words from the editors and publishers:
Upon receiving some items recently ordered from Amazon, it occurred to me that they really should try to implement a box return. Especially, when items often arrive one item at a time, using as many as ten or more boxes for one order. But, before I go any further, I want to say that we always support and buy locally first, however, when we are extremely busy Amazon comes to the rescue and there are countless items that Amazon carries that we haven’t been able to find locally. Obviously, the boxes can always be reused by the person who receives them for re-shipping and storage but when looking at the bigger picture, it seems that Amazon has created quite a “carbon footprint trail” literally. I did find several resources online that agreed that Amazon boxes and inner packing material is very easy to recycle. Upon further investigation I wanted to see if Amazon recognized that this is a problem and did find that Amazon has a “Customer Discussions Green 3 forum discussing Recycling Cardboard Shipping Boxes”. Let's work to go green Amazon!” The revalation was that I was not alone when it comes to the Amazon box dilemma. Maybe when Amazon starts to deliver using drones (which I read they were looking into, but can’t really confirm) they can eliminate shipping in boxes altogether? In this issue you’ll find new Fall Fashions in “theshopbydesign”, some affordable and some not so affordable. But don’t fret when looking at trending styles and upcoming fashions that you absolutely love but you know are completely out of your price range, because you can almost always find a really good look alike piece for much less money. I’m happy to say that some of my all-time favorite pieces in my wardrobe have come from thrift stores and along with some of my all-time favorite over the top purchases work together beautifully. In a recent article from “Regeneration Vermont” a new non-profit who is in the process of trying to wake up consumer and corporate dairy suppliers about the dangerous toxins in our dairy, including milk, ice cream, cheese, butter, yogurt and our drinking water.
the corn is “Non GMO” the added toxic chemicals sprayed on the corn is not considered. Do you think a cow dining on the toxic chemicals sprayed on the corn doesn’t trasmit to the final foods?
According to the report “the marketing wizards of Ben& Jerry’s and Cabot Creamery have done a brilliant job in portraying Vermont’s dairy lands as pristine pastures, where happy herds of dairy graze on lush green grass.” But behind the myth sits the real truth; From 1999-2012 Vermont dairy farms applied more than 2.5 million metachlor, atrazine and simazine to their cornfields. Although the corn is “GMO free” but it is drenched in pesiticdes and marketeted as “natural” “GMO-free” and healthy for children. All three of these chemicals are probable carcigens and endocrine disruptors. Vermont is one of three states ( New York and California are the others) that require farmers to report their pesticide, herbicide and fertilizer usage every year. So where does all that pesticides go? Into the ice cream and cheese marketing by Ben and Jerry’s , Cabots and others. Even though

percent of the product is cocoa, which means that much of the dark, chocolatey brown color of the product comes from yellow, red, and blue dye. “Keeping dyed foods away from children is not easy,” said CSPI deputy director of nutrition policy Jessica Almy. “The FDA could make an enormous difference for hundreds of thousands of children and their families by eliminating dyes altogether, or at least requiring a warning label.” Nabisco’s seasonal Winter Oreos, which have a red filling, have 31 mg of Red 40 per serving. And IBC Black Cherry soda, a brand owned by Dr Pepper Snapple Group, has 25 mg of dyes, a combination of Blue 1, Red 40, and Yellow 5.
Little Debbie Swiss Rolls Use Yellow, Red, and Blue Dyes to Make ‘Chocolate’ Cake. Little Debbie Swiss Rolls have a combined 32 milligrams of Yellow 5, Red 40, and Blue 1, per serving, according to new Food and Drug Administration data obtained and analyzed by the nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest. That level of artificial food dye is troubling, according to the group, since clinical trials have shown that modest percentages of children experience adverse behavioral reactions after consuming about that much. The primary ingredients in Little Debbie Swiss Rolls, manufactured by McKee Foods, are sugar, water, flour, and oil. Less than two 6
Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6 are the most commonly used food dyes. Besides triggering behavioral problems in children, some food dyes pose other health concerns. In 1990, the FDA determined that Red 3 was a thyroid carcinogen in animals and subsequently banned the dye for use in cosmetics and externallapplied drugs, as well as all uses of lakes (an insoluble form) of Red 3. The FDA still permits Red 3 dye in ingested drugs and foods. Blue 1 was highlighted by several members of an FDA Food Advisory Committee as being of specialconcernbecause it can cross the blood-brain barrier. Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, and Blue 1 also trigger allergic reactions such as hives in some people. “Numerous studies have tested artificial food dyes on children in amounts ranging from 25 to 35 milligrams and found that they triggered hyperactivity or other adverse behavior in some children,” said CSPI senior scientist Lisa Lefferts. Q
: How can I find a veterinarian that practices acupuncture on animals?
Q
VETERINARY ACUPUNCTURE
: I’ve recently found out that acupuncture is practiced on pets. Which pets exactly?
A
:
Acupuncture is the placement of tiny needles into specific predetermined locations, called acupuncture points, on the body for the purposes of healing. The word “acupuncture” is derived from the Latin “acus”, which means “needle” and “pungare”, which means, “to pierce”. Veterinary acupuncture in the Chinese literature is documented over 3,000 years ago. Many of these same principles are practiced, researched and taught in China and around the world today. The original animal that we know of that was treated with acupuncture in China was the horse. Today acupuncture is practiced on horses, dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, gerbils, chinchillas, pigs, sheep, goats, cows, ducks, various birds, and even exotic mammals.
Q
: What types of medical conditions or diseases can acupuncture help?
A
:
Acupuncture can benefit the following conditions: arthritis, allergies, asthma, bronchitis, dermatitis, hip dysplasia, degenerative joint disease, spondylosis, gastrointestinal issues (vomiting, diarrhea, colitis, inflammatory bowel disease, gastritis, gastroenteritis), cancer, seizures, kidney disease, liver disease, thyroid disease (hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism), musculoskeletal problems (sprains, strains, acute trauma, disc disease), urinary and fecal incontinence, pain management, urinary issues (cystitis, feline urologic syndrome, bladder stones) and much more. The World Health Organization recommends acupuncture as an effective treatment for over forty-two medical conditions, including allergies, respiratory conditions, gastrointestinal disorders, nervous system conditions, gynecological problems, disorders of the eyes, nose and throat, headaches, chronic pain associated with arthritis and degenerative joint disease, and as an adjunct in patients suffering from cancer and AIDS. www.livingwellmagazine.net
A
: First and foremost the individual that works on your pet must be a licensed veterinarian. Human acupuncturists should NOT practice acupuncture on animals. Additionally, you want to find a practitioner who is certified in veterinary acupuncture. This means that they went through all the additional education and standards set forth by certifying organizations such as The International Veterinary Acupuncture Society. I am certified by The International Veterinary Acupuncture Society. A certified veterinary acupuncturist can be found at The American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture web site, www.AAVA. org, The International Veterinary Acupuncture Society web site, www.IVAS.org, or The American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association web site, www.AHVMA.org.
Q
: How long does an animal acupuncture treatment take?
A
: An acupuncture treatment on a pet generally lasts
between ten and thirty minutes. The dry needles are placed in the appropriate locations as determined by the veterinary acupuncturist. The pet is allowed to walk around, sit or lie down during the treatment. Often the animal yawns as the process releases endorphins, which is one of the bodies’ natural relaxing chemicals. Many pets actually fall asleep during their treatment. The treatment is pleasant and basically uneventful. Initially, treatments are weekly or biweekly depending on the condition. As the situation improves and the pet responds, the intervals between treatments are increased. Many patients who have chronic arthritis may only need to be seen four or five times a year to maintain a level of comfort. Dr. Rose DiLeva is a 1987 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania’s school of Veterinary Medicine. She practices alternative and conventional veterinary medicine. Dr. DiLeva is a certified veterinary acupuncturist and a certified veterinary chiropractitioner. GMOs: To Eat or Not to Eat? Dr. Scott E. Rosenthal Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are organisms that have been modified through the scientific process of genetic engineering. Typically, it’s the process of taking some genetic information from one living thing and inserting into another. The use of genetic engineering (GE) produces desired effects such as making more resistant crops that produce greater yields. This may actually sound good considering the rising cost of food and the problem of hunger worldwide. But are genetically engineered foods safe to eat? What is the impact on your health? It’s a subject of great debate and more than a little spin. To explore the questions at hand, we must look at the research. According to the journal Nature, “People are positively swimming in information about GM technologies. Much of it is wrong—on both sides of the debate. But a lot of this incorrect information is sophisticated, backed by legitimate-sounding research and written with certitude. (With GM crops, a good gauge of a statement’s fallacy is the conviction with which it is delivered.)”1 The journal Science and Engineering Ethics also discusses the ensuing debate and sheds light on a threat posed by GM foods beyond the controversies arising from introducing foods with unnatural gene modifications to our food supply. It states: “There 1 Nature, Vol. 497, 2 May 2013 8
is a debate on the direct threat of genes used in the preparation of these new foods on human health, as they are not detectable in the body, but the real danger may come from PAGMF [pesticides associated with genetically modified foods].” Is it possible that we are debating the wrong way GM foods impact our health? As stated above, the real harm may not be from the modified food itself, but the amount of chemicals used in the farming of it. The majority of genetically engineered crops are designed for pesticide resistance. Should we be concerned that the top five biotech companies are also chemical companies who produce pesticides?2 It’s a complex issue that can’t be fully addressed in a single article. Therefore, I’ll look specifically at two questions that focus on food safety. First, does consuming pesticides have health risks? And second, do GM foods increase those risks? According to a study published in Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology: “There is a huge body of evidence on the relation between exposure to pesticides and elevated rate of chronic diseases such as different types of cancers, diabetes, neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson, Alzheimer, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), birth defects, and reproductive disorders.”3 This study was based on those living in farming communities subject to far greater exposure to pesticides 2 Science and Engineering Ethics (2005) 11. 137-149 3 Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology 268 (2013). 157-177 — continued on next page

