nationally is relatively low, because of the sheer size of the waste stream, recycling has grown into an important part of the U.S. economy.

Moreover, a number of cities have achieved considerably higher waste diversion rates and provide successful models that show a path to a significantly stronger recycling economy.

In terms of MSW, (Municipal Solid Waste) five materials comprise about 77 percent of the almost 250 million tons of total MSW generated in 2008: paper and paperboard, yard waste, food scraps, plastics, and metals. Organic components made up about 64 percent of total 2008 MSW generation.

In addition to MSW, 178 million tons of C&D(Construction and Debris) waste was generated in 2008. The C&D stream includes wastes generated from demolition, renovation, and new construction. Two materials dominate C&D waste and comprise roughly 70 percent of the total: concrete and mixed rubble (45 percent), and wood (25 percent). In 2008 approximately 30 percent of C&D debris generated in the U.S. was diverted (recycled) and 70 percent was disposed.3 Virtually all recovered C&D waste was recycled; almost none was composted. Similarly, virtually all C&D disposal was via landfill and very little was incinerated.

ome people just seem to ooze sex appeal (think Samantha Jones and Christian Grey). Granted, those are fictional characters that both have a lot of experience under their belts, but don’t worry if you don’t—with a little coaching and practice, you will be radiating sexy in no time. The truth is we are all capable of being sexy. Like everything else in life that’s worth having or doing, it takes effort and dedication to perfect those skills. Whether you are trying to meet a stranger, or rekindle the art of seduction after years in a relationship, these are some guidelines to follow in perfecting your skillset.

Your Appearance…

Regardless of personal style, there are some general rules to follow in the art of being sexy. Both men and women should be clean, well groomed, and have clothes that are clean and pressed. For men, try combining both casual and business attire to create a look that is polished, yet relaxed. For women, ditch the “cute” outfits, and go for something that makes you feel sexy. If you feel sexy, chances are you will give off that vibe to others. I recommend a

pair of fitted pants/jeans or a flattering skirt. Find a blouse that is flattering for your figure, and hugs you in all the right places. Top it off with a pair of heels—in addition to the extra lift they give your bum and the illusion of longer legs, they will also help you get into the mindset of being sexy. Finally, smell is a turn-on for most people. Find a perfume or cologne that will lure them into wanting to get closer to you—just don’t overdo it, or you may find yourself alone.

Master “the look.”

Eye contact is a must. But it is not just about looking someone in the eye. What you say with your eyes can make or break the deal.

Learn how to deliver a look that will stop them—dead in their tracks. Don’t know what I mean? Here’s an excerpt from Tracey Cox’s book, Superflirt: The best look I’ve ever received was from a guy sitting opposite me in a restaurant. glasses of wine, ate salmon fishcakes but skipped dessert (doesn’t have a sweet tooth), divulged plans to buy a house on the river, would love to come to Peter’s place for dinner next week and if the neighbour’s cat pees on his front porch one more time it’s history.

Not that I was looking at him or eavesdropping or anything. I was hardly noticing he was there. OK, in between staying supremely focused on the work issues I was discussing with a colleague (not), I might have darted a few (65 billion) little glances at him.

He looked at me just once. His eyes slid up, caught mine and then, maintaining eye contact, he sat back, put down his knife and fork and simply stared at me. His lips curled in a half-smile which made me drop my eyes to look at his mouth and that’s when he caught his bottom lip with his teeth, released it slowly and then, when my eyes went back up to his, smiled. It wasn’t a ‘Would like to get to know you’ smile. It wasn’t even an ‘I’ve watched you watching me’ smile. This was predatory: a we-both-know-I-could-make-youfaint-with-pleasure smile. I suspect he was right because I damn near fainted on the spot, without him even touching me. Now, that’s what I call sexy.

Nothing shows confidence as much as eye contact. Hold it for 2-3 seconds, while giving your best “we-both-know-I-could-makeyou-faint-with-pleasure” smile (or whatever signature look you’ve mastered). If you don’t know where to begin, see my suggested resources at the end of this article and start practicing!

Confidence In order to exude the aforementioned level of confidence, you must indeed believe that you have the knowledge and skills to make someone faint with pleasure. Educate yourself about male and female sexuality. I highly suggest purchasing educational videos from the Sinclair Institute, if you are someone with very little sexual experience or if you have low self-confidence in the bedroom. It has to be genuine and sincere, which means doing some work on your part to learn everything you can to feed that level of confidence. Insecurity is a turn-off for most people. The more insecure you seem, the less attracted they will be. If all else fails, seek the help of a professional to help you work through whatever issues might be holding you back.

Be Playful.

Being playful while seductive begins means attracting others in a fun, non-threatening manner. The goal is to make the person laugh and feel at ease with you. People are more responsive when not feeling threatened or coerced by someone. A U.S. study found that women were more likely to give their phone number to a man who seemed to have a good sense of humor. The study also indicated that men perceive humor as an attractive characteristic in women.

Be Flirty.

Knowing how to flirt is a must when one is trying to be sexy. Learn how to use your body and body language to send a message of interest. Be sure that your body is facing the person and that your appearance is that of being open. For instance, don’t cross your arms, as that is a position of being closed off. If you are talking to the person, lightly touch them on the hand, arm, or shoulder.

Try to find a way to move into their space a bit. Loud places are great for this! It gives you the opportunity to lean in a little when talking to them.

Pay Attention.

Pay attention to their body language. There is a fine line between being seductive and being creepy! If the person does not respond to your eye contact by reciprocating it—they’re probably not interested. If the person pulls away or seems uncomfortable by a light touch on the hand/arm/shoulder—they’re probably not interested! Turn your attention elsewhere.

New Year’s Resolution: Appreciate Yourself!

“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine!”

An inventory is what I call my year-end assessment.

That’s the basis for setting my new year’s intentions.

