WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2013

By October, long sultry summer days are a thing of the past and the cooler autumn temperatures have arrived. We do say goodbye to summer, but hello to a time in Williamsburg that is filled with excitement and fun. October begins with one of our area’s signature events, An Occasion for the Arts. For the last three years, the festival, now celebrating 45 years, has spanned a weekend. An Occasion offers great opportunities to see and purchase distinctive works of art by talented artisans. An Occasion is one of my favorite events to attend. Not only do I get to see many familiar faces, but I see some great performances on the three stages and take in the youth art. I am always impressed by the level of talent by area kids! Also this month is the annual Italian Festival sponsored by the Colonial Italian American Organization. If you have never attended, this is the year to do it! The weekend festival will be held on the grounds of Walsingham Academy, which graciously shares its campus with CIAO for the event. The Italian Festival boasts artisans and vendors, delicious food, fun kid’s activities and some wonderful entertainment by area musicians and vocalists. Proceeds benefit a scholarship program for collegebound youth. The month ends with Halloween, which probably ranks with Christmas among kids (and some adults), as their favorite holiday. October is a great time to visit Busch Gardens and experience HowlO-Scream. As you read this issue, you will notice a few new features which will be continuing each month. “What’s Cooking” will feature one of our area’s chefs. We begin the series with David Everett of Blue Talon Bistro, The Trellis and DoG Street Pub. “Pet Corner” is designed to give pet lovers some information about owning a four-legged best friend. “A Great Find” will feature articles from area consignment or antique stores that may be the ideal fit for your home or business. Let me know what you think! E-mail me at aefimetz@vagazette.com. Happy October!

what’s cooking?

David Everett By Ann M. Efimetz When you sit with David Everett, owner and chef at The Trellis, Blue Talon Bistro and DoG Street Pub, you have the sense you are sitting with someone who knows the recipe for success. Everett said his affinity for food has roots in childhood when growing up in Florida. Not only did he work in the kitchen at the most popular restaurant in Melbourne Beach, but his mother, who “was grounded in good cooking,” provided a solid foundation for his passion to grow. Everett’s ties to Williamsburg were always strong, often visiting here to see his grandfather, Dr. J. R. Tucker. When he moved to Williamsburg a little more than two decades ago, he landed a job as food and beverage manager and executive chef at Ford’s Colony where he stayed for more than 14 years, distinguishing it as a nationally recognized restaurant. About nine years ago he sensed it was time to make a bold move. “It was a good time to leave,” Everett said in a recent interview at The Trellis. And that’s when he opened the Blue Talon Bistro. Immediately the restaurant garnered rave reviews. The restaurant quickly became popular with the locals and gained a steady clientele of visitors who were hungry for comfort food prepared with panache. Three years ago, he bought The Trellis from Marcel Desaulniers. A little over a year ago he opened The DoG Street Pub in the former SunTrust Bank adjacent to The Trellis. When the Nancy Thomas Gallery recently closed, Everett saw the chance to occupy that space with The Blackbird Bakery. Although the food and atmosphere at the locations are different, Everett, who remains intensely involved in each restaurant, has a goal that underlies each operation. “There is a level of satisfaction in serving the public,” he said. “Everyone has to eat, and we like to be able to offer a place for them to come and to do that well. We hope that is what people think when they come to our restaurants. They are getting good quality food for their money.” The restaurants prime locations bring lots of visibility. Everett enjoys sponsoring various events, including the annual Turkey Trot 5K and Movies on Prince George Street. He participates whenever he can with sponsorship and support. “For us, it is part of our responsibility,” he said. “The public supports us, and if people support you, you should support them back. We get asked to do a lot, and we try to support the things that help the community.”

