Our Residence Halls at the University of South Carolina put you at the center of everything. Look at the map and you’ll see that nearly everything you need is on campus and close at hand. There’s no need to waste time running all over town — entertainment, food and enriching activities are right here on the University of South Carolina campus. The University’s residence halls, academic buildings, recreational areas and service facilities are located within just a few blocks of each other. No long commutes! You can just roll out of bed and into your classroom. We offer convenient, campus-wide cash cards and meal plans, supportive residential communities and round-the-clock assistance provided by a trained live-in staff of students and professionals. Computer labs are located across campus, and cable TV and data connections are in every room. All residence hall rooms are air-conditioned. So settle in and get ready to enjoy your time here at the University of South Carolina!
The staff who both live and work within the residence halls include Resident Mentors (RMs), Residence Hall Directors (RHDs) and Residence Life Coordinators (RLCs). Resident Mentors are undergraduate student staff members assigned to live on the floors with students and are available to assist residents in daily college life activities. Residence Hall Directors are graduate student staff members who provide leadership and supervision to the programs and services in assigned buildings. Residence Life Coordinators are full-time University employees, all of whom have educational backgrounds in student support services. Residence Life Coordinators also provide programmatic oversight in large buildings.
University Housing responds quickly and efficiently to maintenance needs and requests. We have our own in-house maintenance department. Students can visit FIXX online at www.housing.sc.edu/fixx to report any maintenance issues or to check on a previous request. With nearly 300 student organizations on campus, connecting to the community will be no problem. You can serve as the voice of your neighbors by becoming a part of the Residence Hall Association (RHA). RHA is made up of representatives from each of our 24 residence halls and is the second largest student organization on campus. As an RHA committee member, you’ll address residence life issues, promote positive change, have the chance to attend regional and national conferences, meet interesting people and develop leadership skills.
Academic Life
in University of South Carolina Residence Halls University Housing is continually seeking partnerships with faculty and staff to create supportive learning environments in our residence halls. In the 2011 edition of America’s Best Colleges, U.S. News and World Report ranked the University of South Carolina-Columbia in the top 26 colleges for learning communities. Learning communities within our residence halls are environments that exist to enhance and maximize students’ personal and academic experiences at Carolina. University Housing strives to provide students with the opportunity to live in an environment that promotes diversity, embraces excellence, encourages insightful faculty-student interaction, and works to develop a strong sense of community. Residential Learning Initiatives: The A-Frame University Housing promotes student learning through an environment that motivates and inspires students to devote time and energy to educationally purposeful activities. Classrooms Classrooms have been established and furnished in Capstone, Columbia Hall, East Quad, Honors Residence, Maxcy, Patterson, Preston, South Quad and West “Green” Quad. TVs, DVD players, VCRs, overhead projectors, as well as high-speed Internet access, are standard in these classrooms. More than 80 sections of undergraduate and graduate classes are taught in our residence halls, including sections of the University’s renowned University 101.
Community Education Teams University Housing considers all of
our residence halls to be learning environments. Therefore, all of our residents are members of a living and learning community. Community Education Teams (CET), comprised of dedicated faculty, academic staff and University Housing professional and student staff, are invested in the success of our residents and the development of our living and learning communities. Additionally, our student staff and hall government leaders design and implement programs that aid students in the areas of academic progress, awareness of self and awareness of others.
Computer Labs 24-hour computer labs are located in Bates House and Columbia Hall. They feature a variety of software programs to enhance students’ academic activity.
First-Year Centers We have designated halls as first-year centers, in which only freshmen are assigned to live. Staff receive targeted training in first-year student needs. These centers offer front-loading of academic support and other services that are particular to the first-year experience.