Some years ago, I switched from the word ‘resolution’ for two reasons. First, because our collective consciousness has so much “failure” baggage around this custom of formulating goals for the coming calendar year. Second, my free associations all reveal a personal negative bias - revolution, revolting, roulette….

Revolution is violent, therefore a last resort. The word revolting implies disgusting. Roulette gives me only narrow, highly unpredictable windows for winning.

Starting out with these images did not support my proactive commitment to enjoy life’s ongoing challenge to change. (Rigor mortis is the alternative.)

So, I set about reframing this annual opportunity to make it lighter, easier for myself. (Flexibility and open mindedness are among a myriad of benefits.) And it is my purpose now to offer you a paradigm shift to boost your enthusiasm for this improvement game that many of us start to play every January.

• Admirable Character Traits• My inventory process takes stock of what pleases me about my choices and actions the past year, as well as what didn’t go so well. This is where the magical tool of self-appreciation begins to work on our behalf. I 20

appreciate my better character traits and the successes they generate. I appreciate my good intentions for actions that produced less-than-desirable results as I evaluate them and consider corrective measures.

“If you are not making mistakes, you are not growing” is a bit of Eastern wisdom that reframes disappointment, self-blame, or self-criticism. Even if my results are yucky, I can give myself credit for setting worthy goals and attempting to reach them. Self-appreciation frees me to try other ways to more effectively pursue those goals. Self-deprecation holds me hostage.

• Where’s the Inspiration? • As the year came to a close I stumbled upon my need for greater self-appreciation. The last week of December, “Happy New Year!” rolls off my tongue so easily • like a bowling ball gliding the glistening length of paste polished lane. It’s a sincere wish, a heartfelt blessing for you. It’s a radiant vision of you through each turn of calendar pages. And it’s what I want most for myself, too. Suddenly, I feel as though that bowling ball just landed on my foot. Decades of cultivating peace, joy, love and service have been a pretty good life, but another year of upgrades isn’t inspiring me the way it used to. Clunk! Insight dawns when I’m trekking the bleak forest and realize those trees are resting. Rest is as vital to growth and change as the spaces between musical notes are to a concerto.

Ahhhh yes, the cyclical holistic ebb and flow are both vital to fulfillment. To be creative and complete, to feel my place in the world and my connection to it, I now focus inward to first acknowledge my value, my being. From that foundation, doing is filled with grace.

context for this year’s intentions. Self-appreciation is the vase and my intentions are the flowers I arrange to complement that container.

• Softer, Gentler Gradient • At inventory time, I used to gloss over my successes and concentrate on setting goals to fix the causes of errors, upsets, disappointments. I needed to be better than before. I wasn’t quite good enough. Now, self-appreciation inspires a softer, gentler improvement gradient. When I really like myself just the way I am, I feel excited to realize more of my potential. As I’m growing my assets, it’s easier to fix some of my faults.

“It’s good to have an end to journey towards, but it is the journey that matters in the end,” declares Ursula LeGuin, 20th century American author. A Harley poster portrays an aerial view of a lone biker cruising up a deserted switchback mountain road on a gorgeous summer day reminding us, “It’s about the journey, not the destination.”

• Enjoy the Process • To create a no-fail self-appreciating resolution, focus on process rather than results. Results are merely feedback opportunities for putting in corrective measures along the way. Process is the enjoyable journey. For example, a resolution to lose 10

pounds will either succeed or fail. Even if you lose nine pounds that critical committee in your head, all too often, labels you a failure. Such baggage encumbers the joy of learning and growing.

Instead, reformulate that quantified goal as a pledge, a process, to eat one additional fruit or vegetable every day, and you open up to enjoying self-improvement as though it were a magical adventure.

Self-appreciation guides you on your journey to explore delectable discoveries in the grocery produce department. This time next year, you may have succeeded only 10% of the time, but your year-end balance sheet reflects bottom-line improvement.

Success. Maybe you’re only 2 pounds lighter. Progress. Okay, now try adding another daily serving of fresh fruit or veggies for a year. Or wear a pedometer and gradually increase your daily walking. Keep developing enjoyable strategies to do better, and that 10-pound loss will be the eventual result. Plus, the weight loss will be sustained because it’s the way you live, not a quick fix to hide sagging self-esteem. Self-appreciation is a strong, solid

foundation for cumulative change.

• Make Progress Pleasant • Process, like climbing a ladder, allows you to move closer and closer to your desired destination. Process allows you to space the rungs of that ladder close enough to make progress pleasant, step by step, resting awhile when you need to, then resuming your upward trek feeling refreshed and ready to move on. Selfappreciation keeps that ladder stable.

Any quality you admire in another has to be present in yourself or you wouldn’t recognize it. What if you spent a year celebrating all your positive character traits? Create a self-appreciation journal, and write in it daily. The self you are appreciating glows brighter and brighter like Tinker Bell’s aura when everyone applauds.

The self you are appreciating may turn out to be a much, much Greater Self than you’ve ever imagined.

About a hundred years ago, American essayist Agnes Repplier wrote, “It is not easy to find happiness in ourselves, and it is not possible to find it elsewhere.”

I have many! H&M is my favorite. If I could shop online with them, I would. I did email H&M asking when online shopping would be available. They said this fall but now it has been pushed back. Other favorites are J.Crew, Forever 21; for inexpensive trendy pieces and accessories, Target, Asos.com, ShopSosie.com, Loft.com, Etsy.com, The Clover Market in Ardmore (for Vintage pieces), Francesca’s and I always hit TJ Maxx and Marshalls.

I always have a Revlon Nail polish on, usually red. I have been wearing All Fired Up by Revlon a lot lately.

I would get a Louis Vuitton Speedy 35.

8. What is your all-time favorite outfit that you ever wore?

My wedding dress. I also love my classic black J.Crew Scuba pants with my Aldo tan suede boots with a stacked heel, a black top and any large loose scarf.

