Amazingly enough, the holiday season is upon us. Thanksgiving, Chanukah and of course, “Black Friday”, the biggest shopping day of the year. Which is quickly followed by the excitement of stringing up lights and a month long excuse to overindulge and overspend in anticipation of Christmas and the New Year. If that string of sentences seemed to carry an undertone of displeasure then you read wrong. Please know, we are in no way suggesting that anyone refrain from partaking in holiday festivities, as we will very readily be participating.

I must say, in the past couple of years we have gotten a little bit better in the overspending department, (the key words are being a “little bit”). At the same time, we always make it a point to share our enthusiasm with others by spreading some happiness all around. We always keep in mind that this time of year can have quite the opposite affect on those who suffer from depression especially during the holidays, and those whose economic position simply won’t allow them to experience holiday joy,but feel obligated to friends and family to participate regardless. So if you qualify for that free turkey at the market because you have spent more than enough leading up to Thanksgiving, but don’t really need it for your own holiday meal; please think about sharing it with a friend who may need it more than you do. If at all possible, think about adopting a family or donating old toys and clothing that are still in good condition to an organization that can get them to the people who really need them. Having your child donate toys that they really don’t play with any longer makes room for new ones, is a great way to teach your children to think about the children who are less fortunate than they are; in the true spirit of the Advertising Inquiries: season…giving. There has been considerable talk of how dangerous synthetic sugar substitutes may be for our health, but little evidence of harm has actually come forth and their environmental impacts may be more reason for concern.

Sugar and Artificial Sweeteners have Environmental Impacts The production of sugar has indeed taken a huge environmental toll. “Sugar has arguably had as great an impact on the environment as any other agricultural commodity,” reports the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), citing biodiversity loss as a result of the “wholesale conversion of habitat on tropical islands and on coastal areas” to grow sugar. WWF adds that the cultivation of sugar has also resulted in considerable soil erosion and degradation and the use of large amounts of chemicals across the tropics and beyond.

Some natural food markets now carry sustainably harvested sugar that does not fit this profile, though sugar’s ugly history has led many eco-conscious consumers to look elsewhere to satiate their sweet teeth. Fortunately there are several natural and artificial options that are safe to eat and relatively benign for the environment. Perhaps the most popular choice is stevia, a sustainably harvested herb from Latin America that is 30 times sweeter than table sugar but without calories. Other natural alternatives include coconut palm sugar, barley malt syrup, brown rice syrup, agave nectar, maple syrup and raw honey. These choices may not save on calories like stevia, but they do sweeten without environmental guilt.

As for synthetic sugar alternatives, there has been considerable talk of how dangerous they may be for our health, but little evidence of harm has actually come forth and their environmental impacts may be more reason for concern. Aspartame, for example, used in Equal and also in diet sodas, is made by fermenting corn and soy, the two biggest genetically engineered crops in the U.S. Environmentalists are concerned that such tinkering with nature could have unexpected and potentially disastrous results down the road.

Another common sugar alternative, sucralose (trade name Splenda) has its issues, too. A study released in 2013 by researchers from the University of North Carolina (UNC) found that the majority of Splenda used around the world ends up in the Gulf Stream, the fast-moving ocean current that starts in the Gulf of Mexico and flows into the Atlantic Ocean and beyond into the coastal waters of Europe and Africa.

“Sucralose cannot be effectively broken down by the bacteria in the human digestive tract,” reports UNC. “As a result, the body absorbs little or no calories and 90 percent of the chemical compound leaves the body through human waste and enters sewage systems.” Since this sucralose cannot be broken down by most water treatment systems, it ends up in the oceans, where the long-term effects remain unknown.

Saccharin (trade name Sweet’N Low) got a bad rap in the 1970s when rats exposed to large amounts got bladder cancer, but it has since been vindicated: The Food & Drug Administration removed warning labels in 2000 and the Environmental Protection Agency removed it from its lists of hazardous constituents and commercial chemical products in 2010. Nonetheless, saccharin can cause problems for pregnant women and infants who consume large amounts, and also gets a veto as a petroleum derivative.

Tips for Helping your Grandparents with Hearing Loss

It’s hard to see a beloved grandparent struggle with an impairmentthat is common to aging, such as hearing loss. You may feel helpless, unsure of what you can do to help. Or you may be frustrated, not knowing the best way to convince your grandparent to accept the condition and seek treatment.

The good news is hearing loss can often be treated successfully, even in the elderly. You may assume that since hearing loss is a “natural” part of aging, it will inevitably progress and worsen into deafness, so any treatment is only a stopgap or a waste of effort and money. In fact, hearing loss is sometimesthe symptom of aninfection or a side effect of a medicationand can be treated as such.However, if the hearing loss of your grandparent turns out to beprimarily presbycusis (age-related hearing loss)this conditioncan often be kept from declining more rapidly through the early intervention and treatment with hearing aids. If nothing else, hearing aids can improve your grandparent’s daily lifeby improving their interpersonal interactions and fostering independent living.

