New treasures for the home Chickadees in the Pavilion Shops in Lightfoot is never the same store. On any given day you may find distinct furniture, lighting, artwork and home decor that has arrived at the store from across the world. “It is like Christmas everyday with the new things that come in,” said owner Julia Carter. “It is not just one person’s choice of decor that we have here. You have a big variety and it is more interesting than going to a furniture store where everything may be chosen by a decorator.” The store has more than 1,800 consignors who bring in merchandise. Many of those who consign also shop regularly at the store to peruse the new treasures. “A lot of people do enjoy shopping here because there is so much to choose from, and we have an interesting selection,” Carter said. “There are some people who come and spend a couple of hours to see everything.” The store has recently celebrated its fourth year in business. It has steadily grown over the past years and has earned a reputation for reasonable prices and distinctive merchandise. “The things we are getting in now are fabulous,” she said. “We even have people from out of town who come to Williamsburg to visit all the consignment shops, including us. Williamsburg has become known for their consignment shops.” One of the most unusual items Carter has sold in the store was a large dancing elephant made out of 6

papier mache. One woman bought a couple of art prints which she later found to be worth a lot of money. “You just never know what you may find,” she said. Carter said she tries to keep her prices much lower than retail. Merchandise is marked down each month and there “is always a sale going on.” “You can get a really great buy if you find something that has been here for a few months,” she said. – Ann Efimetz

Taste of Spain at La Tienda La Tienda offers a taste of Spain without having to leave our area. The store opened on Jamestown Road in November 2010 and since has been offering folks products from Spain ranging from Jamon Iberico ham, to artisanal Spanish cheeses. There are freshly baked breads, hand painted ceramics, unique Spanish sweets, fine olive oils and a large selection of hard-to-find Spanish and South American wines. La Tienda began as a Spanish gourmet online retailer in 1996. The Harris family, who owns, manages and operates the company, decided to open the retail store. Some of the more popular events at the store are wine tastings which introduce people to the range of products La Tienda offers. “We have wine tastings several times a month and occasionally we do olive oil and vinegar tastings as well,” said Laurie Pearce Hager, of La Tienda marketing. “These are free and open to the public and it is always a pleasure to see a big crowd.” People are always welcome to visit the store anytime and sample an array of delicious tapas like olives, chorizo, bread and olive oils. “It’s a great opportunity to enjoy a small taste of our more popular products,” she said. Every Friday La Tienda serves fresh paella, cooked by Carmen Nunez and Lourdes Pierce, both of whom are from Spain. “We make paellas with seafood and with butifarra and chorizo,” she said. “Many folks come by and pick up their orders to-go or choose to dine in and enjoy the ambiance.” 8

Some of the most popular items are anchovystuffed olives, fresh bread from Galicia, chorizo, Manchego cheese, magdalenas and Señorío de Vizcántar Olive Oil. “Because La Tienda's mission is to support artisan vendors and small family producers, the vast majority of our products are unique to the U.S. market,” she said. People say they shop at the store for its home-like atmosphere. “They love the experience of immersing in the sights, smells and tastes of Spain,” she said. “For some, the experience of shopping at La Tienda brings back memories of special travels made to Spain or of growing up in Spain. For others who are new to Spanish culture, our store is a welcoming invitation to explore the wonderful diversity of Spanish foods.” – Ann Efimetz

Being nominated and actually being named a school of excellence, is a bit overwhelming. We were nominated for this honor by the NLSA validator when she made her visit to us last May. At that time she mentioned something about the nomination but frankly I did not give it another thought. Will it effect enrollment?

change because of this honor. We received this honor in part because of our strong curriculum and programming. We will continue to use the Creative Curriculum in our preschool classrooms and Saxon curriculums in our Kindergarten. What has the feedback from parents/congregation been like? As you can imagine the feedback has been very positive. Since the congregation decided to start the school they decided to have a high standard of education. This honor is a testament to their expectations, the support of the church, and the ability of our fine faculty and staff. What is the future for the school? I believe the future is very bright for King of Glory Preschool and Kindergarten. Next year we will offer for the first time programs for children age two and a half. We are always looking for ways to expand and meet the needs of our community. – Ann Efimetz