Academic Centers for Excellence Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) As a collaborative effort between University Housing, the Department of English’s Writing Center and the Department of Mathematics, ACE offers writing consultations, individual and small-group math tutoring and academic success coaching. It also offers online services such as the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) and other self-assessments. ACE is located in Bates House, Columbia Hall, Sims and the Student Success Center at the Thomas Cooper Library. The resources and services offered by ACE are free and are available for all University of South Carolina students. See www.housing.sc.edu/ACE for more information.
Academic Excellence Recognition ACE and University Housing annually recognize residential students who earned a 3.75 or higher cumulative GPA. Students and their parents receive a certificate of recognition for their outstanding academic achievement along with a congratulatory letter.
Out to Lunch Out to Lunch, sponsored by University Housing and Carolina Dining Services, allows students to take a professor to lunch for free. Students pick up a ticket from a University Housing office and then invite a professor to lunch at one of the campus dining facilities.
Pre-Advising Meetings Prior to the advising period each semester, academic advisors from various departments hold informal meetings in residence halls. During this time, students can learn about the advising process and how to maximize the effectiveness of their advisement appointments.
University Housing Scholarships Each year, University Housing offers two $500 scholarships, the Melinda Quiring and Lawrence Nettina Memorial Scholarship and the James R. “Red” Smith Memorial Scholarship. Students who receive these scholarships are active leaders in their residence halls. The applications for these scholarships are available online in February and must be completed in the spring semester. Living & Learning Communities Living and Learning Communities are an integral part of the university experience, providing students with the opportunity to live in an environment that promotes diversity, embraces excellence, encourages insightful faculty-student interaction and works to develop a strong sense of community. Glossary Apartment Style These halls feature two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments with one or two bathrooms. Many of these bedrooms are designated as private, giving residents their own space. Kitchens and living rooms are included in most apartments as well. Residents of these rooms are required to clean their own apartments. Cable Connections Cable offerings include basic cable stations, as well as a preview guide and the University’s closed-circuit station that provides a variety of educational and entertainment programs. For more information, please visit www.housing.sc.edu/cabletv.asp. Co-ed Co-ed simply means open to males and females. If a residence hall is called “co-ed” it houses male and female residents. In co-ed buildings with hall bathrooms, each floor houses students of one gender so bathrooms on that hall are restricted to that gender. In suite-style co-ed buildings, each suite houses students of a single gender. Computer Labs Labs are available to students 24 hours a day in each residential area. Ethernet Card, Network Card, NIC, PCMCIA This is the physical piece of hardware that allows you to connect to the University network. In most newer laptops these are built-in, but older laptops may have a small device that can be inserted into a designated slot on the side of the laptop. There is also a USB version of network adapters, but they only allow for a slower and less reliable connection. Guest Visitation Policies Plan A: Visitation of the opposite sex is restricted to the main lobby of the residence hall. This policy is adhered to on the basement floor of Wade Hampton. Plan B: Visitation of the opposite sex is restricted to the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 a.m. daily. Buildings adhering to this policy include Bates House, Bates West, Capstone, Columbia Hall, Maxcy, McClintock, Patterson, The Roost and Sims. McBryde and South Tower also use this policy for first-year students. Wade Hampton uses this policy for floors 1-4 only. At the conclusion of the fall semester, each Plan B floor may, if they choose, vote to adjust their visitation to Plan C if the ma jority of the students per floor favor such a change. Roommate contracts, however, always prevail when it comes to visitation guidelines. Plan C: Visitation of the opposite sex is restricted to 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Sunday. South Tower follows this plan for upper class residents only. Plan D: Visitation is self-regulated by the residents of each hall. These halls include DeSaussure, East Quad, French House, Harper/Elliott, Honors Residence, Pinckney/Legare, Preston College, Rutledge, South Quad, Thornwell, West “Green” Quad and Woodrow. McBryde also follows Policy D, but it is reserved for upperclass floors only. (All plans are subject to change) MicroFridge A MicroFridge is a combination microwave, refrigerator and freezer. Parking Several parking areas are found on and around campus. Most are reserved parking facilities that require a garage decal to be purchased. However, there are areas available for all students with student/commuter decals, as well as metered parking. For more information, please visit www.sc.edu/vmps. Residence Hall Classrooms There are classrooms in Capstone, Columbia Hall, East Quad, Honors Residence, Maxcy, Patterson, Preston, South Quad and West “Green” Quad. Multimedia equipment (TV with computer connectivity, VCR/DVD and data connection) is standard in most of these classrooms. For student convenience, several sections of University 101 are held in residence hall classrooms.
Russell House University Union The Russell House University Union is conveniently located on Greene Street in the center of campus. It houses the University Bookstore, as well as a variety of dining options including the Grand Marketplace, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and Chick-Fil-A. All residents receive their mail from the Russell House Post Office located on the basement level. Smoking Policy I. In conjunction with the University policy, smoking and the use of tobacco products is prohibited in all campus residence halls including: • entrances, balconies, decks, patios and outside stairways to residence halls and outdoor passageways to entrances, decks, patios and stairways • within 25 feet of a residence hall or an air intake unit/ opening • courtyards or other areas where the air circulation may be impeded by architectural, landscaping or other barriers • outdoor entry or service lines such as bus stops near a residence hall • outdoor seating areas provided by University Housing or University of South Carolina • dining services on campus • outdoor areas where there is fixed seating II. The sale, sampling or advertisement of all tobacco products or their use is prohibited in or around any residence hall building and in all residence hall publications (fliers, brochures, event postings, etc.). III.All members of the University of South Carolina residence hall community, including visitors and vendors working on campus, are expected to comply with this policy. This policy relies on the consideration and cooperation of tobacco-users and non-users. Suite-Style Suite-style halls have bathrooms that act as a connector between two bedrooms and are shared by the residents of those rooms. It generally includes a vanity area, a sink, a shower and toilet. Residents who have suite-style bathrooms are responsible for cleaning the bathroom and supplying their own toilet paper. Technology All student rooms have direct access to the campus network and the Internet. All residents pay University Technology Services for this service. Wireless access is also available in all residence halls. In addition, our closed-circuit TV system provides a variety of educational and entertainment programming. Traditional Style A traditional style hall features a hall bathroom that is shared by all residents on that floor. It generally includes several sinks, toilets, showers and mirrors depending on the size of that hall. Hall bathrooms are cleaned by University Housing custodial staff and are stocked with toilet paper and paper towels. Residents are encouraged to bring a shower caddy, shower shoes and a robe/cover-up.
Note: Any person required to register under Article 7, Sex Offender Registry, is prohibited from living in campus student housing. S.C. Code of Laws Ann. 23-3-456 (2005). In the event it is determined that any person in campus student housing is subject to above, law enforcement officials and appropriate University officials will be informed and the housing contract will be deemed null and void and terminated immediately without refund.

