words from the editors and publishers:
Several of you contacted us last month complaining that after going through LWM at least 100 times trying to find Valentino, you still couldn’t find him. You weren’t alone, as reported by several frustrated readers desperately seeking Valentino. Because we goofed last month and hid Valentino, so well that no one could find him. There is a good reason for that, and that is you couldn’t see him. The only way anyone could have found Valentino would have been if you knew exactly where to find him, along with an extremely strong magnifying glass. His hiding place worked perfectly when looking at our computer screens, unfortunately his image did not translate properly in print. We are very sorry and want to make it up to all of our Valentino followers, so we will be drawing 20 winners this month rather than the usual 3. Therefore, read the rest of this really quickly and start looking for Valentino! You could be a winner. Check out page ten in this issue to find out where Valentino was poorly placed last month. In this issue, we continue our quest to find new health benefits associated with beer drinking, in moderation of course. Because what can we say, there is nothing like enjoying an ice cold beer! Therefore, why not find some good in your beer drinking, since the only thing we ever hear about beer is getting a Beer Belly or gaining enormous amounts of weight. Still, drinking a couple of beers a day could actually be a good thing. Surprisingly, there is good to be found amongst those amber bubbles besides good taste. In recipes, don’t miss an absolutely scrumptious chocolate cake from a newly released cookbook, Big Flavors from a Small Kitchen by Chris Honor & Laura Washburn Hutton, and in keeping with our beer issue, one of the main ingredients, is a generous amount of Guinness beer and other fantastic recipes minus the beer. Don’t listen to any of what I just stated above if you have been strongly advised not to drink beer by a medical professional…or family member. Inside this issue of LWM: The Shop by Design shares some new fashion trends for spring, an article about eating that huge seed inside the avocado, FYI talks sweeteners (good and bad), technology interfering with love, being your own advocate or appointing someone to be your advocate during a hospital stay, looking at 3D printers, preventions and treatments for a cold or the flu, how even healthy foods can be bad, relief from headaches with Acupuncture and more! Don’t it thru Winter relatively easy, but Advertising Inquiries: Forget about Earth Hour March 19th! Looks like we madedon’t blame us if we get a monster storm! To those of you who Brian Strauss - Publisher pertake in Easter celebrations, sales@livingwellmagazine.net have a very happy day!

FYI
SWEETENERS: THE GOOD AND THE BAD
Agave Syrup was originally used to make tequila. When Agave Syrup ferments, it literally turns into tequila. The enzymatic activity therefore must be stopped so that the syrup will not turn into tequila in your cupboard. There are three major producers of agave syrup. Some of these companies also have other divisions that make Tequila. For the most part, agave syrup is produced in the Guadalajara region in Mexico. Agave “nectar” is not made from the sap of the yucca or agave plant but from the starch of the giant pineapple-like, root bulb. The principal constituent of the agave root is starch, similar to the starch in corn or rice, and a complex carbohydrate called inulin, which is made up of chains of fructose molecules. Technically a highly indigestible fiber, inulin, which does not taste sweet, comprises about half of the carbohydrate content of agave. The process in which agave glucose and inulin are converted into “nectar” is similar to the process by which corn starch is converted into High Fructose Corn Syrup The agave starch is subject to an enzymatic and chemical process that converts the starch into a fructoserich syrup—anywhere from 70% fructose and higher according to the agave nectar chemical profiles posted on agave nectar websites. High Fructose Corn Syrup is 55%.

Stevia a natural, no-calorie sweetener, made from a South American plant, has been around for centuries. Highly purified stevia extracts, which are what you find on the market, are generally recognized as safe. Some people find that stevia can have a metallic aftertaste. Whole-leaf stevia or crude stevia extracts aren’t FDA-approved.
Maple Syrup: If it is not organic, it may also contain formaldehyde and other toxic chemicals. Sucralose (Splenda) It’s 600 times sweeter than sugar. The FDA says it reviewed more than 100 safety studies before approving sucralose as a generalpurpose sweetener for foods. Because it’s heat-stable, you can use it for baking Raw honey: is one and a half times sweeter than sugar; It also raises blood sugar almost as much as table sugar.
Aspartame (NutraSweet and Equal). It’s a combo of two amino acids that provide sweetness with almost no calories. Considered safe unless you drink 19 cans of diet soda a day Molasses is made by refining sugarcane and sugar beets. During processing, sugar crystals are extracted leaving a dark, syrupy mixture. If the molasses is from sugarcane grown in high quality soil, it can have an abundance of minerals like iron, calcium, and magnesium. Blackstrap Molasses is the darkest color molasses you can get, and this indicates the presence of less sugar, and more nutrients.

Saccharin (Sweet and Low) as been around since the late 1800s, when a researcher spilled the chemical compound on his hand and realized it tasted sweet. It’s between 300 and 500 times sweeter than table sugar. In the 70’s after lab tests linked it to bladder cancer in rats. Since then with more than 30 studies found the test were not relevant to humans and it is safe for human consumption.
Dangers of Lead by the Numbers
As the sordid details of the worst American water crisis of this century in Flint, Michigan begins to unfold revealing that the local government knew the water was tainted yet telling the residents it was safe. Even a local General Motors factory refused to wash its engine parts with the corrosive water. The state even went as far as importing bottled water for state employees that knew the truth.
H
umans have known about the dangers of lead for millennia, yet this heavy metal continues to plague us. In fact, what’s happening right now in Flint, Michigan, is just the latest example of humanity’s toxic relationship with lead.
To make sure you can do all the things on your bucket list, put this at the top:
Schedule a colonoscopy
Year Romans began piping their water through lead conduits: 312 B.C. Year Greek physician and poet Nikander of Colophon first described lead’s damaging health effects: 200 B.C. Year the United States banned lead-based paints for use in housing: 1978 Number of Flint children recently exposed to lead-contaminated drinking water: 12,000 Minimum number of years it takes lead to fully leave the body: 10 Estimated maximum cost to replace residential lead pipes in Flint: $1,500,000,000 Cost per day for anticorrosive additives that could have averted the Flint water crisis: $100 Average monthly water bill per household in Flint: $140 Average monthly water bill for the rest of United States: $45 Average blood lead level in 1988: (after leaded gasoline was banned): 2.8 Highest blood lead level recorded in Flint during the water crisis: 38 Action level for lead in water in parts per billion (ppb), per the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency: 15 Amount of lead in water the EPA deems safe: 0 Highest lead ppb level found in Flint water: 158

BE YOUR OWN BEST ADVOCATE FOR A MORE MANAGEABLE RECOVERY By Jay Neidich
According to the Center for Healthcare Quality & Payment Reform, research studies and quality-reporting initiatives around the country show that 15 to 25 percent of people who are discharged from the hospital will be readmitted within 30 days or less.1 Known as “the revolving door of rehospitalization,” having to go back to the hospital soon after an acute stay for a joint replacement, medical procedure or illness can put a serious damper on your recovery, while adding costs and stress. Studies also show that many 30-day rehospitalizations can be avoided. The way to do so is to begin thinking about recovery even before hospital discharge. Although each medical journey is an individualized process with many variables, there are steps both before and after discharge that can ensure your rehabilitation is as successful as possible.
Don’t hesitate to ask questions in the hospital. One of the best ways to minimize the chance of re-hospitalization is to get all of your questions answered by your physician, during your hospital stay. Because it can be difficult to get back in touch with your physician as needed upon returning home, it’s crucial to get as many questions answered while still in the hospital. If needed, a hospital social worker can assist in this process.
Questions to ask of your practitioner can include: Why was each medication prescribed?, or How do I use and/or care for a particular piece of medical equipment, such as a wheelchair? 1 “Reducing Hospital Readmissions”. Center for Healthcare Quality & Payment Reform. http://www.chqpr.org/readmissions.html