Two of the worst things you can do areto ignore the situation andallow the difficulties of communication to distance you from your grandparent.If you want to take positive actions to help and support your grandparent during this often-difficult time,try following these tips: Have a personal discussion with your grandparent about their hearing loss. You may be tempted to pretend poor hearing isn’t really a problem by automatically raising your voice during conversations, turning the television volume up higher, and otherwise adapting to your grandparent’s diminished hearing capability. Instead, sit down with your grandparent and in a non-confrontational way, explain that you are finding you are shouting, constantly repeating, and otherwise compensating for their hearing loss. Make sure you present the situation as factand not some sort of failing or inconvenience; something for which examination and treatment is necessary, not optional.

Resist the temptation to become your grandparent’s de facto hearing aid. You may think you are helping by repeating the server’s questions at a restaurant or even by taking over all communication duties whenever you are together. In reality, you’re enabling your grandparent to avoid dealing with the realities of their hearing loss and encouraging excessive dependence. Only by recognizing they have a problem can your grandparent accept what is going on and become motivated to do something about it.

Research options for treating hearing loss and provide information to your grandparent. While many older folks are savvy Internet users, the sheer amount of data can be overwhelming. Be considerate and take some time to research

hearing care professionals in the area, along with possible insurance coverage and the treatment options available. Learn about the latest technology, such as hearing aids that also provide relief from tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and go over your gathered information with your grandparent. Work together to create a clear and simple plan for scheduling a hearing examination and steps for treatment that follow based on all of the possible outcomes from that exam. By making it a team effort, you can help your grandparent feel less confused and overwhelmed.

Become your grandparent’s hearing advocate. Whether you are among strangers, family, or friends, your grandparent has a right to be treated with the same respect and inclusion as those who can hear normally. If you find other family members or friends are not including your grandparent in get-togethers, are distancing themselves by not callingor visiting, speak to them about how hurtful this may be andhow unfair it is to exclude a loved one because of declining hearing ability. In situations where you are interacting with others, such as a store clerk, medical professional, or a friend and find they are only conversing with you, gently but firmly remind them not to act as if your grandparent isn’t there, but to ask any relevant questions directly to them.

Be kind. It’s easy to become aggravated, frustrated, or just plain exhausted repeating yourself and others,shouting to be heard in public places or over blaringTVs and radios. Just remember your grandparent is probably experiencing fear, anger, frustration, and a host of other emotions because of their hearing loss, too.

Denial is a very common response that requires your patience and understanding—albeit coupled with a firm refusal to enable it to continue.

Ignoring hearing loss will not make it go away and in fact can be dangerous to overall health. Hearing loss has been linked to other conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, depression, and dementia and should be treated like any other potentially serious symptom. Offering to accompany your grandparent to their hearing evaluation,hearing aid fitting, and theirfollow-up visits is the nicest way to demonstrate your love and support.

“They really trusted the device and had a sense of confidence that they knew what to do with the information,” Polonsky said. “The vast majority said the devices had given them more control of their diabetes, lessened the risk of hypoglycemia and significantly improved their QOLs.”

Another large study sponsored by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation reported that CGM devices for managing Type 1 diabetes “experienced significant improvements in glucose control.” That is of particular importance for every patient concerned about hypoglycemic risk.

Despite these major improvements and enhancements, there is still reluctance by some in the medical community to suggest CGM systems to patients as a viable alternative for diabetes management. Doctors, who remember the issues with models produced early last decade, may still be reluctant to recommend the new ones. Others have voiced concern that data from the CGM may be too “complex” from some patients to understand and apply. Procrastinator

There’s something I find myself learning over and over again.

Or maybe it’s more accurate – and more kind - to say that I’m continually deepening my understanding of it. It crops up repeatedly, especially when I feel I’m falling behind in whatever priorities I’ve set for myself.

The reason it feels bad is that we’re judging our choice as wrong. And in doing so, we’re subtly judging ourselves as wrong, or ineffective, or lacking in some way. It’s the selfjudgment that hurts. Let me pause here and offer another tidbit that has enriched the quality of my life time and again:

Believe me, I’m very familiar with the squirmy, uncomfortable feeling that arises when I keep putting off something I need – or even want – to do. And in contrast, I know how amazing it feels to be in the flow of productivity and accomplishment. So why, you might ask, do I think there’s nothing wrong with that sludgy, no-progress state we call procrastination?

A signal that what you think you “should” do isn’t really what you’re genuinely willing to do, or what would serve you best.

It has to do with the word “wrong.” Let’s suspend the label of “procrastination” and describe the experience in a neutral way: it is a choice not to do something in this moment.

Or perhaps, even more simply, it is a choice made among alternatives. Again – in this moment.

In the absence of self-judgment, resistance is an opportunity to slow down and learn something about yourself.

A reflection of a fear you may have about moving forward which, until it is acknowledged, cannot be challenged or released.

An invitation to pause and modify your plans based on new information.

to get their attention – their loving, curious attention. What we call procrastination is an invitation to greater self-awareness and deeper self-regard.

