Clay expressions Are you looking for a unique way to spend time with family or friends? Paint on Pottery, located at High Street, may be just the venue. The business, owned by Robin Wilder, opened at High Street last fall after a three-year run on Longhill Road. Paint on Pottery has become a popular place for people of all ages to create a special item while having a lot of fun. On Tuesday evenings, “Ladies Night” draws dozens of women who come to socialize while expressing their creative side. Studio fees are only $5. “It is very busy here on Ladies Night,” Wilder said in a recent interview. “It is a good time for people to come in with friends and relax. It is a great creative outlet. They pick out the item, they paint it and I glaze and fire it and they pick it up in a few days.” Equally popular are birthday parties. Kids can choose from dozens of items to paint, which run the gamut from animal figurines to piggy banks. Wilder describes Paint on Pottery as a “contemporary ceramic shop.”

Everything is already made, in bisque form. There’s also a chance to work with clay and Wilder noted that soon glasswork would be introduced. During summer Wilder offers day camps for kids 6 and up. The camps are three hours long and allow kids to work with clay. mosiacs, tie dye, glass, and pottery. Beginning this month, hours will be extended and will be 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Friday; 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday and noon-6 p.m. Sunday. The studio will be open until 10 p.m. for Tuesday Ladies Night and Friday Family Night. Paint on Pottery has been a good fit for Wilder, herself an artist. When the business became available a few years ago, she seized the opportunity. Her five kids participate in the business and she enjoys the chance to spend time with them. Wilder is committed to community involvement, participating in fundraisers for various nonprofit organizations including breast cancer, Alzheimer’s, Relay for Life, church groups and youth groups. – Ann Efimetz

Tom Trimble Master framer, artist and painting restorer Tom Trimble has been in business for more than 40 years. He recently answered questions about his career, his passion for art and the future. How long have you been at the Village Shops? The Trimble Collection has been at the Village Shops 30 years, and for 10 years before that at the former Wythe Green which used to be across from the Pottery on Richmond Road. How have things changed in your business? In the mid 70s we were selling very high end oil paintings with a lot of success, as well as restoring paintings and frames. Then I developed the handpainted French mats and 40 years later, we still repair and restore for people all over the U.S. and some overseas. As for the paintings, we still feature very high quality paintings.

How long does it take to hand draw your mats? It takes between 4 and 6 hours, and, if you make a mistake, you have to start over. I am not limited by colors and my customers receive a one-of-a-kind piece that 50,000 other people don’t have for relatively the same price. What is in the future for you and the Trimble Collection? I'm going to turn 70 this year and my goal is to retire in 30 years. This is truly my passion and there is nothing that I would rather be doing. – Ann Efimetz

What are some of the more interesting/rare pieces you have worked on? I find family pieces and the related stories that accompany them most fascinating. So many times people bring in things that seem to be beyond salvage or repair. It’s so rewarding to see their faces when they come in to pick up the pieces. It is amazing what proper cleaning of artwork and a proper frame can do. What goes into the process of restoring a piece? Heat, cigarette smoke, sunlight, and all manner of things wreak havoc on paint. I work with more than 100 different chemicals and 60 different neutralizers. What about frames? The unfortunate thing with 18th and 19th century frames, is that you cannot go to a catalog to purchase replacement pieces. The proportions and sizes really need to be exact when restoring an antique frame. We are able to make molds from corresponding pieces, and recast them. 8

Where to eat and play locally Eddie and Mindy Lepp recently launched the website EatPlayWilliamsburg. It provides a clearinghouse of information about area restaurants and attractions. The Lepps answered questions about their venture.

Do locals like it too? It is probably more beneficial to locals, since locals live here and will eat and play regularly here. A third of our website traffic comes from Williamsburg.

How did the idea come about for EatPlayWilliamsburg?

Have you received any feedback from visitors to the website?

We’re self proclaimed “foodies” and enjoy trying out new and interesting restaurants. We always wanted there to be a website that listed every single restaurant in Williamsburg so that we could easily peruse a list of them and check them off as we go.