Be sure to understand why an item is necessary for recovery and how often you need to use it. If you are unable to advocate for yourself, see if a family member or close friend can advocate for you, asking the important questions prior to discharge.
Prepare your home environment ahead of time Whether your preparation for home begins in the hospital or in an outpatient facility, before heading back, make the necessary plans to return to a safe and accommodating environment with a family member or hired caregivers to help. Most imperative is assistance with current medical needs, such as a hospital bed on your home’s first floor, equipment like a feeding pump, and other supplies that should be in place prior to your arrival home. One assumption many patients using home healthcare make is that medical professionals will adapt your homes for you. While most will certainly make recommendations, ideally any key home improvements must be in place ahead of time as well. At the initial session, a home health nurse or physical therapist should go over a safety checklist to cover any issues that still need improvement. These might include installing better lighting, discarding hazardous throw rugs, installing a grab handle and no-slip mat in the shower or bathtub, and moving glassware and other kitchen essentials to a lower shelf. Because these professionals are well versed in the process of making homes safer and more accessible, they will likely think of additional steps to make sure your home is in the optimal state for rehabilitation. Keep an open mind and try to be as receptive as possible – remember their primary responsibility is to serve you and improve www.livingwellmagazine.net

your quality of life. If your vision is impaired, for example, added lighting is an obvious improvement, but a professional can typically suggest additional, more discreet solutions like applying a color strip to your stairs in order to maximize wayfinding. This can be especially helpful to those living in the same home for many years, as it may be especially difficult to see beyond the current layout to imagine all of the possibilities for improving quality of life.
Be proactive in order to return to important activities. If your physician determines that it’s possible to return to activities that are important to you, take the necessary steps ahead of time to return to them following your hospital discharge. A common point of contention between seniors and their family members is the struggle over returning to driving, especially because the reason for your hospitalization likely impaired you – whether temporarily or permanently - in some areas. AAA offers driver improvement courses to help senior drivers understand how to adjust to slower reflexes, weaker vision and other changes. These courses are offered both online and in classrooms throughout the country. http://seniordriving.aaa.
com/maintain-mobility-independence/ driver-improvement-courses-seniors
Physically, if you are anxious to return to certain sports and activities like golf or walking and you’ve checked with your physician, it may be worthwhile to schedule an appointment with a personal trainer before your discharge. A physical therapist you might work with in your home will rehabilitate you in many ways relating to your specific injury or surgery, but depending on your circumstances, — continued on next page
adding a layer of strength and agility training vis-à-vis a personal trainer could be very beneficial. Even if you have no desire to return to or take up a sport, a personal trainer can improve your baseline endurance for any type of physical activity, including activities of daily living, like walking and doing stairs. If there are two flights of stairs in your house, for example, a personal trainer can help you work toward safely ascending and descending them.
— continued from previous page —
Maintain honesty and an open line of communication with those assisting you. Begin this habit in the hospital and chances are you’ll feel more comfortable throughout rehabilitation. Be honest with your caregiver in particular. When your caregiver, physician, nurse or physical therapist asks you about your pain, give an honest number on the pain scale from 0-10 so that they can properly assess and attend to your discomfort and needs. Now isn’t the time to be humble and hold back; only you can know your own pain and it’s crucial that you advocate for yourself and speak up.
Take advantage of your time in the hospital and its many medical professionals readily available to demonstrate with you and your caregiver how to properly use an apparatus you might have to rely on at home, such as a Hoyer Lift, which puts you in a sling and helps to transfer you from your bed to a chair. If you feel your caregiver is being rough with this transfer or any other transfers and assists, speak up and let them know. Overall, remember that the rehabilitation process is a three-way partnership between you, your caregiver and your physician. When you can all share in the common goal of easing your pain and transitioning back to your activities of daily living, the risk of rehospitalization will decline and you will remain at home indefinitely – exactly where you belong!

Printers Are There Health And Environmental Risks? As with most inventions, the thrill of the new has led to mass excitement surrounding 3D printing. The booming industry is expected to grow from nothing just a few years ago to some $4 billion by 2025. But some worry that our enthusiasm for 3D printing may be overshadowing some troubling health and environmental issues associated with the new technology.
Besides the health effects, 3D printing can also be problematic for the environment. For starters, the plastic in 3D print material deteriorates significantly with each use, rendering recycling out of the question at this point. Another environmental hazard of 3D printing is the clear spike in electrical energy needed for the heating process. Using heat or lasers to melt plastic costs
3D printers heat plastic (usually a solid thermoplastic filament such as ABS or PLA) into a liquid and force it through a heated extrusion nozzle which in turn deposits it in thin layers onto a moving bed to form figures in predetermined shapes. But this process can send potentially harmful ultrafine particles (UFPs) and toxic fumes composed of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air surrounding the machinery where users can breathe them in. In industrial settings, proper ventilation systems would be required and workers would have to wear protective gear to minimize exposure to similar UFP and VOC levels—but nowadays anyone can buy or borrow a desktop 3D printer and use it at home or in school without taking any extra precautions. One study, as reported on Phys.org, equated the effects of printing a small 3D item to smoking a cigarette indoors. Effects can include nausea and headaches, particularly for those with pre-existing heart or respiratory problems.
drastically more than traditional methods. When compared to injection molding, a 3D printer consumes almost 100 times the amount of energy on average to make an equivalent item.
A fully enclosed 3D printing system could mitigate exposure issues, but the major 3D printer manufacturers have yet to license the valuable patent held by one company to make this technology widely available. Until then, it’s up to users to make sure to operate desktop 3D printers in a well-ventilated area. Also, PLA, which is made from organic material such as corn starch or sugar cane, seems to be a safer choice than petroleum-based ABS as far as fumes are concerned. 12
On the plus side, 3D printing is an “additive” technology, meaning it only uses the exact amount of plastic source material needed, so little if any is wasted. Also, 3D printed objects tend to be much lighter than their traditional counterparts; this saves money, fuel, and carbon emissions when it comes to shipping. But critics maintain that the weight savings isn’t enough to counteract the energy intensity of the 3D printing process. Whether we like it or not, 3D printing is here to stay, but only time will tell if the growing industry behind the phenomenon will be able to clean up its act as it enters mainstream. Why is the Arctic such a crucial area to focus on in efforts to stem global warming? The image of a polar bear standing on a shrinking iceberg has become one of the most iconic symbols of global warming, yet few of us realize just how important the Arctic’s ice is, wherever we may live on the earth. Researchers consider the Arctic to be an “indicator region” for the rest of the planet, given that even small differences in temperature there can have profound ecosystem impacts and can give us a better idea of the types of problems we can all expect down the road. Of course, the effects of global warming have been under scrutiny in the Arctic for decades already. Since 1979, the extent of the Arctic’s permanent ice cap has shrunk by upwards of 20 percent. Even worse, the remaining ice has thinned by as much as twothirds in some parts of the Arctic. Recent models suggest this ice loss will only accelerate in the next several years due to a global warming feedback loop called the “albedo effect,” whereby less ice means less reflection of the sun’s radiation back into space and thus more warming at the Earth’s surface. And not only is the ice shrinking, parts of the ice cap are also rupturing: The Ward Hunt Ice Shelf, the largest block of ice in the Arctic and intact for some 3,000 years, finally cracked in 2000, and within two years split all the way through. These changes up north are already starting to have ripple effects elsewhere. For starters, the entire Arctic ecosystem is being forced to shift with the changing climate. Animals like polar bears, whales and seals are changing migration patterns, in turn impacting native people who depend on them for sustenance. Meanwhile, other organisms are overpopulating, given all the
new habitat opening up. Rising temperatures have allowed the spruce bark beetle to add an extra reproduction cycle each year. As a result the pesky little beetles decimated 3.4 million acres of Alaska’s forests over just 10 years. And then there’s the issue of sea level rise. Thanks in large part to melting Arctic glaciers, sea level is expected to rise some three feet on average around the world in the next century, flooding over 22,000 square miles in the United States alone. This pressing issue threatens island nations especially. Countries like the Maldives, precariously perched just six feet above sea level, are as concerned as anyone about melting glaciers in the Arctic. And warming in the Arctic also affects weather patterns vital for food production all over the world. Cold water from the melting ice could also potentially halt the Gulf Stream, which brings warm weather to Europe. This would result in a steep drop in temperature for much of northwestern Europe and would affect weather patterns far beyond. While it may seem futile for us to try to stop Arctic ice melting, we do in fact have the power. We can all work to reduce our carbon footprints by flying and driving less, turning down (or off) the heat or air conditioning, speaking up to our elected officials, and even divesting from companies that support the continued development of fossil fuels. YOU CAN EAT AN AVOCADO SEED
but...Why the Seed? Avocados are an excellent food, very complete, 70% of the amino acids that this fruit is found in its seed. Avocados contain more soluble fiber than any other food.
• Helps reduce tumor growth thanks to its flavonol content. • Can help to prevent epilepsy. • Assist in regulating thyroid disorders.
first: Dry avocado pits on the window sill. This will take several
days.
• It has a rejuvenating effect on the skin, eaten as well as applied, because it boosts collagen formation. • It is a good supplement for naturally treating asthma.
HEALTH BENEFITS Below are some medicinal properties the avocado seed is believed to provide: • Antioxidant: to help prevent cell aging. • Helps prevent cardiovascular diseases thanks to the amino acid content that is good for excess cholesterol and triglycerides treatment and as coronary disease prevention. • Helps raise defenses and fight diseases caused by microbes, fungus, and parasites. • Slimming and fat burning: avocado seeds contain fat burners within the fruit’s pulp. It also contains soluble fiber, which improves the intestinal tract and makes you feel satisfied. • Good for treating diarrhea and gastrointestinal tract inflammation.
Some other uses for Avocado Pits Natural dye: Use both the skins and the pit to create a natural pink-hued dye for fabric. Keep your guacamole from going brown by putting an avocado pit in the dip. (Some people swear it works) Dry the pits, grind them up, and put them in a homemade facemask as an exfoliant. Eat it. You can grind up avocado pits in a smoothie. It contains several nutrients including calcium, magnesium and potassium. Make avocado pit tea.
• Aphrodisiac properties for increasing libido. • Revitalizing for fatigue and stress. • Joint and muscle pain relaxer when used topically. 14