I remember a former student of mine who was immensely frustrated with herself for not making progress on her masters’ thesis. The topic for the thesis has actually been suggested by her boyfriend, who was a physician. My client had no genuine interest in the subject; what she really wanted to write was a novel. But she’d chipped away at the thesis, slowly and grudgingly, until her own resistance ground her to a halt.

The same is true for you. Your resistance – formerly known as procrastination – has information for you. Before assuming you are lazy or simply unmotivated, pause. Refuse to judge yourself.

Determine to love yourself instead. Get curious about what your resistance may be telling you about who you really are and what you really want for your life.

And be willing to listen.

That’s when she finally admitted to herself that the thesis had nothing to do with who she was or what she wanted to create.

She was working on it in an effort to please – and to appease – her boyfriend. She was both afraid of him and in awe of him.

He was an abusive man and the relationship was not a healthy one, something she had avoided facing for a long time. It was the resistance to the thesis that finally got her attention. As she awakened more fully to who she is and what she wanted for her life, she chose to end the relationship. She also gave herself permission to suspend work on the thesis. Shortly thereafter, she landed a job teaching creative writing at a local community college, which she loved.

Had she not judged herself as a procrastinator, she could have more readily seen that her resistance wasn’t a character flaw, it

Q:

Recently, my family doctor referred me for PT, for neck and right shoulder pain. Self employed, about five hours a day at the computer, manage a household so I am on my feet for a good deal of the day also. I don’t recall any injury, could simply be the computer?

A:

It is possible an injury you cannot recall is underlying your symptoms. When I evaluate or treat someone, memories may present because they are stored in the fascia. Many times, when I touch an area a resurfacing of an injury occurs even if it was so minor it seems insignificant or so tragic it must be denied for survival sake.

In this safe setting, not only is the patient free to review the situation, as the tissue is released, the emotions, thought patterns, beliefs, and trapped energy are released as well. Old injuries may not produce immediate pain other than the obvious soft tissue trauma which repairs itself in six weeks. Fascial restrictions, binding or memory may create a downward spiral overtime that become symptomatic at a critical point. Usually, the point when the influence of gravity combined with the fascial restriction can no longer be opposed by muscles weakening under prolonged unusual stress. The symptoms may not occur until this breaking point, long after the seemingly innocuous occurrence of mild trauma. If no injury insured you it may be your daily routine causing insult to your body. A routine where flexion of the spine is your most frequently visited position may be void of counter positioning in extension. Without a stretching routine that is individualized to counteract your daily

physical stresses you may be injuring yourself little by little over time. Muscles frequently overused become tight and rigid giving a false sense of strength. Muscles that are not used become long and weak and overtime lose the battle to such compensate. This is when collapse occurs, joints surfaces become too close and impingements occur. Frequent diagnosis of arthritis, fibromyalgia gives a patient the false notion there is no help and they have this bad luck chronic condition offered only medicine and hot tub. Osteopathic practitioners are Space Makers. Releasing fascia, improving joint integrity, strengthening long muscles, stretching short muscles all restore balance. The exercise prescription should include returning to your normal functional status and then amp it up a bit. Adult Gifts for Her Naughty List The holiday season can be a stressful time for couples, given all of the additional responsibilities and expectations that tend to come with the season. It can also be an opportunity for couples to buy each other a gift that will help to bring them closer together. This month and next month, I’m sharing with you some “intimate” gift giving ideas for your partner this holiday season. Find a moment when you can grab some alone time, as you will probably want to give these gifts in private. In this month’s edition, I’m going to focus on gifts for her and next month I will focus on gifts for him. Of course, there will be some gifts that work for either him or her, and I will include these as well. Enjoy!

Pay attention to which parts of her body she tends to conceal, and which she tends to show off, and buy something that highlights the part(s) of herself that she loves. For example, if she loves her chest and legs, but not her belly, don’t buy lingerie in separates (a bra top and panties). Instead, buy something that is a one piece, like the aforementioned Calvin Klein example.

On the other hand, if you have a partner that loves to play dress-up, and is pretty open-minded to wearing anything, you may want to push the envelope and buy something more exciting—just make sure you follow the suggestions for purchasing the right size. Also note that clothes purchased in Adult Shops tend to run a bit small. When in doubt, double check with the salesperson.

The Gift of Lingerie Lingerie as a gift is not a new idea. Lots and lots of men buy lingerie for their partners…and many times it is disastrous. In my experience in working with couples, it is disastrous for one of two reasons (or both!). First, it is the wrong size. Many women struggle with loving their bodies, just as they are, making this a very sensitive area when it comes to receiving clothes as gifts.

Buying a size too big may make her feel like you see her as larger than she is; which may hurt her feelings. Buying a size too small may embarrass her because she won’t fit into it or she may think you want her to lose weight. My suggestion to the size issue?

When she’s not home, spend some time doing reconnaissance in her clothes hamper and closet. Look at the size labels that are on her clothes—particularly the ones in the hamper, as this will ensure it is a size that currently fits her. Now that you’ve written down her bra size, panty size, pant size and shirt size; you’re ready to start shopping! Many designers will have a size chart to help you once you’ve obtained the necessary information. For example, it may say chest size 34-36” and pants size 10/12, buy Medium. If you’re struggling with a size chart, or there is no size chart, have a store associate help you. If you give them the sizes and measurements, they should be able to help you pick out something that will fit perfectly.

