I’ve used this space over the past few months to extoll the wonders of summer; here’s another shot. As the days slowly shorten, we know there’s a timer on summer fun. Here are some suggestions on how to fill these numbered sunny days. In our cover story, Amanda Williams directs you to some activities best savored in the summer: cooling off out on the water and listening to some live music outdoors in the evenings – perhaps with your favorite local beer in hand. We also offer the rundown on several of those evening concert series, including Friday evenings at Chowning’s Tavern in Colonial Williamsburg, Wednesday evenings for the Summer Breeze concerts at Merchants Square; there are also concerts Aug. 4 at Jamestown Beach Event Park, and at the Watermen’s Museum in Yorktown. All are free. If you want to get really close to nature check out the Butterfly Festival at the Botanical Garden where you’ll be able to enter a tent filled with hundreds of the flitting beauties. When you finally head indoors, make it worth your time: stop by Nawab for some deliciously tasty Indian food or check out Quirks! Handcrafted Goods and Unique Gifts (formerly Quirks of Art) at their new home on Prince George Street. New home, same great stuff. As August winds down, the surest sign of summer’s end is the inevitable and welcome return of students to William and Mary. Can autumn leaves be far behind? .

Get up close with nature at Estuaries Day By Wesley Wright At a local state park, you and the family can enjoy the warm Virginia weather and plenty of outdoor activities on Estuaries Day, Aug. 26. The York River is an estuary, meaning the tide meets the streams there. On Estuaries Day, you can see marine life where

saltwater and freshwater meet, and spend time learning how interesting nature can be firsthand. You can meet family and friends at the park for a day of fun and learning. There is also a fishing pier at the park. The park also has picnic areas and more than 20 miles of hiking trails available. Visitors will have the chance

to take out canoes and kayaks, take boat tours, wagon rides, and more. Estuaries Day activities run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission to the park is free, but there is a $4 parking fee per car. For a glimpse at a previous year’s event, go to http:// bit.ly/2tiEb5K. Information on this year’s event can be found at http://bit.ly/2rXUdOo.

Colonial Taekwondo is a martial arts festival By Christal Searcy In a goodwill exchange program among fellow marital artist across the state a Colonial Taekwondo Festival will be held at Baeplex beginning Aug. 18. The festival is the first of its kind which allows participants to take part in paid and non-paid workshops. Joseph B. Ash is the owner and master instructor of Baeplex and he spoke about the vision of the festival. “The idea that I wanted to do is bring more awareness to the campus and what we’re doing here. We have a very unique campus as far as our region goes on the East Coast. There’s no other campus that’s like this,” said Ash. There’s an intro segment that newcomers can participate in to try new experiences or if they are unfamiliar with martial arts. The workshops will allow

members of the Taekwondo community to reconnect by sharing training experiences and striving to improve mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing. The event will also feature morning meditation and yoga before workshops begin. Martial arts workshops include: traditional forms, Olympic & point sparring, demo team, and breaking. In hopes to gain more fellowship four to five different schools across the state will participate in cross training.

“As opposed to it being competitive in nature it’s gonna be more strengthening the bonds in that community,” added Ash.

A salty taste of summer in Yorktown By Seth Birkenmeyer Whether you’re a townie or a tourist, you can celebrate the twilight of summer with a concert along the beautiful York River. “We have a huge outdoor stage,” said Mike Steen, the education director at the Watermen’s Museum in Yorktown. “It’s a beautiful setting.” The museum is hosting its final Yorktown Music Jamboree of the summer on Aug. 4. Shanty Grass will appear as the opening act, performing songs of maritime bluegrass Americana. Afterward, the Billy Joe Trio will unleash

their brand of funky blues rock on the crowd. “They’re friends of the museum and they’re also some really, really good bands,” Steen said. “They have a pretty big following.” He added that the music fits the nautical theme of the museum while still offering variety for guests, adding up to “great music in a great venue.” He hopes the concerts encourage people to check out the Watermen’s Museum as well as other museums in the area, offering an opportunity to learn in addition to the entertainment. “It’s a fun, family event,” Steen said.

The concert offers a good time for music fans of all ages. Food trucks and vendors will be onsite with goods available for purchase.

WANT TO GO? The concert runs 6-9 p.m. on Aug. 4 at the Watermen’s Museum, 309 Water St., Yorktown. Tickets are $5 for adults. Children 14 and under get in free. Plenty of parking is available onsite. For more information, call 757-887-2641 or visit watermens.org.

cover story

Summertime, and the fun is fleeting By Amanda Williams Although the days are still warm, as September approaches our favorite summer activities start to close up shop. Pools are covered up, canoes and kayaks are dragged back to the boathouse and concert series play their final shows. Before the heat and humidity ebb with the final days of August, don’t miss some of Williamsburg’s favorite summer pastimes.