9. What are your favorite style magazines and blogs?

Cupcakes & Cashmere (blog), Instyle Magazine, Glitter Guide Blog, The DayBook Blog and Cosmopolitan magazine, for fun.

e all have that spot. It’s a desk top, closet, bedroom, office, garage, a basement; a space so cluttered, so unorganized, so filled with stuff and nonsense that it is no longer functional. And one day, for some reason, we look at it all with new eyes. A new reality sets in; we gasp in dismay and wail out loud, “How did it get like this?”

Let me tell you: it’s called the “Stuff of Life”…all those dramas that take our time away from our home and the things in it. Did you go back to school, get divorced, get a promotion, or have a baby? Are you working long hours? Did you move, find yourself on a dozen committees, get married? Did someone get sick, have an accident or pass away?

Don’t several of these dramas happen at the same time? If we’re coping with all this, something has to give, and usually it’s how we treat our home and the things in it. We develop some bad habits along the way.

We fling mail onto the kitchen counter, drop things on top of the dining room table, shove things under the table, store new purchases in the corner of the closet, toss things into the basement, hang clothes on the exercise machine, drop clothes on the floor, pile up the laundry, stack the magazines and newspapers into corners. We’re forgetting things, losing things, buying more of what we can no longer find. There isn’t time to go back; we’re too busy trying to keep up with everything else.

All that piling, tossing, dropping and flinging eventually costs us dearly. We promise ourselves “we will get back to this some time later,” but when we don’t, we encounter massive clutter and constipated spaces that no longer have a function or purpose. We feel overwhelmed and anxious; we don’t invite friends over anymore. Worse, we can’t stand to be in our own homes.

Professional organizers will get you through two basic phases of reclaiming your space: honesty and strategies for success. Honesty begins with questions. If the dining room table and the area around it resemble a time capsule it’s time to think if you really need a dining room at all. Could it be something else? If we want the dining room, what’s the new strategy for maintaining one?

If the kitchen is strewn with paper, the question is, do you want to deal with your mail and your bills in the kitchen?

If so, how will you manage that paperwork so you can still cook? If the kitchen needs to be a kitchen, then how do you get the paper out to where you want it? How do you cope with the daily onslaught of mail, junk, bills, and magazines?

If that spare room is a towering mountain of things, think how you need to use this bit of real estate. Do you want this spare space to be an organized storage room or closet instead? If so, then a strategy for success might mean attractive shelving and storage units or clothing bars mounted to the wall.

If clothing is hanging from the exercise equipment, are you really using this equipment and if not, would it be handier to have clothing racks or hooks and shelves here? Be honest. Don’t pretend you’re going to use that equipment if you prefer long walks outdoors or the gym. * Will you continue buying in bulk? Did you set up a spare pantry in the basement? Do you use all those kitchen appliances? How many plastic containers without lids do you need? Toys; is there a rule about where they live and when it’s time to recycle or donate? Is there really a life-changing article that you’ve missed lurking inside those 200 magazines you’ve saved?

We’ve all heard about the woman who saved $10,000 a year using coupons. $10,000 a year is a part-time job. This woman created a daily, organized routine to get those coupons from the newspaper into her purse, out to the car and through check out before the expiration date. Do you really use coupons? Have a strategy for success or toss them.

There is nothing anyone can buy to keep clutter at bay that is better than a good habit: think of the coupon lady. There’s a woman with priorities. What routines or rules would make a difference for you?

I know; it’s a lot to ask of yourself when you’re looking at a home that has come to resemble a landfill. But a little honesty about how you function in your space and how you want it to look will go a long way in helping you find successful solutions to coping with clutter and feeling welcomed in your own home. *To donate used exercise equipment: Contact Charles Darling at therimrattler@yahoo.com. Stuck In Disappointment? The Gift & The Lesson - A Life That Matters! By Joe White It doesn’t really matter in which area of one’s life it occurs. It could happen in love or a career, or perhaps a hope or a dream that comes crashing down. Plain and simple: we don’t like feeling disappointed, especially when it is something that we truly wanted. We have all heard the phrases that are supposed to make us feel better when we feel our worst. “This too shall pass.” “If it didn’t work out then it was not meant to be.” “If it doesn’t kill you, it will make you stronger.” And the list goes on... Yet, it doesn’t necessarily make us feel better. I can honestly say, in the midst of a heartache when someone says, “Let it go, it will work out if it is meant to be,” my brain goes, “B.S.! But I want it to work out!” Even when the truth is staring us in the face. Even when it is telling us that what we desire is not under our control. Sometimes it does not make us feel any better in the moment. We often need something more, something stronger, to get us unstuck!

I have to say that in my 14 years of coaching people to create breakthrough results, being stuck in disappointment sits high on the list when I ask individuals, “So what brings you to me today?”

This disappointment usually occurs when an individual’s straight line of life takes a sharp bend in a different and usually unwanted direction. We become sad and angry and seek out the answer to “why”. We may try to “fix” the situation even if the situation is not for us to fix. The disappointment builds and builds, and so does the intensity. (This is usually when I am called for a complimentary session.) The spiral begins to turn deeper and deeper with every endless loop question. We must right ourselves and begin to move forward... Now!

intense focus on: 1. themselves, 2. what they have lost or what has been taken away from them, and 3. how it will negatively impact them and keep them from being happy in the future.

Sounds daunting doesn’t?

I believe that disappointment, as with all things, is something that is here to serve us. Life is something that happens for us, not to us!

We may not always enjoy what we are feeling, but nonetheless, its intent is to serve us if we allow it. How do we recognize how it’s serving us? Two ways: one is a gift, and the other is a lesson.

The gift is what is meant for us at this present moment. It is something we must have to heal, let go or hold on to. Perhaps it is the knowledge that you are stronger than you thought you were, or that you have recognized your ability to love completely and fully. Sometimes the gift comes in the form that will cause you to appreciate even more all that you have. The gift is essential, but the real gem is in the lesson. The lesson is the most valuable piece, for without it, we will continue just making the same mistake over and over again. We must not just understand the lesson but learn it and apply it to our life. It is in the application of the lesson that we move towards greater growth, contribution, and fulfillment.