The fast-paced world behind the scenes isn’t apparent in the relaxed atmosphere at The Trellis and Blue Talon. Everett has made it a point to distinguish each locale with great food and a place to enjoy friends and family. He wants people to know that The Trellis, which has a reputation for being a “special occasion” place, is the ideal place to go for a casual or formal dining experience. And, he added, the bar at The Trellis is unparalleled locally. “The best cocktails in town are at The Trellis,” he said matter-of-factly. “The staff takes a lot of pride in the product they make when crafting drinks. It is a serious business.” Everett who frequently visited New York speakeasystyle bars wanted to recreate the atmosphere here. “I wanted there to be a bar as good as those because I wanted to go to it,” he said with a laugh. Everett can’t see himself anywhere else. Although his restaurant ownership responsibilities limit his time in the kitchen, he still is actively involved with the restaurants and the staff who continue his goals. He is grateful for their expertise and their role in the continued success of the restaurants. “I have more than two hundred employees who are making a living and their livelihood,” he said with a smile. “They are buying houses and cars and having families from something that I’ve put together. And that is pretty cool.” *See page 42 for a delicious bread pudding recipe and page 59 for a scrumptious black bean soup recipe.

A world awaits beneath the street

By Ann M. Efimetz Ever taken the stairs down to Mermaid Books on Prince George Street? The staircase adjacent to the SunTrust Bank that leads to the quaint store transports you to a hidden Williamsburg treasure. Owner Hatley Mason purchased the store from Aurise Eaton in 2009 to prevent the store from closing. According to Mason, the book store’s genesis was 1977 when Mary Lewis Chapman opened a bookshop in the small building behind Aromas, the Book House. Despite of having several bookstores around Merchants Square at that time: The Book Press, Brentano’s, Rizzoli’s, and Scribner’s, she saw a need for a good used bookstore. “We have carried on that the idea that in this historyoriented community, there is still a need for quality used and rare books at an affordable price,” Mason said recently. 12

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2013

The store carries and specializes in volumes of books ranging from archeology of Colonial Virginia to Chinese cooking. There are books on gardening, philosophy, photography, humor, art history, black-smithing, nature, health, parenting, antiques, classics, poetry and history. “We are working hard to create a store that’s not just about selling books, especially online,” he said. “Mermaid Books is about giving the visitor a rare experience of a unique place filled not only with old books, but with all kinds of curiosities and treasures to be found.” And there are rare items aficionados can add to their collection. “It’s not too hard for visitors to the store to understand why a 16th century Latin theology book is valued at four hundred dollars,” Mason said. “But they may be surprised to find a first edition of Harry Potter that they could have bought for $16.95 in 1998 and sells for more than six hundred dollars today.”

When asked about the future of books with the onset of online publishing, Mason replied. “Books are so opposite of our current media-driven culture where the latest devices or means of delivery can seem more important than content. I see a future where traditional books will be treasured, not for their utility but instead as an aesthetic and literary experience.” People who visit the store have asked Mason for some obscure volumes, including a copy of Dante’s “Divine Comedy” in the original 14th century Venetian dialect. “If such a book does exist,” Mason stated. “No one seems to have one.” Sometimes the requests are less lofty. “We love to help people,” he said. “For instance, the times we can simply reunite someone with a favorite book they loved and lost in childhood. Another time, we were able to provide the same 1970-edition cookbook that a mom had received herself when she was a bride to give to her bride-to-be daughter.” Why the name Mermaid? “Aurise chose the name in part because of a line from an Emily Dickinson poem referring to ‘visiting the mermaids in the basement.’ Mason also cites an example of their universal appeal; “One day an eight-year-old girl came down our stairs excitedly yelling ‘Mermaids! Mermaids!” So I asked ‘Do you like mermaids?’ to which she replied, ‘Doesn’t everyone?’’’

