EDI TO RIAL Debo ser sincero. Esta es mi fecha preferida del año. Sol, playa, carrete, muchos panoramas y gente relax. Nadie anda estresado y todos quieren pasarlo bien. Ideal para compartir, ideal para salir y disfrutar. En las calles de Santiago hay más vida de lo común. Hay más color, hay ganas de tomarse un descanso merecido, para retomar la normalidad de las funciones que comúnmente marzo trae consigo. Enero y febrero para muchos es significado de vacaciones, pero también es un muy buen momento para deleitarse al aire libre, una tarde, un día, un fin de semana, o lo que el tiempo les permita. Disfrutar, reír y tomar fuerzas para afrontar el año. Un buen salud con los amigos, una parrilla playera para compartir. Son sólo dos meses y un largo 2012 para volver a divertirse el próximo verano. Es hoy, con todo.

3x1. Así de fácil es la denominación con la que podemos etiquetar la presentación del periodista y músico Felipe Avello, quien debuta con el show “Felipe Avello presenta”. Primero su banda, Dina Gomez, regresa a los escenarios después de un buen tiempo de inactividad. Segundo. Así llegó la noticia. “Nuevamente TerraMater logró imponerse en el tope de la lista de los mejores aceites de oliva extra virgen del mundo de calidad certificada: Petralia, el aceite ícono de TerraMater, nuevamente obtuvo el mayor puntaje otorgado por la guía Flos Olei en su versión 2012: 97 puntos de un máximo de 100”. Y no cabía dudas que este aceite iba a tener sus justos reconocimientos, por sobre los aceites provenientes de Argentina, quienes producen el doble que su par chileno. Es que a primeras Petralia destaca con un aroma muy agradable, marcado sabor herbáceo y una trabajada y excelente densidad, que no hace más que infundir calidad a este óleo gastronómico que tiene muchos merecimientos, no sólo por el producto final, sino que también por el elaborado trabajo que hay desde la cosecha. Sólo recordar que Petralia de TerraMater es el aceite más premiado de Chile en el mundo. Con destinos de exportación hacia países como Brasil, Japón y Estados Unidos, su producción llega a los 10 mil litros anuales, que no hace más que confirmar la excelente labor que realiza la empresa Terramater. Los proyectos que nacen del total anonimato y que mezclan diferentes estilos musicales con apropiada percepción son lo máximo. Mr. Pérez (Joaquín, Alan, Gonzalo, Roberto y Rubén…todos Pérez de banda, pero no familiares) nace sin esa violencia conceptual típica de las bandas de su género en los ’90, y se instala con colores propios con un menudo funk, hip hop, jazz, y en general con toda la mística afroamericana. Genial a estas alturas, donde la renovación es vital para el estilo y la supervivencia de los ritmos en Chile. Conversamos con Alan White, su frontman, para saber simplemente cómo han vivido estos dos años de música under. De a poco afinando las tuercas de la máquina, de a poco se han ganado el derecho a que le digamos señores, ojo, con puro trabajo y buena música.
Born within full anonymity and projects that mix different musical styles with appropriate perception are the best. Mr. Pérez (Joaquín, Alan, Gonzalo, Roberto and Rubén…all Perez’s band, but not family) is born without such conceptual violence typical of bands of this kind during ‘ 90s, and is installed with own characteristics with funk, hip hop, jazz, and all the African American mysticism. Great so far, where renewal is essential for style and survival of rhythms in Chile. We talked with Alan White, its frontman, to know just how experienced these two years of under music. ¿Cuándo nace Mr. Pérez y cuál es su concepto? El nacimiento de la banda está ligado a la búsqueda tanto musical como vital, de los dos fundadores y vocalistas (junto a Joaquín). El proceso a través del cual la banda fue cobrando vida, entre el verano y otoño de 2009, está marcado por la necesidad de plasmar una sonoridad unida a determinada lírica, que, enlazada entre sí, dan cuenta de la multiculturalidad experimentada desde este lado del mundo, desde una Latinoamérica sin complejos y auto determinada en su destino. ¿Qué influencias musicales tienen? La música negra, en todo ámbito,

When was Mr. Pérez born and what is the concept? The birth of the band is linked to the search as musical as vital, two founders and vocalists (along with Joaquín). The process through the band was coming into life, between summer / autumn ‘ 2009, is marked by the need to translate a sound combined with certain lyric, which linked each other, give multiculturalism experienced from this side of the world, from a Latin America without complexes and self determined in its destination. What music influences do you have?

