Dear Friends, In November 2018, I accepted the nomination and vote of the AOFTA board and proudly became the next President of An Occasion for the Arts. I am honored and humbled by their confidence that I can carry out this role. I will try my best to carry on the exceptional work and successes provided by Stuart Honenberger for the past four years, and the dedicated leaders before him who have made this show a central contributor to the fabric of our community. I have been a dedicated Board Member for the last 10 years serving as Secretary, Vice President and now enthusiastically and respectfully take on these new responsibilities. Last year we celebrated 50 years of An Occasion for the Arts in grand style with an anniversary celebration attended by supporters both old and new and introduced a new poster created by our grand master of An Occasion, Carlton Abbott. This year I look forward to continuing the traditions that have been built through the years, and maybe, add some new ones. Our exceptional Executive Director, Leo Charette, continues to expand our reach and attention to artists far beyond our region. This year’s show boasts 145 artists from 25 states. Since joining AOFTA in 2015, Leo has implemented so many new ways to recruit, organize, track, retain, and communicate to artists, it is difficult to summarize. He has dramatically changed the artistic process of this show, and all to the benefit of the organization. His presence will be felt for many years to come and we are so very fortunate to have him on our team.

This year we bid “Aloha” to one of our devoted artists “Kingfisher Jewelry”. The husband and wife team of Williamsburg locals Tim and Linda Caviness have been present at An Occasion for 16 years! Their beautiful, hand-crafted jewelry is a sought after collectible. But beyond being an artist in the show, Tim has been an active member of the Board for over 10 years, lending his knowledge as both an artist and a career in finance to serve as the Treasurer of the Board for several years. For many locals, the first stop at the show was the booth at the end of Boundary St, where you knew you could find the exquisite art of Kingfisher Jewelry. You will be sorely missed. This weekend in Williamsburg we celebrate art, in all its forms. It is the culmination of a year of dedicated work from our 20-person Volunteer Board. But the dedication goes far beyond that. This show would not happen without the ongoing support of our community, the small army of volunteers you will see helping at the show and our wonderful sponsors. Bank of America is once again our presenting sponsor and we thank them for their continued support. Our local City of Williamsburg officials and the Williamsburg Area Arts Commission continue to provide necessary funding, permits and security to ensure a successful weekend. So as we move into our next 50 years, I am personally grateful for the place An Occasion for the Arts holds in the history of Williamsburg. This event adds another layer to the rich culture of our community. We hope you will visit with the many talented artists and performers, and partake of the wonderful food and drink. And now, please enjoy the show!

Nancy Wigley President, An Occasion for the Arts
