The Big Idea: Can Preschoolers Be Depressed?
Its been proven by child psychiatrists that children as young as 2/3 years old can be diagnosed with early onset depression, also called “preschool depression.” With this idea comes a lot of questions and a lot of perspectives to consider– is it okay to give a child such an intense label? How early can this depression truly begin? How can we evaluate young children who haven’t devolved the linguistic sophistication to communicate how they feel? This and many more questions are discussed critically from multiple perspectives: including doctors, researchers, & the parents of a 4-year-old boy with severe early onset depression.

Quotes: Can Preschoolers Be Depressed?
“Mickey lies. Dreams don’t come true.” “Depression was originally seen as an adult problem with origins in childhood, rather than something that existed in children.” “Diagnosis of any mental disorder at this young age is subject to debate. No one wants to pathologize a typical preschooler’s tantrums, mood swings and torrent of developmental stages.” “These kids whine and cry. They don’t want to play. Rather than voice suicidal ideation, they may orchestrate scenarios around violence or death.” “I’ve seen many depressed kids with nurturing, caring parents. We know that psychosocial stress is an important ingredient, but it’s not the only issue. And it’s not a necessary condition either.”

Concept Statement: Can Preschoolers Be Depressed?
Early onset depression is a real occurrence in children; the stigma that surrounds mental illness is often more severe in younger cases, which causes this sickness to go untreated longer. Learning & understanding all sides of “preschool depression” is the way to bring more attention and help to untreated patients.

Concept 1: emotional art time textured, colorful, innocent
Children, especially young ones, use art to express themselves and explore creative urges. Children with depression often don’t have the words and vocabulary to express how they feel in words– but something all kids do is color in their free time. A child doesn’t need to know the words or emotions they feel to draw and express themselves. This concept would play heavily on the textures, lines, colors & styles that kids often use in art.

Concept 2: lost childhood nostalgic, ironic, comfortable
Children who have depression often don’t derive joy from things that children without depression do enjoy. A lot of times, their illness has taken away their ability to be a kid who can enjoy “kid things.” This concept turns those “kid things” around & mourns their loss in a way that places them in an unfamiliar setting/emotion.

Concept 3: waiting room familiar, dynamic, bright
There are always a variety of wild twisty toys in doctors office waiting rooms for children to play with. Children with depression have an invisible illness that effects their mood, which often isolates them from other kids, resulting in them playing alone. This concept takes those crazy contraptions and links them to child illness, specifically depression an the complex nature of it.
