‘Looking for buried treasure’: The benefits and pitfalls of thrifting
Overarching/Main ideas : • • • •
Using what is considered to be “waste” or “outdated” & giving it new life Stopping the pattern that would lead to more waste on the earth Appreciating the unexpected materials We create trash from birth until death, how do we choose to manage that?
Questions: • • • • • •
What can I do to live a more sustainable life? How do the things I buy/ use impact the environment? What are new advances in products that can help preserve the planet? Is it a privilege to not live sustainably by default? When & Why did we unlearn the concept built in us to “thrift”? What else can we as people take out of its box to “reuse” or “thrift”?
www.statenews.com/article/2020/10/the-benefits-and-struggles-of-thrifting?ct=content_open&cv=cbox_featured The Impact of the Fashion Industry on the Global Environment www.thelondoneconomic.com/lifestyle/fashion/the-impact-of-the-fashion-industryon-the-global-environment-258818/ ‘Furniture flipping’: the next big trend in home sustainability? www.theweek.co.uk/951732/furniture-flipping-next-big-trend-home-sustainability

working name... but giving things new life sustainability I chose this topic because I feel that it has many faces & is applicable in many areas of life/ the world. The idea of giving old things new life stretches way beyond buying a vintage t-shirt because “it’s cool & helps the environment.” Sustainability, specifically in the realm of reusing things can be seen in contexts ranging from houses/ architecture, death/ decomposition, fashion, or books (just to name a few). All of these things & so more can work together to positively impact the environment.

concept research Process 03 / 22 / 21
TED talks key words/phrases/concepts: To eliminate waste, we need to discover thrift: ANDREW DENT Nature is very effective at thrift Kids inherently know this idea Grandma knew it any aspect where you make something, think about how that product could potentially be used as a second life, or third life or fourth life. Design in the ability for it to be taken apart. Creative houses from reclaimed stuff: DAN PHILLIPS There is a lot of waste in the building industry Creating new life in the unexpected places Repetition creates patterns… it doest matter what it is “I feature blemish and organic process” Now we have standardized materials ex: trees don’t grow in 2x4 We have confused maslow’s hierarchy of needs My mushroom burial suit: JAE RHIM LEE we have 219 toxic pollutants in our bodies Cremations release those toxins & funerals only have more toxins Infinity mushrooms eat your body and cleanse the toxins Taking responsibility for the burden we have on the planet Decompiculture
Old books reborn as art: BRIAN DETTMER Thinks of his work as a “remix” Pushes structure to sculptural Most information is in digital form–This allows books to be renewed & re thought 3 creative ways to fix fashion’s waste problem: AMIT KALRA ~200 t shirts per person a year in the landfills Fashion industry is the second largest polluter in the world Some clothes can evolve over times We need to start designing clothes with their death in mind. How I’m making bricks out of ashes & rubble in Gaza: MAJID MASHHARAWI “The need for building materials and the need for electricity and energy. Two essential ingredients of life. Both are in lack of supply in Gaza.” In the 2014 war, houses were destroyed, there was no cement / building materials available to rebuild Decided to use the ashes and rubble from the buildings to make building blocks Also developed a company called sunbox, that uses solar power & provides it to business to sell/ install Sharing is caring: families could split the cost of these solar units What we have for granted is a privilege for others
Grow your own clothes: SUZANNE LEE Fermenting tea to make cellulose fibers to use as fabric Organic, no chemicals Can create colors naturally Only grow what we need, no waste Compostable Not a replacement for cotton & things but a step in the direction of microbes

THRIFT
growing into sustainably positive | bright | bold
Thrift is all around us and will ultimately lead to more fulfilling practices that leave you + the planet feeling good. The process isn’t all at once though, these habits will take time to develop + to be comfortable in, but growth is always worth it.

5
METAMORPHOSIS the beautiful change of thrift contrasting | changing | delicate
Sometimes you don’t know how beautiful or useful a thing is until you have the opportunity to use it in an unconventional manner. There are simple changes that if made, can transform a seemingly normal /out of use item the deserved beauty of a second life. The planet and your pocket will thank you.

RE-MIX
reshaping the only world we have funky | unconventional | unique
We need to think uniquely to solve the serious environmental crisis our planet is facing. Finding ways to re-mix the everyday things in our lives to be used again very well may be the answer we are looking for.

OVERLAP
sustainable practice brought together layered | busy | eclectic
We cant continue to isolate and separate the ways we view thrift and reuse. Its time to look at the big picture and find our place in the overlap. Don’t pick a lane, use the whole street– we can do more thank we think.

CHANGING THE PATTERN editing the fabric of our lives to preserve the fabric of the universe comforting | colorful | intentional
At the rate we are filling the world with trash, our planet’s health is in a lot of danger. We need to change these patterns... but where to start? Theres something to be said about the power of the pattern of thrift.

Chelsea Ward is a 28-year-old college graduate who has sparked a mild interest in sustainability after coming across a series of videos online that share the impact that fast fashion has on the environment. She quickly goes down a rabbit hole and finds that this is not the only sustainability issue she should care about. Chelsea was born and raised in College Station, Texas and considers herself to be environmentally conscious. But after feeling small and guilty in all her newfound knowledge, she finds the social media campaign for the “overlap” conference and decides to attend to learn about what she can do to participate in a universal thrift mindset.

In the tangled web of this modern world, the concept of thrift intertwines several threads: fashion, agriculture, architecture, even the human body. Improvement in any one area is insubstantial without similar efforts in the others. Learn how we can change our daily practices to be better citizens of the earth in all areas. We can’t continue to isolate & separate the ways we view thrift and reuse. Its time to look at the big picture and find our place in the overlap. We can do more than we think when we learn about all the ways our lives can change with thrift . Questions? Send them over to Help@Overlap.com

the shapes and colors are easily the most important part of overlap’s brand. each shape & color combination abstractly represents a different intersection of where two areas of thrift overlap. the shapes can be altered slightly and transformed to frame or accent information such as a speaker name.