Dealing With The Seed
*SMOOTHIE RECIPE WITH SEED
Avocado seeds have a bitter and astringent flavor because of their medicinal properties. In order to consume it, remove the fine layer of brown skin, grate it, and, as an option, brown it on low heat. You will see that it takes on a reddish color.
Load the blender in this order: 4 Ounces of Water Handful of Spinach
To smash avocado pits before you grind them, put them in a heavy-duty plastic bag and smash them with a mallet or hammer. Putting a heavy towel over the bag will help prevent the bag from tearing. The avocado pit pieces can then be ground up in a heavy-duty blender or food processor. This should result in a fine powder.
Handful of Kale Handful of Swiss Chard 1 Peeled Banana I Inch Whole Slice of Pineapple no skin 1 Green Apple Cut in Quarters
Mixing them in smoothies is one of the most popular ways to eat avocado pits.
1 Avocado Pit “The Big Seed” or start with a 1/2
For topical use of the seeds, do the following:
5 Pitted Dates If you want to sweeten things up
Crush them and mix with alcohol and let the mixture soak for at least a week. Use this alcohol for massages and rubs, in the case of joint and muscle pains for example. In the case of migraines, massage your temples and neck gently.
2 Cups of Ice and in after 20 seconds of power blending
FIY: Avocado seeds can cause constipation due to its tannin content.
Don’t be afraid to experiment:
1 Slice of Lemon or Lime with skin Blend for 1 minute on High, add a dash of cinnamon to help slow down the insulin response of the fruit sugars. Try adding strawberries, blueberries, oranges, raw Coconut (or any other fresh fruit or veggies you have on hand)
Ground avocado seeds mixed with cheese and flour are used as a mouse poison. However, we would recommend a “Have A Heart Trap!”
Blend for approximately one minute until smooth *WARNING: MAKE SURE YOUR BLENDER CAN HANDLE THE SEED!

ON THE LABEL We have always been conditioned to believe that beer automatically falls in the “not so healthy” category and that it’s not so positive attribute is a “beer belly”. Actually that can be true if you drink too much of it. Therefore, beer labels are probably the least read label on the planet. No one really wants to know the actual calorie or alcohol contents. At the moment, you choose to sit down and enjoy an ice cold beer the last thing you would willingly do is read the label and relinquish your beer...for any reason. Therefore we decided to read some beer labels for you. Much to our surprise the news is not all bad, there are actually some good ingredients in beer when you drink it in moderation.

FINDING THE GOOD IN BEER A report in the American Chemical Society’s Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, Jianguo Fang and colleagues said that Xn was shown not only to fight free radicals but also jump start signaling and protect cells from neurotoxicity.
Since ancient times, people have attributed a variety of health benefits to moderate consumption of fermented beverages such as wine and beer. Several epidemiological studies have suggested that moderate consumption of alcohol reduces overall mortality, mainly from coronary diseases. However, there are discrepancies regarding the specific effects of different types of beverages (wine, beer and spirits) on the cardiovascular system and cancer, and also whether the possible protective effects of alcoholic beverages are due to their alcoholic content (ethanol) or to their nonalcoholic components (mainly polyphenols). Epidemiological and clinical studies have pointed out that regular and moderate wine consumption (one to two glasses a day) is associated with decreased incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD), hypertension, diabetes, and certain types of cancer, including colon, basal cell, ovarian, and prostate carcinoma. Moderate beer consumption has also been associated with these effects, but to a lesser degree, probably because of beer’s lower phenolic content. These health benefits have mainly been attributed to an increase in antioxidant capacity, changes in lipid profiles, and the anti-inflammatory effects produced by these alcoholic beverages.
Five scientists ( Juan Yao, Baoxin Zhang, Chunpo Ge, Shoujiao Peng, and Jianguo Feng) isolated the compound and tested its effects on cells from rats. They observed a “previously unrecognized mechanism underlying the biological action of Xn,” which suggests that Xanthohumol “might be a potential candidate for the prevention of neurodegenerative disorders.”
Xanthohumol a polyphenol chalcone from hops (Humulus lupulus), has received increasing attention due to its multiple pharmacological activities. As an active component in beers, its presence has been suggested to be linked to the epidemiological observation of the beneficial effect of regular beer drinking. Neuronal cells — which are in the brain, spine and nerves — are in limited supply over one's lifetime and especially susceptible to stress. This stress is thought to be one of the ways brainrelated disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's begin.
Don’t start drinking beer without talking to your physician first. However, for those of you who already enjoy drinking beer— you could be repairing some brain cells at the same time.
To get the benefits of Xn, all it takes is a daily intake of products containing Xn, such as beer.
Cheers! www.livingwellmagazine.net

Powerful Cold, Flu Treatment and Prevention Secrets By Dr. Scott E. Rosenthal You’ve heard it before… chicken soup, vitamin C, and many other common remedies will help combat colds and flu. This article is not about reciting your grandma’s advice (though it is likely spot on), but reveals littleknown, yet effective, remedies that prevent or lesson the punch of those annoying upper respiratory tract infections. You’ve heard it before… chicken soup, vitamin C, and many other common remedies will help combat colds and flu. This article is not about reciting your grandma’s advice (though it is likely spot on), but reveals little-known, yet effective, remedies that prevent or lesson the punch of those annoying upper respiratory tract infections. Kiwi According to research published in the British Journal of Nutrition, daily consumption of the equivalent of four gold kiwifruits was associated with a significant reduction in the duration of sore throat, and the duration and severity of head congestions in adults. The strength of this small powerhouse fruit is in its ability to reduce the severity and duration of illness. Kiwi benefits children as well. The Journal of Food and Drug Analysis contains research that found “regular consumption of gold kiwifruit by pre-school children (2-5 years) resulted in an overall reduction in the incidence of cold and influenza-like illnesses as well as a reduction in their symptoms.” Green and gold kiwis are similar, but the gold variety has a bit more sugar. I personally grab whichever I can get my hands on and preferably buy organic. Both are higher in nutrients per ounce than most household staples, including bananas, apples and oranges. If you are not ready to start your morning with a bowl of kiwi, consider chowing down on some at the first signs of being sick or when you feel run-down. Best of all, this natural “medicine” is free of side-effects (unless you have an allergy) and tastes great! Gargling The American Journal of Preventive Medicine found a 36 percent decrease in the incidence of common colds from gargling a pinch of salt dissolved in warm tap water. It only takes about a minuteand-a-half daily and costs next to nothing. Not only is gargling preventative, but it can soothe throat soreness. 18
Another study, published in the Journal of Epidemiology regarding green tea, revealed that “gargling might prevent viral upper respiratory tract infections” and “gargling once or more a day was associated with lower onset of both febrile [having or showing the symptoms of a fever] diseases during the daytime in children aged 2 to 6 years and sickness absences in children aged 4 to 6.” It is thought that the ingredient in the tea called catechin (a type of flavonoid in green tea that has antiviral and bactericidal effects) was responsible for the health promoting results. Green tea is shown to be more effective and edged out a solution of salt water. Your choice may be made based on taste, convenience and cost. I personally like to swallow the green tea in order to reach deeper in the throat. I do not recommend this for children due to the caffeine content. Nasal Irrigation Besides the many benefits of stretching found in hatha yoga, this ancient science recommends nasal irrigation with a small device called a neti pot. It looks like a tiny genie bottle with a spout which is sized to fit comfortably into one nostril. Warm water is added with a small amount of salt. The solution flows into one nostril while it passes through and comes out the other side. This practice flushes away impurities, mucous and germs from the nasal cavities. It can play a preventative role and can be particularly helpful with opening up a stuffy nose once sick. Nasal irrigation can also be performed using various squeeze bottle contraptions available in most drug stores. It is important to clean the device properly in order to prevent reinfection. By the way, barring a defect of the septum, the water does actually come out the other side! ZZZZs If your grandmother mentioned this one, heed her advice! If not, read on and send her a copy of this article.