than the average consumer. And in studies of people not living in areas where pesticides are sprayed heavily, increased risks of certain conditions such as a birth defect of the penis, ADHD and cancer were still found.4 Industry studies have been performed looking at the safety of a pesticide’s single active ingredient. But when looking at the complete mixture of substances contained in actual products used on the fields, greater levels of toxicity are revealed. It’s like saying cake is healthy for diabetics because eggs were found to be a nonissue. Once sugar, flour and other ingredients are factored in, a far different conclusion is made. Still, how does all of this play into evaluating the safety of GMO foods? Let’s look at one of the biggest GMO crops to answer. GMO soybeans have been found to have an equivalent composition to conventional non-GMO soybeans. Since soy products find their way into many of the foods you eat (soybean oil, soy lecithin and soy protein), this is good news. However, since most GMO crops are genetically modified to resist pesticides, GMO soybeans have substantially higher levels of pesticide residue than non-GMO soybeans.5
risk factors come into play. Lack of fruits and vegetables in the American diet kills and sickens more people than pesticides ever could. Yes, this gets confusing! To make it simple: Eat organically grown foods whenever possible. If not available, still eat your fruits and vegetables! The answer to the question whether GMOs are either to eat or not to eat would depend on who you ask, how you ask and what you ask! By seeing GMO crops as less of an issue regarding the scientific bending of nature and more as one that involves amplifying the impact of pesticide use on health, the best answer for your health may be clearer. Until they can genetically modify humans to resist pesticides in a similar manner, the smartest precaution may be avoidance.
There is one caveat to sharing this information with you. If eating organic produce is not possible and you avoid eating more fruits and vegetables due to a fear of pesticide residues, greater 4 http://nutritionfacts.org/video/are-organic-foods-healthier/ 5 http://nutritionfacts.org/video/are-gmos-safe-the-case-of-roundup-ready-soy/

TOP TEN WAYS TO HELP KIDS EAT HEALTHY 1.
Be a positive role model. If you’re practicing healthy habits, it’s a lot easier to convince children to do the same.
Get the whole family active. Plan times for everyone to get moving together. Take walks, ride bikes, go swimming, garden or just play hide-and-seek outside. Everyone will benefit from the exercise and the time together.
2.
3.
Limit TV, video game and computer time. These habits lead to a sedentary lifestyle and excessive snacking, which increase risks for obesity and cardiovascular disease.
4.
Encourage physical activities that children really enjoy. Every child is unique. Let children experiment with different activities until each finds something that he or she really loves doing. They’ll stick with it longer if they love it.
5.
Be supportive. Focus on the positive instead of the negative. Everyone likes to be praised for a job well done. Celebrate successes and help children and teens develop a good self image.
Set specific goals and limits, such as one hour of physical
6.
activity a day or two desserts per week other than fruit. When goals are too abstract or limits too restrictive, the chance for success decreases.
7.
Don’t reward children with food. Candy and snacks as a reward encourage bad habits. Find other ways to celebrate good behavior.
Make dinnertime a family time.
When everyone sits down together to eat, there’s less chance of children eating the wrong foods or snacking too much. Get the kids involved in cooking and planning meals. Everyone develops good eating habits together and the quality time with the family will be an added bonus.
8.
Make a game of reading food labels. The whole family will learn what’s good for their health and be more conscious of what they eat. It’s a habit that helps change behavior for a lifetime.
9.
Stay involved. Be an advocate for healthier children. Insist on good food choices at school. Make sure your children’s
healthcare providers are monitoring cardiovascular indicators like BMI, blood pressure and cholesterol. Contact public officials on matters of the heart. Make your voice heard.