Second, it is not her style. When I’m talking about “style” in this context, it is about whether or not the lingerie is something she would be comfortable wearing. You may love the idea of a French maid outfit with crotch-less panties, but if that’s not something she’d be comfortable wearing, you’ve chosen something that’s not her style and it will likely sit in the closet and collect dust. My advice for you is this: chose something that may be a little bit racier than what she already has, but not too far outside of her comfort zone. For example, if she doesn’t like thongs/g-string panties, I wouldn’t purchase those. Instead, find a pair that has full bum coverage, but is made of silk, lace, or a sheer sexy material. Another example may be if she tends to always wear a t-shirt to bed, find a sexy nightgown that’s made of cotton. A nice example of this is the Calvin Klein Lace Essentials Chemise 18

Finally, if you’re not comfortable purchasing lingerie from a store, don’t worry! Most stores now have options to purchase online. Unless you are looking for a specific label, I would try Amazon.com, due to their discreet packing, and their wonderful return policies, which usually give you 90 days. Most importantly, remember that this is a gift for HER. Be sure that you are choosing something she’ll love, not just something you would love to see her wearing.

Adult Toys When it comes to toys for women, there are a few “best sellers.”

What you chose to buy greatly depends on what she already has, or doesn’t have. If the two of you have never used toys before, I suggest starting off with a toy that is basic, but well-loved.

The Hitachi Magic Wand (Fig. 2) has been a best seller for many, many years and I think it’s great for beginners.

While there are many massagers out there that may look similar, the Hitachi brand continues to be at the top of its class. It’s also

a great choice for beginners, as it has attachments (sold separately) that can be purchased later, if/when you’re both feeling more comfortable with using toys.

If you’re both already comfortable with toys, and you’re looking for something to add to her toy box, I recommend The Rabbit.

Again, this is a toy that has a lot of imitators, but I strongly suggest you purchase the Rabbit brand (rabbitvibratortoys. com). The picture here shows their original; however, they have since added a wide variety of options to choose from, each with some subtle differences.

If you’re not already using a good lubricant, I suggest you include one when giving a toy. My recommendation is Pjur Eros Original Bodyglide, because it feels natural and doesn’t leave a sticky feeling afterward. And don’t forget, if you’re buying toys to buy batteries!

Another game suggestion is Cosmo’s Steamy Sex Games. This is a deck of 120 cards, each with sensual suggestions. It’s a fun way to change up your normal routine in the bedroom. Jewelry Right now, you might be thinking, “jewelry? What’s naughty about jewelry?” Well my friends, there happens to be some very naughty jewelry out there. The company Incoqnito is known for making “intimate jewelry with dual functions.” One of my favorite examples of their work is The Incoqnito Droplet Necklace The necklace includes a “pair of discreet nipple vibrators on a 43” stainless steel chain fashioned from fine metals.” It may not have the glamour of diamonds, but I think this necklace is sure to please!

Green Tips & Tricks Magic Trees and Angry Bees —Happy Adventures in Low-Carbon Living Part 11

“At night I would lie in bed and watch the show, how bees squeezed through the cracks of my bedroom wall and flew circles around the room, making that propeller sound, a high-pitched zzzzzz that hummed along my skin. I watched their wings shining like bits of chrome in the dark and felt the longing build in my chest. The way those bees flew, not even looking for a flower, just flying for the feel of the wind...

I’m eating my 50th fig, though I lost count during this second month of an extraordinarily sumptuous harvest from one magical tree.

And the bees aren’t angry anymore. Hornets, actually. Taxonomic order: Hymenoptera (wasps, ants, bees)—the most beneficial of insects from the human point of view, serving as pollinators and parasites of other insects, according to The Handy Bug Answer Book by Dr. Gilbert Waldbauer (Visible Ink Press, MI, 1998); genus: probably Vespa or Vespula. Honeybees are a different genus, ants are a third genus. But this is not a lesson in entomology. It is an exploration of one person’s journey towards low-carbon living.

First Things First The hornets are quiet now. A month has elapsed since they stormed into my kitchen. Plugging their entry through the ceiling light fixture and capturing at least a hundred the first few days rendered my kitchen and bedroom livable, but new visitors kept appearing daily—six, ten, not that many, but where were they now coming in? I wadded several sheets of used tinfoil (no added CO2 emissions) into the ceiling hole, so I was certain they were not squeezing by it.

No Added CO2e Meanwhile, take-out and storage containers of every size and shape began creating a miniature buzzing Manhattan on my peninsular counter. It took days for them to die, so I could throw away their bodies and reuse the containers to capture the latest interlopers. How macabre. What kind of a person am I? Am I causing them pain and suffering? I certainly am suffering with guilt and self-doubt. I couldn’t release them like I do mouseguests (in a no-kill trap, freeing them after I’d cross at least one stream, 20

so they wouldn’t find their way back for more free peanut butter).