Forget long walks to the parking garage. You can park right out front in the Bates Area parking lot! There’s an all-you-can-eat cafeteria right on your own first floor. Because of its layout, Bates House is a great place to meet new people. Bates House has a computer lab, for when you need to work, and a game room with pool, ping-pong, couches and a TV for when you don’t. Hate cleaning your own bathroom? With community bathrooms, you don’t have to!

With the Russell House right across the street, you’re close to dining options, the bookstore and your student mailbox. The building is small, making it easier to build more personal relationships with other residents. There is a huge lobby area with couches, a TV and vending machines where residents hang out. The Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) has an office right next door in Sims. The Women’s Quad has a great outdoor area where you can sit and enjoy the beautiful weather. Many residents use the tables and benches outside to do homework and to hang out with friends.

South Tower
The upper floors of South Tower offer residents a great view of the city. The furniture in South Tower is moveable so students can personalize their rooms. Residents can park right across Greene Street in the Bull Street Garage. There is a large common lounge space on the first floor and kitchens on each floor for residents to use. Do you need your morning coffee? The bookstore in the Russell House is on your way to class and serves Starbucks coffee.

Located in the beautiful Women’s Quad area, Wade Hampton offers outdoor seating so you can enjoy the scenery while studying or hanging out with friends. It’s small size will make building relationships with fellow residents easier. Several small lounges throughout the building provide space for residents to get out of their rooms and study or socialize. There are small kitchens on almost every floor and a large kitchen on the ground floor where you can bake cookies or cupcakes for special events. Residents are provided with a MicroFridge in their rooms.

Columbia Hall has two classrooms where many U101 classes are held, as well as a computer lab with printers and an Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) office, all located on the lobby floor. The dining facility, Gibbes Court, is just across the parking lot in Capstone, so you can use your meal plan nearby. It’s located on the north side of campus, near many academic buildings, and is also just a short walk from downtown if you want to get off-campus for a bit. There is a small free student lot behind Columbia Hall, and two parking garages are within a short walk. The Columbia Hall Government sponsors many activities throughout the year.