What Is Fusion Energy And Why Are Environmentalists So Bullish On It?
uclear fusion may be the most promising energy source that most of us have never heard of. Scientists first discovered fusion as a potential energy source in the 1930’s and have been quietly working on it ever since. Only recently, given societal pressure to find alternatives to fossil fuels, has fusion started to capture the attention of the media and policymakers— and now researchers are hoping the process can become a key source of safe, clean, reliable energy in the near future. Nuclear fusion is the fusing of two atoms into one. Fusion is very different from fission, in which atoms are split in half. Although both emit energy, fusion emits much more. Fusion takes an immense amount of heat and pressure and is the reaction that happens inside of stars, including our own sun. The temperature at the center of the sun is around 15 million Kelvin (27 million degrees Fahrenheit)! Scientists have achieved temperatures of around 100 million degrees inside experimental fusion devices but have yet to make the process net energy positive. The issue with doing reactions at such high heats is that the heated substance cannot touch anything or the container will melt. Therefore, fusion reactions are done in a donut of floating plasma, suspended by magnetic fields. When compared to other energy sources, fusion energy seems like it might be our best bet in the long term. Compared to fossil fuels and renewable energy sources, fusion is wildly more efficient and no more dangerous. Fusion is three to four times more efficient even than nuclear fission, without the downsides such as the risk of nuclear meltdown or dirty bombs. While nuclear fission requires uranium to function, fusion reactors only require deuterium, which occurs naturally in seawater, and tritium, which can be produced through a reaction of deuterium and lithium. 12
These low raw material costs cause fusion to be considered a potential source of limitless energy. Due to the low radioactivity of fusion, even in the case of an explosion, radioactivity would be contained to the reactor site. Fusion reactors’ small input and extremely high output have made them a popular idea. So what are the drawbacks of nuclear fusion? Or is it the perfect energy source? Most critics of fusion energy point to the timeline as its greatest weakness. The majority of projections see 2050 as the first year fusion reactors could be commercially available. This is too late for fusion energy to solve our current energy crisis. Some environmentalists claim that funding for fusion energy could be better spent on renewable sources such as solar and hydro that give us clean energy now. Another concern with fusion is public opinion. People tend to be wary of anything nuclear, if only because of the incredible devastation of nuclear bombs. While nuclear fusion is far safer than fission, many activists in France, for example, are protesting all forms of nuclear energy. The biggest fusion energy project in the world is called the ITER which means “the way” in Latin. ITER is located in Southern France and funded by the European Union, the U.S., China, India, Korea, Russia and Japan. ITER will be a fusion reactor used for research and is currently under construction. Current plans are for ITER to be ready for the first test of plasma by 2025. The main other research on fusion energy is being done at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Though commercial fusion reactors are far from a reality, the abundant raw materials and high safety, paired with enormous energy output, make it an outstanding possibility for the future. CONTACT: ITER, www.iter.org.

Where Do The Vice Presidential Nominees, Tim Kaine And Mike Pence Stand On Environmental Issues?
Not surprisingly given the current political climate, the respective Vice Presidential candidates differ on most of the issues, including their policies on the environment and energy.
On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton’s VP choice Tim Kaine has opposed big oil companies since his career as Virginia State Senator. He first endorsed a “25% renewables by 2025” goal back in 2007, and has continued his staunch support ever since. He has been a champion of diversifying America’s energy portfolio. “We’re not going to drill our way out of the long-term energy crisis facing this nation and the world... we can’t keep relying on oil,” said Kaine back in 2008. He reinforced this position again in his 2012 Senate race by arguing against tax subsidies for major oil companies.
As far as environmental protection, he has not shown much of a track record in support or against. In May of 2013, he did vote affirmatively on a bill to protect ocean, coastal and Great Lakes ecosystems. The League of Conservation Voters (LCV), which puts out an annual national environmental scorecard for politicians, has attributed a 91 percent lifetime score to Kaine, clearly naming him as one of our nation’s leading politicians. More recently, in late 2015, Kaine voted against a bill that attacked Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) carbon pollution limits. Of course, a Republican dominated Congress passed the bill anyway, although President Obama quickly vetoed it to maintain stricter limits on carbon pollution.
cross the aisle, Donald Trump’s VP selection, Mike Pence, lacks A any sort of environmental agenda in his political career. The LCV gives him a lifetime score of only four percent, meaning he is no friend of the environment. Pence, who served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2001-2013 when he assumed the Indiana governorship, voted against a “Cash for Clunkers” recycling
program in 2009 and also voted no on a bill improving public transportation in 2008. Meanwhile, he voted affirmatively for deauthorizing critical habitat zones and approving forest thinning projects in 2005 and 2003, respectively.
As for energy policy, Pence supported the “25% renewable energy...” goal in 2007 like his opponent Kaine. However, since then, he has supported offshore drilling, opposed EPA regulation of greenhouse gases and voted without any environmental conscience. He also voted against incentives for alternative fuels, for the construction of new oil refineries, and against criminalizing oil cartels such as OPEC.
“I think the science is very mixed on the subject of global warming,” Pence stated in 2009. His record on the environment since then reflects his continued skepticism toward environmental protection efforts.
For environmentalists, Kaine is the obvious choice over Pence, which is no surprise given the Presidential candidates who selected each of them as running mates. While Hillary Clinton may have focused more attention on other political issues over her career, she has continuously supported environmental protection and the transition away from fossil fuels, while Donald Trump has fought environmental restrictions on his ability to operate his real estate empire and recently told reporters he would consider reneging on U.S. commitments to reduce greenhouse gases made at the recent Paris climate summit.

Arthritis By The Numbers
Get to know arthritis by the numbers. You’ll be surprised. Arthritis is all around us, yet its impact on people, employers and the country is far greater, more serious and costly than most people realize.
People with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis –just two kinds of arthritis – miss a combined of 172 million workdays every year. Economic Impact Arthritis and other non-traumatic joint disorders are among the five most costly conditions among adults 18 and older.
Arthritis Prevalence More than 50 million adults have doctor-diagnosed arthritis. That’s 1 in 5 people over age 18. Almost 300,000 babies and children have arthritis or a rheumatic condition.
Every year, people with arthritis and other rheumatic conditions give up potential income (called “lost wages”) due to injury or illness.
That’s 1 in 250 children.
Arthritis and related conditions account for $156 billion annually in lost wages and medical expenses.
Number of people expected to have doctor-diagnosed arthritis by the year 2030: 67 million.
44 million outpatient visits
Arthritis Disability Arthritis is the nation’s No. 1 cause of disability. Economic Cost of Arthritis
Nearly 1 million hospitalizations The nearly 300,000 children with juvenile arthritis and rheumatic conditions make an estimated 621,ooo health care profession visits every year.
Employment Impact Working-age men and women (ages 18 to 64) with arthritis were less likely to be employed than those of the same age without arthritis.
Comorbidities (present simultaneously in a patient)
One-third of working-age people with arthritis have limitations in their ability to work, the type of work they can do or whether they can work part time or full time.
57 percent of adults with heart disease have arthritis.
People with arthritis or a rheumatic condition lose more workdays every year due to illness or injury than adults with any other medical condition.
36 percent of adults who are obese have arthritis.
14
Among adults with arthritis, nearly half (47 percent) have at least one other disease or condition.
52 percent of adults with diabetes have arthritis. 44 percent of adults with high blood pressure have arthritis.
One-third of adults with arthritis age 45 and older have either anxiety or depression.