desde la norteamericana hasta la afro latinoamericana, como la cumbia o la música de fiesta y por supuesto la “Canción popular” como elemento narrativo. En el fondo es imposible disimular la música que nos gusta a través de las canciones de Mr. Pérez, de hecho Erik Satie y Tommy Rey nos han influenciado casi de igual manera. Son de Valparaíso, ¿cuánto cuesta proyectar la música chilena desde región, específicamente a ustedes? El desafío de plasmar nuestro trabajo en logros capaces de trascender en la escena musical chilena, nos plantea fundamentalmente dos retos permanentes. Por un lado la natural distancia con Santiago, y por otro la expectativa cultural altísima que se ha construido en torno a nuestra región, particularmente la ciudad de Valparaíso. El costo de estar alejados de la capital, aún cuando no es una gran distancia, plantea dificultades evidentes sobre todo cuando la intención es acercarse a los medios de alta repercusión en Chile. La música ocupa un segundo lugar en múltiples iniciativas de fomento e inversión en esta ciudad, constantes retos que son sobrellevados a través del trabajo colaborativo con otras agrupaciones (Steppin´Cerca, Molo, Poder Guadaña, Pichanga). Nos hemos sustentando muchas veces sin productores o eventos relevantes en el circuito musical. Esto es mucho del “boca en boca” y del apoyo de la gente en cada presentación. ¿Qué opinión tiene de la música chilena? En nuestra opinión, la música chilena actualmente es analizable desde distintas miradas, la nuestra se fundamenta ineludiblemente en la política y su relación con determinadas sonoridades-líricas. ¿Cuándo estallará mediáticamente Mr. Pérez? Nosotros apostamos firmemente a nuestras canciones. Ellas hablan por nosotros. Cuando nos preguntan por las características de la banda,
Black music, in all areas, from american one to afro latinamerican like cumbia or party music ,and of course “folk song” as a narrative element. It is basically impossible to disguise the music we like through the songs of Mr. Pérez, in fact Erik Satie and Tommy Rey have influenced us almost in the same way. You come from Valparaiso, how hard is to project Chilean music from regions, specially to you? The challenge of putting our work to transcend in the Chilean music scene, produces essentially two permanent dares. On one hand the natural distance from Santiago, and on the other hand, very high cultural expectation that has built around our region, particularly the city of Valparaiso. The cost of being away from the capital, even though it is not a great distance, poses obvious difficulties especially when intention is to bring high impact media in Chile. Music is in second place in multiple initiatives for development and investment in this city, constant challenges that cope with collaborative work with other groups (Steppin´Cerca, Molo, Poder Guadaña, Pichanga). We have sustained ourselved many times without producers or relevant events on music circuit. This is much of the “word of mouth” and support of people in each presentation. What’s your opinion about Chilean music? We think you can analize Chilean music from different perspectives, ours is unavoidable based on politics and its relationship with certain lyric-sounds. When will Mr. Pérez burst open into media ? We are firmly committed to our songs. They speak through us. When they ask about characteristics of the band, our first answer is to say “listen to this

Llevan un tiempo tocando juntos, ¿cuáles son los planes para el 2012? Estamos a punto de terminar nuestro primer registro, y esperamos que nos de a conocer a la mayor cantidad de personas posible. Para esto nuestros planes se centran en las presentaciones en vivo y la producción de una plataforma para la difusión del disco (descarga gratuita, sitio web, video).

Anunciado con bombos y platillos como el número anglo del próximo Festival de Viña del Mar para felicidad de muchos, y para la extrañeza de varios que por ningún motivo creían posible la visita del inglés a la máxima cita veraniega. Pero la Quinta ya ha sacado una que otra grata sorpresa y esta es una que nos encanta. Y qué mejor si la cita se extiende a Santiago. Y es lo que pasará con el ex líder de The Smiths en el Movistar Arena. Una tremenda posibilidad de repasar un extenso repertorio plagado de éxitos, pasión escénica y principalmente un talento musical muy singular y vaporoso. Difícil desglosar la carrera de éste grande, difícil que se vuela a repetir.

But La Quinta has already released one than another pleasant surprise and this is one that we love. And what could be better if the show extends to Santiago. A fines del año 2009, tres jóvenes decidieron reunirse para hacer música de acuerdo a sus propios gustos. Cada uno tenía sus proyectos individuales, por lo que ya contaban con experiencia en el medio musical. Carlos Abarca, Edgardo Palma (DJ Pi) y César Almazabal (Uno Más) se unieron y empezaron a componer temas, dando vida a Simios de Humo.