Up Close with her costumes

By Ann M. Efimetz Fans of Glenn Close will get a chance to see some of the costume pieces that defined some of her most legendary roles. The Muscarelle Museum will showcase several of the costumes and accessories worn by Close as the famous characters whom she has created. The pieces are from her personal collection and will give those who attend a rare peek at the elaborate costumes. There will be plenty of opportunity to see the exhibit, “Glenn Close: A Life in Costume.” It runs until Sunday, Jan. 12. The exhibition opened the weekend that Close and her husband David Shaw received the Cheek Medal Award at the College of William and Mary. The ensembles on display include some from her iconic characters from Close’s career in film, theater and television, including Norma Desmond, “Sunset Boulevard;” Albert Nobbs, “Albert Nobbs;” Alex Forrest, “Fatal Attraction;” Cruella De Vil, “101 Dalmatians and 102 Dalmatians” and Patty Hewes, “Damages.” Close is one of the most wellknown graduates from William and Mary. She graduated with a double major in theater and anthropology in 1974. She went on to star in a variety of movies, plays and TV roles. She was nominated for her first Tony Award in 1980 for her portrayal of Charity in the play “Barnum.” She has won three Tony Awards for Best Actress for “The

Real Thing,” “Death and the Maiden,” and “Sunset Boulevard.” She has six Academy Award nominations for her roles as supporting and leading actress in feature films, including “The World According to Garp,” “The Big Chill,” “Fatal Attraction,” “Dangerous Liaisons,” and “Albert Nobbs.” She has also won two Golden Globes for “Damages” and “The Lion in Winter.” Her Emmys are for “Damages,” 2008 and 2009, and “Serving In Silence:The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story.” In a press release, Aaron De Groft, Muscarelle director, expressed excitement about the exhibit. “We delight in the generosity of Glenn Close in sharing these memorable costumes with her alma mater.” These pieces are treasures in the world of popular culture, and we are so pleased to be able to offer the public the opportunity to view them in person.” Close, who will be on campus to open the exhibit, said in a press release, “I am thrilled to bring this exhibition to the place that prepared me so well, on so many levels, for my life and my career.” Close also headlined the second annual William & Mary Arts & Entertainment Festival Want to go? Glenn Close: A Life in Costume will be on view at the Muscarelle Museum of Art from Sunday, Sept. 29 until Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014. For more information, call 757-221-2700 or visit www. wm.edu/muscarelle. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, and noon-5 p.m. Sunday. The exhibit fee is $15. Admission is free for museum members, William and Mary faculty, staff and students and children under 12. Photos courtesy Muscarelle Museum of Art

area events

Italian

for the weekend By Ann M. Efimetz The 11th annual Italian Festival sponsored by the Colonial Italian American Organization will be held Oct. 12-13 on the grounds of Walsingham Academy. The weekend event is typically attended by hundreds of locals and visitors looking for a way to taste the flavor of Italy without having to leave our area. One of the hallmark events is a wine-tasting, with vintages offered by seven Virginia wineries. There are also several chances to purchase food from restaurants specializing in wItalian fare. For Joe Finelli, in his ninth year as festival chairman, the event is a chance for people to take part in an event that incorporates food, spirits and entertainment. “The original idea for the festival was a desire by some members to create a festival here similar to what they remembered from their hometowns before they moved to the Williamsburg area,” Finelli said. “Basically, Italian food, entertainment, arts and crafts vendors, and activities for the entire family.” The festival has continually grown over the years. The first two festivals were held on the grounds of the Williamsburg Winery. Since moving to Walsingham Academy, the event has taken off. Not only do those who attend enjoy the atmosphere, but vendors and entertainers are eager to continue their affiliation. “We want the food vendors, arts and crafts vendors, the wineries, professional vendors, and the entertainers to do well and also enjoy their time at the festival,” he said. “An example of

our success is that thirty or thirty-five arts and crafts vendors sign up even before we begin the festival planning cycle.” Like the festival, membership in CIAO has increased. It began with about 50 members and now has nearly 200. Most of them take part in helping to organize the festival. Proceeds are earmarked to help youth. “They are largely used to promote our strong belief in education which comes from our upbringing where we were encouraged to get a good education to ensure a good shot at the American dream,” Finelli said. “We are nearing the $200,000 mark in scholarships and other educationrelated grants that CIAO has given out

since the inception of the festival.” That desire to showcase youth has carried over to the festival where more local youth are now featured entertainers over the course of two days. Want to go? General admission is $5 in advance, $8 at the gate. Wine Tasting, 21 years and older, is $12 in advance and $15 at the gate. Admission is free for active duty military and their families. Free for all children 15 and under accompanied by an adult. For more information visit www.ciaowilliamsburg.org.