Currently we have 165 children in our school. We hope that this honor helps build our enrollment and shares with the community what we are striving to offer both academically and spiritually. Does it effect the curriculum? Our curriculum /programming does not

Whistle stop in Williamsburg BeSledgehammer-swinging railroad workers laid tracks down the length of Duke of Gloucester Street in 1881 – to the exhilaration and annoyance of Williamsburg’s citizenry. The laboring gangs moved repetitiously along the ready-made roadbed, a locomotive pushing before it flatbed cars loaded with creosoted wooden ties, steel rails and spikes, until they reached a meadow a mile east of town. There they met head-on rails laid westward from the James River waterfront at Newport News. On Oct. 16 the superintendent of construction drove the unifying spike as 600 workers burst into applause. The supply train steamed on to Newport News, past Lee Hall where construction had begun on a provisional spur line to Yorktown. It is hard to imagine that laying rail tracks through the center of Williamsburg was so little documented, especially since it disrupted the community’s main thoroughfare. Brief news stories about it appeared Oct. 19 in the Richmond newspapers on the 100th anniversary of Cornwallis’s surrender at Yorktown. No photographs have been found to confirm it, but by then locomotives had chugged through Williamsburg with a few passenger coaches filled with militiamen eager to parade before President Chester A. Arthur at Yorktown’s centennial celebration. The “Peninsula Extension” of Collis P. Huntington’s C&O Railway connected Richmond, and points westward to Cincinnati, with Newport News and the coal piers on the James River that Huntington was building, and the shipyard that he would soon install. Edward H. Lively, a printer and Williamsburg’s postmaster, watched as J.J. Gordon’s hammer drove home the unifying spike in the extension. Later that day he issued a commemorative broadside: “The rails from both directions came together and kissed, 12

and I thought to myself that the morning and evening stars sage a happy euphony to honor the occasion.” The rails were still being put down on the Yorktown spur as a locomotive slowly advanced with militia regiments from Kentucky, Massachusetts and Virginia. The inaugural trip on the night of Oct. 18 took 14 hours, “the track being finished just ahead of us,” T.B. Benactrin remembered three decades later. The next day a locomotive with a couple of coaches departed Newport News for Yorktown, arriving at 1 p.m., “too late,” recalled George Benjamin West, “for the grand parade that day.” In Williamsburg, the decision on whether the C&O would take the designated route around or a temporary route through Williamsburg was settled only months earlier. In July, The Washington Post reported, and the Richmond Dispatch repeated: “It is stated as a fact that the people of Williamsburg were opposed to any railroad passing through their town because they did not want any of their streets cut up.” The City Council minutes don’t report who was opposed. If the C&O had to come through Williamsburg, there was only way – Main Street, as the Duke of Gloucester was known at the time. Council had to grant permission Tracks along Main Street would restrict intersections and pedestrian crossings, and locomotives would frighten horses. The lives of families who lived on Main Street, including those of eight councilmen, would be interrupted. Council agreed to let the C&O expedite construction of the Peninsula Extension by using Main Street for three months and thus delay construction along the designated permanent route just north of town. In return, the C&O would erect a bridge over the tracks for Capitol Landing Road. When the tempoWILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, MAY 2012

rary track was pulled up, Main Street was to be “left in as good condition as when found.” But the matter wasn’t settled. Construction engineers wanted permission to run a temporary rail siding “on the south of Main Street beginning at or in front of the Courthouse and thus extending 600 feet each way.” Council acquiesced and requested the C&O “put in passable condition the back street on the south side of town,” that is to say Francis Street. The effect was to give the city a second east-west through road. Well after the centennial celebration ended, council granted the railroad “until the first day of February 1882 or by such time due diligence they complete their road on the main line outside the city limits.” Precisely when the tracks were taken up is not known, but in early March, Mayor John A. Henley said that Main Street was “almost impassable.” Council shot off a letter to the railway general manager in Richmond demanding “our Main Street” be “put in proper condition.” At the advent of spring weather, the C&O put a notice in the Richmond papers announcing that as of May 1 trains would run daily (except Sunday) to Williamsburg. The station was located at the end of North England Street. Regular rail service began without fanfare or ceremony, no locomotive festooned with bunting; no speeches, no vociferous cheers, no presentation of first tickets to the conductor. Otherwise, surely a photograph would have been taken.