By the end of 2009, three young men decided to meet and making music according to their own tastes. Each one had their own individual projects, so they had already experience in musical environment. Ya embarcados en el proyecto, que ellos mismos definen como “hip-soul”, comenzaron a tocar en fiestas y eventos deportivos. “Después empezamos a hacer videos y por ahí empezó a prender el asunto. A la gente le gustó la idea de nuestras mezclas de hip hop con soul, que era algo bastante distinto a lo que estaban acostumbrados”, comenta César Almazabal, quien además trabaja en un proyecto paralelo de hip hop chileno que se llama Maquetas, junto a Zebatack y Maka Meléndez. ¿Qué le depara el 2012 a Simios de Humo? Lo primero es lanzar su primer disco en el mes de abril, el cual tiene como nombre tentativo “Circo pobre”, porque “nosotros hacemos todo: tocamos, grabamos y mezclamos, y todo es autogestión. La idea del disco es que cuente con seis canciones que la gente quiera escuchar realmente y no esos discos de veinte donde quedan quince en el olvido”, añade César. La producción contará con los excelentes temas “Letra y soul” y “Lo mejor y lo peor”, los que ya se pueden escuchar en MySpace, YouTube yFacebook. 29
Already on the project, which they define as “hip-soul”, they began playing in festivals and sporting events. “Then we started to make videos and there began to light up the thing. People liked the idea of our blends of hip hop soul, which was something quite different they had been used”, said Cesar Almazabal, who also works in a side project of Chilean hip-hop called Maquetas, along with Zebatack and Maka Meléndez. What holds 2012 for Simios de Humo? First thing is to release their first album in April, which is named “Circo Pobre”, because “we do everything: we play, record and mix, and everything is self-management. The idea for the album is that it has six songs that people really want to listen to, and not those 20-song discs where 15 are forgotten” added César. Tom Darnal es fundador de la mítica banda Mano Negra y escogió este verano para realizar la primera gira promocional en Chile de su exitoso proyecto electropical, P18 Live Machine, que lleva más de una década girando por Estados Unidos, Europa y hasta en China, pero que no había tenido oportunidad de presentar en estas latitudes. Sin embargo nuestro país no le resulta para nada extraño. Ya estuvo en Santiago como músico del Royal de Luxe en la inolvidable visita de La Pequeña Gigante, y aún recuerda la convulsión en la Alameda. “Avanzábamos como tanques por la ciudad, pero para llenar de una sutilidad emocional magnífica”, dice sobre la experiencia en la compañía francesa que este año lo tendrá nuevamente tocando en Liverpool, Inglaterra. ¿Cómo es esta experiencia? Única. Nunca probé algo así. Cuando estoy tocando el bajo en este camión, cada vez que hago una nota es como si retumbara en toda la ciudad. Es una sensación tremendamente poderosa. En mi vida nunca viví algo así. Una ciudad entera, una temporada larga. Es un evento mágico como si viviéramos realmente un cuento, como El flautista de Hamelin
Tom Darnal is the founder of the legendary band Mano Negra and chose this summer for the first promotional tour in Chile of his successful project electropical, P18 Live Machine, which takes more than one decade spinning by United States, Europe and even in China, but who had not had the chance to present in these latitudes. However our country it’s not strange to him at all. He was already in Santiago as a musician of the Royal de Luxe in the unforgettable visit to the Small Giant, and still remembers the seizure at the Alameda. “We moved forward as tanks through the city, but to fill in a magnificent emotional subtlety”, says about the experience in the french company that this year will have him again playing in Liverpool, England. How is this experience? One and only. I never experienced something like this. When I’m playing bass on this truck, everytime I do a note it is as if it thunders throughout the city. It is a tremendously powerful feeling. In my life I lived never something like this. An entire city, a long season. It is a magical event as if actually live a fairy tale, as the Pied Piper of Hamelin

How long do you rehearse? During a month in the city where we are going to play, but there is a prior month of reherarsals. Also during this period the specialized people travel to see how the cityis , the roads we will be passing , etc. There is an incredible logistics, every detail is planned. They are tremendous and large teams, each one with its own autonomy. There is also something martial in this bet I love this balance. Royal de Luxe is a balance between the tremendous physical and mental concentration that we must have, and the beauty of the show. I remember the last day in Santiago, we looked like a division of tanks through the Alameda, but at the same time we presented something so light, a magnificent emotional subtlety. And so close to people. And how are returns of all the bombast to something as simple as P18? It is okay going back to simplicity and the root of what a musician is, with his instrument is able to play anywhere. But this project (P18) has mutated enough. Today is an electronic duo, but everything we have in our computer are things recorded for ten years between Paris and Havana. How did this project come out? If we took the time machine, once separated Mano Negra, in ‘ 96 I went back to Cuba to reconnect with a family of musicians that I met when we were on tour in ‘ 92. And since then we believed in a project that mixes this electronics and tropical styles.At that time, there was no projects like that, Proyecto 1 perhaps. You were precursors to this merger Total. We were pioneers of this type of sound. But as wherever you start something was difficult because the road is not open and you have to create your own route. And we had to see what were the Afro-cuban rhythms that we could mix, in addition the teams were not as developed as it is now. It was a kind of nightmare, machines were very big , tough connections, all