Being sleep deprived and run-down does not only make you feel groggy, it also gives you a greater chance of becoming ill. Sleeping less than six hours each night can quadruple your chances of coming down with a cold. It is optimum to sleep between six to eight hours depending on your personal make-up. If you are starting to feel run-down, consider going to bed 30 minutes earlier for a few nights in order to pay back the energy bank. Keep Your Hands Off Hand washing gets much press when it comes to cold and flu prevention, but your hands play another role that can make you sick. Research shows that the average person touches his or her face around 18 times per hour (that little scratch of the nose, rub of the mouth or wipe of the eye). This would be fine if your hands were sterile, but they may have just touched a restaurant table, performed a handshake or gripped a door handle at the mall. Have an itch? Next time you need to scratch , try using your forearm or putting a finger up your shirt sleeve in order to prevent its surface from touching you face.
sinus health, feel stronger, and get sick less often when receiving periodic chiropractic adjustments. This is likely due to the relationship of the spinal column, the nervous system it houses, and the neurological interaction with the immune system. Suffering from colds or the flu from time to time may simply be part of being human, but with the right strategies, the duration and severity can be lessened. The illness may even be prevented in the first place. Remember, if you start to notice a little sniffle, pop a few kiwis and call me in the morning.
Many other factors greatly influence your immune function and ability to ward off bacterial and viral infections. For example, it is important to have your vitamin D levels checked regularly and supplemented when needed. Too much sugar and/or processed junk food and not enough fresh vegetables and fruits can play a significant role. Inadequate exercise hinders your abilities, as does stress. Brigid Schulte: “Why Time is a Feminist Issue” Summary by Karen Jessee
rigid Schulte is an award-winning B journalist for the Washington Post and Washington Post magazine. She was part of a team that won the Pulitzer Prize. She is also a fellow at the New America Foundation. She lives in Alexandria, Virginia with her husband and two children.
Time: our greatest commodity. More valuable than riches these days; we never seem to have enough. In this Women’s History Month, what we know is that while we’ve come a long way, baby, some things have yet to change. Women’s work is one of them. Brigid Shulte, is the author of Overwhelmed: Work, Love and Play When No One Has the Time. She should know: in a March 2015 on-line article for dailylife.com she relates the story of hiring a “time expert” who claimed, after a phone interview, that Brigid actually had 30 hours of leisure time every week. She was incredulous. This to a woman who was an author, married and who had two children. This to a woman who also had a demanding job where the rule was that the best workers were in the office until 9 and 10 at night. This to a woman who kept reminding herself that she really did love her husband though she worked, did the laundry, the grocery shopping, the cooking, the dry cleaning, the bills, the pediatrician appointment, the child care drop offs, and all the rest. She kept the smoldering resentment at bay. This time expert, who had demanded Brigid employ a time study, went through her time diaries and spewed forth ridiculous bits and scraps of free moments. He counted a few minutes here and there, like hanging by the bed in the morning contemplating the walk to the bathroom, waiting to pick up the kids, waiting for a tow truck. These moments of waiting were labeled “leisure.” 20
Brigid labels them as “time confetti.” She claims this is what time is like for most women: fragmented time filled with interruptions of housework and childcare and keeping the husband happy. Women’s quiet moments are filled with thoughts of children’s needs, groceries, dinner, the carpool, meetings, medical checkups, laundry, and housecleaning. Free time for women is best described as “contaminated.” “I came to learn that women have never had a history or culture of leisure. From the dawn of humanity, high-status men, removed from the drudge work of life, have enjoyed long, uninterrupted hours of leisure. And in that time, they created art, philosophy, literature, and made scientific discoveries.” International studies revealed that women in cultures from around the world believed they didn’t deserve leisure time, as though it were not a virtue and therefore belied a creed of selfishness; that one had to earn such time by finishing that never-ending “to do” list by the end of the day. Spare time came with guilt. When Brigid finally put a halt to the madness and grabbed her husband so they could take long walks and create new strategies, they both came to the conclusion that they had not had the role models in which to approach this time in women’s history when women were expected to do it all. When they had children, they suddenly looked back to those old black and white television

Those old movies are still in play for many couples who wonder how to do it differently. “Women are still doing twice and three times the housework and child care, in many instances, even when they work full time.”
Thursday, March 10th 4:00-6:00 PM
The solution: divide and conquer. Schulte claims that “without really tackling all this invisible work, economies don’t grow and the next generation of society isn’t raised.” And if you share it, then women have some leisure time too…to write, to paint, to create, to read, to lead.
Your First Step to Beautiful Legs!
In September of 2010, I wrote an article called “What They Taught Their Boys.” It was the story of Linda and Steve who taught their two boys how to socialize, how to be respectful, how to treat others, how to be organized, how to clean their rooms, how to pick up after themselves.

They grew into men who knew how to do it all. Today they are husbands who know how to do it all. Those song lyrics about “teach your children well” are not a cliché. We can look back on those old black and white movies with our typical nostalgia and claim “good old days”, but they’re not coming back any time soon. Men and women have changed, society is different, and we move at a frenetic pace. There is no “women’s work” anymore; there’s just work. Share. Give the gift of time.

Chaotic Moon’s Tech Tats explores the use of skin-mounted components and conductive paint to create circuitry that lives on the human body in the form of a tattoo that has the capability to collect, store, send and receive data. The mere thought of such an innovation, as a technical tattoo seems more like something directly from an episode of Star Trek with Bones, (Doctor McCoy) trying to diagnose and determine Jim’s, (Captain Kirk’s) fate. Tech Tats are what have been referred to as bio-wearables: wearable technology that isn’t www.chaoticmoon.com just, something users would wear on their wrist or concealed within an armband, but rather interacts with their wrist, and in this case a tattoo. The objective behind Tech Tats is to eliminate chunky, expensive devices with a completely hassle free alternative, using the user’s skin as the interface. This is technology that actually becomes a part of the user for complete integration. On the tattoo, a microcontroller stores and receives data from temperature sensors via electro-conductive paint. There’s also an area for an ambient light sensor that illuminates LEDs when it’s dark. Quite different from a now traditional fitness tracker, you will be able to mount it on other places on your body and not just on your wrist.
The Stone by Pebblebee Their success started with the very generous support of over 3080 Kickstarter backers, they were able to raise over $218K to make the Pebblebee a reality to create a versatile, affordable Bluetooth tracker and sensor. The Stone is the smart button that can be placed in your pocket, your purse, or attach it to your key ring to help you control your phone, your apps, and just about everything else in your life, like turning on lights, adjusting the temperature in your home, and controlling your television without moving from your chair. A great feature for anyone traveling alone is the ability to use the Stone as an emergency beacon that will notifying your emergency contacts with a brief message and your current location. pebblebee.com

Most therapists would agree that in their work with couples, the conflicts they experience are generally due to one (or more) of the big three : sex, children, or money. Over the past 12 years or so in my work with couples, more often than not, I have also found this to be true. Couples who had an otherwise healthy relationship, were seeking therapy because they were dissatisfied with the frequency of sexual intimacy, and/or weren’t finding pleasure in their “efforts” to engage with each other sexually. After a period of time, I noticed a pattern: they all had a television in their bedrooms. After noting this, I began to look at research studies which also found this to be true. Both in my work, and in the research studies, couples who had a television in their bedroom were more likely to report less frequent sexual activity, and/or less satisfying sexual activity. I often found myself proclaiming that if I could remove the televisions from every couple’s bedrooms 26
in the United States, I would! That has not changed—in fact, the problem has gotten worse. With the rapid advancement of technology, we now have a fourth major source of conflict, which has quickly and steadily climbed the ranks: electronic devices. The use of smartphones, tablets, laptops, iPads, Kindles, etc., are quickly becoming a very serious problem in couple’s relationships, both inside and outside of the bedroom. Researchers Brandon McDaniel and Sarah Coyne coined a term for this problem: Technoference.
What is Technoference? As defined by McDaniel & Coyne in their 2014 research study, technoference is “everyday intrusions or interruptions in couple interactions or time spent together that occur due to technology.” Their study at Brigham Young University in 2014 included 143

Their research study found that, “by allowing technology to interfere with or interrupt conversations, activities, and time with romantic partners—even when unintentional or for brief moments—individuals may be sending implicit messages about what they value most, leading to conflict and negative outcomes in personal life and relationships.” In addition, they found that the participants who reported more technoference in their relationship, also reported “more depressive symptoms and lower life satisfaction.” I didn’t have a word for it then, but several years ago I was working with a couple who were definitely suffering from technoference in their sex life. They were a heterosexual couple in their mid20s, who had been living together for approximately three years. When I explored the issues and concerns that the woman had about their sex life, she stated, “I have actually stood there naked, while he’s on the computer playing his game, and not only does he not care that I’m completely naked, he won’t stop playing the game, because he’s in the middle of a Quest and couldn’t stop because he’d let the rest of his group down.” Her partner defended his position stating something to the effect of, “I couldn’t stop. I was the only one in the group who had the ability to heal and resurrect people and we were in the middle of a major battle.” I’m not frequently at a loss for words while working with clients, but this one definitely had me stunned for a moment. The seriousness and tone of his response indicated that he truly believed that the other online players in his group were actually going to die if he stopped playing to go be with his partner. To say that she felt rejected, unattractive, and depressed would be an understatement. [Not that it matters, but this was a very attractive, healthy, fit woman in her mid-20s]. Given what could only be described as an addiction to this online multiplayer game, the treatment for this couple was definitely an uphill battle…but eventually we got there.
Tech Check
The Road to Recovery If your relationship is suffering from technoference, you and your partner need to make an agreement to limit the use of wireless / electronic devices for specified periods of time. I typically suggest that couples go “radio silent” (i.e., cut off all communications to the outside world via devices) from 8pm to 10pm, every night, as well as during mealtimes and at bedtime. During these times, there may be no use of electronic devices. Ideally, this would include the television; however, in some cases couples report that watching television shows together is how they spend quality time together—particularly for couples who have physical contact (e.g., snuggling, cuddling, rubbing feet, etc.) while watching something together, and discussions about it afterwards. Once you and your partner have established agreed upon timeframes for technology-free quality time, you may be surprised at how much closer and connected you can become. That time can be spent enjoying a shared interest or hobby. Perhaps you might want to focus on more meaningful conversation. If you don’t know where to start, I suggest the Couples Ungame. The Couples Ungame is a very simple way to share opinions, feelings, and experiences, using a set of 140 cards, each with a question on it to be answered. It consists of two decks of cards; Deck #1 is best used “as an ice breaker; to get acquainted; or for fun and laughter.” Deck #2 is best used to: “share feelings, talk about values; and to relate experiences” (approx. $11 on amazon.com). When couples don’t have televisions or other electronic devices to focus on, they naturally turn their focus towards each other. In my work with couples, I’ve found that without the distractions of televisions, smart phones, tablets, computers, etc., they create space to entertain themselves with much more fun and engaging activities. Ultimately, spaces like their bedroom become a sanctuary for closeness and intimacy. And the only electronic devices allowed are “battery operated.”
If you’re not sure if technoference is affecting your relationship, examine your answers to the following questions: How often are you on wireless devices while you are with your partner? Is it absolutely necessary to use electronic devices that frequently? If it’s not, why are you spending that amount of time on your device? Has your partner expressed negative feelings with regard to the amount of time you spend on various devices? Has your partner expressed feeling ignored or rejected, due to the time spent on your device? If so, how do you imagine they might be feeling with your continued use, despite their clear communication of negative emotions?