Spring has arrived Spring arrived early this year, approximately a month before it generally does. That means the flowers, trees and other annuals blossomed in March. It put people’s minds in the spring spirit sooner than usual. Spring is a lovely time in our area. There are several parks and areas that are conducive to relaxation, picnics and other outdoor activities. The Colonial Parkway is lovely any time of year, but especially during spring. The 23-mile scenic roadway stretches from the York River at Yorktown to the James River at Jamestown. Along the way there are turnouts, scenic vistas, beaches and green areas to enjoy. – Ann Efimetz

A gem of a store Are you looking for that certain piece of jewelry that will bedazzle? Look no further than Johnstown Jewelers on Jamestown Road. Owner John Showah has more than 30 years experience in the jewelry business and knows how to create pieces that will last a lifetime. “I do mostly custom pieces for local people,” Showah said recently. “I talk with clients who have things they would like to have reset or remodeled. Family heirlooms can be remodeled and worn to keep the sentimental value.” Showah said he customizes the designs to meet the desires of the customer. “They know me and they trust my judgement,” he said. “They give me an idea of what they are looking for and we order things and customize them to fit their needs. It is very personalized for each one.” Over the years, Showah has introduced pieces which have become extremely popular including frog pendants. Currently he carries unique horse jewelry shaped as personalized initials. “People really like that and there is a lot of interest in this jewelry,” he said.

“They are very well made and are from an artist in New York who has done designs of Faberge eggs.” Showah said he recently finished a custom opal pendant he made from scratch, designing the entire piece from a wax model through polishing and finishing the stone. “Not too many stores do that,” he said. Showah said he also does custom engraving on site. His attention to providing excellent customer service has kept his business thriving. “If you don’t give the service, then you go out of business,” he said, adding he also repairs jewelry ranging from simple repair to repair of more intricate pieces. Sizing is also done on the premises. Showah laughed when he described his clientele. “There are lot of ladies in Williamsburg. If we would count on the men, we would be out of business.” – Ann Efimetz

HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE! Is this your first Colonial Williamsburg visit or your first visit in a long time? Here are sites we recommend you see: The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg (Allow at least an hour) The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum features worldclass English and American silver, ceramics, paintings, prints and textiles dating from 1600 to 1830. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum is the first museum dedicated solely to American folk art in the United States. Peyton Randolph House (Allow 45 minutes) Home to one of Virginia’s leading politicians, this was the site of important social and political gatherings. The backyard shows the range of work undertaken by enslaved men and women and their interaction with the white household. R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse (Allow 30 minutes) Guests at R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse experience an interpretive tour that reveals the pre-Revolutionary significance of the establishment — a gathering place for the politically connected as well as for the socially ambitious — before concluding with an opportunity to enjoy a sample tasting of period coffeehouse beverages – coffee, tea or chocolate. Courthouse (Allow 20 minutes) County and city courts provided local justice both in civil and criminal cases. Participate in a wide variety of court trials in which lives, liberties and property come into contest. Magazine (Allow 30 minutes) The Magazine, Williamsburg’s arsenal, was the warehouse for gunpowder and firearms belonging to the colony and Commonwealth of Virginia. Printing Office and Bookbindery (Allow 20 minutes) Printed items such as newspapers, political notices and manuals played a key role in the spread of information before and during the Revolution. Silversmith (Allow 30 minutes) Skilled workers at the Golden Ball make jewelry, bowls, coffeepots and other items of precious metals. Wigmaker (Allow 20 minutes) At this shop, guests can watch as accomplished hands style hair and weave wigs from a wide variety of materials. Anderson Blacksmith Shop and Public Armoury Open The industrial site that helped forge the American Revolution is open to guests after more than a year of reconstruction. Anderson’s Blacksmith Shop and Public Armoury reflects the beehive of activity present during the American Revolution, with numerous trades working together in support of the American war effort: blacksmiths forging and repairing hardware, tinsmiths fashioning all sorts of military accoutrements and other trades artisans repairing and rebuilding military arms while historic foodways interpreters recreate the meals the kitchen provided to Anderson’s diverse 40-strong work force. The 21st-century purpose of the blacksmith’s and armoury site is to convey this complex and diverse scene: to engage guests in the hustle and bustle of work; to impress upon them the daunting tasks confronting the fledgling republic as it took on the greatest military power in the world; and to convey some of the economic, political, and social factors that contributed to the eventual success of the war effort and the achievement of independence. The Anderson’s Blacksmith Shop and Public Armoury project represents another step depicting Williamsburg’s leading role in the American Revolution — when former royal subjects took on new freedoms and responsibilities as self-governing citizens of an independent republic. For more information, call 1-800-HISTORY or visit the Colonial Williamsburg Regional Visitor Center, Greenhow Lumber House Ticket Office or Merchants Square Ticket Office.