One thing is certain, as long as you are living your life in areas that matter, you will have times of disappointment and sometimes even great disappointment. You can either be crushed by it or rise above it! It’s your choice. Live Free.

Yoga is a very telling practice. It is an opportunity for you to get to know your body and all of the areas that are tight not just physically but mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

In your practice you are not only striving for symmetry of muscular length and strength and proper bony alignment but balance in your thought processes and connection with the energetic aspects of Being. Kundalini rising is the energy (Prana ) moving up the spine, this canal, the (Shashumna) and through all the Chakras or Energy centers along the way. If there are blockages, belief systems or patterns of trapped energy these will be revealed and be expressed many different ways.

My teenage daughter is recovering from foot surgery and is not as active as she usual. She has been complaining that whenever she eats sugar her neck and upper shoulder area hurts. The doctors are baffled. Can you make a connection between these seemingly unrelated yet absolutely consistent and nagging complaints?

You have given me several clues. First, a teenager probably does not have the greatest diet. Second, the recent inactivity is likely significant. Both of these clues lead me to a possible conclusion. That it may be her lymph system is overloaded by poor dietary byproducts. Many people who are active excrete these toxins by sweating through exercise. This enables them to ride the line and walk the tightrope of symptoms, no symptoms.

They feel a little yucky, sweat, exercise, feel better. Inactivity closes the gap and topples the apple cart. Then minor dietary infractions cause symptoms. Sugar as a toxin is insulting to the system anyway, especially if it is in the form of high fructose corn syrup. Sugar does also make a temporary and immediate shortening of the muscular tendons where they attach to the bones. Together the over saturation of the lymph with toxins, the lack of excretion, the shortening of tendons and additional toxic input; more sugar, could very likely present itself as neck and shoulder pain. My 11 year old Maltese is starting to show signs of aging. We have been using a monthly flea and tick topical “spot-on” formula that is commonly in pet stores. Sometimes we buy it at the veterinarian’s office. Are these products safe for my aging dog? We really don’t see fleas on her ever. Thank you.

A:

Most topical “spot-on” products for fleas and ticks commonly found in the veterinarian’s office or a pet store or super store contain ingredients that can be harmful to your pet. Most of these are made with pesticides .

These ingredients, after being applied between the shoulder blades on the skin, enter our pet’s liver, kidneys and intestines and finally get excreted through the feces and urine. Not only are the pets themselves exposed to these toxins, but the people that interact with them are exposed to the toxins as well. Imidacloprid, fipronil, methoprene, permethrin and pyriproxyfen are some of the common ingredients found in these products. All of them have been linked to serious side effects in laboratory animals. Fipronil, for example, has been associated with thyroid cancer, skin problems, convulsions, body twitches, loss of appetite, labored breathing, reduced fertility and reproductive damage to name a few. Imidacloprid can cause organ damage to the liver, kidney, thyroid, heart, lungs, spleen, adrenal, brain and gonads. It is also considered a teratogen causing increased miscarriages and smaller offspring. Permethrin can cause organ damage to the kidney and lungs, along with bone marrow changes, tremors, incoordination, increased aggressive behavior and elevated body temperature. It too is a teratogen affecting fertility. Methoprene can cause liver enlargement, headaches, eye and throat irritation, difficulty breathing, confusion, dizziness and nausea in humans.

application. There are natural products out there that do not contain toxins and work just as well, if not better , than the ones previously described. A product that I recommend is called Parasite Dust. It contains Neem, Yarrow and Diatomaceous flour. I have seen it kill fleas almost immediately on contact, if not, shortly after. It works to repel fleas, ticks, lice and mites. The best thing to do is read the ingredient label to see if the product contains any of the described toxins. Contact your holistic veterinarian to guide you to more natural methods of flea and tick control.

Q:

I have heard a lot of talk lately about essential fatty acid for pets. My dog is 11 years old and just gets a vitamin supplement. Should I add fatty acids to her regimen?

A:

Fatty acids are specific types of polyunsaturated fats. The most commonly talked about in veterinary medicine are the omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids. Dogs and cats can produce some fatty acids but need to get others from their diet. Most of the commercial pet foods contain ingredients that provide omega 6 fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids tend to be less in the diet.

Some fatty acids are destroyed by overheating them. Sometimes improper storage or not enough antioxidants in dry food can cause the product to become rancid and result in a deficiency of fatty acids. It is for this reason that some pets require supplementation with fatty acids.

The common omega-3 fatty acids include alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The common omega-6 fatty acids include linoleic acid (LA), gamma linolenic acid (GLA), dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA) and arachidonic acid (AA). Indications for the use of fatty acids include conditions that involve inflammation. As such, fatty acid supplementation can be beneficial in arthritis, colitis, inflammatory bowel disease, allergies and autoimmune conditions. Fatty acids are also helpful when hair coats are dull, dry and brittle. I have seen remarkable results occur in 2-3 weeks of supplementation.

Hair coats appear clear and shiny. It has also been shown that fatty acids seem to slow down the growth of yeast, in particular, Malassezia sp., a common yeast infection of the skin and ears. It has also been shown that omega-3 fatty acids can slow down the development and metastasis (spread) of particular cancers. It is also suggested that omega-3 fatty acids reduce hypertension (high blood pressure) and prevents ventricular arrhythmias (conduction disturbance in the heart). There is also the benefit of fatty acids reducing levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.

There are a number of products on the market that contain fatty acids. In veterinary medicine it is the omega-3 that needs to be supplemented. I would recommend a veterinary product when purchasing these products as the ratio of omega-3 to omega- 6 fatty acids must comply with what companion animals need.