But the risk of arthritis does increase with age. Almost half of adults 65 years old or older have arthritis. Doctor-diagnosed arthritis is more common in women (26 percent) than in men (18 percent). In some types, such as rheumatoid arthritis, women far outnumber men. Arthritis has a greater impact on minorities. Blacks, Hispanics, Asians and other minorities populations in the U.S. have lower rates of arthritis compared to white population. However, they experience greater severity of pain and more work and daily activity limitations than whites.

Senescent adjective 1. growing old; aging. 2. Cell Biology. (of a cell) no longer capable of dividing but still alive and metabolically active. 3. aging process by senescent cells—living cells that have stopped reproducing due to age or damage. Image: shows a normal joint and the same joint with Osteoarthritis.
Study Finds A Link Between Osteoarthritis And Senescent Cells Researchers have uncovered evidence that cellular senescence whereby cells stop dividing - is a cause of osteoarthritis, and they suggest targeting these cells could offer an encouraging way to prevent or treat the condition. Researchers said “that targeting senescent cells may have the potential to prevent or treat osteoarthritis.” Study co-author Dr. James Kirkland, director of the Robert and Arlene Kogod Center on Aging at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and colleagues publish their findings in The Journals of Gerontology, Series A: Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences. Osteoarthritis (OA), also known as degenerative joint disease, is a condition in which cartilage - the tissue that protects the end of each bone in a joint - wears away, causing the underlying bones to rub together. This can cause pain, swelling, and poor joint movement. As the condition worsens, the bones may lose shape. Additionally, growths called bone spurs may arise, and bits of bone and cartilage can break off and float around the space in the joint. This can trigger an inflammatory response that exacerbates pain, as well as cartilage and bone damage. OA is the most common form of arthritis in the United States, affecting around 27 million American adults. While the condition can arise in all age groups, it is most common among people aged 65 and older. There is no cure for OA, only therapies that can help manage symptoms. These include pain and anti-inflammatory medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and corticosteroids. In some cases, joint surgery may be required. Now, Dr. Kirkland and colleagues said their findings may bring us closer to much-needed prevention and treatment strategies for OA. 16
www.livingwellmagazine.net
Senescent cell injection led to OA-like symptoms in mice: The precise causes of OA are unclear, though previous studies have suggested cellular senescence might be involved. Cellular senescence is the process by which cells stop dividing. Senescent cells accumulate with age and can cause severe damage to tissues and organs, contributing to a number of age-related diseases. For their study, Dr. Kirkland and colleagues set out to determine whether cellular senescence has a causal link with OA - an association they say previous studies have yet to establish. The team used a senescent cell transplantation model. This involved taking both senescent and non-senescent cells from the ear cartilage of mice, before injecting these cells into the rodents’ knee joints. Over a 10-day period, the researchers tracked the injected cells using bioluminescence and fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. The researchers found that the buildup of senescent cells around the knee joints of mice caused them to experience a number of symptoms and characteristics of OA, including leg pain, cartilage damage, and impaired mobility. No outcomes occurred as a result of injection with nonsenescent cells, the researchers report. Dr. James Kirkland said “We believe that targeting senescent cells could be a promising way to prevent or alleviate age-related osteoarthritis. While there is more work to be done, these findings are a critical step toward that goal. Osteoarthritis has previously been associated with the accumulation of senescent cells in or near the joints, however, this is the first time there has been evidence of a causal link. These findings, might provide evidence of a causal link between cellular senescence and OA, and which may open the door to new ways to delay, prevent, or treat OA”. September 2016

Perhaps the biggest factor in maintaining a sense of well-being as we age lies in having successful relationships with people with whom we can interact on a regular basis. Good conversation stimulates mental alertness; the sense of feeling connected and the security that comes with loving and being loved by others plays an irreplaceable role in the pursuit of aging gracefully, just as it does at any other stage of life. The presence of strong social connections not only impacts the mental status of aging individuals, but actually strengthens the immune system, as do other attributes such as the ability to cope well with stress and the propensity to look for the silver lining within life’s challenges. Clearly, many of the ingredients to the process of aging well are within our control. We can’t control genetics, but we can control our diets, exercise patterns, social circles, and attitudes. With more people turning 65 in our society than at any other time in history, the goal of aging well not only serves the individual, but greatly impacts society. Courtesy of CarpeVita Home Care

Are Your Vitamins And Supplements Safe and Right For You? Melissa Crispel Consumer Reports recently stated, “In 2015 Americans spent over $35 Billion on dietary supplements.” But did you know that supplement manufacturers aren’t required to prove to the Food and Drug Administration that their products are effective, or even safe, before putting them on the market? As a clinical nutritionist, it is my mission to empower people to make educated choices that will enhance, not compromise, their health. If you are using, or considering using, vitamins and supplements, it will be helpful to consider these important guidelines:
1. Do I need a supplement? The answer for the majority of the population is “Absolutely, beyond a shadow of doubt, YES!” There’s growing belief that our food sourcing is so nutrient depleted, that even if we are eating perfectly clean and balanced, we just can’t eat enough to receive the appropriate amount of vitamins and minerals. Why not know for sure? Taking inventory of your current health status will reveal the deficiencies requiring support. Functional blood tests are a powerful tool for assessing your micronutrient status, cardiovascular health, metabolic risk, inflammation, genetic predisposition, and hormone health— essentially all of the components that make up your total health picture. 2. What should I take and how much? Nutritional supplementation and dosing should not be taken lightly. Incorrectly combining supplements with prescription medications can have disastrous consequences. Even vitamin D (which is actually a hormone) can be toxic if your level is too high. Again, appropriate blood testing can help determine what your body needs to reach optimal performance. Before introducing any new product, consult with a professional to help navigate your needs. 18

3. Are you getting what you pay for? Without official regulation of supplements, it’s important to become an educated label investigator! Seek to choose a product with high-quality ingredients and the appropriate amount of nutrients. Fulldisclosure labels, listing ALL ingredients, are a good indication that there’s nothing to hide. Look for a company that follows current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs); has no proprietary blends; uses hypoallergenic ingredients combined with the needed cofactors, protectors, and transporters to produce the most bioavailable nutritional supplements.
4. Aren’t all supplements the same? No way–not ever! Unless you’re purchasing from a reputable, licensed healthcare provider such as First State Health & Wellness, your supplements aren’t required to successfully pass any 3rd party testing for: identity; microbiological quality; potency; chemical solvent residue (PCBs & dioxins); or heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium). Even if you are purchasing from a provider, not all companies agree to this voluntary process. Quality of ingredients is paramount—they should not only be chemical free, but should contain nutrients that are easily absorbed by our bodies. For example: Not all vitamin C products are the same. High quality, food sourced vitamin C acts as a powerful antioxidant to help balance free radical production and the
body’s ability to detoxify from them. However, synthetic vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a blend of fermenting corn sugar (can you say GMO?!) and acetone (yes, nail polish remover). Without any naturally occurring ingredients, this artificial combination lacks antioxidant properties. The same goes for multi vitamins–seek to avoid sugars and magnesium stearate.
The bottom line is to see a nutrition professional, such as a clinical nutritionist, who has specific education and experience in functional diagnostics and supplementation. We are here to support you!