a great find

By Ann M. Efimetz This month’s Great Find is a Dutch Staartklock from the early 18th century. This distinctive and historical piece can be found at DoveTail Antiques at the Gallery Shops in Lightfoot. Store owners Jeff and Sue Ade obtained the piece about four years ago from an exclusive collection in New England. It is a rare find. “It is extremely rare that you

would find this privately,” Jeff Ade said. “This caliber of piece is usually in museums.” The Dutch piece features the original 30-hour movement, painted dial depicting the Dutch fleet being protected by an angel, three original glasses and Rip Van Winkle waking up on the clock base plate. The clock movement has been rebuilt, cleaned and oiled and strikes the bell on the hour and half hour. The piece is selling for $6995.00 Photos by Ann M. Efimetz

HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE!

October See & Do • The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg – Two new exhibitions: “Painters and Paintings of the Early American South” exposes previously unexplored regional connections between painters and their subjects in the 18th century. “Threads of Feelings” makes its final and only U.S. appearance in the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg. On loan from The Foundling Museum of London, the exhibition includes 59 books of fabric tokens — each a scrap of material reflecting the life of an infant child given up to the Foundling Hospital during the mid-18th century. • Pints and Pairings – 2 – 4 p.m. October 26, Williamsburg Lodge, 310 S. England St. “Oktoberfest” – Executive Chef Anthony Frank and his beer baron colleague Ken Clasen explore German brews and Bavarian foods in an unrehearsed fun-filled presentation. $45.50 including tax and gratuity. 757-220-7976. • You Have My Heart” 10:15 – 11 a.m. Mondays and Thursdays in October at the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg. A guided tour of the exhibition “Threads of Feeling” provides a closer look at the heart-felt messages mothers left with their babies at London’s Foundling Hospital. Museum ticket or Colonial Williamsburg admission pass required. • Tavern Ghost Walk – 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. and 9 to 10 p.m. Tours depart from Shields Tavern nightly. Tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for children under 12. This family-friendly tour is suitable for all ages and can accommodate wheel-

chairs and strollers. It’s a spirited, interactive peek at the 21st-century folklore of the Revolutionary City. • Ghosts Among Us – 7 – 8 p.m. and 8:30 – 9 p.m. Daily. Tours depart from the Greenhow Lumber House on Duke of Gloucester Street. When the sun goes down, Williamsburg has a haunted story to tell. This tour takes guests inside some of the buildings to meet ghostly inhabitants. Not suitable for young children. $15. Daily. • Cry Witch – 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. and 9 – 10 p.m. Guests are the jury in this candlelit inquiry into the charges of witchcraft brought against Grace Sherwood in 1706. The jury can question the witnesses, weigh the evidence and determine the guilt or innocence of the woman known as “the Virginia witch.” Not appropriate for young children. $18. Tuesdays, Fridays and Halloween (Wednesday, Oct. 31) • Pirates Among Us – This one hour program begins at 7:15, 7:30, 7:45, 8:30, 8:45 and 9 p.m. Oct, 5, 9, 12 and 31. Blackbeard is dead, and many of his crew have been tried and hanged in Williamsburg. This walking tour begins at the Secretary’s Office and introduces guests to the ghosts and ghouls of Blackbeard’s crew who tell their tales of piracy. Not appropriate for young children. $15. Merchants Square is capping their 85th anniversary celebration this month. The big finale for a series of events that began earlier this year is scheduled 7-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4 in the Square. It will feature a live performance of the “Right On Band.” Merchants Square offers locals and visitors with a unique shopping and dining experience that is steeped in history. The Square is one of the first planned shopping areas in the country. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was designed by Perry, Shaw & Hepburn of Boston. The inception of the square was in 1927 when John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and the Reverend W.A.R. Goodwin were planning the restoration of the Historic Area. They wanted shops and other small businesses which were located closely to move into a shopping district in order to make way for the accurate restora-