Many veterinarians have seen side effects of these products on pets. One instance that I personally saw was a male boxer who ended up with third degree burns, the size of a half dollar, on its skin at the location that the topical product was applied. The burn showed up within 24 hours of the

Let me explain.

The Next Amazing Version of You By Suzanne E. Eder It’s that time of year again: time for me to come up with something fresh, helpful and possibly humorous about starting a new year.

I just reread my January column from last year and realized I’d pretty much captured, in that article, all I’d want to say about setting intentions for a new year. So where do I want to go from here?

Hmmm, I wonder if Brian and Diane would mind if I just resubmitted last year’s article with a new date and title? I wonder if my readers would mind? I’m sure everyone’s forgotten what I wrote, so reading it again would seem like a totally new experience.

That’s not a bad idea! But not a particularly creative one, either.

Efficient, maybe, but not creative.

Or is it? No, I don’t mean the recycling-an-old-article idea. But it just occurred to me that the very choice I made to reread a previously written article is actually a great way to get my creative juices flowing – because it gave me an opportunity to appreciate what is already good, fun and useful about my writing.

Now don’t worry, I’m not going to write an article about my writing process, other than to highlight its simplicity: I allowed myself to actually appreciate how my writing has evolved, and then I asked myself, “So where do I want to go from here?” Then I recognized that this basic, two-step process is incredibly useful not only for stimulating new article ideas, but also for setting intentions for the New Year.

Let me explain.

Too often, in our zeal for fresh starts and wanting to move as quickly as possible into our slimmer bodies, peaceful minds,

fulfilling careers, deeply satisfying relationships and lots and lots of money, we set specific goals that reflect our assumed “end points” for those experiences. Consciously or unconsciously, we fall into the trap of believing that we’ll be happy when we’ve reached those end points, which are way out in our future. And in the meantime? Well, we’ll just have to grin and bear it and push as hard and fast as we can to get to where we want to go.

The difficulty with that approach is that it deprives us of satisfaction and enjoyment right now. It also, by the way, runs cross-current to our very nature. As I said in last year’s (quite competently written) article, happiness is not a thing we can obtain or a point in time we can “get to.” It is a vibration, a state of being from which our experiences flow. The happier we are, the happier the circumstances we attract and create.

And here’s why: in this vibrational universe, our attention is a powerful creative force. It’s like a frequency tuner. What we focus on becomes the frequency we’re on, and since like frequencies resonate with each other, this means that the essence of what we pay attention to becomes the essence of what we attract. So when we set goals that arise from our attention to the lack of what we have now – such as not enough money, or a career that isn’t fulfilling, or a state of health that lacks vitality - and as we keep paying attention to the gap between where we are and where we want to be, we’re on the frequency of not having what we want.

And so we perpetuate our experience of being in the gap.

When we set intentions to create or experience more of what we want, and then pay attention to anything and everything that matches the “more” right now, we perpetuate the experience of having what we want.

And it gets even better than that! When we not only pay attention to, but appreciate, the things in our now experience that match the “more” of what we want, we accelerate the experience of having more of what we want. Appreciation is a vibration that lines us up with more things to appreciate.

When we take the time to thoughtfully acknowledge and deeply appreciate all we have accomplished in the past year, we reinforce a self-identity of someone who has what it takes to create a fulfilling life. We initiate a spiral of positive momentum that carries us into our next phase of growth.

Which brings me back to my simple process for jumpstarting the writing of this article, one that we can adapt to the setting of intentions for the New Year. When I reread last year’s column and allowed myself to appreciate its good points, I was in the vibration of “good writing.” When I asked, “So where do I want to go from here?” I stayed in that vibration with a focus on expanding it. And then I started writing.

And when we ask ourselves, “So where do I want to go from here?” rather than, “So what do I need to fix or improve about myself?” we build on that momentum rather than stopping it in its tracks.

Had I reread last year’s article with a critical eye and zoomed in on all the awkward and unclear places, I would have been in the vibration of “bad writing.” And from there it would have been easy to find more to criticize, or to try figuring out how to fix what’s wrong with my writing – or to close the laptop, walk away and hope the good writing fairy would visit in time to meet the submission deadline.

From the “bad writing” vibration, had I asked, “So where do I want to go from here?” I would likely have answered, “As far away from this computer as I can.” Actually, from that vibration my next question would likely have been something along the lines of, “So what’s the point?”

I might have been tempted to simply give up.

And isn’t that what often happens as we trudge into the New Year with resolutions we’ve set in order to fix what is “wrong” with us? We think the outer goal itself will galvanize us into action, not recognizing that inspired action and inspired results arise from our inner sense of empowerment and our ability to sustain positive momentum.

You might ask, “But what if my accomplishments from the past year have nothing to do with what I want to create in the new year? What if there is nothing for me to appreciate about, say, my progress toward a more stable financial situation?”

The fundamental process is still the same. Take time to genuinely acknowledge and appreciate all you can about yourself and your life. Intend to get on the frequency of “my life is good and getting better all the time” by noticing progress you’ve made in any area – and don’t overlook significant progress you may have made on the inside. Maybe you’re far less reactive than you used to be, or you’ve let go of old resentments, or you’ve finally started supporting rather than doubting yourself. These are significant!

Those positive shifts in your internal vibration will ultimately lead to positive shifts in your external circumstances.

So you’ve taken the time to really feel appreciation for all you’ve accomplished this past year. Now you ask, “So where do I want to go from here?” And in this example, you really want to improve your financial situation. Don’t be tempted to criticize yourself for not yet being where you want to be. Stay with the good feeling of self-appreciation, and let yourself imagine how great it will feel when you’re making the progress you want to make in this area.

Ask yourself helpful questions such as: In what ways am I already good with money?

When we start from a place of lack or self-judgment – we don’t have enough money, we’re too lazy to stick with a good diet and exercise program, we can’t seem to get it right in the relationship department – we are hardly in an empowered place. We can try forcing ourselves to take action toward our goals but deep down we don’t really believe we can meet them.