On the water At Virginia’s 2,500-acre state park on the York River, a park ranger will take adventurous folk onto the water as the sun sets over the marsh ecosystem. York River State Park Ranger John Gresham occasionally leads the special summer paddles. “It’s a great way to experience the wildlife and the bird life and just to be on the water, it’s much quieter than a jet ski or a motorboat,” Gresham said. “We go into the mouth of Taskinas Creek and talk about the ecosystems, what kinds of fish, what kinds of plants and we’ll talk about the marsh environment and talk about some of the mammals in the ecosystem as well.” Gresham said raccoons, muskrats and river otters have been spotted on the paddle. Hosted every Sunday in August, the last excursion leaves the dock at 5:30 p.m., Aug. 27. The two-hour excursion fees are $9 per person in a canoe, $16 for a solo kayak and $11 per person at left: Take a kayak ride along Taskinas Creek at York River State Park. in a tandem kayak. For more information call the park at 757-566-3036 or visit www.dcr.virginia.gov/ state-parks/york-river#recreation. The park is north of Williamsburg at 9801 York River Park Road. For anyone looking for an extra challenge, August is one of the last chances to grab a stand up paddleboard from Paddle On of Williamsburg for a new take on morning Yoga. Instead of downward dog on a mat in the studio, try it on a floating board on the Chickahominy River. Paddle On hosts paddleboard yoga on the river through September when the fall pushes the classes inside. Take advantage of the peaceful morning workout before Mother Nature intervenes. Yoga costs $25 and includes board and gear rental, or just $15 if you bring your own board. Visit paddleonwmbg.com or call 757-254-8492 to reserve a spot. 24

A cold brew If watersports don’t cool you down enough, head over to one of Williamsburg’s craft breweries for a cold one in the beer garden. Gather around one of three fire pits at the Virginia Beer Company, play a round of corn hole on Alewerks Brewing Company’s cozy patio or pair a beer with a food truck meal at Brass Cannon Brewing. Virginia Beer Company is located at 401 Second Street or visit www.virginiabeerco.com. Alewerks is at 197 B Ewell Road or visit www.alewerks.com. Outdoor music, movies The musically inclined won’t want to miss the local folk, bluegrass and Americana bands playing in the heart of Colonial Williamsburg for the summer. From 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. every Friday in August, live music echoes out over Chowning’s Tavern’s patio. Each performance is free. A 12-year Williamsburg tradition, free movies on Prince George Street, ends Labor Day this year. Bring a lawn chair and watch family-friendly features with free popcorn in hand. The Good Dinosaur plays Aug. 6; The Little Mermaid is Aug. 13; “42” (Jackie Robinson Story) plays Aug. 20; The Quiet Man plays Aug. 27 and the season finishes Sept. 3 with Beauty and the Beast. Hosted by Blue Talon Bistro, movies play outside the restaurant at 420 Prince George Street.

Jamestown Jams offer a blast from the past By Seth Birkenmeyer The Jamestown Jams concert series is back at the park at Jamestown Beach for another round of diverse sounds at the scenic spot. “We’re utilizing space that already existed,” said James City County’s tourism event coordinator, Laura Messer, who also praised the openness of the venue. “It’s also sort of a convenient location.” Last year, each concert in the series explored different genres. This year, organizers hoped to assemble a similar variety.

“We thought, this year, it would be fun to do different decades of music,” she said. The idea is to appeal to a wide audience spanning generations. Named after the iconic car featured in the 1980s film classic, “Back to the Future,” the Deloreans will pay tribute to hits of that decade. “Everyone’s excited about the Deloreans,” Messer said. The featured musical acts are based in Richmond, another effort to spice things up. “We’ve tried really hard not to do the same bands that play

throughout the area,” she said. “That makes it a little different.” At least one food truck will be at each concert, along with snow cones. The county partnered with the Arc of Greater Williamsburg to sell beer, with proceeds benefiting the Arc’s efforts working with developmentally disabled adults in the area. The events aim to appeal to tourists and residents alike. Outof-towners get a relaxing Friday night before tackling the bigger attractions around the Historic Triangle, and locals get a family friendly event after work. “It’s just to encourage community,” Messer said.