Igualmente en ese período la gente especializada viaja a ver cómo es la ciudad, los caminos por los que pasaremos, etc. Hay una logística increíble, cada detalle está previsto. Son grandes y tremendos equipos, cada uno con su autonomía. Hay algo marcial también en esta apuesta Me gusta este balance. Royal de Luxe tiene un equilibrio entre la tremenda concentración física y mental que debemos tener, y la belleza del espectáculo. Recuerdo el último día en Santiago, parecíamos una división de tanques pasando por la Alameda, pero a la vez lo que presentamos es algo tan ligero, de una sutilidad emocional magnífica. Y tan cercano para la gente. ¿Y cómo se devuelve de toda esa grandilocuencia a algo tan simple como P18? Está bien volver a la simpleza y a la raíz de lo que es un músico que con su instrumento es capaz de tocar en cualquier lugar. Pero este proyecto (P18) ha mutado bastante. Actualmente es un dúo electrónico, pero todo lo que tenemos adentro de nuestro computador son cosas grabadas durante diez años entre Paris y La Habana. ¿Cómo surgió este proyecto? Si tomamos la Maquina del Tiempo, después que se separó Mano Negra, el ‘96 yo volví a Cuba a reencontrarme con una familia de músicos que conocí cuando fuimos en gira el ‘92. Y desde entonces pensamos en hacer un proyecto que mezclara esta onda electrónica y tropical. Entonces no había tanto proyecto así, Proyecto 1 quizás. Fueron precursores de esta fusión Total. Fuimos pioneros de este tipo de sonido. Pero como siempre que se empieza algo fue bastante difícil porque el camino no está abierto y tienes que crear tú una propia ruta. Y tuvimos que ver cuáles eran los ritmos afrocubanos que se podían mezclar, además los equipos no estaban tan desarrollados como ahora. Fue un poco una pesadilla, las máquinas eran muy grandes, las conexiones

súper duras, todo muy sensible. Pero lo hemos montado no con músicos profesionales sino con rumberos de calle. Había dos percusionistas, tres metales, dos bailarines, dos cantantes… fuimos hasta 12 en escena. Muy difícil de mantener, me imagino Estuvimos así 10 años, pero se hacía muy complicado, me fui de Paris y luego de un tiempo decidí retomar pero volviendo a las bases más electrónicas. Entonces te incorporaste tú, Ced… (Ced) Tom me contactó cuando se acabó la banda y nos juntábamos para probar sonidos, sin pensar en formar nada. Con su material empezamos a remezclar, a fabricar, ver truquitos y vimos si podíamos mezclar en vivo lo que hacíamos en estudio. Al principio fue bastante desastroso, pero ahora ya no tanto (risas) ¿Tiene mucho de experimentación entonces? Sí, muchísimo. A mí me gusta la experimentación hasta el punto de ponerme en peligro. Ahora he disminuido en algo, muy poco el riesgo (risas). Me aburre cuando las cosas están demasiado armadas. Hay que construir camino y, como la ruta es larga, mejor dar la vuelta al mundo.

(Ced) Tom got in touch with me when the band ended and us we caught up just to test sounds, without thinking of anything.With his material we started remixing, producing, check little tricks and if we could mix live as what we did in recording studio. At first it was pretty disastrous, but not any longer (laughs) It has a lot of experimentation ,right? Yes, a lot. I like experimentation to the point of endangering me. Now I’ve fallen a bit, very little risk (laughs). It’s boring when things are too made. You have to build path and, as the route is long, better turn around the whole world.

Música pegote. Pero buena música pegote. Es la primera impresión cuando uno escucha a Barretso, este músico y productor chileno que ha ido rápidamente haciendo ruido por allá fuera y por acá dentro. Joven y con mucho descaro. Podría ser uno más de la escena nacional, pero tiene ese “nosequé” que lo diferencia de los demás exponentes de la electrónica. Lo sacamos unos minutos de su trabajo, para que nos contara quién es él.
Catchy music. But good catchy music. It ‘s the first impression when you listen to Barretso, Chilean musician and producer who has been making noise abroad and around here. Young and plenty of audacity. He could be one more of the national scene, but he has that “something” that makes the difference from the other exponents of the electronics. So we took him off a few minutes from his job to tell us who he is.
¿Cómo nace musicalmente Francisco Cofré, aka Frankie Barretso? Nació el día en que me di cuenta que con unos simples programas de audio que bajé gratis de Internet podía hacer mucha cosas. Estuve todo el tiempo tocando en bandas, pero fue decisivo el hecho de que ahora podía hacer todo yo mismo en la comodidad de mi casa. ¿Qué estilos de música cultivas para los que no te conocen? Siempre me ha gustado trabajar mi música con influencias pop ochenteras
How was born Francisco Cofré, aka Frankie Barretso musically? He was born the day that I realized with a few simple audio programs that I free downloaded from Internet, I could do many things . I was constantly playing in bands, but was decisive the fact that now I could do everything by myself in the comfort of my house. What styles of music do you cultivate for those who do not know you? I have always liked to work my music with 80’s pop influences in terms of mixing