What ideas do I already have, about how to get to an even better place with money, that I’m willing to take action on?

So we might be tempted to give up.

How could I make this process fun?

There really is a better way to create the experiences we wish to create. And it starts with understanding that our desires for change arise from our evolutionary impulses to grow. We’re not broken and in need of fixing. We’re simply where we are - and expanding into our ever-growing potential.

The idea is to focus your attention – your frequency tuner – to the frequency of success. Which is why it’s so helpful to start by appreciating all the ways you already are successful, and then expand from there.

Here we are, that time of year again. Maybe a little blue that the holidays are over and maybe a bit depressed realizing that with the New Year you brought with it some extra pounds. Once again, we finding ourselves at the same place we were last year. Forcing us to make the same New Year’s resolution, we have made for the past ten years, hoping year and after year that this year will be different. When it comes to choosing a diet program there are many to choose from but not many that actually work. Why? Because when it comes to diets many make it easy enough to lose weight, but not many teach you how keep it off. For many people in this country losing and or maintaining what is considered to be an appropriate weight is difficult if you love to eat, have developed a sluggish metabolism, or simply developed bad eating habits.

Many popular diet programs are based on (women) 1,600 to 2,400 (men) 2,200 to 3,000 calories per day, (often much less) diet plans and some are based on an even lower calorie intake per day. Chances are that at the end of the day your calorie intake is going to exceed well over 2,000 calories. Because 2,000 calories may sound like a lot, but it isn’t, depending on your food choices. For example, a burrito from Chipotle (average filling) can contain your entire calorie allowance for the whole day, with well over 1,000 calories. A McDonald’s Quarter Pounder with Cheese is 510 calories, now add a large order of fries for 500 calories, and your at 1,000 calories of primarily carbohydrates and fat. You can see just how easy is to rack up calories in just one meal.

The truth is that there is no magic pill to make you lose weight and get healthy. If you want to be successful at losing weight and living a healthier life, you have to make choices, make changes, and exercise every day.

I recently viewed the Biggest Loser’s Facebook status and thought it summed it up rather well. “Would you rather be sore or sorry”?

While I believe that the best weight loss success comes from individuals learning to make good healthy choices along with calorie counting and some sort of exercise regime, it isn’t easy to do on your own, so a little extra help to get you started isn’t a bad idea. Many of the diet options such as Jenny Craig and Nutrisystem can be helpful in giving you an idea of food portions; however, it’s not realistic to think that you can stay on them forever. Programs such as The Biggest Loser Resorts, is a vacation / spa like atmosphere where all of your meals are prepared for you, trainers, nutritionists and staff, work with you to teach you about nutrition and exercise, hoping to lay down the ground work you will need to help you succeed once you are on your own.

The program was started in Melbourne, Australia and later began operations in the United States in 1985. Today, the company is headquartered in Carlsbad, California, and has been a part of Nestlé Nutrition since 2006. The program combines individual weight management counseling with a menu of frozen meals and other foods, which are distributed through its centers or shipped directly to clients.

Abs Diet from Men’s Health Magazine —Researchers at Georgia State University developed a technique to measure hourly energy balance. How many calories you're burning versus how many calories you're taking in. The researchers found that if you keep your hourly surplus or deficit within 300 to 500 calories at all times, you will best be able to change your body composition by losing fat and adding lean muscle mass.

In a similar study, researchers in Japan found that boxers who ate the same amount of calories a day from either two or six meals both lost an average of 11 pounds in 2 weeks. But the guys who ate six meals a day lost 3 pounds more fat and 3 pounds less muscle than the ones who ate only two meals. It works is because it does something that many diets don't do: It keeps you full and satiated, which will reduce the likelihood of a diet-destroying binge.

Bicoastal nutritionist Kimberly Snyder, CN, created slimming solutions for clients such as Drew Barrymore and Fergie with a complex and strict green-centric plan (zero gluten or dairy), as outlined in her book, The Beauty Detox Solution.

Olive oil is particularly characteristic of the Mediterranean diet. It contains a very high level of monounsaturated fats, most notably oleic acid, which epidemiological studies suggest may be linked to a reduction in coronary heart disease risk. Have Back Pain? Are You Overpaying For Relief? Are You Getting The Best Care?

Ever see the majestic figure of a Humpback whale off the bow of a boat? Ever feel the rush of hitting the lottery? Ever experience the accomplishment of pushing to the end of a marathon? Ever shout with joy from winning a reality game show? Ever gaze down at the earth from Mount Everest? I certainly hope that you polish off many of the items that fill your bucket list. Unfortunately, another bucket list exists with items that most Americans will experience, but wish they wouldn’t! This list contains events that embarrass, terrify and hurt. I may not be able to help you avoid producing an unexpected bodily sound at a board meeting, or keep bad luck

or poisonous spiders out of your way, but I can provide you with valuable insights for the best and most cost-effective ways for handling an event that happens to nearly all Americans - lower back pain!

It is estimated that up to 85% of people will experience back pain at some point in their lives.1 As one of the most common reasons for seeking a doctor’s care, the treatment of back pain costs all of us over 50 billion per year.2 Additional indirect costs, such as lost time from work and the resulting drop in productivity, are estimated to cost up to an additional 19.8 billion each year.3 With — continued on next page

such costs, one must examine treatment options where value for the dollar is brought into play. This is especially important in today’s environment where health care spending is spiraling out of control.

Treatment of low back pain is frequently conducted by one of three types of physicians- medical, osteopathic or chiropractic.

The cause of lower back pain is the result of one or a combination of factors ranging from intervertebral disk disorders, spinal misalignments to muscular issues. The medical and osteopathic treatment toolbox primarily contains use of narcotic, analgesic, nonsteroidal, and muscle relaxant drugs. The chiropractic approach focuses on gentle corrective adjustments of the spine, tailbone and pelvis.