The Whistle Belly Beer festival is a good idea that keeps getting better: It celebrates Craft Beer Month and supports a good cause. “This year we’re going with a state fair carnival theme. We will have different food stations and games scattered around,” said Lauren Moore, event coordinator. “We will have funnel cakes made out of beer and yeast. We want all the foods to have a beer element.” This is the festival’s third year and Moore said about 1,200 people have attended each of the first two. There will be 30 breweries and 70 different beers available from places such as St. George, Blue Mountain Brewery, Pleasure House and Starr Hill. The festival takes place from 12:30-5 p.m. Aug. 6 at Merchant’s Square. General admission tickets are $50. Proceeds from the festival benefit the Junior Woman’s Club of Williamsburg, which provides scholarships to high school students. VIP tickets are $70 and will allow for early entry and exclusive beers. For more information, visit http://www.whistlebelly.com/

Admire, explore and learn at the Butterfly Festival By Christal Searcy Take in the sun, explore and learn about butterflies at the annual Butterfly Festival at the Williamsburg Botanical Garden. The two-day event features first hand interactions, including the main focus, more than 300 colorful butterflies in two tents. Inside the tents, butterflies can be held, fed, photographed and simply observed. The tents and butterflies are provided by Virginia Master Naturalist Catherine Short. The festival transitions are similar to that of a caterpillar into a butterfly, as educational programs evolve into butterfly craft projects. There will be tours through the garden to see the different plants butterflies are attracted to and why. 32

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2017

The festival is Aug. 5 and 6 from 9am-5pm. Admission is free, but $5 donations to help the nonprofit garden grow are welcomed. The botanical Garden is at 5537 Centerville Road in Freedom Park.

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2017

The name and location changed, but Quirks! is its same, eclectic self By Jimmy LaRoue It has had more than one name, and more than one home over the past 20 years, but it has always been on firm footing with owner Jennifer Raines at the helm of what is now Quirks! Handcrafted Goods and Unique Gifts. For 10 years, Raines had been looking for a location in downtown Williamsburg, but not until April did she get there with relocating Quirks! from The Shops at High Street to Prince George Street, and not without a little encouragement from the late Tom Power, co-owner of The Cheese Shop and Fat Canary. “I felt like we were overlooked for opportunities because we didn’t quite fit the mold,” Raines said. “He always encouraged me to keep pressing because he liked the energy of my business.” Though the store is now a third of its size, due to the new location being Quirks’ only option downtown, Raines said it has been a good fit, and it has allowed her to upgrade the store’s point-of-sale system to an iPad-based one. “My team likes to say we’re small and mighty, and our goal is to constantly strengthen and grow – maybe not in physical size because our footprint goes beyond the walls of our brick and mortar store,” Raines said. The smaller size hasn’t led to a loss in sales. Quite the contrary. “Our foot traffic has increased dramatically, thus an increase in sales both in-store and online. It has definitely been a good change for us,” Raines said. Raines said the name change better reflects the store’s concept as a handcraft gallery. In the beginning when she started the store in 1997, it was known as Kinks, Quirks & Caffeine. In 2011, the name changed to Quirks of Art and in April, it changed again to Quirks! Handcrafted Goods & Unique Gifts. The store sells all kinds of artworks – pottery, glass, jewelry, furniture, metal, mixed media and fiber

– and prices range from $5 to $5,000. Raines said Quirks! is thriving online. “Over the years, we’ve really grown to love our little tribe of locals and visitors who support us and all of our crazy schemes,” Handcrafted merchandise by Raines said. Sticks is sold at the store. The store hosts artPhoto by wendycmiller photography ists visits, community events like Sparkle Friday and now with its non-profit, culturefix – started with her fiancée Steve Rose – helps bring events to WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2017

Williamsburg such as the Winter Blues Jazz Fest, 2nd Sundays Art & Music Festivals, ChowderFest, and The Big Bluesy. The store’s latest venture is what’s being called its “brother store” on the Virginia Capital Trail, called Spoke + Art Provisions Co. Through the changes, the store has remained its quirky, eclectic self. “While the products at Quirks! will continuously change,” Raines said, “the heart of my business has grown and evolved into an interactive community hub. That’s something I am really proud of.”

the college of william & mary

The fourth and final phase of the state-of-the-art Integrated Science and Wellness Center will begin soon. Photo courtesy of The College of William & Mary

College forges ahead with Integrated Science building By Wesley Wright The College of William and Mary will open the 2017-18 school year — its last under president Taylor Reveley — will new facilities and programs to boot. The college is still working on its Integrated Science and Wellness Center, a state-of-the-art facility whose third phase was celebrated near the end of 2016. In 2008, President Taylor Reveley and members of the Board of Visitors cut a ceremonial ribbon on the center, which noted the first phase of the building. At the time, university leaders called the building a boon for the institution. It’s specifically designed for students involved in interdisciplinary work at the college, so those with varied interests will enjoy it. The fourth and final phase, which will integrate the college’s computer science and mathematics departments, will begin soon. August will also bring a new dorm online, a building that was formerly a Days Inn. The William 44