One of the event’s perennial favorites is the Parade of Marine Life, in which children and adults from around Tidewater walk through the VIMS campus wearing handmade creature costumes including seahorses, jellyfish, flounder, dolphins and blue crabs. Visitors will be able to speak with scientists at display booths to learn how they help manage blue crabs, restore oysters, survey fish populations, unravel biodiversity, monitor water quality, find and remove “ghost” crab pots, and reduce the accidental capture of diamondback terrapins. Other activities will introduce VIMS’ international work in Antarctica. Youngsters will have the chance to learn with fun crafts and activities in the Children’s Pavilion. Kids and parents will also have the chance to collect and observe organisms from the York River, and to tour the institute’s teaching marsh and shellfish hatchery. In addition to these daylong activities, Marine Science Day offers a series of events that begin at specific times. These include 10-minute mini-lectures on flounder, VIMS’ osprey cam, and sharks and a seafood cooking demonstration. Visit www.vims.edu/msd for more information.

area events

Remembering those who served Local events will commemorate those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. There are several events throughout the area which mark the day. The annual ceremony is presented by the Combined Veterans Organizations of Williamsburg and will be held at 10 a.m., Memorial Day, May 28 at Williamsburg Memorial Park. It will feature a special guest speaker, Williamsburg Pipes and Drums, Toano Saxophone Ensemble, Williamsburg and James City County Fire and Veterans Color Guard. Various singers will perform patriotic songs and Craig Davenport will serve as the master of ceremonies. Yorktown hosts a Memorial Day ceremony at noon at York Hall on Main Street. The event includes the posting of colors, historical re-enactors, a guest speaker, the placing of flowers, and the presentation of awards to student winners of the “York County Remembers” Poster Essay Contest. It is hosted by the York County Historical Committee. Colonial Williamsburg presents a modern service honoring military veterans who died while serving

their country. Wreaths will be placed at the Palace, Bruton Parish Church, and the French Grave site to honor those interred in or near those sites from the American Revolution and the War Between the States. A procession with Fife and Drum support will begin at the Palace and proceed to the sites. Prayers will be given and musket volleys fired in the course of the programming. Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. Memorial Day was first observed on 30 May 1868 when a special ceremony was held at the Arlington National Cemetery where flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers. Memorial Day was originally known as “Decoration Day”. The Photo by Ann Efimetz alternative name of “Memorial Day” was first used in 1882. Memorial Day was first enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War, but its scope was expanded after World War I to include all U.S. men and women who died while in the military service.

Songs of the spirit Cantori Vocal Ensemble will present its spring concert at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, May 20 at the Catholic Campus Ministry located at Harrison Avenue and Richmond Road. The concert title is “Walkin’ in the Spirit,” which is also the title of the first piece the ensemble will sing. The concert is free, but donations in support of Cantori will be gratefully accepted. The group’s first CD, “Be My Love” will also be available for sale. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, MAY 2012

The program will feature a variety of spirituals, some in dialect and with the inflections spirituals demand. Local musician Timothy Seaman will again play with the group, having been featured at the ensemble’s winter concert. Some of the spiritual arrangements feature soulful flute playing, which Seaman will play in accompaniment.