tion of the rest of the town. Retail operations began in 1928, but the name “Merchants Square” wasn’t coined until the 1960s. Over the years there have been several businesses that have come and gone. Merchants Square was the site of a Howard Johnson restaurant, now Binns, and an A&P Grocery Store, now the Craft House. Before moving to Lafayette Street, the Williamsburg Post Office was once located where the Christmas Shop and Trellis are now. In the 1960s it moved to where Seasons is. Williamsburg United Methodist Church on Jamestown Road was once located in location where Talbots is located. The newly opened DoG Street Pub was originally built as Peninsula National Bank. That building stayed a bank until a couple of years ago. Williamsburg Drug, which were longtime tenants was located where Williams & Sonoma is located. The drugstore has moved to McLaws Circle. The Kimball Theatre was originally called the Williamsburg Theater and it opened in the early 1930s. The theater was restored and renovated in 2000 to allow for live performances in addition to movies. A 35-seat screening room was added upstairs. Locals remember Casey’s Department Store which anchored the square for seven decades. It closed in 1999 and was renovated to become the College of William & Mary Bookstore. Festival heralds fall at Hickory Neck By Ann M. Efimetz For more than a decade, the congregation at Hickory Neck Episcopal Church in Toano has presented a Fall Festival to raise money for area charities. This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 12 at the church located on Richmond Road. The first year the event raised $400 for Angels of Mercy Medical Clinic. Last year, the event raised more than $14,000, bringing the total donated to more than $104,000.

The continued growth has allowed the church to help organizations including, Angels of Mercy Medical Clinic, Avalon, Eastern State Hospital Chapel, From His Hands, Greater Williamsburg Outreach Mission, Grove Christian Outreach Mission, Meals on Wheels, Salvation Army Transitional Housing, homeless missions,SpiritWorks Foundation, United Way of Greater Williamsburg Community Resource Center, Williamsburg Faith in Action and Williamsburg Walks the Talk. The goals of the festival continue to be to provide the congregation with a chance for community outreach and introduce those who attend to the Hickory Neck. Activities at the festival will include arts & crafts from various vendors, attic treasures, a bake sale, home-baked items, tours of the historic chapel and grounds and kid’s activities including a moon bounce, face painting and hay rides. The event will also include a silent auction of items donated by area businesses including restaurant gift certificates, rounds of golf and other services.

Fall color Foliage is in peak season during October in greater Williamsburg. The trees are in full color and it is a wonderful time to get outside and take in some of the splendor Mother Nature offers during this month. Some of the best places to catch the hues are at Colonial Williamsburg, Waller Mill Park, Yorktown and Jamestown. Bring a camera and make some memories.

By Ann M. Efimetz October is American Humane Association’s Adopt-A-Dog Month. It’s also a good month to adopt a cat or other animal that you can offer a forever home. Locally, the Heritage Humane Society offers locals a chance to adopt wonderful dogs and cats that can bring happiness into life. Dogs can provide people with someone to exercise with, a best friend for a child or senior, or someone to greet you with a wag of the tail at the end of a long day. Cats are faithful companions, are playful and inquisitive and are the ideal way to keep your lap warm during the cold winter months. This month, Heritage Humane will present its annual fundraiser, “Puttin’ on the Dog Fashion Show and Luncheon” Thursday, Oct. 17 at the Fort Magruder Hotel and Conference Center on Pocahontas Trail. A champagne reception begins at 11 a.m. and lunch is at noon. Fashions are by Doncaster. The event also features a silent auction and raffle items. The Heritage Humane Society is open noon-4:30 p.m. every day except Thursday. Visit www. heritagehumanesociety.org to see the gallery of adoptable pets.

