Graphic Activism
Process Book | Visc 204 | Lizzy Arnold | Fall 2020
project summary: The Project: This project required me to choose a social justice issue I am passionate about and design two posters that highlights my cause. I also created a piece of editorial art that would accompany a feature story about my issue. The issue: Conversion therapy is any attempt to change a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. As of 2020, there is only legislation protecting minors from the dangerous practices hidden within conversion "therapy" in 20 U.S. states. Why it matters: According to a San Francisco University study, LGBTQ young people who were highly rejected in their home environments were: 8.4x 5.9x 3.4x 3.4x

-Research (2) different organizations / causes that are important to you personally. Make sure these are things that you want to work with for the duration of this project. -Design a simple pdf presentation presenting the causes or groups you would potentially want to work with. Talk us through history, audience, issues, existing messaging, etc. If the organization or cause has existing visuals please collect those as well for your reference. Determine who your audience is? What would they respond to visuals and messaging wise? What is the specific message you want to convey?

hostile architecture
hostile architecture
a trend in urban design which discourages the use of spaces in any way other than the intention of the owner or designer the most harmful examples have come in the way of targeting the homeless community, an already marginalized group, many of whom look for a place to sleep or rest during the day.

Structures like these say “You are not welcome here” to people who need them.
whyelse? else? why We all end up with brutal looking, unfriendly public spaces. It gives a sense of credibility to prejudicial attitudes, and stops people having to address real issues. it’s morally wrong to design people out of their towns and cities. It is a horrendous and prejudicial practice, that planners, fabricators, designers and councils pay huge amounts of money for.

Meet James, a twenty-five year old American man who, despite being a college graduate, had no clue that conversion therapy for minors was still legal in most of the United states. He has lived in California his whole life and graduated from UCLA with a degree in English. He is fairly liberal, cisgenered, straight, but claims to have “lots of gay friends.” He enjoys the finer things in life but that’s coming from a guy who’s parents paid his way through it all. Overall, James has a good heart, he is just ignorant