You can have the opportunity to live amongst residents from other countries as South Quad is home to the Carolina Global and Spanish Communities. The roommates of each apartment can regulate their own visitation policy. Apartments offer large kitchens and living rooms for socializing, but also have private bedrooms for each resident. South Quad is close to the Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center, as well as the Blatt P.E. Center. There are classrooms in South Quad where many classes are held during the Fall and Spring semesters.

Important Safety Tips For Your Room For the 2008-2009 academic year, 86% of students reported that they felt safe in their rooms. However, when you come to the University of South Carolina we want you to keep yourself safer. So, follow some of these simple guidelines: • Never prop your door open. • Don’t leave your room unlocked when you go to class, the bathroom, when you visit a friend in a different room or when you go to sleep at night. • Always carry your CarolinaCard and keys with you. Never loan your ID or room key to anyone. • Mark your personal items. Through Project S.T.O.P., a service offered by University’s Division of Law Enforcement and Safety, students can have their name and University identification code number (from VIP) engraved on important items. • If you are not covered under your parent’s homeowner’s policy, you should purchase property insurance for your personal belongings. • Always travel in pairs. The Night Shuttle and the APO “taxi” service, available through the Alpha Phi Omega service organization, are safer ways to get around campus at night. Call 777-DUCK or the campus police and someone will be glad to escort you to your destination. • Remember that alcohol consumption impairs your ability to make good judgments and decisions. Alcohol is involved in more than 30 percent of all critical incidents reported at the University of South Carolina. • Report any suspicious or criminal activity to the police immediately. Dial 911 from any phone on campus to contact the University Police Department or use any of the 165 call boxes located on campus, or dial 777-9111 from a cell phone. • Do not leave your backpack, books or other items unattended. This includes times when you are in the library, the cafeteria or one of the fitness centers. • Do not leave valuable items visible in your vehicle. Secure your property. CDs, books, electronics and clothing are subject to being stolen even from a locked vehicle.
Application Guide Follow the instructions on these pages and review the policies listed here to apply for on-campus housing. All freshmen are required to live on campus. Students may be exempted based upon marital status, military status, nontraditional age or medical circumstances. All new incoming freshmen are guaranteed housing. All other students are not guaranteed housing and should apply early for the best chance of securing on-campus accommodations. Freshmen receive an assignment based on their date of application and space availability. In July, room assignments, including roommate and suitemate information and links to other information specific to your assignment, will be available at www.housing.sc.edu.

There are three ways to apply to live on campus: The housing application fee is $50 (nonrefundable), and the room deposit is $50 for fall and $50 for spring (fees are subject to change). 1. Apply Online and Pay Online (MasterCard, Discover, VISA) The best, most efficient and preferred way to apply to live on-campus at the University of South Carolina is through our Web site, www.housing.sc.edu. The application, along with your credit or debit card authorization for $150, will be sent electronically and processed by University Housing without any further action on your part once you click “submit.” Incoming freshmen may modify their application as often as they’d like until May 1. After May 1, roommate changes or additions may not be possible when making room assignments. 2. Apply Online and Pay by Mail Go online to apply, but do not click the “Pay Now” button. Print your application. Write your VIP ID on your check or money order. Roommate Request: Freshmen can only request one roommate. Freshmen cannot room with upperclass students, and AP classes are not considered in determining upperclass hall eligibility.

Housing Policy A binding contractual lease relationship exists between the University and those students living in residence halls. As the institution is committed to the quality of life in the community and within the institution, it is a privilege to live in the residence halls. The University is also committed to fostering responsible adult behavior within a community setting. The University
may make exceptions to this policy based on marital status, military status, nontraditional age or medical circumstances. Requests for exemption should be made in writing to University Housing, Director for Adminstration, University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC 29208. Any person required to register under Article 7, Sex Offender Registry, is prohibited from living in campus student housing. S.C. Code Laws Ann. 23-3-465 (2005). In the event it is determined that any person in campus student housing is subject to the above, law enforcement officials will be informed, and the housing contract will be deemed null and void and terminated immediately without refund.

Additional Notes While asbestos-containing materials serve a wide variety of useful purposes, asbestos fibers are considered dangerous when they are in loose condition and released into the air. Therefore, the University advises students not to disturb the ceilings, pipe insulation or any soft-material surface coverings. The University will continue to monitor the areas that contain asbestos and notify students if there are any special concerns.