en términos de mezcla y composición. No sabría cómo definirla en una sola corriente, pero si sé que contempla influencias del French House, Chillwave, Retro futuristic pop, etc. Trabajas con la gente de Tuff Em! Up Records, ¿cómo se dio eso? Ellos me contactaron vía e-mail el año 2009 diciendo que habían escuchado mi música en Myspace y que estaban interesados en que firmara con ellos el release de un EP. Ahí saqué Bright City Lights, el cual tuvo una recepción muy buena ayudando abrir puertas de una escena más global. ¿Qué diferencias musicales hay entre el primer EP, Bright City Lights, y Celeste, el segundo? Cuando hice el Bright City Lights sabía un cuarto de lo que se hoy, en términos de mezcla sonora y recursos aplicables a la composición. Es un EP que tiene influencias concretas. Está más asociado a un estilo en particular. Celeste tiene más detalles técnicos y es variado en sus influencias, partiendo del hecho de que son cuatro canciones muy distintas entre sí y sus bpms son diferentes. Está menos orientando a la pista de baile y más orientado al IPod. ¿Qué te parece la escena actual de música electrónica en Chile? Me gusta. Cada vez están viniendo más músicos al país y se están haciendo actos internacionales de primer nivel. De alguna manera esto hace crecer la demanda de este tipo de música, crea adeptos, se hacen un mayor número de fiestas e impulsa la producción. Tienes una visión internacional de lo que es hacer música, ¿qué expectativas profesionales tienes? Bueno, lo que todos quieren, Llegar a las grandes ligas. ¿En qué estarás este 2012? Se viene movido. Ahora en febrero parto a Nueva York. Posteriormente tendré mi primera gira por Estados Unidos. En Mayo vuelvo a Sudamérica. Paso por Perú, Bolivia, Argentina, Brasil y finalizo en Chile. A la par estoy trabajando en mi primer LP. ¿Qué significa Barretso? Barretso no tiene ningún significado en español. Barretso viene por Syd Barrett.

Up Records, how was that? They contacted me by e-mail in 2009 saying that they had listened my music on Myspace and they were interested in signing the release of an EP with them. There I brought up Bright City Lights, having a very good reception helping opening doors to a more global stage. What musical differences are between the first EP, Bright City Lights, and Celeste, the second one? When I produced Bright City Lights I knew just a quarter of what I know today, in terms of sound mixing and applicable resources to the composition. It is an EP that has specific influences. It is more associated with a style in particular. Celeste has more technical details and is varied in its influences, on the basis of the fact that are four very different songs from each other and their bpms are different. It is less oriented to the dance floor and more oriented to the IPod. What do you think about the current scene of electronic music in Chile? I like it. More musicians increasingly are coming to the country , and worldclass international events are being made . Somehow this increases the demand for this type of music, creates followers, a greater number of festivals are made and drives the production. You have an international vision of what making music is , what professional expectations do you have? Well, what everyone wants to .....To get into the big leagues. Your plans for this 2012? Comes lots of things along. I go to New York in February. Later I will have my first U.S.A.tour . In May I return to South America. Going through Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Brazil and ends up in Chile. While I’m working on my first LP. What does Barretso mean? Barretso has no meaning in Spanish. Barretso comes by Syd Barrett.

Una nueva versión, la 54, que como es costumbre no está exenta de polémica producto de la elección de sus artistas, el comienzo de las explosivas críticas y copuchas de todos los medios faranduleros del país. Reinas, noteros persiguiendo a los artistas, romances, el “monstruo de la Quinta”, y por supuesto música y humor. Porque Viña tiene festival y crea o no, el mejor de Latinoamérica.

El origen de este festival fue sumamente modesto. En 1959, el director del departamento de turismo y relaciones públicas de la Municipalidad de Viña del Mar, Carlos Ansaldo, reunió a un grupo de músicos para tocar mientras se realizaba una feria organizada por alumnos de la Escuela de Bellas Artes en los jardines de la Quinta Vergara. Después de esta iniciativa, en el año 64, se comenzó a construir un anfiteatro de madera al aire libre, en cuya superficie existía una “concha acústica” que ayudaba a mejorar el sonido y proteger a los artistas de la lluvia. Esta construcción se transformó en todo un icono del festival. En los primeros años, fue animado por Ricardo García y Raúl Matas, para luego, en 1968, lo comenzará a animar César Antonio Santis. Finalmente en 1976 tomó su lugar Antonio Vodanovic, quien se convirtió en un símbolo al ser el anfitrión del certamen por 29 años.

