“…some of the best wines in the world.” –Kevin Zraly America’s most famous wine educator

Thank you, Kevin! We’re blushing... Nearly 10 years ago, The Williamsburg Winery set a course to place its wines on the world stage. A comprehensive $2 million investment in the winemaking process led by Master Winemaker Matthew Meyer has yielded wines that America’s most celebrated wine educator has acknowledged as amongst the best in the world.

Wine is fine

around town The benefits of drinking wine in moderation have been the subject of many articles. Studies have shown that moderate amounts of alcohol can raise good cholesterol, and the phytochemicals in wine act as antioxidants and prevent free radicals from causing cellular damage in the body. So a glass of wine of day can be good for you. Health benefits aside, some people drink wine because they enjoy its taste, and the opportunity to socialize with other aficionados, friends or family. Our area has a variety of wine stores which offer hundreds of vintages both domestic and foreign. There are various opportunities for wine tastings and to participate in wine clubs. Many neighborhoods have their own clubs. Others join online wine clubs or “wine of the month clubs.” This allows people to sample a variety of wine and to interact with others about their favorites. Williamsburg is home to The Williamsburg Winery, which is Virginia’s largest. The Winery’s Governor’s White is the best selling wine in the state. The John Adlum Chardonnay recently received a “Best Buy” from “Wine Enthusiast” which is a premier source for wine accessories, wine accessory gifts, wine cellars, information, education, events and travel. The Winery has also created a “wine school.” It’s in partnership with New York’s 21 Club and is geared to educating servers who sell wine in restaurants. The next session will be later this month. The newly opened World of Wine in New Town offers people a chance to learn more about wine by offering educational programs at the store. There are free tastings held each weekend. Owner Ray Gold said that speakers are invited to the store to present programs on a variety of topics which allow people to learn more. “We bring in wine experts from wineries and distributors,” he said. 18

A recent program included tasting of five wines from various areas of France, providing a history of the vineyards and the types of grapes used. He said there are plans to do “blind tastings” to let people express their impressions on several varieties. “We plan to make it a fun experience,” he said. Gold said there are several active wine clubs in the area. “These people have retired here,” he said. ‘They have lived all over the worked and have a vast experience about wine.” La Tienda, located on Jamestown Road, offers weekly wine tastings featuring the Spanish wines carried at the store. Each week a different vintage is highlighted. One week the store may offer tastings on sparkling wines, the next week, robust reds. “We also try to do pairings because we have a plethora of gourmet items from Spain,” said Alexia Warner, La Tienda director of retail operations. “Some wines go well with fish, some taste better with cheese.” The tastings are held 5-7 p.m., Tuesdays and attract people with a breadth of wine experience ranging from the occasional imbiber to those who are very knowledgeable. “We make sure there is something for everyone,” Warner said. Warner said that there are plans to develop a separate area within the building to serve Spanish wines for wine club groups. She thinks the idea will go over with those who may want to host a wine club meeting at a venue outside a private home. “They may think they would like to have ten friends and have a wine event where they don’t have to worry about cleaning up the dishes,” she said. “We get inquiries every week about people who want to host their events in our building. We get a lot of inquires from people asking if they can bring their wine club here so they can taste some wines.” –Ann Efimetz

Festival’s winter series this month Photo by Ann Efimetz

The 10th anniversary season of the Virginia Peninsula Jewish Film Festiva continues this month at the Kimball Theatre. The event, which is sponsored by Temple Beth El, has brought award-winning films to the area. Local resident Beth Scharlop spearheaded bringing the festival here a decade ago. She was joined by Janet Kruger and Norm Jacobs in organizing the event. It has taken off and has continued gaining popularity and support from the community. Several people have worked with the festival for nearly the entire ten years, including Tina Hahamovitch who has organized the event for the past three years and Rob Kaplan and Jim

Heller who have worked diligently screening the films. Clay Riley at the Kimball has also assisted with the festival since its inception. Many others made important contributions to the festival’s planning and continuance. The event has been supported by the public and attendance at the films has been generally strong, as organizers try to pick films that have interest beyond the Jewish community. The festival opens last fall with “Nora’s Will,” also known as “Five Days Without Nora” and A Matter of Size.” The film festival continues this month with “Anita,” Jan. 29-30; “Saviors In The Night,” Feb. 26-27 and “The Infidel” March 26-27. Linda Taylor H

Hospice House and Support Care offers compassionate care to people facing the last phases of life.