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2017

and Mary Real Estate Foundation bought the dorm and will lease it to the college. The move is one of many the college has planned as it renovates some of the dormitories around campus. Richmond Hall, the new building, is located at 902 Richmond Road. The college also will celebrate the legacy of some groundbreaking women in the fall of 2017. Fifty years ago, three women became the first AfricanAmerican students at the college. Lynn Briley, Karen Ely, and Janet Brown Strafer will be honored throughout the semester for their part in integrating the college decades ago. All three returned to the college in 2011 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their graduation, and upon their return, leaders from William and Mary will put their accomplishments into the context of the campus. In previous years, leaders have admitted the college did not match the demographics of the country, and bringing in those women helped William and Mary move toward a student body that better reflects the makeup of the nation.

Seniors and pets: a bond that makes a difference By Victoria Terrinoni Several studies over the years have proven the relationship between pets and senior citizens is beneficial to both parties, both physically and psychologically, but what happens if a senior cannot afford or is otherwise unable to take full-time care of a pet? Two organizations in Williamsburg run programs to address that issue. While the Heritage Humane Society doesn’t have a formal program, many seniors volunteer to work with both the 46

dogs and the cats, said Kim Laska, executive director. “A lot of seniors are involved as volunteers or fosters because they are not looking for a longterm relationship,” Laska said. The volunteers take the animals for walks, feed them and socialize with them. “It helps the seniors have a sense of fulfillment and joy. They know when an animal is adopted, they had a part in that happening,” Laska said. Because the volunteers work with the animals so much, Laska said, they are able to ask the right

questions and help make the right match with clients looking for a pet. Heritage Humane Society also has many seniors involved in its auxiliary program which raises

funds for the shelter. Another local program is the Visiting Canine program run through Williamsburg Faith in Action, where therapy dogs are matched with seniors for a weekly one hour in-home visit. Ashleigh Washington, deputy executive director, spearheaded the Visiting Canine program in May 2016, even though she confessed she is not a dog person. Financial support for the program comes from a private donation through the Williamsburg Community Foundation, as well as general support from James City County, City of Williamsburg, York County, local churches and individuals. Faith in Action is a non-profit organization that runs several programs for seniors in the area. Washington said the program gives seniors who live on their own something to look forward to each week. “A lot of retirees in Williamsburg don’t have family around to visit with regularly.” All the dogs are trained therapy dogs in accordance with guidelines from Therapy Dogs International. The client requests a certain size dog and then are matched with a dog and a handler. They develop a relationship with the handler as well, Washington said. “Not only is the person interacting with the dog, but they are conversing with the handler too,” she said. Pet visits are one-on-one and not at a senior living facility. Clients can refer themselves or be referred by several county and city agencies dealing with seniors. For more information on either program, call the Heritage Humane Society at 757-221-0150 or Faith in Action at 757-2585890.

Nawab more than an Indian restaurant By Victoria Terrinoni “Nawab is more than a restaurant to our family. It is kind of a home,” said Shaveta Arora, niece of the family-run restaurant’s founder, Ashok Arora. And that is what the Arora family wants its customers to feel – like they are home. “We’ve built a relationship with the community. We’ve been here more than 20 years,” said Nitesh Arora, Ashok’s son and business development manager. The first Nawab Restaurant opened in Norfolk in 1992 when

the Aroras moved to Hampton Roads from Long Island. A second restaurant opened in Virginia Beach followed by the Williamsburg location and then Newport News. It is known for its lunch buffet, something not normally seen in an Indian restaurant. Indian food consists of a wide variety of foods from different regions of that country. People often equate the food with spicy, but it doesn’t have to be. “The buffet allows people to see and try different dishes,” Nitesh said. The restaurant also has a full menu including biryanis, vegetarian and tandoori items. intensely hot fire of about 900 degrees. The tandoor is essential in any Indian restaurant, Nitesh said. Nitesh Arora is in the midst of redoing the menus for the four restaurants. He said old favorites will still appear while some new items will be added based on what the community wants. The wine menu is also undergoing changes including a new Indian wine that the restaurant has an exclusive contract with. “We like to do traditional foods, but make them stand out. We also like to try new items,” Nitesh said. The restaurant also caters several different types of events such as business meetings, weddings, parties. Catering is all part of making that community connection. “People trust us enough to be part of their special day,” Nitesh said. Although Ashok started the restaurants, plus four other sister restaurants independently owned and operated by other family members, he trusts his restaurant managers to run the day-to-day business. He is always available to continued on next page

Nitesh, however, is a jack of all trades, sometimes managing a restaurant, sometimes doing marketing, sometimes solving problems. “I basically make sure we are meeting expectations,” he said.