The origin of this festival was extremely modest. In 1959, Head of Viña del Mar Tourism and Public Relations Department, Carlos Ansaldo, brought together a group of musicians to play while there was a fair organized by students at the school of fine arts in the gardens of Quinta Vergara . After this initiative, in 1964, a wooden amphitheatre outdoor was built, on its surface had an “acoustic shell” which helped to improve the sound and to protect artists from the rain. This building was transformed into a complete icon of the festival. In the early years, was hosted by Ricardo Garcia and Raúl Matas , then, in 1968, was did it by César Antonio Santis . Finally in 1976 took its place Antonio Vodanovic, who became a symbol to be the host of the contest for 29 years.

Fue recién en la década del 70 cuando este espectáculo comenzó a popularizarse masivamente, debido a que todos los derechos fueron comprados por Televisión Nacional de Chile. Esos años quedaron marcados por una fuerte polémica en la competencia folklórica, tras un encontrón entre Quilapayún y Los Huasos Quincheros, que tuvo como consecuencia, en el año 74, que se suspendiera ésta competencia. Lo curioso fue que esa jornada, el evento fue transmitido por primera vez internacionalmente. Posteriormente el Festival de Viña pasaría a la historia por otro importante hecho. En 1978 fue el primer programa de la televisión en Chile que se transmitió en señal de colores. Pasaron muchos años en que el evento fue transmitido por TVN, hasta que en 1993 se licita la transmisión integra del festival. ¿El ganador? Megavisión, en conjunto con Televisa de México. Posteriormente en 1999, los derechos fueron comprados por Canal 13, para finalmente ser adjudicado en 2011 por Chilevisión, quienes van por su segundo año este verano.

Festival tradition not only stands out due its story or its artists, also there is a key component that turned this festival as the most important of all Latin America: its audience, which was nicknamed as “The Monster”. It emerges when the audience interrupted booing and whisteling at the presentation of the artists , when they find that the show is not worth, and not good enough. Victims? Many, we could write a report with them.
La tradición festivalera no sólo se caracteriza por su historia o sus artistas, también existe un componente clave que convirtió a éste festival como el más importante de toda Latinoamérica: su público, el cual fue bautizado como el “monstruo”. Éste surge cuando el público asistente interrumpe la presentación de los artistas con imparables silbatinas cuando encuentran que el show no está a la altura. ¿Víctimas? Muchas, que darían para un reportaje. 48

En 1969 fue el año de Julio Iglesias, quien recurrió a todo su repertorio musical, provocadores movimientos de cuerpo y su extenso diccionario de frases que quedaron inmortalizadas en el escenario de la Quinta. Ejemplos claros como “os quiero, os amo, os adoro”, la promesas de ponerle el nombre de Chile a uno de sus hijos, entre otras. En el 88 fue para el “Puma” Rodriguez con su magistral “a veces hay que escuchar la voz del pueblo”, razonada cuando la organización no quería entregarle el máximo galardón: “La gaviota de plata”. En 1987 fue el turno de Marta Sánchez. Recordado fue su provocador gesto de la vocalista del ese entonces grupo Olé Olé, quien tras recibir “La antorcha de plata” el monstruo comenzó a gritar “la colita, la colita” y la joven respondió levantándose la falda y moviendo su cintura, entregándole al público más de lo que pedía. Una presentación, que hoy es considerada de culto, fue la entregada por el grupo “Faith No More” en el año 1991. Esa presentación culminó con un recordado agarrón de Mike Patton a Antonio Vodanovic en su trasero, acto que produjo la notoria incomodidad del clásico animador. Este 2012 la parrilla viene variopinta. Luis Miguel, Los Bunkers, Marc Anthony y el extraordinario Morrissey estarán dando vida al máximo evento veraniego de nuestro país. Clásico.

Valdés, que es reconocido por su trabajo en torno a la representación de toros y caballos, cuenta con una vasta trayectoria que va en sus inicios desde el dibujo y la pintura, pasando por el diseño teatral en Chile, para llegar a los más notables escenarios de la escultura mundial.