The facility, located on Powhatan Parkway, is led by Linda Taylor who originally came to the organization in 1983 as the first paid professional, staying in that position until 1990. She served on the hospice board 1996-2002 and came back as executive director in 2004. “Obviously, I am very passionate about this organization,” Taylor said recently. She said it takes a full and part-time staff of 24, a board of another two dozen, and approximately 300 volunteers to keep Hospice House functioning 24/7. Additionally, some $800,000 per year has to be raised in order for services to continue, which continually poses challenges. Then there is maintenance of the aging house. But what she described as the most important aspect of her job, is talking with the family members who want to share their experiences with Hospice House with her. “I am always touched by how much this place means to people years after the death of their loved one and by how we become family to many of them,” she said. “It is so hard to come through our front door, but when they do, patient and family, it is a welcoming, calm and beautiful environment

where the guest is treated with dignity. Caregivers can once again become daughters and sons, moms and dads, husbands and wives because we become the caregivers and advocates for their loved one.” She considers it an honor to provide the service to the community “I am so proud to be part of an organization that provides compassionate, end-of-life care with dignity to people based solely on need, not on how much money you have or whether you have insurance or not,” she said. “I believe strongly that everyone has a right to die with their dignity intact, as pain free as possible and not alone. That is what we do and to help their loved ones after.” Taylor is indebted to the organizations, individuals and groups which support the work of Hospice House. “It takes a community to keep this organization open and available without charge,” she said. “Every group and, or organization that supports our mission is a gift to us and so appreciated. We could not do it without their ongoing support. This community built Hospice House and it is this community that keeps it going, even during tough economic times.”

“I am always touched by how much this place means to people years after the death of their loved one...”

Experience the flavor of Amish Country There’s a place where you can taste the flavor of the Lancaster, Pa. without leaving our area. Amish Country Products on Richmond Road in Norge offers a variety of delectable Amish products, fine furniture and other Pennsylvania Dutch goods. The store has been open for the past three years and has gained popularity among locals and visitors. It carries canned goods, baked goods, breads, jams, jellies, candy and snacks. Those who are in the market for furniture can select from full dining room sets to single chairs or jewelry boxes. “We have a little bit of everything,” said owner Les Strubel. “Since most everyone is familiar with Amish products, it is not a hard sell. And you don’t have to drive hundreds of miles to get a good selection.” Strubel said the bulk food and other baked goods offered at the store are the most popular items. He 42

has a loyal clientele who regularly come by for fresh Amish-baked goods. The store carries a wide selection of Shady Maple bread, which comes in 20 flavors including peach and blueberry. Strubel said crusty sourdough is the best seller. “The food appeals to most people,” Strubel said. “We have several hundred food items to offer.” Strubel works with an Amish woman who provides pickled red beets for the store, which people can’t seem to get enough of, he said. “That is one of our best selling canned goods. People buy whole cases of them. I can never run out of those.” He added that her homemade sauerkraut is “the best stuff out there.” Over the recent holidays, Strubel took orders for a variety of pies, which ran the gamut from Shoo-Fly to pecan. In addition to food items, the store carries fine Amish-made furniture out of high quality wood. Strubel added that Amish-made furniture is among the only American made furniture still on the market. Amish Country products also carries a variety of poly-lumber outdoor furniture, which Strubel said is popular year-round. People respond to the unique products offered. “There are a lot of people who happen to drive by and stop here because of the work of the Amish,” he said. “Amish quality has a good reputation.” –Ann Efimetz

A day to get close Got hugs? Get em and give em’ on National Hug (or Hugging) Day, which is Jan. 21. It is annual holiday, which by the way is officially recognized by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. According to the website Holiday insights, National Hugging Day was created in 1986 by Rev. Kevin Zaborney from Caro, Mich. It has since spread to Canada, England, Australia, Germany and Poland.

There have been studies linking health benefits to getting hugged. Hugs cab increase the “bonding” hormone, oxytocin, and decrease the risk of heart disease. A good hug can also lower blood pressure and reduce stress. A study has found that hugging and hand holding reduces the effects of stress. Therapeutic touch has also been shown to reduce stress and pain among adults, and may reduce some symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, such as restlessness and pacing.

Ascension of Our Lord Byzantine Catholic Church In February of 1988 Bishop Michael Dudick gave canonical status to Ascension of Our Lord Byzantine Catholic Church, which is located on Palace Lane. Since the church has become the home church to a number of area residents who treasure the tradition, reverence and beauty of the Byzantine Catholic tradition. Each Sunday, approximately 100 people worship at the intimate church. Several people also attend daily celebrations at 9 a.m. Deacon Nicholas Sotack said that many Catholic Christians may not be aware that there are two dozen churches within the Catholic Church in full communion with the See of Peter, the Pope of Rome, including the Byzantine Catholic. He said that those who call the Ascension of Our Lord their home church revere the traditions and are uplifted by the beauty of the Divine Liturgy. “Parishioners feel a contemporary spiritual uplift through all the human senses,” Sotack said. “The description goes beyond words. One must experience the celebration in order to fully understand and appreciate the meaning.” The differences between Roman Catholic and Byzantine Catholic is in style and expression. In the Byzantine church, the priest faces east, or toward the altar, leading the people in prayer, whereas the Roman priest faces the congregation. Incense is also used to symbolically offer prayers to God. Many of the prayers are similar to both faiths, but at the Byzantine Church, all are chanted in a dialogue between the priest, deacon, and the faithful. The church itself is adorned with icons. Ascension parish has a unique, hand-carved iconostasis (icon screen) that was made by a parishioner, Ignatius Stefaniw. Those who attend the church are committed to community outreach. Several programs are held to raise money for various local charities. These include Ethnic dinners. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, JANUARY 2011