Observing Other Life I wondered if the prisoners were communicating with each other.

Individually, there were frantic incessant behaviors— walking, revving wings, exploring, seeking. Did the ones back in the hive hear or sense what was happening to the POWs, or vice versa?

Just how conscious or aware are these creatures?

Search for the Source When I ran out of containers to capture them I resorted to netting them with used plastic freezer bags. They ripped and tore their way out of those while I slept soundly in the adjoining room.

Same with a Styrofoam cup that had been washed and reused several times—bored a perfect ¼-inch hole through the side.

Where are they coming from? I carefully opened each cabinet, half expecting another hornet bombardment. No evidence.

Deep Meaning in Small Things But I did find my fly swatter. Having to kill another life form seems sad. Buddhists are the best example I know of nonviolence in this earthly hierarchy of predator and prey. Simply stated, the very act of eating for my physical survival costs some other life form its life, and sends CO2e into the atmosphere. Life, death and an ecobalance in between. Some seemingly small things have deep meaning.

Eviction Notice Meanwhile, I began my mission to evict them. First, potent vapors. I soaked some ragbag socks with eucalyptus oil.

(Laundering all my soiled rags in hot water conserves more CO2e than disposables, and kills no trees.) Deftly—one foot in the sink, one foot on a stool, crouching my body—I eased out three snakes of foil from the breached light fixture, stuffed a couple socks up the hole, pushed the foil back securely. I heard faint buzzing. Definitely not humming. Buzzing. Louder. I had purposefully waited until night thinking they’d be less active.

Buzzing definitely louder. One hornet bounced around behind the translucent ceiling panel of a central fluorescent light. Maybe I’m driving them deeper into the house rather than chasing them away.

Observing Other Life My theory proved correct. When I came home the next night and turned on the kitchen light, I spied a quivering shadow in the upper corner of the kitchen window. That’s where they were coming in: through that little space where the window track

disappears into the woodwork. I calmly picked up the fly swatter.

I did not don any protective gear, so experienced I’ve become.

One powerful, accurate strike at the center of 20 hornets clustered on a flat surface would have been easy. Here, the window framing jutted from the wall and the window glass was deeper still. Quite a knobbly terrain. Small swatter head. The escapees would indeed be mad. As I studied the situation, I saw a new arrival venturing into the light. We simply could not share the same space.

my wall studs? And what have they been doing otherwise to trash the neighborhood? (From a hornet’s point of view, maybe it is I who has trashed their neighborhood.) The answer will come after New Year’s when I perform wall surgery. Today, I am happy to see the birds back at their usual activities. However, there’s a curious constant hum on my phoneline, which Verizon has verified is inside...

Practicing Nonviolence

This is the most recent episode of many in 16 years’ aspiring to live harmoniously with Nature on my five acres of forest in the boondocks of Brandywine chateau country. “I was ill-prepared for the work I’d taken on,” writes Michael Pollan in Second Nature: A Gardener’s Education (Dell Publishing, NY, 1991).

I did my best to kill nonviolently. Does violence generate more CO2e than peace? Where Are My Birds?

Viewing the hornets entering and leaving the outside vent, I noticed the lack of birds in that area. Usually three trees at that corner of the house are hosts to local wrens, finches, jays and cardinals. I hadn’t spotted a bird within 10 yards since I agitated the hornets. Birds weren’t eating the holly or yew berries. That had a weird, unnatural feeling to it.

Yellow Jackets Vacated I was ready to use the wasp poison my neighbor had given me five years ago when he didn’t think I could evict a yellow jacket community from its underground nest. I repeatedly dumped hot dishwater into their domicile, and ran fast back into the house. At the time I was mortaring tiles onto a floorpad for my woodstove, and dumped the remains of that into their nest. Not only did they leave, I’ve not seen any yellow jackets hanging around the house since then.

I resorted to the judicious use of this poison, propelled by aerosol (severely damaging to atmosphere) in a stream “at least 20 feet straight to the nest” claims the label. Not only did this require daylight application, I’d be hanging out the kitchen window about six feet from the hornets’ entry vent. That window cranks open from the center. The crank is on the bottom. The crank doesn’t fold down. Crouching in the sink, I would have to be wary of that crank while leaning out to direct the stream of poison towards the vent without getting backsplashed. Eye protection was a must.

Hornets were coming and going. I sprayed for some seconds while holding my breath until I had slithered back inside and cranked the window shut.

Consequences The hornets are quiet now. A couple hundred are dead by my hands. Did the poison kill the rest? Or are the rest resting in their diapause stage? Hornet nests look like footballs when they’re in a tree where they belong, and are made from fibers of weathered wood mixed with saliva. What does it feel like to be a winner?

Ask Sue Springsteen. She was named the winner of a oneroom makeover from the members of the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of the National Association of Professional Organizers.

“Project Thanks” was the collective brainchild of several members of NAPO-GPC who wanted to honor the men and women of the military with a team-style free makeover. In a lottery-style drawing open to all active members who had been deployed away from home in the last 18 months, it was Sue Springsteen returning from her third tour of Afghanistan who was the lucky and gracious winner. “I never win any contests,” she exclaimed, “but I felt I had to try with any contest containing the word “‘makeover.’”