What is this new exhibition about? “Diversos rastros de una huella” is a selection of works from each of the different series which I have dealt with, choosing, the cream and diverse. Most sculptures, from 1981 until 2011, some paintings, recent writings on the walls, and photographs of my mother. A lifetime. You work is recognized by the depiction of bulls and horses, Why this affinity? To name some, time is an issue on which I stop frequently, the bull and the horse are two ancient symbolic icons rooted in dawn of our gender,
“Diversos rastros de una huella” es una selección de obras, desde cada una de las distintas series que he abordado, eligiendo, lo más granado y diverso. La mayoría esculturas, desde 1981 hasta 2011, algunas pinturas, escritos recientes sobre los muros, y fotografías de mi madre. Toda una vida. Tú trabajo es reconocido por la representación de toros y caballos, ¿por qué esta afinidad? Para nombrar alguna, el tiempo es un tema sobre el cual me detengo con frecuencia, el toro y el caballo son dos antiguos íconos emblemáticos

enraizados en el alba de nuestro género, los cromañones vieron en las rugosidades de la oscura piedra, insinuados, entre otras figuras, agregaron pequeños toques, manchas, líneas, retratando así el espíritu de los abuelos del toro y el caballo actuales. Luego vi al Minoico y a Bucéfalo y los caballos de Leonardo, al toro asirio, los de Goya y los de Picasso, animales ya clásicos del arte universal. Yo los veo también en piedras tan antiguas como nuestra cuna, sus ancestrales formas, labradas por el tiempo, insinuando nalgas o pechos. Agradezco a estas abuelitas; joyas de mi arte son las mismas que se encuentran bajo de nuestros pies. ¿Cómo surge esta escultura llamada Enamorado Bramando? Es uno de tantos toros que resultan del oficio y su práctica diaria. Éste es el primer agrandado que he mandado hacer a un taller especializado en esta monumental escala. Has participado en diferentes muestras colectivas en el extranjero, por lo mismo, ¿qué visión tienes del arte en nuestro país? Colectivas e individuales como expositor, en algunas pocas, pero como espectador. He visitado, recorrido y estudiado muchas en galerías, ferias y museos del mundo. Puedo afirmar que estamos bien, muy bien en Santiago. Es una pena que del resto del país no he visto suficiente. ¿Existen diferencias tan abismantes en lo que se hace aquí con respecto a lo que se hace en otros países? Dado el número de habitantes, contamos con un puñado de primera, otro de segunda y así, como en otros lugares que he visitado. ¿Otro síntoma homogenizante de la acelerada globalización que nos toca abrazar? Desde lo poco que conozco diría que estamos muy por sobre la media global. ¿Cuáles son las principales falencias qué tiene la escultura en Chile? Incentivar la participación de más escultores. Faltan concursos públicos y transparentes con jurados confiables, escogidos entre la poca gente que no necesite favorecer más que a su dignidad, ni obedecer más que a su

Collective and individual as exhibitor, in some few, but as a spectator. I have visited, toured and studied many in galleries, exhibitions and museums of the world. I can say that we are well, very well in Santiago. It is a pity that I have not seen enough from the rest of the country. Are there such huge differences in what is done here regarding to what is done in other countries? Because of the number of inhabitants, we have a bunch of first, another of second and so, as in other places I’ve visited. Another symptom homogeneous of accelerated globalisation that we have to embrace? From little I know , I would say that we are very above the global average. What are the main shortcomings that sculpture has in Chile? Encourage the participation of more sculptors. We have a lack of public and transparent competitions with reliable panel of judges, chosen among the few people who does not need to encourage rather than their dignity, nor obey rather than their deep and

sound judgment. Nowadays , Do you feel yourself as a recognized artist? Not only regarding awards, but rather the artístic-colective recognition. I feel the recognition and sometimes the sweet admiration of a few “understood ones”. Much more obvious and widespread is the energy I feel through the enthusiasm of common people. After this exhibition, what next this 2012? Making a dream come true. Rest and take a prudent distance that allows me to observe the work and the sculptor, and be witness and internal viewer, of the “ homos faber “ that I had to be, free of self-imposed stress , caused by this stony and sometimes paved road of the required notoriety of this race that came to choose me.

Después de esta exhibición, ¿qué viene para ti en este 2012? Realizar un sueño. Descansar y tomar una distancia prudente que me permita observar la obra y al escultor, y ser testigo y espectador interior, del “homos faber” que me tocó ser, libre de la presión autoimpuesta, provocada por este pedregoso y a veces asfaltado camino de la necesaria notoriedad, de esta carrera que me vino a elegir a mí.