pumpkin braised short ribs M
In this the final chapter of her bestselling Kosher by Design cookbook series, Susie Fishbein shares fresh new recipes retained from her 15-year culinary journey. Along with many touching stories collected from her cooking demos, Susie also shares enticingly delicious recipes learned from the great chefs she encountered in Italy, France, Mexico, Israel, and across North America. The splendid cookbook offers magnificent full-color photos by John Uher to accompany each recipe. It is seasoned with entertaining narratives and finely spiced recipes such as Coconut Lime Pargiyot Skewers, Tuna Ceviche Tostados, Moroccan Harira Soup, Herbed Halibut & White Beans, Mujadara, Korean Short Ribs, and Tuscan Square Roast. 20

If autumn had a celebrity dish, this would be it. These short ribs will be the reason your succah or Thanksgiving table is the place to be. The long, slow cooking time yields rich, succulent results. If the ribs don’t come tied, you can use kitchen twine or silicone bands. It’s just for prettier presentation so that they don’t fall off the bone. ½ cup all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon ground sage ½ teaspoon fine sea salt ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 6 pounds (10-12 large ribs, each 4 x 2 inches) thick short ribs, each tied 2 tablespoons canola oil 1 onion, peeled, cut into ½-inch dice 24 ounces (2 [12-ounce] bottles) pumpkin ale or other beer 1½ cups or 1 (15-ounce) can canned pure pumpkin, NOT pumpkin pie filling 2 tablespoons tomato paste 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 2 tablespoons whole grain mustard 2 tablespoons seasoned rice vinegar 2 tablespoons dark molasses
Heat a large Dutch oven over high heat for 3 minutes. Add the canola oil; wait a minute or two, until the pan is very hot and almost smoking. Place the short ribs into the pan; sear until they are nicely browned on all three meaty sides. You will have to sear the meat in batches. Do not crowd the pot. Be patient; allow 4-5 minutes per side. When the ribs are nicely browned, transfer them to a plate to rest. Reduce heat to medium; add the onion. Stir with a wooden spoon, scraping up all the browned bits in the pan. Cook 3-4 minutes, until the onion just starts to soften. Add 12 ounces of beer. Stir. Add the pumpkin. Stir in the tomato paste, Dijon mustard, whole grain mustard, vinegar, and molasses. Mix well. Bring sauce to a boil. Return ribs to the pot. Stand them up if needed to fit all. Add the remaining 12 ounces of beer to almost cover the ribs. Add as much of the chopped kale as fits. Cover the pot. Simmer on low for 3 hours. Transfer the ribs to a large platter. Spoon lots of braising juices over the ribs.

harissa maple roasted parsnips P
yields 4-6 servings
Hey, sriracha, say hello to the newest member at the hot sauce party! Harissa is a North African paste, with ingredients that vary between countries and regions. It is available online and in some markets, and it’s great on eggs and meats, in soups, as a cracker dip, and so much more. While this recipe is not traditional, as it does not include the standard dried smoked chilies, you get the reminiscent heat from the cayenne.
Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line 2 baking sheets or jellyroll pans with parchment paper. Set aside. Cut each parsnip in half widthwise, then cut each half into quarters or halves, depending on how thick, to make evenly sized 2-3-inch sticks.
10 small-medium parsnips, peeled ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
In a medium bowl, combine olive oil, maple syrup, tomato paste, lemon juice, garlic, cumin, cayenne, coriander, and salt. Using gloved hands, add the parsnips; toss to coat.
3 tablespoons real maple syrup (not pancake syrup) 1 tablespoon tomato paste 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 clove fresh garlic, minced
Transfer to prepared baking sheets, leaving room between parsnips. Roast, uncovered, for 35 minutes, rotating the pans halfway through the cooking time. Immediately remove from the parchment so the drippings on the paper don’t harden.
1½ teaspoons cumin ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper ¼ teaspoon ground coriander ¼ teaspoon salt 22

nutella peanut butter cheesecake Nutella Crust 1 cup Nutella 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar 1 large egg ½ cup plus 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour ¼ teaspoon Maldon salt, coarse sea salt, or kosher salt Cheesecake Filling 4 (8-ounce) blocks cream cheese, at room temperature 1 cup sugar 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 4 large eggs ½ cup creamy peanut butter ½ cup Nutella
Preheat the oven to 325°F. Lightly coat a 9-inch springform pan with nonstick cooking spray, set aside. Prepare the crust: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat 1 cup Nutella, brown sugar, egg, flour, and salt together for 1-2 minutes to form a smooth dough. Press dough into the bottom of prepared pan. Bake for 8 minutes. Set aside to cool. Prepare the filling: In a clean mixing bowl, beat cream cheese and sugar together until smooth. Add in vanilla; add one egg at a time, mixing between each until just combined. Don’t over-mix. Scrape down the sides and bottom of bowl during mixing. Remove 2½ cups batter to a medium bowl. Set aside. Add the peanut butter to the remaining batter. Beat until smooth. Pour peanut butter mixture over cookie base. Using a small offset spatula, smooth the batter. No need to wash the bowl or beater. Pour the reserved batter back into the mixer bowl. Add ½ cup Nutella; beat until smooth. Pour over the peanut butter layer; use a small, clean offset spatula to smooth into an even layer. Bake for 55-60 minutes, until center is almost set. Remove from oven and allow to cool. Prepare the glaze: Microwave ½ cup Nutella for 30 seconds. Spread glaze in an even layer over the center of the cake. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours before serving. Make sure you cut all the way to the bottom of the cookie crust; a serrated knife will help.

HANDS ON HEALTH by: Ann Wilkinson P.T.M.S,
Q:
I wake every morning with pain in my low back. If I awake and change beds or go to the couch I feel much better. Can you tell me why?
A:
Your mattress would be the first thing most people would consider however you are giving some hints that there may be other factors. Mattresses for the most part are simple. Heavier rounded individuals may like firmer, bony people need cushion. If your partner has the opposite type there are beds with custom adjustments on each side. Sometimes you may need to switch the head to the bottom, switch sides of the bed. Movement being a relief is a key note for a homeopathic remedy like “rhus tox”. If your sacrum is your key lesion laying on your stomach will make you worse. Magnesium deficiency creates many symptoms for example muscular stiffness. Too much caffeine and sugar can also cause muscular overreactions to normal activity. Sleeping posture should consist of the mattress that accommodates your body type. The body should rest flat with the subtle curve in the low back supported with a small pillow or roll (I like an ace wrap for a horse) and the not so subtle curve in the neck needs to be supported. These curves need support no matter what position you lie in whether on back, sides or stomach. The right size pillow is hard to find. Many times kid size, pediatric or stuff animals work best. Regular pillow are to often too big and not so easily able to be shaped into the perfect nook of the neck or back. Sleeping meds can make you sleep unnaturally deep not allowing you to change positions and cause stiffness as well. Try to adapt habits that create great sleeping with proper support.
A:
The reaction you had is one I see quite often. The illusion that there is no pain when indeed there is pain can be dangerous. As an indicator of your limits, pain can be the precise reaction that your body needs to keep you from getting into more trouble. When that warning sign is taken away there is no feedback to prevent you from greater injury. There are times when the nerve itself gets irritated by the medicine and or the needle itself. The lbs per square inch of pressure exerted by a needle is not kind to human tissue especially nerves.
Most times injections can be helpful in determining what the structure is that is actually producing the pain; be it a ligament,a trigger point, a disc, a joint capsule or nerve involvement. A cure though, is actually a correction of the problem. Unless the injection wipes out a trigger point or offers anti-inflammatory applications or spasm reduction so that an adjustment can be made. I have not seen where an injection actually reduces a disc or an adhesion or releases a fascial restriction. These are the most frequent causes of back pain. There are many people who actually have a fairly simple trigger point or fascial involvement or a simple disc bulge that could respond to very specific mechanical manipulations, however, they are being unnecessarily pharmaceutically insulted or injected. These invasive procedures make them vulnerable and exposed to organisms otherwise not in their environment. People need to know more about non-invasive options.
Q:
I have been through the gambit of
traditional treatments for my back and neck pain, the latest being injections. The first gave me the sense I had no pain for two full weeks, the second no change, the third left me with more pain than I had before the first injection. I cannot have anymore injections and surgery is all I am being offered although at the moment I am not considering that option. I have had such mixed reaction to the injections, is this indicative of anything osteopathically? 26