Thus, nine Professional Organizers – Kathy Luskus, Carla Shipman, Sue Frost, Debbie Lillard, Jackie Mangasarian, Ellen Faye, Jen Bowen, Gen Wallace Roe and Karen Jessee – arrived armed with labelers, files, tags, a filing cabinet, plastic bins, curtains, pillows, frames and new shelving. Heading this project was Professional Organizer Carla Shipman who had gone out earlier to Sue’s home to assess the space and Sue’s needs.

woman hours donated by ladies who all own their own businesses and who had the unique opportunity to collaborate and to combine their skills. The result was a real home makeover worthy of a military inspection.

And how did Sue feel about the process and the makeover itself? “Everyone was so calm and composed; it was easy to trust all of the volunteers in completing tasks. The final results were fantastic and even surprising. I was very humbled by the donations that came from organizers who were there that day and even from ones who weren’t.

“The result is that I am much more organized, but more importantly, it is now easier to remain organized. I received tips and guidance as well as labeled spaces and bins for items. I use that back room quite frequently now whereas I could not walk into it or relax in it before the makeover Overall, I’m extremely grateful for the kind efforts and professionalism of all involved in the makeover and planning.”

In truth, Sue, the organizers felt honored to be of service to someone who had served three tours of Afghanistan.

The original project was to organize the home office, pictures and papers, but the organizers found themselves in other corners as well. The kitchen pantry, laundry room, bathroom linen closet and a shed in the back yard all received special treatment from this team of professionals.

A clothes closet in the office was given over 40 new hangers and reorganized while bags of gently used clothing were collected and donated to a local charity.

Team members sorted and labeled baskets of miscellaneous papers and filed everything into a new filing cabinet. Other team members organized desk materials and assembled new shelving while others moved out old furniture, hung curtains, and rearranged space to be more efficient and functional. Numerous family and military pictures were organized and hung along with awards and plaques.

Upscale, casual, a chic style is the look that fits my lifestyle for travel and home. I love putting on a pair of great jeans and a cashmere sweater. I love accessorizing with the seasons with the newest pair of shoes or boots, and a Kate Spade handbag, (one of my favorite bag designers!).

This look comfortably takes me anywhere from my daily routine, right into an evening out.

Both! I believe you should keep your lipstick on and wear the shoes that feel good! Before buying boots and shoes for my store, I also try them on to see how they feel not just how they look. I want my customers to achieve not only a great look but comfort too.

A fabulous pair of pumps! The perfect pair of pumps can take you anywhere! Wear them with your favorite jeans, a stunning suit, or that little black dress.

What is the one piece of clothing or accessory you wish you owned, but would never buy yourself?

That is a difficult question for a shopaholic! I suppose a pair of Roger Vivier shoes. Vivier was the iconic designer of the stiletto which is a staple in my closet.

 Does a designer name mean anything to you? If so, who are your favorite designers?



Designer names do not mean the same as they used to. I think the big designers have become too commercialized and too available. When designers were exclusive to New York City, Rodeo Drive, Worth Avenue, Palm Beach, and not found in all the malls is when they had an influence over my purchases, but not now.

Let’s go by seasons: Fall- I need my Butter riding boots in navy suede with my skinny jeans. Winter- La Canadienne, high fashion waterproof medium heel boots for all weather. Spring and summer- must have ViVi G. essentials made in Italy, which include the perfect wedge, an exquisite pair of jeweled sandals and an Italian made handbag available in everyone’s favorite colors.

 Do you look for a bargain or is price not an issue if you love it?

I always look for value for myself and for my clients. That means finding the best quality that is reasonably priced.

Hug Away Stress and Lower Blood Pressure!

By Dr. Scott E. Rosenthal As a kid, I had mixed feelings about hugs. I loved them from Mom and Dad, but was traumatized by the affection of a loving grown-up who embraced me at every gathering. (I’m still haunted by a particularly long side-hug from this jovial woman, whose warm, fleshy armpit happened to be the exact same height as my face.) Yet, despite my early fear of paralyzing death grips, I have grown to appreciate the many health benefits of a proper hug!

Still feeling a bit stand-offish? Embrace the findings: Hugs have been shown to reduce blood pressure and can help combat the effects of stress. Loving contact before a tough day at work can “carry over and protect you throughout the day,” says psychologist Karen Grewenat the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina. Tiffany Field, of the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami Medical School, notes that research is showing that touch lowers our amount of the stress hormone cortisol. When cortisol drops, two“feel good” brain chemicals, serotonin and dopamine, increase.1 I am not suggesting you grab everyone who crosses your path, especially if you are sporting a bathing suit (and bare arms) on a hot summer day. A spouse, partner or close friend will do. Below are a few suggestions for a good hug: Keep your hands placed in a “loving” and not “love-making” place!

Bedroom hugs may be an interesting topic, but are not the focus of this article.

Only hug when it can be sincere and unforced.