Where Tried Positive results I cannot say enough good things about the effectiveness of advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine. This magazine is distributed so widely, via the newspaper, at businesses all over town, at rest stops, etc. If you are not advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine, you are missing a very crucial opportunity to reach those who visit and live in this community! The rates are very reasonable for what is offered and it is truly the most bang for your buck! I would drop every other advertisement I run before I would drop the Magazine. -Julia Carter, Owner Chickadees Fine Furniture, Antiques & Home Décor 58

Fashion on the runway Weekend of events, Oct. 11-13 By Ann M. Efimetz Locals and visitors will have a chance to see fashions ranging from avant-garde to couture during events presented by Virginia Fashion Week. The events are scheduled Oct. 11-13 and feature shows for both discriminating fashionistas to more casual observers. It’s Virginia Fashion Week’s seventh season, but the first time events will be presented here. Ann Ward Leister, who is organiz-

ing the events, is excited about bringing the shows to Williamsburg. “It is a fun event, it is a party,” Leister said. “People who want to go to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York, but can’t go, can get that atmosphere here.” Events begin at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11 in City Square between the Stryker Building and the Williamsburg Regional Library. The evening event will be presented in conjunction with the Williamsburg Jazz and Wine Festival and will feature some man-

Over 70 buffet items including Alaskan Snow Crab Legs, fresh steamed shrimp, Oysters Rockefeller, prime rib and so much more. 5363 Richmond Rd., Williamsburg, VA | 757.565.2323 | CaptainGeorges.com Virginia Beach | Outer Banks | Williamsburg | Myrtle Beach | Family Owned & Operated

nequin models in fashions that will be presented the following day during the fashion shows. The fashion show will be presented on Saturday, Oct. 12 in Trinkle Hall on the campus of the College of William & Mary. There will be seating at 2 and 6 p.m. Virginia designers, some with international roots will be showing their fashions on the runway. Leister said the earlier show will feature clothes including ready-towear and kid’s fashions while the later show will highlight evening wear, couture and avant-garde fashion. The events will close Sunday Oct. 13 at 4 p.m. in City Square with fashion under the tent. There will be a design competition featuring pieces created from recycled or discarded objects, “trash to fashion” or from works of art. Participants will have created a oneof-a-kind design to delight or amaze the audience. “It will be different,” she said. “Everything will be a work of art, you will see things that will amaze you, some may be wearable, but they may be over the top.” Leister said she hopes the events attract a wide audience. “I think people of all ages who love fashion will enjoy it,” she said. And being in Williamsburg we are expecting people from Hampton Roads and Richmond.” Want to go? For information about tickets and for more information, visit www.vafashionweek.com

just for fun

Howl-O-Scream

returns to Busch Gardens The popular annual celebration of all things Halloween has returned to Busch Gardens. There is plenty of time this month, as Halloween approaches on Oct. 31 to take it in. The village at Busch Gardens have been transformed into four “Terror-tories.” They include “Ripper Row” in England, “Vampire Point” in Germany, “Demon Street” in France and “Ports of Skull” in Italy. The newest haunted house, Cut Throat Cove is a pirate-themed attraction that has been thrilling park attendees since the attraction opened last month. Other haunted houses are Catacombs, Bitten, 13: Your Number’s Up, Dead Line and Root of All Evil. Howl-O-Scream’s signature shows, “Night Beats,” “Dig it Up!” and “Fiends” have returned for the new sea-

son. There are a few new eating and drinking experiences this year to try including, Blood Banquet, Fright Feast and Buccaneer Galley, pirate-style buffet. Demon Drinks and Pirate Baarrgh join Innoculation Station and Open CASKet for places to enjoy beverages. Parents and guardians of young children need to be aware that at 6 p.m. the park takes on a darker theme. Guests are advised to consider the park’s elevated scare factor when deciding to visit Busch Gardens with young children during Howl-O-Scream in the evening. The park is open weekends through Oct. 27. For more information and a complete operating schedule, visit www.howloscream.com/va or call 800 343-7946.