Recovering From Past Difficulties To Move Forward Joe White
What you tolerate is what will exist in your life. You must upgrade your standards by choosing what you really want.
Let’s be honest. Life can be brutal. Many of us have dealt with some type life trauma. Below are recommendations to help you move forward. Bring them into your heart and soul and allow your breakthrough to happen.
All That You Need Is Within You Now. Read it again. Now read it again. It does not say “All that you want... “ but rather “All that you need…” You are born in abundance and it is time you live in abundance.
At times of great trauma and hurt we develop some sort of self -protection mechanism to deal with these situation. When we feel threatened or unsafe, we look for protection. Perhaps we shut down or withdraw. Others will find distractions or try to block it out. Regardless of what you did to protect yourself, the truth is that it’s now in the past.
Yes, not getting what you want may hurt; but what you need is never in play . It is embedded in your soul, in your DNA.
The past may still hurt but we don’t need to protect ourselves from it. Acknowledge the hurt and then let it go.
Everything in your life has led you to this moment, and this could be the moment where your life changes. Take back control of your life.
Life Happens For Us Not To Us.
Your Past Does Not Equal Your Future. It doesn’t matter how many times you have failed in the past. Right now is a new moment. There are always new opportunities.
Until next month, I wish you love and passion.
This is not positive thinking mumbo jumbo. Everything in nature serves a part of nature. The same is true for humans. Even our worst moments serve us. We don’t always see it at first, but in time it will become more clear. We must find the gift. It is there. It is always there, but it is up to us to find it. Take that gift and share it. Share it with yourself, share it with others. Seek it and embrace it. You Are More Than Your Past and Problems. When you define yourself by your past you lose who you really are. You must disassociate yourself from your past expectations, from what you think life should be and live in the now.

LIVING YOUR BALANCE Karen Verna Carlson
“What is balance? What is a sense of equanimity? We’d all like to know that. The basic guideline is to see what’s too tight for you and what’s too loose for you, and you’ll find your own middle way.”
-Pema Chodron, The Wisdom of No Escape: and the Path of Loving-Kindness (Shambala Press, Boston, 1991)
September transitions usually challenge my equilibrium, which in turn inspires renewed interest in fostering skills to enhance balance. This year I’m benefitting from guidance by Pema Chodron, an American Buddhist nun and director of a Buddhist monastery in Nova Scotia for Western men and women. She shares “nine different helpful hints on how…to keep your mind from going to one extreme or another” in her book cited above. These are suggestions for finding your balance and living your balance in an ever changing world.
Often my restless mind wanders after five or six counts, so another hint from Chodron becomes helpful. “The second [hint] is something that tends to be an attitude and an experience that evolves: you are not drawn off by every sound, not distracted by every sight, not completely captured by every movement of your mind. You are able to prolong that sense of sitting in the present moment, being fully, just breathing.”
Keep It Simple
Four of the hints are strategies—tasks and attitudes—for resting my busy mind. The simplest process is to engage classical breathwork to give my overly active mind something to focus on. I lovingly and gently begin following my breath in and following my breath out, counting each set on the exhale until I reach nine, and then starting again with one on the next exhale, inhale, two on the next exhale, inhale, and so on up to nine.
The third hint for boosting balance “has to do with taking a naïve attitude, a childlike attitude toward [breathwork], keeping it very simple.” Chodron humorously points out, “Sometimes we’re like a drill sergeant, sometimes we’re like mashed potatoes. Basically, once we have some sort of joyful curiosity about the whole thing, it’s simply all information, gathering the information we need to find our own balance….When your mind wanders off, without making any big deal whatsoever, without being militant or judgmental, just simply come back to your breath.”
Chodron reminds us that focusing on breath allows us to be 25% aware of our surroundings. “Even though there are colors and sounds and other people, even though your ears and your nose and your mouth and your tactile senses still exist and none of them goes away, nevertheless…you put the main part of your attention…onto the breath.”
Resting my mind is difficult. My mind is a good friend and an endless source of entertainment. However, if I maintain no boundaries on its activity it quickly wobbles out of equilibrium, and results in miserable consequences such as worry, tangled complications, misunderstandings, irrational indignation, unfounded suspicions, etc. Chodron’s fourth suggestion is to

practice ALLOWING myself to settle down, to LET my mind calm down. “You find,” she explains, “that things are somewhat simple and straightforward and there are no 3-D movies going on. Then try to catch each flicker of thought, the tiniest flickers of thought. In your practice, you’ll know when you are feeling settled like that and when you could try practicing that way.”

Develop Friendliness
• Short-Term Rehabilitation
The fifth hint is another attitude strategy— friendliness. “It is simply a process of seeing what is, noticing that, accepting that, and then going on with life, which, in terms of the technique, is coming back to the simplicity of now-ness, the simplicity of the out-breath. Named “taming the mind,” the fifth suggestion for balance “teaches…developing a nonaggressive attitude to whatever occurs in your mind. It teaches that meditation is not considering yourself an obstacle to yourself; in fact, it’s quite the opposite.”
• Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapies
Decades of breathwork has not eliminated my negativity spawned in childhood and unconsciously self-reinforced. But practice, albeit sporadic and unsatisfying at times, has reduced that negativity at least 40%. Suggestions six and seven deal with negative thoughts or attitudes by cultivating nonaggression and a good relationship with ourselves. Life Is Precious & Uncertain “You can actually talk to yourself about how precious our human life is and how uncertain the length of it is, and realize that it’s a rare and precious opportunity to be able to make friends with yourself so completely and thoroughly,” states Chodron. “You can also realize that, at a time like this, when there’s so much chaos and crisis and suffering in the world, we are actually needed. Individuals who are willing to wake up and make friends with themselves are going to be very beneficial, because they can work with others, they can hear what people are saying to them, and they can come from the heart and be of use.”

