Featuring Visual, performing, youth, Literary and culinary arts
AO F TA . ORG
Celebrating 50 Years There is a great deal to celebrate as we hold the 50th An Occasion for the Arts in 2018. We raise a glass and toast our community, our artists and our sponsors. Our community dreamt of, birthed, supported and grew this weekend into an annual can’t miss event for Williamsburg and the surrounding region. From the founders who first strung chicken wire across Duke of Gloucester Street in 1969 to the 20-person board that now guides the 3-day festival, this show has survived because of community support. Thank you for promoting, volunteering and attending! The show and our community are enriched because of your involvement! Our artists are the show! Whether a first timer in 2018 or Carlton Abbott who has participated in all 50 Occasions! Whether a painter, sculptor or jeweler. Whether local or from a distant state. Our visual artists are put through a rigorous jury selection process with less than 50% of applicants accepted. Once selected they create, select, pack, display and ultimately sell original works that inspire. While Merchants Square and the surrounding streets are a beautiful venue, I dare say they are never as beautiful as

during the first weekend of October every year when our artists enhance the landscape. Our sponsors choose to support the arts and our community with their generosity. The reality of making the festival free and accessible to all who desire to come is achieved through their support. Bank America and Merrill Lynch return as our presenting sponsors and we thank them for their consistent vision and support. Wells Fargo brings us our youth art show, which allows all local schools to participate in a public show. Countless other sponsors return for 2018. Our local government has also supported the 50th show with contributions from both the Williamsburg Area Arts Commission as well as the City of Williamsburg Council. We know that the past 50 years as well as the next 50 are only possible because of the support of our sponsors. As we celebrate 50 years we do look back on the rich history decorated with community involvement, artistic excellence and generous support. We have high hopes that the next 50 can be filled with more of the same. If it is, we all have a great deal to look forward to! -Stuart Honenberger President of An Occasion for the Arts

AN OCCASION FOR THE ARTS
is a 501c3 non-profit organization, founded in 1969 to give the Williamsburg area a grand and inspiring arts experience. Since then it has grown, year by year, to become the area’s premier art and music festival. With additional support from sponsors, the City of Williamsburg, the Greater Williamsburg Chamber & Tourism Alliance and the Williamsburg Area Arts Commission, we have been able to expand our program this year. We are also now able to provide an endowment to the Williamsburg Community Foundation in order to assure continued support of young artists in our area. If you would like to help us sustain quality art in Williamsburg, join us as a volunteer or as a Friend. An on-line donation form can be found at aofta.org

Student Art Show
Youth Art Tent on Prince George Street You haven’t seen all An Occasion for the Arts offers until you’ve visited the Youth Art Show housed on Prince George Street. Students from over 20 schools display more than 700 delightful creations. Every young artist is recognized and trophies go to the top three schools as determined by our judge. Exhibitors include all elementary, middle and high schools in Williamsburg James City County as well as private schools from Williamsburg and the peninsula. The Youth Art Program is sponsored by Monty Hargrove and Wells Fargo Advisors.
Youth Art Activities on Prince George Street With an assortment of fun materials and guidance from The Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center and Junior Women’s Club volunteers, children are able to create their own art. Also, children are invited to have their faces painted at no charge.
The Prince George Street Stage Great entertainers take to the stage, including family-oriented performances by groups such as Rainbow Puppets and William the Conjurer and youth performances, including The Virginia Regional Ballet, Daniel Scruggs and Flute Frenzy. (See the performance listings for the complete schedule.) Local restaurants Retro’s, Aromas, Lokal & Blue Talon Bistro offer food throughout the day to be enjoyed on the street. Baskin Robbins, Kilwin’s and the Peanut Shop offer desserts and treats through the day.