Spring Song For winter's rains and ruins are over, And all the season of snow and sins; The days dividing lover and lover, The light that loses, the night that wins; And time remembered is grief forgotten, And frosts are slain and flowers begotten, And in green underwood and cover Blossom by blossom the spring begins.

Feel Even Better By Karen Verna Carlson 28

March 2016
Feeling spring translates as feeling better within my being. Feeling better does happen blossom by blossom with the first shy debut of snow drops followed by partying purple and yellow crocus with explosions of forsythia, daffodils and tulips. Feeling better does happen a few minutes day by day diminishing the power of darkness. Love and Trust overpower Fear and Doubt becoming the predominant mechanisms for my body to process energy through emotions. Love and Trust create positive emotions. Fear and Doubt engender all the negative ones.
Foster Love and Trust Feeling better means I’m opening more to Love and Trust. That automatically releases Fear and Doubt since no two things can occupy the exact same place at the exact same time. Darkness, cold, snow and ice foster Fear and Doubt within me even when I am not consciously thinking about it. Sunshine, warmth and flowers foster Love and Trust within me even when I am not consciously thinking about it. Take Advantage of the Momentum Feelings are pretty important. They are not an elective in the curriculum of the Earth school. To suppress them or deny them causes damage to the one suppressing or denying and also causes harm to people nearby. With good feelings being enhanced by spring, why not take advantage of this momentum to feel even better?
W hy Feelings Are Important Before describing how to build better feelings, some of us need a little more convincing as to the importance of feelings. Feelings may appear as annoying obstacles to the job of living effectively, but they are actually an indispensible communication system that contributes to more effective living. I remember playing blind man’s bluff as a child. Half dozen kids scattered around the yard after I was blindfolded. As I moved in the darkness one child who served as the caller used temperature words as clues helpful for me to locate and touch someone who would then take my place. “Getting warmer, warmer, almost hot” finally connected me with another.
In the outer landscape getting warmer heralds spring. My inner landscape warming indicates that I am experiencing positive emotions that connect me with my Inner Being, my Authentic Self, my Higher Power, my Soul, Inner Knower, Intuition, Divine Consciousness—you choose whatever word or phrase works in your experience.
Unprecedented Transformation “Your emotions are the force field of your soul,” declare Gary Zukav and Linda Francis in Heart of the Soul, Emotional Awareness (Simon & Schuster Source, NY, 2001). Emotional awareness was not so important when the goal of humanity was physical survival—building shelters, finding food, learning skills. “Our species is undergoing an unprecedented transformation…. Comfort and affluence are no longer goals that inspire even among those who live in poverty. The new goal is spiritual development. An awareness is emerging in millions of individuals that we are more than bodies and minds, more than enzymes and molecules, and that each of us is more than a temporary presence in the Universe….[These sentiments echo scientific discoveries in physics and relativity.]
Reach for Empowerment “Emotional awareness is more than applying techniques to this circumstance or that circumstance. It is a natural expression of an orientation that turns your attention toward the most noble, fulfilling, joyful, and empowering part of yourself that you can reach for. That is your soul.”
Align Personality with Soul These authors are making the challenging journey from their heads to their hearts. Linda Francis had scored significant business successes when she cofounded Genesis: The Foundation for the Universal Human. Zukav is a Green Beret Nam vet, Harvard graduate and wrote about the mind expanding discoveries of physics and relativity in The Dancing Wu Li Masters, An Overview of the New Physics (Bantam Books, NY, 1979). It’s been 110 years since Einstein’s special theory of relativity. Zukav saw the connection between physics and eastern philosophies. As — continued on next page

spiritual partners, Zukav and Francis declare their mission to align their personalities with their souls. The result of such alignment is authentic power.
enriches my spirit.
Living in Joy
Your throat is your fifth center and represents your relationship to your self-expression. You may think that the flu caused your sore throat, but it would be more accurate to say that what made your throat vulnerable in the first place was some level of Fear or Doubt in your self-expression. “The departure of energy from your energy system is a real event that produces physical experiences, which can be observed easily when you focus your attention on your body,” these authors explain. So if your self expression reflects Love and Trust, you might still have gotten the flu but the symptoms wouldn’t have included a sore throat and coughing. Zukav and Francis describe the symptoms of healthy fifth center processing, “…you express yourself clearly and easily. Your voice is full and strong.” You might try affirming I enjoy discovering and effectively expressing Who I Am.
“Authentic power is being fully engaged in the present moment. It is being creative without limitation. It is enjoying the company of all life. It is caring and being cared for…. It is living in joy,” they write. “You cannot align your personality with your soul without becoming conscious of your emotions.” Processing Energy I invite you to move towards your own alignment of personality and soul right now by manifesting more positive emotions in each of your main energy centers or chakras. There are seven that comprise the energy pathway as real in every human as our cardiovascular or digestive pathways provide blood and nourishment. Energy enters your body at the crown of your head, which is center #7, travels down through five other centers to the base of your torso, which is center #1, and back up the energy centers to exit at your crown. When energy is being processed at each of the seven centers in Love and Trust the neighboring physical structures are functioning comfortably and effectively. The only other way energy can be processed is Fear and Doubt, which causes emotional and physical distress. Energy Center #7 The crown of your head is where energy is processed germane to your relationship with the ethereal cosmos. If Love and Trust are functioning you have a sense of beneficent connection, gratitude, contentment and joy whether or not you think you have any understanding of this nonphysical state. If you get headaches at the top of your head or experience negative emotional issues relating to your place in the cosmos, these are signals from your soul to enhance Love and Trust in all life, and yours in particular. You might start with an affirmation such as This is a beneficent Universe and I am a valuable part of It. Energy Center #6 Center #6 is behind the middle of your forehead above the bridge of your nose. It relates you to the nonphysical whole similar to your seventh center but in ways that are more specific to you and your personal journey from head to heart. When this center is processing energy in Love and Trust you sense or intuit the intentions of other people even if those people don’t share them, according to Zukav and Francis. “This center provides bearings for you on the ocean of your experiences. It allows you to see how the Earth school works, and the perfection of it.” So if you’ve got tension there or are feeling adrift in your life think and do things with Love and Trust that bring this center’s work back into balance. Affirm something like, I enthusiastically open to guidance from Inner Wisdom for the next right action that 30

The authors expound, “The first three centers form a group. Through this group energy enters your energy system, enables you to see beyond the limitations of your five senses, and empowers you to express yourself. This is the beginning of your spiritual journey.” Energy Center #4 Personal caring is the hallmark of the fourth center in the middle of your chest. That’s why it’s called the heart chakra, and it actually is the heart of your energy system. “It connects the centers above it with the centers below it. When you see through your heart, feel through your heart, and perceive through your heart, you go directly to the core of the matter. You combine your ability to see clearly and express yourself with your daily activities. You are integrated and integrating…. you are open to others and the Universe, grateful for others and the Universe, and strong of heart.” Do you want to improve the way you process energy in your fourth center? Zukav and Francis suggest you invest time to vividly recall when you felt love and openness for someone. I suggest you make this meditation a nightly pre-sleep ritual—a better investment than direct deposits into your savings account. Bring power to that process with a declaration that I love myself and wholeheartedly give and receive love. Energy Center #3 Just above the organ of your stomach and just below your sternum is your solar plexus chakra. In Chinese medicine the stomach organ is the seat of emotions, which has always made sense to me observing countless clients and students suffering impaired digestion and other gastric disorders due to worry. In Zukav’s and Francis’ language, “Balancing your body chemistry and reducing acid in your stomach will not reach the root of the problem, which is energy leaving this center in Fear and Doubt.” Consciously generating thoughts and actions that move you with Love and Trust towards reasonable solutions will upgrade the quality of

your whole life as well as your digestive system. I suggest you affirm I relax into this present moment and feel all that is well. Energy Center #2 If you place your hand like a mitten with your thumb under your navel, at the border of your little finger is your abdominal chakra where energy is processed around creativity, new thoughts, insights, inspiring perceptions, care and intimacy. Negative expressions of exploitation, predatory power and shame are personal messages from your soul calling for more Love and Trust. Focusing on this center you might affirm I welcome opportunities to express my creativity in ways that enrich Life.
Before going to sleep each night, sense these energy centers one by one as you affirm simple statements with Love and Trust. Change the wording for a comfortable fit. If an affirmation seems too far fetched, preface it with “I aspire to believe…” or “I endeavor to…” #7 Crown: This is a beneficent Universe and I am a valuable part of It. #6 Forehead: I enthusiastically open to guidance from Inner Wisdom for the next right action that enriches my spirit.