The embrace should be warm and heartfelt. Focus your mind away from the dishes, work or how late you may be for an appointment and keep your attention on your co-hugger.

Forget about the shoulder-only touches with separated torsos while rapidly applying pats on the back. That feels about as good as the “dead-fish” handshake.

Warmly embrace with a firm, but not-too-hard hold.

Your bodies should be touching, but avoid pinning the other person’s arm down.

Relax and maintain a flowing breath.

There is no doubt that hugging comes with more benefits than could ever be researched. For those of you who already have a firm hold on performing this common act,take the opportunity to sneak in a few extra hugs each day. If you are uneasy about hugging, I encourage you give it a try.Remember the honor it is that you will be hugged back!

You Will Never Believe That The “Fear of Failing” Really Means You Are Afraid of….

In my near 15 years of coaching, I can say that the number one reason my clients share with me why they are not successful is, “I am afraid of failure.” On first glance it sure seems to make sense. You set a goal. There is a desire that you want. You even create some sort of action plan. Then you realize you are not following your action plan and you are not getting closer to your goal. This happens again and again. Finally you draw the conclusion that you must be afraid of failing. Yes, that explains it all. It explains why you don’t give it your all. Why you don’t follow up and why it seems you are self sabotaging your own success. So yes, your hypothesis must be correct. Right?

Perhaps… or perhaps the fear of failure is really code for...fear of success.

So wait a minute Joe, that makes no sense. Perhaps, but lets look at this a bit closer because I think you will begin to see the truth behind this myth.

Part of human psychology is that we dislike change or at least we find it uncomfortable. Change can be awkward, challenging and even humbling and because of that we tend to really like what is comfortable and familiar. Even if it is not good for us. In other words we will stay in comfort even if it negatively impacts our life.

So what really happens if you fail? It means that you are right back to where you started before you began and as undesirable of a place it may be for you, it is familiar to you. You may be unhappy about it but you know how to survive in that place. You most likely have been there for a while and you know how to navigate your way.

one creates more uncertainty? The one that gives you the devil that you know or the one that gives you the devil that you do not know?

The Solution: First step is awareness. You must become aware of what is driving you. Find out truly what is preventing you from success.

Once you become aware, you must ask yourself what is that worse that can happen? I mean really, what is the worst that can happen?

Is it that you will become embarrassed? Broken heart? Lose your investment? Be rejected? It is imperative that you understand the absolute worst that can happen to you.

Ask yourself, “Is what I want to achieve worth risking me getting the worst that could happen to me. If you answered yes, then take massive action and now focus on what you want. If you answer no, then congratulations. You need to negotiate with yourself and dig to discover what is preventing you because you are not yet on board emotionally.

By identifying your true fear, you can align with it and solve it. When you are blind to it, you keep running into a wall because you are looking the wrong way.

Recipes: Joy of Kosher

Latkes with Caviar and Cream 4 large russet potatoes (about 21⁄2 pounds) 3 large eggs, beaten 2 teaspoons kosher salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Canola oil, for frying 1 medium onion, quartered 1⁄4 cup fine cornmeal or matzoh meal 11⁄4 cups crème frâiche or sour cream Caviar, for garnish

4. Put the onion and potatoes in a food processor and pulse until pureed. Transfer the mixture to the large bowl with the eggs. Add the cornmeal and mix to combine.

5. Line a baking sheet with paper towels.

6. Using a ¼ cup measuring cup, scoop up the potato mixture and carefully drop it into the hot oil. Use the back of the measuring cup to flatten the latke. Fill the pan with as many latkes as you can, but do not let them touch.

Do not overcrowd your pan, or the latkes will be soggy instead of crispy. Fry until golden brown and crispy, 3 to 5 minutes per side. Drain on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining batter.

7. To keep the latkes warm and crispy once fried, spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet and place in a 200°F oven until ready to serve.

8. To serve, place the latkes on a large serving tray and garnish each with a generous tablespoon of crème fraiche and caviar.

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil; spray the foil with cooking spray.

2. Mix together the honey, olive oil, cumin, turmeric, cinnamon, and garlic in a small bowl. Place the chicken, onions, and potatoes in a large bowl.

Toss with three-quarters of the honey mixture and arrange in a single layer on the prepared pan. Toss the apricots and raisins with the remaining honey mixture and set aside.

1. Fill a large bowl with cold water.

Peel the potatoes, cut them into quarters lengthwise, and place them in the bowl of cold water to prevent browning.

2. Combine the eggs, salt, and pepper in a large bowl; set aside.

3. Heat about 1 inch of the canola oil in a large saute pan over medium-high heat.

3. Bake the chicken, onions, and potatoes for 35 minutes. Add the apricots and raisins and bake until the chicken is cooked through, 15 to 20 minutes more. Garnish with the pistachios and cilantro.

