There is a secret term describing the warmer weather of summer in animal welfare. It’s called Kitten Season (AKA summer). If you walk up to any adoption center across the country, or speak with a shelter volunteer or staff person, you may hear the term used over and over again. Before finding my passion in animal welfare, I had never heard of the term Kitten Season. At first, it sounded absolutely adorable! In my mind, I pictured little balls of fluff raining from the sky. But it happens every year. The weather warms up and cats do... well, what unaltered cats do. I soon found out that instead of raining from the sky, they’re pouring in through our doors, typically in cardboard boxes, or laundry baskets, or shoe-boxes. While they are cute and definitely fluffy… this time of year is the hardest for our small (Albeit, powerful) staff of 23, and the amazing volunteers. It is also hard on the little lives that depend on our care. It’s hard for cats to adjust to living in a shelter environment, and felines tend to linger twice as long as canines in shelters. On top of this, young puppies and kittens are very vulnerable to illness and stress adjusting to shelter life.
LET’S KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOING! It’s a fact. We can’t do this without you. Summer is known to be a time when donations slow down substantially. Even though our team kicks it into overdrive, we must stretch and push our budget to provide the thorough and compassionate care we are known for. This community’s financial support is critical to HHS’s ability to provide top-quality care and assistance to abandoned and neglected pets. The services and level of care we provide are costly and your financial assistance is needed more than ever. Did you know that 93% of our funding is received through private donations and community support? Heritage Humane Society does not receive any funding from the Humane Society of the United States or the ASPCA. Please visit www.heritagehumane.org/donate, to make a one-time gift, or sign up to be a monthly donor. Thank you for your kindness and compassion during the time of year when we need it the most.
As the dog days of summer slowly saunter towards us, just when it appears that we’ve reached our peak, this is when our team truly shines! To see the way we work together, pull together and fight for their lives together; our homeless pets have an army of people working every day to provide second chances. No matter how hard it gets, no matter the struggle, we never give up. This organization is truly a force that blows me away, and the good news is that we are growing by leaps and bounds. There is no stopping now, and I am excited looking toward the future.
SAVING LIVES BY THINKING OUTSIDE THE (CARDBOARD) BOX As I reflect on years past, I see how far we’ve come and see how far we have yet to go! As we grow bigger each day, we are steadfast with our goal; to save as many lives as possible. I am grateful for the immensely talented and impassioned team of staff, volunteers and YOU, our community supporters that leverage our organization to bring about true change for the homeless pets in Williamsburg, and beyond. You know that saying, “If you’re not moving forward, you’re falling behind,” it rings true every day we open our doors at Heritage Humane Society. We strive to think outside the box, to harness technology and wisely use every resource made available to us. We can’t keep doing the same old, same old, and expect different results. So, every day we work to shift a paradigm, to change the way people see adoptable pets. We must harness this passion and streamline ingenuity, because their lives depend on us. I love the eclectic pets that grace our adoption floor. These pets have unique, one-of-a-kind personalities; they are not broken or damaged goods. It is our job to change the perception of old-time opinions and stereotypes of adoptable pets. Even if that means dressing a hound puppy in a hula skirt and placing a luau flower behind her ear, and making her the Virginia Gazette “cover pup.” We are up for the challenge! Want more? Just wait to see what we have up our sleeves to highlight the amazing pets waiting for homes.

THESE NUMBERS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES: Last year Heritage Humane broke records by saving the lives of 1,563 pets: 1,216 Adoptions 279 Pets were reunited with their loving families 67 Pets were transferred to rescue partners We transferred in 365 pets from partner shelters across the state of Virginia and North Carolina. These partner shelters reach out to us when they are running out of time or space! We assisted over 86 pet-owning families facing financial strain through our community outreach initiatives (By having fed, vaccinated and provided low-cost spay/neuter options for 124 dogs and 128 cats)! Last year, 597 volunteers logged 22,524 hour of service; which is equivalent to 11 full-time employees.