When insurance companies provide equal access thus allowing doctors to do what they are trained to do without hurdles or restrictions, what is the outcome? Which would you choose?

Which doctor would provide you with the best result at the best price? The question of cost was answered by a 2010 study that evaluated lower back pain care for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee’s fully insured members over a two-year period. The 85,000 BCBS subscribers had open access to medical/osteopathic or chiropractic physicians without the need of a referral. The study’s conclusion brings good news, not only to your aching back, but to your wallet: “This study provides a unique opportunity to evaluate an insured population with open access (including identical copays and deductibles) and an unlimited number of visits to providers via self-referral. Our results support a growing body of evidence that chiropractic treatment of low back pain is less expensive than traditional medical care. We found that episode cost of care for low back pain initiated with a chiropractic physician is less expensive than care initiated through an MD or osteopath. Paid costs for episodes of care initiated with a doctor of chiropractic were almost 40% less than episodes initiated with an MD... Our results suggest that insurance companies that restrict access to chiropractic care for low back pain may, inadvertently, be paying more for care than they would if they removed these restrictions.”

The researchers estimated that allowing chiropractic-initiated episodes of care would have led to an annual cost savings of $2.3 million for BCBS of Tennessee.5 This significant savings is not only important to insurance carriers, but for the uninsured patient faced with a sea of decisions regarding how to spend precious healthcare dollars.

You now know that chiropractic care provides a more economical solution to back pain, but is it more effective? A 2010 study at the University of British Columbia found that care for lower back pain by chiropractic physicians is significantly more effective than

“usual care” provided by medical physicians.6 What if your back condition is more serious than expected and you are told you need surgery? For years, patient’s have put off surgical recommendations and found relief through the hands of a chiropractor. At times, this took a degree of bravery and defiance to go against the medical recommendation and concern of family and friends. For most, the payoff was tremendous and surgery, with it’s potential adverse reactions, was avoided. New research has found that initially seeing the doctor of chiropractic is a must prior to getting the most common form of surgical intervention for herniated (“slipped”) lower back disk problems.

The 2010 study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics compared chiropractic care to lumbar microdiskectomy surgery. The following was revealed: 60% of the patients who were considered surgical candidates improved EQUALLY with chiropractic care as to those who received surgery.

The research also found that the patients who eventually needed surgery had equal results, even when the surgery was delayed by undergoing chiropractic care first. The study’s authors concluded that chiropractic care should be considered as a first line of care for herniated lumbar disks that cause sciatica.7 When examining the expense of this common back surgery it was found that if chiropractic is utilized first, it will save $2.75 billion dollars each year.8 Surgery is roughly 12 times the cost of a fullcourse of chiropractic care.

If (it may be more realistic to say “when”) you have lower back pain, the following list will provide you with the best plan of action: Act promptly!

Make the doctor of chiropractic your first contact.

If you have already received other care, it’s never too late to get a second opinion from a chiropractor.

If you are facing lumbar surgery, consult with a doctor of chiropractic to see if you are a candidate for care.

Insist that your insurance plan offers unrestricted access to chiropractic care.

recipes: soups on!

Cream of Artichoke Soup 4 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 3 leeks, white part only, washed well and chopped 2 clove garlic, minced 1 medium or 2 small potato, peeled and chopped 2 (8-ounce) packages frozen artichoke hearts, thawed

Corn Chowder 6 cups chopped sweet onions (4 large onions) 8 tablespoons unsalted butter (one stick) or margarine

4 cups vegetable stock 3/4 cups plain yogurt 1/4 cup half & half

1/2 cup flour

3 tablespoons parmesan cheese

2 teaspoons kosher salt

4 tablespoons chopped chives, for garnish

1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

salt and pepper to taste

1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric 12 cups chicken or vegetable stock 6 cups medium-diced white boiling potatoes, unpeeled (2 pounds) 10 cups corn kernels, fresh (10 ears) or frozen (approx. 3 pounds)

Heat olive oil in a heavy, large pot over medium heat. Add the leeks and the garlic and stir. Add the potatoes and cook for 5 minutes, stirring often. Add the artichokes, stock, salt, and pepper and cook until the vegetables are tender, about 25 minutes.

2 cups half and half (substitute using non-fat, half and half, regular milk or skim milk)

*Using a handheld immersion blender, or in a blender in small amounts, puree the soup. Add the yogurt & half and half.

1/2 pound sharp white cheddar cheese, grated

Ladle the soup into serving bowls. Top with sprinkled parmesan cheese and chives.

In a large soup pot on medium heat add the onions and butter and cook for 10 minutes, until the onions are translucent.

Stir in the flour, salt, pepper, and turmeric and cook for 3 minutes. Add the stock and potatoes, bring to a boil, and simmer uncovered for 15 minutes, until the potatoes are tender. If using fresh corn, cut the kernels off the cob and blanch them for 3 minutes in boiling salted water. Drain. (If using frozen corn you can skip this step.) Add the corn to the soup, then add the half-and-half and cheddar. Cook for 5 more minutes, until the cheese is melted. Season, to taste, with salt and pepper.

* Blending hot liquids: Remove liquid from the heat and allow to cool for at least 5 minutes. Transfer liquid to a blender or food processor and fill it no more than halfway. If using a blender, release one corner of the lid. This prevents the vacuum effect that creates heat explosions. Place a towel over the top of the machine, pulse a few times then process on high speed until smooth.

Traditional Lentil Soup

Chipotle Lentil Soup

2 tablespoons olive oil 1 cup finely chopped onion

1 tablespoon canola oil

2 cloves finely chopped garlic

1 small onion or 1/2 medium, chopped

1/2 cup finely chopped carrot 1/2 cup finely chopped celery 2 teaspoons kosher salt

LENTILS

1 pound lentils, picked and rinsed

1 1/3 cups brown lentils, rinsed and picked over

2 quarts chicken or vegetable broth

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground toasted cumin (optional) 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground *grains of paradise Place the olive oil into a large 6-quart Dutch oven and set over medium heat. Once hot, add the onion, garlic, carrot, celery and salt and cook until the onions become translucent, approximately 7 to 8 minutes. Add the lentils, tomatoes, broth, coriander, cumin and grains of paradise and stir to combine.