Your earth connection is the energy center at the perineum near your genitals. You feel grounded, at home on earth, nourished and rooted by your experiences, comfortable with the earth’s seasonal rhythms. To improve the way you process energy at this first chakra, the authors recommend finding a patch of ground or at least a ground floor, even carpeted, to rest upon while meditating on the earth’s supportive and nurturing power. I often walk barefoot outdoors performing such a meditation. I’ve used a hotel balcony, or without one, a warm soak in the tub to renew my experience of Love and Trust for Mother Earth. I affirm Mother Earth, enduring and wise, is my blessed source of air, water, food, shelter and community.
Who I Am.
Let Your Internal Landscape Bloom “In the past,” say Zukav and Francis, “we survived by learning everything we could about the Earth school. We learned how to find water, grow food, make fire and build shelters. We developed science and technology. None of these things will now help us evolve further. The direction of our attention is shifting one hundred and eighty degrees. We are learning how to turn around and see what we never noticed before—our internal landscape.” Spending a few moments every day cultivating Love and Trust makes that landscape and your life a truly revitalized spring song.

Can Your Food Even Healthy Food Be Hurting You?
O

ne of the major advancements in science in recent years has been the expanded understanding of the immune system and its far greater and more important role in general health and wellness. Initially, it was thought that our immune system only protected us from “invaders” from the environment, bacteria or viruses. We now understand the immune system plays a protective role as well. The defense component of the immune system does fight off those “invaders” that cause illnesses and the repair component helps restore tissue and organ damage the illness may have caused. If either the defense or repair function becomes overburdened, immune dysfunction and disease may result. “Recent studies have shown that when the defense elements or lymphocytes (type of white blood cell) of the immune system are burdened due to the effect of foreign antigens, the vital repair process suffers. Organs and tissues weaken over time, and the body’s ability to fight off future assaults is reduced. The effect of immune system dysfunction can result in chronic inflammatory and auto immune diseases that often defy treatment.”1
Delayed food and chemical sensitivities are different than allergies!
The greatest burdens to our immune system are remnants of incomplete digestion and environmental antigens. For example: if an apple is identified on your food sensitivity results, this would mean that every time you eat an apple your immune system is responding as if it is a “foreign invader”. Imagine your immune system responding to 2 or 3 (in most cases even more) antigens at once over the course of a week, a month, and if left unaddressed, even years. You can see how the system can get overburdened very quickly. By identifying these immune triggers and avoiding exposures, the burden can be reduced or even eliminated. This can help the defense and repair system to return to optimal function.
Not all labs are not created equal While some labs only look at the Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody, First State Health & Wellness uses the gold standard in delayed food and chemical sensitivity labs to observe lymphocyte reactions. This is akin to peeking inside the immune system for a very clear picture of how the system is responding. Thus giving you a window of opportunity to repair and restore tolerance. Combine your delayed food reactions and chemical sensitivities report with a multi-phase detox and the end result is improved and sustainable health!
Delayed sensitivities can be hard to find because symptoms happen 3 hours to 3 weeks after the exposure. Those delayed food reactions and chemical sensitivities further contribute to chronic low-grade systemic inflammation. What happens when we have inflammation? Anything can happen! Infertility rates go up, unidentified skin conditions, inability to lose weight, chronic “invisible” pain, thyroid dysfunction, diabetes, the list is really endless. 1 Dr. Russell Jaffe, ELISA/ACT Biotechnologies

Eating During Exercise Whether you’re a “weekend warrior” trying to stay fit or an individual that has lost their way and trying to get back into the swing of things to make a lifestyle change to healthy living, what you eat can affect how you perform and your mood throughout the day. Eating right can give you the edge to help energize your workout or reach that 5pm deadline. But which foods are best for fitness activities, and which should you avoid? With so many sports drinks, bars, powders, and supplements to choose from, how do you know which are best? Or can you skip the expensive supplements and get everything you need from a well-planned diet? Fueling any exercise regimen requires quality carbohydrates, lean protein, heart-healthy fats and fluids. Your muscles rely on carbohydrate foods like breads, cereals, pasta, rice, fruits and vegetables for a quick energy source. Protein is essential in building and maintaining muscles and for healthy blood cells. Blood cells deliver nutrients and oxygen to working muscles. Correct food and proper hydration provide the body with the essentials to keep up with your everyday tasks and stresses. Without these crucial fuels and fluids, your body will have a hard time performing at its best. Monitor your hydration status through two simple measures: Weigh yourself before and after exercise and replace lost weight with 2 cups of fluids for each pound lost. Check the color of your urine. When you’re hydrated, your urine will be a light straw color. Tips to Keep You Fueled and Your Body Energized A good sports drink contains 14-15 grams of carbohydrates in 8 ounces. It should also contain about 110 milligrams of sodium and 30 milligrams of potassium in the same volume. If exercising to lose weight, stick to water or a “lighter” version of sports drinks with fewer carbs and calories. Look for energy bars that contain about 5 grams of protein, with some carbohydrates (preferably with more naturally occurring sugars) and very little fat. Many energy bars are just glorified, expensive candy bars, so remember that “energy” means calories and watch out for high-calorie bars. They are helpful for athletes on the go, so if you can’t eat before a long tennis match, an energy bar can help.

Believe It Or Not
by Suzanne Eder
No doubt you’ve heard it said, “Your beliefs create your reality.” If you’re like many people, you are intrigued by the idea and feel, intuitively, that it makes sense. You may already have explored shifting your beliefs in order to create a reality – a life – you love, yet perhaps you can’t always get there from here. Either it isn’t obvious what you believe that runs counter to what you want, or what you believe just seems so absolutely true you don’t see any way of shifting it. You are not alone! So let me share my perspective on what it really takes to change a belief, because it is possible to shift your beliefs in order to create a more deeply fulfilling life - and learning to do it intentionally will give you a welcome sense of empowerment. Without further ado, here is my answer to the question, “What does it really take to change a belief?” Intention…Awareness…Willingness…Practice…all resting on a solid foundation of self-love: Let’s look at the self-love piece first. What it takes to change a belief is, at heart, a commitment to do so. A decision to do so. And fundamentally the decision you’re making is that you are deserving of living a deeply fulfilled life, and you’re willing to find ways to empower yourself to do so. 34
That’s the foundation of self-love: you are worthy of happiness and fulfillment. AND you will love yourself through the experience of shifting your beliefs rather than being a taskmaster and using the process as an excuse to beat yourself up. The process itself looks something like this: You intend to live a fulfilled life, you become willing to expand your awareness so that you can recognize the beliefs that are limiting you, then you intend to shift them, and you willingly employ the practices that help you form more empowered beliefs. Going into depth about this process and each of its elements is beyond the scope of a single article. But there is one thing I want to offer which can help you identify and let go of your limiting beliefs, starting right now, and it draws on the element of willingness: Be willing to consider that what you think is true about somethingand particularly, what you think is true about yourself - is actually a belief and not a fact. This is key, and it gets to the heart of why we often have difficulty letting go of limiting beliefs. We know intellectually that beliefs can be changed, but we don’t think “reality” can be changed. (We