Basic Pull-Apart Challah 2 ounces (1⁄4 cup) active dry yeast 2 cups plus 3 tablespoons granulated sugar 6 cups warm water (90° to 100°F) 1⁄4 cup kosher salt 6 pounds high-gluten (bread) or all-purpose flour (see page 320) 4 large eggs, separated 11⁄4 cups canola oil Cooking spray 1⁄2 cup sesame seeds 1⁄2 cup poppy seeds 1. Bloom the yeast: Dissolve the yeast and 3 tablespoons sugar in 2 cups of the warm water in a medium bowl; set aside to bloom. If the yeast doesn’t bloom after 5 minutes, discard the mixture and start over.

2. Place the salt, flour, and the remaining 2 cups sugar together in a very large bowl and stir together. Add the 4 egg yolks. Make a well in the middle and add the yeast mixture and the remaining 4 cups water. Start kneading together; add . cup canola oil. Knead for 10

minutes, adding another ½ cup canola oil, a small amount at a time, to create a workable dough. The dough will become a cohesive mass yet be a bit sticky. Rub a little of the remaining ¼ cup canola oil over the top and sides of the dough. Loosely cover the dough with a kitchen towel and place the bowl in a warm spot for 15 minutes.

3. After 15 minutes, the dough will have relaxed a bit and should be easier to work with.

Lightly oil your hands and knead the dough again until smooth and satiny, 2 to 3 minutes.

Rub a little oil over the top and sides of the dough. Cover with a kitchen towel and place the bowl in a medium garbage bag. Place the open end loosely underneath the bowl to trap air. Let the dough rise in a warm dark corner of your kitchen until doubled in size, about 1 hour.

4. Uncover the dough. With lightly oiled hands, punch the dough down to release air.

Cover again with the bag, loosely tucked under, and let rise for 1 hour.

5. Divide the dough into five equal parts, about 2 pounds each. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Spray five 9-inch round baking pans with cooking spray. www.livingwellmagazine.net

6. Place one piece of dough on a smooth work surface. Squeeze out any air bubbles from the dough and roll it into a 12-inch rope. If the dough is sticking, lightly spray your worksurface with cooking spray. Cut the rope into eight equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball.

Place one ball in the center of the prepared pan and surround it with the remaining balls.

Repeat with the remaining pieces of dough so you have five pans of challah. Loosely cover each pan with a kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let rise 15 minutes. (If you can’t fit all the pans in your oven at once and you want your challahs to be as beautiful as possible, shape the remaining dough while the first round of challahs are in the oven so they don’t rise for too much longer than 15 minutes before baking.)

7. Beat the egg whites with 1 teaspoon water in a small bowl and brush the challahs.

Sprinkle each with sesame or poppy seeds or a combination of the two.

8. Bake for 10 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 350°F and bake until tops are dark golden brown, 35 to 45 minutes more.

Let cool 15 minutes before serving warm, or cool completely on a wire rack.

Q:

Could you give the readers some examples of healthy treats I can offer my cats? I want something that does not contain all the preservatives, colorings and fillers commonly found in the cat treats on the market. Thank you in advance.

A:

The first thing I would like to say is that cats are obligate carnivores, which simply means that their digestive system is set up to transform, transport and metabolize meatbased diets. Cats also require an amino acid in their diet called taurine. Dogs do not have this same requirement. Taurine can be found in meat and seafood. A deficiency in this amino acid can cause a condition of the heart muscle called cardiomyopathy.

Cardiomyopathy, if left untreated, can cause heart failure and even death. A lack of taurine in the diet can also lead to blindness. For these reasons, it is not in the best interest of your cat’s health to feed them dog food.

Cats can, however, be introduced to certain foods that would be beneficial to them and add some variety to their diet. One of my favorite treats for cats is blueberries. Blueberries are great antioxidants and contain Vitamin C, as well. I have often placed a handful of blueberries in the freezer for a short time and offer them as a healthy treat to my own five felines. Blueberries can also be mixed with a small amount of plain organic yogurt and frozen in an ice cube tray and given as a special treat.

Other fruits that can be made as a cool treat to cats include watermelon, cantaloupe and honey dew melons. Obviously, first remove all the seeds and then cut the melon pieces into bitesized cubes. Place them in the freezer for a few hours to firm the pieces up and offer as a cooling snack. Most cats do like this kind 52

of treat. These kinds of melons contain flavonoids, which are great antioxidants, along with vitamins A and C. Cat’s can be notorious to give some medications to, be it in the form of a liquid or a pill. I have often suggested to cat owners to add some low salt/ low sodium chicken broth or low sodium beef broth. It is easy enough to mix the liquid medication or crushed pills into this broth and offer it to your pet. Even if your cat does not require medication, it is always a pleasant treat to mix some broth in with their food. It adds moisture to their diet.

This is especially important in male cats as this will help reduce the incidence of urinary tract infections just by the simple addition of some water (filtered is best), or low sodium broth.

DO NOT give bouillon cubes to make their broth, they contain too much sodium.

As always, it is important to try these healthy snacks a little at a time since any abrupt change in diet can sometimes cause a soft stool or even diarrhea. Every cat is different. I can offer these snacks to my cats without any problem at all with regards to their stool consistency, but this may be different for you.

It is always best to discuss diet and snacks with your holistic veterinarian to make sure it fits into your pet’s health situation.