Increase the heat to high and bring just to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover and cook at a low simmer until the lentils are tender, approximately 35 to 40 minutes.

Using a stick blender, puree to your preferred consistency. *Grains of Paradise, also Known as: Melegueta Pepper or Alligator Pepper Origin: West African Taste and Aroma: A rare and more sophisticated substitute for Black Pepper. Peppery, full flavored, citrusy, powerful, with traces of cardamom and ginger.

2 teaspoons cumin seeds, lightly toasted and ground 1 tablespoon tomato paste

1 cup peeled and chopped tomatoes 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground coriander

2 large garlic cloves, minced

6 cups water Salt to taste

Bean & Lentil Chili

1 to 2 canned chipotles in adobo, to taste, rinsed, seeded and sliced, plus a teaspoon of the adobo sauce

2 tablespoons olive oil 1 medium onion, chopped 1 green bell pepper, seeded and cut into medium pieces 1 large carrot, chopped medium 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 pound dried lentils, rinsed 1/3 cup tomato paste 1 (15-ounce) can red kidney beans, drained and rinsed 1 (15-ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes 1/3 cup chili powder 4 teaspoons ground cumin 1/4 teaspoon crushed red-pepper flakes (to taste) 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper In a large soup pot, heat olive oil over medium heat.

Add onion, green and red peppers, carrot, jalapeno pepper, and garlic. Cook until the vegetables become softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in 6 cups water, lentils, tomato paste, kidney beans, and pinto beans. Stir to blend, adding crushed tomatoes, chili powder, cumin, and crushed red-pepper flakes.

Heat the canola oil over medium heat in a large, heavy soup pot.

Add the onion. Cook, stirring, until tender, about five minutes.

Add the garlic, cumin and tomato paste. Cook, stirring, until the mixture is fragrant, 30 seconds to a minute. Stir in the lentils and water, add salt to taste (1 to 2 teaspoons) and bring to a boil.

Reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer until the lentils are very tender, about 50 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning. Using a hand blender, coarsely purĂŠe the soup, or purĂŠe half the soup in batches in a blender. (Make sure to remove the stopper from the blender lid and hold a towel tightly down over the top to avoid hot splashes.) Stir the blended soup back into the pot, and combine well. Add the chipotles, and heat through. Taste and adjust seasonings.

Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover and simmer until lentils are tender, about 45 minutes. If the chili starts to get dry, add hot water as needed. Add more spices and salt and pepper if needed to taste. www.livingwellmagazine.net

Harvest More This Year By Eric Aber

It’s going to be spring soon; thoughts of seed catalogs, gardening fences, and tender produce grown from the soil right outside the door come to mind. It is inspiring to think of an empty garden plot as a blank canvas waiting for a creative & motivated, planter to come along and bring forth its potential to give life and nurture.

At this time of year it feels as if anything is possible. All of the weeds from the previous season are gone. The uninvited four legged guests who often sample the gardens bounty before it can be harvested are all tucked in for a cold winter season. The hot and humid, exhausting summer days are still off in the distance. All the makings for a fresh start are laid out, ready to be cultivated in the direction chosen by the gardeners’ hands and mind.

Can this same philosophy be put into practice in other aspects of life? Of course! The beginning of the year is a great time to “replant” lifestyle and cooking choices. This is when the freedom to create and execute a new plan of cooking and eating. The upcoming seasons will inevitably provide the fresh ingredients needed to create culinary delights. It is now that the preparation can occur to insure these exciting, colorful and nutritious offerings can be used to quickly and easily create enticing meals.

The cold winter nights and early spring frosts provide ample time to find recipes, cooking techniques, and inspired uses for the blitz of fresh choices that will become available soon. So many of the best treasures of spring and summer are only around for a short period of time and a little pre-planning will allow full advantage to be take of items such as tender asparagus, sweet apricots and fresh picked strawberries.

Roasted Spring Asparagus with Strawberry Vinaigrette Fresh Asparagus

2 lbs

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

½ cup + 2Tbs

Honey

1 Tbs

Fresh Strawberries

1 cup

Red Wine Vinegar Fresh Chives, Parsley, or Chervil, minced Dry mustard powder

3 Tbs

Salt & Pepper

To Taste

2 Tbs 1 tsp

Preheat an oven to 450 degrees.

Trim the bottoms of the asparagus to remove any fibrous skin.

Toss and rub the trimmed spears in the 2 Tbs of olive oil to coat lightly. Season with salt and pepper.

Place the remaining ingredients into a blender and puree until smooth. (A hand blender may also be used.)

Spread the seasoned asparagus in a single layer on a baking sheet. Cook in 450 degree oven for 6-8 minutes or until lightly browned and just cooked through.

Remove the asparagus from the baking sheet to prevent over cooking!

Let the asparagus cool slightly before drizzling with the strawberry dressing or chill completely and serve as crudités with the dressing as a dip.

While there may not be fresh produce popping forth from the ground this time of year, it is a great time to cultivate a kitchen and sow the seeds of a healthy productive space. It is the perfect opportunity to go through and weed out all of the old, never used, less healthy, and obsolete pantry items that can rob space and create clutter and confusion in the cooking area. This is also the time to go foraging for the essential ingredients that are needed to stock a healthy more nutrient dense kitchen. These ingredients such as high quality cold pressed oils, natural vinegars, non refined sweeteners, and fresh vibrant spices will give a foundation for creating inspired dishes that will be pleasing to the mind and body.

With a little planning ahead, a year of great meals, which utilize local seasonal ingredients, is easily obtainable.