generally haven’t grasped that reality is not fixed and predictable but is, instead, an organic, fluid and ongoing creative process.) We continually draw conclusions about life that we think are obvious statements of fact, when in truth they are interpretations. Interpretations that we believe to be true.
Beliefs.
And because of the vibrational nature of this universe, beliefs – thoughts we believe to be true – have a particular energetic frequency. One of the properties of thought-energy is something called entrainment, which means that a strongly held thought can influence other vibrations to harmonize with it. It becomes, in effect, magnetic. The impact of our focus on that magnetic thought or belief amplifies this effect. Our focus serves as the tuner on a radio, in effect selecting a particular frequency. When we’re on that frequency, all we can see or know are things that are on that same frequency. So an entrenched belief, either conscious or unconscious, will draw to us experiences - and interpretations of those experiences - we see as evidence that the belief is true. The more evidence we see, the more we think “this is the way it is,” and on it goes. It takes a genuine willingness to step back from all of that and consider the possibility that the belief is the defining force and the circumstances are the result, and not the other way around. I chose the word “defining” very carefully. It isn’t that beliefs alone create our reality; the creative process of bringing something forth from the nonphysical to the physical involves far more than beliefs. Yet our beliefs limit or define what, of all the infinite possibilities we could experience, can actually show up in our lives.
thoughts affect the ideas you have, the actions you take and the experiences that tend to show up. Become willing to ask this deceptively simple yet potent question:
“What if this really isn’t true?” Asking that question with genuine curiosity will open you to new insights, and new insights open you to new choices and new experiences. Explore those insights with an open mind and an open heart, and let yourself be led to new possibilities that inspire you. A word of caution: do not engage in a debate with yourself! Resist the temptation to come back with, “Of course it’s true, and here’s all the evidence!” There will always be evidence to support entrenched beliefs. That’s how this vibrational dynamic works. The whole point is to keep being willing to see it as a belief, not as a fact – and then being willing to challenge it, let it go, or invest your focus somewhere else. This is another deceptively simple yet potent question that can help you make that shift: “What else is true, about me or about this situation, that is more supportive or empowering?” Again, ask and answer the question with an open heart and an open mind. Stand firmly on your foundation of self-love and commit to seeing a deeper truth about yourself that will support you in moving forward. And remember always that you are worthy of happiness and fulfillment.
For example, let’s say you want to lose weight. You’ve lost weight before, several times, but gained it back. As you embark on a new diet and exercise program, you feel an underlying sense of resignation or hopelessness; you secretly think that you don’t really have what it takes to keep the weight off. That conclusion feels like a fact to you, but in truth it is a belief, one that has become well-established and is vibrating powerfully. But if you’re willing to see it as a belief and not as a fact, you immediately move to a more empowered place, and that’s because it is possible to change beliefs - and therefore to create a whole new lived experience. A new reality. So become willing to notice thoughts you have about yourself and what is possible for your life, which you believe to be true and which obviously limit you in some way. Observe how those www.livingwellmagazine.net

Acupuncture Can Offer Relief: When it Comes to Headaches
Headaches Headaches are a common complaint in many medical offices. Causes of headaches are wide-ranging but can be from neck tightness or sinus congestion. Headaches may also be different based on location. Migraines are a type of headache that can be debilitating. In addition to pain, a migraine sufferer may have nausea, auras, and/or sensitivity to light and sound. There does not seem to be many choices other than medications for headache sufferers. Acupuncture and Headaches In Chinese medicine, headaches are treated based on location and severity. Points are specific for each individual as well as for each headache. A frontal headache, for example, is treated differently than one along the temples. Acupuncture is effective at helping decrease frequency and severity of headaches by promoting normal blood and Qi (energy) flow in the head. Stress Contributes to Headaches Stress is extremely common in our society. It is common for someone to say they have a stress or tension headache. In Chinese medicine, stress causes the liver to get tense. It is then unable to promote proper Qi flow in the body and head. Qi is responsible for moving the blood properly and therefore when it is stagnant, blood becomes static as well. In the head, this can cause debilitating headaches, which increases stress. Other disturbances can also result including digestive upsets and muscle tightness. Muscles of the neck and back can also contribute to and worsen headaches. Acupuncture helps to improve Qi flow and reduce muscle tightness to decrease headache frequency and severity. Diet and Headaches
also block the sinuses and sinus type headaches can result. Not eating enough and dehydration also contribute to headaches. Your acupuncture practitioner is also able to instruct you on dietary changes that can be made to reduce the generation of dampness and phlegm. Additional Headache Causes Other causes of headaches can include lack of sleep, long hours at the workplace, and accidents or falls. Lack of sleep, due to insomnia or poor sleep habits, can disrupt the normal flow of all energy of the body, promoting headaches. Working long hours can increase stress with results as stated above, but can also affect energy levels causing more headaches. Accidents and falls to the head or neck and back can increase headache frequency. Injuries bring immediate stagnation, and the decreased blood movement can cause chronic, sometimes severe headaches. Acupuncture works to improve sleep, decrease stress, and promote proper Qi and blood flow. The result is less severe and less frequent headaches. Migraines Migraines are often called vascular headaches. The throbbing nature and accompanying symptoms such as nausea and sensitivity to light and sound, reveals the change of blood flow in the head. In addition to acupuncture, other techniques such as cupping and Gua Sha are implemented to decrease migraine severity and frequency. Acupuncture can be used, in addition to your current treatments, for migraines. Although there are many types and causes of headaches, all can see improvement with acupuncture. If you suffer from headaches or migraines, schedule an acupuncture appointment today! Dr. Kelly Brown is a chiropractor and acupuncturist with Pure Wellness. Many diets can contribute to headaches. A rich diet with many sweet and greasy foods will contribute to damp and phlegm formation in the body. Phlegm and damp are specific Chinese pathogens that can cause heavy sensations and blockage of the channels, for instance. This blockage of channels can also increase muscle tension, which then complicates headaches. Phlegm can 36

HANDS ON HEALTH by: Ann Wilkinson P.T.M.S,
Q:
I would like to know more about your protocol concerning diet. What can I do to help myself decrease inflammation and alkalize my body to improve my condition?
A:
There is quite a range of depth for which one can take responsibility for one’s own health. Sometimes we are forced to take things into our own hands, because we have run out of conventional options, So many times, when injuries, illnesses, and mishaps seem to be defeating;one can say, “My life is actually better because of this event. My life changed course in a way that made me a better person.” When the medications stop taking pain away, when your stomach cannot handle any more Motrin, when you have ingested every type of vitamin cocktail and probiotic, and your skin is shriveled like a prune from too many epsom salt baths, it is time to clean house. There is a famous auryvedic doctor in India named Pankash Naram. When he went to study with his teacher, the first directive he received was to clean the waiting room bathroom. Of course, as a doctor, he was at first, quite offended. Only when he was able to clean the bathroom to absolute, pristine, purity did his teacher accept him as an intern to learn how to heal the human body. For the body to heal it must be cleaned and purified. First, routinely make sure your water supply is pure and keep youself hydrated. Next, empty your home of non-organic and preservative-laden foods. Then, relinquish all diet sugars, high fructose corn syrup, wheat, and non GMO corn or rice. Get colonics and participate in liver cleanse and parasite cleanse. If the stomach and intestine have been irritated for a long time, L- glutamine, aloe, slippery elm all promote healing. Once the colon is cleaned, and healed, it can properly absorb. If you follow up right away with good quality probiotics, and eat lots of good fats (think coconut oil, cacao oil, organic grass fed butter, etc.), eat green and raw organics as much as possible. Make sure your vitamins, protein and trace minerals are at optimal levels. Use good brands with natural vs. synthetic ingredients. You will keep your colon healthy and it will lead the rest of your organs to optimal health. Exercise gently and exercise in such a way that
makes you smile. Sweat often as it detoxifies. Breathe deeply. Be gentle with yourself, yet discipline is your friend as you replace bad habits with good ones. As you become more in tuned with your body and its needs, you will start to go deeper into the layers of what you need. What you need will come to you in from a variety of sources. Open your mind and allow it to absorb as much as you can. You will start to take back your healing power and directing it on yourself. As you learn more out about homeopathy and herbs as well as begin to refine you cooking skills to attain a better diet; health escalates. Using herbs to cleanse the blood, alkalize your body and soothe your joints. You will gain clear action steps. One person may have access to an herbalist who makes their formula. Another might grow and prepare the herbs themselves. For one person bodywork is more effective than Yoga and for others there must be both before they experience relief. The more knowledge you have about what you have available alternatively concerning chronic ilness and inflammation, the more options and choices you have. For most people homeopathy followed by herbal therapy, Myofascial and craniosacral bodywork to address fascitis, posture realignment, stretching and strengthening, meditation and positive thinking all are essential contributions you can make to yourself. Listen to your body. Love your body...and manifest your healing as your thoughts become reality. Trust that you have come to this place for a reason and then teach and share your knowledge with others.

The Destroyer of Dreams
By Joe White
I travel around the country, speaking on stages to hundreds of people. I love when at the end of my talks someone will come up to me and share their breakthrough moments. One of the questions I get most often is, “What is the destroyer of dreams?”
“Ann’s gifted.
People love to answer their own questions. They will say; self sabotage, limiting beliefs, doubt, hesitation and fear; these are all popular answers. They all are huge factors but I think there is something that can trump all of them. A study of top CEO’s asked “ what are the top reasons you are succesful?” As you can imagine the answers differed greatly, but there was one common thread among the CEO’s.Astonishingly it wasn’t a trait that was an internal resource, it was something outside of them. The common thread each had was they all had someone who believed in them. These are top executives, Type A personality men and women who all recognize one thing. You must have someone or people who believe in you. Too often we surround ourselves with negative people. People who would rather be naysayers then believers. Tell you what you can’t do or why it wont work. We call these people friends or even worse at times they are family. We even protect them, make excuses for them and at times agree with them. Please read this slowly. If you want to achieve any greatness in life, financial, relationship, business, career or anything that matters to you, you will not achieve if you are surrounded by negative people who bring you down. Jim Rohn said, “You can help a thousand but you can’t carry three on your back.” It is time to cut them free and find yourself people who believe in you. People who encourage you, challenge you to be greater not knock you and keep you down.