aviones. Todo a través de trucos que parecen magia, pero tienen su base en la ciencia y pueden replicarse fuera del MIM con simples objetos caseros. Otra actividad creada para mayores de 6 años es “Viaje al centro de la atmósfera”, donde el público podrá usar la imaginación y crear simples “modelos de atmósfera”, para ver frente a sus ojos las fuerzas invisibles que actúan justo sobre nuestras cabezas, influyendo en el clima. Y para los más pequeños (preescolares de 4 a 5 años), el Museo creó “El mundo a mi medida”, donde aprenderán nociones que les permitirán cuantificar y conocer las dimensiones de los objetos, jugando con un dado gigante o levantando unas grandes pesas. Un panorama para todo el día La Ciencia asombrosa forma parte de las actividades complementarias del MIM: talleres (robótica forestal y minera, construcción, imprenta), recorrido guiado por la Sala de electromagnetismo (mayores de 8 años), y cine 3D. La muestra con las imágenes inéditas de septiembre de 1973, captadas por el fotoperiodista holandés Koen Wessing en los días posteriores al golpe de Estado, fue vista por más de 27 mil personas. El impacto y éxito de la muestra fue tal que vuelve a montarse, esta vez acompañada de testimonios del público y la posibilidad de que los espectadores interactúen a través de una página web. La exposición incluye 39 fotos, ampliaciones de alta calidad y proyecciones secuenciales cinematográficas, que crean un efecto de intimidad y potencia pocas veces visto en exposiciones de fotografía en Chile. Se puede ver el Estadio Nacional convertido en campo de prisioneros, el funeral de Pablo Neruda y las acciones de los militares en las calles: queman libros, revisan a ciudadanos comunes y corrientes, transportan detenidos. El Museo Histórico Nacional (MHN), en su búsqueda imperiosa por exhibir y compartir con la sociedad sus colecciones y por contar la historia de Chile, a través de distintos objetos patrimoniales, ha organizado la exposición “Símbolos de honor. Bandas y condecoraciones”. Una actividad necesaria para conocer la historia y sus emblemas.
Esta exposición colectiva reúne las obras de Francisca Aninat, Alejandra Prieto, Rodrigo Araya, Claudio Correa y Víctor Pavez, en un conjunto de alternativas que toman como punto de partida las violaciones a los derechos humanos ocurridas en la historia de Chile, desde su independencia hasta nuestros días.
Esta exposición presenta las ilustraciones de “Cuentos para grandes”, una antología de historias sobre sexo contadas por diferentes personajes chilenos. Las creaciones, en formato protagónico, están a cargo de un selecto grupo de invitados.

Este tipo de festivales son los que prenden con todo el mundo del séptimo arte en nuestro país. En Santiago específicamente, el Festival de Cine UC es una puerta para disfrutar de una selección de las mejores películas nacionales e internacionales. Un gusto para aquellos que recién comienzan a valorar el cine, para aquellos que disfrutan con una buena película o simplemente para ser parte de un excelente panorama de verano entre enero y febrero. Este festival no anda con pequeñas. No! Toda la carne a la parrilla de una, lo que representa una búsqueda minuciosa por excelentes títulos que estuvieron durante 2011 llenando las carteleras nacionales y que hoy aparecen en la programación de esta nueva versión del Cine UC. Empecemos, y sólo por nombrar algunas películas chilenas. Aparecen obras como “Piotr, una mala traducción”, de Martín Seeger; “Metro cuadrado”, de Nayra Ilic; “Nostalgia de la luz”, de Patricio Guzmán, “Perro muerto”, de Camilo Becerra, y “Música campesina”, de Alberto Fuguet, entre otras cintas de calidad que ya fueron exhibidas en nuestro país, pero que claramente para quienes se las perdieron en el cine, es una excelente oportunidad para ver joyitas seleccionadas por profesionales y así, poder actualizar sus butacas. El parque cuenta además, con una zona de camping con 80 sitios de 100 metros cuadrados cada uno, los que están equipados con quinchos, electricidad y mesas techadas y baños con duchas con agua caliente. A esta área, llamada “La Villita”, sólo se permite el ingreso de los campistas, los que también tienen acceso al resto de las instalaciones. Cuenta con guardias de seguridad las 24 horas y pulseras de control de accesos, además de ser una zona especialmente diseñada para familias que buscan un lugar de descanso. También posee un área de pic-nic con cómodas instalaciones (parrilla, mesa y sillas) y baños, duchas y camarines. Parque Oasis además, tiene un gran salón de eventos para 250 personas con distintas alternativas de menús y entretenciones, múltiples juegos infantiles y nuevas canchas de futbolito. En cuanto a la seguridad, el recinto cuenta con un sistema de enfermería, además de salvavidas autorizados en cada una de las piscinas, personal capacitado para atender todos los requerimientos de los visitantes, cámaras de seguridad, altoparlantes, cámaras de seguridad, sistema de radio cerrada. Todos estos elementos permiten recibir a los visitantes sin correr riesgos.