We’ve received lots of positive feedback and that has been very encouraging. How do people get listed on the website?

When did it officially launch? We launched the website in late July 2011.

How did the name of it come about? The main goal of the website is to provide a list of all the places to eat and things to do in Williamsburg. We wanted the website to be fun, playful and straight to the point, easy for visitors to know what the website is about and to find what they’re looking for as quickly and as simply as possible. How many places are listed? We have 299 places to eat and 96 things to do listed on the website. We also wanted to give people our own points of view of the places in the area, so we do monthly reviews where each of us offers our own opinion of what we liked best at a specific place. 10

There's a link toward the bottom of the website that says “Suggest A Location.” Click on that link and let us know of any new openings or places we might have missed to list on the website. What kind of visitation do you have on the website? We have been steadily growing in our numbers. Since January, we have seen about a 200 visit increase each month. What are you planning to introduce in the future? An e-newsletter will be introduced soon so that our followers can keep abreast of all the new restaurants and shops opening up and also know about various events going on in the Williamsburg area. – Ann Efimetz

Taste of Smithfield Savor the tastes that have made Smithfield Foods synonymous with excellence. Taste of Smithfield store and restaurant will open this month on Main Street in the historic town. The goal is to introduce locals and visitors with the fine quality foods and recipes that have made Smithfield brands famous. “We are extremely excited,” said Pete Booker, vice president and general manager of Smithfield specialty foods group. “We think it will be a good draw for the community and the town. People will be able to taste and try and to see our fine products.” The store and restaurant is expected to have a “soft opening” mid-June. The grand opening is scheduled for later in the month. The retail section of the building will be similar to the highly successful Peanut Shop, located on Prince George Street in Williamsburg. It will offer many of the same fine products

including specialty food and peanut items, sauces and meat. The restaurant component will offer lunch and dinner. It will give patrons the chance to sample the best of what Smithfield has to offer and try new recipes. “We want consumer feedback on some of the new products were are developing,” Booker explained. “Visitors will get a real taste of Smithfield and what we are about. It will give us a chance to showcase our products.” Dining will be have the ambiance of an old-fashioned country store. “It will be a terrific environment,” he said.

2012 Chevy Cruze up to

42 mpg Over 40 cars available Thank you Greater Williamsburg for voting us the #1 Dealership in Williamsburg for 2011. We would also like to thank our employees for helping us achieve that goal.

Booker said the new venue is an ideal fit for Smithfield. “We see a lot of foot traffic here, and it was appropriate for us to put something that reflects part of our heritage on Main Street,” he said. “We are looking forward to a good following.” – Ann Efimetz

HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE! Is this your first Colonial Williamsburg visit or your first visit in a long time? Here are sites we recommend you see: The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg (Allow at least an hour) The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum features worldclass English and American silver, ceramics, paintings, prints and textiles dating from 1600 to 1830. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum is the first museum dedicated solely to American folk art in the United States. Peyton Randolph House (Allow 45 minutes) Home to one of Virginia’s leading politicians, this was the site of important social and political gatherings. The backyard shows the range of work undertaken by enslaved men and women and their interaction with the white household. R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse (Allow 30 minutes) Guests at R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse experience an interpretive tour that reveals the pre-Revolutionary significance of the establishment — a gathering place for the politically connected as well as for the socially ambitious — before concluding with an opportunity to enjoy a sample tasting of period coffeehouse beverages – coffee, tea or chocolate. Courthouse (Allow 20 minutes) County and city courts provided local justice both in civil and criminal cases. Participate in a wide variety of court trials in which lives, liberties and property come into contest. Magazine (Allow 30 minutes) The Magazine, Williamsburg’s arsenal, was the warehouse for gunpowder and firearms belonging to the colony and Commonwealth of Virginia. Printing Office and Bookbindery (Allow 20 minutes) Printed items such as newspapers, political notices and manuals played a key role in the spread of information before and during the Revolution. Silversmith (Allow 30 minutes) Skilled workers at the Golden Ball make jewelry, bowls, coffeepots and other items of precious metals. Wigmaker (Allow 20 minutes) At this shop, guests can watch as accomplished hands style hair and weave wigs from a wide variety of materials. Anderson Blacksmith Shop and Public Armoury Open The industrial site that helped forge the American Revolution is open to guests after more than a year of reconstruction. Anderson’s Blacksmith Shop and Public Armoury reflects the beehive of activity present during the American Revolution, with numerous trades working together in support of the American war effort: blacksmiths forging and repairing hardware, tinsmiths fashioning all sorts of military accoutrements and other trades artisans repairing and rebuilding military arms while historic foodways interpreters recreate the meals the kitchen provided to Anderson’s diverse 40-strong work force. The 21st-century purpose of the blacksmith’s and armoury site is to convey this complex and diverse scene: to engage guests in the hustle and bustle of work; to impress upon them the daunting tasks confronting the fledgling republic as it took on the greatest military power in the world; and to convey some of the economic, political, and social factors that contributed to the eventual success of the war effort and the achievement of independence. The Anderson’s Blacksmith Shop and Public Armoury project represents another step depicting Williamsburg’s leading role in the American Revolution — when former royal subjects took on new freedoms and responsibilities as self-governing citizens of an independent republic. For more information, call 1-800-HISTORY or visit the Colonial Williamsburg Regional Visitor Center, Greenhow Lumber House Ticket Office or Merchants Square Ticket Office.