RECIPES Credits: Big Flavors from a Small Kitchen by Chris Honor & Laura Washburn Hutton photos: Tamin Jones First published in Great Britain in 2015 by Mitchell Beazley.
BUTTERNUT SQUASH MINT ROSEMARY ALMOND
Chris Honor is an Australian-born chef who has been hailed by Giles Coren of The Times as ‘a nailedon culinary genius’, running ‘the most rewarding small local restaurant I have encountered in years’. His recipes for great salads, sweet and savory bakes, soups, and wonderful sharing plates are highly original, but really simple to create at home, and with American food writer Laura Washburn Hutton he shares 100 of his most memorable recipes. Chris writes: ‘What this book will offer the reader is an education in balancing taste and texture, with plenty of visual inspiration. It is as much guidebook as cookery book because I don’t necessarily think in terms of recipes, I think in terms of combinations. Mix up the flavors and textures and, at the same time, make it appeal to the eye. Be generous; make it unpredictable; this is what I do. My book will teach the reader to do this too.’

Serves 4 to 6
An eclectic mix of cooked and raw ingredients that fi nds butternut squash getting into bed with apples, mint, and grapes. Weird, but wonderful. Try it.
2 butternut squash 1/2 cup red rice, cooked and cooled 1/2 cup grape molasses 2 apples juice of 1 lemon 1 small bunch of fresh mint a few sprigs of fresh rosemary, leaves stripped and chopped 1 small bunch of black grapes, grapes halved 1/2 fresh red chile, seeded and thinly sliced 1 cup whole almonds, roasted 1/2 cup dried currants 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/2 cup Chinese black rice vinegar salt and freshly ground black pepper Preheat the oven to 4000 F and line a baking pan with nonstick parchment paper. To prepare the squash, cut them in half lengthwise, scoop out the seeds, and cut into 1/2-inch thick halfmoon slices. Put into a large bowl, add the cooked rice and grape molasses, and toss to coat. Arrange in a single layer on the baking pan and roast for 20 to 30 minutes, or until tender when pierced with a fork. Slice the whole apples very thinly and coat them with the lemon juice to prevent discoloring. Put all the ingredients except a few mint sprigs into a mixing bowl. Toss gently. Mound on a serving platter, season, add the remaining mint sprigs, and serve. Note: A nice variation here is to use fresh halved figs instead of the grapes.

PORK DRIED MANGO POWDER GINGER ROOT APPLE DATES
MEAT I love dried mango powder and am always looking for ways to incorporate it into my cooking. After some experimentation, I discovered that amchur (dried mango powder) and pork are like two best friends who haven’t quite met yet. But now that I’ve introduced them, they are inseparable, at least in my kitchen. Here they team up with pork’s traditional partner, apple, and a good whack of chile-ginger spice heat and some balsamic for tang. A very successful encounter.
42
SERVES 4 TO 6 2. lb to 3 lb 2 oz rindlesss pork loin 1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup soft dark brown sugar 2 3/4 oz amchur powder (dried mango powder) 3 1/2 oz fresh ginger root, peeled and grated 2 fresh red chiles, seeded and sliced 5 apples 5 dried dates, pitted 2 large red onions, thickly sliced 1 cup balsamic vinegar Preheat the oven to 425 F. 3 cinnamon sticks
Score the fat layer on the pork in a criss-cross pattern, trying not to cut into the meat. Set aside. In a bowl, combine the honey, brown sugar, mango powder, ginger, and chiles and stir to combine. Rub this mixture into the pork, massaging it all over to distribute it evenly. Core the apples and stuff with the dates. Set aside. Arrange the onion slices in a roasting pan and set the apples on top. Place the pork in the pan and splash the balsamic over all, throw in the cinnamon, and put into the oven. Immediately reduce the heat to 3500 F and roast for about 1 hour. The top of the meat will become crisp and dark. Remove the pork and slice. Save any pan juices to either drizzle over or serve alongside—the juices are gold dust. Serve with the apples.

With a very small restaurant, and a loyal local clientele, having good staff is as important as serving good food, and I have been incredibly lucky. Emily has been with us since very early on. Not only is she excellent at front of house, she bakes as well, and this is her recipe. In fact, in the beginning, she would bake this one for the cake table.
GUINNESS DATES CHOCOLATE
SERVES 8 TO 10 8 fl oz can of Guinness 2 1/2 sticks unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing 1 1/4 cups unsweetened cocoa powder 1 3/4 cups superfine sugar 1/2 cup milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 eggs 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon baking powder 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 pitted dried dates, very finely chopped FOR THE FROSTING 3 1/2 oz white chocolate, finely chopped 3/4 cup cream cheese
Preheat the oven to 3500 F, and grease and line an 8.-inch springform cake pan. In a large saucepan, combine the Guinness and butter and melt over low heat. Remove from the heat, add the cocoa powder and sugar, and stir to blend. Stir in the milk and vanilla, and then add the eggs one at a time, mixing after each addition. Put the baking soda, baking powder, and flour intoa mixing bowl and stir to combine. Add the cocoa mixture, folding gently with a large spatula to blend thoroughly. www.livingwellmagazine.net

Add the dates, give the batter a quick stir, and transfer it to the prepared pan. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, or until a skewer inserted in the center comes out dry. Transfer to a wire rack, unlatch the pan, and let cool. Meanwhile, make the frosting. Melt the white chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of barely simmering water. In a small bowl, stir together the melted chocolate and cream cheese and use it to frost the cooled cake. 43
diagnosis and treatment of disease. All this information allows the veterinarian to choose the appropriate acupuncture points on the body to treat. Acupuncture needles are very thin and vary by length, width and shape of the head. All needles used are sterile and are disposed of after one use. Today, acupuncture is practiced on dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, hamsters, gerbils, chinchillas, pigs, sheep, goats, cows, ducks, various birds and even exotic mammals. I’m sure the list will continue to grow.
Q:
I understand there are many different types of treatment for people interested in holistic medicine. I had a serious injury years back that left me with multiple problems, including disc disease and finally, arthritis. I was referred to an acupuncturist. It was an excellent experience and was very helpful. Most of my pain went away. Is this something that can be done on pets? I have a 12 year old Burnese Mountain dog with hip problems. Would acupuncture be beneficial to him?
A:
Yes, acupuncture could help you pet’s condition. First, let me explain what holistic medicine is. Holistic veterinary medicine is an all-encompassing approach to treatment in which all aspects of the pet’s life are taken into consideration. An alternative or holistic veterinarian also wants to know about the your dogs environment, present and past diet, emotional status, genetics, behavior, past medical problems, daily routine, prior hospitalizations and past surgeries. In this way, we can assess the total patient. Holistic veterinarians look for the underlying cause of the problem and the root of the problem. We don’t just treat symptoms and cover the problem “with a band-aid.” Acupuncture is the placement of tiny needles into specific locations on the body for the purposes of healing. The use of acupuncture in animals is documented in the Chinese literature over three thousand years ago. Many of the same principles are practiced, researched and taught in China and around the world today. The ancient Chinese were astute observers, recognizing the cyclical nature of the environment. They recognized the balance of nature: day and night, heaven and earth, male and female, birth and death, winter and summer and spring and fall. Additionally, veterinarians that practice Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine assess the tongue and pulses. The tongue is observed for shape, width, color, markings and coating. Each of these factors gives the practitioner information about internal organ function and any deficiency or excess that may be present. Pulse diagnosis provides a more current status of internal issues. Pulses, for example, can be described as rapid/slow, superficial/middle/deep, thin/wide or slippery/rolling/bounding. The result is a complete medical system focused on prevention, 44
The neurohumeral events that take place as a result of needle placement initiates a series of reactions in the body. The result is the release of endorphins, encephalins and other neurotransmitters. It also can release the body’s natural pain killers, increase oxygenation, increase white blood cell counts, increase the blood supply to treated areas, increase antibody production and stimulate bone healing. The ability to increase white blood cells is extremely important in patients undergoing chemotherapy. One of the side effects of chemotherapy is a lowering of the white blood cell count. By treating an acupuncture point called Stomach 36 (St 36); this value can be raised into the normal range. The same applies to those patients that become anemic, indicated by a decreased red blood cell count, decreased hemoglobin concentration and a decreased hematocrit. Presently, acupuncture in companion animals can be used to treat osteoarthritis, intervertebral disc disease, disc herniation, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, spondylosis and degenerative joint diseases. Other conditions that have responded positively in my wellness center include : allergies, asthma, bronchitis, dermatitis, vomiting, diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, gastritis, gastroenteritis, colitis, kidney disease, liver disease, seizures, cancer, fecal and urinary incontinence, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, urinary tract issues, immune system support, pain management and much more. There are now a number of holistic veterinarian that are utilizing acupuncture in their treatment plan. When searching for a veterinary acupuncturist, you want a certified veterinarian that did postgraduate courses in acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. Make sure that they have completed all the requirements involved in that process. A certified veterinary acupuncturist will have the credentials C.V.A. after their name. A list of certified vets can be found on the web site of the American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture at www.AAVA.org.