about that person or that thing you want so much—then the instruction, interestingly enough, is to flash back to your sense of body, emphasize your posture….Just resettle and have this sense of mindfulness of body. Just emphasize feeling your hands on your thighs and feeling your bottom on the cushion. You could even mentally go through your whole body from the top of your head all the way down. Come into your body completely to ground yourself. Wake Yourself Up “The antidote for ignorance or drowsiness is connecting with spaciousness…a sense of big space to wake yourself up, brighten things up.” Chodron advises to “…emphasize the windy, airy, fresh quality of the breath as it goes out, which helps you connect with freshness and spaciousness.”
which you discover how to find your own balance: how to relax when you find yourself being too rigid; how to become more elegant and precise when you find yourself being too casual…. No one else can tell you. You just have to find out for yourself.”
So my September intention to stay on an even keel has produced added benefits of creating a generally better relationship with myself, and consequently with others, a fresh start when I feel gnarly, an ongoing adventure of self-discovery, more gentleness, better discernment, faster recovery from imbalance, and more humor—big payoffs for a few daily breathwork sessions.
Strategy number eight is called “one-pointedness.” It has two parts. The first is the notion of a fresh start. “If your mind is all caught up and driving you crazy, you can just stop practicing altogether for a while….Keep your posture, so you don’t become too loose, but on the other hand let your mind relax and just think about things or look out. Relax, and then start fresh….The second part…is realizing that you’re not a victim of anything, and neither are you a patient that some doctor has to cure. You’re actually a sane, healthy, decent, basically good person, and you can find your own balance. This sense of fresh start can be applied… throughout your whole life….There are ways of doing what you want to do and ways of being who you want to be. You don’t have to feel like a victim of your own mind. Not too Tight or too Loose “The last of the nine ways is called ‘resting evenly’ or ‘absorption’…. and stresses the basic attitude…about developing a thoroughly good friendship with oneself,” explains Chodron. “Learning to be not too tight and not too loose is an individual journey through

What About Money? Suzanne Eder
“But I need money!” This objection has, perhaps more than any other, squelched countless dreams and visions of an awake, inspired and fulfilling life. I’m always slightly amused when a client says that to me as we explore bringing their dreams to life, as if I’d never thought of it. Believe me, I have thought of it. So let’s be very clear: I require money. You require money. Everyone requires money. (Unless, of course, they’re living totally off the grid, in which case they probably wouldn’t be reading this article, anyway.)
consciousness of abundance, how is that requirement met?” We’re tired of the anxiety and struggle over money that we experience within a consciousness of scarcity, but how do we make the shift to that shiny new consciousness of abundance? By being very clear that the true source of all of our good, including money and abundance in any form, is Pure Creativity. God. Love. The Quantum Field. The Divine. The Universe. Spirit. Source. Whatever you call the Supreme Intelligence or Loving Force which created Life , the Universe itself and everything in it. This limitless Source of all our good is infinitely abundant.
I use the word “require” quite intentionally, because the word “need” often has more than a tinge of desperation in it. As in… needy. As in…I don’t have enough. As in…if I don’t get it NOW, very bad things will happen.
Things we normally consider the source of our prosperity, such as jobs and clients and investments, are actually channels through which Universal abundance flows to us. They come and go, as do all things in the physical world, so any one of them can appear to limit our prosperity when it no longer exists. But that’s only because we confuse the channel with the Source.
I’ve learned, on my own quest to develop a genuine consciousness of abundance, that one of the most loving things I can do is to consciously avoid anything that triggers a feeling of desperation in me, as the word “need” sometimes can. For me the word “require” is clear and straightforward, and presumes that the requirement will be met. I like that.
If you’re spiritually-minded – and I trust that you are, or you wouldn’t be reading my column - this is not new news. It wasn’t for me, either. Yet it’s taken me a while to actually grasp the implications of it, and to act in confidence on them.
So…we require money. The question becomes, “In a 32
I’m reminded of one of my favorite episodes of Seinfeld, in which Jerry had reserved a rental car for one of his out-of-town gigs. As he stepped to the counter to pick up the keys for the car, the agent

told him there were no cars available. He pointed out that he had made a reservation, and accused the company of not knowing how to take reservations. The agent assured him, in a tone dripping with contempt, that they did indeed know how to take reservations. Jerry replied that while they might know how to take a reservation, but they didn’t don’t know how to hold a reservation.

That was my challenge: I didn’t know how to hold onto the understanding that God is the Source of all of my good, including money. I didn’t know how to anchor into that truth, especially when I was afraid. I didn’t know how to strengthen and stabilize my burgeoning abundance consciousness.

Developing a genuine consciousness of abundance requires us to, again and again, recognize when we’re thinking or acting from the old paradigm of scarcity, make a conscious choice to suspend what we’re doing, take a deep breath (or two or three), remind ourselves that God is the Source of all of our good - and then ask ourselves, “If I were living from the truth of an abundant universe, how would I be thinking and acting?”

Here’s an example of how these questions can be helpful. Let’s consider one of the stickier money challenges we may face in making financial decisions: what to do about debt. If we have access to credit, should we use it? If we already have debt, should we put our dreams on hold until it’s paid off? Those choices are, of course, very personal ones. Depending on your current financial situation and your mindset about money and abundance, taking advantage of available credit could be the most loving choice you could make...or not. So I’m not here to give you rules to follow. (I’ve never been a fan of rules.) But what I can offer with this example is a new way to think about debt if you’re committed to shifting from a consciousness of scarcity to one of abundance, and you’re wobbling a bit between the two. In our culture, for the most part, debt is seen as “bad.” I’ve worked with many clients who are deeply ashamed of the amount of debt they are carrying. The shame depletes and paralyzes them. Yet creating and living an abundant, fulfilling life cannot be done in a consciousness of judgment and shame. It can only be done by opening ourselves, more and more, to love and acceptance.

As I’ve grappled with whether debt is “good” or “bad” for me, I asked myself the two questions offered above. First I considered how I would be thinking and acting if I were living from an abundance consciousness. — continued on next page