Visiting Thomas Admit it, you’ve had your picture taken with the Thomas Jefferson statue in Merchants Square. The statue, located near the Kimball Theatre, offers one of the more popular photo opportunities in the Historic Area. Jefferson has been photographed wearing hats, necklaces and with people sitting on his lap. Dogs too. The statue is a great conversation starter.

Music, attractions and more Summer in Williamsburg offers visitors and locals a variety of activities not found any other time of year. Concerts, movies, theatrical experiences and area attractions including Water Country USA beckon. There are a variety of activities to enjoy, many of which cost very little or are free. Prince George Movie Nights begin the season June 17. Another will be held June 24 and will continue each Sunday night throughout the summer. The movies are shown at dusk on a large screen outside Blue Talon Bistro. Those who attend are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket. The Williamsburg Farmers Market is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Markets will be held 8 a.m.-noon June 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. Waller Mill Park, located on Airport Road offers an ideal spot for a family outing. Fishing enthusiasts also love Waller Mill for its quiet areas to catch freshwater fish. There are biking trails, canoes and paddle boats available to rent. If you are looking to cool off, you can try a ferry ride from across the James River to Surry. Ferries make a 30-minute round trip across the river throughout the day. The James River ferry is the only 24-hour state run ferry operation in Virginia. You can catch the ferry at Glass House Point at Jamestown for the ride to Surry County. The ride is fun for adults, but kids especially love it. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, JUNE 2012

area events

Wine fest at High Street Fine wine, entertainment, food and fun await at the inaugural Williamsburg Wine Festival at High Street to be held rain or shine at High Street noon-6 p.m., Saturday June 23. More than 20 Virginia wineries will participate in the event. “The momentum from the entire community has been phenomenal in watching the event take wings, said Don Willis, who is one of the event’s organizers. “The response has been incredible from the beginning. The festival will kick off with the Fifes and Drums of Yorktown which will herald the event and get the festivities underway. Island Boy Band from Southside will play music throughout the afternoon. “There will be vendors, food, gourmet items and craftspeople who will be there, Willis explained. We are very excited about it. We have plenty of parking

and a big area that gives us a good opportunity for growth. We have some great possibilities here. The event will showcase some of the state’s finest wineries. “Virginia wines have come into their own over the past few years, Willis said. “This is another event to showcase the area to our visitors and the local community. They can enjoy Virginia wines as opposed to bringing wineries in from all over the country. Several food vendors, including those already located in High Street will be there to offer participants some delicious fare. “Ultimately, we hope this event is a really nice boost for tourism, Willis said. For the past six years, Willis has organized a similar event in Yorktown. This year the fall wine festival will be held Oct. 6 at Riverwalk Landing. – Ann Efimetz