“They are sponsored by the parish guild each quarter to offer delicious home cooked Eastern European foods at very affordable prices,” he explained. Money raised benefits various organizations. Fr. Shuter has instituted a Tuesday morning coffee hour that follows the Divine Liturgy. It’s purpose is to invite people to join in lively discussions about topics that are important to the group. Speaker programs are being considered for the upcoming year that range from spiritual topics such as iconography to practical life topics such as living wills, Well Being, and medicine. The parish also hopes to add pysanki (Ukranian Easter egg) decorating classes, as well as dance classes to its list of fun events for the parish and community. – Ann Efimetz

Players break ground on theater

At long last, the Williamsburg Players have broken ground on an expansion to the James-York Playhouse on Hubbard Lane. The construction process got underway late fall and will include expanding the theater from 104 seats to 314. The current auditorium will be renovated and become the lobby of the new facility. During the process, the stage will be expanded from the current 20 ft. x 15 ft. to 60 ft. x 30 ft. That will allow the Players to offer larger scale plays and musicals. Construction will continue throughout the winter, while the Players continue their current season. Things will ramp up in June after the season wraps. The first show set for the expanded facility is set to open next Sept. 15 with the Broadway hit, “The Producers.” 52

“We have been doing the small shows, but this will enable us to bring large shows to the Williamsburg community,” said Players treasurer Peter Natale. The Williamsburg Players have a long history in our area, dating to the 1950s when a group of area residents began gathering to read plays. From there, a group was formed which eventually became the Williamsburg Players. In 1977, the former Trinity Presbyterian Church on Hubbard Lane was purchased, and has been the home to the Players since. The group has given hundreds of talented people the chance to participate both on and off stage and thousands of patrons have bought tickets and supported the growing company. W&M Arts Complex seen as gateway A proposed Arts Complex costing hundreds of millions would double as the grand entrance to the campus of William & Mary, along Jamestown Road. A feasibility study led by famed architect Barton Myers of the UCLA School of Architecture calls for razing Andrews Hall and Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall and replacing them with four or five integrated buildings that reach closer to Jamestown Road with a plaza and waterfall out front. One building would have a great hallway for integrating the arts facilities and entertaining. The feasibility projects the Arts Complex close to $224 million. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, JANUARY 2011

The need for an Arts Complex is reflected in the usage. Phi Beta Kappa Hall is booked 289 nights of the year, and the practice rooms are booked 16 hours daily. The new facility would be the new public entrance to the college. Plans are in the works, but it is expected to take years to complete the complex.

THE PLAN Four or five buildings will pull together the departments of Music, Theater, Dance, Film Studies, Art and Art History as well as the Muscarelle Museum. A large Hall will be available for major receptions and dinners. A new Theater will replace Phi Beta Kappa with better acoustics but only 499 seats. 500 seats trigger union issues with Actors Equity. A Concert Hall will likely fall short of 1,800-2,000 once recommended by the Williamsburg Area of Performing Arts. It will still be bigger than Phi Beta Kappa’s 800 seats.

Service in motion Book provides information for teen volunteers

For the past couple years, NetworkWilliamsburg has published a Youth Resource booklet designed to help kids find places around town that need their unique talents.

applications, particularly now as colleges become harder to get into with just good grades,” Dutro said. The book also includes statistics from a study of college admissions counselors which states that community service is key. Our area has dozens of nonprofits waiting for dedicated area youth to pitch in. More––http://www.networkwilliamsburg.com/im ages//booklet20102011website.pdf. –Ann Efimetz

Volunteering is sometimes a requirement for high school students. However, the requirement often opens doors for more involvement for teens to help in various capacities. The book, which is available online, lists dozens of area agencies which would welcome teen involvement in a variety of activities. “Also, new this year in the booklet are suggestions for students to get involved if time is an issue,” said Karen Dutro of NetworkWilliamsburg. “These are simple ways that can really help a nonprofit in need including organizing collection drives, making cards for shut-ins and military, and even cutting coupons.” Kids seem to be taking advantage of the book, as Dutro has fielded several positive responses from community members, parents, and nonprofits who have found it beneficial to get the word out. Two “Aware Fairs” were held last year, including Walsingham Academy, which were instrumental in encouraging students to sign up for volunteer opportunities. The hope is to hold another fair soon which would involve more schools, Dutro said. Bruton High has a copy of the booklet in their guidance office and has distributed fliers to their students telling them of the booklet. “I think everyone is realizing that community service, aside from being a valuable life experience, is something that will be of value to put on college