I allowed myself to imagine being in an enlightened society, living fully in the truth that all good flows from the infinite abundance of God. At that level of consciousness, there would be no need to borrow because all requirements would always be abundantly fulfilled. There might not even be a need for money at all. But if money was in circulation, it would flow freely and the receiving and giving of it would not arise from a sense of lack or obligation. In that enlightened state, I would not be in debt because debt as we know it would not exist. So it seemed that having debt was taking me away from the abundance consciousness I was cultivating. Which brought me to the second question: How could I could love myself from where I was in that moment – with debt – to where I was going – free of debt? With the question focused on how I might love myself forward, I was able to create a mindset that supported me in doing just that. Holding a clear intention to move forward with love and acceptance, I understood that debt is not inherently bad or wrong. Debt only becomes wrong in our misunderstanding and judgment of it. When we look at the essential function of debt, without judgment, we see that it is a temporary channel through which money can flow to people. The less we judge ourselves for having debt, the more energy we have for getting out of it. And it is our very intention to shift from a consciousness of scarcity to a consciousness of abundance that makes the debt channel a temporary one. As we’re making that shift from one level of consciousness to the next, the best relationship we can have with debt is to actually appreciate it – yes, to appreciate it as having been a channel through which money was made available for our use. In appreciating that we have been given access to money through this channel, we lift our vibration far above that of judgment or shame. Appreciation expands us, judgment confines us. Yet if we only appreciate the money to which we’ve gained access through debt, without also cultivating a new consciousness of abundance, we might forget that God is the abundant Source of all our good, including money. We might confuse the channel with the source, and keep relying on debt.
to God – if we hadn’t, first, suspended all judgment of ourselves. God is Love, and judging is the opposite of loving. We can’t hear the voice of the Divine when we’re shrouded in shame. Exploring ways to talk and listen to God is, of course, intensely personal. It’s also a subject far beyond the scope of a single article. But I’d like to offer a prayer that I’ve adapted from the delightful teachings of Tosha Silver, author of Outrageous Openness and Change Me Prayers. My hope is that it will stir within you a renewed sense that you are worthy of financial abundance – and that you are not alone in creating it. If it speaks to you, read it every day for a while until you start to feel more deeply at peace and supported in moving forward. Divine Beloved, I know that I am meant to be of service in this world and I know that you want me to be fully supported in living a life of freedom, joy and loving service. Please orchestrate this outcome with ease and Grace, and guide me clearly with respect to any actions I need to take. Bless me with the ability to recognize opportunities that You have arranged for me. Free me from all self-judgment so that I may be a clear channel for Your Love, Wisdom and Abundance to flow through me. This is in Your hands, where it belongs, and I thank you from my heart for taking care of it. Whether you resonate with this prayer or not, know that the essential elements of cultivating a true abundance consciousness are these: releasing all judgment of yourself for whatever your current circumstances are, appreciating the good already present in your life, and cultivating an ever-deepening connection with Source for support and guidance in moving forward. You may need to apply these elements, again and again, until you anchor into the new consciousness. It will be well worth the practice. The good news is, those elements are all within you, now. Welcome, abundance.
I know what you’re thinking – didn’t we just come full circle? How do we cultivate an abundance consciousness? By going to the Source. By connecting with our Inner Creative Genius. By talking to God. By understanding that we are worthy of abundant financial support and that, in the limitless Divine Presence or Quantum Field of which we are a seamless part, all possibilities exist and all needs can be met. By making a clear request of this Presence for the abundance that is ours by Divine right and then listening to our own Divine inner voice for guidance. And we couldn’t have gotten here – to a place of being able to talk 34

No Heat Needed for Ultrasonic Dryers with Good Vibrations:
Scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee are changing the way Americans do laundry—using vibrations instead of heat to dry their clothes. The new technology, called the ultrasonic clothes dryer, is expected to dry clothes in half the time and use 70% less energy than today’s products, saving American consumers money on their energy bills. With support from the Energy Department’s Building Technologies Office, ORNL and GE Appliances are in the process of expanding the technology to a press dryer and clothes dryer drum within the next five months.
Nearly 80% of U.S. households have clothes dryers. Combined, they consume 4% of all residential electricity use, and collectively cost Americans nearly $9 billion per year on their utility bills. This is because they rely on an inefficient process that hasn’t seen significant innovation in decades, the continuance of using electricity to heat the air and evaporate the water out of clothes.
“This is going to be a gamechanging technology,” said Ayyoub Momen the ORNL scientist who developed the prototype. “Clothes dryers consume a lot of energy.”
ORNL and GE are taking an entirely new methodology to this traditional process by using high-frequency vibrations, instead of heat, to remove the water from the fabric with minimal lint generation. The technology uses piezoelectric transducers that contract and expand when voltage is added. By using a custom
“Evaporating water takes a lot of energy,” added Momen. “That’s mainly because of the latent heating process in conventional dryers.”

amplifier, the transducer, a device that converts electricity to vibration, vibrating at a high frequency turning the water into a cool mist as it’s removed from the fabric. “The first results were mind blowing,” said Momen. “We could dry a piece of fabric in just 14 seconds. If you wanted to do that in an oven at different temperatures it would take several minutes.” ORNL and GE are working to develop a commercialized product and plan to have a full-scale prototype this year. The ultrasonic dryer is expected to cut drying time to about 20 minutes per load¬, down significantly from the average 50 minutes it currently takes Americans

Adjunctive Techniques Kelly Brown
During the Olympics last month, there was some excitement around the circular marks on some of the athletes. Cupping therapy has been used for centuries in many cultures, including China, Greece, and Russia. Cupping is only one of the many adjunctive therapies in acupuncture practice. Other techniques include Gua Sha, Moxibustion, and Tui Na.
Cupping Cupping was originally called “horning because hollowed animal horns were applied to infected tissue and the suction pulled out blood and pus. Now, fire cupping with glass cups or suction cupping, as seen on the Olympics, is used. In addition to treating skin infections, cupping is also helpful with colds, arthritis, and back pain. Cups can be kept in one place to enhance an acupuncture point or slid along an area to improve blood and Qi flow. This is why cupping is so effective in treating pain and muscle soreness. Cupping can also be applied with blood-letting to remove heat in an area. A painful region is considered to have Qi stagnation. When the Qi in an area is not moving as it should, the blood will also not move through the area properly. Over time, this creates heat. Pricking the area with a lancet, then covering it with a cup, can help to move the stagnant blood, reduce heat, and pain. This therapy can be used, in addition to acupuncture, for painful conditions such as arthritis and migraine headaches. 36
www.livingwellmagazine.net
September 2016
Gua Sha
Moxibustion
Gua Sha, or sand scraping, is also used for heat conditions, such as those described above. A ceramic spoon or flat-edged tool is used to scrape the skin at areas of pain or heat. Scraping brings the heat and redness to the surface of the skin. The degree of redness varies depending on the amount of stagnation or heat present in the area. This practice is effective with acupuncture for treatments of neck pain, headaches, and back pain. Both cupping and gua sha leave bruise-like marks, which also vary in severity. The benefits of these treatments outweigh the marks left on the skin.
Alternatively, moxibustion is a warming therapy. Moxibustion uses mugwort herb that is burned directly on an acupuncture point or needle or indirectly over a point. The warming effect helps to promote the proper movement of Qi and blood in an area. The smoke from the herb is also healing as it enters through the skin. This technique is used with acupuncture more often when pain is worse in cold and rainy weather. It is useful to decrease inflammation and pain in arthritic joints. Additionally, moxibustion can be used at the tips of certain toes for various conditions. Most notably, burning it at the outside of the small toe can help to turn a breach baby. Moxa at the big toe can help to stop uterine bleeding and bed-wetting.
Tui Na Left: Tui na is Chinese medical massage that translates to push and grasp. Various hand techniques are used to promote the proper movement of Qi and blood in an area. There are specific techniques for each area, determined by the channels affected and the location of pain.
Safe and Effective Each of the listed techniques are useful in treating various conditions when combined with acupuncture. All of these therapies are safe when performed by a properly trained professional.