If you ever have the opportunity to visit the Villas at Five Forks, you may immediately notice the handiwork of Joe Leigh, Jr. and a corps of his friends and neighbors. Leigh is chairman of the landscape and facilities committee and is a resident of the active adult community located off Ironbound Road. Leigh, Stan Hoegerman, Carol Stoker and Rita Kristiansen have helped plan and offer suggestions regarding beautifying the community. “They may be small things that you notice when you walk down the street, Leigh explained recently. “There may plants that aren’t doing well, or a tree leaning the wrong way. The first major project the group took on was replacement of the community’s grass from fescue to Bermuda. “During the hot summer in 2010 the fescue started dying off, he said. “In May and June of 2011 we did our first seeding. That is going to take at least three years, if not four, to get it completely integrated. The type of grass wasn’t the issue as much as the water needed to support it. Regulations dictate no inground sprinkler systems that can’t be used. “So we had to think of a way to come up with something that could survive, he said. The drought and heat of past summers also resulted in the group making recommendations to move community hydrangeas that were struggling due to incorrect sun exposure. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, JUNE 2012

retiring in williamsburg

“Recommendations were made on which ones to move to other locations,” he said. Wax myrtle trees which are used throughout the community to screen air conditioners and generators, posed a problem when they began growing wild. The group walked through the area to see what the issues with the plants were and made recom-

mendations on how to maintain them. Leigh said helping the community comes naturally to him and to the residents. “It is a great community, everyone has a great time,” he said. No one gets grumpy. It is a bunch of folks having a good time doing what they like to do.” – Ann Efimetz Photo by Ann Efimetz

High time GoApe Treetop Adventure is now open at Freedom Park. The course offers participants a chance to get off the ground for a course featuring a series of zip lines, Tarzan-type swings, rope ladders, bridges, swings and trapezes. It’s all done about 40 feet above ground. It opened here at the beginning of April and has enjoyed brisk visitation. Opening day sold out. The course has since hosted hundreds of people partaking in the distinctive adventure. “One of the things we hear most from our visitors is that it is something different to do in the outdoors,” said Dan D’Agostino, owner and USA managing director of GoApe. “It is a little physical and a lot of fun. It is something unique that you don’t get to do anywhere else.” Participants are equipped with

harnesses, pulleys and carabiners. Before taking to the trees, everyone is given a 30-minute safety briefing and training. Instructors are on hand, regularly traveling the forests to ensure those on an adventure are faring well. Maneuvering the course is left up to the customer. It takes up to three hours to complete. Those who participate have to be at least 10 years old and be at least 4 feet 7 inches tall. Maximum weight is 285 pounds. There are only three GoApe courses in the U.S. There are nearly 30 across the United Kingdom. D’Agostino said the parks are catching on here because they offer people a chance to spend time outside with friends and family. “The course is built for everyone,” he said. “It is not just for extreme adventure types. This is something to do with friends, fami-

ly, church groups, scout groups and for team-building.” D’Agostino isn’t concerned about Williamsburg’s traditionally hot summers. “We have been operating in the DC area for two years and we have had extreme heat,” he said. “But the forest provides shade and it is about 10 degrees cooler. We have water stations throughout the course to cool people down.” D’Agostino has been pleased with the reception the course has received and looks forward to more visitation once school is out. “The Freedom Park course is gorgeous,” he said. “It is a stunning park and we are excited to get people up into the trees to see the park in a whole new way.” – Ann Efimetz

Bowling green There is a lawn bowling green located in the back of the Williamsburg Inn that’s home to the Williamsburg Lawn Bowling Club. Members regularly participate in competitions

and demonstrate the sport to Colonial Williamsburg guests and the general public. The sport has a long and colorful history, with early documentation of of it being played here in the early 1700s. The local green was constructed in the late1960s and has been the home to local bowlers since. The Williamsburg Lawn Bowling Club is the largest in the North East Division. The green is open every day, 3-6 p.m., from April 1-Nov 1. Each day a member of the club serves as a green keeper, helping anyone interested in trying the game. Free lessons are given on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The club holds open houses to introduce the sport.
